  1. the city walls, the early mornings, the late nights,

  2. all of the praying, the fasting, the strategic planning,

  3. the giving of time and money and energy and resources,

  4. persevering through threats and opposition,

  5. confronting conflict.

  6. What is all this for?

  7. Where is it all leading to?

  8. That's what we see beginning in chapter eight.

  9. In many ways, chapter eight, eight through 10

  10. are the climax to this whole story.

  11. We see at the beginning of chapter eight

  12. that God works powerfully among his people,

  13. that a revival breaks out.

  14. God works in a powerful way to bring about a great movement

  15. of spiritual renewal among the people.

  16. And how this spiritual renewal happens

  17. and what follows is the subject of chapters eight through 10.

  18. And this morning, we're gonna see part one

  19. of this movement of renewal as we focus on chapter eight.

  20. We're gonna ask two questions.

  21. Our two questions are what happens in this story

  22. and what can we learn?

  23. What happens in this story and what can we learn?

  24. So first of all, let's look at what happens in this story.

  25. Beginning of verse one tells us that very early one morning,

  26. at the beginning of the seventh month of the year,

  27. all of the people gather together

  28. in the city near the water gates.

  29. The water gate.

  30. Remember that for later on in the sermon.

  31. This assembly of people is just shy of about 50,000 people.

  32. So imagine Nat's Park downtown.

  33. Imagine National's Park filled to the brim.

  34. That's about the size of this assembly.

  35. And the people have gathered,

  36. they've assembled for one purpose,

  37. to hear the word of God read.

  38. To hear the word of God read.

  39. Now you have to appreciate the drama

  40. and expectation of this moment.

  41. This is something that had not happened

  42. in the life of God's people for several generations.

  43. The people gathered together in this moment

  44. had not heard God's word read or taught publicly

  45. in such an assembly for over 100 years.

  46. You know, many of us have probably been to church many times.

  47. Some of us may have grown up in the church.

  48. And so you just have to appreciate

  49. what would it have been like

  50. to grow up in Babylon during the exile

  51. and to never have heard the word of God read

  52. or taught publicly.

  53. Not a single sermon, not a single Bible study.

  54. But now for the first time,

  55. you're gathered with 50,000 of your friends and family

  56. to hear the word of the Lord.

  57. And so Ezra the priest and the scribe

  58. climbs up on top of a large wooden platform

  59. that they had built

  60. so that people could see him and hear him

  61. as he read God's word.

  62. And he gets to the top

  63. and he puts the big book of the law

  64. on top of the podium

  65. and he opens it

  66. and he starts reading.

  67. Verse three says that the people were eager.

  68. They were attentive to read the book,

  69. to read God's word.

  70. Verse three,

  71. and the ears of all the people

  72. were attentive to the book of the law.

  73. The people are waiting.

  74. They're on the edge of their seat.

  75. They're eager.

  76. They're receptive.

  77. They're open.

  78. They're attentive to the word.

  79. If you're here this morning

  80. and you're unfamiliar with the Bible,

  81. maybe particularly the Old Testament,

  82. what Ezra was reading,

  83. the book of the law,

  84. would have been the first five books

  85. of the Old Testament.

  86. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,

  87. Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

  88. These are also known

  89. as the five books of Moses

  90. or the Pentateuch.

  91. The Pentateuch.

  92. One way to think about it

  93. if you're unfamiliar with the Bible

  94. is that these books

  95. were Israel's

  96. Declaration of Independence,

  97. Constitution,

  98. and Gettysburg Address

  99. all wrapped into one.

  100. These five books

  101. told the story

  102. of who God was,

  103. of who they were

  104. as a people,

  105. what their story was,

  106. and how they were to live

  107. in light of that.

  108. Verses seven through eight

  109. tell us that not only

  110. was God's word

  111. clearly read,

  112. but it was clearly

  113. explained.

  114. It was clearly explained.

  115. As Ezra read,

  116. the Levites helped

  117. the people to understand

  118. what was being read.

  119. How exactly did this happen?

  120. What was the format of this?

  121. What was the structure of this?

  122. Well, we actually aren't told

  123. specifically in this text.

  124. Some scholars suggest

  125. that perhaps Ezra

  126. read a section

  127. and then paused

  128. and perhaps

  129. across the whole assembly

  130. as people are gathered

  131. in small groups,

  132. the Levites would go around

  133. and sort of share

  134. and summarize

  135. and explain

  136. what was just read.

  137. And then Ezra would move on

  138. to reading the next section.

  139. We don't know

  140. if this is exactly

  141. the order of what happened,

  142. but we know

  143. that some version

  144. of this

  145. is what happened.

  146. Ezra read

  147. and the Levites

  148. explained clearly

  149. the meaning

  150. of God's word.

  151. And this went on

  152. for four hours.

  153. We're told it goes on

  154. from sunrise

  155. to midday

  156. around noon.

  157. Next time you think

  158. that a Sunday morning sermon

  159. might be

  160. going a little long,

  161. just remember

  162. Nehemiah chapter 8.

    Nehemiah 8 chapter mention

  163. Four hours.

  164. People are standing.

  165. And that at the end

  166. of it all,

  167. at the end of the four hours,

  168. how did the people respond?

  169. Well, we see in verse 6,

  170. and Ezra blessed the Lord,

  171. the great God.

  172. And all the people answered,

  173. Amen, Amen,

  174. lifting up their hands.

  175. And they bowed their heads

  176. and worshiped the Lord

  177. with their faces

  178. to the ground.

  179. And then in verse 9,

  180. for all the people

  181. wept

  182. as they heard

  183. the words of the law.

  184. This is a powerful moment.

  185. The Spirit of God

  186. is moving.

  187. The people worshiped

  188. and they wept

  189. in response

  190. to God's word.

  191. Why is that?

  192. Why did they respond

  193. in that way?

  194. Well,

  195. well, of course,

  196. God's Spirit

  197. was moving

  198. among them powerfully.

  199. But again,

  200. imagine for a moment

  201. that you've grown up

  202. in exile in Babylon

  203. and you've never heard

  204. the word of God

  205. read or taught publicly

  206. in a way

  207. that you can understand.

  208. And then you hear Ezra

  209. get up

  210. and start reading

  211. the book of Genesis

  212. and how God

  213. made heaven and earth

  214. and all of his,

  215. every man and woman

  216. made and created

  217. in his image

  218. and how God

  219. had made a promise

  220. to Abraham

  221. that his people,

  222. your people,

  223. would be a light

  224. to the nations,

  225. a blessing

  226. to all the peoples

  227. on earth.

  228. And then Ezra

  229. moves on to Exodus.

  230. You hear the miraculous

  231. story of God's

  232. great power and salvation

  233. to lead your ancestors

  234. out of bondage

  235. when they were in slavery

  236. in Egypt

  237. and how Moses

  238. led them to Mount Sinai

  239. where the Lord

  240. appeared

  241. in great power

  242. and glory

  243. and smoke

  244. and fire

  245. and entered

  246. into a covenant

  247. relationship

  248. with his people

  249. and gave them the law.

  250. And then you keep,

  251. Ezra keeps reading

  252. in Leviticus

  253. and Numbers

  254. and Deuteronomy

  255. and you read

  256. how God

  257. made it possible

  258. for a sinful

  259. people,

  260. for a sinful

  261. people

  262. to continue

  263. to live

  264. in a covenant

  265. relationship

  266. with the Holy God

  267. through atonement

  268. and sacrifice

  269. to follow

  270. his commands

  271. and to walk

  272. in his way

  273. so that they might

  274. live out their vocation

  275. of being a light

  276. and a blessing

  277. to all the nations

  278. of the earth.

  279. And over the course

  280. of four hours

  281. you hear the story

  282. of your people

  283. being read

  284. of your people

  285. to giveHope
