  1. Good morning.

  2. On April 12th, 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to enter space and orbit the earth.

  3. ! This was a momentous event in human history.

  4. And if you know the history of that time, you know that it also spurred on the competitive space race between Russia and the United States,

  5. and it led to the massive expansion of NASA and ultimately the U.S. landing a man on the moon.

  6. But the Russian government used this moment to promote some bigger ideas.

  7. The Kremlin ended up producing lots of propaganda, including a poster of a picture of a cosmonaut in outer space saying a message,

  8. and the message said, there is no God.

  9. As if to say, we went to outer space, we looked around, we didn't find God,

  10. and so therefore that's clear and convincing proof that God does not exist.

  11. Were they right?

  12. Were they right?

  13. I think that's a totally fair question.

  14. I think for many people in our modern culture, perhaps even for some of you,

  15. this is a pretty convincing argument.

  16. If you broaden it out that we've, through science, we've looked at the world through empirical observation,

  17. and we have yet to find convincing proof of God.

  18. But this time of year, it's great to sing Christmas carols and spread holiday cheer,

  19. but at the end of the day, Christmas isn't a reason to believe in God.

  20. Now, that's one possible story,

  21. but we see another possible story in our gospel passage this morning in Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  22. where we are introduced to somebody named Emmanuel.

  23. Emmanuel, this name that comes from a prophecy in Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  24. a name that means God with us, God with us.

  25. And this name, Emmanuel, God with us,

  26. is at the very heart of the Advent and Christmas season,

  27. and it's at the very heart of the Christian faith.

  28. And so a question that we have to ask this morning is,

  29. which story is true?

  30. Is the story that we've looked for God,

  31. but yet we haven't found any evidence of him,

  32. is that story true?

  33. Or is the story true that God has come to be with us?

  34. And that's what we're going to look at this morning.

  35. And also, if that story was true, what difference would it make?

  36. So we're going to look at this name, Emmanuel, God with us,

  37. and we're going to look at these two stories together.

  38. So first of all, Emmanuel means God with us.

  39. It means God with us.

  40. In Matthew chapter 1, verses 18 through 21,

    Matthew 1:18–21

  41. an angel appears to Joseph and tells him not to be afraid

  42. about Mary's pregnancy.

  43. Nothing scandalous or immoral has happened,

  44. but rather this has all happened through the initiative

  45. of the Holy Spirit.

  46. In verses 22 and 23, the angel says that this is to fulfill

  47. the words of the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah chapter 7,

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  48. behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

  49. and they shall call his name Emmanuel.

  50. Now, many people, I think, in our culture find this to be pretty

  51. irrational and implausible.

  52. Surely Jesus was a historical figure.

  53. He was a good spiritual leader and moral teacher,

  54. but he certainly wasn't conceived supernaturally.

  55. He certainly wasn't God.

  56. He certainly wasn't God.

  57. How could we possibly believe that story?

  58. But around the time that Yuri Gagarin,

  59. the Russian cosmonaut, went into space for the first time

  60. in the early 1960s, there was a professor of ancient literature

  61. at Cambridge University by the name of C.S. Lewis.

  62. And in 1963, Lewis published an essay responding to this claim

  63. that the Russians had been to space and confirmed that there is no God.

  64. And in this essay, Lewis writes this,

  65. the Russians, I am told, report that they have not found God

  66. in outer space.

  67. But looking for God or heaven by exploring space

  68. would be like reading or seeing all of Shakespeare's plays

  69. in the hopes that you find Shakespeare as one of the characters.

  70. If God does exist, he is related to the universe

  71. more as an author is related to a play

  72. than as one object in the universe is related to one another.

  73. He's saying if you're trying to find God in outer space

  74. would be like Hamlet trying to find Shakespeare.

  75. Hamlet could never possibly find Shakespeare

  76. by exploring and examining his own world.

  77. He would never find him.

  78. But that doesn't mean that is not evidence

  79. that Shakespeare does not exist.

  80. In other words, the claim that there's no empirical proof

  81. for God in the world is nowhere near a convincing argument

  82. that God does not exist.

  83. Why on earth would we assume that if God did exist

  84. that that is how we would find him?

  85. Of course we would never find him like that.

  86. For Hamlet, for Hamlet to know Shakespeare,

  87. Shakespeare would have to write himself into Hamlet's story.

  88. For Hamlet to know Shakespeare,

  89. Shakespeare would have to reveal himself

  90. to Hamlet in a personal way.

  91. And this is the claim that Christianity makes on the world.

  92. It's the claim that Christianity makes on the world

  93. at Advent and at Christmas

  94. that in the birth of Jesus Christ,

  95. God has written himself into our story.

  96. In the birth of Jesus Christ,

  97. God has revealed himself.

  98. You may say, well, I believe that Jesus

  99. was a historical person.

  100. I believe that he was a good spiritual and moral teacher.

  101. But I still can't quite believe in God

  102. because I don't see the historical evidence.

  103. And may I suggest that if that's your view

  104. and if that's where you're coming from,

  105. perhaps you haven't examined

  106. the historical evidence closely enough.

  107. Perhaps you haven't examined

  108. all of the historical evidence.

  109. Let's just look at one.

  110. If we look at the eyewitness accounts of the Gospels,

  111. which were reliably recorded and reliably transmitted,

  112. we see in the Gospels that lots of people come to Jesus

  113. and they don't just receive his teaching,

  114. but they actually worship him.

  115. That some people actually fall down on their knees

  116. and worship him as God.

  117. And what you need to understand

  118. is that this was a completely absurd

  119. and an even immoral thing to do in Jewish culture

  120. in the first century.

  121. In Jewish culture, it was completely blasphemous

  122. to treat another human being as God.

  123. Only God could be worshiped.

  124. And there were all kinds of traditions and laws

  125. that prevented people from treating other people like God.

  126. And what's amazing is that in the Gospels,

  127. in no one instance, does Jesus respond and say,

  128. hey, you've got the wrong person.

  129. You know, you've got the wrong idea.

  130. I'm just a rabbi.

  131. I'm just a teacher.

  132. I'm not God.

  133. Don't worship me.

  134. Worship God alone.

  135. No, in every instance, he doesn't turn them away,

  136. but he accepts it and he worships it.

  137. He welcomes it.

  138. Which, if you think about it,

  139. if he wasn't God, if that wasn't true,

  140. Jesus was either a fraud, a complete fraud,

  141. or he was a complete narcissist,

  142. or he was both.

  143. If you have captured this better than C.S. Lewis

  144. in mere Christianity,

  145. by the way, I try to limit my C.S. Lewis references

  146. to one in most sermons,

  147. but sometimes just, you gotta have two.

  148. This is one of those days.

  149. C.S. Lewis, mere Christianity,

  150. says, I'm trying here to prevent anyone

  151. saying the really foolish thing

  152. that people often say about Jesus.

  153. I'm ready to accept him as a great moral teacher,

  154. but I don't accept his claim to be God.

  155. That is the one thing we must not say.

  156. A man who is merely a man

  157. and said the sort of things Jesus said

  158. would not be a great moral teacher.

  159. He would either be a lunatic

  160. on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg,

  161. or else he would be the devil of hell.

  162. You must make your choice.

  163. Either this man was and is the son of God,

  164. or else a madman and something worse.

  165. You can shut him up for a fool.

  166. You can spit at him and kill him as a demon.

  167. Or you can fall at his feet

  168. and call him Lord and God.

  169. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense

  170. about him being a great human teacher.

  171. He has not left that open to us.

  172. He did not intend to.

  173. Lewis says, when it comes to Jesus,

  174. there's only really three rational responses

  175. if you consider the historical evidence.

  176. He's either a liar,

  177. or he's a lunatic,

  178. or he's Lord.

  179. He's either a complete fraud,

  180. he knew who he truly was

  181. and completely lied about it to everybody.

  182. Or he truly believed that he was God,

  183. but he in fact wasn't,

  184. which would make him insane.

  185. Or he actually is who he says he is.

  186. If the Christmas story is true,

  187. it means that Jesus is Emmanuel.

  188. It means that he's God with us.

  189. We can't just think of him

  190. as a good teacher or spiritual leader,

  191. but as someone who has the right

  192. to make claims on our lives.

  193. As somebody who deserves our worship

  194. and who deserves our obedience

  195. in every single aspect of our lives.

  196. And so we have to decide,

  197. was Jesus a fraud?

  198. Was he a narcissist or a liar?

  199. Or was he God?

  200. So first of all,

  201. Emmanuel means that Jesus is God.

  202. Second of all,

  203. it means that he is God with us.

  204. He's God with us.

  205. In the Old Testament,

  206. it was always a pretty radical thing

  207. when people got to be with God,

  208. to be in his presence.

  209. God appeared to Israel on Mount Sinai

  210. with a cloud of fire

  211. and an earthquake

  212. and the roaring sound of trumpets.

  213. And of course,

  214. if you know the Exodus story,

  215. no one could even go close to the mountain

  216. except for Moses.

  217. God told people,

  218. if you even touch the mountain,

  219. you're gonna die.

  220. Encountering the presence of God

  221. in the Old Testament

  222. is kind of like dealing with nuclear radiation.

  223. To deal with nuclear radiation,

  224. you need a lot of preparation.

  225. There's a lot of rules that you have to learn,

  226. a lot of protocols,

  227. and there's a lot of stuff

  228. that you have to wear.

  229. You have to have the right credentials.

  230. You have to wear a really expensive suit.

  231. And if you don't do that,

  232. if you become unprepared,

  233. it's gonna kill you.

  234. And that's what kind of the tabernacle

  235. and the temple

  236. and the sacrificial system

  237. were for Israel.

  238. They were to prepare people,

  239. an unholy people,

  240. to encounter a holy, radioactive God.

  241. There's this line in Lord of the Rings

  242. where in the fellowship with the ring,

  243. where they're figuring out

  244. what to do with the ring

  245. and Boromir says,

  246. one does not simply just walk into Mordor.

  247. But one does not simply just walk

  248. into the presence of an awesome holy God.

  249. He is like radioactive nuclear radiation.

  250. His glory will melt your face off.

  251. And yet,

  252. and yet,

  253. the news of Advent and Christmas

  254. is that the God who was so radioactive,

  255. the God who was so glorious,

  256. the God who was so holy,

  257. came into the world.

  258. Came into the world

  259. as a baby.

  260. This is something I've been thinking about

  261. a lot recently

  262. because,

  263. as many of you know,

  264. my wife Molly and I

  265. are expecting our first child,

  266. which is really exciting.

  267. We're thrilled.

  268. We're very excited to be parents.

  269. It's a very exciting season in our lives.

  270. And so,

  271. Advent,

  272. as parents who are expecting our first child,

  273. Advent has made me think in a new way

  274. about the reality of the incarnation.

  275. And in particular,

  276. I've been thinking a lot about this question.

  277. why,

  278. for Jesus,

  279. did he have to come as a baby?

  280. Why couldn't he have just come

  281. as a fully formed adult?

  282. He still could have been

  283. Trinitarian Orthodox,

  284. could have still been fully human,

  285. fully divine.

  286. He could have just come

  287. as a 33-year-old adult,

  288. showed up on the scene,

  289. and done his ministry,

  290. and done everything else that he did.

  291. So why did he have to come as a baby?

  292. Well,

  293. there's a lot

  294. that we could say

  295. in response to that question.

  296. But I think one of the things

  297. that we have to say is this.

  298. You know,

  299. I think it's a common human experience,

  300. whether we're Christian or not,

  301. whether we're religious or not,

  302. is,

  303. how can I know

  304. that I'm not alone?

  305. How can I know

  306. that God is with me?

  307. How can I know

  308. that God hasn't abandoned me?

  309. Perhaps that's a question

  310. that you're wondering

  311. this morning

  312. as you're coming into worship.

  313. Where is God

  314. in this struggle

  315. that I'm facing?

  316. Where is God

  317. in this diagnosis?

  318. Where is God

  319. when it feels like

  320. my life is falling apart?

  321. Where is God

  322. when it feels like

  323. the world is falling apart?

  324. Where is God?

  325. Are we alone

  326. ultimately?

  327. And I want us

  328. to consider the fact

  329. that God didn't just show up

  330. on the scene

  331. as a fully formed human.

  332. He became a baby.

  333. There is no one

  334. so more vulnerable.

  335. There is no one

  336. more open.

  337. There is no one

  338. more accessible.

  339. there is no one

  340. who is more completely

  341. and totally

  342. with you

  343. than a baby.

  344. For nine months

  345. during pregnancy

  346. and then for many months

  347. after that

  348. all babies can do

  349. all they know

  350. how to do

  351. is just be there

  352. with you.

  353. They're sleeping

  354. they're eating

  355. they're crying

  356. they're making

  357. dirty diapers

  358. of course

  359. but they're just

  360. there.

  361. They're there.

  362. They're there.

  363. What if God

  364. came as a baby

  365. so that you could know

  366. beyond a shadow

  367. of a doubt

  368. that he's like that

  369. with you?

  370. He's just there.

  371. He's with you

  372. all the time

  373. 24-7

  374. night and day

  375. every other

  376. religion

  377. and philosophy

  378. says here's what

  379. you need to do

  380. in order to be

  381. with God.

  382. Here's what you

  383. need to do

  384. in order to be

  385. with the divine.

  386. Only Christianity

  387. says

  388. look at what God

  389. did to come

  390. and be with you.

  391. Look at what God

  392. did to come

  393. and be

  394. with you.

  395. Look at what he did

  396. to make himself

  397. utterly available

  398. to you.

  399. Look at what he did

  400. to make himself

  401. utterly open

  402. to you.

  403. The God

  404. who revealed himself

  405. in radioactive glory

  406. on Mount Sinai

  407. the God

  408. who created

  409. the world

  410. and the glory

  411. of the galaxies

  412. and the billions

  413. of stars

  414. in our universe

  415. is here.

  416. He's available.

  417. You have access

  418. to him

  419. by faith.

  420. What's so amazing

  421. about the incarnation

  422. is that we have

  423. this rock-solid

  424. assurance

  425. that God

  426. is always

  427. with us,

  428. that he'll never

  429. leave us

  430. and he'll never

  431. forsake us.

  432. let's look back

  433. at those two stories

  434. that we talked

  435. about in the beginning.

  436. Story number one,

  437. there's no God.

  438. We call this

  439. a secular story.

  440. If the secular

  441. story is true,

  442. then in the moments

  443. where you feel

  444. most alone,

  445. in the moments

  446. where you feel

  447. like I'm incredibly

  448. lonely,

  449. there's no one

  450. with me,

  451. if that story

  452. is true,

  453. then you're right.

  454. You are alone.

  455. There's no one

  456. ultimately with you.

  457. Your deepest feelings

  458. of being abandoned,

  459. your deepest feelings

  460. that there's no one

  461. with you

  462. are right

  463. and they're true.

  464. But if we look

  465. at the second story,

  466. if the second story

  467. is that God

  468. has come to be

  469. with us

  470. in Emmanuel,

  471. then when we

  472. experience

  473. those very same

  474. feelings,

  475. when we experience

  476. those very same

  477. emotions

  478. that we're alone,

  479. there's no one

  480. with us,

  481. if that story

  482. is true,

  483. then nothing,

  484. nothing could be

  485. further from the truth.

  486. Our deepest sense,

  487. our deepest feelings

  488. that we feel alone,

  489. there's nothing

  490. that could be further

  491. than the truth

  492. because God

  493. has promised

  494. to always be with us.

  495. Whether we feel it

  496. or not,

  497. whether we know it

  498. or not,

  499. he's there.

  500. He's with us.

  501. So Jesus,

  502. Emmanuel means

  503. Jesus is God.

  504. Emmanuel means

  505. Jesus is God

  506. with us.

  507. And third,

  508. and finally,

  509. Emmanuel means

  510. that Jesus

  511. is God

  512. with us.

  513. He's God

  514. with us.

  515. Verse 21,

  516. the angel says to Joseph,

  517. she will give birth

  518. to a son

  519. and you are to give him

  520. the name Jesus

  521. because he will save

  522. his people

  523. from their sins.

  524. Many Bibles

  525. have a footnote,

  526. probably yours does,

  527. a footnote on that verse

  528. that says that Jesus

  529. is the Greek name

  530. for the word Joshua,

  531. the name Joshua,

  532. which means

  533. the Lord saves.

  534. Jesus.

  535. Why was Jesus

  536. born into this world?

  537. He was born

  538. into the world

  539. to save us

  540. from our sins,

  541. to save us

  542. from our sins.

  543. Now,

  544. I think it's worth noting

  545. that I think a lot of people

  546. in our culture,

  547. a lot of modern people,

  548. educated,

  549. sophisticated,

  550. thoughtful people,

  551. I think it's fairly

  552. narrow-minded,

  553. fairly outdated,

  554. morally regressive

  555. to believe in the doctrine

  556. of original sin.

  557. But I would actually say

  558. that sin is the doctrine

  559. that our culture

  560. needs the most,

  561. needs the most.

  562. Alexander Solzhenitsyn

  563. was a Russian author

  564. who was imprisoned

  565. and sentenced to work

  566. in the gulag

  567. in prison camps

  568. under the Soviet Union

  569. for speaking out

  570. against the government.

  571. And as he's in prison,

  572. he's thinking and writing,

  573. and he's writing

  574. about how the culture

  575. that he lived in

  576. believed fundamentally

  577. that the dividing line

  578. between good and evil

  579. ran between groups of people,

  580. between this group of people

  581. and that group of people.

  582. And he says,

  583. he's reflecting on this,

  584. he says,

  585. you know,

  586. if that were actually true,

  587. we would have solved

  588. humanity's problems

  589. a long time ago.

  590. If humanity was divided up

  591. between good people

  592. and bad people,

  593. all we would have to do

  594. is just separate

  595. the good people

  596. from the bad people

  597. and then society

  598. would flourish.

  599. And many systems

  600. and governments

  601. have tried to do that

  602. over the years

  603. and it has ended horrifically.

  604. Solzhenitsyn says,

  605. the reason why we haven't

  606. been able to solve

  607. humanity's basic problems

  608. is because the dividing line

  609. between good and evil

  610. does not run

  611. between groups of people.

  612. He says that it cuts

  613. through the heart

  614. of every single person.

  615. The dividing line

  616. of good and evil

  617. cuts through the heart

  618. of your heart

  619. and my heart.

  620. If the dividing line

  621. between good and evil,

  622. if we believe fundamentally

  623. that the dividing line

  624. runs through groups of people,

  625. the oppression

  626. and violence

  627. and injustice

  628. in the world

  629. will never stop.

  630. We'll always have an enemy,

  631. it will always be us

  632. versus them,

  633. but if,

  634. if the dividing line

  635. between good and evil

  636. cuts through the heart

  637. of every person.

  638. That is our only hope

  639. of seeing society healed

  640. because it's the most

  641. fundamental basis

  642. to say,

  643. I'm no better than you.

  644. I'm not more righteous

  645. than you

  646. because the evil

  647. that exists in the world

  648. isn't just out there,

  649. it's in here.

  650. It's in here.

  651. And this is what it means

  652. when the Bible

  653. talks about sin

  654. and it's why Jesus was born.

  655. We all need to be rescued

  656. from the same problem

  657. and it doesn't matter

  658. our race, class,

  659. ethnicity,

  660. social status,

  661. rich, poor,

  662. Democrat, Republican.

  663. The Bible teaches

  664. that we all fall short

  665. of God's holy standard

  666. of our lives

  667. and we've all committed

  668. treason against

  669. the king of the universe.

  670. We've all,

  671. we all owe God a debt

  672. that we cannot repay.

  673. We are hopelessly

  674. and irrevocably

  675. lost in our sin.

  676. That's the human condition.

  677. But the good news

  678. of Christmas

  679. is not just that God,

  680. that Jesus is God.

  681. God.

  682. It's that he's God

  683. with us.

  684. He's God with us.

  685. On the cross,

  686. Jesus took the evil

  687. that's inside

  688. each and every one of us

  689. and he placed it

  690. on himself

  691. so that we can be

  692. forgiven and reconciled

  693. to God.

  694. And this is not just

  695. good news

  696. for us as individuals,

  697. it's good news

  698. for the whole world.

  699. Because if we admit

  700. that Jesus was born

  701. to save us

  702. from what's inside

  703. our hearts,

  704. then we can't look

  705. at someone

  706. who's different

  707. from us

  708. and hate them.

  709. We can never truly

  710. hate other people.

  711. You know,

  712. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  713. Jesus says,

  714. love your enemies.

  715. And this isn't

  716. a cute phrase

  717. on a coffee mug.

  718. It's not also

  719. an unattainable

  720. ethical ideal.

  721. It's a declaration

  722. about the only

  723. rational response

  724. to the grace

  725. that we've been given

  726. in Christ.

  727. Do you see?

  728. Do you see this morning

  729. that the dividing line

  730. between good and evil

  731. cuts through your own heart?

  732. And have you trusted

  733. in Emmanuel

  734. to save you

  735. from this condition

  736. as your only hope

  737. for the forgiveness

  738. of sins

  739. and for eternal life?

  740. Verse 21 tells us

  741. that Jesus was born

  742. to save us

  743. from our sin.

  744. To take down

  745. the dividing line

  746. of good and evil

  747. in your heart

  748. and my heart

  749. so that you and I

  750. might cross

  751. lines of

  752. class

  753. and race

  754. and ethnicity

  755. and politics

  756. and to cross them

  757. with love.

  758. To cross them

  759. with love

  760. and to bring healing

  761. into the world.

  762. And to do

  763. any different than that

  764. is to completely

  765. miss what Advent

  766. and Christmas

  767. are all about.

  768. Because this

  769. is what God

  770. has done for us

  771. in Jesus Christ,

  772. in our incarnation.

  773. Jesus is Emmanuel.

  774. He's God.

  775. You can't just

  776. treat him as a good

  777. moral teacher,

  778. a good spiritual teacher.

  779. He demands our worship

  780. and our obedience.

  781. He demands our whole lives.

  782. He's God

  783. with us.

  784. He's made himself

  785. completely open

  786. and accessible

  787. and available

  788. to you

  789. so that you can know

  790. even in your darkest

  791. moments of doubting

  792. if you're actually alone

  793. so that you can know

  794. beyond shadow of a doubt

  795. that you're never

  796. actually alone,

  797. that he's with you,

  798. that he'll never

  799. leave you or forsake you.

  800. And he's God

  801. with us.

  802. With us.

  803. Sinners

  804. in need of a savior.

  805. Dorothy Sayers

  806. was a 20th century

  807. British author

  808. and novelist.

  809. She was known

  810. for a series

  811. of detective crime novels

  812. and her main character

  813. is a detective

  814. named Lord Peter Whimsey.

  815. And midway through

  816. this detective novel series,

  817. Sayers introduces

  818. another character

  819. in addition to

  820. her main character

  821. named Harriet Vane

  822. who joins up

  823. with Lord Peter Whimsey

  824. and helps him

  825. to solve crimes.

  826. And as they solve crimes

  827. together,

  828. these two eventually

  829. fall in love.

  830. And a lot of the

  831. literary critics

  832. over the years

  833. who have looked

  834. at these stories

  835. have noticed

  836. a pattern

  837. that there's

  838. a lot of similarities

  839. between Harriet Vane

  840. and Dorothy Sayers.

  841. Harriet Vane

  842. was educated

  843. at Oxford,

  844. so was Dorothy Sayers.

  845. Harriet Vane

  846. was tall

  847. and had dark hair,

  848. so did Dorothy Sayers.

  849. Harriet Vane

  850. wrote detective novels,

  851. so did Dorothy Sayers.

  852. And the literary critics

  853. have said

  854. it's quite obvious

  855. what she was doing,

  856. that she was writing

  857. herself into the story.

  858. She had created

  859. this character,

  860. Lord Peter Whimsey,

  861. and the more

  862. that she developed

  863. his character,

  864. the more that she

  865. wrote about him,

  866. the more that she

  867. wrote his story,

  868. the more that she

  869. fell in love with him.

  870. He was a great detective,

  871. he was committed

  872. to justice,

  873. he was intelligent,

  874. and he was rich,

  875. but he had flaws.

  876. He had a personal crisis,

  877. he was lonely.

  878. And so Dorothy Sayers

  879. wrote herself

  880. into the story

  881. to rescue her main character

  882. and to fall in love

  883. with him.

  884. And friends,

  885. that is what it means

  886. for Jesus Christ

  887. to be Emmanuel.

  888. It means that

  889. God has written

  890. himself

  891. into our story

  892. to rescue us

  893. in love.

  894. In March 1791,

  895. John Wesley,

  896. the great pastor

  897. and theologian

  898. and founder

  899. of the Methodist movement,

  900. was nearing the end

  901. of a long

  902. and faithful life

  903. of ministry.

  904. If you're not familiar

  905. with Wesley,

  906. one historian

  907. wrote about the impact

  908. of Wesley's life

  909. and said that

  910. in the course

  911. of his life,

  912. he rode over

  913. 250,000 miles

  914. on horseback.

  915. He gave away

  916. over 30,000 pounds,

  917. which was a lot

  918. at the time,

  919. and he preached

  920. more than

  921. 40,000 sermons.

  922. He formed societies,

  923. opened chapels,

  924. trained preachers,

  925. administered aid charities,

  926. helped the sick,

  927. and oversaw many

  928. orphanages and schools.

  929. This was a man

  930. who knew a lot

  931. about God

  932. and who did a lot

  933. for God.

  934. But in March 1791,

  935. as he was nearing

  936. his final days,

  937. as he lay on his deathbed

  938. at his home

  939. in London,

  940. his friends came

  941. and gathered around him.

  942. And as his friends

  943. are gathered around him,

  944. as he's laying

  945. on his bed,

  946. he grasped

  947. each of their hands

  948. one by one

  949. and looked each of them

  950. in the eye

  951. and told them,

  952. farewell,

  953. farewell.

  954. But in the moments

  955. before he breathed

  956. his final breath,

  957. John Wesley called

  958. his friends

  959. to gather around him.

  960. And he told

  961. each of his friends,

  962. the best of all,

  963. the best of all

  964. is God with us.

  965. And as his voice

  966. grew more feeble,

  967. he lifted up his arms

  968. and he spoke

  969. in a feeble voice,

  970. lifting up his arms

  971. as if giving

  972. one last pastoral benediction.

  973. And he repeated it,

  974. the best of all

  975. is God with us.

  976. Let's pray.

  977. Our Father in heaven,

  978. we thank you

  979. that you have

  980. come into the world,

  981. that you have

  982. written yourself

  983. into our story,

  984. that you are Emmanuel.

  985. Lord, I pray

  986. in the places

  987. in our hearts

  988. where we feel

  989. most alone,

  990. would you show us

  991. and reveal yourself

  992. to us

  993. in a way

  994. that we can know

  995. beyond the shadow

  996. of doubt

  997. that you're always

  998. with us.

  999. We pray all this

  1000. in the name

  1001. of the Father

  1002. and the Son

  1003. and the Holy Spirit.

  1004. Amen.
