  1. How does a person go about building a life worth living?

  2. How do you build a good life?

  3. How do you build a life that is a life of meaning, a life of purpose,

  4. a life that is reasonably happy, but also a life that can bear the weight

  5. of suffering and loss, a life that can hold up in the face of

  6. its own finitude, a life that can hold up

  7. to the challenges of life in the real world?

  8. How do you build that kind of life?

  9. And where do you look to learn how to do this well?

  10. Our culture emphasizes that such a life should be authentic,

  11. that we should build a life that feels true to us.

  12. But beyond that, there's not a lot of guidance.

  13. And if we're honest, no one, at least no one I know,

  14. has the time or energy to develop a comprehensive and rigorous worldview.

  15. We just don't have time or energy for that.

  16. Where would we start?

  17. And so what most people end up doing, if we're honest,

  18. is sort of cobbling together a life out of this and that, right?

  19. There might be this that we saw on Instagram,

  20. or that that we heard in a particularly compelling podcast,

  21. or this snippet that we got from a friend,

  22. or this that these friends who seem to be doing a better job in their life than us,

  23. and we copy them.

  24. We sort of cobble together a life.

  25. But a life built this way is fragile.

  26. It tends to fall apart when things get tough.

  27. A life built this way is also a life that feels meaningless,

  28. because we know deep down we're making it up as we go along.

  29. Matthew chapter 28, this passage that Hillary just read,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  30. speaks directly into this question.

  31. It shows us the kind of life that is on offer through the risen Christ

  32. that we cannot find anywhere else.

  33. It's a life built around three things.

  34. A life built around a new center.

  35. A life built around a new identity.

  36. And then a life built around a new purpose.

  37. So let's pray, and then we're going to open God's Word together.

  38. If you have a Bible and you want to turn to chapter 28 of Matthew,

  39. you can do that.

  40. Let's pray together.

  41. Lord, we thank You for Your Word,

  42. and we thank You that it is not mere ink and paper,

  43. that we are here in the presence of the living God.

  44. We pray that as we open Your Word, Your Word would open us.

  45. As we read Your Word, Your Word would read us.

  46. Lord, and that as we come to understand Your written Word,

  47. we would come face to face with the living Word, Jesus Christ.

  48. And it's in His name that we pray.

  49. Amen.

  50. So what does it take to build a good life?

  51. What is on offer through the risen Christ to the world?

  52. The first thing is that we find in Jesus a new center.

  53. After seeing Jesus crucified,

  54. this happened previously in Matthew's Gospel.

  55. After seeing Jesus crucified,

  56. the disciples felt as though their lives were falling apart.

  57. They felt as though their lives were meaningless.

  58. They felt as though everything they thought they knew

  59. had just come undone.

  60. And they were trying to rebuild their lives as best they could.

  61. But suffice it to say, they were profoundly disoriented.

  62. But when they encounter the risen Jesus, everything changes.

  63. He appears to them.

  64. He says, meet me in Galilee.

  65. Go there, wait, I'm coming.

  66. So they go to Galilee.

  67. They go to the mountain,

  68. and they're waiting for Jesus on the mountain.

  69. And when Jesus arrives,

  70. it says some of them immediately fall prostrate on the ground,

  71. and they worship Him.

  72. And then it says others still doubted.

  73. They still had their doubts.

  74. Now we're going to come back to that.

  75. The first thing Jesus says is this.

  76. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  77. Now he's not just saying some authority.

  78. He's saying all authority everywhere is now mine.

  79. For those who know their Old Testaments,

  80. this is a reference indirectly to Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  81. There's a prophecy that Daniel makes in the Old Testament

  82. that the Son of Man,

  83. a title that Jesus had used for Himself,

  84. the Son of Man one day would be enthroned

  85. as the ruler of the world.

  86. And Jesus is saying,

  87. that has been fulfilled in your hearing.

  88. That was fulfilled through the resurrection.

  89. I have become the King of the world.

  90. In other words, at this moment,

  91. Jesus is announcing His coronation

  92. on this mountain to His disciples

  93. as the King of heaven and earth.

  94. So for those who say or argue

  95. that there's nowhere where Jesus actually

  96. announces that He is divine

  97. or makes the claim that He is God,

  98. you're going to have to figure out

  99. how to make sense of this passage

  100. because that seems to be exactly

  101. what He's saying here.

  102. And here's the thing that we want to wrestle

  103. with this morning.

  104. If all authority in heaven and on earth

  105. belongs to Jesus,

  106. that means that Jesus is the center

  107. of reality itself.

  108. It means that Jesus is the center

  109. of everything.

  110. And if that's true,

  111. then any vision of life

  112. that doesn't begin that way,

  113. in other words,

  114. any vision of life

  115. that assumes we are at the center

  116. is already doomed to fail

  117. because it doesn't line up with reality.

  118. It's already disconnected

  119. from what is most true.

  120. So there's a lot of wisdom

  121. to be found in the world.

  122. The ancient Greeks

  123. had a lot of wisdom.

  124. They talked about,

  125. Aristotle talks about

  126. the cultivation of virtue.

  127. The Stoics talk about

  128. the value of self-mastery.

  129. There's a lot of modern wisdom

  130. to be gleaned, right?

  131. Tim Ferriss can help us

  132. optimize our habits, right?

  133. Andrew Huberman can help us

  134. use science to improve

  135. our quality of life

  136. and our bodies and minds.

  137. Or Brene Brown can urge us

  138. to embrace vulnerability.

  139. All valuable,

  140. all worth considering,

  141. all worth maybe incorporating.

  142. There's value in these ideas,

  143. but listen,

  144. they all share the same limit

  145. because all of these realities,

  146. all of these visions of life

  147. assume that I should be

  148. at the center of my life.

  149. And that's the problem.

  150. And that's the limit.

  151. Scripture actually says

  152. that this is how things

  153. originally went wrong

  154. in the world,

  155. that human beings

  156. became convinced

  157. at some point along the way

  158. that life would be better

  159. if we were at the center

  160. instead of God.

  161. And that's when things

  162. began to fall apart.

  163. All right,

  164. so think of the solar system.

  165. How do massive planets

  166. move with such precision

  167. and beauty and order?

  168. Why aren't they constantly

  169. crashing into each other

  170. or flying out into space?

  171. And the answer is

  172. because they all share

  173. the same center.

  174. They're all held in place

  175. by the one thing

  176. that has the gravity

  177. and the power to do it,

  178. and that's the sun.

  179. So our lives are very much

  180. like the solar system.

  181. There are all kinds of things

  182. floating around in my life

  183. and in your life, right?

  184. Our loves are floating around out here.

  185. Our desires are floating around.

  186. Our fears are over here

  187. and they're floating around.

  188. Our ambitions,

  189. our duties,

  190. our obligations,

  191. our relationships,

  192. all of these things

  193. are floating around.

  194. That's what makes up

  195. the stuff of our lives.

  196. when we try to sit

  197. at the center of all that

  198. and when we try to hold

  199. all of it in balance

  200. and all of it,

  201. get it all moving together

  202. and flowing in harmony

  203. and peace,

  204. we find very quickly

  205. it doesn't work.

  206. Nobody I know,

  207. despite all of our efforts

  208. in all of the podcasts,

  209. has that kind of life.

  210. the reality is

  211. our lives are disordered

  212. because we were never really

  213. meant to be at the center.

  214. We lack the gravity.

  215. We lack the authority

  216. to hold it all together

  217. the way it should fit.

  218. And so what we find

  219. is that sometimes

  220. things hurl off into space.

  221. They just get neglected

  222. altogether.

  223. Much more often,

  224. at least if you're anything like me,

  225. you find things crashing

  226. into one another.

  227. And our life is actually

  228. made up of a lot of things

  229. clashing with other things

  230. and bringing disorder.

  231. So our ambitions

  232. might crash

  233. into our sense of self-worth.

  234. And you find

  235. that you're a workaholic,

  236. that you can't even

  237. take a day off,

  238. that you work seven days a week

  239. because your ambitions

  240. have crashed

  241. into your sense of self-worth.

  242. Our fears may crash

  243. into our relationships.

  244. And when that happens,

  245. we either become

  246. highly self-protective

  247. and disconnected.

  248. Or we become

  249. overly needy

  250. because our fears

  251. are crashing

  252. into our relationships.

  253. Or our need for approval

  254. crashes into our values.

  255. And we find that we let people

  256. walk all over us.

  257. And we become people pleasers.

  258. Or our desires

  259. and urges

  260. crash into our ethics.

  261. And we become immoral

  262. or maybe even hypocritical.

  263. So things are crashing

  264. into each other

  265. all the time.

  266. Our lives don't work

  267. when we're at the center

  268. of them.

  269. Jesus is the only one.

  270. And this is part

  271. of what he's claiming here.

  272. He's the only one

  273. with the gravity.

  274. He's the only one

  275. with enough authority

  276. to bring order

  277. to the solar system

  278. of your life

  279. and your soul.

  280. In order to build

  281. the kind of life

  282. we were created to live,

  283. the first thing

  284. we need to realize

  285. is that everything

  286. in our life

  287. all of this stuff

  288. belongs to Jesus.

  289. It's his.

  290. Right?

  291. So your family,

  292. your kids,

  293. your money,

  294. your body,

  295. your ambitions,

  296. your suffering,

  297. your politics,

  298. your future,

  299. your past.

  300. This moment

  301. all belongs to him.

  302. It's all his

  303. to do whatever

  304. he wants

  305. with it.

  306. The invitation here

  307. is to put him

  308. at the center,

  309. allow him

  310. to occupy the place,

  311. the throne

  312. at the center

  313. of our lives.

  314. Everything then

  315. begins to fall

  316. into place.

  317. This is how life

  318. was meant to work.

  319. We need a kind of

  320. Copernican revolution

  321. of the heart.

  322. We need Jesus

  323. to displace us

  324. at the center

  325. of our lives.

  326. However,

  327. right,

  328. it's not as simple

  329. as saying,

  330. okay,

  331. from this moment forward

  332. I'm going to do that

  333. because we can say that

  334. but then there's

  335. the reality

  336. of actually living

  337. that out

  338. and we find

  339. all kinds of resistance

  340. in ourselves

  341. when we try

  342. to actually

  343. live that way

  344. and if we were

  345. to simply resolve

  346. to start living

  347. that way

  348. then this would

  349. be no different

  350. than any of the other

  351. podcasts

  352. we listen to

  353. throughout the week.

  354. Just another way

  355. to optimize

  356. and improve.

  357. So in order

  358. to actually have

  359. this Copernican revolution

  360. we need a new identity.

  361. We need a new identity

  362. and this is the second thing

  363. we see in this passage.

  364. If we follow Jesus' words

  365. he says,

  366. all authority

  367. has been given to me

  368. therefore

  369. go and make disciples

  370. of all nations.

  371. Disciples are

  372. one way of thinking

  373. about a disciple

  374. is a disciple of Jesus

  375. is someone who lives

  376. with King Jesus

  377. at the center

  378. of their lives.

  379. It's someone

  380. who has put Christ

  381. at the center

  382. of their lives

  383. or is seeking

  384. to do that.

  385. Right?

  386. But notice how

  387. disciples are made.

  388. This is very important.

  389. Two things happen

  390. in order to make

  391. a disciple.

  392. Jesus says

  393. go and make disciples

  394. number one

  395. baptizing them

  396. in the name

  397. of the Father

  398. and of the Son

  399. and of the Holy Spirit

  400. and then

  401. teaching them

  402. to obey everything

  403. I have commanded you.

  404. Baptism

  405. gives us

  406. a new identity.

  407. Then the teaching

  408. gives us

  409. a new way to live.

  410. But notice

  411. before we can be taught

  412. a new way of life

  413. we have to be baptized

  414. into a new identity.

  415. The new identity

  416. comes before

  417. the new way of life

  418. and that is

  419. extremely important.

  420. It's one of the things

  421. that makes Christianity

  422. entirely unique

  423. when compared

  424. to other religions

  425. and worldviews.

  426. The claim is

  427. that before we can

  428. change how we live

  429. we need to change

  430. who we are.

  431. That's what baptism does.

  432. Right?

  433. For those who were here

  434. last week

  435. we saw two young women

  436. baptized up here.

  437. Claire and Sunny.

  438. It was so hard

  439. not to call them

  440. Sunny and Claire.

  441. Sunny and Cher.

  442. So I reversed it

  443. and on purpose

  444. I said Claire and Sunny.

  445. Claire and Sunny

  446. were up here

  447. because I didn't

  448. trust myself

  449. and they were baptized.

  450. And if you were here

  451. and you saw them

  452. baptized

  453. you saw them kneel here

  454. you saw us

  455. pour the water

  456. over them.

  457. When that happened

  458. it wasn't just

  459. a ritual.

  460. Right?

  461. It wasn't just

  462. a kind of

  463. teaching aid

  464. or visual device.

  465. Something happened

  466. fundamentally in them.

  467. each of those women

  468. became

  469. in a way

  470. someone new.

  471. Because if you remember

  472. the words we said

  473. we baptized

  474. each of those women

  475. into the name

  476. of the Father

  477. and the Son

  478. and the Holy Spirit.

  479. Notice by the way

  480. it's not names.

  481. Three.

  482. It's the name.

  483. The name of a God

  484. who is Father, Son

  485. and Holy Spirit.

  486. They were baptized

  487. into that name.

  488. And what that means

  489. is that they were

  490. joined into

  491. and took on

  492. the identity

  493. of that being.

  494. Their old self died

  495. there was a new self

  496. that emerged

  497. that is joined

  498. into

  499. the essence

  500. of God Himself.

  501. Right?

  502. So they emerge

  503. as someone

  504. who has been adopted

  505. by God the Father.

  506. Who has been

  507. united

  508. to God the Son.

  509. Who has been

  510. filled by God

  511. the Holy Spirit.

  512. God the Son

  513. Listen,

  514. unlike all other

  515. forms of identity

  516. in our society

  517. that we have

  518. to construct

  519. ourselves

  520. this is not

  521. an identity

  522. that we can construct.

  523. It's an identity

  524. that can only

  525. be received

  526. by grace

  527. through faith.

  528. It's a gift

  529. made possible

  530. by the death

  531. and resurrection

  532. of Jesus Christ.

  533. And once we have

  534. that new identity

  535. once we are

  536. then sharing

  537. in the life

  538. of God.

  539. Right?

  540. Once we are

  541. sharing in the

  542. dance of the Trinity.

  543. Right?

  544. There's this lovely

  545. image of the Trinity

  546. the three persons

  547. of the Trinity

  548. and the word

  549. that theologians

  550. use is perichoresis

  551. and there's this

  552. idea of this

  553. perichoretic dance

  554. that has been

  555. happening for all

  556. of eternity

  557. the mutual indwelling

  558. of the Father

  559. and the Son

  560. and the Spirit.

  561. Right?

  562. This eternal dance

  563. of three persons.

  564. And in baptism

  565. we see someone

  566. who's invited

  567. to dance.

  568. they join

  569. into that dance

  570. they join

  571. into that life

  572. they join

  573. into that love

  574. and only then

  575. can we begin

  576. to learn

  577. a new way

  578. of life

  579. and we can begin

  580. to learn

  581. a new way

  582. of living

  583. where we join

  584. with Christ

  585. in the renewal

  586. of all things.

  587. Identity

  588. and then behavior.

  589. And you know

  590. listen

  591. there are a lot

  592. of people

  593. in this city

  594. those of you

  595. who live here

  596. you know

  597. there are a lot

  598. of people

  599. in the city

  600. a lot of people

  601. in the world

  602. trying to bring

  603. renewal to our society.

  604. Most everybody agrees

  605. that things are not great

  606. and most everybody agrees

  607. that we need

  608. some kind of change

  609. and a lot of those efforts

  610. are really wonderful

  611. don't get me wrong

  612. go out there

  613. and do some good

  614. in the world

  615. right?

  616. We're not going

  617. to argue with that

  618. but most of these

  619. approaches

  620. are outside in.

  621. There are a lot

  622. of people here

  623. working on

  624. getting better policies

  625. great

  626. some of you

  627. are working on that

  628. great

  629. more education

  630. for everybody

  631. absolutely

  632. some people

  633. really care

  634. about moral reform

  635. let's get back

  636. to the way

  637. things were

  638. the good old days

  639. somebody really

  640. want better programs

  641. and more access

  642. right?

  643. For more people

  644. all of that is good

  645. but the truth is

  646. we cannot change

  647. society

  648. unless we can

  649. change ourselves

  650. unless we can

  651. change ourselves

  652. it's like that

  653. well-known

  654. and somewhat

  655. apocryphal story

  656. about G.K. Chesterton

  657. where the newspaper

  658. put out the question

  659. what's wrong

  660. with the world

  661. and invited submissions

  662. and Chesterton

  663. famously responds

  664. actually with a

  665. longer response

  666. if you look at it

  667. but the summary

  668. of the response

  669. is this

  670. what's wrong

  671. with the world?

  672. I am

  673. we cannot change

  674. society

  675. if we can't

  676. change ourselves

  677. Christ's renewal

  678. has to begin

  679. in us

  680. before it can

  681. flow

  682. through us

  683. so if you're here

  684. and you're not a Christian

  685. some of you are here

  686. and you're not sure

  687. what you believe

  688. and you're in the right place

  689. but I want to make clear

  690. what we're saying

  691. what this means

  692. is that Jesus

  693. is not inviting you

  694. to merely clean yourself up

  695. and become a church person

  696. he's not inviting you

  697. merely to clean yourself up

  698. and become more moral

  699. or more religious

  700. he's offering

  701. a new identity

  702. an identity

  703. that you will never

  704. be able to achieve

  705. that you will never

  706. be able to construct

  707. that you would never

  708. be able to secure

  709. for yourself

  710. it's on offer

  711. for free

  712. through faith

  713. and once we take hold

  714. of that new identity

  715. and become a disciple

  716. then we gain a new purpose

  717. then we gain a new purpose

  718. but before we go there

  719. I want to pause

  720. for a second

  721. and I want to tackle

  722. or engage

  723. a possible objection

  724. that people might be thinking

  725. okay

  726. some people might be hearing

  727. all of this

  728. and be skeptical

  729. because at the very beginning

  730. we said that Jesus

  731. announced himself

  732. as king of heaven and earth

  733. he's king of everything

  734. and so an objection

  735. that we might hear

  736. well if Jesus is really

  737. in the throne of the world

  738. then why are things

  739. still so messed up

  740. why is the world

  741. such a mess

  742. why is my life

  743. such a mess

  744. if Jesus is king

  745. it sure doesn't look

  746. like Jesus is king

  747. you know I read

  748. a health report

  749. on DC

  750. maybe some of you

  751. saw this

  752. I think it just came out

  753. where they found

  754. that people who live

  755. east of the Anacostia river

  756. on average

  757. have a lifespan

  758. that is 30 years shorter

  759. than people who live

  760. west of the park

  761. I'm going to say that again

  762. if you live

  763. east of the river

  764. your lifespan on average

  765. is going to be

  766. 30 years shorter

  767. than people who live

  768. west of Rock Creek Park

  769. that's crazy

  770. I don't know about you

  771. but when I read that

  772. I had to read it

  773. several times

  774. to make sure

  775. I was reading it correctly

  776. that's not okay

  777. that's not a world

  778. that seems like

  779. Jesus is king

  780. because there are

  781. so many issues

  782. related to justice

  783. right

  784. that are

  785. that are contributing

  786. to that difference

  787. in lifespan

  788. so many issues

  789. that

  790. that need to be

  791. tackled

  792. right

  793. it doesn't seem

  794. like Jesus is king

  795. here's my response

  796. here's the response

  797. of N.T. Wright

  798. the renowned Bible scholar

  799. to this as well

  800. so maybe

  801. that'll have more credibility

  802. you're right

  803. it doesn't seem

  804. like Jesus

  805. is in charge

  806. the claim

  807. is actually not

  808. that everything

  809. is already healed

  810. the claim

  811. is that the risen Jesus

  812. is at work now

  813. taking the world

  814. from where it was

  815. which is under the rule

  816. under the false king

  817. of death

  818. and corruption

  819. and greed

  820. and evil

  821. and every kind

  822. of wickedness

  823. and gradually

  824. bringing the world

  825. under his rule

  826. of life

  827. giving love

  828. and you say

  829. well where

  830. and how

  831. is Jesus

  832. doing this

  833. through you

  834. through you

  835. through us

  836. through his followers

  837. through people

  838. that he has commissioned

  839. that my friends

  840. is the new purpose

  841. that Jesus gives people

  842. once they become

  843. his disciples

  844. to join with him

  845. in the renewal

  846. of all things

  847. this is the new purpose

  848. and I know

  849. that's a staggering idea

  850. it's also a crucial reminder

  851. of why we exist

  852. as a church

  853. a church

  854. is not just

  855. a social club

  856. not just a service provider

  857. we're not just another

  858. form of support group

  859. with prayer

  860. and singing

  861. a church

  862. is the people

  863. sent by the risen king

  864. to call others

  865. into the life

  866. and the way

  867. of his kingdom

  868. so everything we do

  869. everything we do

  870. our worship

  871. evangelism

  872. pastoral care

  873. children's ministry

  874. youth group

  875. adult education

  876. small groups

  877. hospitality

  878. mercy ministry

  879. it's all part

  880. of this larger purpose

  881. all of that

  882. serves the purpose

  883. of making disciples

  884. who live out

  885. the ways

  886. of the kingdom

  887. and help

  888. bring

  889. renewal

  890. to every corner

  891. of the world

  892. so the purpose

  893. of our church

  894. the reason

  895. that we're even here

  896. is not simply

  897. to provide

  898. religious goods

  899. and services

  900. for people

  901. who already believe

  902. that's part of it

  903. the purpose

  904. of the church

  905. is to make disciples

  906. of all nations

  907. Jesus says

  908. and by the way

  909. because he says

  910. all nations

  911. our purpose

  912. our identity

  913. as a church

  914. can never be allowed

  915. to become tribal

  916. the gospel

  917. is not the

  918. possession

  919. of one nation

  920. or one race

  921. or one class

  922. or one culture

  923. or one political party

  924. if Jesus is lord

  925. of all nations

  926. then the church

  927. has to be for

  928. all nations

  929. moreover

  930. the church

  931. can never be allowed

  932. to become

  933. a private religious club

  934. for the already convinced

  935. we can never allow

  936. ourselves

  937. to become

  938. a chaplaincy

  939. for people

  940. who already know

  941. how to behave

  942. because the church

  943. fundamentally

  944. does not exist

  945. with all due respect

  946. only to meet

  947. our needs

  948. our primary purpose

  949. I would argue

  950. is not to meet

  951. your needs

  952. my needs

  953. it's for the sake

  954. of the people

  955. outside the walls

  956. it's for the sake

  957. of the people

  958. who are not a part

  959. of our church

  960. that's our primary orientation

  961. so everything we do

  962. is not only about

  963. us growing

  964. in our faith

  965. but about seeing

  966. others come to faith

  967. right

  968. folding others in

  969. inviting them

  970. to the dance

  971. of the trinity

  972. that's our purpose

  973. so

  974. if we pull

  975. all of this together

  976. every Christian

  977. I would say

  978. should be asking

  979. those of us

  980. who are here

  981. Christians

  982. how am I helping

  983. somebody

  984. take the next step

  985. toward Jesus

  986. who am I helping

  987. in my life

  988. who am I

  989. helping to take

  990. that next step

  991. where Jesus

  992. becomes a little

  993. more central

  994. to their life

  995. right

  996. where their life

  997. comes a little

  998. more under

  999. his rule

  1000. where their identity

  1001. becomes a little

  1002. more formed

  1003. and defined

  1004. by their unity

  1005. with him

  1006. right

  1007. so who are you

  1008. praying for

  1009. we should all

  1010. have people

  1011. in our lives

  1012. that we're

  1013. praying for

  1014. who are you

  1015. encouraging

  1016. who are you

  1017. welcoming

  1018. who are you

  1019. walking alongside

  1020. who are you

  1021. inviting

  1022. you know

  1023. for Father's Day

  1024. coming up

  1025. we're doing

  1026. a cookout

  1027. and this is

  1028. like Mother's Day

  1029. something that we

  1030. want to reach out

  1031. to the community

  1032. and invite them

  1033. to come

  1034. and as long

  1035. as the

  1036. meat lasts

  1037. we're going to be

  1038. cooking and slinging

  1039. burgers and dogs

  1040. and it's going to

  1041. happen out in the

  1042. courtyard

1043. and so we'll do it

  1044. until we run out

  1045. and whoever comes

  1046. gets food

  1047. and it's free

  1048. and so this would

  1049. be a great opportunity

  1050. for families

  1051. particularly men

  1052. that you know

  1053. it's not just for

  1054. people with biological

  1055. children

  1056. it's for every form

  1057. of fatherhood

  1058. just like mothers

  1059. and everybody in this

  1060. room

  1061. every man in this

  1062. room can in some

  1063. way

  1064. we've all had

  1065. fathers

  1066. we all

  1067. can serve

  1068. as spiritual

  1069. fathers

  1070. right

  1071. to others in the

  1072. community

  1073. and so it's for

  1074. guys in your life

  1075. that you think

  1076. might be encouraged

  1077. you should invite

  1078. them

  1079. that would be a

  1080. great step

  1081. we actually have

  1082. Sharon has printed

  1083. beautiful invitations

  1084. you can take one

1085. you can give it to

  1086. somebody

  1087. say you should come

  1088. it'll be fun

  1089. you'll get a burger

  1090. come to worship

  1091. with us

  1092. and then stay for

  1093. the cookout

1094. so that would be a

  1095. great thing you could

  1096. do right now

  1097. now this doesn't

  1098. mean that every

  1099. Christian has to

  1100. become a missionary

  1101. or an expert

  1102. apologist

  1103. or a Bible

  1104. scholar

  1105. but it does mean

  1106. that every Christian

  1107. is called to

  1108. participate in the

  1109. disciple making

  1110. life of the

  1111. church

  1112. we all have a

  1113. role to play

  1114. and this church

  1115. is full

  1116. of people

  1117. who are being

  1118. discipled

  1119. who need

  1120. others to pour

  1121. into their

  1122. lives

  1123. right

  1124. so let's

  1125. bring this

  1126. back to where

  1127. we started

  1128. how should

  1129. someone go

  1130. about building

  1131. a life worth

  1132. living

  1133. this feels

  1134. particularly relevant

  1135. this time of

  1136. year when there's

  1137. a lot of people

  1138. graduating

  1139. and thinking

  1140. about what's

  1141. next

  1142. how should

  1143. someone go

  1144. about building

  1145. a life worth

  1146. living

  1147. here's what

  1148. Jesus offers

  1149. he gives us

  1150. a new center

  1151. it's bad news

  1152. and good news

  1153. on the one hand

  1154. we're not the

  1155. center of the

  1156. universe

  1157. I'm sorry

  1158. our desires

  1159. are not

  1160. sovereign

  1161. I'm sorry

  1162. on the other

  1163. hand guess what

  1164. your fears

  1165. are not ultimate

  1166. your failures

  1167. are not final

  1168. because Jesus

  1169. is king

  1170. number two

  1171. he gives us

  1172. a new identity

  1173. he doesn't tell

  1174. us how to shape

  1175. up and get our

  1176. act together

  1177. so that we can

  1178. fit in

  1179. he pours his

  1180. love and grace

  1181. into our lives

  1182. now as we

  1183. are

  1184. he gives us

  1185. a new identity

  1186. as people who

  1187. share in the

  1188. life of God

  1189. who share in

  1190. the dance of

  1191. the Trinity

  1192. and then he

  1193. sends us out

  1194. and he gives us

  1195. a new purpose

  1196. to make disciples

  1197. and join with him

  1198. in the renewal

  1199. of all things

  1200. and if this

  1201. purpose sounds

  1202. too big for us

  1203. as we look around

  1204. it's because it is

  1205. it's way too big

  1206. for us

  1207. it's way too

  1208. big

  1209. it's way too

  1210. much

  1211. right

  1212. remember who

  1213. Jesus is speaking

  1214. to here

  1215. it's the last

  1216. point

  1217. even after

  1218. everything these

  1219. people have been

  1220. through together

  1221. Matthew tells us

  1222. that when Jesus

  1223. arrives

  1224. some get it

  1225. and they worship

  1226. and others

  1227. still doubt

  1228. and you'd be

  1229. so tempted

  1230. to say are you

  1231. kidding me

  1232. you saw this

  1233. guy die

  1234. and I was

  1235. standing right

  1236. in front of

  1237. you

  1238. and you're

  1239. like I'm

  1240. not so sure

  1241. even the fact

  1242. that there are

  1243. only 11

  1244. disciples

  1245. right

  1246. there's a

  1247. pang when you

  1248. read that

  1249. number 11

  1250. there should

  1251. have been

  1252. 12

  1253. so already

  1254. before the

  1255. movement even

  1256. got off the

  1257. ground

  1258. they've had

  1259. deception

  1260. and betrayal

  1261. by one of

  1262. their own

  1263. surely these

  1264. are not the

  1265. kind of people

  1266. that Jesus

  1267. would use

  1268. to go out

  1269. and change

  1270. the world

  1271. are they

  1272. right

  1273. the answer

  1274. is on their

  1275. own

  1276. no

  1277. no

  1278. they could

  1279. never pull

  1280. this off

  1281. on their

  1282. own

  1283. but Jesus

  1284. doesn't send

  1285. them out

  1286. alone

  1287. and Jesus

  1288. doesn't send

  1289. us out

  1290. alone

  1291. he says

  1292. and surely

  1293. I am with

  1294. you always

  1295. to the end

  1296. of the age

  1297. we don't go

  1298. alone

  1299. we go with

  1300. him

  1301. and we follow

  1302. him

  1303. so ultimately

  1304. friends our

  1305. confidence does

  1306. not rest

  1307. in us

  1308. it rests

  1309. in him

  1310. the one who

  1311. is here with

  1312. us right now

  1313. let's pray

  1314. Lord we thank

  1315. you for your

  1316. word

  1317. we thank you

  1318. for your

  1319. spirit

  1320. Lord we thank

  1321. you

  1322. father for

  1323. your love

  1324. and we thank

  1325. you Jesus

  1326. and we pray

  1327. that as we

  1328. come together

  1329. and confess

  1330. our faith

  1331. as we pray

  1332. as we confess

  1333. our sin

  1334. and hear your

  1335. grace spoken

  1336. into our lives

  1337. as we come

  1338. around your

  1339. table

  1340. to receive

  1341. your body

  1342. and blood

  1343. we pray

  1344. Lord

  1345. that these

  1346. ideas

  1347. would not

  1348. remain merely

  1349. ideas

  1350. that your
