Standing in the Counsel of God | Mark Estes

Good morning, North.

Wow. So good to see each of you. Today I

had the opportunity to uh attend the

Levites and Media Vites tribal wars

yesterday.

And I'd like to just give a testimony

that I think they all still left with

their salvation.

Most of them were still sanctified. So

God is good and he is on the throne

today. I want to talk to you this

morning though about a very serious

subject and that is standing in the

council of God. Standing in the council

of God. There's a passage of scripture.

You've heard it a lot because we are a

prophetic community. We're an apostolic

community. We believe in all of the

five-fold. And as a matter of fact, the

way we do ministry as a church is

through the five-fold. But in Amos

verse number 7, I want you to turn with

me quickly in your Bible and then we're

going to pray. Amos chapter 3 verse

number 7. The word says, "Surely the

Lord does nothing

unless he reveals his secret to his

servants, the prophets."

Look at that. Surely the Lord does

nothing

unless he reveals his secret

to his servants, the prophets. So take a

moment, lift your hands with me. Come

on, everybody, lift your hands. Pray

this prayer with me. Holy Spirit,

>> open my ears that I can hear what you

have to say. Open my heart. Make it

receptive. I give you permission to move

deep in my life to form my heart to form

my character. Jesus have your way in me

today.

>> Amen.

There's another passage of scripture in

Psalm 25:14

Psalms 25:14

where David said, "The secret of the

Lord is with those who fear him and he

will show them his covenant." I I love

that. The secret of the Lord is with

those who fear him, and he will show

them his covenant. One of the greatest

privileges that we have as servants of

God is to access the counsel of God. You

see, God doesn't operate in secrecy

toward his covenant people. No,

scripture reveals a consistent pattern.

God reveals his counsel before he

releases his action. There's revelation

before what happens. And so Amos

declares this clearly in Amos 3:17.

Before the judgment fell upon Israel,

God revealed his intentions to his

prophets. Now, the tragedy of Amos's

generation is not unlike a lot in our

generation. It wasn't the absence of

revelation. It was the rejection

of revelation. And so you if you read

the book of Amos, you see this vision as

it becomes visible when you compare Amos

3:7 to Amos chapter 7 verse 10-17 where

Amos 7:10–17

the prophet Amos and the priest Amziah

are having a confrontation at the altar

at Bethl. Amaziah was the priest at

Bethl during the reign of Jeroboam II.

And Amosiah complains to the king that

Amos is a troublemaker. He's causing

problems in the kingdom with his promise

with his prophecies. And he and and

Amosiah tells Amos, he says, "You just

need to leave Israel and go back to

Judah and just preach there." But Amos

replies to him. He says, "I'm not a

professional prophet. I was a shepherd

and I was content.

I was a farmer, but God called me to

deliver this message to Israel.

But Amaziah tried to silence God's word.

And then Amos began to declare judgment

that would come upon Amziah's family.

And Israel would eventually be taken

into exile. And so this conflict wasn't

just a personal clash. It wasn't a

conflict of personalities or, you know,

you get with some folks and and and they

just rub you the wrong way. No, no, this

wasn't that at all. This was the clash

between two spiritual positions.

One standing in the council of God and

the other protecting institutional

religion.

So what is the council of God? Let's

look at the Hebrew word counsel. It's

actually used here in Amos 3:7 where

where he says surely the Lord does

nothing unless he reveals his secret.

The Hebrew word sod

unless he reveals his secret to his

servants, the prophets. Now that word

that is translated secrets here is the

Hebrew word sowed and and it literally

means confidential counsel. It means

secret deliberation. It means an inner

conver inner circle conversation. It's

like you've entered into the council

chamber. And so in in ancient

neareastern language, this word referred

to a king's private council meeting.

This is where strategies were made,

where decisions were discussed before

the king would carry them out. And so,

it's kind of like what happens in the

situation room at the White House.

There's counsel, there's deliberation,

there's talk, and then the president

makes a decision and the joint chiefs of

staff and the generals take that, the

secretary of war, they take that and

they carry out what was deliberated in

the situation room. And so Amos chapter

3:7 literally says, "God does nothing

without first revealing his counsel

decisions to his prophets." And so the

concept here is of a divine council. And

scripture repeatedly describes God

inviting prophets into his

deliberations.

In Exodus chapter 33, you see God

inviting Moses in. In Exodus 33:11, so

Exodus 33:11

the Lord spoke to Moses face to face as

a man speaks with his friend. You see

this in Jeremiah in Jeremiah chapter 23

Jeremiah 23:18

verse 18. For who has stood in the

counsel of the Lord and who has

perceived and heard his word and who has

marked his word and heard it. You see

this in the psalmist David in Psalm

Psalms 25:14

25:14.

He said, "The secret of the Lord is with

those who fear him, and he will show

them his covenant." That's the same word

in Psalm 25:14.

The secret of the Lord is with those who

fear him is the same word that's used in

Amos 3:7. Sowed. The secret of the Lord.

Same word. And so this reveals a really

important principle that you need to get

down into your spirit. And that is this.

God shares his plans with those who walk

closely with him.

closely with him. And so you see this

pattern of revelation before God takes

action. God brings revelation and then

God works. And so Amos establishes this

principle, this sequence in chapter 3.

And and he and how does he do it? He

does it through rhetorical questions.

And he explains the that the events that

are going to take place, these are not

just some random happen of coincidence.

This is not something that's just

random. He said if a lion roars,

there's prey.

He said if a trap springs, there is

something that has triggered it. If

calamity comes to a city, it doesn't

happen without a cause. And then he

delivers this key principle. Surely the

Lord does nothing unless he reveals his

secret to his servants, the prophets.

This means that God speaks before he

acts. And then you have the biblical

example of the flood. When the flood

took place, God revealed the judgment to

Noah before the before the flood came.

In Genesis 6:22, Noah did. The Bible

Genesis 6:22

said, "According to all that God had

commanded him, so he did." Sodom and

Gomorrah, God disclosed his intentions

to Abraham in Genesis chapter 18.

An incredible passage of scripture. It

says that the Lord spoke to Abraham or

let me I'm sorry, got the wrong

verse here. Genesis chapter 3:1 17, the

Lord said, "Shall I hide from Abraham

what I'm doing?" He disclosed it to

Abraham before. And then you had the the

debate and the the negotiation between

Abraham and God about how many righteous

people would need to be there for the

city to be spared. And then God revealed

his plan to Moses before the plagues

took place. He revealed his plan to

Judah. God warned Judah through the

prophet Jeremiah before they were taken

into exile. And so you see this pattern

throughout the Bible. Revelation

precedes intervention.

Now I want you to notice the prophet who

stood in God's counsel. Amos exemplifies

a person who had access to the counsel

of God. He wasn't a professional

prophet. He described himself in this

way in Amos chapter 3

verse number 14 or Amos 7 rather 14. He

said I was not a prophet. I was no

prophet. He said nor was I the son of a

prophet. I wasn't born into this. But he

said, "I was a sheepreeder

and I was a tender of syc a farmer. I

raised sheep and I took care of sycamore

trees.

>> I was a farmer." He didn't have

institutional authority. What he had was

divine revelation.

Now when a person stands in the council

of God, positions become secondary to

obedience.

You don't have to have a title to bring

a word from God.

>> You don't need something hanging on the

wall recognizing who you are or what

you've accomplished. What you have to

have is intimacy with the Lord. you need

and when you when God reveals to you,

all you need then is obedience.

>> And so there's a clash that took place

at Bethl. There was a real showdown that

happened at Bethl in Amos chapter 7

beginning with verse 10.

Amos chapter 7 verse 10. Amziah the

Amos 7:10

priest of Bethl sent to Jeroboam the

king saying, "Amos conspired against you

in the midst of the house of Israel. The

land is not able to bear the land is not

able to bear his words." And then thus

Amos said, "Jeroboam, listen to this.

This is a word to the king. Jeroboam

shall die by the sword, and Israel shall

surely be led away captive from their

own land." Then Amziah said to Amos,

"Go, you sear, flee to the land of

Judah, eat bread, and there prophesy,

but never again prophesy at Bethl, for

it's the king's sanctuary, and it's the

royal residence." Then Amos answered and

said to Amziah, "I'm no prophet. I was

uh nor was I a son of a prophet, but I

was a sheepreeder and a tender of

sycamore trees." Then the Lord took me

as I followed the flock, and the Lord

said to me, "Go prophesy to my people

Israel." Now therefore hear the word of

the Lord. You say do not prophesy

against Israel and do not spout against

the house of Isaac. Therefore says the

Lord, your wife shall be a harlot in the

city. Your sons and your daughters shall

fall by the sword. Your land shall be

divided by survey line. And you shall

die in a defiled land. and Israel shall

surely be led away captive from his own

land. So you see this incredible

confrontation Isaiah or Amos chapter 7,

it reveals what happens when God count

God's counsel confronts corrupt

religion.

So the altar at Bethl was a mixture.

There was a mixture of political

control, a mixture of religious ritual

with no substance to it and then a

mixture of national. They put their

identity on an altar that had been

corrupted by idolatry and perversion.

And so Amaziah brings an accusation in

verse 10 and he says that Amos has

conspired against you against the king

in the midst of the house of Israel. And

so Amziah interpreted the prophecy that

Amos gave as political rebellion and not

divine revelation.

And so this happens

when institutional

leaders lose spiritual

sensitivity.

This church can never be so big that we

don't hear the voice of the Lord. You

can never be so prosperous and so

wealthy that you don't hear the voice of

the Lord. YOU CAN NEVER BE SO POWERFUL

THAT YOU DON'T HEAR AND VALUE THE VOICE

OF THE LORD. And so AMAZIAH TELLS AMOS,

"GO, GET OUT, FLEE. Go home and eat your

FOOD THERE. PROPHESY IN YOUR OWN LAND,

BUT NEVER AGAIN prophesy at Bethl."

Oh, how corrupt Bethl had gotten. This

was an altar at Bethl that was

established by Jacob. This is where he

saw the gate of heaven and angels were

ascending and descending and and he he

recognized this is the house of God. But

that altar had gotten corrupted.

JEROBOAM BROUGHT IDOLATRY and perversion

in and corrupted the altar.

And Messiah just said, "Take your

message somewhere else. We don't want

what you've got here."

Why?

Because the prophetic truth

threatened the religious political

system.

And so Amos responded

with such clarity. He said, "I didn't

ask for this. I didn't call myself to

this. I was minding my own business,

tending my own sheep, growing my own

sycamore trees when the Lord spoke to

me. And you can almost like hear the

echo of Jeremiah's sentiment where he

said, "I can't speak any longer in his

name because every time I speak, I I

just get insults and and they want to

kill me." But he said, "His word is shut

up in my bones like a burning fire."

Jeremiah said, "I cannot hold it back. I

have to release what what God has given

me. And so Amos is saying, I'm not here

by appointment. I'm here by assignment.

>> THAT'S WHAT THIS WORLD IS NEEDING.

THAT'S WHAT THIS CITY IS NEEDING. THAT'S

WHAT THIS NATION IS NEEDING. SOME MEN

AND WOMEN OF GOD WHO ARE NOT GONE

THROUGH THE INSTITUTIONALIZED RELIGIOUS

FORM, BUT THEY HAVE AN ASSIGNMENT FROM

THE LORD. I'VE GOT TO RELEASE THE WORD

OF THE LORD.

So there's a danger

in rejecting God's counsel.

>> Amziah rejected the word of the Lord.

And as a result, Amos pronounced

judgment on him. He pronounced judgment

on his family. Said, "Your family is

going to suffer.

Your family is going to suffer." He

said, "The whole nation of Israel,

BECAUSE YOU REJECTED THE WORD of the

Lord, the whole nation is going into

exile."

And sure enough, in 7:22 BC, the

Assyrian Empire conquered the northern

kingdom of Israel. And the tragedy was

not just that they were conquered, but

that God warned them. God warned them,

but they rejected the voice that stood

in his counsel.

Listen, friend, who are you listening

to?

>> Who are you paying attention to?

You're not going to get this on your

favorite radio preacher or television

preacher. You're not going to get this

in institutionalized religion. If you

want to be prepared for the calamity

that comes to this world, you need TO

HAVE SOMEONE WHO YOU'RE LISTENING TO

THAT STANDS IN THE COUNSEL OF GOD.

>> And then you see this this pattern

continued in the New Testament. And so

the concept of of sharing that divine

counsel is just continued in John chap

15

verse 15. Jesus said, "No longer do I

call you servants, for a servant doesn't

know what his master is doing, but I've

called you friends. For all things that

I heard from my father, I've made known

to you." Do you get that? You get in the

presence of Jesus. You get in the divine

counsel of the Lord. Everything that the

father tells the son, he imparts it to

you through the holy spirit. The holy

spirit reveals the deep things of God.

In 1 Corinthians chap 2:10, but God has

revealed them to us through his spirit.

For the spirit SEARCHES ALL THINGS, YES,

THE DEEP THINGS OF GOD.

Just before that, he said, "Eye hasn't

seen, ear hasn't heard, neither has it

been revealed to THE HEART OF MAN WHAT

GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE THAT LOVE

HIM." BUT WHEN YOU GET IN THE DIVINE

COUNSEL, HE SHOWS YOU WHAT'S GOING TO

COME.

So standing in God's divine counsel

isn't limited to prophets.

You don't have to be recognized as a

national prophet. You don't have to be

recognized as a regional prophet. You

don't have to be recognized as A CITY

PROPHET. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE RECOGNIZED

AS A LOCAL PROPHET. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

IS WALK SO CLOSELY WITH THE LORD THAT

YOU HEAR THE VOICE OF THE LORD.

>> That's it.

It's his presence.

So how

how

pastor can I stand

in the counsel of God today? How can I

stand in God's counsel? Well, number

one, you need to have intimacy with God.

Psalm 25:14, "The secret of the Lord is

Psalms 25:14

with those who fear him, and he will

show them his covenant." So, revelation

flows out of relationship.

God shares deeper insight with those who

honor him, with those who listen to him,

and with those who walk with him. So,

get this in your spirit. You can't live

like the world and stand in the counsel

of the most high God.

>> You stand in the counsel of God through

the word of God. Do you understand that

the word of God is the primary way that

God reveals his counsel today? It's

through his word. It's through the

scripture. Psalm 119 verse 105, David

Psalms 119:105

said, "Your word is a lamp unto my feet

and a light unto my path." So the more

that you as a believer saturate your

lives with the word of God, the clearer

God's direction is going to come in your

life.

How do you stand in the counsel of God?

Through the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said in John 16:13,

John 16:13

he said, "However, when he, the Spirit

of truth, has come, he will guide you

into all truth, FOR HE WILL NOT speak of

his own authority, but whatever he

hears, he will speak, and he will tell

you things to come."

He didn't say, "I'm reserving this for

the five-fold prophets." He said, "The

spirit of truth, the Holy Ghost will

give you the counsel of God." The spirit

reveals the heart of God, the timing of

God, and the strategy of God. So, let me

give you a simple plan of action. First

of all, how about seeking God's counsel

before you make major decisions?

You know what grieves me as as a pastor?

And Patricia and I have been doing this

since 1982. I've been credentialed since

1979. That's I'm old. I don't look it,

but I'm old.

But what grieves me as a pastor is when

someone comes in my office. Well, I got

to say at least they come in because a

lot of folk just disappear.

But what grieves me is when they come in

my office and they inform me of a

decision that they've already made that

affects their life, that affects their

family, that affects their eternity

without asking for prayer.

>> Hello

Mhm.

Yeah.

Oh, now I now that gets uncomfortable.

But Proverbs 3 verse 5 and 6 says, and I

think you probably could quote it with

me, trust in the Lord with all your

heart. Lean not to your own

understanding. In all your ways

acknowledge him and he will direct your

path. He will direct your path. So I

want I want you to ask some questions.

Ask yourself some questions. What is God

saying? Number two, what is the spirit

revealing? Number three, what does the

scripture confirm? What does If God

tells you something that doesn't measure

up to the book, honey, that's not the

word of God.

>> He's not going to tell you something

that's not validated right here in the

word.

>> That is your measuring rod. That's how

you CAN KNOW IS THIS GOD OR NOT. GOD

WILL CONFIRM IT THROUGH HIS PEOPLE AND

HE'LL CONFIRM IT THROUGH HIS WORD.

>> AMEN, PASTOR. BOY, that's good preaching

today.

And then number two, you need to

cultivate sensitivity, spiritual

sensitivity.

Israel rejected Amos because they had

become spiritually dull. They allowed

their altar to be corrupt. How can you

corrupt your altar? Have you corrupted

your altar?

That means if an altar is corrupted,

you're allowing things there that not

God.

You're taking into your temple things

that are unholy. Your body is a temple

of the HOLY SPIRIT.

>> SO WHAT you watch, what you read, what

you listen to, WHO YOU HANG AROUND HAS

EFFECT ON YOUR TEMPLE. OH MY LORD, help

me. Jesus,

>> YOU WANT TO DEFILE THE temple of God and

then complain cuz you don't hear the

voice of God.

>> Come on.

>> What is it Sam says all? Give me a

continental break.

We have to remain sensitive to the voice

of God.

Matthew 11:15

Matthew 11:15

and then in Revelation 2 and 3, he who

has ears to hear, let him hear what the

spirit says to the church.

So, some practical ways that you can do

this. How about having a definite,

specific, measurable time in prayer?

Just don't talk to God when you're

eating and when you're going to sleep.

How about setting aside some time to

fast?

>> You really want to hear God? Push the

plate back.

>> Pray. Spend that time praying. Humble

yourself before the Lord. How about

meditate on his word. Get in the book.

Let the book fill your mind. Meditate on

the word of God. How about say, "Holy

Spirit, give me some spiritual

discernment.

>> Help me to discern what's going on.

Another way you can get in the council

of God is to value prophetic voices.

You know, throughout history, God has

raised up voices. Prophetic voices warn.

Prophetic voices correct. Prophetic

voices guide the people of God.

But prophetic voices are often rejected

because they challenge comfort.

The word of God warns us in 1

1 Thessalonians 5:20

Thessalonians 5:20, "Do not despise

prophecies."

If God gives what would be perceived as

a negative word, do don't you

understand? He doesn't do anything till

he reveals his secrets to his servants,

the prophets. He's telling you in

advance, you need to pray. You need to

humble yourself. You need to seek his

face. If my people which are called by

th by my my name will humble themselves

and pray turn from their wicked ways.

Then I will hear from heaven. I will

forgive their sin and I will heal their

land. God's giving you a warning that if

you don't straighten up, if you don't

get serious with me, something bad is

going to happen. And so we want a

healthy church. And so as a healthy

church, we will learn to discern

prophetic truth rather than suppress it.

We want to hear the counsel of God. And

every word is not a real positive word.

There was a point that I just I didn't

want to hang around the prophets.

They kept talking about the calamity and

all the junk that was going to happen. I

said, "Man, I don't need that. I'm

depressed enough."

But it's a warning.

And then I had to embrace it. God, why

are you telling me all this? It's not to

make me depressed. It's It's not to rob

me of my joy. No, it's to prepare me so

that when it comes, I'M READY TO STAND

SO THAT WHEN THE FINANCIAL trial comes,

I don't care. I'M LIVING IN GAN. WHEN

THE PROBLEM COMES, I KNOW THE HEALER.

HE'S JEHOVAH RAFA. I KNOW JEHOVAH GYRA.

I KNOW JEHOVAH NI. AND HIS BANNER OVER

ME IS LOVE. AND WHEN I embrace his love,

he leads ME FROM VICTORY TO VICTORY to

victory. I'M THE HEAD AND NOT THE TAIL.

I KNOW WHO I AM. I KNOW WHO'S I AM.

>> So Amos

chose obedience over acceptance.

If you want the counsel of God, choose

obedience over acceptance.

Even when it's unpopular.

Standing in ca in God's counsel may mean

rejection. It may mean misunderstanding

and it may mean opposition

but obedience to God has to take

priority.

Acts 5 verse 29

Acts 5:29

Peter said and the other apostles

answered and said we ought to obey God

rather than men.

Few months ago, I had the opportunity to

meet with a missionary to Iran,

but he wasn't in Iran.

He had to stay in one of the border

countries

and minister to Iranian believers and

pastors that would travel across the

border because he couldn't go into Iran.

There is such a strong underground

church in Iran.

There's an incredibly strong underground

church in China,

the most oppressed places.

There is there is a group of believers

that have an iron backbone and they

stand on the word of God and they live

from the presence of God. Could you do

that?

Oh, we're Americans. We have THE FIRST

AMENDMENT. FREEDOM OF RELIGION.

Let me tell you something. That freedom

can go quickly by the wayside. It can

turn on a dime.

Could you stand

when it becomes illegal to do this?

Does your religion

go deeper than your politics?

Just asking.

Don't stone me yet.

The tragedy of Israel wasn't the absence

of God's voice. It was the rejection of

God's voice. the rejection of those who

carried it. So the challenge that we

have today is will we stand in the

council or will we silence the voices

that do stand in the council? Because

history

repeats this truth over and over and

over that God discloses his plans before

he executes his purpose.

He always does.

He is a God that is the same yesterday,

today,

and forever.

Are you in

the counsel of God?

Are you listening to those who are in

the counsel of God?

There are a lot of voices around,

but I'm going to tell you how I how I do

it.

Number one, I'm not going to get excited

or depressed at one word. The first

thing I'm going to do is I'm going to

look at the word and see, does this

measure up? And then I'm going to look

at the man that gives thee word and I'm

going to say, is there fruit?

>> Is there fruit in that life?

And if there's not fruit,

akuna matata.

Listen,

I love you,

but you got to get selective on what

table you sit down and eat from.

Quit eating up all the junk food

>> of a bloated, obese, dying church

>> and start getting the lean meat of the

word of God, the nutrition that you need

from the presence and the spirit of God.

Eat the bread of life and throw the junk

that processed, overprocessed religion

away.

What you're doing in the physical

should reflect what's happening in the

spirit.

>> There are a lot of people in America

that are getting away from processed

food, but they suck down processed

religion every day.

>> We take better care of our temporary

body that's going to pass away and turn

to dust than we do our spirit man that's

going to live forever.

>> And the message of the Lord is get your

house in order.

Get your house in order. Get your house

in order because this the day of the

Lord is approaching quickly.

>> I am telling you, you need to listen

with your spirit and take heed to what

pastor is telling you this morning. The

day of the Lord is near. He is coming

like a thief in the night. The day of

the Lord is near. Sound the alarm on my

holy mountain. Call a sacred fast and a

solemn assembly. The day of the Lord is

near. It is a day of judgment AND IT IS

A day of blessing. BUT IT DEPENDS ON HOW

YOU LISTEN IN THE COUNCIL OF THE LORD,

WHICH BATTLE, WHICH WHICH ground you

fall in.

>> So, if you're here this morning, you're

not sure if you were to die tonight that

you'd go to heaven. I want to give you

an opportunity.

Quit playing religion.

>> Quit it.

>> It's time for you to start seeking God.

Don't pacify your conscience by coming

to church once a week or watching

online.

Determine that you're going to actually

be a believer Monday through Sunday.

>> There not any off days. You might take

an off day on your diet. You might take

an off day from the gym, but you can't

take an off day from God. Either you are

or you're not. And if you've been

playing with religion, you need to pray

this prayer with me right now. I feel a

conviction of the Holy Ghost this

morning that goes to the depth of my

soul. God in his mercy is giving some of

you a chance. Some of you who've been

playing with him. Some of you who have

who have not taken seriously what God's

spoken to you and you've KEPT DOING JUNK

THAT GOD TOLD YOU NOT to do.

>> YOU'VE MADE A DELIBERATE DECISION OF

YOUR WILL. YOU KNOW WHAT THAT'S CALLED?

IT'S CALLED SIN. I DON'T CARE HOW YOU

DRESS it up. I don't care what you make

it look like. IF GOD SAID DON'T DO IT

AND YOU DO it to him who knows TO DO

RIGHT AND DOESN'T DO IT, IT'S A SIN.

And this is your chance.

You have an opportunity right now to get

right with God.

Don't waste that opportunity. Don't

throw it away because you're not

promised another one. It doesn't matter

if you're here or you're watching

online. If God's speaking to you and

dealing with matters of your heart, lay

it on the altar.

>> So, if you don't know Jesus or if you've

been playing with him,

pray this prayer with me.

But I beg you, mean it from your heart.

Get serious with the Lord.

If you will, I promise you, you will see
