  1. Good

  2. morning, North Palm.

  3. Amen. Wow. So good to see you this

  4. morning. God is so good. I have Man,

  5. worship was so powerful. And then the

  6. move in the altar, man, it was so great.

  7. I'm excited about what God is doing. I

  8. want to ask you if you would to turn

  9. with me in the Bible to 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  10. chapter 12. 1 Corinthians chapter 12.

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  11. We're going to look at verse 27

  12. through31.

  13. Um that that's a wonderful chapter. I

  14. love Paul's writing. I love all of his

  15. letters. Um but we're going to focus in

  16. on a truth in these verses. And I want

  17. to talk to you this morning about the

  18. family of God.

  19. The family of God. And the and the fact

  20. that you are not

  21. on your own.

  22. You're not on your own. So, would you

  23. take a moment and just lift your hands

  24. with me? Come on, everybody. Lift your

  25. hands with me. Pray this prayer. Holy

  26. Spirit,

  27. >> open my ears

  28. >> that I can hear what you have to say.

  29. >> Open my heart.

  30. >> Make it receptive.

  31. >> Receptive.

  32. >> I give you permission

  33. >> to move deep in my life.

  34. >> To form my heart

  35. >> to form my character.

  36. Jesus, have your way in me today.

  37. >> Amen.

  38. All right. 1 Corinthians 12 27. Now you

  39. are the body of Christ

  40. and members individually.

  41. I want to read that again. Now you are

  42. the body of Christ and members

  43. individually.

  44. Verse 28. And God has appointed these in

  45. the church. First apostles, second

  46. prophets, third teachers, and after that

  47. miracles, and then gifts of healing,

  48. helps, administrations, varieties of

  49. tongues. Are all apostles? Are all

  50. prophets? Are all teachers? Are all

  51. workers of miracles? Do all have the

  52. gifts of healing? Do all speak with

  53. tongues? Do all interpret?

  54. but earnestly desire the best gifts

  55. and yet I show you a more excellent way.

  56. Now go back to verse 27. Look at that

  57. again. Now you are the body of Christ

  58. and members

  59. individually.

  60. You see God did not design you to live

  61. and to function alone.

  62. He placed you in his family

  63. on purpose

  64. for purpose.

  65. You see, God has a design for family.

  66. And this is a foundational truth that we

  67. really have to recover in this

  68. generation that you were not just saved

  69. from something.

  70. You were saved into

  71. and for something.

  72. Now you need to understand you were

  73. created for community.

  74. You were fashioned for fellowship.

  75. You were formed for family. And in the

  76. word of God there is no such thing as

  77. isolated believers. There are no solo

  78. saints in scripture.

  79. From generation or from Genesis to

  80. Revelation,

  81. God is always forming a people.

  82. He's not just saving individuals.

  83. He is forming a people.

  84. Now, Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12,

  85. and and when he writes this, he's not

  86. just trying to correct theology,

  87. but he's trying to correct how believers

  88. see themselves

  89. in relationship to one another.

  90. And his conclusion in verse 27 is

  91. unmistakable. He said, 'Now you are the

  92. body of Christ and members individually.

  93. So I want you to do me a favor. Look at

  94. the person next to you. Look them in the

  95. eye and tell them, "You are not on your

  96. own any longer."

  97. >> You see, the church is a body. It is not

  98. a building.

  99. We've got to get this concept straight

  100. in our minds.

  101. And so Jesus uses one of the most

  102. powerful metaphors in scripture.

  103. The church is the body of Christ.

  104. He didn't say like a body. He said the

  105. church is

  106. the body of Christ. Now the word body in

  107. Greek literally means a living

  108. functioning organism.

  109. And when he said members, you are

  110. members individually. The word members

  111. literally is talking about limbs. It's

  112. talking about organs, indispensable

  113. parts.

  114. You are the body of Christ and you are

  115. members. You are a part. You are a you

  116. are an organ. You are a limb, a hand, a

  117. foot.

  118. And so that means the church is not an

  119. organization.

  120. It is not an institution. The church is

  121. alive.

  122. And we are interconnected.

  123. Membership's not about being on a list.

  124. It's not about being on a roll.

  125. It's not about being in a book.

  126. It is about being a vital organ

  127. in a living body.

  128. So what does that mean?

  129. You don't attend a body.

  130. You function

  131. >> in a body.

  132. Now

  133. if the hand

  134. disconnects from the body,

  135. it doesn't become independent.

  136. It becomes dead.

  137. You are you getting what I'm putting

  138. down this morning? It becomes lifeless.

  139. Imagine a a power grid for a a city

  140. and each home in that city is wired into

  141. the power grid. It's wired into the

  142. larger system.

  143. Now, if one house

  144. in the neighborhood in the city

  145. disconnects from the grid,

  146. the grid still functions,

  147. but that house

  148. is powerless.

  149. that house sets in the dark.

  150. So disconnection doesn't hurt the grid

  151. first,

  152. it hurts the one who disconnects.

  153. So in the same way you need to

  154. understand you don't diminish the church

  155. by isolating.

  156. You diminish your own spiritual

  157. vitality. You diminish your own life.

  158. You disconnect from the living body and

  159. eventually you die.

  160. Amen, pastor. Boy, that's that's good

  161. preaching.

  162. Sometimes you just got to amen yourself,

  163. you know.

  164. You see, isolation is not independence.

  165. It's disconnection.

  166. So God set you in the family on purpose

  167. for a purpose. Look at verse 28.

  168. And God has appointed these in the

  169. church. First apostles, second prophets,

  170. third teachers, after that miracles,

  171. then the gifts of healings, helps,

  172. administrations,

  173. varieties of tongues. He said that God

  174. has appointed

  175. these. That word appointed means to be

  176. placed. It means to be set, to be

  177. arranged

  178. intentionally.

  179. Intentionally.

  180. This means that your placement in the

  181. body is not accidental.

  182. It's not some random thing of chance

  183. that that you took some assessment and

  184. oh wow, that's just random. You just

  185. happen to be what you are. No. No, you

  186. are intentionally placed, set and

  187. arranged in the body.

  188. This means that your placement is not

  189. accident. It means that your role is not

  190. random and your function is not

  191. optional.

  192. God did not just save you. He positioned

  193. you. He placed you in the body. And so,

  194. here's the key principle. You're not

  195. just called, you are placed. You are

  196. placed. So in a culture that says find

  197. your preference.

  198. God says fulfill your placement. Fulfill

  199. your purpose. Do what you were created

  200. to do.

  201. I love orchestras. But you know in an

  202. orchestra the violin can't say, "I think

  203. I'll play percussion today."

  204. The conductor assigns the placement

  205. based on the design.

  206. So if one section ignores its its role,

  207. then the music becomes noise.

  208. But when every part functions correctly,

  209. there is a harmony. There is a sweet

  210. mealy. There is a a beautiful sound that

  211. erupts when every part comes together.

  212. So you need to understand that you are

  213. not selfassigned.

  214. Oh dear Lord Jesus, help me communicate

  215. THIS PROPERLY. YOU DON'T ASSIGN

  216. YOURSELF.

  217. >> YOU ARE GOD POSITIONED.

  218. every member is necessary.

  219. And so what's Paul doing? He dismantles

  220. comparison

  221. by asking rhetorical questions.

  222. In verse 29 and 30, are all apostles?

  223. Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are

  224. all workers of miracles? Do all have the

  225. gifts of healing? Do all speak with

  226. tongues? Do all interpret? And the

  227. expected answer is no.

  228. So here's some insight.

  229. Diversity is not a flaw.

  230. IT IS THE DESIGN OF GOD.

  231. GOD MADE YOU WITH YOUR GIFTING, with

  232. your calling, WITH YOUR TALENT. HE

  233. POSITIONED YOU IN THE BODY. IF EVERY ONE

  234. OF US WERE THE SAME, there would BE NO

  235. FUNCTION. THERE WOULD BE NO BALANCE.

  236. THERE WOULD be no maturity. We would

  237. have no use on this earth.

  238. So the truth is this.

  239. Uniformity

  240. would destroy the body.

  241. We're not all the same.

  242. And that person that gets on your last

  243. nerve fulfills a specific

  244. calling and place IN THE BODY.

  245. SO GET OVER YOURSELF.

  246. >> IT'S not all about you.

  247. >> We need each other.

  248. >> What makes the body powerful is not

  249. sameness, but it's synergy.

  250. IT'S WHEN THESE DIFFERENT PARTS ALL COME

  251. TOGETHER AND ALL WORK TOGETHER THAT

  252. THERE'S POWER, THAT THERE'S MOMENTUM,

  253. THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING.

  254. So synergy

  255. is when two or more elements,

  256. people's,

  257. systems, ideas,

  258. when they work together in a way that

  259. produces a result that is greater than

  260. the sum of their individual efforts.

  261. So to put it plainly, it's the idea

  262. that together

  263. we are better

  264. than we are apart.

  265. So in a team

  266. individuals might have different

  267. strengths

  268. but when they collaborate effectively

  269. their combined output is stronger than

  270. what each one could achieve by itself.

  271. In business,

  272. companies

  273. will merge

  274. so that they can create synergy by

  275. combining their resources, by combining

  276. their expertise, by combining their

  277. markets to achieve a greater efficiency

  278. and a greater profit.

  279. So the concept

  280. is widely used in in business, in

  281. science, and psychology to describe

  282. cooperative

  283. interactions

  284. that create added value. God help the

  285. church grasp this

  286. cooperative interactions

  287. that provide or create added value.

  288. But you understand that being in the

  289. family of God

  290. requires commitment.

  291. You can't have synergy without having

  292. commitment. You can't be a functioning

  293. part of the body without being

  294. committed. And so here's where this

  295. confronts the modern culture that we

  296. live in. We live in a time of

  297. independent individualism. We live in a

  298. time of consumer Christianity. Hear me

  299. now. We live in a time of church hopping

  300. without covenant.

  301. Oh, pastor about to go there.

  302. Buckle up now.

  303. Years ago, Rick Warren wrote wrote a

  304. book and I would encourage you if you've

  305. read it, read it again. If you haven't

  306. read it, you need to read it. The

  307. purpose-driven life.

  308. And in there he calls he calls these

  309. people spiritual orphans.

  310. There is an orphan mentality

  311. in so many churches and in the ministry.

  312. There are orphans trying to be fathers

  313. and they don't know how to do it.

  314. They've never seen it, never experienced

  315. it. They they have an orphan mentality.

  316. He also calls them, this is kind of

  317. comical,

  318. bunny believers.

  319. Not funny

  320. bunny like bugs bunny bunny believers

  321. because they're people who hop from

  322. place to place.

  323. They avoid accountability.

  324. You try to hold them accountable, they

  325. hop somewhere else. You try to deal with

  326. some of their mess.

  327. Oh, don't you know Holy Ghost not going

  328. to do nothing with you unless you let

  329. him in your mess?

  330. Amen, pastor. Boy, that's good preaching

  331. this morning.

  332. They resist commitment,

  333. but the Bible

  334. Bible paints a different picture.

  335. There's no rugged individualism in the

  336. Bible. There's no no I'm on my own

  337. attitude in in the Bible. IN THE BIBLE,

  338. 50 times over 50 times in the New

  339. Testament, we see the term one another.

  340. We are commanded to love one another. We

  341. are commanded to serve one another. We

  342. are COMMANDED TO BEAR ONE ANOTHER'S

  343. BURDENS. We're commanded TO FORGIVE

  344. one another. WE ARE COMMANDED TO

  345. ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER. AND WE ARE

  346. COMMANDED to submit to one another.

  347. >> So the question

  348. is this,

  349. who are you working with and who are you

  350. connected to?

  351. Because you cannot fulfill the one

  352. another commands of scripture in

  353. isolation.

  354. And and here's another truth I want to

  355. just put out there.

  356. You can't love Jesus and reject his

  357. church.

  358. >> Oh, I'm sorry. You didn't hear me. I I I

  359. I said you can't love Jesus

  360. and reject his church.

  361. The Bible gives two powerful images.

  362. The church is the body of Christ

  363. and the church is the bride of Christ.

  364. So let me make this plain.

  365. You can't say I love Jesus

  366. but I don't love or I don't need

  367. the church.

  368. >> That's like saying

  369. I love you. I just don't like your body.

  370. or I love you, but I don't like your

  371. wife.

  372. >> Don't be talking about my wife now.

  373. I mean that that we'll fight over that.

  374. Paul said in Ephesians 5:25

    Ephesians 5:25

  375. now and and this is one of those things,

  376. you know, every couple that comes in for

  377. premarital counseling, we get there.

  378. Ephesians 5

  379. talk about

  380. wives submitting to husbands and

  381. husbands loving wives. But look at look

  382. at this in verse 25. Husbands love your

  383. wives.

  384. Now, most women like to stop there. Most

  385. men don't like to stop there, frankly,

  386. because the next part is what makes it

  387. hard.

  388. Husbands, love your wives just as Christ

  389. also loved the church and gave himself

  390. for her.

  391. Oh, now that'll set your marriage free.

  392. But this is the way. Here's the truth.

  393. Jesus loved the church

  394. and he gave himself for the church.

  395. The eklesia, the calledout ones, the

  396. governing body. Jesus died, gave himself

  397. for the church. So the purpose of the

  398. church in Matthew 16:1 18, Jesus said,

    Matthew 16:1

  399. "And also I say to you that you are

  400. Peter and on this rock, I will build my

  401. church and the gates of Hades shall not

  402. prevail against it." Notice what Jesus

  403. did not say.

  404. He did not say, "I will build your

  405. platform."

  406. >> He did not say, "I WILL BUILD YOUR

  407. BRAND."

  408. There's a lot of branding going and I'm

  409. not against that. It's individual and

  410. each church has a niche in the body. But

  411. Jesus didn't say I'll build your brand.

  412. He didn't say I will build your

  413. ministry.

  414. Jesus said I will build my church and

  415. the gates of hell will not prevail

  416. against my church.

  417. So the core purpose of the church is to

  418. reveal CHRIST CORPORATELY.

  419. >> If the community is going to have a

  420. proper re revelation representation of

  421. Jesus, it has to come here.

  422. Our job is to re the world sees Jesus

  423. through HIS BODY. AND I REMIND YOU, YOU

  424. ARE THE BODY OF CHRIST.

  425. >> The purpose of the church, the core

  426. purpose is to build up believers.

  427. Gifts are for edification,

  428. not exhibition.

  429. Oh,

  430. >> the core purpose of the church is to

  431. function as a family,

  432. not as spectators.

  433. >> God didn't put you in the church to come

  434. and get your fat soul fed every week.

  435. He put you in the church to function,

  436. to participate in the body.

  437. The core purpose of the church is to

  438. advance God's mission.

  439. When Jesus was on earth, he worked

  440. through his physical body.

  441. But now he works through his spiritual

  442. body. So the church, his spiritual body

  443. is to enforce heaven's rule on earth.

  444. You got to get this. We're not an

  445. institution. We're not an organization.

  446. God didn't institute denominations.

  447. What he did was he purchased the church

  448. with his blood. He redeemed the church

  449. and the church the ecclesia is the

  450. governing body of Christ to enforce the

  451. rule of heaven on earth. That's why

  452. Jesus in Luke chap 11 when he taught

  453. them how to pray HE SAID WHEN YOU PRAY

  454. say our father in heaven

  455. HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME YOUR KINGDOM COME

  456. YOUR WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN

  457. HEAVEN.

  458. So the problem

  459. is the church

  460. is is the problem is using the church

  461. but not loving

  462. the church.

  463. Many Christians use the church. They

  464. just don't they just don't love it. They

  465. use it. They attend without commitment.

  466. They receive without giving

  467. and they consume

  468. without contributing.

  469. >> And they come up with all these sideline

  470. doctrines on why not to give.

  471. Why? I was confronted yesterday with

  472. somebody trying to convince me that

  473. tithing isn't biblical.

  474. I'm going to tell him, "Honey, you you

  475. you started too late to to bring that

  476. mess around here.

  477. I've already experienced what God will

  478. do.

  479. >> I've already experienced what God will

  480. do.

  481. >> So, biblical membership

  482. says you are responsible

  483. for the family you belong to.

  484. Somebody say pastor's on it today.

  485. So the solution, that's the problem. The

  486. solution is becoming a functioning

  487. family member.

  488. >> That's the solution. And Paul says in 1

    1 Corinthians 12:27

  489. Corinthians 12:27, "Now you are the body

  490. of Christ and members individually."

  491. This is identity language.

  492. You don't choose whether you're part of

  493. the body.

  494. Hello.

  495. You choose whether you will function in

  496. the body. You're part of the body. You

  497. have a talent. You have a gift. You have

  498. an ability. You have God-given ability.

  499. And you just can't take yourself out of

  500. the body. What you're making a decision

  501. is, am I going to function in the body?

  502. So too many churches are dysfunctional

  503. families.

  504. And we have so much drama. There is too

  505. much drama. There are too many power

  506. struggles.

  507. THERE THERE'S WAY TOO MUCH competition

  508. for position.

  509. There is too much insecurity.

  510. THERE'S TOO MUCH LACK of family

  511. identity.

  512. So what am I supposed to do?

  513. How about embrace your placement?

  514. Stop asking where am I the most

  515. comfortable. Please, oh dear Jesus,

  516. please stop asking where am I most

  517. comfortable. It's not about your

  518. comfort. Start asking about WHERE HAS

  519. GOD PLACED ME TO FUNCTION. HOW DO I

  520. FULFILL MY ROLE IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD?

  521. How about commit to a spiritual family?

  522. Move from attender to member. move from

  523. observer, reporter to a to a

  524. participant.

  525. How about starting to fulfill the one

  526. another commands?

  527. Identify specific people that you're

  528. encouraging. Identify people that you're

  529. serving. Identify people that you are

  530. praying for, that you are walking with.

  531. How about value every role?

  532. Honor the unseen.

  533. Do you know just to have this service

  534. here and to have an online presence,

  535. there are so many people you don't know.

  536. You never see them. THEY'RE THE BEHIND

  537. THE SCENE, BEHIND the camera, behind the

  538. computer, BEHIND THE LIGHTS. YOU DON'T

  539. EVER SEE THEM. THEY'RE NEVER ON THE

  540. STAGE.

  541. >> BUT THEY HAVE VALUE. THEY'RE UNNOTICED.

  542. VALUE THE UNNOTICED.

  543. value the behind the scenes people that

  544. don't get recognition because the body

  545. depends on them.

  546. How about pursue the gifts that build

  547. others?

  548. Corinthians 1 Corinthians 12:31, "But

    1 Corinthians 12:31

  549. earnestly desire the best gifts, and yet

  550. I'll show you a more excellent way."

  551. He didn't say

  552. the most visible gifts. He's he said the

  553. most edifying. So you need to anchor

  554. everything in love. You know this is

  555. such a powerful truth. Paul's

  556. transitioning to first Corinthians for a

  557. reason.

  558. Now you got to understand when when the

  559. when he wrote this letter, he didn't

  560. divide it into chapters and verses.

  561. It's a letter. Why do you read a letter?

  562. You read the whole thing. So there's no

  563. separation between between chapter 12

  564. and chapter 13. Chapter 13, the love

  565. chap. Oh, we all want to go to the love

  566. chapter, don't we?

  567. Oh, we got to go to the love chapter.

  568. But you can't separate that from chapter

  569. 12 and chapter 14 where Paul talks about

  570. the church and he talks about the gifts,

  571. the spiritual gifts that flow that flow

  572. and function in the body. And so it is

  573. inseparable. So without love your gift

  574. becomes noise. Without love your

  575. ministry becomes performance. Without

  576. love the church loses its witness.

  577. So I make a declaration today over you.

  578. You are not an accident.

  579. You are not an observer.

  580. You are not on your own. You are part of

  581. a body. You are placed in a family and

  582. you are called to function and you are

  583. designed to contribute.

  584. The church is God's plan for the world.

  585. You need to accept that and you're part

  586. of that plan.

  587. So in conclusion,

  588. stop visiting the family,

  589. start living in the family, start

  590. embracing the family, start loving the

  591. family,

  592. stop attending the body,

  593. function in the body, fulfill your

  594. purpose

  595. in the body. Because when every member

  596. takes their place, the body grows,

  597. the church strengthens,

  598. and Christ is revealed to the world.

  599. We are a representation of Jesus

  600. and we come together

  601. to enforce the kingdom rule of heaven on
