  1. I got it. The way you laugh tell

  2. me not so.

  3. I was preaching several years ago in another

  4. church in Portland. I brought this up and

  5. wanted the brother in the back. That's alright,

  6. brother. We'll leave at noon and we'll come

  7. back at dinner time and here to do

  8. the rest of the sermon. So they can

  9. sneak out. They know I can't hear them.

  10. Right? But to Rob, correct. We were living

  11. together. Matter of fact, I need to thank

  12. him for 1 year we're taking Greek one.

  13. I'm having a hard time with English, let

  14. alone Greek.

  15. And we had 6 guys in the house

  16. living together, all going to Bible College. And

  17. about halfway, because it's a whole year program

  18. for Greek one, I was struggling.

  19. And so, I told the rest of the

  20. guy, I said, I'm out.

  21. I couldn't have it was just too much.

  22. And Rob and doctor Kennedy

  23. and Neil Fleet would have said, no.

  24. So together, we studied together and helped me

  25. survive the second half.

  26. Without them, I could not make it. Matter

  27. of fact,

  28. several of those guys were dating till I

  29. called the girl, don't call us on Monday

  30. because we're setting green, we're busy.

  31. And Tuesday, don't call us on Tuesday because

  32. that's when the class is because don't bother

  33. to call us on Tuesday because we're grumpy

  34. after that.

  35. But thank Rob for allowing me to survive

  36. Greek 1 and went on to Greek 2.

  37. I like to read a lot of books,

  38. and I kind of calculate

  39. probably between 4 or 5000 book after high

  40. school. I just read 2 or 3 book

  41. a week, and I just love reading history

  42. and stuff,

  43. and biblical stuff,

  44. and novels, and

  45. like to hear about the the war, and

  46. especially the the president,

  47. the history, the biography. And one of them

  48. is

  49. Dwight Eisenhower.

  50. That guy is fascinating. When you look at

  51. his life in the world war 2, he's

  52. a great hero. And then he went on

  53. to be a president

  54. twice. Can you imagine

  55. that you think that his life is flourishing?

  56. I mean, look at it. I bet if

  57. you look in his graph, his library, he

  58. had ton of letter that appreciate him. Lots

  59. of article and video. I mean, he has

  60. so many writing that just really

  61. encourage him. You know, kind of like we

  62. get the kudos note. It just make us

  63. feel great when somebody encouraged. Well, he had

  64. so much,

  65. but here's what's interesting.

  66. After he

  67. finished his term as the president,

  68. he began melancholy or depressed.

  69. Why? Here's what's interesting.

  70. They stopped writing about him.

  71. Even though they had grads, had libraries loaded

  72. with tons of letters that honor him.

  73. The point is,

  74. you'll never be satisfied if you search the

  75. world

  76. hunger.

  77. And maybe, you're after that, I want that

  78. one more praise, and then I'll be satisfied.

  79. No, you won't. You look at Eisenhower's ton

  80. of material that he got.

  81. They're satisfied.

  82. I grew up in the Wawawaw County in

  83. Washington, and I remember in Washington, during the

  84. middle of 'seventy, they

  85. launched the lotto gambling.

  86. And the very first person that won it's

  87. in Walla Walla, I live in a little

  88. town called Wayford, about a 1,000, in a

  89. small country farm community,

  90. and we found out a couple in Walla

  91. Walla won the first $1,000,000.

  92. They were doing fine, they had a regular

  93. job.

  94. Well, 3 years later, they report and ask

  95. them, How are you doing? They said,

  96. Terrible.

  97. We wish we never had that $1,000,000.

  98. You got people coming out of Woodwood claiming

  99. their relative.

  100. Right?

  101. And everywhere he'd go out to dinner, and

  102. say, well, you got a $1,000,000, you can

  103. pay for the whole family. I mean, it

  104. was just miserable, and he wished he never

  105. had that. As a matter of fact, when

  106. you study, multitude of people who win a

  107. lot of money, really, a curse, not a

  108. blessing.

  109. Maybe you heard a couple of months ago,

  110. in Portland, somebody won over 1

  111. $1,000,000,000

  112. I'm going to tell you right now, they

  113. may think they're blessed,

  114. they may think they are going to be

  115. satisfied, I think there can be a lot

  116. of headache in that situation.

  117. Same thing with

  118. trophy.

  119. I joined Toastmaster for many years, and I

  120. knew when I got in Bible College, and

  121. and I'm going to start speaking, I thought,

  122. okay, I need to develop my speaking,

  123. and I want a lot of Toastmaster

  124. speech content.

  125. So much so that I can fill up

  126. the whole wall. Well, I got rid of

  127. all that stuff, I only keep a couple

  128. because they won't satisfy. It's nice to have,

  129. but going after all the trophy

  130. will not satisfy you. Tom Braly won, what,

  131. 7 Super Bowl?

  132. And he said, this is all? That's it?

  133. Even the 7 rings, it still did not

  134. satisfy him.

  135. And so you look at all the situation.

  136. It doesn't matter what kind of car you

  137. got. It doesn't matter what kind of clothes

  138. you got. It doesn't matter who you hang

  139. out. Whatever you go after,

  140. you will not be satisfied.

  141. But

  142. how can we be satisfied?

  143. Well, I'm glad you asked.

  144. Let's walk through Matthew, chapter 5. This is

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  145. from the new,

  146. simple, international.

  147. One day,

  148. he saw the crowd

  149. gathering. So Jesus went outside on a mountain

  150. and sat down.

  151. His disciple gathered around and he began to

  152. teach them.

  153. God blessed those who are poor, for they

  154. reckon they need him,

  155. for the kingdom of God is there.

  156. God bless those who are

  157. mournful, for they will be comfort.

  158. God bless those who are humble, for they

  159. will inherit the whole earth.

  160. God bless those who are hunger and thirst

  161. for justice, for they will be

  162. God bless those who are full and merciful

  163. that they will be shown mercy.

  164. God bless those whose

  165. heart

  166. is pure, for they will see God.

  167. God bless those who work for peace, for

  168. they will be called children of God.

  169. God blesses those who are persecuted for doing

  170. what's right,

  171. for there the kingdom of God is there.

  172. God blessed those who were persecuted for doing

  173. right.

  174. We went that road, didn't we?

  175. God blessed those when people curse you,

  176. mock you, persecute you,

  177. say all kind of evil things against you

  178. because you are my disciple.

  179. Be

  180. happy about it.

  181. Be very

  182. glad.

  183. Why?

  184. Because a great

  185. reward awaits for you in heaven.

  186. And remember,

  187. the ancient prophets were persecuted

  188. the same way.

  189. So, the key ingredient is to search and

  190. find God. Now, some translations,

  191. this one it said,

  192. justification, but this one is talking about

  193. righteousness.

  194. I looked up on Google to find out,

  195. what is American

  196. hunger and thirst for? So the number one

  197. food that we desire, anyone want to take

  198. a guess, what do you think the number

  199. one American food is?

  200. Hamburger.

  201. And number 2, cheeseburger. I thought pizza would

  202. be up there. I'm right.

  203. And number 4 was grilled cheese sandwich.

  204. I think pizza is somewhere down below. I

  205. would put pizza right on top. Right?

  206. Now, thirst, what do you think the number

  207. now, you guys should get this right. The

  208. number 1 thirst that we

  209. like to drink is what? Water.

  210. Water.

  211. Come on, water. Yeah. And coffee is number

  212. 2.

  213. And I was wrong on number 3, it's

  214. tea, and soda finally came up with number

  215. 4.

  216. While I was preaching

  217. and unable to watch him on the Internet,

  218. you know, I'm one of those guys that

  219. listen to about 1 or 2 1000 sermons

  220. a year, till I get some idea.

  221. And Rob has done such a great job

  222. that I plan to,

  223. I wouldn't use the word seal his sermon,

  224. but here, how I get away with it,

  225. I'm not going to seal his sermon, I

  226. like to, you know, take this and this

  227. and this. We call that research.

  228. So I get away. So he has some

  229. good stuff, so I'm going to repeat it

  230. elsewhere, so if he'd allow me to do

  231. that. But he talked about in his first

  232. sermon about a treasure. So, oh, I brought

  233. my own treasure to kind of go along

  234. with Rob talking about. This is one of

  235. my treasure, and you're curious, what in the

  236. world is your treasure?

  237. Well,

  238. potato chip.

  239. It is my treasure. It is indeed. Now

  240. matter of fact, some of you have been

  241. around long enough where they had a commercial.

  242. I don't know what they still do, but

  243. they said, you can't just eat 1. You

  244. can't remember that?

  245. So I'm gonna do something I've never done

  246. before, folks.

  247. I'm gonna try just eat one.

  248. Okay?

  249. No, you can't have it.

  250. Now, that's satisfactory.

  251. So my goal is to see if I

  252. can go the rest of the ceremony without

  253. taking one more.

  254. Can I do it?

  255. Question.

  256. Raise your right hand if you're like me

  257. addicted to potato chip. I'm just just curious.

  258. Raise your left hand and you're not, you

  259. don't care for potato chip.

  260. Final question.

  261. Raise both hand, you just realized you raised

  262. before a blind guy.

  263. That's what I thought.

  264. We'll get back to that potato a little

  265. later.

  266. So

  267. where do we go to get satisfied? Could

  268. I mention all the other stuff? Driving a

  269. brand new car, don't get in, having a

  270. new clothes and trophy. Now, all that stuff

  271. is not wrong, people.

  272. Making money is not wrong. Because the scripture

  273. said it's not the money that's wrong, it's

  274. the love of the money. Okay? So everything

  275. I share or eating potato chips is not

  276. wrong.

  277. Not in my book.

  278. Many years ago, I decided I did something

  279. that I heard a friend did what they

  280. call the

  281. Daniel 10 day diet, that it's just strictly

  282. vegetable and water.

  283. I did it because we heard another friend

  284. who

  285. did that before he got married and got

  286. sick of the dog. I go, Come on.

  287. Really? So my wife got all that stuff

  288. and they did it for 10 days.

  289. Here's what the weird part is. After the

  290. last day, which would end right after church,

  291. guess what food that I would crave it?

  292. Yeah. I would tell Nan about this, and

  293. she'd guess it, and she'd know why I

  294. crave for the potato chip?

  295. Because after 10 days, I would crave for

  296. my body's salt.

  297. Yeah.

  298. And Cindy was laughing because right after church,

  299. I'm out of here. Where are you going?

  300. Never mind. I gotta go. Where are you

  301. going? Going into the car and over. I

  302. grabbed a bag a big bag, and I

  303. ate the whole thing.

  304. It was great.

  305. My wife said, you're a fool.

  306. I was happy. It took me 10 days

  307. to get there.

  308. Yeah.

  309. But that still doesn't satisfy satisfy me. Right?

  310. So the scripture said, those who hunger and

  311. thirst now we're talking about real hunger, like

  312. me for 10 days. That hunger just got

  313. stronger and stronger every day.

  314. And the thirst is a real strong thirst.

  315. That's what the scripture is talking about. So

  316. what is it? So if you look into

  317. your note, one of the first things that

  318. help us to really be satisfied,

  319. number 1, we're satisfied by

  320. church attendant.

  321. Okay?

  322. I'm going to say something that might

  323. offend some of you.

  324. Since COVID hit, they shut down the building,

  325. and, man, what should we do? So we

  326. got this internet set up, so we can

  327. keep preaching, and Zoom, great idea.

  328. The problem is,

  329. we've got people so comfortable staying home, they

  330. don't come to church.

  331. Okay?

  332. You, online,

  333. if you can't come, I understand,

  334. but you are able,

  335. you need to come.

  336. Watching

  337. from the dead end is like watching the

  338. fireplace on a video, and there's no warrant.

  339. Okay?

  340. Well, you're not going to be satisfied, so

  341. I really challenge all of you who are

  342. behind there. And, you know, it's so easy

  343. to be a p j and drink your

  344. I don't drink coffee, but you guys drink

  345. coffee.

  346. And just enjoy. And just but if you

  347. can't, it's a great idea. But I encourage

  348. all of you, because the fellowship is great.

  349. And sometimes, we only go, oh, we'll just

  350. go once and 1. No. Go every Sunday

  351. because that's where you really get satisfied.

  352. So I encourage you to do that because

  353. Hebrew 1025 said, do not what? Direct

  354. the assembly, the worship. Don't do that.

  355. The second way they help you to get

  356. that satisfactory, I mean, do you want your

  357. life to really flourish?

  358. It's

  359. start going to a small group during the

  360. week, or have 1 on 1 discipleship.

  361. I was converted back in 1983. It was

  362. my brother, Nick.

  363. I was just 22, and I was going

  364. to art school,

  365. and I was just hungry, and the one

  366. other thing I love

  367. is to do some study.

  368. This is the one I picked up in

  369. the track. And a lot of this stuff

  370. is here in the back if you got

  371. a lot of track. I was, just learning

  372. what they can. This one said, 52 simulated

  373. Bible study. Basically,

  374. one study a week. Forget it. I got

  375. this thing done in 30 days.

  376. Could I I did not know the Bible.

  377. And then, later, the summer, because I would

  378. go to the art school, but I want

  379. to stay for the summer, trying to graduate

  380. back in 'eighty 4. If I take some

  381. more classes, I'll graduate in 'eighty 5, to

  382. be an artist.

  383. And then, I decided to have not 1,

  384. not 2, but 3, 1 on 1

  385. bible study with another person, just type of

  386. channel.

  387. Dave Adam, who was one of them, who

  388. just graduated bible college, and I'd go there

  389. once a week with him, and I remember

  390. when Rich Carper, who was a preacher, came

  391. in to Spokane, I'd spend time with him,

  392. and Patrick Gilbert,

  393. who teach a whole bunch of 1 on

  394. 1 with a single, and I was single

  395. at the time. I love it. So I

  396. encourage you to get into a small group

  397. or find someone to disciple and to study,

  398. because there's so much in there, because in

  399. this scripture, it helped you to conquer some

  400. of the crazy things going on in the

  401. world.

  402. And if you focus on God, it allows

  403. you to

  404. flourish.

  405. The third thing is that you want to

  406. do with your bible study

  407. and prayer.

  408. I found a statistic just a year ago.

  409. It's bad

  410. that only 3 to 5 percent

  411. of the people at church

  412. Sunday Bible and pray every day.

  413. Let me put that into perspective. If there's

  414. a 100 of you, only 5 of you

  415. are doing it every

  416. day. If there are 200, only 10.

  417. So I encourage you to stick with it

  418. because in Psalm

  419. 1, it talked about if you're

  420. a tree planted by the water,

  421. you're going to flourish and grow, and we

  422. can do that.

  423. My phone went off, and I want to

  424. share you something that my brother shared with

  425. me, that this is a cool tool,

  426. and the guy who'd connect the word like,

  427. he'd regret it. Do you realize how many

  428. teenagers

  429. stride

  430. the button? If they don't get 20 likes,

  431. then life is miserable for that day?

  432. Not

  433. satisfied.

  434. And they're told,

  435. well, the phone can be a curse if

  436. they're searching for because they desire for

  437. being noted,

  438. the desire for somebody to care about me,

  439. and God does. Now, in my hand is

  440. a flyer I hope I got it up

  441. right. It's North West College Bible, where Rob

  442. and I went. Now, we're doing everything online,

  443. so we got some more back there, and

  444. I encourage you to pick this up, Take

  445. the class. You can do it at home.

  446. You can do it for free, or you

  447. can audit for $15 and work your way

  448. under lots of subjects. So every year, we

  449. change it for subject. Right now, I'm recruiting

  450. people to take the Bible College Classic because,

  451. sometimes, I help teach, and

  452. I'm trying to recruit your preacher to be

  453. one of the teacher.

  454. I even corner Larry to do it, I'm

  455. too old, I don't know anything about Zoom.

  456. Hire somebody.

  457. No excuse.

  458. That guy can teach, so let's put this

  459. on here so other people can benefit from

  460. Larry and Rob. So I'm twisting their arm

  461. a little bit. Okay? Rob, then we'll talk

  462. about it. Yes.

  463. I said, no, we're going to sign the

  464. dotted line and get your arm.

  465. When you're my side, you can get away

  466. with that stuff. Right?

  467. The final thing you want to do that

  468. helped you to be satisfied

  469. is be involved

  470. in the ministry.

  471. Start serving.

  472. In first

  473. Corinthian 10:31, it said, whatever you do, do

  474. it all for the glory of God.

  475. Not everyone is called to be a preacher,

  476. or worship,

  477. but there are so many different

  478. ministries,

  479. and the goal here, guys,

  480. is

  481. whatever calling that you're in, give it all.

  482. I've seen too many preachers wait until their

  483. last night to do their sermon, and when

  484. you guys come here, you know this.

  485. Yeah.

  486. And if you're teaching Sunday School, then you've

  487. been an adequate time. Then, no matter what

  488. you

  489. do, give it all.

  490. And when you do that, oh, that's satisfactory.

  491. It's just

  492. such rewarding

  493. and so great. Now,

  494. Paul,

  495. in the Philippians, said,

  496. rejoice again, I say rejoice, regardless of your

  497. circumstances. Now, let me show you something.

  498. When Paul said this,

  499. you know what he was in?

  500. He was chained, he was in jail,

  501. and yet he said,

  502. rejoice. Again, I say rejoice. Now, Rob talked

  503. about that. The joy is not about circumstances,

  504. it's about seeing the big picture. The joy

  505. did not come regardless of the good or

  506. bad because of what we have in Christ.

  507. And so what's so good about Paul writing

  508. this letter? See, he also wrote Roman 828,

  509. which I first became a Christian. Didn't I

  510. like that verse?

  511. You know what it said? It said, God

  512. causes all. Now, now I took Greek so

  513. I can qualify the state. The word awe

  514. mean

  515. can you guess it?

  516. Awe.

  517. Is that hard or what? I got that

  518. one. Woo hoo.

  519. But then you look on, it says, god

  520. caused all things to work out for what?

  521. Yes. Is that true?

  522. Yes. Sometimes, we challenge that because those who

  523. are called according to His purpose, they love

  524. Him, and and so I was challenged by

  525. that because once I came out of the

  526. water to the grave

  527. you see, at age 16,

  528. I were told from the doctor that I'm

  529. going

  530. blind. At 8:16, I had 40% hearing loss.

  531. So I'm wearing hearing aid and I'm alluding

  532. Now, the vision is fine. They told me

  533. at 8:30, I'm going to go totally blind.

  534. I have 3 brothers.

  535. All 4 of us are going to be

  536. blind and deaf.

  537. And so, here I am at 8:22,

  538. with the tunnel vision, started working way down,

  539. and I'm supposed to understand, okay, God, how

  540. are you going to cause this

  541. to work out for the glory?

  542. Well, if you look at Paul, because of

  543. his chain,

  544. you and I are blessed to read some

  545. of his letter.

  546. Aren't you glad that he was under this

  547. circumstance? Because that situation, God cut it all

  548. good that you and I, 2000 years later,

  549. can benefit and reap the benefit from what

  550. Paul wrote to us, to encourage us to

  551. live our life, to make our life flourish

  552. because of his word.

  553. If it wasn't for this, we would not

  554. have it.

  555. So here's the question that I have to

  556. ask God.

  557. You see,

  558. at age 15,

  559. until I was

  560. 22, I was driving truck.

  561. For real.

  562. A truck, p truck,

  563. bean truck. And later, I drove a county

  564. truck, Caring Rock. I love what I'm doing

  565. and and later, I learned how to use

  566. the backhoe. I had so much fun doing

  567. the backhoe.

  568. I would have so much fun, the guy

  569. took the key away, he could've worked right

  570. through the brake. No, no, no, no, no.

  571. It didn't matter. Let me play with my

  572. toy.

  573. Government job don't do that. Uh-uh.

  574. But god took that away because my eyesight

  575. got worse,

  576. and I thought, okay. Now what? Now,

  577. if my eyesight was fine, I could be

  578. content staying in that hometown and have a

  579. lifetime job, and get to play with all

  580. the equipment, the toy, and work my way

  581. up, but he closed that door.

  582. What's good out of that? Well, it allowed

  583. me to go to Spokane because I was

  584. looking for a church, and I went to

  585. art school. Now you might say, woah. Wait.

  586. Wait. Why do you wanna go to art

  587. school? You knew you're gonna go

  588. blind. Well, here's why I decided to go

  589. to it. It's my compassion. It's what I

  590. love to do. And besides, doctor's not God,

  591. they're just guessing.

  592. And maybe my eyesight will come back or

  593. maybe they might have something to heal or

  594. maybe it won't be 30.

  595. When I graduated from art school,

  596. I was blessed.

  597. Yes. He's back here.

  598. Yes. Get the job that I get to

  599. do.

  600. Anybody recognize this?

  601. View Master. I was a graphic artist for

  602. a View Master company. See, my wife said

  603. I go to work to play.

  604. K. I get to paint, and that's what

  605. I did for a while. And I get

  606. the chance to do that for almost 16

  607. years because I didn't go totally blind till

  608. about 20 years ago, about 2,003,

  609. 2,004.

  610. Then, when I came down to go through

  611. work,

  612. I had 5 years of school, and then,

  613. all of a sudden, when I came down

  614. here, the NCB invited me to check out

  615. the school. People said, Oh, you should go

  616. to Bible College. I said, No. Because I

  617. had 5 years to call. I I want

  618. to work. I still want to grow,

  619. but I don't wanna go to bible college.

  620. Now the job I took at the VMAs

  621. is freelance, so I'm allowed to come and

  622. go. And finally, we had a guy, a

  623. bible director, came to our church and said,

  624. you need to go. I thought, like, God

  625. was tugging my heart. Yeah. I was arguing

  626. with him. Kinda like Moses.

  627. Go. I was Moses. God, I'm going blind.

  628. I'm deaf. I can't speak. You want a

  629. guy like Rob, not me.

  630. Grab the Hawaiian kid. Leave me alone.

  631. He would not leave me alone.

  632. Leave me alone. I said, oh my god.

  633. I'll grow up but only 1 year, and

  634. I'm not going to be a preacher.

  635. You see, you gotta understand, when I was

  636. in high school, I was terrified of public

  637. speaking. There's no way you can get me

  638. up front.

  639. You got the wrong man.

  640. Well,

  641. 6 years later,

  642. graduate 91,

  643. I'm preaching.

  644. Before that, I was in Bible college for

  645. 3 years, and they didn't do any sermon,

  646. and I'd never gone to the camp, and

  647. I got a call from people, hey, man,

  648. when you want to come and speak. Now,

  649. just before that,

  650. I got a chance to do my very

  651. first sermon.

  652. It was a small country church somewhere in

  653. Oregon, so I said, okay. And I did

  654. my sermon. I went to the elder, hadn't

  655. looked at it because, you know, I've never

  656. done this before. I've been training. I've been

  657. going Toastmaster, and I've been learning all this

  658. stuff. And I wanna make sure it looked

  659. good. He did. And so my friend and

  660. I went down to the church, and they're

  661. small congregation. The first two point, they were

  662. falling asleep.

  663. Lord, I told you I shouldn't be a

  664. preacher.

  665. Look at them. They're sleeping.

  666. Man, point 3.

  667. Point 3, I talk about me going blind.

  668. It woke him up, and I shared with

  669. him, no matter

  670. what happened, God still can use a blind

  671. guy and a deaf guy.

  672. They took me out for lunch before I

  673. came home, and I wanted to open them

  674. and said, you

  675. know,

  676. if you did your whole sermon based on

  677. 0.3, I think you got a dynamic sermon,

  678. young man.

  679. I took note.

  680. And a week later, they asked me to

  681. come and speak at the

  682. camp, the fireside, and guess what subject I

  683. decided to talk about.

  684. My story.

  685. And when I did my story, right after

  686. the Bible director, Myron Welch, said, you need

  687. to take this down the road. I go,

  688. b b b b b b b what?

  689. I went there to sermon people, and he

  690. want me to go on the road.

  691. I know nothing about this.

  692. Go.

  693. So I'm thinking, on the road again.

  694. Yeah, I'm the country man.

  695. So I went to the preacher in Vancouver,

  696. and then Charles Daly did a lot of

  697. traveling. He got me set up, and we

  698. got to church in Gretchen. I did my

  699. first presentation, and I've been on it ever

  700. since, since 1980. I started out called Handy

  701. Capable Ministry. My wife said, you need to

  702. change that title. So now we call it

  703. living on a blind side ministry.

  704. Isn't that cool?

  705. Because I'm not at churches, but I'm at

  706. camps, and school, and then club. Matter of

  707. fact, one of the reasons why I'm here

  708. is I'm going to camp right afterward.

  709. Why?

  710. A year ago, when my friend named Christie

  711. Johnson called, and she said, Matt,

  712. Camp Grove needs your help. They're short on

  713. male counselor.

  714. But what date? Well, the last week of

  715. June.

  716. Who rents the car? Nan.

  717. So I went to my wife. Did that

  718. date open? Yeah. What do you think? Well,

  719. I think you should go for it, honey.

  720. Okay.

  721. I'm already committed going to camp in Washington,

  722. and, you know, that's later in August. So

  723. I called in, and I explained who I

  724. was,

  725. my background, and said, I'll take you. And

  726. I said, I have one more question

  727. before I committed.

  728. I said, I'm totally blind. Are you okay

  729. with that?

  730. You know what she said?

  731. No way.

  732. We can't allow blind men on a campground

  733. to mold down our tree.

  734. You know that's not what it says. She

  735. said absolutely. Come she had no idea what

  736. she's getting into.

  737. So I went, and here's what's interesting. When

  738. I got there on Sunday afternoon, the only

  739. person who knew me, Doug, he's the 1st

  740. hillbilly Christian that I met 40 years ago.

  741. Great guy. You guys probably know Doug. And

  742. we've been and he's the only one I

  743. know. Everybody else is all brand new, and

  744. they saw me at the white cane, and

  745. I know what's going on. They're going,

  746. is he gonna be okay?

  747. I mean, they're concerned. I'm probably the first

  748. blind

  749. commissioner or counselor on that premise.

  750. After one day, it's, oh, no. He's fine.

  751. See, my goal, not only to teach the

  752. word of God and encourage people, is to

  753. go through the whole week without hugging a

  754. tree. That's a good week for me.

  755. You guys ever hug a tree, they're rough,

  756. and they're set for the

  757. board?

  758. We discussed that Nan and I did met

  759. 33 years ago, and they're at a camp

  760. called Tapowingo,

  761. and I did something to call,

  762. well, not a prank, but I call it

  763. tall tale.

  764. I'll have Nan and Rob. Rob, remember

  765. JB's missing?

  766. Yeah.

  767. Made Nangirl cry, but let her explain that.

  768. So it was fun. I I find a

  769. way to get in trouble when I go

  770. at camp.

  771. But I'm back here, and I loved spending

  772. time, because a lot of these kids never

  773. see blind people before.

  774. And so, God allowed me to be in

  775. camp, and then, I graduated,

  776. and also, a couple later, become a certified

  777. behavior consultant. You see what God's doing? He

  778. took away the job I love to drive

  779. and then he opened this door doing the

  780. other thing God called what's good for me.

  781. And not only that, in 91,

  782. I was a drama director.

  783. Some of you guys know Norman Fox? Yes.

  784. I was part of his dad production in

  785. Spokane in Portland. I was in that drama

  786. production.

  787. Love it. And in 91, I became a

  788. drama director, and where I produced

  789. production for kids and adults, Easter and Christmas.

  790. I loved that.

  791. We know that God causes all things to

  792. turn out for good. Even though I'm blind

  793. and hearing impaired,

  794. look what God did with me.

  795. I tried to say no, and then, Look

  796. where I got. Do I miss driving? A

  797. little bit.

  798. I mean, I still think I can drive,

  799. but nobody will give me a car key.

  800. Can you believe that?

  801. I'm still working. Kenneth Kelly's here, I met

  802. him yesterday, he said, You can take my

  803. truck. Yes!

  804. But I'm still waiting for the keys.

  805. And not only that,

  806. in 2,030,004,

  807. I went totally blind, and I had a

  808. crossroad.

  809. See, my hearing loss went 40% to 85.

  810. I only have 15%

  811. of hearing loss.

  812. Thank God for a powerful hearing aid I

  813. can hear. My wife still snored once

  814. in a while. But if I take my

  815. hearing aid out, I can't hear anything, I

  816. love it!

  817. She hears everything.

  818. But the crossroad is, Can I still teach

  819. Sunday School?

  820. Can I still

  821. preach?

  822. Can I still do drama? Can I still

  823. come into camp?

  824. I didn't know, and guess what?

  825. Yes! I'm still doing all that.

  826. God's still using me.

  827. Me. Now, I've got one more thing that

  828. God allowed me to do, and this one,

  829. you guys are going to have a hard

  830. time believing, so I'm going to need some

  831. help.

  832. Michaela Brooks, are you in the house?

  833. Is she here today?

  834. Nan?

  835. You see Michaela?

  836. She's not here. Okay.

  837. But I'm gonna get her later.

  838. What You're not gonna believe that God gave

  839. me a special thing. I'm using that to

  840. give, you know, and whatever talent God just

  841. used for God's glory, in one area

  842. that I do at home,

  843. when I'm not preaching or working or doing

  844. chores around there, I run my own

  845. Are you ready?

  846. Table stall.

  847. Yeah, I still have all my finger.

  848. Oh, there they are.

  849. But because you guys have a hard time

  850. believing that I run the table saw, I

  851. had the guy run the slide and go

  852. ahead and run it. And these are some

  853. of the samples that I made

  854. through the table saw.

  855. Are you seeing some of them?

  856. And one of my favorite projects when the

  857. COVID

  858. 2020 hit, I made a 9 foot tall

  859. T Rack. You probably see me standing by

  860. it, and I made a whole bunch. Now

  861. the reason why I'm picking on Mikaela,

  862. could I talk to

  863. the husband,

  864. Jace? He was at camp last month, and

  865. he shared with me that

  866. a little bit of background of her wife

  867. she liked to sing. I go, Well, what

  868. other things that she liked? Did she like

  869. dogs and cats? Did you know she collected

  870. bugs?

  871. I go, really?

  872. So I thought, well, I want to make

  873. something for her.

  874. Is she here? I'm here. Come on forward.

  875. Is Maketa here? I'm here. Stand right here,

  876. please. Okay.

  877. I just got here.

  878. Good.

  879. And you bring your husband too? I did.

  880. He's Okay. Now I don't know if you

  881. saw, but I explained to people that

  882. that do table saw. Now, I talked to

  883. your husband. He he he shares something that

  884. you like to do.

  885. You like click bug. Why? I like

  886. How long?

  887. Since I was really little.

  888. So

  889. because I heard that, I went into my

  890. shop, and I found this. I thought maybe

  891. you can add it to your

  892. bug collection. Okay. Are you ready for it?

  893. I'm ready. Alright. Now I won't bite you.

  894. What do you see? That's so cute. Take

  895. it out and show it to people.

  896. Wow. The caterpillar

  897. is yours. Thank you for talking to the

  898. thing. Yeah. All yours.

  899. When I had a talk with her husband,

  900. and before I got home, this image, it's

  901. in my head, like, Cool. So when I

  902. got it all done, see, nothing to leave

  903. and shop till my wife said, yeah.

  904. Yeah. There a couple

  905. 2 months ago, on perfect, I made one

  906. that looked like an ugly pig head, on

  907. perfect, with a horn and eye bug. I

  908. mean, it's just ugly can get brought in,

  909. and my daughter said,

  910. burn it.

  911. But I did.

  912. But when she saw the bug critter, they

  913. said, Oh, this is great. So I hope

  914. Makeda

  915. enjoyed that. I loved that. Let me close

  916. with

  917. a question and a story.

  918. Are you

  919. hungering and thirst for God?

  920. How'd that work in your life?

  921. Are you?

  922. A couple,

  923. mom and dad, are frustrated

  924. because Joey came home for the second time,

  925. they had a report card, all

  926. f's.

  927. They did everything. They took away his phone,

  928. they took away the toy, they took away

  929. the free time, they gave him more chores,

  930. I mean, they did everything, but to kill

  931. him, try to get the grade, what shall

  932. we do? They were at their end. We

  933. don't know.

  934. So,

  935. they decided to take him to the summer

  936. school, the Catholic school. So they took him

  937. on and dropped him off

  938. and see any improvement.

  939. At the end of the summer, they came

  940. back and picked him up, and the teacher

  941. said, your son was terrific.

  942. All age.

  943. What?

  944. Yeah. And he said, this is the first

  945. time in our history that we have any

  946. kid that come in with all f end

  947. up from being all a's.

  948. And then dad go,

  949. mhmm, grabbed his son, then went to the

  950. hallway, and said, what did they do to

  951. you?

  952. And Joey said, Nothing, dad.

  953. You see, when you drop me off and

  954. I walk into the hallway and looked up,

  955. they had a man nailed to the cross.

  956. So I knew they knew business.

  957. Is that what it's gonna take to motivate

  958. you guys?

  959. I hope not.

  960. God loves you. That's why you die. He

  961. wants you guys to be satisfied. You are

  962. not going to be satisfied in the world

  963. itself. See,

  964. the world tells me

  965. that I'm blind and deaf,

  966. you won't have good life, you won't flourish.

  967. I mean, Proverbs 21/21,

  968. it said, Those who pursue, that's another word

  969. for hunger, for thirst and rights,

  970. after righteousness

  971. and love,

  972. you will find

  973. life,

  974. prosperity,

  975. and honor.

  976. Folks, I don't worry about being blind. See,

  977. as I mentioned last month at the camp,

  978. my blindness

  979. and my deafness did not define me.

  980. Okay?

  981. God defined me as a chosen god.

  982. I don't look for

  983. extra help in the world because they're gonna

  984. pull me. The Bible encourages me every time

  985. I read. He tells me, oh, yeah. There's

  986. some stuff that's tough.

  987. I mean, do I have to forgive that

  988. guy that kicked my dog? I want to

  989. kill his cat.

  990. No. You've got to learn to love other

  991. people. Could God teach you? Because he made

  992. it, he wanted to

  993. be satisfying. It's only going to happen if

  994. you find it through God.

  995. If you're not a Christian

  996. and

  997. you finally realize you're no matter what you

  998. try,

  999. you're not satisfied.

1000. Come to Christ. All you need to believe

1001. that Jesus is the Lord,

1002. and then you need to repent, and then

1003. you need to do a u-turn and follow

  1004. his way,

  1005. and then

1006. you need to confess to Jesus' Lord, and

1007. then you need to quit driving and let

  1008. the Lord drive,

1009. or you could let me drive and see

  1010. how far we get.

1011. It's better that Jesus drives and guides you.

1012. And then, we talked about in the community,

1013. that you need to be baptized so you

1014. can come out of the water grave, they

1015. take away all of your sin from the

  1016. day you're born to

1017. born again, and you got the Holy Spirit

1018. to help you to grow. You see, guys,

  1019. it's all about attitude.

1020. This morning, you woke up two way. Either

1021. you say, Good morning, Lord!

1022. Or, Good Lord, it's morning.

1023. How did you wake up this morning?

1024. I don't get up every morning and say,

1025. man, I'm blind again. Where'd that wall come

  1026. from?

1027. If you look closely, I've got so many

1028. scars, I don't think Peter is going to

1029. recognize me when I showed

  1030. up. But I don't. I'm so busy doing

1031. woodworking, honoring and blessing people, doing Bible study,

  1032. going to camp,

1033. and just enjoying life. And, see, I did

1034. a sermon many years ago called, either circumstance

1035. will make you better or bitter.

1036. I chose to let it make me better.

  1037. I couldn't be bitter.

  1038. If I was, I wouldn't be here.

1039. So I hope you hunger and thirst.

1040. Now, before Rod come up, I got an

  1041. issue here.

  1042. Yeah.

1043. My question is, what should I do with

  1044. this?

1045. You thought I forgot it, didn't you?

1046. Some of you didn't even pay attention to

1047. my sermon, you were eyeballing that thing.

  1048. Oh, yes.

  1049. Who give me $2? There, $2, $4, $4,

  1050. $4, $4 back there, $6 over there laying

  1051. the red $6. Do I hear 8? 8?

1052. Good. 10. 10 sold. Sold to Rob Kearney.

  1053. Brother, brother Rob.

1054. I'll pay you later, Matt.

1055. I've been checking the mail.

  1056. I

1057. when I think of my my brother, Matt,

1058. I think of the word

  1059. enthusiasm,

  1060. and the word

  1061. enthusiasm,

1062. we'll go back to our Greek,

  1063. Matt, theos, god,

  1064. n within,

  1065. god within.

  1066. Are you enthusiastic

1067. about life no matter what your circumstances are?

1068. My brother is, and I hope you are

1069. too. And if you don't know the enthusiasm

1070. of having God within, then today could be

1071. your day. Our elders are gonna be available

  1072. to pray,

1073. with you if you have questions or

1074. concerns that you'd like them to pray for.

1075. In the back corner, in the left, I

1076. see that, brother Peter Wolf is already there

1077. to pray with you. So we hope that

  1078. today,

  1079. God will bring enthusiasm

1080. for life to you. Let's stand together

1081. as we have our closing song. Following the

1082. closing song, we invite you to come across

1083. to the gym for our welcome in, some

  1084. coffee and refreshments.

1085. Be a time to meet Matt and Cindy,

1086. say hello to them, so we hope you

1087. can stick around for a while. God bless

1088. you this week as you seek the enthusiasm

  1089. of the Lord. Kathy.
