  1. Luke Chapter five today the Old and the New. So

  2. we're still at Levi's house, and we're going to begin

  3. today in verse thirty six, So this is our third

  4. time here.

  5. We're still there.

  6. Levi's feast is still going on, and the Pharisees are there.

  7. The Disciples of John the Baptist are somewhere outside there

  8. inside with Jesus's Levi, the Publicans, and the others. As

  9. Luke puts at the others, the other gospelers tell us

  10. that these are sinners. Who knows what kind of sinners

  11. they are, but they're there. Apparently everybody knows that they're sinners,

  12. maybe even I'm sure they do too. But they're there,

  13. and they're having a feast, and Jesus has gone from

  14. answering them their questions, you know, they ask him two questions.

  15. The first one was, you know, why do you eat

  16. with republican and sinners? And of course the Pharisees are

  17. too ashamed to ask Jesus, so they spoke to the

  18. disciples and Jesus answers, and then they say, why are

  19. you eating? So he can't win? Why are you even eating?

  20. How come you're not fasting? You know?

  21. Okay, So now Jesus goes from answering these questions to

  22. teaching them by way of parable, beginning in thirty six,

  23. and thirty six contains this parable. Jesus told them that

  24. the physician was come to call sinners to repentance, and

  25. that the children of the bridal chamber could not fast

  26. while the bridegroom was with them.

  27. Then he gives them two more.

  28. Parables to illustrate the weakness of their position. And it

  29. says there at the beginning in verse thirty six that

  30. He's spake also a parable unto them. So now we're

  31. going to launch into this parable, this parabolic statement that

  32. Jesus makes about the old.

  33. And the new.

  34. So while don't we read our passage thirty six through

  35. thirty nine, and then will have word of prayer. And

  36. He's spake also a parable under them. No man putteth

  37. the piece of a new garment upon an old. If otherwise,

  38. then both the new maketh a rent, and the peace

  39. that was taken out of the new agreeth not with

  40. the old. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles,

  41. else the new wine will burst the bottles and be spilled,

  42. and the bottles shall perish, but new wine must be

  43. put into new bottles, and both are preserved. No man,

  44. having drunk old wine straightway, desireth new, for he saith

  45. the old is better.

  46. Father.

  47. We thank you for all the better things in this life.

  48. We ask you, Lord, to help us to embrace the

  49. better things. And Lord, not the better things of legalism,

  50. but the better things of grace.

  51. We thank you that.

  52. All the promises that we've heard today from your word,

  53. and we thank you for the benefits that you load

  54. us with. Load us today, Lord, with benefit from this passage,

  55. that you might speak to us, you might shine light

  56. upon us. May your face shine upon us today, Your countenance,

  57. we asked that you would speak to every heart, speak

  58. through me today for our praying Jesus' name. Amen, he

  59. spake a parable unto them. No man putteth a piece

  60. of new garment upon an old. Okay, let's first of all,

  61. we need to define old and new.

  62. What's old?

  63. Well, two garments are mentioned here, so let's just start

  64. with the old garment. The old garment. The Pharisees had

  65. been expressing their desire for conformity to tradition. Don't eat

  66. with sinners, Republicans don't enter the home of a stranger.

  67. That's never said, but I'm sure it's implied in their minds.

  68. It was a.

  69. Tradition of the elders not entering the home of a sinner,

  70. and of course fasting.

  71. Fasting is better than eating and drinking.

  72. These were traditions handed down from generation to generation and

  73. had created fences around the law, which is what they wanted,

  74. But it also had created a system of legalism that

  75. made this list of actions mandated not by law but

  76. by rabbinic tradition. So somewhere at the core of all

  77. of this stuff that they did there was the Law

  78. of Moses, but all of the things that they had

  79. built up around it so that they wouldn't break the

  80. Law of Moses had become tradition, and then from tradition

  81. it had become law in a sense. You weren't allowed

  82. to do some things. If you were going to be

  83. a good jew, you had to behave in a certain way,

  84. dress in a certain way, eat in a certain way,

  85. fast in a certain way.

  86. And all of.

  87. Those things had built up and built up, like you know,

  88. barnacles on the bottom of a ship, until you couldn't

  89. see the bottom of.

  90. The ship anymore, and so that's what's old here.

  91. These legalistic behaviors created a sense of righteousness in those

  92. who practiced them, which legalistic behavior always do.

  93. And Jesus even said they're.

  94. In that very first piece when he's answering about the

  95. publicans and sinners, he said, he said that the they

  96. that are whole need not a physician. They that are

  97. hold need not a physician. So the Pharisees thought that

  98. they were Oki doki, They're fine, not a problem. Yet

  99. the old is frail and weak and apparently has holes

  100. that need to be patched. However, you cannot fill holes

  101. in a legalistic system with anything other than more legalism.

  102. If you put grace in there, it just will not agree.

  103. You'll notice.

  104. He goes on and says, no man putteth a piece

  105. of a new garment upon an old if otherwise than

  106. both the new maketh a rent. So if you try

  107. to fill the whole with something different, you end up

  108. with a tear, because they are incompatible. In this illustration

  109. of the old garment and the new patch, the old

  110. garment is frail, it's friable, and the old cloth of

  111. legalism will be torn by the new and the new

  112. will be ruined by the old.

  113. You notice that Jesus says both there.

  114. If otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, So

  115. both the old garment is torn and the new patch

  116. is torn, that they cannot exist together. The Greek word

  117. here for rent is skizi, from which we get our

  118. word schism. It's a very descriptive word, suggesting the horror

  119. of a tear which cannot be mended. Sometimes we use

  120. it when we talk about organizations splitting. We'll say that

  121. there was a schism within the organization, and when we

  122. use that word, that means it's deep and it is unrepairable.

  123. There was a schism in that church they split, And

  124. so when we say that, we know this is bad

  125. because if there was a schism there, then.

  126. It's not going to be mended.

  127. So Jesus says that both the new maketh a rent,

  128. So the old and the new both are torn. And

  129. then we have the disagreement of the cloth. Notice what

  130. he says there, and the peace that was taken out

  131. on the new. Agree if not with the old, well,

  132. of course not legalism and grace. Never agree, never agree.

  133. If I have to do something for salvation. Then that

  134. is complete contrary to God does all things for my salvation,

  135. completely contrary to it. So legalism and grace never agree.

  136. You cannot put the new into the old and expect

  137. a peaceful outcome or conformity.

  138. This is not gonna happen. There is no.

  139. Syncretization of the old and the new. They do, they

  140. are not compatible the traditions of men. Their conformity to

  141. sin into the license of fleshly desire demands allegiance. They

  142. will demand that Grace do it just like they say it.

  143. Should be done.

  144. And of course God's not going to be a part

  145. of that. Remember what happened to the early Church is

  146. this is all recorded there in Acts chapter fifteen.

  147. Chapter before that. Also the.

  148. Judaizers, although they're not called that in Acts fourteen, the

  149. Pharisees they come down and they begin teaching the disciples

  150. that Paul and Barnabas had preached to that they needed

  151. to keep the law. As a matter of fact, it

  152. says they're in Acts fifteen to one. Certain men came

  153. down from Judea taught the brethren and said, except you

  154. be circumcised after the manner of Moses, you cannot be saved.

  155. Okay.

  156. So here's an example of the Old and the New disagreeing. Okay,

  157. And Paul and Barnabas they stood up to that and

  158. they said, no, you're wrong. This is not the way

  159. it should be. So then they go to the apostles.

  160. They stand before the apostles, and this is the first

  161. church council. They're in Acts chapter fifteen. And then again

  162. we have the certain of the sect of the Pharisees,

  163. which believed. Now these are believers, but they hadn't believed

  164. right because they said that it was needful to circumcise them,

  165. that is, the Disciples, the Greek Disciples, and to command

  166. them to keep the law of Moses. Okay, so they're

  167. sticking with it. So not only circumcision, but keeping the

  168. law of Moses. They're in eleven and twelve of that

  169. fifteenth chapter. Peter pointed out the incompatibility of these two

  170. things because he says this, you know, this is fifteen

  171. Acts fifteen, eleven and twelve. He says, now, therefore, why

  172. tempt ye God to put a yoke upon the neck

  173. of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were

  174. able to bear? And that's the old But we believe

  175. that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we

  176. shall be saved, even.

  177. As they that's the new.

  178. So the old is a yoke that Peter says we

  179. couldn't and our fathers couldn't keep. The new is the

  180. grace of God in Christ Jesus, that God has given

  181. for all men to be saved. Can those two things agree?

  182. So you could never come close to breaking the law.

  183. That was the thing about the tradition. They wanted to

  184. make sure you didn't break the law. But you have

  185. to remember that Jesus kept the law perfectly. But these

  186. same men were mad at him because they didn't keep

  187. their traditions according to their specifications. See Okay, so that's

  188. the old.

  189. What's the new? I've already alluded to it.

  190. Now there are two bottles mentioned here in this next piece.

  191. In verse thirty seven, he.

  192. Says, no man putteth new wine into old bottles, So

  193. like the new patch from a new garment. So here

  194. we have new wine. Jesus has already illustrated the new.

  195. Wine for us.

  196. He's talked about those who are sick. Those are the

  197. ones who need a physician. The sinners that he's come

  198. to call to repentance.

  199. This is new.

  200. The children of the bridal chamber who celebrate the presence

  201. of the bridegroom. This is new, the new patch that

  202. disagrees with the old garment. The old wine skin is

  203. legalistic dependence on works to gain the favor of God,

  204. while the new wine is the grace of God, calling

  205. sinners to repentance who do nothing more or less than

  206. believe on the one who called them, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  207. the bridegroom from just last week. No man putteth new

  208. wine into old bottles, else the new wine will burst

  209. the bottles. Here's the same result. Remember with the patch

  210. and the old garment, there was a schism. It tore unrepairable.

  211. Both the old garment and the patch are ruined. Here

  212. notice the language new wine will burst. Does that give

  213. you a word picture. It's not just that it gets

  214. a little leak.

  215. We've had so much rain.

  216. I have a pot on my back porch, but it

  217. doesn't have a drain hole in it. It's just a

  218. little bitty thin plastic thing and it's full of water.

  219. And I had plants floating, plants floating.

  220. In my pot.

  221. This is still soil in there, but the plants are

  222. floating around. And so I took my pocket knife yesterday

  223. and I drilled a little hole in the bottom because

  224. I figured we're gonna get rain again today, which we are.

  225. Drill a little hole in the bottom, and it though

  226. all the water drained out. Now my plant's not gonna

  227. drown because it's full of water. It'll drain.

  228. That's not this.

  229. That's not a little pinhole in the bottom, so the

  230. pot can drain. This is an explosion. It just goes everywhere.

  231. And if the wine, if the new wine explodes the

  232. old bottle and the new wine goes everywhere. What happens

  233. to the new wine?

  234. It's ruined.

  235. How are you gonna gather it up off the ground.

  236. It's gonna soak in and be gone. You just have

  237. a stain lift, that's all. And the old bottles, what's

  238. gonna happen to them? Are you gonna use them again? All?

  239. They go right in the garbage can. I can't use

  240. it again. There's no repairing that old wine skin. You

  241. cannot put Christianity into man made legalism. Legalism is stiff

  242. and inflexible. It's fragile because most of the time rests

  243. on the dictates of human reason rather than on the

  244. word of God.

  245. Let me tell you a story. The story is.

  246. About a lady named Harriet. Harriet was tired of biblically

  247. centered gospel worship at her church. She wanted something more

  248. exciting that would attract a bigger crowd. She secluded herself

  249. on her parents' farm, living in the barn loft for

  250. several weeks. While she was there, she wrote praise music

  251. based on the teachings of her favorite prosperity gospel prophets,

  252. self help gurus, and Catholic mystics. She claimed to be

  253. in contact with the angelic world while locked away in

  254. the barn. After her retreat, she found a group of

  255. musicians who agreed to play her music and help her

  256. start a new church. Air quotes, she called it a

  257. church for people who don't like church, a retreat for

  258. those who are tired of the strictures of Bible doctrine,

  259. and a place where all lifestyles could be equally celebrated.

  260. A location was soon provided by a wealthy donor and

  261. a temple constructed. The doors opened to huge crowds who

  262. came to hear the professionally produced music listened to the

  263. unique teachings of Harriet, who now called herself an apostle,

  264. and to see the Grand Temple. Actually, they gave tours

  265. of the Grand Temple. So much money had gone into it.

  266. Harriet soon published a book containing all the visions and

  267. teachings that she received.

  268. In the barn.

  269. Everyone who applied for membership at the Grand Temple was

  270. required to read and memorize the vision and the teachings.

  271. Harriet soon established a board of lesser Apostles, whose responsibilities

  272. it was to interpret the visions and expand the teachings

  273. of the Apostle. Harriet Address code was soon established, a

  274. diet giving rules, a special day for worship, mandatory fasting,

  275. and strictures on relationships with non Tempolites. All these good deeds,

  276. as they were called, were ordained by the lesser Apostles

  277. and were implemented by teaching elders to draw the Tempolites

  278. closer to the angelic world.

  279. Does any of this sound familiar?

  280. In the course of time, one of the lesser apostles

  281. heard a gospel sermon, repented of his sin and turned

  282. to Christ. He began asking questions which were not allowed.

  283. Some of the Tempolites began leaving the strictures of the

  284. Grand Temple, embracing the preaching of the c and the

  285. teachings of the Bible. Soon the Grand Temple was empty,

  286. the musicians fled for greener pastures, and Harriet penniless was

  287. living on her parents farm. Why because the legalism of

  288. man made religion never satisfies the true need of men.

  289. The legalism of man made religion never satisfies the true

  290. need of men. Only the grace of God can make

  291. us new. There's a hole, it needs to be patched.

  292. But ladies and gentlemen, the hole's not the problem. The

  293. problem is.

  294. The old garment.

  295. We are dead in trespasses and sins. We are lost

  296. and alone in this world without Christ and without God.

  297. You read the book of Isaiah. Isaiah says it once

  298. twice three times, there is no peace to the wicked

  299. saith my God. And people go on and on about

  300. their life, trying to live with a legalistic mindset that

  301. they could just do some things and will be okay,

  302. and maybe a little Jesus ever down.

  303. It doesn't work. It will be spilled.

  304. As he says, here the wine bottles burst and they

  305. are spilled, and if wine is spilled, it's ruined and unrecoverable.

  306. Harriet's scheme failed because it was incompatible with the message

  307. of grace, and it was it was weak in its

  308. effort to help lost men. The only person that really

  309. helped was Harriet, who became very wealthy because of it.

  310. The bottles perish, So you notice, do you notice the

  311. the verbs here burst, spilled and perish. This is the result.

  312. This is the result when you try to marry gospel

  313. message with legalism, both are destroyed. This deeply, I think

  314. the word parish really deeply illustrates the problem of Christianity

  315. placed in non Christian, frail, strict, human oriented systems. And

  316. then the parable is rescued here because as all these

  317. verbs here at the end bursts, spilled, parish kind of

  318. leave us wanting. But then't notice what Jesus says at.

  319. The very end.

  320. But new wine must be put into new bottles, and

  321. both are preserved. The scriptures are clear as to what

  322. this looks like. Let me just read you a few passages,

  323. some selected portions today Tewo Corinthians, chapter five, verse seventeen.

  324. You probably thought of this one already. Therefore, if any man.

  325. Be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things

  326. are passed away. Behold, all things are become new. You

  327. don't need an old garment, you need a new garment.

  328. Ephesians chapter four, verses twenty two through twenty four. That

  329. you put off concerning the former conversation the old man,

  330. which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be

  331. renewed in the spirit of your mind. And that you

  332. put on the new man, which after God is created

  333. in righteousness and true holiness. Old man, new man, Colossians

  334. chapter three, verses eight through ten.

  335. But now you also put off.

  336. All these anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of

  337. your mouth. Lie not to one another, seeing that you

  338. have put off the old man with his deeds, and

  339. have put on the new man, which is renewed in

  340. knowledge after the image of Him that created him. So

  341. the old, according to Paul in Sewod Corinthians five. In

  342. Ephesians four and clautions three, the old man or the old,

  343. looks like this, dead, corrupt, filled with deceitful lusts, anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy,

  344. filthy speech, and lying. The old looks like this, according

  345. to Paul in these same passages, the new looks like this.

  346. It's living righteous, true holiness, having the knowledge of Christ

  347. and his image.

  348. This is the new.

  349. That's why these do not go together. So what's the problem.

  350. The problem is corrupt desire. No man having drunk old

  351. wine straight desire at the new.

  352. Now, this is unique.

  353. If you look at the parallel passages in Matthew and

  354. in Mark Mark chapter two, Matthew chapter nine. I think

  355. if you look at those parallel passages, this does not

  356. accompany the previous parable of the old garment new garment,

  357. or old garment old wine bottles.

  358. This is unique. This verse is unique in Luke.

  359. No man having drunk old wine straightway desire at the new. See,

  360. the problem is a corrupt desire. Our nature gets in

  361. the way of receiving.

  362. The new wine.

  363. We like having our own way, we say with the

  364. Heartlea of Proverbs. Stolen waters are sweet and bread eating

  365. in secret is pleasant. We're used to the old way.

  366. We like the corrupt desires. It feeds our flesh and

  367. makes us feel good. Why is it the churches like

  368. Harriet's are full of people because they get what they want.

  369. They're told what they want it tickles them, It makes

  370. them feel good. And when we're all about feel good

  371. ladies and gentlemen, we won't see about gospel. Witness. No man,

  372. having drunk the old wine straightway, desireth to new, for

  373. he saith the old is better. The problem is not

  374. a choice over the new or the old.

  375. The choice has already been made.

  376. We always will choose for ourself the old way, the

  377. old garment, even with its holes, the old wineskins that

  378. have a few drops of old wine in them. It

  379. just tastes better to us. We've made this choice because

  380. our souls are dead, lifeless and corrupt. And what do

  381. we need. We need a physician. We need a physician

  382. that will call sinners to repentance. That's what we need.

  383. We don't need good deeds. We don't need to wear

  384. the certain clothes and the funny hats and the colored

  385. shoes and to do all the things that religion tells

  386. us to do. We need Jesus, that's what we need.

  387. We need the old garment to be made new. We

  388. need the old wine skins to be made new. That's

  389. what we need. Because He wants to put the new

  390. on us. But the first thing that has to happen.

  391. There has to be a change, and that comes about

  392. when Jesus calls us to himself. The only thing here's

  393. my application today. The only thing that will resolve the

  394. problem of corrupt desires is the great physician calling sinners

  395. to repentance. The great physician now is near the sympathizing Jesus.

  396. He speaks the drooping heart to cheer, Oh hear the

  397. voice of Jesus. Must we go on in churches today

  398. acting like our good deeds have any effect on the

  399. grace of God?

  400. How long?

  401. How long before we abandon all of that and realize

  402. that the only thing that we bring to salvation is

  403. our sin and corruption. That's it, That's all we add

  404. to it. He does all the rest, He's done all

  405. the rest, and he's calling men and women, boys and

  406. girls to himself right today. He speaks the drooping heart

  407. to cheer, Oh hear the voice of Jesus. If you're

  408. trusting in anything other than the mercy of God, in

  409. Christ Jesus, than your in jeopardy, perishing, bursting, spilling is

  410. on the menu. Feasting on stolen waters and secret bread,

  411. and yeah, and secret bread leads to nothing good As

  412. a matter of fact, if you go back to Proverbs nine,

  413. where the harlot speaks, Solomon writes at the end of

  414. that he says, but he knoweth not that the dead

  415. are there, and that her guests are in the depths

  416. of hell. The old is better, the stolen water, the

  417. secret bread. We think it tastes fine and wonderful, but

  418. the dead are there, the guests are in the depths

  419. of hell. Father, thank you for giving us this parable bar, Savior,

  420. and we ask that you would help us to apply it.

  421. May there be many today who come to know Jesus,

  422. who trade in the old for the new, and we

  423. just thank you for that. We asked that you'd speak

  424. to hearts today, for we pray in Jesus' name, Amen,
