‘“It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.”’ (Luke 16:17)

Luke 16:17

1. Following Jesus means listening to Him

Yesterday we saw that Christians are described as ‘forcefully’ entering the Kingdom; that is, they are to be radically repentant of sin and radically devoted to following Jesus the King. Now, in verse 17, we are to understand that in order to radically follow Christ, we must value the whole of God’s Word.

2. No Words of God are to be dropped

Jesus tells us that ‘It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.’ Because God is unchanging, it is actually easier for creation - heaven and earth - to disappear that it is for God’s will and ways to change!

We must not pick and choose our best bits from the Bible. For example, as we’ll see in our next devotional, our attitude to marriage must be Biblical.

3. How do we listen to God?

God’s Word is God’s revealed will to us. To love His Word is to love and listen to God. If we ‘drop’ things out of God’s Word because we would prefer it didn’t teach this or that, we are rebelling against God! So, simply, how do you and I show our value for God by listening to Him in His Word each day?
