From Luke 19:11-15, let’s reflect on how Jesus is the true and good King and wants to rule in our lives.

“While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. He said: ‘A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘‘Put this money to work,’’ he said, ‘‘until I come back.’’ But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’’ “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.” (Luke 19:11-15)

How Does This Connect to Zacchaeus?

This parable follows Zacchaeus’ transformation—his salvation was shown through repentance and a changed attitude toward wealth. The theme continues: receiving Jesus as King and serving Him with all we have.

When Will the Kingdom of God Come?

Many expected Jesus to overthrow Roman rule and restore Israel’s former glory immediately. But Jesus corrects this misconception, teaching that His Kingdom will not come in its fullness until His return.

What Should We Do While Waiting?

Jesus shows that there is a delay before His Kingdom is fully revealed. In this waiting period, He calls us to:

1. Receive Him as King – Surrendering to His rule is the foundation of true discipleship.

2. Serve Him with What We Have – Like the servants entrusted with minas, we must use our gifts and resources for His purposes. Waiting is not passive but a time of active faithfulness.

Have We Truly Accepted Jesus as King?

The nobleman in the parable, whilst having characteristics out of keeping with Jesus, nevertheless represents Jesus. Some subjects rejected him, saying, “We don’t want this man to be our king.” This mirrors how many in Israel rejected Jesus, leading to the cross.

However, a bright beam of hope breaks through this account of rejection; we read, ‘“He was made king, however, and returned home.”’ During Jesus’ earthly ministry, many rejected Him, however, many, like Zacchaeus, received Him as Lord and Saviour. Likewise in our day, through our witness, many will reject, but many will receive the King. Nothing can stop the growth of God’s Kingdom!
