  1. I want to talk to you this morning about building a culture that combats the enemy schemes.

  2. Building a culture that combats the enemy schemes.

  3. Talked about some of these things, or a lot of these things at Bellicose the last couple weeks.

  4. So if you guys heard that, it's going to be some similar stuff, but hopefully specifically to our church, Christ Church.

  5. So, essentially, you know, we're in the first few months of this church plant.

  6. And a lot of what we're building into it now will be stuff that will be just caught more in the future than it will be intentionally built.

  7. Culture is caught.

  8. And so there's certain things that when we're intentional to build into our culture now, eventually we won't have to try very hard to build them.

  9. And new people will come in and just be, oh, this is normal.

  10. This is what you do.

  11. And that's the benefit of culture.

  12. That's also the drawback of culture.

  13. Because when you build the wrong things, people catch the wrong thing.

  14. Okay?

  15. So, this time of our church life, building into kind of the wet cement of our foundation, is really important that we build well.

  16. And that verse says, the one that I preached on when we sent you guys all off, that we should be careful how we build.

  17. Okay?

  18. Okay?

  19. And so, when we're culture building, it's good for us to think, though, too, it's oftentimes we think, oh, the culture of our church will be determined by the culture of our church.

  20. Sounds redundant.

  21. But really, there's two kind of things that factor into it.

  22. One, the culture of our own homes always affects the household of God.

  23. Okay?

  24. Does that make sense?

  25. So, like, the qualifications for an overseer and elder in 1 Timothy 3.

  26. He, speaking of an overseer, must manage his own household well, with all dignity, keeping his children submissive.

  27. For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care for God's church?

  28. Okay?

  29. And then he says later in verse 12, when he's talking about deacons, similar thing.

  30. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.

  31. Later, in verse 15, he says, he speaks of the church as the household of God, which is the church of the living God.

  32. Okay?

  33. The household of God, which is the church of the living God.

  34. And so, oftentimes, we've gotten into this deception that we can separate the household, our own household, from the household of God.

  35. When in God's economy, in his scriptures, he's saying, if you can't care for your own household, you can't care for the household of God.

  36. And so, ultimately, when we're building into the culture of a church, we're always building on those two fronts.

  37. We're building in households and then the household of God.

  38. And you can't just build the household of God and not pay attention to your own household.

  39. The household, your personal household comes first in divine order, according to 1 Timothy 3,

  40. in order for the culture of the household of God to be what it's supposed to be.

  41. You can't care for the household of God if you don't care first for your own household.

  42. And so, a lot of this starts off with us just saying, okay, we need to make sure we're building these things.

  43. There are demonic schemes against us.

  44. The devil has a vision to thwart what God is doing.

  45. And one of the main ways we combat it is by having a house in order, both our personal house, and then a household of God in order.

  46. Does that make sense?

  47. You follow me on that?

  48. Okay.

  49. So, but I wanted to go into a little bit more specific of what the schemes of the devil are that I see really coming at us right now.

  50. And I think it's important for us.

  51. He's not going to be new to you, but I think when we talk about it together, it kind of opens our eyes to see what we're up against

  52. and maybe give us a little bit more sobriety.

  53. So, 2 Corinthians 10, I mean, sorry, 2 Corinthians 2, 10 to 11, in the NIV says,

  54. Anyone you forgive, I also forgive.

  55. And what I have forgiven, if there was anything to forgive, I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,

  56. in order, okay, so answering the question why, in order that Satan might not outwit us, for we are not unaware of his schemes.

  57. Okay.

  58. The devil has schemes.

  59. Okay.

  60. We shouldn't be outwitted by his schemes.

  61. In other words, we should know what his schemes are.

  62. We should not be unaware of them.

  63. Ephesians 6, 11 says, put on the whole armor of God.

  64. Why?

  65. So that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

  66. There are demonic schemes that are against us, and we are to stand against them.

  67. Okay.

  68. So, the way I kind of envision this and see this is that there's three things that the devil has been throwing at us and our culture big time these days.

  69. First one is trying to get us, all three of them are isolated, fruitless consumers.

  70. Okay.

  71. The devil is trying to get us isolated.

  72. He's trying to get us to not bear fruit.

  73. And he's trying to get us to just only think about consuming.

  74. This is kind of an onslaught of our culture.

  75. It's coming at us harder than ever before.

  76. And if we're not aware of it, it'll come into the church as well.

  77. And I'll talk about that in a second as well.

  78. So, first one, isolated.

  79. You see this all over in kind of our culture.

  80. You see it with social media.

  81. You can be in the same room with a bunch of people, and everybody's on their phones, right?

  82. It just, it isolates us.

  83. I'm not saying that means that that's bad in and of itself.

  84. In fact, a lot of times what it's really just exposing is what's inside of us rather than the evil of, like, social media.

  85. It's really the evil in our own hearts that gravitates towards that isolation.

  86. That's the desire of our flesh, to not care about other people, to only care about ourselves.

  87. Social media, you see this in what's happening with the government shutdowns that we had with COVID, all isolation, where it's basically built into us now for us to be used to that.

  88. It didn't really, there wasn't a whole lot of opposition to it because this is our culture now.

  89. You see this in entertainment, with our phones, with the epidemic of loneliness.

  90. If you just look up news articles on loneliness, it's at epidemic proportions, where most people are feeling lonely.

  91. Most people are feeling isolated.

  92. And this is a demonic strategy.

  93. This is not an accident.

  94. The devil wants you to feel isolated.

  95. And it's crept into the church as well.

  96. You have people who are part of churches, but they have no friends.

  97. That is absolutely asinine and absurd.

  98. Like, that makes no sense whatsoever.

  99. And that's ipso facto not the church as well, okay?

  100. You cannot have a church where you don't have friends.

  101. That's not church.

  102. You can call it a million other things, but don't call it church, okay?

  103. But this is the devil's strategy.

  104. Like, yeah, I'm a part of this church.

  105. Do you have any friends there?

  106. No.

  107. What?

  108. Right?

  109. Like, this is, and you might think, well, yeah, I would never do that.

  110. But I'm telling you, in the name of church, this is happening all over the place.

  111. Elders who aren't friends.

  112. You have pastors and elders who are a team of elders, and they don't have a relationship.

  113. They're not friends.

  114. They're just, they're professionals.

  115. Okay, this, it's, comes into the church where we don't act like family, okay?

  116. We're, we're, we want community, so to speak, and that's what everybody says.

  117. I've heard so many people that come to church, they say, oh, I'm looking for community.

  118. All right?

  119. Well, there's nothing distinctly Christian about community.

  120. You can get community anywhere.

  121. There is something distinctly Christian about the family of God.

  122. God creates family.

  123. The devil tries to counterfeit it.

  124. He's the father of lies.

  125. And his version of church is a counterfeit family where we're not friends and where we're not connected and where we're still isolated, but we call it community.

  126. That's dangerous.

  127. All right?

  128. This is the, this is the strategy.

  129. We saw this infiltrating the church when the church just played dead and just did whatever the government wanted to do with these government shutdowns and just stopped meeting.

  130. You know?

  131. The church you guys were sent out of?

  132. I mean, I remember multiple people coming to Bellicose Church, and they were coming from other churches.

  133. I'm just like, why are these people coming from other churches?

  134. What is going on with other churches?

  135. And they literally say, I remember people saying, I have not heard from my church in any way, shape, or form for three months.

  136. How does that even happen?

  137. All right?

  138. But again, it's a demonic strategy.

  139. Isolated.

  140. Get people isolated.

  141. Get the church isolated.

  142. People who think that church is just an optional thing, that church is, as long as I get a certain level of community or a certain level of preaching, it doesn't really matter what it looks like.

  143. And so I can substitute with podcasts and just make sure I get together with people who are my friends here and there.

  144. But that's not the church.

  145. Okay?

  146. The church is specific things.

  147. The church is a family, a body, an army, salt, light.

  148. The church is a house of prayer.

  149. It's many other things.

  150. And so we can't just do, you know, kind of our own version of church and say, oh, I have community, and I get some preaching on a podcast, and that's church.

  151. That's not church.

  152. And you wouldn't find anything like that in the Bible.

  153. But again, that is a demonic strategy to get you isolated and think, oh, I'm fine.

  154. I have community.

  155. I have preaching.

  156. Therefore, I have church.

  157. You absolutely don't have church if you have that.

  158. You do not.

  159. And I think the Bible is clear on that.

  160. You don't see anything like that in the book of Acts or anything in the epistles.

  161. It's people being stuck in the same small group for 20 years, right, where it's like they never get any other people.

  162. They've hit their friend limit.

  163. They've hit their capacity for who they can know.

  164. There's no mission.

  165. It's just I want to grow old with this group of people, and our kids grow up together, and there's not a desire to be on mission to lost people.

  166. It's a demonic strategy of isolation.

  167. This kind of mentality that says I can only get to know so many people.

  168. I can't get to know more than that.

  169. I only have this certain friend limit that I could get.

  170. It's all demonic strategy of isolation.

  171. Second, fruitless.

  172. We see this in the culture.

  173. We see this with the scourge of abortion.

  174. You see this on social media.

  175. People trumpeting how awesome it is to be a double-income, no-kid family.

  176. Saying how great that is, as if not having kids is the new cool thing to do.

  177. Fruitlessness.

  178. It's less people getting married than ever before.

  179. This is the first time in American history where more people don't get married than do.

  180. And it's all the demonic strategy of fruitlessness.

  181. You see this with the rampant rise of homosexuality.

  182. Again, what is it doing?

  183. Homosexual couples can't have kids.

  184. It's fruitless.

  185. It's all a strategy together.

  186. The amount of people exalting career over fruitfulness and over family.

  187. Exalting making money.

  188. You see this even with the trans movement where we're literally, now it's to the point

  189. where we're cutting off the actual parts of our body that were meant to bear fruit with

  190. children.

  191. I mean, think about this.

  192. It's a demonic strategy.

  193. It's a demonic strategy.

  194. And it's crept into the church.

  195. It's crept into the church as well.

  196. Where the church just becomes attenders and observers.

  197. I'm not bearing fruit myself.

  198. I just consume the fruit of others.

  199. I just attend.

  200. I just observe.

  201. I don't produce value.

  202. I'm not expected to produce value.

  203. I'm not expected to bear responsibility.

  204. I just come to the dog and pony show, put my money in the plate and leave.

  205. I consume things as products.

  206. I'm getting to the next point.

  207. Stay focused here.

  208. Fruitless, right?

  209. Not producing value.

  210. People who can't be counted on.

  211. Not having or valuing kids.

  212. Not valuing marriage.

  213. Not going after marriage.

  214. It's just, it's crept into the church where fruitlessness is becoming more and more normal.

  215. Becoming more and more normal.

  216. And this is not okay.

  217. We can't let this creep in.

  218. We can't, we have to fight this with everything within us.

  219. Okay?

  220. He said to us in Genesis, he said, be fruitful and multiply.

  221. He said, bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

  222. The church should bear fruit.

  223. The church should not be isolated.

  224. The church should not be fruitless.

  225. And the church should not be marked by consumption.

  226. Okay?

  227. We see this in our culture.

  228. Number three, consumers.

  229. Just the selfish, narcissistic kind of culture.

  230. Some of you maybe heard me say this before, but there was literally someone, I think, in

  231. Europe a couple years ago who married themself.

  232. I mean, talk about in the last days, there will be lovers of themselves.

  233. Like this woman literally married herself.

  234. Don't even know how that is a thing, but it was a thing.

  235. Like we've literally reached that point where someone married themself.

  236. Okay?

  237. This is the pinnacle of selfish, narcissistic behavior and thinking, but it's all demonic

  238. strategy to just have consumption be what you exist for.

  239. I exist to consume.

  240. You exist to consume.

  241. That's what the devil's trying to get into our hearts and minds.

  242. Okay?

  243. Where it's just, I don't exist for another person.

  244. I don't even think about marriage.

  245. I'm just thinking about what I can consume.

  246. You have men, there's women who'd love to marry a guy and these guys are just like, what

  247. in the world?

  248. Like you literally just exist for yourself.

  249. How in the world could I ever marry you because you're so full of yourself?

  250. I would never trust you to be someone who could be in a family.

  251. And it's the same thing with women as well, where there's men who would love to get married,

  252. but women who just are living for their own narcissistic pleasure.

  253. Okay?

  254. Not thinking about what it means to be someone who gives of themselves.

  255. It's kind of a culture of permanent adolescence.

  256. We're living in Neverland.

  257. Okay?

  258. Where nobody grows up.

  259. Everybody just continues to stay in this perpetual state of adolescence.

  260. We've come up with this new phrase called adultalescence, where it's just basically another excuse for people to live like kids while on into their old age.

  261. Right?

  262. And this has become normative.

  263. A culture basically drunk on entertainment and pornography.

  264. Right?

  265. We just consume entertainment, consume entertainment, consume pornography.

  266. It's like, how many shows can I watch?

  267. How many movies can I take in?

  268. How many podcasts can I consume?

  269. How much pornography can I consume?

  270. Whatever.

  271. It's just me, me, me.

  272. Consume, consume, consume.

  273. And it's corrupted in the church as well.

  274. Basically where you have a primarily receiving, not partnering kind of mentality when it comes to the church.

  275. I'm not bearing responsibility and I'm not partnering together.

  276. Where it becomes normative to complain about the church, to beat up the church.

  277. Everyone thinks it's so fun to say how bad the church is.

  278. Well, how about making it better?

  279. How about being a group of people that says, I'm not going to complain about the church.

  280. I'm going to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak.

  281. I'm actually going to get in the ring and do something about it.

  282. It's very easy to criticize people from the stands.

  283. It's very hard to get in the ring and actually do something about it.

  284. Who are going to be the people who get in the ring when it comes to the church?

  285. It's the kind of people in the church who are upset with change that makes them uncomfortable.

  286. Where worship, preaching, and child care become commodities that you consume.

  287. You know, kind of the Holy Trinity of church planting.

  288. It's like you have this worship experience that I can consume.

  289. And then we say things like, oh, how was worship?

  290. Ah, it wasn't very good.

  291. You know, it's just like, wait a second.

  292. Worship doesn't exist for you.

  293. Worship is for the Lord.

  294. It's not a product that you consume and determine whether it's good or bad.

  295. It's something you give of yourself.

  296. Okay?

  297. And so we determine whether or not I'm church shopping.

  298. I'm looking for a good worship experience, good child care experience, and good preaching.

  299. And basically, I'm always rating it to see how it is.

  300. Instead of saying, the church is people, and I'm not meant to consume, I'm meant to be someone who bears fruit and provides things of value.

  301. And essentially, the church ends up being drunk on the same entertainment and pornography that the world is.

  302. This is a three-fold demonic vision.

  303. These are schemes that we should not be unaware of.

  304. Okay?

  305. We're talking about the devil trying to get us isolated, trying to get us not bearing fruit, and trying to be consumers.

  306. All right?

  307. Basically, sacrificing fruitfulness for our own desires.

  308. Don't be so naive as to think that none of this has touched us.

  309. All right?

  310. Don't be so naive.

  311. It's touched all of us.

  312. We are in this culture.

  313. It affects us.

  314. Okay?

  315. And so you can't just say, oh, that's not me.

  316. You're a fool if you say that.

  317. You have to be wise enough to say, this has affected me in some way, and I need to make sure that I am on the offensive as the church.

  318. In my own household and in the house of God.

  319. All right?

  320. Which is why our mission and vision is the kingdom of God and all of life together.

  321. Okay?

  322. This is basically an assault against these three things.

  323. Right?

  324. The kingdom of God is about bearing fruit and producing value.

  325. All right?

  326. Seeking first the kingdom of God, it will have the fruit of the spirit.

  327. It will have...

  328. When you're seeking first God's kingdom, fruit is normative.

  329. Okay?

  330. Producing value is normative.

  331. The actual substance of Christ is normative.

  332. All right?

  333. When we seek first the kingdom of God.

  334. If we don't seek first the kingdom of God, it won't be.

  335. We have to seek God's kingdom first.

  336. Secondly, we ought to seek his kingdom in all of life.

  337. Which is the kind of combating the selfish kind of mindset.

  338. Church gets really weird when Christ isn't all your life.

  339. Okay?

  340. It doesn't work.

  341. It gets convoluted.

  342. We start to kind of butt heads.

  343. Because everything that God has built into church requires all your life.

  344. When you try to function as if Christ isn't your life and that church is living for Jesus

  345. is just a part of your life, it's never going to work the way it's supposed to.

  346. It's never going to work the way it's supposed to.

  347. Most problems in church can be pointed to that reality.

  348. That we've made what's supposed to be an all of life thing into just a part of our life thing.

  349. And we're just trying to make excuses for it.

  350. Lastly, together.

  351. The kingdom of God and all of life together.

  352. Together.

  353. Where we share vision.

  354. We share priorities.

  355. And we share responsibility.

  356. Where we don't let people be alone and isolated.

  357. Where we're literally saying, I'm not going to let you go through this alone.

  358. I'm not going to let you go through hard times alone.

  359. I'm going to seek to make sure that we are seeking the kingdom.

  360. We're doing it all of life, but we're also doing it together.

  361. It's not, we're seeking the kingdom.

  362. We're doing it all of life.

  363. But we kind of do it in our kind of compartmentalized separate little worlds.

  364. No, we have to do it together.

  365. And the language of togetherness is what you see in the book of Acts.

  366. Right?

  367. So, how do we build this?

  368. How do we build a culture that combats the enemy's schemes?

  369. Well, we have to take care of what we build.

  370. You can build wood, hay, and stubble.

  371. Or you can build gold, silver, and precious stones.

  372. Right?

  373. 1 Corinthians 3 says,

  374. Let each one take care how he builds upon the foundation of Christ.

  375. For if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, and straw,

  376. each one's work will become manifest.

  377. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire.

  378. And the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.

  379. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive reward.

  380. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss.

  381. Though he himself will be saved, but only as through the fire.

  382. So, we have to ask ourselves, how are we going to build?

  383. Okay?

  384. How are we going to build?

  385. It's a slower pace right now in this small little church plant.

  386. Right?

  387. It's a little more chill.

  388. A little bit more relaxed.

  389. Right?

  390. Meeting in a...

  391. What would you call this?

  392. A shed.

  393. Shed church.

  394. Right?

  395. We're meeting in a shed.

  396. It's just a little bit more relaxed environment.

  397. And there's things that are really beneficial about that.

  398. But it's very important that we don't let that be...

  399. Like, the...

  400. We don't let that keep us from being on our spiritual toes.

  401. And that we're not careful how we build.

  402. We have to be careful how we build.

  403. And we need to build with costly stones.

  404. With gold and silver.

  405. Not with wood, hay, and stubble.

  406. And if we're not intentional in how we build,

  407. we won't build things into the culture in these important days.

  408. Like, it's not that what we build later won't be important.

  409. It's that what you build on the front end

  410. is what people are going to catch on the back end.

  411. Okay?

  412. And so what you're building now,

  413. we have to be very careful how we build.

  414. And this is the time when it's very easy not to be careful

  415. because you think, well, there's just so much less at stake.

  416. It's just this small group of believers

  417. meeting in a shed and meeting in our homes.

  418. It's like, no, you don't understand.

  419. That's what the devil would want you to believe.

  420. Actually, there's a ton at stake.

  421. What you build into the foundation right now,

  422. I mean, the church you guys were sent out of,

  423. thinking of Bellicose 13 years later,

  424. there are so many things that people catch now at that church

  425. that were built intentionally in the beginning.

  426. You guys are doing the hard work right now

  427. of building into the culture

  428. what you want to see later on,

  429. what God wants to see later on.

  430. And we have to be diligent to do those things.

  431. So I got, don't worry, I'm going to fly through these,

  432. but I got 13 things that I want us to,

  433. things to avoid, wood, hay, and straw,

  434. and then things to build, gold, silver, and precious stones.

  435. Okay.

  436. First one, avoid community without mission

  437. and mission without community.

  438. Avoid community without mission

  439. and mission without community.

  440. Okay.

  441. Community without mission

  442. is selfish, codependent, and complacent.

  443. Okay.

  444. It's not okay for us to just say,

  445. oh, this is great.

  446. We got our nice little group.

  447. We got our little mission communities.

  448. We're meeting in homes.

  449. They're nice and small.

  450. We got our small church.

  451. Man, I love small church.

  452. It's just nice and intimate and fun.

  453. And then we forget that there's lost people out there.

  454. It becomes selfish, codependent, and complacent.

  455. We cannot have community without mission.

  456. All right.

  457. That's very important.

  458. But also mission without community

  459. forfeits one of the greatest apologetics for the gospel.

  460. Jesus said, I want to make you fishers of men.

  461. What's the net that you're catching those men into?

  462. It's community.

  463. It's deeper the community.

  464. It's the family of God.

  465. So we can't just say, oh, yeah, let's be on mission.

  466. Let's be on mission.

  467. And forget that to be diligent,

  468. to cultivate a sense of family in the church

  469. so that there's something to adopt them into.

  470. God is a father who adopted us into his family

  471. through the son, right?

  472. And we need to be that family that people are adopted into.

  473. Otherwise, we betray the gospel with our very existence.

  474. Okay?

  475. Got to be both.

  476. We need to build mission and community.

  477. Mission and community that goes deeper

  478. than just community, but it's family.

  479. All right?

  480. We have to build both.

  481. And we have to make sure that some of you

  482. are going to be better than others

  483. at detecting where we're missing that.

  484. And you can't just say, well, oh, someone else will get it.

  485. No.

  486. If God is putting, if you're seeing that,

  487. you have to speak up.

  488. You're saying, oh, we have mission,

  489. but we're lacking community.

  490. We have to, you have to speak up and help insert that.

  491. If we have a sense of community,

  492. but we're not on mission,

  493. and you're kind of angsty about that,

  494. maybe that's because God has put that in your heart

  495. to make sure that that's there.

  496. Don't assume someone else has that.

  497. Right?

  498. Samir?

  499. Avoid community without mission

  500. and mission without community

  501. and build missional community.

  502. Build both.

  503. Number two.

  504. Okay?

  505. Avoid inviting people to your missional community.

  506. Avoid inviting people to your missional community.

  507. What do I mean by that?

  508. All right?

  509. You can't invite someone to your missional community.

  510. It's not possible.

  511. Okay?

  512. Because it's not a weekly meeting.

  513. Right?

  514. It's not a weekly meeting.

  515. You can't go to it,

  516. and it's not a night of the week.

  517. You can invite people to a dinner.

  518. You can invite people to a hangout.

  519. You can invite people to a bonfire,

  520. a men's or ladies get-together,

  521. a game night,

  522. a Bible or book study,

  523. a kids' sports game.

  524. You can invite people to play a sport.

  525. You can invite people to a park night,

  526. a movie night,

  527. a camp out,

  528. a weekend getaway,

  529. a party,

  530. a celebration,

  531. a missional outreach,

  532. but you cannot invite someone

  533. to a missional community

  534. because

  535. a missional community is people.

  536. Do you understand what I'm saying?

  537. Like you should,

  538. as a church,

  539. we should,

  540. we function,

  541. the smaller groups of people

  542. in our church,

  543. the way we organize the life

  544. of our church,

  545. where we do counseling,

  546. where we do discipleship,

  547. where we do the everyday stuff of life

  548. with our church together,

  549. where we share meals together,

  550. where we watch each other's kids,

  551. where we pray together.

  552. Missional communities

  553. are the small family believers

  554. where we're doing mission together,

  555. all these things.

  556. Okay?

  557. But you should never invite someone

  558. to a missional community.

  559. It's not possible.

  560. You can invite people

  561. to the life of the missional community,

  562. and it could be all those things

  563. that I just said.

  564. Do you understand the difference?

  565. It becomes really weird

  566. when you say,

  567. hey,

  568. come to my MC.

  569. First of all,

  570. you have that weird,

  571. like,

  572. acronym language

  573. that people are like,

  574. why are you talking in acronyms?

  575. That's weird.

  576. Okay?

  577. Just talk normal.

  578. Why can't,

  579. the church just needs to be normal

  580. and just say,

  581. hey,

  582. we're having dinner

  583. with some people from my church.

  584. You want to come over?

  585. Hey,

  586. we're all getting together

  587. in a park

  588. and hanging out together

  589. with some friends of ours

  590. or some people from the church.

  591. Would you like to come?

  592. Hey,

  593. we're going to hang out

  594. and have a bonfire house,

  595. make some s'mores.

  596. Would you like to come?

  597. Or we're going to go,

  598. for the next eight weeks,

  599. we're going to go through

  600. this book of the Bible

  601. or we're going to go through

  602. this book

  603. that someone else wrote

  604. with some people from our church.

  605. We'd love for you to come.

  606. Do you see the difference?

  607. You can build this

  608. into the culture

  609. of our church right away.

  610. It's hard for people

  611. to get around that.

  612. I don't know at what point in time

  613. the church became

  614. all about inviting people

  615. to meetings.

  616. Like,

  617. look at your,

  618. read your Bible.

  619. Read the book of Acts.

  620. Is there ever a time

  621. when someone is inviting

  622. someone to a meeting

  623. and that,

  624. that's what,

  625. that's like what the sum total

  626. of churches become.

  627. Hey,

  628. come to a Sunday morning gathering.

  629. It's just,

  630. it's like we're,

  631. we're basically

  632. trading personal discipleship,

  633. personal hospitality,

  634. and personal evangelism

  635. for a meeting invite.

  636. At what point in time

  637. did Christianity

  638. just become about

  639. meeting invites?

  640. What we should be doing

  641. is sharing our lives

  642. with one another.

  643. Paul said,

  644. I share with you

  645. not,

  646. not only the gospel,

  647. but our very lives.

  648. And so we invite people

  649. into our lives,

  650. not to just a meeting

  651. so that someone else

  652. can do the work.

  653. You can build that

  654. into this culture

  655. right from the get-go,

  656. or we can get weird

  657. and goofy

  658. and invite people

  659. to acronym language

  660. and people are like,

  661. what is this?

  662. You guys are kind of weird.

  663. Like,

  664. how about we just be normal

  665. and just invite things,

  666. people into our lives

  667. and get to know people.

  668. And then when they do come,

  669. and then maybe

  670. when they show interest

  671. or when they get saved

  672. or whatever happens,

  673. and then they want to come

  674. on a Sunday morning,

  675. we can say,

  676. oh yeah,

  677. come on Sunday morning.

  678. You know,

  679. so-and-so and so-and-so

  680. and so-and-so.

  681. You're not,

  682. it's not going to be weird

  683. and intimidating for you.

  684. Does that make sense?

  685. Build the people.

  686. Don't just build meetings,

  687. build the people.

  688. This is what we need to do.

  689. Number three,

  690. avoid a one-home-centric

  691. missional community.

  692. Okay?

  693. It's not a house church.

  694. Missional communities

  695. are not house churches.

  696. Build a happy,

  697. joyful hosting

  698. among all or most.

  699. A community that meets

  700. in multiple homes.

  701. Not just one,

  702. sharing the load with everyone.

  703. Not just one homeowner,

  704. always willing to go

  705. where the people

  706. that it's on mission to are.

  707. Okay?

  708. We don't just want,

  709. these missional communities

  710. aren't house churches,

  711. so it shouldn't just be

  712. one home-centric.

  713. And you might say,

  714. well,

  715. my home's not big enough.

  716. Think of how weird

  717. that would sound

  718. to someone

  719. who's meeting in the church

  720. in some third world country

  721. who meets in their home

  722. that only is one room.

  723. Like,

  724. the whole house

  725. is one room.

  726. Think of how goofy

  727. you would sound

  728. when you say,

  729. I can't meet in my,

  730. you know,

  731. 1800 square foot home

  732. because it's too small

  733. and because my bathroom's outdated.

  734. And their bathroom's

  735. in a hole behind the house

  736. out,

  737. you know,

  738. wherever.

  739. That's goofy.

  740. But that's how we as Americans talk.

  741. Don't talk like that.

  742. Open up your home.

  743. Don't just let one person

  744. be the one

  745. who's doing that.

  746. And by all means,

  747. don't say,

  748. well,

  749. by all means too,

  750. be able to meet in multiple homes

  751. and train your children

  752. to do as well.

  753. Sometimes we've trained

  754. our children

  755. to only be able to meet

  756. in our home

  757. because we've childproof

  758. our home.

  759. We haven't taught our kids

  760. how to function

  761. in someone else's home.

  762. That's not good.

  763. Again,

  764. this is something

  765. you can build into the culture.

  766. If you can only host people

  767. in your home

  768. because your kids

  769. can only handle your home,

  770. you're not training

  771. your kids well.

  772. You're not training

  773. your kids for church

  774. and you're not training

  775. your kids for hospitality.

  776. It's an important thing

  777. to get into our kids.

  778. And please don't use the excuse

  779. while I'm not just hospitable.

  780. Romans 12, 13.

  781. Okay?

  782. Contribute to the needs

  783. of the saints

  784. and seek to show hospitality.

  785. 1 Peter 4, 9.

  786. Show hospitality

  787. to one another

  788. without grumbling.

  789. This isn't an optional thing.

  790. This is for all Christians.

  791. We're all supposed

  792. to show hospitality.

  793. Yes, there's some people

  794. with a gift of hospitality,

  795. but everybody's supposed

  796. to show hospitality.

  797. Number four.

  798. Avoid study-centric

  799. missional community.

  800. It's not primarily

  801. a Bible or book study.

  802. Okay?

  803. You can and should do

  804. studies in the Bible

  805. or in other books,

  806. but it can't just be that.

  807. Okay?

  808. We have to build discipleship

  809. in all of life.

  810. Deuteronomy 6, 6-9

  811. is a great way

  812. of thinking about this,

  813. which it's talking

  814. about the family,

  815. but it should be

  816. about the family

  817. of God as well.

  818. It says,

  819. All these words

  820. that I command you today

  821. shall be on your heart.

  822. You shall teach them

  823. diligently to your children.

  824. You shall talk of them

  825. when you sit in your house

  826. and when you walk by the way

  827. and when you lie down

  828. and when you rise.

  829. You shall bind them

  830. as a sign on your hand

  831. and they shall be

  832. as frontlets between your eyes.

  833. You shall write them

  834. on the doorposts

  835. of your house

  836. and on your gates.

  837. Essentially,

  838. it's saying

  839. discipleship should be

  840. an all of life thing.

  841. It's not just,

  842. you know,

  843. well,

  844. we have this little study

  845. here and there.

  846. We should be looking

  847. for opportunities

  848. to speak the truth

  849. into people's life

  850. in the everyday stuff

  851. of life.

  852. And that's where

  853. it's most normal, right?

  854. You're going through

  855. something and say,

  856. Hey, how are you handling that?

  857. How's this going?

  858. And if that becomes

  859. a normative culture,

  860. then our church,

  861. when people come into the church,

  862. they catch that.

  863. Oh,

  864. you don't just do

  865. discipleship in official meetings.

  866. You do do discipleship

  867. in official meetings,

  868. but you're also doing

  869. it in the everyday stuff

  870. of life.

  871. I know I can count

  872. on rich conversation

  873. in discipleship

  874. even when I'm not

  875. at an official

  876. Sunday morning meeting

  877. or such.

  878. And that should be normative.

  879. You have the opportunity

  880. to build that.

  881. Will you build that?

  882. Will you build discipleship

  883. in all of life?

  884. Number five,

  885. avoid leader-centric

  886. missional community.

  887. Okay,

  888. what I mean by this is

  889. missional communities

  890. where all the leadership

  891. falls on one person

  892. or one couple,

  893. just the lead partners,

  894. where you're almost

  895. treating them like

  896. mini elders

  897. or they're viewing

  898. themselves as that,

  899. but rather building

  900. partnership.

  901. Partner-led

  902. missional community

  903. where multiple people

  904. are bearing responsibility,

  905. sharing the leadership

  906. weight of responsibility

  907. among all its partners.

  908. Okay,

  909. the lead partner

  910. is the first among equals,

  911. but all the partners

  912. carry the weight together.

  913. Okay,

  914. Philippians 1,

  915. 3 to 5,

  916. I thank my God

  917. in all my remembrance

  918. of you,

  919. always in every prayer

  920. of mine for you

  921. all making my prayer

  922. with joy because

  923. of your partnership

  924. in the gospel

  925. from the first day

  926. until now.

  927. It should be partnership.

  928. Okay,

  929. it's so easy to just

  930. have a couple leaders

  931. leading the church

  932. and having all the

  933. responsibility on them.

  934. And then it's saying,

  935. oh,

  936. I want community.

  937. There is no such thing

  938. as community

  939. without responsibility

  940. and accountability.

  941. There's no such thing.

  942. You cannot have

  943. true accountability

  944. or true family life

  945. together

  946. without shared responsibility

  947. and accountability.

  948. That has to be there.

  949. That's absolutely necessary.

  950. What are you going to build?

  951. Are we going to build it

  952. so we just farm it in?

  953. We go to a gathering

  954. together with our

  955. missional community

  956. and we go with

  957. nothing to bring,

  958. nothing on our hearts,

  959. nothing,

  960. not spirit-led.

  961. We're just consumed

  962. with our day

  963. and we just show up

  964. tired,

  965. disinterested

  966. and unengaged.

  967. We show up on a Sunday morning.

  968. It's just,

  969. it's the worship team's job

  970. and the preacher's job

  971. to kind of do everything.

  972. I'm just here.

  973. I'm just consuming.

  974. Are you coming?

  975. Led by the Spirit saying,

  976. hey,

  977. I'm going to cultivate

  978. a culture of giving,

  979. a culture of shared responsibility,

  980. a culture of partnership

  981. so that everybody

  982. who's in this church

  983. going forward

  984. will understand

  985. this is how you do church.

  986. This is normal.

  987. For those of you

  988. who have never experienced

  989. church like that as normal,

  990. you can.

  991. You can.

  992. I've seen it multiple times.

  993. I'm not talking about

  994. some unicorn here.

  995. I'm talking about

  996. normal Christianity.

  997. This is what it's supposed

  998. to be like.

  999. Number six,

  1000. avoid one-person-centric

  1001. discipleship,

  1002. primarily one-on-one

  1003. discipleship,

  1004. but instead build

  1005. discipleship for

  1006. multiple people.

  1007. Okay?

  1008. Multiple people

  1009. through multiple gifts

  1010. who are in multiple

  1011. different stages of life.

  1012. That's how discipleship

  1013. should be.

  1014. Now,

1015. does that mean you can't

  1016. do anything one-on-one?

  1017. No.

  1018. But it should never

  1019. just be that.

  1020. Because 1 Corinthians 12

  1021. says all the parts

  1022. of the body

  1023. are indispensable.

  1024. If you only have

  1025. this one person

  1026. who's quote-unquote

  1027. discipling you,

  1028. and you're not

  1029. gleaning from the rest

  1030. of the body,

  1031. you are missing out

  1032. from things.

  1033. And if you think

1034. that your part of the body

  1035. is not that important,

  1036. and you think,

  1037. well,

  1038. I don't have the same role

  1039. as so-and-so

  1040. who's really good

  1041. at speaking,

  1042. but I'm not good

  1043. at speaking,

  1044. you don't understand

  1045. your gift is indispensable,

  1046. and who you are

  1047. needs to bear upon

  1048. other people

  1049. in the context

  1050. of discipleship.

  1051. It can't just be

  1052. one-on-one.

  1053. It has to be

  1054. a shared responsibility.

  1055. You need to build

  1056. discipleship

  1057. from multiple people

  1058. through multiple gifts

  1059. who are in multiple

  1060. different stages of life.

  1061. It can't just be

  1062. young people

  1063. with young people

  1064. and old people

  1065. with old people.

  1066. You've got to mix

  1067. it up together.

  1068. There's much to glean

  1069. from one another,

1070. and it goes both ways.

  1071. Number seven,

  1072. avoid meeting

  1073. without meals.

  1074. That doesn't mean

  1075. you can't ever meet

  1076. without a meal,

  1077. but I'm talking about

  1078. building a meal-sharing

  1079. familial culture.

  1080. It takes more work

  1081. to share meals together,

  1082. but you know what?

  1083. That's what families do.

  1084. Healthy families

  1085. eat meals together.

  1086. There's been study

  1087. after study done

  1088. of the difference

  1089. between a family

  1090. that eats meals together

  1091. and ones who don't.

  1092. That used to be

  1093. a normative part

  1094. of our culture.

  1095. It's something

  1096. that's going away,

  1097. and it's something

  1098. that's gone away

  1099. from church culture

  1100. as well.

  1101. We should eat

  1102. meals together.

  1103. Families eat meals together.

  1104. Jesus ate meals

  1105. with people.

  1106. The disciples

  1107. ate meals together.

  1108. Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1109. 46 to 47

  1110. in the CSB

  1111. says,

  1112. Every day they devoted

  1113. themselves to meeting

  1114. together in the temple

  1115. and broke bread

  1116. from house to house.

  1117. They ate their food

  1118. with joyful

  1119. and sincere hearts,

  1120. praising God

  1121. and enjoying the favor

  1122. of all the people.

  1123. Every day the Lord

  1124. added to their number

1125. those who were being saved.

  1126. I know it's work

  1127. to do meals together.

  1128. I know it's work

  1129. to share the responsibility

  1130. of planning a meal.

  1131. I know it's work

1132. to do our once-a-month meals

  1133. that we're doing

  1134. on Sunday mornings

  1135. like today.

  1136. I know it's work

  1137. to do meals

  1138. in your home.

  1139. I know it's work

  1140. to feed people.

  1141. I know it's work

  1142. to feed people

  1143. when sometimes

  1144. they don't clean up

  1145. after,

  1146. help clean up

  1147. and help with

  1148. the responsibility.

  1149. That's all work,

  1150. but meal sharing

  1151. is a way

  1152. that helps people

  1153. feel comfortable

  1154. and where people

1155. can open up their hearts

  1156. to one another.

  1157. Very important.

  1158. It battles

  1159. that isolation culture.

  1160. Right?

  1161. Number eight,

  1162. avoid heavy,

  1163. burdensome,

  1164. missional community.

  1165. Instead,

  1166. building joy,

  1167. comfort,

  1168. refreshing,

  1169. and rest.

  1170. Okay?

  1171. Oftentimes with church

  1172. we think,

  1173. oh,

  1174. I'm part of a church,

1175. that means I've got to

1176. add a bunch of things

  1177. to my life.

  1178. Rather,

  1179. what about just

  1180. actually taking inventory?

1181. What are we already doing?

1182. What am I already involved with?

  1183. Like,

  1184. what are the neighbors

  1185. I'm already involved with?

  1186. What are the things

  1187. I'm already doing

  1188. with my kids?

  1189. What are the relationships

  1190. I already have?

1191. What do we already have

1192. and how can I just

  1193. show more gospel intentionality

  1194. with those things

  1195. that we have?

  1196. Instead of adding

  1197. a bunch of things,

  1198. are we being intentional

1199. to do what we're doing

  1200. right now

  1201. with a missional mindset

1202. and then doing it together

  1203. with other people?

  1204. So often,

  1205. the church says,

  1206. well,

1207. we've got to add this,

1208. we've got to add this program,

  1209. this program.

  1210. No.

1211. We don't need to do that.

  1212. We just need to

  1213. get on mission together

1214. in the everyday stuff of life,

1215. the stuff we're already doing.

  1216. You already have neighbors.

1217. You already have a job.

  1218. Your kids might already

1219. be involved with certain things,

1220. sports or this or that

  1221. or school stuff.

  1222. You already have

  1223. all these things.

  1224. Why not do them

  1225. with more missional

  1226. gospel intentionality

1227. and then do it together?

1228. That's what the church should be.

1229. We need to build that

  1230. and that's a lot more restful

  1231. instead of constantly

  1232. adding more stuff.

  1233. Philemon verse 7 says,

  1234. I've derived much joy

  1235. and comfort

  1236. from your love,

  1237. my brother,

  1238. because the hearts

  1239. of the saints

  1240. have been refreshed

  1241. through you.

  1242. What if we focused

  1243. on being a refreshment

  1244. to one another?

  1245. Not constantly placing

  1246. more burdens

  1247. on one another

  1248. but just saying,

1249. how can we do stuff together?

1250. How can we do stuff

  1251. where we refresh

  1252. one another?

1253. Where we're carrying the load

  1254. and we're saying,

  1255. you know what?

1256. We already have a lot going on.

  1257. We don't need to

  1258. overwhelm people

1259. with all kinds of stuff.

  1260. Let's just be intentional

  1261. with what we have.

  1262. Let's be good stewards

  1263. of what we have.

  1264. Number nine,

  1265. avoid a busy life.

  1266. Okay?

  1267. Lazy, indiscriminate,

  1268. unintentional,

1269. the tyranny of the urgent,

  1270. always busy

  1271. but never getting done

  1272. what you want

1273. or need to get done.

1274. You know what I'm saying?

  1275. Some of us,

1276. this is how we feel.

  1277. We feel like

  1278. we're on a hill

  1279. and we're constantly

  1280. riding the brakes.

1281. Our life is constantly busy.

  1282. We are constantly

  1283. doing things

  1284. and people say,

  1285. what's going on?

  1286. It's like,

  1287. oh, just so busy.

  1288. Just really busy.

1289. What are you busy with?

  1290. Ah,

  1291. I don't know.

1292. And you can't even say

  1293. what it is

  1294. because you're not doing,

  1295. your life is busy

  1296. but it's not filled

  1297. with the things

  1298. that you,

  1299. that are your priorities.

1300. You go to bed at night

  1301. thinking,

  1302. I'm so busy,

  1303. I'm so tired

  1304. but I'm constantly

  1305. feeling guilty

  1306. that I'm not doing

1307. what I should be doing.

1308. We need to leave that behind.

  1309. Okay?

  1310. We need to leave

  1311. a busy life behind

  1312. and instead build

  1313. a full life.

  1314. It's not a difference

1315. about how much you do

  1316. but what you do.

1317. Not about how much you do

  1318. but what you do.

  1319. Doing,

  1320. being in divine order

  1321. and doing what God

  1322. says to do.

  1323. Tim Ferriss says,

  1324. lack of time

  1325. is actually

  1326. lack of priorities.

  1327. Being busy

1328. is a form of laziness,

  1329. lazy thinking

  1330. and indiscriminate action.

  1331. Being overwhelmed

  1332. is often as unproductive

  1333. as doing nothing

1334. and is far more unpleasant.

  1335. In other words,

  1336. a full life

  1337. plans priorities

  1338. so priorities

  1339. are prioritized

  1340. and accomplished.

  1341. Right?

  1342. A full life

  1343. plans priorities

  1344. so priorities

  1345. are prioritized

  1346. and accomplished.

  1347. Right?

  1348. The Bible

  1349. asks us

  1350. commands us

  1351. to find out

  1352. what pleases the Lord.

  1353. Ephesians 5,

  1354. 15-17.

  1355. Look carefully

  1356. then how you walk.

  1357. Not as unwise

  1358. but as wise

  1359. making the best use

  1360. of the time

  1361. because the days

  1362. are evil.

  1363. Therefore do not

  1364. be foolish

  1365. but understand

  1366. what the will

  1367. of the Lord is.

  1368. It's very easy.

  1369. The last thing

  1370. we want to do

  1371. we might say,

  1372. oh,

  1373. new church plan.

1374. It's easy to just be busy.

1375. There's not as many people

  1376. to do the work.

  1377. So we're just

  1378. being busy

  1379. and being with people

  1380. and trying to get

1381. a mission to this person.

  1382. Busy and overwhelmed

  1383. and constantly

  1384. and your life

  1385. is flying by.

1386. Your kids are getting older.

1387. Your life is passing you by

1388. and all of a sudden

  1389. you realize

  1390. am I even doing

  1391. what I'm supposed

  1392. to be doing?

1393. Am I doing the priorities?

  1394. Do I have a busy life

  1395. or a full life?

  1396. A full life plans

  1397. your priorities.

  1398. The priorities

  1399. that God says

  1400. are priorities.

  1401. Making the best use

  1402. of the time.

  1403. Okay?

  1404. That's the difference.

  1405. It's very important

  1406. for us

  1407. not to just be

  1408. busy consuming

  1409. but rather

  1410. be

  1411. have a full life

  1412. of planning priorities

  1413. of how can I

  1414. be someone

  1415. who refreshes others

  1416. gives to others

  1417. and is intentional

  1418. with my life

1419. so that when I go to bed

1420. and I hit the pillow

  1421. I can say

  1422. you know what?

  1423. I did what God

  1424. wanted me to do.

1425. Today was a good day.

  1426. Number 10

  1427. avoiding

  1428. low bar partnership.

  1429. Partnership is what

  1430. we call membership

  1431. in this church.

  1432. Instead building

  1433. a high standard

  1434. of partnership

  1435. with accountability

  1436. and shared responsibility.

  1437. The strength

  1438. of our church

  1439. is very much

  1440. in the quality

  1441. of our partnership

  1442. together.

  1443. Okay?

  1444. The partners

  1445. are the people

  1446. we count on.

  1447. If we build that

  1448. into our church now

  1449. it's going to have

  1450. benefit

  1451. that will reap fruit

  1452. for years and years

  1453. and years

  1454. to say hey

  1455. it's important

  1456. that I partner

  1457. well with the church.

1458. That I can be someone

  1459. that people count on.

  1460. And the quality

  1461. of our church

  1462. so many people think

  1463. oh no the quality

  1464. of the church

  1465. that's in

  1466. how good their

  1467. worship team is

  1468. and how good

  1469. their child care is

  1470. and how good

  1471. the preacher is.

  1472. Those things matter

  1473. but that's not

  1474. where the true

  1475. quality of the church

  1476. is.

  1477. Because the church

  1478. isn't a worship team

  1479. a preacher

  1480. and a child care

  1481. program.

  1482. The church

  1483. is the people.

  1484. And so the quality

  1485. of the people

  1486. the quality

  1487. of the members

  1488. of the church

  1489. and their partnership

  1490. together

  1491. will determine

  1492. the quality

  1493. of the church

  1494. as a whole.

  1495. And if you're someone

  1496. and everyone

  1497. is someone

1498. who can be counted on

  1499. now we're talking

  1500. about a church

  1501. that is going

  1502. to bear a lot

  1503. of fruit together.

  1504. Number 11

  1505. avoid the illusion

  1506. of the kingdom

  1507. of God

1508. as part of your life.

  1509. Instead build

  1510. an all of life

  1511. church

  1512. okay

  1513. an all of life

  1514. life

  1515. where you're

  1516. saying

  1517. I'm going

  1518. to give

  1519. God everything

  1520. I got.

  1521. Right?

  1522. I said it before

  1523. church gets weird

  1524. when Christ

  1525. isn't your whole life.

  1526. Colossians 3 verse 4

    Colossians 3:4

  1527. says Christ

  1528. who is your life.

  1529. Okay if you ever

  1530. some of you

  1531. have had maybe

  1532. a bad experience

  1533. of church

  1534. you've got to

  1535. ask the question

  1536. was my bad

  1537. experience of church

  1538. because the church

  1539. was bad?

  1540. Which could be true.

  1541. Or was it because

  1542. Christ wasn't my life

  1543. and I tried to

  1544. fit Jesus

  1545. into my life

  1546. instead of losing

  1547. my life for Jesus

  1548. and therefore

  1549. the filter

  1550. with which

  1551. I determined

  1552. what church was

  1553. and how it was

  1554. supposed to function

  1555. was off

  1556. from the get go.

  1557. Therefore

  1558. all my church

  1559. expression

  1560. and experience

  1561. was goofy

  1562. and off

  1563. because

  1564. at the end

  1565. of the day

  1566. it wasn't

  1567. maybe as much

  1568. as that the church

  1569. was messed up

  1570. although that

1571. can be part of it

  1572. but that I

  1573. wasn't believing

  1574. and living

  1575. as if Christ

  1576. was my life.

  1577. When Christ

  1578. is your life

  1579. and the group

  1580. of people

  1581. you're meeting

  1582. with as church

  1583. Christ is their

  1584. life as well

  1585. it changes

  1586. everything.

  1587. Things are cohesive

  1588. things flow together

  1589. things function

  1590. the way they're

  1591. supposed to

  1592. when you're

  1593. just trying

  1594. to fit Christ

  1595. into your life

  1596. and you're

  1597. holding on

  1598. to your life

  1599. you lose it

  1600. you lose it

  1601. and you got

  1602. a bunch of people

  1603. gathering together

1604. in the name of church

  1605. when their life

  1606. is lost

  1607. because they don't

  1608. truly believe

  1609. and act as if

  1610. Christ is their life

  1611. who they've lost

  1612. their life for

  1613. then church gets

  1614. weird really fast.

  1615. You can determine

  1616. what that's going

  1617. to be like

  1618. in this church

  1619. you can build it

  1620. into the foundation

  1621. 1 Corinthians

  1622. 15 58

  1623. says

  1624. always

  1625. give yourselves

  1626. fully

  1627. to the work

  1628. of the Lord

  1629. how often?

  1630. Always

  1631. how much?

  1632. Fully

  1633. to what?

  1634. The work

  1635. of the Lord

  1636. 1 Corinthians

  1637. 15 58

  1638. always give

  1639. yourselves

  1640. fully

  1641. to the work

  1642. of the Lord

  1643. because

  1644. you know

  1645. that your

  1646. labor

  1647. in the Lord

  1648. is not

  1649. in vain

  1650. that's why

  1651. we always

  1652. give ourselves

  1653. that's why

  1654. we give

  1655. ourselves

  1656. fully

  1657. that's why

  1658. we give

  1659. ourselves

  1660. fully

  1661. to the work

  1662. of the Lord

  1663. why?

1664. Because your labor in the Lord won't be in vain.

  1665. It is labor.

  1666. It is work.

1667. But if we give ourselves fully,

1668. always to the work of the Lord,

1669. it won't be in vain.

1670. There's a lot of work in the name of the Lord

1671. that is vain because it's not always

  1672. and it's not fully.

1673. And at the end of the day,

1674. it's not really the work of the Lord

1675. because it's just trying to fit Jesus into our life.

1676. And God never meant it that way.

1677. And we blame God for that.

1678. We say, God, your church is a joke.

  1679. God, church sucks.

1680. And God, you haven't been faithful.

1681. When all along what it is is,

1682. no, Christianity hasn't been tried and found wanting,

1683. but wanted and not tried,

  1684. as Chesterton said.

  1685. All right?

  1686. That's the problem.

  1687. Well, I tried Christianity.

  1688. No, you didn't.

  1689. No, you didn't.

1690. You tried some selfish, consumeristic version of Christianity

1691. that was not Christianity at all.

1692. It's not that Christianity was tried

1693. and it was found wanting.

1694. It was wanted, but it was never tried

1695. because it wasn't your life.

  1696. Number 12.

  1697. Two more.

1698. Avoid closed hearts, closed homes,

  1699. and closed schedules.

1700. Build open hearts, open homes,

  1701. and open schedules.

  1702. 1 Timothy 6, 17-19 says,

1703. As for the rich in this present age,

1704. charge them not to be haughty

1705. nor to set their hopes on uncertainty of riches,

  1706. but on God.

1707. Through rich he provides us with everything to enjoy.

1708. They are to do good,

1709. to be rich in good works,

1710. to be generous and ready to share,

1711. thus storing up treasure for themselves

1712. as a good foundation for the future,

1713. so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

1714. How do you take hold of that which is truly life?

1715. You're generous and willing to share.

  1716. And if you're saying,

1717. well, that's not for me

1718. because I'm not the rich in this world.

  1719. No.

1720. If you're in this country,

  1721. you're wealthy beyond measure,

1722. and if you live in the time you do,

1723. which you do because I see you

  1724. and I know you're alive,

1725. this is the richest time in all.

1726. Kings weren't as rich as we are.

  1727. Okay?

  1728. 2 Corinthians 6, 11-13 says,

1729. We've spoken to you freely, Corinthians.

1730. Our heart is wide open.

1731. You are not restricted by us,

1732. but you are restricted in your own affections.

1733. In return, I speak as to children.

  1734. This is Paul speaking.

  1735. Widen your hearts also.

1736. And then in verse 2 he says,

1737. Make room in your hearts for us.

1738. The life, wisdom, and power of God

1739. is exchanged through open hearts.

  1740. Open hearts.

1741. Jesus dwells in your heart through faith.

1742. How do you experience Jesus together?

1743. It has to be through open hearts.

1744. And some of us have closed our hearts

1745. because we've been burned by church

1746. and we've been burned by other Christians,

1747. and we want to get help,

1748. but you can't open your...

1749. The same openness that allows you to be helped

1750. is the same openness that creates the possibility

  1751. of being hurt.

1752. You can't open yourself to be helped

1753. if you don't first open yourself to be hurt.

1754. And know that when you close your heart

  1755. to other people,

1756. it's not just the other people

1757. you're closing your heart to.

1758. You're also closing your heart to God.

1759. Because Jesus lives inside of other people

1760. and his love, wisdom, and power

1761. is exchanged through open hearts.

1762. And when you close your heart to people,

1763. you're also closing your heart to God.

1764. And at the end of the day,

1765. you have to ask the question,

  1766. can Jesus be trusted?

1767. And can he be trusted in his people?

1768. And you don't get one without the other.

1769. That's not how it works.

  1770. You can't say,

  1771. well, I just want...

  1772. Just give me Jesus.

  1773. I don't want the church.

  1774. Just give me Jesus.

  1775. I don't need the church.

1776. Take the church out of the New Testament

1777. and what do you have?

  1778. You got nothing.

1779. There's no context for all of these epistles

1780. and for the life of God

1781. in the New Testament without the church.

  1782. You can't say,

  1783. I just have Jesus.

  1784. I'm fine.

  1785. I've been wounded.

  1786. I've been hurt.

  1787. I got Jesus.

  1788. That's good enough.

  1789. You can't say that.

  1790. That's not biblical.

  1791. It's not right.

1792. It's not in any way, shape, or form

  1793. what God wanted.

  1794. Lastly, number 13.

1795. I actually think this is a strength

1796. of this church right from the get-go.

1797. And I encourage you to keep it that way.

  1798. I actually rebuked

  1799. Bellicose Church last week

  1800. because I've noticed that

1801. ever since you guys got sent out,

1802. the prayer meeting on Sunday morning

  1803. has gotten really skimpy.

1804. I showed up there the other day.

1805. I'm like, where the heck is everybody?

1806. And I realized that all the people

  1807. who were coming

1808. are the people who got sent out

  1809. for this church.

1810. And I was like, good grief.

1811. These guys need to get praying.

  1812. Those Christchurch people

1813. were the ones who were doing

  1814. all the prayer work

  1815. and now they're gone.

  1816. Who's going to pray?

  1817. Okay.

  1818. So I'm saying,

  1819. avoid low-priority prayer

  1820. and build high-priority prayer.

1821. Which I think you guys are doing.

  1822. You guys value prayer.

  1823. And there's many ways

  1824. that Bellicose has felt

1825. the loss of you guys.

1826. But one of the things

  1827. I didn't anticipate

  1828. and didn't see

  1829. but I've noticed it

1830. on those Sunday mornings is,

  1831. where'd everybody go?

  1832. And it's because it's you guys.

  1833. And that's encouraging.

  1834. Please keep that.

1835. Keep prayer as a priority.

  1836. Jim Symbolus says,

  1837. Prayer cannot be taught

  1838. by principles and seminars

  1839. and symposiums.

1840. It has to be born

1841. out of a whole environment

  1842. of felt need.

1843. If I say I ought to pray,

1844. I will soon run out

  1845. of motivation and quit.

1846. The flesh is too strong.

1847. I have to be driven to pray.

  1848. Essentially what he's saying

  1849. is Matthew 5, 3,

1850. Blessed are the poor in spirit.

1851. You have to be poor in spirit.

1852. You have to see that you're needy.

  1853. You don't pray

  1854. because you ought to.

  1855. You pray because

1856. you know that you need to.

  1857. And so, Christchurch,

  1858. keep your neediness.

1859. Let's build into the culture

  1860. a neediness in prayer.

  1861. People say,

  1862. I need God.

  1863. We sing our songs

1864. and say, I need God.

1865. We seek counsel and say,

  1866. I need God.

1867. And then we don't show up

  1868. at the prayer meeting.

1869. Let's not be a people like that.

  1870. Let's have prayer

1871. always as a high priority.

  1872. Let's make sure that

1873. his church is a house of prayer.

  1874. Okay?

1875. And you might have been,

1876. and especially all the more so,

  1877. living in a city

  1878. where all the weirdness

  1879. with IHOP

  1880. and all the stuff

  1881. that's happened there.

  1882. Listen,

1883. don't let that keep you

  1884. from praying.

1885. Don't let that burn you out

  1886. from praying.

1887. Don't let that make it

  1888. less of a priority

  1889. because some sinful behavior

1890. happened in a prominent ministry

  1891. in our city.

  1892. Don't do that.

1893. It needs to be a priority.

  1894. Amen?

  1895. Amen.

  1896. This is our opportunity

1897. to build into the culture

  1898. of this church.

  1899. Some of this stuff

1900. you've heard me say before,

1901. I'm going to keep saying it

  1902. over and over again

1903. because it's so important now

1904. to build into the culture

  1905. of our church.

  1906. Amen?

  1907. Amen.

  1908. Amen.
