  1. All right, I want to talk to you this morning about an extremely important topic for any church,

  2. but I think especially for our church, and that is the need to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit.

  3. The need to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit.

  4. I think being part of a church plant, it has, it is, and it will bring things to the surface, okay?

  5. Because there's not a whole lot of places to hide when you're in a church this size.

  6. And there's not a lot of other people to do stuff, so it puts weight on all of us.

  7. And so the combination of the proximity and the weight brings things to the surface, right?

  8. That's a, as they'd say in the coding world, that's a feature, not a bug, okay?

  9. That's a good thing.

  10. That's a good thing that our proximity brings things to the surface,

  11. and the level of shared responsibility brings things to the surface.

  12. But really, when it comes down to it, you don't need a church plant for that.

  13. You have life for that.

  14. And life itself brings things to the surface.

  15. At some point in time, all of us is faced, just like Judah was saying before we took of the Lord's table.

  16. We get to that place where there's nothing left of us.

  17. We get to that place where our work is not sufficient.

  18. Our energy is not enough.

  19. Our strength doesn't last, right?

  20. And the question is, what do you do in that moment?

  21. Where do you go in that moment?

  22. This last week was a particularly heavy week.

  23. It's been a while since I've had a week like this, but, you know, sometimes they come.

  24. And all in the same day, got one message on my phone about someone who we'd been walking with in church discipline

  25. and just seeing someone what looked like good fruit and growing.

  26. And he messaged to say that he had been actually lying to us and he was in secret sin and it was way worse than he had said.

  27. And on top of that, he started doing some other sins that he shouldn't have been doing.

  28. So I was like, okay, that's really heavy, but, you know, we'll deal with this.

  29. I think it was less than a half hour later, got another message from another person who we'd been walking with,

  30. confessing something in the darkness that was not exposed as far as sexual sin.

  31. I thought, oh, wow, okay, that's two in a row.

  32. And then a few hours later, I got a third message from another guy about some stuff,

  33. some pretty egregious sins that had come up.

  34. And three in one day.

  35. And it was right in the midst of a lot of good things that were happening,

  36. a lot of things that God was doing.

  37. And clearly the devil was attacking.

  38. I think there's been a lot of spiritual battle this last week,

  39. but I've been reminded of where to go.

  40. Because in those moments, you're tired, you're weary, you're upset, you're frustrated,

  41. you feel like you're depleted.

  42. And the question is, where do you go?

  43. And I really, I think, was focused because I've been studying this,

  44. so it was providential, to go to the Holy Spirit.

  45. And I actually, we're in the past, a week like this,

  46. I would have been probably battling discouragement all week.

  47. It was pretty much a one-day thing, and it didn't even last a whole day.

  48. Because I went to the Holy Spirit.

  49. And they said, I need to be filled by you.

  50. So when these things happen, the question is, where do you go?

  51. Okay, when you're weak, and you're lacking power, where do you go?

  52. Do you feel like in that moment, you have to consume entertainment so that you feel like you're in control?

  53. That's one of the reasons we gravitate towards entertainment, or even the entertainment,

  54. you could call it, I guess, of adult entertainment, of pornography and such,

  55. is because in those things, we have control.

  56. And you have to be aware that when you feel like you're losing control because you're feeling powerless,

  57. you'll be tempted to certain things that give you the semblance or the illusion of control.

  58. Okay?

  59. If you're not going to God.

  60. When you can't continue, when you have a lack of perseverance, where do you go?

  61. Where do you go?

  62. And you feel like, I can't keep doing this.

  63. I can't do this.

  64. I don't have the will or the energy or the strength to keep going.

  65. In those moments, where do you go?

  66. Where do you go?

  67. When you start, but you don't continue, or you say, I just can't do this,

  68. or you cancel on things or don't show up to things that you committed to because you feel like,

  69. I just can't.

  70. I just can't.

  71. Is that what you do?

  72. Do you cancel?

  73. Do you give up?

  74. Where do you go?

  75. Or do you go to the Holy Spirit?

  76. When you're in sin and you're lacking pleasure, where do you go?

  77. You feel like your pleasure tank, so to speak, is on empty.

  78. It's low.

  79. You're not feeling like you're enjoying much of anything.

  80. Where do you gravitate towards?

  81. John Piper said, sin is what you do when you're not satisfied in God.

  82. Okay?

  83. He said, spiritually satisfied people sin less.

  84. Really, that lack of pleasure is a lack of joy in God.

  85. But if your mind is distorted as to what you really want, you go drinking from cisterns that are broken.

  86. You go drinking from things that are never enough because that's not ultimately what you want.

  87. And then the devil in your flesh say, you just need more of it.

  88. You just need more.

  89. You just need more sensuality.

  90. You just need more carnal pleasure.

  91. The issue isn't what you're going to.

  92. The issue is, you don't have enough of it.

  93. And of course, that's a lie.

  94. Where do you go in that moment?

  95. Do you go to God?

  96. Do you cry out to God and say, I must find joy in you?

  97. When you're lonely, you're lacking a sense of presence.

  98. You feel like you're just kind of going through your life with no one else by your side.

  99. Maybe it's because you're single.

  100. Maybe it's because you're married and you're feeling disconnected from your spouse.

  101. Maybe it's because your friend group is changing or your friends are changing.

  102. You're changing.

  103. You don't know who's changing, but you're feeling lonely.

  104. You're feeling maybe that you have convictions that other people don't have.

  105. You have this sense of loneliness, this lack of presence.

  106. You feel alone.

  107. Where do you go?

  108. Where do you go?

  109. When you're out of order, when you're lacking priorities, okay?

  110. Do you escape from that then?

  111. You feel overwhelmed because your whole life's crashing in on you.

  112. It's like, I never feel like I'm getting ahead.

  113. I never feel like I have enough time.

  114. I never feel like I go to bed doing the things I want to do.

  115. I go to bed feeling like I was busy, but I don't really believe that I did what I was supposed to do.

  116. And it just starts, this oppressive weight starts crashing in on you.

  117. And you're feeling it on a regular basis.

  118. And it just feels like the responsibilities won't end.

  119. Where do you go?

  120. Where do you go?

  121. Do you go to God?

  122. Or do you try to escape and quasi rest in the wrong things?

  123. When you're afraid, when you're lacking boldness, when you're anxious, where do you go?

  124. Where do you go?

  125. Do you avoid those things that you're afraid of?

  126. When you know you're supposed to share the gospel, but you're afraid, do you avoid?

  127. When you know that there's things that God would have you to do and to take responsibility for, but you're anxious about them?

  128. Do you avoid them?

  129. Or do you go to God and say, God, I need your strength.

  130. I need your power.

  131. I need your boldness.

  132. When you're empty, you're feeling like you're lacking a sense of fullness.

  133. Like you just don't have enough in the tank.

  134. Where do you go?

  135. Do you fill up with other things?

  136. With food?

  137. With drink?

  138. With entertainment?

  139. With isolated fruitless consumption?

  140. Where do you go?

  141. Or do you go to God and say, God, fill me up.

  142. I want to be filled by you.

  143. You see, a lot of times when we go through life or in particular thinking about this church plant, you look at different people.

  144. And you think, oh, some people, they can handle a lot.

  145. But the question is why?

  146. Those people you see who can handle a lot, you know why they can handle a lot?

  147. If it's truly handling a lot?

  148. Because they're filled with the Spirit.

  149. Some people get burnt out.

  150. Why?

  151. Because they've not been continually filled with the Spirit.

  152. Some people in leadership, they end up lowering the standard of leadership because they've not been continually filled with the Spirit.

  153. Right?

  154. They stay in leadership, but because they're not dependent and being filled continually by the Holy Spirit, rather than going to God or getting out of leadership, they stay in leadership and lower the standard to where they're at.

  155. Some people avoid responsibility and leadership altogether because they have no category for the filling of the Spirit.

  156. And so they have to choose a life of less responsibility and less demand.

  157. Now, that's my take on it.

  158. And I think it's right.

  159. You might have other takes on it, but I want you to ask the question if they're a lie.

  160. We can make all kinds of excuses and say, oh, no, they can handle a lot because of their personality.

  161. They can handle a lot because they're stationed in life.

  162. What if that's not true?

  163. What if it's actually that the people who can handle a lot and stay steady and stay faithful are actually broken, weak people like you and I who have just been filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit?

  164. What if people who are burnt out, what if the only cause isn't just that they're doing too much or the wrong things because those are possible, but actually that a lot of people who are actually trying to do the right thing are burnt out because they went to the wrong place?

  165. They're not filled with the Holy Spirit.

  166. They're not empowered by the Holy Spirit.

  167. Yes, they love God.

  168. Yes, they're Christians.

  169. They have the Holy Spirit because no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit, but they're not empowered by the Holy Spirit or they were empowered by the Holy Spirit.

  170. And since then, they have not continually been filled.

  171. Where are you at in this?

  172. Where are you at in this?

  173. Where do you stand with this topic?

  174. Ephesians 5, 15 to 21.

  175. Ephesians 5, 15 to 21.

  176. It says,

  177. Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil.

  178. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

  179. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Holy Spirit.

  180. That's a command of God right there.

  181. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.

  182. Why would they put those two together?

  183. Essentially, getting drunk on wine is where we would go instead of going to the Holy Spirit.

  184. Getting a sense of escape or pleasure or getting a sense of feeling like I don't have to deal with these things.

  185. Rather, a sense of false comfort.

  186. Right?

  187. Rather than going to the Holy Spirit, your comforter, to be comforted, to be empowered, to be filled.

  188. Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.

  189. Give thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  190. Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

  191. Jesus said in Matthew 22, 29,

  192. He tells the Sadducees that they're wrong.

  193. And He tells them they're wrong because of two reasons.

  194. One is a reason we're probably fairly familiar with.

  195. One that we've maybe even pointed out to people.

  196. One is maybe a wrong that we don't think about as much or don't point out as much.

  197. But let's remember, Jesus is pointing this out.

  198. He's saying that these are two ways to be wrong.

  199. Matthew 22, 29, Jesus answering the Sadducees says,

  200. You are wrong.

  201. He says because.

  202. What is the reason they are wrong?

  203. Because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.

  204. So two reasons.

  205. First one is the one we would be familiar with, right?

  206. You're wrong because you don't know the Scriptures.

  207. Well, yeah, I get that, right?

  208. I mean, I've told other people maybe they're wrong.

  209. Maybe bring a little bit of correction.

  210. Like, I don't think you understand the Scriptures or you know the Scriptures there.

  211. Let me inform you of what you don't know.

  212. That's the obvious one, right?

  213. But when was the last time you have thought that you or somebody else was wrong

  214. because they didn't know the power of God?

  215. Have you ever been convicted of not knowing the Scriptures?

  216. Probably.

  217. And when that happens, what do you do?

  218. If you think, Oh, man, I don't know the Scriptures the way I should.

  219. Or in this particular instance, I was off.

  220. I didn't know what God's will was.

  221. I didn't know what God's truth was.

  222. I didn't know what God wanted in this situation.

  223. And then I went to the Scriptures or someone pointed me to the Scriptures.

  224. And so, you know, and if you feel like you're wrong, you say,

  225. Well, I'm going to go figure out what the right thing is in the Scriptures.

  226. I'm going to study the Scriptures.

  227. What about when you're wrong because you don't know the power of God?

  228. What do you do then?

  229. You need to go to the Holy Spirit and receive the power of God.

  230. You need to go to God and say, Jesus baptized me with your Spirit.

  231. Fill me with your Spirit.

  232. Okay?

  233. There's two ways to be wrong.

  234. It's not just not knowing the Scriptures.

  235. And this is very convenient for people who are cessationists.

  236. They get rid of one of the other ways that God says you can be wrong.

  237. This is God speaking.

  238. He said you can be wrong because you don't know the power of God.

  239. Let me ask you a question.

  240. I want you to be honest with yourself.

  241. Do you know the power of God?

  242. Do you know it?

  243. Some of you know the Scriptures really well.

  244. Do you know the power of God as well as you know the Scriptures?

  245. Or are you in error?

  246. Are you wrong because you don't know the power of God?

  247. You could quote chapter and verse.

  248. You know how to maybe preach a sermon or instruct some other people, give counsel.

  249. You know how to get a new church plan up and running.

  250. But let me ask an extremely important question.

  251. Do you know the power of God?

  252. If you don't, you're wrong.

  253. You're dead wrong.

  254. Well, come on, man.

  255. I know the Scriptures.

  256. I've been a Christian for a long time.

  257. I don't care what does the Scriptures say.

  258. He said they were wrong because they didn't know the power of God.

  259. If you're wrong because you don't know the power of God, where are you going to go?

  260. Maybe some of us need to repent this morning.

  261. Maybe some of us need to go to God and say,

  262. God, I have been wrong for a long time.

  263. I have not known the power of God.

  264. I have done my Christian walk in every other way but in the power of God.

  265. And I just thought it was not the best.

  266. I never actually thought of it as sin.

  267. I never ever thought of it as not being right or being wrong.

  268. Jesus said you're wrong because you neither know the Scriptures nor the power of God.

  269. This is not something we can pass over.

  270. This is not just something we say, well, that's for the charismatic.

  271. So that's for, you know, those people.

  272. You know, my friend who's like, that's all they talk about.

  273. You know, that person.

  274. I'm more of a, you know, more holistic, nuanced kind of person.

  275. Maybe you just make an excuse for being wrong.

  276. You have to know the power of God.

  277. You have to know the power of God.

  278. Paul knew the power of God.

  279. 1 Corinthians 2, 4 to 5.

  280. When speaking to the Corinthians, he said,

  281. My speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom.

  282. You might think, oh, guys, plant a church in Corinth.

  283. Of course, what they need is plausible words of wisdom.

  284. That's what they need, right?

  285. And he comes to them and says,

  286. My speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom.

  287. But actually, what they were in is in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.

  288. Demonstration of the Spirit and of power.

  289. Why?

  290. So that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

  291. Do you see why this is so important?

  292. We don't want to get people through these doors and get people into our lives as a church

  293. so that they can have more rest in the wisdom of man.

  294. But if all you do is come with plausible words of wisdom,

  295. but you don't have a demonstration of the Spirit and power, you don't know the power of God,

  296. the end result is that people don't,

  297. their faith rests in the wisdom of men, not in the power of God.

  298. That's not what we want.

  299. We're aiming to have a people whose faith rests in the power of God.

  300. How do you do that?

  301. You have to have a demonstration.

  302. You have to have a demonstration.

  303. You need a demonstration of the Spirit and power.

  304. And this is what Paul did.

  305. And I'd say, well, that's Paul.

  306. I mean, I ain't no Paul.

  307. Right.

  308. You ain't no Paul.

  309. But the same Spirit that lived in Paul is the same Spirit that lives in you.

  310. Do I need to say that again?

  311. The same Spirit that lived in Paul, let's add another one, that raised Christ from the dead, lives in you.

  312. So why can't we have a demonstration of the Spirit and power?

  313. We most certainly can.

  314. Do you believe that this morning?

  315. Do you believe that?

  316. 1 Corinthians 4, a couple chapters later, verses 19 through 20,

  317. Paul says, I'll come to you soon if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people, but their power.

  318. Speaking of these people who are dogging on Paul, saying he's not really an apostle.

  319. They're like, we're the super apostles.

  320. We're the real apostles.

  321. He says, okay.

  322. When I get there, I'm going to find out not the talk of these arrogant people.

  323. I don't care about the talk of these arrogant people.

  324. I'm actually looking to see if there's any power.

  325. For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk, but in power.

  326. Kingdom of God doesn't consist in talk, but in power.

  327. You know, people like to talk more than ever before.

  328. And I'll have people, I'll give them counsel.

  329. Had someone the other day, gave them counsel in the midst of what seems extremely obvious,

  330. I think, to anyone from the outside, that this person's life is a mess.

  331. And whatever he's doing is not accomplishing that which would bring about the fruit of the spirit

  332. and the fruit of a life, a godly life.

  333. And so I gave him counsel, which I believe is godly counsel,

  334. in which I have seen bear fruit in a lot of people's lives with powerful results.

  335. And I got this verbal diarrhea pushback about pop psychology and brain stuff and all this thing.

  336. That's just like, listen, if you study pop psychology

  337. and that leads you to God in a way that gives you the fruit of the spirit,

  338. then praise God.

  339. But if you have a bunch of talk that has no power, I will not praise God for that.

  340. Okay?

  341. That's not okay.

  342. If your talk is just talk and there's no power.

  343. Like if you have talk, but there's power with it, okay, I'm thinking,

  344. maybe this is the kingdom of God.

  345. But when all it is is talk, when all it is is talk but no power,

  346. well, it's this and it's this book I read and it's this study that happened

  347. and this video I watched on YouTube and this new preacher that I've been listening to.

  348. And you keep talking about this.

  349. You're always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.

  350. You have a form of godliness, but you deny the power.

  351. You basically, what you're doing is it's just talk.

  352. And I don't care about talk.

  353. And neither does Paul because Paul says,

  354. he then brings the definition of the kingdom of God, one of them.

  355. And he says, the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

  356. So if we're talking kingdoms, that talk better have power

  357. or that's not the kind of talk we're talking about.

  358. But it rolls right off the tongue.

  359. And it's very easy to tell other people like these guys.

  360. They're saying, Paul, Paul, you're not so great.

  361. You're not such a big deal.

  362. And he said, hey, at the end of the day, I'm not going to argue with these guys.

  363. I'm looking for one thing.

  364. He goes, I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people, but their power.

  365. Where's the power?

  366. Where's the power?

  367. Jesus said, you're an error.

  368. You don't know the power of God.

  369. Paul says, I don't care about their talk.

  370. I want to know where there's power.

  371. Paul says in 2 Timothy 3, verses 4 through 5,

    2 Timothy 3:4–5

  372. he's speaking of the end times.

  373. He says, these people will be lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.

  374. Having the appearance of godliness but denying its power.

  375. And then he says, avoid such people.

  376. Avoid such people.

  377. Now, I hope I'm making a point here by just bringing,

  378. and it's not my point, I'm just bringing up scriptures here.

  379. But are you seeing a pattern here?

  380. He's saying that if there's no power in these people,

  381. they have the appearance, which I'm assuming meant that there's some talk there.

  382. They have the look of it.

  383. Maybe they're church-going folk.

  384. They go through the motions.

  385. They're the kind of people that somewhat blend into the church culture.

  386. But he's saying there's one thing they're lacking,

  387. and this is one that you should be looking to in such a way that if it's not there,

  388. you should go so extreme that you should actually avoid such people.

  389. What is it?

  390. They have the appearance of godliness, but they are denying its power.

  391. The appearance of godliness but denying the power.

  392. Are you seeing how the Bible delineates between what we most often say is,

  393. oh, yeah, that person's a Christian.

  394. Are they?

  395. Are they?

  396. Where's the power?

  397. Where's the power?

  398. Oh, that's just some Christians.

  399. No, no, no.

  400. That is Christians.

  401. That is Christianity.

  402. He's saying if you have some kind of appearance of godliness,

  403. but you're denying the power,

  404. you should avoid such people.

  405. These people are lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.

  406. The reason they don't have any power is because they're not going to God to get their pleasure.

  407. They're going to the world to get their pleasure.

  408. And so they have a form of godliness.

  409. They kind of look the part, but they deny the power.

  410. In the quote-unquote, and I use that extremely intentionally,

  411. quote-unquote churches are filled with people like this.

  412. That's why the vast majority of Christians are not,

  413. or professing Christians, are not in fact Christians.

  414. When you just ask simple questions like,

  415. do you believe that Jesus is the only way?

  416. Do you believe that Jesus is God?

  417. Do you believe that the Bible is the word of God?

  418. God, all of a sudden, the numbers of people who profess to be Christians drops 90%.

  419. And I guarantee those people who do not believe that Jesus is the son of God,

  420. who do not believe that Jesus is the only way,

  421. and who do not believe that the Bible is the word of God,

  422. you better believe they're going to have a form of godliness that denies the power.

  423. This cannot be in Christ's church.

  424. Do you hear me on this?

  425. This is non-negotiable.

  426. We can't just go through the motions and have a nice Sunday service

  427. and do life together, enjoy food, enjoy different things in life without power.

  428. Powerless living is not an option in the church.

  429. Paul goes so far as to say, avoid such people.

  430. We must have power.

  431. And I know, because I talk to you, and I hear you,

  432. and I talk to my wife who's talking to maybe some of the ladies about going through your day

  433. and all this stuff.

  434. I know that every single one of us hits those times where we lack what?

  435. Power.

  436. Where do you go?

  437. Where do you go?

  438. Are you okay with it?

  439. Are you fine with it?

  440. Do you just chalk it up as, well, it's just a bad day,

  441. just a bad week, just a bad month, just a bad year?

  442. I don't know.

  443. Or do you say, this is unacceptable.

  444. I'm a Christian.

  445. I'm a follower of Jesus.

  446. Jesus came to do something.

  447. He came to baptize us with power.

  448. Colossians 1, 28-29, Paul says,

  449. Him we proclaim, speaking of Christ,

  450. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom,

  451. that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

  452. And then he says this,

  453. For this I toil, struggling with all His energy that He powerfully works within me.

  454. So he's struggling.

  455. He's wrestling, not with his own energy,

  456. not with his own strength,

  457. with Christ's energy.

  458. And it's not just a little drip of it.

  459. It's not just a little flash in the pan.

  460. No.

  461. That He powerfully works within me.

  462. Okay?

  463. Do you trust God for that?

  464. When you get up and you're thinking,

  465. Oh my gosh.

  466. Kids were up all night.

  467. I got to go to work today.

  468. I got to manage a home today.

  469. I'm supposed to get together with so-and-so today.

  470. I was supposed to get this done today.

  471. I got nothing left.

  472. What do you do?

  473. Do you struggle in your energy?

  474. Do you struggle in your energy?

  475. Or do you struggle with all His energy

  476. that He powerfully works within you?

  477. Do you believe that?

  478. Do you believe for Christianity like that?

  479. Do you believe that?

  480. Listen, I'm not talking about some charismatic,

  481. superficial, hallelujah Christianity.

  482. Okay?

  483. I'm not talking about, again,

  484. the charismatic form without the power.

  485. I've seen that.

  486. I've seen it.

  487. I've seen the charismatic form without the power

  488. and I've seen the charismatic form

  489. with demonic power.

  490. And they called it the power of God.

  491. Okay?

  492. I've seen it.

  493. I've experienced it.

  494. I don't want to have anything to do with that.

  495. But I most definitely want to have something to do

  496. with the charismatic power of God.

  497. I just don't want the phony baloney old-time religion.

  498. I want the real deal.

  499. I want the real deal.

  500. I want His power energizing me

  501. as I go about my day.

  502. Energizing me as I try to preach to everyone

  503. and see them become mature in Christ.

  504. That's what I need.

  505. That's what I want.

  506. Do you want that?

  507. Do you need that?

  508. Don't say you want it

  509. and don't say you need it

  510. if instead of going to God,

  511. you're going somewhere else.

  512. Prove it.

  513. Prove it with your actions.

  514. The Bible says that to repent

  515. and to prove your repentance by your actions.

  516. Okay?

  517. That's what the Bible teaches.

  518. Repentance and wisdom,

  519. the Bible says,

  520. is proved true by her actions.

  521. Okay?

  522. So we can say it all we want,

  523. but where do we go in those times?

  524. It's easy to go there

  525. when we're singing songs on a Sunday morning.

  526. We got everybody up here leading us in song.

  527. It's easy to go to Christ then.

  528. Right?

  529. It's easy to go to Christ.

  530. It's a prayer meeting.

  531. It's easy to go to Christ

  532. when everybody else is doing it.

  533. What about when you're not feeling it?

  534. What about when you're all alone?

  535. What about when your day's not going well?

  536. What about when it feels like

  537. everything is against you

  538. and the earth feels like

  539. it's subjected to futility?

  540. It is.

  541. Then where do you go?

  542. Do you take the edge off

  543. with something else,

  544. with something sinful,

  545. with something socially accepted,

  546. but a civilian affair

  547. that keeps you outside of the battle?

  548. Where do you go?

  549. Let's look at the plain reading of Scripture.

  550. Just the plain reading of Scripture.

  551. We don't need to get complicated here.

  552. It starts with the promise

  553. to be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

  554. All three synoptic Gospels

  555. and the Gospel of John.

  556. All four Gospels.

  557. They all include this.

  558. John the Baptist.

  559. He's the guy.

  560. Isaiah was prophesied about him.

  561. He said,

  562. this is the guy

  563. who's going to make straight

  564. the pass for the Lord.

  565. He's going to prepare

  566. the way for Jesus.

  567. Right?

  568. He comes.

  569. He baptizes with water.

  570. And when they come to him

  571. and he's talking to them,

  572. he begins to tell them

  573. of the one he is pointing to.

  574. He begins to tell them

  575. of the one that he is preparing

  576. the way for.

  577. And he says the same thing

  578. in all these Gospels.

  579. They all documented the same thing.

  580. And it's significant.

  581. Matthew 3.11.

  582. I'll read all of them.

  583. Matthew 3.11.

  584. I baptize you with water

  585. for repentance,

  586. John the Baptist.

  587. But he who is coming after me

  588. is mightier than I,

  589. whose sandals I am not worthy

  590. to carry.

  591. He will baptize you

  592. with the Holy Spirit

  593. and with fire.

  594. So again, baptism.

  595. We're talking like John the Baptist.

  596. People are coming out

  597. to the Jordan River

  598. and they are being immersed

  599. in water.

  600. Okay?

  601. And then he's saying,

  602. using the same language,

  603. they're being baptized

  604. by being immersed

  605. in this river.

  606. He's then used

  607. the same language

  608. to say,

  609. oh, but there's coming

  610. someone else

  611. who will baptize you

  612. in the Holy Spirit.

  613. You'll be immersed

  614. in the Holy Spirit.

  615. Mark 1.8.

  616. I have baptized you

  617. with water,

  618. but he will baptize you

  619. with the Holy Spirit.

  620. He's making the comparison.

  621. You see how I'm dunking

  622. these people in the water?

  623. You're going to be immersed

  624. in the Holy Spirit

  625. by Jesus.

  626. Luke 3.16.

  627. John answered them all,

  628. saying,

  629. I baptize you with water,

  630. but he who is mightier

  631. than I is coming.

  632. The strap of whose sandals

  633. I am not worthy

  634. to untie.

  635. He will baptize you

  636. with the Holy Spirit

  637. and fired.

  638. John 1.33.

  639. I myself did not know him,

  640. but he who sent me

  641. to baptize with water

  642. said to me,

  643. he on whom you see

  644. the Spirit descend

  645. and remain,

  646. this is he

  647. who does what?

  648. Who baptizes

  649. with the Holy Spirit.

  650. Acts,

  651. before I get to that,

  652. one more comment.

  653. clearly this is something

  654. that's for us.

  655. Clearly this is something

  656. that marks what Jesus does.

  657. We have a lot of things

  658. we think of

  659. when we think of Jesus.

  660. We think he does this,

  661. he does that,

  662. all these things.

  663. When you think of Jesus,

  664. how often do you think of him

  665. as the one who baptizes

  666. with the Holy Spirit?

  667. Who immerses people

  668. with the Holy Spirit?

  669. I'm not talking about

  670. immersing you with a feeling.

  671. I'm not talking about

  672. immersing you with some

  673. invisible force.

  674. I'm not talking about

  675. being immersed in an emotion,

  676. although emotions

  677. can accompany it

  678. and often do.

  679. I'm talking about

  680. a promise to be immersed

  681. in the person

  682. of God himself,

  683. the third person

  684. of the Trinity.

  685. We're talking about God.

  686. He's literally saying,

  687. I mean,

  688. the implications of this,

  689. it's kind of like,

  690. just picture him.

  691. Guys,

  692. do you understand

  693. what's going on here?

  694. I'm baptizing you

  695. with some created thing

  696. called water.

  697. You get wet with it,

  698. you get soaked with it,

  699. it's water.

  700. There's nothing magic

  701. about water.

  702. Everybody knows about water.

  703. There's nothing

  704. really even more common

  705. than water.

  706. Like,

  707. it's got to be one of those

  708. common things on the earth.

  709. Most of the earth is water.

  710. Most of your body is water.

  711. If you want to talk about

  712. the base level commonality,

  713. he's literally saying,

  714. I'm baptizing you

  715. with water.

  716. Now,

  717. as you think about that,

  718. let me take from the common

  719. to the supernatural

  720. and remind you,

  721. there is one coming,

  722. his name is Jesus,

  723. and he will baptize you

  724. with God himself.

  725. You will be soaked,

  726. immersed

  727. with God.

  728. Do you think of that?

  729. When you think of Jesus

  730. and you think,

  731. oh,

  732. I'm going to pray right now

  733. and there's a little,

  734. you know,

  735. crust in your eyes

  736. and you can barely read

  737. the pages of your Bible

  738. because you're not quite up yet

  739. and the coffee hasn't,

  740. you know,

  741. worked its effects yet

  742. and you're thinking,

  743. I've got to do my time

  744. with the Lord

  745. and pray this morning.

  746. Do you think,

  747. I'm going to the one

  748. who baptizes

  749. with the Holy Spirit?

  750. Do you believe that?

  751. Do you think like that?

  752. John the Baptist

  753. is telling us,

  754. listen,

  755. you have to think like this.

  756. This is,

  757. this is not some side thing

  758. about Jesus.

  759. This is what the guy

  760. who was preparing the way,

  761. I mean,

  762. there's barely anything

  763. that John the Baptist says,

  764. right?

  765. He's not documented

  766. in the scriptures

  767. as saying much,

  768. right?

  769. There's not much in there.

  770. But this is the guy

  771. who Isaiah prophesied

  772. is the guy

  773. to make way

  774. for the guy,

  775. like for the,

  776. for the Messiah.

  777. So you'd think

  778. what he has to say

  779. about him

  780. is probably

  781. pretty significant.

  782. It's probably

  783. pretty important.

  784. What does

  785. John the Baptist,

  786. the forerunner,

  787. the one prophesied

  788. by Isaiah,

  789. what is the one thing

  790. he says about Jesus?

  791. He says,

  792. he will baptize

  793. in the Holy Spirit.

  794. Is this not important?

  795. It's important.

  796. It's important.

  797. Now,

  798. just to get

  799. our terminology right

  800. when we look

  801. at the Bible,

  802. it's important to know

  803. that baptism

  804. in the Holy Spirit

  805. and filling

  806. of the Holy Spirit

  807. are synonymous.

  808. The greatest example,

  809. this is Acts 1,

    Acts 1:5

  810. verse 5.

  811. Jesus says,

  812. John baptized with water,

  813. but you will be baptized

  814. with the Holy Spirit

  815. not many days from now.

  816. Okay?

  817. So he's getting

  818. more specific.

  819. He's quoting

  820. what John said,

  821. but then he puts

  822. a time frame on.

  823. He says,

  824. hey,

  825. this is coming

  826. and it's coming

  827. not many days from now.

  828. Well,

  829. what was not many days

  830. from now?

  831. Pentecost,

  832. right?

  833. So if we go to then

  834. where it talks

  835. about Pentecost,

  836. it says,

  837. when the day of Pentecost

  838. had arrived,

  839. Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  840. they were all together

  841. in one place.

  842. Suddenly a sound

  843. like that of a violent

  844. rushing wind

  845. came from heaven

  846. and it filled

  847. the whole house

  848. where they were staying.

  849. They saw tongues

  850. like flames of fire

  851. that separated

  852. and rested

  853. on each of them

  854. and then it says,

  855. then they were all

  856. filled

  857. with the Holy Spirit

  858. and began to speak

  859. in different tongues

  860. as the Spirit

  861. enabled them.

  862. Now,

  863. wait a second.

  864. Acts 1 verse 5,

    Acts 1:5

  865. Jesus said,

  866. you will be baptized

  867. with the Holy Spirit.

  868. So you'd think then

  869. that Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  870. when that happens,

  871. they would say,

  872. and they were baptized

  873. in the Holy Spirit.

  874. That's not the language

  875. it uses.

  876. Acts chapter 2 verse 4

    Acts 2:4

  877. says they were all

  878. filled with the Holy Spirit.

  879. Are those two different things?

  880. No,

  881. it's the same thing.

  882. They're describing

  883. the same event

  884. with two different words

  885. but it's the same thing.

  886. Okay?

  887. So you can use those

  888. synonymously.

  889. You don't have to seek

  890. like these separate experiences.

  891. Just know God wants

  892. to immerse you

  893. on the outside

  894. and fill you on the inside.

  895. I think he's basically

  896. just saying like,

  897. let's get everything.

  898. You know,

  899. like,

  900. we're going to immerse you

  901. on the outside

  902. and we're going to fill you

  903. on the inside.

  904. That's what the Holy Spirit does.

  905. Okay?

  906. And one of the biggest obstacles

  907. of this

  908. is when people think,

  909. oh,

  910. you know,

  911. there's kind of three views

  912. that either,

  913. well,

  914. that's only at conversion

  915. that you get filled

  916. with the Spirit

  917. and never again.

  918. Which I think is one

  919. of the biggest hindrances

  920. to this.

  921. Others say it's at conversion

  922. but there's subsequent fillings

  923. which is similar

  924. to what the view

  925. I would have

  926. and what I'm teaching

  927. right now.

  928. But the third one

  929. is what I would view

  930. and I believe

  931. is what the Bible teaches

  932. and I'm going to show you

  933. is that it's after conversion

  934. and then there's

  935. multiple subsequent fillings.

  936. Now,

  937. that doesn't mean

  938. you don't have the Holy Spirit

  939. when you get saved.

  940. Romans 8 verse 9 says

    Romans 8:9

  941. anyone who does not

  942. have the Spirit of Christ

  943. does not belong to Him.

  944. So,

  945. let's make this totally clear.

  946. If you don't have the Spirit,

  947. you don't belong to Jesus.

  948. So,

  949. I'm not saying

  950. that when you get saved

  951. you don't have the Spirit.

  952. You most definitely

  953. have the Spirit

  954. because otherwise

  955. you don't belong to Him.

  956. And He said

  957. in 1 Corinthians 12,

  958. 3,

  959. no one can say

  960. Jesus is Lord

  961. except by

  962. the Holy Spirit.

  963. Okay?

  964. But,

  965. just because you have the Spirit

  966. doesn't mean

  967. you are filled

  968. or empowered

  969. with the Spirit.

  970. And that is

  971. a subsequent thing

  972. you will see

  973. in multiple instances.

  974. First one,

  975. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  976. The disciples

  977. were Christians.

  978. They were believers.

  979. They were converted

  980. before Pentecost.

  981. This was a subsequent filling,

  982. a subsequent baptism.

  983. Jesus called them His

  984. before

  985. the Antioch

  986. came.

  987. There's multiple instances

  988. of Jesus describing them

  989. in ways that you'd say

  990. that's most definitely

  991. describing Christians.

  992. Second,

  993. Acts chapter 8

    Acts 8:4–18

  994. verses 4 through 18.

  995. The Samaritans were saved

  996. before they received

  997. the Holy Spirit.

  998. I'll read it.

  999. Now those who were scattered

1000. went about preaching the Word.

1001. This is Acts chapter 8 verse 4.

    Acts 8:4

1002. Now those who were scattered

1003. went about preaching the Word.

  1004. Philip went down

1005. to the city of Samaria

  1006. and proclaimed to them

  1007. the Christ.

1008. And the crowds with one accord

1009. paid attention to what was

  1010. being said by Philip

  1011. when they heard him

  1012. and saw the signs

  1013. that he did.

  1014. For unclean spirits

1015. cried out with a loud voice,

  1016. came out of many

  1017. who had them

1018. and many who were paralyzed

  1019. or lame were healed.

1020. So there was much joy

  1021. in that city.

1022. But there was a man

  1023. named Simon

  1024. who had previously

  1025. practiced magic

  1026. in that city

  1027. and amazed the people

  1028. of Samaria

  1029. saying that he himself

  1030. was somebody great.

  1031. They all paid attention

1032. to him from the least

  1033. to the greatest

  1034. saying this man

1035. is the power of God

  1036. that is called great.

  1037. And they paid attention

  1038. to him because

  1039. for a long time

  1040. he had amazed them

  1041. with his magic.

  1042. Verse 12.

  1043. But when they believed

  1044. Philip as he preached

  1045. good news about

  1046. the kingdom of God

1047. in the name of Jesus Christ

  1048. they were baptized

  1049. both men and women.

  1050. Okay?

  1051. So pause there.

  1052. These guys

  1053. were converted.

  1054. Right?

1055. They heard the good news.

  1056. They heard the gospel

  1057. of the kingdom

1058. in the name of Jesus Christ

1059. and then they got baptized.

  1060. You only get baptized

  1061. if you're a Christian.

  1062. Right?

  1063. So these guys

  1064. are saved.

  1065. Even Simon himself

  1066. believed

  1067. and after being baptized

  1068. he continued with Philip

  1069. and seeing signs

  1070. and great miracles

  1071. performed

  1072. he was amazed.

  1073. Now when the apostles

  1074. at Jerusalem

  1075. heard that Samaria

  1076. had received

  1077. the word of God

  1078. they sent to them

  1079. Peter and John.

  1080. So this is clearly

  1081. afterwards

  1082. because they're

  1083. hearing

  1084. in another city

  1085. with no cars

  1086. you know

  1087. no mass transportation

  1088. that hey

  1089. some people in Samaria

  1090. got saved.

  1091. So let's send

  1092. Peter and John

  1093. to them

  1094. who came down

  1095. verse 15

  1096. and prayed for them

  1097. that they might receive

  1098. the Holy Spirit

1099. for he had not yet

1100. fallen on any of them

  1101. but they had only

  1102. been baptized

  1103. in the name

  1104. of the Lord Jesus.

  1105. Then they laid

  1106. their hands on them

  1107. and they received

  1108. the Holy Spirit.

  1109. Read the plain text

  1110. of the scripture.

1111. Could it be any more

  1112. obvious than that?

  1113. Clearly

  1114. these people were saved

  1115. had not been filled

  1116. with the Spirit.

1117. They send Peter and John

1118. they lay hands on them

  1119. it says

  1120. specifically

  1121. the Spirit

1122. had not fallen on them

  1123. but then they lay

  1124. their hands on them

  1125. and then they received

  1126. the Holy Spirit.

  1127. Clearly

  1128. this was a post

  1129. salvation

  1130. experience.

  1131. Clearly.

  1132. Third example

  1133. Acts chapter 9

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  1134. the chapter after

  1135. speaking of Paul

  1136. verse 17

  1137. to 19

  1138. Paul was converted

  1139. before he was filled

  1140. with the Holy Spirit.

  1141. He's on the road

  1142. to Damascus

  1143. he gets knocked

  1144. off his

  1145. whatever

  1146. it was a horse

  1147. or meal

  1148. whatever he's on

  1149. he gets knocked down

  1150. Jesus

  1151. confronts him

  1152. and

  1153. Paul gets converted

  1154. and then in

  1155. verse

  1156. 17

  1157. Ananias

  1158. departed

  1159. and entered

  1160. the house

  1161. and laying

  1162. his hands

  1163. on him

  1164. he said

  1165. brother Saul

  1166. the Lord Jesus

  1167. who appeared

1168. to you on the road

  1169. by which you came

  1170. has sent me

  1171. so that you may

  1172. regain your sight

  1173. and

  1174. be filled

  1175. with the Holy Spirit.

  1176. He came to

  1177. show him

  1178. he needs to get

  1179. filled with the Spirit.

  1180. This is clearly

  1181. after he was converted.

  1182. Fourth example

  1183. last one

  1184. Acts chapter 19

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  1185. 1-7

  1186. We got 12

  1187. Ephesian men here

  1188. and they believed

  1189. before the Holy Spirit

  1190. came on them.

  1191. Verse 1

  1192. It happened

  1193. that while Apollos

  1194. was at Corinth

  1195. Paul passed

  1196. through the inland

  1197. country

  1198. and came to Ephesus

  1199. There he found

  1200. some

  1201. disciples

  1202. and he said

  1203. to them

  1204. Did you receive

  1205. the Holy Spirit

  1206. when you believed?

  1207. Funny question

  1208. to ask

  1209. if you don't

  1210. get the Spirit

  1211. or

  1212. it's a funny

  1213. question to ask

  1214. if it happens

  1215. at the same time

1216. then why would you ask?

  1217. Did you receive

  1218. the Holy Spirit

  1219. when you believed?

  1220. If the Holy Spirit

  1221. if you're filled

  1222. with the Holy Spirit

  1223. when you believed

  1224. that's a dumb question

  1225. okay

  1226. Did you receive

  1227. the Holy Spirit

  1228. when you believed?

  1229. And they said

  1230. No

  1231. We have not

  1232. even heard

  1233. that there is

  1234. the Holy Spirit

  1235. and he said

  1236. Into what then

  1237. were you baptized?

  1238. They said

  1239. into John's baptism

  1240. Paul said

  1241. John baptized

  1242. with the baptism

  1243. of repentance

  1244. telling people

  1245. to believe

  1246. in the one

  1247. who has come

  1248. after him

  1249. that is Jesus

  1250. On hearing this

  1251. they were baptized

  1252. in the name

  1253. of the Lord Jesus

  1254. okay

  1255. so

  1256. getting a little

  1257. correction there

  1258. getting the full story

  1259. there

  1260. they get baptized

  1261. again

  1262. but this time

  1263. in the name

  1264. of the Lord Jesus

  1265. then after that

  1266. Paul lays his hands

  1267. on them

  1268. the Holy Spirit

  1269. came on them

  1270. and they began

  1271. speaking in tongues

  1272. and prophesying

  1273. there are about

  1274. twelve men in all

  1275. so after they're saved

  1276. they

  1277. have hands

  1278. laid on them

  1279. the Holy Spirit

  1280. comes on them

  1281. and they began

  1282. speaking in tongues

  1283. and prophesying

  1284. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  1285. once wrote

  1286. There is nothing

  1287. I'm convinced

  1288. that so quenches

  1289. the Spirit

  1290. as the teaching

  1291. which identifies

  1292. the baptism

  1293. of the Holy Spirit

  1294. with regeneration

  1295. or new birth

  1296. he says

  1297. you got it all

  1298. well if you have

  1299. got it all

  1300. I simply ask

1301. in the name of God

  1302. why are you

  1303. as you are

1304. if you've got it all

  1305. why are you

  1306. so unlike

  1307. New Testament Christians

  1308. you got it all

1309. got it at your conversion

  1310. well where is it

  1311. I ask

  1312. in the same way

  1313. I would ask

  1314. what I was asking

  1315. before

  1316. where's the power

  1317. where's the power

  1318. we have to think

  1319. biblically about this

  1320. you have to think

  1321. in biblical language

  1322. and you're praying

  1323. you're trying to get

  1324. in faith about this

  1325. think in the language

  1326. of the Bible

  1327. the Bible says

  1328. the Holy Spirit

  1329. was poured out

  1330. think of water

  1331. being poured out

  1332. from above

  1333. the Holy Spirit

  1334. is poured out

1335. speaks of the Holy Spirit

  1336. falling

  1337. so the Holy Spirit

  1338. is poured out

  1339. the Holy Spirit

  1340. falls on us

  1341. those then

  1342. who the Holy Spirit

  1343. falls on

  1344. are baptized

  1345. so poured out

  1346. falling

  1347. and then immersed

  1348. in the Holy Spirit

  1349. while you're being

  1350. immersed

  1351. you're also

  1352. being filled

  1353. so it's not just

  1354. that you're being

  1355. soaked and immersed

  1356. on the outside

  1357. you're being filled

  1358. on the inside

  1359. or as it says

  1360. in John chapter 7

    John 7 chapter mention

  1361. and 1 Corinthians 12

  1362. you're drinking

  1363. of the Spirit

  1364. so you're drinking

  1365. in that which is

  1366. falling on you

  1367. being poured out

  1368. on you

  1369. which you're being

  1370. baptized into

  1371. you're also now

  1372. being filled with

  1373. and drinking

  1374. of the Spirit

1375. and rivers of the Spirit

  1376. are flowing

  1377. out of your heart

  1378. and which you could

  1379. say then

  1380. is your mouth

  1381. speaking

  1382. because the mouth

  1383. speaks

  1384. according to Luke

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  1385. chapter 6

  1386. from the overflow

  1387. of your heart

  1388. this is why

  1389. they would speak

  1390. in tongues

  1391. and prophesy

  1392. spirits being poured

  1393. out

  1394. spirit is falling

  1395. it's hitting them

  1396. in such a way

  1397. that they are

  1398. immersed in it

  1399. baptized in it

  1400. they are drinking

  1401. of the Spirit

  1402. and they are filled

  1403. with the Spirit

1404. and then out of their heart

  1405. rivers of living water

  1406. are flowing

  1407. which he's speaking

  1408. of as the Spirit

  1409. which then come

  1410. out of your mouth

  1411. which is why

  1412. they would worship God

  1413. and why they would

  1414. speak in tongues

  1415. and why they would

  1416. prophesy

  1417. because that's what

  1418. happens

  1419. when you are filled

  1420. with the Spirit

  1421. and when you are

  1422. filled with the joy

  1423. of the Spirit

1424. do you think of it

  1425. in that language

  1426. again that's all

  1427. that's not

  1428. none of that's my

  1429. language

  1430. that's Acts 2

  1431. it's Acts 10

  1432. that's all those

  1433. verses in the Gospels

  1434. it's John 7

  1435. 1 Corinthians 12

  1436. Luke 6

  1437. this is all Bible

  1438. language

  1439. it's all Bible

  1440. language

  1441. build your faith

  1442. with it

  1443. what is the evidence

  1444. of it

  1445. how do you know

  1446. this is an important

  1447. point

  1448. Acts 2

  1449. 33

  1450. being therefore

  1451. exalted

  1452. at the right hand

  1453. of God

  1454. and having received

  1455. from the Father

  1456. the promise

  1457. of the Holy Spirit

  1458. he has poured out

  1459. this

  1460. that you yourselves

  1461. are

  1462. seeing

  1463. and hearing

  1464. okay

  1465. this whole thing

  1466. of not knowing

  1467. whether you've been

  1468. filled with the Spirit

  1469. it doesn't make

  1470. any sense

  1471. biblically

  1472. when people got

  1473. filled with the Spirit

  1474. it was definitive

  1475. it wasn't a question

  1476. it wasn't

  1477. I don't know

  1478. don't know if I've been

  1479. filled

1480. you don't hear any of

  1481. that in the Bible

  1482. that language

  1483. about the Holy Spirit

  1484. and infilling

  1485. does not exist

  1486. in the Bible

  1487. if you don't know

  1488. you probably haven't

  1489. been filled

  1490. or you don't understand

  1491. what it looks like

  1492. to be filled

  1493. okay

  1494. because

  1495. there's something

  1496. demonstrable

  1497. you see

  1498. a difference

  1499. you hear

  1500. a difference

  1501. something is there

  1502. to confirm it

  1503. now sometimes

  1504. it's tongues

  1505. doesn't always

  1506. have to be tongues

  1507. it was at Pentecost

  1508. was in multiple

  1509. other times

  1510. okay

  1511. but not everybody

  1512. has to speak

  1513. in tongues

  1514. sometimes it's prophecy

  1515. Joel 2

  1516. says when

  1517. I will pour out

  1518. my spirit

  1519. and when I pour

  1520. out my spirit

  1521. one of the things

  1522. that will show

  1523. is that people

  1524. will prophesy

  1525. I was telling someone

  1526. the other day

  1527. when I was a younger

  1528. man

  1529. I went to

1530. kind of a missions trip

  1531. to Juarez

  1532. in El Paso

  1533. Texas

  1534. and we had

  1535. an all night

  1536. prayer meeting

  1537. one night there

  1538. and God poured

  1539. out his spirit

  1540. on us

  1541. so that a group

  1542. of us

  1543. who were only

  1544. supposed to

  1545. take one shift

  1546. ended up

  1547. staying up

  1548. the whole night

  1549. and prophesying

  1550. over every group

  1551. that came in

  1552. I've never

  1553. experienced

  1554. anything like that

  1555. since

  1556. all I can say

  1557. and I have no

  1558. explanation for it

  1559. because I'm not

  1560. prophetically gifted

  1561. even

  1562. but I prophesied

  1563. over people

  1564. all night

  1565. that night

  1566. and so did

  1567. all the other

  1568. people in that

  1569. group

  1570. what was it

  1571. it was an outpouring

  1572. of the Holy Spirit

  1573. it was

  1574. it was awesome

  1575. it was so fun

  1576. what was that

  1577. that was

  1578. there was evidence

  1579. we were crying out

  1580. for God to pour

  1581. to the spirit

  1582. he did

  1583. and then we

  1584. prophesied

  1585. all night

  1586. okay

  1587. the evidence

  1588. is also power

  1589. gifts

  1590. Luke 24

  1591. 49

  1592. Jesus said

  1593. stay in the city

  1594. until you are

  1595. clothed with power

  1596. from on high

  1597. he said

  1598. I'm sending you

  1599. the promise

  1600. of my father

  1601. upon you

  1602. stay there

  1603. until you

  1604. are clothed

  1605. with power

  1606. okay

  1607. Acts 1 verse 8

    Acts 1:8

  1608. you will receive

  1609. this power

  1610. when the Holy Spirit

  1611. has come upon you

  1612. you will receive power

  1613. stay there

  1614. until you are

  1615. clothed with power

  1616. you might say

  1617. well yeah

  1618. I have been

  1619. filled with the spirit

  1620. do you have power

  1621. no

  1622. you have not been

  1623. baptized with the spirit

  1624. filled with the spirit

  1625. you will notice power

  1626. power to do things

  1627. you couldn't do before

  1628. you will notice

  1629. and that can manifest

  1630. in multiple ways

  1631. okay

  1632. one of the

  1633. very specific ways

  1634. that it manifests

  1635. is in boldness

  1636. Peter denied Christ

1637. gets filled with the spirit

1638. and then what does he do

  1639. gets very bold

  1640. like wait

  1641. like night and day

1642. like is this the same guy

  1643. isn't it the guy

  1644. who was denying

  1645. at the fire

  1646. now this guy's preaching

  1647. that we killed

  1648. the author of life

  1649. that's the same guy

  1650. same guy

  1651. one was filled

  1652. with the spirit

  1653. one was not

  1654. okay

  1655. Acts

  1656. uh

  1657. Acts 1

  1658. it says when he

  1659. confronted the people

  1660. that day

  1661. in Acts 4

  1662. it says Peter

  1663. filled with the

  1664. Holy Spirit

  1665. how they know

1666. he's filled with the spirit

  1667. because of how bold

  1668. he was speaking

  1669. in fact everyone

  1670. noticed

  1671. in verse 13

  1672. chapter 4

  1673. it says

  1674. when they saw

  1675. the boldness

  1676. of Peter

  1677. and John

  1678. and perceived

  1679. that they were

  1680. uneducated

  1681. common men

  1682. they were astonished

  1683. and they recognized

  1684. that they had been

  1685. with Jesus

  1686. Acts 4

  1687. 31

  1688. when they had prayed

  1689. the place in which

  1690. they were gathered

  1691. together was shaken

  1692. and they were all

1693. filled with the Holy Spirit

  1694. and continued to speak

  1695. the word of God

  1696. with

  1697. boldness

  1698. another evidence

  1699. that you become

  1700. his witnesses

  1701. Acts 1

    Acts 1:8

  1702. verse 8

  1703. when the Holy Spirit

  1704. comes on you

1705. you will be my witnesses

  1706. you will witness

  1707. on behalf of Jesus

  1708. you will have boldness

  1709. to preach the gospel

  1710. you will testify

1711. of the greatness of Jesus

1712. and you won't be afraid

  1713. another example

  1714. Acts 13

  1715. 52

  1716. the disciples

  1717. were filled with joy

1718. and with the Holy Spirit

  1719. accompanying the filling

  1720. of the Holy Spirit

  1721. is joy

  1722. talked to a couple

  1723. people this week

  1724. they said

  1725. a few people

  1726. this last week

  1727. they said

  1728. I have to confess

  1729. my Christianity

  1730. has been one

1731. that has not had joy

1732. said you need to be

  1733. filled with the Spirit

  1734. when you are filled

  1735. with the Spirit

1736. you are filled with joy

  1737. Romans 15

  1738. 13

  1739. says

1740. may the God of hope

1741. fill you with all joy

  1742. and peace

  1743. in believing

1744. so that by the power

  1745. of the Holy Spirit

1746. you may abound in hope

  1747. one of the ways

  1748. this power manifests

  1749. in your life

  1750. is that you abound

  1751. in hope

  1752. so much so

  1753. that you have joy

  1754. that's what abounding

  1755. in hope is

  1756. abounding in hope

  1757. is when God's power

  1758. overcomes all the power

  1759. of your negativity

  1760. and your bad experiences

  1761. and all your hurts

  1762. and all your life

  1763. that's gone wrong

1764. the power of the Holy Spirit

  1765. gives you abounding hope

  1766. which manifests itself

  1767. in joy

  1768. and that joy

  1769. is power

  1770. because

  1771. Nehemiah 8.10

1772. says the joy of the Lord

  1773. is your strength

  1774. lastly

  1775. one of the evidences

1776. of being filled with the Spirit

  1777. is your countenance changes

  1778. when Stephen got filled

  1779. with the Spirit

  1780. they said his face

  1781. looks like the face

  1782. of an angel

  1783. sometimes you can actually

1784. see a difference in people

1785. you don't look the same

1786. you don't look the same

  1787. what happened to you

  1788. I think I got filled

  1789. with the Spirit

1790. you get filled with the Spirit

  1791. so many different ways

1792. I've gotten filled with the Spirit

  1793. worshipping the Lord

  1794. many often times

  1795. I've worshipped the Lord

1796. and I get filled up

  1797. I feel the Spirit

  1798. reading a biography

  1799. of D.L. Moody

1800. I got filled with the Spirit

1801. at an all night prayer meeting

  1802. and started prophesying

  1803. like I said

  1804. I've gotten filled

  1805. with the Spirit

  1806. in my car

  1807. driving alone

1808. and started speaking in tongues

  1809. for the first time

1810. on a trip to Walmart

  1811. right

1812. like that's the first time

  1813. I spoke in tongues

  1814. there's no place

  1815. this is for everybody

  1816. he said

  1817. this is for

  1818. it's for you

  1819. it's for your children

1820. for all who are far off

  1821. and everyone

1822. whom the Lord our God

  1823. calls to himself

  1824. Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1825. this is for everyone

  1826. this can happen anywhere

1827. so what do you do

  1828. last thing

1829. I'm wrapping this up here

  1830. hang with me

  1831. what do you do

  1832. if you're saying

  1833. Josh you're right

  1834. I lack power

  1835. Josh you're right

1836. I need to be filled

  1837. Josh I'm hearing you

  1838. I hear what you're saying

  1839. I'm convicted

  1840. I go everywhere else

  1841. but I don't go for the

1842. I don't go to the Holy Spirit

  1843. but I want to

1844. I want to show you

  1845. what you do

  1846. the Bible's very clear

  1847. on this

  1848. okay

  1849. four things

  1850. number one

  1851. you thirst

  1852. you gotta thirst

  1853. okay

1854. God wants to fill up

  1855. the thirsty people

1856. this is John chapter 7

    John 7 chapter mention

  1857. Jesus stood up

  1858. and cried out

  1859. if anyone thirsts

1860. let him come to me

  1861. and drink

  1862. and he says this

  1863. as he was speaking

  1864. of the spirit

1865. from rivers of living water

1866. would flow out of them

  1867. you gotta thirst

  1868. you gotta

  1869. you gotta say

  1870. God I need you

  1871. I need you

  1872. like this other stuff

  1873. isn't enough

  1874. I need you God

  1875. I'm thirsty

  1876. it ain't doing it

  1877. it ain't cutting it

  1878. I can't keep going

  1879. like this

  1880. God I'm thirsty

  1881. I need you

  1882. number two

  1883. if you're thirsty

1884. then you do what you do

  1885. when you're thirsty

  1886. you ask for drink

  1887. you ask

  1888. okay

  1889. when he speaks

  1890. in Luke chapter 11

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  1891. he says

  1892. I tell you

  1893. ask

1894. and it'll be given to you

  1895. seek

  1896. and you will find

  1897. knock

1898. and it'll be open to you

  1899. for everyone who asks

  1900. receives

  1901. the one who seeks

  1902. finds

  1903. the one who knocks

  1904. will be open

  1905. what father

  1906. on father's day

  1907. listen

  1908. what father among you

1909. if his son asks for a fish

1910. will instead of a fish

  1911. give him a servant

  1912. a serpent

1913. or if he asks for an egg

1914. will give him a scorpion

  1915. if you then

  1916. who are evil

1917. know how to give good gifts

  1918. to your children

  1919. how much more

  1920. will the heavenly father

  1921. give the holy spirit

  1922. to those who ask

1923. why did he throw that in there

  1924. he wasn't talking about

  1925. the holy spirit

1926. I love that he did

1927. because do you ever go to God

1928. thinking oh he's not going

1929. to give me a spirit

  1930. I don't deserve a spirit

1931. I did too many things wrong

1932. this that or the other

  1933. I'm not good enough

1934. I'm not like so and so

  1935. I'm not a charismatic personality

1936. you come up with all the excuses

1937. why he's not going to give you

  1938. the spirit

  1939. and then Luke 11 13 says

1940. if you know how to give good gifts

  1941. to your children

  1942. how much you know

1943. if you read your father's day

  1944. card from someone

  1945. and they thanked you

  1946. and you think

  1947. oh yeah

  1948. I give good gifts

  1949. to my kids

1950. if you give good gifts

  1951. to your kids

  1952. how much more

  1953. will the heavenly father

  1954. give the holy spirit

1955. to those who ask him

  1956. you gotta ask

  1957. you gotta ask

1958. when you're in that place

  1959. do you ask

  1960. number three

  1961. you gotta believe

  1962. when you ask

  1963. Galatians 3 2-6

1964. says let me ask you this

1965. did you receive the spirit

1966. by works of the law

1967. or by hearing with faith

  1968. are you so foolish

1969. having begun by the spirit

1970. are you now being perfected

  1971. by the flesh

1972. did you suffer so many things

  1973. in vain

1974. if indeed it was in vain

  1975. does he who supplies

  1976. the spirit

  1977. to you

  1978. and works miracles

  1979. among you

1980. do so by works of the law

  1981. or

  1982. by hearing with faith

  1983. by hearing with faith

  1984. you gotta combine

  1985. your asking

  1986. with faith

  1987. otherwise you're a double man

  1988. and you shouldn't think

  1989. you receive anything

  1990. from the Lord

  1991. says in James 1

  1992. gotta ask and believe

1993. that God wants to fill you

  1994. and that he will

  1995. Galatians 3

  1996. 13-14

  1997. Christ redeemed us

1998. from the curse of the law

1999. by becoming a curse for us

  2000. for it is written

  2001. cursed is everyone

2002. who is hanged on a tree

2003. so that in Christ Jesus

  2004. the blessing of Abraham

2005. might come to the Gentiles

2006. so that we might receive

  2007. the promised spirit

  2008. through

  2009. faith

  2010. yes

  2011. and lastly

2012. last point of how we can

  2013. receive the spirit

  2014. Acts 5-32

2015. he gave the Holy Spirit

  2016. the Holy Spirit

  2017. whom God has given

2018. to those who obey him

  2019. okay

  2020. now you're saying

  2021. well that contradicts

  2022. what you said before

  2023. I thought you said

  2024. I don't have to be perfect

  2025. you don't

  2026. because then nobody

2027. would get the Holy Spirit

  2028. but he's saying

2029. he gives the Holy Spirit

2030. to those who obey him

  2031. who are not someone

2032. who are hiding in sin

2033. and trying to make excuses

  2034. for their sin

  2035. there's someone who's

  2036. legitimately not making

  2037. a habit of sin

2038. they're not continuing in sin

  2039. when they're knowledgeable

  2040. of their sin

  2041. they repent

  2042. there are people

  2043. marked by obedience

  2044. there's no such thing

  2045. as a Christian

  2046. who's perfect

  2047. but there is Christians

2048. who are marked by obedience

  2049. and Christians who are

  2050. playing games

  2051. and listen

2052. it's not just the spirit

2053. he's called the Holy Spirit

2054. and he gives the Holy Spirit

  2055. to those who obey

  2056. because he is holy

2057. and he will not share

  2058. his glory with another

  2059. lastly

2060. laying hands on one another

  2061. is another

2062. I forgot about that one

  2063. laying hands

  2064. is another real practical

2065. one you see in the Bible

2066. can you stand with me

  2067. for a second here

  2068. in closing

  2069. I'd like to pray

2070. I know this was long

  2071. I apologize

2072. but we need the Holy Spirit

2073. we need the Holy Spirit

  2074. okay

  2075. we have tasks

2076. that are too large for us

2077. one of them is this church plant

2078. let me just give you

  2079. a really encouraging word

2080. you and I cannot do this

  2081. can't do it

2082. we can't pull it off

  2083. we can start off

  2084. thinking like we can

2085. making sure all the tasks

  2086. are taken care of

  2087. the communion table's ready

  2088. and someone leads us

  2089. in worship

  2090. and make sure someone's

  2091. you know

2092. leading in the Lord's table

  2093. and preaching every week

2094. and that we have a building

  2095. to meet in

2096. and maybe we get a better building

2097. and we can make sure

  2098. all that stuff

  2099. but listen

2100. you can't pull this off

2101. and I can't pull it off either

  2102. there's only one person

  2103. who builds this church

  2104. ultimately

  2105. that's Jesus

2106. and he's the one who baptizes

  2107. with the Spirit

2108. and so I would like to

  2109. close this in prayer

  2110. and I believe

2111. God wants to fill us

  2112. on this Father's Day

  2113. why not go to

  2114. the Father

2115. who gives the Holy Spirit

  2116. how much more

2117. will he give the Holy Spirit

  2118. to those who ask

2119. and let's ask for him

2120. to pour out his Spirit upon us

2121. can we do that right now

  2122. in closing

  2123. through the Holy Spirit
