  1. I want to talk to you this morning about missional discipline.

  2. Missional discipline.

  3. Because this is a church plant, you don't get the luxury of not thinking like a missionary.

  4. In a church plant, everyone must act and think like a missionary.

  5. Because kind of like what Seth was talking about a couple weeks ago,

  6. where maybe when you're a part of a bigger church,

  7. you can rely on part of the healthier, more established parts of the church

  8. and not realize whether or not you're actually doing those things

  9. or pulling from the right sources.

  10. You can't do that anymore when you're in a smaller church.

  11. The props are pulled out from underneath you.

  12. There's no one else who's going to do it if you don't.

  13. And for a church to be established and for a church to grow,

  14. there's no one to farm it out, no one you can farm out mission to.

  15. Like, well, if I don't do it, they'll do it.

  16. Who?

  17. Who's going to do that?

  18. You know, look around.

  19. You're looking at it.

  20. You can't say, oh, somebody else will do that.

  21. That is a church that will not get off the ground.

  22. That is a church that will not really reach people.

  23. And I know that you all have a sincere desire to reach people for the gospel.

  24. But your sincere desire to reach people for the gospel,

  25. although admirable, is not going to cut it.

  26. Desire isn't going to get you anywhere alone.

  27. Desire alone will not get you anywhere.

  28. It must be accompanied with missional action,

  29. and I would say even more specifically missional discipline.

  30. And I'll explain that in a second.

  31. But let's just ask the question.

  32. And don't laugh.

  33. If Raytown were a foreign city,

  34. it may feel that way sometimes,

  35. but if Raytown were a foreign city,

  36. and you just got sent here as a missionary,

  37. what would you do?

  38. Okay?

  39. Like if this was like a foreign country,

  40. and you got plopped into this foreign country in America,

  41. and this wasn't your home country,

  42. and Raytown was the city you got plopped into,

  43. okay?

  44. But you speak the same language, okay?

  45. What would you do to establish a church?

  46. How would you spend your time?

  47. Where would your focus be?

  48. How would you plan?

  49. What would you prioritize?

  50. This isn't hypothetical.

  51. Do you understand what I'm saying?

  52. Like that sounds like a hypothetical question,

  53. because in one sense you didn't get plopped here,

  54. but in another sense,

  55. by God's sovereign will,

  56. you are plopped here for a purpose,

  57. to establish his kingdom on the earth,

  58. through the church,

  59. by making disciples of those who don't know Jesus, okay?

  60. And so you must think that way.

  61. And that's not just for the apostolic leader

  62. to think that way,

  63. although he should be the tip of the arrow.

  64. We all have to think that way.

  65. And you'd say,

  66. well, I don't know if I want to think that way.

  67. Sorry, if you're a part of the church,

  68. you have to.

  69. You have to.

  70. That's not an option.

  71. You're a part of a church plant?

  72. Not an option.

  73. You have to think that way.

  74. You have to be someone

  75. who is willing to embrace

  76. building something from nothing.

  77. This is your task.

  78. Should you accept it?

  79. Okay?

  80. It is a mission that seems impossible, right?

  81. Right?

  82. That you are building something that doesn't exist.

  83. You can't see it.

  84. Okay?

  85. You're building,

  86. you're not taking materials that exist

  87. and then building something from those materials.

  88. The apostolic task

  89. is to build something

  90. from nothing.

  91. And that's what you signed up for.

  92. Here you are.

  93. Here we are.

  94. Okay?

  95. My main text is from 1 Corinthians 9,

  96. 19 to 27.

  97. 1 Corinthians 9, 19 to 27.

  98. Paul says,

  99. For though I am free from all,

  100. I have made myself a servant to all,

  101. that I might win more of them.

  102. To the Jews I became a Jew

  103. in order to win the Jews.

  104. To those under the law,

  105. I became as one under the law,

  106. though not being myself under the law,

  107. that I might win those under the law.

  108. To those outside the law,

  109. I became as one outside the law,

  110. not being outside the law of God,

  111. but under the law of Christ,

  112. that I might win those outside the law.

  113. To the weak,

  114. I became weak,

  115. that I might win the weak.

  116. I have become all things

  117. to all people,

  118. that by all means,

  119. I might save some.

  120. I do it all for the sake of the gospel,

  121. that I may share with them

  122. in its blessings.

  123. Do you not know that in a race

  124. all the runners run,

  125. but only one receives the prize?

  126. So run that you may obtain it.

  127. Every athlete exercises self-control

  128. in all things.

  129. They do it to receive a perishable wreath,

  130. but we an imperishable.

  131. So I do not run aimlessly.

  132. I do not box as one beating the air,

  133. but I discipline my body

  134. and keep it under control,

  135. lest after preaching to others,

  136. I myself should be disqualified.

  137. So the title of my sermon,

  138. Missional Discipline,

  139. comes from that last verse.

  140. I discipline my body

  141. is his conclusion

  142. from all the stuff he said before.

  143. Let's look at this a little bit.

  144. Okay?

  145. He said,

  146. though he's free from all,

  147. he made himself a servant to all.

  148. All right?

  149. So he,

  150. though he doesn't have to be restricted,

  151. he voluntarily restricts himself

  152. for a specific purpose

  153. that is higher.

  154. What is it?

  155. That he might win more.

  156. That he might win more souls.

  157. Okay?

  158. If you want to win souls,

  159. there's a sense of restricting

  160. missional discipline

  161. that must take place.

  162. Okay?

  163. Where we restrict ourselves

  164. from legitimate pleasures

  165. of this world,

  166. legitimate ways of using our time,

  167. legitimate things

  168. for the greater things

  169. of seeing people come into the kingdom.

  170. This task of mission

  171. requires us to give up

  172. things that aren't bad

  173. in and of themselves.

  174. Clearly,

  175. you should give up sin.

  176. Clearly,

  177. you should give up

  178. the deeds of the flesh,

  179. this kind of thing.

  180. Okay?

  181. But Paul's talking about

  182. something altogether different here.

  183. Paul is saying,

  184. though I'm free from all,

  185. I've made myself a servant to all.

  186. Voluntary restriction.

  187. Voluntary servitude

  188. that I might win more of them.

  189. And then he goes on to say,

  190. I become like all these

  191. different groups of people.

  192. Jews,

  193. Gentiles,

  194. under the law,

  195. not under the law.

  196. He's the weak.

  197. He's becoming like all these people

  198. in order to win them.

  199. Okay?

  200. And then he makes that

  201. amazing statement

  202. in verse 22

  203. that I just,

  204. is like the quintessential

  205. mission statement.

  206. You don't get any more

  207. quintessential than this.

  208. I have become

  209. all things

  210. to all people.

  211. It's the first thing he says.

  212. Okay?

  213. What are you becoming?

  214. Since joining this church plant,

  215. we're almost three,

  216. after the end of this week,

  217. we'll be three months in

  218. from when we launched

  219. those two missional communities

  220. that we deem to be

  221. the official launch

  222. of our church on May 1st.

  223. Okay?

  224. So we're three months in.

  225. Let me ask you the question.

  226. What are you becoming

  227. to reach people?

  228. Now,

  229. Paul had specific people.

  230. He's like,

  231. okay,

  232. I got Jews I'm on mission to.

  233. I got Gentiles I'm on mission to.

  234. I got those under the law.

  235. I got those outside the law.

  236. I got the weak.

  237. He had specific people groups

  238. that he was reaching out to.

  239. What's yours?

  240. Where's your mission at?

  241. Who are you targeting?

  242. Who are you specifically

  243. praying for,

  244. reaching out?

  245. And then what are you doing?

  246. What are you becoming

  247. to reach them?

  248. He said,

  249. I've become all things

  250. for some people.

  251. No,

  252. he says to all people.

  253. That's why he lists

  254. all these groups.

  255. He's like,

  256. whatever it takes,

  257. whatever group of people

  258. that God has put before me,

  259. I'll become all things

  260. to all people.

  261. That by all means,

  262. okay,

  263. whatever means

  264. that needs to be deployed,

  265. he's saying,

  266. I'm in.

  267. I'm in.

  268. If there's a means

  269. that needs to be deployed,

  270. I will deploy it

  271. that I might save some.

  272. That's the goal,

  273. that I might save some.

  274. And then he says,

  275. I do it all for the sake

  276. of the gospel,

  277. that I may share with them

  278. in its blessings.

  279. Wouldn't you like to share

  280. with lost people

  281. in the blessings

  282. of going from darkness

  283. to light,

  284. from being lost

  285. to being found?

  286. That's your goal,

  287. that's your vision

  288. for the sake of the gospel,

  289. that Jesus would be glorified

  290. through the saving of souls.

  291. That's the vision

  292. that we have.

  293. If that doesn't captivate you,

  294. you won't become

  295. all things to all men

  296. that you might win as many.

  297. If you're not captivated,

  298. if you're not energized,

  299. if you're not smitten

  300. by what Judah was just saying

  301. as we took of the Lord's table together,

  302. if that isn't real to you,

  303. if that's not a present enjoyment to you,

  304. if singing songs to Jesus

  305. is kind of like a downer to you,

  306. it's kind of like,

  307. let's just get this over with.

  308. If you're not enjoying the Lord

  309. on a regular basis

  310. and enjoying who he is

  311. and what he's done for you,

  312. if you're not enjoying

  313. the person of Jesus

  314. and the work of Jesus,

  315. then why in the world

  316. would you become all things

  317. to all men

  318. that by all means

  319. you could win some?

  320. Why would you do that?

  321. You wouldn't.

  322. He's doing it

  323. because he wants to save people

  324. and he's doing it

  325. for the sake of the gospel.

  326. For the sake of the gospel.

  327. I think that the first message

  328. I preached at this church

  329. was doing it

  330. for the sake of the gospel.

  331. Are we in on that?

  332. And if you are,

  333. then it looks a certain way

  334. with your actions.

  335. And he brings up,

  336. it just happens to be

  337. that the Olympics have started.

  338. Not necessarily advocating

  339. you watch it.

  340. Maybe if you watch the races

  341. and avoid the opening ceremonies.

  342. But typically we might watch

  343. a race or two

  344. from the Olympics, right?

  345. And they all run.

  346. But all these people

  347. are the greatest runners

  348. in the entire planet.

  349. And they're coming to race.

  350. And they have gone

  351. into strict training

  352. for years preceding the Olympics.

  353. For years.

  354. Years of training.

  355. Full-time.

  356. Full-time training for years.

  357. All to get a prize

  358. that won't last.

  359. All to get a medal

  360. that people will forget about.

  361. All to get accolades

  362. and notoriety

  363. that will soon fade away.

  364. And most certainly fade away

  365. once they're gone.

  366. And they do all that.

  367. And we applaud them for it.

  368. We watch them for it.

  369. Advertising dollars

  370. come into the commercials

  371. because people watch it.

  372. Okay?

  373. People watch this.

  374. They're excited by it.

  375. Because we love to see people

  376. giving their all for something.

  377. This is for a race.

  378. This is for, you know,

  379. 30 seconds sometimes, you know.

  380. These shorter races.

  381. And that's it.

  382. And that's what they're

  383. giving themselves to.

  384. He's basically saying,

  385. you know,

  386. every athlete exercises

  387. self-control in all things.

  388. They do it to receive

  389. a perishable wreath,

  390. but we an imperishable.

  391. Okay?

  392. So,

  393. since we're running

  394. for something way greater,

  395. we should do it differently.

  396. We should have

  397. a more extreme commitment.

  398. We should,

  399. and we shouldn't just run.

  400. He's saying,

  401. those people don't just run.

  402. It's not like the people

  403. in the Olympics,

  404. they just run and like,

  405. man, I'm just happy

  406. that I got to run.

  407. This is great.

  408. They're running to get the prize.

  409. They're running for the gold medal.

  410. Right?

  411. No one gets on that microphone

  412. and just says,

  413. yeah, you know,

  414. I didn't make it,

  415. but I'm just happy to run.

  416. You know?

  417. No,

  418. even some people

  419. will get the silver.

  420. You can just see it

  421. and they're just like,

  422. I'm the first loser.

  423. You know,

  424. like,

  425. I came for gold.

  426. I didn't come for silver.

  427. And you can see

  428. the disappointment

  429. in their eyes

  430. when they're even

  431. interviewing them sometime.

  432. You know,

  433. they're trying to,

  434. you know,

  435. have a good attitude

  436. for the camera,

  437. but they wanted gold.

  438. They're running

  439. to get the prize.

  440. How are you running

  441. when it comes to mission?

  442. You just showing up

  443. on a Sunday morning,

  444. doing your part

  445. during the week?

  446. Are you focused on mission?

  447. Who are you focused?

  448. What's their names?

  449. What are the group of people?

  450. Have you set aside

  451. time to pray for the lost?

  452. We inadvertently set aside

  453. sometimes

  454. time to complain about,

  455. man,

  456. I wish there was more people here.

  457. I wish there was people

  458. getting saved.

  459. Well,

  460. where's the time being put in

  461. to connect

  462. with the one who saves?

  463. Where's the time being put aside

  464. to get on mission,

  465. literally,

  466. to actually preach

  467. the gospel to people,

  468. to build relationships

  469. with people?

  470. If we're not putting,

  471. if we're not running

  472. to obtain the prize,

  473. we're not going to.

  474. That's why he says,

  475. I don't run aimlessly.

  476. I don't box as one

  477. beating the air,

  478. but I discipline myself.

  479. There is a discipline

  480. that comes with mission.

  481. And listen,

  482. if you're looking

  483. for some quick fix

  484. where all of a sudden

  485. God sends thousands

  486. of people to us

  487. or hundreds

  488. or I don't know,

  489. whatever,

  490. whatever it is,

  491. the number that you're

  492. looking for,

  493. maybe it's just 20.

  494. Whatever it may be,

  495. listen,

  496. that's just,

  497. that can happen,

  498. it has happened in church,

  499. but we're not living

  500. for revival,

  501. okay?

  502. We're living for Jesus.

  503. We don't get up and down

  504. whether there's revival

  505. or not.

  506. We're looking for

  507. the steady state

  508. discipleship,

  509. day in and day out,

  510. consistency.

  511. Where are the

  512. consistent missionaries?

  513. Where are the

  514. consistent prayer warriors?

  515. Where are the

  516. consistent gospel preachers?

  517. Where is the consistency?

  518. We got to have consistency.

  519. There has to be discipline.

  520. You know that none

  521. of those runners

  522. who lack,

  523. the ones who lack

  524. discipline,

  525. they don't win.

  526. They don't,

  527. they don't win.

  528. You know,

  529. when they interviewed

  530. Tom Brady now

  531. that his career's over,

  532. more Super Bowls

  533. than any quarterback,

  534. they interview him,

  535. you know,

  536. he talks about

  537. these young guys

  538. and he just kind of

  539. scoffs at them.

  540. He's just like,

  541. they'll be good.

  542. They'll be good football players,

  543. but they're never

  544. going to be champions.

  545. You know,

  546. it's like,

  547. why?

  548. Because they don't

  549. put in the work

  550. when nobody else

  551. is doing it.

  552. If you want to win

  553. like nobody wins,

  554. you've got to train

  555. like nobody trains.

  556. And,

  557. you know,

  558. he kind of just looks at it

  559. and just says,

  560. yeah,

  561. you know,

  562. it's not like

  563. I was gifted

  564. with all this amazing

  565. ability.

  566. I had to work for it.

  567. And there is a certain

  568. level of work

  569. that comes into

  570. anything that God

  571. gives us to do.

  572. Yes,

  573. we're trusting in God,

  574. we're believing in God,

  575. we're trusting in the

  576. work of Christ,

  577. but that doesn't mean

  578. we don't work with him,

  579. that we don't co-labor

  580. with him.

  581. And there needs to be

  582. a consistent

  583. missional discipline

  584. for us to see

  585. a harvest.

  586. Just like a farmer

  587. can't just say,

  588. well,

  589. I don't feel like

  590. going out there today.

  591. He could lose

  592. the whole crop with that.

  593. He's got to go in

  594. day and day.

  595. He can't just say,

  596. man,

  597. it's early.

  598. I'm sick of getting up early.

  599. Why do I got to keep

  600. getting up early

  601. and getting in these fields?

  602. Because that's what a farmer

  603. has to do in order

  604. to reap a harvest.

  605. And no farmer

  606. reaps a harvest

  607. by just randomly

  608. going out

  609. when he feels like it.

  610. He doesn't reap a harvest

  611. if he does what he wants,

  612. when he wants,

  613. how he wants,

  614. the way he wants.

  615. There's many times

  616. he has to do things

  617. he doesn't want.

  618. He has to do it

  619. when he doesn't want.

  620. He has to do it

  621. when other people

  622. are doing things

  623. he'd rather do.

  624. And yet he has to put

  625. his nose to the grindstone

  626. and say,

  627. I've got to keep plowing.

  628. I've got to keep

  629. planting seed.

  630. I've got to keep weeding.

  631. I've got to keep

  632. removing rocks.

  633. I've got to keep watering.

  634. I've got to keep doing

  635. the things I'm going to do

  636. or there will be

  637. no harvest and fall.

  638. And Jesus calls

  639. the bringing in of the lost,

  640. he calls it a harvest.

  641. And his question is,

  642. where are the labors?

  643. He says the harvest

  644. is plentiful,

  645. but that's not the problem.

  646. The problem isn't that

  647. if the work is done,

  648. there won't be any result.

  649. He makes that clear.

  650. Do you hear me on that?

  651. Like, I think sometimes

  652. in our mind we think,

  653. oh, it's not worth it

  654. to do the work

  655. because I'll do it

  656. and there won't be a harvest.

  657. No, that's not the problem

  658. that Jesus is describing.

  659. He's not saying,

  660. you know,

  661. there's so many workers,

  662. but you know,

  663. sometimes it's just

  664. not a harvest.

  665. He's saying the harvest

  666. is plentiful.

  667. The issue is the workers.

  668. The workers are few.

  669. Harvest is plentiful,

  670. but the workers are few.

  671. There has to be

  672. missional discipline.

  673. Do you have

  674. missional discipline?

  675. And I know some of you

  676. have discipline

  677. in other areas.

  678. I've seen it.

  679. Do you have discipline

  680. when it comes to mission?

  681. Do you have discipline

  682. when it comes to

  683. the steady state,

  684. praying,

  685. gospel preaching,

  686. planning,

  687. strategizing

  688. to win the lost?

  689. Just like if you were

  690. plopped in here

  691. as a missionary,

  692. you wouldn't just,

  693. you know,

  694. land in here

  695. as a missionary

  696. and get comfortable

  697. with the culture

  698. and just think,

  699. well,

  700. I hope God brings souls

  701. and I hope he establishes

  702. a church.

  703. Now you'd get to work

  704. doing what needs

  705. to get done

  706. to see people get saved.

  707. And you'd realize

  708. it's going to take time,

  709. but I can't let up.

  710. I've got to run

  711. as someone who gets

  712. the prize.

  713. I've got to discipline

  714. my body

  715. and make it my slave

  716. so that I'm not

  717. disqualified for the prize.

  718. Let's look at some

  719. Bible verses,

  720. some more Bible verses.

  721. Luke 19.10,

  722. the Son of Man

  723. came to seek

  724. and to save the lost.

  725. Who are you seeking?

  726. Who are the specific

  727. people you're seeking?

  728. Has God given you

  729. a burden for specific people?

  730. Has God opened the door

  731. for you to reach out

  732. to specific people?

  733. Who are the specific

  734. lost people

  735. you're seeking?

  736. You already have an area.

  737. How are we reaching

  738. this area?

  739. How are we making inroads?

  740. What are we doing?

  741. How are we getting there?

  742. Jesus came to seek

  743. and to save.

  744. He was seeking it out.

  745. He was looking

  746. for opportunities.

  747. Matthew 4.19,

  748. he said,

  749. follow me

  750. and I will make you

  751. fishers of men.

  752. Do you trust God

  753. that he'll make you

  754. into that?

  755. He says,

  756. if you follow me,

  757. I will make you

  758. a fisher of men.

  759. I'll make you

  760. a fisher of men.

  761. I'll make you someone

  762. who goes fishing

  763. for men.

  764. Someone who's

  765. seeking out

  766. how to catch men

  767. into the net

  768. of the kingdom.

  769. Do you believe that?

  770. Those of you

  771. who lack confidence,

  772. those of you

  773. who maybe lack power

  774. in this area,

  775. do you believe that

  776. if you follow Christ,

  777. he will lead you

  778. right into the place

  779. of being a fisher of men?

  780. That's what happens.

  781. Matthew 28,

  782. Great Commission,

  783. 18 to 20,

  784. Jesus came and said to them,

  785. all authority in heaven

  786. and on earth

  787. has been given to me.

  788. Go therefore

  789. and make disciples

  790. of all nations,

  791. baptizing them

  792. in the name of the Father

  793. and of the Son

  794. and of the Holy Spirit,

  795. teaching them to observe

  796. all that I've commanded you

  797. and behold,

  798. I'm with you always

  799. to the end of the age.

  800. Okay?

  801. He came to them

  802. and said,

  803. go.

  804. Go.

  805. You have to go.

  806. The church has been

  807. converted into this weird,

  808. we've changed

  809. the Great Commission

  810. to come.

  811. Established buildings

  812. and services

  813. and programs

  814. that revolve around

  815. come.

  816. Get them to come to you.

  817. That was never

  818. the Great Commission.

  819. We've turned Christianity

  820. into some attractional mode

  821. and I know some people

  822. feel better about it

  823. because they say,

  824. oh, we don't do that

  825. on Sunday mornings.

  826. We don't invite a bunch

  827. of people on Sunday mornings

  828. to try and have them

  829. hear the gospel

  830. and get saved.

  831. We're better than that.

  832. But then we do

  833. the same thing

  834. in a smaller setting

  835. called a missional community

  836. and instead of doing

  837. the hard work

  838. of getting in people's life,

  839. reaching out to people,

  840. plowing and plowing

  841. and plowing

  842. in prayer

  843. and in the gospel,

  844. we just trade that

  845. for a meeting invite

  846. to a missional community gathering.

  847. Instead of going

  848. to where they are,

  849. instead of going

  850. into the world

  851. to preach the gospel,

  852. instead of going

  853. to lost people

  854. and building relationships,

  855. instead of going

  856. to the place of prayer

  857. and saying,

  858. God, open up the doors.

  859. Who are the men

  860. and women of peace?

  861. God, bring them to me.

  862. We have to go.

  863. You have to go.

  864. You can't stay

  865. where you're at.

  866. You can't stay comfortable.

  867. You can't stay

  868. in doing what you were doing

  869. when you weren't winning souls.

  870. If you've been

  871. in a place

  872. where you're not winning souls,

  873. do something else.

  874. Go somewhere,

  875. like change it up.

  876. Get into a different action.

  877. God, give me

  878. a different strategy.

  879. I want to see it.

  880. Romans 10, 13 to 15,

  881. everyone who calls

  882. on the name of the Lord

  883. will be saved.

  884. How then will they call

  885. on him whom they've not believed?

  886. And how are they

  887. to believe on him

  888. in whom they have not heard?

  889. And how are they

  890. to hear without someone preaching?

  891. And how are they

  892. to preach unless they are sent?

  893. As it is written,

  894. how beautiful are the feet

  895. of those who preach good news.

  896. How are they to hear

  897. without someone preaching?

  898. We've got to preach.

  899. We've got to preach.

  900. You might say,

  901. I don't know who to preach to.

  902. Do you believe

  903. that God wants you

  904. to preach to someone?

  905. Do you believe

  906. that God wants

  907. to give you those people?

  908. Are you confident

  909. in that prayer?

  910. Are you praying

  911. that with unbelief?

  912. Are you a double-minded man

  913. when it comes

  914. to praying for the lost?

  915. You shouldn't think

  916. you receive anything

  917. from the Lord.

  918. When you pray,

  919. do you believe

  920. that God wants you

  921. to preach,

  922. that he has people

  923. preordained

  924. to hear the gospel,

  925. people who are ready

  926. for harvest,

  927. that he's just waiting

  928. for laborers to go to?

  929. Do you believe

  930. that that's you and me,

  931. that we are those laborers

  932. that God wants

  933. to bring forth

  934. so that they can hear

  935. the gospel?

  936. Do you pray like that?

  937. Do you pray that

  938. there's literally nothing

  939. that can stop that?

  940. That if I'm preaching

  941. to someone

  942. that God is calling,

  943. that God is drawing,

  944. that God is saving,

  945. they can't resist that?

  946. Are you kidding me?

  947. The power of that?

  948. Just like,

  949. you know,

  950. think of all the things

  951. we did to try

  952. to resist God.

  953. Think of all the ways

  954. that we stiff-armed him

  955. and pushed him away

  956. and said,

  957. I don't need you

  958. and our arrogance

  959. and pride kept pushing

  960. and said,

  961. I got it on my own.

  962. This religion stuff,

  963. it's not for me.

  964. I'm fine on my own

  965. when deep inside

  966. knowing we didn't

  967. have it on our own.

  968. Think of how many times

  969. we did that

  970. and God never gave up on us.

  971. God pursued us.

  972. He broke down our walls.

  973. He broke down our resistance.

  974. He broke down our pride.

  975. And then sometimes

  976. when we get in prayer,

  977. we don't believe

  978. that God will do the same thing

  979. to other lost people.

  980. We think,

  981. oh, they're too prideful.

  982. They're too independent.

  983. They're too resistant

  984. of the gospel.

  985. Wasn't that us?

  986. Have we forgotten

  987. where we came from?

  988. Have we forgotten

  989. that we were the ones

  990. who rejected the gospel?

  991. Have we forgotten

  992. all the times

  993. that we pushed God away

  994. and God just kept

  995. breaking us down

  996. and breaking us down

  997. and breaking us down

  998. until finally

  999. we received it

  1000. with so much eagerness

  1001. we actually thought

  1002. it was us

  1003. who bid it

  1004. in the first place?

1005. That we were so eager

  1006. to do it,

  1007. we just almost,

  1008. now at this point

  1009. we kind of think,

  1010. oh, yeah,

1011. I kind of did that.

  1012. No.

1013. Nobody comes to the Father

  1014. unless the Father

  1015. draws them.

  1016. Right?

  1017. The Father draws people.

  1018. He's drawing people

  1019. right now.

  1020. He's drawing people

  1021. in Raytown.

  1022. He's drawing people

  1023. around us

  1024. and in our life,

  1025. even right in front

  1026. of our eyes.

  1027. But,

  1028. they have to believe

1029. and how can they believe

  1030. unless they hear

1031. and how can they hear

  1032. unless someone preaches?

1033. We've got to preach to them.

  1034. We've got to preach.

  1035. So,

1036. we've got to be confident

  1037. in prayer.

1038. We've got to be confident

  1039. in the gospel.

  1040. If we're not,

1041. we need to be filled

1042. with the Spirit of God.

1043. We need the Holy Spirit

1044. to be poured on us

  1045. so we can speak

1046. the Word of God boldly,

  1047. so we can be

  1048. as witnesses

  1049. in Raytown,

  1050. Kansas City,

1051. in the ends of the earth,

1052. wherever He may take us.

  1053. Right?

1054. But someone's got to preach.

1055. We need some beautiful feet.

  1056. Are your feet beautiful?

1057. You know how your feet

  1058. are beautiful?

1059. Not because you manicure them

  1060. and you,

  1061. you know,

1062. stick them in a pond

  1063. with those fish,

  1064. whatever,

1065. that eat all the bacteria.

  1066. Your feet are beautiful

1067. when you preach good news.

  1068. Those are the feet

  1069. that are beautiful.

1070. Do you have beautiful feet?

  1071. Do you have feet

  1072. that come from

  1073. a body

1074. that is preaching good news?

  1075. Okay?

1076. So what are we going to do?

1077. We got to get specific

  1078. on this.

  1079. What are the people

  1080. and places

  1081. you're targeting?

  1082. Like,

  1083. if you can't answer

  1084. the question,

  1085. the who,

  1086. like,

  1087. who are you targeting?

  1088. What places

  1089. are you targeting?

  1090. Or,

  1091. where are you already

  1092. spending your time?

  1093. And you don't have

  1094. any kind of

  1095. strategic focus

  1096. on that

  1097. as a missional

  1098. community together

  1099. and most certainly

  1100. individually

  1101. at a minimum,

  1102. you have a,

  1103. and the difference

  1104. between the two,

  1105. right?

  1106. They're not the same.

  1107. You're always going

  1108. to be called

  1109. to be on mission

  1110. wherever you're at.

  1111. The people

  1112. you're on mission

  1113. won't always be

  1114. the same people

  1115. that your missional

  1116. community will be

  1117. on mission together with.

  1118. Now,

  1119. as much as possible

1120. you want to do that,

  1121. but don't have

  1122. this weird expectation

  1123. that every single person

  1124. you're on mission to,

  1125. your missional community

  1126. is going to.

  1127. You start with

  1128. getting on mission

  1129. yourself with people

  1130. and then as much

  1131. as possible

  1132. as you can bring

  1133. people together

  1134. that you do that.

  1135. But,

1136. we always have to be

  1137. on mission

  1138. to the people

  1139. we're working with,

  1140. the people that are

  1141. around us,

  1142. the people that

  1143. we're interacting with

  1144. and then as much

  1145. as possible

  1146. as we can see,

  1147. okay,

  1148. where there's

  1149. intersections

  1150. between who,

  1151. we're all,

  1152. people that have

  1153. already been placed

  1154. in our life,

  1155. the places

  1156. we're already

  1157. frequenting

  1158. and,

  1159. you know,

  1160. where we spend

  1161. our time,

  1162. where do we,

  1163. can we intersect

  1164. with other people?

1165. Are we looking about that?

  1166. Are we having

  1167. conversations about that?

  1168. How many conversations

1169. have you had with people

  1170. like,

  1171. okay,

  1172. where's the

  1173. missional

  1174. intersections

  1175. of our lives

  1176. where we know

1177. some of the same people

  1178. and we're reaching out

  1179. to them,

  1180. we visit

  1181. or frequent

  1182. the same places

  1183. or businesses

  1184. or small business owners,

  1185. you know,

1186. whether it's the same place

1187. we get our hair cut

1188. or get our car fixed

  1189. or grocery store

  1190. we go to

  1191. or coffee shop

  1192. we frequent,

  1193. whatever it may be,

  1194. what are those

  1195. same places

1196. and then what are we

  1197. doing to specifically

  1198. reach them

  1199. or what are the

  1200. new people in places

  1201. and just getting

  1202. specific about that,

  1203. like,

  1204. who are these new

  1205. people we want

  1206. to reach out to?

  1207. Praying for God,

  1208. like constantly

1209. just crying out to God,

  1210. are you doing this

  1211. daily?

  1212. Are you doing this

  1213. before the Lord

  1214. as a church plan?

  1215. I'm saying,

  1216. I know I want

  1217. to do this more.

1218. I need to do this more.

  1219. I'm convicted myself

  1220. of not praying

  1221. enough for this.

1222. I want to press in

  1223. more in prayer

  1224. for this church

  1225. and just say,

  1226. God,

  1227. give us souls.

  1228. Give us new people.

  1229. Give us people.

  1230. Give us young people.

  1231. We should specifically

1232. be praying for young people.

  1233. This morning I prayed

  1234. for young people.

  1235. Why did I pray

  1236. specifically for young people?

  1237. What about old people?

1238. We don't like old people?

1239. We do like old people.

  1240. Okay?

  1241. I'm a middle-aged person

1242. so I like both people,

  1243. right?

  1244. But no,

  1245. we need both people

  1246. but as older,

  1247. we should always be

  1248. turning our hearts

  1249. towards youth

  1250. and if we're a new church,

  1251. there's no future

  1252. without young people.

1253. You want a future church?

1254. We got to reach out

  1255. to young people.

  1256. We have to.

  1257. Always,

  1258. always to the end.

  1259. Always reaching out

  1260. to young people.

1261. If you're an older person

1262. and you get too entrenched

  1263. in your ways

1264. and you can't reach out

  1265. to young people,

  1266. you're not being

  1267. a good Christian

  1268. because you have

1269. no vision for the future.

1270. If all you care about

  1271. is your generation,

1272. you have to be turned

  1273. towards young people.

  1274. Turn towards people

  1275. and say,

1276. this is the future generation.

1277. I'm not going to just say,

  1278. well,

  1279. I'm older.

  1280. I don't need to do that.

  1281. I paid my dues.

  1282. I did my time.

  1283. No way.

  1284. No way.

  1285. Always turning our hearts.

  1286. Looking for double portion

  1287. sons and daughters.

1288. Never giving up on that.

  1289. Okay?

  1290. So praying for specifically

  1291. for young people

1292. to come into this church,

  1293. that should always be

1294. a prayer focus for us.

  1295. That's the future.

1296. And when older people come,

  1297. we love them

  1298. and we welcome them.

  1299. That's great.

  1300. But then we get

  1301. those older people

  1302. to pray with us

  1303. in the same way

  1304. for young people.

1305. You know what I'm saying?

  1306. For sure.

  1307. We have to.

  1308. That's the future.

  1309. That's the future.

  1310. Okay?

1311. Who are those specific people?

1312. If I were to ask

  1313. the individual

  1314. missional communities

  1315. and say,

1316. who are you on mission to?

1317. Do you have a specific answer?

  1318. I'm not talking

  1319. about a generic answer.

1320. And it may be specifically

1321. that we don't have specific,

  1322. but we're praying

  1323. for specifics

  1324. and we're intentional.

1325. We're making time for this.

1326. Just as much as we're making time

1327. to be a family together,

  1328. we are spending

  1329. just as much time

  1330. focusing on being

  1331. on mission together.

  1332. Don't relegate that

  1333. to the side.

  1334. Don't relegate that

  1335. to a small portion

1336. of your missional community life.

  1337. That has to be

  1338. just as valuable.

  1339. They're not just communities.

  1340. They're missional communities.

  1341. Do you hear me?

  1342. You're just cultivating community

  1343. and not cultivating mission.

  1344. We're missing it.

  1345. Not to mention,

1346. the best way to cultivate

1347. community and sense of family

1348. is getting on mission together.

  1349. Ask anybody

1350. who was in the military

  1351. for a long,

  1352. protracted period of time

  1353. what they miss most

  1354. and they will say

  1355. they miss the camaraderie,

  1356. the sense of vision,

  1357. vision-focused community.

  1358. That like being together

  1359. on the same mission,

  1360. that mission

  1361. brought them closer together.

  1362. I'll never forget

  1363. an interview I watched

  1364. with Stanley McChrystal

  1365. saying that.

  1366. He said,

  1367. I asked him,

1368. what do you miss the most?

  1369. A career military guy.

  1370. He said,

  1371. I miss the mission

1372. and I miss the camaraderie

  1373. of the men.

  1374. And they go right,

1375. they go hand in hand.

1376. And we're not in the military

1377. but you are in the Lord's army

  1378. in a sense.

  1379. You're soldiers for Christ.

  1380. You're not serving,

  1381. you're serving

  1382. your commanding officer.

  1383. And so our mission

  1384. should bring us together.

1385. Sometimes we have a hard time

  1386. being brought together

  1387. by other means

  1388. because we have

  1389. too many differences

  1390. and lack of similarity.

  1391. But we always have

1392. the fellowship of the spirit

  1393. and we always have

  1394. the mission

1395. that can bring us together.

1396. We always have those things.

1397. And if we don't have

  1398. that specific

  1399. in our missional communities,

  1400. there's going to be

  1401. something lacking

  1402. in our familial community

  1403. because we don't have

  1404. something bigger

  1405. than ourselves.

  1406. If we're aiming

  1407. at something so small

  1408. as ourselves

  1409. and being in community

  1410. with ourselves,

  1411. we're missing it.

1412. It has to always be bigger

1413. and that's what brings us together.

1414. That's what brings us together.

1415. So we've got to figure out,

1416. we've got to be praying,

  1417. Lord,

1418. what are the friends and family

1419. that I can be focused on?

  1420. What are the neighbors

  1421. and neighborhoods?

  1422. What are the co-workers

  1423. or workplaces?

  1424. Like I said before,

  1425. whether they go

  1426. into the same restaurant,

  1427. the same store,

  1428. same grocery store,

  1429. same coffee shop,

  1430. same barber.

  1431. I remember years ago,

  1432. one of the guys

  1433. in our missional community

  1434. is like,

  1435. I got this guy,

  1436. he cuts hair,

  1437. he's not a believer.

1438. What do you guys think

  1439. about us all going

  1440. to this guy?

  1441. Yeah,

  1442. that makes total sense.

1443. You're going to sit there

  1444. for a half hour,

1445. hour and you're going to,

  1446. you know,

  1447. not going anywhere,

  1448. right?

1449. And you're going to talk.

1450. And what if all these people

  1451. all go in there

  1452. strategically,

1453. praying for the same guy,

1454. going to the same barber

  1455. on purpose,

1456. same thing with a hair,

1457. you could do with a hairdresser,

  1458. right?

  1459. For the women,

  1460. same mechanic,

  1461. same chiropractor,

  1462. right?

  1463. Done that before,

1464. going to the same chiropractor,

  1465. as other people.

1466. And it's like multiple people

  1467. are preaching the gospel

  1468. to the same person.

  1469. That's awesome

1470. when you do stuff like that,

1471. going to the same park,

  1472. frequenting the same places

  1473. over and over again.

  1474. I was just reading

  1475. a book on evangelism

  1476. by Mark Dever.

  1477. And he says

  1478. he always goes

  1479. to the subway

  1480. by the church building

  1481. where he's at.

  1482. And it's not because

  1483. he has this particular

  1484. love for subway.

  1485. It's because he has

  1486. a particular love

  1487. for the employees

  1488. at subway

1489. and he's got to eat.

  1490. And so he goes

  1491. to the same place.

1492. And when he meets people,

  1493. he says,

  1494. let's go to subway.

  1495. He's like,

  1496. why do you want

  1497. to go to subway?

  1498. He's like,

1499. because I have people there

1500. that I want to frequently

  1501. be in interaction with

  1502. because I'm preaching

  1503. the gospel to them.

  1504. I love that.

  1505. That's great.

  1506. Okay?

  1507. Who are those people?

  1508. What are these ways

  1509. we can get in?

1510. I remember in the early days

  1511. of Bellicose,

1512. there was so many times

  1513. you're just like,

  1514. who are we going

  1515. to reach out to?

1516. How are we going to,

1517. how is this going to happen?

  1518. How is this church

1519. going to get on its feet?

  1520. How,

  1521. who are we going

  1522. to be the people?

1523. And in those early days,

1524. it was hard to believe.

  1525. You're building something

  1526. out of nothing.

  1527. You can't see it.

  1528. But we,

  1529. there was this,

  1530. there's an excitement

  1531. in prayer

  1532. when you realize

  1533. God wants to give

  1534. those people to you

  1535. and that he will.

  1536. He will.

  1537. Do you believe that?

  1538. Can you pray

  1539. and get excited

  1540. while you're praying

  1541. even though the answer

  1542. hasn't come yet

  1543. because you're anticipating

  1544. the inevitability

  1545. of the answer.

  1546. Do you understand

  1547. what I'm saying?

  1548. Where your excitement

  1549. comes from the inevitability

1550. of the not yet answered prayer

1551. and it gives you excitement

1552. and fuel to keep praying for it

1553. and you begin to see things

  1554. in the spirit

  1555. that are coming

  1556. and it makes it,

  1557. it makes it less,

  1558. it's not invisible anymore,

1559. it makes it easier to build.

1560. The hardest thing to build

1561. is what you can't see.

  1562. So,

1563. you need to see it.

  1564. Well,

1565. the only way you're going

  1566. to see the invisible

  1567. is through prayer

  1568. and the only way

  1569. that's going to happen

1570. is when we come into unity

  1571. around these things

  1572. and pray together

1573. and we begin to start

  1574. seeing things in prayer,

  1575. we begin to start

  1576. seeing things prophetically

1577. and we begin to pray

  1578. into them with excitement

1579. and a sense of an inevitability

1580. that causes us to be

  1581. just joyful

1582. in what's going to happen

1583. and then we just wait

  1584. in the Lord

1585. and just see it happen.

1586. We do it in rest.

  1587. We're not striving.

1588. We're not having to muster

  1589. some church thing up.

1590. We're not feeling this pressure

1591. to make the church cool.

1592. We're not feeling this pressure

  1593. to make it enjoyable

1594. and to get good friendships.

  1595. No, we are resting

  1596. in God's desire

  1597. to do for us

  1598. what we couldn't do

  1599. for ourselves

1600. in ways that are way greater

1601. than we could ever do

1602. because He cares for us

  1603. and He loves us

  1604. and He wants us

  1605. to have friendships

  1606. and He wants us

  1607. to have new people

1608. and He wants to save people.

  1609. Okay?

1610. But we have to have

  1611. missional discipline.

  1612. We got to get,

1613. we have to have specific

  1614. people and groups

  1615. and places.

  1616. It has to happen.

1617. Do you hear me on that?

  1618. I know I've said that

  1619. a million times

  1620. but I don't know

1621. if it's totally sunk in yet.

1622. I think we have kind of this,

1623. we have desire for it,

1624. we have value for it.

  1625. Maybe we're lacking

1626. the discipline in it though.

1627. Do you hear me on that?

  1628. Have desire,

1629. have a little bit of strategy

1630. but do we have the discipline

  1631. to see it through?

1632. Do we have the focus

  1633. that is required

1634. to literally see a church established

  1635. beyond just the team

  1636. that got sent

  1637. and a few people

1638. coming in here and there

  1639. who are already believers?

1640. Like do we have the discipline

  1641. to see it through?

1642. You got to ask yourself

  1643. that question.

  1644. Okay?

1645. And then we got to figure out

1646. ways that we're going to

  1647. engage these people.

  1648. Once you have

  1649. those specific people,

  1650. what are the ways

1651. we're going to engage people?

  1652. Okay?

  1653. Three really easy ones

  1654. are eating,

  1655. planning events,

1656. and serving and blessing people.

  1657. Okay?

  1658. Just eating together

  1659. with people.

  1660. Doing barbecues,

  1661. parties,

  1662. meals.

  1663. Okay?

  1664. Not inviting people

1665. to your missional community gathering

  1666. unless you've set apart

  1667. a specific gathering

  1668. for lost people.

  1669. But just saying,

  1670. hey,

1671. come over to have a meal

1672. or let's go out to eat

1673. or let's go grab something

  1674. to drink.

  1675. Okay?

  1676. Giving meals away.

1677. Maybe having like a regular thing,

1678. like a night of the week

  1679. where this night

  1680. is always open

  1681. to have people over.

1682. Like I've set that aside

  1683. or Sunday afternoons

  1684. to invite new people

1685. who've come to the church.

  1686. which,

  1687. you know,

  1688. that's a little sparse now

1689. but maybe down the road

1690. that'll become more and more.

  1691. I mean,

  1692. at Bellacook now

  1693. you could do that

1694. until the cows come home

1695. and you'd never run out of people

  1696. because there's just

  1697. influx of people.

1698. Didn't used to be that way.

1699. Didn't used to be that way at all.

  1700. Okay?

1701. It's got to start somewhere.

  1702. All right?

1703. Maybe doing like a night

1704. of just having coffee together

  1705. or desserts together,

  1706. you know?

1707. Especially as it gets cooler.

  1708. making it fun,

  1709. you know,

  1710. doing some kind of

  1711. food contest together.

  1712. Best dessert,

  1713. best dip,

  1714. best barbecue,

  1715. best pizza.

  1716. I don't care.

  1717. Anything like that.

  1718. Just doing stuff

1719. that you can get around people

  1720. and build relationships.

  1721. Or events,

  1722. sports.

  1723. In one month,

  1724. football season starts.

  1725. I know that

  1726. whether you're

1727. a Chiefs fan or not,

  1728. whether you're

1729. a football fan or not,

1730. a lot of people are.

  1731. And we just happen

  1732. to have a team

1733. that's won the Super Bowl

1734. two years in a row.

1735. They're going to be trying

1736. to win a third one.

1737. You think people are going

1738. to be interested in that?

  1739. You better believe it.

  1740. Okay?

  1741. You might say,

  1742. well,

1743. I'm not interested in that.

  1744. Well,

  1745. other people are.

  1746. So,

1747. will you become all things?

1748. Maybe you become a Chiefs fan

1749. to win as many for Christ.

1750. You know what I'm saying?

  1751. It happens every week.

  1752. It's like a weekly rhythm.

1753. You could literally have a plan

  1754. in place like,

  1755. okay,

  1756. we're going to watch

  1757. the Chiefs game

  1758. every week

1759. and we're going to invite

  1760. people in

1761. that we're on mission to.

  1762. Talk about a natural,

  1763. normal,

  1764. neutral setting

1765. that's not going to wig people

1766. out as some religious weirdos.

  1767. Right?

  1768. Just wait,

  1769. you're going to go,

  1770. you're going to,

  1771. you want to watch

  1772. a football game together?

  1773. Oh yeah,

  1774. I could do that.

  1775. You know,

1776. no one's going to be like,

  1777. weird.

  1778. Okay,

  1779. but that's what I'm saying.

  1780. Like,

1781. but planning stuff like that,

  1782. just say,

  1783. it's coming up.

1784. I'm not saying you have to,

  1785. have to do that.

  1786. I'm just saying,

  1787. ideas like that,

1788. looking at the season you're in,

  1789. football season's coming up,

1790. using that for that purpose.

  1791. Right?

  1792. We're going to literally

1793. regularly open up our home

  1794. for Chiefs games

1795. and then bring lost people

  1796. and bring neighbors in.

  1797. Most of your neighbors

  1798. are already doing that.

1799. Just do it with them.

  1800. Hey,

1801. are you watching the Chiefs game?

  1802. Yeah,

  1803. I am.

1804. You want to watch it at my place?

  1805. Like,

1806. we'll provide all the food.

1807. You don't need to bring anything.

  1808. Yeah,

  1809. I'll be there.

1810. You know what I'm saying?

  1811. Like,

  1812. that's easy.

  1813. That's low-hanging fruit.

1814. And then when you're there,

1815. don't just watch the Chiefs game.

  1816. Talk about their life.

  1817. You know,

  1818. get it,

  1819. lay the groundwork

1820. and as soon as you see

  1821. that open door,

  1822. you preach the gospel.

1823. And if you don't see

  1824. the open door,

  1825. make one.

  1826. Make one.

  1827. Make the most

  1828. of every opportunity.

  1829. Make an opportunity.

1830. Do you know what I'm saying?

  1831. You know,

  1832. we've talked about

  1833. block parties,

  1834. bonfires,

  1835. game nights,

  1836. holiday celebrations.

  1837. I think that's

  1838. always a good time.

  1839. And that's why I think

1840. fall is such a great time

  1841. for mission.

  1842. Right?

  1843. It's always a time

  1844. to launch things,

  1845. to do things.

  1846. But Halloween comes

  1847. and all your neighbors

  1848. come to your door.

  1849. They come to you.

  1850. Right?

  1851. Do it up better

  1852. than anybody else.

  1853. Okay?

1854. Thanksgiving is a great time

  1855. to just have people

  1856. over for dinner.

  1857. Christmas.

  1858. Christmas parties

  1859. are so easy.

  1860. Right?

  1861. Another American holiday,

  1862. Super Bowl.

  1863. Right?

  1864. Okay?

  1865. Easy to do that.

1866. You have this holiday time

1867. and you have all these

  1868. easy things

1869. to just invite people into.

  1870. Are we being intentional

  1871. with those things?

1872. Do we have a plan

  1873. for those things?

  1874. Movie nights,

  1875. you know,

  1876. dancing,

  1877. cigar pipe nights,

  1878. Bible studies,

  1879. where you just say,

  1880. hey,

1881. we're going to do a Bible study

1882. for this amount of nights

1883. and we're going to invite

1884. people to come to it.

  1885. One-time events,

  1886. weekly events,

  1887. monthly events,

  1888. whatever they may be.

  1889. Or serving people,

1890. like how can we do

  1891. house projects,

  1892. yard projects,

  1893. helping someone financially,

  1894. neighborhood cleanups.

  1895. Just identify at least

  1896. one way to tangibly

  1897. express the gospel

  1898. on a regular basis

  1899. through serving

1900. and then sticking with it

  1901. long enough

  1902. to move beyond

  1903. just tasks

  1904. to relationships.

  1905. Opening the door

  1906. for the gospel.

  1907. Right?

  1908. Opening the door

  1909. for the gospel.

  1910. What are these things?

  1911. Listen,

1912. if you don't have an answer,

  1913. that's okay.

  1914. But don't be okay

1915. with not having an answer

  1916. much longer.

  1917. Because God wants

1918. to give you an answer.

1919. He wants to give you people.

  1920. And like,

  1921. what did Paul do?

1922. Did Paul just say like,

  1923. well,

  1924. I just hope God

  1925. gives us something.

  1926. He said,

  1927. no,

  1928. I'm aiming

  1929. at specific people.

  1930. He said,

1931. Peter's called to these people,

1932. I'm called to these people.

  1933. He's like,

  1934. I'm reaching these people

  1935. this way,

  1936. I'm reaching these people

  1937. this way.

1938. Do you have multiple people

1939. that you're on mission to

  1940. that you're reaching

  1941. in different ways

  1942. and you're becoming

  1943. different things

  1944. that you might mean

  1945. as many people

  1946. through as many means

  1947. as possible?

  1948. That's what church

  1949. should look like.

  1950. Not just creating

  1951. some weird gathering,

  1952. religious gathering

  1953. that majority of people

  1954. will never come to

1955. and hoping that some come to.

  1956. That's what church

  1957. has become.

  1958. Why?

  1959. It should be us

  1960. strategically getting

  1961. on mission to people.

  1962. Never ceasing,

  1963. never stopping,

  1964. always on the offensive.

  1965. When the Bible says,

  1966. Jesus says,

1967. I will build my church

1968. and the gates of hell

1969. shall not prevail against it.

  1970. Have you ever walked

  1971. by a gate

1972. and a gate just attacked you

1973. and knocked you to the ground

1974. and started beating you up?

1975. Gates don't do anything to you.

  1976. When he says that,

1977. when he says that the gates

1978. of hell shall not prevail,

  1979. he's talking about

  1980. an offensive attack

  1981. at the gates.

  1982. He's talking about

  1983. an infiltration

  1984. of enemy territory

1985. that was protected by gates.

  1986. You are pressing

  1987. through the gates.

  1988. He's not talking about

  1989. some gates that are,

  1990. you know,

  1991. you're just doing

  1992. your comfortable church thing

  1993. and these gates

  1994. come attack you.

  1995. That's bizarre.

  1996. That never happens.

1997. That's not what gates do.

  1998. He's talking about

  1999. an offensive

  2000. into hell territory

  2001. and depopulating hell

  2002. with the gospel.

  2003. Gates of hell

  2004. shall not prevail

  2005. against the onslaught

  2006. of the offensive weapon

  2007. of the church.

  2008. Is that church?

  2009. Is that your experience

  2010. of church?

  2011. Is that Christ church

  2012. right now?

  2013. Is Christ church

  2014. on the offensive?

  2015. Is Christ church

  2016. pressing in and through

  2017. the gates of hell

  2018. to depopulate hell

  2019. through the gospel?

  2020. To literally say,

  2021. no, no, no.

  2022. Snatching people

  2023. from the fire

2024. is the language of Jude, right?

  2025. Hating even the clothing

  2026. corrupted by sinful flesh.

  2027. You see that language?

  2028. That's not an

  2029. attractional language.

  2030. That's not,

  2031. let's just get,

  2032. you know,

  2033. the right worship team,

  2034. the right child care

  2035. and the right aesthetics

  2036. and the, you know,

  2037. the charismatic preacher

  2038. so that we can

  2039. just invite people

2040. and have them do the work.

  2041. No, that's the language

  2042. of a missional church

2043. that is on an offensive onslaught

  2044. to break through

  2045. the gates of hell

2046. and to win lost people.

  2047. Can you get excited

  2048. about that?

  2049. Anybody can get excited

  2050. about that,

  2051. but can you be

  2052. consistent in that?

  2053. Can you be disciplined

  2054. in that?

  2055. Can you be excited

  2056. about it

  2057. and be disciplined

  2058. in it

  2059. and keep doing it

  2060. when no one else

  2061. is doing it

  2062. or other people

2063. don't want to do it

  2064. or other people

2065. are burnt out in it,

  2066. tired on it,

  2067. weary on it

2068. or in unbelief about it?

2069. Can you stay in faith

  2070. because you're a church plant

  2071. and you have to?

  2072. You have to.

2073. You got to stay in faith

  2074. because who else

2075. is going to do it

  2076. if you don't?

2077. Who's going to lift you up

  2078. if you don't?

  2079. You got to keep

  2080. crying out to God,

  2081. keep me faithful,

2082. keep me full of faith.

  2083. God, I need you.

  2084. If what I'm saying

  2085. doesn't drive you

  2086. into Christ,

  2087. then what does?

  2088. I'm not,

  2089. this isn't,

2090. you need to just figure

2091. this out on your own

  2092. and become

  2093. some self-dependent,

  2094. muster it up

  2095. kind of people.

  2096. I hope you're overwhelmed

  2097. by the task

  2098. I'm giving to you

  2099. and it drives you

  2100. into Christ.

  2101. And you say,

  2102. God,

  2103. I can't do this

  2104. without you.

  2105. I'm prone to unbelief.

  2106. I'm prone to inconsistency.

  2107. I am missionally

  2108. undisciplined.

  2109. I do it

2110. when I feel like it

  2111. and not when I don't.

  2112. I do it

  2113. when everyone else

  2114. is doing it

2115. and not when no one

  2116. else is doing it.

  2117. I do it

  2118. when there's a strategy

  2119. but not when there's

  2120. a strategy.

  2121. I do it

  2122. when everyone else

  2123. is praying

  2124. but not alone

  2125. in my prayer closet.

  2126. This is not,

  2127. this is not,

  2128. that doesn't work.

2129. That's not going to work

  2130. for a church plant.

  2131. We have to be

  2132. missionally disciplined.

2133. If I want to win

  2134. the prize,

  2135. I have to discipline

  2136. my body.

  2137. This body

  2138. right here

  2139. needs to be disciplined

  2140. missionally.

  2141. Are you?

2142. Are you doing your part?

2143. Are you doing your part?

  2144. And real practically

  2145. ask yourself

  2146. two questions.

2147. What will I stop doing

2148. and what will I start doing?

2149. What will I stop doing

2150. and what will I start doing?

  2151. It might mean

  2152. we have to

  2153. stop doing some things

2154. and start doing other things.

  2155. Answer those questions.

  2156. Answer those questions.

2157. And then we get on,

2158. we get on mission to people

  2159. and become missionally disciplined.

  2160. I,

  2161. I,

  2162. I brag about

  2163. Christ's church

  2164. to other people

  2165. and say

  2166. it's a great group of people.

  2167. I,

  2168. I was preaching

2169. to Velikos the other day

  2170. and saying how

  2171. I see elements

  2172. of the five-fold ministry

  2173. in this church.

  2174. I think it's a great team

  2175. of people

  2176. but a great team

  2177. of people

2178. just like a great athlete

  2179. is wasted

  2180. if there's no discipline.

  2181. So,

  2182. I commend you

  2183. for the greatness

  2184. of this team

2185. that God has put together

2186. but if we aren't disciplined

  2187. and consistent

  2188. for the long haul,

  2189. I'm sorry.

2190. It's not going to happen.

  2191. But if we are,

  2192. if we throw ourselves

  2193. on Christ

  2194. and say,

  2195. God,

  2196. we need you.

  2197. We need you, Jesus.

  2198. We,

  2199. we can't make a church

  2200. appear out of nowhere

  2201. and we've pulled out

  2202. the props

2203. that would draw people otherwise.

  2204. You think they're going

2205. to come into a warehouse

  2206. like this

  2207. because it's so cool?

  2208. You know?

2209. You think that when they see

  2210. our carpet squares

  2211. at the new building,

2212. they're going to be like,

  2213. man,

  2214. this place is awesome.

  2215. Chris is like,

  2216. yeah.

  2217. You know?

  2218. Maybe not.

2219. But what will they see

  2220. as awesome?

  2221. Well,

  2222. these guys

  2223. love one another.

  2224. These guys are passionate

  2225. about what they believe.

  2226. They're serious

  2227. about the gospel

2228. and I heard the gospel here

2229. and it cut me to the heart.

2230. It cut me to the heart.

2231. I heard it from these people.

  2232. They weren't limited

  2233. to a building

  2234. and a service.

  2235. They were only limited

  2236. to

2237. the Holy Spirit in them,

  2238. which is not,

  2239. not a limitation.

  2240. Right?

  2241. Amen?

  2242. Amen.

  2243. And it made it
