  1. I want to talk this morning about the glory of the ordinary.

  2. The glory of the ordinary.

  3. Or as I shared with Dennis before, the glordinary.

  4. Don't title it that unless you want to.

  5. I don't care.

  6. I blame it on Charles Spurgeon.

  7. Thank you, love.

  8. He said if you're not regularly creating new words, then what are you even doing with the English language?

  9. That's my paraphrase of him.

  10. So we have apostologic, which is Paul's way of thinking.

  11. That's another combined word.

  12. A man can't be an elder in the church if he can't manage his own home.

  13. Can't manage the house of God if he can't manage his house.

  14. That's apostologic.

  15. And then we have the glory of the ordinary.

  16. Well, let's pray and then we'll jump in here for a time.

  17. Our Father in heaven, we give you thanks once again for the grace that is ours in Christ Jesus.

  18. Lord, we thank you for the kindness that you have shown us, which we have not deserved.

  19. And your faithfulness, your steadfastness in keeping us and caring for us.

  20. Lord, we thank you for this church, for Christ's church.

  21. And we pray today that you would strengthen your people.

  22. That our faith would be strengthened.

  23. That our knowledge of you would be increased.

  24. That our affections for Christ and for one another would be raised.

  25. And that you would equip us for the work to which you've called us.

  26. We ask these things in Jesus' name.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. I want to read first, before we'll get to 1 Peter 3, which will be the primary text today.

  30. I'm going to read a segment from Zechariah chapter 14.

    Zechariah 14 chapter mention

  31. We've just come out of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

  32. It's now the Jewish New Year as of last week.

  33. Coming up shortly on the 11th, it will be Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

  34. And on the 16th, on through the 23rd, it will be the Feast of Tabernacles.

  35. I'm not saying that so that you will all go back to Jewish roots and start having some formal

  36. celebration of these things, though there can be some profit to that.

  37. I'm saying that to think about something that I want to begin with in Zechariah 14.

  38. Namely, that God is enthroned on high and remains a covenant-keeping God

  39. and means to display his glory on real terra firma on the earth.

  40. Tomorrow will be the one-year anniversary of the invasion from the terrorists from Gaza into different parts of Israel

  41. in which hundreds of Israelis were killed, little babies were killed, women were ravaged and raped

  42. in a rather makeshift operation of men flying over the border into Israel in little privately made paragliders

  43. with generators on them.

  44. And you have to wonder how such an elite military as the Israeli military could be penetrated by such rudimentary things.

  45. And the answer to the question, which is also the answer to the question as to why Israel is yet preserved,

  46. is that God is the God of Israel and has something to put on display of his glory.

  47. And he's displaying that through their judgments, and he's displaying that through their mercies.

  48. And that's something that we need to think about.

  49. Zechariah 14 gives us a glimpse into what things are tending toward.

  50. I'm actually going to read verses 8 through the end of the chapter and just give a few comments

  51. before moving to the main text.

  52. But I want you to understand that this is a post-exilic prophet writing here.

  53. So this is after the Assyrian invasion and after the Babylonian invasion.

  54. And therefore, what is being spoken of here pertains to the future.

  55. Just after there's been a great time of trouble in verses 1 to 2,

  56. just after God himself has planted his feet on the Mount of Olives in the following verses,

  57. verse 4, we have this description of a time that will come when God, the Messiah,

  58. will reign upon the earth from Jerusalem.

  59. Verses 8 and following.

  60. On that day, living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem,

  61. half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea.

  62. It shall continue in summer as in winter,

  63. and the Lord will be king over all the earth.

  64. On that day, the Lord will be one, and his name one.

  65. The whole land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Ramon, south of Jerusalem.

  66. But Jerusalem shall remain aloft on its site from the gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate.

  67. Some of this sounds unfamiliar or irrelevant to you.

  68. Just bear with me and walk through the text.

  69. He's speaking about real places here.

  70. This is part of my point.

  71. To the corner gate and from the tower of Hananel to the king's wine presses.

  72. Verse 11.

  73. And it shall be inhabited, for there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction.

  74. Jerusalem shall dwell in security.

  75. And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples that wage war against Jerusalem.

  76. Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet.

  77. Their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.

  78. Good luck explaining that to your children after the service.

  79. And on that day, a great panic from the Lord shall fall on them, so that each will seize the hand of another,

  80. and the hand of the one will be raised against the hand of the other.

  81. Even Judah will fight at Jerusalem.

  82. And the wealth of all the surrounding nations shall be collected, gold, silver, and garments in great abundance.

  83. And a plague like this plague shall fall on the horses, the mules, the camels, the donkeys, and whatever beasts may be in those camps.

  84. Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come up against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the king, the lord of hosts,

  85. and to keep the feast of booths, or the feast of tabernacles, Sukkot.

  86. This is remarkable.

  87. This is a description.

  88. I'm convinced of the time which is called the thousand-year reign of Messiah,

  89. where Christ is ruling on the earth over the nations.

  90. Magnificent.

  91. Delegates from the nations are coming to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of tabernacles with the redeemed Israel.

  92. This is all happening on real terra firma, on earth, on land.

  93. This is not a symbolic picture with little Cupid angels, fat babies in heavenly diapers,

  94. shooting arrows at romanticists, and playing harps on clouds.

  95. This is the fulfillment of what God has promised upon the earth.

  96. Verse 17,

  97. And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the king, the lord of hosts,

  98. there will be no rain on them.

  99. So the prophet says that during this time, this millennial reign of Christ,

  100. the nations that will not honor the king, who is called here the lord of hosts,

  101. it's not some future merely human king,

  102. he's called the lord of hosts,

  103. if they refuse to celebrate the feast of tabernacles,

  104. then God will withhold rain from them, and their crops will not grow.

  105. Actual judgment from God in real future time.

  106. And if the family of Egypt does not go up and present themselves,

  107. then on them there shall be no rain.

  108. There shall be the plague with which the lord afflicts the nations

  109. that do not go up to keep the feast of booths.

  110. This is one of the reasons we know that Zechariah is not speaking about the new heavens and the new earth here.

  111. Because there is still some recalcitrance and rebellion from certain nations.

  112. And we also know that it's not a statement of this age,

  113. because the lord of hosts himself is physically present in Jerusalem,

  114. ruling over Israel and the nations as king.

  115. This is a remarkable passage that Martin Luther arrived at in his commentary in Zechariah,

  116. and once he got to chapters 12 to 14,

  117. the first time he made a go at it, he wrote,

  118. I have no idea what this passage is speaking about.

  119. And the second time he made a go at it,

  120. he just gave up and didn't write anything.

  121. And so his commentary on Zechariah was never finished.

  122. And it's because he was fixed within an amillennialist frame of thinking.

  123. And there was no denying here that this was a post-exilic prophet

  124. who was not prophesying about the Babylonian exile.

  125. And there's no doubt that it could not either have been about the Roman dictatorship over Israel,

  126. or AD 70, because it concludes with Christ, or God in the text, Yahweh,

  127. planting his feet on the Mount of Olives and ruling right there.

  128. See?

  129. I'm still getting at something here.

  130. It's not an eschatology message.

  131. Might sound like it so far, but it's not.

  132. But it is, but it's not.

  133. This shall be the punishment to Egypt and the punishment to all the nations

  134. that do not go up to keep the feast of booths.

  135. And on that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses,

  136. Holy to the Lord.

  137. And the pots in the house of the Lord shall be as the bowls before the altar.

  138. I'm not going to get into whether or not,

  139. or what the nature of some kind of tabernacle, temple would be during this millennial time.

  140. That's for another discussion.

  141. You can wrestle through it.

  142. Like Adam said, wrestle through it for the next week and see what happens.

  143. But whatever this time is where the Lord himself is ruling from Jerusalem,

  144. it says every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holy to the Lord of hosts,

  145. so that all who sacrifice may come and take of them and boil the meat of the sacrifice in them.

  146. And there shall no longer be a trader or merchant in the house of the Lord of hosts on that day.

  147. In other words, no more foreigners manipulating the worship of God in the lives of God's people.

  148. There will be no tables to overturn there.

  149. The Lord will be there, but he will not be overturning tables.

  150. He will be ruling over the nations.

  151. And for the first time in the history of Jerusalem and of Israel and indeed of the world,

  152. every pot, the most rudimentary elements of travel, of carriage, and of cooking,

  153. whether it's for ceremonial meals or whether it's house to house in Jerusalem,

  154. every one of them will be counted holy to the Lord.

  155. For the light of Messiah will permeate everything.

  156. Years ago when I was thinking about this passage for the first time and breaking my brain over what in the world it could mean,

  157. I consulted David Barron's commentary, which I commend to you.

  158. It was a student of Adolf Zephir, some of you know that name.

  159. And in David Barron's commentary, once I arrived at chapter 14,

  160. I found him writing that this idea of bells on horses and pots, ceremonial pots,

  161. and the cooking pots from house to house in Jerusalem being called holy,

  162. he said that concept is the glorious goal and climax of vision and prophecy altogether.

  163. And I thought to myself, what in the heck is he talking about?

  164. How could bells on horses and pots cooking meat be the glorious goal and climax of vision and prophecy altogether?

  165. And I came to understand ultimately what he meant was,

  166. in that day, the righteousness, peace, and joy of Messiah will permeate everything.

  167. It will all be regarded holy.

  168. There will not be this sputtering of affections in God's people,

  169. the sputtering of secularism in our hearts,

  170. by which we function part of the day as functional atheists,

  171. and part of the day maybe in a devotional time,

  172. or when a brother calls us up to confess sin or something like that,

  173. as those who are eager to worship our God.

  174. And that day, according to the apostles,

  175. God shall be all and all,

  176. and Christ shall have the preeminence.

  177. And this is a picture of that.

  178. Did you see that thing?

  179. How long has that been there?

  180. Thank you, Dennis.

  181. Well, I really would commend a deep study of Zechariah,

  182. the whole book, but chapters 12 through 14 are remarkable in this respect.

  183. And I have never read an amillennialist, postmillennialist, supersessionist commentary

  184. on those passages that was coherent at all.

  185. Even the times of suffering described in Zechariah 14, 1 to 4 in Jerusalem,

  186. houses being pillaged, half of the city exiled, women being raped.

  187. It's a horrible scene.

  188. October 7th was a precursor, a picture of this time of Jacob's trouble

  189. about which the prophets and the Lord Jesus speak.

  190. Jeremiah 30, Daniel 12, Matthew 24, etc.

  191. One of the commentaries said,

  192. this description of Jerusalem is the description of global persecution

  193. against the church throughout the whole of the church age,

  194. which is one of the most ludicrous slights of hand that I've ever seen in exegesis.

  195. Anything to remove the issue of Israel from the consciousness of the church.

  196. Why is that, brothers and sisters?

  197. Well, I'm not going to answer that question because we got to get to 1 Peter 3.

  198. I'm not going to answer that at length.

  199. But let me suggest to you that Satan has a scheme by which to disfigure the person

  200. and glory and will of our God.

  201. And if in any way he can get us to twist what is in God's word,

  202. or to take, as Spurgeon said, to take God's meaning,

  203. to tear it from his own words,

  204. then to that degree will something of our worship also be disfigured.

  205. And if Israel and the land and Jerusalem and the Jewish people

  206. are no longer significant in any way to the purposes of God,

  207. then there are supernaturally promised prophecies

  208. that will find actual fulfillment for which we're not looking at all.

  209. We're not praying about it.

  210. We're not thinking about it.

  211. It's totally removed from our doctrine,

  212. from our prayers,

  213. from our expectations.

  214. And we may find,

  215. in certain respects pertaining to Israel

  216. or to other things pertaining to the Lord,

  217. that in the day of his coming,

  218. we are taken unawares,

  219. when we should have been discerning better.

  220. Jesus scolded the religious leaders

  221. for being able to discern when a storm was coming in,

  222. but not to be able to read what he called the signs of the times.

  223. Well, I'm going to leave that there

  224. and move into this glory of the ordinary,

  225. because I've just read a passage that is rather unordinary.

  226. This is a magnificent, terrifying, glorious, wonderful thing to think about.

  227. And yet there's a sense in which all of the cataclysm

  228. and judgments and remarkable mercies

  229. that are poured out upon the earth copiously in the last days

  230. are leading to something that is very ordinary,

  231. and yet full of glory.

  232. The glordinariness of the picture God gives us here.

  233. And I wonder if you are aware that you, being in Christ,

  234. have been swept up into that majestic narrative.

  235. And that we sitting here today is another page or two

  236. in the volume of church history, redemptive history.

  237. Here we are singing to the lamb that was slain together

  238. and hearing of him and loving him together

  239. and praying that God would sanctify us

  240. and teach us to discern the body

  241. and teach us to build one another up.

  242. This is a slice of church history.

  243. It is ordinary, and yet it's not ordinary.

  244. Do you see?

  245. There is new covenant glory that has come to us in Christ.

  246. If we could see who we really are in Christ,

  247. our mouths would drop open.

  248. There is a time coming when we shall be like him,

  249. 1 John 3, 2,

  250. where we shall see him as he is.

  251. But, brothers and sisters, we already are this.

  252. And the Lord uses the ordinariness of the ordinary

  253. very often to keep us in a place

  254. by which we must walk according to faith

  255. and not according to feelings.

  256. There's a glory to be displayed through the church.

  257. Paul calls it the demonstration of the manifold wisdom of God

  258. through the people of God in Ephesians 3, 10.

  259. It is the very holiness of God.

  260. It is the very love of God.

  261. It is rivers of living water.

  262. It is a testimony, a confession, a witness.

  263. It is the governance of God.

  264. It is all things for us,

  265. slowly but substantially becoming communion with him.

  266. This is the fruit of justification.

  267. This is what is at work in this church

  268. and in every true church.

  269. The grace of God in these ways.

  270. Yet it appears ordinary very often

  271. and we can lose touch with its sacredness and power.

  272. In 1 Thessalonians 4, verse 9 and following,

    1 Thessalonians 4:9

  273. the apostle Paul writes to the church at Thessalonica,

  274. now concerning brotherly love,

  275. you have no need for anyone to write to you

  276. for you yourselves have been taught by God

  277. to love one another.

  278. For that indeed is what you are doing

  279. to all the brothers throughout Macedonia.

  280. But we urge you, brothers,

  281. to do this more and more

  282. and to aspire to live quietly

  283. and to mind your own affairs

  284. and to work with your hands as we instructed you

  285. so that you may walk properly before outsiders

  286. and be dependent on no one.

  287. What a wonderful passage.

  288. I cannot help but imagine the apostle Paul

  289. a week after perhaps having raised Eutychus from the dead

  290. or having the sense of triumph

  291. in a new church that had been planted

  292. in one of those pagan cities.

  293. And there he is in a season

  294. where the church is not supporting him financially,

  295. which he had back and forth,

  296. and spending 40 or 50 hours

  297. making canopies out of leather

  298. for buildings

  299. and interacting with centurions

  300. because he was a Roman citizen

  301. and interacting with them

  302. as he's making a canopy

  303. for the new station

  304. for the soldiers that are moving into this town,

  305. whatever.

  306. He's giving himself to mundane things.

  307. He's aspiring to live quietly.

  308. Everything for him in new covenant grace

  309. has become precious.

  310. And the glory of Zechariah 14

  311. that will permeate the earth,

  312. the glory of God will cover the earth

  313. as waters cover the sea.

  314. That glory is already being tasted

  315. and demonstrated in the life of the apostle.

  316. This is what gives him the kind of heart

  317. and the kind of wisdom

  318. to see the church in the way that he sees it,

  319. to be able to esteem the weakest of members

  320. and not merely men who are elders

  321. or men or women who are most gifted,

  322. but to love the body of Christ.

  323. This all comes from Paul's awareness

  324. of the sacredness

  325. of that which the world deems ordinary.

  326. I'm reading a biography,

  327. a few of you guys in the Workman's Trust

  328. at least know about this,

  329. about an international ministry leader

  330. that was discovered to be in multiple affairs

  331. and even abusing minors

  332. and all of this really horrible, horrible story.

  333. But there was a point in his life

  334. where the man writing the biography

  335. who was his Bible college roommate

  336. and was the guy that helped him

  337. start the ministry in the 1980s

  338. was talking to another leader

  339. from a denomination

  340. that knew this man

  341. who eventually would be exposed.

  342. And that denominational leader

  343. asked the man who's writing this book

  344. years later,

  345. asked him,

  346. do you know what that leader's greatest fear is?

  347. And the man who believed

  348. he was so close to this man

  349. and helped him found the ministry

  350. and all of this said,

  351. well, I think, you know,

  352. probably drowning.

  353. He doesn't get anywhere near water.

  354. He's actually morbidly,

  355. morbidly,

  356. he's terribly afraid of drowning.

  357. And he said,

  358. well, that, okay,

  359. that makes sense.

  360. But that is not his greatest fear.

  361. And he said,

  362. well, okay,

  363. maybe you know him better than me,

  364. but I've been with him

  365. for the last 10 years.

  366. And the guy said to him,

  367. his greatest fear actually

  368. is that at the end of his life,

  369. he should be counted ordinary.

  370. That he would be ordinary.

  371. That he would not have a ministry

  372. that stands out.

  373. That he would not have a name

  374. that leaves a great impact.

  375. That he would have no biography

  376. written of him.

  377. That he would not have

  378. a special calling

  379. among those who are

  380. the holy ones,

  381. the saints.

  382. That he would not be regarded

  383. as gifty.

  384. That he would not be regarded

  385. as successful.

  386. That he would not in any way

  387. stand out in such a way

  388. that he could be regarded

  389. as more than ordinary.

  390. And in that fear,

  391. he did all kinds of drastic things

  392. and moved all kinds of chess pieces

  393. and manipulative ways

  394. that built a large organization

  395. that was known by many,

  396. built a semblance of devotion

  397. even in his life

  398. with fasting and prayer

  399. and study and all kinds of things

  400. when under the hood,

  401. there were piles of poison.

  402. And according to this man,

  403. much of what was fueling that

  404. was his fear of being ordinary.

  405. We're going to have to get over that

  406. if we're going to build the church

  407. in a way that pleases

  408. the one who is the head

  409. of the church.

  410. Because pots and pans

  411. and bells on horses

  412. need also to be regarded

  413. as holy.

  414. And the thing that makes

  415. anything significant

  416. is the presence

  417. of the only one

  418. who is worthy

  419. of being looked upon

  420. with worship.

  421. And that's going to happen,

  422. brothers and sisters.

  423. So let's just think about

  424. a few points

  425. and then we'll touch

  426. on 1 Peter 3.

  427. Let me think for just a moment

  428. and give comment

  429. on the glory of the ordinariness

  430. of this local church.

  431. The glory of the ordinariness

  432. of this local church.

  433. It really should be true

  434. of any local church,

  435. no matter how large or small,

  436. that the lives of the saints

  437. are treated with reverence

  438. and cherished and stewarded

  439. in such a way

  440. that even the things

  441. about one another's lives

  442. that don't seem impressive

  443. or that don't stand out

  444. are stewarded with reverence

  445. and with the fear of the Lord

  446. and with selfless love

  447. toward one another.

  448. That's what Seth

  449. was encouraging us toward

  450. during the Lord's table.

  451. But I wonder if you all

  452. get discouraged at all.

  453. I've known this feeling

  454. of discouragement

  455. many times in my life.

  456. We had a house church

  457. for about 11 years

  458. that we led

  459. and there were many times

  460. where I thought to myself,

  461. what are we doing here?

  462. Where I thought to myself,

  463. okay, is this really fruitful?

  464. And I thought to myself,

  465. man, are these guys

  466. ever going to become elders?

  467. Good grief.

  468. What's taking so long?

  469. And I thought to myself,

  470. are we, are we bearing fruit

  471. in such a way

  472. that glorifies Jesus?

  473. And I also thought, remarkably,

  474. partly owing to that one ministry

  475. that I mentioned earlier,

  476. to people that I knew from there

  477. who looked upon our little church

  478. in a condescending way, frankly.

  479. I have no other way to put it.

  480. That's what it was.

  481. I also felt a sense

  482. of inferiority at times.

  483. I also felt to myself,

  484. I don't know if I should

  485. be doing this anymore.

  486. Well, I don't think any of you

  487. are deeply discouraged

  488. about Christ's church.

  489. I haven't heard anything like that,

  490. though I'm sure you've had times

  491. where you have felt discouraged.

  492. And I want to just re-up you

  493. as a people to remember

  494. that there is glory

  495. in the ordinariness

  496. of this local church.

  497. There is glory here.

  498. What makes you significant

  499. is not your good looks,

  500. though you're all decent.

  501. Or your giftedness,

  502. though there's giftedness here.

  503. What makes you significant

  504. is the same thing

  505. that will make the bells

  506. on the horses

  507. in future Jerusalem significant.

  508. The very light of Christ,

  509. the preeminent one.

  510. And he is here with you

  511. by the Holy Spirit.

  512. You are being made

  513. into a temple

  514. for God's dwelling

  515. by the Spirit.

  516. Ephesians 2.

  517. There is glory

  518. in that ordinariness

  519. in this local church.

  520. Do not despise

  521. the day

  522. of small beginnings.

  523. And by which I don't mean

  524. Christ's church

  525. will one day be a mega church.

  526. I mean,

  527. do not despise

  528. the day

  529. when God is continuing

  530. to shape you

  531. as a people

  532. who know what it means

  533. to walk

  534. in the fear of the Lord

  535. and the comfort

  536. of the Holy Spirit

  537. together.

  538. Because what is knit

  539. in these days

  540. is what will be

  541. the foundation

  542. for who will come,

  543. who will be saved,

  544. who will be discipled,

  545. and whom you send out

  546. to plant and nurture churches

  547. in other places.

  548. What the timber

  549. and essence

  550. of your life together

  551. is,

  552. is what will be replicated

  553. as you go on

  554. seeking to build up

  555. this local body

  556. and ultimately

  557. sending others out

  558. in days to come

  559. by the grace of God.

  560. Do not despise

  561. or overlook

  562. the glory

  563. of what's happening here

  564. because,

  565. however ordinary

  566. it very often feels,

  567. it is precious

  568. to God

  569. and he shed his blood

  570. exactly for it.

  571. This is a slice

  572. of church history.

  573. This is becoming

  574. a new theme for me.

  575. Just making myself

  576. more aware,

  577. we just finished

  578. the church history course

  579. in the Workman's Trust

  580. and I couldn't help

  581. but realize a few things.

  582. Number one,

  583. that all of these figures

  584. in church history

  585. were notably flawed

  586. and that every one of them

  587. God sustained.

  588. every one of them

  589. that was counted faithful

  590. at the end of their lives

  591. with all their sins

  592. and weaknesses,

  593. God kept them

  594. and they went to the grave

  595. with a testimony

  596. of his faithfulness.

  597. May it be the same

  598. for every member

  599. of this church.

  600. There's glory

  601. in this local church.

  602. Number two,

  603. I have four.

  604. The glory

  605. in regular hardships.

  606. Well,

  607. we hear this all the time.

  608. We hear this again.

  609. Yes,

  610. you do.

  611. Yes,

  612. I do.

  613. Life

  614. is hard.

  615. Being a mother

  616. of little children

  617. is difficult.

  618. Being a single person

  619. who wants to get married

  620. is difficult.

  621. Being a man

  622. who is seeking

  623. to grow up

  624. and to eventually

  625. be appointed

  626. as an elder

  627. is chastening

  628. and sifting.

  629. Being a Christian

  630. in a fallen world

  631. that hates Christ

  632. is to live

  633. in a mode

  634. of resistance

  635. in one sense

  636. for all of our life.

  637. You must go through

  638. many hardships

  639. to enter the kingdom

  640. of heaven,

  641. the apostles said.

  642. Life

  643. has within it

  644. sufferings.

  645. One Bible school

  646. president

  647. spoke to his

  648. graduates well

  649. on their graduation days.

  650. They were going off

  651. to pastor churches

  652. in other parts

  653. of the world

  654. by teaching them

  655. with a,

  656. what do you call it?

  657. What do you call it?

  658. A speech

  659. at a graduation thing?

  660. Yeah,

  661. commencement speech

  662. and the title of it

  663. was,

  664. to these men

  665. who are going to be pastors,

  666. thou shalt have spells.

  667. In other words,

  668. you're going to have

  669. sufferings,

  670. tribulations,

  671. things are coming

  672. your way

  673. that are going

  674. to humble you,

  675. sift you,

  676. reveal things in you

  677. that you didn't know

  678. could be revealed

  679. when you thought

  680. you were so sanctified

  681. in that area

  682. and now there's

  683. a new season upon me

  684. and why am I being proud?

  685. Why do I have envy

  686. against this other brother

  687. or sister?

  688. Why am I doubting God?

  689. Why do I have anxiety

  690. over this?

  691. What's going on?

  692. I thought I was already

  693. matured beyond this.

  694. And the Lord says,

  695. I discipline you

  696. because I love you.

  697. And I want your joy

  698. in me to be so full

  699. that it will spill over

  700. onto others.

  701. And for that to happen,

  702. you're going to have

  703. to go through

  704. my fatherly squeeze.

  705. And I am faithful

  706. to continue

  707. to squeeze.

  708. Well,

  709. that will include

  710. regular hardships.

  711. In a sermon called

  712. The Happy Christian,

  713. I was pleased to hear

  714. Daniel Bergthold

  715. teaching Sunday school

  716. this morning

  717. and went to the Sunday school

  718. class and then

  719. prayer meeting

  720. then came here.

  721. And he quoted

  722. out of this,

  723. although I'll have to tell

  724. him later

  725. if he ever hears this,

  726. he quoted

  727. the popular paraphrase.

  728. He didn't actually quote

  729. what Spurgeon says,

  730. so,

  731. but you know,

  732. but we're all growing still.

  733. In the sermon,

  734. Charles Spurgeon,

  735. sermon called

  736. The Happy Christian,

  737. Spurgeon said,

  738. the worldling

  739. blesses God

  740. while he gives him

  741. plenty.

  742. You ever heard

  743. an unbeliever

  744. thank God

  745. for something?

  746. I mean,

  747. I get a promotion

  748. or whatever,

  749. thank God in heaven.

  750. You know,

  751. God doesn't know

  752. the Lord from Adam.

  753. But the worldling

  754. blesses God

  755. while he gives him

  756. plenty.

  757. But the Christian

  758. blesses him

  759. when he smites him.

  760. The Christian

  761. blesses God

  762. when God

  763. smites him.

  764. He believes

  765. him to be

  766. too wise

  767. to err

  768. and too good

  769. to be unkind.

  770. He trusts him

  771. where he cannot

  772. trace him.

  773. Looks up to him

  774. in the darkest hour

  775. and believes

  776. that all

  777. is well.

  778. This is right

  779. at the heart

  780. of so many

  781. precious hymns

  782. that have been

  783. written

  784. throughout the years

  785. and this must

  786. be maintained

  787. and cultivated

  788. by the church

  789. an awareness

  790. that we will

  791. suffer hardship

  792. and there will

  793. be sufferings

  794. even in many

  795. places

  796. if not most

  797. by the time

  798. this whole thing

  799. is wrapped up

  800. persecution

  801. against the church

  802. and we must

  803. be able

  804. to discern

  805. our father's

  806. heart

  807. if we can't

  808. trace exactly

  809. what his hand

  810. is doing

  811. in every instance

  812. this is vital

  813. there's glory

  814. in regular

  815. hardships.

  816. Number three

  817. the glory

  818. in gospel

  819. grace

  820. the glory

  821. in God

  822. with us

  823. let us

  824. continue to return

  825. to the gospel

  826. there is glory

  827. in the gospel

  828. and if in your

  829. Christian life

  830. you can find

  831. glory

  832. nowhere else

  833. if God's glory

  834. is impossible

  835. for you

  836. to see

  837. the shape

  838. of

  839. or to feel

  840. the nearness

  841. of

  842. in every area

  843. then return

  844. to this

  845. that Christ

  846. Jesus

  847. was crucified

  848. for you

  849. and for this

  850. church

  851. for his church

  852. return to gospel

  853. grace

  854. over and over

  855. and over again

  856. almost every song

  857. was just gospel

  858. infused today

  859. which I love

  860. and I know you

  861. brothers and sisters

  862. fellowship over the gospel

  863. which I love

  864. and I say

  865. again

  866. in these early

  867. months

  868. of this church's

  869. existence

  870. keep that

  871. the foundation

  872. and return there

  873. always

  874. it will dispel

  875. our selfish

  876. sentimentalism

  877. our complaining

  878. our grieving

  879. and groaning

  880. our divisions

  881. our tendencies

  882. of pride

  883. that we have

  884. toward one another

  885. the gospel

  886. of grace

  887. cures all

  888. and therefore

  889. let us

  890. return to it

  891. constantly

  892. it might seem

  893. like a mundane

  894. thing

  895. to return there

  896. always

  897. but that's

  898. where the glory

  899. is

  900. last point

  901. the glory

  902. of the cross

  903. well there's

  904. the glory

  905. of Christ's cross

  906. of which we've

  907. been speaking

  908. but I'm speaking

  909. about the glory

  910. of the disciples

  911. cross

  912. just for

  913. an abbreviated

  914. encouragement

  915. you can go

  916. check the

  917. bellicose

  918. website

  919. some weeks

  920. ago

  921. I preached

  922. on

  923. a brother

  924. reminded me

  925. of it

  926. last night

  927. otherwise

  928. I might have

  929. forgotten the

  930. title

  931. the crippling

  932. conflation

  933. of Christian

  934. crosses

  935. there is the

  936. cross of

  937. Christ

  938. which has

  939. accomplished

  940. its purpose

  941. and there's the

  942. cross of the

  943. believer that we

  944. must carry

  945. we cannot

  946. justify

  947. ourselves

  948. as Christ's

  949. cross has

  950. done

  951. but we

  952. must carry

  953. our cross

  954. in light

  955. of his

  956. and in

  957. John chapter

    John 12 chapter mention

  958. 12

  959. the Lord

  960. Jesus said

  961. now among

  962. those who

  963. went up

  964. John tells

  965. us firstly

  966. among those

  967. who went up

  968. to worship

  969. verse 20

  970. of John 12

  971. at the feasts

  972. were some

  973. Greeks

  974. so these came

  975. to Philip

  976. who was from

  977. Bethsaida

  978. in Galilee

  979. and asked him

  980. sir

  981. we wish

  982. to see

  983. Jesus

  984. Philip

  985. went and

  986. told

  987. Andrew

  988. Andrew

  989. and Philip

  990. went and

  991. told

  992. Jesus

  993. and Jesus

  994. answered

  995. them

  996. the hour

  997. has come

  998. for the

  999. son of

  1000. man

  1001. to be

  1002. glorified

  1003. truly

  1004. truly

  1005. I say

  1006. to you

  1007. unless

  1008. a grain

  1009. of wheat

  1010. falls

  1011. into the

  1012. earth

  1013. and dies

  1014. it remains

  1015. alone

  1016. but if

  1017. it dies

  1018. it bears

  1019. much

  1020. fruit

  1021. he speaks

  1022. about his

  1023. own cross

  1024. here

  1025. but then

  1026. he turns

  1027. to the

  1028. disciples

  1029. and says

  1030. whoever

  1031. loves his

  1032. life

  1033. loses it

  1034. and whoever

  1035. hates his

  1036. life

  1037. in this

  1038. world

  1039. will keep

  1040. it

  1041. for eternal

  1042. life

  1043. there is

  1044. glory

  1045. in the

  1046. dailiness

  1047. of the

  1048. carrying

  1049. of our

  1050. cross

  1051. if any

  1052. man would

  1053. come after

  1054. me

  1055. he must

  1056. deny

  1057. himself

  1058. take up

  1059. his cross

  1060. daily

  1061. and follow

  1062. me

  1063. now we

  1064. close with

  1065. 1st Peter

  1066. the last

  1067. two verses

  1068. of chapter

  1069. 2

  1070. and

  1071. 9 verses

  1072. in chapter

  1073. 3

  1074. and we'll

  1075. be done

  1076. by noon

  1077. so that's

  1078. a 45

  1079. minute

  1080. message

  1081. that's a

  1082. if you're

  1083. if you're

  1084. tending

  1085. towards

  1086. cessationism

  1087. let me

  1088. encourage you

  1089. against it

  1090. if Brian

  1091. Pirtle can

  1092. finish the

  1093. sermon

  1094. in 45

  1095. minutes

  1096. that's

  1097. miraculous

  1098. I want

  1099. us to

  1100. think about

  1101. the glory

  1102. of the

  1103. ordinariness

  1104. in terms

  1105. of our

  1106. day to

  1107. day lives

  1108. and the

  1109. governing

  1110. that God

  1111. is increasingly

  1112. giving us

  1113. as his

  1114. people

  1115. you know

  1116. in the

  1117. age to

  1118. come

  1119. whatever

  1120. it means

  1121. we're

  1122. going to

  1123. rule

  1124. and reign

  1125. with

  1126. Christ

  1127. okay

  1128. it's a

  1129. matter of

  1130. stewardship

  1131. and on that

  1132. day we'll be

  1133. able to do it

  1134. in glorified

  1135. bodies with

  1136. no sin

  1137. and no

  1138. unbelief

  1139. and no

  1140. discouragement

  1141. but he's

  1142. already giving

  1143. us stewardship

  1144. of the gospel

  1145. of fellowship

  1146. with one

  1147. another

  1148. of our

  1149. lives

  1150. of our

  1151. money

  1152. of our

  1153. relationships

  1154. for those

  1155. that are

  1156. married

  1157. of our

  1158. spouses

  1159. for those

  1160. that have

  1161. children

  1162. of our

  1163. children

  1164. and these

  1165. things are

  1166. all vital

  1167. and quite

  1168. ordinary

  1169. and abused

  1170. all the

  1171. time by

  1172. people in

  1173. and outside

  1174. the church

  1175. let us

  1176. start with

  1177. the gospel

  1178. in 1st

  1179. Peter 2

  1180. 24

  1181. he himself

  1182. bore our

  1183. sins in

  1184. his body

  1185. on the

  1186. tree

  1187. that we

  1188. might die

  1189. to sin

  1190. and live

  1191. to righteousness

  1192. by his

  1193. wounds

  1194. you have

  1195. been healed

  1196. for you

  1197. were straying

  1198. like sheep

  1199. but have

  1200. now returned

  1201. to the

  1202. shepherd

  1203. and overseer

  1204. of your

  1205. souls

  1206. precious

  1207. precious

  1208. foundation

  1209. Paul warns

  1210. in 2nd

  1211. Timothy 4

  1212. 3

  1213. that in

  1214. the last

  1215. days

  1216. men and

  1217. women will

  1218. acquire

  1219. teachers for

  1220. themselves

  1221. that are

  1222. self-serving

  1223. and they

  1224. will reject

  1225. what he

  1226. calls

  1227. sound

  1228. teaching

  1229. sound

  1230. teaching

  1231. which word

  1232. can be

  1233. translated

  1234. just as

  1235. readily

  1236. healthy

  1237. teaching

  1238. wholesome

  1239. teaching

  1240. I think

  1241. when we

  1242. hear

  1243. sound

  1244. as

  1245. post

  1246. post

  1247. modernist

  1248. people

  1249. that are

  1250. jealous

  1251. for

  1252. truth

  1253. now

  1254. we

  1255. think

  1256. sound

  1257. we

  1258. think

  1259. accurate

  1260. teaching

  1261. which

  1262. is

  1263. true

  1264. but

  1265. it

  1266. means

  1267. more

  1268. than

  1269. that

  1270. it's

  1271. wholesome

  1272. it's

  1273. the

  1274. life-giving

  1275. teaching

  1276. of course

  1277. it's

  1278. all

  1279. accurate

  1280. if it's

  1281. according

  1282. to

  1283. God's

  1284. word

  1285. but

  1286. it's

  1287. tending

  1288. toward

  1289. the

  1290. health

  1291. of

  1292. those

  1293. who

  1294. were

  1295. dead

  1296. and

  1297. diseased

  1298. in

  1299. sin

  1300. the

  1301. building

  1302. up

  1303. of

  1304. the

  1305. church

  1306. the

  1307. transformation

  1308. of

  1309. the

  1310. nations

  1311. which

  1312. is

  1313. why

  1314. in

  1315. Revelation

  1316. 22

  1317. the

  1318. tree

  1319. of

  1320. life

  1321. is

  1322. seen

  1323. as

  1324. a

  1325. tree

  1326. whose

  1327. leaves

  1328. are

  1329. for

  1330. the

  1331. healing

  1332. of

  1333. the

  1334. nations

  1335. so

  1336. there's

  1337. the

  1338. gospel

  1339. foundation

  1340. let us

  1341. ask

  1342. in terms

  1343. of our

  1344. marriages

  1345. those

  1346. who are

  1347. married

  1348. here

  1349. if

  1350. we

  1351. are

  1352. seeing

  1353. the

  1354. glory

  1355. of

  1356. the

  1357. ordinary

  1358. or

  1359. missing

  1360. it

  1361. verses

  1362. three

  1363. and

  1364. following

  1365. likewise

  1366. wives

  1367. be

  1368. subject

  1369. to

  1370. your

  1371. own

  1372. husbands

  1373. so

  1374. that

  1375. even

  1376. if

  1377. some

  1378. do

  1379. not

  1380. obey

  1381. the

  1382. word

  1383. they

  1384. may

  1385. be

  1386. won

  1387. without

  1388. a

  1389. word

  1390. by

  1391. the

  1392. conduct

  1393. of

  1394. their

  1395. wives

  1396. when

  1397. they

  1398. see

  1399. your

  1400. respectful

  1401. and

  1402. pure

  1403. conduct

  1404. do

  1405. not

  1406. let

  1407. your

  1408. adorning

  1409. be

  1410. external

  1411. the

  1412. braiding

  1413. of

  1414. hair

  1415. the

  1416. putting

  1417. on

  1418. of

  1419. gold

  1420. jewelry

  1421. or

  1422. the

  1423. clothing

  1424. you

  1425. wear

  1426. but

  1427. let

  1428. your

  1429. adorning

  1430. be

  1431. the

  1432. hidden

  1433. person

  1434. of

  1435. the

  1436. heart

  1437. with

  1438. the

  1439. imperishable

  1440. beauty

  1441. of

  1442. a

  1443. gentle

  1444. and

  1445. quiet

  1446. spirit

  1447. which

  1448. in

  1449. God's

  1450. sight

  1451. is

  1452. very

  1453. precious

  1454. for

  1455. this

  1456. is

  1457. how

  1458. the

  1459. holy

  1460. women

  1461. who

  1462. hoped

  1463. in

  1464. God

  1465. used

  1466. to

  1467. adorn

  1468. themselves

  1469. by

  1470. submitting

  1471. to

  1472. their

  1473. own

  1474. husbands

  1475. and

  1476. Sarah

  1477. obeyed

  1478. Abraham

  1479. calling

  1480. him

  1481. Lord

  1482. and

  1483. you

  1484. are

  1485. her

  1486. children

  1487. if

  1488. you

  1489. do

  1490. good

  1491. and

  1492. do

  1493. not

  1494. fear

  1495. anything

  1496. that

  1497. is

  1498. frightening

  1499. along

  1500. these

  1501. lines

  1502. in

  1503. Ephesians

  1504. 5

  1505. 33

  1506. Paul

  1507. said

  1508. let

  1509. the

  1510. wife

  1511. see

  1512. to

  1513. it

  1514. that

  1515. she

  1516. respect

  1517. her

  1518. husband

  1519. let

  1520. me

  1521. just

  1522. ask

  1523. the

  1524. wives

  1525. directly

  1526. is

  1527. there

  1528. any

  1529. sense

  1530. in

  1531. which

  1532. you

  1533. might

  1534. be

  1535. slipping

  1536. into

  1537. the

  1538. sin

  1539. of

  1540. disrespecting

  1541. your

  1542. husband

  1543. are

  1544. you

  1545. making

  1546. it

  1547. your

  1548. aim

  1549. not

  1550. only

  1551. to

  1552. refrain

  1553. from

  1554. saying

  1555. the

  1556. most

  1557. drastically

  1558. disrespectful

  1559. things

  1560. but

  1561. in

  1562. the

  1563. positive

  1564. sense

  1565. are

  1566. you

  1567. seeing

  1568. to

  1569. it

  1570. by

  1571. faith

  1572. that

  1573. you

  1574. are

  1575. respecting

  1576. him

  1577. which

  1578. is

  1579. more

  1580. than

  1581. just

  1582. not

  1583. disrespecting

  1584. him

  1585. it's

  1586. respecting

  1587. him

  1588. and

  1589. I

  1590. want

  1591. you

  1592. to

  1593. know

  1594. God

  1595. has

  1596. given

  1597. you

  1598. a

  1599. gift

  1600. a

  1601. strength

  1602. and

  1603. a

  1604. power

  1605. in

  1606. the

  1607. life

  1608. of

  1609. your

  1610. husband

  1611. that

  1612. if

  1613. you

  1614. by

  1615. faith

  1616. respect

  1617. him

  1618. with

  1619. the

  1620. Lord's

  1621. glory

  1622. in

  1623. view

  1624. he

  1625. will

  1626. be

  1627. better

  1628. helped

  1629. by

  1630. you

  1631. to

  1632. be

  1633. a

  1634. godly

  1635. man

  1636. and

  1637. to

  1638. do

  1639. what

  1640. God

  1641. has

  1642. called

  1643. him

  1644. to

  1645. do

  1646. as

  1647. a

  1648. man

  1649. if

  1650. instead

  1651. you

  1652. find

  1653. yourself

  1654. giving

  1655. expression

  1656. to

  1657. the

  1658. disappointments

  1659. that

  1660. he

  1661. will

  1662. bring

  1663. to

  1664. you

  1665. you

  1666. will

  1667. find

  1668. him

  1669. more

  1670. emasculated

  1671. less

  1672. likely

  1673. to

  1674. give

  1675. himself

  1676. this

  1677. self

  1678. sacrificial

  1679. love

  1680. less

  1681. likely

  1682. to

  1683. walk

  1684. in

  1685. wisdom

  1686. more

  1687. likely

  1688. to

  1689. look

  1690. elsewhere

  1691. for

  1692. satisfactions

  1693. that

  1694. are not

  1695. wholesome

  1696. and

  1697. healthy

  1698. it

  1699. doesn't

  1700. mean

  1701. that

  1702. if

  1703. he

  1704. does

  1705. that

  1706. it's

  1707. all

  1708. your

  1709. fault

  1710. he's

  1711. responsible

  1712. but

  1713. I'm

  1714. telling

  1715. you

  1716. there's

  1717. a

  1718. government

  1719. of

  1720. God

  1721. at

  1722. work

  1723. here

  1724. in

  1725. terms

  1726. of

  1727. how

  1728. we

  1729. relate

  1730. to

  1731. one

  1732. another

  1733. and

  1734. I

  1735. want

  1736. to

  1737. ask

  1738. are

  1739. you

  1740. seeing

  1741. to

  1742. it

  1743. that

  1744. you

  1745. respect

  1746. your

  1747. husband

  1748. you

  1749. have

  1750. to

  1751. look

  1752. to

  1753. the

  1754. Lord

  1755. to

  1756. do

  1757. that

  1758. it's

  1759. not

  1760. based

  1761. on

  1762. his

  1763. performance

  1764. it's

  1765. based

  1766. on

  1767. the

  1768. your

  1769. children

  1770. let me

  1771. ask

  1772. directly

  1773. to

  1774. us

  1775. as

  1776. men

  1777. are

  1778. there

  1779. any

  1780. ways

  1781. in

  1782. which

  1783. we're

  1784. slipping

  1785. into

  1786. a

  1787. way

  1788. of

  1789. viewing

  1790. looking

  1791. upon

  1792. the

  1793. ordinariness

  1794. of

  1795. this

  1796. covenant

  1797. marriage

  1798. that

  1799. we

  1800. have

  1801. and

  1802. twisting

  1803. it

  1804. in

  1805. such

  1806. a

  1807. way

  1808. devaluing

  1809. it

  1810. in

  1811. such

  1812. a

  1813. way

  1814. that

  1815. we

  1816. are

  1817. not

  1818. fervently

  1819. loving

  1820. our

  1821. wives

  1822. as

  1823. Christ

  1824. loved

  1825. the

  1826. church

  1827. I'm

  1828. not

  1829. saying

  1830. do

  1831. you

  1832. cut

  1833. them

  1834. down

  1835. all

  1836. the

  1837. time

  1838. do

  1839. your

  1840. voice

  1841. if

  1842. that's

  1843. true

  1844. then

  1845. yes

  1846. repent

  1847. but

  1848. I'm

  1849. not

  1850. saying

  1851. bring

  1852. it

  1853. back

  1854. to

  1855. zero

  1856. here

  1857. brother

  1858. I'm

  1859. saying

  1860. look

  1861. to

  1862. Christ

  1863. repent

  1864. of

  1865. sinning

  1866. against

  1867. her

  1868. in

  1869. ways

  1870. of

  1871. commission

  1872. and

  1873. ask

  1874. are

  1875. there

  1876. sins

  1877. of

  1878. omission

  1879. ways

  1880. I

  1881. should

  1882. be

  1883. loving

  1884. her

  1885. that

  1886. I'm

  1887. not

  1888. loving

  1889. her

  1890. because

  1891. you

  1892. will

  1893. find

  1894. that

  1895. the

  1896. less

  1897. and

  1898. less

  1899. a

  1900. woman

  1901. sees

  1902. and

  1903. knows

  1904. the

  1905. love

  1906. of

  1907. her

  1908. husband

  1909. that

  1910. is

  1911. the

  1912. more

  1913. difficult

  1914. it

  1915. will be

1916. for her to respect him.

1917. I can't tell you how many times

1918. I've sat down with married couples

  1919. who are having issues

  1920. and the difficulty is

  1921. the husband saying

  1922. I don't feel respected

  1923. and the wife saying

  1924. I don't feel loved.

1925. And those feelings are not always entirely accurate

1926. but they've always got their finger

1927. at least on part of the pulse.

1928. And so we need for the honor of Christ

1929. in the ordinariness of our relations

1930. to be relating to one another

  1931. in such a way

  1932. as God has commanded

  1933. are you

  1934. are you doing that

  1935. brothers and sisters

  1936. because that will affect

1937. the worship of this church

1938. the disciples that are made

  1939. the example

  1940. that is set

  1941. and

  1942. on

  1943. and on.

  1944. Lastly

  1945. verse 8

  1946. to the whole church

  1947. married and single

  1948. parents and children

  1949. finally all of you

  1950. have unity of mind

  1951. sympathy

  1952. brotherly love

  1953. a tender heart

  1954. and a humble mind

1955. do not repay evil for evil

  1956. or reviling for reviling

  1957. but on the contrary

  1958. bless

  1959. for to this

  1960. you were called

  1961. that you may obtain

  1962. a blessing.

  1963. and so church

1964. let us love one another

  1965. let us walk

1966. in the fear of God

  1967. and in the comfort

  1968. of the Holy Spirit

  1969. in 1536

  1970. on this day

  1971. William Tyndale

  1972. was strangled to death

  1973. tied to a stake

  1974. and his body burned

  1975. before the people

  1976. of Brussels

  1977. because he labored

  1978. long

  1979. painstakingly

  1980. to do something

  1981. that was massive

  1982. in history

  1983. but that

  1984. day by day

  1985. must have felt

  1986. rather mundane

  1987. translating the whole

  1988. New Testament

  1989. into English

  1990. straight from the Greek

  1991. and about half

  1992. of the Old Testament

  1993. from the Hebrew

  1994. into English

  1995. before he was executed

  1996. it was the accumulation

  1997. of William Tyndale's

  1998. steady

  1999. state

  2000. obedience

  2001. to God

  2002. that produced fruit

  2003. that would last

  2004. forever

  2005. and it's no less

  2006. significant

  2007. what we have

  2008. with our spouses

  2009. what we have

  2010. with one another

  2011. as the church

  2012. each member

  2013. what we have

  2014. in the parenting

  2015. of our children

  2016. in the stewarding

  2017. of all things

2018. may it be for us

  2019. that just as

2020. in the age to come

  2021. we experience

  2022. more and more

  2023. ourselves

  2024. of what it means

  2025. that Christ

  2026. is all

  2027. in all
