  1. If you have your Bibles, you can turn to Colossians chapter 4.

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  2. We're going to start in verse 7.

  3. Seth, I believe it was Seth, was the last one to preach on verses 1 through 7.

  4. So I'm going to continue where he left off.

  5. And, you know, it's a really interesting thing.

  6. Colossi seems to be a church that was just getting going, and there was a lot of establishing to happen.

  7. And Paul articulates that in the beginning of the letter.

  8. So we are also a church that's getting established.

  9. We're not established yet, but we're in the making.

  10. So there's a lot that we can draw from the book of Colossians.

  11. So I'm thankful that we went through this book.

  12. And I think there's a lot in this passage that we're about to read that relate to us.

  13. And so, Lord willing, we can draw even more with the last one today.

  14. So I'm going to read verses 7 to the end, and then we'll dive in.

  15. I'll kind of explain what I think the meat of this passage is.

  16. So, Colossians chapter 4, starting verse 7, it says,

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  17. They will tell you of everything that has taken place here.

  18. And see that you also read the letter from Laodicea.

  19. For I bear witness that he has worked hard for you and for those in Laodicea and in Hierapolis.

  20. Luke, the beloved physician, greets you, as does Demas.

  21. Give my greetings to the brothers at Laodicea and to Nympha and the church in her house.

  22. And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also to the church of the Laodiceans.

  23. And see that you also read the letter from Laodicea.

  24. And say to Archippus, see that you fulfill the ministry that you have received in the Lord.

  25. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand.

  26. Remember my chains.

  27. Grace be with you.

  28. Okay, so this is God's word to finish out Paul's letter to the Colossians.

  29. And, you know, at first, reading through the text, this can kind of seem like dismissive or non-important.

  30. Kind of just sounds like Paul saying, say hi to so-and-so and say hi to this guy.

  31. And this guy says hi to you.

  32. Grace and peace, you know.

  33. It's kind of like, okay, we get it.

  34. You know, it's kind of like reading the, you know, the genealogies.

  35. It's just a bunch of names.

  36. It's like, what's the meaning behind this?

  37. And initially, when I first read it, that was my thought.

  38. I'm like, how the heck is this important?

  39. But I think it's 2 Timothy 3 says that all scripture is breathed out by God.

  40. And it's profitable for teaching and reproving and instruction.

  41. So as I read this and I looked at all these names and I was thinking about why and how Paul was talking,

  42. I think this is very relevant not only to our church but to many churches.

  43. And it teaches us about what the relationship between one another can look like, especially in an apostolic way.

  44. And so I went ahead and titled this message,

  45. The Necessity for Apostolic Kinship.

  46. The Necessity for Apostolic Kinship.

  47. And I'll explain why I said that.

  48. A little bit of a Brian kind of title there.

  49. But the reason I chose to title this The Necessity for Apostolic Kinship is because what I think lies in the text here is very much what kinship embodies.

  50. And honestly, what the apostolic, what we're doing, embodies as well.

  51. And so here's what I mean by that.

  52. So apostolic or apostleship, the word apostle literally just means sent one or sent person, messenger or envoy.

  53. So when something is apostolic, it in large part is referring to either relating to the apostles or just being sent out by God purposefully.

  54. So the necessity for a apostolic kinship refers to a body that is sent out, but not just a body or a people, but one that is kin.

  55. And the word kin literally just means blood relationship.

  56. And obviously, all of us are not literally bound by blood.

  57. We all come from different families and that sort of thing.

  58. But I do believe that there is a huge deficit in the church today of family found in the church body.

  59. And so when you talk about kinship, the reason I chose the word is because the body of Christ united through the body and blood of Jesus Christ should be more than just blood.

  60. It should be greater.

  61. And when we think naturally about family and blood relationship, we immediately think of the closeness.

  62. You know, you're close with your family members.

  63. Even if you have a bad relationship with your family or you don't feel close, your family is inescapable.

  64. You're bound to them as long as you live.

  65. They're there.

  66. They're your family.

  67. You can't abort them.

  68. You can't divorce them.

  69. They're always there.

  70. So there's this type of non-severing with kinship, which I think we should value in the body of Christ.

  71. Because if we are members of one another through Jesus, then we cannot separate ourselves from one another.

  72. So the necessity for apostolic kinship.

  73. I'm going to walk through the passage and explain how I think for our church this would be extremely beneficial.

  74. And that if we were to abort this, would be aborting God's mission to the church.

  75. Or more specifically, God's witness through the church.

  76. So a little bit of my aim, and before we get into the passage, is to show how the apostolic team that Paul lays out through all those names, those guys are his apostolic co-workers.

  77. He calls them beloved brothers, servants.

  78. So my aim is to show how the biblical apostolic team looks more like kinship or family than it does anything else.

  79. It looks more like that than it does just partners, you know, somewhat like business, or just kind of working alongside each other.

  80. And then when we're done, we're like, see ya.

  81. It looks more like family than it does anything else.

  82. And that in addition to that, as much as we are united through the body and blood of Jesus will prove to be how much we are family.

  83. How much we believe that.

  84. And so more and more churches today in America have been found with the, you know, entrepreneurial type spirit.

  85. The kind of American dream at its core resulting in what I think is winning to people, to everything else, but Jesus himself.

  86. And no, I don't think that all churches are rotten to the core.

  87. But I think fundamentally there's something missing that teaches people about God and about the body that he died for.

  88. So, you know, in churches today, they might be one with, or one to a handful of things.

  89. It might be new habits, new ways of life, maybe a self-help if you're struggling.

  90. It might be one to friendships or even positions of influence.

  91. I could go on.

  92. But, however, to find a church that is zealous for the kinship found between men like Paul and Timothy, or Jesus and John, you know, intimate relationship.

  93. Or even his disciples, where the scriptures say that their hearts burned within them as they walked along the road.

  94. So, that type of kind of connection, that type of burning in relationship, to find that seems really rare nowadays.

  95. And so, we're at the precipice of getting established at Christ Church here, and this has got to be at its core.

  96. And so, I assure you that if that kind of church is planted, the kind that is zealous for that relationship, that it will be characterized by the life of Christ himself.

  97. It will look like God living through his people incarnationally.

  98. And I believe that the church must return fundamentally to the confession that looks a lot like, you know, the song we sing, A Mighty Fortress.

  99. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also.

  100. The body they may kill, God's truth abides still.

  101. His kingdom is forever.

  102. I think that when we are a united people, we are looking like God, which is sacrificing our lives for one another.

  103. There is more power in a group of people that is willing to die for one another than there is any individual articulate of any business model for church ever.

  104. And I think that that's valuable.

  105. So, let's get into the text.

  106. And I'm hoping that from what all I just articulated to you, that you'll see that a little bit and even imagine how Paul would relate to his coworkers maybe in that view.

  107. So, quite a handful of names here throughout this passage, but we're going to kind of just go through from the top.

  108. And right off the bat, it talks about Tychicus being the messenger or the agent that's delivering this letter, it seems.

  109. Because Paul says, Tychicus will tell you all about my activities.

  110. I have sent, in verse 8, it says, I have sent him to you for this purpose.

  111. So, Paul is sending Tychicus as the kind of messenger to deliver these things.

  112. Trustworthy enough for that.

  113. We first meet Tychicus.

  114. I hope I'm saying his name right.

  115. I hope most of these names are...

  116. I listened to him early this week and I was like, I think I got it.

  117. We first meet him in Acts 20, verse 4, where we see him as one of Paul's companions traveling to Corinth.

    Acts 20:4

  118. Or sorry, from Corinth to Jerusalem.

  119. Tychicus is a native to Asia, which is today Asia Minor.

  120. Tychicus, we really don't have much on with what the New Testament gives us, but he's trustworthy, according to Paul, to deliver his letters.

  121. And he has the same language, actually, for Tychicus in Ephesians 6, as he does in Colossians 4 here, which is,

  122. Tychicus, the beloved and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything.

  123. So, something about him, something about Tychicus' life with Paul was trustworthy enough.

  124. Maybe he just observed everything.

  125. He's like, this guy is responsible for informing you guys of how we are, and we'll do a good job to explain that.

  126. So, he's a trustworthy guy.

  127. But he doesn't just send him with a mere purpose to deliver the letter.

  128. He sends him with two purposes.

  129. One, to tell you how we are, he says, but also that he may encourage your hearts.

  130. So, Tychicus might be especially gifted in this, gift of encouragement, which is valuable and useful to Paul.

  131. So, he's saying, send this guy so that they'll get a little boost or refreshment.

  132. And with Tychicus, it says in verse 9, if you scroll down,

  133. With him, Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you.

  134. Because the church at Colossae is largely Gentile, I believe the phrase, he is one of you, is meaning Gentile, versus merely just one of you as in he's a Christian as well.

  135. I think it's a little bit more meaningful to that church by saying he is like one of you in his descent Gentile.

  136. But one thing about Onesimus is that Onesimus was not saved the whole time, at least it seems, because Onesimus was the fugitive slave of Philemon, which is one of Paul's friends.

  137. And Onesimus actually robbed Philemon and fleed to Rome to escape from him, but providentially ran into Paul while he was in prison there.

  138. So, Onesimus was thinking, I'm going to rob Philemon and get out of here.

  139. I'll be good.

  140. But God saw it fit for him to connect with Paul by circumstance in Rome.

  141. And Paul availed himself of the opportunity there to preach the gospel to Onesimus.

  142. So much to where Paul in Philemon, if you go back and look, it says that he became his son in the faith.

  143. And Paul doesn't use that language in many places.

  144. He uses it with Timothy.

  145. In different spots, he calls Timothy his son, but he also calls Onesimus his son.

  146. So not only was Onesimus not a believer, but he ran into Paul and so much to where Paul led him to Christ and now can call him his son.

  147. Notice the familial language there.

  148. You know, I think it even says, my child Onesimus.

  149. I appeal to you for my child Onesimus.

  150. That's very familial.

  151. And that's in Philemon.

  152. We're in Colossians and here, when Paul introduces each person, he calls them faithful, but he also calls them beloved brothers.

  153. You know, that's more than just coworkers.

  154. Coworkers is not, you know, to diminish that fact.

  155. They are that, but he calls them brethren.

  156. And so some think that, like I said before, that Onesimus came to Christ before he was already in Colossae and maybe he was just kind of a struggling Christian.

  157. And then he was born again by being led to Christ by Paul in his imprisonment.

  158. Given that Paul says, I appeal to you for my son, or my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains.

  159. Formerly, he was useless to you.

  160. This is Philemon.

  161. Or Paul speaking in the letter to Philemon.

  162. Formerly, he was useless to you, but now he's useful to both you and me.

  163. So formerly, he was kind of saying he was just a slave, not useful.

  164. But now that he's come to Christ and I have fathered him, he's very useful to you.

  165. And actually, if you read the book of Philemon, Paul is kind of in turmoil.

  166. Well, not in turmoil, I guess you should say.

  167. He doesn't really want to send Onesimus because he has such a benefit from him.

  168. But he knows it would be good for him to go back.

  169. And he urges them to receive him not as a slave, but as a brother in Christ.

  170. So even there, you see it after Onesimus' conversion.

  171. He says, relate to him not as a slave, but as a brother.

  172. There's the familiar language again.

  173. So with him, Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you,

  174. they will tell you everything that has taken place.

  175. So both Tychicus and Onesimus are partners in that work.

  176. And then in verse 10, he introduces another character, Aristarchus,

  177. who he calls his fellow prisoners.

  178. We know that he was in prison with Paul.

  179. He was walking through the struggle with him.

  180. And Mark, the cousin of Barnabas, concerning whom you have received instructions.

  181. If he comes to you, welcome him.

  182. Very briefly on Aristarchus, he's mentioned in the book of Acts

  183. during one of the riots in Ephesus.

  184. Paul preaches, I don't know if you remember, Paul preaches to,

  185. I think it's Demetrius, one of the idol makers.

  186. He's a metal worker making idols.

  187. Artemis is one of the false gods that was really propagated in Ephesus.

  188. And Paul preached to Demetrius, kind of stirred up the crowd.

  189. And I think Paul escaped, but they seize Aristarchus,

  190. named mentioned right here, and then Trophimus, another companion.

  191. So he's mentioned there in Acts.

  192. But there's not a ton on Aristarchus.

  193. Most of these guys, there's really not much.

  194. The most is probably like three times some of these people are mentioned

  195. in the whole New Testament.

  196. But Paul seems to really commend them in his letters,

  197. or seems it fit to mention their names.

  198. You know, you have to remember, this letter is being read to an entire church.

  199. Not sure what the size of the church is.

  200. Not only Colossae, but actually two churches, the church at Laodicea.

  201. So he's specifically naming these people who seem to maybe have a sphere of influence.

  202. But if not that, they're very dear to Paul, and they should be dear to us.

  203. John Mark.

  204. So in verse 10, it says,

  205. Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, greets you, and Mark, the cousin of Barnabas,

  206. concerning whom you have received instructions.

  207. If he comes to you, welcome him.

  208. Mark, or known as John Mark, is first mentioned in Acts 12, the cousin of Barnabas.

  209. And he is a companion of Barnabas and Paul on their first missionary journey.

  210. They're sent out together and start preaching the gospel.

  211. I think Cyprus is the first place that they hit.

  212. And then after Cyprus, we see in a peculiar way,

  213. it says that John Mark left them in Pamphylia,

  214. which is right after their time in Cyprus.

  215. And people dispute why he left.

  216. Some people say, you know,

  217. scholars say maybe because of the fruitlessness in Cyprus,

  218. there was only one recorded conversion,

  219. that they were pretty discouraged.

  220. So John Mark, maybe he was like,

  221. I'm going home, guys.

  222. I'm done.

  223. We're not really sure.

  224. Maybe he had business to take care of.

  225. That was too much that he had to go back.

  226. We don't know.

  227. But he left in Acts 13 in Pamphylia.

  228. And in Acts 15, if you go,

  229. he appears again on Paul's second missionary journey,

  230. about to leave with Barnabas.

  231. But this time, Barnabas was like,

  232. we should take John Mark with us on our second go around.

  233. But Paul said, no, John Mark is unreliable.

  234. Something about John Mark leaving the missionary journey the first time

  235. did something to Paul that showed him that John Mark was not fit.

  236. It was kind of a disqualifier.

  237. And again, we don't know why John Mark left.

  238. It could have been something akin to, you know,

  239. Aunt Debbie's funeral.

  240. Got to go home, make a good showing with the family.

  241. But, you know, Paul is a very radical missionary.

  242. And I can imagine him saying something like,

  243. let the dead bury their own, John Mark.

  244. You know, not to say that he wasn't letting him go.

  245. He did let him leave.

  246. But I think it's important to note that

  247. Paul has a view of the apostolic ministry

  248. as not for the faint of heart.

  249. And if someone is going to leave,

  250. then they're not so easily let back in.

  251. There is qualifiers for doing the work.

  252. I'm going to touch more on that later.

  253. But we see that with John Mark.

  254. We see that with Paul in Acts 15.

  255. It says that he said that John Mark was not fit to come back.

  256. And then John Mark, it says that there arose a sharp disagreement.

  257. So they butted heads about that.

  258. You know, it wasn't just like, yeah, I'll stay behind.

  259. It was probably more like, no, you're not seeing this right.

  260. I should come because X, Y, and Z.

  261. And Paul's like, no, you're not fit.

  262. Whatever, sharp disagreement.

  263. So what ends up happening is Paul doesn't take Barnabas with him.

  264. Barnabas and John Mark actually leave together

  265. to go on their own separate way.

  266. And Paul takes Silas instead.

  267. So Paul acquires a new companion,

  268. even after the time that he was with Barnabas.

  269. It's interesting.

  270. You don't see Paul forfeiting Barnabas,

  271. or sorry, forfeiting his position to not take John Mark

  272. at the expense of his companion Barnabas.

  273. He says, you know what, Barnabas,

  274. if you want to leave too, that's fine.

  275. I'll take Silas with me.

  276. He has a rigidity to his decision and his apostolic way.

  277. And I think that's important to note

  278. because so much of the church nowadays,

  279. we're talking about the apostolic.

  280. We're talking about church being sent down.

  281. That's the language that we see here

  282. and what this church is.

  283. So it's important to note that we have to draw from that.

  284. We have to look at Paul's way of life,

  285. how he sees people who are committed to his work,

  286. as well as one another,

  287. how we see people committed to this work that we're doing.

  288. And at bare minimum,

  289. say that church planning is not whimsical.

  290. You can't come and go as you please.

  291. That doesn't mean that church planning is covenantal,

  292. meaning that you're going to be severed

  293. if you break the covenant.

  294. You can go.

  295. But according to Paul,

  296. it's very serious.

  297. You know,

  298. let goods and kindred go.

  299. You know,

  300. this mortal life also.

  301. Paul realizes that doing this work

  302. could result in the death of his own life

  303. and his companions.

  304. But he's down.

  305. You know,

  306. he says in another passage,

  307. I know whom I have believed.

  308. You know,

  309. he saw the Lord.

  310. He was convinced

  311. that his life was totally worth sacrificing

  312. and even the life of his,

  313. his fellow workers.

  314. So.

  315. I really think it's,

  316. it's,

  317. it's valuable to see that discourse with John Mark,

  318. because I do believe that what John Mark experiences

  319. and what happened with Barnabas

  320. and how Paul dealt with it happens all the time,

  321. not in practice or practical outflowing merely,

  322. but in our thoughts,

  323. how committed we are to the work.

  324. How much do we trust God's call on us

  325. to fulfill the ministry?

  326. If we're constantly wrestling in our minds with,

  327. is this a good idea?

  328. Oh man,

  329. I really missed the comforts of home

  330. or wouldn't it be better to go back to Egypt?

  331. This kind of mentality.

  332. This doesn't work for,

  333. for apostolic ministry.

  334. It's,

  335. it's duplicitous at the worst

  336. and will hinder the kinship

  337. between one another.

  338. So that's why I mentioned John Marks,

  339. because although it's such a small thing,

  340. you know,

  341. he left,

  342. there's a disagreement,

  343. they move on.

  344. I think there's a lot there.

  345. And I think that many churches

  346. and his congregants

  347. see church

  348. as something to where,

  349. you know,

  350. if I,

  351. if I find a good church,

  352. good,

  353. but I could get up and leave at any moment,

  354. you know,

  355. and there is a little bit more pressure

  356. when we talk about church planning

  357. versus just church attendance.

  358. There is a distinction.

  359. So don't misunderstand me

  360. when I'm talking about anyone,

  361. but

  362. for Christchurch,

  363. this is very applicable

  364. because we are sent ones.

  365. We came from Bellicose.

  366. We were sent out for a specific work

  367. and we're on the precipice

  368. of just getting going.

  369. So this is very relevant.

  370. So

  371. please see that.

  372. My prayer is that you see that

  373. in the word of God

  374. and

  375. we should draw from that.

  376. So that's John Mark.

  377. Paul says in verse 11 that,

  378. or sorry,

  379. after that,

  380. there's a guy named

  381. Jesus,

  382. not the main Jesus.

  383. It's also called Justice.

  384. And then he says,

  385. these are the only men

  386. of the circumcision

  387. among my fellow workers

  388. for the kingdom of God.

  389. So all the names

  390. that we just read

  391. seem to be

  392. Jews

  393. or seem to be,

  394. you know,

  395. men of the circumcision.

  396. And he said,

  397. and Paul said that

  398. they've been a comfort to me.

  399. Maybe it's just

  400. who they were,

  401. their character

  402. that was a comfort.

  403. Maybe it's the fact that

  404. they were kin to him,

  405. you know,

  406. of the same tribe.

  407. Not sure.

  408. But in one way,

  409. we know that they comforted him.

  410. And then we introduced

  411. a guy named Epaphras

  412. who Paul says

  413. in verse 12,

  414. is one of you

  415. a servant of Christ Jesus.

  416. He greets you

  417. always struggling

  418. in his prayers

  419. or on your behalf

  420. in his prayers

  421. that you may stand mature

  422. and fully assured

  423. in all the will of God.

  424. For I bear him witness

  425. that he has worked hard for you

  426. and for those in Laodicea

  427. and Hierapolis.

  428. So Epaphras,

  429. he says,

  430. one of you,

  431. again,

  432. I think he's probably saying

  433. Epaphras is Gentile

  434. like you guys

  435. at Colossae.

  436. Epaphras is likely

  437. the one

  438. who planted

  439. the church

  440. at Colossae.

  441. If you go back

  442. to chapter one,

  443. Paul is commending them

  444. for receiving

  445. the word

  446. delivered

  447. by

  448. Epaphras.

  449. Epaphras

  450. was the first person

  451. to preach

  452. the word

  453. to them

  454. and so began

  455. the church

  456. at Colossae.

  457. This could mean

  458. that Epaphras

  459. was recognized

  460. as an apostle

  461. by Paul as well.

  462. We're not sure.

  463. He seems to have

  464. the lingo

  465. of Paul.

  466. If you look at

  467. how Paul talks

  468. about him

  469. in verse 12 here,

  470. it says that

  471. he's got

  472. two things.

  473. One,

  474. he's always

  475. struggling

  476. struggling

  477. on your behalf

  478. in his prayers.

  479. Very interesting

  480. phrase,

  481. you know,

  482. to characterize

  483. somebody.

  484. He works hard

  485. in prayer.

  486. He's an intercessor,

  487. you know,

  488. and he struggles

  489. too.

  490. He doesn't just

  491. put in half

  492. the effort.

  493. He struggles.

  494. He wrestles.

  495. But to what end?

  496. Why does Epaphras

  497. struggle?

  498. It says,

  499. so that you

  500. may stand

  501. mature

  502. and fully

  503. assured

  504. in all

  505. the will

  506. of God.

  507. That's pretty

  508. awesome because

  509. if you go back

  510. to Colossians

  511. 1 down

  512. to verse 28,

  513. we hear Paul

  514. say,

  515. him we proclaim,

  516. talking about

  517. Jesus,

  518. warning everyone

  519. and teaching

  520. everyone

  521. with all

  522. wisdom that

  523. we may present

  524. everyone mature

  525. in Christ.

  526. And then he

  527. says in 29,

  528. for this I toil,

  529. struggling with

  530. all his energy

  531. that he powerfully

  532. works within me.

  533. Same language.

  534. Paul says he

  535. struggles.

  536. He's struggling

  537. with all

  538. Christ's energy

  539. within him.

  540. Why?

  541. Why does he

  542. say that?

  543. To what end?

  544. Go back

  545. in the verse.

  546. So that we

  547. may present

  548. everyone mature

  549. in Christ.

  550. Okay?

  551. This character

  552. recognizes Paul.

  553. Paul struggles

  554. and Epaphras

  555. as well

  556. in his prayers.

  557. They struggle,

  558. but to what end?

  559. Both of them

  560. see the same

  561. goal,

  562. which is to

  563. present you

  564. mature

  565. and make you

  566. fully assured

  567. of all the

  568. will of God.

  569. When we're

  570. talking about

  571. building a

  572. church,

  573. how did

  574. they build?

  575. How did

  576. Paul build?

  577. How did

  578. Epaphras build?

  579. And they

  580. did it by

  581. working hard

  582. with a

  583. struggle,

  584. and they

  585. did it with

  586. the goal

  587. of maturity.

  588. So everyone

  589. in this room

  590. to one degree

  591. or another

  592. has level

  593. maturity.

  594. Some are

  595. more mature

  596. than others,

  597. and some

  598. people in

  599. this room

  600. are already

  601. at work

  602. to that

  603. end,

  604. but it's

  605. good for us

  606. to look at

  607. the Word

  608. of God

  609. and say

  610. this is

  611. why we

  612. struggle

  613. for one

  614. another,

  615. so that we

  616. might actually

  617. be mature,

  618. not infants,

  619. as it says

  620. in other

  621. places,

  622. but as

  623. adults,

  624. you know,

  625. in the

  626. faith.

  627. we see

  628. that Epaphras

  629. has that

  630. mantle,

  631. that he

  632. shares that

  633. with Paul,

  634. he's locked

  635. in on the

  636. vision of

  637. that,

  638. and I

  639. just want

  640. to kind

  641. of hone

  642. in on

  643. the unity

  644. between Epaphras

  645. that you

  646. can see

  647. there,

  648. even in

  649. the language

  650. struggling,

  651. presenting

  652. mature,

  653. the unity

  654. that we

  655. should strive

  656. to have.

  657. Earlier

  658. this week,

  659. I

  660. went out

  661. with some

  662. guys,

  663. Judah was

  664. with me,

  665. we went

  666. to a

  667. young

  668. adults

  669. ministry

  670. in the

  671. city,

  672. some of

  673. our other

  674. guys were

  675. with us,

  676. some people

  677. there,

  678. and went

  679. down just

  680. to meet

  681. people,

  682. but with

  683. also the

  684. intent of

  685. mission to

  686. reach some

  687. people who

  688. maybe don't

  689. know God,

  690. but are

  691. affiliated with

  692. church,

  693. very big

  694. young adult

  695. ministry,

  696. a lot of

  697. people there,

  698. and as I

  699. was talking

  700. to one

  701. of the

  702. guys,

  703. who was

  704. actually a

  705. leader at

  706. this ministry,

  707. he was

  708. asking a lot

  709. about Christ

  710. church,

  711. kind of

  712. where we

  713. are,

  714. how we

  715. are doing,

  716. I was

  717. asking about

  718. his life,

  719. and then I

  720. started to

  721. articulate how

  722. we are still

  723. building the

  724. foundation,

  725. and how

  726. family is a

  727. big aspect

  728. of that,

  729. and I

  730. talked about

  731. the need

  732. for paternal

  733. presence,

  734. or the

  735. presence of

  736. fathers in

  737. the life of

  738. the church,

  739. and we

  740. eventually got

  741. down the

  742. road to

  743. me asking

  744. them,

  745. do you

  746. think,

  747. either in

  748. the past

  749. or presently,

  750. that you

  751. have

  752. experienced

  753. being

  754. fathered

  755. by someone

  756. in this

  757. church,

  758. or another

  759. church in

  760. the past,

  761. and he's

  762. like,

  763. I don't

  764. know,

  765. I don't

  766. think so,

  767. and knowing

  768. what I know,

  769. I was shocked,

  770. because I'm

  771. like,

  772. oh my gosh,

  773. this guy is

  774. just,

  775. you know,

  776. riding off of

  777. who knows

  778. what,

  779. mentors,

  780. influencers,

  781. all those things

  782. are good,

  783. but Paul says

  784. you have many

  785. of those,

  786. but you don't

  787. have many

  788. fathers,

  789. that's the

  790. rebuke,

  791. you know,

  792. to a church

  793. that has no

  794. paternal presence,

  795. is you have

  796. guys,

  797. you have

  798. mentors,

  799. you have

  800. instructors,

  801. but you

  802. don't have

  803. many fathers,

  804. Paul said

  805. that he

  806. became a

  807. father through

  808. the gospel,

  809. so the way

  810. that we do

  811. that is

  812. through the

  813. gospel,

  814. but that has

  815. to be an

  816. aim,

  817. a little

  818. tangent

  819. there,

  820. where were

  821. we,

  822. I was just

  823. talking about

  824. Epaphras,

  825. oh yeah,

  826. so the goal

  827. is maturity,

  828. that's the

  829. goal of every

  830. church,

  831. so we might

  832. present its

  833. members to

  834. saints mature,

  835. you know,

  836. we can really

  837. forget that

  838. sometimes,

  839. we go week

  840. by week,

  841. and it's

  842. kind of just

  843. like,

  844. there's a lot

  845. of responsibilities,

  846. a lot of

  847. things to do,

  848. but are we

  849. growing in

  850. our maturity

  851. in Christ,

  852. and maturity

  853. towards one

  854. another,

  855. and that

  856. should be

  857. our aim,

  858. so moving

  859. on,

  860. it says

  861. in verse

  862. 13,

  863. for I bear

  864. him witness

  865. that he

  866. has worked

  867. hard for

  868. you,

  869. talking about

  870. Epaphras,

  871. and for

  872. those in

  873. Laodicea and

  874. Hierapolis,

  875. verse 14,

  876. it says,

  877. Luke,

  878. the beloved

  879. physician,

  880. greets you

  881. as does

  882. Demas,

  883. give my

  884. greetings to

  885. the brothers

  886. at Laodicea

  887. and to

  888. Nympha

  889. and the

  890. church in

  891. her house,

  892. I'm not

  893. going to go

  894. into much

  895. about Luke

  896. and Demas,

  897. but Luke

  898. is the

  899. author of

  900. Acts,

  901. so he

  902. was there

  903. for a lot

  904. of it,

  905. you know,

  906. Demas is

  907. mentioned

  908. two other

  909. places,

  910. one in

  911. Philemon

  912. and one

  913. in 2

  914. Timothy,

  915. the one

  916. in 2

  917. Timothy not

  918. being a

  919. very good

  920. light,

  921. Paul says

  922. that Demas

  923. has forsaken

  924. me in love

  925. with this

  926. present world,

  927. so it's

  928. very possible

  929. that I

  930. don't think

  931. Demas is

  932. apostate

  933. in that

  934. section as

  935. much as

  936. Paul sees

  937. him as

  938. taken up

  939. with other

  940. things,

  941. you know,

  942. maybe he

  943. got a

  944. sweet job

  945. offer,

  946. and he's

  947. like,

  948. sorry,

  949. Paul,

  950. I'm

  951. going to

  952. take this,

  953. and Paul's

  954. like,

  955. what the

  956. heck,

  957. you know,

  958. why are you

  959. in love

  960. with the

  961. world,

  962. we've been

  963. doing this

  964. forever,

  965. you know,

  966. we don't

  967. know much,

  968. but we

  969. do know

  970. that about

  971. Demas,

  972. and we

  973. do know

  974. that Paul,

  975. again,

  976. with Paul's

  977. zealous,

  978. rigorous view

  979. of apostleship,

  980. that he sees

  981. something maybe

  982. like that as

  983. you're in love

  984. with the world,

  985. Demas,

  986. you know,

  987. you've got

  988. things out of

  989. priority,

  990. and let us

  991. not be like

  992. Demas,

  993. you know,

  994. whether in

  995. small or

  996. in great.

  997. It's important

  998. to realize

  999. that everything

  1000. that Satan

  1001. works is crafty,

  1002. and begins in

  1003. small increments,

  1004. doesn't happen

  1005. all at once,

  1006. and we must be

  1007. on guard,

  1008. the love of the

  1009. world,

  1010. and other

  1011. things that

  1012. slip in,

  1013. especially at

  1014. the beginning

  1015. of a church

  1016. plant.

  1017. Satan would

  1018. love to devise

  1019. in our hearts

  1020. love for other

  1021. things,

  1022. and distract

  1023. us from

  1024. the work.

  1025. You know,

  1026. I might beat

  1027. a dead horse

  1028. by saying

  1029. that,

  1030. but we

  1031. don't wrestle

  1032. with what we

  1033. can see,

  1034. with flesh

  1035. and blood,

  1036. the scriptures

  1037. say.

  1038. So we

  1039. have to be

  1040. focused on

  1041. what God

  1042. has said.

  1043. That is the

  1044. only way that

  1045. we walk

  1046. with sight,

  1047. in a sense,

  1048. is we can

  1049. see what God

  1050. has said,

  1051. and we can

  1052. follow him,

  1053. believing in

  1054. faith that he

  1055. rewards those

  1056. who seek

  1057. him,

  1058. right?

  1059. So Luke,

  1060. the beloved

  1061. physician,

  1062. greets you

  1063. as does

  1064. Demas.

  1065. Give my

  1066. greetings to

  1067. the brothers

  1068. at Laodicea

  1069. and to

  1070. Nympha

  1071. and the

  1072. church in

  1073. her house.

  1074. A little

  1075. shout out

  1076. to the

  1077. ladies.

  1078. Nympha

  1079. seemed to

  1080. be a

  1081. prominent

  1082. enough woman

  1083. to get

  1084. her name

  1085. put in

  1086. the letter,

  1087. but we

  1088. also see

  1089. that she

  1090. was likely

  1091. very hospitable.

  1092. the church

  1093. in her

  1094. house.

  1095. She would

  1096. have

  1097. gatherings

  1098. of prayer

  1099. or at

  1100. least some

  1101. type of

  1102. gatherings.

  1103. I forgot

  1104. to mention

  1105. this about

  1106. John Mark,

  1107. but John

  1108. Mark's mom,

  1109. Mary,

  1110. also was

  1111. mentioned

  1112. in Acts

  1113. as one

  1114. who regularly

  1115. had people

  1116. gather in

  1117. her house

  1118. for prayer,

  1119. which is

  1120. also mentioned.

  1121. so the

  1122. women in

  1123. the church

  1124. seem to

  1125. be of

  1126. prominent

  1127. standing for

  1128. Paul to

  1129. mention as

  1130. well.

  1131. And then

  1132. it says,

  1133. and when

  1134. this letter

  1135. is read

  1136. or has

  1137. been read

  1138. among you,

  1139. have it

  1140. also read

  1141. to the

  1142. church of

  1143. the Laodiceans

  1144. and see

  1145. that you

  1146. also read

  1147. the letter

  1148. from the

  1149. Laodicea.

  1150. last

  1151. character

  1152. here

  1153. in verse

  1154. 17,

  1155. that's

  1156. mentioned.

  1157. It says,

  1158. and say

  1159. to Archippus,

  1160. see that

  1161. you fulfill

  1162. the ministry

  1163. that you

  1164. have received

  1165. from the

  1166. Lord.

  1167. Okay,

  1168. this phrase

  1169. is,

  1170. I think,

  1171. one of the

  1172. more

  1173. prophetic

  1174. phrases

  1175. that we

  1176. could draw

  1177. from this

  1178. passage for

  1179. Christ's

  1180. church today,

  1181. right now,

  1182. because we

  1183. are a

  1184. collective

  1185. group with

  1186. callings and

  1187. giftings.

  1188. And Paul

  1189. singles out

  1190. one guy,

  1191. Archippus,

  1192. mentioned two

  1193. other places

  1194. very briefly

  1195. and says,

  1196. hey,

  1197. say to this

  1198. guy,

  1199. fulfill what

  1200. you're called

  1201. to do.

  1202. What was

  1203. Archippus called

  1204. to do?

  1205. Nobody knows.

  1206. Apparently,

  1207. Paul does,

  1208. though,

  1209. and Archippus.

  1210. And he calls

  1211. him out and

  1212. says,

  1213. hey,

  1214. you remember

  1215. this?

  1216. Remember how

  1217. God anointed

  1218. you to do

  1219. this?

  1220. Remember how

  1221. you're gifted?

  1222. Remember how

  1223. you minister

  1224. in this way?

  1225. Do it.

  1226. You know,

  1227. maybe Archippus

  1228. was dragging

  1229. his feet.

  1230. Maybe he got

  1231. discouraged,

  1232. whatever.

  1233. Paul has

  1234. enough boldness

  1235. and apostolic

  1236. authority to

  1237. say,

  1238. look,

  1239. dude,

  1240. I was there

  1241. for that,

  1242. and you

  1243. know what

  1244. you're called

  1245. to do.

  1246. And you

  1247. can do it.

  1248. By the grace

  1249. of the Lord,

  1250. you can fulfill

  1251. your calling

  1252. because God

  1253. literally supplies

  1254. you.

  1255. He makes up

  1256. your constitution

  1257. with the

  1258. giftings that

  1259. he assigns

  1260. and gives you

  1261. grace to do

  1262. it.

  1263. So he's

  1264. saying,

  1265. remember that

  1266. and fulfill

  1267. it.

  1268. And I can

  1269. only imagine

  1270. what it was

  1271. like maybe

  1272. to be Archippus

  1273. and have that

  1274. read to the

  1275. church and

  1276. have his name

  1277. called out.

  1278. Maybe he was

  1279. like,

  1280. geez,

  1281. Paul,

  1282. I get it.

  1283. I'll get

  1284. going.

  1285. But in

  1286. addition,

  1287. you have to

  1288. remember,

  1289. Paul's a

  1290. father.

  1291. He's not

  1292. just like

  1293. an angry

  1294. boss that

  1295. calls you

  1296. out.

  1297. He's a

  1298. father.

  1299. So I

  1300. imagine

  1301. that Paul,

  1302. with his

  1303. fatherly

  1304. tone,

  1305. and Archippus

  1306. knowing about

  1307. Paul's

  1308. fatherly

  1309. tone,

  1310. can receive

  1311. that saying,

  1312. I know

  1313. Paul loves

  1314. me.

  1315. I know

  1316. he's there

  1317. for me.

  1318. And he's

  1319. encouraging me

  1320. and rebuking

  1321. me like a

  1322. son.

  1323. And I'm

  1324. sure you

  1325. guys have

  1326. many people

  1327. in your

  1328. life that

  1329. if they

  1330. said something

  1331. like that

  1332. to you,

  1333. you'd be

  1334. like,

  1335. get out

  1336. of here,

  1337. man.

  1338. You don't

  1339. even know

  1340. me.

  1341. Get off

  1342. my back.

  1343. But there's

  1344. also people

  1345. that would

  1346. say the

  1347. same thing,

  1348. that you

  1349. would be

  1350. humble and

  1351. sober and

  1352. you would

  1353. say thank

  1354. you.

  1355. Because of

  1356. that equity,

  1357. because of

  1358. the familial

  1359. tie,

  1360. the relational

  1361. kind of

  1362. substance

  1363. between

  1364. each other.

  1365. You know

  1366. what I mean?

  1367. This has

  1368. got to be

  1369. present.

  1370. It's got to

  1371. be somewhere

  1372. in there

  1373. as he's

  1374. speaking.

  1375. And so

  1376. he says

  1377. say to

  1378. him,

  1379. see that

  1380. you fulfill

  1381. the ministry

  1382. of the

  1383. Lord.

  1384. that you

  1385. have

  1386. received

  1387. in the

  1388. Lord.

  1389. I don't

  1390. know if

  1391. you guys

  1392. remember,

  1393. this is

  1394. very similar

  1395. to Paul

  1396. saying to

  1397. Timothy,

  1398. guard the

  1399. deposit

  1400. entrusted

  1401. to you.

  1402. It was

  1403. given to

  1404. you by

  1405. the laying

  1406. on of

  1407. hands.

  1408. Very

  1409. similar.

  1410. He calls

  1411. him out

  1412. and says,

  1413. hey,

  1414. Timothy,

  1415. guard that.

  1416. Just like

  1417. that.

  1418. That tone

  1419. he's saying

  1420. to Archippus,

  1421. see that you

  1422. fulfill the

  1423. ministry.

  1424. Which

  1425. fulfill here

  1426. literally means

  1427. to fill

  1428. up.

  1429. It doesn't

  1430. mean just

  1431. do a

  1432. bunch,

  1433. but actually

  1434. let your

  1435. life be

  1436. full.

  1437. Let the

  1438. calling that

  1439. God has

  1440. impressed,

  1441. the area

  1442. that God

  1443. has impressed

  1444. and gifted

  1445. you,

  1446. let it

  1447. fill up

  1448. your life.

  1449. Don't let

  1450. it lack.

  1451. And there's

  1452. much to be

  1453. said about

  1454. our giftings,

  1455. our callings,

  1456. and how we

  1457. relate to

  1458. one another.

  1459. But one

  1460. thing for

  1461. sure is

  1462. that it

  1463. must be

  1464. full.

  1465. If we

  1466. know them,

  1467. some of us

  1468. don't know

  1469. them very

  1470. well,

  1471. and that's

  1472. where we

  1473. got to

  1474. start to

  1475. take aim

  1476. and use

  1477. the other

  1478. parts of

  1479. the body

  1480. to be

  1481. like,

  1482. how am

  1483. I gifted?

  1484. How has

  1485. God called

  1486. me?

  1487. But some

  1488. of us know

  1489. how we're

  1490. called,

  1491. but we're

  1492. not fulfilling,

  1493. we're not

  1494. filling up.

  1495. and maybe

  1496. you need a

  1497. fatherly figure

  1498. to just help

  1499. you along

  1500. and say,

  1501. hey,

  1502. fulfill the

  1503. ministry.

  1504. You've

  1505. received it

  1506. from the

  1507. Lord,

  1508. I'll go

  1509. out and

  1510. do it.

  1511. And we

  1512. can't be

  1513. idle in

  1514. that.

  1515. So after

  1516. Paul caps

  1517. it off

  1518. with his

  1519. exhortation

  1520. to Archippus,

  1521. he seals

  1522. it,

  1523. with his

  1524. apostolic

  1525. heart by

  1526. saying,

  1527. I,

  1528. Paul,

  1529. write this

  1530. greeting with

  1531. my own

  1532. hand.

  1533. This is

  1534. for me.

  1535. Realize

  1536. who this

  1537. is from.

  1538. Don't forget

  1539. about me.

  1540. Remember

  1541. my chains.

  1542. And he

  1543. says,

  1544. grace be

  1545. with you.

  1546. So

  1547. that's the

  1548. scope of

  1549. the passage.

  1550. I think

  1551. when I

  1552. first,

  1553. like I said

  1554. in the

  1555. beginning,

  1556. when I

  1557. first read

  1558. this,

  1559. I was

  1560. like,

  1561. you know,

  1562. daunted

  1563. by all the

  1564. names a

  1565. little bit.

  1566. But these

  1567. people

  1568. are Paul's

  1569. apostolic

  1570. crew.

  1571. You know,

  1572. and we

  1573. are an

  1574. apostolic

  1575. crew.

  1576. I mean,

  1577. how much

  1578. we're knit

  1579. together will

  1580. prove to be

  1581. how we

  1582. are.

  1583. But we

  1584. have to

  1585. look at

  1586. the scripture

  1587. and say,

  1588. the kinship

  1589. that is

  1590. wrought

  1591. through Jesus,

  1592. what we have

  1593. through the

  1594. body and

  1595. blood of

  1596. Jesus and

  1597. what he

  1598. did on

  1599. the cross

  1600. is more,

  1601. it's not

  1602. less than

  1603. the forgiveness

  1604. of sins,

  1605. but it's

  1606. more than

  1607. that.

  1608. Because the

  1609. forgiveness

  1610. of sins

  1611. through the

  1612. cross is

  1613. not just

  1614. that that

  1615. was purchased.

  1616. It was

  1617. reconciliation

  1618. to the

  1619. father.

  1620. You see

  1621. that?

  1622. That's

  1623. familial.

  1624. Not having

  1625. your sins

  1626. forgiven and

  1627. then being

  1628. reconciled to

  1629. God.

  1630. That is

  1631. a type

  1632. of kin

  1633. relationship.

  1634. You have

  1635. God as

  1636. your father

  1637. through Jesus.

  1638. And we

  1639. share the

  1640. same father.

  1641. And we're

  1642. brothers and

  1643. sisters of

  1644. one another.

  1645. Fathers and

  1646. mothers.

  1647. So to

  1648. abort those

  1649. characteristics is

  1650. to abort the

  1651. omission of

  1652. God and

  1653. Christ Jesus

  1654. for us.

  1655. Yes,

  1656. he's forgiven

  1657. us and

  1658. washed us

  1659. clean of

  1660. our sins.

  1661. Totally

  1662. clean.

  1663. But he has

  1664. also called

  1665. us to be

  1666. kin.

  1667. to relate

  1668. to one

  1669. another as

  1670. family.

  1671. And

  1672. it takes

  1673. work to

  1674. do that.

  1675. It doesn't

  1676. happen in

  1677. one day,

  1678. nor should

  1679. you expect

  1680. it to

  1681. happen in

  1682. one month

  1683. or maybe

  1684. even one

  1685. year.

  1686. But you

  1687. have to

  1688. have the

  1689. purpose

  1690. in mind

  1691. saying God

  1692. wants this

  1693. for us,

  1694. so we're

  1695. going to

  1696. strive for

  1697. that.

  1698. And so

  1699. we see that

  1700. in the

  1701. letter.

  1702. We see

  1703. that in

  1704. Paul's

  1705. heart.

  1706. He

  1707. literally

  1708. says when

  1709. I'm

  1710. sending

  1711. Onesimus,

  1712. who he

  1713. calls his

  1714. son,

  1715. he's

  1716. sending

  1717. my very

  1718. heart.

  1719. What kind

  1720. of person

  1721. talks like

  1722. this?

  1723. You know

  1724. what I

  1725. mean?

  1726. And I

  1727. think we've

  1728. been blessed

  1729. to come

  1730. from a

  1731. very great

  1732. church,

  1733. Bellicose.

  1734. We're sent

  1735. out with

  1736. a lot of

  1737. affection.

  1738. And it

  1739. wouldn't be

  1740. strange to

  1741. me, and

  1742. this is how

  1743. I know

  1744. this, it

  1745. wouldn't be

  1746. strange to

  1747. me for

  1748. someone to

  1749. say, hey,

  1750. we're sending

  1751. so-and-so

  1752. from Bellicose

  1753. and with

  1754. him our

  1755. very heart.

  1756. You know,

  1757. whoever that

  1758. person is,

  1759. they've been

  1760. proved, they've

  1761. been tried, and

  1762. you'll know

  1763. them, and

  1764. you'll have

  1765. affection for

  1766. them, because

  1767. you know where

  1768. you came

  1769. from, and

  1770. the seed of

  1771. family is

  1772. there.

  1773. So, I

  1774. want to

  1775. kind of

  1776. wrap up

  1777. with five

  1778. closing

  1779. points,

  1780. which I

  1781. think are

  1782. applicable to

  1783. Christ's

  1784. church, but

  1785. also are

  1786. found here

  1787. in this

  1788. passage.

  1789. And really

  1790. briefly, five

  1791. ways to

  1792. embrace the

  1793. apostolic

  1794. kinship that

  1795. we see in

  1796. the scriptures.

  1797. Number one,

  1798. and this is

  1799. kind of to be

  1800. on guard

  1801. against,

  1802. number one,

  1803. is to put

  1804. to death

  1805. a duplicitous

  1806. heart.

  1807. You know,

  1808. James 1.8

  1809. says that the

  1810. double-minded

  1811. man is

  1812. unstable in

  1813. all his

  1814. ways.

  1815. Being

  1816. double-minded,

  1817. duplicitous,

  1818. always being

  1819. like, should I

  1820. do this, should

  1821. I do this, is

  1822. this good, is

  1823. this bad, having

  1824. that kind of

  1825. mindset.

  1826. We really

  1827. need to put

  1828. that to

  1829. death.

  1830. Not saying

  1831. that you

  1832. shouldn't,

  1833. you know, if

  1834. you're ignorant,

  1835. strive for

  1836. knowledge and

  1837. ask questions,

  1838. but there is a

  1839. type of love

  1840. of sentimentality,

  1841. can be even

  1842. idolatry, you

  1843. know, where you

  1844. came from,

  1845. idolizing what

  1846. you had, that

  1847. needs to be put

  1848. to death, if

  1849. that exists in

  1850. us, and it

  1851. can creep in.

  1852. you know, Jesus,

  1853. when he often

  1854. talks, although

  1855. some places may

  1856. seem to be, you

  1857. know, hyperbole,

  1858. talks in a very

  1859. matter-of-fact

  1860. way, you know,

  1861. if anyone does

  1862. not hate his

  1863. mother and

  1864. father, you

  1865. know, all the

  1866. excuses of the

  1867. people, Lord, I

  1868. just bought a

  1869. field, you

  1870. know, Lord, my

  1871. father just died,

  1872. let the dead

  1873. bury their own.

  1874. It's like,

  1875. geez.

  1876. But what he's

  1877. getting at is

  1878. basically like, be

  1879. undivided in your

  1880. devotion to God,

  1881. be undivided in

  1882. your aim, and

  1883. do not let the

  1884. love of this

  1885. world or the

  1886. love of comforts,

  1887. either in the

  1888. privacy of your

  1889. own mind or

  1890. your outward

  1891. workings hinder

  1892. you from

  1893. following Christ.

  1894. So point

  1895. number two,

  1896. that's point

  1897. number one.

  1898. Point number

  1899. two, very

  1900. simple one that

  1901. you've heard a

  1902. thousand times,

  1903. but it's

  1904. love one

  1905. another.

  1906. Romans 13, 8

  1907. says, owe

  1908. no one anything

  1909. except to love

  1910. each other, for

  1911. the one who

  1912. loves one

  1913. another fulfills

  1914. the whole law.

  1915. There's that

  1916. word, fulfill,

  1917. you know, filled

  1918. up.

  1919. You obey all

  1920. the commands,

  1921. Jesus says, when

  1922. you have love for

  1923. God and your

  1924. neighbor, right?

  1925. This is the law

  1926. and prophets, he

  1927. says.

  1928. And so we must

  1929. do that to one

  1930. another.

  1931. We must

  1932. honestly strategize

  1933. how to love

  1934. each other

  1935. better.

  1936. And if there

  1937. is something

  1938. that hinders

  1939. us from

  1940. loving each

  1941. other, we

  1942. must repent.

  1943. I was

  1944. convicted earlier

  1945. this week

  1946. about how

  1947. in my own

  1948. heart, I

  1949. really didn't

  1950. have full

  1951. affection for

  1952. this person

  1953. in my life

  1954. and I was

  1955. mulling over

  1956. why that

  1957. was.

  1958. And it

  1959. came to

  1960. me, why?

  1961. And it

  1962. was like

  1963. crystal clear.

  1964. I was, I

  1965. had strains

  1966. of jealousy

  1967. and just a

  1968. projection of

  1969. judgment rather

  1970. than grace for

  1971. this person.

  1972. God

  1973. and the

  1974. Lord convicted

  1975. me and

  1976. said, this

  1977. is why you're

  1978. not loving

  1979. him.

  1980. It's because

  1981. you're letting

  1982. these things

  1983. to thrive.

  1984. Even on a

  1985. small, it

  1986. seemed to be

  1987. small level,

  1988. it ruled the

  1989. ability to

  1990. love him.

  1991. And so I

  1992. repented.

  1993. I said, Lord,

  1994. I need to be

  1995. saved.

  1996. You know, we

  1997. don't love

  1998. perfectly, but

  1999. here it stands.

  2000. Oh, no one

  2001. anything except to

  2002. love each other.

  2003. Romans 13

  2004. says.

  2005. Point number

  2006. three is

  2007. encourage one

  2008. another.

  2009. Like Tychicus,

  2010. it seems to

  2011. be a trend

  2012. that he

  2013. brings the

  2014. word and

  2015. encourages,

  2016. uplifts one

  2017. another.

  2018. Some of us

  2019. are gifted

  2020. with encouragement.

  2021. Some of us

  2022. are gifted with

  2023. encouragement,

  2024. don't use it

  2025. as much.

  2026. Other ones

  2027. just need to

  2028. encourage more.

  2029. But broadly

  2030. speaking, all

  2031. of us need to

  2032. look for ways

  2033. to encourage

  2034. each other.

  2035. So as to

  2036. spur on more

  2037. love for each

  2038. other.

  2039. Point number

  2040. four is

  2041. struggle for

  2042. one another

  2043. and with

  2044. one another.

  2045. Just like

  2046. Paul and

  2047. Epaphras did

  2048. to present

  2049. the saints

  2050. mature in

  2051. Christ, we

  2052. should also

  2053. struggle and

  2054. wrestle to do

  2055. that for one

  2056. another.

  2057. And also

  2058. believe that

  2059. God supplies

  2060. grace and

  2061. strength to do

  2062. it.

  2063. If we do it

  2064. in our own

  2065. strength, then

  2066. we should,

  2067. we might as

  2068. well honestly

  2069. give up.

  2070. And leave

  2071. his church

  2072. altogether.

  2073. God has no

  2074. interest in

  2075. our own

  2076. strength

  2077. contributing

  2078. to the

  2079. work.

  2080. Point number

  2081. five is

  2082. aspire to

  2083. live quietly,

  2084. which is a

  2085. phrase I took

  2086. from 1

  2087. Thessalonians

  2088. 4.

  2089. Paul says

  2090. aspire to

  2091. live quietly

  2092. and to work

  2093. with your

  2094. hands,

  2095. mind your

  2096. own affairs.

  2097. And why

  2098. I bring

  2099. this one

  2100. up, I

  2101. think for

  2102. us, is

  2103. because there's

  2104. really nothing

  2105. attractive about

  2106. the beginnings.

  2107. I shouldn't say

  2108. nothing.

  2109. On the surface,

  2110. there can seem

  2111. to be little

  2112. that's attractive

  2113. at the beginning

  2114. of the church.

  2115. And even the

  2116. monotony of

  2117. the mundane,

  2118. whether it's

  2119. handling kids,

  2120. handling,

  2121. normal life.

  2122. But Paul says

  2123. to live quietly

  2124. and to do it

  2125. unto God.

  2126. And I think

  2127. that many

  2128. people nowadays

  2129. do not

  2130. live quietly.

  2131. We're not

  2132. talking about

  2133. just mere

  2134. silence and

  2135. volume, but

  2136. we're talking

  2137. about a type

  2138. of quietness

  2139. that trusts

  2140. in God and

  2141. says that,

  2142. God, you

  2143. appoint the

  2144. times, you

  2145. appoint the

  2146. seasons,

  2147. everything comes

  2148. under your

  2149. hand, and I

  2150. will trust you

  2151. and be

  2152. faithful to

  2153. do that.

  2154. In Matthew

  2155. 6, when

  2156. Jesus is

  2157. talking about

  2158. prayer, he

  2159. says to go

  2160. into your

  2161. room.

  2162. Oftentimes,

  2163. when we

  2164. pray, it's

  2165. out loud,

  2166. corporate prayer

  2167. is good, but

  2168. it's not only

  2169. that.

  2170. Jesus singles

  2171. out and says,

  2172. when you pray,

  2173. do it in secret,

  2174. do it in

  2175. quiet, live

  2176. quietly.

  2177. I once heard

  2178. a pastor that

  2179. was talking

  2180. with his wife

  2181. and his wife

  2182. was looking at

  2183. him and saying,

  2184. does anyone

  2185. do anything

  2186. in secret

  2187. anymore?

  2188. And he

  2189. kind of

  2190. looked at

  2191. him and

  2192. he's like,

  2193. yeah, sin.

  2194. But if we

  2195. can be a

  2196. people that's

  2197. known by

  2198. proving the

  2199. work that we

  2200. do in the

  2201. shadows and

  2202. in the quiet,

  2203. that's literally

  2204. how Paul

  2205. commends

  2206. Epaphras.

  2207. He says,

  2208. I bear

  2209. him witness

  2210. that he's

  2211. worked hard.

  2212. We have

  2213. no idea

  2214. what kind

  2215. of work

  2216. he did,

  2217. but according

  2218. to Paul,

  2219. he's done

  2220. a lot for

  2221. you guys.

  2222. And he

  2223. struggled in

  2224. his prayers.

  2225. In Psalm

  2226. 33, it

  2227. says,

  2228. behold, the

  2229. eye of the

  2230. Lord is on

  2231. those who

  2232. fear him

  2233. and those

  2234. who hope

  2235. in his

  2236. steadfast love.

  2237. Know,

  2238. Christchurch,

  2239. today, that

  2240. you have the

  2241. Lord's eye

  2242. if you fear

  2243. him and you

  2244. hope in his

  2245. steadfast love.

  2246. And know that

  2247. that is all

  2248. we need,

  2249. is the

  2250. Lord's eye

  2251. and our

  2252. work to

  2253. live quietly,

  2254. but also

  2255. to be an

  2256. apostolic

  2257. kin, to

  2258. strive for

  2259. kinship.

  2260. You know,

  2261. this is far

  2262. more worthy

  2263. than we can

  2264. imagine,

  2265. and I assure

  2266. you that it

  2267. will be proven

  2268. in the day

  2269. when we meet

  2270. the Lamb.

  2271. That's how we

  2272. will know it's

  2273. worthy.

  2274. In the last

  2275. day when we

  2276. dine, that

  2277. Jesus himself

  2278. girds himself

  2279. as a slave

  2280. and serves

  2281. us, we will

  2282. know that

  2283. nothing that

  2284. we did for

  2285. Christ was

  2286. wasted.
