  1. Today, I felt it need to preach on evangelism.

  2. And so the title of this sermon is A Brief Overview of Evangelism, Semicolon, Theology and Missiology.

  3. Theology is just a study of God, and missiology is just a practice within mission.

  4. I think that evangelism is really important in every believer's life, but especially in the life of a new church plant.

  5. One of our values, our mission is the kingdom of God and all of life together.

  6. Evangelism encompasses all three of those things.

  7. We need evangelism to preach God's word for his kingdom.

  8. He allows us to do that within his kingdom.

  9. We do that in all of our life, right?

  10. In different seasons, we must preach God's word.

  11. And we do it together because it's a glorious and joyful thing that we should do together.

  12. So I just want to start with kind of a definition of evangelism,

  13. which evangelism is obeying the command to preach the good news or share the good news of God

  14. to reconcile depraved, sinful men and women to the triune God.

  15. And the goal of this is for us to have a balanced view of evangelism, like a seesaw.

  16. We don't want to be too high on either side.

  17. What we believe about it, how we ought to think about it and applying it to our lives.

  18. So I just want to start with biblical commands and evangelism.

  19. What are biblical commands, right?

  20. What Webster's Dictionary defines it as command as someone giving order or orders to exercise dominating influence over blame.

  21. Right.

  22. So a great image of this is our children.

  23. Within our homes, that is a father and mother's dominion.

  24. We are to dominate over our children, take dominion over them and to rule over our households.

  25. Biblical commands are commands that are given by God.

  26. He is dominating over all creation.

  27. It is his dominion.

  28. And if God commands it, we do it.

  29. It's God who commands it.

  30. So that's a little overview of biblical commands, what they are.

  31. So the Ten Commandments is what we typically go to whenever we hear commands, right?

  32. And, you know, you have a lot of commands.

  33. Do not have any other idols before God.

  34. Honor your mother and father.

  35. Do not lie.

  36. Do not steal.

  37. Do not commit adultery.

  38. And in these commands, I want to focus on language of negative commands versus positive commands.

  39. So negative commands are do not, right?

  40. Do not.

  41. Do not have any gods.

  42. Do not have any other gods before Yahweh.

  43. Do not lie.

  44. Do not steal.

  45. Do not commit adultery.

  46. Positive commands are commands such as obey your mother and father, right?

  47. Physically speaking, positive commands are more difficult sometimes to follow because there's not a line that's drawn in the sand, right?

  48. You're like, physically, I know not to bow down before an idol.

  49. I know not to steal.

  50. I know not to commit adultery.

  51. But in the nuances of obeying your mother and father, that's harder, right?

  52. And here's an example, right, of a famous story of command to forgive, right?

  53. Peter is talking to Jesus.

  54. He says, how often must I forgive my brother who sins against me?

  55. And Jesus responds, you must forgive seven times, 77 times, right?

  56. A positive command, right?

  57. You must do it repeatedly as many times as it takes.

  58. Another example of a positive command or something in this is your kids, right?

  59. You tell your kids, do the dishes.

  60. They're in the other room.

  61. They pretend like they don't hear you.

  62. And then, you know, Max, Max, do the dishes.

  63. Max, playing video games or something, right?

  64. Right?

  65. Not doing it, right?

  66. Or something like that.

  67. Another example is if you're really hungry after church and you turn to your wife and say,

  68. honey, you should pick a place for us to go because I really want you to pick the place.

  69. And 30 minutes later, you're still hungry with no destination in mind.

  70. But there's so much things, right?

  71. So much things that you could do.

  72. It's like, what place should we go to?

  73. I don't know.

  74. Like, how do I obey my mom and dad?

  75. There's no line drawn in the sand, right?

  76. What does this have to do with evangelism, right?

  77. What do positive commands have to do with evangelism?

  78. All right.

  79. I'll start by reading Matthew 28, 16 to 20.

  80. I'm going to be in a ton of different scripture verses.

  81. So I'll just read for you guys.

  82. The 11 disciples traveled to Galilee to the mountain where Jesus had directed them.

  83. When they saw him, they worshiped, but some doubted.

  84. Jesus came near and said to them,

  85. all authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

  86. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,

  87. baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

  88. teaching them to observe everything I've commanded you.

  89. And remember, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  90. So this is a command, right?

  91. It's a positive command.

  92. It's not a negative command.

  93. And so there's so many nuances.

  94. It's just like forgiveness.

  95. You're supposed to do it over and over again, right?

  96. A lot of people would say, like reading this, that go would be the command here.

  97. But unfortunately, that's not the command.

  98. Go is like what's first, but it really should be translated

  99. as a passive or descriptive word, meaning as you have gone or since you have gone or going, right?

  100. Since you have gone, since you are going, make disciples.

  101. The command here is make disciples.

  102. That's the imperative.

  103. It's not a passive.

  104. It's not a descriptive.

  105. It's a command from our Lord to make disciples, right?

  106. And making disciples commanded by our Lord Jesus first begins with repenting,

  107. believing in Jesus as our Lord and Savior,

  108. that he's the only way that we could be saved from our sins.

  109. And that often happens through evangelism.

  110. Now, in Matthew 28, verses 19, one says all nations.

    Matthew 28:19

  111. It's not talking necessarily about countries.

  112. It's talking about ethnicities, right?

  113. People groups.

  114. There are millions of different ethnicities within the world, right?

  115. There's hundreds of thousands of people.

  116. Just go to India, right?

  117. There's about 200 plus countries, and I'm pretty sure most of them have the gospel, right?

  118. Matthew 24, 14 says,

  119. The good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world as a testimony to all nations,

  120. and then the end will come.

  121. If that word is meaning nations, I'm pretty sure there are believers in every nation.

  122. But there is not every ethnicity that has believed and heard the gospels.

  123. Does that make sense?

  124. And so Jesus here, talking about the end times, says this, right?

  125. We must go proclaim the gospel to every ethnicity, right?

  126. But with this command, there can be a bolstering of evangelism, evangelism, evangelism everywhere, right?

  127. Let's just make converts out of everyone while there's no support of the church, right?

  128. I've seen missionaries in different countries who will just make a convert, leave the village, and then keep going without coming back.

  129. That's wrong.

  130. That's a distortion of God's word.

  131. And this is how God expects us to do it, right?

  132. So what is God's role in evangelism, right?

  133. We know that we must do it.

  134. But in that definition, evangelism is obeying the command to preach the good news of God,

  135. to reconcile depraved sinful man to the triune God, right?

  136. So that definition, the good news of God, God has to do with everything with evangelism.

  137. So I have kind of two sections that I want to focus on.

  138. One is the triune God.

  139. And then the second is our duty in evangelism.

  140. Then I'll conclude with some application points, right?

  141. My main focus will be on the triune God.

  142. Then going into duty and then going into duty and then try to end with some application and land this plane nicely.

  143. Right?

  144. The triune God, if you ever think of evangelism, the triune God is the means and the ends of evangelism.

  145. I can say that again for those who are taking notes.

  146. The triune God is the means and the ends of evangelism, right?

  147. And so I'm going to go into each person of the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, right?

  148. Their means and ends of evangelism, right?

  149. There are many things in which I could talk about the Father, the Son, and the Spirit

  150. and how they influence evangelism and all these different things.

  151. But there's only, and I'm not doing an entire overview of all that.

  152. There's only a few things that I want to hone in on.

  153. The first is John 6, 44.

  154. Jesus says,

  155. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.

  156. Right?

  157. So the first thing is the Father's role in that verse.

  158. It says,

  159. The Father who sent me draws him, right?

  160. The Father's role in evangelism is one, drawing people, right?

  161. It's not that the focus, whenever we preach the gospel, there should be no pressure on us

  162. if we're preaching the gospel to a non-religious.

  163. Because we don't draw people by our eloquence.

  164. Paul says to the Corinthians,

  165. I came with you without human eloquence, but by the weakness of the gospel, right?

  166. Our presentation is not what draws people.

  167. You can have the most glorious gospel presentation,

  168. and this man or woman still be damned.

  169. The Father is who draws people, right?

  170. In verse John 6, 65, Jesus says again,

  171. This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted to him by the Father.

  172. Again, nothing that we do say can bring someone to be saved.

  173. It is the work, the mystery, the only thing that changes that and that allows that is the Father, right?

  174. Romans 8, 28 to 30, the golden chain, beloved chain by me.

  175. We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God,

  176. who are called according to his purpose.

  177. For those he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son,

  178. so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

  179. And those he predestined, he also called.

  180. And those he called, he also justified.

  181. And those he justified, he also glorified.

  182. This gives us an even deeper inner working of the election of the Father,

  183. which is so secure because it's already happened.

  184. Does that make sense?

  185. It's so secure in our election because it's already happened.

  186. Paul says we're seeded, past tense, in the heavenly places, right?

  187. God is outside of the boundaries of time.

  188. There's nothing that can change man's election because it's already happened.

  189. And that's why there's no human eloquence that can influence someone being saved.

  190. Because it's already happened.

  191. Because God has already saved him.

  192. But nonetheless, Spurgeon still prays and says,

  193. Lord, save your elect and save even more, right?

  194. Now, that is the means of the Father within evangelism.

  195. He draws those who are his, right?

  196. As the means by it.

  197. The ends of the Father in evangelism is that we are brought into his glorious kingdom to be face to face with the Father.

  198. To ponder the depth and the breath of his glory, his majesty.

  199. To cry out, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty as the cherubim and seraphim do.

  200. To dwell in eternal bliss with our adopted Father.

  201. Our Father who saw us naked.

  202. Our Father who gives us righteousness.

  203. Our Father who predestined us to bring us into his kingdom.

  204. He predestined us to come as the means.

  205. And he brings us in for himself as the ends.

  206. He is the means and the ends of election and of evangelism and of salvation.

  207. Now, the son, John 5, 36.

  208. But I have a greater testimony than John's because of the works that my Father has given me to accomplish.

  209. These very works I'm doing to set, I'm doing to testify about me that the Father has sent me, right?

  210. So there's works that Jesus is doing while he's here on the earth.

  211. But he's sent with a mission from the Father, right?

  212. He's sent from the Father to do a specific mission, right?

  213. What is that though?

  214. What is that specific work, specific task?

  215. John 10, 11.

  216. I am the good shepherd.

  217. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  218. The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd, does not own the sheep, leaves them and runs away when he sees a wolf coming.

  219. Then the wolf snatches and scatters them.

  220. This happens because he is hired, doesn't care about the sheep.

  221. Jesus' mission, his work, sent by the Father, is to be one of the good shepherd, right?

  222. Prophesied.

  223. He is the good shepherd that has come to nurture Israel and to bring Gentiles into the kingdom.

  224. Right?

  225. But not only that, he's the good shepherd that lays down his life for his sheep.

  226. Right?

  227. And we all know the story of Jesus' crucifixion.

  228. But I want to read it really quickly.

  229. In Mark 15, 20 to 32.

  230. They let him out to crucify him.

  231. They forced a man coming in from the country who was passing by to carry Jesus' cross.

  232. He was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

  233. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha, which means place of skull.

  234. They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, which he did not take.

  235. Then they crucified him, divided his clothes, casting lots for him.

  236. They decided what each would get.

  237. Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified him.

  238. The inscription of the charge written against him was the king of the Jews.

  239. They crucified two criminals with him, one on the right and one on the left.

  240. Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads and saying,

  241. Ha!

  242. Ah!

  243. The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days.

  244. Save yourself.

  245. Come down from the cross.

  246. In the same way the chief priests and scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying,

  247. He saves others, but he cannot save himself.

  248. Let the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross so that we may see and believe.

  249. Even those who were crucified with them taunted him.

  250. How awful, how brutal, right?

  251. Like nowadays we wear a cross, but imagine in Roman culture on a hill, right?

  252. Let's just say Briarcliff, right?

  253. We just have people who die there, right?

  254. They torture people and throw them up on Briarcliff.

  255. There's no one who would want to go up there, right?

  256. Let's go smell the stench and people who are dying there, right?

  257. Let's go see the Romans, crucify them.

  258. This is not something that's good.

  259. That you want to talk about in a normal everyday life experience.

  260. It's like talking about the electric chair in like normal conversation.

  261. Like crucifixion then was awful.

  262. It was brutal.

  263. 39 times was our Savior whipped.

  264. That usually tears skin.

  265. It usually tears muscles.

  266. Carried our cross.

  267. The Father predestined that he would come.

  268. He predestined that we would be saved by this man.

  269. By the Son of God.

  270. Our Good Shepherd laid his life down for us

  271. because the Father sent him to provide a means by which we could save.

  272. Be saved.

  273. The Father predestines us as the means.

  274. And the Son lays his life down and is raised three days later

  275. as a means that we might be saved.

  276. The Son is the end of evangelism as the Father is.

  277. Revelation 5, 11 and 14.

  278. 11 to 14.

  279. I'm just going to read.

  280. Verse 12.

  281. They said with a loud voice,

  282. Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered

  283. to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and blessing.

  284. Right?

  285. We will worship the Lamb as we worship the Father.

  286. The ends of evangelism with the Son is to worship him.

  287. It's to say,

  288. Praise be our older brother, the firstborn of all creation,

  289. who was raised from the dead.

  290. Praise be that Lamb.

  291. Do you not long to dwell with the Son?

  292. For him to come?

  293. He ascended the cross that the blind would see,

  294. that we would see,

  295. that the deaf would hear,

  296. that the prisoner in bondage and sin would be set free.

  297. The one who says,

  298. I am with you,

  299. to the end of the age,

  300. our Savior and champion,

  301. who can sympathize and empathize with our pain,

  302. died because he loved us.

  303. Right?

  304. He died as a means so that we could be saved.

  305. And he's the end of our evangelism,

  306. of why we're here.

  307. Right?

  308. Like, we're not waiting.

  309. Like, if our hope is just,

  310. like, let's just sit around and wait for something to happen,

  311. I'll keep going to church,

  312. do my religious duties,

  313. then what's the point of it all?

  314. We have a hope that's reserved for us in heaven.

  315. The Father longing to glorify him,

  316. the Son longing to glorify and worship him.

  317. And that brings us to the third person of the Trinity,

  318. the Spirit.

  319. John 16, 7-11,

  320. Nevertheless,

  321. I'm telling you the truth,

  322. for it is for your benefit that I go away.

  323. Because if I don't go away,

  324. the Counselor will not come.

  325. If I go,

  326. I will send him to you.

  327. When he comes,

  328. he will convict the world about sin,

  329. righteousness,

  330. and judgment.

  331. About sin,

  332. because they do not believe in me.

  333. About righteousness,

  334. because I'm going to the Father,

  335. you will no longer see me.

  336. And about judgment,

  337. because the ruler of this world,

  338. has been judged.

  339. The Father has sent the Son,

  340. and now the Son,

  341. as he ascends,

  342. sends the Spirit.

  343. And says,

  344. it is better.

  345. It is for your benefit

  346. that I go away.

  347. Right?

  348. I long to dwell with Jesus,

  349. but Jesus,

  350. God himself,

  351. says that it is better.

  352. It is a benefit to you.

  353. That I should go away,

  354. and I should send the Spirit.

  355. Now,

  356. those who believe in Jesus' work

  357. on the cross,

  358. who have repented and believed,

  359. are saved for the day,

  360. are sealed and saved

  361. for the day of judgment

  362. by the Spirit.

  363. And about sin,

  364. that we are lost sinners,

  365. and cannot be in a relationship

  366. with God.

  367. About righteousness,

  368. that we have none,

  369. but need Jesus.

  370. And about judgment,

  371. that Christ has defeated sin,

  372. and death,

  373. and was raised from the dead.

  374. That is the Spirit's work.

  375. Right?

  376. The biggest one

  377. is to seal us,

  378. to sanctify us,

  379. to keep us

  380. for the day of reckoning.

  381. Right?

  382. And not only that,

  383. but he convicts the world

  384. of sin,

  385. of righteousness,

  386. and of judgment.

  387. Right?

  388. The Spirit of God,

  389. triune God,

  390. the most powerful being

  391. in the universe,

  392. Paul writes in Ephesians,

  393. God is more powerful

  394. beyond what we can think.

  395. Right?

  396. Like,

  397. think about a hundred million

  398. burning suns.

  399. God is more powerful

  400. than that.

  401. Right?

  402. Beyond what we can think,

  403. it's given to us

  404. as a gift.

  405. And he dwells

  406. within us.

  407. 2 Timothy 1,

  408. 7,

  409. tells us God has given us,

  410. not a,

  411. not a,

  412. has given us,

  413. not a spirit of fear,

  414. but of one of power

  415. and love

  416. and sound judgment.

  417. We have access

  418. to God's

  419. power.

  420. If we are in Christ,

  421. the,

  422. the Spirit is already

  423. convicting the world.

  424. But how will they hear?

  425. You know,

  426. Spirit's convicting the world,

  427. but how will they hear

  428. if a preacher

  429. is not sent?

  430. How will they see

  431. if evangelism

  432. is not happening?

  433. The Spirit

  434. gives us

  435. the power

  436. to preach,

  437. to share the gospel.

  438. Right?

  439. The Father

  440. has sent the Son

  441. to die

  442. and be raised again

  443. for sinful men.

  444. Those who

  445. believe in the Son's

  446. sacrifice

  447. become sons themselves.

  448. Daughters

  449. are given

  450. the inheritance

  451. of sons.

  452. And he,

  453. he's called

  454. the helper,

  455. the comforter.

  456. We live in evil days

  457. so that we would not

  458. lose heart.

  459. Our foe is powerful.

  460. Right?

  461. Satan is powerful.

  462. He,

  463. he's an angel.

  464. Magnificent being

  465. created

  466. by the Lord

  467. and evil,

  468. depraved,

  469. sinful,

  470. tactful

  471. enemy

  472. who loves

  473. to dwell

  474. and cause

  475. men to sin.

  476. that's why

  477. the helper

  478. was sent

  479. so that we

  480. would fight

  481. against them.

  482. The Spirit

  483. is the means

  484. of evangelism

  485. as the Son

  486. and the Father

  487. is,

  488. that men

  489. and women

  490. would dwell

  491. in the holy

  492. dwellings

  493. of the Spirit

  494. of God

  495. is something

  496. awesome to behold.

  497. The Spirit

  498. hovering over

  499. the chaotic

  500. waters

  501. at creation

  502. that helped

  503. bring order

  504. then,

  505. now,

  506. bring orders

  507. to our lives

  508. and even

  509. greater order

  510. whenever we

  511. are in heaven

  512. with God

  513. sealing us

  514. for that day

  515. of reckoning.

  516. Great

  517. are the

  518. works of the Spirit

  519. and wondrous

  520. are the works

  521. that we would

  522. be brought

  523. in

  524. the glory

  525. with the triune

  526. God for the work

  527. of the Spirit.

  528. So,

  529. that's the Father,

  530. that's the Son,

  531. and that's the Spirit.

  532. The triune God

  533. is the means

  534. and the ends

  535. of evangelism.

  536. We cannot

  537. have

  538. redemption

  539. without the

  540. Father,

  541. Son,

  542. and the Holy Spirit.

  543. They have

  544. different roles,

  545. they are all

  546. saints,

  547. that's into God.

  548. And now,

  549. at the end

  550. of all this,

  551. there's one question

  552. that I want to

  553. focus on a little bit,

  554. right?

  555. Why is God

  556. the ends

  557. of evangelism?

  558. Right?

  559. Why is God

  560. the ends

  561. of evangelism?

  562. He provided

  563. the means.

  564. Why is He

  565. the ends?

  566. Why aren't

  567. the ends

  568. just meant

  569. to be saved?

  570. Isn't that enough?

  571. Doesn't it

  572. make God

  573. seem a bit

  574. needy?

  575. If the ends

  576. of evangelism

  577. is just

  578. that we have

  579. to worship

  580. Him in heaven?

  581. Short answer

  582. is,

  583. because it

  584. wouldn't

  585. complete salvation.

  586. salvation

  587. because we're

  588. created

  589. as beings

  590. that are meant

  591. to praise,

  592. to worship,

  593. to glorify.

  594. Salvation

  595. would be

  596. incomplete

  597. if we didn't

  598. have an object

  599. to worship.

  600. And I think

  601. C.S. Lewis

  602. says it best.

  603. I think we,

  604. C.S. Lewis

  605. talking,

  606. I think we delight

  607. in praising

  608. what we enjoy

  609. because the praise

  610. not merely

  611. expresses

  612. but completes

  613. the enjoyment.

  614. It is

  615. its appointed

  616. consummation.

  617. It is not

  618. out of

  619. compliment

  620. that lovers

  621. keep telling

  622. one another

  623. how beautiful

  624. they are.

  625. The delight

  626. is incomplete

  627. till it is

  628. expressed.

  629. It is frustrating

  630. to have discovered

  631. a new

  632. author

  633. and not be

  634. able to tell

  635. anyone

  636. how good he is

  637. to come suddenly

  638. at the turn

  639. of the road

  640. upon some

  641. mountain valley

  642. of unexpected

  643. grandeur

  644. and then

  645. have to

  646. keep silent

  647. because the

  648. people you

  649. care for

  650. care no more

  651. for a tin can

  652. in the ditch.

  653. To hear a good

  654. joke and find

  655. no one to

  656. share it with

  657. the Scotch

  658. catechism

  659. says that

  660. man's chief

  661. end is to

  662. glorify God

  663. and enjoy him

  664. forever.

  665. But we shall

  666. know,

  667. but we shall

  668. then know

  669. that these

  670. are the same

  671. thing.

  672. Fully to enjoy

  673. is to glorify.

  674. In commanding

  675. us to glorify

  676. him,

  677. God is inviting

  678. us to

  679. enjoy him.

  680. Right?

  681. The reason

  682. why God

  683. is the

  684. end is

  685. because we

  686. are meant

  687. to enjoy.

  688. We are

  689. meant to

  690. glorify him.

  691. At the

  692. beginning of

  693. creation,

  694. we were

  695. created to

  696. worship,

  697. glorify God.

  698. Right?

  699. That is God's

  700. original intent

  701. and purpose

  702. for us,

  703. and that has

  704. not changed.

  705. So,

  706. that's the

  707. first part.

  708. We're going

  709. to the second

  710. half,

  711. which is the

  712. joyful duty

  713. of evangelism.

  714. I love

  715. evangelism.

  716. Many have

  717. said that I

  718. have the

  719. gift of

  720. evangelism,

  721. but evangelism

  722. is a command.

  723. Praise God

  724. for the

  725. Spirit.

  726. Right?

  727. Faith is a

  728. gift, but

  729. faith is

  730. something that

  731. we need.

  732. Right?

  733. We need

  734. faith.

  735. We need to

  736. believe it.

  737. Right?

  738. But we

  739. are commanded

  740. to believe

  741. in God,

  742. and we

  743. are commanded

  744. to evangelize.

  745. Right?

  746. From the

  747. intro, I've

  748. established that

  749. evangelism is a

  750. command, and

  751. something that

  752. we must do,

  753. like the

  754. worship service

  755. of the

  756. Levites,

  757. they're commanded

  758. by God to

  759. do things

  760. within the

  761. service,

  762. within the

  763. temple,

  764. and if they

  765. don't do

  766. those certain

  767. things,

  768. then they're

  769. breaking the

  770. law,

  771. breaking God's

  772. commands.

  773. And so

  774. one thing

  775. that I

  776. want to

  777. hit on

  778. with positive

  779. commands,

  780. and especially

  781. the command

  782. to evangelize,

  783. is the

  784. sin of

  785. commission,

  786. and the

  787. sin of

  788. omission.

  789. Right?

  790. The sin

  791. of commission

  792. is really

  793. easy to

  794. see.

  795. Right?

  796. It is,

  797. examples of

  798. this is

  799. lying.

  800. Right?

  801. It's actively

  802. doing it.

  803. Lying is

  804. a sin of

  805. commission.

  806. Stealing.

  807. Committing

  808. adultery.

  809. Right?

  810. You can see

  811. it.

  812. It's tangible.

  813. Sin of

  814. omission can

  815. be a little

  816. trickier to

  817. detect.

  818. Right?

  819. Because it's

  820. admitting

  821. something.

  822. Matthew 25,

    Matthew 25:40–46

  823. verse 40

  824. to 46,

  825. says,

  826. Jesus talking,

  827. And the

  828. king will

  829. answer them,

  830. Truly I

  831. tell you,

  832. whatever you

  833. did for one

  834. of the least

  835. of these

  836. brothers and

  837. sisters of

  838. mine,

  839. you did

  840. for me.

  841. Then he

  842. will also

  843. say to

  844. those on

  845. the left,

  846. Depart

  847. from me,

  848. who are

  849. cursed into

  850. the eternal

  851. fire,

  852. prepared for

  853. the devil

  854. and his

  855. angels.

  856. I was

  857. hungry,

  858. and you

  859. gave me

  860. nothing to

  861. eat.

  862. I was

  863. thirsty,

  864. and you

  865. gave me

  866. nothing to

  867. drink.

  868. I was a

  869. stranger,

  870. and you

  871. didn't take

  872. me in.

  873. I was

  874. naked,

  875. and you

  876. didn't

  877. clothe me

  878. sick,

  879. and in

  880. prison,

  881. and you

  882. didn't care

  883. for me.

  884. Then they

  885. too will

  886. answer,

  887. Lord,

  888. we did

  889. not see

  890. you,

  891. hungry,

  892. thirsty,

  893. or a

  894. stranger,

  895. without

  896. clothes,

  897. or sick,

  898. or in

  899. prison,

  900. and not

  901. help you.

  902. Then he

  903. will answer,

  904. Truly,

  905. I tell you,

  906. whatever you

  907. did not

  908. do for the

  909. least of

  910. these,

  911. did not

  912. do for

  913. me.

  914. Then they

  915. will go

  916. away into

  917. eternal

  918. punishment,

  919. but the

  920. righteous

  921. into

  922. eternal

  923. life.

  924. There's a

  925. great example

  926. of the

  927. sin of

  928. omission,

  929. right?

  930. Not

  931. seeing,

  932. not doing,

  933. right?

  934. Like Jesus,

  935. we never

  936. saw you

  937. out there

  938. begging,

  939. right?

  940. I mean,

  941. we saw a

  942. beggar,

  943. but we

  944. didn't see

  945. you.

  946. We chose

  947. to ignore

  948. him.

  949. Another

  950. example of

  951. the sin

  952. of omission

  953. is the

  954. parable of

  955. the Good

  956. Samaritan,

  957. right?

  958. There's a

  959. man who's

  960. beaten,

  961. right?

  962. Laying

  963. there,

  964. not like

  965. so weak,

  966. can't do

  967. anything.

  968. A

  969. Levitical

  970. priest goes

  971. by,

  972. right?

  973. walks away,

  974. and then

  975. a Good

  976. Samaritan

  977. comes,

  978. right?

  979. Takes

  980. care of

  981. this man,

  982. bandages

  983. his wound,

  984. takes him

  985. to an

  986. inn,

  987. and have

  988. the innkeeper

  989. look after

  990. him.

  991. That

  992. Levitical

  993. priest is

  994. showing a

  995. sin of

  996. omission,

  997. not loving

  998. his neighbor,

  999. not taking

  1000. care of

  1001. him as he

  1002. shouldn't.

  1003. And then

  1004. another

  1005. example of

  1006. this is

  1007. not

  1008. forgiving

  1009. when we

  1010. should.

  1011. Right?

  1012. Talked about

  1013. earlier,

  1014. Jesus and

  1015. Peter,

  1016. like we're

  1017. commanded to

  1018. forgive,

  1019. but sometimes

  1020. we withhold

  1021. them,

  1022. right?

  1023. It's within

  1024. our hearts,

  1025. can't really

  1026. see it,

  1027. but we're

  1028. not doing

  1029. it,

  1030. we're

  1031. admitting

  1032. it,

  1033. and it's

  1034. a sin.

  1035. And yet

  1036. another

  1037. example of

  1038. this is

  1039. not

  1040. evangelizing,

  1041. sin of

  1042. omission,

  1043. because

  1044. evangelism

  1045. is a

  1046. command,

  1047. something that

  1048. we must

  1049. do,

  1050. and not

  1051. doing it

  1052. is sinning,

  1053. it's a

  1054. sin of

  1055. omission.

  1056. Now some

  1057. might think,

  1058. hey Zemir,

  1059. sounds like

  1060. you're bordering

  1061. legalism here,

  1062. talking about

  1063. Levitical

  1064. priests and

  1065. everything.

  1066. Well let's

  1067. go there.

  1068. What is

  1069. legalism,

  1070. right?

  1071. I put,

  1072. it's a

  1073. practice of

  1074. working within

  1075. a set moral

  1076. code of

  1077. commands in

  1078. order to

  1079. do good

  1080. for yourself

  1081. to get to

  1082. God,

  1083. right?

  1084. In other

  1085. words,

  1086. legalism is

  1087. focused on

  1088. the self.

  1089. The object

  1090. of one's

  1091. worship is

  1092. directed towards

  1093. how well

  1094. or how much

  1095. he can

  1096. obey a

  1097. set of

  1098. commands,

  1099. right?

  1100. It's set

  1101. on him.

  1102. He's the

  1103. object of

  1104. his worship

  1105. so that

  1106. he can

  1107. get somewhere,

  1108. right?

  1109. I totally

  1110. disagree with

  1111. legalism.

  1112. Don't

  1113. practice

  1114. legalism.

  1115. The object

  1116. of our

  1117. affection within

  1118. evangelism

  1119. must be

  1120. God.

  1121. God.

  1122. Whether we

  1123. are evangelizing

  1124. someone or

  1125. offering

  1126. forgiveness as

  1127. we're commanded,

  1128. like, we

  1129. don't forgive

  1130. someone so

  1131. that they

  1132. would see how

  1133. well we

  1134. are, right?

  1135. If we're

  1136. forgiving someone

  1137. so that they

  1138. can see how

  1139. good we are,

  1140. it's not true

  1141. forgiveness,

  1142. right?

  1143. If we're

  1144. fasting so

  1145. that other

  1146. people would

  1147. see, like,

  1148. our piety,

  1149. like, Jesus

  1150. says, your

  1151. reward has

  1152. already been

  1153. given to you

  1154. by men.

  1155. Our

  1156. evangelism must

  1157. be God-centered

  1158. and God-focused,

  1159. right?

  1160. Now, what I

  1161. do want to

  1162. note in

  1163. legalism and

  1164. evangelism and

  1165. the command to

  1166. evangelize is

  1167. that it doesn't

  1168. have a limit,

  1169. right?

  1170. It's not

  1171. evangelize 10

  1172. times and

  1173. you're good,

  1174. right?

  1175. Or forgive

  1176. 77 people and

  1177. you don't have

  1178. to do it again.

  1179. it's

  1180. lifelong.

  1181. It's

  1182. lifelong God-centered

  1183. obedience,

  1184. just like

  1185. there isn't

  1186. an amount

  1187. to how many

  1188. people you

  1189. should forgive.

  1190. Right?

  1191. So,

  1192. some conclusions.

  1193. So,

  1194. landing the

  1195. plane,

  1196. coming to

  1197. an end,

  1198. is,

  1199. if you guys

  1200. want to turn

  1201. with me to

  1202. Ephesians 6,

    Ephesians 6:10–19

  1203. verse 10 to

  1204. 19.

  1205. Paul writes,

  1206. finally,

  1207. be strengthened

  1208. by the Lord

  1209. and by his

  1210. vast strength.

  1211. Put on the

  1212. full armor of

  1213. God so that

  1214. you can stand

  1215. against the

  1216. schemes of

  1217. Satan.

  1218. For our

  1219. struggle is

  1220. not against

  1221. flesh and

  1222. blood,

  1223. but against

  1224. the rulers,

  1225. against the

  1226. authorities,

  1227. against the

  1228. cosmic powers

  1229. of this

  1230. darkness,

  1231. against evil

  1232. spiritual forces

  1233. in the

  1234. heaven.

  1235. For this

  1236. reason,

  1237. take up

  1238. the full

  1239. armor of

  1240. God so

  1241. that you

  1242. may be

  1243. able to

  1244. resist in

  1245. the evil

  1246. day.

  1247. And having

  1248. prepared

  1249. everything,

  1250. take your

  1251. stand.

  1252. Stand,

  1253. therefore,

  1254. with truth

  1255. like a

  1256. belt around

  1257. your waist,

  1258. righteousness

  1259. like armor

  1260. on your

  1261. chest,

  1262. and feet

  1263. sandaled

  1264. with the

  1265. readiness

  1266. for the

  1267. gospel of

  1268. peace.

  1269. In every

  1270. situation,

  1271. take up

  1272. the shield

  1273. of faith

  1274. with which

  1275. you can

  1276. extinguish

  1277. all the

  1278. flaming arrows

  1279. of the

  1280. evil one.

  1281. Take the

  1282. helmet of

  1283. salvation

  1284. and the

  1285. sword of

  1286. the spirit,

  1287. which is

  1288. the word

  1289. of God.

  1290. Pray at

  1291. all times

  1292. in the

  1293. spirit with

  1294. every prayer

  1295. and request.

  1296. Stay alert

  1297. with perseverance

  1298. and intercessions

  1299. for all the

  1300. saints.

  1301. Pray also

  1302. for me,

  1303. that the

  1304. message may

  1305. be given

  1306. to me when

  1307. I open

  1308. my mouth

  1309. to make

  1310. known the

  1311. boldness,

  1312. the mystery,

  1313. boldness,

  1314. with boldness,

  1315. the mystery of

  1316. the gospel.

  1317. For this,

  1318. I'm an

  1319. ambassador

  1320. in chains.

  1321. Pray that

  1322. I might

  1323. also.

  1324. Pray that

  1325. I might

  1326. be bold

  1327. enough to

  1328. speak about

  1329. it.

  1330. I

  1331. shouldn't.

  1332. Right?

  1333. So,

  1334. I have

  1335. seven

  1336. application

  1337. points.

  1338. The first

  1339. is pray.

  1340. Prayer is

  1341. the first

  1342. thing.

  1343. Paul says

  1344. it three

  1345. times.

  1346. Pray at

  1347. all times.

  1348. Then in

  1349. verse 18,

  1350. then 19,

  1351. pray also

  1352. for me.

  1353. Then in

  1354. 20,

  1355. pray that

  1356. I might

  1357. be bold.

  1358. Three

  1359. times in

  1360. the same

  1361. section.

  1362. If we're

  1363. not praying

  1364. towards being

  1365. bold,

  1366. toward saying,

  1367. God,

  1368. I am so

  1369. weak.

  1370. I need

  1371. your help

  1372. to go out

  1373. and preach

  1374. the gospel.

  1375. A man

  1376. like Paul

  1377. who's asking

  1378. the Ephesians

  1379. for prayer,

  1380. then we'll

  1381. always be

  1382. weak.

  1383. Right?

  1384. The beginning

  1385. of that is

  1386. we're against

  1387. our struggle

  1388. is not

  1389. against

  1390. flesh and

  1391. blood.

  1392. It's

  1393. against

  1394. the

  1395. cosmic

  1396. rulers.

  1397. Right?

  1398. Satan

  1399. wants to

  1400. suppress

  1401. that desire,

  1402. that urge

  1403. to go and

  1404. preach the

  1405. gospel.

  1406. If we're not

  1407. actively fighting

  1408. against that,

  1409. we won't do

  1410. it.

  1411. Truly,

  1412. prayer is

  1413. our greatest

  1414. weapon and

  1415. defense by

  1416. saying,

  1417. Satan,

  1418. I rebuke

  1419. you in the

  1420. name of

  1421. Jesus.

  1422. And then

  1423. the second

  1424. one is

  1425. go evangelist.

  1426. Do it.

  1427. Right?

  1428. It doesn't

  1429. matter.

  1430. It doesn't

  1431. matter like

  1432. where you

  1433. go,

  1434. what specific

  1435. thing you're

  1436. doing,

  1437. do it.

  1438. I love

  1439. going door

  1440. to door

  1441. and evangelize.

  1442. I love

  1443. taking people

  1444. with me

  1445. because they're

  1446. so squirmy.

  1447. But it

  1448. takes away

  1449. so much

  1450. fear.

  1451. Right?

  1452. People who

  1453. are like

  1454. have so much

  1455. pent up

  1456. fear within

  1457. them because

  1458. like Satan

  1459. is coming

  1460. against them

  1461. saying,

  1462. why are you

  1463. doing this?

  1464. Puts them

  1465. out of their

  1466. comfort zone.

  1467. They don't

  1468. want to do

  1469. it.

  1470. It's so

  1471. squirmy.

  1472. Right?

  1473. If you're

  1474. not equipped

  1475. with prayer,

  1476. right,

  1477. you will not

  1478. do it.

  1479. You truly

  1480. will not.

  1481. Whether you

  1482. have the gift

  1483. of evangelism

  1484. or not.

  1485. Right?

  1486. We must

  1487. depend and

  1488. rely solely

  1489. on the power

  1490. of God

  1491. to preach

  1492. the gospel

  1493. because we're

  1494. not against

  1495. flesh and

  1496. blood.

  1497. When we are

  1498. preaching the

  1499. gospel,

  1500. when we are

  1501. evangelizing to

  1502. that person,

  1503. we're also

  1504. like preaching

  1505. against all

  1506. the demons

  1507. that are

  1508. whispering lies

  1509. to them

  1510. saying,

  1511. why do you

  1512. want to

  1513. believe this?

  1514. Like you

  1515. are doing

  1516. good yourself.

  1517. Like you're

  1518. trying to

  1519. get them to

  1520. believe and

  1521. you yourself

  1522. must gird

  1523. your loins

  1524. prayer.

  1525. One of the

  1526. biggest stoppers

  1527. for people

  1528. going and

  1529. evangelizing

  1530. is fear,

  1531. guys.

  1532. It's what

  1533. people,

  1534. whether they

  1535. can think

  1536. about me,

  1537. like I

  1538. don't want

  1539. to do it.

  1540. Like it's

  1541. fear.

  1542. People are

  1543. pent up with

  1544. fear.

  1545. They don't

  1546. want to do

  1547. it.

  1548. And so you

  1549. need to pray.

  1550. That fear

  1551. is not

  1552. from yourself.

  1553. That fear

  1554. really is

  1555. from cosmic

  1556. powers.

  1557. That's

  1558. ungodly

  1559. fear.

  1560. Right?

  1561. As I've

  1562. said earlier,

  1563. the spirit,

  1564. the most

  1565. powerful being

  1566. in the

  1567. universe is

  1568. given to

  1569. us.

  1570. Right?

  1571. And it's

  1572. given to

  1573. us with

  1574. power,

  1575. not a

  1576. fear.

  1577. Right?

  1578. If we're

  1579. fearful of

  1580. doing something

  1581. spiritual,

  1582. it means that

  1583. that is not

  1584. from God,

  1585. not even

  1586. from us.

  1587. either from

  1588. our flesh

  1589. or from

  1590. Satan.

  1591. Right?

  1592. Pray against

  1593. that.

  1594. A word

  1595. for men,

  1596. single and

  1597. married.

  1598. Right?

  1599. How is

  1600. your evangelism?

  1601. Right?

  1602. How is

  1603. your evangelism?

  1604. How are

  1605. you leading

  1606. your family

  1607. in evangelizing?

  1608. How are

  1609. your practices

  1610. now to

  1611. teach your

  1612. sons and

  1613. daughter that

  1614. evangelism is

  1615. important?

  1616. Single men

  1617. who have

  1618. more time

  1619. on their

  1620. hand than

  1621. married men?

  1622. What does

  1623. your time

  1624. look like?

  1625. Right?

  1626. Is this a

  1627. priority for

  1628. you?

  1629. Truly.

  1630. Word of

  1631. God,

  1632. our life is

  1633. but a

  1634. breath,

  1635. but a

  1636. vapor.

  1637. Like,

  1638. what are

  1639. you doing?

  1640. That's not

  1641. to condemn,

  1642. that's truly

  1643. for you to

  1644. reevaluate.

  1645. Like,

  1646. what is

  1647. most important

  1648. to you?

  1649. a word for

  1650. women,

  1651. single and

  1652. married.

  1653. I know

  1654. that women

  1655. mainly take

  1656. care of

  1657. kids,

  1658. right?

  1659. And my

  1660. wife does

  1661. as well.

  1662. But let

  1663. that not be

  1664. an excuse.

  1665. Take

  1666. opportunities

  1667. to go and

  1668. preach the

  1669. gospel.

  1670. Like,

  1671. everyone here

  1672. goes to the

  1673. grocery store.

  1674. I love

  1675. talking to

  1676. clerks or

  1677. just random

  1678. people who

  1679. are grabbing

  1680. the same

  1681. can as

  1682. me.

  1683. Oh,

  1684. you get

  1685. that also?

  1686. Then strike

  1687. up a

  1688. conversation.

  1689. You can.

  1690. You,

  1691. women,

  1692. you do not

  1693. have to go

  1694. door to

  1695. door and

  1696. preach the

  1697. gospel.

  1698. That's not

  1699. for everyone.

  1700. But you

  1701. can,

  1702. in your

  1703. day-to-day

  1704. routine,

  1705. be intentionally

  1706. trying to

  1707. preach the

  1708. gospel,

  1709. going to

  1710. the same

  1711. store,

  1712. trying to

  1713. preach to

  1714. the same

  1715. grocery

  1716. store

  1717. clerk,

  1718. trying to

  1719. bring someone

  1720. from your

  1721. ballet class

  1722. to hang out

  1723. with them,

  1724. or your

  1725. soccer team,

  1726. trying to

  1727. get to

  1728. know those

  1729. parents and

  1730. family.

  1731. At

  1732. Bellico's,

  1733. there was

  1734. a family

  1735. who was

  1736. saved because

  1737. of soccer

  1738. practice.

  1739. Right?

  1740. Women,

  1741. you can do

  1742. this.

  1743. Single

  1744. women,

  1745. especially,

  1746. more time

  1747. on your

  1748. hands.

  1749. Again,

  1750. don't be

  1751. foolish,

  1752. don't go

  1753. door-to-door

  1754. knocking,

  1755. maybe do

  1756. if the

  1757. Lord's

  1758. leading you

  1759. that way,

  1760. but you

  1761. have more

  1762. time on

  1763. your hands.

  1764. Word for

  1765. kids,

  1766. you kids

  1767. who are

  1768. saved,

  1769. who believe

  1770. that Christ

  1771. is the

  1772. only way,

  1773. preach the

  1774. gospel to

  1775. your friends

  1776. who are

  1777. not saved.

  1778. Let them

  1779. repent and

  1780. believe,

  1781. to your

  1782. siblings as

  1783. well,

  1784. because it's

  1785. life and

  1786. death.

  1787. Though your

  1788. kids,

  1789. our life is

  1790. but a

  1791. vapor,

  1792. right?

  1793. We're

  1794. here for

  1795. a second.

  1796. Do you

  1797. guys remember

  1798. when you

  1799. were three

  1800. years old?

  1801. Now you're

  1802. like 10?

  1803. Like,

  1804. life goes

  1805. by super

  1806. fast.

  1807. Preach the

  1808. gospel to

  1809. your friends.

  1810. Second thing,

  1811. put it on

  1812. your calendar.

  1813. If you do

  1814. not plan a

  1815. time to

  1816. go and

  1817. actually go

  1818. out and

  1819. evangelize,

  1820. you will

  1821. never do

  1822. it.

  1823. I say

  1824. that from

  1825. experience

  1826. because if

  1827. there is

  1828. fear,

  1829. that fear

  1830. will suppress

  1831. what you're

  1832. doing,

  1833. right?

  1834. What you

  1835. want to

  1836. do.

  1837. Do it

  1838. with someone.

  1839. Put it

  1840. on your

  1841. calendar.

  1842. Put it

  1843. on your

  1844. calendars

  1845. together.

  1846. Don't

  1847. just say,

  1848. I really

  1849. want to

  1850. evangelize.

  1851. Be a

  1852. man of

  1853. your

  1854. word,

  1855. a woman

  1856. of your

  1857. word,

  1858. and go

  1859. out.

  1860. Set it

  1861. on your

  1862. calendar.

  1863. If you

  1864. don't do

  1865. that,

  1866. it won't

  1867. happen,

  1868. right?

  1869. It'll be

  1870. spontaneous,

  1871. and if you're

  1872. not already

  1873. spontaneous preaching

  1874. the gospel,

  1875. you're not

  1876. praying for

  1877. that,

  1878. actively

  1879. seeking

  1880. that,

  1881. then it'll

  1882. be hard

  1883. if it's

  1884. not on

  1885. your

  1886. calendar.

  1887. It's

  1888. my

  1889. encouraging,

  1890. put it

  1891. on your

  1892. calendars.

  1893. And then

  1894. number

  1895. seven is

  1896. have your

  1897. feet ready

  1898. to preach

  1899. the gospel,

  1900. gospel of

  1901. peace.

  1902. Always be

  1903. aware of

  1904. who you can

  1905. preach the

  1906. gospel to,

  1907. especially

  1908. around Christmas

  1909. season,

  1910. around family

  1911. members who

  1912. are caught

  1913. in sins,

  1914. who don't

  1915. believe the

  1916. gospel,

  1917. amongst,

  1918. like,

  1919. it's time

  1920. where you

  1921. don't talk

  1922. to family

  1923. members that

  1924. you can't

  1925. talk to,

  1926. because it's

  1927. not weird to

  1928. call them

  1929. out of the

  1930. blue,

  1931. right?

  1932. Merry Christmas,

  1933. how are you

  1934. doing?

  1935. How's your

  1936. life going?

  1937. Can I pray

  1938. for you?

  1939. It's not

  1940. weird.

  1941. And so,

  1942. I want to

  1943. end really

  1944. quickly by

  1945. I think a

  1946. song that

  1947. sums up

  1948. evangelism,

  1949. gospel,

  1950. and

  1951. praising God

  1952. at the

  1953. end of

  1954. our days.

  1955. Well,

  1956. this is

  1957. Amazing Grace.

  1958. Amazing Grace,

  1959. how sweet the

  1960. sound,

  1961. has saved a

  1962. wretch like

  1963. me.

  1964. I once was

  1965. lost,

  1966. but now I'm

  1967. found,

  1968. was blind,

  1969. but now I

  1970. see.

  1971. So it's

  1972. grace that

  1973. taught my

  1974. heart to

  1975. fear,

  1976. and grace

  1977. my fears

  1978. relieved.

  1979. How precious

  1980. did that grace

  1981. appear,

  1982. the hour I

  1983. first believed.

  1984. The Lord

  1985. has promised

  1986. good to

  1987. me.

  1988. His words

  1989. my hope

  1990. secures.

  1991. He will

  1992. my shield

  1993. and portion

  1994. be as long

  1995. as life

  1996. endures.

  1997. When we've

  1998. been there

  1999. 10,000 years

  2000. bright,

  2001. shining as

  2002. the sun,

  2003. we've no

  2004. less to sing

  2005. God's praise

  2006. than the

  2007. day we

  2008. first begun.

  2009. Amen.

  2010. Lord,

  2011. I thank you

  2012. for this

  2013. day,

  2014. O Lord.

  2015. I pray for

  2016. this church

  2017. plant.

  2018. I pray for

  2019. your hands

  2020. to be upon

  2021. it,

  2022. O Lord.

  2023. I pray that

  2024. we would

  2025. not be a

  2026. people who

  2027. are fearful,

  2028. but a

  2029. people of

  2030. power.

  2031. I pray that

  2032. your spirit

  2033. would truly,

  2034. O Lord,

  2035. bless us,

  2036. fill us,

  2037. O God.

  2038. I pray that

  2039. we'd be

  2040. people of

  2041. prayer,

  2042. O Lord.

  2043. I pray that

  2044. we would be

  2045. people who

  2046. act, O

  2047. Lord,

  2048. not only talk,

  2049. O Lord,

  2050. that as James

  2051. says, that we

  2052. would be people

  2053. of faith and

  2054. of works,

  2055. O Lord,

  2056. that we would

  2057. actively go out

  2058. and evangelize.

  2059. I pray for

  2060. our kids as

  2061. well.

  2062. We pray for

  2063. their salvation.

  2064. Please save

  2065. them, O Lord,

  2066. from the

  2067. damnation of

  2068. hell, O Lord,

  2069. and our

  2070. family members.

  2071. Amen.

  2072. through the
