  1. Okay, so today I'm going to talk to you about good news or the gospel.

  2. That's what the gospel means, good news, incarnate or in the flesh.

  3. I'm excited to talk about the gospel this morning.

  4. A little backdrop.

  5. Last week I was not excited about the gospel.

  6. Shocker.

  7. But I say that, all chugging aside, to say that we have sin and we're sinners.

  8. So we need to be saved.

  9. And the gospel is the good news that even when we don't desire God, God gives us himself as true food to nourish us.

  10. So I'm going to talk about the gospel today.

  11. It's not going to be anything new.

  12. You all have heard it.

  13. Some of you might honestly not be excited about it, but my prayer is that you would be this morning.

  14. So it's kind of a festive thing because Christmas is in a couple days.

  15. And we remember what happened on Christmas, on the night Jesus was born.

  16. He came into the world.

  17. That was the inauguration, the first step of the good news in action.

  18. It's him actually condescending.

  19. And so it's a festive message, but it's not just for Christmas.

  20. Obviously, this is for every single day of the year, every waking moment of a believer's life.

  21. We need the gospel.

  22. And so I'm going to first start out by talking about what the gospel is.

  23. And as you guys listen, my prayer is that from the inward parts of you, you would be drawn to Christ.

  24. So Romans 1.16 says,

  25. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  26. to the Jew first and also the Greek.

  27. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  28. So right here, Paul says that the gospel is the power of God.

  29. Or that the gospel, the object of the gospel, the object of the good news is the power of God more specifically.

  30. What I mean by that is the gospel is just a message.

  31. It's good news, right?

  32. So if you tell somebody just a bunch of words, that's not the thing ultimately that saves them.

  33. But it's the object of the message, right?

  34. It's what the message teaches that saves.

  35. So God, in Christ Jesus, is the power that saves.

  36. Jesus Christ.

  37. And we proclaim that message.

  38. And so, he is both, Jesus is both the prophet of God,

  39. the one who speaks the words of God,

  40. and the Bible actually calls him the word made flesh.

  41. So he's both the prophet who speaks for God,

  42. but he is also the very word of God in the flesh, incarnate.

  43. It's important for us to know that because throughout a Christian's life,

  44. there's a lot of words that you hear.

  45. You know what I'm saying?

  46. And they can get old.

  47. Kind of like I mentioned before, we've all kind of heard this thing over and over again.

  48. But there is a difference between experiencing a flesh and body word,

  49. or something that you can actually see and feel,

  50. that I believe that the Lord wants us to experience.

  51. Like Seth was talking about food,

  52. I believe that God doesn't give food that doesn't nourish.

  53. You know, I believe that he does give food that actually does fill us.

  54. So, in the gospel is where we get that food.

  55. So, the gospel begins with God.

  56. You all know that God made man and creation perfect and good in the garden.

  57. And in Eden, there was a perfect relationship with creation, with the land,

  58. and with the creator of that creation, with God.

  59. And when man ate of the tree that God told him not to,

  60. it severed the relationship with God and with creation.

  61. So, ever since the garden, man has been trying to regain that relationship with God,

  62. either on his own terms or in his own strength.

  63. And so, there's been this striving in the hearts of man because of sin,

  64. because we broke God's commandment.

  65. Do not eat of the tree that I have told you not to.

  66. So, this has never been, you know, something that,

  67. since the beginning of time, has ever been aced, you know,

  68. on our own terms, in our own strength.

  69. No one has really got there.

  70. And if anyone confesses that they have,

  71. it would be a true form of self-righteousness.

  72. So, a practical example of maybe climbing the ladder of morality

  73. and trying to get to God, to regain fellowship,

  74. a practical example of this that I was listening to or reading about

  75. was when the Russians first put a man in outer space.

  76. And upon returning from the mission, there was a remark,

  77. I can't remember if it was the cosmonaut himself said this,

  78. or Russia kind of remarked that,

  79. they said that,

  80. we've been to outer space,

  81. and we didn't find God or heaven there.

  82. And C.S. Lewis actually responded to this remark by saying,

  83. this is like Hamlet, a character in Shakespeare's play,

  84. looking for Shakespeare in the attic of his home.

  85. Pretty true.

  86. C.S. Lewis says that in order for Hamlet to have a relationship with Shakespeare,

  87. Shakespeare would literally have to write himself into his own story.

  88. Okay, so that's the gospel in a very simple form.

  89. That God, the author of our story of humanity and creation,

  90. although man has permanently severed the relationship with God,

  91. God has taken it upon himself to do something.

  92. In spite of man's attempts,

  93. God has written himself into our story,

  94. not in vain and not to no avail, but to much.

  95. And that is the good news.

  96. So, a little bit more about the story.

  97. You guys know it, but here's a refresher.

  98. So, almost 2,000 years ago,

  99. the Bible teaches that in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy,

  100. Jesus was born of a virgin, the Virgin Mary.

  101. Isaiah 7 is the prophecy that fulfills that.

  102. And Matthew tells us that he comes into this world

  103. conceived of the Holy Spirit.

  104. He began his public ministry at the age of 30,

  105. and he accumulated followers,

  106. and for three years he healed,

  107. he taught,

  108. and he made bold claims that he was the only way.

  109. There was no other way to God.

  110. Okay, so think about, you know,

  111. from the beginning,

  112. this chasm between man and God.

  113. You know, man in his own strength

  114. has tried to figure out ways to get back to God,

  115. and then Jesus comes along and says,

  116. I'm the only way.

  117. There's only one way back to God.

  118. It's me.

  119. Okay?

  120. Very bold claims.

  121. The religious leaders didn't like his teaching,

  122. so they joined together,

  123. formed a,

  124. they invoked a riot,

  125. and brought false accusations against Jesus.

  126. And this ultimately led to a trial,

  127. a sentencing of death by Roman crucifixion.

  128. The Bible says that while Jesus hung on the cross,

  129. Jesus became the curse of sin for us.

  130. And that God placed all of the sin

  131. of all mankind onto Jesus.

  132. And when they took Jesus down from the cross,

  133. they put him in a tomb

  134. with a stone sealing the entrance,

  135. with Roman soldiers keeping guard over the tomb

  136. so that no one would come and take his body.

  137. But according to the scripture,

  138. on the third day he rose from the dead.

  139. And after appearing to many eyewitnesses

  140. and instructing his disciples,

  141. he ascended into heaven

  142. where he is seated at the right hand of God

  143. and serves as our advocate.

  144. So, again, you guys have heard this,

  145. but what does this have to do with you?

  146. You know, all these words that I'm saying.

  147. This happened.

  148. It's a fact, you know.

  149. Many major world religions dispute the details of the facts,

  150. but pretty much everyone confesses that Jesus did live.

  151. He did die.

  152. Some don't think he didn't rise.

  153. You know, I think it's the Jews saying that he died but did not rise.

  154. The Muslims say he didn't die.

  155. And the Christians confess that he indeed died

  156. and indeed did rise.

  157. But no one disputes that Jesus didn't live.

  158. It's part of history.

  159. So it happened.

  160. So what does this have to do with us?

  161. You know, all the way many years later.

  162. Well, the Bible says that we all have sinned

  163. and fallen short of God's perfect standard.

  164. And there's nothing in us,

  165. no good thing in us that can commend us to God.

  166. All of our efforts, all of our righteous deeds

  167. fall short of God's perfect standard.

  168. There's nothing that we can do that can fix

  169. what our sins have broken.

  170. The Bible says that the wages for sin

  171. or the payment for our sins is death.

  172. What we deserve for falling short of God's standard is death.

  173. Not just death of an immediate kind,

  174. but an everlasting death.

  175. We deserve that.

  176. And God calls men everywhere to repent of their sin

  177. and trusting Christ to be saved

  178. and to live a righteous life.

  179. And if we trust Christ like this,

  180. the Bible says we have peace with God.

  181. Now, peace is the main thing

  182. that is propagated in the world today

  183. as either a nice goal or the ultimate end.

  184. You know, you might ask somebody like,

  185. what do you want?

  186. You know, if you could wish for anything.

  187. People kind of just, you know,

  188. flagrant and say, world peace.

  189. You know, that wars would cease.

  190. That's a good thing to wish for.

  191. But unfortunately, the world does not know

  192. how God himself has wrought peace to come about.

  193. Romans 5 says that

  194. through Christ we have peace with God.

  195. Okay, so,

  196. if anyone comes to any solution for peace

  197. that doesn't involve Christ,

  198. it is not true peace.

  199. It's a counterfeit peace.

  200. It's a aesthetic peace.

  201. You know,

  202. the only true peace ultimately comes through the gospel.

  203. And whether we believe that or not,

  204. the day will disclose it.

  205. What I mean by that is one day,

  206. God will come again and make all things right.

  207. But it will not be for a second gospel preaching

  208. so as to save those who are lost.

  209. He came once to deal with sin

  210. and he's coming a second time to judge.

  211. And this is a sobering thing.

  212. This is a sobering thing for us who are alive now

  213. and who have his first coming.

  214. So,

  215. the gospel is very important.

  216. It's not just a one and done deal.

  217. You're not just baptized and that seals you.

  218. You get to do whatever you want.

  219. You know,

  220. the gospel is,

  221. like I said in the beginning,

  222. nourishment that carries you along.

  223. I talked a little bit,

  224. I just mentioned some major world religions,

  225. but

  226. I was kind of studying

  227. about

  228. why people arrive to certain religions

  229. that they do

  230. and why,

  231. you know,

  232. Christianity is so cool and unique,

  233. you know.

  234. and it is unique.

  235. It doesn't seem to be cool

  236. in many respects,

  237. but it is unique

  238. and unlike any other religion.

  239. And if I can dare say that Christianity

  240. is actually not a religion,

  241. I'll explain why

  242. compared to the other ones,

  243. specifically because

  244. of how we understand religion

  245. as a whole.

  246. So,

  247. if you did a survey

  248. of all religions of the world,

  249. you'd probably find,

  250. you know,

  251. the first thing is

  252. some type of initiation,

  253. some type of,

  254. you know,

  255. entrance to the religion,

  256. something,

  257. set of beliefs,

  258. maybe something you have to put behind,

  259. something that initiates you.

  260. And then,

  261. and then in the middle,

  262. when you get going,

  263. there's a,

  264. there's,

  265. you know,

  266. stipulations of the religion

  267. that you have to follow.

  268. There's a way.

  269. Each religion has a way.

  270. And then at the end,

  271. you might call it,

  272. you know,

  273. a gate,

  274. you know,

  275. some,

  276. of some kind of pass through,

  277. the final test

  278. or the final judgment.

  279. You know,

  280. each religion kind of has those things.

  281. And if you kept the way well enough,

  282. then you might have a chance

  283. about getting into heaven

  284. or nirvana

  285. or whatever,

  286. you know,

  287. the,

  288. that end gate is.

  289. And so,

  290. many people

  291. believe

  292. that their good deeds,

  293. their following the way,

  294. will

  295. maybe guarantee

  296. access through that final gate.

  297. Maybe they'll,

  298. maybe they'll escape judgment.

  299. Maybe if my good deeds

  300. outweigh my bad deeds,

  301. you know,

  302. I'll be accepted.

  303. But

  304. this,

  305. in fact,

  306. is not how Christianity is.

  307. That's not what I believe

  308. Christianity says.

  309. This is

  310. actually how many Christians

  311. do believe

  312. in their hearts.

  313. if I just

  314. clean myself up,

  315. maybe I'll be accepted

  316. through that last

  317. and final gate.

  318. But there's this struggle

  319. inside of,

  320. well,

  321. I hope that I'll be accepted,

  322. you know,

  323. but there's no assurance.

  324. There's no guarantee.

  325. And

  326. what I see,

  327. the beautiful thing

  328. about Christianity

  329. is that

  330. the acceptance

  331. does not come

  332. at the end.

  333. we're not held

  334. in derision

  335. our whole lives

  336. wondering,

  337. do I,

  338. will I,

  339. if I do enough,

  340. if I'm clean enough,

  341. will I be accepted?

  342. You know,

  343. there's not this doubt.

  344. But

  345. the thing about religion

  346. is that

  347. the acceptance

  348. comes at the beginning.

  349. And that's not to say

  350. that

  351. there is not a way

  352. or there isn't

  353. requirements,

  354. but the fundamental

  355. drawing

  356. to the way

  357. is that you get

  358. acceptance at the beginning.

  359. The good news

  360. of the gospel

  361. is that

  362. instead of

  363. having a merit-based

  364. religion

  365. depending upon

  366. our merits,

  367. those things are hidden

  368. because of the merits

  369. of Christ.

  370. Because Christ

  371. worked on our behalf,

  372. because Christ

  373. is the way,

  374. right,

  375. then

  376. he guarantees

  377. assurance

  378. to us

  379. so that

  380. we can have

  381. confidence

  382. that that final gate,

  383. that we will

  384. indeed be accepted

  385. not on the basis

  386. of our own works,

  387. but on his own

  388. righteousness.

  389. Okay?

  390. This is why

  391. the gospel

  392. is good news.

  393. Because many people

  394. live in dread

  395. not knowing.

  396. They don't have

  397. peace with God.

  398. They strive

  399. to have peace

  400. with their deeds,

  401. but they don't

  402. have peace

  403. with God

  404. in the ultimate sense,

  405. which permeates

  406. a clean conscience,

  407. which makes you

  408. free

  409. in your heart

  410. and in your mind.

  411. This is true

  412. of many people,

  413. Christians included,

  414. if you can call them

  415. Christians.

  416. This is why

  417. the gospel

  418. is good news,

  419. because he guaranteed

  420. the acceptance

  421. and we get it

  422. at the beginning

  423. as assurance.

  424. The Bible says

  425. that the Holy Spirit

  426. seals us

  427. when we're saved.

  428. That's pretty,

  429. that's like guaranteed

  430. language right there.

  431. John Lennox,

  432. a famous mathematician,

  433. tells a story

  434. about his wife,

  435. wanting to marry

  436. his wife on the subject.

  437. I think it's

  438. kind of funny,

  439. but cool,

  440. because he was

  441. in Cambridge

  442. and he says,

  443. suppose I see

  444. this lady

  445. and I get to know her

  446. and eventually

  447. ask her to marry me

  448. and I say,

  449. Sally,

  450. I think this is

  451. his wife's name,

  452. Sally,

  453. I'd like to marry you,

  454. but I've got

  455. a cookbook here

  456. and it's got

  457. a lot of rules

  458. in it,

  459. inside of it,

  460. and if you follow

  461. the rules of the cookbook

  462. for our meals,

  463. you know,

  464. say for 40 years,

  465. very carefully,

  466. I will think

  467. about accepting me.

  468. And,

  469. how ridiculous

  470. is that,

  471. you know?

  472. But it's not,

  473. it's not that

  474. we think

  475. upon the

  476. obedience

  477. or adherence

  478. to the rules

  479. that the acceptance

  480. comes,

  481. but it's actually

  482. at the beginning

  483. that both of you

  484. in the marriage

  485. come together

  486. for acceptance,

  487. saying whatever comes,

  488. you know,

  489. whoever,

  490. you know,

  491. the terms of the covenant,

  492. if they're violated,

  493. I will remain faithful,

  494. you are accepted to me.

  495. That's how we treat

  496. one another

  497. in an actual marriage,

  498. but that's a reflection

  499. of how God

  500. treats us in Christ.

  501. Is it,

  502. is actually

  503. the acceptance happens

  504. at the beginning

  505. because,

  506. because she does,

  507. because Sally

  508. doesn't have to keep

  509. the rules

  510. of the cookbook,

  511. it actually gives her

  512. the,

  513. it frees her

  514. to keep the rules

  515. and to learn

  516. how to cook.

  517. You see,

  518. if we're guaranteed

  519. at the beginning

  520. that God

  521. would accept us,

  522. then it sets us free

  523. to actually learn

  524. to obey God

  525. versus being condemned

  526. under the law

  527. as we likely should be,

  528. God in Christ Jesus

  529. meets all the demands

  530. for us.

  531. This is really important.

  532. So,

  533. if it's not,

  534. if it doesn't set you free

  535. to obey,

  536. listen to me carefully,

  537. if it doesn't set you free

  538. to obey God,

  539. it's not the gospel.

  540. the gospel sets you free

  541. to obey God

  542. because it's not

  543. resting on our works,

  544. it's not resting

  545. on our obedience

  546. or adherence,

  547. but it rests on God himself.

  548. And that transforms you

  549. from the inside out.

  550. That,

  551. indeed,

  552. is good news.

  553. Okay?

  554. And as we enter

  555. to Christmas,

  556. I pray that

  557. this is the light

  558. and true meaning

  559. of Christmas,

  560. that we see

  561. what Christ did

  562. by condescending

  563. is he inaugurated

  564. for humanity

  565. a better way

  566. through himself.

  567. So,

  568. we celebrate

  569. the arrival

  570. of Jesus

  571. and the preaching

  572. of the good news.

  573. We don't celebrate

  574. the gifts,

  575. we celebrate

  576. the giver,

  577. right?

  578. We don't celebrate

  579. the day ultimately,

  580. although we do,

  581. not demonizing the day,

  582. but we celebrate

  583. the object of the day,

  584. which is Jesus.

  585. We celebrate

  586. the moment

  587. when light

  588. broke into

  589. our darkness,

  590. which indeed

  591. there was darkness.

  592. Don't be deceived

  593. that this world

  594. was all light.

  595. Christ has dawned

  596. by being born

  597. into our darkness

  598. and that's

  599. reason to rejoice.

  600. This is a quote

  601. from the song

  602. Joy to the World,

  603. which kind of

  604. spoke to me

  605. earlier this week.

  606. It says,

  607. No more let sins

  608. and sorrows grow,

  609. nor thorns

  610. infest the ground.

  611. He comes to make

  612. his blessings flow

  613. far as the curse

  614. is found.

  615. Far as the curse

  616. is found.

  617. Galatians 3.10

  618. says,

  619. Cursed be anyone

  620. or everyone

  621. who does not abide

  622. by all things

  623. written in the book

  624. of the law

  625. and do them.

  626. Cursed be that man

  627. who does not obey.

  628. Now it is evident

  629. that no one

  630. is justified

  631. before God

  632. by the law,

  633. for the righteous

  634. shall live by faith.

  635. But the law

  636. is not of faith,

  637. rather the one

  638. who does them

  639. shall live by them.

  640. Christ redeemed us

  641. from the curse

  642. of the law

  643. by becoming

  644. a curse for us.

  645. For it is written,

  646. Cursed is everyone

  647. who is hanged

  648. on a tree,

  649. so that in Christ Jesus

  650. the blessing of Abraham

  651. might come

  652. to the Gentiles

  653. so that we might

  654. receive the promised

  655. spirit through faith.

  656. Cursed be the person

  657. who doesn't obey.

  658. That's all of us.

  659. All of us

  660. have come under

  661. the curse of sin,

  662. have followed

  663. in the footsteps

  664. of Adam,

  665. like Adam and Eve

  666. did in the garden.

  667. but we must look

  668. to the object

  669. of our faith

  670. who redeemed us

  671. from the curse

  672. of the law

  673. by becoming

  674. that curse.

  675. This is

  676. the

  677. saturation

  678. that believers

  679. need to have.

  680. We need to look

  681. to God

  682. not just as

  683. you know

  684. Jesus died

  685. for my sins

  686. you know

  687. I know

  688. it's fine

  689. you know

  690. I've heard that

  691. a thousand times

  692. like I know

  693. he died for my sins

  694. but there's a difference

  695. between knowing

  696. what Jesus did

  697. through dying

  698. for our sins

  699. deep down

  700. in our hearts

  701. knowing that

  702. we were condemned

  703. under the law

  704. that we were

  705. not

  706. sick

  707. and approaching

  708. death

  709. but actually

  710. already dead.

  711. Not spiritually

  712. sick

  713. but spiritually

  714. dead in our sins

  715. and that we

  716. needed resurrection

  717. and that God

  718. himself did that

  719. for us in Christ.

  720. This is

  721. the type of

  722. saturation

  723. that makes you

  724. worship

  725. that makes you

  726. come to

  727. a gathering

  728. like this

  729. and lift your

  730. hands

  731. you know

  732. even if

  733. the worship

  734. is spotty

  735. you know

  736. sometimes you

  737. have a scraggly

  738. voice

  739. and that's okay

  740. but we don't

  741. worship good music

  742. we worship God

  743. who in Christ

  744. has reconciled

  745. the world

  746. to himself

  747. the Bible says

  748. and so

  749. I hope

  750. that as you

  751. guys

  752. gather

  753. with your

  754. families

  755. and celebrate

  756. Christmas

  757. that this is

  758. the thing

  759. that you do

  760. you live

  761. in worship

  762. that you

  763. live

  764. whatever you

  765. do

  766. you don't

  767. worship

  768. the thing

  769. you don't

  770. worship

  771. family

  772. ultimately

  773. but you

  774. worship

  775. God

  776. you say

  777. God

  778. what you

  779. have done

  780. in Christ

  781. for me

  782. is worthy

  783. of praise

  784. for my

  785. inward man

  786. you know

  787. and so

  788. let that be

  789. a worship

  790. of Christ

  791. church

  792. I pray

  793. that Christ

  794. church

  795. does that

  796. that we

  797. would be

  798. true to

  799. our name

  800. Christ

  801. church

  802. we would

  803. exalt

  804. him

  805. and it

  806. would be

  807. worship

  808. so that's

  809. my exhortation

  810. for I

  811. have five

  812. points

  813. to end

  814. the sermon

  815. but my

  816. exhortation

  817. is to

  818. treat

  819. Christmas

  820. as going

  821. to the

  822. new year

  823. your

  824. relationship

  825. with God

  826. as worship

  827. through the

  828. gospel

  829. let it be

  830. worship

  831. whatever

  832. event that

  833. you go

  834. to

  835. don't

  836. don't

  837. look at

  838. whatever's

  839. out here

  840. your

  841. circumstances

  842. the people

  843. you interact

  844. with

  845. as the

  846. means for

  847. life

  848. what

  849. determines

  850. how you

  851. are

  852. what

  853. feeds

  854. you

  855. but

  856. from

  857. the

  858. inside

  859. is

  860. where

  861. you

  862. get

  863. life

  864. the

  865. Lord

  866. said

  867. I

  868. will

  869. put

  870. my

  871. spirit

  872. within

  873. you

  874. right

  875. so

  876. God

  877. is

  878. dwelling

  879. in

  880. us

  881. we

  882. don't

  883. look

  884. to

  885. outward

  886. things

  887. to

  888. satisfy

  889. us

  890. we

  891. don't

  892. look

  893. for

  894. peace

  895. out

  896. here

  897. we

  898. look

  899. for

  900. peace

  901. in

  902. here

  903. if

  904. God

  905. has

  906. deposited

  907. himself

  908. in

  909. us

  910. then

  911. we

  912. are

  913. free

  914. from

  915. the

  916. confines

  917. of

  918. whatever

  919. happens

  920. on the

  921. outside

  922. so let

  923. it be

  924. worship

  925. this

  926. season

  927. so I've

  928. just got

  929. five

  930. points

  931. they're

  932. less

  933. of

  934. exhortations

  935. and

  936. more

  937. of

  938. kind

  939. of

  940. confessions

  941. about

  942. who

  943. Jesus

  944. is

  945. and

  946. what I

  947. mean

  948. by

  949. that

  950. is

  951. Jesus

  952. has

  953. many

  954. attributes

  955. to

  956. himself

  957. I've

  958. chosen

  959. five

  960. that I

  961. think

  962. if you

  963. dwell

  964. on

  965. these

  966. it

  967. will

  968. make

  969. you

  970. worship

  971. so

  972. the

  973. first

  974. point

  975. of

  976. Jesus

  977. identity

  978. I

  979. think

  980. it's

  981. important

  982. to

  983. dwell

  984. on

  985. is

  986. him

  987. as

  988. priest

  989. he

  990. is

  991. the

  992. high

  993. priest

  994. of

  995. God

  996. the

  997. Bible

  998. said

  999. he's

  1000. made

  1001. like

  1002. us

  1003. in

  1004. every

  1005. respect

  1006. Hebrews

  1007. 6

  1008. says

  1009. that

  1010. you

  1011. might

  1012. say

  1013. why

  1014. couldn't

  1015. God

  1016. just

  1017. drop

  1018. down

  1019. and

  1020. do

  1021. the

  1022. deed

  1023. die

  1024. on

  1025. the

  1026. cross

  1027. rise

  1028. again

  1029. three

  1030. days

  1031. it'll

  1032. be

  1033. done

  1034. why

  1035. do

  1036. he

  1037. have

  1038. to

  1039. be

  1040. born

  1041. why

  1042. do

  1043. he

  1044. have

  1045. to

  1046. live

  1047. 30

  1048. years

  1049. before

  1050. he

  1051. started

  1052. his

  1053. ministry

  1054. because

  1055. he

  1056. had

  1057. to

  1058. be

  1059. made

  1060. Hebrews

  1061. says

  1062. that

  1063. he

  1064. sympathizes

  1065. with

  1066. our

  1067. weakness

  1068. Hebrews

  1069. 4

  1070. says

  1071. since

  1072. we

  1073. have

  1074. a

  1075. great

  1076. high

  1077. priest

  1078. who

  1079. has

  1080. passed

  1081. through

  1082. the

  1083. heavens

  1084. Jesus

  1085. the

  1086. son

  1087. of

  1088. God

  1089. let

  1090. us

  1091. hold

  1092. fast

  1093. our

  1094. confession

  1095. for

  1096. we

  1097. do

  1098. not

  1099. have

  1100. a

  1101. high

  1102. priest

  1103. who

  1104. is

  1105. unable

  1106. to

  1107. sympathize

  1108. with

  1109. our

  1110. weaknesses

  1111. but

  1112. one

  1113. who

  1114. in

  1115. every

  1116. respect

  1117. has

  1118. been

  1119. tempted

  1120. as

  1121. we

  1122. are

  1123. yet

  1124. without

  1125. sin

  1126. let

  1127. us

  1128. then

  1129. with

  1130. confidence

  1131. drawn

  1132. near

  1133. to

  1134. the

  1135. throne

  1136. of

  1137. grace

  1138. that

  1139. we

  1140. may

  1141. receive

  1142. mercy

  1143. and

  1144. find

  1145. grace

  1146. in

  1147. the

  1148. time

  1149. of

  1150. need

  1151. he's

  1152. our

  1153. high

  1154. priest

  1155. who

  1156. sympathizes

  1157. with

  1158. us

  1159. in

  1160. Hebrews

  1161. 5

  1162. it

  1163. talks

  1164. about

  1165. how

  1166. the

  1167. priest

  1168. doesn't

  1169. he has

  1170. to offer

  1171. sacrifices

  1172. for his

  1173. own

  1174. sins

  1175. since

  1176. he

  1177. is

  1178. beset

  1179. with

  1180. weakness

  1181. he

  1182. offers

  1183. for

  1184. the

  1185. sins

  1186. of

  1187. the

  1188. people

  1189. on

  1190. their

  1191. behalf

  1192. but

  1193. he

  1194. has

  1195. to

  1196. do

  1197. his

  1198. own

  1199. because

  1200. he's

  1201. a

  1202. weak

  1203. vessel

  1204. as

  1205. well

  1206. so

  1207. Jesus

  1208. is

  1209. the

  1210. high

  1211. priest

  1212. of

  1213. God

  1214. Hebrews

  1215. 7

  1216. says

  1217. that

  1218. he

  1219. always

  1220. lives

  1221. to

  1222. make

  1223. intercession

  1224. for

  1225. them

  1226. this

  1227. is

  1228. this

  1229. is

  1230. the

  1231. intercession

  1232. is a

  1233. priestly

  1234. function

  1235. we see

  1236. that

  1237. in

  1238. John

  1239. 17

  1240. when

  1241. Jesus

  1242. prays

  1243. his

  1244. prayer

  1245. for

  1246. his

  1247. disciples

  1248. famously

  1249. called

  1250. the

  1251. high

  1252. priestly

  1253. prayer

  1254. Jesus

  1255. is

  1256. the

  1257. high

  1258. priest

  1259. because

  1260. he

  1261. administers

  1262. the

  1263. sacrifice

  1264. of

  1265. God

  1266. through

  1267. his

  1268. own

  1269. blood

  1270. which

  1271. brings me

  1272. to my

  1273. next

  1274. point

  1275. point

  1276. number

  1277. two

  1278. Jesus

  1279. is

  1280. the

  1281. scapegoat

  1282. and

  1283. the

  1284. Passover

  1285. lamb

  1286. Leviticus

  1287. 16

  1288. 21

  1289. says

  1290. that

  1291. Aaron

  1292. shall

  1293. lay

  1294. both

  1295. his

  1296. hands

  1297. on

  1298. the

  1299. head

  1300. of

  1301. the

  1302. live

  1303. goat

  1304. and

  1305. confess

  1306. over

  1307. it

  1308. all

  1309. the

  1310. iniquities

  1311. of

  1312. the

  1313. people

  1314. of

  1315. Israel

  1316. and

  1317. all

  1318. their

  1319. transgressions

  1320. and

  1321. all

  1322. their

  1323. sins

  1324. and

  1325. he

  1326. shall

  1327. put

  1328. them

  1329. on

  1330. the

  1331. head

  1332. of

  1333. the

  1334. goat

  1335. and

  1336. send

  1337. it

  1338. away

  1339. into

  1340. the

  1341. wilderness

  1342. by

  1343. the

  1344. hand

  1345. of

  1346. a

  1347. man

  1348. who

  1349. is

  1350. in

  1351. readiness

  1352. this

  1353. is

  1354. a

  1355. picture

  1356. of

  1357. what

  1358. has

  1359. been

  1360. done

  1361. to

  1362. Jesus

  1363. Jesus

  1364. is

  1365. our

  1366. scapegoat

  1367. he

  1368. most

  1369. definitely

  1370. had

  1371. brutal

  1372. hands

  1373. laid

  1374. on

  1375. him

  1376. and

  1377. he

  1378. was

  1379. sent

  1380. out

  1381. outside

  1382. the

  1383. gate

  1384. outside

  1385. the

  1386. camp

  1387. and

  1388. he

  1389. died

  1390. outside

  1391. the

  1392. city

  1393. he

  1394. was

  1459. is

  1460. I

  1461. mentioned

  1462. this

  1463. before

  1464. but

  1465. Jesus

  1466. is

  1467. the

  1469. and

  1470. the

  1482. that

  1483. Jesus

  1484. says

  1485. that

  1486. in

  1487. John

  1488. 12

  1489. he

  1490. says

  1491. I

  1511. is

  1512. the

  1516. you

  1517. know

  1518. old

  1519. prophets

  1520. we

  1521. wouldn't

  1522. necessarily

  1523. follow

  1524. but

  1525. we

  1526. would

  1527. adhere

  1528. to

  1529. the

  1530. word

  1531. Jesus

  1532. is

  1533. the

  1538. he's

  1539. the

  1546. that

  1547. the

  1549. rejected

  1550. and

  1551. the

  1552. prophetic

  1553. word

  1554. that speaks

  1555. better than

  1556. the blood

  1557. of

  1558. Abel

  1559. the word

  1560. of

  1561. Abel

  1562. the word

  1563. of

  1564. Abel

  1565. cries out

  1566. for

  1567. vengeance

  1568. and

  1570. but

  1571. the

  1572. word

  1573. of

  1574. Christ

  1575. cries

  1576. out

  1577. for

  1580. met

  1581. the

  1590. of

  1591. Jesus

  1592. that I

  1594. is

  1595. precious

  1596. to

  1597. dwell

  1598. on

  1599. and

  1600. we

  1601. must

  1602. dwell

  1605. that

  1606. he

  1607. is

  1608. king

  1609. Jesus

  1610. is

  1611. king

  1612. Revelation

  1613. 19

  1616. he

  1619. in

  1620. a

  1621. robe

  1622. dipped

  1636. of

  1637. God

  1638. on

  1639. his

  1649. written

  1650. king

  1651. of

  1652. kings

  1653. and

  1666. every

  1667. other

  1668. king

  1669. is

  1670. under

  1671. him

  1672. again

  1673. he

  1674. says

  1675. in

  1676. John

  1677. 18

  1678. my

  1679. kingdom

  1680. is

  1681. not

  1682. he's

  1683. a

  1684. king

  1685. but

  1686. not

  1687. without

  1688. a

  1689. kingdom

  1690. he

  1691. rules

  1692. and

  1693. we

  1694. if

  1695. we

  1696. are

  1697. in

  1698. Christ

  1699. are

  1700. part

  1701. of

  1702. that

  1703. kingdom

  1704. Peter

  1705. says

  1706. in

  1707. Acts

  1708. 2

  1709. 36

  1710. let

  1711. all

  1712. the

  1713. house

  1714. of

  1715. Israel

  1716. therefore

  1717. know

  1718. for

  1719. certain

  1720. that

  1721. God

  1722. has

  1723. made

  1724. him

  1725. both

  1726. Lord

  1727. and

  1728. Christ

  1729. both

  1730. king

  1731. and

  1732. savior

  1733. right

  1734. so

  1735. that

  1736. goes

  1737. against

  1738. you

  1739. know

  1740. the

  1741. hyper

  1742. grace

  1743. people

  1744. that's

  1745. like

  1746. he

  1747. saved

  1748. me

  1749. he

  1750. saved

  1751. me

  1752. I

  1753. don't

  1754. have

  1755. to

  1756. do

  1757. anything

  1758. it's

  1759. like

  1760. hang on

  1761. it says

  1762. Lord

  1763. and

  1764. Christ

  1765. you

  1766. have

  1767. to

  1768. follow

  1769. him

  1770. you

  1771. have

  1772. to

  1773. obey

  1774. him

  1775. he

  1776. is

  1777. indeed

  1778. savior

  1779. which

  1780. sets

  1781. you

  1782. free

  1783. to

  1784. obey

  1785. him

  1786. as

  1787. king

  1788. right

  1789. he

  1790. he

  1791. both

  1792. king

  1793. and

  1794. savior

  1795. !

  1796. last

  1797. point

  1798. the

  1799. identity

  1800. of

  1801. Jesus

  1802. to

  1803. dwell

  1804. in

  1805. his

  1806. worship

  1807. in

  1808. our

  1809. hearts

  1810. is

  1811. he

  1812. he

  1813. is

  1814. our

  1815. friend

  1816. possibly

  1817. one

  1818. of the

  1819. most

  1820. moving

  1821. things

  1822. the

  1823. almighty

  1824. God

  1825. can

  1826. say

  1827. is

  1828. to

  1829. call

  1830. us

  1831. friends

  1832. think

  1833. of

  1834. the

  1835. highest

  1836. king

  1837. you

  1838. know

  1839. on

  1840. earth

  1841. you

  1842. know

  1843. and

  1844. regard

  1845. the

  1846. lowest

  1847. person

  1848. as

  1849. a

  1850. friend

  1851. much

  1852. more

  1853. God

  1854. the

  1855. creator

  1856. regards

  1857. us

  1858. as

  1859. friends

  1860. he

  1861. says

  1862. in

  1863. John

  1864. to

  1865. his

  1866. disciples

  1867. on

  1868. his

  1869. last

  1870. night

  1871. with

  1872. them

  1873. no

  1874. longer

  1875. do

  1876. I

  1877. call

  1878. you

  1879. servants

  1880. but

  1881. I

  1882. call

  1883. you

  1884. friends

  1885. someone

  1886. mentioned

  1887. that this

  1888. actually

  1889. must have

  1890. been deeply

  1891. moving

  1892. to

  1893. his

  1894. disciples

  1895. because

  1896. at that

  1897. point

  1898. I think

  1899. only

  1900. Moses

  1901. and

  1902. Abraham

  1903. in

  1904. scripture

  1905. were

  1906. called

  1907. God's

  1908. friends

  1909. God

  1910. spoke to

  1911. Moses

  1912. as

  1913. someone

  1914. would

  1915. speak

  1916. with

  1917. a

  1918. friend

  1919. Abraham

  1920. is

  1921. called

  1922. the

  1923. friend

  1924. of

  1925. God

  1926. so

  1927. when

  1928. Jesus

  1929. kind

  1930. of

  1931. moved

  1932. from

  1933. servants

  1934. to

  1935. friends

  1936. I

  1937. can

  1938. imagine

  1939. maybe

  1940. what

  1941. they

  1942. felt

  1943. on

  1944. that

  1945. night

  1946. especially

  1947. before

  1948. he

  1949. went

  1950. to

  1951. the

  1952. cross

  1953. but

  1954. this

  1955. is

  1956. how

  1957. we

  1958. need

  1959. to

  1960. understand

  1961. how

  1962. God

  1963. speaks

  1964. with

  1965. us

  1966. he

  1967. doesn't

  1968. deal

  1969. with

  1970. us

  1971. just

  1972. as

  1973. his

  1974. servants

  1975. right

  1976. although

  1977. we

  1978. do

  1979. serve

  1980. him

  1981. but

  1982. he

  1983. deals

  1984. with

  1985. us

  1986. as

  1987. friends

  1988. through

  1989. Jesus

  1990. Christ

  1991. so

  1992. we

  1993. so

  1994. we

  1995. know

  1996. that

  1997. the

  1998. relationship

  1999. that

  2000. we

  2001. have

  2002. with

  2003. God

  2004. is

  2005. not

  2006. one

  2007. of

  2008. master

  2009. slave

  2010. alone

  2011. in

  2012. fact

  2013. it

  2014. isn't

  2015. slavery

  2016. but

  2017. freedom

  2018. in

  2019. friendship

  2020. he

  2021. calls

  2022. his

  2023. friends

  2024. so

  2025. God

  2026. is

  2027. the

  2028. high

  2029. priest

  2030. he's

  2031. the

  2032. high

  2033. priest

  2034. of

  2035. God

  2036. who

  2037. intercedes

  2038. for

  2039. us

  2040. he's

  2041. the

  2042. Passover

  2043. lamb

  2044. who

  2045. was

  2046. sacrificed

  2047. for

  2048. us

  2049. he's

  2050. the

  2051. prophet

  2052. and

  2053. the

  2054. word

  2055. made

  2056. flesh

  2057. who

  2058. has

  2059. dwelt

  2060. among

  2061. us

  2062. he's

  2063. the

  2064. king

  2065. who

  2066. rules

  2067. and

  2068. a rope

  2069. dipped

  2070. in

  2071. blood

  2072. and

  2073. he's

  2074. our

  2075. friend

  2076. these

  2077. are

  2078. five

  2079. things

  2080. that

  2081. nourished

  2082. me

  2083. as

  2084. I

  2085. was

  2086. preparing

  2087. for

  2088. this

  2089. I

  2090. think

  2091. that

  2092. it

  2093. should

  2094. nourish

  2095. us

  2096. as well

  2097. as

  2098. body

  2099. we

  2100. should

  2101. dwell

  2102. on

  2103. it

  2104. we

  2105. should

  2106. let

  2107. it

  2108. saturate

  2109. into

  2110. us

  2111. we

  2112. did

  2113. not

  2114. die

  2115. on

  2116. that

  2117. cross

  2118. God

  2119. did

  2120. he

  2121. was

  2122. sacrificed

  2123. let us

  2124. give him

  2125. the reward

  2126. of his

  2127. suffering

  2128. with

  2129. our

  2130. lives

  2131. so

  2132. as

  2133. I

  2134. close

  2135. recalling

  2136. those

  2137. five

  2138. things

  2139. I

  2140. would

  2141. just

  2142. ask

  2143. a

  2144. simple

  2145. question

  2146. which

  2147. is

  2148. does

  2149. your

  2150. life

  2151. long

  2152. to be

  2153. transformed

  2154. by the

  2155. gospel

  2156. and do

  2157. you believe

  2158. the gospel

  2159. does it

  2160. make its

  2161. home in

  2162. you

  2163. does God

  2164. reside

  2165. deep down

  2166. so as

  2167. to feed

  2168. you

  2169. us as

  2170. believers

  2171. we need

  2172. that

  2173. we need

  2174. to come

  2175. to God

  2176. Jesus

  2177. said

  2178. if anyone

  2179. thirsts

  2180. let him

  2181. come to

  2182. me

  2183. you know

  2184. you can't

  2185. come to him

  2186. if you're

  2187. not thirsty

  2188. that's a good

  2189. prayer to pray

  2190. Lord make me

  2191. thirsty for

  2192. you

  2193. forgive me

  2194. for

  2195. seeking out

  2196. other things

  2197. going after

  2198. other gods

  2199. however great

  2200. however small

  2201. that might

  2202. be

  2203. let us

  2204. worship him

  2205. let us

  2206. give him

  2207. the reward

  2208. of his

  2209. suffering

  2210. and be

  2211. infused by

  2212. the very

  2213. life of

  2214. God

  2215. from our

  2216. inward

  2217. man

  2218. living out

  2219. as he

  2220. has

  2221. deposited

  2222. it in

  2223. us

  2224. this is

  2225. from

  2226. the

  2227. Christmas

  2228. hand

  2229. let all

  2230. mortal

  2231. flesh

  2232. keep

  2233. silent

  2234. speaking

  2235. of

  2236. worship

  2237. it says

  2238. rank on

  2239. rank

  2240. the hosts

  2241. of heaven

  2242. spread

  2243. their

  2244. vanguard

  2245. through

  2246. the sky

  2247. veil

  2248. their

  2249. faces

  2250. to

  2251. the

  2252. presence

  2253. as

  2254. with

  2255. ceaseless

  2256. voice

  2257. they cry

  2258. hallelujah

  2259. lord most

  2260. I

  2261. let that

  2262. come from

  2263. our hearts

  2264. as we

  2265. worship

  2266. one last

  2267. thing

  2268. this is a

  2269. quote

  2270. from

  2271. Augustine

  2272. and then

  2273. I'll

  2274. pray

  2275. it says

  2276. man's

  2277. maker

  2278. was made

  2279. man

  2280. that he

  2281. ruler of

  2282. the stars

  2283. might nurse

  2284. at his

  2285. mother's

  2286. breast

  2287. that the

  2288. bread

  2289. might hunger

  2290. the

  2291. fountain

  2292. thirst

  2293. the

  2294. light

  2295. sleep

  2296. the

  2297. way

  2298. be

  2299. tired

  2300. on

  2301. its

  2302. journey

  2303. that

  2304. truth

  2305. might

  2306. be

  2307. accused

  2308. of

  2309. false

  2310. witness

  2311. the

  2312. teacher

  2313. be

  2314. beaten

  2315. with

  2316. whips

  2317. the

  2318. foundation

  2319. be

  2320. suspended

  2321. on wood

  2322. that

  2323. strength

  2324. might

  2325. grow

  2326. weak

  2327. and that

  2328. the

  2329. healer

  2330. might

  2331. be

  2332. wounded

  2333. that

  2334. life

  2335. might

  2336. die

  2337. this is

  2338. God

  2339. who

  2340. came

  2341. down

  2342. in the

  2343. flesh

  2344. became

  2345. like us

  2346. in every

  2347. respect

  2348. he

  2349. says

  2350. intercedes

  2351. for us

  2352. now in

  2353. heaven

  2354. on our

  2355. behalf

  2356. and one

  2357. day we

  2358. will meet

  2359. him

  2360. let it

  2361. not be for

  2362. judgment

  2363. but for

  2364. salvation

  2365. on the

  2366. last day

  2367. when he

  2368. comes

  2369. again

  2370. him
