  1. It's our first Sunday in 2025, and so we're starting something that we're going to be

  2. doing every year, Lord willing, and that is asking the Lord what he has to say about our

  3. church for the year.

  4. If you look at the book of Revelation, there's seven churches in the beginning of the book

  5. of Revelation, and Jesus has thoughts about all those churches.

  6. He has a lot of corrections.

  7. He has some affirmations to some of those.

  8. But what he doesn't, you can't say that he doesn't have thoughts, okay?

  9. He has thoughts on all of those churches, and he has thoughts on our church as well.

  10. And so what we want to do is seek the Lord and say, Lord, what do you think about our

  11. church?

  12. What do you have for us in this new year?

  13. So that's something we did together, prayed towards this new year, asked the Lord, what

  14. are three words that you have for us for this year?

  15. And the three words that God gave us are character, family, and order.

  16. Character, family, and order, okay?

  17. And so I'm going to speak on all three of these.

  18. I'm going to start today by speaking on character, okay?

  19. We're going to talk today about character.

  20. You can turn to 2 Peter chapter 1 if you want to look at the main scripture we're going to

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  21. come off of.

  22. But one thing I wanted to say by way of intro as well is that something I've been thinking

  23. about is that a lot of times when people think of church, they think it's very complicated,

  24. very difficult.

  25. And because so many churches don't grow or because so many churches close their doors,

  26. that it must be really difficult to have a healthy church and for having a healthy church

  27. grow and thrive.

  28. But I think it's really important for us to look at it no different than you would look

  29. at anything else that's healthy.

  30. If something's healthy, it grows.

  31. If something that is alive always needs certain components to stay alive and to be healthy

  32. and to continue to grow, and the church is no different from that, okay?

  33. The church is no different from that.

  34. And most often, we tend to overcomplicate this in our hearts and minds.

  35. And so what it does is it breeds unbelief in us when we're trying to be the church and

  36. do church together.

  37. And we just need to be transformed by the renewing of our mind because when it really comes down

  38. to it, church isn't all that complicated on what makes it healthy because Jesus, and it

  39. would be one thing if we just didn't know and we had to figure it all out.

  40. But if you read the Bible, there are clear communications from the Bible on what it means

  41. to be a healthy church.

  42. There are clear components and different people, gifts that God has given to the church who

  43. are gifted in certain ways to build the church.

  44. When apostles are apostling and prophets are prophesying and being prophets and pastors are

  45. pastoring and teachers are teaching and evangelists are evangelizing,

  46. the church builds itself up and it grows, okay?

  47. That's just one aspect of it.

  48. That's just one verse.

  49. But there's multiple verses like that.

  50. There's multiple ways that the Bible says, hey, this is how you should build.

  51. There's multiple verses that say this is the way church should function.

  52. This is what a healthy church looks like.

  53. This is the components necessary.

  54. This is God's will.

  55. And it's important for us to get faith around the building blocks of God's kingdom in the

  56. context of his church.

  57. And instead of having our kind of default be, oh yeah, church is really hard to be healthy.

  58. Church is really hard to grow in a healthy way.

  59. Church is really hard to thrive.

  60. Well, is that true?

  61. Is it really as hard as we make it out to be?

  62. Or is it just that very often we're just missing the components that God so specifically, clearly

  63. gave us in his word to build the church his way?

  64. Does that make sense?

  65. I think it's an important question to ask.

  66. And it's something that I think God was stirring in my heart even this morning to ask you.

  67. And to ask you, where is your faith when it comes to the church?

  68. And is it based on what you have seen?

  69. And not to mention that so much of our faith ends up being on what has been called church

  70. and how successful or unsuccessful it's been.

  71. When most often in our culture, what has been called church is not church in fact.

  72. It's not.

  73. It's not the way God wanted it to be.

  74. It's not the way God prescribed it to be.

  75. It's not the way God's laid out in the scriptures for the church to be.

  76. And therefore, we should not let those churches in name only that end up being very weak,

  77. very feeble, that end up closing their doors, that end up not being thriving, alive churches,

  78. determine whether or not we're going to have faith that this church, Christ's church,

  79. is going to be in an alive and a thriving church.

  80. If you're doing that, I got a word for you this morning.

  81. It's a different word from the three words.

  82. Stop.

  83. Stop doing that.

  84. Okay?

  85. Don't do that.

  86. Don't think that way.

  87. Change your mind.

  88. Repent.

  89. And start thinking in faith according to the word of God, according to the ways of God.

  90. All right?

  91. So, 2 Peter 1, 3-10.

  92. So, character is one of those things that's very important to a healthy church.

  93. Character is extremely important to a healthy church.

  94. If you don't have character, you might say you.

  95. I'm talking about the people of the church because the church is people.

  96. Okay?

  97. If the people that comprise the church don't have character, it's not going to be healthy.

  98. It's not going to thrive.

  99. Okay?

  100. Let's look at the main text on this.

  101. 2 Peter 1, starting in verse 3.

  102. Okay?

  103. His divine power is granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.

  104. Through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence,

  105. by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises,

  106. so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature,

  107. having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desires.

  108. Okay?

  109. Verse 5, He says,

  110. For this reason, so all that He just laid out there, now He says,

  111. For this reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue.

  112. Virtue with knowledge.

  113. Knowledge with self-control.

  114. Self-control with steadfastness.

  115. Steadfastness with godliness.

  116. And godliness with brotherly affection.

  117. And brotherly affection with love.

  118. All character issues.

  119. Okay?

  120. Verse 8, He says,

  121. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing,

  122. they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  123. Whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he's blind,

  124. having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.

  125. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election.

  126. For if you practice these qualities, you will never fall.

  127. Wow!

  128. Right?

  129. That just lays it out there.

  130. Some really direct, specific things.

  131. All right?

  132. Some really direct, specific things.

  133. First, it starts off by saying these great things we've been given.

  134. His divine power has granted us all things that pertain to life and godliness.

  135. So, most often people say,

  136. Well, I just don't feel like I have everything I need for life and godliness.

  137. Well, your feelings betray you.

  138. What does the Bible say?

  139. Will you submit to your feelings when the Word says something different?

  140. What is your standard?

  141. Your feelings or the Word?

  142. God's Word says that his divine power has given you most things?

  143. No.

  144. All things that pertain to life and godliness.

  145. Well, I'm trying to do my life.

  146. I'm trying to be godly.

  147. Both things are difficult.

  148. Sometimes I don't feel like I have what I need.

  149. Well, the Bible says you have all you need for life and godliness.

  150. Do you believe that?

  151. Right here.

  152. And he said that that's through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.

  153. He's revealed himself.

  154. He's shown himself.

  155. Have you seen Jesus?

  156. Have you seen the Father, he said?

  157. The exact representation of the Father is Jesus.

  158. He's God in bodily form so that we could know him and see him and understand what he is like.

  159. Okay?

  160. Through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,

  161. and then it says in verse 4,

  162. by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises,

  163. so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature.

  164. Wow.

  165. Okay.

  166. Now he's saying you have everything you need,

  167. then I'm going to give you these promises.

  168. I got these promises for you.

  169. It helps you become partakers of the divine nature,

  170. which goes with what Judah was sharing when we took the Lord's table.

  171. I can't do it on my own.

  172. I need to partake of the divine nature,

  173. because my nature is not getting me anywhere.

  174. Right?

  175. So of course I need to partake of the divine nature,

  176. which what does it do?

  177. That is what's caused me to escape from the corruption that's in the world because of sinful desire.

  178. Now in light of all this,

  179. because he says for this very reason,

  180. essentially he's saying,

  181. now that I've laid that all out,

  182. for this very reason,

  183. make every effort to supplement your faith.

  184. Now this is where a lot of times you have the two ditches in Christianity, right?

  185. There's the ditch where it's just like,

  186. oh no,

  187. the Lord has done everything.

  188. I don't need to do anything.

  189. I'm not going to get into your workspace religion.

  190. You know,

  191. it's Christ.

  192. It's all Christ.

  193. It's Christ,

  194. Christ,

  195. Christ,

  196. Christ.

  197. It's Christ church,

  198. man.

  199. That's what we call it.

  200. Right?

  201. But he says in light of all this,

  202. make every effort.

  203. Whoa,

  204. whoa,

  205. whoa.

  206. Effort?

  207. Doesn't depend on man's effort,

  208. but God's mercy.

  209. Don't you know that verse?

  210. Yes,

  211. but take it into,

  212. that's,

  213. that's not the only verse in the Bible though.

  214. There's a lot of other verses like this one.

  215. Okay?

  216. So it's both of us.

  217. The other ditch is that,

  218. oh,

  219. it's all on me.

  220. I don't need,

  221. I just need to do everything.

  222. And I'm constantly feeling anxious.

  223. And I'm constantly like,

  224. I'm not doing enough.

  225. And did I do enough?

  226. Am I pleasing?

  227. And no,

  228. it should be somewhere in the middle where you're saying,

  229. listen,

  230. I can't do anything apart from Christ,

  231. but I have to do things because of Christ.

  232. Okay?

  233. And that's what he's saying.

  234. In light of all this stuff,

  235. for this very reason,

  236. make every effort.

  237. So I would assume that

  238. probably everyone who professes Christ in this room

  239. is making some effort,

  240. but is everyone who professes Christ in this room

  241. making every effort?

  242. It's a good question,

  243. right?

  244. He didn't say,

  245. you know,

  246. give a little effort in this.

  247. A little spit and polish.

  248. Right?

  249. He says,

  250. no,

  251. make every effort.

  252. Make every effort.

  253. To what?

  254. Supplement your faith.

  255. Why does he start with faith?

  256. Because that's where it all starts.

  257. Without faith,

  258. it's impossible to please God,

  259. Hebrews 11,

  260. 6 says.

  261. Okay?

  262. So,

  263. grace comes through faith.

  264. Faith is where it starts.

  265. But he's saying,

  266. you've got to make every effort to supplement.

  267. You guys know what a supplement is.

  268. Many of you take supplements,

  269. right?

  270. We take supplements.

  271. Why?

  272. Because we're not getting what we need in our food,

  273. so we take a supplement to add to it.

  274. Okay?

  275. We're adding to our faith and saying,

  276. okay,

  277. I'm going to supplement it with virtue

  278. and knowledge

  279. and self-control

  280. and steadfastness,

  281. godliness,

  282. brotherly affection,

  283. love,

  284. which all these things,

  285. in essence,

  286. are really saying,

  287. character.

  288. Character.

  289. Make every effort to supplement

  290. your faith

  291. with the character attributes,

  292. with things that are noble things to pursue.

  293. And then,

  294. he gives this,

  295. in verse 8,

  296. it's such a great statement.

  297. This is what I'm talking about

  298. when I'm saying,

  299. you know,

  300. sometimes we overcomplicate church

  301. and our life together

  302. because he says,

  303. if these qualities are yours

  304. and are increasing,

  305. they keep you from being ineffective

  306. or unfruitful

  307. in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  308. We know of people in churches

  309. who are ineffective

  310. or unfruitful

  311. in their knowledge of Jesus Christ.

  312. Some of us are saying,

  313. yeah,

  314. that's me.

  315. Not just that I know someone,

  316. that's me a lot of times.

  317. I feel ineffective,

  318. unfruitful.

  319. And you might say,

  320. well,

  321. what do I do about that?

  322. It lays it right out here.

  323. If these qualities,

  324. these character qualities,

  325. are yours

  326. and are increasing,

  327. they keep you from being ineffective

  328. or unfruitful

  329. in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  330. Okay?

  331. How do you,

  332. how are you kept

  333. from being ineffective

  334. or unfruitful?

  335. Have these things

  336. in increasing measure.

  337. keep going.

  338. Keep going.

  339. He endures to the end

  340. we'll be saved.

  341. Matthew 24, 13, right?

  342. You don't just start.

  343. It's not just about starting.

  344. You got to persevere.

  345. You got to keep increasing.

  346. You got to keep pursuing.

  347. Say,

  348. God,

  349. I want you more

  350. than the things of this world.

  351. I don't just start with you

  352. and then I just

  353. live this selfish,

  354. comfortable life

  355. and expect that that's Christianity.

  356. No, no, no, no, no, no.

  357. I possess these qualities

  358. in increasing measure.

  359. I'm making every effort

  360. to supplement my faith

  361. with these things.

  362. This is a focus of my life.

  363. We put a lot of effort

  364. into a lot of things

  365. but do we put a lot of effort

  366. and maybe even go even further

  367. to say every effort

  368. into supplementing our faith

  369. with the character qualities

  370. that God wants?

  371. And again,

  372. please hear me.

  373. I'm not saying

  374. you just muster it up,

  375. pull yourself up

  376. by your own bootstraps

  377. and get it together, man.

  378. I'm saying

  379. you realize

  380. you don't have it together.

  381. You'll never have it together

  382. on your own.

  383. You trust

  384. with everything within you,

  385. God's power

  386. working within you.

  387. You partake

  388. of the divine nature

  389. and then you give

  390. everything you got

  391. towards it

  392. in light of it.

  393. Right?

  394. And you make every effort.

  395. This keeps us

  396. from being ineffective

  397. or unfruitful.

  398. Everybody hates

  399. when they're ineffective.

  400. Everybody hates

  401. when they're unfruitful.

  402. What are you doing about it?

  403. Sometimes we complain about it.

  404. Sometimes we whine about it.

  405. Sometimes we're bummed about it.

  406. Sometimes we're even

  407. depressed about it.

  408. Sometimes that's all

  409. we can think about

  410. is how ineffective

  411. and unfruitful we are.

  412. Or we could do

  413. something about it.

  414. Bible lays it

  415. really straightforward,

  416. pretty clear.

  417. Right?

  418. I mean,

  419. am I missing something here?

  420. It seems really

  421. straightforward right here.

  422. Right?

  423. It says,

  424. if you,

  425. if you,

  426. these qualities are yours

  427. and are increasing,

  428. they keep you

  429. from being ineffective

  430. or unfruitful

  431. in the knowledge

  432. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  433. I'm looking at that.

  434. I'm saying,

  435. this is good info.

  436. this is important stuff

  437. right here.

  438. I don't want to be ineffective.

  439. I don't want to be unfruitful.

  440. And so if you have an area

  441. where you are

  442. ineffective or unfruitful,

  443. ask the question,

  444. is it because

  445. I've grown complacent?

  446. That I've just,

  447. I've let

  448. a specific area

  449. of my life

  450. not be increasing

  451. in the virtue

  452. of

  453. Christ,

  454. the character of Christ.

  455. I'm just

  456. going through the motions.

  457. And this is the great reminder

  458. is verse 9.

  459. Forever lacks these qualities

  460. is so nearsighted

  461. that he's blind.

  462. Why?

  463. Because he's forgotten

  464. that he's been cleansed

  465. from his past sins.

  466. That's why we take

  467. the Lord's table every week.

  468. Why?

  469. So we don't forget

  470. that we've been cleansed

  471. from our past sins.

  472. Because when you forget

  473. that you've been

  474. cleansed from your past sins,

  475. you're nearsighted and blind.

  476. And when you're nearsighted

  477. and blind,

  478. you stop

  479. increasing.

  480. increasing.

  481. And when you stop

  482. increasing,

  483. you're ineffective

  484. and unfruitful.

  485. When you remember

  486. who Jesus is

  487. and what he's done for you.

  488. When you remember

  489. the gospel,

  490. glad tidings of great joy

  491. that we just talked about

  492. this Christmas season.

  493. You remember

  494. the good news

  495. of the gospel

  496. of Jesus Christ.

  497. That there's nothing

  498. in you that's good.

  499. That everything,

  500. that all the things

  501. you do

  502. are for your own glory

  503. and fall short

  504. of the glory of God.

  505. No matter how much

  506. you attempt,

  507. you can never be good enough.

  508. It's never,

  509. ever,

  510. ever,

  511. ever,

  512. ever,

  513. ever,

  514. ever,

  515. ever enough

  516. so Jesus came,

  517. paid the price,

  518. lived the perfect life,

  519. was the perfect sacrifice

  520. so that in trusting

  521. in his atoning sacrifice

  522. and his resurrection

  523. from the dead,

  524. we could be made new

  525. and Jesus Christ

  526. could live inside of us,

  527. live through us,

  528. and we could be saved.

  529. We could be saved.

  530. We could be saved

  531. from the penalty of sin.

  532. We could be saved

  533. from the power of sin

  534. and we trust

  535. and get excited

  536. about being saved

  537. from the presence of sin

  538. when he returns.

  539. We trust these things.

  540. Have you forgotten

  541. these things?

  542. If you're not increasing

  543. or you've forgotten

  544. the good news

  545. of the gospel

  546. of Jesus Christ,

  547. these things

  548. will cause you

  549. to become blind,

  550. ineffective,

  551. and unfruitful

  552. in your knowledge

  553. of Jesus Christ.

  554. Isn't it interesting

  555. that it says

  556. in the knowledge

  557. of Jesus Christ

  558. because most people

  559. would say,

  560. oh,

  561. if I have the knowledge

  562. of Jesus Christ,

  563. I'm good.

  564. Uh-uh.

  565. Not according

  566. to this verse.

  567. Do you see how it says

  568. this will keep you

  569. from being,

  570. it doesn't just say

  571. they keep you

  572. from being ineffective

  573. or unfruitful,

  574. period.

  575. It says they will

  576. keep you from being

  577. ineffective or unfruitful

  578. in the knowledge

  579. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  580. Have you thought

  581. that you can have

  582. knowledge of Jesus Christ,

  583. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  584. and still be ineffective

  585. and unfruitful?

  586. Don't just be comfortable

  587. because you say,

  588. oh,

  589. I've known Jesus

  590. for a long time.

  591. I've been saved

  592. since I was a kid.

  593. I've been professing

  594. Christians for a long time.

  595. You can have knowledge

  596. of Jesus Christ

  597. for a very long time

  598. and still be ineffective

  599. and unfruitful.

  600. That's clearly

  601. what it's saying here.

  602. But we don't want that.

  603. I don't want that.

  604. Do you want that?

  605. We didn't,

  606. we didn't start this church

  607. so we could just coast.

  608. We wanted to,

  609. we didn't want to be

  610. ineffective or unfruitful.

  611. We want to see fruit.

  612. We want to see fruit.

  613. Well,

  614. then we got to do it

  615. God's way.

  616. That's why he says,

  617. therefore,

  618. verse 10,

  619. therefore,

  620. okay,

  621. after laying all this out,

  622. he lays out the reasons,

  623. says make every effort.

  624. These will keep you

  625. from being ineffective

  626. and unproductive

  627. in your knowledge

  628. of the Lord Jesus.

  629. It makes sure

  630. that you're not

  631. so nearsighted

  632. that you're blind

  633. and forgot that you

  634. can cleanse from

  635. your past sins.

  636. He goes through all that

  637. and then he says,

  638. therefore,

  639. so because all that's there,

  640. now be all the more

  641. diligent

  642. to confirm your calling

  643. and election.

  644. For if you practice

  645. these qualities,

  646. you will never fall.

  647. Whoa!

  648. Another great promise.

  649. You'll never fall.

  650. How often do we

  651. confess falling

  652. or we're afraid

  653. of falling

  654. or we think,

  655. oh,

  656. I'm just afraid

  657. I'm going to fall

  658. into sin.

  659. Here's the way.

  660. Be all the more diligent

  661. to confirm your calling

  662. and election.

  663. If you practice

  664. these qualities,

  665. you will never fail.

  666. You never fall.

  667. Okay?

  668. Continuing to increase.

  669. Trusting God

  670. to do it.

  671. Pressing in.

  672. Being diligent.

  673. Making every effort.

  674. This is the language

  675. that Peter uses.

  676. That's great stuff.

  677. Okay?

  678. So where are you at

  679. with that?

  680. Where are you at

  681. with your relationship

  682. to this concept

  683. of character?

  684. Character.

  685. What is your attitude

  686. towards the development

  687. of character

  688. not in your friend,

  689. not in your spouse,

  690. not in your kids,

  691. although that's

  692. all important?

  693. Me.

  694. Where am I at

  695. with pursuing character

  696. in me?

  697. Not just being consumed

  698. with everybody else

  699. and all their problems.

  700. My problems.

  701. Galatians 2.14

  702. says,

  703. when I,

  704. this is

  705. Paul talking

  706. about Peter,

  707. he said,

  708. when I saw

  709. that their conduct

  710. was not in step

  711. with the truth

  712. of the gospel,

  713. I said to Cephas,

  714. he saw

  715. that their conduct

  716. wasn't in step

  717. with the gospel.

  718. This is just like

  719. what Peter's saying.

  720. He said,

  721. you've forgotten

  722. that you've been

  723. cleansed from your past sin.

  724. Paul saw that Peter

  725. was living that way

  726. and he confronted him.

  727. He said,

  728. I saw that your conduct

  729. wasn't in step

  730. with the gospel.

  731. James 3.13

  732. asks the question,

  733. who is wise

  734. and understanding

  735. among you?

  736. Then he says,

  737. by his good conduct

  738. let him show his works

  739. in the meekness of wisdom.

  740. And they say,

  741. well,

  742. are you wise?

  743. Do you have understanding?

  744. Prove it.

  745. By what?

  746. Your character.

  747. Your good conduct.

  748. It always shows.

  749. It always shows.

  750. 1 Thessalonians 2.9-12

  751. For you remember,

  752. brothers,

  753. our labor and toil.

  754. We work night and day

  755. that we might not be

  756. a burden to any of you.

  757. While we proclaim to you

  758. the gospel of God,

  759. you are witnesses

  760. and God also,

  761. how holy and righteous

  762. and blameless was

  763. our conduct towards you believers.

  764. For you know how

  765. like a father with his children

  766. we exhorted each one of you

  767. and encouraged you

  768. and charged you

  769. to walk in a manner

  770. worthy of God

  771. who calls you

  772. into his own kingdom

  773. and glory.

  774. Okay?

  775. You are witnesses

  776. how holy and righteous

  777. and blameless

  778. was our conduct.

  779. How is your conduct?

  780. How is your character?

  781. How is it when people

  782. are looking?

  783. How is it when people

  784. are not looking?

  785. Someone once said

  786. your character is who you are

  787. when nobody is looking.

  788. We love doing things

  789. to be praised by people,

  790. to be thought well of by people.

  791. Everybody wants to be

  792. thought well of by people.

  793. But what's most important,

  794. what will be most motivating

  795. is when you want to be

  796. thought well of by God,

  797. when you want to please Him.

  798. God, I want my behavior,

  799. my character,

  800. my conduct to please You.

  801. I want to live in a manner

  802. worthy of the gospel,

  803. the good news,

  804. the free gift of eternal life

  805. that You gave me.

  806. I want to live in a manner

  807. worthy of that.

  808. And Paul's saying,

  809. you're our witnesses

  810. and God also,

  811. how holy and righteous

  812. and blameless was our conduct.

  813. How holy and righteous

  814. and blameless is your conduct?

  815. How holy and righteous

  816. is it not just on a Sunday morning

  817. or some gathering

  818. during the night of the week?

  819. How holy and righteous

  820. is your conduct

  821. when nobody's looking?

  822. 1 Peter 1, 15-16.

  823. He says,

  824. But as He who called you

  825. is holy,

  826. you also be holy

  827. in all your conduct,

  828. since it is written,

  829. You shall be holy,

  830. for I am holy.

  831. 1 Peter 2, 12 says,

  832. Keep your conduct

  833. among the Gentiles honorable,

  834. so that when they speak

  835. against you as evildoers,

  836. they may see your good deeds

  837. and glorify God

  838. on the day of visitation.

  839. And 1 Peter 3, 1-2 says,

  840. Wives, be subject

  841. to your own husbands,

  842. so that even if some

  843. do not obey the word,

  844. they may be won

  845. without a word by what?

  846. The conduct of their wives.

  847. When they see your respectful

  848. and pure conduct.

  849. Okay?

  850. Again, same principle.

  851. Conduct, character

  852. is very powerful.

  853. Very powerful.

  854. So if we think of conduct

  855. for us as a church,

  856. I want to look at 14 specifics

  857. for us as a church.

  858. These are 14 things,

  859. I think,

  860. knowing the different people

  861. in the church,

  862. these are 14 things,

  863. I think we should be asking the Lord,

  864. are these things,

  865. character issues,

  866. that we could increase in,

  867. be diligent in.

  868. Okay?

  869. Don't worry,

  870. I'm not going to spend

  871. a ton of time on each,

  872. but first one.

  873. Number one,

  874. being self-controlled.

  875. Being self-controlled.

  876. There's so many verses

  877. on self-control.

  878. Proverbs 25, 28 says,

  879. A man without self-control

  880. is like a city broken into

  881. and left without walls.

  882. If you plant a church

  883. or you have a church

  884. and the people in that church

  885. are not self-controlled,

  886. it's not going to be

  887. a healthy church.

  888. Okay?

  889. It's like a city broken into

  890. without walls.

  891. It's not going to stand.

  892. It's going to fall.

  893. It's going to fall.

  894. Again, it goes back

  895. to what I was saying

  896. in the beginning.

  897. It's like,

  898. how do you have

  899. a healthy church?

  900. It's not rocket science.

  901. It's not super complicated.

  902. You build his way,

  903. he'll grow it his way.

  904. You build his way,

  905. he'll breathe life

  906. into it his way.

  907. That's what he does.

  908. He loves to do that.

  909. He's not apprehensive

  910. about that.

  911. But we got to get down

  912. to the nitty gritty

  913. and say,

  914. are we self-controlled?

  915. Are we steady?

  916. Are we erratic

  917. and prone to extremes?

  918. Up and down constantly?

  919. Are we saying,

  920. no, I'm self-controlled.

  921. My emotions are controlled.

  922. My self is controlled.

  923. I'm controlled.

  924. I'm not,

  925. I'm like a person,

  926. like a city broken into

  927. and left without walls.

  928. I have self-control.

  929. It's a fruit of the spirit.

  930. So as I deny myself

  931. and live towards the spirit,

  932. the self-control

  933. will become more and more

  934. evident in my life.

  935. But is there specific areas

  936. where you're not self-controlled in

  937. that you're just kind of

  938. letting go

  939. and just become

  940. something you've been

  941. comfortable with?

  942. Sometimes what happens

  943. is we become comfortable

  944. with character,

  945. with bad character.

  946. Like little things.

  947. We just become comfortable

  948. with them.

  949. We just say,

  950. well,

  951. this is just my thing.

  952. We've to God

  953. that he would,

  954. that he would make us holy

  955. and he would set us apart

  956. and he would put his finger

  957. on those things

  958. that all of us,

  959. every single one of us,

  960. that he would put his finger

  961. on those things

  962. and say,

  963. I want to purify my church.

  964. I want my church to be holy.

  965. I don't want them to

  966. have any area

  967. where they're not self-controlled.

  968. I want them to be self-controlled.

  969. Number two,

  970. commitment

  971. or being committed,

  972. right?

  973. Not flaky.

  974. Psalm 15,

    Psalms 15:4

  975. verse 4

  976. in the CSB says,

  977. who may ascend

  978. the hill of the Lord?

  979. He who keeps his word

  980. whatever the cost.

  981. He who keeps his word

  982. whatever the cost.

  983. Are you someone,

  984. character-wise,

  985. who can be counted on?

  986. Are you someone

  987. who keeps his word

  988. no matter what the cost?

  989. Okay?

  990. This means

  991. you don't keep your word

  992. unless something else

  993. becomes more enjoyable,

  994. including sleep,

  995. including other relationships,

  996. including other things

  997. you'd rather do.

  998. Okay?

  999. Let's be honest.

  1000. That's the stuff

  1001. that keeps us

  1002. from keeping our word.

  1003. Something we'd like

  1004. to do better.

  1005. Right?

  1006. It's typically

  1007. not some horrible thing.

  1008. It's just something

1009. that we would rather do.

  1010. And so,

  1011. we flake out.

1012. We don't keep our commitment.

1013. We can't be counted on.

  1014. We can't truly be a partner

1015. who can be counted on

  1016. because the commitment

  1017. we weighed,

  1018. well,

  1019. there's something else

  1020. more important to me.

  1021. And sometimes,

  1022. it's just as simple

  1023. as sleep.

  1024. Sometimes,

  1025. it's just as simple

  1026. as my own laziness.

  1027. Just say,

  1028. no,

  1029. I want

  1030. to be counted on.

  1031. I want to be

  1032. a committed person.

1033. I want to have that

  1034. as a character attribute.

  1035. I want to be

  1036. the kind of guy

  1037. who truly can ascend

1038. the hill of the Lord

1039. because I keep my word

  1040. even when it hurts.

  1041. Okay?

  1042. I keep my word

  1043. whatever the cost.

  1044. Right?

  1045. Are you someone

1046. who keeps his word that way?

  1047. Are you someone

1048. who can be counted on?

  1049. Sometimes,

  1050. we end up developing

  1051. a reputation

  1052. for being counted on

  1053. to be flaky.

  1054. That's not the kind

  1055. of counted on

  1056. you want to be.

  1057. All right?

  1058. Don't be counted on

  1059. to be flaky.

  1060. Don't be counted on

  1061. to be late.

  1062. Don't be counted on

1063. to not be counted on.

  1064. Don't be counted on

  1065. to be a person

1066. who doesn't keep their word.

  1067. Don't be counted on

  1068. to be a person

  1069. who doesn't do

  1070. what they say

  1071. they're going to do.

  1072. Be counted,

  1073. be a person

1074. who can be counted on

1075. to do what you said

1076. you were going to do.

1077. You can be counted on

  1078. to do what God

  1079. wants them to do.

  1080. Be a committed person.

  1081. Okay?

  1082. That's a character

  1083. attribute that,

  1084. again,

1085. if you have a church

  1086. that isn't committed,

1087. that can't be counted on,

  1088. this is why

1089. we call our membership partnership. This is why we even have that as a part of our church. Why?

1090. Because how in the world? I mean, I've had people over the years, they've criticized the concept of

1091. membership or partnership. And I'm always like, hey, I'm all ears. I would love to hear how you

1092. would attempt to do church without the basis of people who are committed. Tell me. I'd love to

1093. hear. I've yet to hear a good answer to that question. And I've yet to be in one quote-unquote

1094. healthy church that has ever been filled with a group of people who are not committed. It can't

1095. be counted on. I don't know that one exists. I don't know how it could. There's a reason God

1096. calls us to keep our word, even when it hurts, even when it costs. Number three, good stewardship.

1097. Good stewardship. 1 Corinthians 4 verse 2 says, it is required of stewards that they be found

    1 Corinthians 4:2

1098. faithful. That they be found faithful. All of us have been given gifts, stuff, things,

1099. things, and all these things. Every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of the heavenly

1100. lights, James 1 17. Okay. 1 Peter says, each person should use whatever gift they've received

1101. to serve the Lord. Okay. Stewardship. What are you doing with the gift you've been given? Are you using

1102. it? Do you know that you have gifts, but you just know that it would be a lot of work to use your

1103. gifts so you don't use them? What about the way you steward your finances? What about the way you

1104. steward your time? What are the way you steward just the talents that God's given you? Some of you

1105. are very talented in specific areas. Are you being a steward? Are you being faithful to the Lord?

1106. Again, imagine, I mean, just looking around this room, there's not a lot of people in this room.

1107. It's a very small group of people. A lot of very gifted people. A lot of very talented people.

1108. A lot of resources here. A lot of awesome things in this one room. Again, it doesn't matter if you

1109. have a room full of talent and giftings if there's not stewardship. You don't get a healthy church by

1110. just getting a bunch of talented, gifted people because what you build with your gift, you'll

1111. destroy with your character. You don't build with giftings. You build with character. You build with

1112. character. Okay? And character stewards giftings. But don't be impressed with giftings.

1113. We could go down a whole list of people who seemed very impressive with their giftings,

1114. even in recent celebrity Christianity. Okay?

1115. It looked like, wow, that person's really gifted. How impressive is their gift?

1116. Not very impressive when they don't have character.

1117. When you have Bible teachers who are known for their Bible teaching and speak all over the country

1118. because of their Bible teaching, you find out they had a secret life of adultery.

1119. You think, isn't their gift impressive? No, I'm not impressed.

1120. You think their family's impressed that dad's sleeping with somebody else and found a younger,

1121. better model because mom was older?

1122. I mean, that's the kind of stuff that happens. This is why character matters.

1123. You don't build church on gifting. God gives tons of gifting. Okay?

1124. Where's the character? Where's the character that can carry gifting?

1125. When you combine those two together with stewardship, it's an amazingly powerful thing.

1126. When you have gifts combined with character, stewarding the gifts that you've been given

1127. by having character, undergirding them, foundationally established below them,

1128. now you have a healthy church. You have a healthy church.

1129. Number four, being unafraid or not being anxious.

1130. Okay? Philippians 4 verse 6 says, don't be anxious about anything.

    Philippians 4:6

1131. Don't be anxious about anything. Well, come on. Surely I could be anxious about some things.

1132. No, don't be anxious about anything.

1133. But in everything, by prayer and petition, offer your request to God.

  1134. Okay?

1135. Anxiety is so rampant and so accepted and so medicated nowadays,

1136. it's become totally acceptable behavior that even in the church people think nothing of it.

1137. And we've turned what the Bible calls a sin into just an acceptable form of our everyday life.

1138. When the opposite of anxiety is trusting in God.

  1139. Right?

1140. And so when we have an anxious culture, people are anxious about all kinds of things,

1141. there's no health to that church.

1142. When we lack the character of trusting in our God and are filled with anxiety,

1143. don't be anxious about anything.

1144. But offer your request to God. Why? Because God can be trusted.

1145. Because God can be trusted. Do you know that? Do you believe that?

1146. Which brings me to the fifth one. Be trusting and not controlling.

1147. Psalm 37 verse 5 says, commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him, and He will act.

    Psalms 37:5

1148. See, what happens is if we become anxious and we're not trusting in the Lord,

1149. we end up thinking that it's on us.

1150. And we have to control our circumstances. We have to control our situations.

1151. If I see, oh, that, if I start to worry about my finances, then I gotta control.

1152. If I start to worry about my spouse and how they're acting, I gotta control.

1153. If I start to worry about my kids and what's gonna happen to them, I have to control.

1154. If I start worrying about my church, then I have to control.

1155. No, no. If you know that God's in control, that He is kind and good and sovereign and loving and faithful,

1156. and we could go on with a million other things He is,

1157. if you know that, then you trust.

1158. But you trust to the degree, a friend of Manning once said,

1159. you trust to the degree that you know that you're loved.

1160. When you have the character of trusting in God,

  1161. you're unshakable, you're unmovable.

1162. You're only as strong as what you put your hope and your trust in.

1163. If you put your trust in something that can be taken away from you,

1164. if you put your trust in something that can be shaken, then you will be shaken.

1165. If you put your trust in the one who is unshakable,

1166. the unshakable King who gives us an unshakable kingdom,

1167. and you build your house on the rock,

1168. then when storms rage and the wind blows,

1169. your house and this house, this church, will stand.

1170. What is this church built on?

1171. Is it built on anxiety, control, fear?

1172. Or is it built on trust in God,

1173. who makes all things grow for His glory?

  1174. Number six.

1175. This is a different one, but I think it's an important one.

  1176. Holistic.

  1177. Okay?

1178. What do I mean by this?

  1179. Well, Matthew 7, 18 says,

1180. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit,

1181. nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

  1182. Okay?

1183. So what I mean by this is,

1184. you ever see a person where it seems like they have a,

1185. you look at their life and you say,

1186. wow, tons of fruit in this area,

1187. and a bunch of bad fruit in this area?

1188. I always ask the question,

1189. is the good fruit as good as it seems to be?

  1190. Because the Bible says,

1191. a healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit,

1192. nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

1193. And we've almost kind of normalized

  1194. this unholistic, uneven behavior

1195. and think, oh, this is a good thing.

  1196. No.

1197. When you see that, that's a sign.

1198. That's a sign for you to say, be concerned.

1199. The fact that there is so much lack of consistency

1200. in their life is telling you that maybe the good

1201. isn't as good as it seems to be.

1202. Because wisdom is always proved true by her actions.

  1203. Right?

1204. We just read that before about how,

1205. who is wise and understanding among you?

1206. By his good conduct, let him show.

1207. And so it seems like,

1208. wow, this person has a lot of wisdom,

1209. but man, they have a lot of bad conduct.

  1210. You might say,

1211. maybe they don't have a lot of wisdom.

1212. And I've seen over and over again,

1213. this scriptural truth proved true multiple times,

1214. where it seems like, wow,

1215. there's over the top development in this particular area,

1216. but severe underdevelopment in the other area.

1217. It makes you wonder how overdeveloped

1218. they actually are in that area.

1219. Oftentimes you'll see this with someone

1220. who knows the Bible extremely well.

1221. It seems like they can teach

1222. and know everything about the Bible,

1223. and yet they have no self-control in their life.

  1224. And they'd say,

1225. how in the world can they know the Bible so well

1226. and have no self-control in their life?

  1227. I would say,

1228. well, maybe they know the Bible,

1229. but they probably don't know God.

1230. They know the words of God,

1231. but they don't know God himself.

1232. They search the scriptures looking to find life,

1233. but they don't come to Jesus to have life,

1234. just like the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  1235. Okay?

1236. So we need to have,

1237. when there is a holistic approach to character,

1238. because basically what it is,

  1239. is what essentially happens

1240. and what it usually is

  1241. when you see this,

1242. a bunch of good fruit

1243. and a bunch of really bad fruit

  1244. in the same person,

1245. that means what you're seeing is,

1246. is ornaments on a dead tree.

  1247. It's like a Christmas tree, right?

  1248. It's like,

1249. it's dressed up by the person.

1250. It's not the natural fruit of the tree.

  1251. Okay?

1252. It'd be like you have a dead tree

  1253. out in your yard,

  1254. a dead apple tree,

1255. and you start hanging alive apples on your tree.

  1256. You know, it's like,

1257. wow, it looks like a really good apple tree.

  1258. It doesn't have leaves,

1259. but it has a lot of apples on it.

  1260. It's really weird.

  1261. A lot of apples,

  1262. but no leaves.

  1263. Surely it's good, right?

1264. It's got a lot of apples on there.

  1265. No, there's no leaves.

  1266. That's probably because somebody

  1267. attached to those apples.

  1268. In the same way,

1269. when you see a life that's not holistic,

  1270. that's not consistent,

  1271. typically what that is,

1272. is evidence of self-made religion.

  1273. It's propping yourself up.

  1274. It's building yourself up

1275. and presenting your own kind of

1276. good or religious version of yourself

1277. rather than yielding to the power of the Spirit

1278. to birth and transform you

1279. into the character and nature of Christ.

  1280. Okay?

  1281. Number seven, being teachable.

1282. One of my favorite direct verses,

  1283. I love direct verses,

1284. is Proverbs 12, verse one.

1285. He who hates reproof is stupid.

  1286. Right?

1287. You don't get any more direct than that, right?

1288. He who hates reproof or hates correction

  1289. is stupid.

  1290. Don't be stupid.

  1291. You know?

  1292. You might say,

1293. man, I don't know how you have

  1294. a good, healthy church.

  1295. Well, you hate reproof,

1296. you'll have a pretty stupid church, right?

  1297. People who are corrected

  1298. but just don't listen.

1299. People who have heard the truth

1300. and just don't obey it.

1301. People who hear the Word

  1302. and forget,

  1303. you know,

  1304. it's like looking in a mirror

1305. and forgetting what you look like.

  1306. James 1, 22 says,

  1307. you know,

1308. don't be hearers of the Word only,

  1309. but be doers.

  1310. Okay?

  1311. Be teachable.

1312. Someone brings something to you

1313. and there's multiple people saying,

1314. hey, I think this is something

1315. you need to work on.

1316. We need to work on those things.

1317. We need to work on those things.

1318. We need to supplement our faith

  1319. with whatever character attribute

1320. they're saying I need to work on.

1321. We need to be teachable.

  1322. Number eight,

  1323. selfless.

  1324. Luke 9, 23 says,

  1325. he said to all,

1326. if anyone would come after me,

  1327. let him deny himself

1328. and take up his cross daily

  1329. and follow me.

1330. Like, how do I have a healthy church?

1331. Well, let's flip it around.

1332. How do you have a really unhealthy church?

1333. Have a bunch of selfish people.

1334. Have a bunch of people

  1335. not denying themselves.

1336. Like, we could do a little experiment

  1337. and figure out

1338. what would Christ's church look like

1339. after the end of this year

1340. if we all just gave in to ourself.

1341. Would anybody want to be a part of this church?

  1342. Any of us.

1343. Do you have to think about that

  1344. for a long time

  1345. to answer that question?

  1346. Why?

1347. Because it's essential to be selfless.

1348. Do you see what I'm saying?

1349. I'm saying that so often

  1350. we complicate things

  1351. that are so simple

1352. and what is really just missing

  1353. from a healthy church's character.

  1354. is character.

1355. It's us making every effort

  1356. to just say

  1357. things like selflessness.

  1358. It's like what

1359. Seth was just talking about

  1360. with the kids.

  1361. Like, imagine how transformed

1362. all of our kids would be

1363. if they just had this one attribute

1364. that they were really making effort in.

  1365. Being selfless.

  1366. Like, Seth was saying,

  1367. how many times

1368. is there strife and fights

  1369. and crying and whining

  1370. and all this

  1371. because of one thing?

  1372. I want what I want now

  1373. and I don't care

  1374. what anybody else wants.

1375. I'm not going to look

1376. to other people's needs first.

  1377. I'm looking to me,

  1378. old me, number one.

  1379. Right?

1380. It's the same in the church

  1381. with adults, right?

  1382. Number nine, gentle.

  1383. Philippians 4 verse 5

    Philippians 4:5

  1384. in the NIV says,

  1385. let your gentleness

  1386. be evident to all.

  1387. Let your gentleness

  1388. be evident to all.

  1389. Okay?

  1390. I have offended,

  1391. hurt,

  1392. and sinned against people

1393. multiple times in my life

  1394. because I wasn't gentle.

  1395. All right?

  1396. That's a bad character

  1397. attribute of myself.

  1398. That's an area

1399. where I have to make

  1400. a stronger effort

  1401. to be gentle.

  1402. Okay?

  1403. That doesn't mean

  1404. I can't be strong.

  1405. It doesn't mean

  1406. I can't be forceful

  1407. and convicted.

1408. But like someone once said,

  1409. it's like being

  1410. a velvet brick.

  1411. Okay?

  1412. There should be

  1413. gentleness with it.

  1414. And you should let

  1415. your gentleness

  1416. be evident to all.

  1417. If your gentleness

1418. is only evident to you,

1419. it might be a problem there.

  1420. Okay?

  1421. But again,

1422. if you have a church

  1423. that's not gentle,

1424. you think a lot of new people

1425. are going to be like,

1426. I really like this church.

  1427. They're really harsh.

  1428. No.

  1429. They're very gentle.

  1430. They spoke hard truths

  1431. in a gentle way.

  1432. Number 10,

  1433. mature.

  1434. Hebrews 6.1 says,

  1435. let us leave

  1436. the elementary doctrine

  1437. of Christ

  1438. and go on to

  1439. maturities.

  1440. Okay?

  1441. Immaturity

  1442. is

  1443. a lacking

  1444. in character

  1445. that causes

  1446. all sorts of problems

  1447. and the root

  1448. of all kinds

  1449. of problems.

  1450. Maturity

  1451. is knowing when.

  1452. Maturity

  1453. is having

  1454. the wherewithal

  1455. to know

  1456. what is appropriate

  1457. for that particular

  1458. time and place.

  1459. Right?

  1460. It usually comes

  1461. through experience.

  1462. It usually comes

  1463. through knowledge

  1464. of what God wants

  1465. and the truth.

  1466. But maturity

  1467. is huge.

  1468. And again,

  1469. you might look

  1470. at different churches

  1471. and you might say,

  1472. wow,

  1473. that church

  1474. is really unhealthy.

  1475. How many churches

  1476. do you say

  1477. that church

  1478. is really unhealthy

  1479. because they lack

  1480. maturity?

  1481. Probably a lot.

  1482. If we're mature

  1483. and the way we,

  1484. if we,

  1485. if we make

  1486. every effort

  1487. to add to

  1488. our faith

  1489. maturity,

  1490. that's going to

  1491. make a big difference.

  1492. Number 11,

  1493. sexual purity.

  1494. Ephesians 5.3

  1495. in the NIV

  1496. says,

  1497. among you,

  1498. there must not

  1499. even be a hint

  1500. of sexual morality

  1501. or of any kind

  1502. of impurity

  1503. or of greed

  1504. because these

  1505. are improper

  1506. for God's

  1507. holy people.

  1508. Again,

  1509. you're thinking

  1510. about a church,

  1511. you're thinking

  1512. about how do we

  1513. build a healthy

  1514. church together?

  1515. If I'm going

  1516. to build a healthy

  1517. church together,

  1518. I can't give myself

  1519. to that which is

  1520. improper for God's

  1521. holy people

  1522. because the church

  1523. is made up

  1524. of God's holy people.

1525. And if it's made up

  1526. of God's holy people,

  1527. then a healthy church

1528. would not be made up

  1529. of people who are

  1530. doing that which is

  1531. improper for God's

  1532. holy people.

  1533. And God says

  1534. that what is improper

  1535. for God's holy people

1536. is to even have a hint.

  1537. It's to even have a hint.

  1538. Have you ever had

  1539. the beverage

  1540. that's called hint

  1541. where it just has

  1542. a hint of a,

  1543. it tastes like water.

  1544. You barely have

  1545. anything in it.

  1546. It's like,

  1547. well,

  1548. this is raspberry.

  1549. Is it though?

  1550. I mean,

  1551. it's basically water.

  1552. Okay?

  1553. That's the whole point.

  1554. It's a hint.

  1555. It's just a little hint.

1556. A hint is not much.

  1557. He's saying,

  1558. among you,

  1559. there must not be

  1560. even a hint

  1561. of sexual immorality.

  1562. So he's not saying,

  1563. you know,

  1564. well,

1565. you can have a little bit.

  1566. He's saying,

  1567. not even a hint.

1568. Not even a little bit.

  1569. It's not an option.

  1570. Christians in a church

  1571. who say sexual immorality

  1572. is not an option.

  1573. It's not an option.

  1574. The problem is,

  1575. a lot of times,

  1576. Christians actually believe

  1577. it's an option.

  1578. You might say,

  1579. well,

  1580. yeah,

1581. but that's just the way

  1582. people are.

  1583. It's like,

  1584. well,

  1585. no,

  1586. because there's certain things

  1587. that every single person

1588. thinks are not an option.

1589. I would assume most of you

1590. think murder is not an option,

  1591. right?

  1592. Like,

  1593. it's not something

  1594. you're entertaining

  1595. about committing.

  1596. You're probably not plotting

1597. to kill anybody right now.

1598. And if you ever even thought

1599. about it at one point in time,

  1600. you quickly just said,

  1601. no,

  1602. that's not an option,

  1603. right?

  1604. Okay?

  1605. It's not an option.

1606. We have things like that.

  1607. Rape is typically something

  1608. you think,

  1609. no,

  1610. not an option,

  1611. right?

1612. There's all kinds of sins

  1613. like that.

  1614. Well,

  1615. what if we said

1616. all kinds of sexual immorality

  1617. are not an option?

  1618. Looking at pornography,

  1619. not an option.

  1620. It's just not,

  1621. it's not,

  1622. I can't do it.

  1623. Now,

  1624. you can't,

  1625. like,

  1626. avoid seeing images

  1627. in this world

  1628. because they're everywhere.

  1629. But,

1630. you can have the character

  1631. that says,

  1632. no,

  1633. no,

  1634. not an option.

  1635. I'm not going there.

  1636. Yes,

  1637. very attractive person,

  1638. moving on.

1639. And it's important to know

  1640. that being attracted

  1641. is not a sin,

  1642. okay?

  1643. Finding a woman attractive,

  1644. finding a man attractive,

  1645. that's not sin.

1646. That was actually a gift

1647. given by God to you,

  1648. okay?

  1649. Some people

  1650. are so defeated

  1651. by their attraction

1652. that they give in to sin

  1653. because the devil

  1654. has defeated them

  1655. by lying to them

  1656. about attraction,

  1657. being attracted to

  1658. an attractive person

  1659. being sinned.

  1660. No,

  1661. you can notice

  1662. that someone's attraction,

1663. don't lust over the person.

  1664. Oh,

  1665. that person's really attractive.

1666. That person has a really

  1667. attractive body.

  1668. Not going to lust.

  1669. Moving on.

  1670. Not even a hint.

  1671. Not even a hint.

1672. That's the kind of character.

  1673. Sexual morality

1674. is one of the number one things

  1675. in the Old Testament,

1676. spoken of in the New Testament,

1677. and in our modern day culture.

  1678. How many leaders,

  1679. how many prominent people

  1680. in the church,

  1681. outside of the church,

  1682. in business,

  1683. in politics,

  1684. how many people

  1685. have been taken up

  1686. by this one sin

  1687. of sexual morality?

  1688. Character matters.

  1689. Character matters.

  1690. Three more.

  1691. Number 12.

  1692. Kind of four,

1693. because this is like a double.

  1694. Marriage and parenting.

  1695. Okay?

  1696. Marriage and parenting.

  1697. 1 Timothy 3, 4-5,

  1698. I'm talking about

  1699. the qualifications

  1700. of an elder,

  1701. says,

  1702. he must manage

  1703. his own household well,

  1704. with all dignity,

  1705. keeping his children submissive.

1706. For if someone does not know

  1707. how to manage

  1708. his own household,

  1709. how will he care

  1710. for God's church?

  1711. Okay?

1712. I really could have just said

  1713. this is household management,

  1714. would have been maybe

1715. a better way to word it.

  1716. That includes

  1717. if you're single,

1718. just managing your household well.

  1719. If you're married,

  1720. managing your marriage well.

1721. And if you have children,

  1722. managing your kids well.

  1723. And you say,

  1724. well,

  1725. that's the qualifications

  1726. of an elder.

  1727. Well,

  1728. first of all,

  1729. we should all

  1730. ascribe to the nobility

  1731. of the character qualities

  1732. of an elder.

  1733. D.A. Carson says

1734. one of the most remarkable things

  1735. about the qualifications

  1736. of an elder

1737. is how unremarkable they are.

  1738. You know,

1739. is it really that remarkable

1740. to say that we should

  1741. have healthy families?

  1742. Not really.

  1743. Well,

  1744. that's just for elders.

  1745. Everybody else

1746. can have a bad family.

  1747. No.

  1748. Right?

  1749. Because he says

1750. that he puts a principle

  1751. in here that supersedes

  1752. just eldership.

  1753. He says,

1754. he asks a rhetorical question.

  1755. He says,

1756. if someone does not know

  1757. how to manage

  1758. his own household,

  1759. how will he care

  1760. for God's church?

  1761. Okay?

  1762. And again,

1763. if you have a church

  1764. where people don't have

  1765. good marriages

  1766. and they don't have

  1767. good parenting

  1768. and they don't manage

  1769. their single life well,

  1770. they don't manage

  1771. their households well,

1772. are you going to have

  1773. a healthy church

  1774. in that context?

  1775. No.

  1776. How could you possibly?

1777. If you can't even take care

  1778. of your own household,

1779. how will you take care

  1780. of God's household?

  1781. We've got to start

  1782. with our household.

  1783. How's it going

  1784. in your household?

1785. Is there a character there?

  1786. Good management,

  1787. good stewardship,

  1788. good faithfulness,

  1789. doing the work.

  1790. Doing the work

  1791. in your marriage,

  1792. doing the work

  1793. with your kids,

  1794. doing the work

  1795. as a single person

  1796. to be godly

  1797. and for the glory

  1798. of Christ.

  1799. Okay?

  1800. Number 13.

  1801. Diligent,

  1802. hardworking,

  1803. not lazy.

  1804. James 4, 17

  1805. in the NIV says,

  1806. if anyone then

  1807. knows the good

  1808. he ought to do

  1809. and doesn't do it,

  1810. sins.

1811. If you know the good

  1812. you ought to do

  1813. and don't do it,

  1814. sin.

  1815. You sin, right?

1816. This is like the ultimate

  1817. verse on laziness

  1818. in my opinion, right?

  1819. Because isn't that

  1820. not what laziness is?

  1821. I know the good

  1822. I ought to do.

  1823. But I'm not

1824. going to do it, right?

  1825. I know the good

  1826. I ought to do,

  1827. but I think there's

  1828. something I'd rather do.

1829. But I know the good

  1830. I ought to do,

1831. but I'm not going to do it.

  1832. Well, the Bible

  1833. just says real straight,

  1834. you know,

1835. people get so hung up

  1836. on all the things

  1837. in the Bible

  1838. that seem cryptic

  1839. and hard to understand.

  1840. There's a lot in here

  1841. that's not.

  1842. That's just a

  1843. little disclaimer

1844. I wanted to make there.

1845. Like a verse like this.

1846. If you know the good

  1847. you ought to do,

1848. but you don't do it,

  1849. that person sins.

  1850. Well, that's pretty

  1851. straight talk right there.

1852. And what sin is it?

1853. It's the sin of laziness.

  1854. Laziness sees what

  1855. needs to be done,

1856. knows what needs to be done,

  1857. and says I'm not

  1858. going to do it.

  1859. And that kind of

  1860. lack of character

  1861. in a church

  1862. is a big deal.

  1863. Because there's a lot

  1864. of things that need

  1865. to be done.

  1866. A lot of things

1867. that need to be done

  1868. in our own households,

  1869. a lot of things

1870. that need to be done

  1871. in the church,

  1872. a lot of things

1873. that need to be done

  1874. in the world,

  1875. a lot of things

1876. that need to be done

  1877. just for practical things

  1878. like making money

  1879. and taking care of

1880. putting food on the table.

  1881. There's a lot of things

1882. that need to be done.

  1883. And when you know

1884. the good you ought to do

1885. and you just don't want

  1886. to do it because

1887. that would cost you more,

  1888. that's called sin.

1889. And if any of you

  1890. in this room

1891. have one of those things

1892. or a couple of those things,

  1893. things you know

  1894. you should do,

  1895. things that God's

1896. been telling you to do,

  1897. things that the Word's

  1898. telling you to do,

  1899. things your spouse

1900. has been telling you to do,

  1901. things your friends

1902. have been telling you to do,

1903. and you just won't do it,

  1904. you're in sin

1905. and you need to repent.

  1906. Repent of your laziness.

  1907. Last one, 14.

  1908. Faith, not unbelief.

  1909. Hebrews 3 verse 12 says,

    Hebrews 3:12

  1910. Take care, brothers,

1911. lest there be in any of you

  1912. an evil, unbelieving heart

1913. leading you to fall away

  1914. from the living God.

1915. It's so easy to get an unbelief.

1916. It's so easy to have more faith

  1917. in things not happening

  1918. than things happening.

1919. It's so easy to have...

  1920. Most unbelief really isn't

  1921. a lack of faith.

  1922. It's just faith

  1923. in the wrong direction.

1924. Have you ever thought about that?

  1925. Right?

  1926. If you have unbelief,

  1927. you typically really have

  1928. a strong faith

1929. that something's going to go bad.

  1930. I have a strong belief

1931. that something's not going to work out.

1932. It's not that you lack faith.

  1933. It's just you're placing

  1934. in the wrong thing.

  1935. You actually think

  1936. there's more sense

  1937. in putting your faith

  1938. in something going poorly

1939. based on what you've seen

  1940. rather than something going

1941. the way God says it's going to

  1942. because of God's power

  1943. and promise.

1944. Where does your faith lie?

1945. Be careful that you don't have

  1946. a sinful, unbelieving heart.

1947. When it comes to the church,

  1948. we need faith.

  1949. Faith is the substance

  1950. of things hoped for.

  1951. It's the substance

  1952. of things not seen.

  1953. Faith is looking into

  1954. what you don't see

1955. and trusting that it's real.

  1956. It's more real

1957. than what you don't see.

  1958. Can we have faith

  1959. for this coming year?

  1960. Can we have faith

  1961. for our own character

  1962. and make every effort

  1963. to have these qualities

  1964. in increasing measure

1965. so that we're not ineffective

  1966. and unproductive

  1967. in our knowledge

1968. of the Lord Jesus Christ?

1969. Not forgetting that we've been

1970. cleansed from our past sins.

  1971. being diligent

  1972. to make our calling

  1973. and election sure.

  1974. If we practice

  1975. these qualities,

  1976. we will never fall.

  1977. That's a great way

1978. to look at this next year.

  1979. And again,

  1980. one last time

  1981. just to be clear.

  1982. Please don't do this

  1983. in your own strength.

  1984. This isn't some

  1985. you-ra-ra,

  1986. be a better person

  1987. for the new year.

  1988. This is you-ra-ra,

  1989. you're a really bad person

1990. and you can't be a good person

  1991. for the new year.

  1992. But Jesus,

  1993. by His strength,

  1994. His power,

  1995. and His Spirit,

  1996. is giving you

  1997. everything you need

  1998. for life and godliness.

1999. And if you believe that,

2000. then you make every effort

  2001. to supplement.

  2002. Amen?

  2003. Amen.

  2004. Let's stand.

  2005. Amen.
