  1. If you have your Bibles, you can turn to Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  2. We're continuing our trek through Philippians last, not last week, but the week before that.

  3. Chris preached on Philippians 2, the first portion leading up to verse 12.

  4. I will be talking today about verses 12 through 18.

  5. And before I get started here, I'm going to pray.

  6. Lord, we thank you, God, for your word.

  7. Thank you that we have it, Lord, and we're not in the dark.

  8. Thank you, Lord, that you lead us always.

  9. Pray, Lord, that you would bless this teaching, Lord, that you would speak, Father.

  10. You would give us more reverence for you, more of a bold witness, Lord.

  11. You would teach us how to live a life free from grumbling, complaining.

  12. Lord, encourage us this morning.

  13. Lift us up.

  14. Lift any burdens, I pray, by your Spirit.

  15. In Jesus' name, amen.

  16. Okay, so Philippians 2, starting in verse 12.

  17. Before I read the text, the very first verse says, therefore, which to give some context,

  18. what he's referring therefore to, is the past bunch of verses that actually Chris read.

  19. So I'm just going to go back and read that as a backdrop for what Paul is about to lead into here.

  20. So let's start at the beginning here.

  21. So chapter 2 begins with verse 1.

  22. It says,

  23. Let each of you look not only...

  24. Not only to his own interest, but also to the interest of others.

  25. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.

  26. Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

  27. but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men,

  28. and being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,

  29. even death on a cross.

  30. Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

  31. so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

  32. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  33. So that's the context for what we're about to read.

  34. Amazing text that Chris expounded upon.

  35. If you want to go listen to his sermon, it may help with the interpretation of the rest of this.

  36. But Paul here starts off by saying, therefore, or since, or because of everything I've just said here,

  37. my beloved, in verse 12,

  38. as you always have obeyed, so now not only in my presence, but much more in my absence,

  39. work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

  40. For it is God in you, both to will,

  41. it is God in you who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

  42. Verse 14,

  43. Do all things without grumbling or disputing,

  44. that you may be blameless and innocent children of God,

  45. without blemish, in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation,

  46. among whom you shine as lights in the world,

  47. holding fast to the word of life,

  48. so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

  49. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering,

  50. upon the sacrificial offering of your faith,

  51. I am glad and rejoice with you all.

  52. Likewise, you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

  53. Okay.

  54. So here Paul is setting up his segue out of essentially giving us this image of God in Christ Jesus,

  55. humbling himself, taking the form of a servant,

  56. not counting equality with God a thing to be grasped,

  57. but emptying himself,

  58. him giving us this example of humility to follow in his steps.

  59. He then exhorts them and says,

  60. As you have always obeyed,

  61. so now, not only in my presence,

  62. but much more in my absence,

  63. work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

  64. That's the first thing I'm going to discuss here,

  65. is what it means to work out our salvation with fear and trembling.

  66. But before I do,

  67. one quick thing to note is that he says at the beginning,

  68. a little bit of a buzzword nowadays,

  69. which is,

  70. he says to them that they have always obeyed.

  71. Obedience.

  72. You know,

  73. it's clear in Christianity that we're supposed to obey God.

  74. It is a little bit of a triggering thing for someone to require obedience to a man.

  75. And here Paul says,

  76. As you have always obeyed me,

  77. not only in my presence,

  78. but much more in my absence,

  79. do such and such.

  80. And so it's important to realize that God has

  81. appointed authorities that are to be obeyed.

  82. You know,

  83. there are other places in scripture that,

  84. um,

  85. the scriptures say to obey your leaders and submit to them,

  86. things like this.

  87. And this is one instance where he references,

  88. uh,

  89. maybe his authority,

  90. which can sometimes be a very difficult thing,

  91. depending on,

  92. uh,

  93. your experience with leadership or your experience with authority.

  94. But I would just say really quick,

  95. before we head into the next portion of this,

  96. that Paul's leadership and authority is very different,

  97. um,

  98. than the hurt and the existing authority or so-called authority that many of us have experienced

  99. or can experience or other people have experienced,

  100. because he's doing it in a way that not only is appointed by God,

  101. but is as a father would have over his children.

  102. You can see he starts off by calling them my beloved.

  103. You know,

  104. this isn't like a master slave relationship.

  105. He prefers for it to be father and son.

  106. And so just a quick note,

  107. uh,

  108. on leadership and even Paul's relationship,

  109. the Philippians,

  110. that he's endearing like a father.

  111. He's not requiring things of them like a harsh taskmaster,

  112. uh,

  113. but he's actually representing godly authority,

  114. um,

  115. which requires obedience.

  116. So,

  117. he says,

  118. as you have always obeyed.

  119. So now not only in my presence,

  120. but also more in my absence,

  121. you know,

  122. this,

  123. this kind of means that,

  124. um,

  125. he's not looking for approval,

  126. seeking obedience.

  127. You know,

  128. if you were to seek approval,

  129. um,

  130. there's a temptation to be more adamant about obeying when someone's there versus when they're gone.

  131. Okay.

  132. If you have obedience unto God,

  133. um,

  134. it's consistent across the board,

  135. whether they're there or not,

  136. you're obeying because you know,

  137. uh,

  138. that it's the right thing to do,

  139. that it's from the heart.

  140. And so Paul is affirming that.

  141. He's saying,

  142. not only in my presence are you doing this,

  143. but much more in my absence.

  144. Okay.

  145. So

  146. as they have always obeyed,

  147. now much more do what?

  148. He says,

  149. work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

  150. For it is God who works in you,

  151. both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

  152. That's the first thing I want to talk about is fear and trembling.

  153. Okay.

  154. Um,

  155. there's probably a somewhat unfortunate,

  156. uh,

  157. misreading of the fear of the Lord throughout,

  158. uh,

  159. evangelical Christianity,

  160. which,

  161. uh,

  162. fleshes itself out,

  163. maybe in the phrase of like,

  164. well,

  165. you should never be afraid of God.

  166. You know,

  167. um,

  168. you should,

  169. you should never feel like you can't come to God,

  170. which is true.

  171. We should be able to approach God,

  172. but it's not true that we should not fear God.

  173. God absolutely,

  174. without a doubt,

  175. needs to be feared.

  176. God is,

  177. uh,

  178. holy,

  179. and he is supremely holy,

  180. meaning that there's no one above him.

  181. Everything falls below him.

  182. There's no king on earth,

  183. no government,

  184. no nation that will contest the Lord's will.

  185. He reigns above them all.

  186. And,

  187. uh,

  188. similarly to authorities that we experience,

  189. like governments,

  190. or maybe take it down to local level,

  191. like the,

  192. uh,

  193. local authorities,

  194. police,

  195. what have you.

  196. Um,

  197. if we regard them rightly,

  198. we shouldn't fear them as we would,

  199. um,

  200. if we hadn't.

  201. For example,

  202. I don't,

  203. I'm not afraid of the police or the cops because,

  204. um,

  205. I don't live in constant terror of them because I know what they're there for.

  206. I know that they're there for good.

  207. They're a good authority.

  208. However,

  209. if I'm a criminal,

  210. I probably should be afraid,

  211. you know,

  212. because even the scriptures say,

  213. you know,

  214. that the authorities are not a threat to good conduct,

  215. you know,

  216. but to evil,

  217. you know,

  218. and you should stand in fear.

  219. Similarly with God,

  220. we should have a relationship to God as the utmost supreme authority that lives our life in fear and reverence of him,

  221. because there is no one other than him.

  222. If we,

  223. uh,

  224. die on our way home,

  225. we will stand before the highest authority,

  226. uh,

  227. not only over earth,

  228. but also in heaven.

  229. Um,

  230. and in that day,

  231. um,

  232. we will have to give an account for all that we've done.

  233. But the question is,

  234. how will God deal with us?

  235. And I think it would be a mistake for us to live in such a way as though the fear of the Lord,

  236. the supremacy of God doesn't exist.

  237. Or maybe even what's happened is that through Jesus Christ,

  238. the fear of the Lord is eliminated.

  239. You know,

  240. I think it's possible that amongst,

  241. especially young people,

  242. that when they come to the Lord,

  243. what it means is,

  244. well,

  245. God and Christ has done everything for me.

  246. You know,

  247. uh,

  248. I can just live how I want because he gave me mercy.

  249. He loves me,

  250. you know,

  251. um,

  252. which are all true.

  253. But,

  254. the Lord's works that he did for you

  255. is not a license to forget about the Lord.

  256. Uh,

  257. we see in the whole Old Testament narrative

  258. that God constantly was reminding them,

  259. don't forget the God who brought you out of Egypt.

  260. Okay?

  261. And they,

  262. they forgot him.

  263. You know,

  264. they didn't regard God as holy.

  265. They didn't regard God with fear.

  266. And God brought serious judgment.

  267. Things didn't change in the new covenant

  268. in terms of the fear of the Lord

  269. and God's holiness.

  270. They actually brought,

  271. God brought them to its antithesis,

  272. or it's,

  273. uh,

  274. or excuse me,

  275. it's completion

  276. in the new covenant

  277. by giving man no excuse

  278. to come to God

  279. and to fear him

  280. and regard him as holy.

  281. And so,

  282. when Paul says here,

  283. to bring it back to our text,

  284. he says,

  285. work out your salvation

  286. with fear and trembling.

  287. Pretty much every experience

  288. of the holiness of God

  289. and the,

  290. uh,

  291. uh,

  292. encountering God

  293. in the,

  294. uh,

  295. in the Bible

  296. has resulted in someone

  297. actually trembling before him.

  298. You know,

  299. in Isaiah 6,

  300. when Isaiah comes to the Lord,

  301. doesn't even encounter

  302. all of the Lord,

  303. but just his train,

  304. his robe,

  305. he falls prostrate trembling.

  306. You know,

  307. he's immediately aware

  308. of his own sin

  309. in his life.

  310. And,

  311. uh,

  312. what's interesting

  313. is that God is not just

  314. to be regarded as,

  315. uh,

  316. we shouldn't fear him

  317. in a sense that

  318. leads us to

  319. terror always.

  320. Like,

  321. Isaiah trembled before the Lord

  322. and then what did the Lord do

  323. after he said

  324. that he was a sinner?

  325. He touched his lips

  326. and cleansed him.

  327. Right?

  328. So,

  329. we should live in a,

  330. in a terror that,

  331. in a fear of the Lord

  332. that is right,

  333. but not at the expense

  334. of his other attributes,

  335. like his mercy

  336. and his love,

  337. because he is the one

  338. who cleanses us.

  339. Right?

  340. He's a good authority.

  341. We shouldn't fear him

  342. because he's a bad one,

  343. essentially.

  344. He is indeed good.

  345. But what does it mean

  346. to work out

  347. our salvation

  348. with fear and trembling?

  349. I was confronted with this

  350. as I was preparing

  351. and I'm like,

  352. do I live,

  353. I ask myself,

  354. do I live my life

  355. as though I genuinely

  356. fear the Lord

  357. as the supreme authority

  358. compared to any other authority

  359. or person

  360. at all?

  361. You know?

  362. Or do I regard man

  363. in competition with God?

  364. Do I say that

  365. I fear the Lord

  366. but really I'm afraid of

  367. the things of this life?

  368. And I was,

  369. I was probing myself,

  370. I was asking,

  371. Lord,

  372. give me more

  373. genuine fear of you

  374. as the supreme God

  375. who rules.

  376. You know?

  377. Paul says

  378. to work out

  379. your salvation

  380. with fear and trembling.

  381. Similarly to

  382. in Exodus

  383. when

  384. God delivers

  385. the Israelites,

  386. you know,

  387. he gives them

  388. Moses

  389. as a leader,

  390. parts the Red Sea,

  391. leads them out of slavery

  392. and

  393. that was their salvation.

  394. It wasn't salvation

  395. necessarily

  396. unto

  397. bliss yet.

  398. You know,

  399. he led them

  400. in the wilderness

  401. and

  402. eventually he

  403. was going to lead them

  404. into the promised land

  405. but similarly to us

  406. in the new covenant,

  407. God has saved us

  408. not by delivering us

  409. out of slavery

  410. of Egypt

  411. but maybe

  412. as a spiritual slavery,

  413. right,

  414. Egypt of the heart,

  415. right,

  416. and saved us

  417. into

  418. the new covenant

  419. through his own blood,

  420. parting of the

  421. Red Sea

  422. of his blood,

  423. right?

  424. And so

  425. we should regard him

  426. even more.

  427. You know,

  428. God dealt with

  429. the,

  430. what seemed to be

  431. the outward

  432. circumstantial

  433. oppression

  434. of

  435. Egypt

  436. on his people

  437. and now

  438. God has

  439. not only dealt

  440. with

  441. those things

  442. but in our hearts

  443. he's dealt

  444. with the thing

  445. that

  446. we never could,

  447. you know,

  448. and we should tremble

  449. at the Lord

  450. for doing this,

  451. you know.

  452. There was no other

  453. person,

  454. not in ourselves,

  455. no Savior

  456. out there

  457. that could do that.

  458. God himself

  459. had to be the one

  460. to take us out.

  461. So what does it

  462. mean to fear

  463. and tremble?

  464. I mainly was

  465. thinking when I was

  466. preparing about

  467. the holiness

  468. of God,

  469. that,

  470. do I regard

  471. God as holy?

  472. And just to

  473. remind us this

  474. morning,

  475. not only that God

  476. is holy,

  477. but that holiness

  478. means

  479. apartness.

  480. God is

  481. other than

  482. us.

  483. We're not

  484. like God.

  485. You know,

  486. the scriptures

  487. say,

  488. the Lord

  489. actually rebukes

  490. the people

  491. in the scriptures

  492. and said,

  493. you thought

  494. that I was

  495. one like

  496. yourselves,

  497. like a man,

  498. like I would

  499. reason,

  500. you know,

  501. which is not

  502. so.

  503. A.W. Pink

  504. says,

  505. on God's

  506. holiness,

  507. he is so,

  508. speaking of

  509. his holiness,

  510. he is so

  511. because the

  512. sum of all

  513. moral excellency

  514. is found in

  515. him.

  516. He is

  517. absolute purity,

  518. unsoiled by

  519. even the

  520. shadow of

  521. sin.

  522. All us

  523. creatures live

  524. underneath the

  525. shadow of

  526. sin.

  527. We're being

  528. saved out of

  529. the shadow of

  530. sin if we're

  531. in Christ,

  532. but God is

  533. completely other

  534. than us in

  535. that he is

  536. untainted,

  537. not affected.

  538. He rules over

  539. sin with

  540. utmost purity.

  541. And because

  542. of that,

  543. we have to

  544. regard him

  545. as holy.

  546. We have to

  547. regard him

  548. as high and

  549. lifted up.

  550. We have to

  551. fear him

  552. who is

  553. utterly

  554. perfect,

  555. without any

  556. flaw at

  557. all.

  558. What is

  559. home?

  560. Habakkuk,

  561. Habakkuk 1.13

  562. says,

  563. the prophet

  564. says,

  565. you who

  566. are of

  567. pure eyes,

  568. purer eyes

  569. than to

  570. see evil

  571. and cannot

  572. look at

  573. wrong.

  574. God's eyes

  575. are purer,

  576. so much so

  577. that he

  578. can't stand

  579. to look at

  580. evil.

  581. He's so far

  582. other.

  583. We need to

  584. treat God

  585. this way,

  586. Christchurch.

  587. Not at the

  588. expense of his

  589. other attributes,

  590. obviously.

  591. but we

  592. shouldn't

  593. forget that

  594. he is

  595. always holy.

  596. We should

  597. fear him.

  598. We should

  599. work out

  600. our salvation,

  601. the salvation

  602. that was

  603. purchased by

  604. Jesus Christ.

  605. We should

  606. work that

  607. out with

  608. reverence

  609. and fear

  610. to him.

  611. I talked

  612. a little bit

  613. about the

  614. narrative of

  615. the Old

  616. Testament.

  617. This is

  618. Deuteronomy

  619. 6.

  620. In verse

  621. 10 it

  622. says,

  623. When the

  624. Lord your

  625. God brings

  626. you into

  627. the land

  628. he swore to

  629. your fathers,

  630. to Abraham,

  631. to Isaac,

  632. to Jacob,

  633. to give

  634. you with

  635. great and

  636. good cities

  637. that you

  638. did not

  639. build,

  640. and houses

  641. full of all

  642. good things

  643. that you

  644. did not

  645. fill,

  646. and cisterns

  647. that you

  648. did not

  649. dig,

  650. and vineyards

  651. and olive

  652. trees that

  653. you did

  654. not plant,

  655. and when

  656. you eat

  657. and are

  658. full,

  659. then take

  660. care lest

  661. you forget

  662. the Lord,

  663. who brought

  664. you out of

  665. the land

  666. of Egypt,

  667. out of the

  668. house of

  669. slavery.

  670. It is the

  671. Lord your

  672. God you

  673. shall fear,

  674. him you

  675. shall serve,

  676. and by his

  677. name you

  678. shall swear.

  679. So the

  680. Lord is

  681. actually to

  682. be feared.

  683. You know?

  684. We should

  685. approach God

  686. with reverence

  687. and fear.

  688. We shouldn't

  689. run away

  690. from God

  691. out of fear.

  692. We should

  693. approach him

  694. through fear,

  695. knowing that

  696. he will

  697. take us

  698. in,

  699. he will

  700. accept us,

  701. he will

  702. love us,

  703. he will

  704. show us

  705. mercy,

  706. but we

  707. should approach

  708. him rightly.

  709. Paul says

  710. to work out

  711. our salvation

  712. this way.

  713. Here's another

  714. one in regards

  715. to our

  716. salvation.

  717. Romans 11,

    Romans 11:18–21

  718. verse 18

  719. through 21

  720. says,

  721. do not be

  722. arrogant towards

  723. the branches,

  724. speaking of

  725. Israel.

  726. If you

  727. are,

  728. remember,

  729. it is not

  730. you who

  731. support the

  732. root,

  733. but the

  734. root that

  735. supports you.

  736. Then you

  737. will say,

  738. branches were

  739. broken off so

  740. that I might

  741. be grafted

  742. in.

  743. That is

  744. true,

  745. verse 20

  746. says,

  747. they were

  748. broken off

  749. because of

  750. their unbelief,

  751. but you

  752. stand fast

  753. through faith.

  754. So do not

  755. be proud,

  756. but fear.

  757. There it

  758. is.

  759. Do not

  760. be proud,

  761. but fear.

  762. For if God

  763. did not

  764. spare the

  765. natural

  766. branches,

  767. neither will

  768. he spare

  769. you.

  770. This is a

  771. warning to

  772. regard God

  773. as holy.

  774. He dealt

  775. with his

  776. chosen people,

  777. Israel,

  778. in a way

  779. that he

  780. kept telling

  781. them,

  782. understand

  783. this,

  784. that I'm

  785. the holy

  786. one.

  787. All

  788. others

  789. might share

  790. in holiness

  791. resulting in

  792. God.

  793. Okay?

  794. God does

  795. not possess

  796. holiness,

  797. merely as

  798. something that

  799. he takes

  800. up and

  801. puts down.

  802. God is

  803. holy.

  804. He's the

  805. very definition

  806. of holy,

  807. right?

  808. So we

  809. should not

  810. be proud,

  811. but we

  812. should fear.

  813. Being grateful,

  814. being thankful

  815. in Christ

  816. that we were

  817. actually grafted

  818. in.

  819. This was a

  820. miracle,

  821. according to

  822. grace.

  823. Paul says

  824. to work

  825. out your

  826. salvation

  827. with fear

  828. and trembling.

  829. This one

  830. really struck

  831. me.

  832. I was

  833. asking myself,

  834. I'm like,

  835. do I live

  836. my life so

  837. that others,

  838. if they were

  839. to be kind

  840. of a fly

  841. on the wall,

  842. you know,

  843. can look at

  844. me and say,

  845. that guy

  846. really,

  847. he has a

  848. really high

  849. regard for

  850. a supremacy

  851. that is outside

  852. of this world.

  853. You know,

  854. that guy

  855. follows a

  856. God that

  857. is much

  858. higher than

  859. just the

  860. president,

  861. that is much

  862. higher than

  863. anything on

  864. earth.

  865. That guy

  866. is in

  867. submission

  868. to the

  869. Lord,

  870. right?

  871. Do we

  872. live our

  873. lives like

  874. we actually

  875. fear the

  876. Lord?

  877. Okay,

  878. verse 13.

  879. He says,

  880. for it

  881. is God

  882. who works

  883. in you

  884. both to

  885. will and

  886. to work

  887. for his

  888. good pleasure.

  889. So Paul

  890. expounds,

  891. he says,

  892. when you

  893. work out

  894. your

  895. salvation,

  896. do it

  897. with fear

  898. and trembling.

  899. And the

  900. reason why

  901. you should

  902. fear and

  903. tremble is

  904. because God

  905. dwells in

  906. you.

  907. You know,

  908. like I was

  909. just saying,

  910. if God

  911. is completely

  912. other,

  913. completely

  914. holy,

  915. that his

  916. holiness is

  917. so removed

  918. from the

  919. sinner,

  920. he can't

  921. dwell in

  922. a sinful

  923. vessel.

  924. Paul's

  925. saying that,

  926. don't you

  927. realize what's

  928. happened in

  929. Christ?

  930. is that

  931. God,

  932. who is

  933. so holy,

  934. has come

  935. down,

  936. condescended,

  937. wrapped himself

  938. in human

  939. flesh,

  940. and then

  941. entered by

  942. his spirit

  943. into you.

  944. He's like,

  945. you should

  946. fear and

  947. tremble.

  948. God

  949. dwells in

  950. you.

  951. What a

  952. privilege to

  953. even be a

  954. person who

  955. God might

  956. enter into.

  957. But what a

  958. humbling thing.

  959. You know what I'm

  960. saying?

  961. This is true,

  962. Christchurch.

  963. If God

  964. really dwells

  965. in us,

  966. we should

  967. understand the

  968. God who

  969. dwells in

  970. us.

  971. You know

  972. what I'm

  973. saying?

  974. He says,

  975. for it is

  976. God in

  977. you.

  978. He doesn't

  979. sit idle in

  980. us,

  981. right?

  982. What does he

  983. do?

  984. He says,

  985. for it is

  986. God who

  987. works in

  988. you.

  989. Not only does

  990. he work,

  991. but he

  992. says,

  993. both to

  994. will and

  995. to work,

  996. which means

  997. that God

  998. transforms our

  999. hearts,

  1000. who previously,

  1001. before he

  1002. had made us

  1003. born again,

  1004. had left us

  1005. to our own

  1006. will.

  1007. If I was

  1008. left to my

  1009. own will,

  1010. I would

  1011. only reap

  1012. corruption,

  1013. right?

  1014. I would

  1015. only,

  1016. the Bible

  1017. speaks of

  1018. sin being

  1019. actually the

  1020. bondage.

  1021. Our will is

  1022. in bondage

  1023. to sin.

  1024. I would

  1025. only choose

  1026. sin apart

  1027. from God's

  1028. grace.

  1029. And Paul

  1030. says here

  1031. that,

  1032. don't you

  1033. realize that

  1034. God is

  1035. the one

  1036. who wills

  1037. in you?

  1038. The reason

  1039. why you

  1040. can bring

  1041. him good

  1042. pleasure is

  1043. because he's

  1044. the one

  1045. who began

  1046. the good

  1047. work in

  1048. you.

  1049. He's

  1050. willing it,

  1051. you know,

  1052. to come to

  1053. pass,

  1054. right?

  1055. He's getting

  1056. those desires

  1057. inside of

  1058. you to

  1059. want him.

  1060. We should

  1061. fear.

  1062. Make no

  1063. mistake that

  1064. although we

  1065. have desires,

  1066. that the

  1067. origin of

  1068. those desires

  1069. aren't

  1070. necessarily

  1071. ours.

  1072. That

  1073. when you

  1074. realize that

  1075. the reason

  1076. that you

  1077. live your

  1078. life in a

  1079. way that

  1080. is pleasing

  1081. to God

  1082. is because

  1083. of God,

  1084. that makes

  1085. you humble.

  1086. That puts

  1087. you in your

  1088. place and

  1089. says,

  1090. wow,

  1091. like,

  1092. Lord,

  1093. apart from

  1094. you,

  1095. I don't

  1096. think I

  1097. would choose

  1098. you at

  1099. all.

  1100. You know?

  1101. In fact,

  1102. I think it

  1103. would be

  1104. to the

  1105. contrary.

  1106. You know?

  1107. So far to

  1108. the contrary

  1109. that looking

  1110. at my

  1111. life now

  1112. and the

  1113. decisions I've

  1114. made,

  1115. I can only

  1116. give you

  1117. praise.

  1118. Right?

  1119. It's both

  1120. to will

  1121. and to

  1122. work.

  1123. So God

  1124. doesn't just

  1125. change our

  1126. hearts and

  1127. then leave

  1128. us,

  1129. right?

  1130. Doesn't

  1131. make us

  1132. desire good

  1133. things and

  1134. then do

  1135. nothing,

  1136. right?

  1137. From that

  1138. place of

  1139. transformation,

  1140. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1141. chapter 2,

  1142. the end of

  1143. it says that

  1144. he actually

  1145. our created

  1146. purpose was

  1147. for his

  1148. workmanship.

  1149. You know?

  1150. He created

  1151. us for good

  1152. works and

  1153. praise,

  1154. right?

  1155. Again,

  1156. not wrought

  1157. by us by

  1158. any means,

  1159. but he

  1160. did it so

  1161. that we

  1162. might accomplish

  1163. something,

  1164. okay?

  1165. So Paul's

  1166. saying that.

  1167. He's like,

  1168. you don't

  1169. understand.

  1170. If God,

  1171. if God who

  1172. is holy

  1173. came down

  1174. to this

  1175. earth and

  1176. now dwells

  1177. in you,

  1178. you're not

  1179. supposed to

  1180. be idle

  1181. anymore and

  1182. do nothing,

  1183. but you're

  1184. also not

  1185. supposed to

  1186. be heaping

  1187. up things

  1188. of the

  1189. flesh that

  1190. are old

  1191. desires like

  1192. malice and

  1193. these things

  1194. because God

  1195. actually is

  1196. transforming you

  1197. both to

  1198. will and

  1199. to work.

  1200. So not

  1201. only do you

  1202. have new

  1203. desires now,

  1204. but they're

  1205. for a

  1206. purpose.

  1207. They're

  1208. for to

  1209. do the

  1210. works of

  1211. God,

  1212. right?

  1213. And what's

  1214. the ultimate

  1215. end?

  1216. What do

  1217. all these

  1218. works end

  1219. in?

  1220. He concludes

  1221. verse 13

  1222. by saying,

  1223. for his

  1224. good pleasure,

  1225. okay?

  1226. God gets

  1227. delight from

  1228. our life

  1229. that he

  1230. indwells.

  1231. You know,

  1232. it's like

  1233. this circle,

  1234. you know?

  1235. But it's

  1236. not a

  1237. circle that

  1238. we're

  1239. removed

  1240. from,

  1241. you know?

  1242. It's not

  1243. that we're

  1244. over here

  1245. and God

  1246. just like,

  1247. all right,

  1248. I'm going

  1249. to take

  1250. over and

  1251. you're going

  1252. to just

  1253. kind of sit

  1254. by and

  1255. watch everything

  1256. happen.

  1257. No,

  1258. we are the

  1259. means by

  1260. which God

  1261. actually brings

  1262. completion to

  1263. the work,

  1264. brings

  1265. some self-pleasure,

  1266. right?

  1267. And so

  1268. when we

  1269. realize,

  1270. which Paul

  1271. is reminding

  1272. us about,

  1273. that God

  1274. is the

  1275. one who

  1276. lives in

  1277. us,

  1278. that he

  1279. actually

  1280. lives,

  1281. that he's

  1282. not dead

  1283. in us

  1284. or alive

  1285. in someone

  1286. else,

  1287. right?

  1288. But he's

  1289. living in

  1290. us.

  1291. Each person

  1292. who is in

  1293. Christ,

  1294. Jesus lives

  1295. in you.

  1296. That

  1297. produces

  1298. an awareness

  1299. and humility

  1300. and fear.

  1301. You know,

  1302. I think that's

  1303. the context

  1304. that we see

  1305. that Paul

  1306. is speaking

  1307. out of.

  1308. You know,

  1309. he just got

  1310. done saying

  1311. do nothing

  1312. from selfish

  1313. ambition,

  1314. but in

  1315. humility,

  1316. right?

  1317. Jesus humbled

  1318. himself.

  1319. He emptied

  1320. himself,

  1321. right?

  1322. We ought

  1323. to realize

  1324. that he now

  1325. dwells in us,

  1326. you know,

  1327. and be humble

  1328. about that.

  1329. For it is

  1330. God who

  1331. works in

  1332. you both

  1333. to will

  1334. and to

  1335. work for

  1336. his good

  1337. pleasure.

  1338. So Paul

  1339. exhorts them

  1340. to realize

  1341. who lives

  1342. inside of

  1343. them,

  1344. right?

  1345. To regard

  1346. him with

  1347. fear and

  1348. with trembling,

  1349. to still

  1350. approach God

  1351. as he is,

  1352. not how he

  1353. isn't,

  1354. or is not,

  1355. you know.

  1356. And then in

  1357. verse 14,

  1358. moving on,

  1359. he gives

  1360. an exhortation.

  1361. Verse 14

  1362. says,

  1363. do all

  1364. things

  1365. without

  1366. grumbling

  1367. or disputing,

  1368. that you

  1369. may be

  1370. blameless

  1371. and innocent

  1372. children of

  1373. God,

  1374. without

  1375. blemish

  1376. in the

  1377. midst of

  1378. a crooked

  1379. and twisted

  1380. generation,

  1381. among whom

  1382. you shine

  1383. as lights

  1384. in the

  1385. world,

  1386. holding

  1387. fast to

  1388. the word

  1389. of life.

  1390. So real

  1391. quick,

  1392. he starts

  1393. off by

  1394. saying,

  1395. do all

  1396. things

  1397. without

  1398. grumbling

  1399. or complaining,

  1400. and that's

  1401. one of my

  1402. other points.

  1403. So fear

  1404. and trembling,

  1405. realizing

  1406. that God

  1407. is in

  1408. us,

  1409. and then

  1410. this exhortation

  1411. to do

  1412. nothing from

  1413. grumbling

  1414. or disputing,

  1415. it says.

  1416. He says,

  1417. do all

  1418. things,

  1419. not just

  1420. church

  1421. things,

  1422. not just

  1423. work

  1424. things,

  1425. not just

  1426. home

  1427. things,

  1428. right?

  1429. Wherever

  1430. you are,

  1431. as long

  1432. as God

  1433. is in

  1434. you,

  1435. that means

  1436. wherever

  1437. you go,

  1438. God

  1439. goes with

  1440. you,

  1441. right?

  1442. Do

  1443. all

  1444. things

  1445. without

  1446. grumbling

  1447. or disputing.

  1448. How

  1449. often do

  1450. we complain?

  1451. You know,

  1452. like,

  1453. seems like,

  1454. honestly,

  1455. it's the

  1456. rule of,

  1457. or order

  1458. of the

  1459. day,

  1460. rule of

  1461. the day.

  1462. Like,

  1463. if you

  1464. can go

  1465. a day

  1466. without

  1467. being around

  1468. someone

  1469. complaining,

  1470. or you

  1471. yourself

  1472. not

  1473. complaining,

  1474. it's like

  1475. missing

  1476. a cup

  1477. of coffee

  1478. in the

  1479. morning.

  1480. You know,

  1481. it's just

  1482. like,

  1483. oh man,

  1484. I didn't

  1485. get my

  1486. daily dose

  1487. of grumbling,

  1488. you know?

  1489. It's like,

  1490. it's everywhere

  1491. all the time.

  1492. Seriously,

  1493. like,

  1494. there is a

  1495. spirit

  1496. that can be

  1497. shared

  1498. in the

  1499. workforce

  1500. that looks

  1501. like,

  1502. I'll just

  1503. gripe about

  1504. whatever's

  1505. lacking,

  1506. whatever I'm

  1507. not getting,

  1508. whoever in

  1509. authority is not

  1510. doing a great

  1511. job,

  1512. and it's

  1513. contagious,

  1514. you know?

  1515. It's just

  1516. like,

  1517. if you're

  1518. not griping

  1519. at work,

  1520. like,

  1521. what are

  1522. you doing,

  1523. enjoying

  1524. work?

  1525. You know?

  1526. And,

  1527. but it's

  1528. not just

  1529. work,

  1530. it's other

  1531. areas of

  1532. life,

  1533. you know?

  1534. It's at

  1535. our home,

  1536. you know,

  1537. when people

  1538. aren't with

  1539. you,

  1540. you know,

  1541. how do you

  1542. talk about

  1543. your wife?

  1544. You know,

  1545. how do you

  1546. talk about

  1547. your kids?

  1548. How do you

  1549. talk about

  1550. your roommates?

  1551. How do you

  1552. talk about,

  1553. you know,

  1554. insert your

  1555. personal

  1556. thing to

  1557. grumble

  1558. about,

  1559. right?

  1560. And at

  1561. bare minimum,

  1562. although people

  1563. might not

  1564. see it,

  1565. it comes

  1566. out still,

  1567. right?

  1568. But I

  1569. think to

  1570. hold to

  1571. this text a

  1572. little bit

  1573. more

  1574. specifically,

  1575. in the

  1576. context of

  1577. grumbling and

  1578. complaining,

  1579. he is talking

  1580. about the

  1581. onlooking

  1582. world,

  1583. looking at

  1584. our life,

  1585. right?

  1586. So he

  1587. says,

  1588. the reason

  1589. that we

  1590. shouldn't

  1591. grumble,

  1592. complain,

  1593. is that we

  1594. might be

  1595. blameless,

  1596. and that we

  1597. might shine

  1598. as lights

  1599. in the

  1600. world,

  1601. right?

  1602. So if

  1603. Adam goes

  1604. to work,

  1605. you know,

  1606. works with

  1607. all of his

  1608. city buddies,

  1609. and all of

  1610. them are in

  1611. a huddle,

  1612. grumbling

  1613. about such

  1614. and such,

  1615. or how the

  1616. new codes

  1617. are terrible,

  1618. or the

  1619. person in

  1620. authority is

  1621. this or

  1622. that,

  1623. but he's

  1624. not

  1625. participating,

  1626. grumbling,

  1627. or maybe

  1628. he says

  1629. something to

  1630. lead the

  1631. conversation

  1632. away from

  1633. grumbling,

  1634. maybe towards

  1635. some type

  1636. of gratefulness

  1637. for something,

  1638. that's going

  1639. to be weird

  1640. to them,

  1641. right?

  1642. That light's

  1643. going to shine

  1644. a little bit,

  1645. and people are

  1646. going to be

  1647. like,

  1648. wait,

  1649. you're not

  1650. joining in

  1651. the fun,

  1652. you're not

  1653. joining in

  1654. the obvious

  1655. thing that we

  1656. should grumble

  1657. about,

  1658. right?

  1659. That's one

  1660. example,

  1661. but we're

  1662. served many

  1663. examples.

  1664. Every day

  1665. that you

  1666. wake up,

  1667. there's

  1668. opportunities

  1669. that are

  1670. directly on

  1671. your plate

  1672. to complain

  1673. and grumble,

  1674. and in the

  1675. context of

  1676. this verse,

  1677. it seems to

  1678. me that

  1679. through Jesus,

  1680. we really

  1681. have no

  1682. excuse to

  1683. grumble.

  1684. Everything

  1685. is gift,

  1686. right?

  1687. Everything

  1688. is gracious,

  1689. right?

  1690. Not to say

  1691. that there

  1692. shouldn't be

  1693. things that

  1694. we should

  1695. address,

  1696. that are

  1697. issues,

  1698. but we

  1699. shouldn't

  1700. gripe about

  1701. our life,

  1702. we shouldn't

  1703. gripe about

  1704. others,

  1705. we should,

  1706. in humility,

  1707. address those

  1708. things,

  1709. right?

  1710. So my

  1711. question to

  1712. yours is

  1713. where do we

  1714. complain,

  1715. you know?

  1716. We're a

  1717. church.

  1718. We're

  1719. striving to

  1720. be, as

  1721. the Lord

  1722. said,

  1723. which is a

  1724. light on

  1725. a hill,

  1726. right?

  1727. Nobody

  1728. takes a

  1729. light and

  1730. puts a

  1731. basket over

  1732. it.

  1733. You let

  1734. your light

  1735. shine,

  1736. you know,

  1737. he says,

  1738. right?

  1739. And

  1740. recently we

  1741. have been

  1742. talking a

  1743. lot about

  1744. culture

  1745. building as

  1746. a body.

  1747. I think

  1748. this is one

  1749. value to

  1750. throw into

  1751. the mix

  1752. of culture,

  1753. especially

  1754. given a lot

  1755. of us have

  1756. strong opinions,

  1757. ideas about

  1758. things,

  1759. not even that

  1760. any of those

  1761. are bad,

  1762. but let us

  1763. take care of

  1764. not to

  1765. grumble,

  1766. period.

  1767. or to

  1768. use the

  1769. things,

  1770. maybe that

  1771. are good

  1772. ideas,

  1773. as a way

  1774. of grumbling,

  1775. you know?

  1776. But it

  1777. also doesn't

  1778. say just

  1779. grumbling,

  1780. it says

  1781. disputing,

  1782. too,

  1783. you know?

  1784. Maybe you

  1785. avoid grumbling,

  1786. but maybe you

  1787. just like to

  1788. fight,

  1789. too.

  1790. Maybe you

  1791. like to

  1792. dispute,

  1793. maybe you

  1794. like a

  1795. good dispute,

  1796. you know?

  1797. Yeah,

  1798. some fights

  1799. are worth it,

  1800. right?

  1801. Honorable,

  1802. honorable disputes,

  1803. but a lot

  1804. of times we

  1805. can get

  1806. caught up

  1807. in stuff

  1808. that is

  1809. not worth

  1810. it,

  1811. you know?

  1812. So,

  1813. do all

  1814. things

  1815. without that,

  1816. without grumbling

  1817. or disputing.

  1818. Why?

  1819. Why do we

  1820. do that?

  1821. So that

  1822. you might

  1823. be blameless,

  1824. innocent,

  1825. children of

  1826. God,

  1827. without blemish,

  1828. in the midst

  1829. of a twisted

  1830. and crooked

  1831. generation,

  1832. okay?

  1833. So the

  1834. reason that

  1835. Paul exhorts

  1836. them to

  1837. not grumble,

  1838. not dispute,

  1839. is because

  1840. the onlooking

  1841. world already

  1842. has enough

  1843. to blame

  1844. each other

  1845. for,

  1846. right?

  1847. The church

  1848. unfortunately

  1849. has enough

  1850. egg on

  1851. her face

  1852. to be

  1853. blameworthy,

  1854. it seems,

  1855. many things,

  1856. maybe some

  1857. not true,

  1858. maybe some

  1859. misrepresentations,

  1860. maybe things

  1861. that are

  1862. actually true,

  1863. right?

  1864. Paul is

  1865. exhorting them

  1866. to live a

  1867. life that is

  1868. free from

  1869. blame,

  1870. right?

  1871. And someone

  1872. will say to

  1873. me,

  1874. like,

  1875. geez,

  1876. blameless,

  1877. innocent,

  1878. without blemish,

  1879. like,

  1880. we're sinners,

  1881. man.

  1882. You know,

  1883. like,

  1884. we're never

  1885. going to be

  1886. blameless,

  1887. never going to

  1888. be innocent,

  1889. right?

  1890. Like,

  1891. it's true that

  1892. all of us

  1893. have sin,

  1894. and all of us

  1895. can be worthy

  1896. of blame,

  1897. but Paul is

  1898. talking specifically

  1899. about your

  1900. life being

  1901. free from the

  1902. blame of the

  1903. world,

  1904. right?

  1905. Like,

  1906. Paul says

  1907. that elders

  1908. must be

  1909. above reproach,

  1910. right?

  1911. They should be

  1912. free from

  1913. reproach,

  1914. not that they

  1915. should be

  1916. completely

  1917. innocent or

  1918. free from

  1919. sin,

  1920. right?

  1921. But if the

  1922. world looks at

  1923. us and they

  1924. were to do

  1925. just a brief

  1926. survey of the

  1927. areas of our

  1928. life,

  1929. well,

  1930. they'd be like,

  1931. oh,

  1932. man,

  1933. there's really

  1934. not many

  1935. areas of

  1936. blame,

  1937. you know?

  1938. That's what

  1939. Paul is getting

  1940. at.

  1941. We know that

  1942. because he

  1943. literally says,

  1944. among whom you

  1945. shine as lights

  1946. in the world,

  1947. right?

  1948. Just for the

  1949. purpose of

  1950. staggering an

  1951. unbeliever,

  1952. being like,

  1953. what is wrong

  1954. with you?

  1955. Like,

  1956. how do you

  1957. live so free

  1958. from reproach?

  1959. Like,

  1960. I feel like my

  1961. friends are all,

  1962. like,

  1963. all of us are,

  1964. you know,

  1965. blameworthy.

  1966. He's saying,

  1967. do this in the

  1968. midst of a

  1969. generation that

  1970. isn't like this

  1971. at all.

  1972. In the midst of

  1973. a crooked and

  1974. twisted generation,

  1975. right?

  1976. This generation is

  1977. so perverse in

  1978. so many ways,

  1979. and honestly,

  1980. a lot of it

  1981. results in just

  1982. being ungrateful.

  1983. Part of the

  1984. reason why

  1985. many people in

  1986. my generation

  1987. are the way that

  1988. they are is

  1989. because a lot

  1990. of lives were

  1991. laid down for

  1992. them to live

  1993. the life of

  1994. ease and

  1995. freedom that

  1996. is now being

  1997. squandered.

  1998. A very

  1999. entitled life,

  2000. an ungrateful

  2001. life at the

  2002. root is saying,

  2003. you know,

  2004. it doesn't matter

  2005. what our

  2006. fathers did,

  2007. you know,

  2008. it doesn't

  2009. matter what

  2010. the age it

  2011. did,

  2012. I'll live my

  2013. life how I

  2014. want.

  2015. So incredibly

  2016. ungrateful.

  2017. you know,

  2018. and maybe

  2019. you're among

  2020. the ages of

  2021. that generation

  2022. and you can

  2023. see that

  2024. whoever we

  2025. are,

  2026. we're still

  2027. exhorted to

  2028. be blame-free

  2029. of this

  2030. sin of

  2031. grumbling,

  2032. complaining,

  2033. right?

  2034. verse 15

  2035. ends with

  2036. among whom

  2037. you shine

  2038. as lights

  2039. in the

  2040. world.

  2041. So that's

  2042. the purpose.

  2043. Let the

  2044. world see

  2045. our good

  2046. works and

  2047. actually turn

  2048. to God

  2049. to glorify

  2050. him,

  2051. right?

  2052. Verse 16

  2053. says,

  2054. holding fast

  2055. to the

  2056. word of

  2057. life,

  2058. so that in

  2059. the day of

  2060. Christ,

  2061. I may be

  2062. proud that

  2063. it did not

  2064. run in

  2065. vain or

  2066. labor in

  2067. vain.

  2068. So,

  2069. Paul is

  2070. building

  2071. many churches,

  2072. Philippi is

  2073. one of them,

  2074. and I think

  2075. in Corinthians,

  2076. Paul expounds

  2077. upon the

  2078. work that

  2079. each person

  2080. builds will

  2081. be tested

  2082. one day

  2083. by fire,

  2084. and only

  2085. that which

  2086. passes through

  2087. the fire

  2088. will remain,

  2089. right?

  2090. So he's

  2091. saying,

  2092. like,

  2093. if we

  2094. as a

  2095. church

  2096. are building

  2097. one another,

  2098. right,

  2099. and we

  2100. are spurring

  2101. each other

  2102. on to

  2103. love and

  2104. good works,

  2105. that's going

  2106. to result

  2107. in something

  2108. that either

  2109. is eternal

  2110. or will

  2111. be burned

  2112. up,

  2113. right?

  2114. And so

  2115. Paul's

  2116. concerned,

  2117. he's like,

  2118. hey,

  2119. don't do

  2120. anything with

  2121. grumbling or

  2122. disputing,

  2123. be blameless,

  2124. shine,

  2125. you know,

  2126. so that

  2127. when my

  2128. work is

  2129. tested,

  2130. I wouldn't

  2131. have built

  2132. you guys

  2133. in vain,

  2134. you know?

  2135. I want to

  2136. build God's

  2137. house,

  2138. not any

  2139. other house,

  2140. right?

  2141. But he

  2142. says to do

  2143. it in a

  2144. specific way,

  2145. which is to

  2146. hold fast to

  2147. the word of

  2148. life.

  2149. Holding

  2150. fast,

  2151. I love that

  2152. image.

  2153. A parallel

  2154. passage is

  2155. in 1

  2156. John 1.

  2157. I should

  2158. have written

  2159. it up here,

  2160. I don't have

  2161. it,

  2162. but it's

  2163. 1 John 1,

  2164. it starts

  2165. off by

  2166. saying,

  2167. that which

  2168. we have

  2169. heard from

  2170. the beginning,

  2171. which we

  2172. have seen,

  2173. which we

  2174. have looked

  2175. upon and

  2176. touched with

  2177. our hands,

  2178. concerning the

  2179. word of

  2180. life.

  2181. life.

  2182. There's this

  2183. phrase,

  2184. concerning the

  2185. word of

  2186. life,

  2187. speaking about

  2188. Jesus,

  2189. right?

  2190. Jesus,

  2191. the person,

  2192. not necessarily

  2193. the word of

  2194. life as the

  2195. message,

  2196. but more

  2197. specifically,

  2198. Christ as

  2199. the word of

  2200. life,

  2201. completely

  2202. embodied.

  2203. Same thing

  2204. here,

  2205. it's the same

  2206. thing in

  2207. Greek.

  2208. So,

  2209. when we read

  2210. holding fast to

  2211. the word of

  2212. life,

  2213. you can

  2214. probably just

  2215. insert holding

  2216. fast to

  2217. Jesus as

  2218. the word of

  2219. life himself.

  2220. love.

  2221. And,

  2222. man,

  2223. it is hard

  2224. to hold fast

  2225. sometimes,

  2226. you know?

  2227. I was reminded

  2228. of that yesterday,

  2229. this morning,

  2230. and,

  2231. or this week,

  2232. but we must

  2233. hold fast as

  2234. if our lives

  2235. depend on it,

  2236. you know?

  2237. The scriptures

  2238. exhort us to

  2239. fight the good

  2240. fight of faith,

  2241. not to say that

  2242. it's not a

  2243. fight.

  2244. It is a

  2245. fight.

  2246. Okay?

  2247. Which means

  2248. there will be

  2249. days that

  2250. you feel like

  2251. you have to

  2252. give extra

  2253. energy to

  2254. something to

  2255. fight,

  2256. and not

  2257. give up.

  2258. If you're in

  2259. a battle,

  2260. you can't just

  2261. call it quits,

  2262. right?

  2263. You gotta keep

  2264. fighting.

  2265. Same thing,

  2266. if you're in

  2267. the middle of

  2268. a storm,

  2269. if you're in

  2270. a boat,

  2271. you know,

  2272. the spray is

  2273. holding fast

  2274. with the

  2275. sailors'

  2276. phrase,

  2277. you know?

  2278. Hold fast!

  2279. You know,

  2280. if you're in

  2281. a storm,

  2282. okay?

  2283. Grab the

  2284. mast,

  2285. captain goes

  2286. to the

  2287. helm,

  2288. right?

  2289. We have

  2290. to hold

  2291. fast to

  2292. Jesus,

  2293. because if

  2294. we lose

  2295. him,

  2296. we lose

  2297. everything,

  2298. you know?

  2299. Holding fast to

  2300. the word of

  2301. life,

  2302. holding fast to

  2303. Jesus,

  2304. so that in the

  2305. last day,

  2306. the day of

  2307. Christ,

  2308. Paul says

  2309. that I may be

  2310. proud of you,

  2311. right?

  2312. that I may

  2313. know that it

  2314. didn't run

  2315. in vain.

  2316. If we

  2317. exhort each

  2318. other to

  2319. hold fast

  2320. to Jesus,

  2321. sometimes we

  2322. need a little

  2323. bit more

  2324. teaching on

  2325. what that

  2326. looks like,

  2327. you know?

  2328. Holding fast

  2329. to Jesus,

  2330. holding fast

  2331. to God

  2332. as our

  2333. refuge,

  2334. right?

  2335. But if we

  2336. exhort each

  2337. other to

  2338. hold fast

  2339. to Christ,

  2340. that is

  2341. a word

  2342. that in

  2343. the last

  2344. day will

  2345. not be

  2346. burned

  2347. up,

  2348. right?

  2349. Verse 17

  2350. says,

  2351. even if I

  2352. am to be

  2353. poured out

  2354. as a

  2355. drink

  2356. offering

  2357. upon the

  2358. sacrificial

  2359. offering of

  2360. your faith,

  2361. I am glad

  2362. and rejoice

  2363. with you

  2364. all.

  2365. Likewise,

  2366. you also

  2367. should be

  2368. glad and

  2369. rejoice with

  2370. me.

  2371. This last

  2372. part,

  2373. um,

  2374. I

  2375. you know,

  2376. I talked

  2377. in the

  2378. beginning

  2379. just a

  2380. little bit

  2381. about like

  2382. the dynamic

  2383. of leadership

  2384. nowadays

  2385. and,

  2386. uh,

  2387. how we

  2388. should really

  2389. look to the

  2390. scriptures

  2391. for what

  2392. godly

  2393. leadership

  2394. looks like.

  2395. This is,

  2396. this is it,

  2397. you know?

  2398. Pretty much

  2399. summed up

  2400. in,

  2401. in Paul's

  2402. fatherly

  2403. heart,

  2404. his fatherly

  2405. authority,

  2406. apostolic

  2407. authority,

  2408. he says,

  2409. even,

  2410. even if

  2411. I'm to be

  2412. poured out

  2413. as a

  2414. sacrificial

  2415. offering

  2416. of your

  2417. faith,

  2418. I'm glad

  2419. about it.

  2420. You know?

  2421. Not wasted

  2422. at all.

  2423. You know?

  2424. There's many

  2425. times where

  2426. we're,

  2427. we kind of

  2428. live our

  2429. lives in

  2430. terms of

  2431. like assessing

  2432. like what's

  2433. worthy of

  2434. sacrifice,

  2435. what's not,

  2436. should I be

  2437. poured out,

  2438. should I be

  2439. poured out,

  2440. you know,

  2441. maybe something

  2442. like that.

  2443. uh,

  2444. but Paul's

  2445. like,

  2446. if your

  2447. faith is

  2448. worthy of

  2449. me dying

  2450. for,

  2451. then I

  2452. would be

  2453. glad to

  2454. do that.

  2455. You know?

  2456. That's

  2457. incredible.

  2458. You know?

  2459. That bears

  2460. the image

  2461. of Jesus

  2462. as he

  2463. just laid

  2464. out,

  2465. who emptied

  2466. himself,

  2467. it says.

  2468. Didn't hold

  2469. anything back.

  2470. Paul says,

  2471. I'm glad to

  2472. do that.

  2473. You know?

  2474. Doug Wilson

  2475. defines

  2476. true masculinity

  2477. as the

  2478. sacrificial

  2479. responsibility

  2480. or the

  2481. glad

  2482. assumption

  2483. of

  2484. sacrificial

  2485. responsibility.

  2486. I think

  2487. that's

  2488. great

  2489. because

  2490. it's

  2491. not just

  2492. sacrifice,

  2493. right?

  2494. It's

  2495. done gladly,

  2496. right?

  2497. It's an

  2498. awareness that

  2499. the sacrifice

  2500. is totally

  2501. worth it,

  2502. right?

  2503. That it

  2504. pays way

  2505. later on.

  2506. And

  2507. we even

  2508. see that

  2509. with Jesus.

  2510. Although he

  2511. was anxious

  2512. in the

  2513. garden,

  2514. you know,

  2515. sweating tears

  2516. of blood.

  2517. The scriptures

  2518. say that it

  2519. was for the

  2520. joy set

  2521. before him

  2522. that you

  2523. endured,

  2524. right?

  2525. Do we have

  2526. that same,

  2527. do we share

  2528. in that same

  2529. vision of

  2530. Paul that

  2531. we're like,

  2532. you know what,

  2533. I'm going to

  2534. spend myself

  2535. for you,

  2536. I'm going to

  2537. spend myself

  2538. for you,

  2539. I'm going to

  2540. spend myself

  2541. for you,

  2542. not under

  2543. just anything,

  2544. but if it's

  2545. unto your

  2546. faith,

  2547. Paul's like,

  2548. I'll gladly be

  2549. poured out,

  2550. right?

  2551. we're

  2552. wrapping up

  2553. dividends

  2554. that will

  2555. go much

  2556. farther

  2557. when we

  2558. sacrifice

  2559. for God

  2560. for each

  2561. other's

  2562. faith,

  2563. right?

  2564. Spurring

  2565. each other

  2566. on to run

  2567. the race.

  2568. So Paul

  2569. says,

  2570. even if I'm

  2571. to be

  2572. poured out,

  2573. I'm glad

  2574. to do so.

  2575. But he's

  2576. not the only

  2577. one that's

  2578. glad,

  2579. he's like,

  2580. you guys

  2581. should also

  2582. rejoice with

  2583. me.

  2584. You should

  2585. be glad

  2586. with me.

  2587. Catch this

  2588. vision that

  2589. I'm trying

  2590. to convey

  2591. to you

  2592. that this

  2593. is it,

  2594. sacrificial

  2595. giving of

  2596. ourselves,

  2597. spending

  2598. the time

  2599. that seems

  2600. on the

  2601. surface

  2602. to not

  2603. be worth

  2604. it,

  2605. but knowing

  2606. that in

  2607. the end

  2608. it will

  2609. reach

  2610. eternal

  2611. reward,

  2612. right?

  2613. He's like,

  2614. catch this

  2615. vision with

  2616. me,

  2617. guys.

  2618. He's like,

  2619. I'm glad

  2620. about it.

  2621. You

  2622. likewise,

  2623. verse 18,

  2624. you likewise

  2625. also should

  2626. be glad

  2627. and rejoice

  2628. with me.

  2629. Okay?

  2630. Do we have

  2631. that attitude,

  2632. Christ church,

  2633. for one

  2634. another?

  2635. Do we have

  2636. the attitude

  2637. of glad,

  2638. sacrificial

  2639. responsibility?

  2640. Do we have

  2641. that towards

  2642. each other's

  2643. faith?

  2644. You know,

  2645. there's a lot

  2646. of things

  2647. in your life

  2648. that people

  2649. are going

  2650. to,

  2651. there's a lot

  2652. of needs

  2653. and we

  2654. can meet

  2655. needs,

  2656. but is it

  2657. unto our

  2658. faith,

  2659. right?

  2660. Is it

  2661. unto our

  2662. love for

  2663. God,

  2664. you know?

  2665. Helping

  2666. each other

  2667. to see,

  2668. like,

  2669. it's our

  2670. joy to

  2671. sacrifice

  2672. for one

  2673. another.

  2674. It's Paul's

  2675. joy here.

  2676. mix this

  2677. up here.

  2678. I'm almost

  2679. wrapped up

  2680. here.

  2681. A couple

  2682. more,

  2683. more things

  2684. before I

  2685. close.

  2686. I'm not,

  2687. like,

  2688. really good

  2689. at this.

  2690. I'm not

  2691. really good

  2692. at that.

  2693. I'm tempted

  2694. to grumble,

  2695. I'm tempted

  2696. to complain.

  2697. I imagine

  2698. most of

  2699. you share

  2700. the same

  2701. temptation.

  2702. And maybe

  2703. even Paul

  2704. was tempted

  2705. to grumble

  2706. and complain

  2707. at times,

  2708. but that

  2709. doesn't

  2710. negate the

  2711. exhortation.

  2712. It actually

  2713. illuminates it.

  2714. It shows

  2715. us that we

  2716. need God.

  2717. We need

  2718. an awareness

  2719. of God

  2720. to be

  2721. lights in

  2722. the world.

  2723. And I

  2724. think one

  2725. key thing

  2726. here is

  2727. that do

  2728. we not

  2729. just know,

  2730. but do we

  2731. regularly

  2732. meditate on

  2733. the knowledge

  2734. of the

  2735. God who

  2736. dwells in

  2737. us?

  2738. Okay?

  2739. I know

  2740. for certain

  2741. that I

  2742. don't enough.

  2743. Okay?

  2744. I know

  2745. that I

  2746. am tempted

  2747. to forget

  2748. the Lord.

  2749. But the

  2750. thing that

  2751. draws me

  2752. back is

  2753. the same

  2754. God,

  2755. you know,

  2756. that died.

  2757. Right?

  2758. That he's

  2759. the one

  2760. who will

  2761. produce these

  2762. things in

  2763. us.

  2764. And I

  2765. would just

  2766. exhort us,

  2767. like Paul is

  2768. saying,

  2769. fear and

  2770. tremble before

  2771. God because

  2772. he lives in

  2773. you.

  2774. Right?

  2775. he's at

  2776. work in

  2777. you,

  2778. both to

  2779. will and

  2780. to work

  2781. for his

  2782. good pleasure.

  2783. But meditate

  2784. on him.

  2785. Meditate on

  2786. that God.

  2787. Worship him.

  2788. You know?

  2789. Saturate

  2790. yourself with

  2791. the enjoyment

  2792. of who he

  2793. actually is,

  2794. not who he

  2795. is not.

  2796. Right?

  2797. Meditate on

  2798. that.

  2799. I'm going

  2800. to close

  2801. with a

  2802. scripture.

  2803. In 2

  2804. Corinthians

  2805. 13,

  2806. really short

  2807. scripture here,

  2808. he says,

  2809. Paul is

  2810. saying,

  2811. he is not

  2812. weak in

  2813. dealing with

  2814. you.

  2815. Speaking of

  2816. God,

  2817. God is not

  2818. weak in

  2819. dealing with

  2820. you,

  2821. but is

  2822. powerful among

  2823. you.

  2824. For he was

  2825. crucified in

  2826. weakness,

  2827. but lives

  2828. by the

  2829. power of

  2830. God.

  2831. For us

  2832. also,

  2833. Christ's

  2834. church,

  2835. he is not

  2836. weak in

  2837. dealing with

  2838. us.

  2839. Okay?

  2840. But he

  2841. lives by

  2842. the power

  2843. of God

  2844. in us.

  2845. Although we

  2846. are weak

  2847. in the

  2848. body,

  2849. Christ is

  2850. strong in

  2851. us.

  2852. Okay?

  2853. Let us

  2854. go on

  2855. evangelizing

  2856. the world

  2857. by putting

  2858. away our

  2859. disputes,

  2860. our

  2861. grumblings,

  2862. our

  2863. God

  2864. and

  2865. holding

  2866. fast.

  2867. Jesus,

  2868. the

  2869. word of

  2870. life.

  2871. That we

  2872. might

  2873. actually be

  2874. blameless

  2875. in a

  2876. world that

  2877. is twisted

  2878. and full

  2879. of blame

  2880. and full

  2881. of a

  2882. blame that

  2883. wants to

  2884. be used.

  2885. People are

  2886. so eager

  2887. to blame.

  2888. Everything is

  2889. just a big

  2890. blame game.

  2891. right?

  2892. In Christ

  2893. Jesus,

  2894. though,

  2895. Jesus Christ

  2896. was blamed

  2897. for us.

  2898. Right?

  2899. He took

  2900. the penalty

  2901. of our

  2902. sin that

  2903. should have

  2904. come to

  2905. us.

  2906. Right?

  2907. So we

  2908. can live

  2909. in a

  2910. world now

  2911. free from

  2912. the constraints

  2913. and the

  2914. burdens of

  2915. sin and the

  2916. bondage of

  2917. sin.

  2918. So don't

  2919. forget,

  2920. God is not

  2921. weak in

  2922. dealing with

  2923. us,

  2924. but he

  2925. is powerful

  2926. among us.
