  1. I'm going to talk to you today about combating the constant friction of evil suspicions.

  2. ! Combating the constant friction of evil suspicions.

  3. This phrase, constant friction of evil suspicions, this is from 1 Timothy 6, verses 4-5.

    1 Timothy 6:4–5

  4. In 1 Timothy 6, 4-5, Paul warns Timothy about those who have an unhealthy craving for controversy

  5. and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction.

  6. I've been doing a lot of thinking and praying about Christchurch this last week,

  7. and I've overall been encouraged by the last 14 months in how far we've come,

  8. what God has established for us as a church.

  9. But as I look back on the last 14 months, I think there's been one nagging sin

  10. that has been kind of tripping us up since day one.

  11. And I've been praying into that, thinking into that, and especially in seeing this verse,

  12. I think God is shedding light on it.

  13. I think it's evil suspicions. Evil suspicions.

  14. What I mean by that is being suspicious of people.

  15. What I'm not talking about is just actually seeing something outright and blatant.

  16. I'm talking about when you don't see, but you're not giving people the benefit of the doubt.

  17. You're suspicious of them.

  18. You're not trusting that motives or actions are right.

  19. Here's some examples of what I mean that people have been suspicious of.

  20. So, first one would be just general motives.

  21. Okay?

  22. Just assuming that, oh, their motives are bad.

  23. What they're doing is motivated out of things that aren't good, that aren't godly.

  24. Okay?

  25. Another thing that people might be suspicious of is whether or not people are sincere or genuine.

  26. Okay?

  27. Like, you know, I'm not really convinced that that's sincere.

  28. I think they're being fake.

  29. I think they don't really mean that.

  30. They don't really mean what they said.

  31. They don't really mean what they're doing.

  32. So, doubting, being suspicious of whether people are sincere or genuine.

  33. Another one is being suspicious of whether people are loving.

  34. Okay?

  35. Like, I don't really know if they're doing this because they love me, or I don't really know if these people do love me.

  36. I'm really doubting that this person loves me.

  37. I kind of feel like I'm a project.

  38. I kind of feel like they're just kind of doing what they're doing.

  39. But I don't really know.

  40. I'm pretty suspicious that what they're doing is loving towards me, that they really love me.

  41. Okay?

  42. Some people have maybe been suspicious about how we do partnership or membership at our church.

  43. Some people have been suspicious about how we bring in new people into our church.

  44. Some have been suspicious of who's leading now, myself or current lead partners or people who have been lead partners.

  45. Some are suspicious of possible future leaders and how they will lead.

  46. Okay?

  47. And there's been comments made and things said about maybe suspicion about who could potentially be leading in the future and how they're going to lead.

  48. There's been suspicion about church planting methods or apostolicity.

  49. So how apostles are supposed to function and how that even works.

  50. Suspicion about ministry ambition.

  51. That, oh, really, this is just all about, it's just this kind of ministry ambitious machine.

  52. Some people have been ambitious, or I mean, sorry, have been suspicious of whether you belong and suspicious of others' attempts to include you.

  53. Maybe you're thinking, you know, I don't even know if I really belong here.

  54. And I'm suspicious of whether people really want me here.

  55. I'm suspicious of whether people even are really trying to include me.

  56. Okay?

  57. Maybe you've been suspicious of that.

  58. Maybe you've been suspicious of your husband or your wife.

  59. Maybe you've been suspicious of...

  60. Okay, that word is hard to say.

  61. I'm going to keep screwing it up.

  62. Maybe you've been suspicious of preaching motives or topics that have been covered.

  63. Maybe you're suspicious about this preaching topic.

  64. Maybe you've been suspicious about men being misogynistic or domineering towards women.

  65. Or maybe you've been suspicious of women being feministic or usurpatious towards men.

  66. Okay?

  67. So there's all kinds of ways that we can be suspicious of one another.

  68. Not giving each other the benefit of the doubt, but, hmm, I don't know about this person.

  69. I don't know about their motives or what they're thinking.

  70. Okay?

  71. But I think this is really important.

  72. And I think it's really important for the life of Christchurch.

  73. I will go as far as to say this could be the most important sermon I've given at Christchurch so far.

  74. Because evil suspicions and the frictions that result from them could have the power to destroy us from the inside out.

  75. Okay?

  76. So let me give you a couple disclaimers.

  77. Number one, I am not speaking to one person or two people or any specific people.

  78. I'm speaking to everyone, including myself.

  79. Okay?

  80. Including myself and my family.

  81. Okay?

  82. In fact, I've been convicted lately.

  83. Just, you know, we just, Gene and I just had our 26-year wedding anniversary.

  84. And, you know, whenever you do that, you kind of take inventory of your own marriage and your own relationship, as one does on those days.

  85. And one of the things that I was thinking of and convicted of, and we were both convicted of, is over time how even you can become suspicious of each other in your marriage.

  86. Mistrusting.

  87. Not giving the other person the benefit of the doubt.

  88. Thinking that the reason, you know, your spouse is bringing something up is for some nefarious reason or purpose or selfish reason.

  89. And I think Gene and I really realized that that's crept in too much in our marriage.

  90. Where there's this unhealthy suspicion of each other.

  91. This mistrust.

  92. And we were really convicted of that.

  93. And that needs to stop in our marriage.

  94. And I know that, I guarantee that affects our kids as well in how they see things.

  95. And we don't want to have a family that is defaulting to suspicion.

  96. Okay?

  97. We don't want to have a family that's defaulting to suspicion.

  98. So that's the first thing.

  99. Disclaimer.

  100. Talking to everybody.

  101. Okay?

  102. Including myself.

  103. Okay, number two.

  104. What I am not saying.

  105. I am not saying that we should, I am not saying that we should be undiscerning.

  106. Okay?

  107. To be undiscerning is to make the opposite error of evil suspicions.

  108. Okay?

  109. How we discern and what we do with it is very important.

  110. Okay?

  111. How we discern and what we do with it is very important.

  112. So please hear me on that.

  113. Discernment is a big deal.

  114. Very important.

  115. Okay?

  116. So I want to get a few people I want to read from that I think are helpful on this.

  117. But Greg Morse, who's one of the writers on Desiring God, says this.

  118. Cynicism and suspicion, I know firsthand, crawl into our minds and make us traitors to ourselves.

  119. Dangers to our families and toxins to our church.

  120. Our suspicions can make us strike at those dearest to us.

  121. This is why this sometimes happens in a marriage, right?

  122. Of all people, you wouldn't want to be antagonistic towards a spouse.

  123. But these suspicions can make us strike at those dearest to us.

  124. They contain a self-fulfilling prophecy.

  125. The more we suspect, the more reasons we find to suspect.

  126. The more we distrust, the more reasons we find to distrust.

  127. Every creak of the floor becomes a burglar.

  128. Does that make sense?

  129. So you start hearing those things and watching those things.

  130. All of a sudden, everything becomes a, oh, yep, see, that's a confirmation of that.

  131. That's, you know, becomes almost confirmation bias.

  132. Every creak of the floor becomes a burglar.

  133. He goes on, he says,

  134. Thinking the worst of our loved ones or our neighbors is unjust and often unreliable.

  135. And it passes too easily unnoticed.

  136. Yet if our sins have been unimaginably forgiven by God, and in Christ they have been,

  137. then we have been set free to lay down our subtle suspicions, our default distrust,

  138. and to assume the best of others.

  139. That phrase, default distrust, that's a convicting one.

  140. Do you have any, is your default distrust or is your default love?

  141. We'll look at that in a second.

  142. Now, where sin is apparent, things may change,

  143. but suspicion would have us confront possible sins with the same conviction and severity as obvious ones.

  144. Okay?

  145. Suspicion would have us confront possible sins with the same conviction and severity as obvious ones.

  146. And this shouldn't be.

  147. Okay?

  148. Obvious ones should definitely be confronted.

  149. But possible ones should be treated differently.

  150. Okay?

  151. We really have been freed by Christ to hope the best,

  152. to assume the best of others' intentions,

  153. and to leave the secret sins of others to their creator.

  154. This is the love that covers a multitude of sins, actual or imagined.

  155. This is that glory of a godly person who passes over affronts.

  156. As Proverbs 19.11 says,

  157. Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.

  158. Okay?

  159. I also was reading, Charles Spurgeon has a chapter on this in his book, Letters to My Students.

  160. And the chapter is called The Blind Eye and the Deaf Ear.

  161. I want to read a couple quotes from that that I thought were really good and helpful on this topic.

  162. He says,

  163. Many a friend has been transformed into an enemy by being suspected.

  164. And he says,

  165. It would be better to be deceived a hundred times than to live a life of suspicion.

  166. Think about that one for a second.

  167. Maybe you're thinking,

  168. No, I don't know about that.

  169. But think about that.

  170. It would be better to be deceived a hundred times than to live a life of suspicion.

  171. I agree with that phrase,

  172. and I think the reason he's saying that is because living a life of suspicion is no way to live.

  173. Plus, it's also devoid of God.

  174. It makes us think that we're the ones who have to control everything and make sure of everything,

  175. rather than trusting God, and that we do our part, he does his part.

  176. But, you know, I would rather be deceived a hundred times than to live a life of suspicion,

  177. because to live a life of suspicion is no real life at all.

  178. He says,

  179. Suspicion is a moral evil, and it injures the character of the man who harbors it.

  180. He says,

  181. Learn to disbelieve those who have no faith in their brethren.

  182. Suspect those who would lead you to suspect others.

  183. Okay?

  184. I've been thinking long and hard about what it is that makes some relationships feel real close,

  185. and then other relationships, real close, not just close, but like comfortable, safe,

  186. and why others feel distant, uncomfortable, and unsettling.

  187. And I believe it's the difference between suspicion and giving people the benefit of the doubt.

  188. Like, if I think of all the people who feel most closest to me,

  189. those are people who give me the benefit of the doubt.

  190. Like, they're not, their default isn't distrust.

  191. Their default is, hey, I'm going to give this person the benefit of the doubt.

  192. And I feel more free to be open with those people.

  193. I feel more myself around those people.

  194. I feel more relaxed around those people.

  195. The people that are, you know, harder to be close to,

  196. that feel more distant,

  197. are people who I feel are always kind of checking me out.

  198. Like, what about this guy?

  199. You know, kind of the default distrust.

  200. Like, I don't know if I can be myself.

  201. That's not what you want,

  202. and that is not what we would ever want in a church culture.

  203. Okay?

  204. We want people who do 1 Corinthians chapter 13, verse 7.

    1 Corinthians 13:7

  205. This is that love chapter that describes what love is like.

  206. And at the end of the list of all the things, in verse 7,

  207. he says, love bears all things, believes all things,

  208. hopes all things, and endures all things.

  209. Okay?

  210. Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

  211. That's the opposite of suspicion.

  212. That's the opposite.

  213. Okay?

  214. Four different things.

  215. Love bears all things.

  216. Okay?

  217. Love doesn't say, oh, because this is hard,

  218. that absolutely means that there's definitely something wrong here with the other person.

  219. It could be us.

  220. It could be nothing.

  221. It could just be two personalities that are hard to get, you know, to get along with.

  222. Right?

  223. But love bears all things.

  224. It bears all things.

  225. Love believes all things.

  226. Essentially saying like, I'm going to believe the, love believes the best of the other person.

  227. It doesn't assume the worst.

  228. It doesn't assume bad motives.

  229. It doesn't assume, oh, that must be because of this.

  230. Now, if, you know, if, it's like with your, if a kid, if your kid hauls up and hits your, the other, your other kid.

  231. It's like, it's okay to say, hey, don't hit your brother or sister.

  232. It's like, well, you're being awfully suspicious of me.

  233. It's like, no, listen, I don't know your motives, but I know your behavior.

  234. And that was wrong.

  235. Like, you can't hit somebody.

  236. Right?

  237. So, I'm not, again, hear what I'm saying, not what I'm not saying.

  238. I'm talking about when you're, there are certain things that are super obvious.

  239. You haul off and just hit someone and hurt someone.

  240. It's like, that's wrong.

  241. Don't do that.

  242. You say something really mean to someone.

  243. That's wrong.

  244. Right?

  245. You, you, you curse someone or slander someone.

  246. That's wrong.

  247. You know, there's certain things that are very obviously wrong.

  248. All right?

  249. But then there's things where you're not necessarily sure.

  250. Or maybe you have an inclination or an impression or a thought about them.

  251. Love believes all things.

  252. It says, you know what?

  253. I'm going to hope the best for them.

  254. I'm going to hope the best for them.

  255. Love hopes all things.

  256. Okay?

  257. Hopes what?

  258. Hopes the best.

  259. And love endures all things.

  260. We might say, well, man, I don't know.

  261. This is probably, this is probably something bad.

  262. You know?

  263. It's got to be something bad.

  264. It's like, but I don't know for sure because it hasn't manifested in some specific fruit I confront.

  265. But I got a really good hankering that it is.

  266. Well, in that instance, you got to endure.

  267. You got to keep praying and asking the Lord that if there's sin there, that it will be exposed.

  268. That it will be brought to the surface.

  269. And 1 Timothy 5.24 says, some sins go before us and some sins trail behind.

  270. But at the end of the day, what that verse is saying is, they're always going to show up.

  271. But they don't always show up when we want them to.

  272. We can inspect and be the detective and think we got it all figured out.

  273. Yep, it's definitely there.

  274. But I don't really have any hard evidence.

  275. But I know it's there.

  276. You got to endure and trust.

  277. And during that time, you're enduring.

  278. Is it enduring with the default mistrust?

  279. It's enduring with the other things.

  280. Bearing things, believing all things, and hoping all things.

  281. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

  282. Let me ask you the question in light of that verse.

  283. Are you loving?

  284. Are you loving people in this church?

  285. Are you loving people in your family?

  286. Are you loving everyone in this church?

  287. Not just most of them.

  288. What about that person that's hard to love?

  289. Are you loving them in the sense that you are bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things, and enduring all things?

  290. You're hoping the best.

  291. You're giving them the benefit of the doubt.

  292. You're believing the best.

  293. You're praying for them if you are concerned for them.

  294. Are you doing that?

  295. And again, don't think you're so great.

  296. If you're able to do that with most everybody,

  297. except for one or two or whatever, maybe.

  298. Because that's the one where it really counts.

  299. That's the one that's really telling, hey, are you loving?

  300. Are you able to love that person and hope the best for them?

  301. I'm telling you, when we create an atmosphere of love, Bible-defined love, not some weird worldly love,

  302. but Bible-defined love, where we bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, and endure all things,

  303. that's the kind of love that is conducive for real-life open-heartedness,

  304. where people can be themselves,

  305. not worrying about people judging them or trying to fix them in an unhealthy way,

  306. but where people can be family with one another.

  307. And that's what we want.

  308. That's what we need.

  309. That's important.

  310. So I want us to think about that.

  311. I want us to think about that verse and ask that question.

  312. That's a convicting verse.

  313. It's so easy to have our default be to mistrust.

  314. Okay?

  315. So let's look at how we judge.

  316. Tom Schmidt, pastor, writes,

  317. Many of us have chosen the pleasure of evil suspicions above the pleasure of knowing Christ.

  318. An evil suspicion is when we believe something wicked about someone,

  319. someone else, based on speculation rather than evidence.

  320. Okay?

  321. Let me read that again.

  322. An evil suspicion is when we believe something wicked about someone

  323. based on speculation rather than evidence.

  324. Okay?

  325. To believe the worst in someone,

  326. to assume they are against you,

  327. to assume they have committed some perverse act,

  328. to assume they are acting out of evil motives, etc.,

  329. without evidence produces a prideful pleasure

  330. and an idolatrous security in our hearts.

  331. The pleasure we experience in this sin

  332. comes from believing that we have a superior knowledge

  333. or awareness of a situation.

  334. Okay?

  335. That's really important.

  336. Let me read that again.

  337. The pleasure we experience in this sin

  338. comes from believing that we have a superior knowledge

  339. or awareness of a situation

  340. which others are blind to.

  341. Kind of like this exclusive insight or information.

  342. And our assessment of what is happening

  343. is more righteous than the person engaging in the act.

  344. The pleasure is in the pride.

  345. The pleasure is in the pride.

  346. The security we receive comes from trusting

  347. in our assessment of the situation

  348. above resting in and submitting to God.

  349. This is idolatry.

  350. That is a super important point.

  351. Okay?

  352. The security we receive comes from trusting

  353. in our assessment of the situation

  354. above resting in and submitting to God.

  355. And this is idolatry.

  356. What he's saying there is that

  357. we oftentimes,

  358. there's this insidious, subtle pleasure

  359. with just assessing people.

  360. With having accurate knowledge of where people are at

  361. or what we think is accurate knowledge.

  362. And then our, like,

  363. almost feeling the need to control

  364. or be God in that situation

  365. to make sure that people see things,

  366. understand things,

  367. or experience our revelation of what we're seeing.

  368. And the pleasure is in the pride

  369. because what we're not doing is resting in

  370. and submitting to God.

  371. And that's idolatry.

  372. Can we trust God in our spouses,

  373. in our children,

  374. in the people in our church?

  375. Can we trust God

  376. to do the work that he does so good,

  377. to convict people of sin,

  378. to bring sin to the surface?

  379. Can we trust God,

  380. who only knows their hearts, not us,

  381. to do heart surgery?

  382. Can we trust the word of God

  383. to do what only the word of God can do?

  384. Hebrews 4, 12,

  385. it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

  386. Will we trust God's word,

  387. God's authority,

  388. God's intervention,

  389. God's heart towards people

  390. to do the work

  391. and to have the right view of things?

  392. Or do we take pleasure over and above

  393. God himself and resting in him,

  394. the pleasure that comes from resting in him,

  395. do we find pleasure

  396. in our having everything figured out?

  397. That's a dangerous thing.

  398. Our pursuit of evil suspicions

  399. is folly and rebellion against our creator,

  400. who calls us to take our neighbor's words

  401. at face value,

  402. love believes all things,

  403. and commands us to reject hypocritical,

  404. self-righteous judgments,

  405. like in Matthew 7.

  406. In other words,

  407. you can't judge people's hearts.

  408. Okay?

  409. You can't judge people's hearts.

  410. Why?

  411. Because you don't know people's hearts.

  412. Only God knows people's hearts.

  413. You can judge their fruit,

  414. and I would say you should.

  415. I would say you have a responsibility to,

  416. and we'll look at that in a second.

  417. But you can't judge people's hearts

  418. because you can never know someone's heart.

  419. Now, you can ask people about their hearts

  420. based on fruit,

  421. maybe do a little digging.

  422. Proverbs says that the heart is a deep well,

  423. and a man of understanding

  424. is able to draw things out of it.

  425. Okay?

  426. And so that's a good thing to do,

  427. but you have to be very careful in that.

  428. It takes a man of understanding.

  429. It's not saying,

  430. well, I know what's in your heart.

  431. It's saying,

  432. I know what fruit is in your life,

  433. and because of this fruit,

  434. maybe I'll ask some probing questions.

  435. But I'm not going to ask them

  436. in a way that I am assuming the worst of you.

  437. I'm going to ask them in a way

  438. that I'm loving you,

  439. and I'm assuming the best.

  440. But I'm considering that some of these things

  441. could possibly be there.

  442. Okay?

  443. Okay?

  444. So,

  445. Luke 6 talks about this.

  446. Luke 6, 37 to 45.

  447. It says,

  448. Judge not,

  449. and you will not be judged.

  450. So again,

  451. some of you might say,

  452. yeah, I thought we're not supposed to judge.

  453. The Bible says it right there.

  454. Right?

  455. Judge not,

  456. and you will not be judged.

  457. You know,

  458. don't judge me, bro.

  459. Condemn not,

  460. and you will not be condemned.

  461. Forgive,

  462. and you will be forgiven.

  463. Give,

  464. and it will be given to you.

  465. Good measure,

  466. pressed down,

  467. shaken together,

  468. running over,

  469. will be put into your lap.

  470. For with the measure you use,

  471. it will be measured back to you.

  472. He also told them a parable.

  473. Can a blind man lead a blind man?

  474. Will they not both fall into a pit?

  475. A disciple is not above his teacher,

  476. but everyone when he is fully trained

  477. will be like his teacher.

  478. Why do you see the speck

  479. that is in your brother's eye,

  480. but do not notice the log

  481. that is in your own eye?

  482. How can you say to your brother,

  483. Brother,

  484. let me take out the speck

  485. that is in your eye,

  486. when you yourself

  487. do not see the log

  488. that is in your own eye?

  489. You hypocrite.

  490. First,

  491. take the log out of your own eye,

  492. and then you will see clearly

  493. to take out the speck

  494. that is in your brother's eye.

  495. So he's clearly not,

  496. if you just take the first verse

  497. and say judge not,

  498. you'd say,

  499. yeah man,

  500. are you talking about

  501. you're not supposed to judge?

  502. You're not supposed to judge,

  503. but that's just taking that verse

  504. out of context.

  505. When he reads the rest of it,

  506. he's saying,

  507. no,

  508. you're to judge,

  509. but you should be careful

  510. how you judge.

  511. You should judge a certain way.

  512. First of all,

  513. knowing that whatever way

  514. you judge,

  515. whatever measure you use

  516. is going to be measured

  517. back to you.

  518. You know,

  519. in other words,

  520. I think a singer once said,

  521. the mercy you don't give

  522. is the mercy you don't get.

  523. He said the same measure,

  524. press down,

  525. and you know,

  526. prosperity preachers

  527. love to take this verse

  528. out of context

  529. and say,

  530. yeah man,

  531. it's about giving.

  532. You just give,

  533. and then it just pours back on you.

  534. And it's like,

  535. no,

  536. that's not about giving.

  537. It's about judgment

  538. and mercy,

  539. which is what they need.

  540. Ironically.

  541. It's like,

  542. actually,

  543. we should be judging

  544. your false teaching.

  545. Okay,

  546. this is a verse

  547. that Jesus is saying.

  548. He's saying,

  549. don't judge in an unrighteous way.

  550. Don't judge in an unhealthy way.

  551. When you judge,

  552. first of all,

  553. realize,

  554. whatever way you use,

  555. hey,

  556. that's how it's going to be used on you,

  557. so be careful.

  558. Okay?

  559. The mercy you don't give

  560. is the most mercy you don't get.

  561. And then he tells us

  562. how to actually judge the right way.

  563. He's saying,

  564. how can you say to your brother,

  565. brother,

  566. let me take out the speck

  567. that is in your eye

  568. when you yourself

  569. do not see the log

  570. that is in your own eye?

  571. You hypocrite.

  572. First take the log

  573. out of your own eye,

  574. and then you will see clearly

  575. to take out the speck

  576. that is in your brother's eye.

  577. So he's saying,

  578. this is how you judge.

  579. In order to judge,

  580. you have to be able to see.

  581. Like,

  582. judgment is a certain level of seeing.

  583. So to judge well,

  584. to judge rightly,

  585. you have to see.

  586. You can't see

  587. when a log is sticking

  588. out of your eye.

  589. Right?

  590. So he's saying,

  591. take that out first,

  592. examine yourself first,

  593. make sure you're not

  594. in pride,

  595. arrogance,

  596. exulting in your revelation

  597. or your insight into someone

  598. and your,

  599. you know,

  600. evaluation of them.

  601. Okay?

  602. Take your,

  603. and then take a good look

  604. at yourself,

  605. say,

  606. hey,

  607. how are you doing here,

  608. bro?

  609. Remove that log,

  610. and then now,

  611. you can see clearly

  612. to see the speck

  613. and to take it out.

  614. And he's saying you should,

  615. and that's judgment.

  616. Judgment is saying,

  617. hey,

  618. you got a speck in your eye.

  619. But that's not loving.

  620. Like,

  621. if you saw that I had a speck

  622. in my eye,

  623. and you saw that my eye

  624. was watering,

  625. and it was all red,

  626. but you could see the speck,

  627. you'd say,

  628. hold on,

  629. let me just,

  630. I'm not going to be like,

  631. bro,

  632. don't judge me.

  633. Like,

  634. how do you know

  635. I have a speck in my eye?

  636. It's like,

  637. I'm trying to help you.

  638. Like,

  639. your eye is clearly,

  640. like,

  641. infected.

  642. Can I just,

  643. yeah,

  644. and then take the speck out,

  645. and you'd say,

  646. oh,

  647. maybe you do love me.

  648. Yes,

  649. that is love.

  650. Real righteous judgment

  651. is actually love.

  652. Taking speck out of people's eyes

  653. is loving,

  654. because those specks

  655. are causing discomfort and harm.

  656. Now,

  657. again,

  658. read this whole thing in context.

  659. So we know,

  660. the context of judge not

  661. is in the context of

  662. take the log out of your eye,

  663. but there's still more context here.

  664. After he says,

  665. you will see clearly

  666. to take out the speck

  667. that is in your brother eye,

  668. your brother's eye,

  669. the very next verse says,

  670. for no good,

  671. and it says for,

  672. so it's connecting these two together.

  673. So don't separate this judgment

  674. from this next verse,

  675. because it says for.

  676. So put them together.

  677. Verse 43,

  678. this is Luke 6,

  679. 43.

  680. For no good tree

  681. bears bad fruit,

  682. nor again does a bad tree

  683. bear good fruit,

  684. for each tree

  685. is known by its own fruit.

  686. Okay?

  687. For figs are not gathered

  688. from thorn bushes,

  689. nor are grapes picked

  690. from a bramble bush.

  691. The good person

  692. out of the good treasure

  693. of his heart

  694. produces good,

  695. and the evil person

  696. out of the evil treasure

  697. produces evil.

  698. For out of the abundance

  699. of the heart,

  700. his mouth speaks.

  701. So you can't judge the heart,

  702. but you can judge

  703. what comes out of the mouth.

  704. You can judge the fruit,

  705. and you should,

  706. and you should.

  707. Okay?

  708. So,

  709. not only is he telling us

  710. how to judge,

  711. he's telling us

  712. what to judge.

  713. You're not judging

  714. a person's heart,

  715. you're judging

  716. the fruit in their life.

  717. If you can't see fruit,

  718. but you have an inclination

  719. that something's there,

  720. you need to,

  721. you need to wait.

  722. You need to pray.

  723. You need to trust God,

  724. and ask God

  725. and just say,

  726. God,

  727. is there something here?

  728. If there is,

  729. bring it to the surface

  730. and you trust.

  731. And in the meantime,

  732. you give them

  733. the benefit of the doubt.

  734. It's like,

  735. how can I give them

  736. the benefit of the doubt

  737. if I have this,

  738. I feel like I see this,

  739. I discern this.

  740. It's like,

  741. you can't judge your heart.

  742. You may be right.

  743. You may be right,

  744. but you have to be patient.

  745. You have to be loving.

  746. You have to hope the best.

  747. And you have to let God

  748. do his job

  749. and you do yours.

  750. And God's job

  751. is to bring that stuff to light.

  752. Your job is to pray.

  753. And I think sometimes

  754. we so underestimate

  755. the power of prayer,

  756. we so minimize

  757. the power of prayer

  758. that we think

  759. that that's like

  760. a lesser work.

  761. Like, no,

  762. actually the real work

  763. is that I tell them

  764. what I think is there,

  765. even if I haven't seen

  766. any fruit of it yet.

  767. No,

  768. the real work

  769. is to pray

  770. that God would bring

  771. that to them

  772. and that they would be

  773. convicted of it

  774. and they would see it.

  775. Will you do that?

  776. Everybody wants

  777. to discern things.

  778. Everybody wants

  779. to see things.

  780. Everybody wants

  781. to get things right

  782. on things.

  783. But where are the people

  784. who will pray

  785. into things?

  786. A lot smaller crowd

  787. when it comes to that.

  788. And I'm telling you,

  789. the real discerners,

  790. the real people

  791. who are in it

  792. not for their own glory

  793. and their own satisfaction,

  794. but are in it

  795. for the glory of God

  796. are the ones

  797. who are willing

  798. to pray into things

  799. for days,

  800. months,

  801. maybe years,

  802. that they think

  803. they see

  804. and they're willing

  805. to pray

  806. and pray

  807. and pray

  808. until God

  809. brings it forth

  810. and causes them

  811. to be convicted

  812. themselves

  813. and new fruit

  814. is born.

  815. Who's willing

  816. to do that?

  817. Who's willing

  818. to do that work?

  819. Who's willing

  820. to do that work

  821. in a new church plant

  822. to do the work

  823. of building

  824. a good foundation

  825. in this church?

  826. Not of evil suspicion,

  827. skepticism,

  828. and cynicism,

  829. but of love

  830. that hopes the best

  831. for people

  832. and is praying

  833. through

  834. all those

  835. impressions,

  836. discernments,

  837. and things

  838. that we think

  839. are there.

  840. Again,

  841. I'm not telling

  842. anybody that they're

  843. seeing things

  844. right or wrong.

  845. That's not my place

  846. right now

  847. in this sermon.

  848. The whole point is

  849. what do you do

  850. with it?

  851. What do you do

  852. with it?

  853. And how do you

  854. view things?

  855. How do you

  856. view things?

  857. If our default

  858. is mistrust,

  859. we're not building

  860. a good culture.

  861. And I'm afraid

  862. that we have had

  863. little pockets

  864. of distrust

  865. ever since day one

  866. that have been

  867. hindering our church.

  868. And we've overcome

  869. some,

  870. and so please hear me.

  871. I'm not saying,

  872. man, we're just

  873. a really mistrusty

  874. church.

  875. This church is

  876. messed up and bad.

  877. You guys suck.

  878. I'm not saying that.

  879. I'm saying,

  880. this is here.

  881. It's been here.

  882. It was literally

  883. there from day one.

  884. I was surprised

  885. how it came up

  886. in the beginning.

  887. And we've been

  888. dealing with it

  889. and there's been

  890. good repentance.

  891. But I'm saying

  892. there's still,

  893. it's still there.

  894. And it needs

  895. to be repented of.

  896. Because it's not loving.

  897. It's not loving.

  898. Okay?

  899. 1 Corinthians 4

    1 Corinthians 4:5

  900. verse 5 says,

  901. do not pronounce

  902. judgment

  903. before the time

  904. before the Lord

  905. comes,

  906. who will bring

  907. to light

  908. the things

  909. now hidden

  910. in darkness

  911. and will disclose

  912. the purposes

  913. of the heart.

  914. Then each one

  915. will receive

  916. his commendation

  917. from God.

  918. That's God's work.

  919. He will for sure

  920. do it at the end,

  921. but sometimes

  922. he brings those

  923. things up earlier

  924. through our prayers.

  925. 1 Corinthians 5

  926. 9-13

  927. says,

  928. I wrote you

  929. in my letter

  930. not to associate

  931. with sexually

  932. immoral people,

  933. not at all meaning

  934. the sexually immoral

  935. of this world,

  936. or the greedy

  937. and swindlers

  938. or idolaters.

  939. Since then,

  940. you would need

  941. to go out

  942. of the world.

  943. But now I'm

  944. writing you

  945. not to associate

  946. with anyone

  947. who bears

  948. the name

  949. of brother

  950. if he's guilty

  951. of sexual

  952. immorality

  953. or greed

  954. or is an idolater,

  955. reviler,

  956. drunkard,

  957. or swindler.

  958. Not even to eat

  959. with such a one.

  960. For what have I

  961. to do with

  962. judging outsiders?

  963. Is it not those

  964. inside the church

  965. whom you

  966. are to judge?

  967. God judges

  968. those outside,

  969. purge the evil

  970. person from among you.

  971. So here he's saying,

  972. if you're wondering,

  973. are we supposed

  974. to judge?

  975. Yes, yes, yes.

  976. He goes on to say,

  977. we're actually

  978. going to judge angels.

  979. So we should be able

  980. to be able to judge

  981. matters within the church.

  982. We just need to be

  983. doing it the way

  984. that Jesus taught

  985. to do it.

  986. Okay?

  987. We need to render

  988. true judgments.

  989. Zechariah 8-16

  990. says,

  991. These are the things

  992. that you shall do.

  993. Speak the truth

  994. to one another.

  995. Render in your gates

  996. judgments that are true

  997. and make for peace.

  998. Not judgment

  999. that you think are true.

  1000. Judgments that are true.

  1001. Not judgments

1002. that you assume are true.

  1003. Not judgments

  1004. that might be true.

  1005. Render judgments

  1006. that are true.

1007. This is what we need

  1008. to do.

1009. Same thing is kind of

  1010. said in Ephesians 4-25.

  1011. It says,

  1012. having put away falsehood,

1013. let each one of you

  1014. speak the truth

  1015. with his neighbor,

  1016. for we are members

  1017. of one another.

  1018. The start of that

1019. is to put off falsehood.

  1020. It's to say,

  1021. I don't know for sure

  1022. if this is true,

1023. so I'm going to put it off

  1024. either altogether

1025. or I'm going to put it off

1026. by giving it to the Lord

  1027. in prayer.

1028. And I'm going to speak

  1029. what I know

1030. to be true to my neighbor.

  1031. If I don't know,

  1032. then I shouldn't be speaking it.

  1033. If I don't know,

  1034. then I shouldn't be speaking it

  1035. to someone else.

  1036. Shouldn't be speaking it

  1037. to someone else.

  1038. In fact,

  1039. Ecclesiastes 7-21-22

  1040. says,

1041. do not take to heart

  1042. all the things

  1043. that people say

  1044. lest you hear

  1045. your servant cursing you.

  1046. Your heart knows

  1047. that many times

  1048. you yourself

  1049. have cursed others.

  1050. Spurgeon was saying

  1051. in that chapter

  1052. I was reading

  1053. that you should

  1054. basically give people

  1055. a pass

  1056. when they say things

  1057. out of passion

  1058. because how many things

  1059. have you said

  1060. out of passion

  1061. that you wish

  1062. you could take back?

  1063. I was like,

  1064. yeah,

  1065. that's probably true.

  1066. I hope people

1067. will give me a pass

1068. for some of the things

  1069. I've said in passion

  1070. over the years

  1071. because I know I have.

  1072. And it's easy

  1073. to latch

  1074. onto those things.

  1075. That's why he's saying

  1076. have blind eyes

  1077. and deaf ears

  1078. to those things.

  1079. Basically,

1080. David says the same thing.

  1081. Psalm 38,

  1082. 13-14.

  1083. He said,

  1084. I'm like a deaf man.

  1085. I do not hear

  1086. like a mute man

1087. who does not open his mouth.

  1088. I have become

  1089. like a man

  1090. who does not hear

  1091. and in whose mouth

  1092. are no rebukes.

  1093. Sometimes you hear things

1094. and you just got to be like,

  1095. you know what?

  1096. Or you think things

1097. and you want to know

  1098. a format.

  1099. Here,

1100. I'm going to tell you

  1101. a little secret

  1102. of how to get

  1103. really stressed out.

  1104. In case you're wondering,

  1105. you probably didn't know

1106. how to get really stressed out

1107. but a really good way.

  1108. He's like,

  1109. no,

  1110. don't.

1111. If you want to get

  1112. really stressed out,

1113. try to do God's job

  1114. for him.

  1115. Try to put on

  1116. those God-sized shoes,

  1117. right?

  1118. It'll crush you.

  1119. It'll weigh on you.

  1120. And I think

  1121. even from good motives,

1122. listen to me on this,

1123. I think even from good motives

  1124. where you're literally

  1125. wanting to bless

  1126. other people,

  1127. to bless our church,

  1128. to do good

  1129. to the people

  1130. in our church,

  1131. we can inadvertently

  1132. take on God's job

1133. and do a bad job

  1134. at it,

  1135. number one.

  1136. But then two,

  1137. just like be really

  1138. weighed down

  1139. and screw things up.

  1140. Even though we're,

  1141. our motive is,

1142. I just want to love them.

1143. If this is in them,

1144. I don't want it to be there.

  1145. That's not good.

  1146. That's not going to

  1147. benefit them.

1148. It's not going to benefit

  1149. the kingdom.

  1150. So even sometimes

  1151. you can have

  1152. these suspicions

  1153. with the,

1154. and have the right motives.

  1155. It's just,

  1156. you end up

  1157. veering into

  1158. God's job description

  1159. instead of our own,

  1160. which is to

  1161. trust God,

  1162. pray into these things,

  1163. submit them to him.

  1164. Sometimes just have

1165. blind eyes and deaf ears

1166. to certain things we see

  1167. or think we see

  1168. or hear

  1169. from other people.

  1170. Just like,

  1171. you know what?

1172. I'm going to give them

1173. the benefit of the doubt.

1174. I'm going to bear all things.

1175. I'm going to believe all things.

1176. I'm going to hope all things.

  1177. I'm going to,

1178. I'm going to do that.

  1179. But man,

  1180. this is probably,

  1181. it's probably there.

  1182. No,

1183. but I'm going to believe

  1184. all things,

  1185. hope all things.

  1186. And I'm going to,

1187. I'm going to do it.

  1188. You know,

1189. I'm going to do that.

1190. And then when I do see things

  1191. that I know

1192. that fruit has come forth,

  1193. I'm still not going

1194. to speak it right away.

1195. I'm going to pray for God

1196. to give me the right timing,

  1197. the right way.

1198. Pray to be a father,

  1199. a mother,

1200. to be a good brother,

  1201. a good sister.

  1202. I'm going to pray

1203. that I would do it

1204. in the spirit of the Lord.

  1205. Right?

  1206. I'm going to pray

  1207. for the right timing.

  1208. Timing helps.

  1209. Okay?

  1210. If you're married,

  1211. you know that,

  1212. right?

1213. Sometimes you bring things up

1214. at the worst possible time.

  1215. I feel,

1216. I'm not going to go there.

1217. I'm sure Gene would say

  1218. the same thing.

  1219. Like,

1220. why would you bring this up now?

  1221. It's a great point.

  1222. Great point.

  1223. Ephesians 4,

  1224. 1 to 3 says,

  1225. I, therefore,

1226. a prisoner for the Lord,

  1227. urge you to walk

  1228. in a manner worthy

  1229. of the calling

1230. to which you've been called

  1231. with all humility

  1232. and gentleness,

  1233. with patience,

  1234. bearing with one another

  1235. in love,

  1236. eager to maintain

1237. the unity of the spirit

1238. and the bond of peace.

  1239. Are you eager

  1240. to maintain the unity

  1241. of the spirit

1242. and the bond of peace?

  1243. If you are,

  1244. don't default to mistrust.

  1245. Don't default to suspicion.

  1246. Because that's not going

  1247. to maintain the unity

  1248. of the spirit

1249. and the bond of peace.

  1250. Romans 12, 10 says,

  1251. outdo one another

  1252. in showing honor.

1253. I think hoping the best

  1254. for someone,

  1255. believing the best

  1256. for someone

  1257. is a great way

  1258. to outdo one another

  1259. in showing honor.

  1260. It's saying,

  1261. you know what?

  1262. I honor you

1263. as a child of God

1264. and I'm going to give you,

1265. I'm going to honor you

  1266. by giving you

1267. the benefit of the doubt.

1268. I'm going to love you

  1269. by giving you

1270. the benefit of the doubt.

1271. I'm going to outdo you

  1272. in showing honor

  1273. by giving you

1274. the benefit of the doubt.

  1275. Imagine if that was

  1276. our default,

  1277. what that would do

  1278. in our marriages,

  1279. what that would do

  1280. in our church,

  1281. what that would do

  1282. in our,

  1283. even maybe work

  1284. relationships sometimes.

  1285. I mean,

  1286. think of some

  1287. of your work relationships

  1288. where you're just like,

  1289. oh my gosh.

  1290. It's like default mistrust,

  1291. right?

1292. Now, I'm not telling you

  1293. to be,

  1294. you know,

  1295. just, okay, fine,

1296. just let in all this

1297. bad stuff and just like,

1298. I'm going to give everybody

1299. the benefit of the doubt.

  1300. No.

  1301. But,

1302. you know what I'm saying?

  1303. Like,

  1304. there's a way to think.

  1305. Romans 12, 17 says,

1306. repay no one evil for evil,

  1307. but give thought

1308. to do what is honorable

1309. in the sight of all.

  1310. Give thought.

  1311. So I'm asking you

  1312. to take heed

  1313. to what the scripture

  1314. says here

  1315. and to give thought

  1316. to this,

  1317. to give thought

1318. to do what is honorable

1319. in the sight of all.

1320. I want you to think

  1321. about this.

1322. I want you to think

  1323. about how you're,

  1324. what is your default,

  1325. how your mind works,

  1326. how you're thinking

  1327. about the different people

  1328. in this church.

1329. Maybe even go through the list

  1330. and think,

  1331. am I loving

  1332. all of these people?

  1333. Am I defaulting

  1334. to love

  1335. or defaulting

  1336. to suspicion?

  1337. And then I'm saying,

  1338. let's remove

  1339. all the obstacles

  1340. of evil suspicions.

  1341. Let's,

  1342. let's get them out

  1343. of the way.

  1344. All right?

1345. I believe that all my heart

  1346. God wants to establish

  1347. this church.

  1348. I believe he's going to.

1349. I believe he has been.

1350. And I believe this is an obstacle

1351. that's standing in the way.

  1352. 2 Corinthians 6,

  1353. 3 says,

  1354. we put no obstacle

  1355. in anyone's way

  1356. so that no fault

  1357. may be found

  1358. with our ministry.

  1359. We need to say

  1360. the same thing.

  1361. We need to say,

1362. if I have put an obstacle

  1363. in the way

  1364. of this ministry

  1365. of this church

  1366. by being,

  1367. have this unhealthy

  1368. skepticism,

  1369. cynicism,

  1370. or suspicion,

  1371. I need to repent

  1372. from it

  1373. and turn to God

  1374. and love the way

  1375. 1 Corinthians 13,

  1376. 7 says.

  1377. Romans 12,

  1378. 18 says,

  1379. if possible,

1380. so far as it depends

  1381. on you,

  1382. live peaceably

  1383. with all.

  1384. Okay,

  1385. one caveat with this.

  1386. If you believe

  1387. that you've been

  1388. suspicious of some people

1389. in a way that you should not,

  1390. don't go to people

  1391. and say,

  1392. I've been suspicious

  1393. of you.

  1394. Okay?

1395. That's not going to help.

  1396. That will probably

  1397. just bring up

  1398. more suspicion.

  1399. Okay?

  1400. Take care of that

1401. between you and the Lord.

  1402. Now,

  1403. if you like

1404. were a jerk to somebody,

  1405. say,

  1406. I'm sorry for being a jerk.

1407. If you were mean to someone,

  1408. say,

  1409. I'm sorry

1410. for being unloving to you.

  1411. But,

  1412. as far as being,

  1413. you know,

  1414. suspicious and skeptical

  1415. and cynical with someone,

  1416. take care of that

1417. with you and the Lord

  1418. because if you just

1419. go to them with that,

  1420. it's going to cause

  1421. more problems

  1422. and you can have

  1423. this subtle kind of,

  1424. this is my way

  1425. to kind of,

  1426. you know,

  1427. tell them that

  1428. they have something wrong

1429. but by not telling them

  1430. and like me looking

  1431. like I'm humble

  1432. at the same time,

  1433. you know,

  1434. this kind of

  1435. sophisticated thing.

  1436. So,

  1437. it's best just to

  1438. take care of that

1439. with you and the Lord.

  1440. Alright?

1441. Repent and go to God

  1442. and then start loving

  1443. that person

  1444. by hoping the best

  1445. for them.

  1446. Okay?

  1447. This is a healthy,

  1448. loving church

  1449. when we

  1450. bear all things,

  1451. believe all things,

  1452. hope all things,

  1453. and endure all things.

  1454. That's why Psalm 133

    Psalms 133:1

  1455. verse 1 says,

  1456. Behold,

  1457. how good

  1458. and pleasant it is

  1459. when brothers

  1460. dwell together

  1461. in unity.

  1462. Behold,

  1463. it's good

  1464. when we dwell

  1465. together in unity

  1466. and we're not

  1467. defaulting to mistrust,

  1468. it's a good thing.

  1469. It's a good church.

  1470. It's a good experience.

  1471. Alright?

  1472. Close with Romans 15,

  1473. 5 through 6.

  1474. May the God

  1475. of endurance

  1476. and encouragement

  1477. grant you to live

  1478. in such harmony

  1479. with one another

1480. in accord with Christ Jesus

  1481. that together

1482. you may with one voice

  1483. glorify the God

  1484. and Father

  1485. of our Lord

  1486. Jesus Christ.

  1487. Amen?

  1488. Amen?

  1489. Amen.
