  1. When we were singing, I thought of this, and so this is not really quite on topic, but anybody familiar with the Heidelberg Catechism?

  2. ! You ever heard that? Raise your hand if you know. Heidelberg Catechism? Okay. There's a statement in the Heidelberg Catechism that's very precious and I want to read it.

  3. Heidelberg Catechism question number one.

  4. What is your only comfort in life and in death?

  5. Answer. That I am not my own, but belong, body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.

  6. He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood and has delivered me from the tyranny of the devil.

  7. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven.

  8. In fact, all things must work together for my salvation.

  9. Because I do belong to Him, Christ, by His Holy Spirit, also assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him.

  10. There's a verse in 2 Corinthians 5 that says,

  11. This we judge, that one died for all, that all who live would no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died for them.

  12. And I thought of this while we were singing and I was just overwhelmed with thankfulness that He bought me and my life is not my own anymore.

  13. I did such a horrible job running my life. It's complete.

  14. Me running my life was horrible. You know, just so terrible.

  15. And the illusion of freedom and autonomy that I had is just a lie. It's just a lie.

  16. And He bought me from that. He made me His own.

  17. And I'm free now not to run my own life.

  18. He runs it better. He runs it better than I do.

  19. That's the truth for anyone who's in Christ is you are purchased.

  20. You're not your own anymore. He runs your life now. He's the boss.

  21. And He does a way better job running your life than you do.

  22. Okay, that's the understatement. That's the most understated understatement possible.

  23. He said, Jesus does a better job running your life than you do.

  24. He does a better job running my life than I do.

  25. And I'm so thankful. This is my only comfort in life and death.

  26. That I was bought. I'm not my own anymore.

  27. It's related somewhat to this, but it is related to my topic.

  28. But I just wanted to start off with that.

  29. So today, my topic is a vision for the preeminence of Christ.

  30. Or in other words, Jesus first.

  31. About the simplest way to say it. Jesus first.

  32. Okay.

  33. That's what preeminence means in its first place.

  34. Okay.

  35. And my main texts are going to be in Colossians and in Ephesians.

  36. And kind of a little background, what I've been thinking about.

  37. The verse in Proverbs 29 and 18 says, where there is no vision, the people perish.

  38. Okay.

  39. So, Jesus Christ is the Lord of the microbe.

  40. He's in the details.

  41. He's also Lord of the macro.

  42. Big picture.

  43. Okay.

  44. We need both.

  45. All right.

  46. And without big picture, we start to lose track of why are we doing what we're doing?

  47. Why?

  48. You know?

  49. And He wants to communicate to us why.

  50. He's a God of vision.

  51. And that's really, that's where my mind and heart is not detail stuff.

  52. It's more big picture stuff.

  53. It's vision.

  54. And there is no greater vision for the church than her savior.

  55. And I aim to show that.

  56. I think it's self-evident in the scripture.

  57. The difficulty of preparing for this sermon is just weeding it down.

  58. You could just say, read the New Testament.

  59. And that's what it says, you know, but you can't just read the whole New Testament here.

  60. But we need a vision bigger than us.

  61. Okay.

  62. We perish without vision.

  63. We need the Lord to give us something outside of ourselves that's bigger than ourselves for life to have any meaning and purpose.

  64. God made us that way.

  65. This is, this is, this is in the heart code.

  66. If we don't have this, we die on the vine.

  67. So, Christ Church, our mission is on our website.

  68. Our mission is the kingdom of God and all of life together.

  69. The kingdom of God and all of life together.

  70. I'll unpack that a little bit.

  71. Some of you are very familiar with that.

  72. Some of you, maybe not so much.

  73. A lot of that comes from Matthew 6, 33.

  74. Where Jesus says, seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

  75. And all of these things, meaning all the necessaries, everything you need for life, will be added to you.

  76. Make it simple.

  77. There's one thing that's needful.

  78. Seek first the kingdom of God, his righteousness.

  79. And I got all the rest.

  80. I'm God.

  81. Okay.

  82. I'm making this simple for you.

  83. And this is our way of articulating that truth in the context of the church.

  84. Okay.

  85. Kingdom of God and all of life together.

  86. And we're going to talk a little bit more about the details of that.

  87. What are some of the implications of that mission statement?

  88. And ultimately my goal is to answer two questions about this, this mission statement.

  89. One is, how does Jesus fit into this?

  90. Okay.

  91. Kingdom of God.

  92. Mormons talk about kingdom of God.

  93. All right.

  94. Jehovah's Witnesses talk about kingdom of God.

  95. Muslims.

  96. You know, there's a lot of people who claim obedience and worship to the one true God and are comfortable with this kind of language.

  97. What differentiates us from them?

  98. You know, I want to talk about that.

  99. And what differentiates us is Jesus.

  100. By the way, the true, the true Christ.

  101. Okay.

  102. We'll talk about why.

  103. And then what's the point?

  104. What's the goal?

  105. Why?

  106. You know, is there some ultimate reason that we should seek first the kingdom of God?

  107. There is.

  108. And it's important to know that reason.

  109. Otherwise, we make God an instrument for our own selfish interests.

  110. I want to be happy.

  111. God's ways are good.

  112. I want to be happy.

  113. So I'm going to do these things so I have a happier life.

  114. You know?

  115. Or I don't want to go to hell.

  116. Like, not wanting to go to hell is a very good motivation.

  117. The Holy Spirit gives us that motivation.

  118. It's great, but it shouldn't stay there.

  119. There's a lot more to the motivating work of a regenerated heart in the Holy Spirit.

  120. There's a lot more motives that he puts in there.

  121. And they're a lot bigger than just avoiding hell and just having a happy life.

  122. Although, there's no life that's happier than being in Christ.

  123. So, anyway, there's the two.

  124. That's my aim.

  125. To understand, in this mission statement, the kingdom of God and all of life together.

  126. How does Jesus fit into that?

  127. And for what purpose?

  128. You know, what's the goal?

  129. So, let's dive into question number one.

  130. How does Jesus fit into this?

  131. Well, Jesus Christ is the king of the kingdom of God.

  132. Okay?

  133. Very simple.

  134. The kingdom of God has a king.

  135. Jesus is it.

  136. Okay?

  137. Let's read in Colossians chapter one.

  138. Let's start in verse 13.

  139. Okay.

  140. Verse 13.

  141. Colossians 1.13.

  142. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,

  143. in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

  144. All right.

  145. I had tons of verses for this.

  146. I took them all out.

  147. That's good enough.

  148. The kingdom of his beloved Son.

  149. He took us out of the kingdom of darkness that we were born into.

  150. We got it natural from Adam.

  151. We were all born under sin, under the wrath of God, in the kingdom of darkness ruled by Satan.

  152. And he transferred us out of that kingdom into the kingdom of his beloved Son.

  153. That's the kingdom of God.

  154. And Jesus is king over it.

  155. Okay?

  156. Okay?

  157. It's the...

  158. I think...

  159. I heard Josh say this one time.

  160. I was actually trying to find the quote last minute, but I couldn't.

  161. A definition of the kingdom of God that he likes to share a lot.

  162. It's the realm of his uncontested rule.

  163. I think I'm getting that right.

  164. But it's where what he says goes.

  165. When Jesus says the thing, everyone in there does that thing.

  166. That's the kingdom of God.

  167. So, Jesus.

  168. The kingdom of God.

  169. We're pursuing the kingdom of God.

  170. Jesus is that king.

  171. And so, you know, the title of this is,

  172. A Vision for the Preeminence of Christ.

  173. We're thinking through how Christ factors in to what our mission is.

  174. Well, he is the king.

  175. And we have not just a sort of, I don't know, an ungrounded, untethered, unpersoned conception of the kingdom of God.

  176. It's a person.

  177. We're married and under the reign and the rule of a person.

  178. We have a personal relationship to our king, Jesus.

  179. We're directly ruled now by him.

  180. I'm not ruled by myself anymore.

  181. I'm ruled by Jesus Christ.

  182. So, the kingdom of God.

  183. Jesus is king in the kingdom of God.

  184. That's how he factors in.

  185. Number two.

  186. In all of life.

  187. How does he factor into in all of life?

  188. Well, let's just keep reading here.

  189. Starting in verse 15.

  190. Continuing on this thought here.

  191. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

  192. For by him, all things were created.

  193. In heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

  194. All things were created through him and for him.

  195. And he is before all things.

  196. And in him, all things hold together.

  197. I'm going to pause right there.

  198. It's hard to get more comprehensive than that.

  199. All things.

  200. Okay.

  201. He was the origin point of all creation.

  202. God created everything through Jesus as the means.

  203. In the beginning was the word.

  204. The word was with God and the word was God.

  205. You know, God said, let there be light.

  206. Light happened.

  207. Who was speaking there?

  208. It was through Christ.

  209. We're actually getting to revelation here on some stuff in Genesis.

  210. Paul's unpacking some Genesis creation theology here for us.

  211. He created everything through Christ.

  212. For what purpose?

  213. For him.

  214. They're all made for him, for Jesus, for the son.

  215. Which includes us.

  216. And that includes all of our life.

  217. Okay.

  218. So we have a kingdom.

  219. Kingdom of God.

  220. Kingdom of God.

  221. Ruled by a king, Jesus.

  222. In all of life.

  223. All of which was created by him, through him, and for him.

  224. That's the ultimate telos of everything.

  225. It's for him.

  226. For Jesus.

  227. I'll continue reading there.

  228. He's before all things, verse 17.

  229. In him all things hold together.

  230. And he's the head of the body, the church.

  231. He's the beginning, the firstborn from the dead.

  232. That in everything, he might be preeminent.

  233. Or as the NESB says, that he might have first place in everything.

  234. Okay.

  235. So.

  236. Everything means everything.

  237. Okay.

  238. Jesus.

  239. It's kind of a cliche statement.

  240. He's Lord of all.

  241. Or he isn't Lord at all.

  242. You know.

  243. He's either Lord of all.

  244. What am I saying?

  245. If he's not Lord of all, he's not Lord at all.

  246. That's what it is.

  247. If he's not Lord of all, he's not Lord at all.

  248. He's over everything.

  249. Every single piece of all creation.

  250. His.

  251. Okay.

  252. Well, what about the part that's, you know, kingdom of darkness.

  253. And I wasn't living like that before.

  254. And I was living for myself.

  255. And, you know, I wasn't obeying Jesus then.

  256. It didn't seem like the reign and rule of Jesus was over my life.

  257. He bought me.

  258. And he put me into the kingdom such that that rule would be manifested on earth as it is in heaven.

  259. Yes.

  260. He did have an authority over me.

  261. I was created for his purpose and I was rebelling against his purpose.

  262. So he saved me and put me into his kingdom so that his purposes would be realized in my life.

  263. And not just me all by myself.

  264. But in the church.

  265. Which we'll talk about that.

  266. But first, I think it's important to emphasize all of life.

  267. This is this fights against the tendency to compartmentalize our life.

  268. You do your Christian stuff over here and you do your everything else over here and you keep them separate.

  269. This is like you keep Jesus on Sunday morning and you're willing to talk about Jesus on Sunday morning.

  270. But you're not willing to let Jesus be Lord of how you talk to your wife.

  271. You know, how you speak to your kids.

  272. How you work at your job.

  273. How you work at your job.

  274. How you work at your job.

  275. So everything means everything.

  276. That in all things he might have first place.

  277. Me.

  278. Marriage.

  279. Family.

  280. Parenting.

  281. Church.

  282. Money.

  283. Work.

  284. School.

  285. Politics.

  286. Speech.

  287. Sex.

  288. Food.

  289. Drink.

  290. Hobbies.

  291. Entertainment.

  292. The way we dress.

  293. The way we think.

  294. Our emotions.

  295. Our affections.

  296. Our evangelism.

  297. It's like surely that one's Jesus's boss of.

  298. Well, there's a lot of bad motives to do a lot of things that look really good.

  299. Okay.

  300. Is he Lord of that?

  301. Are you doing it for him?

  302. You know?

  303. Your time.

  304. Your ambitions.

  305. That in all things he would have first place.

  306. Okay.

  307. The whole thing he purchased, even though he had a right to all that,

  308. before we were converted and we were in Christ.

  309. Because he's God.

  310. And everything was created for him.

  311. He purchased us and redeemed us in order to make it so in our life.

  312. And if we hold the name of Jesus, there's not a single square inch of territory in our life that he doesn't say,

  313. mine.

  314. And every day I go by holding back that little piece of territory, I'm in rebellion against God.

  315. Okay.

  316. And we're commanded to fear and tremble and say, hey, work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

  317. God's goal is not just our happiness, although that is part of it in his mercy.

  318. It says his son would be preeminent in everything.

  319. He would have the reward of his suffering.

  320. He would have the reward that God ordained all of creation was made for in the first place.

  321. It's all his.

  322. Okay.

  323. He deserves it.

  324. He deserved it by birthright because he breathed everything into creation.

  325. That's what God made it for.

  326. And he deserved it by his substitutionary death on the cross.

  327. He purchased us.

  328. You know, double worthy.

  329. So, in all of life.

  330. In all of life.

  331. So, we believe in a whole little Christianity.

  332. A Christianity that doesn't get compartmentalized to church and giving money and doing a little

  333. ministry there and doing a little ministry there and trying to buy God off to leave you

  334. alone for all the rest of your life that you run yourself.

  335. No.

  336. He bought the whole thing.

  337. Okay.

  338. It's an all or nothing deal.

  339. He's Lord and Savior.

  340. You can't separate them from each other.

  341. All of life.

  342. So, do we go just do this Christian, Jesus is my Lord thing all by ourselves somewhere?

  343. No.

  344. It's together.

  345. Okay.

  346. We'll keep going to there.

  347. So, this is, you know, again, the kingdom of God and all of life.

  348. Jesus is Lord of all of life.

  349. And it's together.

  350. It's together.

  351. Continue reading Colossians here.

  352. And he's the head.

  353. He's for all things.

  354. And in him all things hold together.

  355. He's the head of the body.

  356. His body, the church.

  357. He's the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

  358. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell and through him to reconcile to himself

  359. all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

  360. He's the head of the body of the church.

  361. He's the head of the body of the church.

  362. We don't live under the rule of Jesus separate from each other.

  363. And we are Christ's body under one head.

  364. Okay.

  365. You don't have this.

  366. There's not a category for like, we're all just different members.

  367. Okay.

  368. We each do a different thing.

  369. He made hands.

  370. He made noses.

  371. He made ears.

  372. You know, spiritually speaking, the Bible uses this language to talk about the multivariate

  373. body of Christ with the different gifts and the different members.

  374. We don't each, it's like a thumb.

  375. Like I'm a thumb and I'm just connected to the head, you know, like a head with a thumb

  376. on it, you know, over here.

  377. And then there's another one over here.

  378. It's like, I'm the foot with the, you know, head.

  379. No, no, no.

  380. We're all together connected to Christ.

  381. And he is the head over all of us.

  382. And together through the working of the Holy Spirit, we imperfectly, there's sin.

  383. Until Jesus comes back, that's not going to be perfect.

  384. But increasingly more perfectly, represent Jesus.

  385. You can't represent Jesus all by yourself.

  386. I mean, we might want to.

  387. And in certain ways we have that opportunity to represent Jesus, but it's only ever a portion

  388. of his character and his grace.

  389. And anyway, getting ahead of myself a little bit here.

  390. That's the together part.

  391. It's the church.

  392. Okay.

  393. The kingdom of God and all of life together.

  394. He's before all things and in him, all things hold together.

  395. Ephesians goes into this a lot.

  396. So I'm going to, I'm going to flip over to Ephesians and read through a few verses.

  397. See here.

  398. Okay.

  399. Bear with me.

  400. I'm just going to read a lot of scripture here.

  401. Okay.

  402. I'm starting in Ephesians.

  403. If you want to follow along, read an ESV.

  404. Starting in Ephesians chapter one, verse 22.

  405. Togetherness specifically in the church.

  406. Okay.

  407. Ephesians 1 22.

  408. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,

  409. which is his body.

  410. Well, Jesus lived on earth with the physical body.

  411. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,

  412. which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

  413. Here we have it again.

  414. Jesus, head of the church.

  415. It is his body.

  416. Okay, well, Jesus lived on earth with a physical body.

  417. And he died, he was buried, he was resurrected, and he ascended to heaven.

  418. He still has that physical body.

  419. The church is indwelt by the spirit of Christ to communicate the presence of Jesus together.

  420. And so together we are now imaging Jesus.

  421. When Jesus was on earth, you could see him.

  422. He was a guy and you saw in him the glory of God.

  423. Now all the world has to look at Jesus is in heaven.

  424. They can't see Jesus right now, but they can see us.

  425. Okay, so now we are the ones who God in his mercy,

  426. is living and dwelling inside of and communicating what Jesus is like to the world.

  427. And actually it's a lot more than the world, as we'll read some passages about that.

  428. But we're his body, okay?

  429. We're the fullness of him who fills all in all.

  430. Moving forward.

  431. Ephesians 2, verse 19 through 22.

    Ephesians 2:19–22

  432. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints

  433. and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

  434. Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,

  435. in whom the whole structure, being the church, being joined together, not separate, together,

  436. grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

  437. In him, Christ, you are also being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

  438. Okay, same imagery.

  439. We're growing into him.

  440. The structures join together.

  441. This is not a bunch of Christians doing their own thing.

  442. You know, I do the, well, I'm like an evangelist kind of Christian,

  443. so I go out and do my evangelist ministry.

  444. And I'm like a prayer and intercession kind of Christian, so I'm going to go do that.

  445. And we're all just going to have our separate ministries.

  446. We all have our own calling from God.

  447. We're all unique little flowers.

  448. Well, there's a sense in which that's true.

  449. But it doesn't look like Jesus unless it's like this.

  450. Okay?

  451. The whole structure is joined together.

  452. And it grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

  453. A place for God to live through his Spirit.

  454. Okay?

  455. Moving forward.

  456. Ephesians 3.

  457. Okay, this is the big one.

  458. Ephesians 3.

  459. We'll start in verse 8.

  460. To me, this is Paul speaking,

  461. though I am the very least of all the saints,

  462. this grace was given to preach to the Gentiles

  463. the unsearchable riches of Christ

  464. and to bring to life for everyone

  465. what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God

  466. who created all things.

  467. So that through the church,

  468. the manifold wisdom of God,

  469. manifold is just like a varied, you know,

  470. lots of different.

  471. The manifold wisdom of God

  472. might now be made known to the rulers

  473. and authorities in the heavenly places.

  474. This was according to the eternal purpose

  475. that he has realized in Christ Jesus, our Lord,

  476. in whom we have boldness and access with confidence

  477. through our faith in him.

  478. There's a lot in there.

  479. I mean, that, like, you could probably spend your whole life

  480. just trying to unpack what he's trying to say there.

  481. But I'm not even going to try to do all that,

  482. but I'm going to pull out a few things.

  483. One is that this mystery,

  484. something about the unsearchable riches of Christ,

  485. God had a plan according to his eternal purpose

  486. to reveal this through the church.

  487. So the manifold wisdom of God

  488. would through the church,

  489. through a very specific means,

  490. not through individual Christians

  491. doing their own individual thing,

  492. through the church,

  493. the manifold,

  494. many folded,

  495. different,

  496. lots of different things

  497. that are different from each other,

  498. wisdom of God

  499. would be manifested

  500. to the rulers and authorities

  501. in heavenly places.

  502. I don't know if he's talking about angels

  503. or demons

  504. or both,

  505. but it's very important to God,

  506. okay,

  507. because this is part of his eternal purpose

  508. for the church.

  509. This,

  510. his vision is a lot more than just

  511. saving a bunch of sinners from hell.

  512. It has to do with

  513. revealing

  514. the unsearchable riches of Christ,

  515. the manifold wisdom of God,

  516. through the church,

  517. through each one of us,

  518. okay?

  519. We'll talk a little bit more

  520. about what that looks like.

  521. Get into Ephesians 4.

  522. Continue on through Ephesians here.

  523. What does,

  524. what does this manifold wisdom look like?

  525. Continue on Ephesians 4,

  526. starting in verse 11.

  527. And he,

  528. meaning Jesus,

  529. gave the apostles,

  530. the prophets,

  531. the evangelists,

  532. the shepherds,

  533. and teachers

  534. to equip the saints

  535. for the work of ministry,

  536. for building up the body of Christ

  537. until we all attain

  538. to the unity of the faith

  539. and the knowledge

  540. of the Son of God.

  541. To mature manhood,

  542. to the measure of the stature

  543. of the fullness of Christ,

  544. so that we may be

  545. no longer children

  546. tossed to and fro

  547. by the waves

  548. and carried about

  549. by every wind of doctrine,

  550. by human cunning,

  551. by craftiness

  552. and deceitful schemes.

  553. All right?

  554. But,

  555. so immaturity.

  556. So instead of staying

  557. in this place of immaturity

  558. where you're easily deceived

  559. and pulled all over the place,

  560. rather,

  561. speaking the truth in love,

  562. we are to grow up

  563. in every way,

  564. in every way,

  565. into him

  566. who is the head,

  567. into Christ,

  568. from whom

  569. the whole body

  570. joined and held together

  571. by every joint

  572. with which it is equipped,

  573. when each part

  574. is working properly,

  575. makes the body grow

  576. so that it builds itself up

  577. in love.

  578. So,

  579. what's the goal?

  580. Maturity.

  581. Personal maturity?

  582. Just individual maturity?

  583. Yes.

  584. But it's not limited to that.

  585. In fact,

  586. if you limit it to that

  587. and you just have a bunch of Christians

  588. off doing their own thing,

  589. having their Jesus quiet time

  590. and not

  591. participating in the church

  592. in this way,

  593. you don't have

  594. mature manhood.

  595. What's God's goal?

  596. To grow us up together

  597. to the measure

  598. of the stature

  599. of the fullness of Christ.

  600. That we

  601. would grow up

  602. in every way

  603. into him

  604. who is the head

  605. from whom

  606. the whole body

  607. joined and held together

  608. by every joint

  609. with which it's equipped,

  610. all of us different

  611. members,

  612. each filled with the Holy Spirit,

  613. each uniquely gifted

  614. and equipped

  615. for this upbuilding work,

  616. each of whom

  617. is essential.

  618. I had so many verses

  619. in Corinthians and stuff

  620. that talked about this.

  621. I just had to get rid of them

  622. because it's for the sake of time.

  623. But,

  624. every member is essential

  625. to this.

  626. Jesus has his arm cut off.

  627. Well,

  628. it's just,

  629. there's something about

  630. the glory of Jesus

  631. that's diminished.

  632. Okay?

  633. Well,

  634. that's what it is

  635. like today.

  636. Jesus is the same

  637. yesterday and today

  638. and forever.

  639. So,

  640. his body now

  641. is diminished.

  642. The glory is diminished.

  643. The character

  644. and the full,

  645. mature

  646. representation

  647. of Jesus Christ

  648. on earth

  649. is diminished

  650. when

  651. one member

  652. is neglected

  653. or

  654. says,

  655. no,

  656. I'm not into that.

  657. I'm going to go do my own thing.

  658. You know?

  659. Yeah,

  660. you're like a Jesus.

  661. You're like a church

  662. kind of Christian.

  663. I'm a Jesus kind of Christian.

  664. You know?

  665. Well,

  666. you do you,

  667. man.

  668. No.

  669. Like,

  670. you're essential.

  671. And God's not into

  672. this

  673. American,

  674. Western,

  675. individualistic Christianity.

  676. He's not into it at all.

  677. Okay?

  678. He

  679. sees that

  680. as an affront

  681. to,

  682. it robs Jesus

  683. of his glory.

  684. He purchased us

  685. for a lot more

  686. than salvation

  687. for hell.

  688. It's so that we would be

  689. part of his body

  690. and

  691. the eternal purpose

  692. of God

  693. in communicating

  694. the character

  695. and the manifold

  696. wisdom

  697. of God,

  698. which is Christ,

  699. by the way.

  700. Christ is the wisdom

  701. of God

  702. to the world

  703. and to the rulers

  704. and authorities

  705. in heavenly places.

  706. So,

  707. anyway,

  708. to recap a little bit here,

  709. you can get off point

  710. really easily here.

  711. Christ's church's mission

  712. is the kingdom of God

  713. and all of life

  714. together.

  715. How does Jesus

  716. factor into that?

  717. He is the king.

  718. Okay?

  719. He's king over

  720. everything.

  721. He bought

  722. everything for himself.

  723. Everything was created

  724. for him

  725. and through him.

  726. And it's all for himself

  727. because he purchased it

  728. round two.

  729. Okay?

  730. It was all made

  731. through him

  732. and he deserved it anyway.

  733. And then he purchased it

  734. with his blood.

  735. So,

  736. the whole thing is his

  737. all of life.

  738. And our experience of it

  739. is together

  740. through his church.

  741. And to the extent

  742. to which

  743. we try to divorce

  744. from any one

  745. of these things,

  746. it's to our detriment.

  747. And it's to the detriment

  748. of the glory of God.

  749. God is glorified.

  750. He's chosen

  751. a particular way

  752. to glorify himself

  753. and it's through the sun

  754. and through the church.

  755. Okay?

  756. So,

  757. to seek first

  758. the kingdom of God

  759. and his righteousness

  760. is to seek

  761. the advance

  762. of Christ's lordship

  763. and salvation

  764. in all of life.

  765. and as the body

  766. of Christ

  767. the body of Christ

  768. the church

  769. is the expression

  770. it's the manifestation

  771. of his kingdom

  772. on earth

  773. as it is in heaven.

  774. Now,

  775. Jesus taught us to pray

  776. that your kingdom come

  777. your will be done

  778. on earth

  779. as it is in heaven.

  780. It's the already

  781. but not yet thing.

  782. He's already king

  783. over everything

  784. but we don't yet see

  785. everything

  786. manifestly

  787. under the rule

  788. of Jesus

  789. where whatever

  790. Jesus says

  791. goes.

  792. Okay?

  793. But it's because

  794. he hasn't come back yet.

  795. When he comes back

  796. it will be that way.

  797. So where do we see

  798. the kingdom of God

  799. most clearly now?

  800. Through the church.

  801. The church

  802. is where

  803. the kingdom of God

  804. is expressly

  805. put on display.

  806. Okay?

  807. That's my point.

  808. The kingdom of God

  809. and all of life together

  810. through Christ

  811. and for him.

  812. So,

  813. take a little bit

  814. of time here.

  815. Let me see.

  816. 30 minutes.

  817. All right.

  818. I want to talk a little bit

  819. about my second question.

  820. So I said that

  821. my goal here

  822. is to answer two questions.

  823. One is how does Jesus

  824. fit into this mission statement?

  825. A little bit of vision

  826. of Christ

  827. and how he factors

  828. into that.

  829. And the second is

  830. like what's the ultimate

  831. goal here?

  832. To be happier?

  833. To avoid hell?

  834. No.

  835. You get those things

  836. but that's not

  837. the ultimate goal.

  838. All right.

  839. So,

  840. Christ's preeminence

  841. and God's eternal purpose.

  842. I'm going to share

  843. a few passages about that.

  844. Going back to Colossians 1.18,

  845. this is the opening passage

  846. that says that

  847. he is the head of the body,

  848. the church.

  849. He's the beginning,

  850. the firstborn from the dead.

  851. That in everything

  852. he might be preeminent.

  853. That he might have first place.

  854. Remember,

  855. everything is created for him.

  856. Okay?

  857. Getting into

  858. the big picture stuff.

  859. The meaning for everything.

  860. That the son

  861. would receive

  862. what God

  863. created

  864. everything

  865. for.

  866. It's for him.

  867. Okay?

  868. Read a few other verses.

  869. Let's just not stick

  870. with one verse.

  871. There's more verses

  872. that communicate this.

  873. Ephesians 3,

    Ephesians 3:7–12

  874. verses 7 through 12.

  875. I already read this

  876. but this is,

  877. actually,

  878. I'm not going to read

  879. the whole thing.

  880. We read this.

  881. It talks about

  882. the unsearchable riches

  883. of Christ.

  884. It talks about

  885. through the church

  886. the manifold wisdom

  887. of God is being

  888. put on display.

  889. And then he says

  890. that it's according

  891. to this eternal purpose

  892. which he accomplished

  893. in Christ Jesus

  894. our Lord.

  895. In Ephesians 1,

    Ephesians 1:9

  896. verses 9 and 10,

  897. it says,

  898. And he has made known

  899. to us the mystery

  900. of his will

  901. according to his good pleasure

  902. which he purposed

  903. in Christ

  904. to be put into effect

  905. when the times

  906. will have reached

  907. their fulfillment.

  908. Big picture.

  909. What's everything

  910. feeding up towards?

  911. What is it?

  912. To bring all things

  913. in heaven

  914. and on earth

  915. together

  916. under one head

  917. even Christ.

  918. Okay.

  919. That's pretty big.

  920. That's the mystery

  921. of his will.

  922. That's according

  923. to his good pleasure.

  924. That he's going

  925. to bring all things

  926. in heaven

  927. and on earth

  928. together

  929. under one head

  930. Christ.

  931. Last verse,

  932. 1 Corinthians 15,

    1 Corinthians 15:24–28

  933. verses 24 through 28.

  934. Then comes the end

  935. when he delivers,

  936. he meaning Jesus,

  937. when he delivers

  938. the kingdom to God

  939. the Father

  940. after destroying

  941. every rule

  942. and every authority

  943. and power

  944. for he must reign

  945. until he has put

  946. all his enemies

  947. under his feet.

  948. The last enemy

  949. needed to be destroyed

  950. is death.

  951. For God

  952. has put all things

  953. in subjection

  954. under his feet.

  955. But when it says

  956. all things

  957. are put in subjection,

  958. it is plain

  959. that he is accepted

  960. who put all things

  961. in subjection

  962. under him.

  963. Basically,

  964. he's just saying

  965. God the Father

  966. is not put in subjection

  967. under the Son.

  968. Okay.

  969. He's the one

  970. putting everything

  971. under subjection

  972. to the Son.

  973. And when all things

  974. are subjected

  975. to him,

  976. the Son,

  977. then he,

  978. then the Son

  979. himself

  980. will also

  981. be subjected

  982. to him,

  983. the Father,

  984. who put all things

  985. in subjection

  986. under him

  987. that God

  988. may be all

  989. in all.

  990. So,

  991. everything was created

  992. for Jesus.

  993. That's the end.

  994. Us too.

  995. We're creations.

  996. Okay.

  997. So,

  998. if you're in the

  999. created category,

  1000. not creator,

  1001. guess what?

  1002. You were made

  1003. for Jesus.

  1004. Does it stop there?

  1005. No.

  1006. Jesus is doing it

1007. for the glory of God.

  1008. Because when everything

  1009. is finally subjected

  1010. to him,

  1011. when all enemies

1012. are put under his feet,

  1013. he will subject himself

  1014. to the Father

  1015. so that God

1016. would be all in all.

1017. It's for the glory of God.

  1018. And God has chosen

  1019. this specific way

  1020. to glorify himself.

  1021. There are other kinds

1022. of ways to glorify God.

  1023. It's this way,

  1024. through the Son.

  1025. He's chosen one man

  1026. that is

  1027. authorized

  1028. to glorify God.

  1029. And it's the man,

  1030. Jesus Christ.

1031. How do we glorify God?

1032. By being inside of him.

1033. And then God works in us

  1034. to will

  1035. and to work

1036. according to his good pleasure.

  1037. Okay?

  1038. We're trying to

  1039. glorify God

  1040. our own way,

1041. according to our own thoughts,

1042. according to our own wisdom.

  1043. It's not acceptable.

  1044. It's through the Son.

  1045. That in all things,

  1046. Jesus

  1047. would have preeminence

  1048. first place.

  1049. And then

  1050. Jesus glorifies the Father.

  1051. That's what

  1052. he wants to do.

  1053. That's why he appeared.

  1054. I came to do

1055. the will of my Father

  1056. and to glorify him.

  1057. That's

  1058. what Jesus

  1059. is oriented towards

1060. is the glory of the Father.

  1061. And the Father

  1062. is pleased

  1063. to glorify himself

  1064. through his Son.

  1065. And the Spirit

  1066. glorifies

  1067. and reveals the Son.

  1068. It's a Trinitarian

  1069. glory.

  1070. It's a Trinitarian truth.

1071. This is how they work together

  1072. for this ultimate goal,

  1073. which is Christ

  1074. to have preeminence

  1075. in all things.

1076. And then he hands it

  1077. to the Father

  1078. that God would be

  1079. all in all.

  1080. Okay.

  1081. So,

  1082. what's the goal?

  1083. Everything I just said.

  1084. That Christ

  1085. would have preeminence

  1086. in all things,

  1087. subject himself

  1088. to the Father,

  1089. that God

1090. would be all in all.

  1091. You know,

  1092. the Westminster,

  1093. I think,

  1094. shorter catechism

  1095. says,

1096. the chief end of man,

1097. what is the chief end of man?

  1098. To glorify God

  1099. and enjoy him forever.

  1100. It's glorious.

  1101. It's a very glorious thing.

  1102. It's a big problem

  1103. for us,

  1104. though.

  1105. You know why

  1106. it's a big problem?

  1107. Because all have sinned

  1108. and fallen short

1109. of the glory of God.

1110. No one has sought him,

  1111. not even one.

1112. We have not enjoyed him.

  1113. That was our ultimate

  1114. creative purpose

  1115. for him.

  1116. And we all fell.

1117. God saw that there was

1118. no one who did good,

  1119. no one righteous,

  1120. not even one.

1121. And you know what he said?

  1122. I'll do it.

  1123. He looked

1124. and he found no one.

  1125. It says,

  1126. in Hebrews 10,

  1127. it says,

  1128. Behold,

  1129. it is written,

1130. in the book concerning me,

1131. I have come to do your will.

  1132. Sacrifices and offerings

  1133. you have not desired,

  1134. but a body

1135. you have prepared for me.

  1136. Jesus

  1137. did God's will

  1138. when we failed

  1139. to do God's will,

  1140. and he fulfilled

1141. the chief end of man,

1142. which is to glorify God

  1143. and enjoy him forever.

  1144. And now,

  1145. he invites us

  1146. into that.

  1147. He said,

  1148. You didn't do it.

  1149. Like Esau,

  1150. we sold our birthright.

  1151. He says,

  1152. I'm the last Adam.

  1153. I did do it.

  1154. And now,

1155. I poured out my life.

  1156. I bought you

  1157. from yourself

  1158. so that in me,

  1159. you can have

  1160. a fulfillment of that.

  1161. You can glorify God

  1162. and enjoy him forever.

  1163. Okay?

  1164. Okay,

  1165. so,

1166. the church is an embassy,

  1167. okay?

  1168. We're an embassy

1169. of the kingdom of God,

1170. and this is the truth

  1171. we're putting on display.

1172. We're not putting on display

  1173. our good works,

  1174. our good ideas,

  1175. our excellent,

  1176. you know,

  1177. giftings and all that

  1178. kind of stuff.

1179. We're just putting on display

1180. the glory of Jesus Christ

  1181. because that's the purpose

  1182. of the church

  1183. is to glorify Jesus,

  1184. to be a place

  1185. where Jesus is

  1186. accurately represented.

  1187. Okay?

  1188. And so,

  1189. our sanctification

  1190. isn't even about ourselves,

  1191. it's about Jesus.

  1192. Okay?

  1193. So,

  1194. when he says,

  1195. be holy

  1196. as I am holy,

1197. it's for his name sent.

  1198. It's not about

  1199. our personal happiness

  1200. and our self-betterment,

  1201. it's because

  1202. he deserves it.

  1203. He purchased us

  1204. for himself

1205. that he might be glorified,

  1206. that he might fulfill

1207. the chief end of man

  1208. in us

  1209. and through us

  1210. for his glory.

  1211. So,

  1212. in a church,

  1213. our church,

  1214. a church,

  1215. the church

  1216. is an embassy

  1217. of that.

  1218. That is going

  1219. to be

  1220. the universal

  1221. experience

  1222. throughout all

  1223. of creation

  1224. when Jesus comes back

  1225. and he ultimately

  1226. makes all things new.

  1227. It's all going

  1228. to be like that.

  1229. Okay?

  1230. But right now,

1231. where do you see this?

  1232. Hopefully in the church.

  1233. That's the purpose.

  1234. That's why we're here.

  1235. Okay?

  1236. Okay?

  1237. So,

  1238. some exhortations.

1239. Try to finish it up

  1240. quick here.

  1241. Number one,

1242. does Jesus have first place

  1243. in your life?

  1244. Okay?

1245. Do you have a vision

  1246. that's bigger than yourself?

  1247. Are you using Jesus

1248. for a get out of hell card?

1249. Or a make me happy card?

  1250. No.

  1251. He bought you

  1252. for himself

  1253. for his sake.

1254. You don't get to be a Christian

  1255. and have Jesus

  1256. not have first place.

  1257. There's just not a category

  1258. for that.

  1259. Okay?

  1260. It's a one or a zero.

  1261. Okay?

  1262. Either he's Lord

  1263. of everything

  1264. or you are still

  1265. not in Christ.

  1266. Okay?

  1267. Does Jesus have

  1268. first place

  1269. in your life?

  1270. Can you still have

  1271. areas of rebellion

  1272. in your life,

  1273. resisting the Holy Spirit,

  1274. and be a Christian?

  1275. 100%.

  1276. But that's why

  1277. I'm preaching

  1278. the sermon right now.

  1279. Okay?

  1280. That's the whole point.

  1281. The Holy Spirit

  1282. uses the preaching

  1283. of the Word

  1284. to put his finger

1285. on areas of your life

  1286. where you're holding back.

  1287. And he says,

  1288. mine.

  1289. It's mine.

  1290. I will have preeminence

  1291. in all things

  1292. starting with you.

  1293. Okay?

  1294. Second,

  1295. does Jesus have

  1296. first place

  1297. in our church?

  1298. I love the imagery

  1299. of the church

1300. as the bride of Christ.

  1301. Okay?

  1302. So,

  1303. who is

  1304. the chief

  1305. in a bride's affection?

  1306. Well,

  1307. if it's a healthy bride,

  1308. it's her groom.

  1309. Okay?

  1310. It's her husband.

  1311. But I'm sure

  1312. you've seen brides

  1313. who are consumed

  1314. with themselves.

  1315. They love how pretty

  1316. they look.

  1317. You know,

  1318. it's all about them.

1319. The wedding's all about them.

  1320. Everything's all about them.

  1321. You know,

  1322. he's just a means

  1323. to getting

  1324. her beauty

  1325. on display

  1326. for herself

1327. and the rest of the world.

  1328. Okay?

  1329. Unfortunately,

1330. we can be like that.

  1331. Okay?

1332. You can be myopically focused

  1333. with yourself

  1334. and

  1335. you're not focused

  1336. on Jesus.

  1337. A healthy church,

  1338. her affection

  1339. is towards

  1340. her Savior,

  1341. her husband.

  1342. Okay?

  1343. Her affection

  1344. is for her husband.

  1345. His affection

  1346. is for us.

  1347. Okay?

1348. And because we love him,

  1349. we love each other.

  1350. We love his church.

1351. But it's for that reason.

  1352. It's very important

1353. that it be for that reason.

  1354. Otherwise,

  1355. it's just humanistic,

  1356. self-interested love

1357. and as soon as you do me wrong,

  1358. sorry,

  1359. get out of here.

  1360. Leave me alone.

  1361. You know?

  1362. Church hurt.

  1363. You know?

  1364. I'm not downplaying

  1365. the fact that there's

  1366. real wickedness

  1367. that's hurtful.

1368. But if we want to be in it

1369. to win it for the long haul,

  1370. we have to have

  1371. a bigger vision

  1372. than people

1373. who make me feel good.

  1374. Okay?

  1375. Through Christ,

  1376. I have a connection

1377. to each one of you

  1378. if you're in Christ.

  1379. That's the basis

  1380. of our fellowship.

  1381. And my orientations

  1382. towards Christ

  1383. and if we're healthy,

  1384. all of our orientations

  1385. towards Christ

  1386. and the church

  1387. is beautified

  1388. by his care

  1389. and his affection

  1390. towards us.

  1391. Okay?

  1392. Okay.

  1393. Kind of more

  1394. of a general question,

  1395. but I think it's good

  1396. in light of some

1397. of this big picture stuff.

  1398. Why are you coming

  1399. to this church specifically?

  1400. Why are you coming

  1401. to Christ's church?

  1402. Okay?

  1403. There's a lot of reasons

1404. for coming to a church.

1405. I think some of them

  1406. are bad reasons,

  1407. at least ultimately.

  1408. So here's some reasons

1409. that I think are bad

  1410. ultimate reasons

1411. for coming to this church.

  1412. It's a smaller church.

  1413. Okay?

  1414. Probably pretty applicable

1415. to us who came out

  1416. of a large church,

  1417. Bellicose.

  1418. So if you've said

  1419. that to me,

1420. I'm not picking on you.

1421. You're not the only one

1422. who said that to me.

  1423. It's not bad

1424. to enjoy a smaller church.

  1425. It's a bad ultimate reason.

  1426. Okay?

  1427. The Bible says,

  1428. Jesus set each member

  1429. in the body

  1430. as he sees fit.

  1431. He's the boss.

  1432. You're not the boss.

  1433. My friends or family

  1434. are here.

  1435. Okay?

  1436. Ironically,

  1437. that's the reason

1438. I started going to church

  1439. years ago

  1440. is because my mom

  1441. got sick.

  1442. Eden got sick.

1443. And Bellicose was the church

1444. that our family went to.

  1445. So,

1446. and the Lord used that,

  1447. thankfully,

1448. to give me a lot

1449. of other reasons for it.

  1450. It's a bad reason, though.

  1451. Okay?

  1452. That's a bad ultimate reason.

  1453. More opportunities

  1454. for leadership.

1455. That one kind of seems

  1456. more obviously bad,

  1457. you know?

  1458. That's a big church.

1459. Kind of hard to climb

  1460. the ladder over there.

  1461. I'm going to go

  1462. to a small church

  1463. and, you know,

  1464. kind of level up,

  1465. you know?

  1466. People can really

  1467. appreciate me,

  1468. my gifts,

  1469. you know,

  1470. a smaller church,

  1471. you know?

  1472. Again,

  1473. yeah,

  1474. God does call leaders,

  1475. you know?

  1476. He gives us opportunity

  1477. to exercise our gifts,

  1478. but bad reason.

  1479. Real bad reason

  1480. to go to church.

1481. It's close to my house.

1482. I'm not picking on you,

  1483. Andersons.

  1484. I know you actually

  1485. live close here.

  1486. We're looking at

  1487. a church building

  1488. and it's close

  1489. to a lot of people's

  1490. houses, okay?

  1491. So,

1492. I'm not just picking on you.

  1493. It'll be far away

  1494. from your house then.

  1495. Okay,

1496. it's close to my house.

  1497. It's convenient,

  1498. all right?

  1499. It's not a terrible reason.

  1500. Sometimes God serves us

  1501. up some convenience.

  1502. That's great.

  1503. Thank you,

  1504. Lord,

  1505. for convenience.

  1506. I'm happy when I get it.

  1507. I love when God

  1508. gives me some convenience.

  1509. Bad ultimate reason.

  1510. Inconvenient lifestyle

  1511. communicated in the pages

  1512. of the New Testament.

  1513. Very inconvenient,

  1514. okay?

  1515. Jesus says,

1516. it's going to be inconvenient.

  1517. Think about that

  1518. ahead of time,

  1519. okay?

  1520. Count the cost,

  1521. all right?

  1522. What's a good ultimate,

  1523. but there's a lot

  1524. of other bad reasons,

  1525. okay?

  1526. So,

  1527. I'm sure you can

  1528. think of some.

  1529. What's a good ultimate

1530. reason to come to this

  1531. church or any church?

  1532. Jesus is worthy,

  1533. okay?

  1534. He died for all

  1535. that all who live

  1536. would no longer

  1537. live for themselves,

  1538. but for Him.

  1539. You don't get to

  1540. decide your life anymore.

  1541. Jesus decides your life.

  1542. He sets each member

  1543. in the body

  1544. as He sees fit,

  1545. and He's boss,

  1546. He's king,

  1547. He's the Lord

  1548. over everything,

  1549. and He saved me,

1550. and He's going to keep me

1551. all the way to the end,

  1552. and I'm so happy

  1553. to not be running

  1554. my life anymore.

1555. I'm just going to do

  1556. whatever He says,

  1557. okay?

  1558. And He does

  1559. say things to us.

  1560. My sheep hear

  1561. my voice,

  1562. and they follow me.

  1563. It's the inheritance

  1564. of every Christian

  1565. as we can actually

1566. hear Jesus talk to us,

  1567. and when He says

  1568. go, we go.

  1569. I might have all

  1570. these other,

  1571. you know,

  1572. I might have some

  1573. of these other

  1574. motivations going on

  1575. there,

  1576. but you know what?

  1577. I recognize them,

  1578. and I subordinate

  1579. them to the cross,

  1580. and I say,

  1581. no matter what,

  1582. Lord,

  1583. I'm going to set

  1584. all that stuff aside.

1585. What do you want me

  1586. to do?

  1587. That's a good reason,

  1588. okay?

  1589. Last one.

  1590. Why advance the gospel?

  1591. Okay?

  1592. Got this awesome church,

  1593. awesome people,

  1594. friendship.

1595. Why not just sit back

  1596. and enjoy our little

  1597. holy huddle,

  1598. comfortable friendships,

  1599. you know?

  1600. That Jesus would have

  1601. preeminence in all things.

  1602. That's why.

  1603. Okay?

  1604. That He would have

  1605. preeminence

  1606. in all things.

  1607. the existence

  1608. of every single person

  1609. has only one

  1610. ultimate purpose.

  1611. It's Christ.

  1612. It's for Him.

  1613. And they're living

  1614. in rebellion against God.

  1615. He bought them.

1616. He made them for Himself,

1617. and then He bought them.

  1618. Okay?

  1619. They have no right

  1620. to withhold their life

  1621. from Jesus Christ anymore.

1622. He gave Himself for them

1623. that they would be His,

  1624. and I'm excited

1625. for them to be His.

  1626. And I want Jesus

  1627. to have preeminence

  1628. in all things.

  1629. I'm not satisfied

  1630. with my little

  1631. Christian huddle here,

  1632. however nice it is

1633. to be in a small church,

  1634. enjoyable for a season.

  1635. If it's healthy,

1636. it won't be like that,

  1637. and there'll be a lot

  1638. of inconvenient people

1639. that you have to take care of

  1640. for His sake.

  1641. Jesus says,

  1642. if you love me,

  1643. feed my sheep.

1644. That's what He said to Peter.

  1645. Peter.

  1646. So,

  1647. why advance the gospel?

  1648. That Jesus would have

  1649. preeminence in all things.

1650. We need a vision bigger

  1651. than ourselves.

1652. We need a vision bigger

  1653. than our own salvation,

1654. than our own local church,

  1655. and this is it.

  1656. It's Jesus,

1657. that He would have preeminence

  1658. in all things.

  1659. He's the purpose

1660. for which everything was created.

  1661. I'm going to finish

  1662. with Ephesians 3,

  1663. 20 through 21.

1664. More of it as a benediction, okay?

  1665. Now,

1666. to Him who is able

1667. to do far more abundantly

1668. than all that we ask

  1669. or think,

  1670. according to the power

  1671. at work within us,

1672. to Him be the glory

  1673. in the church

  1674. and in Christ Jesus

  1675. throughout all generations,

  1676. forever and ever.

  1677. Amen.
