  1. Title of the message is Holding Nothing Back.

  2. ! Holding Nothing Back.

  3. If you've got your Bibles, we're going to start off in Genesis 22.

  4. !

  5. I'm going to start reading.

  6. After these things, God tested Abraham and said to him,

  7. Abraham!

  8. He said, Here I am.

  9. He said, Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love,

  10. and go to the land of Moriah,

  11. and offer him there as a burnt offering

  12. on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  13. So Abraham rose early in the morning,

  14. saddled his donkey,

  15. and took two of his young men with him and his son Isaac.

  16. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose

  17. and went to the place of which God had told him.

  18. On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes

  19. and saw the place from afar.

  20. Then Abraham said to his young men,

  21. Stay here with the donkey,

  22. and I and the boy will go over there

  23. and worship and come again to you.

  24. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering

  25. and laid it on Isaac his son.

  26. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife,

  27. so they went both of them together.

  28. And Isaac said to his father,

  29. Abraham, my father.

  30. And he said, Here I am, my son.

  31. He said, Behold, the fire and the wood,

  32. but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

  33. Abraham said, God will provide for himself

  34. the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

  35. So they went both of them together.

  36. When they came to the place in which God had told him,

  37. Abraham built the altar there

  38. and laid the wood in order

  39. and bound Isaac his son

  40. and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

  41. Then Abraham reached out his hand

  42. and took the knife to slaughter his son.

  43. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven

  44. and said, Abraham, Abraham.

  45. And he said, Here I am.

  46. He said, Do not lay your hand on the boy

  47. or do anything to him.

  48. For now I know that you fear God,

  49. seeing you have not withheld your son,

  50. your only son, from me.

  51. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked,

  52. and behold, behind him was a ram

  53. caught in a thicket by his thorns.

  54. And Abraham went and took the ram

  55. and offered it up as a burnt offering

  56. instead of his son.

  57. So Abraham called the name of that place

  58. the Lord will provide.

  59. As it is said to this day,

  60. on the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.

  61. And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham

  62. a second time from heaven and said,

  63. By myself I have sworn,

  64. declares the Lord,

  65. because you have done this

  66. and have not withheld your son,

  67. your only son,

  68. I will surely bless you

  69. and I will surely multiply your offspring

  70. as the stars of heaven

  71. and as the sand that is on the seashore.

  72. And your offspring shall possess

  73. the gates of his enemies

  74. and your offspring shall all the nations

  75. of the earth be blessed

  76. because you have obeyed my voice.

  77. Okay?

  78. So that's a story I think most of us

  79. who've been walking with Jesus

  80. for a long time are fairly familiar with.

  81. I was meditating on this story,

  82. just thinking of what to speak on

  83. in light of Seth's sermon from last week.

  84. And the thing that really jumped out to me

  85. is in light of him having to offer up his son,

  86. which that's an unusual sacrifice.

  87. I think we could all agree on that, right?

  88. It's not every day that God asks you

  89. to sacrifice your son.

  90. And he's offering up his son

  91. and not only is it his son,

  92. he's the son of the promise.

  93. This is the son he was not able to have

  94. for a hundred years, right?

  95. He gets pregnant,

  96. has this kid.

  97. This is the son that the promise

  98. is going to come through.

  99. And then in this weird turn of events,

  100. he says, hey,

  101. the one that the promise

  102. is supposed to come through,

  103. I actually want you to sacrifice him to me.

  104. Okay?

  105. So very interesting thing.

  106. You would say,

  107. no one would ever say,

  108. you know,

  109. Abraham was committed to the Lord,

  110. but you know,

  111. he kind of just gave God his leftovers.

  112. You know,

  113. it's like, no,

  114. it's a son,

  115. his only son.

  116. Like no one would ever say,

  117. Abraham's not really given much.

  118. Anybody would say,

  119. Abraham,

  120. if there's a guy who's given,

  121. if there's a guy who's in,

  122. it would be Abraham.

  123. Okay?

  124. But I think what we're going to see here,

  125. and this is what I want to focus on,

  126. is God didn't comment on what he gave.

  127. God comment on what he didn't withhold.

  128. You might say,

  129. well,

  130. that's just semantics.

  131. And I want to suggest to you,

  132. it's not semantics.

  133. That wording is important.

  134. Okay?

  135. He says,

  136. in verse 12,

  137. when he says,

  138. don't lay your hand on the boy,

  139. he says,

  140. now I know that you fear God,

  141. seeing you have not withheld your son,

  142. your only son for me.

  143. And what I want to look at in the scriptures here,

  144. and I believe is a theme that is all throughout the scriptures,

  145. is God pointing to what is withheld or what is not withheld.

  146. And that's not the way we think.

  147. When we think,

  148. we think what someone's giving or not giving.

  149. God is thinking what is withheld or not withheld.

  150. And I'll explain that more in a second here.

  151. But Proverbs 11,

  152. 24,

  153. it says,

  154. one gives freely,

  155. it grows all the richer.

  156. Another withholds what he should give,

  157. and only suffers once.

  158. Okay?

  159. Proverbs 21,

  160. 26,

  161. says,

  162. the righteous gives and does not hold back.

  163. The Amplified says,

  164. the righteous gives and does not withhold.

  165. Okay?

  166. And then,

  167. Matthew 10,

  168. 37 to 39,

  169. says,

  170. whoever loves father and mother more than me is not worthy of me.

  171. Whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

  172. Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

  173. Whoever finds his life will lose it.

  174. Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

  175. You see,

  176. it's not what you give,

  177. it's what you hold back.

  178. That is the thing that is important here.

  179. Because you can have a pretty good reputation,

  180. so to speak,

  181. of giving.

  182. On the outside,

  183. it can look like,

  184. hey,

  185. that person is a giver.

  186. That person is,

  187. and this would include finances,

  188. but this isn't a message on finances.

  189. This is more,

  190. you know,

  191. pervasive,

  192. more all-inclusive,

  193. right?

  194. So,

  195. you could say,

  196. that's a giving person.

  197. That's a generous person.

  198. That's a person who's an all-in type of guy or girl.

  199. That's a,

  200. that's a,

  201. that's a Christian who's really giving.

  202. But,

  203. God's not looking what's being given.

  204. He's looking,

  205. is there anything that's withheld?

  206. He knew that Abraham feared the Lord because he did not withhold his son.

  207. The righteous gives and does not hold back.

  208. And what I'm asking the Lord to show us this morning,

  209. Lord,

  210. please help us.

  211. Is there anything we're holding back?

  212. Because,

  213. I mean,

  214. I think it'd be,

  215. I would have no problem saying,

  216. probably everyone in this room is giving to a certain degree to the Lord,

  217. in their time,

  218. their talents,

  219. their treasure,

  220. you know,

  221. good on the list,

  222. right?

  223. We could all say that.

  224. We would all say that of ourselves,

  225. I would think,

  226. right?

  227. But,

  228. the question is not,

  229. are we giving?

  230. Because that's not what Jesus,

  231. or what God brings up.

  232. He brings up,

  233. is there anything we're holding back?

  234. Is it,

  235. I'm going this far,

  236. but,

  237. ah,

  238. not that,

  239. not that.

  240. Okay,

  241. so,

  242. it's not what you give necessarily,

  243. but it's what you hold back.

  244. Let's look at,

  245. this hypothesis,

  246. in the Bible,

  247. and see if we're not seeing this as a theme.

  248. Okay?

  249. Well,

  250. right away,

  251. also in Genesis,

  252. you see the first sacrifices brought to the Lord,

  253. with Cain and Abel,

  254. right?

  255. It said,

  256. in Genesis 4,

  257. 3 to 5,

  258. in the course of time,

  259. Cain brought to the Lord,

  260. an offering of the fruit of the ground,

  261. and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock,

  262. and of their fat portions.

  263. And the Lord had regard for Abel,

  264. and his offering,

  265. but for Cain and his offering,

  266. he had no regard,

  267. so Cain was very angry,

  268. and his face fell.

  269. Hebrews 11,

  270. 4 gives us a little more insight on that.

  271. It says,

  272. by faith,

  273. Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain.

  274. Well,

  275. maybe some of you wondered,

  276. what's the deal with that?

  277. They both offered sacrifices.

  278. Again,

  279. it's not just that they,

  280. you might say,

  281. they both offered sacrifices.

  282. God isn't looking to see,

  283. are you sacrificing?

  284. He's saying,

  285. what are you withholding?

  286. Abel gave of his firstfruits.

  287. Cain,

  288. it just says,

  289. he brought an offering.

  290. It doesn't say it was his firstfruits.

  291. Okay?

  292. So,

  293. I would venture to say that Cain

  294. was withholding something.

  295. Cain was withholding something.

  296. But they both gave.

  297. They both sacrificed.

  298. That's not what God's looking at.

  299. God was not pleased

  300. with Cain's sacrifice.

  301. And what we find too,

  302. that,

  303. is those who are withholding,

  304. what is the response

  305. to a person

  306. who's withholding from God

  307. when someone calls them out on it?

  308. What do they do?

  309. They get angry.

  310. Right?

  311. And we know how that is.

  312. Even last week

  313. when Seth was talking

  314. and he wrapped up,

  315. you know,

  316. he's preaching a really good message.

  317. You think,

  318. that's a great message.

  319. And then Seth has to do that Seth thing

  320. and just really go at it

  321. at the end there,

  322. right?

  323. Which I love about Seth.

  324. Appreciate that about Seth.

  325. That's part of the body we need,

  326. right?

  327. And he brings up a list

  328. of bad ultimate reasons

  329. to go to a church.

  330. And what does that do in us?

  331. I mean,

  332. I'm listening to it

  333. and you can almost feel it

  334. coming up inside of you

  335. like,

  336. oh,

  337. he's hitting the stuff.

  338. He's hitting the things

  339. that are difficult.

  340. And you either get mad or sad

  341. typically with those kind of things.

  342. It stirs things up in you.

  343. And that's what happened

  344. with Cain here.

  345. It says,

  346. Cain was very angry.

  347. Cain was very angry.

  348. And so we got to watch ourselves

  349. and say,

  350. hey,

  351. is there anything I'm holding back?

  352. Cain held something back.

  353. Another one was Saul.

  354. Remember the story

  355. when Saul was told

  356. to go,

  357. was it the Amalekites?

  358. I can't remember who it was,

  359. but yeah,

  360. the Amalekites.

  361. He was supposed to go there

  362. and destroy everything,

  363. kill everything,

  364. destroy everything.

  365. Like that was the command,

  366. right?

  367. And

  368. Sam,

  369. God calls Samuel

  370. to go to Saul.

  371. Samuel comes to Saul.

  372. This is 1 Samuel 15,

    1 Samuel 15:13

  373. verse 13.

  374. Samuel comes to Saul.

  375. Saul says to him,

  376. blessed be the name of the Lord.

  377. Blessed be the name of the Lord,

  378. brother.

  379. Good to see you, Samuel.

  380. Everything's cool, man.

  381. I'm doing the thing.

  382. You're doing the thing.

  383. We're godly people,

  384. right?

  385. Aren't we?

  386. And Saul,

  387. I mean,

  388. Samuel is not,

  389. Samuel's not cool.

  390. He's not having it, right?

  391. He says,

  392. blessed be the Lord.

  393. I have performed

  394. the commandment of the Lord.

  395. And then Samuel says,

  396. what then is this bleeding

  397. of the sheep in my ears

  398. and the lowing of the oxen

  399. that I hear?

  400. Okay,

  401. why is he saying that?

  402. Because he's supposed

  403. to kill all those things.

  404. Why is he hearing

  405. animal sounds

  406. and telling him,

  407. I have obeyed

  408. the voice of the Lord.

  409. And Samuel's like,

  410. no, you didn't.

  411. Then why do I hear

  412. these animal noises?

  413. Okay,

  414. and again,

  415. Saul's thinking

  416. he's tough stuff.

  417. He's all good

  418. because what did Saul do?

  419. He did some things

  420. for the Lord.

  421. He killed some things.

  422. But he withheld

  423. certain things back.

  424. You see,

  425. Saul says,

  426. they have brought them

  427. from the Amokites

  428. for the people

  429. spared the best

  430. of the sheep

  431. and of the oxen.

  432. And then he spiritualizes it.

  433. And oh,

  434. do we love to spiritualize

  435. our withholding from God.

  436. And Saul does the same thing,

  437. right?

  438. He says,

  439. I have spared,

  440. we have spared

  441. the best of the sheep

  442. and of the oxen

  443. to sacrifice

  444. to the Lord,

  445. of course,

  446. you know,

  447. because that's

  448. what we're doing here.

  449. This is all

  450. for the Lord.

  451. And Samuel's

  452. not having it.

  453. Samuel's a prophet.

  454. He's not playing games here

  455. and he never really did

  456. as you look at Samuel's life.

  457. Samuel says to Saul,

  458. stop with a cap

  459. with an exclamation point

  460. at the end there.

  461. So I'm,

  462. he's saying this pretty firm,

  463. I'm sure.

  464. Like,

  465. stop!

  466. I will tell you

  467. what the Lord said

  468. to me this night.

  469. And he said to him,

  470. speak.

  471. And Samuel said,

  472. though you are

  473. little in your own eyes,

  474. you're not ahead

  475. of the tribes of Israel.

  476. The Lord anointed you

  477. king over Israel

  478. and the Lord sent you

  479. on a mission

  480. and said,

  481. go devote to destruction

  482. the sinners,

  483. the Amalekites

  484. and fight against them

  485. until they are consumed.

  486. Why then?

  487. Did you not obey

  488. the voice of the Lord?

  489. Why did you pounce

  490. on the spoil

  491. and do what was evil

  492. in the sight of the Lord?

  493. And then Saul doubles down.

  494. He still says,

  495. I obeyed the voice

  496. of the Lord.

  497. I've gone on the mission

  498. the Lord has sent me.

  499. I've brought Agag

  500. the king of Amalek

  501. and have devoted

  502. the Amalekites

  503. to destruction.

  504. But the people,

  505. and then there he goes,

  506. right?

  507. But the people,

  508. the people took

  509. the spoil sheep

  510. and auction,

  511. the best of the things

  512. devoted to destruction,

  513. to sacrifice to the Lord

  514. your God at Gilgal.

  515. So,

  516. here you have this example

  517. where God is not,

  518. again,

  519. it's not that Saul

  520. didn't give to the Lord,

  521. it's not that Saul

  522. didn't do things

  523. for the Lord.

  524. And this is the thing

  525. we have to be careful of.

  526. You can do great things

  527. for God.

  528. You can do things

  529. for the Lord,

  530. look like you're giving

  531. and sacrificial.

  532. You can even spiritualize

  533. your own selfishness

  534. and say,

  535. oh,

  536. it's for the Lord.

  537. And God would say,

  538. you withheld

  539. some of the obedience

  540. that I required of you.

  541. You withheld.

  542. You didn't give me

  543. all that I wanted.

  544. You took some of it

  545. for yourself.

  546. Okay?

  547. We see the same thing

  548. in Malachi chapter 3.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  549. You have this

  550. fascinating conversation

  551. with the people of Israel

  552. and the Lord

  553. through the prophet Malachi.

  554. and chapter 3,

  555. verse 8,

  556. he asks this kind

  557. of question

  558. that seems rather odd

  559. at the onset.

  560. It says,

  561. will man rob God?

  562. Will man rob God?

  563. And you're thinking,

  564. what do you mean

  565. will man rob God?

  566. How do you rob God?

  567. And he says,

  568. you are robbing me.

  569. And then he anticipates

  570. the question.

  571. He says,

  572. but you say,

  573. how have we robbed you?

  574. And he says,

  575. in your tithes

  576. and contributions,

  577. you are cursed

  578. with a curse

  579. for you are robbing me,

  580. the whole nation of you.

  581. He's rebuking

  582. the whole nation of Israel.

  583. He says,

  584. bring the full tithe

  585. into the storehouse

  586. that there may be

  587. food in my house

  588. and thereby put me

  589. to the test,

  590. says the Lord of hosts,

  591. if I will not open

  592. the windows of heaven

  593. for you

  594. and pour down

  595. for you a blessing

  596. until there is

  597. no more need.

  598. So,

  599. here again,

  600. it's not that Israel

  601. wasn't giving.

  602. Israel was giving.

  603. It's not so much

  604. about what you're giving.

  605. It's about what

  606. you're withholding.

  607. You understand,

  608. this is a theme

  609. that we're seeing

  610. over and over again.

  611. So,

  612. he says,

  613. you're robbing me.

  614. Well,

  615. robbing you,

  616. the only way

  617. you can rob someone

  618. is if you're taking

  619. what is theirs.

  620. And he's saying,

  621. that full tithe

  622. was mine.

  623. You withholding

  624. some of it

  625. is robbing me.

  626. You're taking

  627. what's mine

  628. and keeping it

  629. for yourself.

  630. And he would say,

  631. but we're giving.

  632. We're giving.

  633. He's saying,

  634. no,

  635. but you withheld

  636. the full tithe.

  637. You withheld

  638. the full tithe.

  639. You see the same thing

  640. in Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  641. Now we're in the New Testament.

  642. Jesus is on the scene

  643. and you know,

  644. you guys know the story

  645. of the rich young ruler,

  646. right?

  647. Rich young ruler

  648. comes to him.

  649. Luke 18 verse 18.

    Luke 18:18

  650. Good teacher.

  651. What must I do

  652. to inherit eternal life?

  653. Jesus said to him,

  654. why do you call me good?

  655. No one is good

  656. except God alone.

  657. And he says,

  658. you know the commandments.

  659. Do not commit adultery.

  660. Do not murder.

  661. Do not steal.

  662. Do not give false tests.

  663. Witness on your father and mother.

  664. And then,

  665. of course,

  666. the guy says,

  667. all these

  668. I have kept

  669. since my youth.

  670. Again,

  671. I'm good.

  672. I'm a command keeper.

  673. Right?

  674. You should,

  675. you and I,

  676. God,

  677. should be good

  678. because I'm a command keeper.

  679. I'm giving.

  680. I'm giving it myself.

  681. What does Jesus respond?

  682. When Jesus heard this,

  683. he said to him,

  684. one thing

  685. you still lack.

  686. Sell all that you have

  687. and distribute to the poor

  688. and you will have treasure in heaven

  689. and

  690. come follow me.

  691. When he heard these things,

  692. he became very sad

  693. for he was extremely rich.

  694. Jesus,

  695. seeing that he had become sad,

  696. said,

  697. how difficult is it

  698. for those who have wealth

  699. to enter the kingdom of God?

  700. That it's easier

  701. for a camel to go through

  702. the eye of a needle

  703. than for a rich person

  704. to enter the kingdom of God.

  705. Those who heard it said,

  706. then,

  707. who can be saved?

  708. But he said,

  709. what is impossible with man

  710. is possible with God?

  711. And Peter said,

  712. see,

  713. we have left our homes

  714. and followed you.

  715. And he said to them,

  716. truly I say to you,

  717. there is no one

  718. who has left house or wife

  719. or brothers

  720. or parents

  721. or children

  722. for the sake

  723. of the kingdom of God

  724. who will not receive

  725. many times more

  726. in this time

  727. and in the age to come.

  728. So again,

  729. you have another story

  730. of a guy coming to God

  731. who is doing the stuff.

  732. He's obeying commandments.

  733. He's giving God

  734. certain things.

  735. And he says,

  736. one thing you lack.

  737. Another way you could have said it is,

  738. there's still one thing

  739. you're withholding from God.

  740. There's one thing that you love

  741. that you are not willing

  742. to give up.

  743. And someone else

  744. on the outside mind

  745. looking like,

  746. this guy's,

  747. he's a good guy.

  748. Like he's obeying

  749. the commandments.

  750. But God

  751. in the person of Jesus here

  752. is discerning

  753. that there was

  754. an idolatrous love

  755. of money

  756. and it required him

  757. to repent of that

  758. and to believe

  759. that Jesus

  760. is his treasure.

  761. And to prove that

  762. he calls him

  763. to give

  764. of his possessions.

  765. He knew

  766. that he loved

  767. his wealth.

  768. In Matthew

  769. it says

  770. Jesus looked at him

  771. and loved him

  772. when he gave

  773. that response.

  774. He looked at him

  775. and loved him.

  776. He knew

  777. that this guy

  778. was finding

  779. his identity

  780. in his good works

  781. but he was still

  782. withholding

  783. from the Lord.

  784. And this is a good

  785. warning for us.

  786. You see the same thing

  787. in the book of Acts.

  788. Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  789. Story of Ananias

  790. and Sapphira.

  791. Sapphira.

  792. A man named Ananias

  793. with his wife Sapphira

  794. they sold a piece

  795. of property

  796. which was what

  797. people were doing

  798. back then.

  799. If you look earlier

  800. than that

  801. a bunch of people

  802. were selling

  803. their property

  804. and giving the proceeds

  805. to the Lord

  806. at the time.

  807. And so

  808. Ananias does

  809. the same thing.

  810. He sells a property

  811. with his wife Sapphira

  812. but in verse 2

  813. of Acts 5

  814. it says

  815. with his wife's knowledge

  816. he kept back

  817. for himself

  818. some of the proceeds

  819. and brought only

  820. a part of it.

  821. So he held back.

  822. He didn't give it all

  823. but he was given

  824. the impression

  825. that he was giving all.

  826. He was

  827. a little bit

  828. deceptive there.

  829. Peter said

  830. Ananias

  831. why has Satan

  832. filled your heart

  833. to lie to the Holy Spirit

  834. and to keep back

  835. for yourself

  836. part of the proceeds

  837. of the land?

  838. Well it remained unsold

  839. did it not remain

  840. your own?

  841. And after it was sold

  842. was it not at your disposal?

  843. Why is it that

  844. you have contrived

  845. this deed in your heart?

  846. You have not lied

  847. to man

  848. but to God.

  849. When Ananias

  850. heard these words

  851. he fell down

  852. and breathed his last

  853. and great fear

  854. came upon all

  855. who heard it.

  856. The young man

  857. rose and wrapped him up

  858. and carried him out

  859. and buried him.

  860. Okay?

  861. Another story

  862. same

  863. but it's the same story.

  864. It's the same story

  865. from Genesis.

  866. It's just the same

  867. old thing.

  868. I think you can

  869. start to see

  870. that there is something

  871. in the heart of man

  872. that wants to appear good.

  873. that wants to appear

  874. sacrificial.

  875. That wants to appear

  876. giving.

  877. And yet

  878. the Lord

  879. is not looking

  880. so much

  881. at what we're giving

  882. he's looking

  883. at what we're withholding.

  884. And he looked

  885. at Ananias

  886. and said

  887. hey you've kept back.

  888. You're presenting

  889. an image of something

  890. and yet you've

  891. kept something back.

  892. You see the same thing

  893. in 1 Corinthians chapter 13.

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  894. The great love chapter

  895. right?

  896. The one you see

  897. on the wedding cards.

  898. And

  899. sometimes

  900. some of the stuff

  901. we put on these cute things

  902. are some of the most

  903. cutting things

  904. and it's kind of weird

  905. how we do that.

  906. You know?

  907. Like

  908. let's just put this

  909. cute little love verse

  910. on there.

  911. It's like you read it

  912. you're thinking

  913. this is actually

  914. pretty life or death

  915. kind of thing here.

  916. This is

  917. kind of heavy.

  918. But in 1 Corinthians 13

  919. 3

  920. he says

  921. if I give away

  922. all I have

  923. and if I deliver up

  924. my body to be burned

  925. now you would say

  926. let's just stop there.

  927. What if someone

  928. gave up all they had

  929. and delivered up

  930. their body to be burned

  931. and say

  932. okay

  933. I mean

  934. I haven't given up

  935. my body to be burned

  936. and that might be

  937. a hard one.

  938. That would be

  939. a difficult one.

  940. I'd say

  941. on the list

  942. of things

  943. that you gave up

  944. and done

  945. that would be

  946. pretty high.

  947. I'd say

  948. if I'm going to make

  949. a list of

  950. like people

  951. who are doing

  952. a good job

  953. I'd say

  954. yeah I'd probably

  955. put them high

  956. on the list

  957. you know

  958. doing the

  959. giving away

  960. all you have

  961. and then giving

  962. yourself up

  963. to be burned

  964. that seems

  965. pretty good.

  966. Seems pretty

  967. admirable

  968. and yet it's

  969. not enough.

  970. Why?

  971. But have not

  972. love

  973. I gain nothing.

  974. Wow.

  975. Wow.

  976. If I have not

  977. love I gain

  978. nothing.

  979. You can give

  980. all that

  981. but if you

  982. withhold your

  983. love

  984. you don't

  985. gain anything.

  986. This is

  987. incredible.

  988. This is

  989. incredible.

  990. That's giving

  991. a lot

  992. and yet

  993. if we

  994. withhold

  995. God's still

  996. focusing on

  997. the withholding

  998. thing

  999. and this is

  1000. not the way

  1001. we think

  1002. is it?

  1003. We're just

  1004. we would

  1005. celebrate

  1006. someone like

  1007. that like

  1008. oh my

  1009. goodness

  1010. I mean

  1011. could it

  1012. even be

  1013. that there's

  1014. biographies

  1015. of people

  1016. who've done

  1017. stuff like

  1018. that

  1019. and they've

  1020. gained

  1021. nothing

  1022. because

  1023. everything we

  1024. see looks

  1025. good.

  1026. Man this

  1027. person was

  1028. sacrificial

  1029. but God

  1030. knows that

  1031. they were

  1032. withholding

  1033. their love

  1034. so they

  1035. gained

  1036. nothing.

  1037. It's

  1038. incredible.

  1039. Okay one

  1040. more.

  1041. I think I

  1042. made my

  1043. point but

  1044. we'll do

  1045. one more.

  1046. Matthew

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  1047. chapter 25

  1048. the parable

  1049. of the

  1050. talents

  1051. Jesus

  1052. tells.

  1053. 25

  1054. verse 24

  1055. says you

  1056. know I'm

  1057. not going

  1058. to go

  1059. through the

  1060. whole

  1061. parable but

  1062. he gives

  1063. them different

  1064. talents and

  1065. then he

  1066. expects them

  1067. to steward

  1068. the talents

  1069. that are

  1070. given.

  1071. There's

  1072. different

  1073. amounts

  1074. given.

  1075. Verse 24

  1076. he says

  1077. he also

  1078. who had

  1079. received

  1080. the one

  1081. talent

  1082. came forward

  1083. saying

  1084. master I

  1085. knew you

  1086. to be a

  1087. hard man

  1088. reaping

  1089. where you

  1090. did not

  1091. sow and

  1092. gathering

  1093. where you

  1094. scattered

  1095. no seed.

  1096. So I

  1097. was afraid

  1098. and I

  1099. went and

  1100. hid your

  1101. talent in

  1102. the ground.

  1103. Here you

  1104. have what

  1105. is yours.

  1106. But his

  1107. master

  1108. answered him

  1109. you wicked

  1110. and slothful

  1111. servant.

  1112. Okay.

  1113. God gives

  1114. the talents

  1115. the other

  1116. guys multiply

  1117. the talents

  1118. this guy

  1119. just gives

  1120. it back.

  1121. So there's

  1122. no loss

  1123. to the

  1124. one who

  1125. gave the

  1126. money.

  1127. Why would

  1128. you say

  1129. you wicked

  1130. and slothful

  1131. servant?

  1132. He says

  1133. you knew

  1134. what I

  1135. reap

  1136. where I

  1137. have not

  1138. sown

  1139. and gather

  1140. where I

  1141. scatter

  1142. no seed

  1143. then you

  1144. ought to

  1145. have

  1146. invested

  1147. my money

  1148. with the

  1149. bankers

  1150. and at

  1151. my coming

  1152. I should

  1153. have

  1154. received

  1155. what was

  1156. my own

  1157. with

  1158. interest.

  1159. So take

  1160. the talent

  1161. from him

  1162. and give

  1163. it to him

  1164. who has

  1165. ten talents.

  1166. For everyone

  1167. who has

  1168. will be

  1169. given

  1170. and more

  1171. will be

  1172. given

  1173. and he

  1174. will have

  1175. an abundance.

  1176. But from

  1177. the one

  1178. who has

  1179. not

  1180. even what

  1181. he has

  1182. will be

  1183. taken

  1184. away

  1185. and cast

  1186. the worthless

  1187. servant

  1188. into the

  1189. outer darkness

  1190. in that

  1191. place

  1192. there will be

  1193. weeping

  1194. and gnashing

  1195. of tea.

  1196. And sometimes

  1197. we think

  1198. well God's

  1199. just too

  1200. hard.

  1201. I'm just

  1202. going to

  1203. withhold

  1204. the risk

  1205. of giving

  1206. it all.

  1207. And I'll

  1208. just give

  1209. him

  1210. what's

  1211. easy.

  1212. God was

  1213. not happy

  1214. with this

  1215. person.

  1216. Do you

  1217. see that?

  1218. You wicked

  1219. and slothful

  1220. servant.

  1221. He gives

  1222. it away to

  1223. those who

  1224. have and

  1225. then he

  1226. casts the

  1227. worthless

  1228. servant

  1229. into the

  1230. outer

  1231. darkness.

  1232. God has

  1233. given us

  1234. talents.

  1235. He has

  1236. given us

  1237. resources,

  1238. time,

  1239. talent,

  1240. treasure.

  1241. He's given

  1242. them to us.

  1243. And he's

  1244. saying I

  1245. want you

  1246. to go

  1247. all in

  1248. on this.

  1249. I want

  1250. you to

  1251. take risks

  1252. with what

  1253. I'm

  1254. giving you.

  1255. It is

  1256. not okay

  1257. for you

  1258. to sit

  1259. on them,

  1260. bury them.

  1261. It's not

  1262. okay for

  1263. you to

  1264. have some

  1265. semblance

  1266. of being

  1267. a spiritual

  1268. person,

  1269. to spiritually

  1270. sanctify your

  1271. selfishness,

  1272. and to

  1273. withhold from

  1274. God.

  1275. God wants

  1276. it all.

  1277. He wants

  1278. it all.

  1279. He wants

  1280. it all.

  1281. And

  1282. oftentimes

  1283. you know

  1284. when we're

  1285. withholding,

  1286. it's not,

  1287. it's the

  1288. good things.

  1289. It's the

  1290. good things

  1291. that are

  1292. the things.

  1293. Right?

  1294. It's almost

  1295. always the

  1296. good things.

  1297. Like,

  1298. even thinking

  1299. of Luke

  1300. 14,

  1301. you know

  1302. the parable

  1303. of the

  1304. great banquet?

  1305. It says

  1306. he threw

  1307. a great

  1308. banquet,

  1309. and then

  1310. he sent

  1311. his servants

  1312. to say to

  1313. those who

  1314. have been

  1315. invited,

  1316. come for

  1317. everything

  1318. is now

  1319. ready.

  1320. But they

  1321. will like

  1322. began to

  1323. make excuses.

  1324. The first

  1325. one said

  1326. I bought

  1327. a field.

  1328. The second

  1329. one said

  1330. I bought

  1331. five yoke

  1332. of oxen.

  1333. And the

  1334. third one

  1335. said I

  1336. married a

  1337. wife.

  1338. Three

  1339. things you

  1340. think,

  1341. wait a

  1342. second,

  1343. those are

  1344. all good

  1345. things.

  1346. A field,

  1347. yoke of

  1348. oxen,

  1349. and a

  1350. wife.

  1351. Basically,

  1352. a home,

  1353. a job,

  1354. and a wife.

  1355. A home,

  1356. a job,

  1357. and a family.

  1358. What's wrong

  1359. with a home?

  1360. Nothing

  1361. wrong with

  1362. a home.

  1363. What's wrong

  1364. with a job?

  1365. You should

  1366. work a job.

  1367. What about

  1368. a family?

  1369. Yeah,

  1370. that's good

  1371. too.

  1372. You receive

  1373. faith from

  1374. the Lord,

  1375. says Proverbs

  1376. 18.

  1377. So,

  1378. wait a

  1379. second.

  1380. And the

  1381. servant came

  1382. and reported

  1383. these things

  1384. to the

  1385. master.

  1386. And the

  1387. master of the

  1388. house became

  1389. angry and

  1390. said to his

  1391. servant,

  1392. go out quickly

  1393. to the streets

  1394. and lanes of

  1395. the city and

  1396. bring in the

  1397. poor,

  1398. the crippled,

  1399. the blind,

  1400. the lame.

  1401. And the

  1402. servant said,

  1403. sir, what you

  1404. commanded has

  1405. been done and

  1406. still there's

  1407. room.

  1408. And then the

  1409. master said to

  1410. the servant,

  1411. go out to the

  1412. highways and

  1413. the hedges and

  1414. compel people to

  1415. come that my

  1416. house may be

  1417. filled.

  1418. For I tell you,

  1419. none of those

  1420. men who are

  1421. invited shall

  1422. taste my

  1423. banquet.

  1424. And it's

  1425. the good

  1426. things that

  1427. often keep

  1428. us,

  1429. the things that

  1430. keep us,

  1431. that we withhold

  1432. from the

  1433. Lord.

  1434. We say,

  1435. well, that's my

  1436. excuse.

  1437. And God's

  1438. saying, no,

  1439. you have to

  1440. give it all.

  1441. You have to

  1442. give it all.

  1443. What are you

  1444. withholding?

  1445. What are you

  1446. withholding?

  1447. Are you withholding

  1448. your time?

  1449. Are you giving a

  1450. bunch of time,

  1451. but there's some

  1452. time it's like,

  1453. this is me time.

  1454. This is my

  1455. time.

  1456. You can have

  1457. all this time,

  1458. but you can't

  1459. have that.

  1460. And you have

  1461. this semblance

  1462. of I'm giving

  1463. all my time.

  1464. And God

  1465. says, but what

  1466. are you withholding?

  1467. Maybe it's

  1468. your money.

  1469. It's like, I

  1470. give this money,

  1471. but then this,

  1472. I give money to

  1473. the church I've

  1474. been giving all

  1475. the time.

  1476. I've been giving

  1477. my whole life.

  1478. Like, this is

  1479. what I do.

  1480. But what are

  1481. you doing with

  1482. the money you

  1483. keep?

  1484. Is that the

  1485. Lord's too?

  1486. Or are you

  1487. withholding that

  1488. from him?

  1489. Maybe you're

  1490. withholding what

  1491. you're supposed

  1492. to give to

  1493. him.

  1494. But are you

  1495. withholding what

  1496. you are keeping

  1497. in the sense

  1498. that you're

  1499. just using it

  1500. for your own

  1501. self and it's

  1502. not seen as

  1503. his?

  1504. Maybe it's our

  1505. career and our

  1506. job.

  1507. Maybe the

  1508. career and the

  1509. job is something

  1510. we've been

  1511. fighting for and

  1512. wrestling for for

  1513. a whole life and

  1514. I finally got it.

  1515. This is what I

  1516. wanted.

  1517. And yet it's

  1518. standing in the

  1519. way of what

  1520. God wants.

  1521. Are we willing

  1522. to let it go?

  1523. Are we willing

  1524. to let it go?

  1525. Are we withholding?

  1526. It's like, yeah,

  1527. you can have all

  1528. the things.

  1529. I'll sacrifice

  1530. time and money,

  1531. but no, not that

  1532. career, not that

  1533. job.

  1534. That's mine.

  1535. I worked hard

  1536. for that.

  1537. And I'm not

  1538. saying everybody

  1539. has to give up

  1540. their career or

  1541. job, but there's

  1542. going to be some

  1543. people who do.

  1544. Some people are

  1545. going to have to

  1546. leave some money

  1547. on the table to

  1548. follow Jesus.

  1549. Some people are

  1550. going to have to

  1551. leave certain

  1552. things that they

  1553. want to do and

  1554. not withhold them

  1555. from the Lord.

  1556. Sometimes it's

  1557. family and friends.

  1558. Sometimes it's

  1559. our kids.

  1560. Kids can become a

  1561. very easy way to

  1562. spiritualize our

  1563. selfishness.

  1564. Okay?

  1565. Some people are

  1566. going to have to

  1567. give up their

  1568. kids'

  1569. bedtime.

  1570. As if God can

  1571. have everything

  1572. but my kids'

  1573. bedtime.

  1574. Everything is

  1575. nothing sacred

  1576. except the time

  1577. my kids go to

  1578. bed.

  1579. Why?

  1580. Because it

  1581. inconveniences me

  1582. to put them to

  1583. bed at different

  1584. times in order to

  1585. have fellowship

  1586. with the saints.

  1587. Well, that sacred

  1588. cow's got to go

  1589. too.

  1590. You can't withhold

  1591. that.

  1592. You can't withhold

  1593. anything from the

  1594. Lord.

  1595. What is he calling

  1596. you to give up?

  1597. What is he calling

  1598. you to give?

  1599. Some of us,

  1600. it's our very

  1601. freedom.

  1602. It's like,

  1603. I love my

  1604. freedom,

  1605. my time,

  1606. and my choices.

  1607. I don't ever

  1608. want to limit

  1609. my options.

  1610. Okay?

  1611. Do you know

  1612. what the word

  1613. decide means

  1614. to cut off?

  1615. The root word

  1616. of decide in the

  1617. Latin means to

  1618. cut off.

  1619. A decision by

  1620. nature means

  1621. you're cutting

  1622. off other

  1623. options.

  1624. We live in a

  1625. generation,

  1626. especially with

  1627. young people,

  1628. where all we

  1629. want to do is

  1630. keep as many

  1631. options open as

  1632. possible.

  1633. And it keeps

  1634. us uncommitted.

  1635. It makes us

  1636. flaky.

  1637. What ends up

  1638. happening is

  1639. we're withholding

  1640. this sense of

  1641. freedom to the

  1642. Lord.

  1643. We're not

  1644. bond slaves to

  1645. Jesus.

  1646. We're saying,

  1647. God, you can

  1648. have everything

  1649. except my

  1650. options.

  1651. I got to keep

  1652. my options

  1653. open.

  1654. My commitments

  1655. will only go

  1656. this far.

  1657. And if it goes

  1658. to a point where

  1659. I have to limit

  1660. my options,

  1661. you can't have

  1662. that Lord.

  1663. No, he needs

  1664. that too.

  1665. We have to limit

  1666. our options for

  1667. Jesus.

  1668. We have to give

  1669. up comfort.

  1670. We have to give

  1671. up our secrets.

  1672. The things like,

  1673. well, I'll tell

  1674. people this, but

  1675. that's the one

  1676. thing I'm never

  1677. going to tell

  1678. anyone.

  1679. I'll go to my

  1680. grave not telling

  1681. someone that

  1682. thing.

  1683. Is God calling

  1684. us to give up

  1685. some of our

  1686. privacy?

  1687. What is it that

  1688. we're withholding

  1689. from God?

  1690. What secret?

  1691. What level of

  1692. privacy?

  1693. What level of

  1694. freedom?

  1695. We're saying,

  1696. God, I don't

  1697. want to withhold

  1698. anything to you.

  1699. God, I don't

  1700. And then you

  1701. hear a sermon

  1702. like Seth

  1703. brought last

  1704. weekend, and

  1705. he brings up

  1706. bad ultimate

  1707. reasons to join

  1708. a church.

  1709. Like, what are

  1710. we willing to

  1711. do?

  1712. Will we only be

  1713. in a small

  1714. church?

  1715. It's like what

  1716. he said last

  1717. week.

  1718. Well, what

  1719. happens if we

  1720. do what we're

  1721. supposed to do

  1722. and preach the

  1723. gospel to people

  1724. and they get

  1725. saved and the

  1726. church is no

  1727. longer small?

  1728. Well, is my

  1729. commitment to the

  1730. Lord with a

  1731. little clause on

  1732. the side that

  1733. says, I'm

  1734. committed to

  1735. your church as

  1736. long as your

  1737. church stays a

  1738. certain size where

  1739. I'm comfortable

  1740. and I don't have

  1741. to interact with

  1742. people that I

  1743. don't like or I

  1744. don't know as

  1745. well.

  1746. As long as it's

  1747. not a size that

  1748. is too difficult

  1749. for me.

  1750. As long as I

  1751. get to put my

  1752. friends and family

  1753. first.

  1754. As long as I

  1755. have the

  1756. leadership

  1757. opportunities that

  1758. I want and as

  1759. long as it's

  1760. close and has a

  1761. proximity to me

  1762. that I like.

  1763. Some of us,

  1764. you know, with

  1765. the church

  1766. moving,

  1767. thinking, oh,

  1768. that sucks.

  1769. That's further

  1770. away.

  1771. Some of you are

  1772. like, yeah,

  1773. that's great.

  1774. This is closer.

  1775. But that's the

  1776. thing.

  1777. It can always

  1778. change.

  1779. And the

  1780. posture of a

  1781. disciple of

  1782. Jesus should

  1783. say, God,

  1784. nothing is

  1785. withheld from

  1786. you.

  1787. I won't

  1788. withhold anything

  1789. from you.

  1790. No matter what

  1791. you ask of me,

  1792. I'll give it to

  1793. you.

  1794. All right,

  1795. offer your son

  1796. as a sacrifice.

  1797. I'll give you

  1798. my son.

  1799. Whatever it may

  1800. take.

  1801. Offer your

  1802. career.

  1803. Offer your

  1804. time.

  1805. Offer your

  1806. options.

  1807. Offer your

  1808. freedom.

  1809. Offer your

  1810. money.

  1811. Offer your

  1812. talents.

  1813. Yes, I'm not

  1814. withholding anything

  1815. from you,

  1816. Jesus.

  1817. I don't want to

  1818. be some guy who's

  1819. renowned for being

  1820. a giving spiritual

  1821. person, yet when it

  1822. gets to the end,

  1823. the Lord says,

  1824. you withheld from

  1825. me.

  1826. You withheld from

  1827. me.

  1828. You had a reputation

  1829. for being alive.

  1830. You gave so much,

1831. and yet what I wanted

  1832. you to give,

  1833. you withheld,

  1834. and you took it

  1835. all to the end

  1836. with the praises

  1837. of man keeping

  1838. you, but you

  1839. did not have my

  1840. praise because I

  1841. was not pleased.

  1842. And what ends up

  1843. happening is we

  1844. get mad or sad.

  1845. We think God

  1846. asked too much.

  1847. We think God is

  1848. too hard or that

  1849. God won't mind.

  1850. And that's the one

  1851. we don't talk about

  1852. a lot.

  1853. People will talk

  1854. about, yeah, I

  1855. feel like it's just

  1856. too much or it's

  1857. too hard.

  1858. God won't mind.

  1859. That guy in the

  1860. parable said, I

  1861. thought you were

1862. too hard, God, so I

  1863. buried the talent.

  1864. But what about God

  1865. won't mind?

  1866. God won't mind is a

1867. lack of the fear of

  1868. the Lord.

  1869. God won't mind is

  1870. Ananias and Sapphira

  1871. saying, you know,

  1872. he's not going to

  1873. mind.

  1874. He knows we're

  1875. giving.

1876. If we keep back a

  1877. little bit from

  1878. ourselves, God won't

  1879. mind is Saul saying,

  1880. hey, I mean, what's

  1881. the big deal?

  1882. I did, we destroyed

1883. a bunch of it, and

  1884. now we're going to

  1885. sacrifice the stuff to

  1886. the Lord.

  1887. God won't mind.

  1888. Well, God minds.

  1889. God minds when we

  1890. withhold from him.

  1891. God minds.

  1892. Someone who doesn't

  1893. fear the Lord says

  1894. something consciously

  1895. or subconsciously like

  1896. God doesn't mind.

1897. When it comes down to

  1898. it, Jesus wants what

  1899. he paid for.

  1900. Jesus wants what he

  1901. paid for.

  1902. And Jesus should get

  1903. what he paid for.

  1904. Psalm 49, verse 7

    Psalms 49:7

  1905. says, truly no man

  1906. can ransom another

1907. or give to God the

  1908. price of his life.

  1909. For the ransom of

  1910. their life is costly

  1911. and can never suffice,

1912. that he should live on

  1913. forever and never see

  1914. the pit.

1915. So you can't pay the

  1916. ransom that is required

1917. to pay the debt that

  1918. we owe.

  1919. That's what he's

  1920. saying here.

1921. So what did Jesus do?

  1922. Well, 1 Peter 1, 17-19

1923. says, if you call on

  1924. him as father who

  1925. judges impartially

  1926. according to each

  1927. one's deeds, conduct

  1928. yourselves with fear

  1929. throughout the time of

  1930. your exile, knowing

  1931. that you were ransomed

  1932. from the futile ways

  1933. inherited from your

  1934. forefathers, not with

  1935. perishable things such

1936. as silver or gold, but

  1937. with the precious blood

1938. of Christ, like that of

  1939. a lamb without blemish

  1940. or spot.

  1941. You were ransomed.

  1942. You were ransomed with

  1943. the precious blood of

  1944. Christ.

  1945. Mark 10, 45 says, even

1946. the son of man came

1947. not to be served, but

1948. to serve and to give

1949. his life as a ransom

  1950. for many.

  1951. He paid our debt.

  1952. 1 Corinthians 6, 19-20

1953. says, you are not your

  1954. own.

1955. You were bought with a

  1956. price, so glorify God

  1957. in your body.

1958. He goes on in 1

    1 Corinthians 7:22

  1959. Corinthians 7, verse 22

1960. and he says, he who

1961. has called in the Lord

  1962. as a bondservant is a

1963. freed man of the Lord.

  1964. Likewise, he who was

1965. free when called is a

  1966. bondservant of Christ.

1967. You were bought with a

  1968. price.

  1969. Do not become bonds

  1970. servants of men.

  1971. God bought us.

  1972. He purchased us.

  1973. We were in debt.

  1974. We couldn't pay it.

1975. God said, I will pay your

1976. debt and then you are

  1977. mine.

  1978. I own you.

  1979. You're no longer your

  1980. own.

1981. So glorify God with your

  1982. body.

  1983. You've been bought with a

  1984. price.

  1985. We don't live like we're

  1986. on our own.

1987. You know how you live

1988. like your own when you

  1989. withhold from the one

  1990. who owns you.

  1991. Withholding from the one

1992. who owns you is not

  1993. living like you've been

  1994. bought with a price.

  1995. Acts 20, 28 in the CSB

1996. says, be on your guard

  1997. for yourselves and for

1998. all the flock of which

  1999. the Holy Spirit has

  2000. appointed you as

  2001. overseers, speaking to

  2002. elders, to shepherd the

2003. church of God, which he

  2004. purchased with his own

  2005. blood.

  2006. He purchased the church.

  2007. It's his.

  2008. Colossians 2, 13 to 14

2009. says, you were dead in

  2010. your trespasses and the

  2011. uncircumcision of your

  2012. flesh.

  2013. God made you alive

  2014. together with him, having

  2015. forgiven us all our

  2016. trespasses by canceling

2017. the record of debt that

2018. stood against us with its

  2019. legal demands.

2020. This he set aside, nailing

  2021. it to the cross.

2022. How did he cancel the

  2023. debt?

  2024. With the cross.

  2025. The cross was the

  2026. payment for your debt.

  2027. The cross canceled the

2028. debt because it was the

  2029. payment.

  2030. Do you believe that?

  2031. If he purchased your

2032. debt with the cross, he

  2033. purchased you.

  2034. You're not your own

  2035. anymore.

2036. This is why we sing like

2037. the hymn this, my sin, oh

2038. the bliss of this glorious

2039. thought, my sin not in

2040. part but the whole, was

2041. nailed to the cross and I

  2042. bear it no more.

2043. Praise the Lord, praise the

  2044. Lord, oh my soul.

2045. Or the other hymn that

2046. says, Jesus paid it all, all

  2047. to him I owe.

2048. Sin had left a crimson

  2049. stain.

2050. He washed it white as

  2051. snow.

2052. If Jesus paid it all, then

2053. all to him we owe.

  2054. We give it gladly.

  2055. We don't withhold.

2056. We say, Jesus, if you ask

  2057. it, I give it.

2058. If you ask it, there's no

  2059. conversation.

  2060. I'm having short

  2061. conversations with the

  2062. flesh.

  2063. They look like this.

  2064. No.

  2065. I'm not negotiating with

  2066. the flesh.

  2067. I'm not negotiating with

2068. my flesh to say, well

2069. God, I'll give you this

2070. much but not all of it.

  2071. No.

2072. He paid for it on the

  2073. cross.

  2074. It's paid for.

  2075. He owns me.

2076. Jesus paid it all, so all

  2077. to him I owe.

2078. And from that comes the

2079. kind of love that is a

  2080. joy.

  2081. Luke 7, 41 to 47 says a

  2082. certain money lender had

  2083. two debtors.

  2084. One owed 500 denarii.

  2085. A denarii was a day's

  2086. wage.

  2087. Okay.

  2088. So 500 denarii, if you're

2089. working 250 days out of the

2090. year, that's two years wages

  2091. right there.

  2092. Okay.

2093. So one was forgiven two

  2094. years wages.

2095. The other was forgiven 50,

  2096. which is 10 weeks.

  2097. Okay.

2098. And when they could not pay,

2099. he canceled the debt of both.

2100. One was 10 weeks pay.

2101. One was two years of pay.

2102. And he says to him,

2103. which one will love more?

  2104. Simon answered and said,

2105. the one I suppose for whom

2106. he canceled the larger debt.

2107. And he said to him, you have

  2108. judged rightly.

  2109. Then turning toward the

2110. woman, he said to Simon,

2111. do you see this woman?

  2112. I entered your house.

2113. You gave me no water for my

2114. feet, but she has wet my feet

2115. with her tears and wiped them

  2116. with her hair.

2117. You gave me no kiss.

2118. But from the time I came in,

2119. she has not ceased to kiss my

  2120. feet.

2121. You did not anoint my head

2122. with oil, but she has anointed

  2123. my feet with ointment.

2124. Therefore, I tell you her sins,

2125. which are many are forgiven for

2126. she loved much, but he was

  2127. forgiven.

  2128. Little loves little.

2129. She gave because she was

  2130. forgiven much.

2131. She knew that Jesus has paid it

  2132. all.

  2133. She's not withholding.

2134. Simon withheld from the Lord.

2135. The Lord himself was standing

2136. in front of Simon and he

  2137. withheld.

  2138. He didn't give extravagantly.

2139. He didn't even give him

2140. anything to wash his feet.

2141. And this woman, she gives

  2142. water for the feet.

  2143. She's wetting.

2144. She's wetting his feet with

2145. her hair and her tears.

2146. He didn't give any kiss, but

2147. she has not ceased kissing.

2148. And people who look at that

  2149. and say that's extravagant,

  2150. that's too much.

2151. No, that's the only thing

  2152. that's appropriate.

2153. And the only time it's

2154. inappropriate for us is if

  2155. we've forgotten how much

  2156. we've been forgiven.

  2157. We've forgotten the debt

  2158. that's been paid.

2159. He didn't just make our debt

  2160. less.

  2161. He paid it all.

  2162. He paid it all.

  2163. And so an extravagant

  2164. response is natural.

  2165. It's normal.

  2166. It's evidence that you've been

  2167. forgiven of much.

  2168. Because if you've been

  2169. forgiven much, you love

  2170. much.

  2171. If you've been forgiven

  2172. little, you love little.

2173. And when you know this

  2174. and you believe this,

2175. you can say as they sing

  2176. in Revelation chapter 5

    Revelation 5:9

  2177. verse 9,

  2178. the new song saying,

2179. worthy are you to take

2180. the scroll and to open

  2181. its seals.

2182. For you were slain and by

  2183. your blood you ransomed

2184. people for God from every

  2185. tribe and language and

  2186. people and nation.

2187. You have made them a

2188. kingdom of priests to our

2189. God that they shall reign on

  2190. this earth.

2191. You say worthy is the

  2192. lamb.

  2193. You say worthy.

  2194. Lord, you're worthy.

  2195. I will not withhold

  2196. anything from you because

  2197. you're worthy.

  2198. You're worth it all.

  2199. Like, it's worth it.

2200. It's not a bad deal for me.

  2201. This isn't a bad

  2202. transaction.

2203. I'm giving to you and

  2204. actually it's a bad

  2205. transaction for you.

  2206. It's totally unfair.

2207. It seems ridiculous for me

2208. to give my life after all

2209. that you've given to me.

  2210. It's an unfair trade.

2211. It's totally out of the

  2212. whack.

2213. Like, my sacrifice to you,

2214. it doesn't even look like

  2215. a sacrifice.

2216. It seems so small and

  2217. petty in comparison because

2218. of the lamb who was

  2219. slain, who was worthy,

2220. who redeemed all over the

  2221. earth, who ransomed the

  2222. people from the earth.

  2223. He paid their debt.

  2224. He purchased them.

2225. You purchased me and the

2226. least I can give you is

  2227. everything.

  2228. Is everything.

  2229. How dare I withhold

  2230. anything from you?

2231. See, when you know that

  2232. God didn't withhold

2233. anything for us, it says in

  2234. Psalm 84 11, the Lord

2235. God is a sun and shield.

2236. The Lord bestows favor and

  2237. honor.

2238. No good thing does he

  2239. withhold from those who

  2240. walk uprightly.

2241. Do you know that he's not

  2242. withholding anything from

  2243. you?

  2244. He never has.

  2245. He doesn't withhold.

  2246. He's given extravagantly.

2247. And the devil lies to us

  2248. and whispers and says,

  2249. God's not, God's

  2250. withholding from you.

  2251. Are you kidding me?

2252. When you ever think that,

2253. just look at the cross.

  2254. Look at the cross.

  2255. Did he withhold anything

  2256. on the cross?

2257. No, he gave it all.

  2258. Jesus gave it all.

  2259. Jesus paid it all.

  2260. Jesus gave it all.

2261. And he asked that in view

2262. of this, in light of this,

2263. that we would offer our

  2264. bodies as a living

  2265. sacrifice.

  2266. Have you seen this

  2267. treasure?

  2268. Is he your treasure?

  2269. Is he your joy?

2270. Is he of exceeding value

2271. and worth so that when you

2272. see all the things that

2273. he's calling you to give

2274. to him, the things you

  2275. naturally want to withhold?

2276. You look at it and say,

2277. this is so cheap compared

2278. to what I get when I sell

  2279. this.

  2280. If I sell all I have,

2281. the treasure that I get

2282. is so much more worth it.

2283. I'm not only not fighting

  2284. to keep these things,

2285. I'm so excited to get rid

2286. of them because what I'm

  2287. getting is so beautiful.

  2288. It's so precious.

  2289. It's such a great treasure

  2290. because the kingdom of

2291. heaven is like a treasure

  2292. hidden in a field which a

2293. man found and covered up.

2294. That in his joy he goes and

2295. sells all that he has and

  2296. buys that field.

2297. He sells all that he has.

  2298. He doesn't withhold.

  2299. Again, the kingdom of

2300. heaven is like a merchant in

  2301. search of fine pearls.

2302. Who on finding one pearl of

2303. great value went and sold

2304. all he had and bought it.

  2305. In his joy.

  2306. In his joy.

  2307. So like in 1 Thessalonians 2,

  2308. 11 to 12, I say to you,

2309. like a father with his

  2310. children, we exhorted each

2311. of you, we encouraged you

2312. and charged you to walk in a

  2313. manner worthy of God.

  2314. Worthy of God.

2315. And that's my exhortation to

  2316. you today.

  2317. My exhortation, my

  2318. encouragement, my charge to

  2319. you is don't withhold

  2320. anything from him.

  2321. Don't keep anything back.

  2322. Don't withhold your

  2323. evangelism.

  2324. Don't withhold your time.

  2325. Don't withhold anything.

  2326. Don't withhold anything

2327. that's in front of you.

2328. Give it all to him.

  2329. Because he's worthy.

  2330. He's worthy.

2331. And he said to us in Luke

  2332. 14, 33, those of you who

2333. do not give up everything

2334. you have cannot be my

  2335. disciples.

  2336. This is discipleship.

2337. But I'm not telling you to

2338. do something that makes no

  2339. sense.

2340. I'm not calling you to do

  2341. something and charging you

2342. to do something that is not

2343. the most joyful thing you

  2344. could possibly do.

2345. I'm telling you to sell all

  2346. to get the treasure.

2347. I'm telling you to give your

  2348. worthless life in comparison

2349. to the worth of Jesus and to

  2350. gain all.

2351. I'm telling you to lose your life so

  2352. you can find it.

2353. This is the good news.

  2354. This is good news.

2355. And yet, how often do we say no

2356. to Jesus and we withhold things

2357. back and say, God, I want to keep

  2358. this thing.

  2359. This is better.

2360. This is better than what you

  2361. offer Jesus.

2362. Me keeping this is better.

2363. Me holding back is better.

  2364. It's never better.

2365. This is the faith that God

  2366. requires for salvation.

  2367. That Jesus is better.

  2368. He's always better.

  2369. And therefore, I keep, I bear

  2370. fruit in keeping with

2371. repentance by turning from all

2372. these things that I want to

2373. withhold and I gladly give them

2374. because he is the treasure.

  2375. He is the treasure.

  2376. And he is greater.

2377. And we have a church where the

2378. normal flow of life, the

2379. normal culture of the church

  2380. is one of, I don't withhold

  2381. anything.

  2382. It's all Jesus's.

2383. And when he says do it, it's

  2384. such a joyful yes.

  2385. Yes.

  2386. Whatever you want, Lord.

  2387. Whatever you want.

  2388. Whatever you want.

  2389. I don't want to withhold

2390. anything from you because the

2391. lamb who was slain is worthy to

2392. receive the reward that is

  2393. suffering.

2394. And I want to give it to him.

  2395. Amen.
