  1. James chapter 4. James is speaking to the Jewish Christians, the Jews among the dispersion, who are professing Christ.

    James 4 chapter mention

  2. ! He starts off his chapter by bringing up what is a friendship with the world, a type of worldliness in them that he confronts very directly.

  3. And we'll see as we go through this how James deals with them and hopefully draw some conclusions for our church this day and age.

  4. Before we dig into the text, I'm just going to pray and then we'll walk through it. Sound good?

  5. All right. Lord, I thank you, God, for your word. Thank you, God, that in your word is power.

  6. Thank you that it is a living word that is alive and active.

  7. I pray, God, that you would help me to speak truthfully from your word, that you would give me your mouth, Lord, to only speak what you are saying.

  8. I pray that you would encourage us, Lord, and build us up today, that we would walk away more sanctified, Lord, more trusting of you, more repentant, God.

  9. In true and earnest repentance, Lord, we would turn back to you where we have gone astray.

  10. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  11. Okay, James chapter 4, beginning in verse 1.

    James 4 chapter mention

  12. It says,

  13. Okay, so there's a lot in here.

  14. As I was praying and thinking about how I would present this before you.

  15. James is writing to Christians who are duplicitous in their living and acting as Christians.

  16. He starts off with a question.

  17. He says,

  18. So he poses a question.

  19. Obviously, there's not perfect unity.

  20. At least that, you know, he can maybe see.

  21. He knows that there's tension.

  22. And then there's a little bit of fighting.

  23. There's a little bit of arguing.

  24. There's a little bit of obvious quarreling.

  25. And he asks the question.

  26. He's like,

  27. What causes this?

  28. Okay.

  29. And then he almost rhetorically answers just after.

  30. He says,

  31. Isn't that this, that your passions are at war within you?

  32. In other words, you fight because you want to fight from deep within.

  33. You have a genuine reason for fighting.

  34. It's not happenstance.

  35. It's not, well, you know, like, I just don't get along with this person.

  36. And, you know, so we bicker, you know.

  37. He clearly gets to the heart of the quarreling and the fighting by saying,

  38. There's something within us or within you that drives the fighting, and it's your passions.

  39. He says,

  40. Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?

  41. In Mark 7, verse 14, Jesus says,

    Mark 7:14

  42. And he called the people again and said to them,

  43. Hear me, all of you, and understand.

  44. There's nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him.

  45. But the things that come out of a person are what defile him.

  46. Okay, so Jesus doubles down in a very similar manner to James,

  47. saying that it's not the externals that frustrate us and cause us to quarrel and fight,

  48. but the internals.

  49. Okay, out of our, Jesus later says,

  50. Out of our heart come all these things, envy and malice and greed and lust,

  51. and all these things from within, out of our own hearts.

  52. James is doing the same thing as Jesus.

  53. He's doubling down and saying,

  54. I know exactly what's going on here.

  55. And I think you can see later that they actually do as well,

  56. but there is a suppression of that truth,

  57. or maybe a sharing,

  58. even though they do know the truth that's within them,

  59. there's a sharing of, or being okay with that,

  60. that's letting them go on and quarreling and fighting.

  61. And so, you can see here in Mark 7, when Jesus speaks,

  62. he's almost reminding the people.

  63. You can see it, he says,

  64. he called the people again to himself.

  65. And then, he's very direct.

  66. He says, hear me all of you,

  67. and understand that it's not,

  68. there's nothing outside a person

  69. that by going into him can defile him.

  70. Okay, so he's reiterating, he's like,

  71. you have to remember something about what comes from within,

  72. and what issues from within outward,

  73. not merely outward in.

  74. Okay, and then he explains

  75. how that person is guilty from within,

  76. and not from the outside causes.

  77. So, a lot of the times with us,

  78. you know, in our day-to-day life,

  79. we're tempted to think that

  80. we get ripped off by

  81. so many different things.

  82. You know,

  83. if only I made more money,

  84. if only I had,

  85. you know,

  86. a different boss,

  87. maybe different spouse,

  88. you know,

  89. if only he understood me,

  90. if only she didn't nag me,

  91. all these things.

  92. I am this way because of the outside.

  93. Okay?

  94. Well, Jesus says,

  95. no, you're not this way.

  96. These frustrations within you

  97. aren't merely,

  98. only causal from the outside.

  99. There's another acting thing,

  100. and that's called your passions within you.

  101. Paul gets at this when he says that

  102. our passions are aroused by the law.

  103. So, when the commandment comes,

  104. sin comes as well.

  105. It comes alive in us.

  106. Not in the other person,

  107. but in us,

  108. Paul says in Romans 7.

  109. And so,

  110. it's really important for us to remember

  111. as we're reading James,

  112. is that

  113. we are the same,

  114. you know,

  115. these people were born after Adam

  116. in sin,

  117. and so are we.

  118. So,

  119. this type of quarreling,

  120. this type of struggle,

  121. is the same struggle

  122. that we are vulnerable to.

  123. Okay?

  124. And these aren't

  125. maybe degenerate unbelievers.

  126. These are professing Christians.

  127. So,

  128. this is our category as well.

  129. So,

  130. when we read this,

  131. let's hear the words of James

  132. and examine ourselves.

  133. Amen?

  134. Amen?

  135. Okay.

  136. You see this all the time.

  137. I think,

  138. honestly,

  139. with parenting,

  140. it's even more clear.

  141. Parents love to make excuses

  142. for their children's misbehavior,

  143. even if there's some truth to them.

  144. You know,

  145. I hear a lot,

  146. you know,

  147. he just didn't nap.

  148. Sorry.

  149. It's just like,

  150. well,

  151. yeah,

  152. it makes sense.

  153. I would probably be a little crabby

  154. if I was tired,

  155. but,

  156. in the end,

  157. his lack of napping

  158. is not the causal agent

  159. for his screaming.

  160. Right?

  161. They come out of the womb

  162. disobedient,

  163. and

  164. it's not merely that

  165. the world is against them.

  166. It might be,

  167. but

  168. we as parents

  169. are supposed to teach them

  170. how to master their passions

  171. within them.

  172. Okay?

  173. You know,

  174. I was listening to,

  175. actually,

  176. an unbelieving parent talk

  177. to his son,

  178. probably three or four years old,

  179. and his son was really fussy,

  180. would not calm down,

  181. and all the dad was saying

  182. is basically,

  183. son,

  184. like,

  185. you ate a lot of sugar.

  186. You know,

  187. that's what happens

  188. when you have too much sugar.

  189. You know,

  190. you hit a low,

  191. and you need to learn from that.

  192. I'm kind of thinking,

  193. like,

  194. he probably did eat a lot of sugar,

  195. but that is not the reason

  196. for why he's acting this way.

  197. You know,

  198. in fact,

  199. if I ate a lot of sugar,

  200. I would probably be super stoked.

  201. You know,

  202. like,

  203. maybe I'll hit a low later

  204. and be like him,

  205. but

  206. the problem is not

  207. the externals.

  208. I think you guys get that,

  209. but

  210. it's not merely that,

  211. you know,

  212. it's all external,

  213. but

  214. we frustrate ourselves,

  215. you know.

  216. This dad was trying

  217. to convince his son

  218. that he really valued

  219. not fussing,

  220. which was pretty much

  221. pointless for his son

  222. because his son

  223. clearly didn't have that

  224. as a category for value.

  225. You know,

  226. he valued sugar,

  227. you know.

  228. Not fussing,

  229. he was cool with not fussing

  230. because

  231. he wants something

  232. completely different.

  233. That's an easy

  234. illustration for us,

  235. but we,

  236. like children

  237. in Christ,

  238. if we are not

  239. sanctified by the Holy Spirit,

  240. are not mature

  241. and are like children,

  242. okay,

  243. in that we

  244. want to do the things

  245. that we should not

  246. want to do.

  247. From within,

  248. we

  249. don't have self-control,

  250. you know.

  251. We might have

  252. it put together

  253. on the outside,

  254. but where

  255. is our hearts?

  256. Are we like children

  257. in our hearts,

  258. wanting,

  259. maybe even lusting,

  260. as we're going to examine

  261. the way that James speaks?

  262. So it's good to ask ourselves

  263. and even pray,

  264. Lord,

  265. make us not like children,

  266. as the Apostle Paul said.

  267. Let us grow up

  268. into maturity.

  269. Save us from the ways

  270. that we are

  271. throwing

  272. inner tantrums.

  273. Okay,

  274. and so

  275. James says,

  276. is it not your passions

  277. that are at war

  278. within you?

  279. All right,

  280. and

  281. he says,

  282. you desire,

  283. so that's the passion element,

  284. you desire

  285. and do not have,

  286. so you murder.

  287. You can even hear

  288. James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  289. in here,

  290. the progression of sin.

  291. First comes desire,

  292. and then

  293. it gives birth

  294. to sin.

  295. It says,

  296. you desire

  297. and do not have,

  298. so you murder.

  299. You covet

  300. and cannot obtain,

  301. so you fight

  302. and quarrel.

  303. You do not have

  304. because you do not ask.

  305. So we fight

  306. and quarrel

  307. because we want to.

  308. We fight

  309. also because we're empty.

  310. Okay,

  311. notice how

  312. James says,

  313. you desire

  314. and do not have,

  315. okay,

  316. emptiness.

  317. You don't have,

  318. and so you murder.

  319. Now,

  320. emptiness

  321. doesn't necessarily

  322. lead to

  323. only the sin of murder,

  324. as we can see

  325. when James says,

  326. you also covet

  327. and what?

  328. And cannot obtain,

  329. so you don't have

  330. something again.

  331. Okay,

  332. you do not have,

  333. can't obtain,

  334. you don't possess,

  335. because you do not ask.

  336. So,

  337. we see James

  338. is going hard,

  339. he's saying,

  340. he's like,

  341. you fight because

  342. you want to,

  343. and you fight

  344. because you're empty.

  345. You fight because

  346. you don't have something.

  347. The emptiness

  348. always comes

  349. from a place

  350. of not being satisfied.

  351. It always comes

  352. from the lack

  353. of satisfaction,

  354. lack of having enough,

  355. and so,

  356. that makes

  357. our passions

  358. eager

  359. to fill

  360. the lack,

  361. right?

  362. And James

  363. says,

  364. you do not have,

  365. almost shockingly,

  366. in a way,

  367. shockingly simple,

  368. that is,

  369. you do not have

  370. simply because

  371. you don't ask.

  372. So,

  373. he turns it away

  374. from their passions

  375. and their emptiness

  376. and now turns it

  377. towards God.

  378. You don't,

  379. you don't have

  380. something because

  381. you don't actually

  382. come to the one

  383. who possesses it,

  384. who owns everything,

  385. who is God,

  386. who created you

  387. in this world

  388. with everything in it.

  389. You don't have

  390. because you don't

  391. come and ask.

  392. You ask,

  393. verse,

  394. in verse 3,

  395. you ask and do

  396. not receive

  397. because you ask

  398. wrongly.

  399. Okay,

  400. now he's doubling

  401. down on even

  402. the asking.

  403. It's not merely

  404. asking,

  405. but it's,

  406. why do you ask?

  407. What do you ask

  408. for?

  409. With what motive?

  410. He says,

  411. you do not ask,

  412. or you ask

  413. and do not receive

  414. because you ask

  415. wrongly

  416. to spend it

  417. on your own

  418. passions.

  419. He says,

  420. there is a way

  421. that you come

  422. to the Lord

  423. that's genuine.

  424. That doesn't say,

  425. okay, James,

  426. we get it.

  427. Pray to the Lord,

  428. you know,

  429. and we'll get something.

  430. I'll pray to the Lord.

  431. Lord,

  432. give me what I want.

  433. You know,

  434. just,

  435. just make,

  436. make my wife

  437. less this way.

  438. It's like,

  439. well,

  440. the Lord's just like,

  441. maybe I called you

  442. to love her,

  443. right?

  444. And vice versa.

  445. We pray all the time.

  446. Maybe we don't,

  447. maybe we don't call it prayer.

  448. Maybe we just offer up

  449. thoughts to God

  450. of accusations

  451. of the things

  452. in our life.

  453. But this is an asking,

  454. this is an asking

  455. that's wrong.

  456. This is asking wrongly.

  457. And we need to watch out

  458. with how we approach God.

  459. And we're going to see

  460. as James walks through this,

  461. how we actually do truly

  462. come to the Lord

  463. and ask genuinely.

  464. that we receive.

  465. So he says,

  466. you ask and do not receive

  467. because you ask wrongly.

  468. Spend it

  469. on your own passions.

  470. This reminds me of

  471. when Jesus fed

  472. the 5,000.

  473. He gave them all bread,

  474. performed the miracle.

  475. And he,

  476. he brought a crowd with them

  477. as he left.

  478. and then he started

  479. to speak to them

  480. and he's just like,

  481. I know why you're seeking me.

  482. It's because

  483. you enjoyed the bread

  484. I gave you

  485. and you probably want

  486. some more of that.

  487. Maybe it wasn't a bad thing,

  488. but you can kind of hear

  489. a tone in there

  490. of

  491. childlike

  492. following.

  493. You're only seeking me

  494. because I fed you.

  495. You know,

  496. you don't really want

  497. to ask of me

  498. for my teaching.

  499. You don't really care

  500. about my teaching.

  501. You want to be fed again.

  502. And that's when he,

  503. of course,

  504. says,

  505. I am the bread of life.

  506. I am

  507. the one who comes down

  508. from heaven

  509. and feeds you.

  510. Not in a mere

  511. temporal sense,

  512. but I feed your soul.

  513. You know,

  514. and so

  515. you can hear that

  516. even as James speaks

  517. with the asking

  518. of the Lord.

  519. Do we ask

  520. in the mere temporal sense

  521. for a temporal bread,

  522. so to speak?

  523. Or are we seeking

  524. the Lord

  525. because we want Him?

  526. We want the satisfaction

  527. that comes from Him

  528. as the bread of life.

  529. So in verse 3,

  530. he says,

  531. you ask and do not receive

  532. because you want

  533. to spend it wrongly.

  534. And then James

  535. keeps going.

  536. He says,

  537. you adulterous people.

  538. He brings His rebuke

  539. just almost to its antithesis.

  540. He calls them

  541. an adulterous people.

  542. Okay?

  543. I mean,

  544. this is,

  545. so if you're a Jew,

  546. even if you're a,

  547. now a Messianic Jew,

  548. follower of Jesus,

  549. you don't forget

  550. all that you were raised

  551. and born with

  552. from the Old Testament

  553. scriptures.

  554. These people are

  555. well keyed into the law.

  556. And that is one,

  557. as we know,

  558. one of the Ten Commandments,

  559. you shall not commit adultery.

  560. Okay?

  561. So he just straight up,

  562. doesn't seem like he

  563. cuts any corners.

  564. He spares the temperate speech.

  565. And he just says,

  566. you are an adulterous people.

  567. Okay?

  568. Sure,

  569. if I would hear this

  570. and I had a little bit

  571. of pride in me,

  572. I would be very offended.

  573. So James says,

  574. you're an adulterous people.

  575. And both the Old Testament

  576. and the New Testament

  577. speaks of God

  578. in a way,

  579. many times,

  580. as our husband,

  581. we are his bride

  582. in a covenant,

  583. in a marriage covenant,

  584. so to speak,

  585. spiritually.

  586. And,

  587. the Jews know this.

  588. And so James says,

  589. you

  590. are a people

  591. having an affair.

  592. there's something

  593. grossly unfaithful

  594. about you.

  595. There's an infidelity

  596. that has snuck

  597. into your hearts

  598. with how you live,

  599. with how you say,

  600. I live for the Lord.

  601. I live for God.

  602. And he's saying,

  603. you are an adulterous people.

  604. You fight and quarrel.

  605. You let your lust

  606. and your passions

  607. rule you.

  608. Okay?

  609. We want to say,

  610. and I would caution

  611. even myself

  612. as I read this,

  613. we want to say,

  614. surely not me.

  615. You know?

  616. Or surely not to

  617. the degree

  618. that I would

  619. put other

  620. people in the category of.

  621. You know,

  622. that's not me.

  623. I know who it is.

  624. They're in that category.

  625. And so,

  626. I think I'm good

  627. with the Lord.

  628. James,

  629. watch out.

  630. So as to

  631. not actually

  632. be found

  633. genuinely

  634. in the category

  635. that James

  636. is speaking to.

  637. The Lord wants

  638. us to be humble

  639. and receive

  640. what the Lord

  641. is saying

  642. to James.

  643. Examine ourselves.

  644. He spares no expense.

  645. He says,

  646. you are an adulterous people,

  647. unfaithful in the way

  648. that you are living

  649. and acting.

  650. And the reason

  651. that I know this,

  652. he says,

  653. is because you are

  654. fighting and quarreling.

  655. Okay?

  656. Now,

  657. that doesn't mean

  658. that we're off the hook

  659. if you have

  660. a

  661. merely

  662. externally

  663. non-quarreling

  664. marriage,

  665. friendships,

  666. etc.

  667. Because remember,

  668. he doubles down

  669. on the passions.

  670. You know,

  671. there is a way,

  672. and I'm sure

  673. all of you

  674. have experienced this,

  675. where you can

  676. hold it together,

  677. but you are angry

  678. on the inside.

  679. Okay?

  680. James is also

  681. speaking to us.

  682. Who know that

  683. and struggle with that.

  684. Maybe we'd be humble.

  685. Okay?

  686. This is the exact language,

  687. actually,

  688. that Jesus uses

  689. in Matthew 12,

  690. when he's talking

  691. to the Pharisees,

  692. essentially the

  693. proud ones

  694. of his day,

  695. professing Christians,

  696. maybe,

  697. they would say,

  698. or at least

  699. followers of

  700. their father Abraham.

  701. He says,

  702. an evil

  703. and adulterous

  704. generation

  705. seeks for a sign,

  706. but no sign

  707. will be given,

  708. except the sign

  709. of the prophet Jonah.

  710. So he uses,

  711. again,

  712. to the Jews,

  713. this image

  714. of evil

  715. and adulterous

  716. infidelity.

  717. and we

  718. must take heed

  719. that we

  720. understand

  721. where James

  722. is going.

  723. So,

  724. moving on,

  725. what does he say

  726. after his

  727. strong abuse?

  728. Do you not

  729. know

  730. that friendship

  731. with the world

  732. is enmity

  733. with God?

  734. Therefore,

  735. whoever wishes

  736. to be a friend

  737. of the world

  738. makes himself

  739. an enemy

  740. of God.

  741. in what ways

  742. do we live

  743. our lives

  744. that are,

  745. that we know,

  746. what areas

  747. are we neutral

  748. to the world

  749. so that we can

  750. have

  751. maybe some

  752. pleasure

  753. and mostly,

  754. we might say,

  755. living for the Lord,

  756. that sort of thing.

  757. I would,

  758. I would,

  759. I would press this

  760. that there is no

  761. neutrality to the world.

  762. that we can share.

  763. Neutrality to the world

  764. ends

  765. in serving

  766. two masters.

  767. We,

  768. we can't be neutral.

  769. We either have to be

  770. enemies of the world

  771. so as

  772. to not be

  773. drawn in

  774. by the world.

  775. Friendship with the world

  776. is enmity with God.

  777. You know,

  778. a lot of examples

  779. of this is,

  780. obviously,

  781. we're put in,

  782. we're in the world.

  783. Jesus says,

  784. you know,

  785. we're in the world

  786. but not of the world.

  787. We're called to preach

  788. the gospel to the world

  789. so we have to

  790. interact with the world,

  791. much of the world,

  792. all the time.

  793. But,

  794. obviously,

  795. I hope it's obvious

  796. that James is speaking

  797. about the state

  798. of our souls

  799. with the world.

  800. Our souls must remain

  801. untouched by the stain

  802. of the world.

  803. And he's speaking

  804. of the world

  805. in this sense,

  806. not in the

  807. all-encompassing

  808. general world

  809. but the world

  810. that is in rebellion

  811. against God

  812. and the ways of God

  813. that doesn't accept

  814. God's Son,

  815. Jesus Christ.

  816. And we must watch out

  817. that we don't

  818. become

  819. neutral.

  820. Obviously,

  821. not share,

  822. but the neutrality

  823. is difficult.

  824. That is where

  825. the schemes of the devil

  826. want to sneak in

  827. and let us think

  828. like the world.

  829. We're born into it.

  830. We're born into

  831. actually already

  832. having a carnal mindset.

  833. And praise be to God

  834. that if we're in Christ,

  835. we are daily

  836. being sanctified,

  837. saved from that carnality,

  838. but take heed.

  839. You know,

  840. Corinthians says,

  841. if any man thinks

  842. he stands,

  843. let him take heed

  844. lest he fall.

  845. Okay?

  846. God is saving us,

  847. no doubt.

  848. And we should have

  849. assurance

  850. on God's promises

  851. that he will indeed

  852. cleanse us,

  853. but God does not want

  854. us to be

  855. unaware

  856. and passive.

  857. And so,

  858. that leads me to

  859. the next part of James

  860. where James

  861. starts to begin

  862. his solution

  863. to their problem.

  864. He kind of just went

  865. on a mini saga

  866. of explaining,

  867. diagnosing,

  868. and then rebuking

  869. them hardcore

  870. for what's going on.

  871. And he says

  872. in

  873. verse 6,

  874. right there,

  875. yeah,

  876. verse 6,

  877. but he gives more grace.

  878. Therefore,

  879. it says,

  880. God opposes the proud

  881. but gives grace

  882. to the humble.

  883. This is the first part

  884. of his portion

  885. that we kind of get

  886. a little bit of a lift,

  887. right?

  888. At least on the back

  889. end of that.

  890. He says,

  891. God opposes

  892. the proud

  893. but gives grace

  894. to the humble.

  895. A lot of this

  896. comes from

  897. simply not

  898. knowing God

  899. as he truly is

  900. and

  901. the pride

  902. of life

  903. as 1 John says,

  904. the love of the world,

  905. things like money,

  906. things like just

  907. ways of thinking

  908. that are carnal.

  909. all these things

  910. are desirable

  911. but when we actually

  912. think about God,

  913. we seldom have

  914. a true fear

  915. that extinguishes

  916. our pride.

  917. If we truly

  918. feared the Lord,

  919. we would regard

  920. the ways

  921. and the methods

  922. of the world

  923. as nothing

  924. in comparison

  925. to the ways

  926. of God.

  927. God,

  928. as in the prophets,

  929. I think Isaiah

  930. the prophet says

  931. that

  932. the Lord says

  933. that I

  934. am not like you.

  935. My thoughts,

  936. what I think

  937. as God,

  938. are not your thoughts.

  939. We are not God.

  940. Now a lot of us

  941. may be like,

  942. well duh,

  943. we're not God.

  944. But

  945. we act

  946. as though

  947. we have

  948. the final say,

  949. that we are

  950. the masters

  951. of our own destiny,

  952. so to speak.

  953. We determine

  954. the ways

  955. and methods

  956. of our life.

  957. But let me remind us

  958. that God

  959. is not like us.

  960. Okay?

  961. God is not

  962. like us.

  963. God is not a man

  964. that he should

  965. lie,

  966. the scripture says.

  967. We lie

  968. to ourselves

  969. and are tempted

  970. by the king

  971. of lies,

  972. the devil.

  973. He speaks

  974. and we listen.

  975. Okay?

  976. God is not like us.

  977. God is so far

  978. different from us.

  979. And

  980. make no mistake,

  981. God is condescended

  982. to where we

  983. can know him

  984. and become like us

  985. in the sense that

  986. in the face

  987. of Jesus Christ

  988. that we can know God.

  989. But make no mistake

  990. that God

  991. is not

  992. one of us.

  993. Okay?

  994. God is completely other.

  995. He is completely holy

  996. without stain,

  997. without threat

  998. of neutrality

  999. to the world.

  1000. He would have to

  1001. not be God

  1002. to lay down

  1003. his divine

  1004. nature

  1005. in order to

  1006. be like us.

  1007. And I'm saying

  1008. all these things

  1009. that are the fundamental

  1010. things in Christianity

  1011. that we should

  1012. yes and amen

  1013. and even

  1014. you know

  1015. in the general sense

  1016. we do.

  1017. But I'm reminding us

  1018. because we're forgetful.

  1019. Okay?

  1020. It means that

  1021. all of our

  1022. methods,

  1023. all of our

  1024. principles,

  1025. all of our

  1026. practices,

  1027. beliefs,

  1028. opinions,

  1029. preferences,

  1030. tastes,

  1031. styles,

  1032. must

  1033. in the end

  1034. come into subjection

  1035. and must bow

  1036. prostrate before

1037. the true and living God.

  1038. Okay?

  1039. His name

  1040. is the King

  1041. of Kings.

  1042. And

  1043. he will have that

  1044. written on his thigh

  1045. when he comes.

  1046. We're forgetful.

1047. The reason I bring this up

  1048. is because

  1049. to not

  1050. live and regard

  1051. God as such

  1052. is to be proud.

  1053. Okay?

  1054. James says

  1055. in verse 6,

  1056. but he gives more

  1057. grace.

  1058. Therefore it says

  1059. God opposes the proud

  1060. but gives grace

  1061. to the humble.

  1062. So,

  1063. this is also

  1064. another weighty

  1065. verse.

  1066. God opposes

  1067. the proud.

  1068. God straight up

  1069. opposes our

  1070. prideful selves.

  1071. I don't know

  1072. about you,

  1073. but I do not

  1074. want to be

  1075. opposed by God.

  1076. Even as we

  1077. build this church,

  1078. it would be

  1079. a lot of sorrow

  1080. if in our pride

  1081. God opposed

  1082. Christ's church.

  1083. Lord,

  1084. save us

  1085. and help us

  1086. that we be not

  1087. lifted up

  1088. in our own souls.

  1089. That we not

  1090. care so much

  1091. for the things

  1092. of the world

  1093. or the thoughts

  1094. of men

  1095. that we

  1096. care less

  1097. about the thoughts

  1098. of God.

  1099. God

  1100. So,

  1101. let's really

  1102. consider the

  1103. severity of this.

  1104. It's not merely

  1105. that our spouses

  1106. oppose us,

  1107. our friends

  1108. when we're

  1109. prideful or

  1110. in some general

  1111. way that life

  1112. is of less

  1113. quality and

  1114. worse for us

  1115. because of our

  1116. pride,

  1117. but it's

  1118. actually,

  1119. maybe all those

  1120. things are true,

  1121. but it's actually

  1122. that the almighty

  1123. true and living

  1124. God who created

  1125. us opposes us

  1126. in some way.

  1127. God stands

  1128. against us

  1129. when we're proud.

  1130. You see this

  1131. throughout scripture

  1132. many times.

  1133. I mean,

  1134. you could even

  1135. say that that

  1136. was the origin

  1137. of evil.

  1138. It was the pride

  1139. of Lucifer

  1140. that made him

  1141. be cast down.

  1142. It was the pride

  1143. of Adam and Eve

  1144. in the garden

  1145. that brought

  1146. humanity with

  1147. him into the grave.

  1148. It was the pride

  1149. of Saul

  1150. that he became

  1151. wise in his own

  1152. eyes,

  1153. Samuel said,

  1154. and he lifted

  1155. himself up

  1156. that he was

  1157. removed as

  1158. God's anointed.

  1159. This lives

  1160. very close

  1161. at hand.

  1162. O Christ

  1163. Church,

  1164. may we not

  1165. build God's

  1166. house with

  1167. pride in our

  1168. hearts,

  1169. for God

  1170. will not

  1171. build with

  1172. us.

  1173. So what are

  1174. some examples

  1175. of pride?

  1176. There's so many

  1177. examples of

  1178. pride.

  1179. When I was

  1180. praying

  1181. specifically for

  1182. our body

  1183. and the Lord

  1184. to speak,

  1185. like,

  1186. Lord,

  1187. if you

  1188. would convict

  1189. us of this

  1190. sin of

  1191. elevation and

  1192. loftiness in

  1193. our own

  1194. selves and in

  1195. our own

  1196. pride,

  1197. what would

  1198. it be?

  1199. And a couple

  1200. things came to

  1201. mind that I

  1202. think maybe

  1203. aren't concrete

  1204. but could be

  1205. for our body.

  1206. One of them

  1207. is when we

  1208. have a culture

  1209. that speaks

  1210. the truth in

  1211. love,

  1212. as we should,

  1213. or we

  1214. confront one

  1215. another as

  1216. we should,

  1217. there's

  1218. kind of two

  1219. acting parts

  1220. in that

  1221. equation.

  1222. One is the

  1223. deliverer,

  1224. right?

  1225. Pride in

  1226. bringing the

  1227. confrontation,

  1228. pride in

  1229. getting it

  1230. across,

  1231. right?

  1232. Trusting in

  1233. yourself to

  1234. make something

  1235. happen,

  1236. right?

  1237. So that's

  1238. pride in the

  1239. deliverer.

  1240. But also,

  1241. let's say

  1242. there is

  1243. true speaking

  1244. the truth in

  1245. love.

  1246. So that is

  1247. without pride.

  1248. That's truly

  1249. loving the

  1250. person,

  1251. truly caring

  1252. for them.

  1253. But then

  1254. there's the

  1255. other side

  1256. of the

  1257. reception,

  1258. the receiver

  1259. of the

  1260. word.

  1261. Oftentimes

  1262. what can

  1263. happen,

  1264. I think

  1265. it's always

  1266. the case

  1267. where I'm

  1268. tempted when

  1269. I'm confronted

  1270. with pride,

  1271. is to

  1272. immediately

  1273. be offended.

  1274. Immediately

  1275. say,

  1276. you know,

  1277. you're wrong,

  1278. or even

  1279. if you're

  1280. right,

  1281. you're still

  1282. wrong.

  1283. You know,

  1284. kind of

  1285. attitude.

  1286. A type

  1287. of cringe

  1288. that pushes

  1289. you to

  1290. go with

  1291. your passions,

  1292. right?

  1293. And I

  1294. think this

  1295. is a way

  1296. that God

  1297. would warn

  1298. us as a

  1299. church when

  1300. we are

  1301. confronted,

  1302. even with

  1303. small things,

  1304. seemingly

  1305. small things,

  1306. not to be

  1307. lifted up

  1308. in our

  1309. pride,

  1310. so as

  1311. not to

  1312. receive

  1313. what the

  1314. Lord might

  1315. be saying.

  1316. Okay?

  1317. It might

  1318. seem like

  1319. on the

  1320. outside,

  1321. like,

  1322. everything

  1323. can be

  1324. cordial and

  1325. temperate and

  1326. good,

  1327. but examine

  1328. our hearts

  1329. with how we

  1330. actually believe

  1331. when someone

  1332. comes to us

  1333. and say,

  1334. hey,

  1335. I think

  1336. this might

  1337. be a little

  1338. off,

  1339. or I think

  1340. there might

  1341. be,

  1342. maybe even

  1343. not like

  1344. straight up

  1345. confrontation

  1346. of sin

  1347. per se,

  1348. but maybe

  1349. even just

  1350. bringing up

  1351. our personal

  1352. ways,

  1353. bringing up

  1354. a better

  1355. method of

  1356. something,

  1357. a better

  1358. way of

  1359. doing

  1360. things.

  1361. If we

  1362. bring something

  1363. up and say,

  1364. hey,

  1365. I think it

  1366. would be best

  1367. to do

  1368. something this

  1369. way,

  1370. X,

  1371. Y,

  1372. and Z,

  1373. insert your

  1374. own scenario,

  1375. and the

  1376. other person

  1377. is just like,

  1378. nah,

  1379. my way is

  1380. better,

  1381. kind of

  1382. reaction in

  1383. your heart,

  1384. or,

  1385. this guy

  1386. doesn't know

  1387. what he's

  1388. talking about,

  1389. like,

  1390. I think

  1391. I'm,

  1392. you know,

  1393. my way is

  1394. better,

  1395. and your

  1396. way might

  1397. be better,

  1398. but your

  1399. heart is

  1400. not,

  1401. okay,

  1402. and watch

  1403. out lest

  1404. we lift

  1405. ourselves up,

  1406. even in

  1407. the small

  1408. things,

  1409. even in

  1410. the ways

  1411. and the

  1412. methods

  1413. and the

  1414. principles,

  1415. okay,

  1416. the Lord

  1417. stands

  1418. against the

  1419. pride of

  1420. our hearts,

  1421. and so,

  1422. are we

  1423. immediately

  1424. offended,

  1425. do we

  1426. stay offended,

  1427. do we

  1428. provide

  1429. ourselves

  1430. with a

  1431. sort of

  1432. purgatory,

  1433. a time

  1434. where,

  1435. you know,

  1436. I'm offended

  1437. until I'm

  1438. not,

  1439. you know,

  1440. a certain

  1441. amount of

  1442. time passed,

  1443. or my

  1444. relationship's

  1445. bad right now,

  1446. but it'll get

  1447. good type of

  1448. attitude,

  1449. it's like,

  1450. no,

  1451. make it right,

  1452. confess your

  1453. sin,

  1454. resist your

  1455. sin,

  1456. resist those

  1457. feelings that

  1458. rise up

  1459. within you,

  1460. okay,

  1461. we're all

  1462. susceptible to

  1463. this,

  1464. I know

  1465. myself that

  1466. I'm tempted

  1467. many times

  1468. to be

  1469. offended,

  1470. and to

  1471. think,

  1472. to elevate

  1473. my way

  1474. above others,

  1475. and God

  1476. forgive me,

  1477. and give me a

  1478. heart after

  1479. his,

  1480. lack of

  1481. submission

  1482. to God,

  1483. or the

  1484. authority that

  1485. God has

  1486. appointed,

  1487. either authority

  1488. in the church,

  1489. or authority

  1490. in the home,

  1491. husbands,

  1492. and wives

  1493. that relationship,

  1494. one of the

  1495. worst,

  1496. one of the

  1497. worst things

  1498. to be

  1499. is a

  1500. person in

  1501. authority

  1502. that although

  1503. someone

  1504. submits to

  1505. your authority

  1506. and yet

  1507. disagrees,

  1508. is kind of

  1509. begrudgingly

  1510. goes along

  1511. in that

  1512. sort of

  1513. submission.

  1514. That's not

  1515. submission,

  1516. because full

  1517. submission actually

  1518. says,

  1519. I'm stating

  1520. what I

  1521. disagree,

  1522. if it's not,

  1523. you know,

  1524. obviously sin,

  1525. and things that

  1526. God tells you

  1527. to oppose,

  1528. but if it's

  1529. mainly things

  1530. that you have

  1531. differing opinions,

  1532. methods,

  1533. principles,

  1534. one of the

  1535. things that's

  1536. the worst

  1537. is when

  1538. you say,

  1539. you know what,

  1540. I'll go along

  1541. with you because

  1542. you're the guy

  1543. in authority,

  1544. you're my

  1545. husband,

  1546. but I'm not

  1547. going to be

  1548. happy the

  1549. whole time.

  1550. I'm just

  1551. going to go

  1552. along with

  1553. you because

  1554. I have to,

  1555. and you know

  1556. what,

  1557. I disagree,

  1558. so I don't

  1559. have to be

  1560. happy about

  1561. it.

  1562. Well,

  1563. that's not

  1564. real submission.

  1565. That's simply

  1566. trying to

  1567. appease God

  1568. and the

  1569. person you're

  1570. under just

  1571. to get

  1572. by,

  1573. and the

  1574. Lord wants

  1575. us actually

  1576. to submit

  1577. with joy,

  1578. to say,

  1579. you know what,

  1580. this is not

  1581. on me.

  1582. God has

  1583. appointed the

  1584. authorities that

  1585. be,

  1586. and I am

  1587. going to

  1588. champion their

  1589. way,

  1590. even though I

  1591. disagree,

  1592. even though it's

  1593. not how I

  1594. want it,

  1595. but I will

  1596. with joy

  1597. support them

  1598. because in

  1599. doing so,

  1600. I am

  1601. obeying the

  1602. Lord.

  1603. And when we

  1604. say we have

  1605. submission,

  1606. when we say

  1607. we,

  1608. you know,

  1609. we are

  1610. obeying,

  1611. when in

  1612. reality our

  1613. hearts are

  1614. far from

  1615. obedience,

  1616. we betray

  1617. our own

  1618. selves and

  1619. the Lord.

  1620. Another area

  1621. I think pride

  1622. can sneak

  1623. in,

  1624. or maybe

  1625. just,

  1626. this is a

  1627. little bit

  1628. at a

  1629. different

  1630. angle,

  1631. but discounting

  1632. yourself and

  1633. your gifting.

  1634. We have

  1635. some exceptional

  1636. people in

  1637. this room,

  1638. exceptionally

  1639. gifted people

  1640. by the

  1641. Lord.

  1642. the Lord

  1643. has given

  1644. people gifts

  1645. in this

  1646. room.

  1647. And I

  1648. think

  1649. sometimes

  1650. we can

  1651. discount

  1652. ourselves

  1653. and say,

  1654. no,

  1655. the Lord,

  1656. you know,

  1657. the Lord

  1658. uses people,

  1659. but probably

  1660. not so much

  1661. me,

  1662. and I'm

  1663. fine with

  1664. that,

  1665. and maybe

  1666. I'll just

  1667. kind of

  1668. just sit

  1669. my whole

  1670. life type

  1671. of thing.

  1672. that sounds

  1673. slightly

  1674. humble,

  1675. but the

  1676. problem is

  1677. if the

  1678. Lord gifts

  1679. you,

  1680. if it's

  1681. the Lord

  1682. who gives

  1683. and you

  1684. say,

  1685. no,

  1686. I won't,

  1687. you can

  1688. see the

  1689. pride in

  1690. that,

  1691. right?

  1692. You can

  1693. see the

  1694. disobedient

  1695. aspect towards

  1696. how the

  1697. Lord gifts

  1698. us.

  1699. And so

  1700. don't

  1701. discount

  1702. yourself.

  1703. If the

  1704. Spirit of

  1705. God truly

  1706. lives in

  1707. us,

  1708. then we

  1709. will want

  1710. His Spirit

  1711. to be

  1712. dispensed

  1713. from us.

  1714. Okay?

  1715. And so

  1716. where are we

  1717. at?

  1718. I think I'm

  1719. still on

  1720. verse 6.

  1721. It says,

  1722. God opposes

  1723. the proud,

  1724. but gives

  1725. grace to

  1726. the humble.

  1727. Submit

  1728. yourselves

  1729. therefore to

  1730. God,

  1731. resist the

  1732. devil,

  1733. and he

  1734. will flee

  1735. from you.

  1736. Draw near to

  1737. God,

  1738. and he

  1739. will draw

  1740. near to

  1741. you.

  1742. Cleanse

  1743. your hands,

  1744. you sinners.

  1745. Purify

  1746. your hearts,

  1747. you double-minded.

  1748. So,

  1749. he opposes

  1750. the proud,

  1751. but he

  1752. gives grace

  1753. to the

  1754. humble.

  1755. Now we're

  1756. getting into

  1757. the good

  1758. news of

  1759. this passage,

  1760. which James

  1761. prepares us

  1762. for,

  1763. I think,

  1764. in exposing.

  1765. Every time

  1766. the gospel

  1767. comes with

  1768. good news,

  1769. it always

  1770. comes with

  1771. conviction,

  1772. with a

  1773. type of

  1774. repentance.

  1775. If the

  1776. gospel is

  1777. good news

  1778. to you,

  1779. but your

  1780. sin is

  1781. nowhere in

  1782. sight,

  1783. and there's

  1784. no evidence

  1785. of repentance,

  1786. it's merely

  1787. good news.

  1788. It's not the

  1789. gospel.

  1790. And so,

  1791. he says,

  1792. God opposes

  1793. the proud,

  1794. but he gives

  1795. grace to the

  1796. humble.

  1797. So when we

  1798. know that

  1799. we're sinners,

  1800. when we know

  1801. that we lift

  1802. ourselves up,

  1803. what do we

  1804. do?

  1805. Do we stay

  1806. there,

  1807. like I said,

  1808. or do we

  1809. humble

  1810. ourselves?

  1811. Humility is

  1812. always way

  1813. easier and

  1814. way better.

  1815. I mean,

  1816. easier in the

  1817. sense where

  1818. it's not easy

  1819. that you have

  1820. to deny your

  1821. pride,

  1822. because that's

  1823. hard to do,

  1824. but it always

  1825. goes better.

  1826. It always is

  1827. easier in the

  1828. sense where

  1829. humility,

  1830. when someone

  1831. genuinely

  1832. confronts you,

  1833. for example,

  1834. and says,

  1835. hey,

  1836. you sinned in

  1837. this area,

  1838. or hey,

  1839. you're not

  1840. great at this,

  1841. you know,

  1842. speaks the truth

  1843. and love to

  1844. you,

  1845. and you have

  1846. an option.

  1847. Do I be

  1848. lifted up?

  1849. Do I entertain

  1850. my pride and

  1851. offense?

  1852. Or do I say,

  1853. this is an

  1854. opportunity for

  1855. me to be

  1856. humble?

  1857. I can be

  1858. humble right

  1859. now.

  1860. I can say,

  1861. you're right,

  1862. I did do

  1863. that,

  1864. or yes,

  1865. that's not

  1866. my strength.

  1867. Thank you

  1868. for bringing

  1869. this to me.

  1870. I'll pray

  1871. about this,

  1872. you can pray

  1873. for me,

  1874. and I'm

  1875. going to

  1876. seek the

  1877. Lord and

  1878. be better.

  1879. That's

  1880. humility.

  1881. That's

  1882. humility.

  1883. That always

  1884. brings the

  1885. Lord into

  1886. it.

  1887. There's no

  1888. opposition from

  1889. God on that.

  1890. God does

  1891. not oppose

  1892. that person

  1893. that bows

  1894. and says,

  1895. Lord,

  1896. you know

  1897. you're right,

  1898. I am

  1899. but a

  1900. man,

  1901. and you

  1902. are

  1903. God.

  1904. Okay?

  1905. James

  1906. in verse

  1907. 7 says,

  1908. submit

  1909. yourselves

  1910. therefore

  1911. to God.

  1912. After he

  1913. says all

  1914. this,

  1915. he says,

  1916. what do

  1917. we do

  1918. now?

  1919. We

  1920. submit.

  1921. We

  1922. come

  1923. underneath

  1924. the

  1925. Lord.

  1926. We

  1927. agree

  1928. with

  1929. the

  1930. Lord.

  1931. We

  1932. agree

  1933. that

  1934. only

  1935. the

  1936. Lord

  1937. is

  1938. right.

  1939. Submit

  1940. yourselves

  1941. therefore

  1942. to

  1943. God.

  1944. Resist

  1945. the

  1946. devil

  1947. and

  1948. he

  1949. will

  1950. flee

  1951. from

  1952. you.

  1953. The

  1954. author

  1955. of

  1956. pride

  1957. you might

  1958. even

  1959. say,

  1960. the devil

  1961. tempts us

  1962. to be

  1963. proud,

  1964. tempts us

  1965. to come

  1966. in,

  1967. agrees and

  1968. partners with

  1969. our flesh

  1970. to lift

  1971. us up.

  1972. James

  1973. says,

  1974. resist him

  1975. and he'll

  1976. leave.

  1977. That's

  1978. a promise.

  1979. If you

  1980. say,

  1981. I will

  1982. be

  1983. humble,

  1984. even

  1985. though

  1986. it's

  1987. painful,

  1988. even

  1989. though

  1990. my

  1991. offense

  1992. is

  1993. real

  1994. and

  1995. strong,

  1996. I

  1997. will

  1998. submit

  1999. to

  2000. the

  2001. Lord

  2002. and

  2003. Satan

  2004. must

  2005. be

  2006. gone.

  2007. He

  2008. will

  2009. flee

  2010. from

  2011. that

  2012. person.

  2013. Verse

  2014. 8,

  2015. draw near

  2016. to God

  2017. and he

  2018. will

  2019. draw near

  2020. to

  2021. you.

  2022. Cleanse

  2023. your hands

  2024. you

  2025. sinners

  2026. and

  2027. purify

  2028. your

  2029. hearts

  2030. you

  2031. double

  2032. minded.

  2033. This is

  2034. one of

  2035. my

  2036. favorite

  2037. verses

  2038. in

  2039. James,

  2040. honestly,

  2041. in the

  2042. whole

  2043. Bible.

  2044. It's

  2045. a

  2046. promise.

  2047. If we

  2048. draw

  2049. near

  2050. to

  2051. God,

  2052. he

  2053. will

  2054. draw

  2055. near

  2056. to

  2057. us.

  2058. Okay?

  2059. How many

  2060. times

  2061. are we

  2062. tempted

  2063. to

  2064. feel

  2065. distant

  2066. from

  2067. the

  2068. Lord,

  2069. alienated

  2070. from

  2071. God,

  2072. when the

  2073. scripture

  2074. says,

  2075. in fact,

  2076. that if

  2077. we

  2078. were in

  2079. Christ,

  2080. we

  2081. were

  2082. once

  2083. alienated,

  2084. Ephesians

  2085. says,

  2086. but now

  2087. we

  2088. have

  2089. been

  2090. brought

  2091. near.

  2092. Okay?

  2093. Draw

  2094. near to

  2095. God,

  2096. and he

  2097. will

  2098. draw

  2099. near

  2100. to

  2101. you.

  2102. Malachi

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  2103. chapter

  2104. 3,

  2105. 7

  2106. says,

  2107. return

  2108. to

  2109. me,

  2110. Lord

  2111. speaks

  2112. to

  2113. Israel,

  2114. return

  2115. to

  2116. me,

  2117. and I

  2118. will

  2119. return

  2120. to

  2121. you,

  2122. says

  2123. the

  2124. Lord

  2125. of

  2126. hosts.

  2127. Similar

  2128. thing,

  2129. right?

  2130. And

  2131. someone

  2132. will

  2133. say

  2134. to

  2135. me,

  2136. well,

  2137. how

  2138. do

  2139. I

  2140. draw

  2141. near

  2142. to

  2143. God?

  2144. How

  2145. do

  2146. you

  2147. do

  2148. that?

  2149. You

  2150. know,

  2151. like,

  2152. what's

  2153. the

  2154. way?

  2155. And

  2156. the

  2157. way

  2158. is

  2159. through

  2160. the

  2161. gospel.

  2162. At

  2163. one

  2164. time,

  2165. we

  2166. were

  2167. alienated,

  2168. far

  2169. from

  2170. God,

  2171. but

  2172. now,

  2173. you

  2174. don't

  2175. have

  2176. to,

  2177. there's

  2178. no amount

  2179. of

  2180. works

  2181. you

  2182. could

  2183. do,

  2184. no

  2185. amount

  2186. of

  2187. sacrifices

  2188. to

  2189. offer,

  2190. there

  2191. is

  2192. no

  2193. holy

  2194. site

  2195. that

  2196. you

  2197. could

  2198. travel

  2199. to

  2200. and

  2201. do

  2202. a

  2203. pilgrimage

  2204. to.

  2205. In

  2206. fact,

  2207. actually,

  2208. you

  2209. can

  2210. come

  2211. to

  2212. the

  2213. Lord

  2214. now,

  2215. presently.

  2216. That's

  2217. the

  2218. good news

  2219. of the

  2220. gospel,

  2221. is that

  2222. you

  2223. don't

  2224. have

  2225. to

  2226. rely

  2227. on

  2228. your

  2229. good

  2230. works,

  2231. you

  2232. don't

  2233. have

  2234. to

  2235. rely

  2236. on

  2237. someone

  2238. else

  2239. to

  2240. mediate

  2241. for

  2242. you,

  2243. but

  2244. the

  2245. gospel

  2246. preaches

  2247. to our

  2248. hearts

  2249. and

  2250. says,

  2251. you

  2252. can

  2253. draw

  2254. near

  2255. to

  2256. God

  2257. now,

  2258. presently.

  2259. And

  2260. someone

  2261. will

  2262. say,

  2263. how do

  2264. I

  2265. draw

  2266. near

  2267. to

  2268. God

  2269. now?

  2270. Well,

  2271. thankfully

  2272. the Bible

  2273. explains to

  2274. us how.

  2275. In

  2276. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:6

  2277. chapter

  2278. 11

  2279. verse

  2280. 6

  2281. says,

  2282. and

  2283. without

  2284. whoever

  2285. would

  2286. draw

  2287. near

  2288. to

  2289. God,

  2290. okay,

  2291. for

  2292. whoever

  2293. would

  2294. draw

  2295. near

  2296. to

  2297. God

  2298. must

  2299. believe

  2300. that

  2301. he

  2302. exists

  2303. and

  2304. that

  2305. he

  2306. rewards

  2307. those

  2308. who

  2309. seek

  2310. him.

  2311. So

  2312. how do

  2313. we

  2314. draw

  2315. near

  2316. to

  2317. God?

  2318. Whoever

  2319. would

  2320. draw

  2321. near

  2322. to

  2323. God,

  2324. you

  2325. must

  2326. believe

  2327. that

  2328. you

  2329. are

  2330. drawing

  2331. near

  2332. to

  2333. a

  2334. God

  2335. who

  2336. is

  2337. there,

  2338. who

  2339. is

  2340. approachable,

  2341. and

  2342. you

  2343. must

  2344. expect

  2345. something

  2346. from

  2347. him,

  2348. that

  2349. he

  2350. would

  2351. give

  2352. you

  2353. something.

  2354. You

  2355. can

  2356. see

  2357. that

  2358. throughout

  2359. all

  2360. of

  2361. James

  2362. speaking.

  2363. You

  2364. don't

  2365. have

  2366. because

  2367. you

  2368. don't

  2369. ask.

  2370. Go

  2371. get

  2372. what

  2373. the

  2374. Lord

  2375. has.

  2376. If

  2377. you

  2378. draw

  2379. near

  2380. to

  2381. the

  2382. Lord

  2383. and

  2384. believe

  2385. that

  2386. he

  2387. will

  2388. give

  2389. it

  2390. to

  2391. you,

  2392. in

  2393. other

  2394. words,

  2395. he

  2396. rewards

  2397. those

  2398. who

  2399. seek

  2400. him,

  2401. then

  2402. you

  2403. will

  2404. draw

  2405. near.

  2406. He

  2407. will

  2408. give

  2409. it

  2410. to

  2411. you.

  2412. And

  2413. so

  2414. you

  2415. can't

  2416. draw

  2417. near

  2418. to

  2419. God

  2420. unless

  2421. you

  2422. believe

  2423. that

  2424. he

  2425. exists.

  2426. You

  2427. can't

  2428. draw

  2429. near

  2430. to

  2431. God

  2432. if

  2433. you

  2434. believe

  2435. that

  2436. he

  2437. will

  2438. give

  2439. you

  2440. nothing.

  2441. You

  2442. have

  2443. to

  2444. draw

  2445. near

  2446. because

  2447. you

  2448. know

  2449. that

  2450. he

  2451. is

  2452. good

  2453. essentially.

  2454. And

  2455. when we

  2456. draw

  2457. near

  2458. to

  2459. God

  2460. we

  2461. should

  2462. do

  2463. what

  2464. the

  2465. apostle

  2466. did

  2467. what

  2468. Paul

  2469. did

  2470. in

  2471. Romans

  2472. 8.

  2473. He

  2474. says

  2475. in

  2476. verse

  2477. 32

  2478. he

  2479. who

  2480. did

  2481. not

  2482. spare

  2483. His

  2484. own

  2485. son

  2486. but

  2487. gave

  2488. him

  2489. up

  2490. for

  2491. us

  2492. all

  2493. !

  2494. How

  2495. things

  2496. okay

  2497. he

  2498. will

  2499. give

  2500. us

  2501. all

  2502. things

  2503. if

  2504. we

  2505. draw

  2506. near

  2507. to

  2508. him

  2509. through

  2510. faith.

  2511. In

  2512. Luke 11

  2513. he

  2514. says

  2515. for

  2516. whoever

  2517. asks

  2518. receives

  2519. and

  2520. the one

  2521. who

  2522. seeks

  2523. finds

  2524. and

  2525. to

  2526. the

  2527. one

  2528. who

  2529. knocks

  2530. it

  2531. will

  2532. be

  2533. open

  2534. what

  2535. father

  2536. among

  2537. you

  2538. if

  2539. his

  2540. son

  2541. asks

  2542. for

  2543. fish

  2544. will

  2545. instead

  2546. give

  2547. him

  2548. a

  2549. serpent

  2550. or

  2551. if

  2552. he

  2553. asks

  2554. for

  2555. an

  2556. egg

  2557. will

  2558. give

  2559. him

  2560. a

  2561. scorpion

  2562. if

  2563. you

  2564. then

  2565. who

  2566. are

  2567. evil

  2568. know

  2569. how

  2570. to

  2571. give

  2572. good

  2573. gifts

  2574. to

  2575. your

  2576. children

  2577. how

  2578. much

  2579. more

  2580. will

  2581. your

  2582. heavenly

  2583. father

  2584. give

  2585. the

  2586. holy

  2587. spirit

  2588. to

  2589. those

  2590. who

  2591. ask

  2592. him

  2593. and

  2594. so

  2595. James

  2596. is

  2597. bringing

  2598. it

  2599. all

  2600. the

  2601. way

  2602. back

  2603. to

  2604. true

  2605. repentance

  2606. if

  2607. we

  2608. find

  2609. ourselves

  2610. proud

  2611. if

  2612. we

  2613. find

  2614. ourselves

  2615. lifted

  2616. up

  2617. he

  2618. says

  2619. draw

  2620. near

  2621. to

  2622. God

  2623. he

  2624. says

  2625. to

  2626. cleanse

  2627. your

  2628. hands

  2629. okay

  2630. this

  2631. means

  2632. we

  2633. actually

  2634. have

  2635. about

  2636. our

  2637. sin

  2638. if

  2639. you

  2640. find

  2641. yourself

  2642. after

  2643. you

  2644. sin

  2645. saying

  2646. it's

  2647. all

  2648. good

  2649. God

  2650. forgives

  2651. me

  2652. moving

  2653. on

  2654. almost

  2655. as if

  2656. you

  2657. forget

  2658. God

  2659. I

  2660. think

  2661. James

  2662. is

  2663. kind

  2664. of

  2665. like

  2666. not

  2667. true

  2668. repentance

  2669. okay

  2670. we're

  2671. not

  2672. into

  2673. condemnation

  2674. we're

  2675. not

  2676. into

  2677. beating

  2678. yourself

  2679. up

  2680. but

  2681. the

  2682. Lord

  2683. wants

  2684. us

  2685. to

  2686. be

  2687. serious

  2688. about

  2689. our

  2690. sin

  2691. he

  2692. wants

  2693. us

  2694. to

  2695. genuinely

  2696. cleanse

  2697. our

  2698. hands

  2699. he

  2700. says

  2701. let

  2702. your

  2703. laughter

  2704. be

  2705. turned

  2706. to

  2707. gloom

  2708. in

  2709. other

  2710. words

  2711. we

  2712. have

  2713. to

  2714. be

  2715. seriously

  2716. sorrowful

  2717. that

  2718. we

  2719. have

  2720. sinned

  2721. against

  2722. the

  2723. holy

  2724. God

  2725. and

  2726. then

  2727. the

  2728. promise

  2729. comes

  2730. in

  2731. verse

  2732. 10

  2733. humble

  2734. yourselves

  2735. before

  2736. the

  2737. Lord

  2738. and

  2739. he

  2740. will

  2741. exalt

  2742. you

  2743. or

  2744. in

  2745. other

  2746. words

  2747. and

  2748. he

  2749. will

  2750. lift

  2751. you

  2752. up

  2753. Jesus

  2754. says

  2755. whoever

  2756. exalts

  2757. himself

  2758. will

  2759. be

  2760. humbled

  2761. !

  2762. God

  2763. will

  2764. come

  2765. with

  2766. sincerity

  2767. in

  2768. our

  2769. hearts

  2770. and

  2771. we

  2772. could

  2773. ask

  2774. the

  2775. Lord

  2776. earnestly

  2777. to

  2778. cleanse

  2779. us

  2780. in

  2781. our

  2782. humility

  2783. and

  2784. he

  2785. will

  2786. and

  2787. so

  2788. I

  2789. would

  2790. exhort

  2791. you

  2792. guys

  2793. if

  2794. any

  2795. of

  2796. you

  2797. be

  2798. in

  2799. pride

  2800. in

  2801. any

  2802. way

  2803. even

  2804. if

  2805. you

  2806. deem

  2807. it

  2808. to

  2809. be

  2810. small

  2811. do

  2812. not

  2813. deem

  2814. it

  2815. small

  2816. enough

  2817. so

  2818. that

  2819. you

  2820. do

  2821. nothing

  2822. repent

  2823. cleanse

  2824. your

  2825. hands

  2826. and ask

  2827. the

  2828. Lord

  2829. to

  2830. forgive

  2831. you

  2832. draw

  2833. near

  2834. to

  2835. him

  2836. who

  2837. gives

  2838. grace

  2839. and

  2840. he

  2841. will

  2842. draw

  2843. near

  2844. to

  2845. you

  2846. I

  2847. pray

  2848. that

  2849. Christ's

  2850. church
