  1. The laborers are few.

  2. The laborers are few.

  3. If you guys know where that comes from,

  4. of the necessity of us to do work,

  5. to build the church that God has given himself for.

  6. And here Jesus is saying that,

  7. although the harvest is plentiful,

  8. the laborers are few.

  9. And so again, it's this call to be laborers,

  10. to be workers.

  11. And are we willing to do the work?

  12. Are we willing to be consistent in doing the work?

  13. And this was a theme that he had to point out.

  14. And with a plentiful harvest,

  15. the last thing you would ever want

  16. with a plentiful harvest would be few workers.

  17. That's a travesty, right?

  18. You're looking out into the fields to say,

  19. oh my goodness, look at this.

  20. We got a great harvest here.

  21. But I don't have anybody to work it, right?

  22. That's not the picture you ever want to see.

  23. And yet this is the picture Jesus is painting.

  24. He's saying this.

  25. He's saying, hey, the harvest,

  26. that's not the issue.

  27. That's not the problem.

  28. And isn't that,

  29. how often do we kind of in our mind frame it that way?

  30. It's just so hard, you know,

  31. just like people aren't getting saved.

  32. You know, it's like we preach the gospel

  33. and just doesn't seem to be a harvest.

  34. But that's not the picture that Jesus paints, right?

  35. He paints a different picture.

  36. He says, actually, the harvest,

  37. that part of it, it's plentiful.

  38. The harvest is plentiful.

  39. The problem is that the workers are few.

  40. The problem is that the workers are few.

  41. And so he says, pray earnestly

  42. into the Lord of the harvest

  43. to send out labors into his harvest field.

  44. And we should be praying,

  45. God, I want to be that labor.

  46. I want to be that worker.

  47. But, you know, we love the concept of harvest.

  48. We don't always love the concept of work, right?

  49. I mean, the harvest being had,

  50. the harvest coming in, that's great.

  51. But the work that it takes to get there,

  52. that's not always something that maybe we're running to.

  53. And that, again, he's saying that that is the case.

  54. You know, it's easy to talk about the harvest,

  55. but who wants to actually do the work?

  56. And it requires work.

  57. It requires sacrifice.

  58. It requires us getting out of our comfort zone.

  59. And this concept of work

  60. is really just one of these kind of rules of life

  61. that you cannot supersede,

  62. no matter how hard you try.

  63. It's the law of reaping and sowing, right?

  64. Galatians 6, 7 to 10 lays this out.

  65. Again, another familiar verse for you guys.

  66. Do not be deceived.

  67. God is not mocked.

  68. For whatever one sows, that he will also reap.

  69. Okay?

  70. And he says, he doesn't just say,

  71. whatever one sows, that he will also reap.

  72. That's that law that I'm talking about.

  73. But before that,

  74. he gives that little important point there.

  75. He says, don't be deceived.

  76. Or don't be tricked.

  77. Don't be fooled.

  78. Don't be fooled into thinking

  79. you can get something

  80. without putting in the work, right?

  81. God cannot be mocked.

  82. It's not like you can trick him

  83. into changing this law of the universe.

  84. Don't be tricked.

  85. Don't be fooled.

  86. Don't be deceived.

  87. God is not mocked.

  88. For whatever one sows, he will also reap.

  89. What you put in,

  90. you're going to get out

  91. when it comes to the work.

  92. For the one who sows to his own flesh

  93. will from the flesh

  94. reap corruption.

  95. But the one who sows to the spirit

  96. will from the spirit reap eternal life.

  97. Okay?

  98. So you can't flip the script.

  99. You can't change this.

  100. This is the way things are.

  101. You, kind of the old adage,

  102. you get what you pay for kind of thing, right?

  103. Like if you sow to your flesh,

  104. you're going to reap corruption, right?

  105. That's the way it goes.

  106. But if you sow to the spirit,

  107. from the spirit you'll reap eternal life.

  108. And then he says,

  109. then he gives a practical

  110. of what this looks like.

  111. He says then in verse 9,

  112. let us not grow weary of doing good.

  113. For in due season,

  114. we will reap.

  115. If,

  116. if,

  117. conditional statement,

  118. if we don't give up.

  119. If we don't give up.

  120. Again,

  121. this is kind of a law of the universe.

  122. This is the way things work.

  123. But it's also a promise as well.

  124. If you don't get weary in doing good,

  125. then you keep going.

  126. In due season,

  127. you will reap if you don't give up.

  128. And then,

  129. so then he gives another practical

  130. right there in verse 10.

  131. It says,

  132. so then,

  133. in light of this fact,

  134. in light of this rule,

  135. in light of this kind of law of the universe,

  136. as we have opportunity,

  137. let us do good to everyone

  138. and especially to those

  139. who are of the household of faith.

  140. Okay?

  141. So in light of this,

  142. we got to keep going.

  143. We got to,

  144. we can't give up.

  145. And as someone

  146. who's been a part of

  147. multiple church plants

  148. and knows that those early years

  149. are the time

  150. when you feel like giving up.

  151. Right?

  152. That those early years

  153. are the times

  154. when you feel like,

  155. man,

  156. it's kind of weary doing good.

  157. It's kind of weary doing the work.

  158. I thought maybe it would be

  159. a little bit more fruitful.

  160. You know,

  161. this whole in due season thing.

  162. What is this in due season?

  163. Can't we just have it now?

  164. Like,

  165. can't I just have the result

  166. of the work now?

  167. But God says no,

  168. in due season.

  169. The timing is His.

  170. But,

  171. you don't know

  172. when that season's going to be.

  173. You don't know

  174. when it's going to come,

  175. but you do know this.

  176. You will reap.

  177. You will reap.

  178. Not maybe you'll reap.

  179. Not hopefully you'll reap.

  180. You will reap

  181. if you don't give up.

  182. That's a promise.

  183. Okay?

  184. That's a promise from God.

  185. You can count on that.

  186. You can count on that.

  187. Are you counting on that?

  188. Is that informing

  189. your passion?

  190. Your fervor?

  191. Your zeal?

  192. Your work ethic?

  193. Is this promise informing it?

  194. Or,

  195. are we moved

  196. by our eyes seeing

  197. the weariness

  198. of the work

  199. and maybe tempted

  200. to give up a little bit?

  201. But,

  202. I don't sense

  203. that anyone has this,

  204. anyone in this room

  205. that I've met

  206. has this sense of

  207. giving up altogether.

  208. But,

  209. you can kind of give up.

  210. You can give up

  211. on little things.

  212. You can give up

  213. with some of the effort,

  214. some of the work,

  215. some of the work ethic.

  216. And,

  217. that's still a form

  218. of giving up.

  219. It's still a form

  220. of letting up

  221. from the work

  222. that's necessary

  223. to reap a harvest.

  224. And so,

  225. when he says,

  226. don't give up,

  227. I don't think it only includes

  228. like,

  229. don't completely give up.

  230. I think it includes

  231. somewhat giving up,

  232. letting up,

  233. kind of drawing back

  234. from the work

  235. that's necessary.

  236. And so,

  237. I want to look at this concept

  238. a little bit more

  239. and really just,

  240. there's a,

  241. you know,

  242. the Bible talks a lot

  243. about good works

  244. in a more generic sense,

  245. but then there's this

  246. way more specific phrase

  247. that Paul often uses

  248. called

  249. the work.

  250. Okay?

  251. Paul uses this phrase

  252. the work.

  253. And I don't think

  254. he's speaking

  255. in generic terms,

  256. I think he's speaking

  257. very specifically

  258. about a specific

  259. apostolic work

  260. that he was called to,

  261. that he had fellow workers

  262. with to do

  263. to see

  264. God's kingdom come

  265. on earth as he is in heaven

  266. in such a way

  267. that churches were established.

  268. Lost people were saved,

  269. churches were established,

  270. and he was traveling

  271. all over the place,

  272. and he called this thing

  273. that he was doing

  274. the work.

  275. The work.

  276. Okay?

  277. And I think it all started

  278. in Acts chapter 13

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  279. when God himself

  280. called

  281. Paul and Barnabas.

  282. So in Acts chapter 13,

    Acts 13:2

  283. verse 2,

  284. we see this language

  285. of the work.

  286. It says,

  287. while they were worshiping

  288. the Lord

  289. and fasting,

  290. the Holy Spirit said,

  291. set apart for me

  292. Barnabas and Saul

  293. for the work

  294. to which I have called them.

  295. Okay?

  296. And then you see

  297. all over,

  298. following that,

  299. you see this phrase

  300. coming up,

  301. we're going to look at

  302. some of these verses.

  303. But,

  304. while they were worshiping

  305. the Lord and fasting,

  306. the Holy Spirit said,

  307. set apart for me

  308. Barnabas and Saul

  309. for the work

  310. to which I have called them.

  311. This,

  312. that phrase,

  313. set apart,

  314. I think is important.

  315. Anytime you're going

  316. to do meaningful work

  317. and you actually want

  318. to get something done,

  319. right?

  320. You have to set apart

  321. time to do it.

  322. You have to set apart

  323. tools to do it.

  324. You have to set apart

  325. time,

  326. energy,

  327. talents,

  328. manpower,

  329. whatever it is.

  330. You have to plan that,

  331. right?

  332. You know,

  333. those,

  334. thinking of Michael now

  335. when he's,

  336. you know,

  337. doing electrical work,

  338. if he gets a job,

  339. that's half,

  340. that's half the thing.

  341. Like,

  342. hey,

  343. I got the job.

  344. They hired us.

  345. He's now got to set apart

  346. certain man,

  347. men to do the job.

  348. He's got to make sure

  349. that the time

  350. that is needed

  351. for that job

  352. is set apart.

  353. He's got to make sure

  354. the materials are there.

  355. He's got to make sure

  356. the right materials are there.

  357. He's got to,

  358. all these things

  359. have to be there.

  360. Those things

  361. have to be done

  362. in order for the work

  363. to be done

  364. and in order for the work

  365. to be done well.

  366. And I think sometimes

  367. when we are functioning

  368. in the work

  369. and specifically the work

  370. of planting a church

  371. and establishing a church,

  372. we can sometimes

  373. have more of a

  374. lackadaisical attitude

  375. that just says,

  376. oh yeah,

  377. you know,

  378. doing the work.

  379. Yeah,

  380. of course,

  381. yeah,

  382. I'm doing the work.

  383. For sure,

  384. yeah.

  385. What does that mean?

  386. Well,

  387. you know,

  388. just ministry.

  389. Well,

  390. no,

  391. it's a little more

  392. specific than that.

  393. Like,

  394. you know,

  395. it's,

  396. in order for you

  397. to catch the fish,

  398. you've got to actually

  399. put some bait on the hook

  400. or throw a net

  401. in the water.

  402. Like,

  403. you've got to get the boat

  404. out into the water

  405. where the fish are.

  406. Like,

  407. if you're on land,

  408. you ain't catching no fish.

  409. Like,

  410. you've got to,

  411. we've got to set apart time.

  412. We've got to set apart

  413. resources.

  414. We've got to set apart people

  415. to do the work.

  416. And,

  417. you know as well as I do

  418. that if you don't plan

  419. to do something,

  420. and this could be anything,

  421. just,

  422. and a great example

  423. is just that house project

  424. that's been still there

  425. for all these weeks,

  426. months,

  427. dare I say years,

  428. that you just think,

  429. man,

  430. I want to get to that.

  431. You know,

  432. I know I need to do it.

  433. And,

  434. if you don't set apart time

  435. for that

  436. or resources for that,

  437. does it just happen?

  438. No,

  439. it never does.

  440. Like,

  441. you don't drift into work.

  442. It's not like,

  443. oh,

  444. I had no plan to do this work

  445. and it just got done.

  446. Like,

  447. that doesn't happen.

  448. And it's no different

  449. for the work of the kingdom.

  450. Like,

  451. especially when it comes

  452. to the difficulty

  453. of soul winning.

  454. Especially when it comes

  455. to the difficulty

  456. of building

  457. and establishing

  458. a family

  459. that is called the church.

  460. That's hard work.

  461. And especially when you're building

  462. something out of nothing.

  463. You know,

  464. it's one thing

  465. to do the work

  466. of advancing God's kingdom

  467. and preaching to the lost

  468. in an established church

  469. where everything's

  470. kind of dialed in.

  471. There's a rhythm.

  472. There's an established culture.

  473. There's an established group

  474. of people.

  475. That's one thing.

  476. When we're starting

  477. at that lower ground level,

  478. it requires

  479. a lot more intentionality.

  480. It requires a lot more

  481. being set apart,

  482. so to speak.

  483. So,

  484. basically,

  485. I guess the question

  486. I have for you,

  487. do you have

  488. specific time

  489. set apart for the work

  490. or are you just giving

  491. spare time leftovers

  492. to the church

  493. and to the establishing

  494. of the church

  495. and to the mission

  496. of Christ's church

  497. to seek out lost people

  498. and get on mission

  499. to people?

  500. Is it time set apart

  501. or is it spare time

  502. leftover?

  503. Spare time leftover

  504. is not going to do the trick.

  505. It's not.

  506. And,

  507. if some people

  508. are giving their

  509. spare time leftovers

  510. and some people

  511. are giving their

  512. first fruit

  513. set apart time,

  514. you know what that's

  515. going to do?

  516. That's going to bring

  517. division.

  518. There's not unity in that.

  519. There's not a cohesive

  520. moving forward

  521. and you could subtly,

  522. I hope this doesn't happen,

  523. you could subtly even

  524. stir up a little animosity

  525. in the sense like

  526. kind of the Mary Martha

  527. kind of thing.

  528. Like,

  529. hey Jesus,

  530. you want to tell my sister

  531. to get to work?

  532. Can't you see

  533. I'm doing all this

  534. and they're not

  535. doing anything?

  536. You can start to be

  537. tempted to that

  538. kind of thinking,

  539. right?

  540. It takes work.

  541. It takes work.

  542. And,

  543. this language

  544. that's used

  545. by the Holy Spirit

  546. is set apart.

  547. Well,

  548. God,

  549. you believe

  550. you became part

  551. of this church plant

  552. from the beginning

  553. or maybe some of you

  554. knew come here

  555. and you're thinking,

  556. what did I get

  557. my stuff into?

  558. What have I signed up for?

  559. Well,

  560. I hope you're thinking,

  561. what?

  562. God set us apart

  563. for the work

  564. of establishing a church

  565. and seeing some people

  566. get saved.

  567. That means we have

  568. to set apart time.

  569. That means we have

  570. to set apart resources.

  571. That means we have

  572. to be flexible

  573. and not just give God

  574. our leftovers.

  575. And certainly,

  576. Paul didn't do that.

  577. Certainly,

  578. Barnabas didn't do that.

  579. It's not like they were like,

  580. well,

  581. that's kind of cool,

  582. God.

  583. That's a cool thing.

  584. You know?

  585. He just said we're set apart.

  586. I wonder what that could mean.

  587. Hey,

  588. you guys want to come over

  589. and watch a show?

  590. You know?

  591. I don't think that was

  592. like his response.

  593. He got out there.

  594. He got after it

  595. and showed a kind of

  596. work ethic that

  597. is fairly exemplary,

  598. right?

  599. As we see in the

  600. following scriptures

  601. and such in the book of Acts.

  602. Okay?

  603. So,

  604. are you set apart?

  605. Not just set apart

  606. in the sense you believe

  607. that God's called you,

  608. but in the practical sense.

  609. Are you set apart

  610. for the work

  611. in the sense

  612. that you're setting apart time?

  613. You're setting apart

  614. resources.

  615. You're setting apart

  616. intentional,

  617. strategic time

  618. to reach lost people,

  619. to build family

  620. with one another,

  621. and to create a context

  622. for God's kingdom

  623. to come on earth

  624. as it is in heaven.

  625. Okay?

  626. Later in the book of Acts,

  627. in Acts chapter 15,

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  628. we see this phrase again,

  629. the work,

  630. but here it's in a,

  631. we have more of a negative

  632. context here.

  633. Acts chapter 15,

    Acts 15:37

  634. verse 37,

  635. Paul and Barnabas

  636. are kind of at this

  637. intersection of decision,

  638. like how they're going

  639. to continue the work,

  640. and Barnabas wants

  641. to take his cousin,

  642. John Mark,

  643. with,

  644. and the fact that

  645. he's his cousin,

  646. you see that in some

  647. other part,

  648. maybe gives you a little

  649. insight as to why

  650. Barnabas was after him,

  651. or maybe it's just

  652. because Barnabas

  653. is the son of encouragement

  654. and he just really

  655. has a lot of hope

  656. for people,

  657. and he's just one

  658. of those guys,

  659. you know,

  660. the kind of guy

  661. that is always

  662. cheerleading you

  663. and has hope for guys,

  664. but Paul's not,

  665. not really having it,

  666. right?

  667. It says,

  668. verse 37,

  669. Barnabas wanted

  670. to take with them

  671. John called Mark,

  672. and then verse 38,

  673. Paul thought best

  674. not to take with them

  675. one who had withdrawn

  676. from them in Pamphylia

  677. and had not gone

  678. with them to the work.

  679. Uh-oh.

  680. So,

  681. Paul's like,

  682. hey,

  683. wait a second,

  684. we already took

  685. John Mark with us

  686. and he didn't,

  687. he didn't follow through.

  688. He didn't,

  689. he didn't,

  690. he didn't keep going.

  691. In fact,

  692. the language here

  693. is that he withdrew.

  694. He withdrew from us.

  695. When we're in the thick

  696. of the work,

  697. we're doing the work.

  698. John Mark,

  699. when the going got tough,

  700. John Mark got going.

  701. You know,

  702. he was gone.

  703. And,

  704. um,

  705. I think that phrase

  706. just even withdrawn

  707. and thinking of being,

  708. this concept of being

  709. withdrawn from the work,

  710. I want to ask us too,

  711. especially to those

  712. who've been with us

  713. since the beginning

  714. of Christ Church,

  715. uh,

  716. when you start a church,

  717. there's this sense

  718. of excitement,

  719. sense of,

  720. um,

  721. expectation,

  722. right?

  723. Enthusiasm.

  724. And then,

  725. over time,

  726. one thing that can

  727. subtly happen is

  728. we can subtly

  729. withdraw from the work.

  730. And I want to ask

  731. any of you,

  732. have any of you

  733. withdrawn from the work?

  734. I'm not,

  735. this isn't,

  736. you don't need to raise

  737. your hand or anything.

  738. I mean,

  739. uh,

  740. have any of you,

  741. um,

  742. withdrawn from the work?

  743. And I'm not talking

  744. about completely.

  745. I mean,

  746. John Mark didn't

  747. withdraw from completely

  748. because he was willing

  749. to go back with them

  750. out in this particular

  751. place.

  752. But,

  753. in this,

  754. in this one season,

  755. he did withdraw.

  756. And,

  757. again,

  758. no condemnation.

  759. Some of this is hard.

  760. Gene and I remember

  761. many lonely times

  762. doing church planning

  763. with little kids.

  764. I want to even speak

  765. specifically to some

  766. of you moms

  767. of little kids

  768. who are just tired

  769. because you're a mom

  770. and you're doing the work

  771. and you're trying to

  772. help do church planning,

  773. you know,

  774. maybe with your husband

  775. and a bunch of littles

  776. and you're just thinking,

  777. yeah,

  778. you know,

  779. I,

  780. I don't know.

  781. I'm a little tired.

  782. Maybe,

  783. maybe I've withdrawn

  784. a little bit.

  785. Maybe I've hid behind

  786. the kids

  787. or hid behind the sickness

  788. or hid behind this

  789. or that.

  790. That happens sometimes,

  791. right?

  792. But I'm asking you

  793. to consider John Mark

  794. here and to consider

  795. this here.

  796. And Paul was,

  797. Paul was pretty emphatic

  798. about this and said,

  799. hey,

  800. Barnabas,

  801. I,

  802. I don't think,

  803. I think it's best

  804. not to take him with us

  805. because he had withdrawn

  806. from us in Pamphylia

  807. and had not gone

  808. with us to the work.

  809. And,

  810. um,

  811. Paul knows how

  812. to build churches,

  813. right?

  814. Paul has apostolic wisdom

  815. to do this

  816. in the sense

  817. that he's concerned

  818. about the danger

  819. of a withdrawing

  820. that can happen

  821. and the effect

  822. that it has

  823. on the work.

  824. And,

  825. uh,

  826. I think it's

  827. an important point.

  828. I think it's important

  829. for us to ask

  830. and do a,

  831. a good just kind of

  832. looking at ourselves

  833. and said,

  834. hey,

  835. if I,

  836. if I withdrawn

  837. a little bit,

  838. if I withdrawn

  839. literally from the work,

  840. if I withdrawn

  841. just in my heart,

  842. if I withdrawn

  843. with my enthusiasm,

  844. if I,

  845. you know,

  846. uh,

  847. maybe had the sniffles

  848. and,

  849. you know,

  850. said I was really sick

  851. and maybe I wasn't

  852. really sick,

  853. I just kind of was,

  854. you know,

  855. checked out a little bit.

  856. If I,

  857. if I like just

  858. withdrawn from the effort,

  859. if I showed up to meetings

  860. but not really showed up

  861. to meetings,

  862. you understand what I'm saying?

  863. Like,

  864. I'm there,

  865. I'm physically there,

  866. but I'm not there,

  867. engaged at the heart

  868. and really going at it

  869. with the work.

  870. Maybe I was more enthusiastic

  871. on the front end

  872. of this thing

  873. and now,

  874. you know,

  875. uh,

  876. almost two years into it,

  877. maybe the enthusiasm

  878. has waned a little bit.

  879. Maybe I'd hope

  880. the things were going

  881. to be a little different.

  882. Maybe I'd hope

  883. that we'd see

  884. more souls come to Christ

  885. and,

  886. you know,

  887. maybe,

  888. maybe I'm a little bit

  889. more withdrawn,

  890. okay?

  891. And he,

  892. he,

  893. he criticizes this

  894. and it's a,

  895. it's a thing for us

  896. to ask the question of,

  897. okay?

  898. First Corinthians 1558

  899. says,

  900. and he says,

  901. therefore,

  902. so the part,

  903. the part before this

  904. is describing the return

  905. of the Lord,

  906. it's describing the time

  907. when death will be

  908. swallowed up in victory

  909. and he says,

  910. basically,

  911. therefore,

  912. so in light of this

  913. return of the Lord

  914. and death being swallowed

  915. up in victory,

  916. he says,

  917. my dear brothers

  918. and sisters,

  919. stand firm,

  920. let nothing move you,

  921. always give yourselves

  922. fully to the work

  923. of the Lord

  924. because you know

  925. that your labor

  926. in the Lord

  927. is not in vain.

  928. So again,

  929. speaking of the work,

  930. he says,

  931. always give yourselves

  932. fully to the work

  933. of the Lord,

  934. okay?

  935. So it's a sense of like,

  936. I'm going to give myself

  937. fully.

  938. I'm going to give myself

  939. always.

  940. That's the kind of commitment

  941. that is necessary

  942. to do the work

  943. of the Lord.

  944. Always and fully

  945. in the work of the Lord.

  946. Now,

  947. you can't do that

  948. on your own.

  949. There's no way

  950. you're going to always

  951. give yourself fully

  952. to the work of the Lord

  953. unless you're always

  954. thinking about

  955. the consistent,

  956. steadfast love

  957. of the Father

  958. in Christ Jesus.

  959. 1 John 4,

  960. 19 says,

  961. we love because

  962. he first loved us,

  963. right?

  964. We love because

  965. God first loved us.

  966. You have to be fueled

  967. by the things

  968. we were saying

  969. this morning

  970. that no one's ever

  971. loved us

  972. the way he's loved us.

  973. No one has pursued us

  974. the way he's pursued us.

  975. When you live

  976. in that awareness,

  977. it puts a fire

  978. in your belly.

  979. It puts a persistence

  980. and a steadfastness

  981. in you to say,

  982. I know that my labor

  983. in the Lord

  984. is not in vain

  985. because the Lamb

  986. who was slain

  987. is worthy.

  988. The Lamb who was slain

  989. is worthy

  990. and to receive

  991. the reward

  992. of his suffering.

  993. And,

  994. you know,

  995. by God's grace,

  996. I am to be that man

  997. who gives myself

  998. to this work.

  999. By God's grace,

1000. I am to be that woman

  1001. who gives myself fully.

  1002. And yeah,

1003. I'm going to be tired.

1004. I'm going to be worn out.

  1005. Most certainly,

  1006. these people

  1007. in the scriptures

  1008. were as well.

  1009. But I'm going to

  1010. fulfill God's command

  1011. to always give myself

1012. fully to the work of the Lord.

  1013. Why?

  1014. He says,

  1015. because you know

  1016. that your labor

  1017. in the Lord

  1018. is not in vain.

  1019. Brothers and sisters,

  1020. do you know this?

1021. Do you know this today?

  1022. Like,

1023. do you know it in your gut?

  1024. Do you know it

  1025. in the sense that

1026. I'm not going to give up?

1027. I know that my labor

  1028. in the Lord

  1029. is not in vain.

  1030. Do you know this?

  1031. When you know it,

  1032. then you persist.

  1033. You persevere.

  1034. You strategize.

  1035. You set apart.

  1036. You get equipped

  1037. for the work.

  1038. Ephesians 4,

  1039. 11 to 12

  1040. says he gave

  1041. the apostles,

  1042. the prophets,

  1043. the evangelists,

  1044. the shepherds,

  1045. and teachers

  1046. to equip the saints

1047. for the work of ministry,

  1048. for building up

1049. of the body of Christ.

  1050. Okay?

  1051. And it's not just

  1052. generic ministry.

  1053. It's specifically

  1054. the building up

1055. of the body of Christ.

  1056. are we utilizing

  1057. and experiencing

  1058. the benefit

  1059. of the different gifts

  1060. that we've been given

  1061. in the church?

  1062. Are we utilizing them

  1063. in the sense

  1064. that we're equipped?

  1065. Or are we maybe

  1066. taking for granted

  1067. certain gifts

  1068. that are among us?

  1069. Are we taking granted

1070. some of what's given to us?

1071. Do we have a sense of

  1072. maybe a little bit

  1073. of arrogant independence

  1074. that says,

  1075. you know what?

  1076. I don't need these other gifts.

  1077. I don't need

  1078. these other people.

  1079. Like,

1080. I got it figured out.

  1081. I don't need

  1082. to be equipped

  1083. in these things.

  1084. God specifically

  1085. gave these gifts

  1086. to the church.

  1087. Apostles,

  1088. prophets,

  1089. pastors,

  1090. teachers,

  1091. and evangelists.

1092. He gave them to us

1093. so that we can be equipped.

1094. Are we leaning into them?

1095. Are we taking advantage of them?

  1096. Are we taking advantage

1097. of those that we know

  1098. in our life

  1099. that we see

  1100. that these people,

  1101. these people

  1102. who are gifts

  1103. to the church,

  1104. are we taking advantage

1105. of what has been given to us?

  1106. Or are we saying,

  1107. no,

  1108. I got this.

  1109. I'm fine.

  1110. I don't need that.

  1111. And then we're trying

  1112. to do the work

  1113. of ministry unequipped.

  1114. We're equipped

  1115. to do that work

  1116. with these gifts.

  1117. Okay?

  1118. And essentially

  1119. what he was saying,

  1120. again,

  1121. in that verse

  1122. we started with

  1123. at the beginning,

  1124. he says,

  1125. send out laborers

  1126. into the harvest field.

  1127. You know,

  1128. Paul told to Timothy

  1129. in 2 Timothy 4, 5,

  1130. he says,

  1131. it's for you,

  1132. always be sober-minded,

  1133. endure suffering,

  1134. and do the work

  1135. of an evangelist.

  1136. Fulfill your ministry.

  1137. Okay?

  1138. Do the work

  1139. of an evangelist.

  1140. Paul also said

  1141. in Philippians 4, 3,

  1142. yes,

  1143. I ask you also,

  1144. true companion,

  1145. help these women

  1146. who have labored

  1147. side by side

  1148. with me

  1149. in the gospel

  1150. together

  1151. with comment

  1152. and the rest

  1153. of my fellow workers

  1154. whose names

  1155. are in the book

  1156. of life.

  1157. Okay?

  1158. The laborers are few.

  1159. We've got to get

  1160. strategically

  1161. into the harvest field

  1162. together.

  1163. He said,

  1164. who've labored

  1165. side by side

  1166. with me

  1167. in the gospel

  1168. together,

  1169. doing the work

  1170. of an evangelist.

  1171. Our missional communities

  1172. can't be communities

  1173. with just a side

  1174. of mission.

  1175. Like,

  1176. that's never going

  1177. to work.

  1178. That's never going

  1179. to be what God

  1180. wanted us to be

  1181. as a people.

  1182. A people

  1183. who are living

  1184. for his glory

  1185. by doing what

  1186. Jesus did,

  1187. seeking and saving

  1188. those who were lost.

  1189. Seeking out lost people

  1190. and saying,

  1191. hey,

  1192. it's not okay

  1193. that we just have

  1194. our life together

  1195. and then sprinkle

  1196. in just a little

  1197. bit of mission.

  1198. Like,

  1199. oh,

  1200. that'd be cool.

  1201. Hey,

  1202. look,

  1203. there's an unbeliever.

  1204. We should,

  1205. you know,

  1206. preach the gospel

  1207. to them.

  1208. Missional communities,

  1209. those missional communities,

  1210. the groups that we,

1211. those of you who don't

  1212. know what I'm talking

  1213. about,

  1214. our church,

  1215. pretty much the only

  1216. thing we have

  1217. as a church

  1218. is we organize

  1219. the people

  1220. in our church

  1221. together in what

  1222. we call missional

  1223. communities.

  1224. And a missional

  1225. community is a small

  1226. family of believers

  1227. on mission

  1228. to specific people

  1229. and places.

  1230. Now,

  1231. nobody drifts

  1232. towards mission.

  1233. Nobody,

  1234. no church drifts

  1235. towards mission.

  1236. And any church

  1237. that's not on mission

  1238. is a church

  1239. that's dying.

  1240. That's a fact.

  1241. That is a fact.

1242. Mission has to be pushed.

1243. Mission has to be reminded.

1244. Mission has to be organized.

  1245. Mission has to be

  1246. not just something

1247. we do out of obligation,

1248. but it has to be

  1249. a passion of ours

  1250. because of our love

  1251. for Jesus

  1252. and our knowledge

  1253. of who Jesus is.

  1254. We have to be

  1255. a missional people

  1256. because God

  1257. is a missional God.

  1258. Right?

1259. And when we know that,

  1260. we don't just

  1261. organize ourselves

  1262. into communities

  1263. of people

  1264. and that are just

  1265. communities

  1266. and then,

  1267. oh yeah,

  1268. we'll do a little

  1269. mission here and there.

  1270. Mission must be

  1271. at the forefront.

  1272. Okay?

  1273. And if we don't

  1274. build that into

1275. the culture of our church,

  1276. the church isn't

1277. going to drift that way

  1278. over the years.

  1279. Please listen to me

  1280. when I say that.

1281. It will not do that.

  1282. Right?

  1283. If there's any

  1284. apostolic wisdom in me,

  1285. I'm asking you

  1286. to listen to this.

  1287. We must have

  1288. a pressed into,

  1289. intentional,

  1290. at the forefront

  1291. of these communities

  1292. that aren't just

  1293. communities,

  1294. but missional communities

  1295. that we are on

  1296. mission together.

1297. And it can't just be

  1298. a group of people

  1299. who are on mission

  1300. to individual people

  1301. in their lives

  1302. with no cohesive

  1303. togetherness.

  1304. That's not a missional

  1305. community.

  1306. That's just Christianity.

  1307. Every Christian needs

  1308. to be on mission

  1309. to people.

  1310. But the church

  1311. is more than that.

  1312. The church gets

  1313. on mission together.

  1314. If you look at

  1315. the New Testament,

  1316. you look at

  1317. the book of Acts.

  1318. Were they just doing

  1319. these little communities

  1320. and then mission

  1321. was a sprinkle

  1322. on the side?

  1323. No.

  1324. You don't see that.

  1325. You won't see that.

1326. This was at the forefront.

  1327. This was the tip

  1328. of the arrow.

  1329. Where the church went

  1330. was where mission went.

  1331. They were constantly

  1332. expanding.

  1333. Paul's like,

  1334. I gotta go

  1335. to where Christ

  1336. hasn't been preached.

  1337. I have to go

  1338. to lands

  1339. where Christ

  1340. hasn't been preached.

  1341. We have to seek

  1342. and save people

  1343. who are lost.

  1344. We're gonna send

  1345. people and equip

  1346. people into

  1347. different cities,

  1348. into different places,

  1349. and they were

  1350. constantly pressing

  1351. into seeking

  1352. lost people

  1353. to hear the gospel,

  1354. to give people

  1355. a hearing.

  1356. And we must also.

  1357. Okay?

  1358. That has to happen.

  1359. And so,

  1360. those of you

  1361. in missional communities,

  1362. whether you're

  1363. leading them

  1364. or you're partners,

  1365. members inside

  1366. those missional communities,

  1367. there has to be

  1368. a planning together

  1369. of how are we

  1370. gonna get on mission

  1371. and who are we

1372. gonna get on mission to.

  1373. That question

  1374. cannot go unanswered

  1375. if we're to be

  1376. a healthy church.

  1377. It just can't.

  1378. And I know you've

1379. heard me say this before

  1380. and you say,

  1381. well, Josh,

  1382. you keep saying this.

  1383. Yes, I am.

  1384. And I will continue.

  1385. It would be

  1386. apostolic malpractice

  1387. not to.

  1388. Do you understand that?

  1389. It would be

  1390. church planting

  1391. malpractice

  1392. not to.

  1393. It would be

  1394. unloving

  1395. and unglorifying

  1396. to God

  1397. to have

  1398. in any way,

  1399. shape,

  1400. or form

  1401. the thought

  1402. of building

  1403. a church

  1404. that isn't

  1405. primarily

  1406. orientated

  1407. towards mission

  1408. for the glory

  1409. of God.

  1410. You cannot

  1411. have a church

  1412. be healthy

  1413. if it is not

  1414. one that is

  1415. orientated

  1416. towards lost people.

  1417. Because if it's not,

  1418. it's inward

  1419. and ingrown

  1420. and selfish.

  1421. And that will

  1422. rot from the core.

  1423. It will

  1424. rot from the core.

  1425. There's no

  1426. healthy church

  1427. that ever thinks

  1428. or acts

  1429. that way.

  1430. And so,

  1431. that takes all

  1432. of us together

  1433. to do that.

1434. We all have to say,

  1435. this is not optional.

  1436. The work that

  1437. needs to be done,

  1438. one of the main

  1439. aspects of the work

1440. that needs to be done

  1441. is good old-fashioned

  1442. evangelism.

  1443. And some of you

  1444. might say,

  1445. well, I'm not very

  1446. comfortable with evangelism.

  1447. Well, I have a word

  1448. for you

  1449. from the Lord.

  1450. Get comfortable.

  1451. Because you're a Christian.

  1452. For Christ's sake,

  1453. get comfortable

  1454. with preaching

  1455. to the lost.

  1456. Like, this is what

  1457. Christians do.

  1458. If you've been,

  1459. if you've lived

  1460. some form of Christianity

  1461. that didn't have

1462. evangelism a part of it,

  1463. you were sold

  1464. a bill of goods.

  1465. You were sold

  1466. an experience

  1467. that is not

  1468. consistent

  1469. with the New Testament.

  1470. You have been sold

  1471. a church experience

  1472. that is not

  1473. apostolic in nature

  1474. in the truest sense

  1475. of what the Bible

  1476. says about it.

  1477. We must be

  1478. a missional people

  1479. and a missional people

  1480. gets to work.

  1481. It takes work.

  1482. It takes time.

  1483. It takes failure

  1484. and then persistence

  1485. to push through

  1486. the failure.

  1487. Like the quote

  1488. attributed to

  1489. Winston Churchill

  1490. that true success

  1491. is going from failure

  1492. to failure

  1493. without loss

  1494. of enthusiasm.

  1495. Okay?

  1496. That's church planting.

  1497. That is church planting.

  1498. Okay?

  1499. I love that quote.

1500. That's part of the reason

  1501. I know I'm probably

  1502. called to church planting

  1503. because I'm a glutton

  1504. for that punishment.

1505. But I also get weary

  1506. in that

1507. and I know you guys

  1508. do too sometimes.

  1509. But that,

  1510. we have to go

  1511. from failure to failure

  1512. without loss of enthusiasm.

  1513. We're going to fail.

  1514. But man,

  1515. if we fail

  1516. because we're trying

  1517. to reach lost people,

  1518. praise God,

  1519. that's the best

  1520. kind of failure.

  1521. And Winston Churchill,

  1522. if it was him,

1523. some people say it wasn't.

  1524. I don't care.

  1525. It sounds like him.

  1526. Okay?

  1527. He said,

  1528. success is not final.

1529. And failure is not fatal.

  1530. It's the courage

  1531. to continue that counts.

  1532. Okay?

  1533. Success is not final.

1534. And failure is not fatal.

1535. We just got to keep going.

1536. We got to keep going.

  1537. And so,

  1538. I get fired up

1539. when I see you guys

  1540. just getting out there

1541. and trying to do evangelism.

  1542. I get fired up

1543. when I see you guys

  1544. doing that together.

  1545. I get fired up

  1546. when it goes bad

  1547. and you guys

  1548. don't lose heart.

  1549. I'm like,

  1550. yes,

  1551. this is apostolic.

  1552. This is how churches

  1553. get planted.

  1554. This is how healthy

  1555. church culture gets built

  1556. with this grit

  1557. that says,

  1558. hey,

  1559. I'm not stopping.

  1560. I didn't come here

  1561. for some little

  1562. bless me club

1563. with a bunch of people

1564. who I could be close to

  1565. and be friends with

  1566. and our kids

  1567. could be friends with

1568. for the rest of our life

1569. where we wouldn't have to be

1570. burdened by some big church

  1571. where it's too overwhelming.

  1572. I didn't have to do

  1573. that much work.

1574. That's not what I signed up for.

  1575. I signed up for a nimble,

  1576. apostolic team of people

1577. that would go into the world

  1578. and seek and save

1579. lost people to get saved.

1580. I signed up for earnest prayer

1581. for God to send workers

  1582. into his harvest field.

1583. I signed up for my schedule

  1584. to be inconvenienced.

1585. I signed up for me

1586. to be losing sleep sometimes

  1587. because it's required

  1588. to stay up late

  1589. to do the work.

  1590. I signed up

  1591. to do things

1592. where I have to sacrifice hobbies

1593. and things that I want to do

1594. because that's what God's calling me into

  1595. to establish the church.

  1596. And that's what God's called

  1597. everyone into

  1598. who's ever established a church.

1599. This isn't some newfangled thing

  1600. for Christ's church.

1601. This is just good old fashioned

  1602. apostolic work

1603. that God has called us to do.

  1604. My question is,

1605. are we up for the work?

1606. Will we put in the work?

  1607. And any church

  1608. that you've experienced

  1609. in the past

  1610. or seen

  1611. that has been established,

1612. that was built on the backs

  1613. of people like,

1614. look around like you and me

  1615. who do the work.

1616. It's those kind of people.

  1617. And there's never,

1618. there's never been any shortcuts.

  1619. Now,

  1620. I know that there's all kinds

  1621. of marketing shortcuts

  1622. that people do.

  1623. I'm not talking about

  1624. that kind of church.

  1625. I'm talking about

  1626. real grassroots

1627. doing the work of evangelism,

1628. doing the work of discipleship,

1629. doing the work of earnest prayer

1630. to see lost people saved

1631. and to see workers be sent out.

  1632. That's the work

  1633. God's called us to.

1634. And you know why it's exciting?

  1635. Because

  1636. you will

  1637. reap a harvest

1638. if you don't give up.

  1639. Not you might,

  1640. not hope I will,

  1641. not,

  1642. oh,

  1643. I hope this isn't for nothing.

  1644. No,

  1645. you will

  1646. reap a harvest

1647. if you don't give up.

  1648. And so you know

1649. that your labor in the Lord

  1650. is not in vain.

  1651. You know what's disheartening?

  1652. Thinking,

  1653. oh,

1654. my labor that I'm doing,

  1655. it's in vain.

  1656. It's not worth it.

  1657. It's not accomplishing

1658. what it was set out to do.

1659. You don't have to worry about that.

  1660. If you are always

  1661. giving yourself

1662. fully to the work of the Lord,

  1663. you know

1664. that your labor in the Lord

  1665. is not in vain.

  1666. That's what it says.

  1667. That's what it says.

1668. And I want to ask you,

  1669. do you know that?

  1670. Do you know that

  1671. and believe that?

1672. If you don't know that

1673. in the depths of your soul,

1674. if you don't believe that,

1675. you're going to pull back.

  1676. You're going to withdraw.

  1677. You're going to,

  1678. you're not going to,

1679. you're not going to persevere

  1680. when the,

  1681. when stuff gets tough.

  1682. You won't.

1683. That's why you got to believe this.

1684. That's why it requires faith

1685. for us to be able to do

  1686. this kind of work.

1687. But the faith that's required

  1688. is just believing

1689. that God is who he says he is.

  1690. But it costs.

  1691. It costs for sure.

1692. Paul describes this kind of cost

  1693. in Philippians chapter two,

  1694. verse 25,

  1695. on to verse 30,

  1696. when he talks about

1697. a fellow worker of his name,

  1698. Epaphroditus.

  1699. He says,

  1700. I thought it necessary

  1701. to send you Epaphroditus,

  1702. my brother

  1703. and fellow worker

  1704. and fellow soldier

  1705. and your messenger

1706. and minister to my need.

1707. Epaphroditus has one of the coolest

  1708. resumes in the Bible.

  1709. Okay.

  1710. I don't know of anybody else

1711. who's got those kind of,

  1712. you know,

  1713. titles behind his name.

  1714. Epaphroditus,

  1715. he's my brother.

  1716. He's my fellow worker.

  1717. He's a fellow soldier.

  1718. He's a,

  1719. your messenger

1720. and minister to my need.

  1721. I mean,

  1722. this dude's a legit dude,

  1723. right?

  1724. This guy's,

  1725. but he's got

1726. a title that we could all have

  1727. and that's fellow worker.

1728. For us to see a healthy church

  1729. established here

  1730. at Christ Church,

1731. we've all got to be fellow workers

1732. and we got to put in

1733. a similar level of work

  1734. where we're,

  1735. there's a shared level

  1736. of responsibility,

  1737. a shared level

  1738. of the weight

  1739. to say,

1740. I'm not going to let that,

  1741. I'm not going to,

  1742. and that's the difference

  1743. between just a group

  1744. of workers

1745. and a group of workers

  1746. that's family.

  1747. See,

  1748. a group of workers

  1749. that is family says,

1750. I'm not going to let

  1751. my brother or sister

  1752. carry too much,

  1753. right?

1754. I'm going to do this

  1755. with them.

  1756. Not to mention,

  1757. if they're my brother

  1758. and sister,

1759. I'm not going to let them

  1760. hog everything either.

  1761. Like,

1762. we're going to share this,

  1763. right?

  1764. We're going to share

  1765. the venues as well.

1766. We're going to do this together.

  1767. That's what true brothers

  1768. and sisters do.

1769. And that's what we need

1770. to be with one another.

  1771. Just say,

  1772. listen,

1773. I'm not going to let this weight

  1774. fall on other people

  1775. because I'm checking out

  1776. lazy or being selfish.

1777. I'm not going to let this weight

  1778. fall on other people

1779. because I have different priorities

  1780. than the rest

  1781. of the other people

  1782. even though I agreed

1783. to have the same priorities

  1784. of seeking first

  1785. the kingdom of God.

  1786. That's not fair

  1787. to everybody else

  1788. and it's certainly

  1789. not glorifying to God.

1790. God is looking for a people

  1791. who are bought in,

  1792. sold out,

  1793. like Epaphroditus.

  1794. And it says,

1795. it goes on to say,

1796. for he has been longing

  1797. for you all

  1798. and has been distressed

  1799. because you heard

  1800. that he was ill.

  1801. Indeed,

  1802. he was ill,

  1803. near to death.

1804. But God had mercy on him

1805. and not only on him

  1806. but also on me,

1807. lest I should have sorrow

  1808. upon sorrow.

  1809. I am more eager

  1810. to send him therefore

  1811. that you may rejoice

  1812. at seeing him again

1813. and that I may be less anxious.

1814. So receive him in the Lord

  1815. with all joy

  1816. and honor such men

  1817. for he nearly died

1818. for the work of Christ

  1819. risking his life

1820. to complete what was lacking

1821. in your service to me.

1822. The cost of the work

  1823. is important.

  1824. It requires risk.

  1825. It says,

  1826. he nearly died

1827. for the work of Christ

  1828. risking his life.

  1829. Let me ask you,

  1830. what are you risking

  1831. for this church life?

  1832. What are you sacrificing

  1833. for this church?

  1834. Epaphroditus was sacrificing

  1835. even his own life,

  1836. willing to risk

  1837. even his own life

  1838. for the church

  1839. in Philippi.

  1840. Okay?

  1841. And that level

  1842. of sacrifice

  1843. and risk

  1844. and cost

  1845. that he offered up

  1846. caused them

  1847. to have a level

  1848. of relationship

  1849. where there was longing

  1850. for one another.

1851. Do you see the language

  1852. that was used there?

  1853. That's real church

  1854. right there.

  1855. That's just not,

  1856. you know,

  1857. superficial hallelujah

  1858. Christianity

  1859. or what Mike Knott

  1860. calls happy smiles

  1861. and half sympathies,

  1862. you know,

  1863. where everybody's just,

  1864. you know,

  1865. singing lies

  1866. to one another

  1867. on a Sunday morning.

  1868. This is real deal

  1869. love for one another,

  1870. longing for one another.

  1871. When everyone,

  1872. when there's equal buy-in,

  1873. when there's equal

  1874. sacrifice,

  1875. it says,

  1876. hey,

1877. the Lamb who was slain

  1878. is worthy.

  1879. And so,

  1880. I'm in.

  1881. I'm bought in.

  1882. And I have fellowship

1883. with my brothers and sisters

  1884. because I know

  1885. they're bought into.

  1886. They're my fellow workers.

  1887. They're my fellow soldiers.

  1888. They've risked their life

1889. to complete what was lacking.

  1890. There's a cost to the work.

  1891. That's why even

  1892. when you look at

  1893. 1 Corinthians 3

  1894. when Paul's kind of

1895. laying out this apostolic picture

  1896. of church planting

  1897. and building the church,

1898. he says in verse 10

1899. that according to the grace

1900. of God given to me

1901. like a skilled master builder,

  1902. I laid a foundation

  1903. and someone else

  1904. is building upon it.

1905. Let each one take care

1906. how he builds upon it.

1907. Let each one take care

1908. how he builds upon it.

  1909. Now,

1910. you might have an opinion

1911. of what it looks like

1912. to take care of how you build,

1913. but Paul has a very specific

  1914. application of what

  1915. that care looks like.

  1916. The care involved

  1917. with building

  1918. has to do with

  1919. the materials

  1920. that are used.

1921. You ever buy a house

1922. or go look at a house

1923. and maybe on the outside

1924. you saw the pictures online

  1925. and you're like,

  1926. wow,

  1927. this house looks amazing.

  1928. Then you get inside

  1929. and you're like,

  1930. man,

  1931. did they use the

  1932. bad materials.

  1933. It looks like

  1934. they're kind of

1935. covering up some stuff here.

  1936. It's like,

  1937. this is cheap,

  1938. man.

  1939. That picture

  1940. has looked amazing.

1941. But then you get in there

  1942. and you're like,

1943. this is a cheaply built house.

  1944. The materials matter,

  1945. don't they?

  1946. Right?

  1947. So when he says,

1948. let each one take care

  1949. how he builds

  1950. in verse 10,

  1951. he then goes

  1952. in verse 11,

  1953. he says,

1954. no one can lay a foundation

  1955. other than that

  1956. which is laid,

  1957. which is Jesus Christ.

  1958. And then he talks

  1959. about the materials

  1960. that are used

  1961. to build upon it.

  1962. In verse 12,

  1963. he says,

  1964. if anyone builds

  1965. on the foundation

  1966. with gold,

  1967. silver,

  1968. precious stones,

  1969. or wood,

  1970. hay,

  1971. and straw,

  1972. okay,

1973. now before I go on,

  1974. you notice the difference

  1975. between those two?

1976. We've talked about this before,

1977. but I want to remind us again.

  1978. What's the difference

  1979. between wood,

  1980. hay,

  1981. and straw

  1982. and gold,

  1983. silver,

  1984. and precious stones?

  1985. The cost.

  1986. The cost,

  1987. right?

  1988. Gold,

  1989. silver,

  1990. and precious stones

  1991. are expensive.

  1992. They're not only expensive

  1993. to have,

  1994. they're expensive to get.

1995. You have to mine them

  1996. from the ground.

  1997. Wood,

  1998. hay,

  1999. and straw

2000. are all above the ground.

  2001. They're easily procured

  2002. and they're cheap.

  2003. Okay?

2004. They're also easily burnt up.

  2005. In verse 13,

  2006. he says,

  2007. each one's work

  2008. will become manifest

  2009. for the day

  2010. will disclose it

2011. because it will be revealed

  2012. by fire

2013. and the fire will test

  2014. what sort of work

  2015. each one has done.

  2016. If the work

  2017. that anyone has built

  2018. on the foundation

  2019. survives,

  2020. he will receive reward.

  2021. If anyone's work

  2022. is burned up,

  2023. he will suffer loss,

  2024. though he himself

  2025. will be saved,

2026. but only as through fire.

  2027. So God has laid

  2028. a foundation

  2029. in this church

  2030. for us

  2031. to be building upon.

2032. I want to ask you

  2033. a question.

2034. What are you building with?

  2035. What materials

  2036. are you building with?

  2037. Are they costly?

  2038. Or are you just

  2039. giving some cheap

  2040. materials to the church?

  2041. Your time,

  2042. your talents,

  2043. your treasure.

  2044. Are you offering

  2045. cheap stuff?

  2046. Is it wood,

  2047. hay, and stubble?

  2048. Or is it gold,

  2049. silver,

  2050. and precious stones?

  2051. To take care

  2052. how you build

  2053. means to take care

  2054. that you are using

  2055. expensive material.

  2056. And you might say,

  2057. man,

  2058. this is too expensive.

  2059. Yeah,

  2060. to build something

  2061. worthy of the king

  2062. is expensive.

  2063. When David built

  2064. the temple

  2065. and when David

  2066. built his throne

  2067. worthy of King David

  2068. and then the temple

  2069. worthy of the king,

  2070. God himself,

  2071. was he using

  2072. some,

  2073. you know,

  2074. cheap material?

  2075. No way.

  2076. And yet sometimes,

  2077. even though Christ

  2078. came

  2079. and died

  2080. for the ungodly

2081. while we were yet sinners,

  2082. while we were enemies,

  2083. reconciled us to him

  2084. and justified us

  2085. in Christ Jesus,

  2086. would we dare

  2087. have the audacity

2088. to offer up to him

  2089. cheap materials

  2090. and not take care

  2091. how we build?

2092. We've got to take care

  2093. how we build.

  2094. We've been given

  2095. a precious gift

2096. and we didn't deserve it

2097. because he did it to us

2098. while we were yet sinners,

2099. he died for the ungodly,

  2100. and he reconciled

  2101. his enemies.

2102. That means none of us

  2103. were qualified,

  2104. earned,

  2105. or had any merit

  2106. to receive this love

  2107. of the Father

  2108. in Christ Jesus.

  2109. But he says,

  2110. let each one

  2111. take care

  2112. how he builds.

  2113. Are you taking care?

  2114. Are we taking care?

  2115. You know,

  2116. in Hosea,

  2117. is it Hosea?

  2118. I think it's Hosea,

  2119. when he rebukes them

  2120. when he says,

2121. you guys pay all attention

  2122. to your house

  2123. but my house

  2124. is in ruins.

  2125. It's easy

  2126. to pay attention

  2127. to ourselves,

  2128. to our leisure,

  2129. to our careers,

  2130. to our own homes,

  2131. and what we do

  2132. at our own homes,

  2133. and then not give

  2134. costly material

  2135. to the building

  2136. of the house

  2137. of the Lord,

  2138. to the work

  2139. that God

2140. has set us apart for.

  2141. And we should be

  2142. giving costly materials

  2143. in proportion

  2144. to what Jesus

  2145. has given us

  2146. in Christ Jesus.

  2147. And it's incalculable

  2148. what he's given us

  2149. in Christ Jesus.

  2150. Last point

  2151. before we conclude.

  2152. 1 Thessalonians 5,

  2153. 12 to 13

2154. in speaking of the work

  2155. and the labor,

  2156. he says,

2157. Paul says to the Thessalonians,

  2158. we ask you,

  2159. brothers,

  2160. to respect those

  2161. who labor among you

  2162. and are over you

  2163. in the Lord

  2164. and admonish you

  2165. and to esteem them

  2166. very highly in love

  2167. because of their work.

  2168. Be at peace

  2169. among yourselves.

  2170. Esteem them

  2171. very highly

  2172. because of your work.

2173. Let me ask you a question.

  2174. Is there any question

  2175. about your apostolic

  2176. work ethic?

  2177. Is there any question

  2178. about your intentionality

  2179. and track record

  2180. to do the work

  2181. to build God's church

  2182. for his glory?

  2183. People,

  2184. you might say,

  2185. man,

  2186. I wish people

  2187. respected me more.

  2188. Well,

  2189. what do people respect?

  2190. It says right here,

  2191. people are respected

  2192. very highly.

  2193. Why?

  2194. Because of their work.

  2195. Because of their work.

  2196. You want that respect,

2197. that comes in the church?

  2198. Well,

2199. it comes for the people

2200. who are doing the work.

2201. When you're doing the work,

  2202. the respect is there

  2203. and you respect those

  2204. who labor among you.

  2205. Are you laboring among

  2206. the people?

  2207. Are you laboring among

  2208. one another to say,

2209. I want to build the bond

2210. that we have in Christ Jesus?

2211. I want to build us

  2212. closer together.

  2213. I want to build a framework

  2214. of people

  2215. that are on mission

  2216. to specific people

  2217. and places

  2218. in the context

  2219. of our missional communities.

  2220. That our missional communities

  2221. aren't just places

  2222. where we come

  2223. and enjoy the scriptures,

  2224. which is awesome,

  2225. and encourage one another,

  2226. which is awesome,

2227. and bear one another's burdens,

  2228. which is awesome,

2229. but that we come together

2230. as a family on mission

  2231. and get out

2232. where the lost people are

  2233. and preach the gospel

  2234. and build relationships

  2235. with unbelievers.

  2236. We expose them

2237. to the family of believers

2238. and we preach the gospel

  2239. to them and pray

  2240. they get saved

  2241. and make them disciples.

  2242. And then we rinse

  2243. and repeat

  2244. over and over

  2245. and over again.

2246. And we keep doing that

  2247. over and over

  2248. and over again.

  2249. That's work.

2250. And there needs to be

2251. a labor among us in that.

  2252. And there's a respect

  2253. that comes from that.

  2254. There's a certain level

  2255. of esteem

  2256. that comes from that.

2257. And especially those of you

2258. who esteem to be elders

  2259. in this church,

2260. you've got to do that work.

  2261. You've got to labor

  2262. amongst people

  2263. and win the respect

  2264. of people

2265. because of your hard work,

  2266. because of your work

  2267. in the doing

  2268. of the things

2269. that a lot of times,

  2270. frankly,

2271. people don't want to do.

  2272. The level of service,

  2273. washing people's feet,

  2274. so to speak,

  2275. and getting in there

2276. and getting your hands dirty.

  2277. In conclusion,

  2278. 1 Thessalonians 1, 2-3 says,

2279. We give thanks to God

2280. always for all of you,

  2281. constantly mentioning you

  2282. in our prayers,

  2283. remembering before

  2284. our God and Father

  2285. your work of faith

  2286. and labor of love

  2287. and steadfastness of hope

2288. in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  2289. What a beautiful trifecta

2290. that is right there, right?

  2291. Your work of faith.

  2292. All this work

  2293. I'm talking about,

  2294. I'm not asking you

  2295. to pull yourself up

2296. out of your own bootstraps,

  2297. get hyped,

2298. get on the hype train

  2299. and just start building

  2300. God's church.

  2301. That's totally lame

  2302. and not sustainable.

  2303. I'm asking us

2304. to get on the gospel train,

  2305. believe that Jesus

2306. is who he says he is,

  2307. believe that Jesus

  2308. did what he said

  2309. he would do,

  2310. and be moved

2311. in the depths of our soul

  2312. by the power

  2313. of the gospel

2314. to do the work of faith,

2315. to do the work of faith

2316. and a labor of love

  2317. where we,

  2318. out of the love

2319. that God has shed abroad

  2320. into our hearts

  2321. by the Holy Spirit,

2322. the love that he poured

  2323. into our hearts,

2324. we end up loving one another

  2325. and loving the lost

  2326. in such a way

  2327. that it induces

  2328. real genuine

  2329. heartfelt labor,

  2330. a labor of love.

  2331. And it's all grounded

  2332. on the steadfastness

  2333. of hope

2334. in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  2335. Again,

  2336. knowing that our labor

  2337. in the Lord

  2338. is not in vain.

  2339. Do you believe that?

  2340. Do you believe it

2341. to the point to persevere?

  2342. Like,

  2343. I'm not discouraged.

2344. I hope you hear me.

  2345. I'm not saying this

  2346. because I'm discouraged.

2347. I'm trying to rally the troops

  2348. in a holistic,

  2349. gospel-founded way

  2350. and just say,

2351. we got work to do.

2352. And I told you this

2353. at the beginning of the year.

  2354. I'm telling you again,

2355. it's more work than you think.

  2356. I don't think we've anticipated

2357. how much work it is

  2358. and I don't think we've bought

2359. into the level we need to.

  2360. I'm calling you guys

2361. and I'm telling you as a church,

2362. we got to dive in.

2363. We got to embrace that work.

2364. But here's the encouraging part.

2365. We will reap a harvest

2366. if we don't give up.

2367. And our labor in the Lord

  2368. is not in vain.

  2369. Amen?

  2370. Amen.

  2371. Let's stand.
