  1. Tonight I'm going to be talking about sonship, man as a son.

  2. ! So basically to start I want to give a quick intro, a little bit of background.

  3. So I actually moved here in January 2012. I was living in Mexico at the time. I had just kind of gotten right with the Lord. And I didn't have much direction. I didn't have much of a plan for my life.

  4. And I was talking to my older brother Tony, who was in Mexico. He's been friends with Josh for a while. And he was like, hey man, Josh is about to start doing some men's training in Kansas City with a bunch of guys.

  5. And he's going to be born into a small, back then a small group of guys, probably five, six guys or something. And he's like, hey, consider moving to Kansas City and jumping in with those guys.

  6. They were just starting a new church plant at their house. And so I moved in with them. And that was January 2012. And then shortly after we did our first man camp.

  7. And I don't know how many we've done since then, 15 years, almost every year, maybe. There might have been a few years we've skipped or whatever.

  8. But anyway, I've been a part of all the man camps. I've attended all of them.

  9. And one of the things about man camp, or one of the things about men's training and talking about what it looks like and what it is to be, what it means to be a biblical man

  10. and live in accordance with what God says in his scriptures is, every time I went to man camp, there's always something new.

  11. Like you can hear it. It doesn't matter how many times you hear it. You're in a different stage of life.

  12. There's always something new. Like it's wild. Like you think, I've heard it all.

  13. No, no, no, no. It's really, really sweet material. Very curated. And so, really excited about this man camp.

  14. So, anyway, that's a little bit of the back story. I've been very blessed. I've been very blessed by man camp.

  15. And I can actually confidently say that it is, attending, being part of men's training has actually changed the course of my life.

  16. Like I've, it really has. It's, I've been very blessed to benefit over and over and over from this material.

  17. So, if you can, if you're here tonight, you should really try and make it to the other eight weeks because it's awesome.

  18. And invite your friends. We've got a bunch of flyers back there. So, grab them, invite your friends.

  19. So, to kind of get into this, I'm going to give somewhat of a brief overview of what we're going to get into.

  20. Kind of an opening statement. This is kind of what I'm going to be focusing on is,

  21. so, we have a great need today for men to understand what it means to become sons, then brothers, then fathers.

  22. Right? This is a great need in our culture, in our society, in our lives.

  23. This is an incredible, incredibly great need.

  24. We, men, today, we as men need to get this right.

  25. We cannot treat this lightly. We shouldn't.

  26. Yeah, we really, really, very, very important.

  27. To start off, I want to kind of, I actually want to, I want to give some statistics.

  28. I'm sure a lot of you know, or have heard a lot of these statistics, whatever, but,

  29. I kind of want to talk about the fatherlessness problem we have before we get into sonship.

  30. Because I think it really, it's kind of a foundational reason for why we're even doing this.

  31. So, we have to understand what it means to be a son first, then brother, then fathers, eventually.

  32. So, I'm just going to start off by just reading some statistics about fatherlessness in our country, in our culture.

  33. So, fatherlessness affects approximately 18 to 24 million children in the U.S.

  34. who live without the relative fathers.

  35. Crisis linked to higher risk of poverty.

  36. So, this, the, the, the, yeah, it, it leads to all kinds of chaos and destruction when we, when men miss it on this topic, okay?

  37. Behavioral disorders, incarceration, substance abuse.

  38. It's just a huge social problem here in our, in our society, culturally.

  39. And, so, a few statistics.

  40. Again, this is roughly 33% of children in our country, 24.7 million, live in homes without their biological father.

  41. Behavior, this is behavioral and mental health.

  42. 85% of children with behavioral disorders and 60, 60% of youth suicides come from fatherless homes, okay?

  43. Incarceration and crime.

  44. Boys and father, father absent homes are twice as likely to serve time in jail by age 30.

  45. With fatherlessness being a stronger predicator of incarceration than poverty.

  46. So, education, 71% of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes.

  47. So, girls face an eight times higher risk of teenage pregnancy and higher risks of depression overall.

  48. Boys often struggle with direction, discipline, and emotional regulation, okay?

  49. So, lack of a father in our, in our lives is, it just greatly impacts our culture, our society, everything.

  50. Again, it's going to, it leaves, it causes men to abandon, leave their, leave their wives, leave their kids.

  51. Non-marital child, non-marital childbearing, incarceration, all this stuff.

  52. Unbelievable, the ripple effects of when, when men get this wrong, okay?

  53. So, we, we want to combat that.

  54. This is, so, to, but to start, we need to understand what it is to be a son, what it means.

  55. So, we're going to get into it.

  56. Isaiah 43, verses 6 and 7 says,

    Isaiah 43:6

  57. Bring my sons, this is God speaking,

  58. Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth,

  59. everyone who is called by my name and whom I have created for my glory,

  60. whom I have formed, even who I have made.

  61. So, whom I have created for my glory, this is key.

  62. Man is the glory of God.

  63. Man was created to glorify God with our lives.

  64. It's the purpose of man, to glory, glorify God.

  65. So, we need to point and give glory with our lives to God.

  66. This is our aim.

  67. This is our purpose.

  68. This is our reason for existence, okay?

  69. So, if we get this off,

  70. our lives are utterly, like, we will have missed the mark, okay?

  71. Very, very important.

  72. Apart from coming into a bright relationship with our Heavenly Father,

  73. our lives will add up to a big pile of nothing.

  74. We will have missed the mark.

  75. We just wouldn't have.

  76. We will not fulfill the purpose for our existence.

  77. Big, big thing here.

  78. So, again, so what is it?

  79. Quickly defining sons, okay?

  80. What does it mean to become a son?

  81. To come into a right relationship with our Heavenly Father

  82. and gain a spirit of sonship, okay?

  83. Come into a right relationship with our Heavenly Father

  84. and gain a spirit of sonship, okay?

  85. This is going to affect our identity.

  86. It's going to affect everything about how we go about our lives, okay?

  87. Brothers.

  88. Brothers.

  89. So, once we establish, once we find our identity as sons of our Heavenly Father,

  90. then we learn to become brothers.

  91. We're brothers.

  92. And we serve.

  93. So, what this means is we learn to love our brothers

  94. in the way that Christ loves us, loved us,

  95. and wash each other's feet, okay?

  96. Serving one another, serving our wives,

  97. serving the people around us.

  98. It says, Christ did not come to be served, but to serve

  99. and give His life a ransom for many.

  100. So, this is what He calls us to as well.

  101. And so, and then the next layer would be fathers, okay?

  102. This leads us to become good fathers.

  103. So, what it means is, this is just a brief definition.

  104. It means to impart our Heavenly Father's love for us

  105. to sons in the same way that we have received it, okay?

  106. There's a responsibility that we have.

  107. It's a weighty one.

  108. So, the problem we're going to get into,

  109. the problem is there's sin in the world, okay?

  110. And sin derails and corrupts our design

  111. and our relationship and our communion with our Creator.

  112. It disrupts it.

  113. And we see this right away in Genesis 3, okay?

  114. Before we go to Genesis 3, I want to kind of reiterate.

  115. In 1 Samuel chapter 30, verse 22, it talks about worthless men.

    1 Samuel 30:22

  116. So, this is a thing that the Bible says,

  117. it's a possibility that you could be a worthless man.

  118. You could be worthless.

  119. This is a thing.

  120. This is, it's really brash and it's very kind of in your face,

  121. but the Bible, God's Word, says that this is a thing.

  122. We can be worthless men if we're not careful.

  123. So, we don't want to be worthless men.

  124. We want to fulfill our calling, okay?

  125. So, sin.

  126. Sin corrupts us.

  127. We're going to look at,

  128. we're going to look at Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3:7–13

  129. verses 7 through 13.

  130. So, again, sin and the fall corrupted our relationship with God.

  131. And, man, we lost our, in the fall,

  132. we lost our identity and our sense of value and purpose.

  133. And we were left with the shame of our inadequacy.

  134. That's what we were left with in the fall.

  135. We're left with shame, okay?

  136. And we don't know what to do with it.

  137. Unless we, unless we look back to His Word, right?

  138. So, I'm just going to, I'm going to read,

  139. I'm going to read this section of Scripture here in Genesis 3,

  140. because I'm going to kind of keep going back to it

  141. and referencing it as the whole time we talk, okay?

  142. So, and this is what it says.

  143. Then the eyes of both were opened,

  144. and they knew that they were naked.

  145. And they sewed fig leaves together

  146. and made themselves loincloths.

  147. And then,

  148. and they heard the sound of the Lord walking in the garden

  149. in the cool of the day.

  150. And the man and his wife hid themselves

  151. from the presence of the Lord God

  152. among the trees of the garden.

  153. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him,

  154. Where are you?

  155. And he said,

  156. I heard the sound of you in the garden,

  157. and I was afraid because I was naked.

  158. So, remember back in the beginning,

  159. they were naked and unashamed before sin,

  160. before the fall.

  161. They were naked and unashamed.

  162. But now we see sin corrupts this relationship, right?

  163. It says,

  164. I was afraid because I was naked,

  165. and I hid myself.

  166. And he said,

  167. and God said,

  168. Who told you that you were naked?

  169. Have you eaten from the tree

  170. which I have commanded you not to eat?

  171. And the man said,

  172. The woman you gave me

  173. to be with me,

  174. she gave me the fruit of the tree,

  175. and I ate.

  176. And the Lord said to the woman,

  177. What is this that you have done?

  178. The woman said,

  179. The serpent deceived me,

  180. and I ate.

  181. Okay?

  182. We're dodging responsibility.

  183. That's another topic we're going to talk about

  184. man is responsible.

  185. I'm not going to get into that.

  186. But we see that right away.

  187. Okay?

  188. And this is kind of,

  189. the thing about Genesis 3,

  190. it's really,

  191. there's a lot of,

  192. this is deep.

  193. There's a lot of insight into human nature,

  194. who we are.

  195. We were born into Adam.

  196. Right?

  197. We were born into sin.

  198. Okay?

  199. So,

  200. basically,

  201. what we're going to look at

  202. is we're going to look at

  203. the difference between

  204. orphan heart spiritual slavery.

  205. So,

  206. an orphan heart,

  207. it's a spiritual slavery.

  208. There's a spiritual slavery

  209. that we're,

  210. by default,

  211. what sin is caused.

  212. We're going to look at that

  213. versus

  214. a heart of sonship.

  215. A servant heart of sonship.

  216. Okay?

  217. So,

  218. we're going to get into

  219. some characteristics

  220. of an orphan heart.

  221. Okay?

  222. So,

  223. Adam and Eve,

  224. and us,

  225. in our nature,

  226. in our flesh,

  227. we were tempted

  228. to doubt God's goodness.

  229. If you think about this.

  230. So,

  231. God laid it out in the garden,

  232. and then the enemy comes

  233. and tempts.

  234. Basically,

  235. it says,

  236. it caused,

  237. another prescription,

  238. John 8,

  239. 44,

  240. it caused the devil,

  241. Satan,

  242. the father of lies,

  243. i.e.,

  244. a counterfeit father.

  245. So,

  246. they believed the father of lies.

  247. They believed this lie.

  248. And one of the things

  249. that's kind of baked into this lie

  250. is that God is,

  251. God is actually withholding

  252. dead from you.

  253. He doesn't,

  254. he's actually withholding something.

  255. And he,

  256. he lies to them.

  257. And he says,

  258. nope,

  259. you can actually be like God.

  260. You don't need to glorify God.

  261. You can,

  262. you can be like God.

  263. You can live for your own glory.

  264. Right?

  265. And so,

  266. baked into this,

  267. like I said,

  268. there's a subtle lie,

  269. an accusation of God's goodness.

  270. So,

  271. getting into it,

  272. the result of believing

  273. the father of lies

  274. is all kinds of confusion

  275. about our identity,

  276. who we are,

  277. and what our purpose is.

  278. And there's all kinds of shame.

  279. We try and cover us,

  280. cover ourselves up.

  281. So,

  282. I want to kind of share

  283. a little bit of a,

  284. um,

  285. personal,

  286. personal kind of experience.

  287. So,

  288. I,

  289. for,

  290. I don't know how many years,

  291. a good chunk of my life,

  292. probably,

  293. maybe 17 to like 22 or so,

  294. about five years,

  295. I lived in a spirit of orphan thinking.

  296. I lived in this,

  297. because I believed this lie.

  298. I actually believed that God wasn't good.

  299. I did.

  300. And the ramifications of this,

  301. the implications of this,

  302. were absolutely terrible.

  303. Like,

  304. um,

  305. I did not believe God was good.

  306. So,

  307. my mom died when I was seven years old,

  308. okay?

  309. And,

  310. I kind of,

  311. at the time,

  312. I didn't really,

  313. you know,

  314. whatever,

  315. just kind of going,

  316. going through the most of whatever.

  317. Well,

  318. it kind of fleshed out,

  319. by the time I came of age,

  320. to start making my own decisions,

  321. I,

  322. I had bitterness in my heart towards God.

  323. I did not believe He was good.

  324. It was like,

  325. you know,

  326. I didn't understand why He took my mom.

  327. But,

  328. here's the thing about,

  329. here's the thing about this.

  330. It's very important to take what the Bible says,

  331. and expect what,

  332. take God's promises,

  333. and expect them to be true.

  334. So,

  335. He,

  336. God never promises understanding,

  337. right?

  338. In,

  339. in,

  340. in,

  341. in relation to hardship,

  342. necessarily.

  343. But,

  344. He does promise peace,

  345. that surpasses understanding.

  346. And then He says,

  347. that peace,

  348. that He promises,

  349. will guard our hearts.

  350. It'll guard our hearts,

  351. and our minds,

  352. okay?

  353. Very,

  354. very crucial,

  355. very,

  356. very important point here.

  357. Because,

  358. our hearts,

  359. and our minds,

  360. need,

  361. to be guarded,

  362. from the Father of Lies.

  363. And,

  364. we need peace with God.

  365. This is what we need.

  366. So,

  367. it was a corrupted.

  368. So,

  369. I didn't understand why He took my mom.

  370. I didn't understand why,

  371. a few other things,

  372. you know,

  373. that cause shame,

  374. and guilt,

  375. and condemnation,

  376. things happen.

  377. Sin happens.

  378. Hurt people,

  379. hurt people,

  380. right?

  381. So,

  382. sin,

  383. is a thing.

  384. And,

  385. people are sinners.

  386. And,

  387. people sin against us.

  388. And,

  389. we don't know why.

  390. We don't understand why.

  391. But,

  392. God promises peace.

  393. Okay?

  394. Very important.

  395. Expectations are everything,

  396. right?

  397. You expect God to give you,

  398. perfect understanding of why He does everything He does,

  399. and allows,

  400. that's our problem.

  401. That's the problem of expectations.

  402. He'd never promised,

  403. but He did promise peace.

  404. Okay?

  405. So,

  406. anyway,

  407. this leads to,

  408. confusion,

  409. confusion,

  410. about who we are,

  411. and our purpose.

  412. So,

  413. we try,

  414. what do we do with this inadequacy?

  415. What do we do with this shame?

  416. By default,

  417. we try and cover up.

  418. Our go-to,

  419. is to cover up,

  420. in pride,

  421. and,

  422. we try to clothe ourselves,

  423. with,

  424. you name it.

  425. I mean,

  426. there's so many,

  427. the list is endless.

  428. So,

  429. we see this,

  430. I'm not going to go back into it,

  431. a whole bunch,

  432. but,

  433. a lot of it,

  434. if you want to study this,

  435. again,

  436. Genesis 3,

  437. but we see,

  438. man and his wife,

  439. hit themselves,

  440. from the presence of,

  441. of God.

  442. Okay?

  443. They hid.

  444. They hid.

  445. You hide,

  446. and then you well up in pride,

  447. and you try and cover your inadequacy,

  448. you try and cover your shame,

  449. by yourself.

  450. And,

  451. the thing is,

  452. that's an impossibility.

  453. You can't.

  454. We cannot cover,

  455. our shame by ourselves,

  456. because we're sinners.

  457. Okay?

  458. We need another.

  459. We need another to cover us.

  460. This is what we need.

  461. We need a bad.

  462. Okay?

  463. So,

  464. we,

  465. well,

  466. I mean,

  467. there's all kinds of examples.

  468. We withdraw from things that expose us.

  469. We pull back from,

  470. we withdraw from things that expose our inadequacies.

  471. We isolate or distance ourselves,

  472. and close ourselves off to other people.

  473. We say,

  474. you know,

  475. if they actually find out who I am,

  476. they're not going to love me.

  477. If they knew who I was,

  478. they knew this about me,

  479. they'll reject me.

  480. So,

  481. I've got to hide.

  482. I've got to pride.

  483. I've got to try and cover up.

  484. This is what we do,

  485. by default.

  486. We escape to sports.

  487. We escape to games,

  488. hunting,

  489. work,

  490. alcohol,

  491. drugs,

  492. whatever this,

  493. one of my problems is basically,

  494. I had this reality.

  495. I had this weight of inadequacy and sin,

  496. and I knew I wasn't,

  497. I was God.

  498. I knew it.

  499. I knew it.

  500. So,

  501. what did I do?

  502. I ran into drugs.

  503. I literally said,

  504. my reality made me very uncomfortable.

  505. I didn't like my reality.

  506. I knew,

  507. I was under the wrath of God.

  508. I was living under the law.

  509. The law is a schoolmaster.

  510. It exposes our sin.

  511. It exposes our inadequacy.

  512. Right?

  513. Well,

  514. what did I do?

  515. I was like,

  516. I don't like this feeling.

  517. I got to just run around,

  518. try and fuck.

  519. Anything.

  520. Take this feeling away.

  521. Whatever.

  522. So,

  523. I became comfortably numb.

  524. I used substance.

  525. I mean,

  526. comfortable,

  527. quote unquote,

  528. comfortably numb,

  529. right?

  530. Substance.

  531. Running from my reality.

  532. You can run down high at the end of the day.

  533. Like,

  534. I was not sober for years.

  535. I mean,

  536. there's,

  537. anyway.

  538. Well,

  539. that's exhausting.

  540. Sin brings,

  541. unbelievable pain.

  542. And it,

  543. every time,

  544. sin over promises

  545. and under delivers

  546. every single time.

  547. There's a,

  548. we're left with a hole in our hearts.

  549. A void.

  550. Okay?

  551. We need

  552. that communion.

  553. The only thing that satisfies,

  554. the only thing that comforts,

  555. truly comforts,

  556. is

  557. a great relationship

  558. with our Heavenly Father.

  559. Okay?

  560. This is what it is.

  561. And I've lived for years of my life

  562. under this.

  563. Okay?

  564. So,

  565. shame.

  566. There's sin.

  567. There's this problem.

  568. Okay?

  569. We look for counterfeit affections.

  570. We look for passions.

  571. We look to pleasures.

  572. We look to possessions.

  573. We look to position,

  574. performance before other men.

  575. We look for relationships.

  576. We look to other people

  577. to fill this gap.

  578. Surprise,

  579. surprise doesn't work.

  580. It doesn't,

  581. and it's,

  582. it's temporary.

  583. It does not fulfill.

  584. Okay?

  585. So,

  586. but we're,

  587. we're still in that,

  588. we're just,

  589. this is baked into all of us.

  590. And so,

  591. during this time,

  592. I love,

  593. I'm going to drink a water real quick.

  594. Um,

  595. I'm going to go to drink a water real quick.

  596. Um,

  597. during this time in my life,

  598. I'm living as an orphan.

  599. Okay?

  600. I kind of idolized Bob Dylan for a long time.

  601. I wanted to be him essentially.

  602. So,

  603. I saw it fit

  604. for tonight

  605. to read a poem by Bob Dylan

  606. because I think he really beautifully describes it.

  607. So,

  608. forgive me

  609. in advance

  610. because I might not make it

  611. without crying a little bit.

  612. but,

  613. that's what we're talking about,

  614. right?

  615. Like,

  616. I don't,

  617. I'm fine being presented as weak

  618. because Christ is my strength.

  619. I don't care.

  620. Right?

  621. He's,

  622. I'm,

  623. I'm secure in who I am in Christ.

  624. I'm,

  625. I'm a son now.

  626. Okay?

  627. But,

  628. the reason I get a little bit emotional

  629. on this poem

  630. is because it,

  631. it,

  632. um,

  633. kind of describes how I was living

  634. and,

  635. and,

  636. anyway,

  637. I'm going to get into it.

  638. So,

  639. here we go.

  640. It's called

  641. Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie.

  642. Some of you probably heard it.

  643. Have you read this, Adam?

  644. No?

  645. Alright,

  646. anyway.

  647. Alright,

  648. the poem's actually really long.

  649. Way longer than

  650. would make sense to read.

  651. So,

  652. I've chopped it down to

  653. two pages.

  654. So,

  655. just stick with me.

  656. Just,

  657. just track with me.

  658. It's not that long.

  659. They're short lines.

  660. Alright?

  661. Alright.

  662. When your head gets twisted

  663. and your mind grows numb.

  664. When you think you're too old,

  665. too young,

  666. too smart,

  667. or too dumb.

  668. When you're lagging behind

  669. and you're losing your pace.

  670. In a slow motion crawl

  671. of life's busy race.

  672. No matter what you're doing,

  673. if you start giving up,

  674. if the wind don't come

  675. to the top of your cup.

  676. The wind's got you sideways

  677. with one hand holding on

  678. and the other starts slipping

  679. and the feeling is gone.

  680. And your train engine fires

  681. and your train engine fire

  682. needs a new spark

  683. to catch it.

  684. And the wind's easy finding,

  685. but you're lazy to fetch it.

  686. And your sidewalk starts curling

  687. and the streets get too long.

  688. And you start walking backwards,

  689. though you know that's wrong.

  690. And lonesome.

  691. Sorry.

  692. Sorry.

  693. Sorry.

  694. Let me find my place.

  695. I gotta hit.

  696. And lonesome comes up

  697. as the day goes down

  698. and tomorrow's morning

  699. seems so far away

  700. and you feel the reins

  701. from your pony are slipping

  702. and your rope is a slide

  703. because your hands are dripping

  704. and your sun deck deserts

  705. and evergreen valleys

  706. turn to broken down slums

  707. and trash can alleys.

  708. You need something

  709. to open your eyes.

  710. You need to make it,

  711. you need something

  712. to make it known

  713. that it's you

  714. and no one else

  715. that owns

  716. that spot that you're standing

  717. in,

  718. that space that you're sitting

  719. in,

  720. that the world

  721. ain't got you beat,

  722. that it ain't got you licked.

  723. It ain't,

  724. it can't get you crazy

  725. no matter how many times

  726. you might get kicked.

  727. You need something special,

  728. alright?

  729. You need something special

  730. to give you hope

  731. but hope's just a word

  732. that maybe you said

  733. or maybe you heard

  734. on some windy corner

  735. around the wide-angle curve

  736. but that's what you need,

  737. man,

  738. you need it bad

  739. and your trouble is

  740. you know it too good

  741. because you're looking

  742. and you start getting the chills

  743. because you can't find it

  744. on a dollar bill

  745. and it ain't on Macy's windowsill

  746. and it ain't no rich kid's road map

  747. and it ain't no fat kid's fraternity house

  748. and you yell to yourself

  749. and you throw down your hat

  750. saying,

  751. Christ,

  752. do I gotta be like that?

  753. Ain't there no one here

  754. that knows where I'm at?

  755. Ain't there no one here

  756. that knows how I feel?

  757. Good God almighty,

  758. that stuff ain't real

  759. but that ain't your game,

  760. that ain't your race.

  761. You can't hear your name,

  762. you can't see your face,

  763. you gotta look some other place.

  764. Where do you look for this hope

  765. that you're seeking?

  766. Where do you look for this lamp

  767. that's burning?

  768. Where do you look for this oil

  769. that's well gushing?

  770. Where do you look for this candle

  771. that's glowing?

  772. Where do you look for this hope

  773. that you know is there

  774. and out there somewhere

  775. and your feet can only walk

  776. two down,

  777. walk down two kinds of roads

  778. and your eyes can only look

  779. through two kinds of windows.

  780. Your nose can only smell

  781. two kinds of hallways.

  782. You can touch and twist

  783. and turn two kinds of doorknobs.

  784. You can either go

  785. to the church of your choice

  786. or you can go

  787. to Brooklyn State Hospital.

  788. You can find God

  789. in the church of your choice,

  790. you can find Woody Guthrie

  791. in the Brooklyn State Hospital.

  792. And though it's only my opinion,

  793. I know it may be right or wrong,

  794. you'll find them both

  795. in the Grand Canyon,

  796. sundown.

  797. So, basically what we see here

  798. is we see a vagabond.

  799. We see a hobo.

  800. He's identifying.

  801. He's got no place.

  802. There's no place on earth

  803. where he's found to be home.

  804. Right?

  805. So, he's looking to Woody Guthrie.

  806. Okay?

  807. He idolized Woody Guthrie.

  808. I idolized him.

  809. I idolized Dylan.

  810. We're looking.

  811. We know it.

  812. We know it's there.

  813. Okay?

  814. So, this is what he did.

  815. So, Dylan did.

  816. He idolized him.

  817. He's actually, I mean,

  818. Woody Guthrie was on his deathbed

  819. when he wrote it.

  820. And he goes,

  821. I don't know if you guys

  822. have seen that new Dylan movie,

  823. he goes and visits him.

  824. But he's looking at Woody Guthrie

  825. for affirmation.

  826. We see Bob Dylan

  827. opens his heart up wide

  828. and he beautifully describes

  829. this void in his heart.

  830. Right?

  831. What he needs,

  832. he needs sonship.

  833. Woody Guthrie doesn't have it.

  834. Okay?

  835. Nobody has it.

  836. Where do you look?

  837. Where do you look for this hope?

  838. So,

  839. um,

  840. in the day,

  841. no one can love us

  842. like God can.

  843. No one.

  844. All other loves

  845. are insufficient.

  846. All other loves

  847. will not do it.

  848. Your wife's love

  849. is not going to satisfy.

  850. It's not enough.

  851. I one time watched this,

  852. uh,

  853. this YouTube video

  854. of, uh,

  855. this live performance

  856. of Whitney Houston

  857. singing,

  858. I will always love you.

  859. And I'm like,

  860. it,

  861. something hit me about it.

  862. I just like,

  863. broke down

  864. weeping

  865. and tears.

  866. Man,

  867. that's powerful.

  868. You know,

  869. I will always love you.

  870. God,

  871. it's incredible.

  872. Well,

  873. Whitney's dead.

  874. Okay?

  875. She,

  876. that's,

  877. that's temporary.

  878. Okay?

  879. That,

  880. that,

  881. that feeling,

  882. whatever feeling you get

  883. from temporary love,

  884. it's fading.

  885. It's grass.

  886. It fades away.

  887. It's mist.

  888. It's not everlasting.

  889. We need an everlasting love.

  890. Okay?

  891. We need the rock of ages

  892. that was cleft for us.

  893. Okay?

  894. We need to hide ourselves

  895. under the wing.

  896. Okay?

  897. Of all sufficient God.

  898. Okay?

  899. Unconditional love.

  900. This is the way God loves us.

  901. Okay?

  902. Moving on.

  903. So,

  904. we fight.

  905. We fight for this.

  906. We look for this everywhere.

  907. I mean,

  908. I'm kind of exhausting

  909. this orphan tendency.

  910. I'm exhausting this.

  911. We've kind of established

  912. a foundation here.

  913. This is fleeting.

  914. You can look anywhere else.

  915. You can try and find

  916. your identity

  917. and your approval

  918. from men.

  919. It's not going to work.

  920. It's going to leave you

  921. still in the same spot.

  922. It's going to leave you

  923. worse off.

  924. It left me in a bad spot,

  925. man.

  926. It left me bad.

  927. Basically,

  928. I got to the point

  929. where I'm like,

  930. all right,

  931. either this thing,

  932. this right relationship

  933. with my creator

  934. is a possibility

  935. or I literally

  936. don't care

  937. to carry on.

  938. I'm ready to pull

  939. the plug in

  940. the whole thing.

  941. I literally was.

  942. So,

  943. anyway,

  944. that's what

  945. orphanhood does.

  946. That's what slavery does.

  947. I was a slave to sin.

  948. I had no power

  949. to stop sin.

  950. I needed another.

  951. I needed someone else

  952. to cover my shame.

  953. Not only cover my shame,

  954. but actually

  955. give me the power

  956. to walk in victory

  957. over my sin.

  958. I can't do this.

  959. I'm not righteous.

  960. I need the righteousness

  961. of Christ.

  962. I'm going to move on.

  963. Yeah.

  964. This is the ripple effects

  965. of sin.

  966. This is what believing

  967. the Father of Lies does.

  968. This is what gets us.

  969. Utter despair.

  970. Overpromised.

  971. Undelivered.

  972. Every time.

  973. Okay.

  974. We look to whatever.

  975. We look to women.

  976. We look to pornography.

  977. We look to whatever it is.

  978. And then we feel bad about it.

  979. And then we try and cover it

  980. and run from it.

  981. We do everything under the sun.

  982. But it's not enough.

  983. It doesn't work.

  984. Okay.

  985. So,

  986. we're going to step into

  987. sonship.

  988. Okay.

  989. What does it mean

  990. to come into this

  991. right relationship

  992. with our Heavenly Father?

  993. What is this?

  994. Okay.

  995. Sin broke our relationship again.

  996. So,

  997. Matthew 3,

  998. 16 and 17.

  999. So,

  1000. we see

  1001. Jesus was baptized.

1002. And when Jesus was baptized,

  1003. immediately

1004. he went up from the water.

  1005. And behold,

  1006. the heavens opened up

  1007. to him.

1008. And he saw the Spirit of God

  1009. descending like a dove

1010. and coming to rest on him.

  1011. And behold,

1012. a voice from heaven said,

1013. this is my beloved son

  1014. with whom

  1015. I am well pleased.

  1016. Okay.

  1017. Side note,

  1018. important detail.

  1019. Jesus hasn't done

  1020. any miracles.

  1021. He's not done,

  1022. there's not any performance

  1023. that earned

  1024. this well-pleased disposition

  1025. from the Heavenly Father.

1026. This is the first account

1027. that we see Jesus show up

1028. on the scene in the Gospels.

  1029. So,

  1030. before he lived,

  1031. I mean,

1032. he lived a sinless life.

  1033. He was perfectly obedient

  1034. in every way.

  1035. He lived without sin.

  1036. But there's something here

  1037. to be said about

  1038. he didn't,

  1039. there's no,

  1040. I think that's intentional.

  1041. Right?

  1042. God the Father

  1043. was well-pleased

  1044. in his Son.

  1045. They had perfect fellowship

1046. from the beginning of time

  1047. to the end,

  1048. Alpha and Omega.

  1049. They had perfect fellowship

  1050. with one another.

  1051. And what Christ did

  1052. on the cross,

  1053. he came,

  1054. lived the life

  1055. we couldn't live

  1056. on our behalf.

  1057. And they opened up

  1058. and he gave us

  1059. the right to become

  1060. sons of God.

  1061. He opened it up.

  1062. Spirit of adoption.

  1063. This is the spirit

  1064. of adoption

  1065. that adopts the orphan.

1066. It sets the captives free.

  1067. Okay?

  1068. This is what Jesus

  1069. has the ability

1070. to do in your lives.

  1071. Okay?

1072. He can set you free

  1073. from your besetting sin.

  1074. He can and will

  1075. give you purpose.

  1076. Okay?

1077. This is the power of God

  1078. for the salvation

1079. of all who believe it.

  1080. This is the Gospel.

  1081. We have sinned.

1082. We've tried to cover up

  1083. our own sin.

1084. We've tried to cover up

  1085. our shame

  1086. with anything and everything

  1087. under the sun.

1088. And it leads to utter despair

  1089. and restlessness.

  1090. No peace.

  1091. Okay?

  1092. No dignity.

1093. We need to be clothed

  1094. by God

  1095. with the dignity

  1096. of sonship.

  1097. Okay?

1098. We need to be clothed

  1099. by God

  1100. with the dignity

  1101. of sonship.

  1102. Right after this

  1103. we see

  1104. the counterfeit father

  1105. come in.

  1106. He goes out

  1107. to the wilderness.

  1108. His sonship

  1109. is tested.

  1110. Okay?

  1111. Matthew 4

  1112. The devil says

1113. if you are the son

  1114. of God

  1115. command these stones

  1116. to become loaves

  1117. of bread.

  1118. He's been fasted

  1119. for 40 days.

  1120. Okay?

  1121. Command these

  1122. stones

  1123. become loaves

  1124. of bread.

  1125. Jesus answered

  1126. it is written.

  1127. Okay?

1128. I'm not going to go

  1129. through that whole scripture.

  1130. The point here

  1131. is

  1132. we need to learn

  1133. to answer

  1134. the father of lies

  1135. with truth.

  1136. Where is truth?

  1137. Truth is absolute.

  1138. I am the way

  1139. the truth

  1140. and the life.

  1141. No one comes

  1142. through the father

  1143. except through me

  1144. says Jesus speaking.

  1145. Okay?

  1146. We answer

  1147. we silence

  1148. the voice

  1149. of the enemy

  1150. the accuser

  1151. that says

  1152. you're not enough.

  1153. You'll never make it.

  1154. You'll never add up

  1155. to anything.

  1156. You're nothing.

  1157. You can't do it.

1158. How do we silence this?

  1159. We silence it

1160. with the word of God.

  1161. We counteract

  1162. the lies

  1163. with truth.

  1164. It is written.

  1165. We need to get

  1166. into our work.

  1167. We need to know

  1168. the word of God.

  1169. There's power

1170. in the word of God.

  1171. Okay?

  1172. He can set us

  1173. free from this.

  1174. He invites us

  1175. into this perfect fellowship.

  1176. John 15.

  1177. It's one of my

  1178. favorite verses.

  1179. It's one of my

  1180. all-time favorite verses.

  1181. John 15.

1182. Jesus talks to the disciples.

  1183. He says,

  1184. Just as the Father

  1185. has loved me,

1186. so I have loved you.

1187. Now remain in my love.

  1188. And another part

  1189. of the scripture

  1190. he says,

  1191. If you've seen me,

  1192. you've seen the Father.

  1193. I and the Father

  1194. are one.

  1195. Okay?

  1196. We need perfect love.

  1197. Okay?

  1198. It says,

  1199. Perfect love

  1200. casts out all fear

  1201. because fear

1202. has to do with punishment

1203. and the one that fears

  1204. has not been perfected

  1205. in love.

  1206. Okay?

  1207. Very, very important.

  1208. We need a revelation

1209. of God's love for us.

  1210. Okay?

  1211. It's His kindness

  1212. that leads us

  1213. to repentance.

  1214. Right?

  1215. It's His kindness

  1216. that leads us

  1217. to repentance.

  1218. Your masculinity

  1219. comes from

  1220. an unchanging,

  1221. unconditional,

  1222. loving Father.

  1223. Unconditionally

  1224. loving Father.

  1225. Okay?

  1226. When God gave me

  1227. a revelation

1228. of His love for me,

  1229. I was undone.

  1230. It was game,

  1231. set, and match.

  1232. I had confusion.

  1233. I had all kinds

  1234. of thoughts.

  1235. Right?

  1236. It was done.

  1237. It was done.

  1238. It was over.

  1239. I was running around.

  1240. I moved to Mexico.

1241. I got caught up in,

  1242. like I said,

  1243. I got caught up

1244. in a bunch of crap.

  1245. Just drugs.

  1246. Trying to look

  1247. here, there,

  1248. and everywhere.

  1249. And basically,

  1250. I literally got to

  1251. the point where

  1252. I probably could have

  1253. overdosed on cocaine.

  1254. Probably.

  1255. I tried a few times.

  1256. Kind of.

  1257. Not intentionally,

1258. but I did not care.

  1259. I didn't have,

  1260. I didn't value my life.

  1261. I didn't know

  1262. why I should

  1263. because I didn't have

  1264. the value of,

  1265. I didn't know my worth.

  1266. I forgot I was created

  1267. in the Mijics God.

  1268. I lost sight.

  1269. Right?

1270. I lost sight of this.

1271. It drove me to the ground

  1272. and hard.

  1273. Okay?

  1274. I moved to Mexico.

  1275. I'm like,

  1276. all right,

  1277. I'm trying to do

1278. all this good stuff for you.

1279. I moved to the ministry.

  1280. I'm like,

1281. I had a bunch of street kids.

  1282. I'm like,

  1283. I had this idea.

  1284. All right, God,

1285. I'm doing all this good stuff.

1286. Where's the warm and fuzzy feelings?

  1287. Where are they at?

  1288. Like, look,

  1289. can't you see everything

  1290. I'm doing for you?

1291. I'm doing all this stuff.

  1292. Look.

  1293. Check it out.

  1294. Look what I did.

  1295. And it's like,

  1296. nope.

  1297. You can't do anything

  1298. on your own accord.

  1299. We can do nothing

  1300. to merit

  1301. and deserve

  1302. God's love.

  1303. Nothing.

  1304. It's actually,

  1305. the Bible says,

  1306. filthy rags.

  1307. Our attempts

  1308. to be righteous

  1309. on our own,

  1310. apart from Christ,

  1311. filthy rags.

  1312. He's disgusting.

  1313. So it drove me.

1314. I got to the point.

  1315. I was sneaking out.

  1316. I was sneaking out.

1317. I was still an addict.

  1318. I was sneaking out.

  1319. I was saying,

  1320. I'm walking the dog.

1321. Oh, I'm going to go

  1322. walk the dog.

  1323. Slam 240.

  1324. It's in 20 minutes.

  1325. 240 up here.

  1326. Slam.

  1327. Come back.

  1328. Pass out.

  1329. Whatever.

  1330. I had a problem.

  1331. I had a heart problem.

1332. You can change your externals,

1333. but until we let God

  1334. change our hearts,

  1335. we're going to get

  1336. the same ourselves.

  1337. There you are.

  1338. Wherever you go,

  1339. there you are.

  1340. Right?

  1341. So,

1342. I got to the point

1343. where I was about to roll.

1344. I was looking at flights.

1345. I was going to go back

  1346. to Madison.

  1347. I was like,

  1348. what am I doing?

  1349. I'm drinking with a dog

  1350. then.

  1351. I got friends

1352. that needs to do this.

  1353. Like back in Madison.

  1354. I'm looking at flights

  1355. and doing dishes

  1356. after dinner,

  1357. having a conversation

  1358. with the pastor's daughter.

  1359. Not going to go

  1360. into all of that.

  1361. Anyway,

  1362. Lord used her

  1363. in that season

  1364. to speak to me

  1365. a prophetic word.

  1366. I believe it was

  1367. a prophetic word

1368. that I needed to hear.

  1369. She basically

  1370. prophesied over me.

  1371. Basically said,

  1372. this is,

  1373. she actually challenged

  1374. my character

  1375. as a man.

  1376. She actually challenged

  1377. my character

  1378. and it was exactly

  1379. what I needed.

1380. It was a time and season.

  1381. She challenged

  1382. my character

  1383. as a man.

  1384. Oh,

  1385. you're going up,

  1386. she goes,

  1387. you're going up a mountain,

  1388. right?

1389. You get to a point

  1390. where it's hard,

  1391. right?

1392. Are you the type of man

  1393. that gives up?

1394. You're just going to give up,

  1395. throw in the towel,

  1396. give up?

  1397. There's a summit

1398. at the top of the mountain.

  1399. There's a summit.

  1400. She's prophesied.

  1401. She says,

1402. for no plans I have

  1403. for you,

  1404. declare us,

  1405. Lord.

1406. Probs me not to harm you.

  1407. Plans to give you

1408. a hope in the future.

  1409. Are you a man

  1410. that gives up?

  1411. All right?

  1412. It says,

  1413. if you seek him,

  1414. you'll find him.

  1415. If you seek him

  1416. with all your heart.

  1417. She prophesied over me,

  1418. prayed over me.

  1419. And I'm like,

  1420. okay,

  1421. is this true,

  1422. God?

1423. Is what she's just said

  1424. true about me?

  1425. Could that be true

  1426. for me too?

1427. So I go up on the roof

  1428. down there.

1429. I got these flat roofs.

1430. I go up on the roof

  1431. and I'm calling out

  1432. to the Lord

  1433. and he just totally

1434. reveals his love to me.

  1435. I'm calling out,

  1436. is this true?

  1437. It's just,

  1438. Michael,

  1439. he just met me

  1440. where I was at.

  1441. I've known you.

  1442. I've loved you

  1443. with an everlasting love.

1444. I love you through this.

  1445. I love you.

1446. She kind of showed me

  1447. pictures.

  1448. I knit you together

  1449. in your mother's womb.

  1450. You thought I wasn't there.

1451. I was there the whole time.

  1452. I had a picture.

  1453. There was a picture

  1454. of my mom

  1455. was getting raised.

  1456. Her casket was going

  1457. on into the ground.

  1458. Funerals.

  1459. It happened to me

  1460. on my seventh birthday.

  1461. I had a picture

  1462. of Christ holding me

  1463. as a seven-year-old boy

  1464. weeping over me.

  1465. He was there.

  1466. He is there.

  1467. He's not absent.

1468. He is not an absent father.

1469. He is very much here.

  1470. He loves us

  1471. with an everlasting love.

  1472. He spoke over me.

  1473. I was there.

1474. I was loving you then.

  1475. I'm loving you now

1476. and I'll never leave you

  1477. or forsake you.

  1478. That's what he said.

  1479. And it was game,

  1480. set, and match.

  1481. It was done.

  1482. I was like,

  1483. okay.

  1484. All right.

  1485. That's it.

  1486. A few months later,

  1487. whatever.

  1488. Fast forward,

  1489. then I moved

  1490. to Kansas City

  1491. and all that.

  1492. But anyway,

  1493. we need to revelation

1494. to God's love for us.

  1495. He loves us.

  1496. Unconditionally.

1497. While we were yet sinners,

  1498. Christ died for us.

  1499. Okay?

  1500. And he invites us

  1501. into sonship.

  1502. He invites us

  1503. into fellowship.

  1504. Perfect fellowship

  1505. with him.

  1506. Okay?

  1507. Sonship.

  1508. We need sonship.

  1509. We need to know

1510. who we are in Christ.

  1511. We need to know.

  1512. He gives us dignity.

  1513. This is my son

1514. in whom I am well pleased.

  1515. Christ in us

1516. is our only hope of glory.

  1517. Okay?

  1518. That's it.

  1519. It's Christ in us.

  1520. Okay.

  1521. I'm going to talk

  1522. a little bit more

  1523. about the fruit

  1524. of a sonship heart,

  1525. spirit of sonship.

  1526. Okay?

  1527. So sons

  1528. are accepted

  1529. in the son.

  1530. Okay?

  1531. Fruit of sonship

  1532. makes secure men.

  1533. It makes us secure

  1534. in who we are.

  1535. Not by anything,

  1536. not because we've

  1537. done anything good.

  1538. This is not performance.

  1539. It's because of

  1540. what Christ has done.

  1541. And only that

  1542. we are secure

  1543. in his love.

  1544. Okay?

  1545. He makes us

  1546. emotionally stable.

  1547. Our wives,

  1548. people around us

  1549. need to be,

  1550. they need us

  1551. to be emotionally stable.

  1552. We need to be

  1553. stable men.

  1554. We don't need

  1555. to be tossed

  1556. to and fro.

  1557. The only way

  1558. that we have stability

  1559. or we'll ever

  1560. get stability

  1561. is

  1562. by coming

  1563. into

  1564. right relationship

  1565. with the Alpha

  1566. and Omega,

  1567. the beginning and end.

  1568. Okay?

  1569. He's unchanging.

  1570. He is constant.

  1571. Nothing else

  1572. in this world

  1573. is constant.

  1574. It's all fluid.

  1575. It's here for a minute.

  1576. It's gone.

  1577. It gives you

  1578. fleeting hope.

  1579. It gives you

  1580. fleeting pleasure.

  1581. Whatever you think

1582. is going to make you

  1583. happy or fulfill you,

  1584. apart from Christ,

  1585. it's a lie.

  1586. It really is.

  1587. It just is.

  1588. And it's unreliable.

  1589. Let's say,

  1590. let's do a thought experiment.

  1591. Let's say you

  1592. perform perfectly

  1593. all the goals

  1594. and all the things

  1595. in your heart

  1596. that you have,

  1597. all of your ambitions,

  1598. everything.

  1599. Let's say you

  1600. succeed perfectly.

1601. You get the trophy wife.

  1602. You get the

  1603. million dollar house.

  1604. You get the

  1605. whatever.

  1606. You get the salary.

  1607. whatever.

  1608. You're going to die.

  1609. Okay?

  1610. Not even your life

  1611. is reliable.

  1612. It says we need

  1613. to learn to

  1614. number our days

  1615. and gain a heart

  1616. of wisdom.

  1617. Not another

  1618. guarantee,

  1619. not a day,

  1620. not one more day

  1621. is guaranteed.

  1622. Nothing is guaranteed.

  1623. What is guaranteed

  1624. is if we remain

  1625. under the wrath

  1626. of God

  1627. with unrepentant hearts,

  1628. we will rightly

  1629. be under the wrath

  1630. of God

  1631. and separated

  1632. from His presence.

  1633. That's a guarantee.

  1634. That's reliable.

1635. That is a reliable truth.

  1636. Another reliable truth

  1637. is that we

  1638. have been given

  1639. the opportunity

  1640. to be adopted

  1641. into His kingdom,

  1642. into His family.

  1643. Okay?

  1644. everlasting,

  1645. unchanging love,

  1646. new identity

  1647. as sons

  1648. secure in

  1649. who we are

  1650. in Christ.

  1651. Amen.
