  1. Today I want to talk to you about being a family of missionary servant disciples.

  2. ! Family of missionary servant disciples.

  3. This is our church.

  4. We say, what do you guys do as a church?

  5. What kind of constitutes the life of your church?

  6. And we organize the life of our church into what we call missional communities.

  7. Missional communities are a small family of believers

  8. on a mission to specific people and places.

  9. Okay?

  10. And those missional communities are trying to do all four of these things.

  11. Be a family that's on mission, that serves one another,

  12. and that really becomes disciples and helps each other become disciples.

  13. So, family of missionary servant disciples.

  14. These four identities are the things we're trying to identify with as a missional community.

  15. And the reason this is important is because our mission flows out of our gospel identity.

  16. Okay?

  17. And if we forget this, we're in danger of finding both positive and negative identity

  18. in what we do, falling into a religious performance trap.

  19. Okay?

  20. Which we don't want to do, obviously.

  21. Christ's work has given us identity that we work from, not for.

  22. You hear me on that?

  23. Christ's work has given us identity that we work from, not for.

  24. We are not saved by good works.

  25. We're saved for good works.

  26. Do you follow me on that?

  27. Okay?

  28. Our doing flows out of our being.

  29. All right?

  30. Ephesians 2, 8 to 10 kind of articulates this.

  31. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing.

  32. It is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

  33. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand

  34. that we should walk in them.

  35. So our salvation is not a result of works, but the result of that is good works once we

  36. know who we are, who Christ has made us.

  37. And this is really important because we can seek to strive to be a bunch of things that

  38. we can do to our own strength and we can do to our own energy.

  39. And eventually we're going to fall flat or we're going to get burnt out.

  40. We're going to be like, forget this.

  41. This doesn't sound like life.

  42. This doesn't sound like peace.

  43. This doesn't sound like the fruit of the Spirit.

  44. And you know why?

  45. Because it's not.

  46. The fruit of the Spirit is fruit of the Spirit, not of the flesh.

  47. Okay?

  48. And so if we are not seeing first what our identity is and living out of that identity,

  49. we're going to end up falling into this religious performance trap.

  50. And I don't know about you.

  51. I've done that before.

  52. Don't ever want to do it again.

  53. And if you've done that before, I'm sure you never want to do it again.

  54. It's a racket.

  55. It's a rat race.

  56. It's a hamster wheel.

  57. It's not what Jesus Christ died and resurrected for.

  58. He didn't do that so that we could just try harder and we could just be better people.

  59. He's not a humanist.

  60. Okay?

  61. Christ lives for the glory of God, believes that we function best when we live for the glory

  62. of God by the identity that is given to us and imparted to us through the gospel.

  63. When Jesus died and was buried and rose again and we put our faith in him, our identity changed.

  64. Who we are changes.

  65. There's implications to his death, burial, and resurrection.

  66. There's implications to the gospel.

  67. And we live out of those identities.

  68. Okay?

  69. We don't have to strive to be those things.

  70. God has already made us those things.

  71. The question is, do you believe that?

  72. What is your motivation?

  73. Is it the gospel?

  74. Is it, or is it man-pleasing?

  75. Is it insecurity?

  76. Am I insecure?

  77. Therefore, I'm trying to fill that void of insecurity with performance.

  78. All right?

  79. Do I care a lot about what people think?

  80. And so I'm doing things so that those people will be pleased.

  81. Which eventually I can maybe do for a little while, but it's not going to last.

  82. Okay?

  83. Romans 12 verse 1 in the CSB says,

    Romans 12:1

  84. Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God,

  85. I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.

  86. This is your true worship.

  87. Okay?

  88. And I want to read that before we jump into these,

  89. because I don't want any of us hearing this message and think,

  90. you rah rah, try harder.

  91. Okay?

  92. I want you to hear this message and say,

  93. God has been merciful to me, therefore.

  94. Right?

  95. God has been merciful to me, therefore.

  96. In view of God's, it says, therefore, in view of God's mercies.

  97. His mercy to us causes us,

  98. out of the overflow of who he has made us in him,

  99. redeemed, washed, cleansed, forgiven, saved.

  100. When those things come upon us and transform us,

  101. in view of that mercy, we offer our bodies as living sacrifices.

  102. If you offer your bodies a living sacrifice to get something,

  103. you have not understood the gospel and you're missing Christianity altogether.

  104. And we don't want to have a church that functions that way.

  105. Okay?

  106. So, these are four things that we're always trying to do

  107. in the context of our missional communities.

  108. These are four things, four cylinders.

  109. You know, someone says, hey, now we're firing on all four cylinders.

  110. Here you go.

  111. Here's the four cylinders.

  112. Okay?

  113. These are the four cylinders we want to be firing on.

  114. And there's going to be different seasons where we emphasize one over the other,

  115. because that's the season we're in.

  116. Kind of think of it when you're riding a bike.

  117. You never push both pedals when you're riding a bike.

  118. You only push the pedal that's up.

  119. And there's going to be seasons of time, and it's like, you know what?

  120. Now's the time to focus more on family.

  121. Now's the time to focus more on discipleship.

  122. Now's the time to really focus on serving one another.

  123. Now's the time to focus more on mission.

  124. Okay?

  125. And recognizing those things and not getting caught in some weird performance trap.

  126. Again, when you're hearing this and saying,

  127. we've got to do all four of these, and we've got to do them all at the same time.

  128. And we're doing this, but we're not doing this.

  129. And we're a failure, and we're not doing church well.

  130. And it's just like, whoa, chill out.

  131. Just like, what's the season we're in?

  132. What are we focused on right now?

  133. We can do a couple of these things at the same time, maybe.

  134. All right?

  135. But there's freedom and rest in the gospel to be able to say,

  136. as a church, let's just cultivate these things.

  137. Let's learn and grow and see how we can cultivate these things better

  138. in the context of our missional communities.

  139. Before I jump in, I want to say one thing.

  140. The difference between addition and multiplication.

  141. Okay?

  142. Most churches would say they want to grow.

  143. Any healthy thing grows, so you should say that.

  144. Okay?

  145. A church should want to grow.

  146. I don't think that's selfishly ambitious, although it could be.

  147. But it's good to grow.

  148. All right?

  149. But there's two ways of growth the Bible talks about.

  150. It talks about addition and multiplication.

  151. All right?

  152. In concept, maybe not in specificity.

  153. And addition happens a lot of times in churches in the sense that a really slick Sunday morning

  154. presentation, the charismatic preacher, the amazing worship team, and the killer kids

  155. ministry, kind of the holy trinity of church planting, right?

  156. You know, preaching, worship, and child care.

  157. You nail all those things.

  158. Those things themselves will add people to the church.

  159. What do I mean by that?

  160. Well, you ask someone, why do you go to that church?

  161. Oh, man.

  162. Killer preaching.

  163. Just love the preaching.

  164. It's awesome.

  165. That guy.

  166. He's great.

  167. All right?

  168. Or you say, you know, why do you go to the church?

  169. Oh, the child care is amazing.

  170. Why do you go to the church?

  171. Oh, I just love times of worship.

  172. It's so awesome.

  173. And those things add people to the church.

  174. But they're limited.

  175. It's just three things.

  176. Those three things, we're not adding.

  177. Well, I really, and then now we also do, I don't know.

  178. I don't know what else you'd add.

  179. But it's just those three things, right?

  180. And they're constantly adding people to the church.

  181. That's not a bad thing in one sense.

  182. As long as Christ is preached, like, and people come and they hear the gospel, that's great.

  183. We rejoice that Christ is preached.

  184. But I don't think it's what God intends for church.

  185. I think he's wanting multiplication.

  186. Okay?

  187. And if you have addition, you have this maybe just kind of growth all the time.

  188. The way we're trying to build is through multiplication.

  189. And what that looks like, it's going to be really slow on the front end.

  190. But over time, it's exponential.

  191. What do I mean by multiplication?

  192. What I mean is the attraction is not the show we put on.

  193. It's not the things we do necessarily on Sunday morning, although that can be part of it.

  194. It's the people.

  195. It's the people.

  196. It's a quality people that function together as family, that function together as servants,

  197. that function together as disciples, that function together on mission.

  198. And it's in the everyday stuff of life.

  199. It's all the time.

  200. And when that group of people is solid and they are representing Christ, living like Christ,

  201. when that group of people becomes a people on mission that is filled with the Holy Spirit

  202. and they're functioning the way that God has called us to function,

  203. then the church multiplies because any given one of those people is going to interact with other people

  204. and be on mission to them and reach them and love them, see them get saved.

  205. And then you have exponential multiplication.

  206. Do you understand what I'm saying?

  207. As more and more people come to the church, you have more and more touch points for impact

  208. and gospel impact especially.

  209. And so that's what we're going for.

  210. We're not just looking for, you know, let's get some really good paid professionals.

  211. We can get in here to do all the work of ministry.

  212. The work of those guys is to equip the saints for the work of ministry.

  213. God wanted the church to be saints who are doing the ministry,

  214. not a few paid professionals that everybody else consumes from and is a spectator of.

  215. Church is meant to be all of us participating, using our gifts,

  216. recognizing no one person is the whole enchilada.

  217. We all have a certain part that we play.

  218. And as we all do that together, the church builds itself up in love and grows and grows.

  219. That's the multiplication we're seeking.

  220. It's slow on the front end because we don't have that many people, right?

  221. But more and more as we just interact with people and we're faithful and we're not in a rush,

  222. we're not in a hurry, we're just faithfully conducting our lives, glorifying Christ,

  223. building relationships with people, preaching the gospel, growing in discipleship,

  224. challenging one another, confronting one another, loving one another, praying for one another,

  225. being there for one another, comforting for one another, all these things.

  226. People start, we start interacting with people and they're exposed to the family of believers.

  227. They're experiencing Christ in a myriad of ways from a myriad of people.

  228. That's multiplication.

  229. You follow me on that?

  230. Some of you do, maybe some of you don't.

  231. Okay, good.

  232. We can talk more about it.

  233. So let's jump into it, all right?

  234. First one, family.

  235. We're family.

  236. In Christ, we are children of God, which makes us family.

  237. Okay, John 1 verse 12.

    John 1:12

  238. Great verse.

  239. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to be called children of God.

  240. A lot of times, especially as Americans, we like to talk about our rights.

  241. My favorite right as a human being in Christ is the right to be called a child of God.

  242. That's a good right.

  243. That's a right I will stand up for and boast in, right?

  244. I've been given the right to be called a child of God.

  245. And together, we have been given the right to be called children of God.

  246. And what does that do?

  247. That identity makes us family.

  248. That identity means we function together as brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers.

  249. Verse Timothy 5, 1 to 2 says,

  250. Do not rebuke an older man, but encourage him as he would a father.

  251. Younger men as brothers.

  252. Older women as mothers.

  253. Younger women as sisters in all purity.

  254. Seeing the language here?

  255. Again, this speaks of our identity as a church.

  256. We're family.

  257. This is the same that's true when it speaks of overseers or elders or pastors.

  258. Verse Timothy 3, 4 to 5 says,

  259. He, speaking of an overseer, must manage his own household well,

  260. with all dignity, keeping his children submissive.

  261. For if someone does not know how to manage his own household,

  262. how will he care for God's church?

  263. Again, basically saying, if you can't take care of your own family,

  264. how will you take care of what is also called the family, the family of God?

  265. The training ground is your own family because this larger entity is a family.

  266. And the skills transfer.

  267. You being able to manage your own household, your own family,

  268. carries over to the household of God, which is also a family.

  269. 1 Corinthians 4, 15.

  270. Paul said to the Corinthians, he said,

  271. Though you have countless guides in Christ,

  272. another version says 10,000 instructors in Christ,

  273. you do not have many fathers.

  274. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

  275. See this familial language.

  276. 1 Thessalonians 2, 11 to 12.

  277. For you know how like a father with his children,

  278. we exhorted each of you and encouraged you and charged you.

  279. Okay?

  280. Like a father with his children.

  281. 1 Thessalonians 2, 7 to 8 says,

  282. We were gentle among you like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.

  283. Okay?

  284. Does this mean Paul was trans?

  285. No.

  286. It means that Paul was able to...

  287. You didn't see that question coming, did you?

  288. Okay?

  289. Well, what's the deal here though?

  290. Paul says, he just said in the same book,

  291. that like a father with his children.

  292. Just making sure you guys are awake.

  293. And then he says like a nursing mother.

  294. Okay?

  295. This again flies in the face of macho Christianity,

  296. where men think that they can't have any kind of tenderness to them.

  297. All right?

  298. They must be tender.

  299. Paul unabashedly says like a nursing mother taking care of her children.

  300. And he says,

  301. I was so affectionately desirous of you that we were ready to share with you

  302. not only the gospel of God, but also our own selves,

  303. because you had become very dear to us.

  304. This is the language of family.

  305. This is the language of fathering, mothering,

  306. becoming dear to one another, affectionately desirous of one another.

  307. You ever been a part of church where you'd say,

  308. I'm affectionately desirous of the other person?

  309. I hope you have.

  310. If you haven't, we can be.

  311. Okay?

  312. And again, it's not about,

  313. well, I just have to try really hard to make sure we're a family.

  314. No.

  315. God has given us the right to be called children of God.

  316. We just need to act out who God already says we are.

  317. We need to believe, and our belief will inform our behavior.

  318. Okay?

  319. Our belief will inform our expression of church.

  320. Do you believe?

  321. Do you believe that we are children of God in a family together?

  322. Lastly, Philippians 2.22.

  323. Paul said,

  324. You know Timothy's proven worth how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel.

  325. Okay?

  326. So how do we live out our identity as family?

  327. Okay?

  328. Two main ways, before we get into more specifics,

  329. is just, number one, time together.

  330. Any healthy family spends good time together.

  331. Quality time together.

  332. All right?

  333. And a lot of people love to say,

  334. Well, I want the church to be a family.

  335. Or the church is a family.

  336. But, or,

  337. Are you willing?

  338. Is your desire consistent with your level of time you're willing to invest?

  339. Someone once said,

  340. Time equals relationship.

  341. Okay?

  342. You really can't have a relationship much deeper than the time you spend.

  343. Time is what builds relationship.

  344. Time is what builds a sense of family together with people who aren't your blood.

  345. But it can be stronger because you have that bond of the Spirit,

  346. or what the Bible calls the fellowship of the Spirit.

  347. And so it's important for us to be able to say,

  348. Hey, I am not only just willing,

  349. I am prioritizing and setting aside time to cultivate family with the people around me.

  350. Okay?

  351. And that doesn't mean being really awkward and weird and contrived.

  352. Because again, that doesn't build family.

  353. That just builds divisive weirdness.

  354. All right?

  355. We don't want that.

  356. You don't want that.

  357. It's just being normal with each other.

  358. It's doing the things you'd like to do with people and enjoying one another,

  359. enjoying life together.

  360. Okay?

  361. So that's one aspect of family.

  362. It's just cultivating time.

  363. Just making time for one another.

  364. The other side, though, which I say is almost as important,

  365. and the longer I'm at this, I'm starting to think maybe it's even more important.

  366. Jury's still out on that.

  367. But is growing as a family together through mission.

  368. You know, you hear the term even band of brothers.

  369. What caused that band to become brothers?

  370. Mission.

  371. War.

  372. You know?

  373. And when you get in the trenches together,

  374. when you fight for other people together,

  375. when you're preaching the gospel together,

  376. when you're on mission to specific people and places,

  377. when you're ministering to people and in the trenches with people and crying with people

  378. and burdened with people and losing sleep over people together,

  379. you know what I'm saying?

  380. Where, I mean, have you ever been so burdened by someone or a situation or their sin

  381. that you can't even eat,

  382. and there's other people who can't eat because they're so burdened by it?

  383. I've experienced that before.

  384. When you go through the trenches like that,

  385. and then you come out on your side,

  386. and you see God's faithfulness,

  387. and you see the victory,

  388. and you see God redeem broken things,

  389. and people repent of their sin,

  390. what does that do with those other people?

  391. You might have nothing in common with them,

  392. but you know what you have in common with them?

  393. You've been in the trenches together.

  394. You've been at war together.

  395. You've grieved together.

  396. You've cried together.

  397. You've pleaded together.

  398. You've prayed and fasted together.

  399. You've been on mission together,

  400. and what happens is it forms deep familial bonds

  401. that in some ways time together can't really touch.

  402. This is why, you know,

  403. the people who come back from war have a bond

  404. that they didn't have when they started,

  405. even though when they went out there together,

  406. they had really nothing in common.

  407. What drove them together?

  408. The mission, okay?

  409. And so think of those two things.

  410. I think those are primary in cultivating family together,

  411. but just trying to be brothers and sisters to one another.

  412. What does it mean to be a brother?

  413. What does it mean to be a sister?

  414. If we're older,

  415. thinking about what it looks like

  416. to be fathering or mothering people.

  417. You might say,

  418. well, I don't want to be a father or mother.

  419. I don't know how to be a father or mother.

  420. No one fathered and mothered me.

  421. Well, you can find out.

  422. Ask someone you do know who is.

  423. Get into the scriptures and learn how,

  424. because if you're older,

  425. invariably someone is looking to you in that way,

  426. and you might not even be realizing it.

  427. They're looking at you and they're thinking,

  428. oh, you're a father figure.

  429. You're a mother figure.

  430. And you're thinking,

  431. I don't want to be a father figure or mother figure.

  432. Why not?

  433. A family screwed us up.

  434. It's going to be a family that puts us back together.

  435. It's part of the reason why we have the family of God.

  436. The church is that entity

  437. that can come and redeem those broken places

  438. where our own natural families have screwed up.

  439. We can still experience the father with skin on it.

  440. The father fleshed out in a group of people

  441. where you understand who God is

  442. and what he does through people,

  443. the way they love you,

  444. the way they listen to you,

  445. the way they're there for you,

  446. the way they're consistent with you

  447. and faithful with you.

  448. You get to be able to see the faithfulness of God.

  449. Okay?

  450. This means meeting regularly with people

  451. in your missional community.

  452. It means eating meals together

  453. with your entire missional community

  454. or just certain people in your missional community.

  455. All right?

  456. Meal sharing is all throughout the scriptures.

  457. Don't negate that as not a big deal.

  458. You may say, well, that's just life.

  459. No, that's actually intentional.

  460. Jesus would see someone when he saw Nicodemus.

  461. What did he say?

  462. Hey, I want to go over to your house.

  463. We're going to eat.

  464. We're going to eat together.

  465. That's a form of ministry.

  466. Get to know each other

  467. and get familiar with one another's stories

  468. and their testimonies.

  469. If you know that a person knows what hurts you,

  470. there's a deeper bond there, right?

  471. If you know that they know you

  472. and they know what's been hard for you,

  473. they know what you've been through.

  474. Party and celebrate together.

  475. Their birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers,

  476. wedding receptions, holidays.

  477. Do we do this stuff together?

  478. That's what families do.

  479. Families do that together.

  480. Okay?

  481. Families should be, if they're healthy,

  482. they're good communicators.

  483. You think, well,

  484. my family isn't very good communicators

  485. and there's pain because of that, right?

  486. What is the key to communication?

  487. Or, I'm sorry,

  488. what is the key to community?

  489. Just gave away the punchline, sorry.

  490. What is the key to community?

  491. Communication, right?

  492. Same root word, right?

  493. Community, communication.

  494. It's communing.

  495. People say,

  496. well, I want community,

  497. but I don't want to communicate.

  498. Tell me how that works.

  499. Tell me how that works.

  500. It doesn't.

  501. It doesn't.

  502. I want community,

  503. but I never want to return people's phone calls,

  504. texts, boxes,

  505. whatever it may be,

  506. or I just want to do it on my own time.

  507. How's that working for you?

  508. It doesn't.

  509. Okay?

  510. You can't have community

  511. or what's even deeper than community,

  512. family,

  513. if we don't,

  514. if we aren't good communicators.

  515. Okay?

  516. This looks like,

  517. family looks like being voluntarily open

  518. with one another.

  519. Family doesn't wait to be asked.

  520. Family just opens up.

  521. Okay?

  522. Makes that really open.

  523. Whenever someone asks me,

  524. I answer their questions.

  525. What about being voluntarily open?

  526. Where you don't wait

  527. till they ask your questions.

  528. You know people like that.

  529. They're the ones you feel you know the best

  530. because they're an open book.

  531. And being an open book,

  532. having the windows open,

  533. is one thing,

  534. but is the door locked

  535. and bolted

  536. and chained shut?

  537. Do you let people in

  538. after you're open?

  539. Are you vulnerable?

  540. This is what family is.

  541. Family lets people in.

  542. They say,

  543. well, my family doesn't let me in.

  544. Right,

  545. but that's not healthy family.

  546. Healthy family lets you in.

  547. Okay?

  548. Family helps each other.

  549. They share stuff with each other.

  550. Intentionally blessing one another.

  551. They share hobbies

  552. or interests together.

  553. And you don't just share

  554. your own interests,

  555. you share the other people's interests.

  556. Okay?

  557. Getting into other people's worlds.

  558. We have fun and relaxed together.

  559. Okay?

  560. Maybe even get,

  561. you know,

  562. a missional community

  563. going away together

  564. on a trip together.

  565. Just growing together,

  566. having fun together,

  567. and then looking for the seasonal rhythms

  568. of when that makes the most sense.

  569. Family can be cultivated

  570. all year round

  571. very easily.

  572. Okay?

  573. Secondly,

  574. we're servants.

  575. In Christ,

  576. we belong to God,

  577. which makes us servants.

  578. Okay?

  579. 1 Corinthians 6,

  580. 19 to 20

  581. says,

  582. you're not your own.

  583. You were bought with a price.

  584. So glorify God in your body.

  585. Okay?

  586. Because we're not our own,

  587. we glorify God with ourselves.

  588. Like,

  589. we're no longer

  590. at the disposal of ourselves.

  591. We can't just do what we want,

  592. when we want,

  593. how we want,

  594. the way we want.

  595. We've been bought.

  596. Jesus bought us

  597. with the blood of Christ,

  598. and now we're his servants.

  599. Okay?

  600. That's the identity we have.

  601. But it flows out of his purchasing of us

  602. by his blood.

  603. When we take the Lord's table,

  604. we remember

  605. not just that he died for us

  606. to be forgiven,

  607. we remember that he died

  608. for us to be bought,

  609. that we were purchased,

  610. that our life is no longer our own.

  611. And so we glorify God with our body,

  612. not out of obligation,

  613. but out of response

  614. to the death of Jesus on the cross

  615. when his blood was shed,

  616. so that ours wouldn't have to be.

  617. He died in our places,

  618. as Sean shared this morning,

  619. right?

  620. The substitutionary sacrifice

  621. of the Savior.

  622. Galatians 5.24 said,

  623. those who belong to Christ Jesus

  624. have crucified the flesh

  625. with its passions and desires.

  626. So when you know

  627. that it's our identity,

  628. that we belong to him,

  629. that he's purchased us,

  630. the implications of that

  631. are that we crucify the flesh

  632. with its passions and desires.

  633. That's the fruit of someone

  634. who knows they belong.

  635. That's the fruit of someone

  636. who knows I'm a servant of Christ.

  637. Because I belong to him,

  638. I've put to death the flesh

  639. with its passions and desires.

  640. Mark 10.43-45 said,

  641. whoever be great among you

  642. must be your servant.

  643. Whoever be first among you

  644. must be slave of all.

  645. For even the Son of Man

  646. came not to be served,

  647. but to serve,

  648. and to give his life

  649. as a ransom for many.

  650. What is your heart

  651. when it comes to service?

  652. Galatians 5.13 says,

  653. through love,

  654. serve one another.

  655. 1 Peter 4.10-11 says,

  656. as each has received a gift,

  657. use it to serve one another

  658. as good stewards

  659. of God's very grace.

  660. Whoever speaks

  661. is the one who speaks

  662. oracles of God.

  663. Whoever serves

  664. is one who serves

  665. by the strength

  666. that God supplies.

  667. In order that in everything

  668. God may be glorified

  669. through Jesus Christ.

  670. Okay?

  671. You each have gifts.

  672. We all have gifts.

  673. Are we using them

  674. to serve one another?

  675. Yeah, knowing that

  676. my gifts don't belong to me.

  677. I don't belong to me.

  678. I've been purchased

  679. by the blood of Jesus.

  680. Therefore,

  681. everything that's given to me

  682. is for the body.

  683. It's for others.

  684. I've been given a gift.

  685. It's used to serve one another.

  686. I've been given things.

  687. It's used to bless one another.

  688. That's the heart of a servant.

  689. And I think there's two ways,

  690. I think,

  691. that this service fleshes out.

  692. One,

  693. just the service

  694. of the family of God.

  695. We serve one another.

  696. We look for ways

  697. that we can help one another,

  698. do things for one another,

  699. but also missional service.

  700. Where we can,

  701. there's sometimes

  702. when you're trying

  703. to reach out to someone,

  704. I remember

  705. even one of my neighbors

  706. many years ago

  707. when I moved into the house

  708. we lived in before this one,

  709. I was trying to reach out

  710. to a neighbor

  711. and there was no

  712. getting through to them.

  713. And I remember just,

  714. they were out

  715. sealing their front deck.

  716. Kind of an innocuous little thing,

  717. not a big deal, right?

  718. I just said,

  719. hey, we'll help you.

  720. They're like,

  721. oh, you don't have to help me.

  722. No, no, no, we'll help you.

  723. Went back in the house,

  724. put on some paint clothes,

  725. came out there.

  726. We just sat there,

  727. talked to them.

  728. I mean, it wasn't hard work at all.

  729. But you would have thought

  730. we gave my firstborn kid

  731. to them or something.

  732. They were like super overjoyed

  733. that we would help them.

  734. And you know why?

  735. Because they probably

  736. don't have any friends

  737. who do that.

  738. And you might think,

  739. well, that's normal for us.

  740. We do that for each other

  741. all the time.

  742. It's not for them.

  743. They don't have friends

  744. that do that.

  745. They were so taken aback

  746. that we would help them

  747. seal their deck.

  748. It was a very tiny deck.

  749. It wasn't that big of a deal.

  750. You know, so easy, easy win.

  751. But in their world,

  752. that was big.

  753. Okay?

  754. Serving the lost

  755. is a huge way

  756. to break down walls.

  757. Doing different things.

  758. It's not hard.

  759. And it's fun.

  760. It's fun when you do it

  761. because you belong to Christ.

  762. It's not out of

  763. religious obligation.

  764. It's not out of striving.

  765. It's that,

  766. hey, I've been bought

  767. with a price.

  768. Seal a deck?

  769. Yeah, I can do that.

  770. I can do that.

  771. Jesus purchased me.

  772. This is no big deal.

  773. And if this is an inroad

  774. for these people

  775. to be open,

  776. to be talking to them

  777. about the gospel,

  778. let's do it.

  779. That conversation

  780. on that deck

  781. led to me

  782. going on a trip

  783. down to Haiti

  784. with them

  785. and their parents

  786. where I preached

  787. the gospel to them,

  788. their parents,

  789. to all the workers

  790. down in Haiti

  791. that I met,

  792. and a bunch of other people

  793. that I met

  794. throughout that whole trip.

  795. It was like a paid

  796. missions trip

  797. through them

  798. that they didn't know

  799. that I was on.

  800. And it all started

  801. with me just going

  802. over there

  803. and doing their deck.

  804. So,

  805. look at that.

  806. That worked out

  807. pretty awesome.

  808. What are some ways

  809. we can serve one another?

  810. Help each other

  811. when in need.

  812. Okay?

  813. And here's a key one.

  814. And not letting people

  815. do things alone.

  816. You know the thing

  817. that you have to do

  818. that you don't want to do

  819. but you have to do it

  820. and you hate to do it alone?

  821. The best thing to do

  822. is to help the person

  823. with that thing

  824. so they don't have

  825. to do it alone.

  826. I remember one time

  827. I was working on my house

  828. when I first moved

  829. to Kansas City in 2008.

  830. Bought a house

  831. in the Northeast

  832. and I was

  833. flew down here by myself

  834. and was working on it.

  835. And another guy

  836. I had known here,

  837. a spiritual father of mine,

  838. showed up

  839. on a date night

  840. with his wife

  841. in their nice clothes,

  842. saw me there alone

  843. and had compassion for me

  844. because they had known

  845. what it's like

  846. to be working on a house

  847. late at night

  848. all alone.

  849. And they started

  850. going to work.

  851. I'm like,

  852. no, no, no.

  853. Do not do this.

  854. And they're like,

  855. no, no, no.

  856. We are doing this.

  857. We're not letting you

  858. do this alone.

  859. And I'm like,

  860. no, you guys are all

  861. in your nice clothes.

  862. And they're like,

  863. we have been in many nights

  864. like this

  865. where we've done stuff alone.

  866. We're not letting you do this.

  867. And it just meant so much.

  868. I mean,

  869. in one sense,

  870. I didn't want them to do it

  871. because I'm like,

  872. you guys just want to date.

  873. You're in your nice clothes.

  874. But it really meant a lot to me

  875. because when someone says,

  876. I won't let you do this alone,

  877. there's something really bonding

  878. in that moment.

  879. So that's how we can serve

  880. when I look for opportunities.

  881. When someone's doing something

  882. by their self

  883. and that you can tell

  884. they're really burdened by it,

  885. just like,

  886. hey,

  887. I'm not going to let you

  888. do this alone.

  889. Let me come help you.

  890. Let me come over there.

  891. I'm coming over right now.

  892. And they say,

  893. no, no, no, no.

  894. Come over.

  895. No, no, no.

  896. I'm coming over right now.

  897. Okay.

  898. And then you just go help them out.

  899. So that could look like home repair.

  900. It can look like working

  901. on each other's houses,

  902. babysitting each other's kids,

  903. serving.

  904. You know,

  905. some people just never get a date

  906. because they don't know

  907. when to watch their kids.

  908. That can be huge.

  909. Making or paying for meals

  910. for each other,

  911. praying for one another,

  912. helping each other move.

  913. Okay.

  914. We've been able to bless

  915. a lot of people through moves,

  916. making one of the missions

  917. of my life is to make

  918. moving suck less for people.

  919. So I'm just trying to,

  920. create like a lot more people

  921. to help move.

  922. So let's just go short and quick.

  923. And it's not as a horrible experience.

  924. Helping each other budget.

  925. All right.

  926. Listening to each other,

  927. showing hospitality without grumbling

  928. by opening your homes

  929. to one another

  930. for gatherings or meals or parties.

  931. Barring your stuff to each other,

  932. borrowing vehicles,

  933. tools, clothes,

  934. and then just looking

  935. for those seasonal

  936. kind of rhythms of service.

  937. Maybe there's certain seasons

  938. where it makes more sense

  939. than others,

  940. but service is pretty much,

  941. I think,

  942. a year round thing

  943. that we can be doing

  944. here and there.

  945. Okay.

  946. Next thing.

  947. Number three,

  948. we're disciples.

  949. Okay.

  950. We're disciples.

  951. In Christ,

  952. we abide in his word

  953. and bear much fruit,

  954. which makes us disciples.

  955. John 8 31 says,

  956. so Jesus said to the Jews

  957. who had believed them,

  958. if you abide in my word,

  959. you are truly my disciples.

  960. And then John 15,

  961. eight says,

  962. by this,

  963. my father is glorified

  964. that you bear much fruit

  965. and so proved

  966. to be my disciples.

  967. Okay.

  968. So because of what God

  969. has done for us,

  970. we abide in his word.

  971. And in that abiding,

  972. what ends up happening

  973. is we bear much fruit,

  974. which proves

  975. that we're disciples.

  976. Okay.

  977. You don't strive

  978. to be a disciple.

  979. Discipleship

  980. and the fruit

  981. of discipleship

  982. comes out of abiding

  983. in who Jesus is

  984. and what he's done

  985. for us.

  986. Okay.

  987. It's a fruit

  988. that comes out of us.

  989. It should be coming out.

  990. It should be coming out

  991. of us in some ways,

  992. some ways effortlessly,

  993. not always,

  994. but there's just,

  995. it's just,

  996. it's growing inside of us.

  997. There's a seed inside of us

  998. that grows.

  999. The word of God

  1000. grows inside of us,

  1001. our abiding in him.

  1002. And it's Christ

  1003. who lives in us.

  1004. It's no longer I who live,

1005. but Christ who lives in us.

1006. When Christ lives through us,

1007. does Christ have a hard time

  1008. living the Christian life?

  1009. No.

1010. Does Christ have a hard time

1011. bearing the fruit of discipleship?

  1012. No.

  1013. Has he ever?

  1014. No, he doesn't.

1015. And when you are in Christ,

  1016. it's no longer I who live,

1017. but Christ who lives in you.

1018. And when Christ lives in you,

  1019. the fruit of Christ,

1020. the fruit of the Spirit,

  1021. the fruit of discipleship

  1022. comes out of you.

  1023. Okay.

  1024. And it proves

  1025. that you're a disciple.

1026. If you abide in my word,

1027. you are truly my disciples.

1028. If you bear much fruit,

  1029. you so prove

  1030. to be a disciple.

  1031. Fruit is the proof

  1032. of discipleship.

  1033. Okay.

1034. This is why we look for fruit.

1035. This is why we confront fruit.

1036. This is why we have conversations

  1037. about fruit.

1038. And this is why we don't judge

  1039. people's hearts

  1040. because we don't know

  1041. each other's hearts.

1042. But we do know each other's fruit

1043. and we can speak to the fruit.

  1044. Okay.

  1045. Luke 14, 26 to 27 says,

1046. If anyone comes to me,

1047. it's not hate his own father

  1048. and mother

  1049. and wife and children

  1050. and brothers and sisters.

1051. Yes, even his own life.

1052. He cannot be my disciple.

1053. Whoever does not bear his own cross

  1054. and come after me

  1055. cannot be my disciple.

  1056. And verse 33 says,

  1057. Any one of you

  1058. who does not renounce

  1059. all that he has

  1060. cannot be my disciple.

  1061. So discipleship

1062. has it with a great cost.

1063. And for us to be disciples together

1064. means we're going to have

  1065. to challenge one another.

1066. We have to hold each other accountable

1067. to walk in divine order

1068. to make sure we're not exalting

  1069. good things like family

  1070. above Christ.

1071. We're not exalting good things

1072. that we're supposed to do

1073. without not doing the right things

  1074. in the wrong order.

  1075. All right.

1076. But we're doing the right

1077. and they're not just doing

  1078. the top things

1079. and neglecting the lesser things.

1080. We're doing all the things

  1081. in the right order.

  1082. Okay.

  1083. That's discipleship.

1084. That's the kingdom of God.

  1085. We're seeking the kingdom.

  1086. We're teaching one another.

  1087. Okay.

  1088. Acts 11 26

  1089. says that in Antioch

  1090. the disciples

  1091. were first called Christians.

  1092. Some people teach

  1093. that disciple

  1094. is different from Christian.

  1095. The Bible doesn't.

  1096. Disciple and Christian

  1097. are synonymous.

  1098. When it says disciple

  1099. it means Christian.

  1100. When it says Christian

  1101. it means disciple.

1102. So when we make disciples

  1103. we make Christians.

  1104. Okay.

  1105. When we encourage people

  1106. to be disciples

  1107. we encourage people

  1108. to be Christians.

  1109. In 2 Timothy 2 verse 2

    2 Timothy 2:2

1110. says what you have heard

  1111. from me

  1112. in the presence

  1113. of many witnesses

  1114. entrust to faithful men

  1115. who will be able

  1116. to teach others also.

  1117. Okay.

  1118. And is this not

  1119. the essence of discipleship?

  1120. You hear things

  1121. you grow in things

  1122. you learn things

  1123. and then you entrust

  1124. them to others.

  1125. You teach them

  1126. to other people.

1127. This is what we do

  1128. as parents right?

  1129. We've learned things

1130. and we hope to bring

  1131. our kids up

  1132. in those same things.

  1133. It's not just

  1134. in these set times

  1135. of discipleship

  1136. it's in their coming

  1137. they're going

  1138. when they're rising

1139. when they're going to bed.

  1140. We are speaking truth

  1141. to them

  1142. and it should be

  1143. the same way

  1144. in the church.

  1145. It's not just

  1146. relegated to Sunday mornings

  1147. and Wednesday nights

  1148. it's in the everyday

  1149. step of life

  1150. where we're learning

  1151. and teaching

  1152. and imparting things

  1153. to other people

  1154. that we have received

  1155. from others.

  1156. Okay.

  1157. What is the

  1158. two kind of ways

  1159. to look at discipleship?

  1160. One is in seasons.

  1161. There are seasons

  1162. we're always doing

  1163. discipleship in one sense

  1164. but then there's

  1165. a seasonal aspect

  1166. of it.

  1167. I think in

  1168. especially in Kansas City

  1169. the deep winter time

  1170. and the deep center

  1171. summer time

  1172. is the best time

  1173. to hunker down

  1174. for discipleship

  1175. because when it's

  1176. really cold

  1177. people don't really

  1178. want to go out

  1179. and hang out

1180. and do all kinds of stuff

  1181. and in the middle

  1182. of the summer

  1183. when it's super hot

  1184. people aren't getting out

  1185. those are good times

1186. to kind of hunker down

  1187. and say alright

  1188. let's do some discipleship

1189. let's get in the word together

  1190. let's study something together

  1191. let's talk about

  1192. some discipleship needs

  1193. in our missional community

  1194. let's use this season

  1195. for that particular time.

  1196. Okay.

  1197. But then there's also

1198. the life on life discipleship

  1199. there's going to be

  1200. strategic times

  1201. much like we're doing

  1202. what is a man

  1203. on Monday nights

  1204. that's a specific thing

  1205. nine weeks talking about

  1206. what is a man

  1207. that's great

  1208. it's good stuff right

  1209. it's helpful

  1210. isn't it

  1211. I know it's helpful for me

1212. but in a Sunday morning sermon

  1213. helpful

  1214. okay

  1215. hopefully what I'm preaching

  1216. is helpful

1217. I know I listen to the other sermons

  1218. those are helpful

  1219. okay

  1220. but what about

  1221. is it just that

1222. is that all we do

  1223. no

  1224. when Jesus

  1225. ended his life

1226. did he have 12 disciples

  1227. when he was

  1228. crucified

  1229. and then

  1230. left this earth

1231. did he have 12 disciples

1232. when it was all said and done

  1233. no

  1234. he had 120

  1235. okay

  1236. well

  1237. where did the rest

  1238. come from

  1239. if disciples

  1240. are only made

  1241. in the context

  1242. of small groups

  1243. well

  1244. he spoke to them

  1245. in larger groups

1246. so it's in all things

  1247. it's the large

  1248. it's the small

  1249. it's in the public

1250. it's from house to house

  1251. okay

  1252. that's why we're not

  1253. one or the other

  1254. it's both

  1255. all right

  1256. the bible says

  1257. in public

1258. and from house to house

1259. do we believe in public

  1260. yes

  1261. I'm preaching right now

  1262. in public

1263. do we believe in house

  1264. absolutely

1265. we open up our homes

1266. you guys open up your homes

  1267. this is intentional

  1268. and this is where

  1269. discipleship happens

1270. in the life on life

  1271. in the context

  1272. of life on life

  1273. you're with each other

  1274. and you're talking

  1275. with each other

  1276. and these things happen

1277. and you can be led

  1278. by the spirit

  1279. it was really awesome

  1280. last night

1281. we had a family over

  1282. before they came over

  1283. my wife

  1284. I believe prophetically

  1285. brought up something

1286. to me that she thought

1287. I should talk to them about

1288. and when she brought it up to me

1289. I had already been thinking

  1290. about those things

  1291. so I was like

  1292. yes I like this

1293. tell that to me again

1294. I want to make sure

  1295. I got it right

1296. so she told it to me again

  1297. then we sit down

  1298. and I'm just praying

1299. and looking for a way

1300. to bring this into the conversation

1301. not in a weird awkward way

  1302. because it's kind of

  1303. a confrontation right

  1304. but I really care

  1305. for these people

  1306. and the guy

  1307. starts sharing

  1308. he's like

1309. hey I have this dream

  1310. the other night

1311. and you were in it

  1312. I was like

  1313. oh you tell

1314. and he had this dream

  1315. it was insane

  1316. the dream was exactly

1317. what we were going to

  1318. talk to them about

1319. and it painted it all

  1320. perfect

1321. and I was just kind of like

1322. wow this is the biggest

  1323. softball I've ever received

  1324. it was

  1325. but it was

  1326. Gene and I

  1327. were so encouraged

  1328. it's just like

  1329. this is how

  1330. discipleship happens

  1331. it happens supernaturally

  1332. too

  1333. like you can trust

  1334. for prophetic words

  1335. you can see God

  1336. give prophetic dreams

1337. and I think it probably

  1338. made him so much

  1339. more receptive

1340. to even what I had to say

1341. because he had this dream

  1342. like God actually

1343. put me in a dream

  1344. to talk to him

  1345. ahead of time

1346. so that when I talk

1347. to him in real life

  1348. it would go better

  1349. thank you Lord

  1350. that was great

  1351. but so encouraging

1352. I mean it just made

1353. Gene and I both say

  1354. we need to pray

1355. for more of this stuff

  1356. this is awesome

  1357. did you tell them

  1358. that Gene and I

  1359. said something

  1360. yes we did

  1361. we told them afterwards

  1362. she's like

  1363. can I tell them

  1364. I'm like yeah

  1365. tell them

  1366. but it's so encouraging

  1367. and but sometimes

  1368. we forget about

  1369. stuff like that

  1370. we think oh

  1371. we're just striving

  1372. in the flesh

  1373. like oh here's

  1374. some people here

  1375. they're at my house

  1376. should probably

  1377. encourage them

  1378. or challenge them

  1379. or teach them

  1380. instead of thinking

  1381. hey the God

  1382. of the universe

  1383. is present

  1384. he's with me

  1385. he saved me

  1386. I don't have to strive

  1387. I don't have to

  1388. make something

  1389. happen here

  1390. that's not my job

  1391. I have my job

  1392. just to be faithful

  1393. and so it's like

  1394. alright here we are

  1395. Lord

  1396. let's do this

  1397. what do you have

  1398. and then look what

  1399. he does

  1400. and we need to

  1401. expect more of that

  1402. that's discipleship

  1403. yes we'll have

  1404. formal stuff

  1405. we'll do man camp

1406. you know what is a man

  1407. on Monday nights

  1408. we'll do teachings

  1409. like this

  1410. and we'll do

  1411. marriage stuff

  1412. and parenting stuff

  1413. and other kinds

  1414. of training

  1415. those are all good

  1416. things

  1417. what about the

  1418. life on life

  1419. we speak boldly

  1420. to one another

  1421. but in love

  1422. in each other's

  1423. living rooms

  1424. and kitchen tables

  1425. that's important

  1426. okay

  1427. so what are some

  1428. other ways

  1429. that we do

  1430. identity as disciples

  1431. studying and being

  1432. prepared

  1433. to teach others

  1434. the gospel

  1435. or practicing

  1436. preaching the gospel

  1437. to each other

  1438. sometimes even

  1439. taking the Lord's

  1440. table together

  1441. or being fluent

  1442. in the gospel

  1443. okay

  1444. where we can just

  1445. speak the gospel

  1446. to one another

1447. so that we get good

  1448. and so we know

  1449. how to speak it

  1450. to the lost people

  1451. this looks like

  1452. confessing your sins

  1453. to one another

  1454. okay

  1455. and just saying

  1456. and not exalting

  1457. the sin

  1458. but exalting

  1459. the Savior

  1460. there's a way

  1461. to confess

  1462. sins

  1463. that makes

  1464. your sin

  1465. exalted

  1466. and there's

  1467. a way

  1468. to confess

  1469. sins

  1470. that exalts

  1471. the Savior

  1472. of your sins

  1473. know the difference

  1474. we don't want

  1475. to have a church

  1476. where everybody

  1477. leaves the

  1478. accountability time

  1479. and feels

  1480. morbidly

  1481. discouraged

  1482. just like

  1483. oh

  1484. that

  1485. that was rough

  1486. everybody

  1487. shared their sin

  1488. and

  1489. now

  1490. we're going to

  1491. do it again

  1492. next week

  1493. you know

  1494. like

  1495. there's nothing

  1496. I don't want

  1497. to do this

  1498. next week

  1499. this is horrible

  1500. you know

  1501. instead of

  1502. hey

  1503. this is what

  1504. Christ is

  1505. saving me from

  1506. yes

  1507. this is

  1508. this is a struggle

  1509. but I want you

  1510. to know

  1511. how I'm accessing

  1512. Christ through faith

  1513. or you say

  1514. hey

  1515. I want to confess

  1516. to you some sin

  1517. and I'm having

  1518. a hard time

  1519. believing that

  1520. Christ is saving me

  1521. I'm having a hard time

  1522. accessing the

  1523. saving power of Jesus

  1524. would you help me

  1525. would you speak

  1526. the gospel to you

  1527. would you expose

  1528. my blind spots here

  1529. I'm missing something

  1530. right

  1531. and then someone

  1532. helps you

  1533. and say

  1534. okay

  1535. now I can testify

  1536. God's saving me

  1537. because I see it

  1538. the Bible talks about

  1539. you've been saved

  1540. you're being saved

1541. and you will be saved

  1542. it's three tenses

  1543. and so often

  1544. in the church

  1545. we talk about

  1546. hey man

  1547. hey brother

  1548. I've been saved

  1549. I've been saved

  1550. or we talk about

  1551. the Lord returning

1552. and we will be saved

1553. and then what is it

1554. we just grit our teeth

1555. and try to stay free

  1556. from sin

  1557. and our own strength

  1558. all through this life

  1559. no

  1560. the same power

  1561. that saved us

1562. from the penalty of sin

1563. is available to save us

1564. from the power of sin

1565. and so we can be being saved

  1566. that's sanctification

  1567. right

  1568. well that happens

1569. in the context of body life

  1570. that's discipleship

  1571. that's our identity

  1572. as disciples

  1573. we teach each other

  1574. to rejoice

  1575. and magnify

1576. the saving power of Jesus

  1577. even in the midst

  1578. of our sin

  1579. even in our sin

  1580. and I say

  1581. even in the midst

  1582. of our sin

  1583. where else are we

  1584. going to do it

  1585. right

  1586. I mean

1587. that's where we need it

  1588. okay

  1589. this is studying

  1590. and obeying the Bible

  1591. together

  1592. notice I didn't just say

  1593. studying the Bible

  1594. you know

  1595. a lot of people

1596. want to have a Bible study

1597. how about a Bible obeying

  1598. right

  1599. like

1600. you can study the Bible

1601. but are we doing it

  1602. right

1603. it's easy to study it

  1604. in one sense

  1605. like wow

  1606. that's really good

  1607. I studied the Bible

  1608. okay now do it

1609. can we just study it some more

  1610. I mean

  1611. that's a lot more fun

  1612. no

1613. we have to obey it as well

  1614. right

  1615. we speak the truth

1616. and love to one another

  1617. we determine

  1618. discipleship needs

  1619. in the missional community

1620. and then teach on those needs

  1621. and don't think

1622. that only the lead partner

1623. is the one who can do that

1624. you might be seeing something

  1625. that they're not seeing

1626. had someone come up to me

  1627. the other day

  1628. and just said

  1629. hey

  1630. this is just something

  1631. I've noticed

1632. I think would be good

  1633. to teach on

  1634. I was like

1635. I did not think of that

  1636. but I think you're right

  1637. like that's really helpful

1638. thank you for bringing that up

  1639. so

  1640. those kind of things

  1641. are helpful

  1642. sometimes you're seeing

1643. a need that someone else

  1644. isn't seeing

  1645. and maybe you're even

1646. the one who's going to teach it

  1647. you know

  1648. like hey

1649. could I teach on this

1650. do you think I could

  1651. take some time

  1652. and just share this

  1653. maybe it's briefly

  1654. maybe it's a little bit

  1655. more longer form teaching

  1656. but that's helpful

  1657. for us to become

  1658. disciples together

  1659. growing and understanding

  1660. what gifts you have

1661. and then how you can use

  1662. the gifts you have

  1663. to serve one another

  1664. and disciple one another

  1665. build one another's up

  1666. could look like

  1667. praying and prophesying

  1668. over each other

  1669. right

1670. just praying over each other

  1671. asking the Lord

1672. Lord would you speak to us

  1673. for this person

  1674. this person

  1675. that's being discouraged

  1676. Lord just

  1677. it'd be awesome

1678. if you gave us a word

  1679. for them

  1680. and you're just waiting

  1681. on the Lord

  1682. maybe he does

  1683. maybe he doesn't

  1684. but you're making room

  1685. for him

  1686. to speak to you

  1687. you're listening

  1688. you're waiting

  1689. okay

  1690. maybe it's a

  1691. specific person

  1692. maybe it's a whole family

  1693. maybe it's just a couple

1694. it could be any of those three

  1695. or teach on being

1696. filled with the Holy Spirit

  1697. and praying for people

1698. to be filled with the Spirit

  1699. okay

  1700. valuing the filling

  1701. of the Holy Spirit

1702. and the power of the Holy Spirit

  1703. realizing again

  1704. we're not doing church

  1705. in our own strength

  1706. we want to be

  1707. a church

  1708. that is charismatic

  1709. in the sense

  1710. that we believe

1711. in the power of the Spirit

  1712. not we believe

1713. in all this weird excess

  1714. we believe

  1715. that God's Spirit

  1716. empowers us

  1717. to do the thing

1718. God has called us to do

1719. that can only be done

  1720. by God's Spirit

1721. and so we're not going

  1722. to substitute

  1723. the Spirit

  1724. with the flesh

  1725. and say

  1726. this is church

  1727. that's not church

1728. and it does not exalt

  1729. the third person

  1730. of the Godhead

1731. which is the Holy Spirit

  1732. okay

  1733. lastly

  1734. how we can become

  1735. disciples together

  1736. is we can pray

  1737. even for freedom

  1738. with each other

  1739. sometimes

  1740. the Bible says

  1741. in Ephesians 4

  1742. that when you let

  1743. the sun go down

  1744. and you're angry

  1745. you give the devil

  1746. a foothold

  1747. okay

  1748. if we believe lies

  1749. about God

  1750. or about the Bible

  1751. and you know

  1752. it says the devil

1753. is a father of lies

1754. you can get a strong

  1755. hold on us

1756. or a foothold on us

1757. and we need to pray

  1758. sometimes for freedom

  1759. there needs to be

  1760. confession

  1761. repentance

  1762. and bringing things

  1763. into the light

  1764. darkness is the domain

  1765. of darkness

  1766. and sometimes people

  1767. walk in secret sin

1768. and we get those things

  1769. in the light

  1770. and then we see

  1771. people be set free

  1772. there are some people

  1773. who are stuck

  1774. in certain things

  1775. you know

  1776. the Bible says

  1777. resist the devil

  1778. I mean

  1779. it says

  1780. submit

  1781. James 4 verse 7

    James 4:7

  1782. people love to quote

  1783. James 4 verse 7

    James 4:7

  1784. and just say

  1785. submit to God

1786. and the devil will flee

1787. and they skip the middle part

  1788. it says

  1789. submit to God

  1790. resist the devil

  1791. and he will flee

1792. and a lot of people

  1793. skip the resisting part

1794. you have to resist the devil

  1795. and you know

  1796. what's best done

1797. with the brothers and sisters

  1798. where they can just

1799. resist the devil with you

  1800. and of course

  1801. though

  1802. at the backdrop

  1803. of submission to God

  1804. we're not just

  1805. willy-nilly

  1806. resisting the devil

  1807. when there's not

  1808. submission of God

  1809. we're taking the whole

  1810. verse in context

  1811. we're saying

1812. you must submit to God

1813. and when you submit to God

  1814. we resist the devil

1815. and then what does he

  1816. got to do

  1817. he has to flee

  1818. he has to flee

  1819. lastly

  1820. we're missionaries

  1821. okay

  1822. in Christ

1823. we are sent by God

  1824. which makes us

  1825. missionaries

  1826. or people on mission

  1827. John 20 21

  1828. says

  1829. Jesus said to them

  1830. peace be with you

  1831. as the Father

  1832. has sent me

  1833. even so

  1834. I'm sending you

  1835. I'm sending you

  1836. Matthew 28 19

  1837. the Great Commission

  1838. right

  1839. go therefore

  1840. and make disciples

  1841. of all nations

  1842. baptizing them

  1843. in the Father

  1844. and the Son

  1845. and the Holy Spirit

  1846. go

  1847. I'm sending you

  1848. this involves

  1849. getting out of our

  1850. comfort zone

  1851. have you ever met

  1852. any person

  1853. who drifted into mission

  1854. just kind of

  1855. accidentally found

  1856. themselves there

  1857. you know

  1858. D.A. Carson

  1859. says nobody

  1860. drifts into holiness

  1861. I would add

  1862. nobody drifts

  1863. into mission

  1864. no church drifts

  1865. into mission

  1866. it's like wow

  1867. we have this church

  1868. nobody was even

  1869. thinking about mission

  1870. we weren't aiming

  1871. at mission

1872. and then we just did

1873. we just got on mission

  1874. and all these people

  1875. got saved

  1876. said by nobody ever

1877. that just does not happen

  1878. okay

  1879. mission is

  1880. the uncomfortable

  1881. thing to do

  1882. mission is the thing

  1883. you have to believe

1884. that God is sending you

1885. and then you have to

  1886. go

  1887. okay

  1888. you have to

  1889. leave your spot

  1890. you're in

1891. and go to another spot

  1892. you have to go

  1893. nobody drifts into that

  1894. that doesn't just happen

  1895. that's an intentional action

  1896. and it flows out

  1897. of our identity

  1898. when you know

  1899. that's just not something

  1900. I do

  1901. it's something I am

1902. that I have been sent

  1903. by God

  1904. God didn't want me

  1905. to be stationary

  1906. God didn't want me

  1907. to just be comfortable

  1908. God didn't want me

1909. to just be in my

  1910. us four no more

  1911. bless me club

  1912. where I just listen

  1913. to good sermons

  1914. hear good music

1915. and have my kids watch

  1916. no

1917. God has died on the cross

  1918. and then says

1919. if you want to be my disciple

1920. you pick up yours too

1921. now go seek and save

  1922. those who are lost

  1923. just like I did

  1924. follow my example

  1925. follow me

  1926. follow me to where

  1927. the lost are

  1928. don't ask them

  1929. to put the uncomfortability

  1930. on them

1931. and to come to you

  1932. you put the uncomfortability

  1933. on you

1934. and you go to them

1935. that's what true mission is

  1936. right

  1937. Acts 20 24

  1938. Paul

  1939. the quintessential

1940. I love this verse so much

1941. I do not account my life

  1942. of any value

1943. nor is precious to myself

1944. if only I may finish

  1945. my course

  1946. in the ministry

  1947. that I received

  1948. from the Lord Jesus

  1949. to testify

  1950. of the gospel

1951. of the grace of God

  1952. you know why

1953. you don't drift into it

  1954. because the only way

1955. you can finish the course

1956. of testifying to the gospel

  1957. is if you don't

  1958. account your life

  1959. of any value

  1960. you know precious

  1961. to yourself

  1962. and so that takes

  1963. some high level

  1964. intentionality

  1965. okay

  1966. this is why

  1967. St. Corinthians 5

  1968. talks about us being

  1969. verse 20

  1970. talks about us being

  1971. ambassadors for Christ

  1972. God making his appeal

  1973. through us

  1974. if you know you're

  1975. an ambassador

  1976. you know that's an

  1977. identity of us

  1978. as a church

  1979. we make appeals

  1980. we appeal to people

  1981. I implore you

  1982. on behalf of Christ

  1983. be reconciled to God

  1984. right

  1985. that's what we do

  1986. if we're ambassadors

  1987. of Christ

  1988. it's what Philippians 1

    Philippians 1:5

  1989. verse 5

  1990. calls partnership

  1991. in the gospel

  1992. partnership in the gospel

1993. okay so how do we do that

1994. what does that look like

  1995. it looks like

  1996. figuring out the

  1997. who what and where

1998. people are going to be

  1999. on mission to

2000. like we have to answer

  2001. those questions

2002. who is the who what

  2003. and where

  2004. now it's ideal

  2005. if the whole group

  2006. can get on mission

  2007. together to somebody

  2008. but sometimes

  2009. there's not a natural

  2010. connection to a who

  2011. what or where

2012. and so what do we do

2013. start at least with two

  2014. you got at least

  2015. minimum two

  2016. and you're like

  2017. we're going to some

  2018. specific people

  2019. and places

2020. and when you do that

  2021. then you report back

2022. to the rest of the

  2023. missional community

  2024. and then the rest

  2025. of the missional community

  2026. praise and strategize

  2027. what's the next step

2028. how do we get more

  2029. people involved

2030. what do we do next

  2031. again

  2032. I don't cut my life

  2033. as precious or valuable

2034. I want to see my work

  2035. fulfilled

  2036. which is to testify

  2037. to the gospel

2038. of the grace of God

  2039. and you go

  2040. and then you're looking

  2041. for

  2042. sometimes it's just

  2043. looking at what you

  2044. already have going on

  2045. in your life

  2046. and just saying

2047. how can I do it

  2048. with more gospel

  2049. intentionality

  2050. sometimes you're looking

  2051. for new people

  2052. in places

  2053. okay

  2054. and you're developing

  2055. strategic

  2056. kind of ways

  2057. of doing that

  2058. alright

  2059. and that's the

  2060. how and the when

  2061. what's the how

  2062. and the when

  2063. it's eating together

  2064. it's events

  2065. it's serving

  2066. it's being a regular

  2067. and it's just

  2068. cold call evangelism

  2069. you know so often

  2070. it's just easy

  2071. to get on mission

  2072. by eating with people

  2073. right

  2074. and again

  2075. this is biblical

  2076. barbecues

  2077. parties

  2078. meals

  2079. maybe

  2080. you know

  2081. having meals

  2082. with someone

  2083. after church

  2084. giving meals away

  2085. having an open

  2086. night at your home

  2087. that you just

  2088. invite people over

  2089. and it's like

  2090. that's just an open

  2091. night that we

  2092. invite people over

  2093. for meals

  2094. might be just a

  2095. coffee or dessert

  2096. night

  2097. might even be

  2098. doing something

  2099. more fun

  2100. like a food contest

  2101. like everybody

  2102. bring a pizza

  2103. homemade pizza

  2104. who will vote

  2105. on the best one

  2106. everybody bring a

  2107. dip

  2108. and we'll vote

  2109. on the best dip

  2110. you know

  2111. everybody bring a

  2112. dessert

  2113. and we'll vote

  2114. on the best

  2115. dessert

  2116. whatever it may

  2117. be

  2118. and just make

  2119. it something

  2120. more fun

  2121. and then that's

  2122. very natural

  2123. to invite somebody

  2124. to

  2125. it's like

  2126. hey you want

  2127. to come to

  2128. this we're

  2129. doing this

  2130. little food

  2131. party

  2132. and we're

  2133. doing a

  2134. contest

  2135. sweet let's

  2136. do it

  2137. right

  2138. it can look

  2139. like events

  2140. right

  2141. utilizing sports

  2142. playing coaching

  2143. or watching

  2144. could be a

  2145. block party

  2146. done block

  2147. parties at our

  2148. house before

  2149. when we lived

  2150. downtown

  2151. bonfires

  2152. game nights

  2153. okay

  2154. which many of

  2155. you guys have

  2156. utilized those

  2157. kind of things

  2158. even poker

  2159. nights together

  2160. holiday

  2161. celebrations

  2162. we did

  2163. for eight

  2164. years in our

  2165. old neighborhood

  2166. we did a

  2167. christmas party

  2168. every year for

  2169. eight years

  2170. and every year

  2171. we met somebody

  2172. new

  2173. every year we got

  2174. in relationship

  2175. to either unchurched

  2176. believers or

  2177. unbelievers that

  2178. we didn't know

  2179. and had more access

  2180. in their life

  2181. to preach the gospel

  2182. and to build

  2183. relationships with

  2184. other believers

  2185. it's easy

  2186. a holiday party

  2187. I mean who

  2188. doesn't want to do

  2189. that right

  2190. common interest

  2191. things

  2192. might even be a

  2193. bible study

  2194. inviting people to

  2195. a bible study

  2196. or even like what

  2197. we did with what

  2198. is a man

  2199. or we've done it

  2200. before we've done

  2201. even a marriage

  2202. seminar to get

  2203. people we had a

  2204. bunch of people in

  2205. our life who are

  2206. having a rough

  2207. time in marriage

  2208. so it's like

  2209. let's do a

  2210. marriage seminar

  2211. and let's invite

  2212. people to that

  2213. okay look like

  2214. serving a blessing

  2215. like I was saying

  2216. before housework

  2217. yard projects

  2218. neighborhood

  2219. cleanups

  2220. or identifying at

  2221. least one way

  2222. that you want to

  2223. express the gospel

  2224. on a regular basis

  2225. through serving

  2226. and then sticking

  2227. to it with a

  2228. group of people

  2229. or it can look

  2230. like being a

  2231. regular right

  2232. like regular

  2233. going to the

  2234. same restaurant

  2235. you're going

  2236. to the same

  2237. store

  2238. going to the

  2239. same grocery

  2240. store

  2241. same coffee

  2242. shop

  2243. same barber

  2244. hairdresser

  2245. same mechanic

  2246. same chiropractor

  2247. I mean

  2248. pick them

  2249. right

  2250. and you just

  2251. consistently go

  2252. to that people

  2253. and then you

  2254. say okay

  2255. our missional

  2256. community

  2257. let's go to

  2258. that person

  2259. together

  2260. let's all

  2261. go to the

  2262. we had one

  2263. time a friend

  2264. of ours

  2265. was a barber

  2266. and like

  2267. everybody go to

  2268. the barber

  2269. I didn't

  2270. I don't have

  2271. any hair

  2272. to get cut

  2273. but the rest

  2274. of the guys

  2275. did

  2276. you know

  2277. the guys

  2278. who had

  2279. hair

  2280. would go

  2281. to this

  2282. barber

  2283. and it was

  2284. great

  2285. because then

  2286. he started

  2287. hanging around

  2288. us

  2289. why

  2290. because we

  2291. all went

  2292. to him

  2293. they all

  2294. went to him

  2295. as his

  2296. barber

  2297. so it made

  2298. sense now

  2299. if we hung

  2300. out outside

  2301. of that

  2302. he knew

  2303. everybody

  2304. you know

  2305. those are

  2306. just easy

  2307. wins like

  2308. that

  2309. or just

  2310. cold call

  2311. evangelism

  2312. where you

  2313. just go

  2314. into a

  2315. specific place

  2316. where people

  2317. are and we're

  2318. just going

  2319. to preach

  2320. the gospel

  2321. maybe it's

  2322. a college

  2323. campus

  2324. maybe it's

  2325. a coffee

  2326. shop

  2327. maybe it's

  2328. a park

  2329. you're just

  2330. meeting people

  2331. and you're

  2332. just preaching

  2333. the gospel

  2334. these are the

  2335. ways we can

  2336. do that

  2337. and seasonal

  2338. rhythms of

  2339. that it

  2340. makes sense

  2341. a lot of

  2342. times in

  2343. spring and

  2344. fall to

  2345. really get

  2346. on mission

  2347. those are

  2348. good seasons

  2349. for mission

  2350. springtime

  2351. fall time

  2352. are great

  2353. for that

  2354. but family

  2355. missionary

  2356. servant

  2357. disciples

  2358. these are

  2359. the identities

  2360. we're trying

  2361. to flesh

  2362. out and

  2363. if we all

  2364. work on these

  2365. things and

  2366. say hey

  2367. I want to

  2368. believe that

  2369. this is who

  2370. I am and

  2371. I'm going to

  2372. live out of

  2373. this identity

  2374. what's going

  2375. to end up

  2376. happening is

  2377. health sprouts

  2378. out in all

  2379. kinds of

  2380. areas as a

  2381. church and

  2382. that's what

  2383. happens and

  2384. do we have

  2385. to do a

  2386. whole bunch

  2387. of other

  2388. stuff not

  2389. really like

  2390. when we're

  2391. just focusing

  2392. on those

  2393. four things

  2394. and doing

  2395. those things

  2396. well so

  2397. many other

  2398. things get

  2399. taken care

  2400. of we're

  2401. being a

  2402. family to

  2403. one another

  2404. we're serving

  2405. one another

  2406. we're doing

  2407. discipleship with

  2408. one another

  2409. and we get

  2410. on mission

  2411. with one

  2412. another think

  2413. of how many

  2414. things get

  2415. taken care of

  2416. when we do

  2417. that amen
