  1. I'm going to talk to you this morning about anxiety.

  2. The prevalence of anxiety is off the charts.

  3. ! The amount of people who struggle with anxiety,

  4. And it's more denied than ever in some ways.

  5. And Proverbs 12, 25 says,

  6. Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down,

  7. but a good word makes him glad.

  8. I hope today would be a good word that would make you glad.

  9. So what is it? What is anxiety?

  10. First and foremost, anxiety is a sin.

  11. Anxiety is a sin.

  12. Philippians 4, verse 6 says,

    Philippians 4:6

  13. Do not be anxious about anything.

  14. Do not be anxious about anything.

  15. Anxiety is a sin. The Bible prohibits it.

  16. Definition of anxiety is apprehensive uneasiness,

  17. nervousness, or worry,

  18. usually over an impending or anticipated ill.

  19. Another way to say that, kind of in your thoughts,

  20. would be something bad is going to happen.

  21. When there's this impending kind of doom in your heart or mind,

  22. that's anxiety.

  23. Another definition would be an abnormal or overwhelming sense of apprehension

  24. and fear,

  25. often marked by physical signs,

  26. such as tension, sweating, increased pulse rate,

  27. by doubt concerning the reality and nature of the threat,

  28. and by self-doubt about one's capacity to cope with it.

  29. Okay?

  30. So another form of anxiety would be that I just, I can't.

  31. I can't do this.

  32. I can't handle this.

  33. And it begins to overwhelm you.

  34. Even physical signs can sometimes happen.

  35. Okay?

  36. What are some of the forms of anxiety we can have?

  37. We can have financial anxiety.

  38. Right?

  39. Some people, I'm going to list some of these things.

  40. I want you to ask the question,

  41. Do I have anxiety in my life?

  42. Don't just automatically say,

  43. No, no, no, no, I'm fine.

  44. Like, listen to these different things and ask the question.

  45. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you and convince you.

  46. Okay?

  47. So financial anxiety.

  48. Do you have anxiety about money or job or your business?

  49. Okay?

  50. Does it ever keep you up at night?

  51. Do you ever find yourself having conversations with people in the shower

  52. who aren't there with you?

  53. You know, are you thinking about things so much so

  54. that it's disrupting your thoughts and your peace and your rest?

  55. Maybe you can't sleep with financial anxiety or social anxiety.

  56. Okay?

  57. You can't stand being alone or you can't stand being with people.

  58. Right?

  59. Could be either way.

  60. You're constantly thinking about what people think.

  61. You're afraid of what people think.

  62. You're measuring all your words and your actions

  63. based on what someone might think of you.

  64. This can manifest in dating and in relationships

  65. and just a common sense of insecurity.

  66. That I don't measure up.

  67. I'm inferior.

  68. What if people think this?

  69. What if people think that?

  70. What if I am not this?

  71. What if I'm not that?

  72. Health anxiety.

  73. Okay?

  74. If you've never had health anxiety

  75. and you've been to WebMD,

  76. I doubt it.

  77. You probably did it.

  78. Okay?

  79. Right?

  80. Because WebMD was built for anxiety.

  81. Isn't it?

  82. I mean, isn't that like the result?

  83. You look at it and there's always something

  84. that you weren't looking for that you all of a sudden have

  85. and you're going to die.

  86. Right?

  87. So, health sickness, health anxiety.

  88. This is a new one

  89. because we have more information available than ever.

  90. People are constantly anxious about,

  91. well, what if I have this?

  92. Or what if I'm, you know,

  93. people just fear of death, period.

  94. Right?

  95. You know, just people thinking,

  96. I'm going to die.

  97. Why do you think you're going to die?

  98. I don't know.

  99. I just have this sense I'm going to die.

  100. Okay.

  101. You know?

  102. Have you been on WebMD lately?

  103. So, there's these different things

  104. and you're trying to self-diagnose

  105. and you're,

  106. if someone's pregnant,

  107. they get worried about the baby.

  108. You know,

  109. there's anxiety about that.

  110. Maybe it's not you.

  111. It's anxiety over your kids.

  112. What if my kids don't make it?

  113. What if my kids have this horrible sickness?

  114. What if my kids die?

  115. What if my spouse,

  116. what if my mom,

  117. what if my dad?

  118. And we get anxious over health.

  119. Right?

  120. There's family anxiety.

  121. You can get anxious over your marriage.

  122. Like,

  123. are we going to stay together?

  124. Get anxious over parenting.

  125. Am I screwing up my kids?

  126. Did I ruin them?

  127. We can get anxious about

  128. just the kids in general.

  129. You know?

  130. Just like,

  131. I can't handle this.

  132. It's overwhelming to the point

  133. where I'm anxious.

  134. I can't even function

  135. with other human beings

  136. because my little kids

  137. have got me so in a tizzy.

  138. Right?

  139. Some of you guys can relate to this.

  140. Leadership anxiety.

  141. You know?

  142. I'm really anxious about

  143. a wife being super anxious

  144. about their husband.

  145. I don't know.

  146. This guy,

  147. he's leading me,

  148. but what if he's not leading me right?

  149. I see the weaknesses in him.

  150. I see the sins in him.

  151. There's no way he could lead me well.

  152. And we're tempted

  153. with control, right?

  154. What about church leadership?

  155. Oh man,

  156. I've seen this before.

  157. I just met with a guy the other day.

  158. And he was telling me

  159. all the ways

  160. that I and the church

  161. were reminding him

  162. of bad things

  163. that he saw

  164. in this other church

  165. that really wounded him.

  166. And I said to the guy,

  167. I said,

  168. was everything

  169. in that previous church wrong?

  170. He's like,

  171. no.

  172. Was everything

  173. in the leadership bad?

  174. He said,

  175. no.

  176. Well,

  177. then if I remind you

  178. of some of those things,

  179. that doesn't necessarily mean

  180. that's a bad thing.

  181. Okay?

  182. Let's not have

  183. your reference point

  184. be that last church

  185. that hurt you

  186. or harmed you.

  187. Let's have the reference point

  188. be the scriptures

  189. and whether something's

  190. right or wrong.

  191. And so,

  192. but you can have anxiety

  193. about that.

  194. Especially if you're new,

  195. coming around a new church.

  196. And I know

  197. there's some of us

  198. who are new

  199. coming around the church

  200. and we start,

  201. someone says something,

  202. someone does something,

  203. like,

  204. I've seen that before.

  205. I've experienced that

  206. the last time

  207. I was burned.

  208. That person said that to me.

  209. Last time I was burned,

  210. that person acted like that.

  211. You remind me

  212. just like that charlatan

  213. who led the last church

  214. who was in.

  215. And it's like,

  216. oh yeah,

  217. that can happen.

  218. But,

  219. is it true?

  220. And are we getting anxious

  221. about it?

  222. And who are we following?

  223. Are we following a spouse,

  224. ultimately?

  225. Are we following

  226. church leadership,

  227. ultimately?

  228. We can get anxious

  229. about government,

  230. anxious about our president,

  231. anxious about the Congress,

  232. our governors,

  233. the mayor.

  234. We can get anxious

  235. about those things

  236. and say,

  237. they're going to

  238. screw everything up.

  239. They're going to ruin

  240. our society.

  241. But are we ultimately

  242. following them?

  243. We can even get anxious

  244. about God,

  245. thinking that he doesn't

  246. have it under control.

  247. That he's not ultimately

  248. a good leader.

  249. We get anxious

  250. about leadership,

  251. right?

  252. But who are we following?

  253. There's stuff anxiety.

  254. Hey,

  255. what's stuff anxiety?

  256. Your house.

  257. You know?

  258. Your,

  259. so it can just be

  260. the house itself

  261. for payers,

  262. things going wrong,

  263. being able to pay for it.

  264. Or it could just be

  265. hospitality.

  266. Like,

  267. my house isn't clean enough.

  268. My house isn't nice enough.

  269. I don't know if I want

  270. to have people in here.

  271. What if they wreck stuff?

  272. What if they see

  273. how I really live?

  274. What if they go

  275. in that room?

  276. You know,

  277. you know,

  278. whatever.

  279. Your car.

  280. Is my car going to make it?

  281. It's making that weird noise.

  282. I'm anxious about it.

  283. I don't have money for a car.

  284. If my car gets broken now,

  285. my car is broken now.

  286. I took it in the shop.

  287. I don't know how much

  288. it's going to be.

  289. You know,

  290. you can get anxious

  291. about all kinds of things.

  292. It's really like,

  293. I wasn't anxious,

  294. but now I'm starting to get anxious.

  295. Life anxiety,

  296. responsibility,

  297. decisions.

  298. Right?

  299. Some of us can't.

  300. We have a decision to make

  301. and we freeze.

  302. We just get so anxious about it.

  303. Or fear of failure.

  304. Fear of the future.

  305. Anxiousness about

  306. the unknown.

  307. What's going to happen?

  308. How are things going to be?

  309. Or when life doesn't make sense,

  310. we can get anxious about it.

  311. Or we can get anxious about sin.

  312. Right?

  313. We get anxious because we're tempted

  314. and we think,

  315. oh my gosh,

  316. am I going to fall?

  317. Am I going to give in?

  318. Am I going to,

  319. I'm anxious about getting into

  320. some position of responsibility

  321. or leadership

  322. because what if I screw it up?

  323. What if,

  324. what if I'm the one who falls

  325. and disillusions more people?

  326. I've experienced that.

  327. I don't want to do that

  328. with other people.

  329. We get anxious about secret sins.

  330. Well,

  331. what if this person's in secret sin?

  332. What if my leader's in secret sin?

  333. What if my spouse is in secret sin?

  334. We get anxious about the devil

  335. and what he's doing

  336. and how he's deceiving people.

  337. And there's so many things

  338. to get anxious about.

  339. Right?

  340. So many things.

  341. And it's pervasive.

  342. And more than ever,

  343. we just say,

  344. yeah,

  345. that's just the way it is.

  346. And this is just part of life.

  347. Some of us even say,

  348. well,

  349. that's just my personality.

  350. I just have a sinful personality.

  351. Yeah,

  352. join the club.

  353. We all do.

  354. That doesn't mean

  355. you have to accept it.

  356. That doesn't mean

  357. you have to say,

  358. oh,

  359. this is going to be the norm.

  360. Sin shall no longer rule over you.

  361. Okay?

  362. So I want to stick in one main text.

  363. I'll reference some of the rest of the scriptures,

  364. but I want to go to Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4:4–9

  365. verses 4 through 9.

  366. Okay?

  367. So if you've got your Bibles,

  368. you can look at that.

  369. I'm going to read through it first,

  370. and then we'll jump through it verse by verse.

  371. Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  372. 4 through 9.

  373. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  374. Again, I'll say,

  375. rejoice.

  376. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

  377. The Lord is at hand.

  378. Do not be anxious about anything,

  379. but in everything,

  380. for at prayer and supplication,

  381. with thanksgiving,

  382. let your requests be made known to God.

  383. And the peace of God,

  384. which surpasses all understanding,

  385. will guard your hearts

  386. and your minds

  387. in Christ Jesus.

  388. Finally,

  389. brothers,

  390. whatever is true,

  391. whatever is honorable,

  392. whatever is just,

  393. whatever is pure,

  394. whatever is lovely,

  395. whatever is commendable,

  396. if there's any excellence,

  397. if there's anything

  398. worthy of praise,

  399. think about these things.

  400. And the God of peace

  401. will be with you.

  402. This is the word of God.

  403. Okay, let's look at it.

  404. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  405. Again, I will say rejoice.

  406. So for starters,

  407. the context of this main verse,

  408. we're looking at verse 6,

  409. is preceded by verse 4.

  410. And it says,

  411. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  412. Could it be that oftentimes

  413. what leads into anxiety

  414. is a lack of gratefulness for God,

  415. is a lack of joy in God,

  416. a lack of rejoicing in God?

  417. And if you don't think he meant it,

  418. he said it twice.

  419. He said rejoice in the Lord always.

  420. Not sometimes,

  421. not most of the time.

  422. Well, yeah, I know.

  423. Rejoice in the Lord

  424. when things are good.

  425. No.

  426. Rejoice in the Lord at all times.

  427. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  428. If you rejoice in the Lord always,

  429. can you be anxious?

  430. That'd be pretty difficult.

  431. Wouldn't it be awesome

  432. if you orchestrated your life

  433. in such a way

  434. that anxiety was hard to do?

  435. Wouldn't that be awesome?

  436. Like, I'm having a hard time.

  437. You're having a hard time?

  438. What are you having a hard time with?

  439. I'm having a really hard time being anxious.

  440. It's been really difficult.

  441. I just keep rejoicing in the Lord.

  442. I do it always.

  443. And I have a hard time being anxious.

  444. Wow.

  445. Wish I struggled with that.

  446. You know, what if we struggled

  447. to be anxious

  448. because we rejoice in the Lord?

  449. How often?

  450. Always.

  451. And if God wasn't

  452. trying to make this clear enough,

  453. through Paul,

  454. he said again,

  455. I will say,

  456. rejoice.

  457. He's doubling down.

  458. You must rejoice in the Lord,

  459. always.

  460. You should be thankful in Him.

  461. You should bless Him

  462. at all times.

  463. You're looking for opportunities

  464. to say,

  465. Lord, You're my joy.

  466. You're my hope.

  467. Okay?

  468. And he says,

  469. let your reasonableness

  470. be known to everyone.

  471. Or let your gentleness

  472. be known to everyone.

  473. Could it be that anxiety

  474. makes you unreasonable?

  475. Could it be that

  476. in the context of this?

  477. Because the very next verse

  478. is the Lord is at hand.

  479. Do not be anxious about anything.

  480. But right before that,

  481. he says,

  482. let your reasonableness

  483. be known to anyone.

  484. Could it be that anxiety

  485. makes you unreasonable?

  486. Why is it unreasonable?

  487. Why is anxiety unreasonable?

  488. Why does it make you unreasonable?

  489. Why does rejoicing the Lord

  490. make your reasonableness

  491. known to all?

  492. Because of the most important

  493. part of this verse.

  494. And it's this.

  495. Right before verse 6

  496. when it says,

  497. do not be anxious about anything.

  498. Which we all know this verse, right?

  499. Maybe you haven't memorized.

  500. Maybe you even knew the citation.

  501. You know, yeah.

  502. Philippians 4, 6.

  503. I got that one.

  504. It's on my fridge.

  505. It's on my mirror

  506. in the bathroom.

  507. You know, I know that one.

  508. I memorized that one

  509. when I was a kid.

  510. But what about

  511. the five words

  512. right before it?

  513. The Lord

  514. is at hand.

  515. The Lord

  516. is at hand.

  517. That's the key part,

  518. right?

  519. Why should I not

  520. be anxious about anything?

  521. Because of the first half

  522. of the sentence,

  523. it's the same sentence.

  524. Because the Lord

  525. is near.

  526. Did you hear me?

  527. The Lord

  528. is at hand.

  529. Other versions say

  530. the Lord is near.

  531. If the Lord

  532. is near,

  533. not, I mean,

  534. not your best friend

  535. is near,

  536. not like a

  537. good spouse

  538. is near,

  539. not like a brother

  540. or sister is near.

  541. No, no, no.

  542. This is way better.

  543. Did you hear

  544. what it said?

  545. The Lord

  546. is near.

  547. The Lord

  548. is at hand.

  549. Do you know this?

  550. And what does it

  551. mean to you?

  552. What does it mean

  553. to you that the

  554. Lord is at hand?

  555. Who is this

  556. Lord that you

  557. speak of?

  558. Who is this

  559. God that you

  560. speak of?

  561. Is he a distant

  562. God?

  563. Aloof and uncaring?

  564. Is he a God

  565. who does not

  566. care for his

  567. people?

  568. Is he a God

  569. who breaks

  570. bruised wicks

  571. and puts out,

  572. sorry,

  573. breaks bruised

  574. reeds and puts

  575. out smoldering

  576. wicks?

  577. Is that the

  578. God he is?

  579. No, it's not.

  580. He doesn't

  581. break the bruised

  582. reed.

  583. He doesn't

  584. put out the

  585. smoldering wick.

  586. He is not far.

  587. It says the

  588. Lord is at

  589. hand.

  590. The Lord

  591. is near.

  592. Okay?

  593. It says he will

  594. never leave you

  595. or forsake you.

  596. Do you believe

  597. this about God?

  598. What you believe

  599. about God

  600. determines whether

  601. or not you're

  602. going to be

  603. anxious.

  604. Do you believe

  605. that he's near?

  606. If you believe

  607. that a distant

  608. God is near,

  609. a God that

  610. doesn't care about

  611. you is near,

  612. a God that's

  613. not for you

  614. is near,

  615. well, so what?

  616. That actually

  617. makes me more

  618. anxious.

  619. If I don't

  620. know what

  621. he's going

  622. to do,

  623. if I don't

  624. know if

  625. he's good,

  626. if I don't

  627. know if

  628. he's sovereign,

  629. what comfort

  630. is that to

  631. me?

  632. He's meaning

  633. to say the

  634. Lord is near

  635. as a comfort,

  636. as a thing

  637. to lay up

  638. right into the

  639. next verse.

  640. Do not be

  641. anxious about

  642. anything.

  643. The reason

  644. do not be

  645. anxious about

  646. anything has

  647. weight is

  648. because the

  649. Lord is near.

  650. Do you

  651. believe that?

  652. Do you believe

  653. that the Lord

  654. is near?

  655. And do you

  656. believe that he

  657. is who he

  658. says he is?

  659. Do you

  660. believe in the

  661. God of the

  662. scriptures?

  663. What are you

  664. believing about

  665. God?

  666. Behind every

  667. sin is some

  668. form of

  669. unbelief about

  670. God.

  671. Okay?

  672. The Lord is

  673. at hand.

  674. Do not be

  675. anxious about

  676. anything.

  677. So you might

  678. say, and this

  679. is the ultimate

  680. yeah but verse in

  681. the Bible in our

  682. culture today.

  683. Right?

  684. And I want to

  685. ask you a

  686. question.

  687. How do you

  688. relate to the

  689. scriptures?

  690. Are you a

  691. yeah but

  692. interpreter of

  693. the scriptures?

  694. Does the

  695. culture so

  696. apprehended you

  697. that you

  698. read the

  699. scriptures and

  700. say yeah but

  701. is your natural

  702. inclination?

  703. When the

  704. scriptures say

  705. don't be

  706. anxious, you're

  707. like yeah but

  708. you don't

  709. understand.

  710. My parents

  711. were anxious

  712. before me.

  713. My mom

  714. before me had

  715. postpartum

  716. depression.

  717. You know,

  718. that's just the

  719. way it is.

  720. I'm just, you

  721. know, it's part

  722. of my heritage.

  723. I am an

  724. anxious person

  725. by nature and

  726. that's just the

  727. way it is and

  728. that's okay.

  729. But this says

  730. do not be

  731. anxious about

  732. anything.

  733. Do not be

  734. anxious about

  735. anything.

  736. That's pretty

  737. all-inclusive.

  738. Anything.

  739. Don't be

  740. anxious about

  741. anything.

  742. But how many

  743. things have we

  744. justified as,

  745. well of course

  746. there's certain

  747. things you

  748. shouldn't be

  749. anxious about.

  750. But I have a

  751. list just as long

  752. as the things

  753. that I've

  754. justified in

  755. my own

  756. mind that

  757. it's okay

  758. to be

  759. anxious about.

  760. And then

  761. the word

  762. of the Lord

  763. says,

  764. don't be

  765. anxious about

  766. anything.

  767. About anything.

  768. Why?

  769. Because the

  770. Lord is near.

  771. The Lord is

  772. near.

  773. Don't be

  774. anxious about

  775. anything.

  776. How many

  777. things have

  778. we accepted

  779. in our life

  780. as acceptable

  781. forms of

  782. anxiety that

  783. the scriptures

  784. are saying?

  785. No, this

  786. was never

  787. meant for you.

  788. You're a

  789. child of God.

  790. How dare you

  791. think that this

  792. was the norm?

  793. How dare you

  794. think that you

  795. are living in a

  796. reality where the

  797. Lord is not

  798. near and that

  799. the Lord who

  800. is near is not

  801. mighty to save

  802. you from your

  803. sin of anxiety?

  804. He is.

  805. Do you believe

  806. that?

  807. You see, when you

  808. don't believe that,

  809. we get into fear,

  810. which leads to

  811. control.

  812. Look at Abraham

  813. and Isaac for an

  814. example, right?

  815. Remember the story

  816. that Abraham did

  817. twice, actually?

  818. Abraham is

  819. traveling because

  820. the Lord sent him

  821. out and he's got

  822. his wife with

  823. him.

  824. And they go

  825. into a place

  826. where there's a

  827. king and he

  828. says to his

  829. wife, half

  830. truth, right?

  831. Says, hey, just

  832. tell him, tell him

  833. you're my sister.

  834. Okay?

  835. Tell him you're my

  836. sister.

  837. Well, he

  838. technically was a

  839. half sister.

  840. Okay?

  841. And he says, just

  842. tell him you're a

  843. sister, but instead

  844. of telling him that

  845. you're a wife.

  846. Why?

  847. He was afraid that

  848. he'd be killed

  849. because she was

  850. attractive.

  851. Well, what did the

  852. first king do when

  853. that happened?

  854. The king took her

  855. as his wife.

  856. Can you imagine

  857. this?

  858. Out of anxiety, he

  859. said, hey, don't

  860. tell him the full

  861. truth because I'm

  862. afraid.

  863. So I'm going to

  864. try to control

  865. this and manipulate

  866. it.

  867. And his wife was

  868. taken by another

  869. man to be his

  870. wife.

  871. That's a bad

  872. day.

  873. That's not good.

  874. Right?

  875. And you know, God

  876. intervened.

  877. Okay?

  878. And you think, wow,

  879. crisis averted.

  880. I'm never going to

  881. do that again.

  882. He does it again.

  883. He does it again.

  884. He literally does it

  885. again.

  886. And he taught it to

  887. his son.

  888. Because then if you

  889. keep going in

  890. Genesis, what did

  891. Isaac do?

  892. Isaac does the same

  893. thing.

  894. In Genesis 26, 7,

  895. he says, she is my

  896. sister, for he feared

  897. to say, my wife,

  898. thinking lest the men

  899. of the place should

  900. kill me because of

  901. Rebecca, because she

  902. was attractive in

  903. appearance.

  904. Fear and anxiety

  905. lead to control.

  906. control.

  907. And guess what?

  908. It's not real

  909. control.

  910. It's an illusion of

  911. control.

  912. For those of you who

  913. don't know this, I have

  914. a word for you.

  915. You're not in control.

  916. You might think you

  917. are, but it's all an

  918. illusion.

  919. You want to talk about

  920. a simulation?

  921. We are living in a

  922. simulation.

  923. I'm going to tell you

  924. that this morning.

  925. The simulation we're

  926. living in is that

  927. you're in control.

  928. And most people

  929. believe it.

  930. It's a simulation.

  931. It's not real.

  932. It's not true.

  933. It dictates the whole

  934. world and what they

  935. do.

  936. But the truth is,

  937. the reality is, there

  938. is someone in control

  939. and it's not you.

  940. It's God.

  941. God is in control.

  942. And I hope for most

  943. of you, not hopefully

  944. all of you, that's

  945. good news.

  946. It's good news that I'm

  947. not in control.

  948. But when you feel like

  949. you have to be in

  950. control, that's what

  951. anxiety leads to.

  952. I have to be in

  953. control.

  954. And you can't.

  955. That's what makes you

  956. anxious.

  957. I feel like I have to

  958. be in control, but I'm

  959. not in control.

  960. What am I to do?

  961. Stop being in control.

  962. Don't be anxious about

  963. anything.

  964. Why?

  965. How?

  966. Because the Lord is

  967. near.

  968. Because the Lord is

  969. near.

  970. Romans 8.31 says,

  971. If God is for us, who

  972. can be against us?

  973. And isn't that the

  974. thing that, you know,

  975. that whole list of

  976. things I was giving

  977. you, isn't that like

  978. the group?

  979. That's a pretty good

  980. list, don't you think,

  981. of the things that are

  982. against us?

  983. And most of you are

  984. like, yeah, I've

  985. thought about probably a

  986. lot of those things.

  987. How many times have

  988. we been tempted to

  989. anxiety those things,

  990. given into those

  991. things?

  992. There's a whole list

  993. of things that are

  994. against us.

  995. And if that list is

  996. ever short from you,

  997. all you have to do is

  998. watch the news, and

  999. it'll just grow, right?

  1000. There's new ways than

  1001. ever before to be

  1002. anxious about things.

1003. you think, but there's so

  1004. many things against me.

1005. But the Word of God

1006. says, but God is for us.

1007. And if God is for us,

  1008. really?

1009. Who can be against us?

  1010. It's a rhetorical

  1011. question.

1012. He's saying, if God is

1013. for you, no one can be

  1014. against you.

1015. No thing could honestly be

1016. against you if God is for

  1017. you.

1018. Anxiety, in its truest sense,

1019. is really an act of pride.

1020. It's an act of pride.

  1021. 1 Peter 5 talks about this,

1022. and then we'll get back to

  1023. our text.

  1024. 1 Peter 5, 5-7 says,

  1025. God opposes the proud,

1026. but gives grace to the

  1027. humble.

  1028. Humble yourselves,

  1029. therefore, under the

1030. mighty hand of God, so

1031. that at the proper time

  1032. He may exalt you,

  1033. casting all your anxieties

1034. on Him, because He cares

  1035. for you.

  1036. So, humility is taking

  1037. your anxiety and casting

  1038. it on the Lord.

  1039. Humility is saying,

  1040. God, I cannot handle

  1041. this.

  1042. I'm not in control.

  1043. I can't, I'm not in control

  1044. of my health.

1045. I'm not in control of my

  1046. kids.

1047. I'm not in control of my

  1048. leadership.

  1049. I'm not in control,

  1050. ultimately, of my finances.

1051. I'm not in control of my,

1052. whether I'm going to die or

  1053. not.

1054. I am not in control.

1055. And so, my humility says,

  1056. you're God, I'm not.

  1057. You're for me.

  1058. I make stupid decisions.

1059. God, I cast all my

  1060. anxieties on you,

1061. because you care for me.

1062. The reason we don't cast

1063. our anxieties on Him is

1064. because we don't think He

  1065. cares for us.

1066. Some of us need to get

  1067. honest this morning and

  1068. say, and I know it's not

1069. the right answer, but some

1070. of us have to give the

  1071. real answer.

1072. The right answer is, oh,

1073. yes, God cares for me.

1074. God is good all the time,

  1075. brother.

  1076. Good to see you.

  1077. See you next week.

  1078. You know?

1079. And some lame lie, you

  1080. know?

1081. Because some of us don't

  1082. really believe that.

1083. Some of us have to be

  1084. honest and say, I don't

1085. believe that He cares for me.

  1086. And that's why it's hard

1087. for me to cast my

  1088. anxieties on the Lord.

  1089. I feel like I'm on my

  1090. own.

  1091. I feel like He doesn't

  1092. really care.

1093. And I've believed it for

1094. all this time, ever since

  1095. that one thing happened

  1096. to me.

1097. It was at that time I

1098. believed I'm on my own.

  1099. No one's looking after

  1100. me.

1101. No one's taking care of

  1102. me.

1103. And we come up with a

1104. case that we've built in

1105. our head for why God

1106. isn't for us and why we

1107. have to be the one who's

  1108. fighting for ourselves.

1109. And if you ever want to

  1110. know if you're not

1111. believing that God is the

1112. one who fights for you

1113. and is for you, just look

1114. at if you're fighting for

  1115. yourself.

  1116. The evidence of your

1117. unbelief in the God who

1118. fights for you is that

  1119. you're fighting for

  1120. yourself.

  1121. The evidence of your

1122. belief in the God who

1123. fights for you is that

1124. you are marked by rest.

  1125. By rest.

  1126. Are you at rest?

1127. If you cast all your

  1128. anxieties on Him because

1129. He cares for you, that's

  1130. an act of humility.

1131. Pride says, no, I got

  1132. this, Lord.

1133. No, I'm going to do this

  1134. on my own.

1135. So, you have all this

1136. here in Philippians 4, and

1137. then He really brings in

1138. the good stuff right here

  1139. in verse 7.

  1140. Okay?

1141. So, do not be anxious

  1142. about anything.

  1143. All right?

  1144. But in everything, offer

  1145. your request to God.

  1146. Actually, did I skip?

  1147. Oh, I'm sorry.

  1148. I skipped this part.

  1149. But in everything, by

  1150. prayer and supplication,

  1151. with thanksgiving, let

  1152. your request be made

  1153. known to God.

  1154. Okay?

1155. And so, the answer is

  1156. prayer.

  1157. And it's not some

  1158. things.

  1159. It's not most things.

  1160. He says, don't be

  1161. anxious about anything,

  1162. but in everything.

  1163. You hear this all-inclusive

  1164. language.

1165. Again, I'm going to say

  1166. it again.

1167. You know I just said it,

1168. but I'm going to say it

  1169. again.

  1170. The yeah-but culture,

  1171. the yeah-but mentality,

  1172. when we read the

  1173. scriptures, it says,

  1174. there's multiple reasons

1175. where my anxiety is okay.

  1176. Listen to the all-inclusive

  1177. language in Philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  1178. chapter 4.

1179. Do not be anxious about

  1180. anything, but in

  1181. everything.

  1182. This is all-inclusive.

1183. All things are to be

  1184. brought before the Lord

  1185. by prayer and

  1186. supplication, with

  1187. thanksgiving, let your

  1188. request be made known.

  1189. Okay?

  1190. Prayer, supplication,

  1191. with thanksgiving.

  1192. Again, it's with

  1193. thanksgiving.

  1194. Why?

  1195. Because you're rejoicing

  1196. in Him.

1197. You're looking to Him so

  1198. that you're not in

  1199. anxiety.

1200. Now, it says, let your

  1201. request be made known.

1202. Some of us are really

  1203. good at this.

  1204. We make our requests

  1205. known, but we're really

  1206. bad at what the

  1207. scriptures say.

  1208. We're not making them

  1209. known to God.

1210. You see what it says

  1211. here?

  1212. It doesn't just say,

  1213. let your request be

  1214. made known.

1215. That's not the end of

  1216. the sentence.

  1217. It says, let your

  1218. request be made known

  1219. to God.

1220. Some of us are really

  1221. good at talking about

1222. all the bad things in

  1223. our life and how

  1224. overwhelming our life

  1225. is, and we complain

  1226. about things, and we

  1227. gripe about things, and

  1228. we think that the

1229. world is against us, and

  1230. we think that nothing

1231. ever goes right for us,

  1232. and we're just

  1233. constantly spitting out

  1234. unbelief.

1235. And it says, but in

  1236. everything by prayer and

  1237. supplication and

  1238. thanksgiving, let your

  1239. request be made known

  1240. to God.

  1241. To God.

  1242. Where are you taking

  1243. these things?

  1244. Where are you taking

  1245. your anxieties?

1246. Do you have a prayer

  1247. life that is

  1248. emblematic of a

  1249. casting of your cares

  1250. onto the Lord?

  1251. Is this what your

  1252. prayer life looks like?

1253. Don't feel bad about it.

  1254. Don't think, oh, man, I

1255. just feel like I'm just

  1256. thinking about myself.

1257. Listen, this is part of

  1258. what prayer and

  1259. supplication is for.

1260. It's for you to offload

  1261. these problems onto the

  1262. one who loves taking

  1263. it.

  1264. You're never going to

  1265. burden him.

  1266. It's not like he's

  1267. like, man, my

  1268. followers are great, but

1269. this one guy, man, he's

  1270. just constantly just

  1271. dumping all this stuff

  1272. on me.

  1273. God's not like that.

  1274. He's a father.

1275. He never tires of you

  1276. coming to him.

1277. He never tires of you

  1278. offering your anxieties

  1279. to him.

1280. He wants to take them.

1281. And if you ever doubt

  1282. that, if you're ever

  1283. wondering how badly God

1284. wants to be near us,

  1285. how badly, to what

1286. extent will God go to

  1287. be near us?

  1288. Look to the cross.

1289. This is why we have to

  1290. remember him every week,

  1291. like Sam was saying,

  1292. because we forget.

  1293. Later in Psalm 46,

    Psalms 46:10

1294. verse 10 of the Psalm

1295. he read to call us to

  1296. worship, it says,

  1297. Be still and know

  1298. that I am God.

  1299. Be still and know

  1300. that I am God.

1301. Some of us need to

1302. just be still and say,

  1303. God, I trust you.

  1304. I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm,

  1305. but I'm having a hard

1306. time and so I'm going

1307. to cast my cares on

  1308. you.

1309. I'm going to, in prayer

  1310. supplication.

1311. But I'm taking them to

  1312. God.

1313. Some of us lean too

  1314. heavily on other people.

1315. Some of us lean too

  1316. heavily on our spouse.

1317. Some of us lean too

  1318. heavily on a certain

  1319. relationship or our

  1320. pastors or whatever.

  1321. Listen, when you're

  1322. trying to pull something

  1323. from someone that can't

1324. give it to you, you're

  1325. automatically going to

  1326. frustrate the

  1327. relationship.

  1328. Okay?

  1329. When you're trying to

1330. treat someone as if they

1331. can give you what only

1332. God can give you, you'll

  1333. frustrate yourself and

  1334. them because they can't.

1335. They can't give it to

  1336. you.

  1337. Right?

1338. This is where we have to

  1339. go to God.

1340. They have to go to God.

  1341. Verse seven says, and

1342. the peace of God, which

  1343. surpasses all

  1344. understanding, will guard

  1345. your hearts and your

  1346. minds in Christ Jesus.

  1347. Okay?

  1348. Here's the promise now.

  1349. Right?

  1350. He's not just throwing

1351. out a command and saying,

  1352. hey, do this.

  1353. He's saying, do this.

1354. And then the peace of

  1355. God, which surpasses

  1356. all understanding.

  1357. Listen, it's a peace that

  1358. surpasses understanding.

1359. This is why you can't say

  1360. yeah, but to the

  1361. scriptures because of

  1362. brain science.

1363. This is why you can't say

  1364. yeah, but to the

  1365. scriptures because we

  1366. figured out new things

1367. about the brain and the

  1368. body.

1369. That means anxiety is now

  1370. acceptable.

1371. There is a peace of God

  1372. that surpasses

  1373. understanding.

  1374. You can't appeal to

  1375. understanding to say you

1376. don't need the peace of

  1377. God that surpasses

  1378. understanding because it

  1379. surpasses understanding.

  1380. You get it?

  1381. Like that's the point.

  1382. This is supernatural.

1383. This is bigger than any

1384. white coat can tell you.

  1385. All right?

1386. Some guy with a bunch of

1387. letters behind his name is

1388. going to tell you, no, it's

  1389. okay to be anxious.

  1390. Don't listen to the

  1391. preacher, man.

  1392. Don't listen to the

  1393. offensive book, the Bible

1394. telling you not to be

  1395. anxious about anything.

  1396. That's okay.

  1397. You can do that.

  1398. We've actually discovered

  1399. that it's okay.

  1400. We've actually discovered

1401. that it's not good for

1402. people to tell you that.

  1403. In the Bible, this

  1404. ancient text, this thing

  1405. that has existed before

1406. you were ever even a

  1407. thought in your parents'

1408. mind, this truth is here,

  1409. that there is a

  1410. surpassing greatness and

  1411. knowledge, a peace that

  1412. surpasses all understanding,

  1413. that will guard your

1414. hearts and your minds in

  1415. Christ Jesus.

1416. But some people are like,

1417. well, what if it doesn't?

1418. Like, what if I do this

  1419. and it doesn't?

  1420. What does it say?

1421. Does it say it might

  1422. guard you?

1423. Does it say hopefully it

  1424. will guard you?

1425. Does it say, man, there's

1426. a really good chance it

  1427. will guard you?

1428. That's not what it says

1429. when I look at the text.

  1430. What does it say?

1431. The peace of God which

  1432. surpasses all understanding

  1433. will.

  1434. It will guard you.

1435. Do you believe the word

  1436. of God?

1437. Do you believe that what

  1438. he says is true?

1439. Do you believe that God

1440. himself is the author of

  1441. this text?

1442. And that Paul was inspired

1443. by the Holy Spirit when he

  1444. wrote it?

1445. And that the peace of God

  1446. which surpasses all

  1447. understanding will guard

1448. your heart and your minds

  1449. in Christ Jesus?

1450. I love that the word used

  1451. here is guard.

1452. Do you believe that there's

1453. a kind of peace that comes

1454. from God that is actually

  1455. violent?

  1456. What way?

  1457. Oh, it's violent against

  1458. every other obstacle that

  1459. would come against you.

  1460. There's a peace of God that

1461. guards your heart and your

  1462. mind.

1463. Do you know what I'm

  1464. talking about?

  1465. I'm talking about.

1466. You all know of a felt

1467. kind of violence that you

1468. feel of anxiety trying to

1469. get into your mind, into

  1470. your heart.

1471. It almost feels like it's

  1472. a war.

1473. It almost feels like it's

  1474. violence.

1475. Some of us have been so

  1476. entrenched in it, even

  1477. sometimes demonically, that

1478. it feels like we're going

  1479. crazy.

1480. And we feel like, man, I'm

  1481. under attack.

  1482. I feel like I can't get out

  1483. from underneath this.

1484. But the word of God

1485. shouts to us and says,

1486. the peace of God which

  1487. surpasses all understanding

1488. will guard your hearts and

1489. your minds in Christ Jesus.

  1490. That isn't a word of

  1491. action.

1492. That is a violent word to

1493. say, no, God's power stands

1494. against all these things that

1495. would seek to come into our

1496. hearts and minds and put

  1497. anxiety there.

  1498. Do you believe that?

1499. Do you believe that God will

1500. give us that kind of peace, a

  1501. peace that guards?

1502. Do you know of this peace?

  1503. There's nothing like it.

1504. You might even say it

  1505. surpasses understanding.

  1506. Because it does.

1507. He then says in verse 8,

  1508. Finally, brothers, whatever

  1509. is true, whatever is

  1510. honorable, whatever is

  1511. just, whatever is pure,

  1512. whatever is lovely, whatever

  1513. is commendable, if there's

  1514. any excellence, if there's

  1515. anything worthy of praise,

  1516. think about these things.

  1517. Okay?

1518. So, so often the reason we

1519. get anxious is because we're

  1520. thinking about the wrong

  1521. thing.

  1522. Right?

  1523. We're just feeding it.

  1524. That's why everybody laughs

1525. when you hear about WebMD,

  1526. right?

1527. Because so many people have

  1528. done it.

  1529. It's like, I didn't even know

1530. there was these many things

1531. that could happen to me.

  1532. Now that I know, I'm, I'm

  1533. super afraid.

1534. And we hear about more

  1535. tragedies than ever before.

  1536. The proliferation of news

1537. makes us, it's not that even

  1538. certain things have

  1539. increased.

1540. In fact, you know, the

  1541. irony is child kidnappings

1542. are way down from when I was a

  1543. kid.

1544. But do you think people are

1545. less afraid of them now?

  1546. No way.

  1547. They're way more afraid.

1548. People are way more afraid of

  1549. that kind of stuff.

1550. Even though factually, it's way

  1551. less possible of happening

1552. than what it used to.

  1553. But what is it?

1554. It's because we hear about

  1555. every single one.

1556. You used to not hear about it

1557. in that state and that state.

1558. You only heard about it if it

  1559. was in your neighborhood.

1560. Now we hear about it

  1561. everywhere.

1562. We hear about every bad

  1563. thing everywhere.

  1564. That's what sells.

  1565. That's what sells news.

  1566. Okay?

1567. What are you thinking about

  1568. though?

  1569. Are you thinking about

  1570. whatever is pure?

  1571. Whatever is lovely?

  1572. Whatever is just?

  1573. Whatever is commendable?

  1574. If there's any excellence,

1575. if there's anything worthy of

  1576. praise, think about these

  1577. things.

1578. What is your thought life?

1579. What do you think about?

1580. Are you taking your thoughts

1581. captive and you casting your

1582. anxieties on the Lord because

  1583. he cares for you?

  1584. Verse 9, he says,

1585. What you have learned and

1586. received and heard and seen

1587. in me, practice these things.

  1588. What you've learned, received,

1589. and heard and seen in me.

1590. So it's not just book knowledge.

  1591. This isn't just, we're not just

1592. supposed to grow in our freedom

1593. from anxiety just by reading,

  1594. just by learning.

1595. We're also supposed to hear and

1596. see it in other people.

1597. See what he's saying here?

1598. What you've learned and received

1599. and heard and seen in me,

  1600. practice these things.

  1601. Practice these things.

1602. He was a living model of this.

1603. How do we know that?

1604. Well, first of all, he's saying

1605. it, but this is the great thing

  1606. about the scriptures.

1607. When we have stuff like this

1608. where Paul's talking about this,

1609. Acts chapter 16 tells us what

    Acts 16 chapter mention

1610. was going on when he was in

1611. Philippi talking to these people,

  1612. right?

1613. You know, God calls him over to

  1614. Macedonia.

1615. He travels over to Macedonia.

1616. He comes in there, all right?

  1617. Starts preaching the gospel.

1618. Lydia gets saved, all right?

1619. And then this slave girl with

1620. divination powers is annoying Paul,

1621. so he casts a demon out of her.

  1622. Interesting little event there,

  1623. right?

1624. And throws the economy into turmoil

  1625. in Philippi.

1626. And so what do they do?

1627. Well, that was no small thing.

1628. His little annoyance turned out

1629. to be a rough day.

  1630. Okay.

1631. They attacked, they attacked him.

1632. And I think I can't, is this Silas in

  1633. here?

  1634. I can't remember.

1635. It's either Silas or Silas and

  1636. Timothy.

1637. Anyways, the crew he's with, they

  1638. attack him.

  1639. They strip them.

  1640. Okay.

1641. So they're, they attack him.

1642. They strip him from his clothes.

1643. They beat, they beat him with rods.

  1644. Okay.

1645. So not just hitting him.

1646. They're beating him with rods.

1647. And then they throw him in prison.

  1648. Okay.

1649. Attacked, stripped, and beaten with rods.

1650. And what does he do when he gets to

  1651. jail?

  1652. Is he anxious?

1653. Is he sitting there worried and

1654. complaining, what are we going to do?

1655. We just got, you know, he could have,

1656. remember the verse that says,

  1657. whatever's true, whatever's just.

1658. Paul could have just sat there and

1659. thought how unjust this was.

  1660. He's a Roman citizen.

1661. He's, there was no trial.

  1662. There was no accusation.

1663. They just, this is vigilante,

  1664. quote unquote, justice.

  1665. It was injustice.

1666. He could have meditated on how

  1667. injustice was.

1668. Does he do that though?

  1669. What does he do?

1670. Look at Philip in Acts 16.

  1671. What's the first, what's the first

1672. thing you find them doing when they

  1673. get into that jail?

1674. Praying and singing hymns to God.

  1675. Paul modeled this.

1676. He says, now think of this verse

1677. nine, what you have learned and

1678. received and heard and seen in me

  1679. practice these things.

1680. What did they see in Paul?

1681. They saw a man who was attacked,

1682. who was stripped and who was

1683. beaten with rods, thrown into jail

  1684. in shackles.

1685. And what did he do?

1686. He prayed and he sang hymns to God.

  1687. He went to God.

  1688. He was thankful.

1689. He let his reasonableness be known

  1690. to all.

  1691. Right?

1692. What do you do when hard times come?

1693. And what was the last time you

  1694. were beaten with rods?

  1695. I don't think I've had one of those

  1696. times.

1697. So whatever, however bad I thought it

1698. was, it wasn't as bad as this.

1699. I've never been stripped and attacked,

1700. unjustly thrown into prison and beat

  1701. with rods.

1702. That hasn't happened to me.

1703. And yet I would complain for far less

  1704. things.

1705. Paul went in there and he started

  1706. praying and singing hymns.

  1707. He wasn't anxious.

1708. He modeled this and it affected the

  1709. Philippian church.

  1710. It says,

1711. What you've learned and received and

1712. heard and seen in me,

1713. practice these things and the God of

1714. peace will be with you.

  1715. Okay?

1716. And we should do the same thing in

  1717. parenting.

  1718. Guess what?

1719. If you're anxious, you know what you're

  1720. parenting your children in?

  1721. Anxiety.

1722. Case in point, Abraham and his son,

  1723. Isaac.

  1724. What did Isaac do?

1725. He did the exact same thing.

1726. Did the exact same thing.

1727. Do we realize how anxiety gets passed

  1728. down?

1729. And we all, we know this and we get

  1730. anxious about it.

1731. Have you ever been anxious about

1732. passing anxiety down to your kids?

  1733. We do this sometimes.

1734. Do you know that the God of peace

1735. will guard your hearts and minds in

1736. Christ Jesus in such a way that you

1737. can hand down a lack of anxiety to

1738. your kids, that you can hand down

1739. peace to your kids, that you can hand

1740. down stability to your kids, that you

1741. can hand down a normative model of

1742. life to praise God and pray to God

1743. when things seem to be anxious?

1744. Do you know that you can hand that

  1745. down?

  1746. You can.

  1747. You can.

  1748. It's true.

  1749. And we need to.

1750. But we're going to have to buck the

  1751. order of the day.

1752. The order of the day is anxiety.

  1753. Do you hear me?

1754. This is the order of the day.

  1755. You don't think you're affected by

  1756. it?

  1757. You're a fool.

1758. We're all affected by it.

1759. We're in the water and it's boiling.

1760. Do you understand what I'm saying?

1761. The water around us is anxiety and

  1762. it's getting hotter and it's becoming

  1763. more normative than ever.

1764. And there's this book, this ancient

1765. offensive book called the Bible that

1766. says, don't be anxious about anything.

1767. Don't be anxious about anything.

1768. How dare you say that?

  1769. I didn't.

  1770. The Lord did.

1771. The God of all creation said that.

  1772. Matthew 28, 20 says, behold, I am with

1773. you always to the end of the age.

  1774. Hebrews 13, verse 5 says, I will never

    Hebrews 13:5

1775. leave you or forsake you.

1776. You believe that that God is near you.

  1777. Do you believe that?

1778. When you believe that, you're not

  1779. anxious.

1780. In closing, let me read a few verses on

  1781. anxiety.

1782. Psalm 94, verse 19 says, when the cares

    Psalms 94:19

1783. of my heart are many, your consolations

  1784. cheer my soul.

  1785. Jeremiah 17, 7 through 8 says, blessed is

1786. the man who trusts in the Lord, whose

  1787. trust is the Lord.

1788. He has like a tree planted by water that

1789. sends out its root by the stream and

1790. does not fear when heat comes.

1791. For its leaves remain green and is not

1792. anxious in the year of drought.

1793. For it does not cease to bear fruit.

1794. Picture that for your kids as well.

1795. Your kids, little shoots who do not

1796. fret, who do not get anxious in the

  1797. year of drought.

1798. When things are lacking, when things

1799. aren't the way you want them to be.

1800. Can you believe that even your kids

1801. could be trusting in the Lord and not

  1802. ceasing to bear fruit?

1803. Psalm 127, verse 2, it is vain that you

    Psalms 127:2

1804. rise up early and go late to rest, eating

1805. the bread of anxious toil.

1806. For he gives to his beloved sleep.

1807. Well, yeah, as long as you have the right

1808. amount of magnesium and melatonin and all

  1809. this other stuff.

1810. That's what he meant, right?

1811. Like, that's what I need to do.

1812. I need to take, I need to get every

1813. newfangled way to get better sleep.

1814. I got to make sure I'm getting my cold

1815. plungeants, my sauna use, my everything I

  1816. need to get.

1817. And then he gives his beloved sleep.

  1818. Is that the truth?

1819. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with

  1820. those things.

  1821. There's not.

  1822. Okay?

  1823. You hear that?

1824. There's nothing wrong with those things.

  1825. Okay?

1826. But, there's no, just like there's nothing

1827. wrong with medication in and of itself.

1828. Medication is not a sin.

1829. But, medication is not a remedy for sin.

  1830. Okay?

  1831. It's not.

  1832. It's not a remedy for sin.

  1833. You don't medicate sin.

  1834. You don't medicate sin.

1835. Now, you can medicate certain facts that

1836. sin has had on the body.

1837. But, you will never get over your sin

  1838. because of medication.

1839. You know how you get rid of your sin?

  1840. Repentance.

  1841. Trust in the Lord.

1842. So that in the year of drought,

  1843. you're not anxious.

1844. You're not eating the bread of anxious toil

1845. for he gives his beloved sleep.

1846. Some people need to hear that word alone today.

1847. That he gives his beloved sleep.

  1848. Do you believe that?

1849. Can you receive that truth?

1850. That God gives his beloved sleep?

1851. And that maybe the reason I'm not getting

1852. sleep is because I'm anxious?

1853. That maybe the reason I'm not getting

1854. sleep is because I'm anxious?

1855. Maybe the reason gluten is so hard on my stomach

1856. is because I've been anxious for so long

1857. and it's ruined my stomach?

  1858. Just saying.

  1859. Think about it.

  1860. Luke 12, 24-26.

  1861. Consider the ravens.

1862. They neither sow nor reap.

1863. They have neither storehouse nor barn.

1864. And yet God feeds them.

1865. Of how much more value are you than the birds?

1866. And which of you, by being anxious,

1867. can add a single hour to a span of life?

1868. If you then are not able to do

1869. as small a thing as that,

1870. why are you anxious about the rest?

1871. Why are we anxious about the rest?

  1872. Amen?

  1873. Amen?

  1874. Amen?
