  1. Today will be the second sermon in our series on partnership.

  2. ! The series on partnership will be required listening for anyone who wants to become a

  3. ! partner or member of our church.

  4. When I say partnership, we use the word partnership and membership interchangeably here at Christchurch.

  5. partnership is how we do membership here at Christchurch.

  6. So, how important is partnership or church membership to you?

  7. Does it really matter?

  8. What's your disposition towards partnership?

  9. Are you neutral about partnership or membership?

  10. Are you embarrassed by partnership or membership?

  11. Or are you convinced about partnership or membership?

  12. Conviction is the state of being convinced of the benefit of something.

  13. And we need people who are convinced of the benefit of partnership.

  14. We need partnership enthusiasts.

  15. Those who champion partnership.

  16. We need people who are sold on the idea of partnership.

  17. So, in light of that, I'm going to talk about 10 reasons to be convinced of the importance of church partnership or membership.

  18. So, today's message is why partnership?

  19. Okay?

  20. Number one.

  21. Membership is God's idea.

  22. Membership is God's idea.

  23. 1 Corinthians 12, 27 says,

  24. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

  25. So, that concept of membership, it's not a man-made, made-up thing.

  26. We find this in the scriptures.

  27. In 1 Corinthians 12, you have this whole section about the church being a body.

  28. And because we're a body, that means the body is made up of members.

  29. You are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

  30. The best way for people to be sold on an idea is for that idea to actually be God's idea.

  31. And membership is God's idea.

  32. So, the church being a body with members is God's idea.

  33. That's not a Christ church idea.

  34. The interdependence of each member and each member's effect on one another is God's idea.

  35. That's not a Christ church idea.

  36. Being careful how you build, that's God's idea.

  37. That's not a Christ church idea.

  38. Excluding certain people from the church is God's idea.

  39. That's not a Christ church idea.

  40. Holding people accountable and giving people specific responsibility is God's idea.

  41. That's not a Christ church idea.

  42. Elders, pastors, shepherds, caring for the church, paying careful attention to the flock,

  43. and keeping watch over souls is God's idea.

  44. It's not a Christ church idea.

  45. Church discipline.

  46. You're never going to guess this.

  47. God's idea, right?

  48. It's not a Christ church idea.

  49. Judging the fruit of other believers.

  50. That's God's idea.

  51. That's not a Christ church idea.

  52. Submission to leaders is God's idea.

  53. It's not a Christ church idea.

  54. Refreshing people through people is God's idea.

  55. That's not a Christ church idea.

  56. And the church being a specific kind of people is God's idea.

  57. That's not a Christ church idea.

  58. These are God's ideas taken from God's words.

  59. So the question is, are you proud of those things?

  60. Are you embarrassed or ashamed of those things?

  61. Do we have confidence in the word of God?

  62. Mark chapter 8 verse 38 says, whoever is ashamed of me and of my words.

    Mark 8:38

  63. That's an important thing that it says there.

  64. A lot of people think, oh yeah, I don't ever want to be ashamed of Christ.

  65. Right?

  66. I don't ever want to be ashamed of Jesus and who he is.

  67. But it says, not just that.

  68. Mark 8 38 says, whoever is ashamed of me and my words.

  69. Sometimes people say, well, I'm not ashamed of Jesus.

  70. But we're a little bit embarrassed by the way Jesus talked.

  71. We're a little bit embarrassed by the words he actually used.

  72. And he says, whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation,

  73. of him will the son of man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his father with the holy angels.

  74. 2 Timothy chapter 2 verse 15 says, do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,

    2 Timothy 2:15

  75. a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

  76. So don't be embarrassed or ashamed of a church being committed to the concept of membership.

  77. This is God's idea from God's word.

  78. Okay, so that's the first one.

  79. Number two, why partnership?

  80. We must be able to count on the parts.

  81. We must be able to count on the parts.

  82. 1 Corinthians 12 26 says, if one member suffers, all suffer together.

  83. One member suffers, all suffer together.

  84. Okay, to build anything, you must be able to count on the parts that make up the whole to do their part.

  85. All right.

  86. So to build a good sports team, you must be able to count on all your players to do their part.

  87. To build a sturdy house, you must be able to count on all the materials to do their part.

  88. To build a good business, you must be able to count on all the employees to do their part.

  89. To build a healthy body, you must be able to count on all the members to do their part.

  90. And to build a healthy church, you must be able to count on a specific group of people to do their part.

  91. We have to be able to count on the people to do their part.

  92. 1 Corinthians 12 multiple times talks about that we are part of the body.

  93. And that 1 Corinthians 12, 20 says there are many parts, yet one body.

  94. Romans 12, 4 to 5 says, as in one body we have many members,

  95. and the members do not all have the same function.

  96. So we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually members one of another.

  97. Ephesians 4, 16 in the NIV says,

  98. From him, the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament,

  99. grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work.

  100. So we want the body to be built up.

  101. We want the body to grow and to build itself up in love.

  102. Well, how does that get done according to the Bible?

  103. According to the Bible, the way that gets done is that each part is doing its work.

  104. That's Ephesians 4, 16.

  105. We need a group of people to build with who we can count on to do the work.

  106. Can you be counted on to do the work?

  107. Each part or each partner, or another way you could say it would be part owner,

  108. are the ones we count on to do the work.

  109. A healthy body is one where each part does its work.

  110. In order for the body to be healthy, we have to be able to count on each part.

  111. 2 Corinthians 8, 4 expressed this kind of, I think, the right attitude towards this.

  112. In 2 Corinthians 8, 4, it says that there were people who begged Paul earnestly

  113. for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints.

  114. Begged to Paul earnestly for the favor of taking part.

  115. What is your attitude about taking part?

  116. Being your part.

  117. Are you begging earnestly for it?

  118. Just let me be my part in the body.

  119. Let me do stuff.

  120. Let me give.

  121. Let me give more.

  122. I can't wait to give more.

  123. Are you begging earnestly to do your part?

  124. Well, they were here.

  125. They were here.

  126. Membership is how we effectively mobilize people for mission and discipleship.

  127. The church should obviously be mobilizing people, each part doing its work,

  128. so that mission happens, and so discipleship happens.

  129. And in order to do that, we have to be able to mobilize people to do their part.

  130. One of the hindrances to that is disqualifying yourself or disqualifying others.

  131. We also see in 1 Corinthians 12, you see these two phrases,

  132. I don't belong or you don't belong, right?

  133. And so one of the ways the body can become handicapped is some of us can say,

  134. well, because I'm not so-and-so or so-and-so,

  135. I'm not this part of the body or I'm not that part of the body,

  136. I don't belong, so we can reject ourselves.

  137. And when we reject ourselves and we say, my part isn't important,

  138. that's a problem.

  139. It handicaps the body.

  140. So that's the one way.

  141. The other side is to say, well, actually, my part's really important.

  142. Yours not so much, right?

  143. I belong to the body, but you don't.

  144. You're not, your part isn't important.

  145. So we can either say, I don't belong, or we can say, you don't belong,

  146. but both of them are going to hinder the body to function the way it's supposed to function.

  147. Membership is God's idea for equal care of one another.

  148. 1 Corinthians 12, again, 24-26 says,

  149. God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it,

  150. that there may be no division in the body,

  151. but that the members may have the same care for one another.

  152. If one member suffers, all suffer together.

  153. If one member is honored, all rejoice together.

  154. So don't be embarrassed by requiring each part to do its work.

  155. This is how the body grows and builds itself up in love

  156. and has the same care for one another.

  157. God is not honored by a handicapped body.

  158. Amen?

  159. Okay, number three.

  160. Why partnership?

  161. Because we must be careful how we build.

  162. We must be careful how we build.

  163. If we have to be able to count on the parts that make up the whole to do their part,

  164. then that means that we need to be careful how we build.

  165. Okay?

  166. You know, if you're building a house,

  167. and you kind of need that thing to stay up, right?

  168. You don't want to be laying in your bed and have the ceiling collapse on you.

  169. No one wants that.

  170. So you have to be able to count on the materials that you use

  171. to do what they were meant to do,

  172. to do their part, so to speak.

  173. Okay?

  174. So you're not just picking any old material.

  175. You're picky.

  176. You're careful in how you build,

  177. and you're careful with what you build.

  178. You know, if someone,

  179. you know, if Michael says he's got a contractor that you really got to use,

  180. you're saying,

  181. well, I'm going to find out for sure.

  182. Make sure.

  183. This is my house, you know.

  184. I'm teasing Michael.

  185. Okay?

  186. You don't just want anybody building your house.

  187. You got to make sure that it's the right guy, right?

  188. And then when you get the right guy,

  189. you got to make sure is he using the right materials.

  190. I heard somebody once,

  191. they built their whole deck,

  192. beautiful deck.

  193. They're using treated lumber.

  194. It looked awesome.

  195. It was great.

  196. And when they finished the deck,

  197. they realized that all the nails they used were not galvanized.

  198. Well, if you know anything about how nails work,

  199. and how treated lumber works,

  200. treated lumber is filled with chemicals

  201. that will literally eat those non-galvanized nails up

  202. so that the nails will just disintegrate.

  203. Well, what happens to a deck when all the nails disintegrate

  204. that are holding it together?

  205. It's not going to stay up.

  206. In other words, materials are important.

  207. And this is the same thing with God's church.

  208. You see this in 1 Corinthians 3, 9 to 15.

  209. Okay?

  210. It says,

  211. We are God's fellow workers.

  212. You are God's field, God's building.

  213. According to the grace of God given to me,

  214. like a skilled master builder,

  215. I laid a foundation.

  216. Someone else is building upon it.

  217. And then he says this,

  218. Let each one take care how he builds upon it.

  219. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid,

  220. which is Jesus Christ.

  221. Now, if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver,

  222. precious stones, wood, hay, straw,

  223. each one's work will become manifest,

  224. for the day will disclose it,

  225. because it will be revealed by fire.

  226. And the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.

  227. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives,

  228. he will receive reward.

  229. If anyone's work is burned up,

  230. he will suffer loss,

  231. though he himself will be saved,

  232. but only as through fire.

  233. Are we building with the right materials?

  234. Gold, silver, precious stones?

  235. Or are we building with wood, hay, and stubble?

  236. Why are we so careful how we build?

  237. Why are we so specific in what we require?

  238. Because we want what we build to survive the fire.

  239. We want it to last.

  240. We want to build with gold, silver, and precious stones,

  241. not with wood, hay, and stubble.

  242. We can't just build with anyone in any way.

  243. We need specific expectations on a specific group of people

  244. so that when we build, it's healthy and sustainable.

  245. Don't be embarrassed by being careful how we build.

  246. It's not loving to give someone something that will not last.

  247. Did you hear that?

  248. That's important.

  249. It's not love.

  250. There's no love in giving someone something that's not going to last.

  251. That's not loving.

  252. So don't be embarrassed by that.

  253. Number four.

  254. Why partnership?

  255. Okay?

  256. Because we must exclude people in order to include people.

  257. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

  258. What's that one all about?

  259. Let's take a look.

  260. Okay?

  261. We must exclude people in order to include people.

  262. If we're picky about how we build and who we build with,

  263. then that feels like we're excluding people.

  264. Yes.

  265. But until what?

  266. Exclusion in order to create healthy, loving inclusion.

  267. If we include everyone on their terms,

  268. then we create something that no one desires to be a part of.

  269. And if we only include certain people on God's terms,

  270. then we build something that people desire to be a part of

  271. because what we build builds others up.

  272. I want to say that again.

  273. Okay?

  274. Exclusion in order to create healthy, loving inclusion.

  275. If we include everyone on their terms,

  276. on their terms,

  277. then we create something that no one desires to be a part of.

  278. If we only include certain people on God's terms,

  279. then we build something that people desire to be a part of

  280. because what we build builds others up.

  281. Okay?

  282. I've witnessed a lot of anger over the years

  283. over not accommodating people's different views

  284. so they can feel included.

  285. Especially those who want community without responsibility

  286. or accountability.

  287. Those who want church on their own terms.

  288. I've seen people get all upset about this.

  289. Thinking that they have a right

  290. for us to accommodate all their views and all their terms.

  291. The common mentality is,

  292. I have a right to be welcomed into your community on my terms.

  293. Not understanding that the terms themselves

  294. are what make the community desirable to be welcomed into

  295. in the first place.

  296. Do you hear me on that?

  297. The terms themselves are what make the community desirable

  298. to be welcomed into into the first place.

  299. In our church,

  300. there are things that everyone is invited to

  301. and there are things that some people are not invited to.

  302. It's really important to get over your fear

  303. of explaining to a newcomer that a meeting is exclusive.

  304. There's great value and importance

  305. in certain meetings being exclusive

  306. and it's really good for people to feel

  307. left out of those things.

  308. Where am I getting this from?

  309. Acts chapter 5, 12 to 14.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  310. It says of the early church,

  311. it says they were all together in Solomon's portico.

  312. And then it says,

  313. none of the rest dared join them,

  314. but the people held them in high esteem.

  315. And more than ever,

  316. believers were added to the Lord.

  317. Multitudes of both men and women.

  318. But what's happened now in today's church

  319. is we have it backwards.

  320. Everyone dares to join the church

  321. and not many believers are added to the Lord.

  322. It's backwards.

  323. And our effort to include people

  324. we end up dumbing down what it means to be a part.

  325. And then there's nothing beneficial about being a part,

  326. which creates no incentive to be a part.

  327. We end up working against ourselves

  328. and we have a fear of not including people.

  329. People feeling left out in many ways

  330. is what gives value to being a part.

  331. Because there's something there that is deep

  332. and real and committed.

  333. When you dilute that,

  334. then being a part doesn't mean anything.

  335. Exclusion gives the opportunity to include.

  336. To exclude no one

  337. is to have nothing to include people into.

  338. Letting someone in out of fear

  339. of leaving someone out

  340. dilutes the potency and power

  341. of what you are letting them into,

  342. thereby not really loving them.

  343. To love is to guard the whole

  344. by not letting people in who are diluted.

  345. By protecting the potency of the whole,

  346. we love those who are excluded

  347. because we now have something of value

  348. to offer them

  349. that can change their lives

  350. for their good and God's glory.

  351. Inclusion without regard for dilution

  352. is unloving.

  353. We exclude people for the sake of people.

  354. This is why we can't have partners

  355. just recommending people for partnership

  356. just because he's a nice guy

  357. who brings good food to potluck dinners

  358. or because she's been coming around

  359. for a long time

  360. and everyone likes her.

  361. They have to have fruit of partnership.

  362. So people say,

  363. well, I don't want to make it about a checklist.

  364. And although the fruit of partnership

  365. on the website is not a complete list,

  366. it's most definitely a minimum required list.

  367. Remember that Jesus was exclusive.

  368. In Luke 14, starting verse 25,

  369. it says,

  370. Now great crowds accompanied him

  371. and he turned and said to them,

  372. If anyone comes to me

  373. and does not hate his own father and mother

  374. and wife and children

  375. and brothers and sisters,

  376. yes, and even his own life,

  377. he cannot be my disciple.

  378. Whoever does not bear his own cross

  379. and come after me

  380. cannot be my disciple.

  381. And verse 33 says,

  382. Any of you who does not renounce

  383. all that he has

  384. cannot be my disciple.

  385. Jesus excluded people from discipleship

  386. based on whether or not

  387. they believed these things

  388. and it fleshed out with specific fruit.

  389. So much so that in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  390. in verse 60,

  391. when many of the disciples heard Jesus

  392. and what he had said,

  393. they said this,

  394. This is a hard saying.

  395. Who can listen to it?

  396. After this,

  397. many of his disciples turned back

  398. and no longer walked with him.

  399. One of the problems with the church nowadays

  400. is that many people don't listen

  401. to what the preacher

  402. or the church is saying

  403. and come away saying,

  404. This is a hard saying.

  405. Who can listen to it?

  406. And yet that's what people said about Jesus.

  407. So are we making it easier

  408. for people than Jesus?

  409. Are we lowering the bar

  410. below what Jesus had?

  411. We should not.

  412. And we cannot

  413. if we're disciples of Jesus.

  414. Truly after this,

  415. many of his disciples turned back

  416. and no longer walked with him

  417. because it was hard sayings

  418. that he said.

  419. The early church was exclusive as well.

  420. 2 Corinthians 6, 14 says,

  421. Do not be unequally yoked

  422. with unbelievers.

  423. For what partnership

  424. is righteousness with lawlessness?

  425. Or what fellowship

  426. is light with darkness?

  427. 2 Thessalonians 3, 6 says,

  428. Now we command you, brothers,

  429. in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  430. that you keep away

  431. from any brother

  432. who is walking in idleness

  433. and not in accord

  434. with the tradition

  435. that you receive from us.

  436. Verse 14 says,

  437. If anyone does not obey

  438. what we say in this letter,

  439. please take note of that person

  440. and have nothing to do with him,

  441. that he may be ashamed.

  442. Do not regard him as an enemy,

  443. but warn him as a brother.

  444. Exclusivity.

  445. Titus 3, 10 says,

  446. As a person who stirs up division

  447. after warning him once

  448. and then twice,

  449. have nothing more to do with him.

  450. 1 Corinthians 5, 9-13 says,

  451. I wrote you in my letter

  452. not to associate

  453. with sexually immoral people,

  454. not at all meaning

  455. the sexually immoral of this world

  456. or the greedy and swindlers

  457. or idolaters,

  458. since then you would

  459. need to go out of the world.

  460. But now I'm writing you

  461. not to associate

  462. with anyone

  463. who bears the name of brother

  464. if he is guilty

  465. of sexual immorality or greed

  466. or is an idolater,

  467. reviler,

  468. drunkard,

  469. or swindler,

  470. not even to eat

  471. with such a one.

  472. For what have I to do

  473. with judging outsiders?

  474. Is it not those

  475. inside the church

  476. whom you are to judge?

  477. Wait a second,

  478. I thought we're not

  479. supposed to judge.

  480. He says,

  481. Is it not those

  482. inside the church

  483. whom you are to judge?

  484. God judges those outside,

  485. purge the evil person

  486. from among you.

  487. So we see here

  488. in the scriptures again,

  489. God is telling us

  490. to look at specific fruit

  491. and to exclude certain people.

  492. Romans 16,

    Romans 16:17

  493. verse 17 says,

  494. I appeal to you brothers

  495. to watch out

  496. for those who cause divisions

  497. and create obstacles

  498. contrary to the doctrine

  499. that you have been taught.

  500. Avoid them.

  501. For such persons

  502. do not serve

  503. our Lord Jesus Christ

  504. but their own appetites

  505. and by smooth talk

  506. and flattery

  507. that deceive

  508. the hearts of the naive.

  509. One more verse on this.

  510. 2 Timothy 3,

  511. 1-5.

  512. But understand this,

  513. that in the last days

  514. there will come

  515. times of difficulty.

  516. For people will be

  517. lovers of self,

  518. lovers of money,

  519. proud,

  520. arrogant,

  521. abusive,

  522. disobedient to their parents,

  523. ungrateful,

  524. unholy,

  525. heartless,

  526. unappeasable,

  527. slanderous,

  528. without self-control,

  529. brutal,

  530. not loving good,

  531. treacherous,

  532. reckless,

  533. swollen with conceit,

  534. lovers of pleasure

  535. rather than lovers of God,

  536. having the appearance

  537. of godliness

  538. but denying its power.

  539. Notice,

  540. these are the people

  541. having the appearance

  542. of godliness,

  543. probably people professing

  544. to be Christians,

  545. but denying its power.

  546. What does he say

  547. to do with these people?

  548. Avoid such people.

  549. Avoid such people.

  550. I would say

  551. you don't be embarrassed

  552. to exclude people

  553. who want to join

  554. on their own terms.

  555. The terms themselves

  556. are what make the community

  557. desirable to be welcomed into.

  558. Everything that people

  559. desire to share

  560. and to be a part of

  561. only exists

  562. because we don't just

  563. let anyone be a part.

  564. Number five,

  565. why partnership?

  566. Because there's no community

  567. without responsibility

  568. and accountability.

  569. There's no community

  570. without responsibility

  571. and accountability.

  572. Okay?

  573. So many people say,

  574. oh, I'm looking for community.

  575. I'm looking for community.

  576. Great.

  577. That's awesome.

  578. I think most people

  579. are looking for that.

  580. But do you want

  581. responsibility

  582. and accountability?

  583. Do churches have the right

  584. to require certain things

  585. of their members?

  586. I would say

  587. there's a better question.

  588. The better question would be,

  589. do churches have

  590. the responsibility

  591. to require certain things

  592. from their members?

  593. Again, everyone says

  594. they want community,

  595. but there's no community

  596. without responsibility

  597. and accountability.

  598. Do you say,

  599. I want community?

  600. And my question is typically,

  601. well, do you?

  602. Do you really want community?

  603. You want community.

  604. You don't want community

  605. if you don't want responsibility

  606. and accountability.

  607. You can't have one

  608. without the other.

  609. You can't have one

  610. without the others.

  611. If a church doesn't require

  612. responsibility

  613. and accountability,

  614. then a church doesn't have

  615. any community

  616. to offer people.

  617. And there's no accountability

  618. without judging

  619. people's fruit.

  620. 1 Corinthians 5, 12,

  621. what we read before,

  622. is it not those

  623. inside the church

  624. whom you are to judge?

  625. Matthew 12, 33 says,

  626. a tree is known

  627. by its fruit.

  628. John 15, verse 8 says,

    John 15:8

  629. by this my Father

  630. is glorified,

  631. that you bear much fruit

  632. and so prove yourselves

  633. to be my disciples.

  634. Fruit proves discipleship.

  635. Never be embarrassed

  636. or feel the need

  637. to apologize

  638. for requiring responsibility

  639. and accountability

  640. to people looking

  641. for community.

  642. There's no other way

  643. to give it to them.

  644. There's no other way

  645. to give it to them.

  646. Number six,

  647. why partnership?

  648. For care,

  649. careful attention,

  650. keeping watch,

  651. and building up.

  652. Church leaders

  653. have the right

  654. and the responsibility

  655. to require certain things

  656. from their members

  657. in order to

  658. pay careful attention

  659. to all the flock

  660. and to care

  661. for the church of God.

  662. This is Acts 20, 28.

  663. Okay?

  664. People want

  665. to be cared for.

  666. They want careful attention.

  667. They want to be cared for

  668. in the church of God.

  669. Then church leaders

  670. have the right responsibility

  671. to require certain things

  672. from their members

  673. so that this can be done.

  674. Okay?

  675. And so that they can

  676. keep watch over their souls.

  677. Hebrews 13, 13, 17.

  678. The Bible goes on to say,

  679. let them do this with joy

  680. and not with groaning,

  681. for that would be

  682. of no advantage to you.

  683. So making it difficult

  684. for elders to do this

  685. is of no advantage.

  686. Making it so that

  687. there's no joy in it.

  688. So in order for there

  689. to be joy in it,

  690. there has to be

  691. some level of organization.

  692. There has to be

  693. some means and way

  694. for shepherds

  695. to be able to

  696. shepherd the flock.

  697. And having a group

  698. of people we can count on

  699. to do their part

  700. is also the best way

  701. to care for all the parts.

  702. Okay?

  703. If we have a body

  704. that's not healthy,

  705. then we know

  706. that there's not going

  707. to be parts,

  708. we know there's going

  709. to be parts

  710. that aren't cared for.

  711. And that's not okay.

  712. Membership lets the elders

  713. know who they are

  714. responsible for

  715. and lets the members

  716. know who they are

  717. responsible to.

  718. Membership is an

  719. official recognition

  720. of the elders'

  721. responsibility

  722. to keep watch

  723. over a member's soul

  724. as those who will

  725. have to give an account,

  726. an official recognition

  727. of a member's responsibility

  728. to obey and submit

  729. to the elders' authority

  730. for building them up.

  731. St. Corinthians 10,

  732. verse 8 says,

  733. the reason that

  734. authority is given

  735. is to build up.

  736. A lot of people

  737. will talk about

  738. abuse of authority,

  739. which is definitely

  740. something that happens.

  741. But very rarely

  742. do people talk about

  743. underuse of authority.

  744. And if authority

  745. is given for the

  746. building up of the body,

  747. to not use that authority

  748. is to forfeit

  749. the grace that God

  750. has given to build up.

  751. And that is also

  752. a travesty.

  753. Of course people

  754. shouldn't abuse authority.

  755. That's wrong.

  756. That's not how

  757. authority should be used.

  758. But sometimes

  759. in an effort

  760. or because of a

  761. trigger reaction

  762. to abuse of authority,

  763. we recoil at all authority

  764. when authority

  765. is a gift given by God

  766. to build up

  767. his church.

  768. So authority

  769. must be used.

  770. Authority must be used.

  771. It's used to give up.

  772. And we

  773. are against abuse,

  774. but we're also

  775. against underuse.

  776. Our partners

  777. are the ones

  778. whom elders

  779. are accountable

  780. for leading

  781. and who in return

  782. are accountable

  783. to elders

  784. for growing

  785. and participating

  786. in the mission

  787. of God.

  788. So don't be embarrassed

  789. by your leaders

  790. using their

  791. God-given authority

  792. and requiring

  793. a lot from people.

  794. That's what the Bible

  795. calls caring for people.

  796. The kind of leadership

  797. you should be embarrassed

  798. by and apologize for

  799. is the kind of leadership

  800. that doesn't require

  801. what God requires

  802. of them

  803. because that's a leadership

  804. that doesn't care.

  805. That's a leadership

  806. that doesn't pay

  807. careful attention.

  808. And that's a leadership

  809. that isn't keeping

  810. watch over your soul.

  811. And that's not the right

  812. kind of leadership.

  813. Number seven,

  814. why partnership?

  815. To be refreshed.

  816. To be refreshed.

  817. Bilemon 4-7

  818. says,

  819. I thank my God

  820. always when I remember

  821. you in my prayers

  822. because I hear

  823. of your love

  824. and of the faith

  825. that you have

  826. toward the Lord Jesus

  827. and for all the saints.

  828. And I pray

  829. that the sharing

  830. of your faith

  831. may become effective

  832. for the full knowledge

  833. of every good thing

  834. that is in us

  835. for the sake of Christ.

  836. For I have derived

  837. much joy

  838. and comfort

  839. from your love,

  840. my brother,

  841. because the hearts

  842. of the saints

  843. have been refreshed

  844. through you.

  845. Okay?

  846. So I have derived

  847. much joy

  848. and comfort

  849. from your love,

  850. my brother,

  851. because the hearts

  852. of the saints

  853. have been refreshed

  854. through you.

  855. He says,

  856. he thanks God

  857. whenever he even

  858. thinks of them.

  859. Okay?

  860. What does it mean

  861. to be refreshed?

  862. What's the definition

  863. of refresh?

  864. Synonyms of refresh

  865. are restore,

  866. strengthen,

  867. revive,

  868. replenish,

  869. reinvigorate.

  870. When's the last time

  871. you thought of being

  872. with the saints

  873. doing those things?

  874. Okay?

  875. The antonym of refresh

  876. is exhaust,

  877. tire,

  878. drain,

  879. deplete,

  880. weary,

  881. wear out,

  882. burden.

  883. Okay?

  884. A while ago,

  885. I heard of a pregnant woman

  886. who said to someone

  887. that she really wanted

  888. to go to the monthly

  889. partners meeting

  890. because she knew

  891. at the time

  892. that she'd be missing

  893. church gatherings

  894. soon after she gives birth

  895. and she loves to worship

  896. and be with God's people.

  897. But a lot of times

  898. I've also heard

  899. people say

  900. things quite different

  901. from this pregnant woman.

  902. They might say

  903. something like,

  904. I'm staying home

  905. because I have

  906. so much going on

  907. or

  908. I'm staying home

  909. because I'm exhausted,

  910. tired,

  911. drained,

  912. depleted,

  913. weary,

  914. worn out,

  915. or burdened,

  916. which is all the antonyms

  917. of refreshed.

  918. People say,

  919. that's why I'm staying home.

  920. I'm not going to

  921. gather with the saints

  922. because I'm exhausted,

  923. I'm tired,

  924. I'm drained,

  925. I'm depleted,

  926. I'm weary,

  927. I'm worn out,

  928. I'm burdened.

  929. Basically,

  930. I'm staying home

  931. because I'm not refreshed,

  932. right?

  933. Is that fair?

  934. I'm staying home

  935. because I'm not refreshed.

  936. But let me just say,

  937. this is important.

  938. If you're doing that,

  939. you're skipping the wrong thing

  940. and you have a fundamental

  941. misunderstanding

  942. of the church.

  943. Okay?

  944. Remember,

  945. Philemon 7 said,

  946. I have derived much joy

  947. and comfort from your love,

  948. my brother,

  949. because the hearts of the saints

  950. have been refreshed

  951. through you.

  952. Do you have a view

  953. of the church

  954. that when you're tired

  955. and weary

  956. and broken

  957. is actually

  958. you're refreshing?

  959. There's a worldly experience

  960. of church

  961. that attends gatherings

  962. and meetings

  963. out of a religious obligation

  964. and deserts them

  965. whenever needing refreshment.

  966. And there's an experience

  967. of church

  968. that does its best

  969. to come together often

  970. out of longing

  971. to be with one another

  972. so that they might be refreshed.

  973. Which is the version

  974. of church that you see?

  975. Do you see it

  976. as some religious obligation

  977. that when you're tired

  978. and weary

  979. you avoid?

  980. Or do you see it

  981. as something

  982. that is a people

  983. that you long for

  984. to be with

  985. so you can be refreshed?

  986. This is the biblical view.

  987. Philippians 4.1

  988. says,

  989. My brothers

  990. whom I love

  991. and long for

  992. my joy and crown

  993. stand firm thus

  994. in the Lord

  995. my beloved.

  996. You know,

  997. you're never going to be refreshed

  998. by people

  999. that you don't love

  1000. and long for.

  1001. But when you do

1002. love and long for people

  1003. it's refreshing

  1004. to see them.

  1005. And if you've never

  1006. experienced church

  1007. in such a way

1008. that when you see people

  1009. you feel filled up.

  1010. You feel

  1011. ah,

1012. it's good to see you.

  1013. I miss you.

  1014. Seeing you

  1015. gets me excited.

  1016. Seeing you

  1017. makes me feel

  1018. rest.

  1019. Seeing you

  1020. being with you

  1021. singing with you

  1022. worshipping with you

  1023. is a relief.

  1024. It's a joy.

  1025. Some of you

  1026. maybe have never

  1027. known church that way

  1028. but I know

  1029. from experience

  1030. there is church

  1031. that way.

  1032. There is church

  1033. that way.

  1034. And in my experience

  1035. some of the most

  1036. refreshing thing

  1037. I've ever experienced

  1038. Christ

  1039. is the body

  1040. of Christ.

  1041. And at my lowest

  1042. times

  1043. my most weary

  1044. and discouraged

  1045. times

  1046. the people of God

  1047. putting on

  1048. the character

  1049. of Christ

  1050. have been

  1051. my most

  1052. greatest refreshment.

  1053. And if you

  1054. have never

  1055. experienced that

  1056. my hope

  1057. and my longing

  1058. is that you would

  1059. because this is

  1060. the way God

  1061. meant the church

  1062. to be.

  1063. Not just a

  1064. series of religious

  1065. obligations

  1066. that you avoid

  1067. when you're tired

  1068. but actually

  1069. a group of people

  1070. that are your

  1071. refreshment.

  1072. When you think

  1073. of refreshments

  1074. what do you think?

  1075. That's another word

  1076. for a drink, right?

  1077. You take a drink

  1078. to refresh yourself.

  1079. I would hope

  1080. the church

  1081. would become that

  1082. to one another.

  1083. Hebrews 10

  1084. 24-25

  1085. says

  1086. Let us consider

  1087. how to stir up

  1088. one another

1089. to love and good works

  1090. not neglecting

  1091. to meet together

  1092. as is the habit

  1093. of some

  1094. but encouraging

  1095. one another

  1096. and all the more

  1097. as you see

  1098. the day approaching.

  1099. Okay?

  1100. So that's what

  1101. it's to be a group

  1102. of people

  1103. that are encouraging

  1104. one another

  1105. which is why

  1106. it's so important

  1107. that the church

  1108. isn't just a group

  1109. of people

  1110. who are gathered

  1111. on their own terms

  1112. because if everybody

  1113. is looking for

  1114. their own terms

  1115. and their own desires

  1116. and their own

  1117. what I want

  1118. then no one

  1119. gets blessed

  1120. and no one

  1121. gets refreshed.

  1122. That's a great way

  1123. to build a church

  1124. in so much so

  1125. that it doesn't

  1126. refresh anybody.

  1127. And some of us

  1128. experience church

  1129. like that.

  1130. It's about as lame

  1131. as lame can be

  1132. and I have zero

  1133. interest in it

  1134. and I know you

  1135. do too.

  1136. So let's build

  1137. a church that

  1138. refreshes.

  1139. Well, we believe

  1140. we do that

  1141. through partnership.

  1142. Don't be embarrassed

  1143. by requiring people

  1144. to meet together.

  1145. Don't be embarrassed

  1146. by what God

  1147. designed to truly

  1148. refresh one another.

  1149. Number eight.

  1150. Got three more here.

  1151. Number eight.

  1152. Why partnership?

  1153. Okay?

  1154. Because the people

  1155. are the attraction.

  1156. The people

  1157. are the attraction.

  1158. Some of you

  1159. have come from

  1160. or are used to

  1161. or have only known

  1162. a form of church

  1163. where essentially

  1164. products and services

  1165. are the main

  1166. attraction for the church.

  1167. What I oftentimes

  1168. call the holy trinity

  1169. of church planting.

  1170. Right?

  1171. The worship,

  1172. the child care,

  1173. and the charismatic

  1174. preacher.

  1175. Right?

  1176. And so,

  1177. it's like,

  1178. what draws people

  1179. to the church?

  1180. Well,

  1181. it's because,

  1182. man,

  1183. that preacher,

  1184. he's a charismatic guy.

1185. He knows how to really speak.

  1186. He's a great speaker.

  1187. That worship team

  1188. is incredible.

  1189. They're talented.

  1190. They're a well-oiled machine.

  1191. And man,

  1192. have you been to

  1193. the child care ministry?

  1194. It's amazing.

  1195. The kids love it.

  1196. It's over the top.

  1197. And that's what's

  1198. drawing people.

  1199. And so,

  1200. basically,

  1201. it's products and services

  1202. that are consumed

  1203. by the masses.

  1204. All right?

  1205. But,

  1206. that's not what

  1207. we're going after.

  1208. We're not going after

  1209. products and services

  1210. provided by a few.

  1211. We're actually going after

  1212. a demonstration

  1213. of the kingdom,

1214. the king and the kingdom

  1215. by all.

  1216. Okay?

1217. Let me say that again.

  1218. We're not looking for

  1219. products and services

  1220. provided by a few.

  1221. We're looking for

  1222. a demonstration

  1223. of the king

  1224. and the kingdom

  1225. provided by all.

  1226. That's what the church

  1227. should be.

  1228. Okay?

  1229. That's why we need

  1230. partnership.

  1231. Because without partnership,

1232. you have a few people

  1233. doing all the work.

  1234. And instead of participants,

  1235. you have consumers.

  1236. A bunch of people

  1237. coming to get,

1238. rather than a bunch of people

  1239. coming to give.

  1240. Which is why we,

  1241. at Bella Costa,

  1242. sending church

  1243. that sent us out,

  1244. we used to call

  1245. membership just membership.

  1246. And we realized that

  1247. everyone's view of membership

  1248. nowadays in our

  1249. Costco gym membership

  1250. culture just says

  1251. you get a membership

  1252. and it's like,

  1253. hey,

1254. what do I get now?

  1255. What do I get?

  1256. And we're like,

  1257. no,

  1258. that's not what

1259. we're trying to do here.

1260. And so we started using

  1261. a different biblical word,

  1262. partnership,

  1263. to describe our membership

  1264. because that's really

  1265. what the Bible

  1266. is teaching when it's

  1267. talking about membership.

  1268. And that's what we're

  1269. trying to get across.

1270. That actually when you come

  1271. and become a partner

1272. or a member of our church,

  1273. we're saying,

  1274. hey,

  1275. what can I give?

1276. How can I lock arms?

  1277. How can I become

  1278. a part owner

1279. in what's going on here

  1280. and provide value

  1281. for people?

1282. And that in and of itself

  1283. becomes the thing

  1284. that attracts.

  1285. We hope to build

  1286. a church

  1287. where

  1288. the people

  1289. are the attraction

  1290. because everyone's

  1291. participating.

  1292. quality.

  1293. It's quality,

  1294. you know,

1295. and the old kind of way

  1296. of thinking about it,

  1297. it's the quality

  1298. of the service

  1299. versus the quality

  1300. of the people.

1301. At the end of the day,

  1302. we want to have

  1303. good quality services

  1304. on Sunday mornings

  1305. and whenever we gather.

  1306. But, you know,

  1307. sometimes some aren't

1308. maybe as good as others,

1309. but at the end of the day,

1310. we can always fall back

  1311. on the people.

1312. We can always fall back

  1313. on the people.

  1314. If your service sucks

  1315. and your people suck,

  1316. well,

1317. then you're in big trouble.

  1318. Right?

  1319. Right?

  1320. So, but hopefully

  1321. you're not just relying

  1322. on the service

  1323. because the service

  1324. can go bad.

  1325. But with people,

  1326. if Jesus actually lives

1327. in a group of people

1328. and those group of people

1329. are connected to one another

  1330. in the right way,

  1331. we should benefit

1332. and we should be blessed

1333. by the people of God.

  1334. Okay?

  1335. It's also the difference

  1336. between just meeting-centric

  1337. Christianity

  1338. versus all of life

  1339. where the meetings

  1340. are what attract people

  1341. rather than just

  1342. people in the everyday

  1343. stuff of life

  1344. around dining room tables

  1345. and living room couches

1346. and that kind of thing

  1347. and backyards

  1348. and front yard porches.

  1349. It's the difference

  1350. between gifting and character

  1351. where gifting is what

  1352. draws people

  1353. rather than character

  1354. and make no mistake,

1355. what you build with your gift,

  1356. you can destroy

  1357. with your character.

  1358. And many of us

  1359. have seen that.

  1360. We've experienced that.

1361. We don't want to draw people

  1362. with our giftings.

1363. We want to draw people

1364. with the character of Jesus.

  1365. And so,

  1366. we don't want a couple

  1367. charismatic superstars

  1368. to win everybody

  1369. to our church.

  1370. We want the person

  1371. of Jesus,

  1372. Jesus himself,

  1373. manifested in the body

  1374. of Christ

  1375. to be the one

  1376. that draws people.

1377. I was drawn to Jesus

  1378. in a people.

  1379. That's what we want

  1380. people to say.

  1381. And this really,

  1382. when done this way,

  1383. you avoid hypocrisy

  1384. because if you have

  1385. products and services

  1386. disconnected from character,

1387. you very much open yourself

  1388. up to hypocrisy

  1389. versus the character

  1390. and community

  1391. of a people,

  1392. if it's the character

  1393. and community

  1394. of the people

1395. that are the drawing point,

  1396. then there's no room

  1397. for hypocrisy

  1398. because either God

  1399. or you don't.

  1400. Whereas if you're

  1401. trying to draw people

  1402. with products and services

  1403. disconnected from character,

  1404. you can have the

  1405. dog and pony show

  1406. pull off

  1407. and not have character

1408. and you can draw people

  1409. and then disillusion them

  1410. with the fact

  1411. that there's no character

  1412. behind your good production.

  1413. And that's dangerous.

1414. And then when you go

  1415. church shopping,

1416. you can shop for products

  1417. and services

  1418. or you can shop

1419. for a people to partner with.

  1420. And that's what we're after.

1421. We want anyone who's here

  1422. who's not a partner,

  1423. we're saying,

1424. don't just shop for products

  1425. and services.

1426. And at the end of the day,

  1427. we can't compete

  1428. with products and services.

  1429. There's way better churches

  1430. with better products.

  1431. But I would hope

  1432. that where we can,

1433. where we do have something

  1434. to offer,

  1435. is that there's

  1436. a quality people

  1437. and there's a people

1438. that you can partner with.

  1439. And that's the goal.

  1440. One is volunteers

  1441. on your terms.

  1442. The other is disciples

  1443. on God's terms.

  1444. Okay?

  1445. John 13, 35 says,

  1446. by this all people

  1447. will know

1448. that you are my disciples

  1449. if you're in love

  1450. for one another.

  1451. Right?

1452. We'll know they are Christians

  1453. by their love.

  1454. We want people

  1455. to be attracted

  1456. to our church

  1457. because of the love

1458. we have for one another.

1459. Well, you can't do that

  1460. apart from partnership.

1461. There has to be commitment

  1462. to one another

  1463. in order for there

  1464. to be love

  1465. for one another.

  1466. So don't be embarrassed

  1467. by a church

  1468. that values character

  1469. over gifting,

  1470. that aims to attract

  1471. people to Jesus

1472. rather than to a few

  1473. charismatic superstars.

  1474. Okay?

  1475. Number nine,

  1476. why partnership?

  1477. Church discipline.

  1478. Church discipline.

  1479. Matthew 18, 15-17

  1480. says,

  1481. if your brother

  1482. sins against you,

1483. go tell him his fault

1484. between you and him alone.

1485. When if he listens to you,

1486. you have gained your brother.

1487. But if he does not listen,

1488. take one or two others

  1489. along with you,

  1490. that every charge

  1491. may be established

  1492. by the evidence

1493. of two or three witnesses.

1494. If he refuses to listen

  1495. to them,

1496. tell it to the church.

  1497. And if he refuses

1498. to listen even to the church,

1499. let him be to you

  1500. as a Gentile

  1501. and a tax collector.

1502. So this is in the Scriptures.

  1503. This is church discipline.

1504. We believe in church discipline.

  1505. We exercise church discipline.

1506. But there's no church discipline

  1507. of excluding someone

  1508. from your church

  1509. because of the fact

  1510. that they're not willing

  1511. to repent of sin

  1512. if there's nothing

  1513. that you've ever

  1514. included them into.

  1515. And there's something

  1516. about that

  1517. that causes someone

  1518. to be shaken

  1519. and it's ultimately

  1520. unto restoration.

1521. We don't do church discipline

1522. to put a scarlet letter

  1523. on someone.

1524. Every step of church discipline

  1525. from the first confrontation

  1526. to the two people

  1527. confronting

  1528. to the telling it

  1529. to the church,

  1530. which is an all-hands-on-deck,

  1531. everybody love

  1532. and reach out

  1533. to this person,

  1534. to even excommunicating

  1535. a person

  1536. is all ultimately

  1537. unto restoration,

  1538. that their soul

  1539. might be saved.

1540. Every step of the way.

  1541. It's not an,

  1542. it's not,

  1543. it's exclusion

1544. for the sake of love

  1545. in the end,

  1546. for restoration,

1547. for them to see their need.

  1548. It's turning them over

  1549. to Satan

  1550. so that their soul

  1551. might be saved.

  1552. So that their soul

  1553. might be saved.

  1554. That's the goal.

  1555. That's the goal.

  1556. All of the goal

  1557. of church discipline

  1558. is that.

  1559. Partnership

  1560. allows that

  1561. to be executed.

  1562. James 5, 19-20

  1563. says,

  1564. My brothers,

  1565. if anyone among you

  1566. wanders from the truth

1567. and someone brings them back,

  1568. let them know that.

  1569. Whoever brings back

1570. a sinner from his wandering

  1571. will save his soul

  1572. from death

  1573. and will cover

  1574. a multitude of sins.

  1575. And that's what

  1576. we want to do.

  1577. Don't ever be embarrassed

  1578. by a church

  1579. that loves people

  1580. enough to discipline them.

  1581. A church that doesn't

  1582. hate sin

  1583. and its power

  1584. to damn and destroy

  1585. enough to discipline people

  1586. is a church

  1587. that doesn't really

  1588. love people.

  1589. Never apologize

  1590. for loving people

  1591. the way God

  1592. says to love.

  1593. Number 10.

  1594. Why partnership?

  1595. Last one.

  1596. The indispensability

  1597. of unity.

  1598. The indispensability

  1599. of unity.

  1600. 1 Corinthians 1, 10

  1601. says,

  1602. I appeal to you,

  1603. brothers,

  1604. by the name

1605. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1606. that all of you

  1607. agree

1608. and that there may be

  1609. no divisions among you

1610. and that you may be

1611. united in the same mind

  1612. and the same judgment.

  1613. That's some pretty

  1614. inclusive language there

  1615. as far as like,

  1616. hey,

1617. we've got to be together,

  1618. right?

  1619. All of you agree,

  1620. no divisions among you

  1621. and be united

  1622. in the same mind

  1623. and the same judgment.

1624. This is why we do partnership

  1625. to help foster that,

  1626. to help build that.

  1627. Amos 3, 3

1628. in the New King James

  1629. says,

  1630. can two walk together

  1631. unless they're agreed?

  1632. It's a rhetorical question.

  1633. No, they can't.

  1634. You can't walk together

  1635. unless you're agreed.

  1636. Partnership is saying,

1637. hey, we agree on these

  1638. specific things

1639. so we can walk together.

  1640. Mark 3, 25 says,

1641. if a house is divided

  1642. against itself,

  1643. that house will not

  1644. be able to stand.

  1645. Okay?

  1646. A house divided

  1647. against itself

  1648. cannot stand.

  1649. It's not just agreement

  1650. in word,

  1651. but it's agreement

  1652. in action.

  1653. Okay?

  1654. So,

  1655. if we have different

  1656. priorities,

  1657. then we can't partner.

1658. If you treasure one thing

  1659. and I treasure another,

  1660. then our hearts

  1661. will be going

  1662. in different directions.

  1663. Matthew 6, 21,

  1664. where your treasure is,

  1665. there your heart

  1666. will be also.

  1667. So,

  1668. if we don't treasure

  1669. the same things,

  1670. if we don't have

  1671. the same priorities,

  1672. then we'll be going

  1673. in different directions.

  1674. Partnership is shared

  1675. priorities.

  1676. All right?

  1677. And if we have

  1678. different visions

  1679. of how our priorities

  1680. flesh out,

  1681. then we also can't

  1682. partner with one another

  1683. because we have

  1684. two visions

  1685. or die vision.

  1686. Die means two.

  1687. And a house divided

  1688. can't stand.

  1689. Partnership is

  1690. shared vision.

  1691. Saying we have

  1692. the same priorities

  1693. and we have

  1694. the same vision

  1695. of how those priorities

  1696. should be fleshed out.

  1697. And it's based on

  1698. 1 Corinthians 15, 58.

  1699. Always give yourselves

  1700. fully to the work

  1701. of the Lord.

1702. So we have a vision

1703. of it being fleshed out

  1704. always fully

  1705. in all of life.

  1706. Okay?

  1707. And then lastly,

1708. if we have the same

  1709. priorities and the same

  1710. vision

  1711. of how those priorities

  1712. flesh out,

  1713. but we don't share

  1714. responsibility,

  1715. then we can't truly

  1716. partner with one another.

1717. If one of us thinks

  1718. that we don't belong

1719. or that we don't need

  1720. each other,

  1721. then we can't partner

  1722. because we're alone

  1723. and partnership

  1724. is together.

  1725. Partnership is

  1726. shared responsibility.

  1727. It's not just a few

  1728. people doing the work.

  1729. It's everybody doing

  1730. the work and doing

  1731. their part.

  1732. Never be embarrassed

  1733. to require unity.

  1734. It's never loving

  1735. to offer people

  1736. a house that will

  1737. not stand.

  1738. It's never loving

  1739. to offer people

  1740. a house that will

  1741. not stand.

  1742. And if you've ever

  1743. been a part of a

  1744. church split,

  1745. you really know this

  1746. one.

  1747. I have.

  1748. Trust me,

  1749. I don't ever want

  1750. to give someone

  1751. a church that's

  1752. going to split.

  1753. Now,

  1754. no one has control

  1755. over that completely,

  1756. but being in unity

  1757. is a good helper

  1758. for that, right?

  1759. Being in unity

  1760. is a good helper

  1761. for that.

  1762. So,

  1763. it's never loving

  1764. to offer people

  1765. a house that's

  1766. destined to fall,

  1767. that's destined

  1768. to not stand.

  1769. So,

  1770. let's be unified
