  1. Today's sermon is the first of four sermons in a series called Gospel Training.

  2. ! This series is mandatory listening for anyone who wants to become a partner.

  3. ! Why four sermons on the gospel to become a partner in our church?

  4. If we don't agree on the gospel, then we're not going to agree on anything else.

  5. The gospel is ground zero when it comes to importance and what we want to base everything on.

  6. And so Philippians 1 verse 5 says, Paul thanks God for the Philippians' partnership in the gospel.

    Philippians 1:5

  7. And so really at the core, our partnership together is partnership in the gospel.

  8. So if we don't agree on the gospel, it's hard to go from there.

  9. So today's sermon is going to be called The Gospel.

  10. The Gospel.

  11. The word gospel means good news.

  12. What is the gospel? Romans 1.16 is a quintessential verse on this.

  13. This is the verse that Martin Luther was wrecked by.

  14. Romans 1.16 says,

  15. I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

  16. So three things there.

  17. I'm not ashamed of the gospel.

  18. Four.

  19. What is it?

  20. It is the power of God.

  21. A lot of times people pray, well, I pray that the gospel would be powerful.

  22. I pray that my presentation of the gospel would be powerful.

  23. The gospel is power.

  24. You can't make it powerful.

  25. It is powerful.

  26. It is power in and of itself.

  27. That's reassuring to know that the very message we preach is power in and of itself.

  28. And what is this power for?

  29. It's for salvation.

  30. It's the power that is inherent in the gospel message is to save people.

  31. Okay?

  32. Who?

  33. To everyone who believes.

  34. It's the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

  35. So everyone who believes.

  36. Anyone who believes receives this power.

  37. And it's like no other power.

  38. Since this sermon will predominantly be heard by professing believers, let's make sure that as we listen to this, we're doing 2 Corinthians 13, verse 5, which says,

    2 Corinthians 13:5

  39. Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.

  40. Test yourselves.

  41. For do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?

  42. Unless indeed you fail and meet the test.

  43. So let's listen that way.

  44. Let's make sure that we're listening with those kind of ears.

  45. Where do we begin?

  46. We begin with God.

  47. We begin with God.

  48. God is holy.

  49. God is holy.

  50. God being holy is bad news for the sinner.

  51. Do you believe that?

  52. God being holy is bad news for the sinner.

  53. God is holy and the sinner is not.

  54. This is of utmost importance.

  55. The fact that God is holy, totally other, completely other than us, the fact that God is holy is bad news for the sinner.

  56. I want to look at two main points in regards to the bad news.

  57. First one, people must see themselves as sinners.

  58. People must see themselves as sinners.

  59. Luke chapter 5, 31 to 32.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  60. Jesus answered them,

  61. Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

  62. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  63. All right?

  64. The gospel is of no use to a person who doesn't first see himself as a sinner.

  65. The gospel is for sinners.

  66. In your preaching of the gospel, be careful that you're not answering questions that people aren't asking.

  67. This happens all the time.

  68. All right?

  69. Hey, Jesus died for you.

  70. So what?

  71. Why is that even relevant to me?

  72. Why does that matter?

  73. Okay?

  74. If someone doesn't realize that they're a sinner and you say,

  75. Jesus died for you, you're like,

  76. So?

  77. What's the point?

  78. Like, what relevance does that have to me?

  79. They first have to see they're a sinner.

  80. You might say, well, everybody sees that.

  81. Au contraire, mon frere.

  82. They do not all see that.

  83. Okay?

  84. There are many people who do not see themselves as sinners,

  85. especially nowadays.

  86. Especially nowadays.

  87. If a person doesn't know the bad news,

  88. then the good news isn't good,

  89. and the good news isn't relevant.

  90. They have to first know that they're a sinner and that they need God.

  91. Romans 3, 10-12, and verse 23.

  92. As it is written,

  93. None is righteous.

  94. No, not one.

  95. No one understands.

  96. No one seeks for God.

  97. All have turned aside.

  98. Together they have become worthless.

  99. No one does good.

  100. Not even one.

  101. All have sinned.

  102. Verse 23.

  103. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  104. All.

  105. Everyone.

  106. There's not even one.

  107. Every single person has sinned.

  108. This is key.

  109. This is important.

  110. It has to start here.

  111. There is no one righteous.

  112. Not even one.

  113. That means everyone.

  114. Everyone is in need.

  115. Everyone is in need.

  116. And essentially, everyone is a lawbreaker.

  117. 1 John 3, verse 4 in the NIV says,

    1 John 3:4

  118. Everyone who sins breaks the law.

  119. In fact, sin is lawlessness.

  120. Everyone who sins breaks the law.

  121. Anyone who sinned, which is everyone,

  122. because all have sinned,

  123. have broken God's law.

  124. Who is God?

  125. God is holy.

  126. When you break the law of a holy God,

  127. that is a big deal.

  128. That is a big deal.

  129. Again, that's why we're saying God being holy is bad news for the sinner.

  130. The fact that we broke the law of a holy God is about the worst news we could hear.

  131. 1 Timothy 1, 8 through 11 says,

  132. We know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully.

  133. Understanding this,

  134. That the law is not laid down for the just,

  135. but for the lawless and disobedient,

  136. for the ungodly and sinners.

  137. Everyone, right?

  138. For the unholy and profane.

  139. For those who strike their fathers and mothers.

  140. For murderers, the sexually immoral.

  141. Men who practice homosexuality.

  142. Enslavers, liars, perjurers,

  143. and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine.

  144. In accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God,

  145. with which I have been entrusted.

  146. Okay, this is in accordance with the gospel.

  147. That we broke God's law.

  148. Romans 3, 19 to 20 says,

  149. We know that whatever the law says,

  150. it speaks to those who are under the law,

  151. so that every mouth may be stopped.

  152. And the whole world may be held accountable to God.

  153. For by works of the law,

  154. no human being will be justified in his sight,

  155. since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

  156. So the law is necessary to know what is sin.

  157. Okay, because the law had said,

  158. do not sin, that's how we know.

  159. Romans 7, 7 says,

  160. If it had not been for the law,

  161. I would not have known sin.

  162. I would not have known what it is to covet

  163. if the law had not sinned.

  164. You shall not covet.

  165. And the question that a lot of people would ask is,

  166. well, but what if I keep most of it?

  167. Right?

  168. I mean, come on.

  169. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  170. Nobody's perfect.

  171. I get it.

  172. But what if I keep most of it?

  173. What if I'm better than somebody else?

  174. James 2, 10 says,

  175. Whoever keeps the whole law,

  176. but fails in one point,

  177. has become guilty of breaking out all of it.

  178. So even if you've done a pretty decent job

  179. of obeying most of it,

  180. if you've broken it in one place,

  181. you've broken all of it.

  182. That's what the Bible says.

  183. So not only does it say that all have sinned

  184. and all have broken his law,

  185. it says even if you've obeyed most of it

  186. and you broke it at least one point,

  187. you have become guilty of all of it.

  188. You've become guilty of all of it.

  189. So this flies in the face of our unrighteousness

  190. and our self-righteousness.

  191. People say, well, unrighteousness is bad,

  192. but self-righteousness is good.

  193. We need good people.

  194. No.

  195. Self-righteousness and unrighteousness

  196. are two sides of the same coin.

  197. Sin, wickedness, evil.

  198. You might even say that self-righteousness,

  199. in one sense, is in one sense more arrogant

  200. because it's actually saying,

  201. I can do enough to be justified.

  202. I can do enough to win God's favor.

  203. The arrogance of self-righteousness

  204. is an affront to God

  205. in so much as the rebellion of unrighteousness

  206. is an affront to God.

  207. They're both an affront to God.

  208. In fact, Isaiah 64 verse 6 says,

    Isaiah 64:6

  209. we have become like one who is unclean

  210. and all our righteous deeds

  211. are like a polluted garment.

  212. Like a polluted garment.

  213. This kind of polluted garment

  214. that it's talking about

  215. would be like a menstrual pad.

  216. One time I was living in Midtown.

  217. I was going down to take out the garbage

  218. or something.

  219. I can't remember.

  220. I came into the driveway

  221. and as is normal in Midtown back in those days,

  222. you never know what you find

  223. at the end of the driveway,

  224. but I saw a filthy used menstrual pad

  225. just kind of sitting there

  226. at the end of the driveway all dirty

  227. and I thought, wow, that's disgusting.

  228. And then I also thought of Isaiah 64 verse 6

    Isaiah 64:6

  229. and thought all our righteous deeds

  230. are like a polluted garment.

  231. That is what our self-righteous deeds are like.

  232. They are like a menstrual pad,

  233. a dirty, disgusting menstrual pad.

  234. There's nothing in our seemingly self-righteous deeds

  235. that could ever be seen

  236. as something that's attractive to God,

  237. that could earn His favor,

  238. that is good enough for God.

  239. None of it is good enough

  240. and even the fact that we would even possibly believe

  241. that anything we could do is good enough

  242. is an affront to a holy God.

  243. It is an affront.

  244. It's impossible.

  245. Second part of the bad news is

  246. people must see the severity of their sin.

  247. And again, you'd say,

  248. hey man, nobody's perfect.

  249. I'm not that bad.

  250. Right?

  251. I'm not that bad.

  252. Certainly, I'm not as bad as some.

  253. How bad is our sin?

  254. I mean, it's a really relevant question.

  255. I mean, am I going a little too far

  256. in saying that our sin is bad?

  257. I mean, come on, there are really bad sinners,

  258. but certainly the people in this room

  259. would never be in that category.

  260. I mean, that's reserved for people in jail,

  261. you know, people who, you know,

  262. the really bad people.

  263. Certainly not people like us.

  264. Well, this is a relevant question.

  265. How bad is our sin?

  266. Let's make it even more personal.

  267. How bad was your sin?

  268. How bad is your sin?

  269. Well, who the sin is against

  270. determines the severity of the crime.

  271. Who the sin is against

  272. determines the severity of the crime.

  273. What do you mean by that?

  274. Well, let's take something as simple

  275. as just slapping someone in the face.

  276. If you slap a stranger,

  277. there's not going to be a whole lot of consequence.

  278. They might shove you,

  279. maybe they'll punch you,

  280. like what's wrong with you?

  281. You know, yell at you or something.

  282. But it might be minimal response.

  283. Now, if you see a police officer

  284. and you go slap him,

  285. you're going to have a different response

  286. than just slapping a stranger.

  287. But it's the same act.

  288. It's the same act.

  289. Same act, different consequences.

  290. One, I slap a stranger.

  291. Another, I slap a police officer.

  292. Let's say you just happen to be

  293. walking around downtown

  294. and you see the mayor

  295. and you slap him.

  296. That consequence will be even greater

  297. than slapping a cop.

  298. All right, what if the governor's in town?

  299. You slap the governor in the face.

  300. Even greater consequence.

  301. What if the president of the United States

  302. is in town

  303. and somehow you get close enough to him

  304. and you slap him in the face?

  305. It's all the same thing.

  306. It's all slap.

  307. The act is not different

  308. between any of those people.

  309. But notice,

  310. the consequence is different.

  311. Why?

  312. It's not as much what you did,

  313. but who you did it to.

  314. And the truth is,

  315. your sin is not just in the universe.

  316. It's to God.

  317. It's breaking of God's law.

  318. Sin is sin against a holy God.

  319. And so when you sin against a holy God,

  320. it has consequences

  321. consistent with the one you've sinned against.

  322. And our sins are like a slap in God's face.

  323. Do you see it that way?

  324. You must see it that way

  325. because let me tell you this,

  326. if your sin isn't that bad,

  327. then your savior ain't that great.

  328. And if your savior ain't that great,

  329. then your response is going to be pretty small.

  330. And maybe that just answered a really good,

  331. a really important question

  332. for some of you in this room

  333. who've wondered,

  334. why is my response so small?

  335. Maybe it's because

  336. your savior ain't all that great.

  337. And the reason your savior isn't all that great

  338. is because your sin is not that bad.

  339. There is consequence to believing

  340. that your sin is not that bad.

  341. It minimizes the gift of salvation.

  342. It minimizes the reality of the savior

  343. and therefore minimizes the response to that.

  344. Savior and his saving.

  345. God is holy.

  346. And not only is he holy,

  347. but he is infinite in his holiness.

  348. God is infinite in all his attributes.

  349. There is no end to him.

  350. He's not like us.

  351. The fact that he's holy means he's not like us.

  352. That's part of the meaning of holiness

  353. is to be other,

  354. is to be different.

  355. The fact that he is holy means he's not like us

  356. in the fact that we are finite.

  357. We have end to all our attributes.

  358. But God doesn't ever run out.

  359. Right?

  360. God's infinite in his attributes.

  361. Psalm 145 verse 3.

    Psalms 145:3

  362. It says,

  363. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.

  364. And his greatness is unsearchable.

  365. Psalm 147 verse 5.

    Psalms 147:5

  366. It says,

  367. Great is our Lord and abundant in power.

  368. His understanding is beyond measure.

  369. It's beyond measure.

  370. It's not like you think,

  371. Oh, I've reached the end of God's understanding.

  372. I've reached the end of his greatness.

  373. It was pretty good while it lasted,

  374. but I've exhausted all of it.

  375. Never.

  376. Never, never, never.

  377. You never reach the end of his greatness.

  378. You ever reach the end of his understanding,

  379. his power, his might,

  380. his wisdom, his love,

  381. all his attributes.

  382. You don't reach an end to it and you think,

  383. Oh, I've exhausted it.

  384. If God is infinitely holy,

  385. then our sin against him is infinitely wicked.

  386. Or as Romans 7.13 says,

  387. Sinful beyond measure.

  388. Sinful beyond measure.

  389. So the just punishment for sin beyond measure

  390. is punishment without end.

  391. Or what Matthew 25.46 calls eternal punishment.

  392. Some would say,

  393. Eternal punishment for a short little life of sin?

  394. It's unjust.

  395. It's not right.

  396. How could this be?

  397. You're looking at it wrong.

  398. You're looking at it wrong.

  399. You're looking at amount of time.

  400. You're looking at an act.

  401. You're looking at multiple acts.

  402. You're not looking at who you've sinned against.

  403. If God is infinitely holy,

  404. and even just one sin against that infinite holy God,

  405. deserves eternal punishment.

  406. Eternal punishment.

  407. Charles Spurgeon put it this way.

  408. He said,

  409. If we had lain in hell forever,

  410. yet divine justice would not have been fully justified.

  411. For after thousands of years of suffering,

  412. there would remain still an eternity of debt due to God's justice.

  413. If God had annihilated all the sinners that ever lived,

  414. at one stroke,

  415. he would not have so honored his justice

  416. as he did when he took sin and laid it on his son.

  417. And his son bore divine wrath,

  418. which was due to that sin.

  419. For now there has been rendered unto divine justice a full equivalent,

  420. a complete recompense for all the dishonor which it suffered.

  421. Do you believe this?

  422. Do you believe that about your sin?

  423. Do you believe that about your sin?

  424. The consequence of sin is grave.

  425. Romans 6.23 says,

  426. John 3.36 says,

  427. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.

  428. Whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life,

  429. but the wrath of God remains on him.

  430. The wrath of God remains on him.

  431. And that is just.

  432. That is just.

  433. There is a coming judgment.

  434. Judgment.

  435. Hebrews 9.27 says,

  436. It is appointed for man to die once,

  437. and after that comes judgment.

  438. Romans 2.16 says,

  439. On that day when according to my gospel,

  440. God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus,

  441. we will all stand before the judgment seat.

  442. No one escapes it.

  443. No one, no matter what you think or what you try or what you believe,

  444. every single person is appointed to die once.

  445. And after that comes judgment.

  446. There will be judgment.

  447. There will be a judgment seat.

  448. And we will stand before the judge.

  449. And none of our excuses,

  450. none of our facades,

  451. none of our things that we foolishly put our hope in

  452. will stand against the holy God.

  453. There's only one thing that will stand,

  454. and that is our holy God.

  455. And that which he paid for.

  456. And there will be people who will be sent to a place in the Bible called hell.

  457. And hell is described as eternal fire and punishment.

  458. Matthew 25.41 and 46.

  459. Eternal fire and punishment.

  460. In the lake of fire.

  461. Revelation 20.15.

  462. Where they will be tormented day and night, forever and ever,

  463. with no rest, day or night.

  464. This is Revelation 14.11 and 20.10.

  465. Tormented day and night, forever and ever.

  466. No rest, day or night.

  467. Will this torment?

  468. Away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.

  469. 2 Thessalonians 1 verse 9.

    2 Thessalonians 1:9

  470. It's important to read those verses.

  471. It's important to reference those verses.

  472. Because the soul of a man doesn't want to believe these things.

  473. And the rationing of the mind wants to say,

  474. Oh, no, no, no.

  475. God would never do that.

  476. But this is someone who's not thinking about God in a right way.

  477. This is not thinking of some God as holy.

  478. This is not thinking of God as just.

  479. This is not thinking of hell.

  480. And the wrath of God consistently with the word of God.

  481. And if you look at the word of God,

  482. these words are used.

  483. Words like eternal.

  484. Words like where the torment never ends.

  485. Words like no rest day or night.

  486. Words like away from the presence of the Lord.

  487. These are the things that the Bible talks about.

  488. The bad news is this.

  489. We have sinned against God.

  490. We've broken God's law.

  491. We've fallen short of God's glory.

  492. And we're justly under the eternal wrath of holy God.

  493. Now, all this being said,

  494. can you relate to what I've just said personally?

  495. Can you relate to what I've just said personally?

  496. Does this sound like something outside you?

  497. Does this sound like something foreign?

  498. Or do you hear this and think,

  499. I am that sinner.

  500. That's me.

  501. I'm the sinner.

  502. I'm the unrighteous.

  503. I'm the self-righteous.

  504. You're not thinking of somebody else.

  505. You're not thinking of your spouse.

  506. You're not thinking of your father or your mother

  507. or that person who hurt you.

  508. You're thinking,

  509. I am the man.

  510. I am the woman.

  511. I'm the one who sinned.

  512. I'm the one who broke God's law.

  513. I'm the one who's justly under the wrath of God.

  514. My sin put him on the cross.

  515. It was me.

  516. My specific sins.

  517. Not a generic sins.

  518. But this specific sin and this specific sin

  519. and this specific sin.

  520. I know what I have justly deserved of.

  521. I know that.

  522. I believe it.

  523. I've experienced it.

  524. See, if you haven't experienced that,

  525. then what is the good news to you?

  526. If you haven't experienced the weight,

  527. the gravity of the bad news.

  528. A great question is,

  529. what has Jesus saved you from?

  530. What specific immorality has Jesus saved you from?

  531. Or what sense of moralism has he saved you from?

  532. 1 Corinthians 6, 9-11 says,

  533. Do you not know that the unrighteous

  534. will not inherit the kingdom of God?

  535. Do not be deceived.

  536. Listen to these specifics.

  537. Neither the sexually immoral,

  538. sorry,

  539. Neither the sexually immoral,

  540. nor idolaters,

  541. nor adulterers,

  542. nor men who practice homosexuality,

  543. nor thieves,

  544. nor the greedy,

  545. nor drunkards,

  546. nor revilers,

  547. nor swindlers,

  548. will inherit the kingdom of God.

  549. Verse 11,

  550. And such were some of you.

  551. Such were some of you.

  552. But you were washed,

  553. you were sanctified,

  554. you were justified

  555. in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  556. and by the Spirit of God.

  557. This is so important.

  558. Such were some of you.

  559. The one who has been saved,

  560. the one who is a Christian,

  561. they have some of these things in their past.

  562. They could say,

  563. I was sexually immoral.

  564. I was an adulterer.

  565. I was an idolater.

  566. I was one who practiced homosexuality.

  567. I was a thief.

  568. I was greedy.

  569. I was a drunkard.

  570. I was a reviler.

  571. I was a swindler.

  572. That's what I was.

  573. But I was washed.

  574. I was sanctified.

  575. I was justified

  576. in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  577. and by the Spirit of our God.

  578. What is your testimony?

  579. You don't have to have

  580. some great insane testimony

  581. of these wild stories

  582. of how you lived wildly.

  583. You just have to have the testimony

  584. of someone who was justly

  585. under the wrath of God

  586. because of specific sins.

  587. And your testimony is,

  588. that was me.

  589. Was me.

  590. Such were some of you.

  591. That's my testimony.

  592. But I was washed.

  593. I was sanctified.

  594. I was justified

  595. in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  596. and by the Spirit of our God.

  597. Ephesians 2, 1-4 says,

  598. You were dead

  599. in the trespasses and sins

  600. in which you once walked,

  601. following the course of this world,

  602. following the prince

  603. of the power of the air,

  604. the spirit that is now at work

  605. and the sons of disobedience,

  606. among whom we all once lived

  607. in the passions of our flesh,

  608. carrying out the desires of the body,

  609. and the mind,

  610. and were by nature

  611. children of wrath,

  612. like the rest of mankind.

  613. Verse 4,

  614. But God,

  615. this is the good news.

  616. That was the bad news.

  617. We were dead

  618. in our trespasses and sins.

  619. We were following our flesh

  620. in the ways of the world,

  621. carrying out the desires

  622. of the body and the mind.

  623. By nature,

  624. children of wrath,

  625. born into sin.

  626. That's who we all were.

  627. But God,

  628. and here comes the good news.

  629. Good news.

  630. I want to look at five different aspects

  631. of this good news.

  632. But God,

  633. Ephesians 2,

  634. 4-9,

  635. But God,

  636. being rich in mercy,

  637. because of the great love

  638. with which he loved us,

  639. even when we were dead

  640. in our trespasses,

  641. made us alive together with Christ,

  642. by grace,

  643. you have been saved,

  644. and raised us up with him,

  645. and seated us with him

  646. in the heavenly places

  647. in Christ Jesus,

  648. so that in the coming ages

  649. he might show

  650. the immeasurable riches

  651. of his grace

  652. and kindness towards us

  653. in Christ Jesus.

  654. For by grace

  655. you have been saved

  656. through faith.

  657. And this is not your own doing.

  658. It is the gift of God.

  659. Not a result of works

  660. so that no one may boast.

  661. Number one aspect

  662. of the good news,

  663. it's by grace alone.

  664. It's by grace alone.

  665. God's undeserved,

  666. forgiving love.

  667. There is nothing,

  668. nothing you can do,

  669. could do,

  670. or ever will do

  671. that could ever earn

  672. forgiveness,

  673. justification,

  674. love.

  675. He gives this to us freely

  676. while we were dead.

  677. While we were dead.

  678. This is grace.

  679. Do you know this grace?

  680. Do you know this amazing grace?

  681. Romans 4, 1 through 8,

  682. what shall we say then,

  683. was gained by Abraham,

  684. our forefather,

  685. according to the flesh.

  686. For if Abraham was justified

  687. by works,

  688. he has something to boast about,

  689. but not before God.

  690. For what does the scripture say?

  691. Abraham believed God,

  692. and it was counted to him

  693. as righteousness.

  694. Now to the one who works,

  695. his wages are not counted

  696. as a gift,

  697. but as is due.

  698. Okay?

  699. That's an obvious thing.

  700. When you get paid

  701. from your boss,

  702. it's not a gift.

  703. It's your due.

  704. You worked,

  705. you had an exchange

  706. that was agreed upon,

  707. I will work for this amount

  708. of money,

  709. and then you will give me

  710. that amount of money.

  711. I don't shake your hand

  712. or hug you

  713. and celebrate

  714. that you gave me a gift.

  715. I say,

  716. thank you for giving my due.

  717. And if you don't give me my due,

  718. I'm upset about it

  719. because I have a right

  720. to that due.

  721. The one who works,

  722. his wages are not counted

  723. as a gift,

  724. but as is due.

  725. And to the one

  726. who does not work,

  727. but believes in him

  728. who justifies the ungodly,

  729. his faith is counted

  730. as righteousness.

  731. To the one who justifies

  732. the ungodly,

  733. this flies in the face

  734. of the self-righteous person

  735. who thinks that God

  736. justifies me

  737. because I was godly

  738. or I had some semblance

  739. of godliness.

  740. But that's not

  741. what the scriptures say.

  742. The good news

  743. of the grace of God

  744. is that he justifies

  745. the ungodly.

  746. You might say,

  747. I'm ungodly.

  748. I feel so like

  749. I can't ever receive

  750. God's love.

  751. You are actually

  752. the most qualified person

  753. to receive salvation

  754. if you think you're ungodly.

  755. Those are the only kind

  756. he justifies.

  757. Those are the only kind

  758. he justifies.

  759. He justifies the ungodly.

  760. And when you believe that,

  761. your faith is counted

  762. as righteousness.

  763. Just as David also speaks

  764. of the blessing

  765. of the one to whom

  766. God counts righteousness

  767. apart from works.

  768. He says this,

  769. Blessed are those

  770. whose lawless deeds

  771. are forgiven

  772. and whose sins

  773. are covered.

  774. Blessed is the man

  775. against whom the Lord

  776. will not count his sin.

  777. So it's not that you

  778. never sinned,

  779. it's that your sins

  780. are no longer

  781. counted against you.

  782. Blessed is the man

  783. against whom the Lord

  784. will not count his sin.

  785. Blessed is the man

  786. who believes the gospel

  787. of the grace of God.

  788. Titus 3, 4-7 says,

  789. When the goodness

  790. and not loving kindness

  791. of God our Savior appeared,

  792. he saved us.

  793. Not because

  794. of works done

  795. in righteousness.

  796. Not because of anything

  797. we did.

  798. Not because we figured it out.

  799. We did good enough things

  800. that he says,

  801. Oh, you

  802. are the one I want to save

  803. because you're the good one.

  804. You're the good little boy

  805. or girl,

  806. and so I'll save you.

  807. When the goodness

  808. and loving kindness

  809. of God our Savior appeared,

  810. he saved us

  811. not because of works

  812. done by us

  813. in righteousness,

  814. but according to his mercy,

  815. by the washing

  816. of regeneration

  817. and renewal

  818. of the Holy Spirit,

  819. when he poured out

  820. on us richly

  821. through Jesus Christ

  822. our Savior,

  823. so that being justified

  824. by his grace,

  825. we might become heirs

  826. according to the fault

  827. of eternal life.

  828. We've been justified

  829. by grace,

  830. undeserved,

  831. forgiving love,

  832. nothing in us

  833. that we could deserve it.

  834. God loves us

  835. for who we are,

  836. not who we should be,

  837. because no one is

  838. as they should be.

  839. This is grace.

  840. It's a quote

  841. from Brent Manning.

  842. Romans 5 verse 8 says,

    Romans 5:8

  843. God shows his love

  844. for us in this,

  845. that while we were

  846. still sinners,

  847. Christ died for us.

  848. While we were still

  849. sinners,

  850. Christ died for us.

  851. That's grace.

  852. Grace is dying

  853. for people

  854. who don't deserve it.

  855. Grace is giving something

  856. to someone

  857. who doesn't deserve it.

  858. Grace is God's

  859. unmerited favor,

  860. giving you something

  861. that was not merited.

  862. You didn't do anything

  863. to earn it.

  864. In fact,

  865. you did everything

  866. to not deserve it,

  867. and yet God looks upon you

  868. with grace and mercy

  869. and says,

  870. I will give this to you

  871. because I am merciful,

  872. because I am gracious.

  873. God shows his love

  874. for us in this,

  875. that while we were

  876. still sinners,

  877. Christ died for us.

  878. That is good news.

  879. Romans 5, 1 to 2,

  880. therefore,

  881. since we have been

  882. justified by faith,

  883. we have peace with God

  884. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  885. Through him,

  886. we have also obtained

  887. access by faith

  888. into this grace

  889. in which we stand,

  890. and we rejoice

  891. in the hope

  892. of the glory of God.

  893. We actually stand

  894. in grace.

  895. When the Father

  896. looks at us,

  897. he sees the perfect work

  898. of the Son

  899. because of grace.

  900. We're standing in grace.

  901. We oftentimes like

  902. to stand in our own efforts.

  903. We like to stand

  904. in our own merit.

  905. We like to stand

  906. in what we've done.

  907. But the Christian

  908. stands in the grace of God.

  909. Acts 20, 24

  910. calls this gospel

  911. the gospel

  912. of the grace of God.

  913. How have you experienced

  914. God's grace personally?

  915. Do you know?

  916. Can you articulate?

  917. Can you articulate

  918. what grace means to you

  919. and how you experienced it

  920. in specific ways?

  921. Is grace good news to you?

  922. This is important.

  923. In John Newton's

  924. famous song

  925. that he wrote,

  926. Amazing Grace,

  927. John Newton,

  928. the former slave trader,

  929. John Newton,

  930. who sold

  931. people

  932. as slaves

  933. and then became

  934. a Christian,

  935. he said,

  936. Amazing grace,

  937. how sweet the sound

  938. that saved a wretch like me.

  939. I once was lost,

  940. but now I'm found,

  941. was blind,

  942. but now I see.

  943. It was grace

  944. that taught my heart

  945. to fear

  946. and grace

  947. my fears relieved.

  948. How precious

  949. did that grace appear

  950. the hour

  951. I first believed.

  952. Through many dangers,

  953. toils and snares,

  954. I have already come.

  955. Tis grace

  956. hath brought me

  957. safe thus far

  958. and grace

  959. will lead me home.

  960. In that famous hymn,

  961. How Great Thou Art,

  962. he said,

  963. When I think that God,

  964. his son not sparing,

  965. sent him to die,

  966. I scarce can take it in,

  967. that on the cross,

  968. my burden gladly bearing,

  969. he bled and died

  970. to take away

  971. my sin.

  972. God is gracious.

  973. Number two,

  974. first it's put,

  975. through grace alone,

  976. number two,

  977. through faith alone.

  978. Ephesians 2.8 says,

  979. For by grace,

  980. you have been saved

  981. through faith.

  982. How do we get grace?

  983. Through faith.

  984. How do we receive grace?

  985. Through faith.

  986. Romans 10.9-10 says,

  987. If you confess with your mouth

  988. that Jesus is Lord

  989. and believe in your heart

  990. that God raised him

  991. from the dead,

  992. you will be saved.

  993. For with the heart

  994. one believes

  995. and is justified,

  996. and with the mouth

  997. one confesses

  998. and is saved.

  999. Listen,

  1000. you don't ask Jesus

  1001. into your heart.

1002. You don't find any verse

  1003. that says that.

  1004. You don't ask Jesus

  1005. into your heart,

1006. you believe with your heart.

  1007. If you haven't believed

  1008. in your heart

  1009. and you ask Jesus

  1010. into your heart,

  1011. he might not come.

  1012. He's under no obligation

  1013. to answer that prayer

1014. with the coming of himself

  1015. into your heart

  1016. if you haven't believed

  1017. in your heart.

  1018. You have to believe

  1019. in your heart

1020. and you have to believe

  1021. specific things.

  1022. You can't just say,

  1023. well, yeah, I believe.

  1024. Believe what?

  1025. I have a faith.

  1026. What do you mean

  1027. you have a faith?

  1028. A faith in what?

1029. Even demons have a faith.

1030. What do you have faith in?

  1031. Well, I believe

  1032. that there's a God.

  1033. That's not enough.

1034. I believe that Jesus lived.

  1035. That's not,

  1036. that doesn't save you.

  1037. You have to believe

1038. that Jesus is someone specific.

  1039. Just like when Jesus

  1040. walked the earth,

1041. just like when he was born

  1042. of a woman

1043. and had brothers and sisters

1044. and lived in a city

  1045. and walked among people,

  1046. this human being

  1047. that was walking around,

  1048. people had to believe

  1049. something about him

  1050. that was different

  1051. about all the other

  1052. human beings

  1053. that were walking around

1054. who were born of a woman.

  1055. And if they didn't,

  1056. there was great consequence

  1057. to that.

  1058. In the same way,

  1059. we have to believe

1060. not just that Jesus existed,

  1061. not just that Jesus

  1062. was a real person,

  1063. truly man.

  1064. We have to believe

1065. he was also truly God,

  1066. that Jesus is God,

  1067. King, and Lord.

1068. You don't make him Lord.

  1069. You don't say,

  1070. well, I believe he's my Savior,

  1071. but I just haven't believed

  1072. he was my Lord.

  1073. You will find nothing

1074. of the sort in the scriptures.

  1075. Not only that,

  1076. you cannot do that.

  1077. God isn't some person

  1078. you can divide up

  1079. into little pieces

  1080. and say,

  1081. oh yeah,

  1082. he's my Savior,

  1083. but I just haven't

  1084. made him my Lord.

  1085. He's always been Savior

  1086. and Lord.

  1087. He's both of those.

1088. You don't make him that.

  1089. He is that.

1090. You just have to believe that.

  1091. Do you believe it?

  1092. Do you believe

1093. that he rose from the dead?

  1094. Do you believe

  1095. that this person

1096. was not just a person,

1097. but he was truly God as well?

1098. And so he is Savior and Lord.

1099. Because if he's not Lord,

1100. then he's not your Savior.

1101. The only way he can save you,

1102. the only one who is mighty

1103. to save is God himself.

1104. The fact that he's Lord

  1105. and King and God

  1106. is what gives him

1107. the authority to save you.

  1108. Without that,

  1109. he has no authority

  1110. to save you.

  1111. John 3, 16 to 18 says,

1112. God so loved the world

1113. that he gave his only son

1114. that whoever believes in him

  1115. should not perish

  1116. but have eternal life.

1117. For God did not send his son

  1118. into the world

  1119. to condemn the world,

1120. but in order that the world

1121. might be saved through him.

  1122. Whoever believes in him

  1123. is not condemned.

  1124. Whoever does not believe

  1125. is condemned already

1126. because he has not believed

  1127. in the name

1128. of the only son of God.

  1129. Grace through faith,

  1130. grace through believing,

1131. in the name of God.

  1132. In fact,

  1133. John 6, 29 says,

  1134. Jesus said,

1135. this is the work of God

1136. that you believe in him

  1137. who he has sent.

  1138. Faith is a gift

  1139. that God gives us

  1140. that is the medium

  1141. by which grace comes.

  1142. It's through belief.

  1143. It's through faith.

  1144. Grace alone

  1145. through faith alone.

  1146. Number three,

  1147. in Christ alone.

  1148. In Christ alone.

  1149. Faith in what?

  1150. Faith in who?

  1151. Faith in Christ.

  1152. John 14, 6,

  1153. Jesus said,

  1154. I am the way,

  1155. the truth,

  1156. and the life.

1157. No one comes to the Father

  1158. except through me.

1159. This flies in the face

  1160. of the universalists

  1161. that says,

1162. oh, they're all the same.

1163. All the religions are the same.

1164. The only way that all the religions

  1165. are the same

1166. is if none of them said

1167. that one of the people

  1168. was exclusive.

1169. Jesus said that he was exclusive.

  1170. Therefore,

1171. they can't all be true.

1172. There can't be multiple ways to God

  1173. if one person

1174. who said he was God

1175. said that there's only one way.

1176. It flies in the face of that.

1177. No one comes to the Father

  1178. except through me,

  1179. Jesus said.

  1180. Acts 4, 12 says,

  1181. there is salvation

  1182. in no one else.

1183. For there is no other name

  1184. under heaven

  1185. given among men

1186. by which we must be saved.

  1187. That's pretty unequivocal

  1188. right there.

  1189. There's salvation

  1190. in no one else.

1191. This is why we can't say,

  1192. well,

1193. as long as you're sincere

  1194. in your belief.

  1195. No, no, no, no.

  1196. Sincere belief

  1197. in the wrong thing

  1198. is just as foolish

  1199. as insincere belief

  1200. in the wrong thing.

  1201. Maybe even more.

  1202. Okay?

  1203. You have to believe

  1204. in the right person.

  1205. There is salvation

  1206. in no one else.

  1207. 1 Timothy 2, verse 5 says,

    1 Timothy 2:5

  1208. there is one God

1209. and there is one mediator

  1210. between God

  1211. and men,

  1212. the man Christ Jesus.

  1213. Jesus is the mediator.

  1214. Jesus is the mediator

  1215. between us and God.

  1216. You have to,

1217. you get grace through faith

  1218. and that faith

1219. has to be in a specific person

  1220. to get it

1221. and that is in Jesus.

  1222. 2 Corinthians 5, 21 says,

  1223. for our sake,

1224. he made him to be sin

  1225. who knew no sin

  1226. so that in him

  1227. we might become

  1228. the righteousness of God.

  1229. In him.

  1230. In Christ.

  1231. And when that happens,

  1232. Romans 8, 1 says,

  1233. there's now no condemnation

  1234. for those who are

  1235. in Christ Jesus.

1236. When you're in Christ Jesus,

  1237. there's no more condemnation.

  1238. The condemnation

1239. that was justly upon us

  1240. because of our sin

1241. is no longer on us

1242. when we are in Christ Jesus.

1243. when we're in Christ Jesus.

1244. This is why we can't add,

  1245. it can't be,

  1246. well, I need Jesus

1247. but then I also have to be

  1248. a really good person.

  1249. No, no, no.

  1250. It's Jesus plus nothing

  1251. equals everything.

  1252. Jesus alone.

  1253. Christ alone.

  1254. It's not Jesus

  1255. in my good works.

  1256. It's not Jesus

1257. in my good church attendance.

  1258. It's not Jesus

  1259. in me being better

  1260. than the other person

1261. or better than my spouse

1262. or better than my neighbor

1263. or whoever it may be.

  1264. It's Jesus plus nothing

  1265. equals everything.

  1266. Jesus alone.

  1267. In Christ alone.

1268. Like to him we sing, right?

  1269. Till on that cross

  1270. as Jesus died

  1271. the wrath of God

  1272. was satisfied.

1273. For every sin on him

  1274. was laid.

  1275. Here in the death

  1276. of Christ I live.

1277. And as he stands in victory

  1278. sin's curse

1279. has lost its grip on me.

  1280. For I am his

  1281. and he is mine

  1282. bought with the precious

  1283. blood of Christ.

  1284. It's in Christ alone.

  1285. It's in Christ alone.

1286. So it's by grace alone

  1287. through faith alone

  1288. in Christ alone

  1289. with repentance.

  1290. Number four

  1291. with repentance.

  1292. Mark 1 14 to 15

1293. says Jesus came into Galilee

  1294. proclaiming the gospel

  1295. of God.

  1296. Jesus came in

  1297. proclaiming the gospel

  1298. of God.

1299. Okay what did he say?

1300. He said the time is fulfilled

  1301. the kingdom of God

  1302. is at hand.

  1303. Repent

  1304. and believe the gospel.

  1305. Repent and believe.

  1306. This is the gospel

  1307. that Jesus preached.

  1308. Repent and believe.

  1309. Luke 13 3

1310. says now I tell you

  1311. unless you repent

  1312. you will all

  1313. likewise perish.

  1314. Unless you repent

  1315. you will all

  1316. likewise perish.

  1317. Repentance

1318. is turning from your sin

  1319. and turning to God.

  1320. True faith

  1321. involves repentance

  1322. because you're turning

  1323. from what you were

  1324. trusting in.

  1325. Everybody has faith

  1326. in something.

  1327. There's no such thing

  1328. as someone who doesn't

  1329. have faith.

  1330. Everybody believes

  1331. and trusts in something.

  1332. Repentance is taking

  1333. that which you were

  1334. putting your faith

  1335. and trust in

  1336. that was not Christ

  1337. and turning and putting

  1338. it into Christ.

  1339. That's repentance.

1340. You were going one way

  1341. you turn around

1342. and go the other way.

  1343. Acts 26 19-20

  1344. Paul says

  1345. I declared first

  1346. to those in Damascus

  1347. then in Jerusalem

  1348. and throughout all

  1349. the region of Judea

1350. and also to the Gentiles

  1351. that they should repent

  1352. and turn to God

  1353. performing deeds

  1354. in keeping

  1355. with their repentance.

  1356. There's no such thing

  1357. as belief

  1358. without repentance.

1359. Do you hear me on that?

  1360. This is important.

  1361. There's no such thing

  1362. as belief

  1363. without repentance.

  1364. Repentance

  1365. is the evidence

  1366. of belief.

  1367. They should repent

  1368. and turn to God

  1369. performing deeds

  1370. in keeping

  1371. with their repentance.

  1372. To profess belief

  1373. that Jesus is God

  1374. without repentance

  1375. is not to believe

  1376. that Jesus is God

  1377. because the very nature

  1378. of him being God

  1379. King

  1380. Lord

  1381. requires

  1382. demands

  1383. repentance

  1384. from all things

  1385. that we've trust in

  1386. or worshipped

  1387. apart from him.

  1388. You can't say

  1389. I believe he's God

  1390. but I'll worship another.

  1391. I believe he's God

  1392. but I'll do

  1393. whatever I want.

  1394. I'll act like I'm God.

  1395. That has to be

  1396. repented of.

  1397. How have you

  1398. experienced

  1399. God's kindness

  1400. leading you to repentance?

  1401. Romans 2.4

  1402. says his kindness

  1403. leads us to repentance.

  1404. How have you

  1405. experienced that?

  1406. How can you

  1407. testify of that?

  1408. I was walking

  1409. the wrong way.

  1410. I was

1411. this is what I trusted in.

1412. This is what I believed in.

  1413. I believe

  1414. me personally

  1415. I believe that

  1416. my self-righteousness

  1417. was enough.

  1418. I believe if I was

  1419. good enough

  1420. if I could be

  1421. better than other people

  1422. then I'd be okay

  1423. and the harder

1424. I tried to be good enough

  1425. the more I found

  1426. I kept screwing up

  1427. and I kept

  1428. falling short

  1429. and I was

  1430. it was starting to

  1431. my foundation

  1432. was unmoored.

  1433. I started feeling

  1434. super insecure

  1435. and unsteady.

  1436. That's what led me

  1437. to Christ.

  1438. His kindness

  1439. in revealing

  1440. the ineptitude

  1441. of my own selfish

  1442. self-centered performance

  1443. and self-righteousness

1444. the fact that I could

  1445. never measure up.

  1446. His kindness

  1447. led me to see

1448. that that was not the way

  1449. but that Jesus

  1450. was the way

  1451. the truth

  1452. and the life

  1453. and His kindness

  1454. caused me to turn

  1455. from my trusting

  1456. in my self-righteousness

  1457. my own vain glory

  1458. and trusting

  1459. and giving glory

  1460. to God.

  1461. That's how God

  1462. saved me.

1463. How has He saved you?

  1464. How have you experienced

  1465. God's kindness

1466. in the midst of your sin

  1467. leading you to repentance?

  1468. By grace alone

  1469. through faith alone

  1470. in Christ alone

  1471. with repentance

  1472. and future hope

  1473. number five

  1474. Colossians 1

  1475. 4-5

  1476. Since we heard

  1477. of your faith

  1478. in Christ Jesus

  1479. and of the love

  1480. that you have

  1481. for all the saints

  1482. because of the hope

  1483. laid up for you

  1484. in heaven

  1485. of this you have

  1486. heard before

  1487. in the word

  1488. of the truth

  1489. the gospel

  1490. is a future hope.

1491. It gives us future hope.

  1492. It gives us hope

  1493. that says

1494. this life isn't all there is.

  1495. The good news

  1496. of the gospel

  1497. says Jesus is returning

1498. and when we see Him

  1499. we'll be like Him

  1500. and we'll be saved

  1501. from sin

  1502. ultimately

  1503. and we'll live

  1504. with Him eternally.

  1505. Galatians 5

    Galatians 5:5

  1506. verse 5

  1507. says through the Spirit

  1508. by faith

  1509. we ourselves

  1510. eagerly await

  1511. for the hope

  1512. of righteousness.

  1513. Are you waiting

  1514. for this?

  1515. Are you eagerly waiting

  1516. for the hope

  1517. of righteousness?

  1518. That right now

  1519. God is saving you

  1520. but one day

  1521. He will save you

  1522. in the fullest sense

  1523. that He'll give you

  1524. a new body

  1525. and death will be

  1526. swallowed up in victory

  1527. and there'll be

  1528. no more presence

1529. of sin in our life.

  1530. This is the hope

  1531. of righteousness.

  1532. All the futility

  1533. of sin

  1534. and the futility

  1535. of this life

  1536. the banging up

  1537. of our heads

  1538. against the wall

1539. day in and day out

  1540. against all these things

  1541. that are futile

  1542. because of the sin

  1543. of all of us.

  1544. Death

  1545. and sickness

  1546. and sadness

  1547. pressing in on us

  1548. and causing us

  1549. to feel unfulfilled

  1550. in this world.

1551. We cling to the hope

  1552. of righteousness

  1553. that one day

  1554. the King of Kings

1555. will make all things right

1556. and He will save us

  1557. to the uttermost

1558. and sin will be swallowed up

1559. death will be swallowed up

  1560. in victory.

  1561. Romans 8 23

  1562. says

  1563. not only the creation

  1564. but we ourselves

  1565. who have the first

  1566. fruits of the Spirit

  1567. groan inwardly

  1568. as we wait eagerly

  1569. for adoption as sons

  1570. the redemption

  1571. of our bodies.

1572. We long for the day

1573. when sin is no longer

  1574. present in our body.

  1575. What a great day

  1576. that will be.

  1577. 1 Peter 1 3-4

  1578. says

  1579. blessed be the God

  1580. and Father

1581. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1582. According to His great mercy

  1583. He has caused us

  1584. to be born again

  1585. to a living hope

  1586. through the resurrection

  1587. of Jesus Christ

  1588. from the dead

  1589. to an inheritance

  1590. that is imperishable

  1591. undefiled

  1592. and unfading

1593. kept in heaven for you.

  1594. It's a living hope.

  1595. It's knowing

  1596. this is real.

1597. We are living in hope.

  1598. There is a hope

  1599. that is real.

  1600. It's a hope

  1601. that Jesus will return

1602. to make all things right.

  1603. We live in that.

  1604. Are you experiencing

  1605. a living hope?

1606. Is it alive in you?

  1607. Where you're not

  1608. a comer under

  1609. but an overcomer.

  1610. You're not coming

  1611. under your circumstances

  1612. because you have

  1613. a living hope

  1614. that these circumstances

1615. are not the final word.

1616. They're not the final outcome.

1617. When it looks like death

  1618. had won.

  1619. When it looks like

  1620. sickness had won.

  1621. When it looks like

  1622. sadness and futility

  1623. had won.

  1624. We always know

  1625. that the death, burial

  1626. and resurrection of Jesus

1627. points us to a better way

  1628. and says,

  1629. uh-uh.

  1630. There's coming a day

1631. when all the wrong things

  1632. will be made right.

  1633. It's a living hope.

  1634. And we experience that

1635. day in and day out

  1636. and we can testify

1637. of the power of the gospel in this.

  1638. It's what Fanny Crosby

  1639. called blessed assurance.

  1640. Blessed assurance,

  1641. Jesus is mine.

  1642. Oh, what a foretaste

  1643. of glory divine.

  1644. Heir of salvation,

  1645. purchase of blood,

  1646. born of his spirit,

  1647. washed in his blood.

  1648. Or like to him,

  1649. it is well,

  1650. though Satan should buffet,

  1651. though trials should come,

1652. let this blessed assurance control

  1653. that Christ has regarded

  1654. my helpless estate

1655. and has shed his own blood

  1656. for my soul.

  1657. My sin,

  1658. oh, the bliss

  1659. of this glorious thought,

1660. my sin not in part,

  1661. but the whole,

1662. is nailed to the cross

1663. and I bear it no more.

  1664. Praise the Lord,

  1665. praise the Lord,

  1666. oh my soul.

  1667. And also Fanny Crosby

  1668. in the hymn,

1669. To God Be The Glory,

  1670. says,

  1671. Oh, perfect redemption,

  1672. the purchase of blood,

  1673. to every believer,

  1674. the promise of God,

  1675. the vilest offender

  1676. who truly believes

  1677. that moment from Jesus

  1678. a pardon receives.

1679. Great things he hath taught us,

1680. great things he hath done,

  1681. and great are rejoicing

  1682. through Jesus the Son,

  1683. but pure and higher

  1684. and greater will be

  1685. our wonder,

  1686. our transport,

  1687. when Jesus we see.

  1688. In conclusion,

  1689. the gospel

  1690. is the good news

  1691. of salvation

  1692. by grace alone,

  1693. through faith alone,

  1694. in Christ alone,

  1695. with repentance

  1696. and future hope.

1697. And I wrap it up here

  1698. with 25 quick reasons.

1699. I'm just going to read

  1700. through these.

1701. I'm not going to talk about them.

  1702. 25 reasons the gospel

  1703. is good news.

  1704. To wrap it up,

1705. I just want you to

  1706. listen to these,

  1707. receive these,

  1708. think about these.

  1709. This is 25 reasons

1710. the gospel is good news.

  1711. Number one,

  1712. you are alienated,

  1713. hostile,

1714. and enemies in your minds,

  1715. and he reconciled you.

  1716. You were held hostage,

  1717. he paid your ransom.

  1718. You were cursed,

  1719. he redeemed you.

  1720. You were a sinner,

  1721. he forgave you.

  1722. You were in darkness,

1723. he brought you into light.

  1724. You were an orphan

  1725. and a slave,

  1726. and he adopted you

  1727. as his child.

  1728. You were wicked,

  1729. he justified you.

  1730. You were unrighteous,

  1731. he made you righteous.

1732. You were enslaved to sin,

  1733. he set you free.

  1734. You were guilty,

  1735. he made you innocent.

1736. You were full of shame,

  1737. he took your shame.

  1738. You were empty,

  1739. he filled you up.

  1740. You were dead,

  1741. he made you alive.
