  7. Philippians chapter 1 verse 27,

    Philippians 1:27

  8. Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ,

  9. that whether I come and see you or else be absent,

  10. I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit,

  11. with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,

  12. and in nothing terrified by your adversaries,

  13. which is to them an evident token of perdition,

  14. but to you of salvation, and that from God.

  15. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, or for the sake of Christ,

  16. not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake,

  17. having the same conflict which you saw in me, and now here to be in me.

  18. The suffering with which Paul is talking here in this passage

  19. is not the suffering that comes as a result of living in a fallen state.

  20. This is not the kind of suffering that applies to every person's life that has ever lived.

  21. There's a few things in terms of hardship that we all face.

  22. Because of our sinful nature, because of the curse of sin on this earth,

  23. through Adam and Eve and so on passed down to all of us,

  24. there are certain hardships that we face.

  25. Death is one of those things primarily.

  26. Paul's discussion here of suffering is not really in the realm of that type of suffering.

  27. It's not hardship for hardship's sake.

  28. It's not just about going through difficult times.

  29. The suffering that he's referencing here in this passage

  30. is a suffering and a persecution

  31. that comes specifically as a result of our commitment to the gospel.

  32. It's not just a suffering with sickness because we have sin-cursed bodies that are in the process of decay.

  33. It's not that type of suffering.

  34. It's the suffering that we may deal with persecution and ridicule

  35. and even face a possible death for our stand on the gospel.

  36. It's preaching the truth and dealing with the opposition.

  37. That's the suffering that he is referring to here.

  38. Kent Hughes, in his commentary on the book of Philippians,

  39. tells the story of a man named Mehdi Dibaj.

  40. Mehdi was arrested by the government in Iran in 1984

  41. after he converted from Islam to Christianity

  42. and became a pastor in a Christian church there in a Christian community.

  43. He spent 10 years in prison

  44. until he was sentenced to be executed for his faith in 1994.

  45. This is just a few years ago.

  46. The Iranians released him under pressure from the United States government,

  47. but he was found dead just a few days later in a park.

  48. He was the third Christian murdered in Iran

  49. after being released from prison during that specific time frame.

  50. Kent Hughes includes some of Mehdi Dibaj's last statement of defense

  51. when he had gone to trial in Iran.

  52. Here's the last sentences that he wrote and that he exclaimed in this trial.

  53. He said,

  54. It's very much reminiscent of verse 21 in Philippians.

  55. Philippians 1, isn't it?

  56. For to me to live is Christ, to die is gain.

  57. And then he said,

  58. Therefore, I am not only satisfied to be in prison for the honor of his holy name,

  59. but am ready to give my life for the sake of Jesus my Lord.

  60. Standing before this council and this defense,

  61. knowing that what awaited him,

  62. if he stood firm on sound doctrine,

  63. if he continued to preach the gospel,

  64. was certain execution,

  65. and those were the words that he expressed to this council.

  66. I stand firmly committed that Jesus Christ is our Savior,

  67. and he is the Son of God.

  68. Of course, God has an amazing purpose,

  69. gospel purpose,

  70. for this kind of suffering.

  71. We've talked about that in our study already of chapter 1 in Philippians,

  72. but a recent article by the Gospel Coalition stated that right now,

  73. in 2019 or 2020 now,

  74. the fastest growing segment of the global church is in Iran.

  75. It's amazing because of the persecution of believers.

  76. The church is growing incredibly in places like the Middle East

  77. and in China and in communist environments.

  78. The church is growing because of the persecution of believers.

  79. People who are willing to stay committed to their faith,

  80. even when being opposed by the people around them.

  81. God has a gospel purpose in that,

  82. and he uses it in a fantastic way.

  83. It's something that we are not so familiar with

  84. because of the blessings that we experience

  85. and the freedoms that we have here.

  86. But all across the world,

  87. there are still people

  88. that are up against severe persecution,

  89. even martyrdom,

  90. all because they're Christians.

  91. Of course, persecution is not exclusive to Christianity.

  92. There's lots of people groups.

  93. There are lots of religions that are persecuted.

  94. But it is to be expected for Christians

  95. according to the scriptures.

  96. Last week, we talked about this demonstration

  97. of the gospel-worthy life.

  98. We'll cover these last two points this morning,

  99. which the first being the sign of a gospel-worthy life.

  100. The sign of a gospel-worthy life.

  101. Look with me again at verse 28.

  102. Paul says,

  103. and nothing terrified by your opponents or your adversaries,

  104. which is to them an evident token of perdition,

  105. but to you of salvation,

  106. and that from God.

  107. In verse 28, we see the words evident token,

  108. which just means a sign.

  109. Refers to proving or giving evidence

  110. of something that's true.

  111. A sign gives direction.

  112. And it's like coming to a fork in the road.

  113. One sign points toward the path of opposition to the gospel

  114. and leads to the city of destruction.

  115. The other sign points toward faith in the gospel

  116. and leads to the city of salvation.

  117. Allowing believers to go through seasons of persecution

  118. is used by God as a means of making a clear separation

  119. of the saved and the unsaved.

  120. Paul says that the willingness of a believer

  121. to faithfully endure suffering

  122. gives evidence of the fact that unbelievers will perish

  123. and believers will be saved.

  124. That's exactly what he's saying in verse 28.

  125. Unbelief demonstrated by those who oppose the gospel

  126. is the sign of coming judgment.

  127. Endurance demonstrated by those who believe the gospel

  128. then is the sign of a coming salvation.

  129. Three quick notes underneath this point

  130. if you're keeping track of them

  131. maybe in your scripture journals.

  132. The first thing is this.

  133. Our endurance is a sign of judgment

  134. to those who oppose the gospel.

  135. Our endurance in the faith and through persecution

  136. is a sign of judgment to those who oppose the gospel.

  137. Paul says it to the unbeliever,

  138. to the adversary, to the opponent.

  139. It is an evident token of perdition

  140. or destruction and judgment.

  141. It doesn't mean that they acknowledge the sign

  142. but the sign is still yet evident.

  143. The believer's willingness to endure suffering

  144. for the sake of the gospel signals to their adversaries

  145. that they will one day be judged by God

  146. for their unbelief and for the persecution

  147. that they have brought on God's people.

  148. But this sign has a purpose

  149. and this is the point that I want us to understand here.

  150. This sign of destruction,

  151. this sign, evident token of perdition,

  152. it has the purpose.

  153. It's not only meant to condemn the unbeliever

  154. but I believe it's actually meant

  155. to draw them to salvation.

  156. There's two ways that I think it does this.

  157. First, it does it, it's produced through our message.

  158. This sign is produced in our message.

  159. Look with me again at verse 27.

  160. Paul urges these believers to let their manner of life

  161. be worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  162. And here's how it would be worthy.

  163. That I may hear of your affairs,

  164. that you stand fast in one spirit,

  165. that's a commitment to biblical doctrine,

  166. with one mind striving together for the faith,

  167. that's the offensive posture of sharing the gospel

  168. with the people around you

  169. and in nothing terrified by your opponents.

  170. It comes by standing firm,

  171. faithfully declaring the gospel.

  172. Our endurance then is clearly lived out,

  173. practically, in action.

  174. And that action is founded on

  175. the declaration of a particular message.

  176. What is this endurance?

  177. It's the message that we give.

  178. What is that message?

  179. That all who reject Christ will die in their sins

  180. and their soul will live eternally,

  181. separated from God in a place called hell.

  182. How is our suffering,

  183. how is our endurance a sign of judgment to our opponents?

  184. Because in that sign is the reality of our message,

  185. that as they oppose us,

  186. what they're opposing is what we are preaching

  187. and what we are believing.

  188. And if we're doing it the right way,

  189. what we're focused on in our preaching

  190. and in our teaching and in our sharing with our friends

  191. is not all of the preferential things of church,

  192. not all of the various things

  193. that we would dig through the scriptures

  194. and try to argue with someone about.

  195. What we are faithfully preaching is the gospel,

  196. that Jesus is God,

  197. that he came to save sinners,

  198. and all who reject him as God

  199. that do not believe

  200. are destined for destruction and hell.

  201. But our message is also a sign of hope.

  202. Because those same opponents

  203. that reject the gospel,

  204. if they will at some point repent in their heart

  205. and repent of their unbelief

  206. and turn to Jesus Christ,

  207. God will forgive their sins

  208. and grant them eternal life.

  209. It's a wonderful sign of hope.

  210. It's not just a sign of destruction.

  211. Our mission is to proclaim the gospel

  212. to sinners just like us.

  213. And it may be that God allows us

  214. to suffer for that proclamation

  215. so that he might use our enduring witness

  216. to save the very person that afflicts us.

  217. It may be that God allows you to suffer

  218. for your faith in your family

  219. or in your place of work

  220. or among your friends

  221. or even a stranger,

  222. specifically so that your enduring witness

  223. would be used by God

  224. to draw that opponent to salvation.

  225. Remember, faith cometh by hearing

  226. and hearing comes by the word of God.

  227. We're to keep defending and preaching Jesus

  228. so that even the most vehement deniers of truth

  229. might hear the message and be saved.

  230. So this is a sign of judgment

  231. and it's a sign of hope.

  232. So the sign is produced in our message.

  233. The sign is also produced in our suffering.

  234. It's also produced in our suffering.

  235. God often uses our willingness to remain faithful

  236. as a means of drawing our opponents to salvation.

  237. Think about the scene of the cross

  238. as Jesus was crucified for the sins of mankind,

  239. for us.

  240. Think about all of the opponents involved in that story.

  241. The first one that comes to mind for me is the thief.

  242. In fact, you could probably go to Luke chapter 23

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  243. and Luke chapter 24

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  244. and see all of these examples in one setting.

  245. Remember the thief on the cross?

  246. There was two of them.

  247. Jesus split the two.

  248. There was one on his right and one on his left.

  249. I think it's the gospel of John tells us

  250. that when they first were being crucified,

  251. both of these thieves were ridiculing and mocking Jesus.

  252. They were asking if he really was who he said he was.

  253. Why didn't he save himself and then save them along with him?

  254. Both of them were involved in this.

  255. But at some point in the six hours of suffering on the cross,

  256. seeing the suffering of Christ,

  257. one of them was impacted in a specific way,

  258. not necessarily because of the words of Christ,

  259. but because of the way that he suffered.

  260. So that some point during that crucifixion story,

  261. one of the thieves looks at the other thief

  262. and says, you gotta stop this.

  263. This isn't right.

  264. And he looks at Jesus and he says, remember me, please.

  265. And what does Jesus say?

  266. It's amazing, his love.

  267. Even in the midst of that, after hours,

  268. this man has been ridiculing and mocking him.

  269. He's in the same condition as him.

  270. He's in no reason to mock anybody,

  271. no condition to mock anybody.

  272. And he's relentless with Jesus.

  273. And then finally something clicks in his mind

  274. as he witnesses the suffering of Jesus.

  275. And Jesus looks at him and says,

  276. today you will be with me in paradise.

  277. Just like that, he's willing to forgive him

  278. and demonstrate his love.

  279. We see because of the suffering of Christ,

  280. the thief on the cross comes to Christ.

  281. Remember the centurion.

  282. That was one of the men that literally crucified Jesus.

  283. Once Jesus takes his final breath,

  284. he says, truly, this was the son of God.

  285. One of the men that was splitting his garments

  286. and casting lots, making a mockery of him,

  287. literally nailed him to the cross.

  288. And he sees the way Christ suffered.

  289. And God uses that to draw him to salvation.

  290. Do you remember Joseph of Arimathea?

  291. Luke tells us that Joseph was actually a part of the council,

  292. that kangaroo trial that night,

  293. that condemned Jesus to be crucified.

  294. He was on that council.

  295. Now there's a good opportunity or a good chance

  296. that he didn't agree with the council,

  297. but he was complicit in what they were doing.

  298. Yet it was Joseph of Arimathea,

  299. after seeing the way Christ suffered,

  300. goes to Pilate and begs the body of Jesus

  301. and takes his body off.

  302. And as soon as they could,

  303. before the Passover Sabbath had begun,

  304. takes him and puts him in that borrowed tomb,

  305. understanding that Jesus wasn't gonna stay there.

  306. And then the crowd that gathered around,

  307. that gnashed on him with his teeth,

  308. that the Bible says wagged their heads and ridiculed him

  309. as they saw the sign above his head that said,

  310. said King of the Jews.

  311. That in this three hours of darkness,

  312. as we see the darkness rest between noon and three o'clock,

  313. as Jesus is being crucified,

  314. we see him absorbing the wrath of God.

  315. In the midst of all of that,

  316. this crowd is convicted so that they end up going home.

  317. And it says they're beating their breast as a sign of guilt

  318. and as a sign of repentance for what they had just done.

  319. Why?

  320. Because they had witnessed how Jesus had suffered.

  321. So God uses that.

  322. He uses our endurance.

  323. He uses our willingness to suffer to bring others to Christ.

  324. Of course, it's not just what Jesus is suffering.

  325. Just in Philippi, they understood this.

  326. Remember the Philippian jailer.

  327. Why was it that he ran into Paul and Silas' jail cell?

  328. And at the end of that night or at midnight and said,

  329. what must I do to be saved?

  330. It was because of the way they suffered

  331. and endured that persecution that he inflicted.

  332. Perhaps even witnessing and approving of the murder of Stephen

  333. was used of God to begin softening the heart of the apostle Paul,

  334. who at that point was known as Saul of Tarsus.

  335. Listen, when we suffer well,

  336. we give evidence of the truth of the gospel.

  337. Why would anyone face death for something they didn't genuinely believe in?

  338. When we're willing to endure opposition

  339. because God will use our testimony to bring others to faith,

  340. and thereby our suffering is a sign of their judgment.

  341. So our endurance is a sign of judgment to those who oppose the gospel.

  342. It's also a sign of our salvation.

  343. It's also a sign of our salvation.

  344. Look with me again at verse 28.

  345. To them, it's an evident token of perdition,

  346. but to you, that is the Philippian believers,

  347. it's a sign of salvation.

  348. Listen, this part's important.

  349. Endurance is not the cause of your salvation.

  350. It is only the sign of genuine salvation.

  351. You are not saved because you endure.

  352. You endure because you are truly saved.

  353. Suffering is the proving ground for authentic faith.

  354. Those who have truly trusted in Christ

  355. will stand firm on the gospel

  356. because they're fully convinced of its truth.

  357. Those who cower and reject the gospel

  358. because of impending opposition

  359. prove that their profession of faith

  360. was not genuine saving faith.

  361. And so in this sign of salvation,

  362. not only does God separate with this sign

  363. the opposition that is destined for judgment

  364. and the ones who endure in their faith

  365. that are destined for salvation,

  366. not only does he make that separation,

  367. but as he gets into this group of professing believers,

  368. our endurance and suffering then becomes another form

  369. of separating the sheep from the goats, so to speak,

  370. where those who do endure

  371. see the sign of their salvation,

  372. those who do not endure

  373. did not have genuine faith.

  374. Of course, the scriptures testify to this over and over.

  375. Hebrews chapter three and verse 14,

  376. the writer says,

  377. we are made partakers of Christ

  378. if we hold the beginning of our confidence

  379. steadfast unto the end.

  380. And then we're reminded by John in his first epistle.

  381. They went out from us, but they were not of us.

  382. For if they had been of us,

  383. they would have continued with us.

  384. But they went out that it might become plain

  385. that they all are not of us.

  386. So this idea of suffering for the gospel

  387. is not only a sign of the opposition's destruction

  388. and the endurer of salvation.

  389. But as you get into this realm of professing believers,

  390. God begins to weed out those who only profess the faith

  391. but have never actually believed it.

  392. It's a pruning process.

  393. God often does with his church.

  394. This is not to insinuate that it's possible

  395. for a person once saved to lose their salvation.

  396. The Bible clearly teaches that that's not the case.

  397. It's not to be representative of a believer

  398. that falls in a moment of weakness and fear.

  399. That's not it either.

  400. This is representative of a professing believer

  401. that when facing persecution for their professed belief

  402. reveals that they never did actually truly believe

  403. so that the result of their rejection

  404. isn't mourning or grief over their sinful denial.

  405. Rather, they end up joining the ranks of the opposition.

  406. There's a difference in how they continue.

  407. And it's at this point, before we move on,

  408. that I want to encourage those of us

  409. that have fallen in a moment of weakness in this way.

  410. Just because you've had a moment

  411. where you didn't stand as firm on the gospel

  412. as you should have or could have

  413. doesn't mean automatically that you were never truly saved.

  414. Your salvation was not earned by works

  415. and it won't be kept by your works either.

  416. It's the power of God that saved you

  417. and it's the power of God that secures that salvation.

  418. Persecution serves as God's means

  419. of exposing those in the church

  420. that have not actually believed.

  421. And there's a difference between a person

  422. that apostatizes the faith

  423. because they never truly believed

  424. and a person that has genuinely been saved

  425. but in some way faltered out of fear.

  426. And I want to give you an illustration

  427. of the two differences.

  428. Turn with me to Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  429. Would you do that?

  430. Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  431. Just a few pages to the left in your Bibles.

  432. I want you to see it

  433. because I want you to believe me.

  434. I don't want you to take my word for it.

  435. I want you to take God's word for it.

  436. Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  437. I want you to see this.

  438. I think it'd be helpful to us.

  439. There's a lot happening in this passage

  440. leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus

  441. but there's two different narratives

  442. that involve rejecting Christ.

  443. One is the narrative that surrounds Judas Iscariot

  444. and his betrayal of Christ.

  445. The other is the narrative of Simon Peter's denial of Christ.

  446. Judas and Simon were not, or Peter,

  447. were not the same in this.

  448. Peter showed an evidence of weakness as a believer

  449. but he was a believer.

  450. Jesus had actually already confirmed that.

  451. Judas' story is different.

  452. Let's look at his first.

  453. Look at Luke chapter 22 verses three through six first.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  454. Then entered Satan into Judas,

  455. surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the 12.

  456. And he went his way and communed with the chief priest

  457. and captains how he might betray him unto them.

  458. And they were glad and covenanted to give him money.

  459. And he promised and saw opportunity

  460. to betray Jesus unto them in the absence of the multitude.

  461. There's a very vindictive, very adversarial,

  462. very much opposition to Jesus.

  463. That's what's happening there in Judas' narrative.

  464. Now look with me at verse 21.

  465. Verse 21 to 23.

  466. Jesus says,

  467. But behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me

  468. is with me on the table.

  469. And truly the Son of Man goeth as it was determined,

  470. but woe unto the man by whom he is betrayed.

  471. And they began to inquire among themselves

  472. which of them it was that should do this thing.

  473. And it's at that point in the narrative

  474. that we understand Judas left the room,

  475. knowing where Jesus would end up going

  476. after the supper was over.

  477. He betrayed Jesus and turned him into the chief priest

  478. and to the soldiers there.

  479. Judas' betrayal of Jesus was rooted in his lack of faith.

  480. He didn't truly trust Christ,

  481. but for three years,

  482. he took part in the ministry of Christ.

  483. There's a warning in this for us,

  484. just in the story of Judas,

  485. that you may sit with someone in church

  486. for years and years and years,

  487. but really when the opposition

  488. really starts to show his face,

  489. you might find out that this person

  490. that is even partnered in ministry to an extent

  491. was not actually a genuine believer

  492. and will just as fast turn on the faith

  493. as they professed that same faith.

  494. Judas was an unbeliever

  495. who was exposed for his unbelief

  496. after three years of trying to hide it

  497. and put on this charade.

  498. Peter was different.

  499. Let's look at his narrative in Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  500. Look with me at verse 31 to 34 first.

  501. And the Lord said,

  502. Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you.

  503. Now in Judas, in verse three, Satan entered him.

  504. That's not the case with Peter

  505. because Peter was a true believer.

  506. Satan wanted to destroy him,

  507. but he couldn't enter into him.

  508. He says he wants to sift you as wheat.

  509. But I've prayed for you, Peter,

  510. that your faith fail not.

  511. And when you are converted

  512. or when you are restored or renewed,

  513. strengthen thy brethren.

  514. That statement in and of itself

  515. is evidence that Jesus understood

  516. Peter's genuine conversion.

  517. He was a genuine believer.

  518. He knew he was gonna deny him,

  519. but he also knew that he was a genuine believer

  520. and there was gonna come a time after that denial

  521. that he repented of that denial

  522. and that he strengthened the other apostles

  523. and would once again lead them.

  524. Verse 33,

  525. and he said unto him,

  526. Lord, I'm ready to go with thee,

  527. both into prison and to death.

  528. And he said,

  529. I tell thee, Peter,

  530. the cock shall not crow this day

  531. before thou shalt thrice,

  532. three times deny that thou knowest me.

  533. Let's skip down to verse 54.

  534. This is amazing.

  535. Verse 54.

  536. Then took they him,

  537. that's Jesus.

  538. He's in the process of trial.

  539. And they brought him into the high priest house

  540. and Peter followed afar off.

  541. And when they had kindled a fire

  542. in the midst of the hall

  543. and were set down together,

  544. Peter sat down among them

  545. to witness what was going on with Jesus.

  546. But a certain maid beheld him

  547. as he sat by the fire

  548. and earnestly looked upon him and said,

  549. this man was also with him.

  550. And he denied him,

  551. saying, woman, I know him not.

  552. After a little while,

  553. another saw him and said,

  554. thou art also of them.

  555. And Peter said, man, I am not.

  556. And about the space of one hour

  557. after another,

  558. confidently affirmed,

  559. saying, of a truth,

  560. this fellow also was with him,

  561. for he is a Galilean.

  562. And Peter said the third time,

  563. man, I know not what thou sayest.

  564. And immediately,

  565. while he yet spake,

  566. the cock crew,

  567. and then this is the amazing part.

  568. And the Lord turned

  569. and looked upon Peter.

  570. They saw each other.

  571. They locked eyes.

  572. Now watch what Peter does.

  573. Peter remembered the word of the Lord,

  574. how just a few hours before,

  575. he had said unto him,

  576. before the cock crow,

  577. thou shalt deny me three times.

  578. And Peter went out

  579. and wept bitterly.

  580. There's clearly a difference

  581. between Judas's betrayal of Jesus

  582. and Peter's denial of Jesus.

  583. So there may be a time in your life

  584. where maybe you're in the midst

  585. of a struggle right now,

  586. or maybe there will come one ahead of you

  587. where you will face persecution

  588. and ridicule

  589. and suffer in some way for your faith.

  590. And in that moment,

  591. you may be tempted

  592. to deny that faith

  593. or to pass it off

  594. or to not stand firm on sound doctrine,

  595. to not pursue offensively

  596. proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  597. That time may come,

  598. and it may have already come for you,

  599. that in a moment of weakness,

  600. your faith wavers

  601. and you don't do

  602. what God has told us to do

  603. in proclaiming the faith

  604. and trusting him through it.

  605. But that doesn't mean

  606. that you're not a believer.

  607. What it means

  608. is that you're in a moment of weakness.

  609. And it could be

  610. that you just need

  611. to get on your face

  612. before God like Peter did

  613. and weep bitterly

  614. and repent of this denial.

  615. There's a difference

  616. between a person

  617. that can't suffer

  618. and denies the faith

  619. and leaves it

  620. and a person

  621. who is wearied

  622. in suffering

  623. and falls

  624. in a moment of weakness

  625. but continues

  626. in that faith.

  627. So don't be discouraged

  628. if you've blown it up

  629. to this point.

  630. Forgiveness is offered

  631. to you by Jesus

  632. like it's offered

  633. to anybody else.

  634. Here's the awesome thing

  635. about Peter's narrative.

  636. Jesus dies that next day.

  637. He raises three days later

  638. and then he spends 40 days

  639. and he appears

  640. to various people

  641. in those 40 days.

  642. Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  643. picks back up

  644. with the ascension

  645. of Jesus Christ

  646. after Luke

  647. and then 10 days

  648. after Jesus ascends

  649. Peter in Acts

  650. is preaching

  651. on the day of Pentecost.

  652. He's the one

  653. leading the charge

  654. at that point.

  655. He faithfully

  656. preaches the gospel.

  657. 3,000 people get saved.

  658. The Holy Spirit

  659. has this amazing demonstration

  660. of his power

  661. among all of these people

  662. and even in the face

  663. of that opposition

  664. which he did get

  665. arrested and beaten for.

  666. Even in the face

  667. of that

  668. he didn't care.

  669. He pursued it.

  670. 53 days

  671. after he had denied Christ.

  672. It's only 53 days later.

  673. So he has this moment

  674. of weakness

  675. and just a few days later

  676. God uses him

  677. in a fantastic way.

  678. Where was Judas?

  679. He hung himself.

  680. His life was done.

  681. God still had a purpose

  682. for Peter.

  683. God still has a purpose

  684. for you.

  685. So stand firm now.

  686. Strive together now.

  687. I gotta hurry.

  688. The next thing

  689. that we see here

  690. is that our endurance

  691. produces a particular confidence.

  692. Look at the last phrase

  693. of verse 28

  694. in Philippians 1.

  695. He says

  696. and all of this

  697. comes from God.

  698. The sign produces

  699. a particular confidence

  700. and joy

  701. in the heart

  702. of a believer

  703. that endures suffering

  704. for the gospel.

  705. Our fear

  706. is turned to faith

  707. and our weakness

  708. is turned to strength

  709. when we realize

  710. that God

  711. is in control

  712. and he always

  713. has the last

  714. word.

  715. Paul reminds

  716. these believers

  717. of the fact

  718. that both judgment

  719. and salvation

  720. come from the hand

  721. of God.

  722. The salvation

  723. of those who believe

  724. and the judgment

  725. of those who oppose Christ

  726. are both secured

  727. in his sovereign purposes.

  728. I imagine

  729. that in the midst

  730. of the persecution

  731. of believers

  732. in Philippi

  733. that these Philippians

  734. were tempted

  735. to view that persecution

  736. as a sign

  737. of the superiority

  738. of their opponents.

  739. Think about that.

  740. The intimidation

  741. that they experienced

  742. was driven

  743. as they experienced

  744. this persecution

  745. from a group

  746. of people

  747. that greatly

  748. outnumbered them

  749. that were in control

  750. of every aspect

  751. of their life.

  752. The leadership

  753. of Philippi

  754. wasn't on their team.

  755. I can imagine

  756. that they felt

  757. a lot like Asaph

  758. in Psalm 73

  759. that Jack read

  760. for us

  761. just a little bit ago

  762. and it would have

  763. been easy

  764. for them

  765. to be overcome

  766. with discouragement,

  767. question the faith

  768. that they had professed

  769. and even be in danger

  770. of denying

  771. that gospel

  772. altogether.

  773. What did Asaph

  774. say in Psalm 73?

  775. He said,

  776. my feet had well

  777. nigh slipped

  778. when I saw

  779. the prosperity

  780. of the wicked.

  781. All of these people

  782. that hate you, God,

  783. everything good

  784. happens to them.

  785. They're in control

  786. over me.

  787. They are ruling my life

  788. and I'm ready

  789. to just give up

  790. on all of that.

  791. And he says,

  792. until I went

  793. into the sanctuary

  794. of God,

  795. then understood

  796. I therein.

  797. As he endured,

  798. he was given

  799. the sign

  800. as Paul is talking

  801. about in Philippians

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  802. chapter 1,

  803. he was reminded

  804. of their coming

  805. destruction.

  806. And so when we look

  807. like Asaph did

  808. and like these Philippians

  809. did at the opponents

  810. of the gospel,

  811. we don't look at them

  812. with intimidation,

  813. we look at them

  814. with pity.

  815. They may have

  816. the rule now,

  817. but God ultimately

  818. rules it all.

  819. Their judgment

  820. and our salvation

  821. rests in God's hand,

  822. not in our opponents' hands.

  823. They may get victory

  824. over us now,

  825. but we understand

  826. their end.

  827. Their end,

  828. if they continue

  829. in unbelief,

  830. is one that we are

  831. to pity.

  832. He holds both

  833. our salvation

  834. and their destruction

  835. securely in his hands

  836. so that we can view

  837. our suffering

  838. with confidence

  839. that salvation

  840. belongs to them

  841. that love Jesus

  842. and believe his gospel.

  843. And that reminds me

  844. of that famous hymn

  845. that Martin Luther wrote,

  846. A Mighty Fortress

  847. Is Our God.

  848. You know that hymn?

  849. The fourth verse of it,

  850. it says this,

  851. let goods and kindred go.

  852. Let the things

  853. that you own,

  854. materialism

  855. and the relationships

  856. that you have,

  857. be willing to let

  858. those things go.

  859. This mortal life also.

  860. The body they may kill,

  861. God's truth abideth still.

  862. His kingdom is forever.

  863. So there may come times

  864. in your life

  865. as a believer

  866. that you're up

  867. against opposition

  868. and suffering

  869. for the sake of the gospel,

  870. but it doesn't matter.

  871. Let goods and kindred go.

  872. Let this mortal life go also.

  873. The body they may kill.

  874. They may kill this body

  875. that's gonna die anyways,

  876. but God's kingdom,

  877. it endures forever.

  878. His word will never end.

  879. His promises

  880. will never go away.

  881. And so we can look

  882. at our suffering

  883. despite the trial

  884. and the hardship of it.

  885. We can look at it

  886. with confidence

  887. because we understand

  888. that judgment

  889. and salvation

  890. comes from God.

  891. He gets the last word.

  892. And so long as we are

  893. secured in his hand,

  894. we receive the salvation.

  895. And the sign of that salvation

  896. is our willingness to endure.

  897. So we see the sign

  898. of suffering

  899. or the sign

  900. of the gospel-worthy life.

  901. Real quickly,

  902. let's look at the final thought.

  903. The call of a gospel-worthy life.

  904. The call of a gospel-worthy life.

  905. Look at verse 29 and 30.

  906. The call to salvation

  907. is a call to suffering.

  908. Paul brings these two elements

  909. together in verse 29.

  910. He says that the Christ

  911. that has given you salvation

  912. has also given you

  913. the privilege

  914. to suffer for his sake.

  915. There are those

  916. who purport

  917. gospel of wealth

  918. and prosperity.

  919. They claim that

  920. the truly Christian person

  921. will be evidenced

  922. in blessing and wealth.

  923. But the true gospel says

  924. that the genuinely Christian person

  925. will be evidenced

  926. in endurance

  927. through suffering.

  928. Jesus called for this mindset often.

  929. Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  930. he said,

  931. if anyone would come after me,

  932. let him deny himself.

  933. Not seek prosperity,

  934. but deny himself.

  935. And take up his cross

  936. and follow me.

  937. For whosoever would save his life

  938. will lose it.

  939. But whoever loses his life

  940. for my sake

  941. and the gospels

  942. will save it,

  943. Jesus says.

  944. Taking up your cross there

  945. is not the presence of hardship.

  946. Bearing your cross

  947. is an identification with Christ.

  948. identifying with him

  949. even to the point of death

  950. is what it means.

  951. Two things.

  952. There's the guarantee of suffering.

  953. The guarantee of suffering.

  954. Paul didn't tell the Philippians

  955. that they might suffer

  956. for the gospel.

  957. He said that it has been granted to them.

  958. It's been given to them

  959. to suffer for the gospel.

  960. It's a guarantee for every believer

  961. in some form or fashion.

  962. The degree of suffering

  963. will be varied

  964. based on God's purposes

  965. for each individual.

  966. But we will all suffer in some way.

  967. Paul says in verse 30

  968. that they would have

  969. the same conflict

  970. which they saw in him

  971. and now here to be in him.

  972. Well, we understand what that is.

  973. What they saw in him

  974. was that he was stripped naked

  975. in the middle of town.

  976. He was beaten nearly to death

  977. and thrown into prison.

  978. And now they know

  979. that what they have heard of him

  980. is that he spent

  981. the last four years in prison

  982. and that what awaits him

  983. is a verdict

  984. that could end up in him

  985. being beheaded for his faith.

  986. What Paul is saying

  987. to these Philippian believers,

  988. he's not saying

  989. that you will experience suffering

  990. in the same way that I am.

  991. He's not saying

  992. that they're probably

  993. going to take you

  994. before the town

  995. and they're going to beat you to death

  996. and throw you into prison.

  997. He's not saying

  998. that you're going to probably

  999. spend four years in prison

  1000. and ultimately be executed.

1001. That was possible for them

1002. but that's not what he meant.

  1003. What he meant

  1004. is that whatever form

  1005. of persecution you face,

  1006. whatever degree of suffering

  1007. that you experience

1008. will be because you have fought

1009. the same fight as me.

1010. Having the same conflict as me,

  1011. it means fight.

1012. That as you pursue the gospel

1013. the way that I am,

1014. you're probably going to suffer

  1015. in some way.

1016. It may not look like

  1017. my suffering looks

1018. but as long as you're preaching

  1019. the gospel,

  1020. there will be those

  1021. that oppose you.

  1022. There's a guarantee of it.

1023. He wrote that to Timothy.

  1024. He said,

  1025. indeed,

  1026. all who desire

1027. to live a godly life

  1028. in Christ Jesus

  1029. will be persecuted.

1030. You might have a family member

1031. that doesn't want to have

1032. much to do with you anymore

  1033. because of your stand

  1034. on the gospel.

1035. That happens to a lot

  1036. of Christians today

  1037. and that's painful.

1038. You may get passed over

  1039. for a promotion

  1040. that you deserve

  1041. over everybody else

  1042. not because somebody

  1043. thinks you're unworthy

1044. but they just can't stand

  1045. the fact that you're a Christian

1046. and you talk about it

  1047. and they've already

1048. got a bias about you

  1049. and they're never

1050. going to hand you something

  1051. unless they're forced to.

  1052. You understand that

  1053. to be the case.

1054. You may have a spouse

  1055. that leaves you.

  1056. Paul talked about that

  1057. to the Corinthian church.

  1058. He referenced the reality

  1059. that some spouses leave

  1060. specifically because of this.

1061. We know people like that.

1062. I've pastored people like that.

  1063. We all will suffer

  1064. in a different way

  1065. but the reality is

  1066. that we will suffer

  1067. in some way.

  1068. There's the guarantee

  1069. of suffering.

1070. There's also the grace of it.

  1071. What's translated

  1072. as given or granted

  1073. in verse 29

1074. can literally be rendered graced

  1075. because it means

  1076. to give freely

  1077. or graciously

  1078. as a favor.

1079. The idea here is that

  1080. not only is suffering

  1081. for the gospel guarantee

  1082. it's a privilege.

  1083. It's not pleasant

1084. but it is a privilege

  1085. to suffer for Christ.

1086. And we see this often

  1087. in the Bible.

  1088. Peter and John

  1089. after being beaten

  1090. in Acts chapter 5

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  1091. threatened

  1092. by the Sanhedrin

  1093. for preaching the gospel

  1094. verse 41 says

  1095. they rejoiced

  1096. that they were counted

  1097. worthy

  1098. to suffer shame

  1099. for his name.

  1100. Paul will say later

  1101. in chapter 3

  1102. of Philippians

  1103. that his desire

  1104. was to share

  1105. in Christ's suffering.

  1106. Peter instructed

  1107. in his first epistle

  1108. in chapter 4

  1109. he said

  1110. beloved

  1111. do not be surprised

  1112. at the fiery trial

1113. which it comes upon you

  1114. to test you

  1115. as though something strange

  1116. were happening to you

  1117. but rejoice

  1118. in so far

  1119. as you share

  1120. Christ's sufferings

  1121. that you may also

  1122. rejoice

  1123. and be glad

  1124. when his glory

  1125. is revealed

  1126. when his glory

  1127. is demonstrated

  1128. in you

  1129. in your endurance.

  1130. If you are insulted

  1131. for the name

  1132. of Christ

  1133. you are blessed

  1134. because the spirit

  1135. of glory

  1136. and of God

  1137. rests upon you.

  1138. We're not to seek

  1139. suffering

  1140. like some kind

  1141. of psychopath

  1142. but whenever

  1143. it comes time

1144. we are to view it

  1145. as a privilege

  1146. to do so

  1147. for Christ.

  1148. That's really

  1149. the heart

  1150. of the gospel

  1151. worthy life.

  1152. As Paul turns

  1153. his attention

  1154. now

  1155. to

  1156. his instruction

  1157. to these people

  1158. as a pastor

  1159. he's concerned

  1160. that

  1161. they don't get

  1162. discouraged

  1163. in their persecution

  1164. but that

  1165. they live their life

  1166. worthy of Christ

  1167. that they stand firm

  1168. that they proclaim

  1169. the gospel

  1170. that they don't fear

  1171. and that they would

1172. count it as a privilege

  1173. when that suffering

  1174. and that persecution

  1175. does actually come.

  1176. And that's

  1177. my hope

  1178. for each of us

  1179. that we'd be willing

  1180. to do the same

  1181. so that as we

  1182. desire

  1183. to become

  1184. an instrument

  1185. in God's hand

  1186. for bringing

  1187. people to Christ

  1188. here in Cornelius

  1189. and Davidson

  1190. and Huntersville

  1191. that's why we've

  1192. started our church

  1193. we want to worship

  1194. the Lord

1195. and we have a mission

  1196. we want to see

  1197. people saved.

  1198. That means we're

  1199. going to have to

  1200. tell them the gospel

  1201. and that means

  1202. not everybody's

  1203. going to be excited

  1204. about that.

  1205. but let's

  1206. pursue it anyways

  1207. and if we face

  1208. suffering for that

  1209. let's rejoice

  1210. in the fact

  1211. that God

  1212. has counted us

  1213. worthy

  1214. to suffer

  1215. for his sake.
