  7. Verse number one, finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord.

  8. To write the same things to you, to me it is not grievous, but for you it is safe.

  9. Beware of dogs.

  10. I appreciate those warnings.

  11. Dogs, that's helpful if you've ever been out canvassing in a neighborhood

  12. and you come across a house that has a beware of dog sign.

  13. I appreciate their warning that they give.

  14. Paul here says, beware of dogs.

  15. He's not talking about the dogs when you're out canvassing a neighborhood.

  16. He's talking about a different kind of dog.

  17. Beware of evil workers.

  18. Beware of the concision.

  19. For we are the true circumcision, which worship God in the spirit

  20. and rejoice in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh.

  21. Well, if there was ever a proof that Paul was indeed a Christian preacher,

  22. it's found as he uses the word finally here when he's only halfway through his sermon to the Philippian church.

  23. In fact, it reminds me of the boy that was in church and the preacher was typically very long

  24. and he had gotten to a point in his sermon where he had used this word finally.

  25. And so the little boy looks at his father and he whispers and he says,

  26. what does the preacher mean when he says finally?

  27. To which his father quickly replies, absolutely nothing, son.

  28. Absolutely nothing.

  29. It doesn't mean anything.

  30. And of course, those of us like me that struggle with brevity can perhaps claim apostolic authority

  31. when we come to this part in our study.

  32. And we say, well, Paul said finally, had two chapters left in the letter.

  33. I can say finally and carry on for another 20 or 25 minutes.

  34. And at least Paul did it.

  35. Surely we can set that precedent as well.

  36. Well, the truth is that finally here is not used as a signal of conclusion,

  37. but it's actually a means of making a transition.

  38. From what I've read about this actually specific word is that it was the typical usage of it in Greek

  39. as a form of transition and not actually as a form of conclusion.

  40. A proper equivalent for us in our English language would be moreover or maybe so then

  41. so that when we come to this part of Philippians 3, we could really read it as,

  42. moreover, brethren, rejoice in the Lord, or so then, brethren, rejoice in the Lord.

  43. Now, the reason I make the note of its use here is because it helps us to understand this division of Paul's letter.

  44. In the 22 verses between the first verse of chapter 3 and the first verse of chapter 4,

  45. the apostle provides a general discussion for us on what it means to be a true Christian.

  46. Now, chapter 3 is not dependent on any other portions of the letter of Philippians.

  47. That's why we highlight this word finally as a transitioning point.

  48. Nothing about what we'll study in the next few weeks in chapter 3,

  49. there will be no point that we have to refer back to chapters 1 and chapter 2

  50. in order to understand what Paul is saying here.

  51. There's also no point of chapter 3 that we have to look ahead to the end of the letter

  52. to better understand where he's going.

  53. This section of the letter really stands on its own.

  54. Now, if you're an unbeliever or you haven't come to faith in Christ yet,

  55. or maybe you're new to Christianity in the Bible,

  56. the first thing I want you to know is that I'm glad you're here.

  57. You are welcome here.

  58. For as long as you want to be here, we want you here.

  59. But you'll probably find that these verses, as I read through them a moment ago,

  60. are somewhat enigmatic.

  61. And the reason for that is because the most basic tenets of the gospel,

  62. the good news of Jesus Christ, are assumed in this text, not explicitly stated.

  63. Now, this is made clear for us in verse number 1,

  64. when Paul uses the word or the phrase, my brethren.

  65. Would you look at that with me again?

  66. He says, finally, that's his transition into this section.

  67. And then he refers to his audience as my brethren.

  68. Now, we know this to be a common identification among Christians

  69. when we refer to one another as brothers and sisters in Christ,

  70. as being true children of God.

  71. Now, we know that as we study the Bible,

  72. this was also a common reference that Jews would have for one another,

  73. for those that belong nationally to the nation of Israel.

  74. There's no reason for us to think that that was Paul's intention here

  75. because he's writing to a group of believers in Philippi,

  76. which was a pagan city.

  77. It was a Roman colony.

  78. And while there were Jewish converts present in the congregation here,

  79. it was mostly made up of Gentiles, Gentiles that had come to know Christ.

  80. So when Paul references my brethren,

  81. he's referring to people that already know the basic tenets of the gospel.

  82. It would be unnecessary for him to talk about salvation

  83. in the same way to these believers that he would talking of salvation

  84. if his audience was primarily made up of unbelievers.

  85. So there may be a bit of confusion as an unbeliever as you come to these verses,

  86. but the gospel is certainly present.

  87. And if you'll stick with us as we go through this study

  88. over the next four or five Sundays,

  89. I think you'll come to understand it clearly in this chapter.

  90. Now, the occasion for Paul's writing here

  91. is on the basis of his anticipation

  92. that the church would soon face an onslaught of false teaching.

  93. Running alongside the teaching of salvation in the chapter

  94. is this secondary thread of a false gospel

  95. and of a false Christian.

  96. And it's for this reason that these verses are bookended

  97. with the phrase, in the Lord.

  98. In verse number one of chapter three,

  99. Paul says, rejoice in the Lord.

  100. Now, he's commanded many times in this book already

  101. that these Philippian believers take joy in something or rejoice.

  102. This is the only time that he uses it in this phrase

  103. where he says, rejoice in the Lord.

  104. And then when you get to the first verse of chapter four,

  105. when he brings conclusion, look at it there.

  106. He says, now therefore, brethren, stand fast in the Lord.

  107. Stand firm in the Lord.

  108. So at the very beginning, he says,

  109. rejoice not in your own goodness

  110. as the false teachers would do,

  111. but rejoice rather in the power of Christ in your life

  112. to provide the righteousness necessary

  113. through his work in order to be saved.

  114. And then at the conclusion of all of this,

  115. he says, now remember, stand fast in the Lord.

  116. Rejoice in him,

  117. but then stand fast in this truth of the true gospel.

  118. It was a faithful reminder

  119. that the believer's confidence is found solely

  120. in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,

  121. plus or minus nothing else.

  122. And you'll see that become a reality

  123. as we continue to study.

  124. Now, while this passage can be enigmatic for some people,

  125. if you are a seasoned believer,

  126. you may find it to be somewhat redundant and unnecessary.

  127. So Paul, anticipating that response

  128. on the part of the Philippians,

  129. tells us in verse one

  130. that it is not grievous for him

  131. to write the same things to them,

  132. but it is rather a safeguard for them.

  133. It's Paul's way of saying,

  134. rehearsing the basics of the faith,

  135. practicing the fundamentals of the faith,

  136. is necessary and profitable.

  137. Though you've heard the gospel preached

  138. a million times in your life,

  139. it is profitable and helpful

  140. to hear it preached again.

  141. And Paul says,

  142. so for me to write these things to you again,

  143. I know I've preached it to you a hundred times,

  144. and I know I've written it to you

  145. maybe on other occasions,

  146. and I know I've sent Timothy,

  147. and I've sent Epaphroditus with the same message,

  148. but it's not a problem for me to say it again,

  149. because for you, it's a safeguard.

  150. There's a tremendous safety

  151. in coming back to the fundamentals of the gospel

  152. time and time again,

  153. because the gospel is the foundation

  154. of everything in the Christian life.

  155. When we begin to lose sight of the basics,

  156. we will inevitably find ourselves

  157. in danger of falling away from the faith

  158. and actually following a lie.

  159. And so Paul says,

  160. I'm gonna write the same things to you again,

  161. and it's not a problem for me,

  162. and it is not anything but a safeguard for you.

  163. Now, anyone that has spent much time

  164. playing organized sports

  165. understands the concept

  166. of rehearsing the fundamentals.

  167. It's not only those that are just learning the game

  168. that are in need of mastering the basics of the sport,

  169. but even the most seasoned athletes

  170. must continue in the fundamentals

  171. if they are to succeed.

  172. Now, if athletics is not your favorite illustration to use,

  173. perhaps you'll remember and recall the days

  174. of learning the elementary principles

  175. of reading, writing, and arithmetic.

  176. Maybe all of those hours spent reciting

  177. multiplication tables and diagramming sentences

  178. are instrumental in one's ability to function

  179. in the more complex systems of life as an adult.

  180. In fact, even as adults,

  181. we find ourselves often referencing back

  182. to some of those elementary things of education

  183. that we learned in kindergarten and first grade

  184. and second grade and third grade

  185. in order for us to succeed in various ways now.

  186. It's important.

  187. So that's a warning for those of you in elementary school.

  188. Pay attention to your teacher.

  189. It will pay off for you in the long run.

  190. You say, what's really the best way to spot a counterfeit?

  191. Paul's dealing with counterfeits here in this chapter.

  192. He's dealing with a false Christian.

  193. And he says, the best way to identify a false Christian

  194. is to be overwhelmingly familiar with the truth.

  195. If you only have a surface knowledge of the gospel,

  196. it won't be much for you to be deceived by a false gospel.

  197. But the more you come back to the fundamentals of the faith,

  198. the more you come back to the basics of the gospel,

  199. the more familiar you are with the foundation

  200. of the Christian life,

  201. the more easy it will be for you to point out deception

  202. and to see it when it's coming.

  203. And so Paul felt that it was necessary

  204. to call the church back to this again.

  205. Now he opens by directly confronting

  206. the threatening false gospel in verse two.

  207. And then in verse three,

  208. he states what are the clear marks of a true Christian.

  209. We'll only get to the first one today.

  210. We'll come back and we'll finish it in verse three next Sunday.

  211. But let's look at least at verse number two,

  212. where we see a warning against false teaching,

  213. a warning against false teaching.

  214. Look with me again at verse two.

  215. Paul says, beware of dogs,

  216. beware of evil workers,

  217. beware of the concision.

  218. To tell us what a true Christian is.

  219. Paul starts by telling us what a true Christian is not.

  220. And he does this by exposing a group of people

  221. that took on the label of Christianity,

  222. but were actually teaching a false gospel.

  223. And his command for the church was to beware.

  224. It means to watch out for or to look out.

  225. It was a warning for the church to take initiative

  226. in watching closely for those that would deceive them

  227. with a false gospel.

  228. And it's not unlike Peter's command to us

  229. in first Peter five, eight,

  230. a verse we're mostly familiar with.

  231. Remember what Peter said?

  232. He said, be sober,

  233. sober, which means serious minded, grave,

  234. take serious the command that I'm about to give you.

  235. And he says, be sober, be vigilant or watchful.

  236. So continuously watching,

  237. taking serious the threat that's against you.

  238. And then Peter says, here's the threat.

  239. Our enemy, Satan, walks about as a roaring lion,

  240. seeking whom he may devour.

  241. Now the problem with false teaching,

  242. the reason it's so dangerous

  243. is because it always has the appearance

  244. of being something that's good and helpful.

  245. I remember a few years ago around Halloween,

  246. parents being encouraged to carefully inspect the candy

  247. and the items that their children would get

  248. in their bags at trick or treating.

  249. But I'm sure it's a matter of second nature now,

  250. but I remember when there was a time

  251. you wouldn't think much about that

  252. and parents were being warned to do this.

  253. The reason they were being warned

  254. is because there were people

  255. that were taking apples and oranges,

  256. they were dropping it in these kids' bags,

  257. but before they did it,

  258. they were inserting razor blades.

  259. And so that a kid would pull out an apple

  260. out of his bag

  261. and he would see this nice healthy thing,

  262. this good thing,

  263. and at least compared to everything

  264. that was around it in the bag.

  265. And he takes a bite out of it

  266. only to have his mouth cut to pieces.

  267. And some people thought this was fun.

  268. And on the outside, it looked like it was good.

  269. It looked like it was right.

  270. And it looked like it was healthy.

  271. But upon indulging in it,

  272. it come to find out it was actually deadly.

  273. It was destructive.

  274. And that's exactly what false teaching is.

  275. It looks good.

  276. It may even sound reasonable on the outside.

  277. But when you indulge,

  278. you find out that it's actually very dangerous

  279. and destructive and even spiritually deadly.

  280. Sometimes false teaching even takes on

  281. the very label of being Christian.

  282. But it's actually just a cheap invitation.

  283. Julie and I,

  284. one of our favorite places to go is New York City.

  285. We enjoy it.

  286. We have friends there.

  287. And for years and years and years,

  288. we've gone to New York and enjoyed our time there.

  289. Julie's favorite place in all of New York City

  290. is not Times Square.

  291. And it's not the Statue of Liberty.

  292. And it's not the Freedom Tower.

  293. And it's not all of that.

  294. Her favorite place is Chinatown.

  295. That's what she loves.

  296. Not only,

  297. anybody been to Chinatown in New York City?

  298. Not only is the food fantastic,

  299. but there's all of these little shops

  300. where you can go in

  301. and you can negotiate with the shop owners

  302. and you can try to get a really good deal

  303. on an imitation purse.

  304. So if you really want a coach purse,

  305. but you don't want to drop 300 bucks on it,

  306. you can get one for 30 bucks

  307. that looks just like the real one.

  308. And you can kind of negotiate with them.

  309. And so Julie loves it.

  310. She loves doing that.

  311. So she loves going to Chinatown

  312. and try to find these deals.

  313. And I remember one time when we were in college,

  314. I had, in being naive,

  315. I had gone to this shop

  316. and they had had a bottle of cologne that I liked.

  317. Aqua De Joe by Giorgio Armani

  318. was my scent of the day.

  319. And they had this bottle

  320. and it was like super cheap.

  321. It may have cost like 60 or 70 bucks at Belk's,

  322. but in Chinatown, it was like $15.

  323. And I'm like, this is crazy.

  324. So I bought the cologne.

  325. It had the exact packaging

  326. of what I would get at Macy's.

  327. Same exact, same box, same label, same barcodes.

  328. It was wrapped the same way.

  329. You pull the bottle out.

  330. It was the exact same bottle

  331. that looked like all the other bottles

  332. that would have been on my shelf

  333. in my college dorm room.

  334. But when I went to spray it,

  335. it was actually window cleaner.

  336. And I was embarrassed by that.

  337. I can't believe I fell for it, right?

  338. It's one thing to get a cheap imitation purse

  339. when you know it's a cheap imitation.

  340. It's another thing to buy a bottle of cologne

  341. and you think it's the real thing

  342. because it looks like the real thing.

  343. And it even says that it's the real thing.

  344. But when you get into it,

  345. it's actually just a cheap imitation.

  346. And that's exactly what false teaching is.

  347. There are many, many, many false gospels

  348. that say they are Christian.

  349. But when you dig in,

  350. it's actually just a cheap imitation.

  351. Some of them will even go so far

  352. as to not just say that they're Christian,

  353. but they are a conservative,

  354. evangelical, gospel-preaching Christian.

  355. And they will take on this label,

  356. but really when you dig in,

  357. it's a false gospel.

  358. It's a cheap imitation.

  359. And it's deadly and it's dangerous.

  360. And Paul says of these false teachers,

  361. of these false gospels, beware.

  362. The Bible consistently warns us about false teaching.

  363. I don't think there's a single letter

  364. in the New Testament

  365. that doesn't address it in some way.

  366. Paul warns the elders in Ephesus in Acts chapter 20

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  367. to be watchful and to even expect these dangerous liars.

  368. Here's what he said to them upon his departure.

  369. He said, I know this, that after I depart,

  370. grievous wolves are gonna enter in among you,

  371. not sparing the flock.

  372. And then he says, even from among yourselves,

  373. even from among you as elders of the church of Ephesus,

  374. men will rise speaking perverse things

  375. to draw away disciples after them.

  376. And then he says, therefore, watch and remember

  377. that by the space of three years,

  378. I cease not to warn you day and night.

  379. And I did it passionately with tears.

  380. It was a strong warning.

  381. And it wasn't a warning of potential.

  382. It was a warning of expectation.

  383. This will happen, church.

  384. This will happen to you, church.

  385. This is not a matter of potential

  386. in Lakeside Bible Church.

  387. This is a matter of expectation

  388. in Lakeside Bible Church.

  389. So beware and be on the lookout.

  390. Watch out for the deception.

  391. Jesus compared false teachers to ravaging wolves as well.

  392. In Matthew chapter seven and verse 15, he says,

  393. beware of false prophets,

  394. which come to you in sheep's clothing.

  395. But inwardly, they are ravening wolves.

  396. And then using a parable in Matthew chapter 13,

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  397. Jesus thought that every time God does a true work,

  398. Satan then produces a counterfeit to deceive us.

  399. You say, well, I hear all these warnings

  400. and everybody's saying that you never know

  401. and it could be a deceptive labeling

  402. like the cologne in Chinatown

  403. and it could be something that looks good

  404. like the apple or the orange in the trick-or-treat bag.

  405. So how in the world am I supposed to know

  406. what's true and what's real

  407. and what's not true and what's not real?

  408. And the answer to that question

  409. is you don't take my word for it.

  410. And you don't take your friend's word for it

  411. no matter how reasonable it may sound,

  412. no matter how attractive

  413. the purporting of their gospel seems.

  414. You don't take their word for it.

  415. You wanna know what's true and what's false?

  416. Go to the Bible yourself.

  417. Study the Bible.

  418. The Bible is absolute truth.

  419. You don't need me to tell you what truth is.

  420. You can go to it yourself

  421. and read it chapter by chapter and verse by verse

  422. and what you'll find is everything

  423. that you need to know about truth and error is there.

  424. So when you come to church on Sunday,

  425. I hope that you'll trust me.

  426. But don't just take my word for it.

  427. Get in the word yourself.

  428. The Bible tells us that as we study the Bible

  429. and as we study the word,

  430. we have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit

  431. as believers that does this work of enlightenment.

  432. It helps us to understand.

  433. And as we study the Bible,

  434. we only come to understand it better and better.

  435. And so Paul says,

  436. I'm rehearsing all of this to you

  437. because in order for you to see the truth

  438. and acknowledge the error,

  439. you're gonna have to be familiar with the truth.

  440. But don't take my word for it.

  441. Read the scripture yourself.

  442. There are many forms of false teaching

  443. that Paul dealt with.

  444. But here he's speaking about a specific group of deceivers

  445. known as Judaizers.

  446. These people plagued the early church

  447. in fact, most of what Paul deals with

  448. in his letter to the Galatian churches

  449. had to do with these Judaizers

  450. and their false gospel.

  451. No sooner than Paul would leave town,

  452. the Judaizers would begin to infiltrate the church.

  453. They claimed to be Christians

  454. and they even believed that Jesus was truly God.

  455. They believed that he did die and rose again.

  456. But they insisted that true salvation

  457. only came to the believers

  458. that would submit themselves

  459. to the ceremonial rituals of the Old Testament.

  460. You can see where their gospel would be attractive.

  461. They'd come into town and they'd say,

  462. yes, Jesus is God.

  463. We believe him.

  464. Yes, he died for sins.

  465. We believe that.

  466. Yes, he rose from the dead.

  467. We believe that.

  468. But he is not enough.

  469. You must also obey the law.

  470. You must also follow circumcision

  471. and the dietary restrictions

  472. and all the other ceremonial riches

  473. of the Old Testament.

  474. They had a particular fixation

  475. on the Jewish practice of circumcision,

  476. which is why Paul uses the language here that he uses.

  477. It's also how we come to find out

  478. exactly who he's talking about here in this chapter.

  479. It's not that they taught that Jesus was bad.

  480. The problem is that they taught

  481. that Jesus was not enough.

  482. And any gospel that claims to know Jesus

  483. and believe Jesus,

  484. but doesn't quite believe that Jesus on his own is enough

  485. is a false gospel.

  486. Those are not true Christians.

  487. They are false Christians.

  488. They are planted there by Satan

  489. to be a deception to you

  490. and a deception to the church

  491. and to say perverse things,

  492. as Paul said,

  493. to lead true disciples away from the faith.

  494. To them, Jesus was only a piece of the puzzle

  495. that was made complete

  496. by their system of religious works and morality.

  497. And it's of this group

  498. that Paul emphatically warns the Philippian church

  499. to beware.

  500. The truth is there's only two real forms

  501. of religion that exist.

  502. There's the religion of God's grace

  503. and the religion of man's works.

  504. Beware of any religion

  505. that will tell you that faith

  506. in Jesus Christ alone is not enough.

  507. Church, beware of any religion

  508. or any so-called Christian

  509. that will tell you Jesus is not enough.

  510. In order to truly be saved,

  511. you must also be baptized.

  512. That's a lie.

  513. That's a false gospel.

  514. Beware of any so-called Christian

  515. that will come through

  516. and say that Jesus is great,

  517. we worship Jesus,

  518. but you must also say a series of rote prayers

  519. or pray through the rosary

  520. or pray to a certain amount of saints

  521. or light a certain amount of candles

  522. or give a certain amount of money.

  523. That's not a true gospel.

  524. It's a cheap imitation

  525. and it will only lead you to destruction.

  526. It will not lead you to the glorious future

  527. that awaits true believers.

  528. Beware of the deceivers

  529. that will insist that true salvation

  530. only comes to those

  531. who have some kind of supernatural experience

  532. that reveals itself

  533. in a charismatic way

  534. through speaking in tongues

  535. or being slain in the spirit.

  536. That is not true.

  537. It's a false gospel.

  538. That's not in the scriptures.

  539. Salvation is by grace

  540. through faith in Christ alone.

  541. Nothing else.

  542. So beware the people

  543. that will try to say,

  544. yeah, I believe Jesus.

  545. Yeah, I trust Jesus.

  546. Yeah, I believe he rose from the dead.

  547. Yeah, I'm a Christian,

  548. but I just think that there is a little more to it.

  549. Beware.

  550. That's not a true Christian.

  551. That's a false Christian.

  552. Don't buy the lie.

  553. Evangelize that person.

  554. Don't capitulate to their error.

  555. Beware.

  556. Beware.

  557. Of anyone that will tell you

  558. that salvation only comes

  559. after you clean your life up too.

  560. And that if you dress a certain way,

  561. and that if you listen only to the best music,

  562. and that if you only do all of these things,

  563. beware, beware.

  564. Salvation is not of works.

  565. The danger of that kind of false teaching

  566. is that it mingles its lies

  567. with a portion of the truth.

  568. And if it's not a whole truth,

  569. it's not truth at all.

  570. The truth of the gospel

  571. is that salvation is found in Christ alone.

  572. You cannot have Christ plus something else.

  573. True salvation is not about Christ plus baptism

  574. or Christ plus anything else.

  575. True salvation is in Christ.

  576. And to add anything else to it

  577. is to pervert that gospel,

  578. and it is not true saving faith.

  579. The Bible is clear.

  580. True saving faith is only in Christ.

  581. And when you add something else to it,

  582. you purport a false gospel

  583. that says Christ is not enough.

  584. And therefore, what you have

  585. is an intellectual knowledge of Christ,

  586. but you have not experienced

  587. the true experiential knowledge of Christ

  588. that only comes by faith in him alone.

  589. It's for this reason that

  590. the great reformers of the Protestant Reformation

  591. gave us the five solas of the Reformation.

  592. Do you know what they are?

  593. I've got them on the screen for you.

  594. I want you to see them.

  595. This would be so helpful for you

  596. to memorize and rehearse to yourself,

  597. to display in your office,

  598. or something along with other passages of Scripture.

  599. Here's what their five solas were.

  600. The first one was sola gratia,

  601. which is grace alone.

  602. The second one was sola fide,

  603. which is faith alone.

  604. The third was solus Christus,

  605. which is Christ alone.

  606. The fourth was sola scriptura,

  607. which is Scripture alone.

  608. And the last one was sola deo gloria,

  609. to the glory of God alone.

  610. In other words,

  611. we are saved by grace alone,

  612. through faith alone,

  613. in Christ alone,

  614. according to the Scriptures alone,

  615. to the glory of God alone.

  616. That's the truth.

  617. And in a period of time

  618. when there was tremendous error

  619. that had pervaded the Christian realm

  620. in the 1600s,

  621. the great reformers

  622. who ultimately lost their lives,

  623. many of them,

  624. in order to recover the truth among the church,

  625. purported this,

  626. and it's helpful for us.

  627. Grace alone,

  628. faith alone,

  629. Christ alone,

  630. the Bible alone,

  631. to the glory of God alone.

  632. Well, what did Paul actually have to say

  633. about these Judaizers?

  634. Verse two,

  635. he gives three specific warnings,

  636. each with a very direct

  637. and confrontational dynamic.

  638. There are portions of Scripture

  639. where Paul seems to be

  640. a very meek individual,

  641. and there's no doubt that he was.

  642. But Paul did not mince words

  643. when it came to false teachers.

  644. He didn't back down.

  645. The reason is

  646. because their lies

  647. were leading people

  648. to hell.

  649. And any false gospel

  650. that leads people to hell

  651. is not worth

  652. our tolerance

  653. and cordiality.

  654. It is worth

  655. our bold stand

  656. against it.

  657. And we must preach against him.

  658. And that's what Paul does here.

  659. Three quick warnings

  660. that he gives.

  661. The first one is he says,

  662. beware of dogs.

  663. Beware of the dogs.

  664. Now, this wasn't a reference

  665. to a household pet.

  666. By the way,

  667. if you would like a household pet,

  668. I'd love to give you one.

  669. Dogs weren't domesticated pets

  670. for the most part

  671. in the time

  672. of the Bible writings.

  673. They were actually

  674. vicious scavengers

  675. that roamed in packs.

  676. They carried disease.

  677. And a bite from one

  678. could actually result

  679. in serious illness,

  680. even death in those days

  681. because they certainly

  682. didn't have the medical treatment

  683. that we have now.

  684. They were dangerous.

  685. And it was to these

  686. dangerous predatory animals

  687. that Paul likened

  688. the false teachers

  689. of the Judaizers.

  690. They were just as dangerous

  691. and vicious.

  692. They were full

  693. of spiritual disease.

  694. And a bite from their theology

  695. was damning.

  696. And so he says,

  697. beware of the dogs.

  698. This was also

  699. a favorite insult

  700. of the Judaizers

  701. toward the Gentiles.

  702. Because dogs

  703. were unclean animals,

  704. the Jews regularly

  705. referred to non-Jews

  706. as unclean dogs.

  707. Now, to be unclean

  708. in the Old Testament

  709. was significant.

  710. It meant that

  711. an individual

  712. could not belong

  713. to the covenant

  714. community of Israel.

  715. And it also meant

  716. that in uncleanness,

  717. an individual

  718. could not participate

  719. in the ceremonial practices

  720. of worship.

  721. If an individual

  722. was out in the field

  723. and he touched

  724. the dead carcass

  725. of an animal,

  726. he would have to go

  727. through a series

  728. of ritual baths

  729. before he could actually

  730. go to the temple

  731. for or tabernacle

  732. for worship.

  733. God took cleanness

  734. seriously.

  735. Not because cleanness

  736. earned salvation,

  737. but because it represented

  738. his own holiness.

  739. It was a sign

  740. to God's people

  741. that to truly be mine,

  742. you desperately need

  743. cleansing

  744. because you are filthy

  745. with sin.

  746. And what they anticipated

  747. in their faith

  748. is that God

  749. would ultimately

  750. fulfill these ceremonial laws

  751. in a person

  752. that ultimately

  753. would cleanse us

  754. from sin.

  755. That came in Jesus Christ.

  756. But the Jews

  757. took the sign

  758. to be the very means

  759. of salvation.

  760. So they took

  761. cleanness

  762. as a very

  763. serious thing.

  764. The Jews

  765. had come

  766. to give the Gentiles

  767. the insult

  768. of dog

  769. permanently.

  770. So you can imagine

  771. the Judaizers' reaction

  772. when Paul actually

  773. refers to them

  774. as the dogs.

  775. He says,

  776. beware the dogs.

  777. Beware of the unclean

  778. ones,

  779. church.

  780. The second warning

  781. he gives

  782. is that we are

  783. to beware

  784. of evil workers.

  785. Beware of evil workers.

  786. The Judaizers

  787. believed themselves

  788. to be workers

  789. of righteousness.

  790. They took pride

  791. in their efforts

  792. to uphold

  793. the letter of the law.

  794. In fact,

  795. their system

  796. of good works

  797. is what they believed

  798. would actually

  799. provide them

  800. acceptance

  801. with God.

  802. Paul called them

  803. evil workers

  804. instead.

  805. Now imagine

  806. how they would have

  807. accepted that

  808. upon hearing

  809. this letter read.

  810. Imagine your friends

  811. that you know

  812. that you work with

  813. that actually believe

  814. they're going to make

  815. it to heaven

  816. because of all

  817. of the religious

  818. things that they do

  819. and all of the good

  820. things that they do

  821. and all the money

  822. that they give away

  823. and all of the

  824. time volunteering

  825. that they give

  826. and they've been

  827. through the baptism

  828. and they've been

  829. through the Eucharist

  830. and they've been

  831. through the prayers

  832. and they've been

  833. through all the things

  834. that they're supposed

  835. to do.

  836. They can check off

  837. their list.

  838. Imagine when they

  839. consider their works

  840. of righteousness

  841. to find them

  842. acceptance with God.

  843. their good works

  844. and you say

  845. you're actually

  846. an evil worker.

  847. I can imagine

  848. they take too kindly

  849. to that statement.

  850. That's exactly

  851. what Paul's saying.

  852. They think

  853. they're good workers.

  854. They're actually

  855. evil workers.

  856. Any good

  857. that takes away

  858. from the person

  859. and work

  860. of Jesus Christ

  861. is in actuality

  862. evil.

  863. That's exactly

  864. what their teaching

  865. did.

  866. It said

  867. that Christ

  868. was insufficient

  869. for salvation

  870. and it ultimately

  871. rendered his death

  872. and resurrection

  873. as purposeless

  874. and that

  875. is evil.

  876. Though their works

  877. were good

  878. they were actually

  879. evil workers.

  880. Now John MacArthur

  881. helps us here

  882. with our understanding

  883. or at least he

  884. helped me

  885. in describing it

  886. this way.

  887. He talks about

  888. bad bad

  889. and bad good.

  890. Now we all know

  891. what bad bad is

  892. that's when

  893. wicked people

  894. do wicked things

  895. for wicked reasons.

  896. They do bad things

  897. and they do it

  898. for bad reasons.

  899. It's bad bad.

  900. But did you know

  901. that there's a bad good?

  902. Bad good

  903. is when

  904. unbelievers

  905. do good things

  906. for bad reasons.

  907. True goodness

  908. only comes

  909. from the inner working

  910. of God's power

  911. in the heart

  912. of a person.

  913. You cannot

  914. build up

  915. true goodness

  916. on your own.

  917. That comes

  918. through God's work

  919. in you

  920. after salvation.

  921. That's the

  922. sanctifying process

  923. of God's grace.

  924. But good

  925. that is done

  926. out of pride

  927. or for some

  928. kind of recognition

  929. or especially

  930. to try

  931. and earn

  932. salvation

  933. is not

  934. actually good.

  935. It's bad.

  936. bad.

  937. And that's

  938. exactly what

  939. works-based

  940. religion

  941. is.

  942. It's bad

  943. good.

  944. As long

  945. as your

  946. good works

  947. are trying

  948. to earn

  949. salvation,

  950. they are

  951. leading you

  952. to deny

  953. the sufficiency

  954. of Christ

  955. and are

  956. therefore

  957. evil.

  958. Jesus

  959. described these

  960. people in

  961. Matthew chapter

  962. seven.

  963. In fact,

  964. would you turn

  965. there with me?

  966. I'd like for you

  967. to see it.

  968. You're probably

  969. familiar with

  970. the statement,

  971. but I want you

  972. to see it

  973. in Matthew

  974. chapter seven.

  975. Jesus is

  976. dealing with

  977. false teachers.

  978. His dealing

  979. with false

  980. teachers was

  981. the religious

  982. establishment

  983. of the day,

  984. the Pharisees,

  985. the Sadducees,

  986. the scribes,

  987. the teachers

  988. of the law.

  989. And here's

  990. what he says

  991. in verses

  992. 21 to

  993. 23.

  994. Jesus

  995. says,

  996. not everyone

  997. that says

  998. unto me,

  999. Lord,

  1000. Lord,

  1001. shall enter

  1002. into the

  1003. kingdom of

  1004. heaven or

  1005. shall be

  1006. saved,

  1007. but he

  1008. that doeth

  1009. the will

  1010. of my

  1011. father,

  1012. which is

  1013. in heaven.

  1014. Well,

  1015. what's the

  1016. will of

  1017. the father,

  1018. which is

  1019. in heaven?

  1020. Jesus

  1021. clearly said

  1022. the will

  1023. of the

  1024. father is

  1025. that you

  1026. would accept

  1027. the son

  1028. and in

  1029. accepting

  1030. the son,

  1031. you accept

  1032. the father

  1033. and the

  1034. father accepts

  1035. you.

  1036. There's

  1037. nothing else

  1038. to that.

  1039. That's

  1040. the will

  1041. of the

  1042. father.

  1043. But here's

  1044. what he said

  1045. happens in

  1046. verse 22.

  1047. Many will

  1048. say to me

  1049. in that

  1050. day,

  1051. that is

  1052. the day

  1053. of judgment

  1054. when we

  1055. all stand

  1056. before Christ.

  1057. Many will

  1058. say,

  1059. Lord,

  1060. Lord,

  1061. have we

  1062. not

  1063. prophesied

  1064. in thy

  1065. name?

  1066. And in

  1067. thy name

  1068. have cast

  1069. out devils?

  1070. And in

  1071. thy name

  1072. done many

  1073. wonderful

  1074. works?

  1075. And then

  1076. I will

  1077. profess

  1078. unto them,

  1079. I never

  1080. knew

  1081. you.

  1082. Depart

  1083. from me,

  1084. ye that

  1085. work

  1086. what?

  1087. Iniquity,

  1088. evil,

  1089. sin,

  1090. lawlessness.

  1091. Jesus

  1092. said that

  1093. in the

  1094. day of

  1095. judgment,

  1096. many,

  1097. he says,

  1098. many people

  1099. will stand

  1100. before me

  1101. and they

  1102. will acknowledge

  1103. me as

  1104. Lord

  1105. in title.

  1106. And they

  1107. will say,

  1108. Lord,

  1109. Lord,

  1110. do you

  1111. not remember

  1112. that we

  1113. prophesied,

  1114. we preached

  1115. in your

  1116. name,

  1117. Lord.

  1118. We

  1119. cast out

  1120. devils

  1121. in your

  1122. name,

  1123. Lord.

  1124. We

  1125. did many

  1126. wonderful

  1127. works in

  1128. your name,

  1129. Lord.

  1130. And he

  1131. will turn

  1132. to them

  1133. and he

  1134. will say,

  1135. depart from

  1136. me,

  1137. I never

  1138. knew you,

  1139. you are

  1140. an evil

  1141. worker.

  1142. You thought

  1143. all of that

  1144. was good

  1145. works,

  1146. but it was

  1147. actually

  1148. evil because

  1149. your

  1150. prophesying

  1151. and your

  1152. demonstrations

  1153. of power

  1154. and your

  1155. demonstrations

  1156. of good

  1157. works were

  1158. based on

  1159. your own

  1160. righteousness

  1161. as you

  1162. tried to

  1163. achieve

  1164. salvation

  1165. on your

  1166. own.

  1167. And he

  1168. says,

  1169. you're an

  1170. evil worker.

  1171. They will

  1172. even claim

  1173. that their

  1174. works were

  1175. done in

  1176. Jesus'

  1177. name.

  1178. They will

  1179. say they

  1180. are Christian.

  1181. They will

  1182. say they

  1183. believe Jesus,

  1184. but in

  1185. actuality,

  1186. their work

  1187. is evil.

  1188. Finally,

  1189. he says,

  1190. beware of

  1191. the concision.

  1192. Beware of

  1193. the concision.

  1194. That's a

  1195. real finally,

  1196. not a

  1197. transitional

  1198. finally.

  1199. This term

  1200. would have

  1201. really upset

  1202. the Judaizers.

  1203. It's a

  1204. form of

  1205. the word

  1206. that actually

  1207. means

  1208. mutilation

  1209. or the

  1210. word of

  1211. a form

  1212. of

  1213. circumcision

  1214. that actually

  1215. means

  1216. mutilation.

  1217. In fact,

  1218. it's not

  1219. uncommon to

  1220. find these

  1221. verses

  1222. translated

  1223. in English

  1224. as

  1225. mutilators

  1226. of the

  1227. flesh

  1228. or the

  1229. false

  1230. circumcision.

  1231. circumcision.

  1232. Again,

  1233. the Judaizers

  1234. had a

  1235. particular

  1236. fixation

  1237. on

  1238. circumcision.

  1239. And the

  1240. reason is

  1241. because it

  1242. was the

  1243. physical sign

  1244. in the

  1245. Old Testament

  1246. of someone

  1247. belonging to

  1248. God's

  1249. covenant

  1250. people,

  1251. God's

  1252. chosen

  1253. people.

  1254. Now,

  1255. God never

  1256. said that

  1257. circumcision

  1258. was necessary

  1259. for salvation.

  1260. In fact,

  1261. Paul argues

  1262. in the book

  1263. of Romans

  1264. against the

  1265. Jews when

  1266. he says

  1267. that God

  1268. said that

  1269. Abraham

  1270. was justified

  1271. because of

  1272. his faith

  1273. before he

  1274. was ever

  1275. physically

  1276. circumcised.

  1277. It was

  1278. meant to

  1279. be a

  1280. sign.

  1281. It was

  1282. a sign

  1283. of the

  1284. cutting

  1285. away

  1286. of sin

  1287. out of

  1288. the heart

  1289. of an

  1290. individual

  1291. and it

  1292. looked

  1293. forward

  1294. again

  1295. to

  1296. Christ.

  1297. It was

  1298. never

  1299. meant

  1300. to be

  1301. an

  1302. action

  1303. that

  1304. brought

  1305. about

  1306. salvation.

  1307. Rather,

  1308. it was

  1309. a sign

  1310. that pointed

  1311. to those

  1312. that had

  1313. actually

  1314. experienced

  1315. the

  1316. circumcision

  1317. of the

  1318. heart

  1319. as the

  1320. Bible

  1321. calls it.

  1322. The

  1323. transformation

  1324. of the

  1325. heart

  1326. symbolized

  1327. in a

  1328. outward

  1329. sign.

  1330. The

  1331. Jews

  1332. had long

  1333. left

  1334. the

  1335. symbolic

  1336. significance

  1337. of the

  1338. sign

  1339. and taught

  1340. that it

  1341. was necessary

  1342. for salvation.

  1343. So the

  1344. Judaizers

  1345. were telling

  1346. the Gentiles

  1347. that had

  1348. come to

  1349. faith

  1350. in Christ

  1351. that

  1352. Jesus

  1353. is great,

  1354. he's not

  1355. enough

  1356. though,

  1357. in order

  1358. to truly

  1359. be saved

  1360. and be

  1361. a part

  1362. of God's

  1363. chosen

  1364. covenant

  1365. people,

  1366. you must

  1367. also go

  1368. through the

  1369. physical

  1370. rite

  1371. of

  1372. circumcision.

  1373. And so

  1374. when Paul

  1375. references

  1376. this in

  1377. verse 2,

  1378. he means

  1379. to say

  1380. that the

  1381. sign

  1382. is worthless

  1383. without the

  1384. transformation

  1385. of the

  1386. heart

  1387. that comes

  1388. by faith.

  1389. And so

  1390. he references

  1391. the circumcision

  1392. of the

  1393. Judaizers

  1394. as actually

  1395. mutilation

  1396. of the

  1397. flesh.

  1398. Mutilation.

  1399. He said

  1400. without the

  1401. actual working

  1402. of Christ,

  1403. that doesn't

  1404. actually mean

  1405. anything,

  1406. you're just

  1407. mutilating

  1408. your own

  1409. flesh.

  1410. The

  1411. Judaizers

  1412. believed

  1413. that their

  1414. adherence

  1415. to the

  1416. letter of

  1417. the law

  1418. made them

  1419. righteous

  1420. before God,

  1421. but each

  1422. of Paul's

  1423. descriptions

  1424. put them

  1425. in the

  1426. unclean

  1427. category

  1428. of the

  1429. Old

  1430. Testament.

  1431. And it

  1432. meant that

  1433. it was

  1434. actually

  1435. impossible

  1436. for them

  1437. to be

  1438. a part

  1439. of God's

  1440. chosen

  1441. covenant

  1442. people,

  1443. despite

  1444. their

  1445. relationship

  1446. as

  1447. natural

  1448. Israelites.

  1449. That's

  1450. not what

  1451. mattered.

  1452. they were

  1453. actually

  1454. unclean.

  1455. The

  1456. dog

  1457. was an

  1458. Old

  1459. Testament

  1460. term

  1461. for being

  1462. unclean.

  1463. Evil

  1464. workers

  1465. were

  1466. considered

  1467. unclean

  1468. because

  1469. of their

  1470. sinfulness.

  1471. And men

  1472. that had

  1473. specifically

  1474. mutilated

  1475. their bodies

  1476. like the

  1477. prophets

  1478. of Baal

  1479. or the

  1480. eunuchs

  1481. of the

  1482. day

  1483. in pagan

  1484. worship

  1485. were

  1486. considered

  1487. unclean.

  1488. And the

  1489. Old

  1490. Testament

  1491. law

  1492. said

  1493. anyone

  1494. that

  1495. would

  1496. treat

  1497. their

  1498. body

  1499. in that

  1500. way

  1501. was

  1502. excluded

  1503. from

  1504. God's

  1505. covenant

  1506. people.

  1507. So when

  1508. Paul

  1509. says

  1510. this,

  1511. what he

  1512. means is

  1513. that these

  1514. people were

  1515. actually

  1516. unclean

  1517. no matter

  1518. what they

  1519. said

  1520. or taught

  1521. about

  1522. Jesus.

  1523. The

  1524. Judaizers

  1525. thought that

  1526. their religion

  1527. and morality

  1528. made them

  1529. God's

  1530. people,

  1531. but in

  1532. reality it

  1533. made them

  1534. unclean

  1535. and excluded

  1536. from God's

  1537. covenant.

  1538. They

  1539. looked like

  1540. Christians.

  1541. They

  1542. talked a

  1543. lot like

  1544. Christians.

  1545. In a lot

  1546. of ways

  1547. they probably

  1548. behaved

  1549. better

  1550. than the

  1551. pagan

  1552. Christians

  1553. of

  1554. Philippi,

  1555. especially

  1556. the pagan

  1557. Christians

  1558. of

  1559. Corinth.

  1560. But they

  1561. were in

  1562. fact

  1563. unclean.

  1564. And those

  1565. people that

  1566. they hated

  1567. so much,

  1568. the Bible

  1569. tells us,

  1570. were

  1571. clean.

  1572. Of all

  1573. the troubles

  1574. that the

  1575. church in

  1576. Corinth

  1577. had,

  1578. they were

  1579. believers.

  1580. They were

  1581. saved

  1582. people.

  1583. And Paul

  1584. acknowledges

  1585. that a

  1586. number of

  1587. times in

  1588. his letters.

  1589. And he

  1590. rejoices in

  1591. their salvation.

  1592. But they

  1593. were as

  1594. messed up

  1595. sinfully as

  1596. you will

  1597. ever see

  1598. in a

  1599. church.

  1600. And yet

  1601. the pious

  1602. Judaizers

  1603. that kept

  1604. the law

  1605. to a

  1606. tea were

  1607. actually in

  1608. reality

  1609. unsaved

  1610. people.

  1611. Which tells

  1612. us that you

  1613. can be the

  1614. most religious

  1615. person on

  1616. the planet

  1617. and follow

  1618. a moral

  1619. code to

  1620. near

  1621. perfection.

  1622. But if

  1623. that's what

  1624. you're

  1625. counting on

  1626. for salvation,

  1627. you are

  1628. in reality

  1629. unclean.

  1630. The truth

  1631. is that

  1632. Jesus is

  1633. the perfect

  1634. fulfillment

  1635. of those

  1636. Old Testament

  1637. laws and

  1638. symbols.

  1639. Paul wasn't

  1640. being disrespectful

  1641. to the

  1642. Mosaic

  1643. law.

  1644. He was

  1645. preaching the

  1646. truth that

  1647. Jesus Christ

  1648. has provided

  1649. for us

  1650. what the

  1651. law could

  1652. not provide.

  1653. It's

  1654. impossible for

  1655. any of us

  1656. to follow the

  1657. law perfectly

  1658. and bring

  1659. glory to

  1660. God.

  1661. Jesus

  1662. fulfilled that

  1663. law with

  1664. perfection

  1665. and then

  1666. suffered the

  1667. wrath of the

  1668. Father on the

  1669. cross in

  1670. our place.

  1671. He did

  1672. what we

  1673. could not

  1674. do in

  1675. fulfilling

  1676. the law

  1677. and then

  1678. he suffered

  1679. our death

  1680. so that

  1681. his righteousness

  1682. through the

  1683. law could

  1684. be imputed

  1685. by our

  1686. faith.

  1687. And we

  1688. know that

  1689. his sacrifice

  1690. was sufficient

  1691. because three

  1692. days later

  1693. he rose

  1694. from the

  1695. dead.

  1696. The

  1697. wonderful

  1698. truth of

  1699. the gospel

  1700. is that

  1701. you don't

  1702. have to

  1703. fulfill

  1704. all the

  1705. rules and

  1706. follow all

  1707. the codes.

  1708. Christ did

  1709. that for

  1710. you.

  1711. That's

  1712. the good

  1713. news.

  1714. You don't

  1715. have to

  1716. work yourself

  1717. to heaven.

  1718. It's not

  1719. even possible

  1720. for you to

  1721. do it

  1722. anyways.

  1723. Jesus did

  1724. it for

  1725. you and

  1726. not only

  1727. did he

  1728. fulfill that

  1729. law perfectly

  1730. for you but

  1731. then he

  1732. fulfilled the

  1733. prophecy

  1734. perfectly for

  1735. you.

  1736. Then he

  1737. took your

  1738. place.

  1739. He said

  1740. I know

  1741. you can't

  1742. do this.

  1743. You can't

  1744. satisfy God's

  1745. wrath but I

  1746. can and so

  1747. I'm going to

  1748. take your

  1749. place.

  1750. We call it

  1751. propitiation

  1752. in the

  1753. Bible.

  1754. He took

  1755. our place.

  1756. He endured

  1757. God's wrath

  1758. so that we

  1759. could be

  1760. his.

  1761. That's the

  1762. gospel.

  1763. Anything that

  1764. adds to that

  1765. or takes away

  1766. from it is

  1767. not true.

  1768. It is a

  1769. lie.

  1770. Beware.

  1771. Christ has

  1772. done this

  1773. for you.

  1774. You say

  1775. well where does

  1776. the morality

  1777. and the rules

  1778. and the righteousness

  1779. and the holiness

  1780. come into play?

  1781. It doesn't come

  1782. into play for

  1783. your salvation.

  1784. It comes

  1785. into play as a

  1786. result of your

  1787. salvation.

  1788. You don't

  1789. work your way

  1790. to heaven.

  1791. You work

  1792. because you're

  1793. on your way

  1794. to heaven.

  1795. And that's

  1796. what this

  1797. chapter is all

  1798. about.

  1799. He's exposing

  1800. the false

  1801. gospel that

  1802. existed and

  1803. that exists

  1804. still today.

  1805. And he's not

  1806. saying that you

  1807. don't need to

  1808. live a holy

  1809. life.

  1810. He's not

  1811. saying like

  1812. the liberals

  1813. would have

  1814. said in that

  1815. day and that

  1816. would say in

  1817. this day that

  1818. God's grace is

  1819. enough for you

  1820. to have a license

  1821. to do whatever

  1822. you want.

  1823. That's not

  1824. what Paul is

  1825. saying.

  1826. He's saying

  1827. you can't be

  1828. good enough

  1829. for salvation.

  1830. Jesus did

  1831. that for you

  1832. and once you

  1833. know him

  1834. you'll do

  1835. whatever he

  1836. wants you to

  1837. do in order

  1838. to live for

  1839. him.

  1840. Not because

  1841. you owe

  1842. him but

  1843. because he

  1844. is fit for

  1845. you to live

  1846. a life that

  1847. is worthy of

  1848. the calling

  1849. to which he

  1850. has called

  1851. you.

  1852. Look with

  1853. me.

  1854. The middle

  1855. of chapter

  1856. three and

  1857. we'll be

  1858. done.

  1859. Paul says

  1860. in verse

  1861. 12

  1862. I follow

  1863. after

  1864. if that

  1865. I may

  1866. apprehend

  1867. or if I

  1868. may achieve

  1869. that

  1870. for

  1871. which

  1872. I was

  1873. apprehended

  1874. of Christ

  1875. Jesus.

  1876. In other

  1877. words

  1878. I know

  1879. Christ and

  1880. Christ did

  1881. all of this

  1882. for me and

  1883. one of the

  1884. reasons that

  1885. he did all

  1886. of this for

  1887. me is so

  1888. that I

  1889. can know

  1890. him and

  1891. so that

  1892. he could

  1893. set me

  1894. aside as

  1895. holy and

  1896. he could

  1897. start to

  1898. fashion me

  1899. into Christ

  1900. likeness and

  1901. make me

  1902. righteous and

  1903. holy because

  1904. of my

  1905. salvation.

  1906. Now he

  1907. says my

  1908. goal and

  1909. my desire

  1910. is to

  1911. live the

  1912. way that

  1913. God saved

  1914. me to

  1915. live.

  1916. And it's

  1917. not because

  1918. my living

  1919. earns the

  1920. salvation.

  1921. It's just

  1922. the fact that

  1923. God has

  1924. given this

  1925. salvation

  1926. freely to

  1927. me and

  1928. I want to

  1929. live the

  1930. way that

  1931. he saved

  1932. me to

  1933. live.

  1934. What a

  1935. glorious

  1936. truth,

  1937. the gospel.

  1938. What a

  1939. burden-free

  1940. gospel that

  1941. God gives

  1942. us.

  1943. I was

  1944. encouraged this

  1945. week in a

  1946. moment of

  1947. prayer to

  1948. acknowledge that

  1949. Christ's

  1950. forgiveness is

  1951. so wonderfully

  1952. great and

  1953. extensive.

  1954. The

  1955. forgiveness

  1956. that we

  1957. receive from

  1958. Christ is

  1959. not just a

  1960. forgiveness for

  1961. the things that

  1962. we have done

  1963. in the past.

  1964. It's a

  1965. forgiveness for

  1966. the things that

  1967. we falter in

  1968. now.

  1969. As a

  1970. pastor,

  1971. someone that

  1972. has served in

  1973. church ministry

  1974. now for 13

  1975. total years,

  1976. days of

  1977. doubt that

  1978. I battle,

  1979. days of

  1980. severe doubt,

  1981. days that

  1982. make me

  1983. ashamed,

  1984. not only as

  1985. a pastor but

  1986. as a

  1987. Christian.

  1988. I was

  1989. overwhelmed

  1990. this week in

  1991. a moment of

  1992. prayer to

  1993. consider that

  1994. God's grace is

  1995. so much greater

  1996. than that doubt.

  1997. what a

  1998. freeing gospel

  1999. that is.

  2000. Not only that

  2001. he has forgiven

  2002. what I have

  2003. done but he's

  2004. forgiven what

  2005. I'm going to

  2006. do.

  2007. Sometimes we

  2008. get this idea

  2009. even after

  2010. salvation that

  2011. God is just

  2012. waiting, he's on

  2013. the edge of our

  2014. seat waiting for

  2015. us to doubt him

  2016. in some way or

  2017. waiting for us to

  2018. slip up in some

  2019. way and then

  2020. bam, he's gonna

  2021. nail us with

  2022. something.

  2023. It's not God

  2024. at all.

  2025. That is not

  2026. grace.

  2027. God's grace is

  2028. he has saved

  2029. you.

  2030. He has

  2031. imputed the

  2032. righteousness of

  2033. Christ in your

  2034. life and yes you

  2035. will struggle and

  2036. yes the battle in

  2037. spiritual warfare is

  2038. fierce but even in

  2039. that battle and even

  2040. in those moments of

  2041. weakness and even in

  2042. those moments of

2043. doubt as we'll sing in

  2044. just a moment, he

  2045. will hold you

  2046. fast.

  2047. How wonderfully

  2048. glorious that is.

2049. Can I tell you what

  2050. won't hold you fast?

  2051. Your baptism.

  2052. What won't hold you

  2053. fast is your choice

  2054. of translation.

  2055. What won't hold you

2056. fast is the way that

  2057. you dress and the

  2058. moral code that you

  2059. follow.

  2060. None of those things

  2061. are gonna hold you

  2062. fast.

  2063. What will hold you

  2064. fast is Christ.

  2065. Christ will hold you

  2066. fast.
