  7. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect,

  8. but I follow after if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

  9. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended, but this one thing I do,

  10. forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

  11. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

  12. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded.

  13. And if in anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

  14. Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

  15. Throughout our study of the book of Philippians, I've on occasion have mentioned the three tenses of salvation.

  16. Do you remember those?

  17. Well, since the entire third chapter of Philippians chapter 3 is about salvation,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  18. Paul touches in one way or another on each of these three realities of the Christian life.

  19. And after defining true conversion in the first 11 verses of the chapter,

  20. he moves to discuss the believer's sanctification in verses 12 to 16.

  21. So we're moving past the past tense of salvation, the moment of conversion,

  22. and now he's dealing with specifically this progressive sanctifying process of the believer.

  23. And I want to draw your attention specifically to the first statement in verse 12.

  24. Would you look at it with me?

  25. Paul says,

  26. It's not as though I had already attained this, either were already perfect.

  27. And here's why we know that Paul is moving from conversion and justification in verse 12 into sanctification.

  28. Because he says clearly,

  29. The thing to which I'm referring, I have not yet obtained.

  30. And I have not yet apprehended.

  31. I've not yet been made perfect.

  32. That glorification that is coming for me one day, I have not yet attained it.

  33. So when we study this verse, we understand that Paul is not talking about not attaining salvation.

  34. He's talking about not yet reaching a state of perfection.

  35. The Bible clearly teaches that salvation is a present possession.

  36. And it is eternally secured for any individual that will place saving faith in Christ alone.

  37. The salvation and eternal life that God offers is not a potential salvation.

  38. It's a definitive salvation.

  39. When we come to Christ in faith, we don't place our faith in him in hopes that he will save us.

  40. We place our faith in him with the definitive promise of God that he will save us.

  41. It's our present possession eternal life is in that moment.

  42. Let me point you to a couple scriptures.

  43. In John chapter 10, Jesus said,

    John 10 chapter mention

  44. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

  45. And then he says,

  46. I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish,

  47. and no man will pluck them out of my hand.

  48. In other words, Jesus is saying,

  49. If you will come to me in faith, this eternal life that I offer you, you will receive.

  50. It's guaranteed.

  51. It's a definitive promise.

  52. You will never perish.

  53. Not only will you never perish, but there's no person on this planet that can strip this salvation away from you.

  54. You are secure in my hands.

  55. This life that I give is a definitive promise, not a potential promise.

  56. So when Paul says in verse 12,

  57. I've not already attained what I'm talking about.

  58. I've not already been made perfect.

  59. He's not talking about conversion.

  60. He's talking about the sanctifying process.

  61. It's important.

  62. If the Judaizers were right, that one could earn salvation through good works and religious commitment,

  63. there would never be a way to truly know if you had been good enough or if you had been committed enough.

  64. Salvation would not be a present possession.

  65. It would be a potential hope.

  66. But God has told us clearly that he offers salvation not on the basis of our performance,

  67. because as Isaiah said, our righteousness to him is like filthy rags in comparison.

  68. But he offers salvation on the basis of his own love and grace.

  69. And he's told us in his word that we can be absolutely certain that salvation is ours if we trust Christ.

  70. John wrote in 1 John 5.13,

  71. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God,

  72. that you may know that you have eternal life.

  73. You can know today absolutely for certain that eternal life is yours.

  74. And it's not a question as to whether or not you're good enough, as we've studied the last few Sundays.

  75. It's a question on do you know Christ?

  76. Not do you know about Christ, but do you know him?

  77. Have you experienced his saving power by casting 100% of your faith on him for salvation?

  78. Well, Paul's approach to the issue of sanctification here in righteous living is different than he approaches it in other letters.

  79. Rather than providing a list of do's and don'ts,

  80. he deals with sanctification in these verses as a matter of the mind and heart.

  81. And he does that by continuing on in his testimony.

  82. Now, he had already referenced in verse number 8 that he knew Christ personally.

  83. Look at that.

  84. He's speaking of his conversion.

  85. He says,

  86. Yea, doubtless in verse 8,

  87. I count all things but loss for the surpassing value or worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

  88. He had already known Christ personally.

  89. In sanctification, in these verses, he was seeking to know Christ progressively.

  90. So in verse 10, he proclaimed the benefits of knowing Christ as being receiving Christ.

  91. Power over sin as receiving also partnership with Christ in suffering and loss,

  92. and then the eternal life that only Christ can give.

  93. And for Paul, this sets in motion a cycle.

  94. Because he had experienced Christ in salvation in verse number 10,

  95. he immediately felt the satisfaction that can only come from Jesus Christ.

  96. But then immediately, a dissatisfaction settles into his heart.

  97. Because he wanted to know Christ more.

  98. And it sets in motion this cycle that exists in the heart of every believer I believe.

  99. Look at what Paul says in verse 10.

  100. He says,

  101. Then look down at verse 12.

  102. He says,

  103. Not that I've already attained this sanctification.

  104. Either we're already perfect.

  105. But I press on.

  106. I follow after.

  107. So you can sense in salvation, Paul was totally satisfied in Jesus Christ.

  108. And then because of that satisfaction, he couldn't get enough.

  109. And he said,

  110. I just want more of Christ.

  111. I want to know him more.

  112. I want to know more about him.

  113. I want to know how I can please him.

  114. I want to experience his power more and more and more.

  115. And then each step of this progressive sanctification,

  116. as Paul would know Christ more,

  117. as he would understand the scriptures more,

  118. he would be satisfied in Christ and then immediately dissatisfied again.

  119. Because he just wants to know more.

  120. That's indicative of the life of a true believer.

  121. That once we experience what Christ offers in salvation,

  122. we just want more and more and more of him.

  123. And so Paul's testimony here in these verses

  124. is really a testimony of this cycle.

  125. And it's an encouragement for us to jump into the cycle ourselves.

  126. To be satisfied in Christ and then to be dissatisfied

  127. with how little we know about him

  128. and how little we experience his power.

  129. And just to want more.

  130. And in wanting more,

  131. pursuing him,

  132. following after,

  133. pressing on,

  134. as Paul says.

  135. Jesus said in Matthew chapter five and verse six

  136. in the Beatitudes,

  137. in his Sermon on the Mount,

  138. he said,

  139. blessed are those which do hunger and thirst

  140. after righteousness.

  141. Well,

  142. what is righteousness in the scriptures?

  143. Righteousness comes from Christ.

  144. We can't be righteous on our own.

  145. It comes through his power.

  146. So when Jesus says,

  147. blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness,

  148. it's not just a blessing on those who want to get their life together.

  149. It's a blessing on those who want to know me

  150. and want to know my righteousness

  151. and want to know my power.

  152. And then he says,

  153. blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness

  154. for they shall be satisfied,

  155. he says.

  156. They shall be filled.

  157. It's a promise that God gives.

  158. What a glorious promise that is.

  159. That as we sense the dissatisfaction of this world

  160. and we sense the dissatisfaction of this life

  161. and we sense the dissatisfaction of our present walk with Christ,

  162. that when we hunger after him

  163. and we thirst after him,

  164. his promise is,

  165. you will be filled.

  166. If I'm what you hunger for,

  167. I will fill you.

  168. As long as you're hungering and thirsting after this life

  169. and the sins of this world

  170. and what it has to offer,

  171. you will feel empty.

  172. But as long as you are hungering and thirsting after me,

  173. you will be filled.

  174. We've been singing this song the last few weeks,

  175. Jesus Strong and Kind.

  176. And I think it's the second verse that says,

  177. Jesus said that if I thirst,

  178. I should come to him.

  179. No one else can satisfy.

  180. I should come to him.

  181. For the Lord is good and gracious.

  182. He is strong and kind.

  183. And we rejoice in that truth.

  184. Well, let me quickly give you three things

  185. about these passages as Paul breaks it down for us.

  186. Number one, in verse 12,

  187. we see that sanctification is a purposeful call.

  188. It's a purposeful call.

  189. Look at verse 12 with me again.

  190. Paul says,

  191. not as though I had already attained,

  192. either were already perfect,

  193. but I follow after or I press on

  194. if that I may apprehend that for which

  195. also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

  196. Now the phrase I follow after

  197. is meant to open our understanding

  198. to Paul's intensity.

  199. The Greek term has references to war

  200. and the pursuit of victory in a battle.

  201. And Paul's point when he says,

  202. I follow after is this sanctifying process,

  203. this following after Christ

  204. and living a holy and righteous life

  205. is something that I'm fighting for

  206. in the way that a soldier fights

  207. to win the battle on the battlefield.

  208. It was his intensity.

  209. He said, I am fighting for this.

  210. I am fighting to be like Christ in this way.

  211. But since his salvation was already secure,

  212. what was the motivation for him to fight in this way?

  213. If he was already positionally righteous before God,

  214. what was the point in being so concerned

  215. with spiritual growth now?

  216. And that's a valid question.

  217. And it's one we have to be able to answer.

  218. And thankfully, Paul answers it in verse 12.

  219. Look at the second half of the verse.

  220. If that I may apprehend or lay hold of or achieve

  221. that, notice this, for which,

  222. that for which Christ has apprehended me

  223. or I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

  224. What Paul is saying is this life of righteousness

  225. and sanctification is a divine call.

  226. It is the purpose of Christ in saving us

  227. to make us more like him.

  228. Paul's goal in life was consistent

  229. with Christ's goal in saving him.

  230. And what was Christ's goal in saving him?

  231. Romans chapter eight tells us.

  232. You know this first verse well

  233. that's helpful for us all the time.

  234. And we know that all things work together for good

  235. to them that love God,

  236. to them who are called according to his purpose.

  237. That is a reference to those who are saved,

  238. who have believed.

  239. And then he says in verse 29,

  240. for whom God did foreknow,

  241. he also did predestine.

  242. He's referring to believers,

  243. those who are saved.

  244. He also did predestine to do what?

  245. Be conformed to the image of his son.

  246. What was the purpose in Christ saving you?

  247. What's the purpose in God providing salvation to begin with?

  248. To make us righteous.

  249. To conform us to the image of his perfectly righteous son.

  250. So when Paul looked at sanctification,

  251. the pursuit of righteousness,

  252. he viewed it as a divine call

  253. that went part and parcel

  254. with the divine call to salvation.

  255. In other words,

  256. every person that is a believer

  257. has the call of God,

  258. the purposeful call of God

  259. to live a righteous life.

  260. And this is logically consistent

  261. with the doctrines of sin and salvation.

  262. Think about it.

  263. In conversion,

  264. we recognize the holiness of God

  265. set against our sinful condition.

  266. And we realize that it's our sin

  267. that separates us from God.

  268. So if it's our sin that separates us from God,

  269. and if the purpose in Christ dying on the cross

  270. was to provide an atonement for that sin

  271. and to provide reconciliation to God the Father,

  272. why would we not desire

  273. to continue in righteousness after salvation?

  274. It only makes sense.

  275. Paul wasn't pursuing a righteousness

  276. to earn his salvation,

  277. but he recognized a holy life

  278. as a divine call

  279. on all those who have already received salvation.

  280. Listen, we have a divine call of God

  281. to pursue holiness.

  282. And it should be our lifelong pursuit.

  283. God is not content for Christians

  284. to have a careless attitude toward righteous living.

  285. In fact, the command of the scripture

  286. is that we follow God's pattern of righteousness,

  287. which is a perfect pattern.

  288. Remember what Peter wrote in 1 Peter 1.

  289. He says that we are to gird up the loins of our mind,

  290. to be sober and hope to the end for the grace

  291. that is to be brought unto you.

  292. And then he says the way that we do that

  293. is as obedient children,

  294. not fashioning ourselves

  295. according to the former lust in your ignorance,

  296. but as he which has called you to salvation is holy,

  297. so be ye holy in all manner of life.

  298. Because it is written,

  299. be ye holy for I am holy.

  300. It's a divine call.

  301. It's a call that we must take seriously.

  302. And the question for this

  303. is what is your spirit toward this call?

  304. Are you more like the liberals or the libertines

  305. that would say I'm positionally righteous before Christ?

  306. That means I can just live the way that I want

  307. and just ask forgiveness and everything's good.

  308. But that's not the spirit of a Christian at all

  309. in the scripture.

  310. The spirit of a believer is that we pursue Christ.

  311. We are not content with our sin.

  312. We want to leave that behind.

  313. What's your spirit towards righteousness?

  314. It's not that you're perfect

  315. and not that you expect to be perfect,

  316. but do you want to be?

  317. Do you desire to please the Lord in that way?

  318. Do you desire to pursue holiness in that way?

  319. That was Paul's heart

  320. and it was the whole purpose of him bringing up

  321. those words in verse 12,

  322. that this was a divine call of God

  323. and it was a call of God

  324. that he was going to pursue with all of his might.

  325. So we see a purposeful call.

  326. Secondly, we see a passionate pursuit.

  327. Passionate pursuit.

  328. Look with me at verse 13 and 14.

  329. He says,

  330. brothers, I count not myself to have apprehended.

  331. I'm not there yet.

  332. He's reemphasizing again his own deficiency.

  333. But this one thing I do,

  334. forgetting those things which are behind,

  335. reaching forth under those things which are before,

  336. I press toward the goal of the prize

  337. of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

  338. It's a passionate pursuit.

  339. Something he was pursuing with all of his might.

  340. Now, in verse 12,

  341. it reveals the purpose in pursuing righteousness.

  342. Verses 13 and 14 show us the procedure

  343. that we're to follow in pursuing righteousness.

  344. What's so helpful about Paul's approach here

  345. is that he keeps the focus on our mindset

  346. rather than on a specific list of sins to avoid

  347. and works to embrace.

  348. Now, he could have just given a whole list of things

  349. that the Philippians needed to do

  350. in order to please God

  351. and a list of things they needed to avoid

  352. in order to please God.

  353. And it wouldn't have been wrong for him to do that.

  354. He did that in several other letters.

  355. I think that the reason that he didn't

  356. is because what they were dealing with

  357. in terms of the Judaizers,

  358. it would have seemed like it was no different

  359. than what the Judaizers were saying.

  360. So he leaves off the list for a moment

  361. and I think he does it helpfully.

  362. Instead of giving a list of rules,

  363. Paul zeroed in on what is the root

  364. of all outward behavior.

  365. You know what it is?

  366. The attitude of the heart.

  367. The root of everything we do,

  368. the root of everything we say,

  369. the root of everything we think

  370. is the attitude of the heart.

  371. So instead of giving a whole list of things

  372. that these Philippians needed to do

  373. and a whole list of things that they needed to avoid,

  374. Paul zeroes it into a singular focus

  375. and he says, just pursue Christ.

  376. If you will just pursue Christ

  377. and pursue him passionately,

  378. all the other things will fall into place

  379. the way that they need to.

  380. Focus on Christ.

  381. Jesus said in Matthew 15,

  382. that the things which proceed out of the mouth

  383. come from the heart

  384. and they defile the man.

  385. And then he says,

  386. for out of the heart proceeds evil thoughts

  387. and murders and adulteries

  388. and fornications and thefts

  389. and false witness and blasphemies.

  390. And again in Luke chapter six,

  391. Jesus says,

  392. a good man out of the good treasure of his heart

  393. brings forth that which is good.

  394. And an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart

  395. brings forth that which is evil.

  396. For of the abundance of the heart,

  397. the mouth speaketh.

  398. The truth is what is within you

  399. will eventually work its way out.

  400. So fill your heart with Christ.

  401. Focus your attention on his word.

  402. Focus your attention on who he is

  403. and what he desires.

  404. Fill your heart with him.

  405. Fill your heart with his truth

  406. so that what proceeds out of your heart

  407. is grace and truth and righteousness and love

  408. and all of the things that exist in Christ Jesus.

  409. Forget the list and just focus on Christ.

  410. There's two things he says in regards to this

  411. as a part of this procedure.

  412. In verse 13 he says that he has a singular focus.

  413. A singular focus.

  414. Paul sums up his entire life's purpose

  415. into one focus.

  416. To pursue Christ.

  417. Ultimately,

  418. Paul's mind wasn't focused on righteousness itself.

  419. It wasn't righteousness for righteousness' sake.

  420. His focus was on pleasing Jesus.

  421. When he said,

  422. this is my goal,

  423. it wasn't my goal

  424. is to read my Bible

  425. a certain amount of times a day

  426. and my goal isn't to pray

  427. a certain amount of hours a day

  428. and my goal isn't to avoid this list of sins.

  429. He zeroed it all in on just saying,

  430. my goal is Christ.

  431. My goal is Christ.

  432. And in my pursuit of Christ,

  433. I'm gonna study his word

  434. and I'm gonna pray

  435. and I'm gonna avoid sin,

  436. but I'm not focused on that

  437. so much as I'm just focused on Christ.

  438. He had a singular focus.

  439. The truth is that

  440. true righteousness

  441. will only come

  442. whenever our hearts and minds

  443. are focused singularly

  444. on knowing and pursuing Jesus.

  445. Verses 13 and 14,

  446. as I mentioned a moment ago,

  447. use words that in Greek

  448. would have illustrated

  449. to the Philippian readers

  450. a sprinter

  451. who would have run

  452. in the Isthmian Games

  453. or the Olympic Games

  454. of the time.

  455. Basically, Paul's saying

  456. just like a runner

  457. who has focused

  458. on winning the race,

  459. he was focused

  460. on knowing and pleasing

  461. his Savior.

  462. And it's not the only time

  463. he uses this illustration.

  464. In fact,

  465. if you're keeping notes,

  466. write down 1 Corinthians 9,

  467. 24 to 27

  468. and reference it later.

  469. If I go there,

  470. I'll spend too much time on it.

  471. So I'm just gonna trust you

  472. to study it later.

  473. But his focus really had

  474. two features in this verse.

  475. Forgetting the past

  476. and looking forward to Jesus.

  477. Look at the first one

  478. in verse 13.

  479. This one thing I do,

  480. forgetting those things

  481. which are behind.

  482. Have you ever watched

  483. videos on YouTube

  484. of showboats in races?

  485. You know what I'm talking about?

  486. Those who are running track

  487. and they at least think

  488. that they're way ahead

  489. of the other people.

  490. And right before they get

  491. to the finish line,

  492. they start to showboat

  493. a little bit.

  494. And here comes the scrawny guy

  495. that runs right past him

  496. to steal the victory

  497. at the very end.

  498. It's not that the other guy

  499. was faster.

  500. It's that he was more focused.

  501. He's more focused on the race.

  502. We've all seen videos like that.

  503. It doesn't just apply to running.

  504. I remember distinctively

  505. as I was studying this week,

  506. the,

  507. was it 2016,

  508. the Summer Olympics

  509. were in Brazil,

  510. in Rio.

  511. You remember all of the buildup

  512. in anticipation

  513. to the 200 meter butterfly

  514. men's final

  515. that had Michael Phelps.

  516. Michael Phelps was

  517. the United States

  518. phenom in swimming

  519. and he was chasing

  520. this world record

  521. gold medals,

  522. I think is what it was.

  523. And there was all this buildup

  524. to this specific race.

  525. The butterfly was one

  526. of his better races,

  527. but in 2012 in London,

  528. he had barely lost

  529. and taken second place

  530. to a guy from South Africa

  531. named Chad LaCleude.

  532. Do you remember?

  533. And there was all this buildup

  534. to this race in Rio.

  535. And if you remember,

  536. right before they all went out

  537. to their marks

  538. for this race

  539. in the final race,

  540. Michael Phelps

  541. was sitting down

  542. on his chair

  543. on a folding chair

  544. and Chad LaCleude

  545. was in front of him

  546. with his headphones on

  547. and he was shadowboxing

  548. in front of Michael Phelps.

  549. He was taunting him.

  550. And even the lead up

  551. to this taunting

  552. on this day

  553. was lots of media coverage

  554. where Chad LaCleude

  555. was,

  556. he was running his mouth,

  557. I beat him before

  558. I'm going to beat him again,

  559. and all that kind of stuff

  560. was coming out.

  561. Like he had built himself up huge.

  562. And there was all these memes,

  563. you can Google them today,

  564. there were all these memes

  565. of Michael Phelps

  566. where he had this death stare

  567. on Chad LaCleude

  568. like he hated his guts.

  569. It's so funny

  570. to pull him up online.

  571. Well, they come to the race,

  572. Chad LaCleude

  573. is in lane five,

  574. Michael Phelps

  575. is in lane six.

  576. The gun goes off

  577. and they jump in the pole

  578. and they go about it.

  579. Halfway through the race,

  580. they were pretty close.

  581. Michael Phelps

  582. was just ahead of Chad LaCleude,

  583. but they're right next

  584. to each other

  585. and here's what Chad LaCleude

  586. starts to do

  587. in the second half of the race.

  588. Every time he comes up for breath,

  589. he looks to his right

  590. or his left,

  591. I can't remember which side it was.

  592. He looks to his right

  593. to see where Michael Phelps was.

  594. He wasn't focused on the wall,

  595. which is where he was swimming towards.

  596. He kept looking at Michael Phelps.

  597. He was so concerned

  598. of beating Michael Phelps

  599. and then in contrast to that,

  600. the camera zeroes in on Michael Phelps

  601. and he couldn't care less

  602. where Chad LaCleude is.

  603. His eyes are focused ahead.

  604. Every time he comes up for breath,

  605. his eyes are looking at the wall

  606. every time

  607. and he ends up going

  608. and winning the race

  609. and Chad LaCleude

  610. didn't even finish

  611. in first, second, or third.

  612. He didn't even place

  613. and the point was

  614. he was focused and distracted

  615. or he was distracted

  616. by all the things

  617. that were around him.

  618. He wasn't focused on the goal.

  619. Michael Phelps was focused on the goal

  620. and it helped him

  621. to win the race

  622. but there's all these things

  623. that come into our lives

  624. that prevent us

  625. from focusing on the goal

  626. and Paul says

  627. it's all summed up

  628. in forgetting the past.

  629. Forgetting the past.

  630. Some of us

  631. are so focused

  632. on past successes

  633. !

  634. that our life now

  635. is consumed

  636. with complacency.

  637. We live in all the things

  638. that we used to do

  639. for the Lord

  640. and we thrive

  641. on all the good old days

  642. of church

  643. and all the things

  644. that we used to do

  645. and what we do

  646. when we look at our life now

  647. is we just see complacency.

  648. We're satisfied

  649. with what we've done

  650. in the past

  651. and so instead of pursuing

  652. forward after Christ

  653. we just sit still

  654. hoping that our past achievements

  655. were good enough.

  656. Some of us

  657. on the other extreme

  658. are so mindful

  659. of our past failure

  660. that we're paralyzed

  661. and what's so wonderful

  662. about what the Bible

  663. tells us about God's grace

  664. is there is no sin

  665. in your life

  666. that he will not forgive.

  667. Think about Paul's life.

  668. He had an amazing list

  669. of accomplishments

  670. even after his conversion.

  671. Most people regard him

  672. as the greatest Christian

  673. to ever live

  674. and I hate quantitative

  675. statements like that

  676. but there's no doubt

  677. he was a model believer

  678. for us to follow

  679. and he had all these things.

  680. He could have said

  681. I started all these churches.

  682. I've suffered

  683. in all these ways

  684. and he would have been fine

  685. with what he had done

  686. in the past.

  687. He also had a full list

  688. of past failures

  689. that none of us

  690. have been guilty of.

  691. He was a murderer

  692. and he wasn't just a murderer

  693. he murdered Christians

  694. because they were Christians.

  695. He was a filthy sinful man

  696. but neither his past successes

  697. nor his past failures

  698. caused him to lay back

  699. in his pursuit of Christ.

  700. Forgot the things

  701. that were behind him.

  702. He didn't get distracted

  703. by what was on his left side

  704. or his right side.

  705. And then the second part

  706. is reaching forth.

  707. This word pictures

  708. a runner who's grasping ahead.

  709. It literally means to grasp.

  710. It's grasping ahead

  711. after the finish.

  712. He says not only

  713. am I forgetting

  714. what's behind

  715. I am focused

  716. on what's before.

  717. And the singular focus

  718. that he had

  719. was Jesus Christ.

  720. It wasn't just

  721. a singular focus

  722. it was a determined effort.

  723. Look at verse 14.

  724. Perhaps the most famous verse

  725. in the entire book.

  726. I press toward the mark

  727. or the goal

  728. is what that means.

  729. I press toward the goal

  730. for the prize

  731. of the high calling

  732. of God in Christ Jesus.

  733. The prize and the goal

  734. wasn't an achievement

  735. or an accomplishment.

  736. The prize and the goal

  737. in verse 14

  738. is Christ.

  739. That was his focus.

  740. That's what he cared about

  741. and that's what he pursued.

  742. And since that's what

  743. he was pursuing

  744. Christ

  745. he was willing

  746. to discipline himself

  747. in any way possible

  748. in order to properly

  749. pursue Christ.

  750. When a runner

  751. prepares for a race

  752. I've been able

  753. in my life

  754. to run two full marathons

  755. and both times

  756. it took several months

  757. six, seven, eight months

  758. of preparations

  759. to get ready for that.

  760. Which is why

  761. I don't do it

  762. very often now.

  763. It's a lot of work.

  764. It's very early mornings.

  765. It's getting up

  766. on some occasions

  767. at 3.30 in the morning

  768. to go for a 20 mile run

  769. so that I can be at work

  770. by nine o'clock.

  771. It's thinking about

  772. everything that I put

  773. in my mouth

  774. because the bad food

  775. could mess up

  776. my training

  777. and it could affect

  778. the way that I was

  779. trying to run

  780. and how I was trying

  781. to reach my goal

  782. and it was months

  783. of this.

  784. Months of this.

  785. The point was

  786. if I wouldn't have

  787. done the training

  788. if I would have

  789. not cared about

  790. my diet

  791. I would have never

  792. been able to run

  793. that race very well

  794. either one of them.

  795. Paul disciplined

  796. his body spiritually

  797. in regards to sin

  798. and in regards

  799. to religious accomplishment

  800. it wasn't for the sake

  801. of his salvation

  802. but it was because

  803. he was saved.

  804. He was determined

  805. he was determined

  806. to do whatever

  807. he needed to do.

  808. The struggle is

  809. we get to all

  810. of these gray areas

  811. in our life

  812. where we're not

  813. real sure

  814. if this is an exact

  815. right or wrong issue

  816. and almost always

  817. if our pursuit

  818. isn't Christ

  819. we lean toward

  820. the more sinful

  821. way of living.

  822. Even if it's not a sin

  823. the focus of our mind

  824. isn't Christ

  825. the focus of our mind

  826. is our fulfillment.

  827. Paul says

  828. I discipline my body

  829. and I pursue Christ

  830. with everything

  831. it's a determined effort.

  832. In any kind of achievement

  833. or any kind of goal

  834. that we ever have in life

  835. any difficult endeavor

  836. one has to determine

  837. if the reward

  838. is worth the effort.

  839. For the Christian

  840. Christ is the reward

  841. and there's no effort

  842. too great

  843. to keep us

  844. from pursuing him.

  845. I mentioned

  846. Eric Little

  847. and Chariots of Fire

  848. earlier.

  849. Eric Little

  850. really is a great

  851. hero of the faith

  852. if you ever study

  853. his life

  854. I would encourage

  855. you to do that

  856. read one of his biographies.

  857. He was known

  858. as the Flying Scotsman

  859. right Bob?

  860. He was the Flying Scotsman

  861. and he was a

  862. very very fast runner

  863. he was an even more

  864. committed Christian

  865. and he ultimately

  866. gave his life

  867. as a martyr

  868. basically in China

  869. on the mission field

  870. is where he ended up

  871. dying I think in the 1940s

  872. at the end of World War II

  873. he was in an internment camp there.

  874. But before that ever came about

  875. in the 1920s

  876. he was chosen to run

  877. for Scotland

  878. in the Olympic Games.

  879. Before he ever got

  880. to the Olympic Games

  881. there was a specific race

  882. when he was on the British team

  883. and they were running

  884. against France

  885. and I can't remember

  886. exactly the place

  887. Bob may remember

  888. but where they're running together

  889. and right at the beginning

  890. of the race

  891. might have been

  892. the 100 yard dash

  893. could have been

  894. the 440 meter actually

  895. right at the beginning

  896. of the race

  897. he tripped over another runner

  898. and he fell.

  899. He didn't just fall

  900. on the track

  901. he fell off the track

  902. and by the time

  903. he got back up

  904. to his feet

  905. all the other runners

  906. were about 30 meters

  907. ahead of him.

  908. Most runners today

  909. throw up their hands

  910. be upset

  911. at whoever

  912. tripped them

  913. and just went

  914. to wherever

  915. their coaches were.

  916. That's not what

  917. Eric Little did.

  918. He gets up

  919. as is portrayed

  920. on Chariots of the Fire

  921. fantastically

  922. and he begins to run

  923. and he ran

  924. as hard as he possibly could

  925. and not only

  926. did he make up

  927. the 30 meter difference

  928. between he

  929. and all the other runners

  930. but he went on

  931. to win the race

  932. and he was known

  933. for this particular posture

  934. in his running

  935. that when he was given

  936. maximum effort

  937. his knees were high

  938. they said

  939. that he was

  940. the ugliest runner

  941. to ever run.

  942. His knees were high

  943. he would throw

  944. his head back

  945. mouth agape

  946. and he would grasp

  947. like this

  948. as he was running.

  949. It was maximum effort.

  950. He gave maximum effort

  951. not only

  952. on the track

  953. and field

  954. but he gave maximum

  955. effort

  956. in his Christian life

  957. and that's exactly

  958. the picture

  959. Paul is painting here.

  960. When he says

  961. reaching forward

  962. he's maximum effort

  963. I'm doing everything

  964. I can

  965. to live the way

  966. that God called me

  967. to live.

  968. Not because

  969. I'm going to earn

  970. anything from God

  971. but because

  972. this is why

  973. he saved me.

  974. This is my purpose

  975. to glorify him

  976. and I'm going to

  977. pursue that

  978. with passion.

  979. And then finally

  980. quickly

  981. verses 15 and 16

  982. we see a preemptive

  983. warning

  984. a preemptive warning.

  985. Look at verse 15.

  986. Paul leaves off

  987. the illustration now

  988. and he says

  989. let us therefore

  990. as many as be perfect

  991. that just means

  992. mature.

  993. He's referencing people

  994. that have experienced

  995. some spiritual maturity

  996. let us therefore

  997. be thus minded

  998. and if in anything

  999. you be otherwise minded

  1000. God shall reveal

  1001. even this unto you

  1002. chastening

  1003. allowing you

  1004. to fall into sin

  1005. and face the consequences

  1006. of it

1007. God will deal with it.

  1008. Nevertheless

  1009. where to

  1010. we have already attained

  1011. to the point

  1012. that we have grown

  1013. in our spiritual maturity

  1014. let us walk

  1015. by the same rule

  1016. let us continue

  1017. on in it

  1018. let us mind

  1019. the same thing.

  1020. He was reemphasizing

  1021. the fact

  1022. that our pursuit

  1023. of knowing

  1024. and pleasing Christ

  1025. is a lifelong pursuit.

  1026. And essentially

  1027. what Paul was telling

  1028. these believers

  1029. to do

  1030. especially the ones

  1031. that had experienced

  1032. a level of

  1033. spiritual maturity

  1034. he was essentially

  1035. telling them

  1036. not to rest

  1037. on their laurels.

1038. Do you know that phrase?

  1039. I don't think

  1040. it's so popular now.

  1041. It used to be

  1042. maybe

  1043. the late 1800s

  1044. as I've tried

  1045. to look up

  1046. its origins.

1047. To rest on your laurels

  1048. it's a nod

  1049. to the Greek games

  1050. in ancient Greece.

  1051. What the runners

  1052. would win

  1053. what would be

  1054. their reward

1055. at the end of the race

  1056. was a laurel wreath

  1057. that would be placed

  1058. on their heads.

  1059. The Romans

  1060. eventually adopted

  1061. this as well

  1062. instead of just

  1063. giving it to runners

  1064. they gave it to

  1065. generals that had won

  1066. great victories

  1067. in battle

1068. and they would come back

  1069. and they would parade

  1070. them through Rome

  1071. with these laurel wreaths

  1072. on their head.

  1073. It represented victory.

  1074. It was accomplishment.

  1075. Not to rest

  1076. on your laurels

  1077. means not to be

  1078. so infatuated

  1079. with your past achievements

  1080. that you no longer

  1081. put forth any effort.

  1082. And essentially

  1083. what Paul is telling

  1084. these believers is

  1085. I know you've

  1086. come a long way

  1087. and the Lord's

  1088. been good to you

  1089. and he has sanctified

  1090. you to this extent

  1091. but don't rest

  1092. on your laurels.

  1093. Keep pursuing

  1094. Christ.

  1095. Now think about

  1096. where Paul's at here.

  1097. this is a man

  1098. who at this point

  1099. is in his 60s

  1100. he has spent

  1101. four years now

  1102. in prison

  1103. it's only a matter

  1104. of time

  1105. before he's beheaded.

  1106. We know historically

1107. he gets out of this

  1108. imprisonment

  1109. two years later

  1110. he's back in prison

  1111. ultimately he's put

  1112. to death

  1113. beheaded.

  1114. Now as a 60 year old

  1115. man who had suffered

  1116. in incredible ways

  1117. and had amazing

  1118. accomplishments

  1119. in the Christian faith

  1120. it was this man

  1121. that was saying

  1122. I keep pursuing

  1123. Christ.

  1124. I'm not

  1125. settling

  1126. and resting

  1127. on my laurels.

  1128. As Paul reflected

  1129. on his suffering

  1130. in Acts chapter 20

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  1131. and as he even

  1132. looked ahead

  1133. to the suffering

  1134. that he imagined

  1135. he would continue

  1136. to experience

1137. he said his one goal

  1138. was to finish

  1139. his race strong.

  1140. Acts chapter 20

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  1141. told the Ephesian elders

1142. he said none of these

  1143. things move me.

  1144. That's a reference

  1145. to his suffering.

  1146. None of these things

  1147. move me.

  1148. Neither count I

  1149. my life dear

  1150. so that I might

  1151. finish my course

  1152. with joy.

  1153. He just wanted

  1154. to run strong.

  1155. He knew he wouldn't

  1156. be perfect.

  1157. He just wanted

  1158. to pursue it

  1159. with his life

  1160. because it was

  1161. God's call.

  1162. And at the end

  1163. of his life

  1164. when he knew

1165. he was about to die

  1166. he wrote to Timothy

  1167. in 2 Timothy 4

  1168. and he said

  1169. in looking back

  1170. I have fought

  1171. a good fight.

  1172. I have kept

  1173. the faith.

  1174. I have finished

  1175. my course.

  1176. What a wonderful

  1177. testimony that is.

  1178. To understand

  1179. not only

  1180. our call

  1181. to living

  1182. a righteous life

  1183. the passion

  1184. to which

  1185. we're pursuing

  1186. but to see

  1187. that at the end

  1188. of our life

  1189. we can look back

  1190. and say

  1191. I finished

  1192. my course.

  1193. I wasn't

  1194. perfect

  1195. but it didn't

  1196. stop me

  1197. from trying

  1198. to be.

  1199. And that

  1200. in essence

  1201. is the spirit

  1202. of Paul's

  1203. message here.

  1204. God's not

  1205. calling you

  1206. to perfection

  1207. he knows

  1208. you'll never

  1209. achieve it.

  1210. What he's

  1211. calling you

  1212. to do

  1213. is pursue

  1214. him.

  1215. And so

  1216. the question

  1217. for us

  1218. today is

  1219. are we

  1220. pursuing

  1221. him?
