  7. Let's turn in our Bibles to Habakkuk chapter 1.

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  8. Habakkuk chapter 1.

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  9. We left our friend Habakkuk last week after exploring the desperate spirit with which he cried to the Lord and prayed to the Lord.

  10. And we saw that his initial question had to do with essentially two things,

  11. God's timing and God's seeming tolerance towards the sin of the nation.

  12. And I want us to be careful not to unwittingly disparage Habakkuk as we examine his prayer.

  13. To be honest with you, I feel like I probably did that too much last week in our study of the first four verses.

  14. I hesitate even to reference Habakkuk's prayer as a complaint because it's really just a result of his confusion,

  15. the same confusion that we deal with.

  16. It wasn't that he was antagonistic towards the Lord or doubtful of God.

  17. He was confused.

  18. He was perplexed by what God was doing or in his perspective by what God wasn't doing.

  19. And so I want us to be careful not to portray this man in a way that he's undeserving of.

  20. God's timing to Habakkuk seemed to be like tolerance.

  21. But Habakkuk knew better than that.

  22. He understood that God is holy and he wasn't questioning God's holiness.

  23. He wasn't questioning God's hatred of sin.

  24. He just couldn't understand why God was silent and had allowed things to seem as if he was tolerant of sin.

  25. Habakkuk was a holy man and he prayed a righteous prayer.

  26. But there's still a lot that we can learn from the dialogue between he and God throughout this book.

  27. And that's exactly why God has so graciously gifted it to us as a part of the Bible.

  28. Well, verses 5 through 11 that we cover today cover God's answer to Habakkuk's first dilemma.

  29. God had actually been active all along, behind the scenes for a long time.

  30. And his explanation to the prophet immediately serves as a reminder to us that God's methods do not often agree with our expectations.

  31. In fact, much about the way God works is actually a mystery to us.

  32. God said in Isaiah 55, he said,

  33. Interestingly, Isaiah recorded those words in the context of God's forgiveness.

  34. But the point is it lost.

  35. God's perfect character means that his methods will greatly differ from what we anticipate.

  36. And it's only as we look at life through the lens of the scriptures that we can begin to comprehend why God works in the way that he does.

  37. We must know him in order to understand his ways.

  38. And even then, we will often feel confused and pray prayers like Habakkuk prayed in the first few verses.

  39. It's in these moments that trusting God is of utmost importance.

  40. As Babby Mason sang,

  41. When you don't understand and when you don't see his plan,

  42. when you can't trace his hand, trust his heart.

  43. And there's going to be a lot of times in our lives where we don't understand what God is doing.

  44. And we're questioning whether or not he's being silent and why he seems to be so tolerant of the wickedness that's around us.

  45. Or why he has brought various things into our lives.

  46. Hardships and so on and so forth.

  47. And when we don't understand all of those things, we can always trust that God is right.

  48. And that though his ways do not always agree with our expectations,

  49. his ways are always best.

  50. And we must continually trust him.

  51. Now, Martin Lloyd-Jones in 1953,

  52. there was a book that was published that was a series of sermons that he had preached

  53. on the book of Habakkuk just after World War II in England.

  54. And I'm actually going to quote him a number of times throughout our message today.

  55. But in regards to this, he said,

  56. We all tend to prescribe the answers to our prayers.

  57. We think that God can only come in one way.

  58. But Scripture teaches us that God sometimes answers our prayers by allowing things to get much worse before they get better.

  59. He may sometimes do the opposite of what we anticipate.

  60. He may overwhelm us by confronting us with a Chaldean army.

  61. Yet it is a fundamental principle in the life and walk of faith that we must always be prepared for the unexpected when we are dealing with God.

  62. And this is how we come to understand Habakkuk's prayer most clearly.

  63. The expectation of his prayer did not match what God was doing.

  64. And it left Habakkuk confused.

  65. But it's not the perplexity of the prophet that is to gain our attention in these verses today, in verses 5 through 11.

  66. Rather, it is the sovereign power of God that is to be our focus.

  67. And consequently, become the motivation for our worship.

  68. God's answer reveals that he is always working.

  69. It reveals that he is in sovereign control of all the events of history, no matter how small or how great.

  70. And that he is working all things according to his divine purpose.

  71. And that's the three observations that I would like to explore with you today.

  72. But let's first read our text.

  73. You're there in Habakkuk chapter 1.

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  74. Let's look beginning at verse number 5.

  75. Verse number 6.

  76. Verse number 6.

  77. The first observation of which we're to make in these verses as it relates to God's response to Habakkuk is the fact that God is always at work.

  78. God is always at work.

  79. Now, before God ever got to the description of his instrument of judgment, which we come to find out is actually the Babylonian Empire, the Babylonian army, the Chaldeans.

  80. He said enough in verse 5.

  81. He said enough in verse 5 to strike plenty of fear into the hearts of the Jews.

  82. And I want you to consider with me just here in this verse how this would have grabbed their attention.

  83. Look at this very first phrase.

  84. Behold among the heathen and marvel, God says.

  85. Heathen there is just a reference to nations.

  86. God is saying, look out among the nations and marvel at what I'm about to do.

  87. God informed Habakkuk and subsequently the entire nation that they would have to look beyond their borders to actually see his work.

  88. And of course, his intent wasn't for them to marvel solely at the strength of their captors.

  89. He wanted them to look beyond the instrument of judgment and marvel at the one who raised them up.

  90. He wanted them not to fear the Babylonians.

  91. He wanted them to fear God.

  92. And so right from the beginning, as God begins to answer, he immediately says,

  93. you're going to have to stop looking here at Israel and look outside of the nation to see what I'm beginning to do.

  94. And then in this next phrase, he said, because I'm working a work.

  95. And then he says, in your days.

  96. But consider how that would have come across to these people.

  97. This was not a potential judgment.

  98. Nor was this a prophecy that was to be fulfilled in the distant future.

  99. This was a cataclysmic event that was going to happen in the days of these people.

  100. They would be the ones to face the judgment that God was bringing.

  101. And they would not be able to escape it.

  102. It was coming quickly.

  103. And it would be there in just a matter of months after God delivered this prophecy through Habakkuk.

  104. And then at the very end, he says, this work, you will not believe, though it be told you.

  105. Not only is this indicative of the potential rejection of Habakkuk's message, the fact that people wouldn't believe it,

  106. but it hints towards the enormous scale of God's judgment.

  107. So fierce was this army that God was raising up that many would believe Habakkuk's message to actually be impossible.

  108. And just imagine, as just this very first verse is delivered in the message,

  109. the fear potentially that could have begun to settle in.

  110. God was raising up a power outside of the nation.

  111. This judgment was going to come in their days.

  112. And it was going to be so great that most people wouldn't even believe it.

  113. The essence of Habakkuk's question in the first four verses was,

  114. God, why aren't you doing anything?

  115. And the essence of God's response in verses 5 through 11 is,

  116. I never actually stopped working.

  117. I've been working all along.

  118. And by the way, Habakkuk, you might want to sit down,

  119. because what I'm about to tell you is going to blow your mind.

  120. God had never stopped working.

  121. God had actually been at work long before Habakkuk had even discovered

  122. that there was a problem about which he needed to so passionately pray.

  123. And we come to understand just from that point and that perspective

  124. that no matter what the nature of our cry is,

  125. no matter what the nature of your cry is today,

  126. rest assured that God does not only hear your prayer,

  127. but he is working.

  128. And he was working long before you ever even prayed.

  129. God is always working.

  130. Now, it's significant to know that Paul actually quotes this verse for us

  131. in the New Testament in the book of Acts.

  132. Obviously, the context of God's answer is a warning of a coming judgment.

  133. And the apostle Paul makes that connection

  134. and applies it to the unbelieving Jews in his day.

  135. In fact, why don't you take your Bible and turn there with me.

  136. The book of Acts chapter 13.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  137. And let's begin reading at verse number 40.

  138. Acts chapter 13 and verse 40.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  139. Paul has been preaching about Jesus and his death and his resurrection

  140. and the necessity to trust Christ for salvation.

  141. And he's been preaching to the Jews in the synagogues.

  142. In verse 40, he says,

  143. Beware, therefore, lest that come upon you which was spoken of in the prophets.

  144. And then verse 41 is the quote.

  145. He's quoting the Greek translation of the Hebrew text in Habakkuk chapter 1 and verse 5.

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  146. He says,

  147. Behold ye despisers, wonder and perish, for I work a work in your days,

  148. a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

  149. Now, Paul's purpose was to warn the Jews that rejecting the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ

  150. was equivalent to Judah's departure from God in Habakkuk's day.

  151. God was going to judge them in a way that they wouldn't believe.

  152. And the two are paralleled perfectly together.

  153. In Habakkuk's day, there was great rejection and departure from God.

  154. And God was sending a judgment that these people just wouldn't believe that God would do.

  155. And then in Paul's day, there was a departure from God in terms of faith in Jesus Christ among his own people.

  156. And Paul brings up Habakkuk's prophecy and he says,

  157. Beware, lest the same thing that happened in Habakkuk's day happens now.

  158. God's going to bring a judgment and it's going to be so great of a judgment

  159. that you wouldn't even believe it, though I'm telling you now.

  160. And then we come to find out that the Jews, just within a few days,

  161. had continued to reject the message of Jesus.

  162. And Paul revealed a glimpse of what that judgment would be.

  163. Look with me at verse 45.

  164. You're still in Acts 13.

  165. Look at verse 45.

  166. Here's what happens with Paul and Barnabas.

  167. When the Jews saw that the multitude of the Gentiles, that is,

  168. they were filled with envy.

  169. And they spake against those things which were spoken by Paul,

  170. contradicting and blaspheming.

  171. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold and said,

  172. It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you.

  173. But seeing he put it from you and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life,

  174. we turn to the Gentiles, for so hath the Lord commanded.

  175. God had been long suffering to the Jews for many years,

  176. but this marked the official turning point in Paul's ministry away from Israel and to the Gentiles.

  177. And this is significant to us because Paul's quote here helps lay the groundwork for the doctrine of justification by faith alone in Jesus Christ.

  178. In fact, Robertson is helpful here.

  179. He says,

  180. Now, I don't want to get ahead of myself because we're going to get here as we study chapter 2.

  181. But as we understand the layout of the book of Habakkuk and what the whole point of the book is,

  182. in chapter 1, we see God pouring out this judgment on Israel, who did not expect this kind of judgment.

  183. God had made a covenant that he was going to bring them into the promised land,

  184. and they never believed that God would actually remove them from that promised land.

  185. But that's exactly what he was doing.

  186. And the question then becomes, especially in Habakkuk's mind,

  187. How, God, can you judge Israel in this way?

  188. How can you raise them up and judge your people, your covenant nation in this way?

  189. And the whole point is that salvation and being God's people was never about nationality.

  190. And it was never about a system.

  191. And it was never about religious works and certain deeds.

  192. It was always about faith and following God and loving him and obeying him,

  193. as we see demonstrated in chapter 2.

  194. When God essentially answers Habakkuk again, it says,

  195. All sin will be judged, and the only ones who will be justified are those who live by faith,

  196. those who follow God.

  197. And so Robertson says,

  198. By the devastation of those who thought themselves to be righteous by their deeds,

  199. the foundation is laid for the message of justification by faith alone.

  200. And so it's significant that we notice Paul's quotation in this verse

  201. and how it bears in our understanding of even Habakkuk's book.

  202. But then before we move on from verse 5, we need to consider that God's work was not limited

  203. only to his instrument of judgment.

  204. Now I want you to think about this because this is so encouraging.

  205. While he was working to raise up the Babylonians,

  206. while he was in charge and instrumental in bringing about this weapon of judgment

  207. against the sin of the nation,

  208. he was also preparing the faithful people of Judah to witness of his power

  209. and to be his covenant remnant while in captivity.

  210. Now I want you to turn again in your Bible.

  211. This time turn to Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  212. It's just a few pages back from where you are there in Habakkuk.

  213. And I want you to go to Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  214. Now hang tight.

  215. There's a reason we're going here,

  216. and I think that you're going to be encouraged by it.

  217. Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  218. Look with me at verse number 1.

  219. Daniel writes,

  220. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah.

  221. That's significant.

  222. We know that Habakkuk is writing this prophecy during the reign of Jehoiakim.

  223. So somewhere in between the death of King Josiah

  224. and three years into Jehoiakim's reign,

  225. Habakkuk is praying this prayer,

  226. and God is delivering this message of judgment through his prophet.

  227. And here's what happened.

  228. In the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim,

  229. came Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem and besieged it.

  230. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand

  231. with part of the vessels of the house of God.

  232. Now I want you to skip down to verse 3.

  233. And the king spake unto Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs,

  234. that he should bring certain of the children of Israel,

  235. and of the king's seed, and of the prince's children,

  236. in whom was no blemish, but well favored and skillful in all wisdom.

  237. And I want you to look down with me to verse 6 now.

  238. Now among these were of the children of Judah,

  239. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

  240. unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names.

  241. For he gave unto Daniel the name Belteshazzar,

  242. and unto Hananiah of Shadrach,

  243. and to Mishael of Meshach,

  244. and to Azariah of Abednego.

  245. God had not abandoned his remnant while preparing the judgment.

  246. At the same time that he was strengthening Nebuchadnezzar's army,

  247. God was working in the hearts of the obscure parents of Daniel,

  248. and Hananiah, and Mishael, and Azariah,

  249. so that they would train up their kids in the ways of God,

  250. so that they would teach them the word,

  251. so that they would protect them from the wickedness around them.

  252. And at the same time that God is working on this massive scale

  253. for this army of the Babylonians,

  254. over here in relative obscurity,

  255. in an unknown place, and in an unknown home,

  256. God was working in the hearts of parents

  257. to sit their son Daniel down,

  258. and to teach him the Bible,

  259. and to raise him up in the things of the Lord.

  260. Now consider how seemingly insignificant this work was,

  261. but God used it in such a mighty way in Babylon.

  262. Think about it.

  263. At the end of chapter number one of Daniel,

  264. we see that these four young men were immediately shown

  265. to have God's favor above all the other young men in Babylon.

  266. What a witness that was right off the bat to King Nebuchadnezzar.

  267. Think about Daniel's three friends.

  268. We often know them to be Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  269. Nebuchadnezzar had made this idol.

  270. He had commanded that everybody bow to it,

  271. but they refused to bow.

  272. Nebuchadnezzar gets angry.

  273. He heats up the furnace of fire,

  274. seven times hotter than what it normally was,

  275. so hot that just opening up the doors of the furnace

  276. killed the two men that went to go throw Shadrach, Meshach,

  277. and Abednego into the fire.

  278. And as soon as they threw them in there,

  279. Nebuchadnezzar looks in,

  280. and he sees that they have not been consumed,

  281. that they're walking in the fire.

  282. Not only is there three of them,

  283. there's a fourth one that looks like the Son of God,

  284. and they are in the fire,

  285. but they have not been consumed and not been burned.

  286. What a witness that is of God's graciousness

  287. to his covenant people.

  288. What a protection.

  289. What a sign that was to the wicked King Nebuchadnezzar.

  290. As we continue to study the book of Daniel,

  291. we see that Daniel was the mouthpiece of God's judgment.

  292. And so over here,

  293. we see that God is working in this really large-scale way

  294. to bring judgment.

  295. But then over here,

  296. amongst people that didn't even know

  297. what was going on outside,

  298. there were parents that were investing in their kids,

  299. and God was using that investment.

  300. He was working in their hearts

  301. because he was going to use them in a magnificent way.

  302. Yes, God is always working.

  303. While Habakkuk was asking God why he was silent and inactive,

  304. God was not only raising up his instrument of judgment,

  305. but he was also preparing his remnant

  306. to proclaim his glory and his power and his covenant

  307. while in the midst of captivity.

  308. He is always working.

  309. He's working out his judgment against the wicked,

  310. and he's working out his goodness

  311. for those that love and follow him.

  312. So don't be distraught in your prayer today.

  313. You may not understand all that God is doing,

  314. and you may not understand why God is doing it

  315. the way that he is,

  316. but you can be certain that he is working

  317. for the good of his people and the praise of his glory.

  318. God is always at work.

  319. Daniel's parents would never see the fruit of their labor.

  320. It's likely that they would have been killed

  321. in the midst of this captivity,

  322. but God was working through them anyways,

  323. and he used them in an awesome way.

  324. God is always working.

  325. Not only do we see he's always at work,

  326. but secondly, in verses six through 10,

  327. we see clearly that God is the sovereign Lord of history.

  328. He is the sovereign Lord of history.

  329. Now we've come to the description of God's judgment,

  330. and we immediately hear echoes

  331. of what was once God's power at work

  332. in the armies of Israel.

  333. Even the wicked people in Israel

  334. would have taken great national pride

  335. in the historical conquest of Canaan

  336. and all the historical battles that Israel had won

  337. in spite of all the odds being stacked against them.

  338. So imagine their thoughts

  339. when God uses such a similar description

  340. to speak of Babylon.

  341. Let me just point out a few things about that.

  342. Look in verse six with me.

  343. God says that they're gonna march through

  344. the breadth of the land.

  345. Not only does this speak to the size of the coming army,

  346. but it reflects the notion of total conquest.

  347. They were gonna take the entire nation.

  348. Israel had at one time been the conquerors,

  349. but now they would be conquered.

  350. Think about how God had promised this

  351. in Leviticus chapter 20 to the nation of Israel.

    Leviticus 20 chapter mention

  352. God said, I have said unto you,

  353. ye shall inherit the land,

  354. and I will give it unto you to possess it.

  355. That is, the whole land.

  356. It was to be Israel's,

  357. but now they weren't the conquerors.

  358. They were to be conquered.

  359. Look again at verse six.

  360. They will possess dwelling places

  361. that are not their own.

  362. And this was exactly the blessing

  363. that was bestowed upon the nation of Israel

  364. after they took possession of the promised land.

  365. Consider Deuteronomy chapter six.

  366. And it shall be when the Lord thy God

  367. shall have brought thee into the land

  368. which he swear unto Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

  369. that he will give you great and goodly cities

  370. which thou buildest not,

  371. houses full of all good things

  372. which thou fillest not,

  373. wells dig that thou diggest not,

  374. vineyards and olive trees

  375. which thou plantest not.

  376. This was a blessing that was bestowed

  377. upon the covenant nation,

  378. but now this same description

  379. was being given to their enemy,

  380. to a wicked nation.

  381. They would now be the ones that come in

  382. and possess dwellings that are not their own.

  383. Look at verse seven.

  384. They're terrible and dreadful.

  385. Everyone would tremble at the news

  386. of the conquering Babylonians

  387. in the same way that they had once trembled at Israel.

  388. Think about Joshua chapter five, verse number one.

  389. The kings of the Amorites

  390. and the kings of the Canaanites,

  391. their hearts melted

  392. and their spirit was not in them anymore

  393. because of the children of Israel.

  394. Now Israel was experiencing that feeling.

  395. Look again at verse 10.

  396. They will deride every stronghold.

  397. They will mock at and laugh at every fortification.

  398. No fortification was gonna be able

  399. to prevent this enemy.

  400. And one need only to reflect on the battle of Jericho

  401. to consider how God had once favored Israel

  402. in the same way.

  403. Now the warning here is abundantly clear.

  404. Judgment is coming.

  405. Judgment's coming.

  406. God will not wait forever.

  407. Though he is long suffering,

  408. judgment will eventually come

  409. to all who refuse to follow Christ.

  410. In Genesis chapter six and verse three in Noah's day,

  411. God said, my spirit shall not always strive with man.

  412. In other words, there's gonna come a day

  413. when enough is enough.

  414. And in Genesis chapter six,

  415. it would be 120 years

  416. that God was gonna give the people to repent.

  417. And Noah preached and Noah proclaimed

  418. the message of God, but they did not repent.

  419. And they were swept away in the judgment.

  420. Isaiah chapter 55 again says,

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  421. seek ye the Lord while he may be found,

  422. indicating that there's a time

  423. when you will not be able to find him.

  424. Call you upon him while he is near.

  425. Let the wicked forsake his way

  426. and the unrighteous man his thoughts.

  427. Let him return unto the Lord

  428. and he will have mercy on him.

  429. Let him turn to our God

  430. for he will abundantly pardon.

  431. Though judgment will come,

  432. God is patient

  433. and he allows ample time

  434. for us to turn to him.

  435. If you will only forsake your way

  436. and follow Christ,

  437. what awaits you

  438. is an abundant pardon.

  439. He will forgive your sin.

  440. He will wipe you clean.

  441. You will be his,

  442. but he will not wait forever.

  443. His judgment is coming.

  444. And the time right now

  445. is the only time

  446. that you have to repent of your way.

  447. It's the only time

  448. that you have to turn to God.

  449. Eventually, his patience will run out.

  450. Eventually, God will say,

  451. enough is enough

  452. and your period and your window

  453. will be closed.

  454. Judgment will be here.

  455. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 6,

  456. behold, now is the accepted time.

  457. Behold, now is the day of salvation.

  458. The writer of Hebrews

  459. in chapter 4 and verse 7

  460. quotes David when he says,

  461. today, if you hear his voice,

  462. do not harden your heart.

  463. Listen to me, friend.

  464. If you're watching this video

  465. and you are not a true believer,

  466. I'm not asking if you take Christianity

  467. as your labeled religion.

  468. I'm not asking if you go to church.

  469. I'm saying,

  470. have you really turned

  471. from your wicked ways

  472. and truly trusted in Christ alone

  473. for salvation?

  474. If you have not done that,

  475. judgment is coming for you,

  476. but mercy awaits you

  477. if you will but cry out to God

  478. and turn from your ways

  479. and follow him.

  480. But he will not wait forever.

  481. Sin always loses the blessing of God.

  482. Always.

  483. And if you're a believer,

  484. nothing can take away your salvation,

  485. but God will not allow your sin

  486. to go without consequence.

  487. You cannot expect in Christianity

  488. and in your walk with God

  489. to live however it is you please

  490. and not have to deal

  491. with the repercussions.

  492. Just like David with his sin

  493. with Bathsheba and Uriah,

  494. God will remove his blessing

  495. from your life

  496. and he will allow you

  497. to reap the consequences of your sin.

  498. Sin always loses the blessing of God.

  499. And the nation of Israel

  500. heard that loud and clear

  501. in the message of Habakkuk.

  502. Now that's a bit about

  503. God's warning of judgment,

  504. but we cannot ignore the fact

  505. that all of this came

  506. from the divine hand of God.

  507. He does not sit passively

  508. as life for us progresses.

  509. He is in sovereign control

  510. of all that takes place,

  511. including the monumental events

  512. of history.

  513. God took complete responsibility

  514. for the rise and fall

  515. of the Babylonians.

  516. Look back with me

  517. at Habakkuk chapter one,

  518. verse six.

  519. He said,

  520. I raise up the Chaldeans.

  521. God was taking responsibility.

  522. This was in his plan

  523. and his purpose

  524. and his control.

  525. And he did not arbitrarily

  526. choose a nation

  527. that had already been established.

  528. He was totally responsible

  529. for their rise

  530. and only the power of God

  531. could perform such a feat

  532. in the way that he did.

  533. And again,

  534. Robertson is so helpful here.

  535. He says,

  536. this whole international escapade

  537. underscores the prominence

  538. of the divine hand

  539. in raising them up

  540. and also bringing them down.

  541. Who would believe

  542. that a virtually non-existent entity

  543. could conquer the old capital

  544. of Assyria in 614,

  545. Nineveh in 612,

  546. Haran in 610,

  547. and rout the armies

  548. of Pharaoh Necho

  549. at Carchemish in 605.

  550. They became the world rulers

  551. of Babylonia,

  552. Assyria,

  553. Syria,

  554. Palestine,

  555. and Egypt

  556. when 20 years previously

  557. they hardly were known

  558. to exist.

  559. Yet their energy dissipated

  560. almost as rapidly

  561. so that they were easily overcome

  562. by Cyrus,

  563. king of Persia

  564. in 539,

  565. just in time

  566. to fulfill the prophecy

  567. of Jeremiah

  568. concerning Israel's return

  569. in 70 years.

  570. Astounding indeed

  571. are the ways of God

  572. among the nations,

  573. not by their own instinct,

  574. but by the hidden impulse

  575. of God

  576. do the nations

  577. rise and fall.

  578. Think about God's

  579. sovereign control

  580. over the events

  581. of history.

  582. He raises up

  583. the Babylonians

  584. and at the same time

  585. that he's raising them up

  586. and allowing them

  587. to conquer the world,

  588. he's raising up Cyrus

  589. and the Persians

  590. to immediately be

  591. his instrument

  592. of judgment

  593. on Babylon

  594. and be his instrument

  595. of blessing

  596. on his own nation

  597. as he allows

  598. the people of Israel

  599. 70 years later

  600. to come back

  601. to the promised land.

  602. What a God that is.

  603. The scriptures are clear

  604. that he is truly

  605. the Lord of history.

  606. Nothing happens

  607. apart from God's

  608. divine determination.

  609. He is in control

  610. of all things.

  611. It is he

  612. that raises up kings

  613. and puts them down.

  614. It is he

  615. that is in control

  616. of the circumstances

  617. of your life

  618. as well.

  619. Proverbs 21

  620. and verse 1

  621. The king's heart

  622. is in the hand

  623. of the Lord.

  624. As the rivers

  625. of water

  626. he turneth it

  627. whithersoever he will.

  628. Daniel chapter 2

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  629. and verse 20

  630. Blessed be the name

  631. of God

  632. forever and ever

  633. for wisdom

  634. and might are his

  635. and he changes

  636. the times

  637. and the seasons.

  638. He removes kings

  639. and he sets up kings.

  640. Nothing is out

  641. of his control.

  642. His ways may be mysterious

  643. but the Lord of history

  644. is to be trusted

  645. and worshipped.

  646. City of Light

  647. is one of my favorite

  648. musical groups

  649. throughout of a church

  650. in Australia

  651. and they wrote this song

  652. called Ancient of Days

  653. and the first verse

  654. goes like this

  655. Though the nations rage

  656. kingdoms rise and fall

  657. listen

  658. there is still

  659. one king

  660. reigning over all

  661. so I will not fear

  662. though this truth

  663. remains

  664. that my God

  665. is the Ancient

  666. of Days.

  667. The chorus goes on

  668. to say

  669. none above him

  670. none before him

  671. all of time

  672. in his hands

  673. for his throne

  674. it shall remain

  675. and ever stand

  676. all the power

  677. all the glory

  678. I will trust

  679. in his name

  680. for my God

  681. is the Ancient

  682. of Days.

  683. So we clearly see

  684. not only is God

  685. always working

  686. but he is indeed

  687. the Lord of history

  688. and it is to this

  689. great God

  690. who is sovereign

  691. over all

  692. that we will face

  693. judgment

  694. it is to him

  695. that we must repent

  696. and turn

  697. before it's too late

  698. and it is to him

  699. that we must give

  700. all of our worship

  701. and all of our praise

  702. and all of our attention

  703. and then finally

  704. we see that God

  705. has a purpose

  706. God has

  707. a purpose

  708. now I told you

  709. that I was going to

  710. quote Martin Lloyd-Jones

  711. a number of times

  712. and I have only done it

  713. once up to this point

  714. but I have several things

  715. that I just want to read

  716. to you that

  717. he is so helpful

  718. in this book

  719. in fact

  720. I want to encourage you

  721. to get the book

  722. it is called

  723. From Fear to Faith

  724. you can get it

  725. from InterVarsity Press

  726. it would be an encouragement

  727. to you

  728. but he said

  729. great powers

  730. have been raised up

  731. and have conquered

  732. for a while

  733. but they have always

  734. become drunk

  735. with their own success

  736. and suddenly

  737. they in turn

  738. have found themselves

  739. cast down

  740. the real significance

  741. of history

  742. never dawns

  743. upon them

  744. the Chaldeans

  745. thought that

  746. their conquest

  747. was a result

  748. of their own strength

  749. in fact look with me

  750. at verse 11

  751. then shall his mind

  752. be changed

  753. and he shall pass over

  754. and offend

  755. this is just speaking

  756. of the actual defeat

  757. of Israel

  758. imputing this

  759. his power

  760. unto his God

  761. in other words

  762. he was saying

  763. I am God

  764. Nebuchadnezzar

  765. set himself up

  766. as a God

  767. and demanded

  768. to be worshipped

  769. because of this

  770. demonstration of power

  771. as he

  772. marched across

  773. the entire world

  774. at that point

  775. he failed

  776. to see

  777. that he was

  778. nothing more

  779. than a tool

  780. in the hand

  781. of God

  782. indeed

  783. God always

  784. has a purpose

  785. and it has

  786. to do

  787. exclusively

  788. with his kingdom

  789. again

  790. Lloyd-Jones

  791. says

  792. the key

  793. to the history

  794. of the world

  795. is the kingdom

  796. of God

  797. the story

  798. of other nations

  799. mentioned in the

  800. Old Testament

  801. is relevant

  802. only as it

  803. bears upon

  804. the destiny

  805. of Israel

  806. and ultimately

  807. history today

  808. is relevant

  809. only as it

  810. bears upon

  811. the history

  812. of the Christian

  813. church

  814. what really

  815. matters

  816. in the world

  817. is God's

  818. kingdom

  819. think about

  820. Romans chapter

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  821. 9

  822. and verse 17

  823. for the scripture

  824. says Paul writes

  825. unto Pharaoh

  826. even for this

  827. same purpose

  828. God says

  829. have I raised

  830. thee up

  831. that I might

  832. show my

  833. power in thee

  834. and that my

  835. name might be

  836. declared

  837. throughout all

  838. the earth

  839. Pharaoh thought

  840. he was in

  841. charge

  842. Nebuchadnezzar

  843. thought he

  844. was in charge

  845. Cyrus thought

  846. he was in

  847. charge

  848. but it was

  849. God who

  850. was at work

  851. it was he

  852. that was affecting

  853. their hearts

  854. and it was his

  855. purposes

  856. that were being

  857. accomplished

  858. considered his

  859. divine purpose

  860. being worked

  861. out

  862. amidst the

  863. establishment

  864. of ancient

  865. Rome

  866. and Roman

  867. society

  868. it was through

  869. his work

  870. in raising

  871. up Rome

  872. that salvation

  873. was provided

  874. through Jesus

  875. Christ

  876. God might have

  877. been silent

  878. in that 400

  879. year gap

  880. between Malachi

  881. and Matthew

  882. but despite

  883. his silence

  884. in the nation

  885. God was working

  886. and he was

  887. raising up

  888. the Romans

  889. so that he

  890. could bring

  891. his son

  892. to provide

  893. redemption

  894. for us

  895. again Lloyd

  896. Jones says

  897. it was when

  898. the fullness

  899. of time

  900. was come

  901. that God

  902. sent forth

  903. his son

  904. he allowed

  905. the great

  906. philosophers

  907. with their

  908. clarification

  909. of thought

  910. to come

  911. first

  912. then emerged

  913. the Romans

  914. famous for

  915. ordered government

  916. building their

  917. roads and

  918. spreading their

  919. wonderful legal

  920. system throughout

  921. the world

  922. it was after

  923. this that

  924. God sent

  925. forth his

  926. son

  927. God had

  928. planned

  929. it all

  930. all things

  931. are under

  932. his divine

  933. control

  934. in order

  935. that he

  936. might work

  937. out his

  938. saving

  939. purposes

  940. for his

  941. people

  942. think of

  943. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  944. chapter 1

  945. and verse 11

  946. in Christ

  947. we have

  948. obtained

  949. an inheritance

  950. being

  951. predestinated

  952. according to

  953. the purpose

  954. of him

  955. who worketh

  956. all things

  957. according to

  958. the counsel

  959. of his

  960. own

  961. will

  962. all things

  963. related to

  964. salvation

  965. are being

  966. sovereignly

  967. worked out

  968. according to

  969. the counsel

  970. of God's

  971. own

  972. will

  973. think of

  974. 2nd Timothy

  975. chapter 1

  976. and verse 9

  977. Christ has

  978. saved us

  979. and he has

  980. called us

  981. with a holy

  982. calling

  983. not according

  984. to our

  985. works

  986. but according

  987. to his

  988. own

  989. purpose

  990. and grace

  991. which was

  992. given in

  993. Christ Jesus

  994. before the

  995. world ever

  996. began

  997. God had a

  998. plan set

  999. forth

  1000. and everything

  1001. you see

  1002. happening in

  1003. history

  1004. whether it

  1005. was ancient

  1006. history

  1007. or whether

  1008. it's modern

  1009. history

  1010. is all

  1011. within the

  1012. sovereign

  1013. control of

  1014. God

  1015. that he

  1016. might work

  1017. out his

  1018. purposes

  1019. among his

  1020. purpose

  1021. among his

  1022. people

  1023. God's work

  1024. among the

  1025. nations

  1026. is to

  1027. provide

  1028. redemption

  1029. for mankind

  1030. and the

  1031. events of

  1032. your life

  1033. are being

  1034. orchestrated

  1035. by his

  1036. divine

  1037. hand

  1038. even now

  1039. he is

  1040. calling

  1041. sinners

  1042. to repent

  1043. and receive

  1044. his grace

  1045. through Jesus

  1046. Christ

  1047. and this

  1048. is his

  1049. ultimate

  1050. purpose

  1051. 1st Timothy

  1052. 1 15

  1053. tells us

  1054. Christ

  1055. Jesus

  1056. came into

  1057. the world

  1058. to save

  1059. sinners

  1060. and if

  1061. you're

  1062. watching this

  1063. video today

  1064. and you

  1065. don't know

  1066. Christ

  1067. and you

  1068. don't believe

  1069. him

  1070. God has

  1071. orchestrated

  1072. the events

  1073. of your

  1074. life for

  1075. this moment

  1076. to hear

  1077. his gospel

  1078. preached

  1079. if you

  1080. would but

  1081. trust

  1082. him

  1083. and turn

  1084. from your

  1085. own way

  1086. what awaits

  1087. you is

  1088. abundant

  1089. pardon

  1090. and mercy

  1091. but he

  1092. will not

  1093. wait long

  1094. his judgment

  1095. is coming

  1096. and he

  1097. is sovereign

  1098. over all

  1099. things

  1100. and nothing

  1101. can stop

  1102. his

  1103. purposes

  1104. so turn

  1105. to him

  1106. whether it

  1107. be through

  1108. a worldwide

  1109. pandemic

  1110. a contentious

  1111. election season

  1112. or any

  1113. number of

  1114. events

  1115. taking place

  1116. in our

  1117. lifetime

  1118. God

  1119. is working

  1120. he is in

  1121. control

  1122. and he

  1123. has

  1124. a plan

  1125. finally

  1126. Lloyd-Jones

  1127. says

  1128. what God

  1129. is permitting

  1130. in the church

  1131. and in the

  1132. world today

  1133. is related

  1134. to his

  1135. great purpose

  1136. for his

  1137. own church

  1138. and kingdom

  1139. we

  1140. Christians

  1141. should therefore

  1142. judge

  1143. every event

  1144. in the light

  1145. of God's

  1146. great

  1147. eternal

  1148. and glorious

  1149. purpose

  1150. church

  1151. let's keep

  1152. our focus

  1153. on the

  1154. kingdom

  1155. God

  1156. is in

  1157. control

  1158. of the

  1159. pandemic

  1160. only he

  1161. knows how

  1162. serious it

  1163. actually is

  1164. and he

  1165. is using

  1166. it for

  1167. his purpose

  1168. don't get

  1169. wrapped up

  1170. in the

  1171. chaos

  1172. of the

  1173. pandemic

  1174. keep

  1175. your eyes

  1176. on the

  1177. kingdom

  1178. it is

  1179. God

  1180. who will

  1181. raise up

  1182. a president

  1183. and it is

  1184. God

  1185. who will

  1186. put down

  1187. a president

  1188. ultimately

  1189. our hope

  1190. is not

  1191. in the

  1192. White House

  1193. it is in

  1194. the sovereign

  1195. control

  1196. of God

  1197. don't get

  1198. caught up

  1199. in the

  1200. politics

  1201. trust

  1202. God

  1203. keep

  1204. your eyes

  1205. on the

  1206. kingdom

  1207. there will

  1208. be times

  1209. of loss

  1210. don't get

  1211. in such

  1212. despair

  1213. over loss

  1214. that you

  1215. lose sight

  1216. of the

  1217. kingdom

  1218. God is

  1219. working all

  1220. of these

  1221. things out

  1222. for his

  1223. purpose

  1224. they are

  1225. but tools

  1226. in his

  1227. hand

  1228. put your

  1229. trust in

  1230. him

  1231. for he is

  1232. working all

  1233. things

  1234. for your

  1235. good

  1236. as Romans

  1237. 8 reminds

  1238. us

  1239. and we know

  1240. that all

  1241. things work

  1242. together for

  1243. good to

  1244. them that

  1245. love God

  1246. to them

  1247. who are

  1248. the called

  1249. according

  1250. to his

  1251. purpose

  1252. and Paul

  1253. goes on to

  1254. say that

  1255. purpose

  1256. is to

  1257. conform you

  1258. and me

  1259. into the

  1260. image

  1261. of his

  1262. son

  1263. Jesus

  1264. Christ

  1265. what's

  1266. happening

  1267. right now

  1268. the fact

  1269. that we

  1270. haven't been

  1271. able to

  1272. gather as

  1273. a church

  1274. for six

  1275. weeks

  1276. maybe

  1277. longer

  1278. all of

  1279. that

  1280. God is

  1281. using

  1282. this

  1283. to

  1284. fashion

  1285. us

  1286. into

  1287. the

  1288. likeness

  1289. of

  1290. his

  1291. son

  1292. the

  1293. sickness

  1294. the

  1295. hurt

  1296. the

  1297. potential

  1298. job

  1299. loss

  1300. the

  1301. economy

  1302. all of

  1303. these

  1304. things

  1305. they are

  1306. serving

  1307. God's

  1308. purpose

  1309. you can

  1310. trust

  1311. him

  1312. trust

  1313. the

  1314. sovereign

  1315. God

  1316. so I

  1317. will not

  1318. fear

  1319. for this

  1320. truth

  1321. remains

  1322. that

  1323. my

  1324. God

  1325. is

  1326. the

  1327. ancient

  1328. of

  1329. days
