  7. Well, I want to invite you to take your Bibles and turn with me to Habakkuk chapter 2.

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  8. Habakkuk chapter 2 is where we continue in our study today.

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  9. We're going to cover the entire chapter with the exception of the first verse.

  10. So we'll begin reading at verse 2 and go all the way down to verse 20.

  11. But we're going to spend most of our time on verses 2, 3, and 4.

  12. That's really where the meat of this particular passage is found.

  13. Verses 5 through 20 is what is called a taunt song.

  14. We're going to talk about that a little bit when we get to it.

  15. But it's really just a specific expression of judgment toward this group of individuals.

  16. And we'll talk about that when we get there, but we're not going to spend a lot of time there.

  17. We're going to focus our attention on verses 2, 3, and 4.

  18. Habakkuk chapter 2, verse number 2.

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  19. And the Lord answered me and said,

  20. Write the vision and make it plain upon tables that he may run that readeth it.

  21. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak and not lie.

  22. Though it tarry, wait for it, because it will surely come.

  23. It will not tarry.

  24. Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him, but the just shall live by his faith.

  25. Yea, also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home,

  26. who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied,

  27. but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people.

  28. Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him,

  29. and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his.

  30. How long?

  31. And to him that ladeth himself with thick clay.

  32. Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee,

  33. and thou shalt be for booties unto them?

  34. Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee,

  35. because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.

  36. Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high,

  37. that he may be delivered from the power of evil.

  38. Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast sinned against thy soul.

  39. For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

  40. Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and establisheth a city by iniquity.

  41. Behold, it is not of the Lord of hosts that the people shall labor in the very fire,

  42. and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity.

  43. For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,

  44. as the waters cover the sea.

  45. Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink, and putt thy bottle to him,

  46. and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness.

  47. Thou art filled with shame for glory.

  48. Drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered.

  49. The cup of the Lord's right hand shall be turned unto thee,

  50. and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.

  51. For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee,

  52. and the spoil of beast which made them afraid,

  53. because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land,

  54. of the city, and of all that dwell therein.

  55. What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it,

  56. the molten image, and a teacher of lies,

  57. that the maker of his work trusteth therein to make dumb idols?

  58. Woe unto him that saith to the wood,

  59. Awake, to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach.

  60. Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver,

  61. and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

  62. But the Lord is in his holy temple.

  63. Let all the earth keep silence before him.

  64. The first four weeks of our study of Habakkuk

  65. only covered 18 verses,

  66. and there has been so much to learn

  67. in the dialogue between God and his prophet.

  68. But the passage we study today

  69. is the crucial text of the entire book.

  70. Everything that's been written for us thus far

  71. exists to serve the purpose of this message from God.

  72. After learning that God was raising up the Chaldean Empire

  73. as his instrument of judgment,

  74. Habakkuk had difficulty understanding

  75. how the actions of God

  76. seemed to be inconsistent with the character of God.

  77. With a spirit of worship, humility, and submission,

  78. he issued his question to God

  79. and patiently waited for a reply.

  80. Now, the general confusion of Habakkuk's question,

  81. which is found in verse 13 of chapter one,

  82. is what God addresses in his response.

  83. In fact, let's read that verse together.

  84. Look with me at chapter one in verse 13.

  85. Habakkuk says as a part of this question for God,

  86. thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil

  87. and cannot look on iniquity.

  88. Why then do you look upon them that deal treacherously

  89. and hold your tongue when the wicked devours the man

  90. that is more righteous than he?

  91. We find that as we discovered last week,

  92. this same question plagued Asaph as he wrote in Psalm 73.

  93. He said, behold, these are the ungodly

  94. who prosper in the world, they increase in riches.

  95. It's a common question throughout the scriptures.

  96. Job asked the same question in Job chapter 21.

    Job 21 chapter mention

  97. David asked this question in some of his Psalms.

  98. And it all boils down to how can you as a holy God

  99. not do something about the sin that we see?

  100. How is it that the wicked around us seems to be exalted?

  101. How is it that the sinful around us seems to prosper

  102. while your own people are in despair?

  103. And though not given in the way that we would usually hope,

  104. God's answer as we study this book

  105. and as we study Psalm 73 and as we study the book of Job,

  106. God's answer brings great resolution

  107. and peace to the hearts of these men.

  108. But it is here that we must take time to recognize

  109. the way in which God chooses to answer our questions.

  110. When we bring our confusion to the Lord in prayer,

  111. we're typically seeking for him to issue an explanation

  112. of his behavior.

  113. It's like an itch that cannot be scratched

  114. until every single facet of our perplexity is explained.

  115. For some Christians,

  116. this process actually ends up revealing

  117. a very sinful attitude and spirit to the Lord

  118. that shows a lack of trust in God.

  119. Rather than assuming God's perfection and righteousness

  120. when they bring their question to God,

  121. they actually bring their question

  122. demanding that God prove that he is righteous

  123. and that he is perfect and that he is good.

  124. And there's a clear distinction.

  125. The same question can be asked,

  126. but the attitude behind it can determine

  127. whether or not a person's heart is right with the Lord

  128. in a right perspective of God's character

  129. or whether it actually reveals a severe lack of faith.

  130. Whenever we bring our questions to the Lord,

  131. we're to come to him with the assumption

  132. that God is right and that he is perfect.

  133. But many times when we come to him,

  134. we're not coming with that understanding

  135. simply seeking an answer.

  136. We're coming demanding that God prove to us

  137. that he's right before we actually trust him.

  138. A question that should come from a spirit of faith

  139. and submission in reality for many people

  140. is in a spirit of judgment.

  141. Now, I've thought a little bit about this.

  142. What gives us this tendency?

  143. And I do think that perhaps our democratic culture

  144. of Western civilization plays a role

  145. in our sinful spirits toward God.

  146. Let me explain.

  147. We are accustomed to exercising the power

  148. of our individual vote to put people

  149. that we determined are worthy of it

  150. in positions of leadership and authority over us.

  151. And if we're unsatisfied with the way

  152. a particular leader has led,

  153. we exercise that same power and right to vote

  154. to remove them from office

  155. and put somebody else there in their place.

  156. We become the judges

  157. of whether or not a person is performing adequately.

  158. And in this sense, we submit to authority

  159. only as long as that authority submits to us.

  160. We will submit to their position and their leadership

  161. only as long as they lead

  162. based on what we have demanded that they do.

  163. And for this reason,

  164. we refer to these people as public servants.

  165. And I think because we're accustomed

  166. to this relationship between submission and authority,

  167. we often come to our relationship with God in the same way.

  168. But we have not chosen God.

  169. He has chosen us.

  170. We have not voted him into office.

  171. He is the God of creation.

  172. We are not his judge.

  173. He is our God.

  174. He is not our servant.

  175. We are to serve him.

  176. He is righteous, not us.

  177. He owes us nothing.

  178. He owes us no explanation

  179. for why he works in the way that he does.

  180. And any revelation that we have of him and his work

  181. only comes by his own love and grace.

  182. So we are not to come to the Lord

  183. and judge his actions in the way

  184. that we would judge the human actions of a human leader.

  185. We come to the Lord rather in submission to him as God.

  186. And when we bring our perplexity,

  187. it's not to judge him and demand

  188. that he prove to us that he's right.

  189. It's where to come to him with the assumption

  190. that he is God and he is right and he is perfect

  191. and seeking to understand not to accuse.

  192. So because of this relationship with him being God

  193. and us being his servant,

  194. God does not offer explanations.

  195. He does not answer our questions

  196. in the way that we expect.

  197. When it comes to our perplexities,

  198. God deals in promises, not explanations.

  199. Let me say it again.

  200. When it comes to our perplexities and our questions

  201. and our confusions and the prayers that we pray,

  202. God does not answer us on the basis of an explanation.

  203. He answers us with a promise, with a covenant.

  204. He is infinitely more concerned about our faith

  205. than he is about our complete understanding.

  206. His desire is that we trust him

  207. even when we don't understand how and why he's working.

  208. And this is the pattern of God's dealing

  209. all throughout the scriptures.

  210. Think about God's relationship to Abraham.

  211. God comes to him and says,

  212. I'm going to make a great nation.

  213. Your seed is going to bless all other nations.

  214. And Abraham says to God in Genesis 18,

  215. how can I have a son who I'm so old

  216. and Sarah is well beyond childbearing years?

  217. And what did God say?

  218. He didn't give him an explanation

  219. that explained the physiology

  220. of how he was going to make it work

  221. and how it was going to come to be.

  222. God didn't do anything like that.

  223. What did God say?

  224. Genesis 18.

  225. He says, is anything too hard for God?

  226. Abraham brings his question to the Lord.

  227. He's seeking for an explanation.

  228. God doesn't provide an explanation.

  229. He provides a promise.

  230. Is anything too hard for God?

  231. In other words, God looks at Abraham

  232. and he says, believe me, Abraham.

  233. You don't have to understand.

  234. Just trust me.

  235. Think about Moses when God came to him

  236. and spoke through the burning bush

  237. and he told him that he wanted him to go

  238. and speak to Pharaoh

  239. and deliver the people of Israel from Egypt.

  240. Moses argued with God

  241. and there came a point in the conversation

  242. where he said, how can I,

  243. a man with a speech impediment,

  244. I'm not eloquent at all.

  245. How can I go and stand and speak

  246. before such a ruler?

  247. And God didn't give any explanation

  248. about how he was going to bring Aaron

  249. in on the equation

  250. and how he was going to use these signs

  251. through the staff

  252. and how he was going to allow Moses

  253. to speak in a particular way.

  254. He didn't give any of that.

  255. What did he say to Moses?

  256. He said, Moses, in Exodus 4.11,

  257. who made your mouth?

  258. Who made your mouth, Moses?

  259. In other words, believe me, Moses.

  260. You don't have to understand.

  261. Just trust me.

  262. Think about Gideon.

  263. Gideon was threshing wheat

  264. in a time when Midian was taking over.

  265. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers

  266. had a mast to take over this tribe of Manasseh.

  267. God comes to Gideon and says,

  268. I want to use you to lead the army

  269. and I'm going to make it interesting

  270. by giving you just 300 men to do it.

  271. And Gideon says,

  272. I'm the least in my father's house

  273. and my father's house is the least

  274. in the tribe of Manasseh.

  275. How can you use me?

  276. Why would you ask me to do this, God?

  277. I don't want to do this.

  278. Why would you ask me?

  279. And God doesn't give an explanation.

  280. He doesn't go ahead and tell Gideon,

  281. well, what's going to happen

  282. is you're going to go down the hill

  283. in the middle of the night.

  284. You're going to bang some pots together

  285. and scream out the sword of the Lord

  286. and of Gideon.

  287. And then all of the enemies

  288. are just going to end up killing themselves.

  289. He didn't give him an explanation.

  290. What did he say?

  291. He said to Gideon,

  292. I will be with you.

  293. God doesn't deal in explanations.

  294. He deals in promises.

  295. What about the New Testament?

  296. Remember Thomas asked Jesus,

  297. Lord, we have no idea where you're going.

  298. How can we know the way?

  299. Jesus didn't go into this extensive theological diatribe.

  300. What did he say to Thomas?

  301. He said, Thomas, I am the way.

  302. I am the way.

  303. John 14, 6.

  304. In other words, Thomas,

  305. you don't need an explanation.

  306. Just trust me.

  307. The disciples toward the end of Jesus' time on this earth

  308. said, how will we know when the end is near?

  309. How will we know when your kingdom

  310. is going to be established?

  311. And Jesus gives them a little information.

  312. He says, boys, it's going to get pretty rough,

  313. but let me tell you, no one knows,

  314. but you need to watch and wait.

  315. In other words, just trust me.

  316. I'm coming back.

  317. God doesn't deal in explanations.

  318. He deals in promises.

  319. He is far less concerned with our understanding

  320. than he is with our faith in who he is

  321. and what he has promised.

  322. He's created us with the ability of logic for a reason,

  323. but our capacity of understanding

  324. is limited by God on purpose.

  325. Why?

  326. Because he's far more concerned

  327. that we trust him without understanding

  328. than that we trust him because of understanding.

  329. Instead of providing explanations,

  330. he graces us with his wonderful promises.

  331. And that's exactly what he's doing here for Habakkuk.

  332. Rather than provide a lengthy explanation

  333. that connects all the dots

  334. and provides an explanation for why he's doing it this way

  335. and not another way,

  336. God simply reminds Habakkuk

  337. about this eternal covenant

  338. that he has made with his people.

  339. And he instructs him to share it urgently

  340. and immediately to every generation.

  341. And I want to examine this promise with you today.

  342. Three quick things that we'll say about this covenant.

  343. The first one is we see the significance of the promise.

  344. The significance of the promise.

  345. Look with me again at verse two.

  346. And the Lord answered me and said,

  347. write the vision and make it plain on tables

  348. that he may run that reads it.

  349. Now, when we see Habakkuk in verse one,

  350. it's clear that he was anticipating

  351. God's reply to come with a measure of rebuke.

  352. He seems to have thought that there existed

  353. somewhat of an audacity in the question

  354. that he had just asked at the end of chapter one.

  355. And he expected God to respond strongly.

  356. But that's not how God responds at all.

  357. Consistent with God's nature of love,

  358. he actually responds to Habakkuk very gently.

  359. And it shows and proves once again,

  360. God's great love for those that love and follow him.

  361. The fact that God answered at all

  362. reminds us of his love and care for us,

  363. which is exactly why Peter writes in the New Testament

  364. that we are to cast all of our care upon him.

  365. Why?

  366. Because he cares for us.

  367. God is sympathetic to our cries.

  368. He wants to hear them.

  369. And he doesn't respond with rebuke.

  370. In fact, even in the moments that he rebukes his disciples,

  371. Jesus in the New Testament,

  372. his rebuke is always with tenderness and with gentleness

  373. and with love despite its firm truth.

  374. God deals with us in that way.

  375. It's an example of his love.

  376. And he deals in that way with Habakkuk.

  377. And the significance of this particular promise

  378. and this particular response

  379. is seen in the manner in which God instructed Habakkuk

  380. to record his message.

  381. He told him to write it upon a tablet of stone.

  382. Look with me again at verse two.

  383. Write the vision, make it plain on tables.

  384. That's just a reference to a stone tablet.

  385. There are only a few occasions in the Bible

  386. where God actually makes this command

  387. for his message to be recorded in this way.

  388. Most notably, we see this coming in the 10 commandments.

  389. As Moses went up on Mount Sinai,

  390. God delivered his law to Moses there.

  391. He instructed and he actually did it by his own hand

  392. for the law to be written on stone tablets.

  393. And this was significant.

  394. It's a simple gesture,

  395. but there's two reasons that the way in which God

  396. instructed Habakkuk to record this message

  397. is significant to us and it shows the significance.

  398. The first way is this.

  399. It shows that this is an eternal promise.

  400. The promise God is having Habakkuk write

  401. is an eternal one.

  402. Now the use of stone reveals that this answer

  403. was not meant to serve the people temporarily.

  404. It's an eternal covenant that would echo

  405. throughout every generation.

  406. The message that God was sending through Habakkuk

  407. was not applicable to his experience

  408. with the Chaldeans alone.

  409. The prophecy finds its fulfillment in every generation

  410. before and after Habakkuk.

  411. As Robertson says,

  412. the specific instructions to inscribe the vision

  413. and make it plain on the tablets underscore

  414. its significance not only for the crucial hour

  415. in which Habakkuk lived,

  416. but also for the generations to come.

  417. Now culturally speaking,

  418. any new covenant made between people in Habakkuk's day

  419. was recorded first on stone

  420. and it represented permanency

  421. and it demanded that the promise be kept.

  422. This message of God was to be viewed

  423. in light of eternity,

  424. not just the time of the Chaldean invasion.

  425. So he tells Habakkuk,

  426. not like he told Isaiah to write it on a parchment,

  427. not like he told Jeremiah to write in a book,

  428. he told Habakkuk,

  429. write it on a table of stone.

  430. It is an eternal covenant.

  431. It's an eternal promise.

  432. Secondly, it shows that it's an urgent promise.

  433. It's an urgent promise.

  434. There's a practical note that God gives Habakkuk

  435. about the way in which he's to write on this stone tablet

  436. and it relates to its size.

  437. Look with me again at verse two.

  438. The Lord answered and said,

  439. write the vision and make it plain on a table

  440. that he may run that reads it.

  441. And this is significant.

  442. The tablet was to be large enough

  443. to be clearly read and understood,

  444. but it was to be small enough

  445. to be carried throughout the nation by a runner.

  446. The message was to be clearly presented

  447. and then it was to be immediately proclaimed.

  448. And this indicates for us the urgency of the message.

  449. Pictured here is a herald that would go from town to town,

  450. maybe on horseback or maybe running from town to town

  451. and would cry in the midst of the town,

  452. an urgent message or an important or significant message

  453. that came directly from his king.

  454. The scriptures refer to angels as heralds

  455. and even preachers in the New Testament

  456. are referred to as heralds.

  457. The task is the same for each one of them.

  458. Proclaim the message from your king.

  459. So paired with the eternal nature of this promise,

  460. it becomes plain that its truth

  461. is to be just as urgent today

  462. as it was when it was written.

  463. It's the message of God's judgment against sin

  464. and his offer of salvation

  465. through Jesus Christ that is so urgent.

  466. And listen to me, church.

  467. Church, we are the runners.

  468. We are the heralds.

  469. The task has been given to the church of God

  470. to spread this message.

  471. And he's entrusted us as Lakeside Bible Church

  472. to proclaim this urgent message

  473. to the people of Lake Norman.

  474. That's our mission.

  475. What we do on Sundays when we gather back together,

  476. Lord willing, next Sunday,

  477. what we do when we gather back together

  478. is worship the Lord.

  479. We disciple one another.

  480. But our mission is to take this proclamation

  481. that God is coming to judge sin

  482. and that he provides salvation through Jesus Christ alone.

  483. We are to take this urgent covenant,

  484. this eternal covenant,

  485. and preach it to the people of Cornelius

  486. and Huntersville and Davidson

  487. and anyone else who will hear it

  488. and even those who will not hear it.

  489. Our job is to proclaim the vision of the Lord.

  490. Our proclamation is to be clear

  491. and our spirit is to be urgent

  492. because it is the promise of God that we share.

  493. Our king church has given us a message to proclaim

  494. and it's sinful if we do not go to our neighbor

  495. and to our family and to our community

  496. and proclaim the message of our king.

  497. So we see the significance of the promise.

  498. It was written on a tablet.

  499. It's eternal.

  500. It's urgent.

  501. Secondly, we see the surety of the promise.

  502. The surety of the promise.

  503. Look with me at verse three.

  504. For the vision is yet for an appointed time,

  505. but at the end it shall speak and not lie.

  506. Though it tarry, wait for it

  507. because it will surely come.

  508. It will not tarry.

  509. Now it's here that we have to remember

  510. that Habakkuk is a prophetical book.

  511. And the nature of biblical prophecy

  512. is that it often has a near fulfillment

  513. that foreshadows a future or ultimate fulfillment.

  514. In Habakkuk's case,

  515. the near fulfillment is the destruction of Babylon

  516. and the restoration of Israel.

  517. But this is only meant to foreshadow

  518. the ultimate fulfillment

  519. of God's judging of the sin of all mankind

  520. and the eternal establishment

  521. of his eternal kingdom.

  522. Habakkuk's prophecy is not only meant

  523. to tell us of God's work 2,500 years ago.

  524. It's also a revelation of how God works now

  525. and in the future.

  526. And we cannot understand God's message to Habakkuk

  527. without seeing it as an eternal message that it is.

  528. Now think of it in the terms of the other covenants

  529. in the Old Testament.

  530. God tells Abraham,

  531. I'm gonna give you a seed

  532. and in that seed all nations of the earth will be blessed.

  533. The near fulfillment of that prophecy

  534. is in his son Isaac.

  535. But the ultimate fulfillment of that prophecy

  536. is in the person of Jesus Christ.

  537. Think about the Davidic covenant.

  538. God comes to David and he says,

  539. I am gonna provide a king.

  540. Your throne will be established forever.

  541. Your seed will rule forever

  542. in an eternal kingdom.

  543. The near fulfillment of that is in his son Solomon.

  544. But the ultimate fulfillment of that

  545. is in the person of Jesus Christ,

  546. not only in his first coming,

  547. but ultimately in his second coming

  548. when he establishes his kingdom.

  549. So when we look at biblical prophecy,

  550. we see God delivers a message.

  551. He uses a near fulfillment

  552. that foreshadows the ultimate

  553. or future fulfillment of his great work.

  554. And we must remember then

  555. that prophecy is not fortune telling.

  556. This is not the guesswork of a man.

  557. This is the true message from the mouth of God

  558. who cannot lie.

  559. Therefore, what we have in Habakkuk's vision

  560. is a message of certainty.

  561. It is sure to come about.

  562. Verse three assumes that many people

  563. will doubt the validity of the message

  564. because of what they will perceive as a delay.

  565. But since it doesn't happen immediately,

  566. they doubt that it will happen at all.

  567. But God reminds us that his work is sure to take place.

  568. Just because it doesn't happen on our timeline

  569. doesn't mean that it won't happen.

  570. And there's two ways that I believe God

  571. reveals the surety of this promise

  572. in verse number three.

  573. The first thing we see is that there is a certain time,

  574. a certain or a sure time.

  575. Look at the first phrase.

  576. For the vision is yet for an appointed time.

  577. Now, the destruction of Babylon

  578. had a specific date set on God's calendar.

  579. It wouldn't take place immediately

  580. following the exile of Judah,

  581. but it would be less than 70 years

  582. when it would find its fulfillment.

  583. And the ultimate fulfillment of this judgment

  584. has yet to take place.

  585. But we are still assured that it will.

  586. It is on God's calendar.

  587. It has an appointed time.

  588. It's not only an appointed judgment,

  589. but it's an appointed salvation.

  590. We have to look at the book of Revelation to see it.

  591. In Revelation chapter 20,

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  592. we see that the ultimate fulfillment

  593. of this prophecy of Habakkuk

  594. is seen in an appointed judgment.

  595. John writes in Revelation 20,

  596. he says,

  597. I saw a great white throne

  598. and him that sat on it,

  599. that is Jesus,

  600. and I saw the dead,

  601. small and great,

  602. stand before God,

  603. and the books were opened.

  604. And another book was opened,

  605. which is the book of life.

  606. And the dead were judged

  607. out of those things

  608. which were written in the books

  609. according to their works,

  610. the way that they lived their lives.

  611. And whosoever was not found

  612. written in the book of life

  613. was cast into the lake of fire.

  614. Listen to me.

  615. There is a coming judgment.

  616. It has already been prophesied

  617. all throughout the scripture.

  618. One day it is appointed.

  619. God has put it on his calendar.

  620. We will all stand

  621. before the judgment seat of Christ.

  622. And when we stand there,

  623. the books will be opened.

  624. And if your name is not

  625. in the Lamb's book of life,

  626. you will be cast

  627. into the eternal lake of fire,

  628. into eternal hell.

  629. That prophecy,

  630. that message from the mouth of God

  631. is true,

  632. and it is certain,

  633. and it is coming.

  634. It's also an appointed salvation.

  635. Immediately after this,

  636. in Revelation 21,

  637. we read of the other part

  638. of this promise.

  639. John says,

  640. I heard a great voice

  641. out of heaven saying,

  642. Behold,

  643. the dwelling place of God

  644. is with men,

  645. and he will dwell with them,

  646. and they shall be his people.

  647. This is a picture

  648. of God's eternal reign.

  649. And God himself

  650. shall be with them,

  651. and he will be their God.

  652. And listen to what he will do.

  653. God will wipe away

  654. all their tears

  655. from their eyes,

  656. and there shall be

  657. no more death

  658. and neither sorrow

  659. nor crying,

  660. neither shall there be

  661. any more pain,

  662. for the former things

  663. are passed away,

  664. the former sinful things,

  665. the curse of this sin,

  666. wretched world

  667. will be passed away.

  668. And he that sat

  669. upon the throne

  670. said,

  671. Behold,

  672. I make all things new.

  673. And he said unto me,

  674. Right.

  675. Why?

  676. Because the words

  677. that I am saying

  678. are faithful

  679. and they are true.

  680. It is said,

  681. there is an appointed time

  682. for judgment.

  683. And for those

  684. that follow Christ,

  685. there is an appointed time

  686. for salvation.

  687. Though it may seem

  688. to delay now,

  689. don't think that God

  690. is not going to fulfill

  691. his promise.

  692. It's on his calendar.

  693. It is coming,

  694. and it's coming

  695. at a certain time.

  696. But then we also see

  697. that what seems like a delay

  698. has a certain purpose.

  699. There's a certain time.

  700. There's a certain purpose.

  701. Look again at verse 3.

  702. Though it tarry,

  703. wait for it.

  704. Because it will surely come,

  705. will not tarry.

  706. Now don't be confused

  707. by the usage

  708. of the word tarry

  709. in this verse.

  710. There's two perspectives

  711. at play here.

  712. The first time

  713. tarry is used

  714. is from the perspective

  715. of man.

  716. And the second time

  717. it's used

  718. is from the perspective

  719. of God.

  720. In other words,

  721. our perspective

  722. views God's fulfillment

  723. of promise

  724. as a delay.

  725. But he views it

  726. as exactly on time.

  727. His work may seem

  728. delayed for us,

  729. but it's working

  730. exactly as he has

  731. divinely determined.

  732. He doesn't work

  733. on our timeline.

  734. He's not bound

  735. by time in the way

  736. that we are bound

  737. by time.

  738. He has said

  739. it's a point in time.

  740. And what may seem

  741. like a delay to us

  742. is right on time

  743. from his perspective.

  744. But that brings up

  745. the question.

  746. If God is so intent

  747. on judging sin

  748. and establishing

  749. his kingdom,

  750. why would he delay

  751. it all?

  752. What's the purpose

  753. in all these years

  754. that have passed?

  755. And the early church

  756. in the New Testament

  757. faced this same question.

  758. They believed

  759. that Jesus Christ's

  760. second coming

  761. was very near,

  762. but because it still

  763. continued,

  764. life still continued

  765. on without Jesus

  766. returning,

  767. many people began

  768. to doubt whether

  769. or not it was

  770. actually true.

  771. So Peter writes

  772. about it.

  773. In fact,

  774. you may want to

  775. turn in your Bibles

  776. to follow along

  777. with me.

  778. 2 Peter 3.

  779. Peter addresses

  780. it first in verse 2,

  781. that ye may be

  782. mindful of the words

  783. which were spoken

  784. before by the

  785. holy prophets,

  786. including Habakkuk,

  787. and of the commandment

  788. of the apostles

  789. of our Lord and Savior,

  790. knowing this first,

  791. that there shall

  792. come in the last days

  793. scoffers walking

  794. after their own lusts,

  795. saying,

  796. where is the promise

  797. of his coming?

  798. For since the fathers

  799. fell asleep,

  800. all things continue

  801. as they were

  802. from beginning

  803. to creation.

  804. There will be those

  805. that will mock,

  806. they will laugh at us,

  807. they will laugh

  808. at the church,

  809. they will laugh

  810. at the Bible,

  811. they will laugh

  812. at this proclamation,

  813. saying,

  814. where is this coming?

  815. You say he's coming soon,

  816. where is it?

  817. And they will doubt it,

  818. and they will mock at it.

  819. But Peter wrote

  820. that what seems

  821. like God's delay

  822. is actually a sign

  823. of his love

  824. and long-suffering

  825. to us.

  826. Look at verse 8.

  827. Beloved,

  828. be not ignorant

  829. of this one thing,

  830. that one day

  831. is with the Lord

  832. as a thousand years,

  833. and a thousand years

  834. is one day.

  835. He doesn't work

  836. on our timeline.

  837. He's got his own timeline.

  838. It doesn't matter

  839. if it's a day

  840. or a thousand years,

  841. it's all the same

  842. to God.

  843. And then he says,

  844. the Lord is not slack

  845. concerning his promise.

  846. He's not lazy.

  847. He's not a liar.

  848. He's not delayed.

  849. What it is

  850. is that he is long-suffering

  851. to us,

  852. not willing

  853. that any should perish,

  854. but that all should come

  855. to repentance.

  856. God's love

  857. this scene here.

  858. What is this delay about?

  859. We long for the coming

  860. of Christ.

  861. Why does it continue

  862. to delay?

  863. But it's not a delay

  864. because God has determined

  865. he will not return.

  866. He will not institute

  867. this final

  868. and ultimate judgment

  869. until all that belong

  870. to him

  871. come to faith

  872. in Jesus Christ.

  873. He is long-suffering

  874. and loving to us.

  875. And if he were to

  876. come and return today

  877. and institute this judgment today

  878. knowing that a month

  879. from now

  880. someone would have come

  881. to faith in Jesus Christ,

  882. he is unwilling

  883. to come back now.

  884. He is unwilling

  885. for that person

  886. to perish

  887. before they have

  888. trusted Christ.

  889. What love

  890. and patience

  891. and long-suffering

  892. that is for us.

  893. That's the answer

  894. to God's delay.

  895. It's not a delay at all.

  896. It's love.

  897. And then Peter

  898. reminds them again

  899. of the certainty

  900. of Christ coming.

  901. Verse 10,

  902. But the day of the Lord

  903. will come as a thief

  904. in the night

  905. in the which the heavens

  906. shall pass away

  907. with a great noise

  908. and the elements

  909. shall melt

  910. with a fervent heat.

  911. The earth also

  912. and the works

  913. that are therein

  914. shall be burned up.

  915. And then he says

  916. in verse 14,

  917. Wherefore, beloved,

  918. seeing that you look

  919. for such things,

  920. be diligent

  921. that you may be found

  922. in him in peace

  923. without spot

  924. and blameless.

  925. And account that

  926. the long-suffering

  927. of our Lord

  928. is salvation.

  929. Why does God tarry?

  930. Because he loves us.

  931. But there will come a time

  932. when his patience

  933. has run its course.

  934. Now is the time

  935. to repent

  936. and turn to Christ.

  937. So we see

  938. the significance

  939. of the promise.

  940. We see the surety

  941. of the promise

  942. and we're out of time.

  943. But we must see

  944. the substance

  945. of the promise.

  946. Now if you're watching

  947. this video at home

  948. and you're in your living room

  949. wherever you're at,

  950. I know it's gone long

  951. and I know there's

  952. a tendency maybe right now

  953. for you to lose focus.

  954. If you're gonna focus anywhere,

  955. focus here.

  956. What is this promise

  957. that God is actually making?

  958. Please listen to me now.

  959. Look at verse four.

  960. Behold,

  961. his soul

  962. which is lifted up

  963. is not upright in him,

  964. but the just

  965. shall live by his faith.

  966. This verse

  967. contains the key

  968. to God's eternal,

  969. urgent,

  970. and certain promise.

  971. And here's what it is.

  972. God

  973. will judge

  974. all sin,

  975. but salvation

  976. is available

  977. by faith

  978. alone.

  979. This is the promise

  980. of Habakkuk's prophecy.

  981. And it's also

  982. the answer

  983. to his question.

  984. No sin

  985. will go unpunished.

  986. The sin

  987. of the wicked

  988. Chaldeans

  989. will not go

  990. unpunished,

  991. Habakkuk.

  992. The wicked

  993. will not prosper.

  994. The sin

  995. of what would

  996. seem to be

  997. the righteous Israelites

  998. will not go unpunished.

  999. All

  1000. will

  1001. be judged,

  1002. but salvation

  1003. is made available.

1004. But it's not made available

  1005. on our terms.

  1006. It's made available

  1007. on God's terms.

  1008. Habakkuk's first question

  1009. had to do with

  1010. the absence

  1011. of judgment

  1012. on Judah.

  1013. And the second question

  1014. had to do with

  1015. the absence

  1016. of judgment

  1017. on Babylon.

  1018. But God's message

  1019. clearly states

  1020. that every single

  1021. person on earth

  1022. will answer

  1023. for their sin.

  1024. The vision

  1025. given to Habakkuk

  1026. narrows everything

  1027. down into two

  1028. groups of people.

  1029. Those who follow

  1030. after self

  1031. and those

  1032. who follow

  1033. faith.

  1034. Let's first look

  1035. at the one

  1036. who follows self.

  1037. This is where

  1038. verses 5-20

  1039. come into play.

  1040. It provides

  1041. a specific

  1042. description

  1043. of the destruction

  1044. that will come

  1045. to the Chaldeans

  1046. or the Babylonians.

  1047. Now in Habakkuk's

  1048. prophecy

  1049. the Babylonians

  1050. represent

  1051. all people

  1052. who reject

  1053. God

  1054. and follow

  1055. after their

  1056. own self.

  1057. They follow

  1058. after their own

  1059. heart,

  1060. after their own

  1061. way.

  1062. They do what

  1063. they want

  1064. in opposition

  1065. to what God

  1066. has commanded.

  1067. This section

  1068. of verses

  1069. is a literal

  1070. song.

  1071. Scholars refer

  1072. to it

  1073. as a taunt

  1074. song.

  1075. Now a taunt

  1076. song is a

  1077. judgment

  1078. that is

  1079. sung

  1080. by a

  1081. formerly

  1082. oppressed

  1083. people

  1084. towards the

  1085. people that

  1086. oppressed

  1087. them.

  1088. In this

  1089. case,

  1090. God's

  1091. judgment

  1092. on Babylon

  1093. is delivered

  1094. as one of

  1095. these songs.

  1096. There's five

  1097. stanzas to

  1098. the song.

  1099. Each

  1100. stanza

  1101. consists

  1102. of three

  1103. verses

  1104. and each

  1105. stanza

  1106. pronounces

  1107. a

  1108. woe

  1109. against

  1110. Babylon.

  1111. It highlights

  1112. a specific

  1113. category

  1114. of their

  1115. sin

  1116. and then

  1117. it announces

  1118. God's

  1119. judgment

  1120. against

  1121. that

  1122. particular

  1123. sin.

  1124. Now we're

  1125. not going

  1126. to explore

  1127. all of

  1128. this,

  1129. but let

  1130. me just

  1131. mention

  1132. the five

  1133. stanzas

  1134. to you

  1135. for your

  1136. own

  1137. study.

  1138. Verses

  1139. six

  1140. through

  1141. eight

  1142. is the

  1143. first

  1144. stanza

  1145. and the

  1146. sin

  1147. that God

  1148. is judging

  1149. is greed.

  1150. It's a

  1151. reference

  1152. to piling

  1153. up wealth

  1154. through

  1155. extortion

  1156. and insatiable

  1157. appetite

  1158. for more.

  1159. Verses

  1160. nine

  1161. through

  1162. eleven

  1163. is

  1164. injustice,

  1165. covetousness.

  1166. One of the sins

  1167. listed in the

  1168. Ten Commandments

  1169. is what's at the

  1170. heart of this

  1171. particular

  1172. stanza.

  1173. Verses

  1174. twelve

  1175. through fourteen

  1176. is violence.

  1177. They were

  1178. ruthless

  1179. and merciless

  1180. in their

  1181. greedy

  1182. pursuits.

  1183. Verses

  1184. fifteen

  1185. through seventeen

  1186. is immoral

  1187. self-indulgence.

  1188. This element

  1189. of judgment

  1190. involves

  1191. gross

  1192. immorality.

  1193. Verses

  1194. eighteen

  1195. through twenty

  1196. is idolatry.

  1197. This went

  1198. well beyond

  1199. for the

  1200. Babylonians

  1201. the worship

  1202. of idols

  1203. and of

  1204. carved images.

  1205. They were

  1206. the headquarters

  1207. in that

  1208. day of

  1209. spiritism

  1210. and sorcery

  1211. and divination

  1212. and even

  1213. what would

  1214. modernly be

  1215. called

  1216. astrology.

  1217. It was all

  1218. wicked

  1219. and pagan.

  1220. The song

  1221. doesn't include

  1222. an exhaustive

  1223. list of

  1224. sins

  1225. but it's

  1226. a summary

  1227. in verse

  1228. five

  1229. that holds

  1230. us all

  1231. guilty.

  1232. The wicked

  1233. person

  1234. that is

  1235. pictured

  1236. by the

  1237. Babylonians

  1238. is consumed

  1239. with self.

  1240. They follow

  1241. their own

  1242. way

  1243. which only

  1244. leads

  1245. to eternal

  1246. death.

  1247. As Proverbs

  1248. tells us

  1249. Proverbs

  1250. sixteen

  1251. twenty

  1252. five

  1253. there is a

  1254. way that

  1255. seems right

  1256. unto a

  1257. man

  1258. but the

  1259. end thereof

  1260. are the

  1261. ways of

  1262. death.

  1263. The promise

  1264. of God's

  1265. message is

  1266. that all

  1267. sin will

  1268. ultimately be

  1269. judged by

  1270. sin.

  1271. It's an

  1272. eternal

  1273. promise and

  1274. it will

  1275. result in

  1276. a certain

  1277. judgment.

  1278. And we

  1279. must remember

  1280. then Paul's

  1281. writing in

  1282. Romans that

  1283. we are all

  1284. guilty.

  1285. We've all

  1286. sinned.

  1287. We all fall

  1288. underneath the

  1289. scope of

  1290. God's judgment

  1291. from the

  1292. greatest to

  1293. the least

  1294. from the

  1295. oldest to

  1296. the youngest.

  1297. We are all

  1298. guilty.

  1299. So we see

  1300. the one who

  1301. follows self

  1302. but fortunately

  1303. we finish

  1304. with the

  1305. one who

  1306. follows

  1307. faith.

  1308. Look again

  1309. at verse

  1310. four.

  1311. Behold

  1312. his soul

  1313. which is

  1314. lifted up

  1315. is not

  1316. upright in

  1317. him but

  1318. the just

  1319. shall live

  1320. by faith.

  1321. Verse

  1322. four is the

  1323. most important

  1324. verse in the

  1325. entire book

  1326. of Habakkuk.

  1327. It's the

  1328. verse that

  1329. brings hope

  1330. to the

  1331. prophecy.

  1332. Without

  1333. it there

  1334. would be

  1335. no hope

  1336. at all.

  1337. We would

  1338. be utterly

  1339. hopeless as

  1340. a people.

  1341. And so

  1342. significant is

  1343. this part of

  1344. the prophecy

  1345. that it's

  1346. quoted three

  1347. different times

  1348. in the New

  1349. Testament in

  1350. regards to

  1351. salvation.

  1352. Let me give

  1353. you the three

  1354. times.

  1355. First we see

  1356. it in Romans

  1357. chapter one

  1358. and the

  1359. context of

  1360. its use

  1361. there is

  1362. that salvation

  1363. comes by

  1364. faith alone.

  1365. Salvation

  1366. comes by

  1367. faith alone.

  1368. Paul writes

  1369. I am not

  1370. ashamed of

  1371. the gospel

  1372. of Jesus

  1373. Christ for

  1374. it is the

  1375. power of

  1376. God unto

  1377. salvation to

  1378. everyone that

  1379. believes.

  1380. Not to

  1381. everyone who

  1382. does their

  1383. best and

  1384. tries their

  1385. hardest but

  1386. to everyone

  1387. who believes.

  1388. And then he

  1389. says for

  1390. therein is the

  1391. righteousness of

  1392. God revealed

  1393. from faith to

  1394. faith as it

  1395. is written the

  1396. just shall

  1397. live by

  1398. faith.

  1399. Salvation

  1400. comes by

  1401. faith alone.

  1402. And as we

  1403. understand the

  1404. New Testament

  1405. and the

  1406. New Covenant

  1407. that salvation

  1408. that faith

  1409. is specifically

  1410. in the

  1411. finished work

  1412. of Jesus

  1413. Christ on

  1414. the cross

  1415. and in his

  1416. resurrection

  1417. and making

  1418. him our

  1419. Lord.

  1420. Then we see

  1421. it in Galatians

  1422. chapter three.

  1423. The context

  1424. here is that

  1425. works cannot

  1426. save us and

  1427. that Christ

  1428. has paid the

  1429. penalty for

  1430. our sin.

  1431. He has taken

  1432. our death.

  1433. Galatians

  1434. chapter three

  1435. in verse

  1436. ten.

  1437. For all

  1438. who rely

  1439. on works

  1440. of the

  1441. law are

  1442. under a

  1443. curse.

  1444. For it is

  1445. written,

  1446. cursed be

  1447. everyone who

  1448. does not

  1449. abide by

  1450. all the

  1451. things written

  1452. in the

  1453. book of

  1454. the law

  1455. and do

  1456. them.

  1457. Now it

  1458. is evident,

  1459. Paul says,

  1460. that no one

  1461. is justified

  1462. before God

  1463. by the

  1464. law.

  1465. For the

  1466. righteous

  1467. shall live

  1468. by faith.

  1469. But the

  1470. law is not

  1471. of faith.

  1472. Rather,

  1473. the one

  1474. who does

  1475. them shall

  1476. live by

  1477. them.

  1478. Christ

  1479. redeemed

  1480. us,

  1481. Paul says,

  1482. from the

  1483. curse of

  1484. the law

  1485. by becoming

  1486. a curse

  1487. for us.

  1488. For it

  1489. is written,

  1490. cursed is

  1491. everyone who

  1492. is hanged

  1493. on a tree,

  1494. so that in

  1495. Christ Jesus,

  1496. the blessing

  1497. of Abraham

  1498. might come

  1499. to the

  1500. Gentiles,

  1501. so that we

  1502. might receive

  1503. the promised

  1504. spirit through

  1505. faith.

  1506. Christ became

  1507. a curse

  1508. on our

  1509. behalf.

  1510. And he

  1511. says,

  1512. if you

  1513. will just

  1514. trust me,

  1515. that salvation

  1516. that awaits

  1517. in Revelation

  1518. 21 will

  1519. be yours.

  1520. Just believe

  1521. me.

  1522. You can do

  1523. nothing on

  1524. your own.

  1525. Surrender

  1526. all of your

  1527. works and

  1528. trust in

  1529. me.

  1530. Follow

  1531. me.

  1532. Let me be

  1533. your Lord.

  1534. The third

  1535. place is in

  1536. Hebrews 10

  1537. in the

  1538. context here

  1539. is that those

  1540. with true

  1541. faith will

  1542. continue in

  1543. faith and

  1544. in righteousness.

  1545. They will

  1546. not fall

  1547. away.

  1548. Verse 35,

  1549. cast not

  1550. away therefore

  1551. your confidence

  1552. which hath

  1553. great recompense

  1554. of reward for

  1555. ye have need

  1556. of patience

  1557. that after

  1558. you have

  1559. done the

  1560. will of

  1561. God you

  1562. might receive

  1563. the promise.

  1564. And then the

  1565. writer says,

  1566. for yet a

  1567. little while

  1568. and he that

  1569. shall come

  1570. will come

  1571. and will

  1572. not tarry.

  1573. That's a

  1574. quote of

  1575. verse number

  1576. three.

  1577. And then

  1578. comes the

  1579. quote of

  1580. verse four.

  1581. Now the

  1582. just shall

  1583. live by

  1584. faith.

  1585. That is the

  1586. just will

  1587. continue to

  1588. live by

  1589. faith and

  1590. that faith

  1591. will result

  1592. in a

  1593. righteous

  1594. behavior.

  1595. But if

  1596. any man

  1597. draw back,

  1598. the writer

  1599. says,

  1600. my soul

  1601. shall have

  1602. no pleasure

  1603. in him.

  1604. But we

  1605. are not of

  1606. them who

  1607. draw back

  1608. unto

  1609. perdition,

  1610. but of

  1611. them that

  1612. believe to

  1613. the saving

  1614. of the

  1615. soul.

  1616. Just as

  1617. eternal judgment

  1618. will come

  1619. on those

  1620. that continue

  1621. in sin

  1622. by rejecting

  1623. Christ,

  1624. so will

  1625. eternal life

  1626. come to

  1627. all of those

  1628. who live

  1629. by faith

  1630. in Jesus

  1631. Christ.

  1632. The promise

  1633. of salvation

  1634. is absolutely

  1635. certain,

  1636. but it only

  1637. applies to

  1638. those who

  1639. trust in

  1640. Christ alone

  1641. for it.

  1642. As James

  1643. Boyce said,

  1644. the foundation

  1645. of our

  1646. Christian

  1647. life is

  1648. not what

  1649. we can

  1650. do for

  1651. God,

  1652. but what

  1653. God has

  1654. done for

  1655. us.

  1656. Therefore,

  1657. the entrance

  1658. into that

  1659. life is

  1660. not by

  1661. working,

  1662. but by

  1663. receiving.

  1664. Receiving

  1665. what?

  1666. The free

  1667. gift of

  1668. salvation

  1669. that Christ

  1670. offers,

  1671. if you

  1672. will,

  1673. but believe

  1674. in

  1675. him.

  1676. According

  1677. to Habakkuk's

  1678. prophecy,

  1679. if salvation

  1680. comes as a

  1681. result of our

  1682. goodness,

  1683. we would

  1684. all be

  1685. doomed,

  1686. but praise

  1687. be to

  1688. God that

  1689. salvation is

  1690. not of

  1691. works,

  1692. it is of

  1693. faith,

  1694. and it is

  1695. offered freely

  1696. by the

  1697. gracious hand

  1698. of our

  1699. loving and

  1700. merciful God.

  1701. We each

  1702. and everyone

  1703. belong to

  1704. one of these

  1705. two groups.

  1706. We are

  1707. either living

  1708. by faith in

  1709. Christ alone,

  1710. or we're

  1711. not.

  1712. Judgment

  1713. day is

  1714. coming,

  1715. and we

  1716. will all

  1717. give an

  1718. account of

  1719. our lives

  1720. to God,

  1721. and in

  1722. that judgment

  1723. you will

  1724. not be

  1725. declared

  1726. righteous for

  1727. working hard

  1728. and doing

  1729. your best.

  1730. Only those

  1731. who have

  1732. trusted Christ's

  1733. sacrifice for

  1734. sin and

  1735. followed him

  1736. as Lord

  1737. will be

  1738. declared

  1739. righteous.

  1740. And this

  1741. is ultimately

  1742. the message

  1743. of the book

  1744. of Habakkuk.

  1745. The promise

  1746. of judgment

  1747. is urgent,

  1748. and it is

  1749. certain.

  1750. The question

  1751. is,

  1752. to which

  1753. of these

  1754. two groups

  1755. do you

  1756. belong?

  1757. Will you

  1758. be judged,

  1759. or will

  1760. you stand

  1761. justified?

  1762. God.
