  7. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest,

  8. whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely,

  9. whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise,

  10. think on these things.

  11. Those things, which you have both learned and received and heard and seen in me, do,

  12. and the God of peace shall be with you.

  13. This final portion of this section on peace looks at the peace that we can experience with God himself.

  14. In fact, peace with God is foundational to this entire discussion of peace in Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  15. Now, the internal peace that we studied in verses 4 through 7,

  16. and the external peace that we studied in verses 2 and 3,

  17. are actually impossible to achieve without first experiencing the peace of God,

  18. and peace with God, that Paul now speaks of in verses 8 and 9.

  19. There really could be some of us that are here today,

  20. and the greatest issue or the greatest search of our life perhaps right now in this season

  21. is that we would be at peace within,

  22. that we would have this inner peace,

  23. that this turmoil that is unrest in our hearts and in our minds,

  24. and we're searching for that,

  25. and we're looking for ways that we can just be at peace within.

  26. Others of us may be looking for peace with others.

  27. Maybe there's a measure of our life where we're looking to be at peace with our spouse,

  28. or we're looking to be at peace with our neighbor or our coworkers,

  29. and we're searching for peace in our lives.

  30. But the whole discussion of internal peace and external peace

  31. is worthless and vain unless we first are at peace with God.

  32. And it's for this reason that Paul addresses this instruction in verses 8 and 9

  33. to believers and not unbelievers.

  34. Look with me at verse number 8.

  35. Finally, brethren, he designates specifically who it is that he's addressing in this moment.

  36. He's addressing Christians as he's done time and time throughout this book,

  37. but it's just another reminder that what I'm about to tell you

  38. is something that's going to apply specifically to those who are already at peace with God.

  39. And the reason for that is because an unbeliever's attempt

  40. at maintaining the life that is described in verses 8 and 9

  41. is merely moralism.

  42. And it in no way can actually bring you true peace with God.

  43. Those who would attempt, apart from a relationship with God through Jesus,

  44. to live in such a way as to be good enough in order to have peace with God

  45. or to be moral enough to have peace with God,

  46. will never actually achieve it.

  47. It's just moralism.

  48. It's ultimately vanity.

  49. The Bible teaches that apart from a relationship with God through Christ,

  50. a person wouldn't even desire to pursue this morality

  51. or this biblically moral life.

  52. Remember 1 Corinthians 2 and verse 14,

  53. Paul wrote that the natural man, the unbeliever, the unsaved man,

  54. does not accept the things of the Spirit of God,

  55. for they are folly to him.

  56. It's not only that an unbeliever does not pursue a biblically moral life,

  57. but they would believe that morality to the extent

  58. that God has instructed us in the Scriptures is actually foolish.

  59. That to go so far as to say that we would live our lives in this way

  60. and that this is what pleases the Lord,

  61. to them is not only something that they're unwilling to pursue,

  62. but they actually think the pursuit of it is foolish.

  63. It's folly to them, he says.

  64. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God

  65. for their folly to him,

  66. and he is not able to understand them

  67. because they're spiritually discerned.

  68. Because there is this spiritual discernment,

  69. in other words, something that comes directly from the Spirit of God,

  70. it's impossible for an unbeliever to fully comprehend

  71. and understand the need for the morality that the Bible teaches.

  72. So Paul's objective here is not to instruct unbelievers to adopt a moral life.

  73. He's instructing believers to live the way that God has told us in his word to live.

  74. Those who have abandoned their moralism

  75. and have trusted Christ alone for the forgiveness of sin

  76. are given the capacity through the Holy Spirit of God

  77. to actually live in faithful obedience,

  78. to actually understand what faithful obedience even is.

  79. Moral goodness does not bring peace with God,

  80. though peace with God does bring moral goodness.

  81. That is meant to be a demonstration of genuine faith and conversion.

  82. So if my desire today is to be at peace with others

  83. and my desire today is to be at peace within,

  84. and I've come to understand that I can't achieve either one of those things

  85. apart from being at peace with God,

  86. how then is peace with God even made possible?

  87. How can we truly be at peace with God?

  88. Of course, there are certain prerequisites

  89. for understanding this possibility of peace,

  90. not the least of which is acknowledging God's existence

  91. and then recognizing that it is his desire in love

  92. to be at peace with you.

  93. Peace with God is not something that the natural man seeks for.

  94. So this whole possibility and design of peace

  95. is not the idea of man.

  96. It's not the search of man looking for God.

  97. It's the idea of God making it possible because of his love

  98. and his desire to be at peace with us.

  99. Both of these truths are assumed in the creation account of Genesis 1 and 2.

  100. The scriptures teach that God created man and woman in complete goodness.

  101. In fact, at the end of creation,

  102. he looked on what he had created just after creating Adam

  103. and he looked on it and he said,

  104. it is very good.

  105. He created it in complete goodness

  106. and his relationship with them

  107. was characterized by perfect peace

  108. and intimate communion.

  109. Adam and Eve disobeyed the Lord

  110. by eating the fruit of the one tree

  111. that God had said,

  112. don't eat of it.

  113. And we read about that in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  114. Now the issue wasn't the fruit itself.

  115. There was no poison in the fruit.

  116. It wasn't that God instructed them to avoid it

  117. because it in and of itself would be harmful to them.

  118. The fruit of this tree was probably just like the fruit

  119. of every other tree in the garden.

  120. The issue wasn't the fruit.

  121. The issue wasn't that they desired the fruit.

  122. The issue was God said,

  123. don't eat of it

  124. and they disobeyed the word of God.

  125. And that is the very definition of sin.

  126. It's doing those things that go against what God has said.

  127. It's not an issue of fruit.

  128. It's an issue of obedience.

  129. And God had warned them

  130. that disobedience would result in death

  131. and man's relationship to his creator

  132. that at one time was characterized by perfect peace

  133. would then be characterized by hostility and alienation.

  134. And that's exactly what happened with the first sin

  135. and it's exactly what has been perpetuated ever since then

  136. in each and every one of our lives.

  137. We are not by nature the friends of God.

  138. We are by nature the enemies of God.

  139. We are by nature in hostility with God.

  140. We are by nature against him

  141. and alienated from him.

  142. And the tragedy is that there was no way

  143. for Adam and Eve to restore that relationship.

  144. There was nothing that Adam and Eve could do

  145. to all of a sudden restore peace

  146. between them and their creator.

  147. No matter how much they wanted it,

  148. there was nothing they could do to restore that peace.

  149. Their only hope was that God in his grace

  150. might intervene with a work of grace

  151. that only he could perform.

  152. And that's what's so amazing about the gospel message.

  153. It's not that we recognize our wickedness

  154. and we seek out a way to get to God.

  155. It's that God recognizes our wickedness

  156. and he has made a plan

  157. and established it before the foundations of the earth

  158. in order that he might restore peace with us

  159. out of his love.

  160. And then everything we read in the Bible

  161. is ultimately about God's plan

  162. to restore this peace,

  163. this peace between himself and mankind,

  164. his creation.

  165. And in order for that reconciliation to take place,

  166. a sacrifice had to be made

  167. that was sufficient enough

  168. to fully satisfy God's wrath against sin.

  169. And this atonement could only be made sufficiently

  170. by one being,

  171. a perfect being that was not tainted by this disobedience.

  172. And it had to be by God himself.

  173. And so all of scripture speaks of this peace

  174. and all of it culminates

  175. as we get to the new covenant in the gospels

  176. and we learn about this man, Jesus.

  177. And we begin to understand exactly who he was,

  178. that he was the only begotten son of God

  179. and that not only was he the only begotten son of God,

  180. but he's that second person of the Trinity.

  181. He is God himself.

  182. And he became that sacrifice that we desperately needed.

  183. And he proved his divine power over the death

  184. that we were destined for by raising from the dead.

  185. Think back to Philippians chapter two.

  186. In fact, your Bibles are probably open to it already.

  187. Look at verse five.

  188. Let this mind be in you,

  189. which was also in Jesus Christ,

  190. who being in the form of God,

  191. thought it not robbery to be equal with God,

  192. but made himself of no reputation

  193. and took upon him the form of a servant

  194. and was made in the likeness of men.

  195. And being found in fashion as a man,

  196. he humbled himself and became obedient unto death,

  197. even the death of the cross.

  198. Why?

  199. So that God could have peace with man.

  200. And then what has God done?

  201. Verse 10 or verse nine,

  202. wherefore God has highly exalted him

  203. and has given him a name which is above every name.

  204. What name is that?

  205. Lord.

  206. That at the name of Jesus,

  207. every knee should bow of things in heaven

  208. and of things in earth and of things under the earth

  209. and that every tongue should confess

  210. that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  211. That is who Jesus is.

  212. That is Jesus's purpose.

  213. He is God's plan to make a sufficient payment for our sin.

  214. The only way to peace with God

  215. is peace through Jesus Christ.

  216. And his purpose in all of this

  217. was the restoration of peace that we could not provide.

  218. And he offers this eternal peace

  219. to anyone who will trust Christ alone for salvation.

  220. And he turns no true believer away.

  221. That's the magnificence of God's love.

  222. And the awesomeness of God's grace

  223. is that anyone who will come to him

  224. believing in Christ for salvation

  225. will receive that salvation.

  226. He turns no person away.

  227. Jesus himself said in John 6, 37,

  228. all that the father gives me will come to me.

  229. And whoever comes to me,

  230. I will in no wise cast out.

  231. I will never cast away.

  232. No person will ever call upon the name of Jesus

  233. and be rejected.

  234. All who come to him will be accepted in love and in grace.

  235. And that's the prerequisite

  236. to what Paul is instructing in verses 8 and 9.

  237. His attention then is given to those

  238. who are already at peace in salvation.

  239. He's not teaching that salvation comes by works,

  240. that if you achieve all the things in verses 8 and 9,

  241. then the God of peace shall be with you.

  242. That's not what he's teaching at all.

  243. He's addressing those who are already at peace.

  244. And he's instructing them to live lives of holiness.

  245. So clearly, the daily benefit then

  246. of experiencing the peace that comes from God

  247. is affected by the way in which we live.

  248. Our judicial standing before God as believers

  249. is secure for all of eternity.

  250. But our daily fellowship with God

  251. can be hindered by sinful behavior.

  252. The peace of God doesn't exist in a vacuum.

  253. It's felt in all its fullness

  254. as we willfully walk in faith and obedience to Christ.

  255. And Paul's purpose here is to instruct and encourage us

  256. on how to continue with that peace.

  257. You say, I'm a Christian.

  258. I know that I've been made at peace with God

  259. through salvation, but I still have this peace,

  260. this lack of inner peace within.

  261. And I still have this lack of peace with others.

  262. And it feels like my life has just contention

  263. and conflict all around.

  264. Could it be that you have not chosen as a believer

  265. to live faithfully to the description of verses 8 and 9?

  266. But rather, even beyond your conversion,

  267. I've chosen to live a life of sinfulness

  268. and a mindset that is not indicative of one

  269. that is pleasing to Christ.

  270. Well, Paul gives us this instruction and encouragement.

  271. And he says, first of all, in verse 8,

  272. that it is a matter of thought.

  273. It's a matter of thought.

  274. Look with me at verse 8.

  275. Finally, brethren, and he goes through this list.

  276. Look at the last phrase.

  277. Think on these things.

  278. There's no less than five different Greek words

  279. used in the New Testament

  280. that are translated in English as think.

  281. The word that Paul uses right here in verse number 8

  282. is actually a mathematical term.

  283. It's logizmi is what it's called.

  284. And it's the same word that we get our English word logarithm.

  285. It means to calculate or to reckon objective facts

  286. in order that we might draw specific conclusions.

  287. In other words, Paul is instructing these believers

  288. to meditate on these truths,

  289. to meditate on these things

  290. in the same way that a mathematician

  291. meditates on an equation

  292. and contemplates an equation.

  293. It's not a passing thought

  294. that kind of rolls around in his head

  295. and then he moves on.

  296. No, it's intense.

  297. It is intentional.

  298. And he focuses in on the problem that's at hand

  299. and he draws specific conclusions

  300. that are based on objective facts,

  301. in his case as a mathematician, numbers.

  302. Paul is saying that believers

  303. are to look at the description in verse 8,

  304. see them as objective facts

  305. that come from the truth of God

  306. and they are to meditate on those things.

  307. And of course, the truth is

  308. that you are what you think.

  309. You are what you think.

  310. The Bible tells us that.

  311. Proverbs chapter 23 and verse 7,

    Proverbs 23 chapter mention

  312. for as he thinketh in his heart,

  313. so is he, Solomon wrote.

  314. Jesus said in Mark chapter 7,

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  315. what comes out of a person

  316. is what defiles him.

  317. For from within, out of the heart of man

  318. come evil thoughts,

  319. sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,

  320. coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality,

  321. envy, slander, pride, foolishness.

  322. All these evil things, Jesus said,

  323. come from within

  324. and they defile a person.

  325. What you are is what you think

  326. and what you think

  327. is influenced by your meditation.

  328. The things that you give your attention to

  329. and your affection to,

  330. these are the things that influence your mind

  331. and they shape your heart.

  332. In other words,

  333. what we allow to be the meditation

  334. of our minds will shape our hearts

  335. and eventually be reflected in our behavior.

  336. And the believer's meditation,

  337. according to Paul in verse 8,

  338. is to be on the things that are acceptable to God,

  339. the good things,

  340. the true things,

  341. as he goes through the list.

  342. And we're reminded of David in Psalm 19

  343. as he wrote,

  344. let the words of my mouth

  345. and the meditation of my heart

  346. be acceptable in your sight.

  347. Oh Lord,

  348. my rock and my redeemer.

  349. Psalm 119.97,

  350. the psalmist says there,

  351. oh how I love your law.

  352. It is my meditation

  353. all the day.

  354. So let's look at what Paul wrote

  355. was to be the focus of our thoughts.

  356. He gives us six individual words

  357. and then he gives two summary statements.

  358. Look with me at verse number eight.

  359. Finally, brethren,

  360. whatsoever things are true

  361. is the first thing

  362. that is to bring the focus of our thought.

  363. Truth is something

  364. that many people no longer believe in.

  365. But it's significant

  366. that Paul begins his list with it

  367. because every other item in this list

  368. flows out of truth.

  369. Everything else comes out

  370. of this first dynamic of truth.

  371. If you don't have the focus of truth,

  372. it's not even possible

  373. for you to have the focus

  374. of the other things.

  375. Focus on truth,

  376. Paul says.

  377. Well, what is truth?

  378. Some would say that it's relative,

  379. that it depends on who you are

  380. and the circumstances

  381. in which you find yourself

  382. is what determines truth.

  383. Others would say

  384. truth doesn't actually exist at all,

  385. at least in any absolute sense.

  386. But Christianity understands

  387. and believes truth

  388. to be that which comes

  389. from the perfect character of God,

  390. namely,

  391. his word.

  392. So Paul's instruction here

  393. is an instruction

  394. to meditate

  395. on the Bible.

  396. As again,

  397. the psalmist wrote

  398. in Psalm 119.11,

  399. thy word have I hid in my heart

  400. that I might not what?

  401. Sin against thee.

  402. The pathway to holiness,

  403. the pathway to experiencing

  404. the peace that comes from God

  405. is the pathway of the word of God.

  406. It is to focus on the truth of God.

  407. What is truth?

  408. Truth is God.

  409. Truth is the Bible.

  410. Truth is Jesus.

  411. Truth is the gospel.

  412. Think on these things.

  413. Meditate on them,

  414. Paul says.

  415. Jesus said in John 17

  416. in his high priestly prayer,

  417. sanctify them in truth.

  418. Your word is truth,

  419. he prayed to the Father.

  420. In Psalm 19,

  421. we read,

  422. the law of the Lord

  423. is perfect,

  424. restoring the soul.

  425. The testimony of the Lord

  426. is sure,

  427. making wise the simple.

  428. The precepts of the Lord

  429. are right,

  430. rejoicing the heart.

  431. The commandment of the Lord

  432. is pure,

  433. enlightening the eyes.

  434. The fear of the Lord

  435. is clean,

  436. enduring forever.

  437. The judgments of the Lord

  438. are true.

  439. They are righteous

  440. all together.

  441. And in Titus chapter one,

  442. Paul wrote to Titus,

  443. a faithful pastor,

  444. in the hope of eternal life,

  445. which God,

  446. who cannot lie,

  447. promised long ago

  448. at the proper time

  449. manifesting even his word

  450. and the proclamation

  451. with which I was entrusted

  452. according to the commandment

  453. of God.

  454. What is truth?

  455. God's word is truth.

  456. The gospel is truth.

  457. Let that be your meditation.

  458. And if you will meditate

  459. on that which is true,

  460. the rest of this list

  461. will naturally fall into place

  462. exactly where it needs to be.

  463. Focus on the truth.

  464. Think on these things,

  465. Paul says.

  466. Then he says,

  467. secondly,

  468. whatsoever things are honest.

  469. The intention of this word

  470. is to communicate

  471. that which is venerable

  472. or honorable.

  473. We're to set our minds

  474. on things that are dignified

  475. and respectable.

  476. There's a certain dignity

  477. and respectability

  478. that is to come along

  479. and be indicated

  480. in the life of a believer.

  481. Because they have set

  482. their focus on the truth,

  483. there is a certain dignity

  484. with which they live their lives.

  485. It's the outflow

  486. of our meditation on truth.

  487. Paul says,

  488. think on these things.

  489. Think on the things

  490. that are honorable.

  491. Thirdly, he says,

  492. whatsoever is just.

  493. This is what is righteous.

  494. Equity.

  495. It means doing the right thing.

  496. And it brings into view

  497. a pursuit of godly wisdom.

  498. And in his grace,

  499. God has given us

  500. entire books of the Bible

  501. dedicated to making us wise.

  502. Proverbs.

  503. Proverbs.

  504. Ecclesiastes.

  505. Job.

  506. The full intention

  507. of those books

  508. is God's way of saying,

  509. this is how to think wisely.

  510. This is how to live

  511. in godly wisdom.

  512. Think on these things,

  513. Paul says.

  514. My dad had a practice

  515. when I was growing up

  516. and still does it to this day

  517. that I've tried to adopt

  518. even as my own personal practice

  519. of reading a chapter

  520. in Proverbs every day.

  521. Every morning,

  522. it's the first part

  523. of my devotions

  524. is to read a chapter

  525. in Proverbs.

  526. Why?

  527. Because it's full

  528. of God's wisdom

  529. and I want to live

  530. in wisdom.

  531. James says we're to pray

  532. for wisdom

  533. and that any that lacks it,

  534. if you pray,

  535. that God will give it

  536. generously to him

  537. and will not abrade him

  538. but will generously

  539. give that wisdom.

  540. Well, God has already

  541. provided the truth

  542. of wisdom in the Bible.

  543. Read the book

  544. of Proverbs.

  545. Read Ecclesiastes

  546. about the vanity

  547. of life

  548. and how to enjoy

  549. and obey the Lord

  550. in the midst

  551. of the chaos

  552. that is life.

  553. Read the book

  554. of Job

  555. and learn about

  556. the goodness

  557. of God

  558. even in the midst

  559. of intense suffering.

  560. Learn to be wise

  561. because it's an overflow

  562. of the truth of God.

  563. Then he says,

  564. whatsoever things

  565. are pure.

  566. This refers to that

  567. which is chaste

  568. and modest

  569. and innocent.

  570. it's the antithesis

  571. of the sensuality

  572. that is pervasive

  573. in our culture.

  574. Then he says,

  575. whatsoever things

  576. are lovely.

  577. These are things

  578. that are acceptable

  579. and pleasing

  580. both morally

  581. and aesthetically.

  582. I think God's intention

  583. is that we set

  584. our minds

  585. on beauty.

  586. One of the ways

  587. that we bear

  588. the image of God

  589. is in beauty,

  590. recognizing the beauty

  591. of creation,

  592. mimicking that beauty

  593. in the way

  594. that we carry ourselves,

  595. in the way

  596. that we approach

  597. our work,

  598. doing things,

  599. setting our minds

  600. on things

  601. that are lovely,

  602. acceptable,

  603. pleasing.

  604. And then the sixth one

  605. he says,

  606. is whatsoever things

  607. are of a good report.

  608. That which is reputable,

  609. spoken well of.

  610. It's the opposite

  611. of conniving

  612. and questionable ethics.

  613. And then we immediately

  614. figure out

  615. that Paul could have

  616. gone on and on and on.

  617. He could have written

  618. an entire book

  619. just listing all the things

  620. that we're to think on.

  621. So he helps us

  622. by giving us

  623. two summary statements

  624. at the end.

  625. What does he say?

  626. If there be any virtue

  627. and if there be any praise,

  628. if there's any moral excellence,

  629. and if there's anything

  630. that's worthy

  631. of commendation,

  632. think on these things.

  633. What does that have to do

  634. with being at peace

  635. with God?

  636. To meditate

  637. on these things

  638. is to exemplify

  639. those qualities

  640. in the way

  641. that we live.

  642. And this holy life

  643. brings the peace

  644. of pure,

  645. intimate communion

  646. with God.

  647. If my meditation

  648. has been taken off

  649. of the sinful distractions

  650. of the world,

  651. and it has been primarily

  652. placed on the truth

  653. of God's word,

  654. the natural result

  655. and overflow

  656. of that

  657. is an intimacy

  658. with God

  659. like you will never

  660. experience in anything else.

  661. And what does intimacy

  662. with communion

  663. with God bring?

  664. Peace despite circumstance.

  665. Peace despite conflict.

  666. Peace in every area

  667. of life,

  668. both inward peace

  669. and external peace.

  670. If sinful thinking

  671. and behavior

  672. is what separated

  673. man from God

  674. in the beginning,

  675. we can't expect

  676. that God would be pleased

  677. to supply us

  678. with his blessed peace

  679. if we follow

  680. after sin

  681. after we're converted.

  682. At some point

  683. along the way,

  684. there is this

  685. antinomianism

  686. that has

  687. pervaded

  688. Christian churches

  689. that says

  690. that once I settle

  691. things as far

  692. as my faith

  693. is concerned,

  694. then I'm

  695. at liberty

  696. to live

  697. however it is

  698. that I want to live.

  699. And they expect

  700. to have God's blessing

  701. on their life

  702. despite living

  703. a life

  704. that is completely

  705. antithetical

  706. to what God

  707. has said

  708. to live

  709. in his word.

  710. And you may be here today

  711. and you've got

  712. this inner conflict.

  713. Maybe you constantly

  714. are doubting

  715. your salvation

  716. and you can't

  717. figure out

  718. why you have

  719. these feelings

  720. of doubt

  721. in your life

  722. and you trace back

  723. well what is it

  724. that I believe

  725. and you believe

  726. all the things

  727. about the gospel.

  728. Maybe the problem

  729. is not your belief.

  730. Maybe the problem

  731. is that your life

  732. has been spent

  733. focused

  734. and meditating

  735. on the things

  736. of this world.

  737. How could you

  738. possibly expect

  739. to sense

  740. the security

  741. and assurance

  742. of your salvation

  743. when your life

  744. is lived

  745. as an enemy

  746. of God?

  747. How could you

  748. possibly expect

  749. to have inner peace

  750. when your life

  751. and the way

  752. that you live

  753. is not indicative

  754. of anything

  755. that God

  756. has told you

  757. to do

  758. and what he

  759. has told you

  760. to be?

  761. Paul emphasized

  762. the positive here

  763. but it is helpful

  764. for us to consider

  765. the negative

  766. the inverse.

  767. Consider reading

  768. it like this

  769. whatsoever

  770. is false

  771. dishonorable

  772. unrighteous

  773. impure

  774. unlovely

  775. without excellence

  776. and unworthy

  777. of praise

  778. do not think

  779. on these things.

  780. You said

  781. Paul's command

  782. calls for a life

  783. of conscious negation

  784. thinking as we

  785. ought to

  786. demands

  787. the discipline

  788. of refusal.

  789. It's impossible

  790. to think purely

  791. when your meditation

  792. is filled

  793. with suggestive material

  794. and pornographic

  795. images.

  796. It's impossible

  797. to think honorably

  798. when our

  799. playlists

  800. are replete

  801. with music

  802. that exalts

  803. drunkenness

  804. and sensuality

  805. and rebellion.

  806. it's impossible

  807. to think

  808. on truth

  809. when our

  810. meditation

  811. is set

  812. on the

  813. perspectives

  814. and strategies

  815. of the ungodly.

  816. The peace

  817. of God

  818. comes through

  819. holiness

  820. and holiness

  821. is first

  822. a matter

  823. of the mind

  824. and the way

  825. that we think.

  826. You say

  827. what do I do?

  828. Whatever you

  829. have to do.

  830. Whatever you

  831. have to do.

  832. Jesus said

  833. in Matthew 5

  834. if thy right

  835. eye offend

  836. thee

  837. pluck it out.

  838. If your right

  839. hand offend

  840. thee

  841. cut it off.

  842. He's speaking

  843. in hyperbole

  844. to reference

  845. the severity

  846. of sinful

  847. behavior.

  848. What must

  849. you do

  850. to set

  851. your meditation

  852. right?

  853. Maybe it means

  854. getting rid

  855. of the TV

  856. for a little

  857. while.

  858. Maybe it means

  859. using the

  860. smart phones

  861. to give us

  862. that indication

  863. that once

  864. we've spent

  865. half an hour

  866. on social media

  867. for the day

  868. we're done.

  869. Do whatever

  870. you have to do

  871. to set your

  872. meditation

  873. on what is right

  874. and to refuse

  875. the things

  876. that will lead

  877. to sin

  878. and complacency.

  879. Cut out

  880. the things

  881. that shape

  882. your heart

  883. and sin

  884. and embrace

  885. wholly

  886. the Bible

  887. prayer

  888. relationships

  889. and media

  890. that shapes

  891. your heart

  892. in righteousness.

  893. So Paul says

  894. it's first

  895. a matter of

  896. thought.

  897. Much more

  898. quickly than that

  899. he says

  900. it's a matter

  901. of practice.

  902. It's a matter

  903. of practice.

  904. Look at verse

  905. nine.

  906. Those things

  907. what things?

  908. The things

  909. in verse

  910. eight that he

  911. just said.

  912. Those things

  913. do

  914. do them

  915. he says.

  916. The descriptions

  917. in verse

  918. eight are not

  919. meant to be

  920. abstract ideas

  921. to consider

  922. but characteristics

  923. to be practiced

  924. in daily living.

  925. Thinking right

  926. is useless

  927. if it isn't

  928. worked out

  929. into practical

  930. behavior.

  931. Not only are we

  932. to refuse

  933. wicked things

  934. but we're

  935. to practice

  936. the good things.

  937. this word

  938. do

  939. is that

  940. very word.

  941. It's the

  942. word for

  943. repetition.

  944. The word

  945. for practice

  946. like an

  947. athlete

  948. who works

  949. hard at

  950. his craft

  951. repetitiously

  952. taking the

  953. shots

  954. repetitiously

  955. doing whatever

  956. he has to do

  957. in order

  958. to be the

  959. best that he

  960. can be

  961. at his

  962. position.

  963. We're to

  964. repetitiously

  965. incorporate

  966. holy living

  967. into our

  968. daily lives

  969. in a pursuit

  970. of being

  971. conformed

  972. to the

  973. image of

  974. Christ.

  975. He says

  976. all these

  977. things in

  978. verse number

  979. eight

  980. practice

  981. them

  982. repetitiously

  983. in your

  984. life

  985. practice

  986. them

  987. yeah

  988. you're

  989. going to

  990. fail

  991. and you're

  992. going to

  993. fall

  994. and there's

  995. going to be

  996. some times

  997. that you

  998. fumble

  999. through

  1000. the keys

  1001. but just

  1002. keep

  1003. practicing

  1004. and just

  1005. keep

  1006. practicing

  1007. and even

  1008. when you

  1009. fall

  1010. just get

  1011. right back

  1012. up

  1013. and keep

  1014. doing it

  1015. again

  1016. and keep

  1017. doing it

  1018. again

  1019. and what

  1020. you'll

  1021. find

  1022. is that

  1023. God

  1024. in his

  1025. power

  1026. and through

  1027. the Holy

  1028. Spirit

  1029. begins to

  1030. shape our

  1031. hearts in

  1032. that way

  1033. as we

  1034. focus on

  1035. those things

  1036. so that we

  1037. can live

  1038. lives of

  1039. true holiness

  1040. and true

  1041. righteousness

  1042. that's pleasing

  1043. to him

  1044. and that

  1045. brings his

  1046. peace and

  1047. communion

  1048. and then he

  1049. says right

  1050. in the middle

  1051. of this

  1052. those things

  1053. which you

  1054. have both

  1055. learned

  1056. and received

  1057. and heard

  1058. and seen

  1059. in me

  1060. do

  1061. he basically

  1062. leaves these

  1063. believers without

  1064. an excuse

  1065. they couldn't

  1066. plead ignorance

  1067. in this

  1068. well we just

  1069. didn't know

  1070. what we were

  1071. supposed to

  1072. do

  1073. we didn't

  1074. know we

  1075. were supposed

  1076. to live

  1077. that way

  1078. we didn't

  1079. know we

  1080. were supposed

  1081. to do

  1082. those things

  1083. they couldn't

  1084. possibly plead

  1085. ignorance

  1086. learned and

  1087. received our

  1088. references to

  1089. instruction

  1090. heard and

  1091. seen our

  1092. references to

  1093. example

  1094. in other words

  1095. the Philippians

  1096. had everything

  1097. that they needed

  1098. in the word

  1099. of God

  1100. and in the

  1101. spiritual leaders

  1102. that God

  1103. had given

  1104. them

  1105. and so

  1106. do we

  1107. Christian you

  1108. cannot plead

  1109. ignorance in

  1110. this

  1111. we are more

  1112. blessed

  1113. than any

  1114. Christian

  1115. in the history

  1116. of the world

  1117. to be able to

  1118. have such

  1119. great access

  1120. to the word

  1121. of God

  1122. and not only

  1123. the word

  1124. but good

  1125. translations

  1126. that help us

  1127. and in various

  1128. languages that help

  1129. us understand it

  1130. and we have

  1131. access to great

  1132. writers and

  1133. theologians

  1134. through history

  1135. that God has

  1136. blessed us with

  1137. their minds

  1138. and helping us

  1139. to understand

  1140. the word of God

  1141. he's blessed us

  1142. with spiritual

  1143. leaders historically

  1144. spiritual leaders

  1145. presently that

  1146. serve as wonderful

  1147. examples there is

  1148. no way that you

  1149. can plead ignorance

  1150. in this if you

  1151. are living a life

  1152. of disobedience

  1153. it's only because

  1154. you have chosen

  1155. to it's not because

  1156. you don't know

  1157. what to do

  1158. so think on

  1159. these things

  1160. and the things

  1161. that you've been

  1162. instructed in

  1163. and the examples

  1164. that have been

  1165. given to you

  1166. follow them

  1167. then he says

  1168. finally and

  1169. most encouragingly

  1170. it's a matter

  1171. of promise

  1172. it's a matter

  1173. of thought

  1174. it's a matter

  1175. of practice

  1176. and it's a matter

  1177. of promise

  1178. look at the

  1179. last phrase

  1180. in verse 9

  1181. and the God

  1182. of peace

  1183. shall be with you

  1184. and the God

  1185. of peace

  1186. shall be with you

  1187. now I want you

  1188. to look at

  1189. verse 7

  1190. remember the promise

  1191. that we studied

  1192. last week

  1193. that the peace

  1194. of God

  1195. shall keep

  1196. your hearts

  1197. and minds

  1198. through Jesus

  1199. Christ

  1200. in that

  1201. we're promised

  1202. the peace

  1203. that comes

  1204. from God

  1205. we're promised

  1206. something

  1207. that God

  1208. gives to us

  1209. in verse 9

  1210. we're not promised

  1211. the peace

  1212. of God

  1213. we're promised

  1214. the God

  1215. of peace

  1216. you see the difference

  1217. on one hand

  1218. we're promised

  1219. the blessings

  1220. that only can come

  1221. from God's hand

  1222. on the other hand

  1223. we are promised

  1224. God himself

  1225. intimate communion

  1226. intimate fellowship

  1227. intimate relationship

  1228. with our creator

  1229. Paul didn't mean

  1230. this to be

  1231. a conditional promise

  1232. that was contingent

  1233. on our ability

  1234. to earn God's presence

  1235. that's not what

  1236. he's saying

  1237. he's not saying

  1238. that if you think

  1239. on these things

  1240. if you practice

  1241. these things

  1242. the God of peace

  1243. will be with you

  1244. that's not what

  1245. he's saying

  1246. he's saying

  1247. that as

  1248. you think

  1249. on these things

  1250. and as

  1251. you practice

  1252. these things

  1253. God will

  1254. be with you

  1255. why

  1256. because you

  1257. belong to him

  1258. the awesomeness

  1259. of this promise

  1260. is that it stands

  1261. even when we

  1262. fail

  1263. the greatness

  1264. of God's grace

  1265. and salvation

  1266. is that we

  1267. couldn't restore

  1268. that peace

  1269. only Jesus

  1270. could restore

  1271. that peace

  1272. God views you

  1273. not on the basis

  1274. of who you are

  1275. and what you've

  1276. done

  1277. he views you

  1278. as a believer

  1279. on the basis

  1280. of what Christ

  1281. has done

  1282. for you

  1283. therefore

  1284. even when you

  1285. fall beyond

  1286. your conversion

  1287. he does not

  1288. take away

  1289. his presence

  1290. from you

  1291. that is yours

  1292. forever

  1293. and ever

  1294. for all of

  1295. eternity

  1296. so revel

  1297. in the promise

  1298. of God

  1299. that he is

  1300. with you

  1301. and think

  1302. on these things

  1303. to live a life

  1304. that is pleasing

  1305. to him

  1306. so that you

  1307. can possibly

  1308. experience the

  1309. blessings

  1310. that come

  1311. from his

  1312. hand

  1313. the natural

  1314. consequences

  1315. of righteousness

  1316. rather than

  1317. the natural

  1318. consequences

  1319. of sin

  1320. what a wonderful

  1321. truth

  1322. that his presence

  1323. is on the basis

  1324. of what Christ

  1325. has done

  1326. not what we

  1327. have done

  1328. all who receive

  1329. this reconciliation

  1330. through Christ

  1331. will enjoy

  1332. peace

  1333. peace with

  1334. God

  1335. forever

  1336. and I want

  1337. to close

  1338. this morning

  1339. by referencing

  1340. Spurgeon

  1341. once again

  1342. the 1800s

  1343. when he was

  1344. preaching on

  1345. Philippians chapter

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  1346. 4

  1347. the third

  1348. point of his

  1349. message

  1350. was focused

  1351. in on this

  1352. phrase in

  1353. verse 9

  1354. the God

  1355. of peace

  1356. and the

  1357. heading of

  1358. this third

  1359. point was

  1360. the triune

  1361. God

  1362. its author

  1363. the triune

  1364. God

  1365. its author

  1366. and he took

  1367. time to

  1368. expose

  1369. each role

  1370. that the

  1371. person of

  1372. the Trinity

  1373. has

  1374. in salvation

  1375. and providing

  1376. true peace

  1377. with God

  1378. first he said

  1379. God the

  1380. Father

  1381. is the

  1382. planner

  1383. he's the

  1384. giver of

  2033. is

  2034. good

  2035. and

  2036. God

  2037. the

  2038. son

  2039. becomes

  2040. the

  2041. procurer

  2042. of

  2043. our

  2044. peace

  2045. with

  2046. God

  2047. and

  2048. then

  2049. we

  2050. hear

  2051. those

  2052. great

  2053. words

  2054. that

  2055. we

  2056. long

  2057. to

  2058. hear

  2059. as

  2060. believers

  2061. well

  2062. done

  2063. my

  2064. good

  2065. and

  2066. faithful

  2067. servant

  2068. enter

  2069. thou

  2070. into

  2071. the

  2072. joy

  2073. of

  2074. the

  2075. Lord

  2076. not

  2077. because

  2078. you're

  2079. actually

  2080. good

  2081. but

  2082. because

  2083. Christ

  2084. is

  2085. good

  2086. on

  2087. your

  2088. behalf

  2089. all

  2090. those

  2091. who

  2092. come

  2093. to

  2094. him

  2095. in

  2096. faith

  2097. I

  2098. will

  2099. never

  2100. cast

  2101. out

  2102. so

  2103. there's

  2104. God

  2105. the

  2106. father

  2107. who's

  2108. the

  2109. planner

  2110. the

  2111. giver

  2112. of

  2113. the

  2114. son

  2115. he

  2116. set

  2117. this

  2118. all

  2119. in

  2120. motion

  2121. then

  2122. there's

  2123. God

  2124. the

  2125. son

  2126. the

  2127. procurer

  2128. he's

  2129. the

  2130. covenant

  2131. fulfiller

  2132. the

  2133. covenant

  2134. sustainer

  2135. and

  2136. then

  2137. thirdly

  2138. there's

  2139. God

  2140. the

  2141. spirit

  2142. he's

  2143. the

  2144. executor

  2145. in

  2264. enough

  2265. he's

  2266. God

  2267. the

  2269. who's

  2270. the
