  7. Philippians chapter 4, let's read beginning at verse 15.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  8. Now ye Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel when I departed from Macedonia,

  9. no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but you only.

  10. For even in Thessalonica you sent once and again unto my necessity,

  11. not because I desire a gift, but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.

  12. But I have all and abound.

  13. I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you,

  14. an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well-pleasing to God.

  15. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

  16. Now unto God our Father be glory forever and ever.

  17. Amen.

  18. Amen.

  19. Let's just say another quick prayer and ask for the Lord's help as we come to the word today.

  20. Lord, we do ask once again that you would help us now as we focus in on this passage.

  21. Lord, that you would give us eyes to see and ears to hear.

  22. As Jeremiah prayed that you would take our hearts of stone and you would give us a heart of flesh

  23. that can respond to your word.

  24. That you would do that work in us today.

  25. That you would speak, Lord, through your word.

  26. Help us now in Jesus' name.

  27. Amen.

  28. Well, Paul's letter to Philippi, as we've studied over and over,

  29. was a response to the generosity of the congregation.

  30. They had sent Epaphroditus, as we see once again in verse 18,

  31. and we refer back to chapter 2 as well on this.

  32. They had sent Epaphroditus as their messenger.

  33. He was to check on Paul to see how he was doing as he was in his fourth year of imprisonment in Rome,

  34. or at least in Roman imprisonment.

  35. And he was also taking a gift, a collection, material collection that the church had taken up

  36. in order to help Paul and help him meet his even basic needs as he was there in prison under house arrest in Rome.

  37. So what we see now in this section, really the second half of Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  38. is really Paul's thank you note to the church.

  39. Thanking them for this gift and expressing how grateful he was to the Lord for them and for their concern.

  40. The first paragraph in this section, which is verses 10 through 14,

  41. we studied it last week, reveals the example of Paul's personal contentment

  42. and how challenging of a passage that is for us as we come to understand how discontent we often can be.

  43. Yet in the most difficult of circumstances, Paul wrote that he had learned the secret of contentment,

  44. that contentment ultimately is found in Jesus,

  45. that the strength and the encouragement that he finds actually comes from the hand of God.

  46. And it's the ordinary means of churches like the Philippian congregation

  47. that the Lord was using to encourage Paul as he was there.

  48. But he wanted them to know that he had learned contentment and he was encouraging them in that.

  49. As we get to this second paragraph here,

  50. we see that the attention is turned now to the church itself.

  51. And the focus of our study today becomes the congregation's example rather than Paul's example.

  52. And it's their example of giving and generosity.

  53. Indeed, the churches of Macedonia, which were really led by the congregation in Philippi,

  54. are noted all throughout the New Testament for their giving spirit

  55. and their sacrificial offerings that they took repetitively in order to encourage the work of God.

  56. And we typically view our instruction in these New Testament letters

  57. as coming from the apostles that the Lord used to write them.

  58. But here in this part of the passage,

  59. the instruction that we gain doesn't actually come from Paul.

  60. It comes as we acknowledge the example of the church itself,

  61. as he commends them,

  62. and as he thanks them for what they had done,

  63. we actually learn from them.

  64. In fact, as we study the New Testament,

  65. often the Philippian church was the only church that was actually committed

  66. to faithfully giving to the work of Paul.

  67. There were even times in the Corinthian letters

  68. that Paul had to prod the more wealthy Corinthian church

  69. and Corinthian congregation

  70. to actually fulfill a commitment that they had made a year before

  71. to actually help other churches that were in need.

  72. And he was having to prod them

  73. and encourage them to fulfill that commitment.

  74. He never had to do that with Philippi.

  75. They led in the way in this.

  76. And here we find a great example of their giving.

  77. And we can't help but think about,

  78. as we come to the issue of giving and generosity in the Scriptures,

  79. that there are many believers, many Christians,

  80. that do not faithfully give.

  81. And why is that, I ask myself this week?

  82. Why is it such a struggle for us sometimes

  83. to be generous in our giving,

  84. to be faithful in our giving to the Lord

  85. and our giving to the ministry?

  86. And I think there's a lot of reasons for that,

  87. but I've kind of grouped them into three basic explanations,

  88. really three categories as to why we often struggle with giving.

  89. The first category is this,

  90. is really just an inward focus, an inward focus.

  91. Selfishness is endemic to human nature,

  92. as we studied last week.

  93. Contentment is a foreign concept in our society.

  94. And many Christians don't give

  95. because they're more concerned about pleasing themselves.

  96. Their inward focus prevents them from seeing the need to give,

  97. and it leads them to even rationalize

  98. why they can't or shouldn't give.

  99. It's not a matter of, will I obey the Lord?

  100. It's a rationalization on,

  101. I have all of these other things in my life I'm trying to do,

  102. and surely God wants me to be happy,

  103. and so he would rather me fulfill my happiness through these things

  104. than he would me sacrifice those things in order to give.

  105. And so there's an inward focus in a lot of people's hearts

  106. that actually prevents them from faithfully giving to the Lord.

  107. I think a second category for this,

  108. at least among believers,

  109. is that worship and ministry aren't always the priority.

  110. Worship and ministry aren't always the priority.

  111. For some, it's not always a lack of giving

  112. as much as it is a disregard for giving to God.

  113. This type of person may be very generous

  114. to their friends and their family.

  115. They may be captivated even by a local charity

  116. that just is involved in something

  117. that they're passionate about,

  118. and they see that they want to partner in this passion

  119. to help this specific need in their community,

  120. but they never sense that same kind of passion

  121. in the work of God.

  122. And so worship and the giving of worship on a Sunday morning

  123. or giving of regular worship to the church

  124. is not so much a priority of theirs.

  125. The passion for the ministry of the gospel

  126. isn't so much of a passion for them

  127. as many other things that they have going on in their life.

  128. So sometimes it's just an inward focus.

  129. Sometimes it's not so much an inward focus

  130. as much as it is worship and ministry

  131. just aren't a priority.

  132. And then the third category, I think,

  133. is where most Christians who are not faithful to give

  134. fall into is the category of fear.

  135. They're just afraid to give.

  136. It's not that they don't want to,

  137. and it's not that they haven't prioritized ministry

  138. and worship.

  139. They could be faithful in every other area of their life.

  140. But they're afraid that if they give,

  141. they'll lack what they need

  142. to meet their basic needs in life.

  143. And we all understand that fear.

  144. We all have dealt with that fear before.

  145. The problem is, is that kind of fear

  146. leads us to disobedience,

  147. and that's the issue with it.

  148. It essentially says,

  149. I will be better to me than God will be to me.

  150. I will take better care of myself

  151. than what I trust and believe

  152. that God will take care of me in.

  153. Well, the example of the Philippians

  154. in verses 15 through 20

  155. covers all three of those explanations,

  156. or all three of those categories.

  157. It is interesting how the topic of giving

  158. will arouse all kinds of theological interest

  159. in the hearts of people

  160. that otherwise couldn't care less

  161. about digging too deep

  162. into the doctrinal things of the Bible, right?

  163. If you bring up a message

  164. or bring up the issue of faithfully giving,

  165. all of a sudden,

  166. they want to get very, very technical.

  167. And they want to hear,

  168. well, what is it exactly

  169. that God wants me to give?

  170. Like, tell me exactly the amount

  171. that God desires for me to give.

  172. They want to get very technical in that.

  173. Or perhaps they'll ask the question,

  174. does God desire that I tithe

  175. on the gross income

  176. or on the net income?

  177. And we've all asked that question,

  178. haven't we?

  179. I don't know how many times

  180. I've asked that question,

  181. and especially as a college student,

  182. when you're just broke all the time

  183. and you really don't want

  184. to eat college food this week,

  185. you want to go to Bojangles instead

  186. or Chick-fil-A,

  187. and you're just thinking,

  188. maybe I can adjust some things here.

  189. What is it exactly

  190. that God wants me to give?

  191. Rarely a simple answer

  192. satisfies those questions.

  193. We want to dissect those scriptures

  194. just to make sure

  195. that we're really,

  196. somebody's really being honest

  197. with us in this

  198. because it would be a shame

  199. for us to be bad stewards

  200. and actually give too much

  201. to the Lord.

  202. We don't want to do that.

  203. We're the same people

  204. that we meticulously review

  205. our end-of-the-year statements

  206. and contributions, right?

  207. Because we're going to make sure

  208. that the IRS gives us credit

  209. for everything that we gave

  210. to the church this year.

  211. And we end up becoming

  212. consumed with giving

  213. in a way that we shouldn't

  214. be consumed with.

  215. We get very technical

  216. on things that we don't

  217. otherwise get technical on

  218. at all.

  219. And I wrote in conviction

  220. that how rarely we seem

  221. to determine the minimum amount

  222. that we can live on

  223. in order that we can give

  224. the most possible to the Lord.

  225. Instead, we often determine

  226. the minimum that we can give

  227. to appease the Lord

  228. in order that we may keep

  229. the most possible for ourselves.

  230. And unfortunately,

  231. that's the way most of us think.

  232. And that goes back

  233. to that issue of contentment

  234. and that inward focus

  235. and not making worship

  236. and ministry a priority

  237. and sometimes even fear.

  238. The discussion of money

  239. and giving has for some reason

  240. become taboo among Christians

  241. these days.

  242. We don't like to talk about it.

  243. It can be uncomfortable.

  244. But I think the Bible

  245. says a lot about this.

  246. And the intent of our study today

  247. is not to get into

  248. those technicalities

  249. about what we're supposed

  250. to give

  251. and when we're supposed

  252. to give it

  253. and to who we're supposed

  254. to give.

  255. Because that's not what

  256. this passage deals with.

  257. The passage really deals with

  258. and meditates on

  259. the spirit of our giving.

  260. Why do we give?

  261. And how are we to give

  262. in regards to our character

  263. and our spirit in doing so?

  264. That's really largely

  265. the difference

  266. in the topic of giving

  267. and generosity

  268. between the Old Testament

  269. and the New Testament.

  270. In the Old Testament

  271. we see many more passages

  272. that designate

  273. this is how much to give

  274. and this is when to give it

  275. and this is how to give it

  276. and where you take it

  277. and all these kinds of things.

  278. And there were all kinds

  279. of instructions

  280. in the Old Testament

  281. for that.

  282. But the New Testament

  283. really deals with giving

  284. in a very different way.

  285. To the best of my knowledge

  286. there's no passage

  287. in the New Testament

  288. that says you're supposed

  289. to give this amount

  290. or this percentage

  291. or this thing

  292. and you're supposed

  293. to give it on this day

  294. and in this place

  295. and there are things

  296. that we can deduce

  297. from all of that

  298. but there's no direct command

  299. in that.

  300. What the New Testament

  301. deals with

  302. and what our passage

  303. in Philippians 4 deals with

  304. is the spirit behind our giving

  305. that we give sacrificially

  306. to the Lord

  307. that we give cheerfully

  308. to the Lord

  309. that we give with ministry

  310. in mind

  311. and the Lord's work

  312. in mind

  313. and that we do that

  314. with a grateful spirit

  315. in worship.

  316. In these verses

  317. nothing instructional

  318. is given.

  319. There is no direct command.

  320. Paul's not telling

  321. the Philippian church

  322. to give.

  323. He didn't have to

  324. because they were

  325. already giving.

  326. He was simply commending them

  327. on how faithful

  328. they had been

  329. and they again

  330. become the premier example

  331. for us

  332. of how a congregation

  333. is to view generosity.

  334. There's three individual words

  335. that I've used

  336. just to help my own study.

  337. Perhaps it'll be helpful

  338. to your study

  339. of this passage as well.

  340. We're only going to get

  341. to the first one today.

  342. We'll get to the other two

  343. next week

  344. but the first one

  345. that I have for a heading

  346. in verses 15 to 17

  347. is the word share.

  348. The word share.

  349. Look with me again

  350. at verse number 15.

  351. Now you Philippians

  352. know also

  353. that in the beginning

  354. of the gospel

  355. when I departed

  356. from Macedonia

  357. no church communicated

  358. with me

  359. as concerning

  360. giving and receiving

  361. but you only.

  362. For even in Thessalonica

  363. you sent once and again

  364. unto my necessity.

  365. Not because I desire gift.

  366. I'm not saying this

  367. because I want you

  368. to give more.

  369. I just desire fruit

  370. that may abound

  371. to your account.

  372. He says

  373. no church communicated

  374. with me

  375. concerning giving

  376. and receiving

  377. except you.

  378. You only.

  379. And we've noted before

  380. several times actually

  381. in the book of Philippians

  382. what this word

  383. communicated

  384. means.

  385. It comes from

  386. that Greek word family

  387. from koinonia.

  388. It means fellowship

  389. or partnership

  390. active participation

  391. sharing in.

  392. It's the same word

  393. we find in

  394. chapter 1

  395. and verse 5

  396. when Paul thanked them

  397. for their partnership

  398. in the gospel.

  399. Their fellowship

  400. in the gospel.

  401. It's the same word

  402. used in chapter 2

  403. and verse 1

  404. when he talked about

  405. having fellowship

  406. with the Holy Spirit.

  407. It's the same word

  408. he uses in chapter 3

  409. and verse 10

  410. when he says

  411. that I may know him

  412. and the power

  413. of his resurrection

  414. and the fellowship

  415. of his sufferings

  416. being made conformable

  417. unto Christ's death.

  418. And then again

  419. as we saw last week

  420. the conclusion

  421. in verse 14

  422. he uses it again

  423. that they did communicate

  424. with him in affliction.

  425. Paul's once again

  426. referring to their partnership

  427. in the gospel

  428. but this time

  429. it's with an emphasis

  430. on sharing in

  431. and being an active participant

  432. in the gospel work.

  433. Given the context

  434. of the passage

  435. it's not difficult

  436. to make the connection.

  437. He was specifically referring

  438. to how they had participated

  439. with him

  440. in the ministry

  441. through the sharing

  442. of their resources.

  443. And he said

  444. that they had shared

  445. in giving and receiving.

  446. Those are technical

  447. accounting words

  448. in the Greek.

  449. It could literally read

  450. credits and debits.

  451. You have shared with me

  452. in crediting

  453. and in debiting

  454. this sharing

  455. back and forth

  456. of the gospel work

  457. and of gospel resources.

  458. Not only had they shared

  459. their resources

  460. for the gospel

  461. but they had shared

  462. in the blessings

  463. that came

  464. from that gospel work.

  465. And verses 15 through 17

  466. I think share with us

  467. or give us

  468. three ways

  469. that they did share

  470. through their giving

  471. and that we can also share

  472. as a church

  473. in our giving.

  474. First

  475. they shared

  476. in the work

  477. of the gospel.

  478. They shared

  479. in the work itself.

  480. Look again

  481. at verse 15.

  482. He says

  483. now you Philippians

  484. know also

  485. that in the beginning

  486. of the gospel

  487. you only gave.

  488. Philippian church

  489. wanted so much

  490. to be a part

  491. of the work

  492. of the gospel

  493. across the world

  494. that it actually

  495. became the motivation

  496. for their giving.

  497. They weren't giving

  498. to Paul

  499. because Paul

  500. demanded it.

  501. They weren't giving

  502. in order that they may

  503. earn some type

  504. of favor with God.

  505. They weren't giving

  506. in order to earn

  507. their salvation.

  508. They were giving

  509. because they were

  510. passionate about

  511. the work

  512. of the gospel

  513. and they wanted

  514. to partner

  515. in that work

  516. in whatever way

  517. they could.

  518. In fact

  519. Paul clearly says

  520. in this

  521. from the very beginning

  522. of the start

  523. of their church

  524. in Acts 16

  525. they invested

  526. financially

  527. in this work

  528. even when nobody

  529. else was investing

  530. in helping Paul

  531. and his team.

  532. In the beginning

  533. of the work

  534. in Philippi

  535. that is.

  536. They began

  537. to give

  538. and for a time

  539. they were the only

  540. congregation

  541. giving.

  542. They believed

  543. in what he was doing.

  544. They were passionate

  545. about that work

  546. just like we are

  547. in the ways

  548. that we give.

  549. We give to certain

  550. things with our kids

  551. as they grow up

  552. because we're passionate

  553. about our kids.

  554. We're passionate

  555. about them pursuing

  556. certain things

  557. in their life

  558. that will help them

  559. and so we give

  560. to that

  561. and we invest

  562. in that.

  563. We have other ways

  564. outside of the church

  565. that we give

  566. and that's important.

  567. We're generous

  568. to other people

  569. and other causes

  570. because we're passionate

  571. about those things

  572. but then we get

  573. to the Philippian

  574. congregation.

  575. Why did they give

  576. even out of poverty?

  577. They gave

  578. because they were

  579. passionate about the work.

  580. They were passionate

  581. about the gospel

  582. and they wanted

  583. to partner

  584. with Paul

  585. in whatever work

  586. he was doing

  587. in taking the name

  588. of Christ

  589. across the world.

  590. There's a lot

  591. of good causes

  592. out there

  593. but none of them

  594. are as significant

  595. as the work

  596. of the gospel

  597. of Jesus

  598. and for us

  599. the greatest investment

  600. we can make

  601. in a material way

  602. is an investment

  603. in the gospel

  604. and in the work

  605. of the gospel

  606. around the world.

  607. One of the significant

  608. blessings of giving

  609. faithfully to the work

  610. of the gospel

  611. is that it makes you

  612. a partner

  613. in that work.

  614. You literally share

  615. in the work

  616. of God

  617. when you cheerfully

  618. give

  619. for its advancement.

  620. You literally

  621. koinonia

  622. partner with

  623. communicate

  624. with God

  625. in that work.

  626. You become

  627. a participant

  628. in it.

  629. Now think about it.

  630. Most of the people

  631. in Philippi

  632. were incapable

  633. of going with Paul

  634. to Thessalonica.

  635. They couldn't just

  636. uproot themselves

  637. and their families

  638. and go.

  639. Maybe there were

  640. other hindrances.

  641. Perhaps some of them

  642. did maybe

  643. make some trips

  644. from time to time

  645. to try to help

  646. in the work

  647. that was going

  648. but most of them

  649. were incapable

  650. of doing that.

  651. So how could

  652. they partner?

  653. They gave.

  654. They found a way

  655. to finance the work.

  656. Found a way

  657. to finance the ministry

  658. and in that

  659. they became partners

  660. and participants

  661. in the work itself

  662. and the same goes

  663. with us.

  664. You may never be called

  665. to go to a specific

  666. place around the world

  667. to start churches

  668. or preach the gospel

  669. but you can partner

  670. in gospel work

  671. by giving to the Lord

  672. in that way.

  673. What a glorious way

  674. we have

  675. of stewarding

  676. the prosperity

  677. that we have

  678. and being citizens

  679. of the richest nation

  680. on the planet

  681. than taking

  682. that prosperity

  683. and giving it back

  684. to the Lord

  685. and his work

  686. across the world.

  687. So they shared

  688. in the work of God.

  689. Why did they give?

  690. They had to share.

  691. They communicated with

  692. in the work itself.

  693. Secondly,

  694. they shared

  695. in the needs

  696. of others.

  697. They shared

  698. in the needs

  699. of others.

  700. Look with me

  701. at verse 16.

  702. For even in Thessalonica

  703. or as Julie

  704. and I would argue

  705. sometimes I want

  706. to say Thessalonica.

  707. She wants to say

  708. Thessalonica.

  709. I'll let you guys

  710. correct us later

  711. after the service.

  712. For even in Thessalonica

  713. you sent once

  714. and again

  715. unto my necessity.

  716. In verse 16

  717. the Philippian church

  718. sets the example

  719. for faithful

  720. repetitive giving.

  721. It wasn't a one time

  722. offering.

  723. Once and again

  724. he says

  725. over and over

  726. you sent

  727. to my need

  728. in Thessalonica.

  729. Even after Paul

  730. had left Philippi

  731. Acts 17

  732. tells us

  733. that he continued

  734. on to Thessalonica

  735. and he stayed

  736. there for a few

  737. months

  738. and in his

  739. months there

  740. multiple times

  741. this church

  742. invested

  743. helped

  744. gave

  745. to what

  746. he and his

  747. team were doing.

  748. So in verse 15

  749. Paul commended

  750. them for sharing

  751. in the work

  752. of the gospel

  753. but in verse 16

  754. he commends

  755. them for ministering

  756. specifically

  757. to his need.

  758. He says

  759. you sent

  760. unto my

  761. necessity

  762. he said.

  763. This further

  764. reveals the spirit

  765. of the Philippians

  766. giving.

  767. They had a passion

  768. for gospel ministry

  769. but they also

  770. had a great passion

  771. for meeting

  772. the needs

  773. of others.

  774. Even if it

  775. meant stepping

  776. into the realm

  777. of poverty

  778. themselves

  779. they had a

  780. completely

  781. outward focus

  782. in giving.

  783. It wasn't about

  784. what they could get.

  785. It wasn't about

  786. what they could

  787. build up for

  788. themselves.

  789. It was about

  790. what they could

  791. give not only

  792. the gospel work

  793. but to help

  794. meet the needs

  795. of other people.

  796. And this wasn't

  797. the only time

  798. that the Philippians

  799. cared for others'

  800. needs.

  801. It's a pattern

  802. throughout the

  803. scripture.

  804. In fact

  805. in Romans chapter

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  806. 15 Paul's

  807. writing to the

  808. Roman church

  809. about how he

  810. desires to

  811. come to them

  812. and visit with

  813. them but he

  814. couldn't write

  815. then because

  816. he was taking

  817. a gift from

  818. the church in

  819. Philippi to

  820. the poor church

  821. in Jerusalem.

  822. Here's what he

  823. said in Romans

  824. 15.

  825. At present

  826. however I am

  827. going to

  828. Jerusalem bringing

  829. aid to the

  830. saints.

  831. For Macedonia

  832. and Achaia

  833. have been

  834. pleased to

  835. make some

  836. contribution

  837. for the poor

  838. among the

  839. saints at

  840. Jerusalem.

  841. For they

  842. were pleased

  843. to do it

  844. and indeed

  845. they owe

  846. it to them

  847. Paul said.

  848. For if the

  849. Gentiles have

  850. come to share

  851. in the spiritual

  852. blessings they

  853. ought also to

  854. be a service

  855. to them in

  856. material blessings.

  857. They had a

  858. passion to meet

  859. the needs of

  860. others specifically

  861. to meet the

  862. needs of other

  863. believers and of

  864. other churches and

  865. we ought to have

  866. that same passion.

  867. there's three

  868. ways I wrote

  869. down this

  870. week that our

  871. giving our

  872. regular faithful

  873. giving as a

  874. church helps to

  875. meet the needs

  876. of others.

  877. First our giving

  878. helps to meet the

  879. needs of the

  880. poor.

  881. It helps actually

  882. go to meet the

  883. needs of people in

  884. our church and

  885. people in our

  886. community that need

  887. help and we have a

  888. heart for that and

  889. we want to continue

  890. to have a heart for

  891. that.

  892. One of the

  893. consistent descriptions

  894. of the church in the

  895. New Testament is this

  896. realm of meeting

  897. needs for one

  898. another.

  899. Flip with me just

  900. quickly over to the

  901. left to Acts chapter

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  902. 2.

  903. I'm sure you're

  904. familiar well with

  905. the, very familiar

  906. with the passage

  907. itself.

  908. It's a fantastic

  909. description of what

  910. the character of the

  911. church is supposed

  912. to be.

  913. Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  914. look with me at

  915. verse 44.

  916. Luke writes,

  917. all that believed

  918. worked together.

  919. There's a unity

  920. here.

  921. And they had all

  922. things in common

  923. and they sold their

  924. possessions and goods

  925. and parted them to

  926. all men as every man

  927. had a need.

  928. One of the primary

  929. characteristics of the

  930. early church was that

  931. they were willing to

  932. take their excess and

  933. do away with it in

  934. order that those less

  935. fortunate in the church

  936. could actually have the

  937. basic necessities of

  938. life.

  939. This wasn't communal

  940. living in the sense

  941. that they pulled all

  942. their stuff together and

  943. everybody had the same

  944. exact thing.

  945. There were still some

  946. people that had more

  947. than others but those

  948. who had excess were

  949. willing to give up that

  950. excess in order to meet

  951. the needs of those that

  952. didn't have a lot.

  953. That should be our

  954. heart as a church.

  955. That should be our

  956. heart.

  957. We give through the

  958. church in order to help

  959. others in the church or

  960. even we give just

  961. personally to other

  962. people in the church

  963. that we see have a

  964. need.

  965. This is to be the heart

  966. of believers and of

  967. Christians.

  968. Our giving helps to do

  969. that.

  970. Our giving supports

  971. ministers of the

  972. gospel.

  973. The New Testament

  974. teaches that the

  975. regular giving of the

  976. church is to provide a

  977. living for pastors and

  978. missionaries.

  979. While not every pastor is

  980. able to survive on the

  981. income of the church

  982. alone, it should be the

  983. desire and goal for the

  984. church to provide a

  985. living for those who

  986. lead it.

  987. And the scripture is

  988. clear in that.

  989. Our giving helps to do

  990. that.

  991. Not just for me.

  992. It helps to give to the

  993. missionaries that we love,

  994. the people that we want to

  995. help.

  996. It helps ministers of the

  997. gospel just like the

  998. Philippians helped Paul and

  999. his team.

  1000. Thirdly, our giving supports

  1001. the needs of church

  1002. ministry.

  1003. It's through our regular

  1004. giving of the congregation

  1005. that we're able to rent a

1006. facility to meet in, to pay

1007. the rent and pay the bills,

1008. for us to have tools that

1009. help us to preach the

  1010. gospel, to supply basic

  1011. needs like outreach materials

  1012. and church Bibles that

1013. people can use that won't

1014. have one, or service guides,

1015. other things that help us.

1016. All of these things go to

  1017. meet the needs, and that's a

  1018. part of it.

1019. They gave to his necessity.

  1020. I was listening.

1021. You've heard me talk about

  1022. often.

1023. Alistair Begg is probably my

  1024. favorite preacher, and I

1025. listen to him preach a lot,

1026. and I listened to him

1027. earlier this week preach on

1028. this passage, and in it he

  1029. talked about two different

1030. types of sharing or two

  1031. different types of giving.

1032. He used different words, but

  1033. he said basically there's

  1034. reciprocal sharing and

  1035. there is necessary sharing.

  1036. Reciprocal sharing is giving

1037. on the basis of reciprocity.

1038. For instance, you would have

1039. somebody over to your house, a

  1040. family that's similar to

  1041. yours.

1042. They come over and you share

1043. with them your home and your

1044. food and the material things

1045. that you have, knowing that at

1046. some point, maybe a few weeks

1047. later, they're going to invite

1048. you over to their house, and

1049. they're going to share in the

1050. same things with you that you

1051. have shared in with them.

1052. You share with one another by

  1053. reciprocating acts of

  1054. kindness, and there's nothing

1055. wrong with this kind of

  1056. sharing.

  1057. It's actually necessary and

1058. good, and most of us are going

1059. to be involved with that a lot

  1060. in our lives.

  1061. That's a good thing.

1062. That's what the church was

  1063. doing, this reciprocal

  1064. sharing.

1065. It's not that you share because

1066. it will be reciprocated, but it's

1067. not so much of a gift as it is

  1068. kind of a trade-off.

  1069. You're helping one another.

  1070. You're sharing with one

  1071. another.

  1072. Secondly, there's necessary

1073. sharing, and this is the other

  1074. side to that.

1075. It's giving on the basis of no

  1076. reciprocity at all.

1077. For instance, you invite someone

1078. to your home who's less

  1079. fortunate.

1080. You share your home and your

1081. food and your time with them

1082. knowing full well that they'll

1083. never be able to reciprocate

  1084. that kindness.

1085. It's the kind of giving that

  1086. should mark the church.

1087. We should be more than willing

1088. to help those that cannot help

1089. us and that cannot benefit us in

  1090. any way.

1091. And to be truthful, this kind of

1092. sharing is the most Christ-infused

  1093. form of giving.

1094. Jesus sets the example in this.

1095. As we studied so often in

1096. Philippians chapter 2, who made

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1097. himself of no reputation.

1098. He set aside the glories of heaven,

1099. and he shared himself with us, and

1100. he took on our sin, and he took on

1101. our punishment, shared in that with

1102. us, knowing full well that we could

1103. never reciprocate that kindness for

  1104. him.

1105. There is never anything we could do

1106. that could repay him for what he

  1107. has done for us.

1108. He sets the tone for this giving

1109. for us, and we're to take that

1110. example of Christ in the gospel,

1111. and we're to demonstrate that to

  1112. others.

1113. Pick somebody in your life.

1114. Find somebody in the church.

1115. Find somebody in your community that

1116. you can bless with the gospel of

1117. Christ, knowing full well that

1118. they'll never be able to pay you

  1119. back.

1120. They shared in the work of the

  1121. gospel.

1122. They shared in the needs of others,

1123. thirdly, and finally, they shared in

1124. the fruit of the gospel.

1125. They shared in the fruit of the

  1126. gospel.

  1127. Look at verse 17.

1128. Paul says, I'm not saying this

1129. because I desire you to send more,

1130. but I desire that fruit may abound to

  1131. your account.

1132. Fruit may abound to your account.

1133. He wasn't manipulating them to send

1134. more money or to keep the checks

  1135. coming.

1136. He was reminding them that what they

1137. have done in their sacrificial,

1138. faithful giving will be rewarded with

  1139. fruitfulness in gospel ministry.

1140. It's not that they would be able to

1141. look back and think, okay, I gave a

1142. hundred bucks to the Lord this week.

1143. That means the Lord's going to give me

1144. a hundred bucks back in some way this

  1145. week.

1146. That's not what this giving was about.

1147. That's not the fruitfulness of giving.

1148. The fruitfulness of giving is that as

1149. we give to the Lord, he provides gospel

1150. fruit in the places that this money

1151. goes and that it goes to support his

  1152. work.

1153. I desire fruit that may abound to your

  1154. account.

1155. This is an expansion really on their

  1156. share in the work.

1157. Not only could they participate in gospel

1158. work around the world, but whatever fruit

1159. God produced through that work would be

  1160. credited to their account.

  1161. Here's what's so awesome about this.

1162. They not only shared in the work, they

1163. shared in the results of the work.

1164. How exciting is that for us as

  1165. believers?

1166. That as we give faithfully to the Lord

1167. week in and week out and we send this

1168. money to help reach the people in our

1169. area with the gospel and we send it

1170. across the world to various missionaries,

1171. we can rejoice and share in the results

  1172. of that gospel work.

1173. As people are saved, as people are

1174. baptized and added to the church, we

1175. can rejoice because we got to have a

1176. part in that, not in a prideful way, but

  1177. in a humble way.

1178. We can rejoice with them and share in

1179. the results of that ministry.

1180. We'll be rewarded by God for the fruit

1181. that he bore even when we didn't know

  1182. he was using us.

  1183. How awesome is that?

1184. Many of us will go through life and

  1185. we'll labor and we'll serve and we'll

1186. give and not just in material giving, but

1187. in other ways, our time and our efforts,

  1188. giving to gospel work.

1189. And we may rarely see the fruit of that

1190. ourselves, but it doesn't mean that the

1191. fruit of it isn't going out.

1192. The blessing is one day we will see the

  1193. fruit of it.

1194. One day in eternity we'll rejoice with

1195. those people who came to Christ because

1196. we had a small part in giving or we gave

1197. them a church invitation or we gave them a

1198. Bible or whatever it was.

1199. We will get to rejoice in that fruit even

1200. if we don't see it now.

1201. And Paul desired that for this Philippian

  1202. church.

1203. They shared in the work, they shared in the

1204. needs, and they shared in the fruit.

1205. And as we close, I want to take just a

1206. minute to reflect on how we as Lakeside

1207. Bible Church have experienced this blessing

1208. of sharing in the gospel.

1209. It's because of the faithful giving of

1210. other congregations that we've been able to

1211. get started as a church.

1212. Every month there are 12 different churches

1213. that send our congregation financial support.

1214. And there are many more than that that gave

1215. gifts at some point over the last year, year

1216. and a half, in order to help us buy the truck and

1217. trailer that we use every week, that have bought

1218. the sound equipment that we have and the

1219. backdrops and all the things that you see.

1220. They've helped us provide this.

1221. That was out of their generosity that we were

  1222. able to do that.

1223. It's because of their generosity that we even

1224. have an opportunity to consider a potential lease

  1225. agreement in a building.

1226. We as a church have been the beneficiaries of this

  1227. kind of giving.

1228. And it came from many congregations that know full

1229. well that at least in the immediate time, we're

1230. incapable of reciprocating that giving back.

1231. Why do they do that?

  1232. Because of the gospel.

1233. Because they're passionate about the work.

1234. They want to share in the work of the gospel that we're

  1235. doing here in Cornelius.

1236. They want to share in the fruit that God may provide in his

1237. own way and in his own purposes through our church.

1238. They want to share in the needs of other believers across

1239. the state and across the country and across the world that

1240. need basic supplies in order to take the gospel around the

  1241. world.

  1242. They're passionate about that.

1243. So it doesn't bother them to sacrifice of themselves.

1244. They give knowing that they'll never get it back in return.

1245. They give because they're passionate about the gospel.

  1246. It's an investment.

1247. But then we've also been able to share with others.

  1248. And I love this.

1249. Even in the short life of our church, we've been able to help

  1250. a lot.

1251. We've been able to give a lot for a small church.

1252. And I want you to know this message and the context of it,

1253. especially as we get into next week, this isn't corrective on

  1254. my part.

1255. I feel blessed to pastor a very generous church.

1256. And I'm thankful for each of you that faithfully give.

1257. Some every week faithfully give generously to our ministry.

1258. It's because of your faithful giving that this year we've been

1259. able to send more than $5,000 to other missionaries and other

  1260. church planners.

1261. Because you have given, you get to share in the gospel work of

1262. these ministries that we've been able to partner with.

1263. And we rejoice in that.

1264. It's because of your generosity that I'm able to fully commit my

1265. time to be your pastor.

1266. And I don't have to work a second job right now.

1267. That's because of your generosity.

1268. It's because of your generosity that we're able to save every week

1269. for the future of our ministry, whether it be at the place that's

1270. just down the road in Cornelius, whether it be in another place,

1271. we get to save right now because you are generous in giving.

1272. So thank you for your giving.

1273. And like Paul, I want to encourage you to continue in that.

1274. Because I want to see that fruit applied to your account,

1275. to the account of our church, as we faithfully seek to partner with

1276. people in the gospel, as we seek to meet the needs of others,

1277. and as we seek to share in the fruit of the gospel as well.

1278. I want us to care about meeting the needs of people.

1279. I want our church to share in the fruit of God's blessing.

1280. And I want all of this because I truly believe it's what God desires for us.
