  7. Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  8. Let's go ahead and start reading at verse number 1 and we'll read down to verse number 8.

  9. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  10. As it is written in the prophets,

  11. John did baptize in the wilderness and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

  12. And there went out unto him all the land of Judea and they of Jerusalem

  13. and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

  14. And John was clothed with camel's hair and with a girdle of skin about his loins.

  15. And he did eat locust and wild honey.

  16. And preached, saying,

  17. There cometh one mightier than I after me,

  18. the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

  19. I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

  20. Everything that we study in the gospel of Mark must be primarily viewed

  21. through the lens of Mark's stated purpose in verse 1,

  22. which reads,

  23. This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  24. Now Mark's goal in writing this collection of eyewitness accounts of the life of Jesus

  25. was specifically to proclaim that Jesus of Nazareth is indeed the Messiah, the Son of God.

  26. His desire here in this gospel is not to tell the story of Jesus.

  27. His desire in this gospel is to make a definitive statement about Jesus.

  28. So we do not understand the gospels to be biographies.

  29. That's not what they are.

  30. They are gospels.

  31. They are proclamations of good news.

  32. And the material contained within the pages that we'll study

  33. is the evidence that Mark gives to support this purpose statement.

  34. So in verse 1 he says,

  35. Jesus is the Christ.

  36. He's the Messiah.

  37. He's the Son of God.

  38. Everything that then follows after is the evidence that builds and supports Mark's case.

  39. And so when we come to each and every passage, beginning with this one today,

  40. we have to first start with this question.

  41. How did Mark intend for this passage to point us to Jesus Christ

  42. as the Messiah and the Son of God?

  43. So that's where we begin.

  44. Not only here, but really any particular passage that we would study in the Bible,

  45. ask that question.

  46. But as we view this book through the lens of Mark's gospel,

  47. we ask how does he want us to see Christ here?

  48. How is he proving to us in these verses that Jesus is indeed the Son of God?

  49. I spoke at length last week about the significance of this term gospel,

  50. the Greek equivalent being euangelion.

  51. It's used in the first verse to describe exactly what Mark's doing.

  52. Now both the ancient Jews and the Romans would have understood the reference here.

  53. He's speaking specifically to a herald that would go from town to town announcing the arrival of a king

  54. that has come to save his people.

  55. In the scripture, it always refers to the message of salvation.

  56. So Mark stated that his writing was such a proclamation,

  57. and Jesus is that very king.

  58. That's the significance of the term itself.

  59. But as he begins to give evidence to the fact that Jesus is indeed the king,

  60. that he is indeed the Messiah and Son of God,

  61. if he's going to use this term gospel,

  62. it only makes sense that there would be a literal herald that would go before this king,

  63. that would go before this Messiah in order to announce his arrival,

  64. to announce his coming, and to prepare the way.

  65. And that's exactly what he does in these verses.

  66. He builds his case by speaking to the significance of a man that we have come to know as John the Baptist,

  67. or probably even better, John the Baptizer.

  68. Look with me again at verse 2, the very first phrase there.

  69. As it is written in the prophets, this is the beginning of Mark's proof.

  70. He doesn't do his proof based on his own rationale or his own capabilities of reasoning.

  71. Mark turns to the scriptures.

  72. That's where we must always turn first.

  73. If it's going to be our goal to share the gospel of Jesus with others,

  74. to persuade and convince others that Jesus is indeed the Christ,

  75. we must not start with our own reasoning.

  76. We cannot start with our own rationale.

  77. We must turn to the scriptures.

  78. And that's exactly what Mark does.

  79. Now it's important for us to acknowledge here

  80. that John's ministry didn't happen by chance.

  81. It wasn't that the gospel writers were noticing John

  82. and noticing what was going on in this ministry prior to Jesus

  83. and this wilderness fanatic, which is really what most people would have viewed him as.

  84. It's not that they noticed this guy's life and thought,

  85. you know what, this would make our story about Jesus so much spicier,

  86. so much more significant.

  87. Maybe we'll add this in there,

  88. and maybe we'll get a few more copies and publications sold to make a little more money.

  89. That's not what's happening here.

  90. They're not including John's story here to make their story better.

  91. This was a part of God's plan from before the foundation of the world,

  92. as Ephesians 1 tells us.

  93. We cannot separate the ministry of John the Baptist from the gospel of Jesus.

  94. The true identity of who Jesus is cannot be understood fully

  95. apart from the fulfillment of these prophecies to which Mark is referring

  96. here in these first two verses.

  97. And so we don't come to it thinking this was a really unique guy,

  98. maybe this helps us understand the context.

  99. No, there is a specific purpose that Mark has written about John.

  100. It is the specific purpose of proclaiming who Jesus is,

  101. and so that's the lens that we see.

  102. All four gospel writers, even Jesus himself,

  103. emphasizes the life, ministry, and preaching of John the Baptist.

  104. John was a voice.

  105. John was the voice.

  106. The voice that was set aside hundreds of years before

  107. to prepare the way for Jesus.

  108. And to help us with our understanding today,

  109. I've kind of grouped these verses into two categories.

  110. We're looking at the voice in the wilderness.

  111. First, we'll see the voice prophesied,

  112. and then we're going to see the voice personified.

  113. Let's first look at the voice prophesied in verses 2 and 3.

  114. Would you read it with me again?

  115. As it is written in the prophets,

  116. Behold, I send my messenger before thy face,

  117. which shall prepare thy way before thee.

  118. The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  119. prepare ye the way of the Lord.

  120. Make his paths straight.

  121. Now, it's helpful for us here to be reminded of the fact,

  122. and maybe even exult in the fact,

  123. that God is a God who speaks.

  124. He speaks.

  125. It's by the very power of his word

  126. that all of creation came to be.

  127. God said, let there be light,

  128. and there was light.

  129. And we see that demonstrated through the creation story.

  130. Really, all throughout the scriptures,

  131. we see the power of God's word in creation.

  132. We also find that as we study the scriptures,

  133. that the scriptures themselves are the very words of God.

  134. It is his way of speaking,

  135. his revelation of himself,

  136. the revelation of his plan of redemption.

  137. He speaks that to us.

  138. Now, take just a moment before we move any further

  139. and contemplate how glorious of a truth that is.

  140. That not only did God create you,

  141. not only did he provide this life that you enjoy today,

  142. not only does he know that your life can only be fulfilled

  143. as it is related to a personal relationship with he and his son,

  144. Jesus Christ,

  145. but he has actually spoken to you through his word,

  146. through creation,

  147. in order that you may know him.

  148. He is a God who speaks.

  149. And as we come to this passage,

  150. and we're looking to verify the identity of Jesus

  151. through the identity of John the Baptist,

  152. we see that it is God's grace that has spoken to us in this way.

  153. He has spoken about John the Baptist,

  154. and then he has spoken through John the Baptist.

  155. But the most significant way in which God speaks

  156. is through his son.

  157. Hebrews chapter one,

  158. and the whole book opens this way.

  159. Long ago, at many times and in many ways,

  160. God spoke to our fathers by the prophets.

  161. But in these last days,

  162. that is the days in which you and I live,

  163. he has spoken through his son.

  164. And he goes on, the writer of Hebrews,

  165. to say that the son is the exact imprint

  166. of the nature of God.

  167. It's a wonderful revelation.

  168. How do we know who God is?

  169. We look at Jesus.

  170. How do we understand God's love for us?

  171. We look at Jesus.

  172. How do we understand God's purpose for us?

  173. We look at Jesus.

  174. He has spoken to us,

  175. not only through creation and through the prophets,

  176. but in these last days,

  177. through his son.

  178. So now we understand that all true revelation

  179. points us to Jesus Christ,

  180. because that's the way in which God has now spoken.

  181. Mark wasn't writing about John

  182. because he was particularly impressed by him,

  183. even though I'm sure that his ministry

  184. would have impacted Mark in a unique way

  185. as he was not alive during that time,

  186. but at least as he recalled it and heard of it.

  187. The ministry of John the baptizer

  188. was only relevant to the gospel writers

  189. in so far as it was connected to the person

  190. and the work of Jesus.

  191. So they only wrote of John the baptist

  192. as it was in connection

  193. with these Old Testament prophecies

  194. about the herald of the coming Messiah.

  195. That's why no other intertestamental preachers

  196. are mentioned for us in the New Testament.

  197. Why is it that John is singled out?

  198. Because there was a specific purpose to John.

  199. He wasn't just a preacher.

  200. He was the voice,

  201. the one that long ago had been said

  202. would come and prepare the way for the Messiah.

  203. So let's look at these two prophecies.

  204. There's two of them that Mark actually quotes here,

  205. Malachi chapter three and Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  206. In fact, I think it would be helpful

  207. for us to actually turn to them.

  208. So if you would,

  209. turn with me first to Malachi chapter three.

  210. This is the passage that Mark is quoting

  211. in verse number two.

  212. Malachi chapter three, verse number one.

  213. Behold, I will send my messenger

  214. and he shall prepare the way before me

  215. and the Lord whom you seek

  216. shall suddenly come to his temple,

  217. even the messenger of the covenant

  218. whom you delight in.

  219. Behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

  220. Now keep your finger there

  221. and flip over to Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  222. This is the other one.

  223. In verse number three,

  224. Mark quotes Isaiah chapter 40,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  225. this other prophecy.

  226. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness,

  227. prepare ye the way of the Lord.

  228. Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

  229. These are the two scriptures that Mark quotes here.

  230. It's how he opens his gospel.

  231. He gives his stated purpose

  232. and then he immediately goes to the scripture

  233. and he says, here's what the scripture says.

  234. Malachi 3, 1, Isaiah 40 and verse three.

  235. And then he applies those scriptures

  236. specifically to John the Baptist.

  237. Now there's a couple of ways

  238. that these scriptures speak about who John is.

  239. Let's talk about what they say about John.

  240. First, they say that he will prepare the way.

  241. We just read it.

  242. A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Isaiah says,

  243. prepare ye the way of the Lord.

  244. In Malachi chapter three,

  245. I will send my messenger.

  246. He shall prepare the way.

  247. There's a cultural significance to this statement.

  248. There was a custom of near Eastern kings

  249. that as they would travel from place to place,

  250. they would send a herald ahead of them.

  251. And that herald had a specific job.

  252. He was not only to proclaim the coming of the king,

  253. that's a part of it, we'll get to that in just a second.

  254. He was to prepare literally the way of the king,

  255. the way that the king would travel.

  256. That involved clearing obstacles out of the path.

  257. It involved straightening crooked roads

  258. or crooked valleys that the king

  259. and his envoy would have to travel through.

  260. It involved creating causeways over swampy areas

  261. or areas that would have been difficult

  262. to traverse on the ground.

  263. It involved preparing the way quite literally.

  264. And these Old Testament writers

  265. take this cultural context and they say

  266. that when the Messiah comes,

  267. there will be one that goes before him

  268. and he will prepare the way.

  269. He will remove the obstacles.

  270. He will not only announce the coming of the Messiah,

  271. but he will make the way of the Messiah straight.

  272. He will prepare the hearts of the people to receive him.

  273. So what do these verses say about John?

  274. He'll prepare the way.

  275. Then they say that he will be a voice

  276. and specifically that he will be a voice in the wilderness.

  277. Both prophecies emphasize the fact

  278. that the forerunning herald would be a voice

  279. and a messenger.

  280. Voice is the word used by Isaiah 43

  281. and messenger by Malachi chapter three.

  282. Speaking on behalf of God,

  283. the preparations would be made for the Messiah

  284. by this forerunner

  285. and would be focused particularly on his preaching.

  286. That's the significance of this herald.

  287. How do we know that this was John?

  288. Because this is what the scripture said he would do.

  289. There's a focus on his preaching.

  290. He would be noticed by the people specifically

  291. because of the content of his message

  292. and the way in which he would deliver it.

  293. Isaiah says he will be a voice of one crying out

  294. in the wilderness preparing the way of the Lord.

  295. All four gospel writers take these two prophecies

  296. and they apply them specifically to John the Baptist.

  297. Matthew does it in chapter three of his gospel.

  298. Here's what he says.

  299. Now in the days,

  300. in those days,

  301. John the Baptist came

  302. preaching in the wilderness of Judea

  303. saying,

  304. repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand

  305. for this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet

  306. when he said,

  307. the voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  308. make ready the way of the Lord,

  309. make his paths straight.

  310. Luke chapter three does the same thing.

  311. And he came into all the district around the Jordan

  312. preaching a baptism of repentance

  313. for the forgiveness of sins

  314. as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah.

  315. The prophet Luke writes,

  316. the voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  317. make ready the way of the Lord,

  318. make his paths straight.

  319. Every ravine will be filled.

  320. Every mountain and hill will be brought low.

  321. The crooked will become straight

  322. and the rough road smooth

  323. and all flesh will see the salvation of our God.

  324. And then we get to the gospel of John

  325. and his claim comes in a little bit of a different way.

  326. This time it's John the Baptist himself

  327. making this claim.

  328. He says,

  329. I am that one.

  330. The gospel of John chapter one in verse 23.

  331. He said,

  332. I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  333. make straight the way of the Lord,

  334. as Isaiah the prophet said.

  335. And you may be here today and you may say,

  336. well, it doesn't really matter to me very much

  337. what John claimed himself to be.

  338. And maybe those other gospel writers

  339. were just getting together

  340. and they were coming up with this story

  341. in and of themselves.

  342. But that's not the only claim

  343. that we see in the scripture.

  344. Jesus Christ himself in Luke chapter seven

  345. and Matthew chapter 10

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  346. says this about John the Baptist.

  347. Here's what he says in Luke seven.

  348. But what did you go out to see?

  349. That is in the wilderness.

  350. A prophet?

  351. And Jesus said,

  352. yes, I say to you,

  353. and one who is more than a prophet.

  354. Why?

  355. Because this is the one about whom is written,

  356. behold, I send my messenger ahead of you

  357. who will prepare your way before you.

  358. The fact that these prophecies

  359. were perfectly fulfilled by John the Baptist

  360. give validation to the fact

  361. that Jesus is indeed the Messiah,

  362. the Son of God.

  363. Because hundreds of years before,

  364. it said there will be a herald.

  365. This is what he will do.

  366. This is how he will do it.

  367. And he will go before preparing the way

  368. for the Messiah.

  369. And now we see John the Baptist

  370. perfectly fulfilling that.

  371. And so we say not only is John the Baptist

  372. the voice in the wilderness,

  373. but because of that,

  374. Jesus is indeed the Messiah,

  375. the Son of God.

  376. So we see what these Old Testament passages

  377. say about John.

  378. Now let's look at what these two

  379. Old Testament passages say about Jesus.

  380. The prophecies of Isaiah and Malachi

  381. are not only about John.

  382. They are indeed,

  383. first and foremost,

  384. about Christ.

  385. In fact,

  386. if you'll allow me

  387. just to take a side trip here

  388. for just a second,

  389. all of the Scripture

  390. is ultimately

  391. about Christ.

  392. The entire book in your hand,

  393. it doesn't matter where you turn

  394. in one way or another,

  395. it is there for the purpose

  396. of directing you

  397. towards the person

  398. of Jesus Christ.

  399. Jesus said this.

  400. And we see the example of this

  401. in the Gospels.

  402. Remember after Jesus' resurrection,

  403. a couple of the disciples

  404. were discouraged

  405. and they decided

  406. that they were going to go home

  407. to Emmaus.

  408. And they begin walking the road

  409. on Resurrection Day

  410. to the town of Emmaus.

  411. And Jesus shows up

  412. and walks with them.

  413. But he prevents them

  414. from recognizing that it's him.

  415. And what is it that Jesus did?

  416. Luke tells us in chapter 24.

  417. Then beginning with Moses,

  418. that's the law,

  419. the Pentateuch,

  420. the first five books

  421. of the Bible,

  422. and with all the prophets,

  423. that's the rest

  424. of the Old Testament,

  425. he explained to them

  426. the things concerning himself

  427. in all the Scriptures.

  428. What was Jesus explaining to them?

  429. The Bible is about me.

  430. Everything you read

  431. is meant to point you to me,

  432. Jesus was telling those men.

  433. But then Jesus makes the claim

  434. expressly in John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  435. He told some religious people

  436. who are having a hard time

  437. accepting him,

  438. he said,

  439. you search the Scriptures

  440. because you think that in them

  441. you have eternal life.

  442. And then he says,

  443. it is these that testify

  444. of me.

  445. And you are unwilling

  446. to come to me

  447. so that you may have life.

  448. In other words,

  449. he was meeting

  450. with a bunch of religious people

  451. that loved the Bible,

  452. that studied faithfully

  453. the Bible,

  454. but they couldn't understand

  455. that the Bible

  456. was actually about him.

  457. They went to the Scriptures

  458. searching for eternal life

  459. as if they could just

  460. follow the rules

  461. just the right way

  462. and if they could just

  463. conform to the religiosity

  464. just the right way

  465. that they would gain salvation.

  466. But Jesus says,

  467. you've missed the whole point.

  468. If you study

  469. and know every passage

  470. of the Bible

  471. but you've missed me

  472. in the Bible,

  473. then you've missed life

  474. in the Bible.

  475. All of the Scripture

  476. is about Jesus.

  477. So when we come

  478. to these two prophecies,

  479. it's not just indirectly

  480. about Jesus,

  481. it's actually specifically

  482. about Jesus.

  483. And it cannot be overlooked

  484. by us today.

  485. They're absolutely essential

  486. to our understanding

  487. of who Jesus is in nature.

  488. Now let's look at them again.

  489. Look at Malachi's prophecy first.

  490. Malachi chapter three.

  491. What is it that he says?

  492. Behold, this is God speaking

  493. through Malachi,

  494. I will send my messenger

  495. and he shall prepare the way

  496. before, what's that next word?

  497. Me.

  498. Who's speaking?

  499. God.

  500. This is not Malachi

  501. writing Malachi's word.

  502. This is Malachi speaking

  503. on behalf of God.

  504. And God says,

  505. behold, I will send

  506. my messenger before me.

  507. Look at the next phrase.

  508. And the Lord,

  509. God,

  510. Yahweh,

  511. whom you seek

  512. shall suddenly come

  513. to his temple.

  514. what's the purpose

  515. of this?

  516. What does this tell us

  517. about Jesus?

  518. The messenger

  519. to which God

  520. is referring

  521. is John the Baptist.

  522. But the person

  523. whose path

  524. John would be preparing

  525. is God

  526. himself.

  527. In other words,

  528. the Messiah

  529. would not be

  530. merely

  531. an extraordinarily

  532. gifted man

  533. that would lead

  534. the nation.

  535. No,

  536. this would be

  537. Yahweh himself

  538. in the flesh.

  539. Malachi's prophecy

  540. insists

  541. that the one

  542. to suddenly come

  543. would be

  544. none other

  545. than God

  546. himself.

  547. Now look with me

  548. at Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  549. We'll see it again.

  550. Isaiah chapter 40

    Isaiah 40:3

  551. verse 3.

  552. The voice

  553. of him

  554. that cries

  555. in the wilderness

  556. prepare ye

  557. the way

  558. of the

  559. who?

  560. Lord.

  561. Whose way

  562. is he preparing?

  563. The Lord's way.

  564. You notice

  565. in your Bible

  566. Lord has

  567. four capital letters.

  568. That's the covenant

  569. name.

  570. Yahweh.

  571. Whose way

  572. is the voice

  573. in the wilderness

  574. preparing?

  575. Yahweh's way.

  576. Make straight

  577. in the desert

  578. a highway

  579. for our God.

  580. And then he goes on.

  581. Every valley

  582. shall be exalted.

  583. Every mountain

  584. and hill

  585. shall be made low.

  586. The crooked

  587. shall be made straight

  588. and the rough places

  589. made plain.

  590. That is by John's

  591. preaching

  592. and John's ministry.

  593. And the glory

  594. of the Lord

  595. shall be revealed.

  596. And all flesh

  597. shall see it together

  598. for the mouth

  599. of the Lord

  600. hath spoken it.

  601. The voice

  602. said

  603. cry.

  604. And he said

  605. what shall I cry?

  606. All flesh

  607. is grass

  608. and all the

  609. goodliness thereof

  610. is of a flower

  611. of the field.

  612. The grass

  613. withers

  614. the flower

  615. fades

  616. but the spirit

  617. of the Lord

  618. bloweth upon it.

  619. Surely the people

  620. is grass.

  621. The grass

  622. withers

  623. the flower

  624. fades

  625. but the word

  626. of our God

  627. shall stand

  628. forever.

  629. What word?

  630. Isaiah's word

  631. Malachi's word

  632. John's word

  633. what were all

  634. three of them

  635. testifying of?

  636. That not only

  637. is Jesus

  638. the Messiah

  639. but the Messiah

  640. is God

  641. himself.

  642. Jesus was not

  643. just a man.

  644. He is God.

  645. He is the only

  646. one that could

  647. ever provide

  648. atonement for sin

  649. not because he

  650. was a superhuman

  651. but because he

  652. is God.

  653. So Mark says

  654. in verse number

  655. one

  656. my goal

  657. in this book

  658. is to proclaim

  659. and evidence

  660. that Jesus

  661. Christ

  662. is the Messiah

  663. and then he

  664. tacks on

  665. that next phrase

  666. and the Messiah

  667. is the Son

  668. of God

  669. and the very

  670. first thing

  671. Mark does

  672. is he says

  673. let's look

  674. at the scriptures.

  675. Here's what

  676. the scripture

  677. says.

  678. There's going

  679. to be a man

  680. that comes

  681. and the way

  682. that he prepares

  683. is a way

  684. for God

  685. himself

  686. and then

  687. John himself

  688. testifies

  689. of this God

  690. as he walks

  691. up to the river

  692. one day

  693. and he says

  694. behold

  695. the Lamb

  696. of God

  697. who takes away

  698. the sins

  699. of the world.

  700. What's the significance

  701. of John's ministry

  702. is because it points

  703. us to Jesus

  704. and what is significant

  705. about these Old Testament

  706. prophecies

  707. that we find out

  708. that long before

  709. we ever got

  710. to Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  711. chapter 2

  712. that the Old Testament

  713. said that the Messiah

  714. would come

  715. and the Messiah

  716. would be God

  717. in the flesh.

  718. Who is Jesus?

  719. He's God.

  720. He's God.

  721. How do we know?

  722. Because the Bible

  723. tells me so.

  724. Where does it say it?

  725. We can start

  726. in Isaiah 43.

  727. And Malachi 3.

  728. And then we can

  729. go to Mark 1.

  730. And then we can

  731. go to Philippians 2.

  732. And then we can

  733. go everywhere else

  734. in the scripture

  735. that you want to go

  736. because it all

  737. testifies of him.

  738. What's the significance

  739. of Mark writing

  740. about John?

  741. Nothing really

  742. except for the fact

  743. that he's writing

  744. about Jesus.

  745. Jesus made

  746. these divine

  747. claims himself

  748. as being one

  749. with the Father.

  750. But it was not

  751. a claim that was

  752. unsubstantiated

  753. in the rest

  754. of the scripture.

  755. These prophecies

  756. about John

  757. aren't really

  758. about John at all.

  759. The importance

  760. of recognizing

  761. that these prophecies

  762. referred to John

  763. cannot be overstated

  764. as they clearly reveal

  765. that Jesus of Nazareth

  766. is indeed

  767. God in the flesh

  768. that has come

  769. to save us

  770. from our sins.

  771. This is the gospel.

  772. This is the gospel.

  773. Listen this morning.

  774. This is who Jesus is.

  775. What are you going

  776. to do with him?

  777. What are you going

  778. to do with him?

  779. You cannot look

  780. at Jesus

  781. and do nothing.

  782. You cannot

  783. just accept Jesus

  784. as being this

  785. really awesome

  786. powerful preacher

  787. of days gone by.

  788. You cannot come

  789. to understand

  790. what the Bible

  791. says is the true

  792. nature and purpose

  793. of Jesus

  794. and walk away

  795. from that

  796. indifferently.

  797. You must either

  798. believe him

  799. and follow him

  800. as Lord

  801. or you must

  802. deny him

  803. and reject him

  804. and follow

  805. your own way.

  806. And anything

  807. indifferent

  808. is really just

  809. a choice

  810. to follow yourself.

  811. as you take

  812. the word

  813. to people

  814. in your family

  815. and you take

  816. it to people

  817. across this community

  818. and across

  819. this world

  820. we introduce

  821. them to who

  822. Jesus is

  823. but we cannot

  824. introduce him

  825. in a way

  826. that leaves

  827. them indifferent.

  828. If Jesus

  829. truly is the

  830. son of God

  831. as the Bible

  832. insists

  833. and attests

  834. to

  835. we must do

  836. something with him.

  837. We must either

  838. fully embrace him

  839. or we must

  840. fully reject him

  841. as a liar

  842. or a lunatic

  843. as C.S. Lewis

  844. said.

  845. He's either liar

  846. lunatic

  847. or Lord.

  848. You cannot walk

  849. out of this room

  850. today

  851. indifferent to that.

  852. You walk out

  853. of this room

  854. either acknowledging

  855. him as Lord

  856. or as a liar

  857. or a lunatic

  858. one or the other.
