  1. Well, the passage before us presents an early transition point in Mark's proclamation of Jesus's identity and purpose.

  2. This section really serves as a means of moving the story along, and what Mark is doing is summarizing this early stage of Jesus's life.

  3. Now, up to this point, Mark has introduced us to the early displays of power in Jesus's ministry, and he's also told us of the early reactions of the religious establishment to Jesus.

  4. Now, he is beginning to transition away from this early season of ministry to the more dominant portion of Christ's ministry in Galilee.

  5. The transition here, the reason we read both sections, is because it's really made up of two different events, two different scenes or episodes, whatever you'd want to call them.

  6. The first summarizes the nature of Jesus's meteoric rise in popularity, and it provides really a fitting close to this first section of the book.

  7. The second episode summarizes the calling of his twelve disciples, and it initiates the development of the next few chapters.

  8. So, in a literary sense, that's what's happening here in these verses.

  9. These sections, they're not difficult. They're not complicated. They're actually useful to our understanding.

  10. They further validate Jesus's claims of divinity.

  11. They show that Jesus had a purpose to achieve, as he calls his disciples and commissions them.

  12. They reveal the pressure that Jesus felt, how he relates to us as being human as well.

  13. And then they remind us of the true nature of discipleship and what it actually means to be a follower of Christ and not just a part of the crowd.

  14. And so, it's significant here. Let's take a moment to work through this first scene this morning.

  15. Look with me again at verse 7.

  16. But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea or to the lake.

  17. Now, this isn't the first time that Jesus has done this in the Gospel of Mark.

  18. You'll remember that in the first chapter, at the end, Jesus cleanses the leper.

  19. And because the leprous man disobeyed the Lord, he had to switch places with him.

  20. The leper was now in the city. He was fine. He was healed. He could be around all the people.

  21. But Jesus was then forced to minister for a season in desert places.

  22. That was the result of the pressure that was put on him because of the crowds and really the leprous man's disobedience.

  23. Then when we get to chapter 2, we see the healing of the paralytic.

  24. And after that, Jesus initiates a move to the lake.

  25. He himself decides that he's going to go out in order to accommodate the crowds.

  26. And then when we come to this part in chapter 3, it's really a mixture of both of those things.

  27. It's the plotting of the Pharisees from verse 6.

  28. That's where we left off last week. Look at it again.

  29. And the Pharisees went forth and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

  30. So Jesus is in the city, maybe Capernaum.

  31. And he's in Capernaum. He's teaching in the synagogue.

  32. And now the Pharisees are ticked off again.

  33. And they go and they consult with their political enemies to see if they can find a way to, quote-unquote, legally murder Jesus.

  34. And so Jesus, sensing that, is moving out of the city a little bit.

  35. He's getting away from the Pharisees to an extent.

  36. That's happening here.

  37. But there's also this fact of these growing crowds that are initiating Jesus' move.

  38. He is initiating that more than he's running from any type of opposition.

  39. And we're immediately reminded again of the unstoppable nature of Jesus' purpose.

  40. No matter what confronted him, no matter what circumstances he found himself in,

  41. Jesus was committed to faithfully fulfilling his task, his ministry.

  42. He was faithfully seeking to preach the gospel.

  43. He wanted to heal the people.

  44. He was on his way to the cross, so to speak, but he had a purpose in the meantime as he is marching his way there.

  45. And there was no circumstance.

  46. There was no outside pressure.

  47. There was no opposition that was going to prevent him from doing that.

  48. And there's a tremendous lesson for us in this.

  49. We cannot allow the fear of opposition to prevent us from doing what is right.

  50. Look, it's pretty clear that being a Christian is not going to get easier.

  51. It's not.

  52. In these next few years, it's actually probably going to get much more difficult.

  53. And what I mean by that is this cultural Christianity is going to die.

  54. It's going to die soon.

  55. You know what I mean by that?

  56. The cultural Christianity that says that Christianity is a part of my life, that's what I am, but they really don't know Christ, and they're really not following Christ.

  57. Pop into church maybe from here or there.

  58. Maybe they associate with a particular group, but it's just a cultural label.

  59. I'm an American, therefore I'm probably a Christian, at least in the southern United States.

  60. That's what it is, right?

  61. There is a cultural Christianity.

  62. That's going to die soon.

  63. It's going to die soon.

  64. It has to, because there is opposition coming from outside forces, outside of the church, that are going to make it more and more difficult to be a Christian, to at least claim to be a Christian.

  65. You know what's going to happen when we hit that opposition?

  66. Do we cower?

  67. Do we decide to stop taking a stand on what the Bible teaches?

  68. Well, the example of Jesus was that there was no fear of opposition that prevented him from doing what was right, and it shouldn't prevent us either.

  69. At the same time, we can't be so rigid in our preferences that we stop moving forward in the work that God has called us to do.

  70. Well, Jesus' ongoing ministry, by the lake, grew exponentially here, and an environment of chaos very quickly ensued.

  71. Jesus was always willing to show compassion to the people that followed him, but crowds are not presented favorably in the Gospels.

  72. Have you noticed that as you read your Bible, and you read through Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and John, very seldomly are crowds presented in a favorable light?

  73. More often than not, crowds are associated with error.

  74. They're associated with danger, misunderstanding, greed, and so on.

  75. The true followers of Jesus often came out of these crowds, but very few people in the crowds actually became true followers of Jesus.

  76. And so as we study these crowds, we see we might would be enamored by their success and not necessarily even surprised by the numerical growth of what was happening around Jesus,

  77. but the Scripture very seldomly actually presents these crowds favorably.

  78. What we see in these verses is the crowd actually descending into chaos, and the overall tone of this passage is very negative.

  79. It's not positive.

  80. So let's look at it.

  81. I've just come up with just a handful of notes as we work through these verses, just simple phrases that we can hang our thoughts on this morning if you want to do that and write these down.

  82. The first thing I wrote down is huge crowds.

  83. Huge crowds.

  84. Look again at verse 7.

  85. And a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judea, and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and from beyond Jordan.

  86. And they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.

  87. Now at this point in Jesus' ministry, his popularity had absolutely exploded.

  88. Thousands upon thousands of people are traveling.

  89. Some of them are traveling over 100 miles on foot to get to where Jesus is.

  90. This is really quite remarkable when you think about it.

  91. This isn't 2021.

  92. This is first century Israel, Palestine.

  93. Information didn't travel in those days like it travels now.

  94. There was nobody at one of Jesus' healings when he was healing the paralytic.

  95. There was nobody there with their iPhone.

  96. Live stream into Facebook so that all their friends in Idumea and Tyre and Sidon could see what was happening.

  97. None of that is happening here.

  98. There's no newspapers.

  99. There's nothing like that.

  100. Word traveled by mouth.

  101. And there was word that was beginning to travel.

  102. But it meant somebody had to leave their home in Galilee to go somewhere else to talk about it.

  103. And of course, by natural processes of trade and business, that begins to happen.

  104. But it didn't take very long and Jesus' ministry began to explode.

  105. All of these people are coming.

  106. Do you see from all the different places?

  107. Of course, they're coming from all around Galilee.

  108. They're coming from Judea.

  109. They're coming from Jerusalem.

  110. We expect those places, right?

  111. But then they also come from Idumea.

  112. That's a section south of Judea.

  113. Probably 120, 140 miles they had to go to get to Galilee where Jesus was.

  114. And that was in the south.

  115. And then there were people coming from the east.

  116. The Transjordan area over the Jordan.

  117. There were people coming from over there.

  118. There were people coming from the north.

  119. Tyre and Sidon.

  120. Nobody's coming from the west.

  121. That's the Mediterranean Sea.

  122. Nobody could come from there.

  123. But they were coming from the north and the east and the south.

  124. Some have estimated that tens of thousands of people were coming to Jesus

  125. at one time.

  126. Just this overflow of people coming to Jesus in Galilee.

  127. And if you pick up on those regions, it's not just Jews.

  128. It's Jews coming from Galilee and Judea and maybe the Transjordan area.

  129. But the Transjordan area was also a mixed group.

  130. Tyre and Sidon was almost exclusively Gentile.

  131. So there are people from all over the place.

  132. All kinds of diversity.

  133. All kinds of numbers coming to Jesus at this point.

  134. Well, why is it that Mark is so intent on emphasizing the size and diversity of these crowds?

  135. In addition to giving just a realistic depiction of Jesus' ministry,

  136. it actually adds credibility and validation to what Jesus was doing.

  137. Think about this.

  138. Why were these people coming to Jesus?

  139. Because they heard what he could do.

  140. And the credibility of those stories was so strong

  141. that people are coming from all over the place to see it themselves.

  142. And you'll never find one time in the New Testament

  143. anyone who denied the reality of these healings.

  144. No one.

  145. Not even his enemies.

  146. The Pharisees knew exactly what he was capable of.

  147. Remember the last scene that we studied last week.

  148. They brought this man with a withered hand

  149. because they knew Jesus would heal him

  150. and they just wanted to trap him for doing it on the Sabbath.

  151. They knew who he was.

  152. They knew his power.

  153. They didn't deny it.

  154. They just attributed it to Satan instead of God

  155. as we'll get to in just a couple of weeks.

  156. No one denied his power.

  157. Remember, these crowds coming together give validity.

  158. These are eyewitnesses that are not just 12 men

  159. who followed him loosely and came up with this plan,

  160. this elaborate plan to deceive the world for 2,000 years.

  161. These are thousands of people that are coming and witnessing this

  162. and then they're going elsewhere to tell everybody else about it as well.

  163. And so the news of Jesus begins to spread.

  164. That's why Mark is writing about this.

  165. It's not just a narrative.

  166. It's credibility because what is Mark's purpose in writing this gospel?

  167. to proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah.

  168. And this was proof that that is indeed the case.

  169. Now the point immediately forces us to make a decision about Jesus.

  170. If thousands of people, including Jesus' enemies,

  171. acknowledged his power,

  172. who are we to deny it?

  173. It's interesting, isn't it?

  174. When Jesus was living,

  175. when everybody was around him,

  176. nobody questioned the credibility or the validity of what he was doing.

  177. No, that came hundreds of years later with people that weren't there,

  178. that weren't around.

  179. And they just decided that,

  180. well, there's no way that that could ever possibly happen

  181. because, you know, science.

  182. And since science doesn't agree with it,

  183. then there's no way that this could actually happen.

  184. But there are thousands of eyewitnesses that say otherwise.

  185. You're forced to make a decision about Christ at this point in this passage.

  186. Because if this is real,

  187. if this is really who Jesus is,

  188. then we are held accountable to his message.

  189. And his message was,

  190. the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  191. And he was a reference to himself.

  192. I am here.

  193. I am the Son of God.

  194. I am the Messiah.

  195. Repent and believe the good news.

  196. And for those of us that deny that,

  197. we do not receive what he then offers,

  198. which is the forgiveness and mercy and grace and eternal life.

  199. So you must make your decision.

  200. Is Jesus really who he said he was?

  201. Was this an elaborate conspiracy

  202. that involved multiple nations

  203. and thousands of people

  204. that conspired to fool us today?

  205. I don't think so.

  206. Huge crowds.

  207. Number two, imminent danger.

  208. Imminent danger.

  209. Look with me at verse nine.

  210. And Jesus spoke to his disciples

  211. and he told them to get a small ship

  212. that it should wait on him

  213. because of the multitude,

  214. lest they should throng him.

  215. Now the actions of the hordes of people

  216. posed a physical threat to Jesus and his disciples.

  217. This is not Jesus adding an aid

  218. to his preaching ministry.

  219. The boat wasn't a tool in this story.

  220. This was an escape plan.

  221. This wasn't Jesus hoping that people will hear him.

  222. This is Jesus having his disciples

  223. ready to hit the road

  224. in case things go south real quick.

  225. How do we know that?

  226. Well, the verse tells us.

  227. He spoke to his disciples

  228. that a small ship should wait on him

  229. because of the multitude,

  230. lest they should throng him.

  231. The word translated as throng here,

  232. it may be something different

  233. in your scripture journals,

  234. indicates violence.

  235. It means to crush or to press.

  236. In that context of first century Israel,

  237. it would be to press like grapes

  238. in a wine press.

  239. Jesus is saying,

  240. get a boat ready

  241. just in case the crowd presses me,

  242. crushes me,

  243. presses me like grapes.

  244. This is violence.

  245. This is a violent crowd.

  246. It gives me the picture of the news stories

  247. that we see every Black Friday

  248. and after Thanksgiving, right?

  249. We see it all the time.

  250. That's what's happening with Jesus.

  251. These people are gathering.

  252. You get the picture that in the process of this,

  253. people are fighting.

  254. They're fighting one another

  255. to get to where Jesus is.

  256. They're trying to get,

  257. they're trying to touch him

  258. and it becomes chaotic.

  259. And in their attempts to get to Jesus,

  260. they actually became a threat to him.

  261. Now, before we move on,

  262. there's something striking to me

  263. about the way that Jesus prepared

  264. for this potential escape.

  265. Jesus could have done anything

  266. to get away from these people.

  267. He could have literally,

  268. in his power as God,

  269. immediately transported himself

  270. and his disciples

  271. to a completely different place

  272. and be gone.

  273. He could have done that.

  274. He did it in other passages.

  275. You remember in John chapter six,

  276. Jesus was walking on water

  277. and the disciples didn't recognize him at first

  278. and they finally recognize him

  279. and he gets in the boat

  280. and it says they had been,

  281. they'd been rowing all night,

  282. contrary to the wind.

  283. They were fighting to get

  284. to the other side of the shore

  285. and they couldn't make any progress.

  286. They're stuck out in the middle of the sea.

  287. Jesus gets in the boat

  288. and it says immediately

  289. they were at the shore.

  290. He gets in the boat

  291. and the disciples look up

  292. and hey, we're not in the sea anymore.

  293. We're where we wanted to go.

  294. Okay, Jesus has that power.

  295. He could have done that.

  296. There was another time in,

  297. I believe it was Nazareth actually,

  298. where Jesus was being mobbed by a crowd

  299. and it says that he passed through the crowd

  300. and they did not perceive that he was there.

  301. This was another miracle moment

  302. where Jesus is moving through.

  303. But Jesus didn't do that here.

  304. He didn't do that here.

  305. And it strikes me as kind of unusual.

  306. Why wouldn't he do that here?

  307. It was the ordinary means of a boat

  308. that he used

  309. instead of displaying his supernatural power.

  310. Here's the point.

  311. Oftentimes in our prayers,

  312. we can be guilty

  313. of requesting a supernatural act from God

  314. when his plan is really to bless us

  315. with the ordinary means of grace instead.

  316. We get behind in our bills maybe

  317. and we're just trying to figure out

  318. how we're gonna pay it off

  319. and it drives us to prayer, right?

  320. And we get down to what is it that we pray?

  321. If you're like me,

  322. it's a selfish prayer.

  323. Lord, if you would please

  324. just let me go to the mailbox today

  325. and there just be,

  326. the stimulus check has arrived, Lord.

  327. Would you, whatever it is.

  328. We pray.

  329. You know what?

  330. Sometimes it's not that God

  331. is seeking to supernaturally

  332. drop money from the sky for us.

  333. It may be the ordinary means of a budget.

  334. It could just be the ordinary means

  335. of giving you a few extra hours at work

  336. or whatever it may be.

  337. It's the ordinary means of grace

  338. that God brings about.

  339. It works in other situations in life as well.

  340. We think about,

  341. we pray for health,

  342. particularly when people we know

  343. are sick and they're struggling,

  344. maybe even knocking at death's door.

  345. We know that God sometimes works in our bodies

  346. to provide healing

  347. that doctors can't explain and comprehend.

  348. We know that's the work of the Lord.

  349. Oftentimes that's what we pray for.

  350. And it's right for us to acknowledge

  351. that God can do that.

  352. Sometimes he does

  353. and it's not wrong for us to pray

  354. for divine intervention.

  355. It's not a wrong thing to do.

  356. However, God usually employs

  357. the ordinary means of technology

  358. and the education of doctors

  359. and medicine

  360. in order to meet those needs.

  361. We have a tendency to think

  362. that God is only at work

  363. in the sensational things.

  364. And it affects our prayer.

  365. It affects the way that we talk about him.

  366. In the way that we praise him.

  367. And my point is that God's work

  368. is not limited to what we perceive

  369. as supernatural.

  370. He often works in ways

  371. that seem completely ordinary.

  372. Now, our faith

  373. believes in God's ability to do anything.

  374. And that's right.

  375. And it's good.

  376. Our gratitude should reflect

  377. that he is sovereign over everything.

  378. Yes, God can provide supernaturally,

  379. abundantly,

  380. in ways that you would have never expected.

  381. But he provides for you every day

  382. in ordinary ways

  383. that we completely disregard

  384. and never actually show gratitude for.

  385. You say,

  386. well, I got this job that I have right now

  387. because I filled out an application

  388. and I interviewed well.

  389. Well, yeah, that's true.

  390. But that was the ordinary means of grace

  391. that God used

  392. to provide you with a job

  393. that he wanted to bless you with

  394. to fulfill his purpose.

  395. He wasn't absent from that.

  396. God is intricately involved in your life.

  397. Intricately involved.

  398. There is nothing in your life

  399. that his hand is not touching.

  400. And sometimes, most of the time,

  401. it's completely ordinary.

  402. So yes,

  403. pray for the supernatural.

  404. Pray for God's moving

  405. in a unique way,

  406. but recognize

  407. that there's not one moment

  408. in your life

  409. that he's not moving.

  410. There's not one thing

  411. that happens to you

  412. that he hasn't involved himself with.

  413. Jesus and his disciples

  414. were in imminent danger,

  415. but Jesus sets an example

  416. of preparedness

  417. through the ordinary means of grace.

  418. Well, let's move on.

  419. Number three,

  420. greedy hearts.

  421. Greedy hearts.

  422. We've seen huge crowds.

  423. We've seen imminent danger.

  424. Now we see greedy hearts

  425. in verse 10.

  426. For he had healed many

  427. insomuch that they pressed upon him

  428. for to touch him

  429. as many as had plagues.

  430. Verse 10 tells us

  431. why the people came to Galilee.

  432. They were hoping for healing

  433. from their diseases.

  434. And certainly,

  435. able people were there

  436. for other reasons,

  437. but the emphasis of the text here

  438. is on those who were diseased.

  439. Now, there's no problem

  440. in them seeking healing.

  441. That's not the problem here.

  442. We pray for healing all the time.

  443. God never condemns us

  444. for coming to him

  445. in order to have him meet

  446. our physical needs.

  447. Jesus actually looked compassionately

  448. at these people.

  449. We've seen this over and over

  450. just in the first two and a half chapters

  451. of this book.

  452. He looks compassionately.

  453. He never denied them

  454. the healing that they sought.

  455. In fact, his love

  456. is so great for us

  457. that he healed many people

  458. that would not follow him.

  459. He healed many people

  460. that would deny him.

  461. Perhaps some people

  462. that were a part of the crowd

  463. that yelled,

  464. crucify him.

  465. Even in his arrest,

  466. Peter pulls out his knife

  467. and he cuts off Malchus' ear.

  468. This man has literally

  469. come to arrest Jesus

  470. to go and have him crucified.

  471. And what does Jesus do?

  472. Knowing the rejection of his heart,

  473. he picks up his ear

  474. and he puts it back

  475. on the side of his head.

  476. There is a compassion

  477. and a love

  478. in Jesus

  479. and in his actions

  480. that we can't even comprehend.

  481. And we've quoted

  482. Dane Orland in this way,

  483. but it's worth doing it again.

  484. Jesus did not simply operate

  485. in deeds of compassion,

  486. but actually felt

  487. the inner turmoils

  488. and roiling emotions

  489. of pity

  490. toward the unfortunate.

  491. When Jesus healed people

  492. in these crowds,

  493. it wasn't because

  494. he felt an obligation

  495. to do so.

  496. It's because he had

  497. genuine compassion for them.

  498. He loved them.

  499. He wanted to make a difference

  500. in their lives.

  501. He hated

  502. to see what life

  503. in a fallen world

  504. had done.

  505. And he wanted

  506. to set that right.

  507. So the problem

  508. is not that they came

  509. to him for healing.

  510. That's not the problem.

  511. The problem is that

  512. their greedy hearts

  513. only cared

  514. about what they could

  515. get from Jesus.

  516. None of them stopped

  517. for just a moment

  518. just to consider

  519. what he was trying to do.

  520. He didn't come to heal.

  521. He came to preach

  522. the gospel.

  523. But nobody wanted

  524. to listen to his message.

  525. There's no indication

  526. anywhere in these verses

  527. that Jesus even had

  528. an opportunity

  529. to actually preach

  530. the truth to these people

  531. because the way

  532. they were pressing

  533. against him.

  534. They're clamoring

  535. over each other.

  536. They're putting other people

  537. in danger in order

  538. that they could get

  539. to Jesus

  540. to have him meet there.

  541. And he didn't care

  542. about anybody else.

  543. There's greed in this.

  544. Violent greed.

  545. Jesus noted

  546. a similar situation

  547. after he fed

  548. the 5,000

  549. in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  550. Do you remember

  551. that story?

  552. You can write down

  553. the passage.

  554. You can flip there

  555. if you want.

  556. John chapter 6

    John 6:25–30

  557. verses 25 to 30.

  558. Jesus has just

  559. fed the 5,000

  560. and he and his disciples

  561. went across the lake

  562. and they made their way

  563. around

  564. and they followed him

  565. around.

  566. And here's what he said.

  567. When they found him

  568. on the other side

  569. of the sea

  570. they said to him

  571. Rabbi

  572. when did you come here?

  573. And Jesus answered them

  574. truly, truly

  575. I say to you

  576. you are seeking me

  577. not because you saw signs

  578. not because you are

  579. trying to figure out

  580. who I am

  581. and understand my message

  582. but because you ate

  583. your fill of the loaves.

  584. They were prosperity seekers.

  585. And then he tells them

  586. do not work

  587. for the food

  588. that perishes

  589. but for the food

  590. that endures

  591. to eternal life

  592. which the son of man

  593. will give to you.

  594. He's referencing himself.

  595. For on him

  596. God the Father

  597. has set his seal.

  598. And then they said this

  599. What must we do

  600. to be doing

  601. the works of God?

  602. And Jesus answered them

  603. This is the work of God

  604. that you believe in him

  605. who he has sent.

  606. So they said

  607. Then what sign do you do

  608. that we may see

  609. and believe you?

  610. What work do you perform?

  611. He just took

  612. five pieces of bread

  613. and a few fish

  614. and fed 5,000 people

  615. and these same people

  616. are now looking at Jesus

  617. and saying

  618. Okay, okay

  619. prove it.

  620. What?

  621. They didn't actually care

  622. about who Jesus was

  623. they just wanted

  624. more from him.

  625. Give us more food.

  626. They were prosperity seekers.

  627. They came to church

  628. because they wanted

  629. to see if Jesus

  630. would give them something

  631. that he would reward them

  632. for going to church.

  633. If he would reward them

  634. for putting money

  635. in the offering.

  636. If he would reward them

  637. for doing their religious duties.

  638. They were prosperity seekers.

  639. That's what they were looking for.

  640. That's the crowd

  641. in Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  642. They're greedy.

  643. They're just looking

  644. to get something from him.

  645. And while Jesus

  646. cared deeply

  647. about their needs

  648. his chief objective

  649. was to preach the gospel.

  650. His compassionate heart

  651. wanted what was best

  652. for these people

  653. but he knew

  654. what was actually best

  655. for them

  656. was the message

  657. of forgiveness

  658. that only he could provide.

  659. And his miracles

  660. though genuinely performed

  661. performed were meant

  662. to point people

  663. to his identity.

  664. If they had just

  665. listened to his message

  666. they would have realized

  667. that he was offering

  668. eternal healing

  669. that far surpassed

  670. the temporary pleasures

  671. that they were seeking

  672. from him then.

  673. The irony is

  674. that they clamored

  675. for the one

  676. that could heal

  677. their souls

  678. but all they wanted

  679. was for him

  680. to heal their bodies.

  681. Do you realize

  682. you are

  683. a soul?

  684. You have

  685. a body.

  686. Your soul

  687. will live forever.

  688. Your body

  689. will not.

  690. You could go

  691. through your whole life

  692. live perfectly healthy

  693. never get any

  694. major diseases

  695. stay in shape

  696. eat right

  697. and your body

  698. is still going to die.

  699. You are going to die.

  700. These people

  701. were clamoring

  702. to Jesus

  703. and he was offering

  704. life eternal

  705. for them

  706. and all they wanted

  707. was for him

  708. to take care

  709. of something

  710. that was going

  711. to die anyways.

  712. And how many people

  713. they flood to churches

  714. or they flood to religion

  715. or they flood to whatever

  716. it is that they're looking for

  717. and they flood to it

  718. they're looking for

  719. life now to be better

  720. but this life

  721. it's not going to last.

  722. And Jesus is sitting here

  723. he said I'll give you

  724. something that's far greater.

  725. Give you something

  726. far greater than life

  727. right now.

  728. Far greater than health

  729. right now.

  730. Far greater than peace

  731. right now.

  732. Far greater than riches

  733. right now.

  734. I will give you

  735. eternal life

  736. in heaven

  737. with me.

  738. But all they wanted

  739. was healing

  740. for their body.

  741. Number four

  742. evil opposition.

  743. We've seen huge crowds

  744. imminent danger

  745. greedy hearts

  746. and then finally

  747. evil opposition.

  748. Look with me

  749. at verse 11.

  750. And unclean spirits

  751. when they saw him

  752. fell down before him

  753. and cried saying

  754. thou art the son of God

  755. and he straightly charged them

  756. that they should not

  757. make him known.

  758. That seems weird

  759. right?

  760. Now once again

  761. Mark is bringing together

  762. demon possession

  763. and diseases

  764. all at one time.

  765. Now he's not doing that

  766. to suggest that disease

  767. is a result of

  768. demonic oppression

  769. or possession.

  770. That's not the point.

  771. What he's doing

  772. is he's bringing together

  773. the fact of

  774. life in a fallen world

  775. having both physical

  776. and spiritual realities

  777. to it.

  778. And that Jesus

  779. has authority

  780. over both the physical

  781. and the spiritual.

  782. That's the point

  783. in bringing these two

  784. things together.

  785. The interactions

  786. between Jesus

  787. and the demons

  788. are recorded often

  789. in the gospels.

  790. And the demons

  791. every time

  792. except for perhaps

  793. Satan

  794. and the temptations

  795. in the wilderness

  796. we don't see

  797. the same thing happening

  798. but every single time

  799. demons are confronted

  800. by Jesus

  801. they react fearfully

  802. to his presence.

  803. They react fearfully

  804. because they know

  805. exactly who he is.

  806. James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  807. tells us this.

  808. James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  809. in verse 19

  810. you believe that God

  811. is one

  812. you do well

  813. but then James

  814. basically says

  815. so what?

  816. Even the demons

  817. believe that

  818. and they shudder

  819. they tremble

  820. they shake before him

  821. that's their disposition.

  822. It's one thing

  823. to acknowledge

  824. that God

  825. that Jesus is God

  826. it's another thing

  827. to follow him

  828. as Lord

  829. the demons

  830. were not willing

  831. to do that

  832. and so they feared

  833. before him

  834. because they knew

  835. his authority

  836. and they knew

  837. his power.

  838. Now

  839. fallen angels

  840. like this

  841. they do not

  842. usually desire

  843. to be known

  844. as such.

  845. There are instances

  846. in the scripture

  847. clearly most of the time

  848. around Jesus

  849. where they afflict

  850. people physically

  851. but their work

  852. is often in the realm

  853. of false religion

  854. and government.

  855. We see that all

  856. through the scripture.

  857. It's subtle

  858. and no matter

  859. how much they preferred

  860. to remain concealed

  861. they could not help

  862. but outwardly respond

  863. when confronted

  864. by Jesus.

  865. We often hear

  866. about this

  867. crying out

  868. that they would do

  869. they would cry out

  870. thou art the son

  871. of God

  872. identifying who he is

  873. but he always

  874. every time

  875. commands their silence.

  876. It's not because

  877. Jesus didn't want

  878. people to know

  879. who he was

  880. that was the whole

  881. point of all the stuff.

  882. He's healing people

  883. so that they would

  884. see who he was.

  885. He's teaching

  886. so that they will

  887. hear who he is.

  888. He plainly said

  889. on multiple occasions

  890. I and the father

  891. are one.

  892. He wasn't trying

  893. to hide his identity.

  894. What he was doing

  895. is he was proving

  896. his identity

  897. proving his power

  898. by showing his authority

  899. even over the spirit world.

  900. The demons

  901. his silencing

  902. his aminas

  903. of revealing

  904. who he is

  905. and he demonstrates

  906. his power over them

  907. but it's also true

  908. that Jesus

  909. is not interested

  910. in his ministry

  911. being connected

  912. with that which is evil.

  913. And that just makes sense.

  914. We see this often.

  915. You can go to Acts 16

  916. and see another description

  917. of this with Paul.

  918. We won't do that now

  919. but in the same sense

  920. we are in no way

  921. interested

  922. in Christianity

  923. associating

  924. with false religions

  925. like Mormonism

  926. and Jehovah's Witnesses

  927. and Christian science

  928. Roman Catholicism

  929. to unite with such groups

  930. is to deny

  931. the gospel of Jesus

  932. and to perpetuate error.

  933. Paul when he was

  934. confronting the Corinthians

  935. about their involvement

  936. in some of the pagan temples

  937. and when they ate there

  938. and the idols

  939. that were involved

  940. he said

  941. he encouraged

  942. and exhorted

  943. against that

  944. because

  945. what is behind

  946. those idols

  947. what is behind

  948. those religions

  949. he said

  950. are demons

  951. demonic forces.

  952. we see in the Old Testament

  953. we see the fights

  954. between

  955. the right

  956. and the wrong

  957. the representatives

  958. of God

  959. and the representatives

  960. of Satan

  961. in the form of

  962. government.

  963. That's how they work

  964. mostly.

  965. Well we're not

  966. interested in Christianity

  967. associating with

  968. the natural world

  969. we're set apart.

  970. Well

  971. let's close here.

  972. would you consider

  973. as we close

  974. the intense pressure

  975. under which

  976. Jesus lived

  977. we consider

  978. this whole passage

  979. here

  980. thousands of people

  981. pressing against

  982. him

  983. demanding

  984. of him

  985. ignoring

  986. what he has

  987. to say

  988. misrepresenting

  989. who he is

  990. unclean spirits

  991. and all of this

  992. on the heels

  993. of a group

  994. of

  995. religious

  996. and political

  997. men

  998. seeking to

  999. put him to death.

  1000. There's quite a bit

  1001. of pressure

1002. in a life like that.

  1003. Sometimes our focus

  1004. is so much

  1005. on the deity

  1006. of Christ

  1007. and rightly so

  1008. that we

  1009. forget

  1010. his humanity.

  1011. Jesus

  1012. overcame

  1013. every human

  1014. struggle

  1015. that was

  1016. because of

  1017. his deity

  1018. but he also

  1019. felt the

  1020. pressure of

  1021. human life

  1022. to the

  1023. fullest

  1024. extent.

  1025. There was

  1026. mounting

  1027. hostility

  1028. from religious

  1029. and political

  1030. groups that

  1031. culminated in

  1032. plots for

  1033. his murder.

  1034. He knew

  1035. well

  1036. the scrutiny

  1037. of critical

  1038. eyes

  1039. and faced

  1040. people constantly

  1041. that did

  1042. nothing but

  1043. express what

  1044. they thought

  1045. was wrong

  1046. with him

  1047. he felt

  1048. the unending

  1049. demands of

  1050. people that

  1051. clamored for

  1052. his attention.

  1053. He knew

  1054. the heartache

  1055. of friends

  1056. and family

  1057. forsaking

  1058. him.

  1059. He felt

  1060. the pain

  1061. of demonic

  1062. opposition

  1063. and its

  1064. hold on the

  1065. people that

  1066. he loved.

  1067. Kent Hughes

  1068. said the

  1069. pressure upon

  1070. Christ was

  1071. immense.

  1072. Our Lord's

  1073. every move

  1074. night and

  1075. day

  1076. was observed

  1077. by hostile

  1078. interlopers.

  1079. The worst

  1080. interpretation

  1081. was placed

  1082. on everything

  1083. that they

  1084. saw and

  1085. heard.

  1086. Our Lord

  1087. being truly

  1088. a man

  1089. felt the

  1090. pain of

  1091. hatred

  1092. intensely

  1093. with its

  1094. emotional

  1095. discomfort

  1096. and pervasive

  1097. alienation.

  1098. Have you ever

  1099. felt that way?

  1100. have you ever

  1101. been in a

  1102. place in

  1103. your life

  1104. where it

  1105. just seems

  1106. like everybody

  1107. around you

  1108. is trying to

  1109. find everything

  1110. that's wrong

  1111. with you

  1112. and they

  1113. don't mind

  1114. letting you

  1115. know?

  1116. The point

  1117. is that Jesus

  1118. knew by

  1119. experience

  1120. everything that

  1121. we go

  1122. through.

  1123. Not in

  1124. theory but

  1125. because he

  1126. went through

  1127. it too.

  1128. Have you

  1129. been forsaken?

  1130. He knows.

  1131. have people

  1132. lied about

  1133. you?

  1134. He knows

  1135. what that's

  1136. like.

  1137. Have you

  1138. been misunderstood?

  1139. He knows

  1140. that too.

  1141. Have you

  1142. been hurt?

  1143. He knows.

  1144. Have you

  1145. been broke?

  1146. He knows.

  1147. Have you

  1148. been tempted?

  1149. He knows.

  1150. Hebrews 4

  1151. tells us

  1152. that we

  1153. don't have

  1154. a high

  1155. priest who

  1156. is unable

  1157. to sympathize

  1158. with our

  1159. weaknesses

  1160. but one

  1161. who in

  1162. every respect

  1163. remember that

  1164. phrase

  1165. in every

  1166. respect

  1167. has been

  1168. tempted as

  1169. we are

  1170. yet

  1171. without

  1172. sin.

  1173. And then

  1174. he says

  1175. let us

  1176. then come

  1177. boldly with

  1178. confidence

  1179. drawing near

  1180. to the

  1181. throne of

  1182. grace

  1183. that we

  1184. may receive

  1185. mercy

  1186. and find

  1187. grace to

  1188. help in

  1189. time of

  1190. need.

  1191. Do you

  1192. see the

  1193. gospel taking

  1194. shape in

  1195. that?

  1196. Jesus

  1197. willingly

  1198. and purposefully

  1199. subjected

  1200. himself to

  1201. all of

  1202. this.

  1203. Why?

  1204. so that

  1205. we can

  1206. come with

  1207. confidence

  1208. to his

  1209. throne

  1210. to find

  1211. mercy

  1212. and grace.

  1213. That's

  1214. the heart

  1215. of Christ.

  1216. when we

  1217. come to

  1218. him in

  1219. our

  1220. troubles

  1221. when we

  1222. come to

  1223. him with

  1224. our

  1225. sin

  1226. when we

  1227. come to

  1228. him with

  1229. all the

  1230. things that

  1231. we're

  1232. struggling

  1233. with in

  1234. life

  1235. he doesn't

  1236. look on

  1237. us with

  1238. just an

  1239. unassociated

  1240. pity.

  1241. No he

  1242. looks

  1243. compassionately

  1244. he feels

  1245. that because

  1246. he has

  1247. been there

  1248. he knows

  1249. exactly how

  1250. you feel

  1251. and because

  1252. he did it

  1253. all without

  1254. sinning we

  1255. can come

  1256. boldly to

  1257. him knowing

  1258. that when

  1259. we go

  1260. there we

  1261. get mercy

  1262. and we

  1263. get grace

  1264. from him.

  1265. Why would

  1266. you go to

  1267. anything else?

  1268. Nothing else

  1269. can provide

  1270. that.

  1271. No

  1272. relationship

  1273. can provide

  1274. that.

  1275. No family

  1276. can provide

  1277. that.

  1278. No job

  1279. no success

  1280. there is

  1281. nothing in

  1282. this life

  1283. that can

  1284. provide for

  1285. you the

  1286. compassion

  1287. and the

  1288. love and

  1289. the mercy

  1290. that Jesus

  1291. extends to

  1292. everyone who

  1293. comes to

  1294. him.

  1295. And he

  1296. ultimately

  1297. felt our

  1298. needs to

  1299. the fullest

  1300. extent in

  1301. his death.

  1302. What is

  1303. our greatest

  1304. struggle?

  1305. Impending

  1306. death.

  1307. It's

  1308. coming.

  1309. Jesus

  1310. knew

  1311. death.

  1312. But because

  1313. of his

  1314. resurrection

  1315. he offers

  1316. us life.

  1317. He conquered

  1318. sin and

  1319. death in

  1320. order to

  1321. provide for

  1322. us what we

  1323. cannot provide

  1324. for ourselves.

  1325. love.

  1326. That is the

  1327. love of

  1328. Christ.

  1329. Why did

  1330. he subject

  1331. himself to

  1332. all of

  1333. this?

  1334. Love.

  1335. Love.

  1336. The question

  1337. for us then

  1338. is will we

  1339. receive it?
