  1. Every four years, except for 2020, since 1896, nations from around the world have gathered together in one place or another for the Olympic Games.

  2. And as you know, every country has its own Olympic committee that goes to great lengths to ensure that its very best athletes are chosen to represent the nation.

  3. And for nearly 100 years of that time, participation in the Olympic Games was limited to collegiate or domestic league amateurs.

  4. In other words, professionals weren't allowed to participate.

  5. So these Olympic committees would have to study those who were performing or competing collegiately or in certain local leagues throughout their nations to find someone that could represent them.

  6. But in 1992, as some of you will remember, the International Basketball Federation allowed professional players to participate in the Summer Olympics for the very first time.

  7. And it was a team from the United States that consisted of a group of men that many have considered to be the greatest sports team to ever be put together, ever.

  8. It was replete with superstars like Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson and Larry Bird and Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing.

  9. And we could go on and on and on.

  10. And maybe the one that we would say really shouldn't have belonged on the team was Christian Laettner.

  11. But they needed one collegiate player and Duke was the only place that had someone available.

  12. And so Christian Laettner joined the team as well over Shaquille O'Neal, actually.

  13. What was amazing about this team is that they were absolutely unbeatable.

  14. They defeated every opponent on average by 44 points a game.

  15. Not that they scored 44 points, but they beat everyone by 44 points a game.

  16. And actually, 30 years ago this week, Sports Illustrated, the issue for February of that year, 1991, had a picture of a few of the players on its front cover.

  17. And they dubbed the team the Dream Team.

  18. It was the very best that basketball had to offer, not only in the United States, but actually all around the world.

  19. And so from 1991 until now, that term has become something that we recognize quite often.

  20. Even if you don't like basketball or sports in general, you know what people mean when they say the Dream Team.

  21. Hopefully you know what they mean when they say the Dream Team.

  22. Well, the passage that we're studying today, this text, was also involving the selecting of a group of individuals

  23. that by human standards was more of a nightmare than it was a dream.

  24. In fact, one of the Gospels' themes, as you study through Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,

  25. one of the themes that characterize the way that they deal and talk about and write about Jesus and His ministry

  26. is they write about Him as the King who was establishing His kingdom on earth in power and in authority.

  27. And if we were to imagine that Jesus was going to put together a team of men or individuals or whoever

  28. that would help Him to establish this kingdom, that would inaugurate this kingdom on earth,

  29. we would assume that that team would be made up of individuals who were brilliant, strong, loyal,

  30. along with many other adjectives that we may assign, that they would be worthy of that calling.

  31. But the men that Jesus actually chose were uneducated, they were weak men,

  32. and they were completely unreliable.

  33. In fact, consider Jesus' life.

  34. Specifically consider His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  35. This is the night of His arrest.

  36. It's leading into His crucifixion.

  37. These 12 men have been with Him for nearly three years.

  38. One of them at this point has already betrayed Him, which is why He's being arrested.

  39. And you would think, surely at least, Peter would continue and try to be there and support the Lord

  40. and do what he could, but what the Scripture tells us happened is that all of them forsook Him.

  41. All of them.

  42. Now, we focus often, when we're thinking through this time frame, we think a lot about Judas' betrayal, right?

  43. We acknowledge that.

  44. We always think about that.

  45. We think about Peter's denial because it's just so prominent in this gospel story, right?

  46. And we appreciate that so much because of his restoration.

  47. What we don't often think about is the fact that the other 10, they ran too.

  48. In fact, the Scripture says they all forsook Him, every single one of them.

  49. This team of people that Jesus had put together, they were completely unreliable.

  50. But Jesus wasn't trying to build a dream team.

  51. But He wasn't choosing the best out of what was available.

  52. He was selecting individuals that He Himself would transform.

  53. He was going to transform them from nothing.

  54. And He was going to use them mightily in His purpose and in His plan.

  55. And this is a common theme in the Scriptures, isn't it?

  56. God specializes in taking insignificant people from insignificant places

  57. and making them unbelievably useful in His purpose.

  58. If you had heard the rumors about the significant events that were taking place in Galilee

  59. and decided that you were going to go to Capernaum and check out Jesus and what was going on,

  60. you'd have been completely underwhelmed by the team that He had assembled.

  61. But consider for just a moment,

  62. all the people that have come to know Christ as Lord and Savior over the last 2,000 years,

  63. the gospel has transformed millions and millions of people, including us.

  64. We have been transformed by this gospel message that Christ died for our sins,

  65. that He rose from the dead, that He is transforming us by the power of His Holy Spirit.

  66. And of all of that, through 2,000 years, it all gets traced back to these 12 misfits.

  67. Because they're the ones that Jesus started with.

  68. It's a motley crew, it really is.

  69. But God used them.

  70. And so we may read through this in Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  71. similar to the way that we read through verses 7 through 12 last week,

  72. and we think, really, what really is there here for us to understand?

  73. But we're reminded, what Paul wrote to Timothy,

  74. that all Scripture is profitable.

  75. All Scripture is of profit to us.

  76. And this simple calling of the 12 apostles is profitable for us as well.

  77. I want to kind of wrap our thoughts around just three words.

  78. Calling, commissioning, and then warning.

  79. Calling, commissioning, and warning.

  80. Let's first look at the calling in verse 13.

  81. Would you read it with me again?

  82. And he went up into a mountain,

  83. and called unto him whom he would,

  84. and they came unto him.

  85. That second phrase there, called unto him whom he would,

  86. it's emphatic in the Greek.

  87. It literally means he summoned those that he wanted.

  88. So it wasn't an arbitrary thing.

  89. It was very, very specific.

  90. It was a specialized call.

  91. Let's look, he went up into the mountain.

  92. There's a dramatic shift.

  93. If you were here last Sunday,

  94. or maybe you listened to the audio online,

  95. there's a dramatic shift in the context between the summary scene in verses 7 through 12,

  96. and then what is taking place here with the calling of the apostles.

  97. The chaos of the crowds in Galilee stand in stark contrast to this progression of purpose,

  98. really is what it is, in the ministry of Jesus that's taking place on the mountain.

  99. But Luke adds a note here that Mark omits that I think is significant for us,

  100. and I'd like to just briefly take a moment to look at it.

  101. In fact, would you turn with me there?

  102. Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  103. I want you to see it.

  104. Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  105. In Luke's account, he also records both of these events together.

  106. He just reverses the order.

  107. The emphasis is not on, you know, which came first.

  108. They're not necessarily dealing chronologically.

  109. The emphasis is on presenting these two scenes together to see the contrast between the crowds

  110. and then the small group that Jesus was actually investing more time in.

  111. Look at Luke chapter 6 and verse number 12.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  112. And it came to pass in those days that he went out into a mountain,

  113. and what did he do?

  114. To pray.

  115. And he continued all night in prayer to God.

  116. And this is significant for us to understand, I think.

  117. Not so much for the sake of Jesus and what he was doing,

  118. but the model, the example that he gives to us here.

  119. The Gospels often present Jesus as going into seasons of earnest prayer

  120. just before monumental moments in his life and in the Gospel narrative.

  121. And we've seen him do this already a couple of times in the Gospel of Mark.

  122. If you'll remember back in Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  123. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist,

  124. and there was this amazing scene surrounding that.

  125. And then immediately the Holy Spirit drove him into the wilderness.

  126. Well, what did he do in the wilderness?

  127. For 40 days he fasted and he prayed.

  128. He was tempted of Satan in that,

  129. which is significant to the prayer and the fasting as well.

  130. But he fasted and prayed.

  131. Well, what was that?

  132. That was a preparation stage for his public ministries beginning in Galilee.

  133. It is after he returns from that time of fasting and prayer

  134. that Jesus launches into this public ministry.

  135. And it says in verse 15 that he went about in Galilee,

  136. preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom.

  137. Repent and believe the good news.

  138. The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

  139. And then we see it again later on in Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  140. After Jesus had had that day in Capernaum

  141. where all of those people were coming to him to be healed,

  142. and he healed Peter's mother-in-law,

  143. he got up early before dawn,

  144. and he went out into a solitary place.

  145. And what did he do?

  146. He prayed.

  147. Well, what was he praying about?

  148. To leave Capernaum.

  149. He had every reason to stay.

  150. But his prayer is actually what led him to leave,

  151. which was a significant part.

  152. And of course, we study the life of Christ.

  153. We see this time and again.

  154. The most important, perhaps, being in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  155. Just before Jesus is arrested,

  156. just before he is crucified,

  157. what does he pray?

  158. Not what I will, but what you will.

  159. And what's that all about?

  160. Prayer's not merely about making requests to God.

  161. That's a dynamic of it.

  162. But it's not the sum of it.

  163. Prayer, in summary,

  164. is aligning our hearts to the will of God.

  165. That's what it is.

  166. Now, I'll tell you what my tendency is.

  167. My tendency is to make a decision,

  168. to act upon my will,

  169. and then go to the Lord in prayer

  170. if I need some help to make it right

  171. because something really messed up in the process, right?

  172. Most of us are that way, aren't we?

  173. We get in the business of life, right?

  174. And things are happening.

  175. You don't have time to stop 100 times a day

  176. and pray about every decision

  177. and things like that, right?

  178. And so you go through

  179. and you make all these decisions,

  180. and before long,

  181. you're not really giving any consideration

  182. to the Lord's will

  183. or to the Lord's heart

  184. and what you're doing.

  185. And then something just blows up on you, right?

  186. And what do you do then?

  187. You immediately go to the Lord.

  188. Lord, I'm really going to need your help here.

  189. I don't know what's going on.

  190. And what's going on is that

  191. you didn't spend any time in prayer to begin with.

  192. You were acting on your will.

  193. You were never having a moment

  194. to where you could align your own heart

  195. with the will of God.

  196. Oh, what a difference it would make in our lives

  197. if we first aligned our hearts with God in prayer

  198. before we made a decision,

  199. before we made that decision about a relationship

  200. or before we made that decision about a career,

  201. before we made that decision about our money

  202. or whatever it may be.

  203. perhaps our weakness in prayer is actually a sign

  204. of how little we desire the will of God over our own.

  205. But Jesus modeled something very different than that.

  206. And here again, as he is just on the cusp

  207. of calling his 12 apostles, what did he do?

  208. He labored earnestly all night in prayer.

  209. Well, back to Mark chapter three.

  210. We're told in verse 13 that he called to him

  211. those he desired and they came to him

  212. on the mountain that is.

  213. Now out of all of Jesus's followers,

  214. he only called 12 of them on the mountain.

  215. And I wanna be careful here.

  216. I wanna be careful to hold intention

  217. the fact that these men had a unique purpose

  218. in the work of God,

  219. but that they do not represent

  220. an elite group of Christians

  221. that consists of the most committed followers

  222. or committed believers.

  223. That's not really what's happening here.

  224. Jesus had a lot of followers at this point,

  225. a lot of disciples,

  226. even is what he would have called them.

  227. The calling of these 12 men

  228. wasn't about looking amongst this group

  229. and saying, okay, these are the cream of the crop

  230. and they're kind of rising to the surface.

  231. So I'm gonna choose them.

  232. That's not what's happening.

  233. They weren't an elite group of Christians.

  234. They weren't an elite group of believers.

  235. But God did have a very specific purpose for these men.

  236. And we gotta hold those two things in tension

  237. as we go through.

  238. It's helpful for our understanding,

  239. especially as we apply this passage to our own lives.

  240. But sometimes we get the idea

  241. that there is a difference

  242. between a believer and a disciple.

  243. But the scripture makes no such distinction.

  244. The call to salvation is the same

  245. as the call to discipleship.

  246. It's one and the same.

  247. The uniqueness of these men in this passage

  248. is that they were being called to apostleship,

  249. not to discipleship.

  250. There was a specific purpose that God had for them.

  251. But even still, their apostleship,

  252. which is something that did not continue

  253. beyond these men, was a matter of calling,

  254. not personal value.

  255. Again, Jesus didn't look at them and say,

  256. okay, these are the best.

  257. I'm gonna go with them.

  258. No, it was just a matter of he called them.

  259. He called them and then he was gonna do the work

  260. to make them into what he wanted them to be.

  261. And James Edwards helps us here.

  262. The emphasis in Mark, he writes,

  263. is not on designating a special category

  264. of super followers who are distinct from others.

  265. This is made evident, he says,

  266. by the fact that the word apostle

  267. occurs only once for certain,

  268. and that's in Mark chapter six,

  269. whereas the word disciple or disciples

  270. occurs 45 times in the gospel of Mark

  271. with still other expressions for Jesus's followers.

  272. And here's what I'm getting at.

  273. These men weren't the only people following Jesus.

  274. They weren't the only disciples,

  275. but God did have a specific purpose for them.

  276. The common denominator between these men,

  277. as we've mentioned already,

  278. is that they were utterly ordinary.

  279. There was actually nothing significant about them.

  280. And we constantly have to come back to this question,

  281. why then, if Jesus had all of these followers,

  282. if there were all these people

  283. that were truly believing in him,

  284. why did he choose these men?

  285. And the scripture just doesn't tell us.

  286. We don't know.

  287. It just says that he did.

  288. And then we learn something from that,

  289. that it's not actually what they could offer him.

  290. It's what he would do in and through them.

  291. Though their purpose was unique,

  292. the call and the commission of these 12 men

  293. represent all people who have and will follow Christ.

  294. They did have a unique purpose in the beginning stage,

  295. this beginning era of the church.

  296. But what Jesus called them to,

  297. what he commissioned them to do,

  298. is the same for the rest of us.

  299. And so that's why we care about this passage.

  300. These men represent us as believers.

  301. Their call is the same that Jesus issues to us.

  302. Their job, their role is the same

  303. that God has given to us.

  304. In fact, Paul wrote that they laid the foundation for us.

  305. Think about it in Ephesians chapter two.

  306. Paul wrote, so then you are members of the household of God,

  307. built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

  308. Christ being the cornerstone,

  309. in whom the whole structure being joined together

  310. grows into a holy temple of the Lord.

  311. Do you understand that illustration?

  312. There's a cornerstone, that's Jesus.

  313. That starts the whole thing, all right?

  314. Has to start with him.

  315. He's the cornerstone.

  316. If that's not there,

  317. nothing else is gonna work out

  318. in this construction process of the church, right?

  319. And so Jesus is the cornerstone.

  320. And then how did he lay the rest of the foundation?

  321. With these 12 apostles.

  322. Each one of them representing a foundation stone.

  323. And then what happened from there?

  324. Every single believer,

  325. every person that knows Christ as savior

  326. is a living stone that then is put on this foundation of Christ

  327. and the message that the apostles preach.

  328. These apostles, these disciples,

  329. we're not an elite group.

  330. They are representative of all of us.

  331. Jesus calls us the same way he called them.

  332. He commissions us to the same task that he commissioned them.

  333. Now we noted in our study of,

  334. in chapter one of Jesus's call of the fishermen in Galilee,

  335. that rabbis did not typically call students to follow them,

  336. as I understand it.

  337. Instead, students chose to follow a particular rabbi

  338. in the same way that we would choose

  339. to go to a particular college or a university.

  340. It's not so much that we are recruited to that

  341. as we make a choice.

  342. And rabbis, from what I understand,

  343. were careful not to give the impression

  344. that their person themselves superseded the law.

  345. In other words,

  346. the student had a focus on the law,

  347. not on the teacher.

  348. So the student chose who they were going to learn from,

  349. but the end goal was not to be like the teacher.

  350. The end goal was to learn the law

  351. and to understand the law and to move forward.

  352. That is very different than what Jesus does though.

  353. These men didn't choose Jesus.

  354. Jesus chose them.

  355. And what did he call them to?

  356. Notice verse 13.

  357. And he went up into the mountain

  358. and he called unto what?

  359. Him.

  360. He called unto him.

  361. This calling of discipleship and salvation,

  362. for that matter,

  363. is not like we just are in this realm

  364. of choosing religions

  365. and trying to find some philosopher

  366. that we want to kind of pattern after

  367. to get to the greater good

  368. of learning the ideas of life.

  369. That's not what this is.

  370. Jesus has this authoritative call.

  371. He calls us not to the law.

  372. He calls us to himself.

  373. Do you see the distinction in this?

  374. And that's probably why some of the Pharisees

  375. really struggled with him

  376. because this was so unordinary.

  377. This was unusual.

  378. Jesus wasn't calling these men

  379. in order to teach them the law.

  380. He was calling them to himself.

  381. He wasn't saying,

  382. come and learn the law with me.

  383. He was saying,

  384. come and be with me.

  385. Come and watch me.

  386. Come and follow me.

  387. Come and learn of me.

  388. Why?

  389. Well, this is a nod to his identity.

  390. He wasn't just a teacher.

  391. He wasn't merely a rabbi.

  392. He was the one that wrote the law.

  393. He was greater than the law.

  394. And the call that Jesus extends to us

  395. is just the same.

  396. He doesn't call us to a system of religion.

  397. He doesn't call us to Christianity.

  398. That is as a religion.

  399. He calls us to himself.

  400. I thought about him studying this week.

  401. There was a song that we sang a lot

  402. when I was growing up.

  403. You probably know it.

  404. It's called Softly and Tenderly.

  405. Do you know that song?

  406. Softly and tenderly,

  407. Jesus is calling,

  408. calling for you and for me.

  409. See on the portals.

  410. He's waiting and watching,

  411. watching for you and for me.

  412. Do you know the chorus?

  413. Come home, come home.

  414. Ye who are weary, come home.

  415. Come home.

  416. Earnestly, tenderly,

  417. Jesus is calling,

  418. calling,

  419. O sinner,

  420. come home.

  421. This call is extended

  422. to every believer.

  423. No person will ever follow Jesus

  424. without him first initiating this call.

  425. So these men

  426. are representative of us

  427. in that

  428. Jesus has issued his call

  429. and each one of us

  430. must respond to that call.

  431. But then he's also commissioned us

  432. beyond that call.

  433. Commissioned us to a task.

  434. That's the second point.

  435. Commissioning.

  436. Look with me at verse 14.

  437. And he ordained 12

  438. that they should be with him

  439. and that he might send them forth to preach

  440. and to have power to heal sicknesses

  441. and to cast out devils.

  442. But once Jesus called these men

  443. up onto the mountain,

  444. what took place?

  445. What was it all about?

  446. Mark says he ordained them

  447. or he appointed them.

  448. There's purpose in this.

  449. It's not merely a formality.

  450. It had a distinct purpose.

  451. He wasn't asking them for companionship.

  452. He was appointing them

  453. to apostleship.

  454. Jesus reminded his disciples of this in John 15.

  455. John chapter 15 and verse 16.

    John 15 chapter mention

  456. He said,

  457. You did not choose me.

  458. I chose you.

  459. And I appointed you.

  460. And here's what he said.

  461. That you should go

  462. and bear fruit

  463. and that your fruit should abide.

  464. So Jesus' call to salvation

  465. and to discipleship

  466. and then by extension,

  467. at least for these 12 men

  468. to apostleship,

  469. this call is not in a vacuum.

  470. It's not purposeless.

  471. It's connected to the rest of life.

  472. He calls to salvation

  473. in order that he may transform

  474. and then commission us,

  475. commission these men

  476. and then to commission all believers

  477. to a particular task.

  478. Jesus has called us to himself

  479. in order that he might commission us

  480. for his purpose.

  481. And what is that purpose?

  482. That we would go,

  483. that we would bear fruit

  484. and that that fruit would abide.

  485. Well, there's three things here

  486. in these verses

  487. that I think show us exactly.

  488. It actually becomes pretty evident.

  489. It's not just the typical preacher

  490. coming up with three things.

  491. There really are three things here.

  492. Look at verse 14.

  493. What's the first thing

  494. that he was calling them to do

  495. or commissioning them to do?

  496. To be with him.

  497. To be with him.

  498. And he ordained 12

  499. that they should be with him.

  500. The foundational element

  501. of discipleship

  502. is time spent with Jesus.

  503. Now, listen.

  504. True discipleship

  505. is a relationship

  506. before it is a task.

  507. Discipleship

  508. is a relationship

  509. before it is a task.

  510. We often think as disciples

  511. that we have a job to do

  512. and we do.

  513. We have a calling.

  514. We have a duty even,

  515. you could say.

  516. But before we ever get to the task,

  517. we are called to a relationship.

  518. And the biblical idea here

  519. behind discipleship

  520. refers to an apprentice.

  521. It's someone who would

  522. learn his trade

  523. over a number of years

  524. by living with

  525. and observing his master.

  526. We don't have

  527. very many things

  528. in our culture

  529. that are equivalent to this.

  530. Perhaps the closest thing

  531. is a residency program

  532. perhaps

  533. in the medical profession.

  534. These 12 disciples,

  535. they traveled with Jesus

  536. for years.

  537. They lived with him.

  538. They saw him.

  539. And he left his mark on them.

  540. In fact,

  541. in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  542. Peter and John

  543. are preaching

  544. to the Jews.

  545. And this is what verse 13 says

  546. the reaction of the Jews were.

  547. Now when they saw

  548. the boldness of Peter and John

  549. and perceived that

  550. they were uneducated,

  551. common men,

  552. they were astonished.

  553. They were amazed

  554. at what they knew

  555. and what they understood.

  556. And then it says,

  557. and they recognized

  558. that they had been with Jesus.

  559. What was the significance

  560. of Peter and John here?

  561. They didn't have

  562. a formal education.

  563. They didn't go

  564. to the rabbinical schools.

  565. None of them did.

  566. None of these men did.

  567. But they had been with Jesus.

  568. And Jesus had left his mark.

  569. And in that,

  570. he sets forth the pattern

  571. for discipleship

  572. for all of us.

  573. That we are not called

  574. first to one another.

  575. We are first called

  576. to him.

  577. To be with him.

  578. And here's the amazing

  579. thing about it.

  580. Relationships go two ways,

  581. right?

  582. Good ones do at least.

  583. Jesus wanted them

  584. to be with him

  585. because he wanted

  586. to be with them.

  587. Did you catch that?

  588. Jesus called them

  589. to be with him

  590. because he wanted

  591. to be with them.

  592. Now think about salvation.

  593. What is happening

  594. in conversion?

  595. We are separated from God

  596. because of our sin, right?

  597. And then through Jesus,

  598. there is this ministry

  599. of reconciliation

  600. that Paul calls it,

  601. I think maybe

  602. in the Colossian letter.

  603. What is this reconciliation?

  604. Sinful man being reconciled

  605. to a holy God.

  606. Well, how does that happen?

  607. That happens through

  608. the substitutionary death

  609. of Jesus Christ

  610. on the cross.

  611. Because of Christ,

  612. we are then reconciled

  613. to God.

  614. Well, that's on God's initiative,

  615. not on ours.

  616. He initiates that.

  617. He initiates that relationship.

  618. He has redeemed us

  619. because he wants us.

  620. And he calls these men

  621. to be with him,

  622. not just because he wants

  623. to show them the ropes,

  624. but because he wants

  625. to be with them.

  626. He wants to have

  627. this relationship with them.

  628. He is setting right.

  629. In this example,

  630. he is setting right,

  631. setting right what was broken

  632. in the fall.

  633. And what did time

  634. would Jesus do for these men?

  635. They were transformed.

  636. Think about the list here.

  637. Look at verse 16.

  638. Simon, he surnamed Peter.

  639. Simon was the leader

  640. of the band.

  641. We often see that.

  642. Jesus gave him

  643. a different name.

  644. Petra, rock, Peter.

  645. Jesus didn't give Peter

  646. that name because Peter

  647. was stable and strong.

  648. He was actually

  649. the opposite of that.

  650. He wasn't stable at all.

  651. He had no control.

  652. Think again on the night

  653. of Jesus' arrest.

  654. What does Peter do?

  655. He just immediately reacts, right?

  656. He immediately reacts

  657. and cuts a guy's ear off.

  658. And I don't think

  659. he was aiming for his ear.

  660. He's just really bad at it.

  661. He was brash.

  662. It was earlier that night

  663. that Jesus said,

  664. all of you are going

  665. to forsake me.

  666. And Peter,

  667. Peter rejected Christ's statement.

  668. Great follower, wasn't he?

  669. He said,

  670. though all of these guys,

  671. he points to the other 11,

  672. though all of these guys

  673. turn their back on you,

  674. I will never turn my back on you.

  675. And what did he do

  676. later that night?

  677. Denied him three times.

  678. Peter was not a rock.

  679. He was not stable.

  680. And after that,

  681. he went through a series

  682. of really being defeated spiritually

  683. and Christ restored him

  684. from that in John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  685. What was the purpose

  686. in nicknaming him Peter?

  687. Peter,

  688. it wasn't because he was a rock.

  689. It was because Jesus

  690. was going to make him

  691. into a rock.

  692. This was pointing Peter

  693. to what Jesus

  694. was going to do with him.

  695. And that's exactly

  696. what he became.

  697. You get into the book of Acts

  698. and it's Peter,

  699. the representative

  700. of the apostles

  701. on the day of Pentecost

  702. that preaches this message

  703. of the gospel

  704. and 3,000 souls

  705. come to Christ.

  706. It is through Peter

  707. that these men were led

  708. to preach the gospel

  709. all throughout the world.

  710. He became the rock.

  711. But then look at the next verse,

  712. verse 17.

  713. James,

  714. the son of Zebedee,

  715. John,

  716. the brother of James.

  717. He gave them a nickname too.

  718. This nickname was

  719. Bonaerges,

  720. sons of thunder.

  721. This wasn't because

  722. that's what Jesus

  723. was making them into though.

  724. It's actually the opposite here.

  725. this is what he was

  726. transforming them from.

  727. Now think about it.

  728. Remember there's a time

  729. in the gospels

  730. that John was upset

  731. about a particular town's

  732. rejection of Jesus.

  733. And John tells Jesus,

  734. why don't we pray

  735. to the father

  736. that he send down fire

  737. from heaven

  738. to consume them?

  739. Like he's a son of thunder.

  740. Sure.

  741. He didn't mess around.

  742. But how do we know

  743. John now?

  744. He's actually

  745. the apostle of love

  746. we refer him to.

  747. Why?

  748. Because Jesus

  749. transformed his life.

  750. Being with Jesus

  751. did something for him

  752. that no textbook

  753. could ever do.

  754. Being with Jesus

  755. made a difference

  756. in his life.

  757. Think about these other men.

  758. You've got Andrew

  759. on one side

  760. who is like

  761. the eternal optimist.

  762. Every time you see Andrew

  763. he just immediately believes

  764. and tries to bring

  765. other people

  766. to remedy a situation.

  767. On the other end

  768. you have Thomas

  769. who's the eternal pessimist.

  770. Who though he was loyal

  771. to an extent

  772. still said

  773. well we might as well

  774. go with Jesus to Jerusalem

  775. and all die with him.

  776. He was just

  777. an eternal pessimist.

  778. And Jesus brings

  779. these two people together.

  780. And then you've got

  781. Matthew the tax collector

  782. and Simon the zealot

  783. the political radical man

  784. that would have sooner

  785. murdered Matthew

  786. than actually live

  787. with him for three years.

  788. Jesus brings

  789. he transforms their life.

  790. He taught them.

  791. Why did he teach them?

  792. Because he had a purpose.

  793. What was that purpose?

  794. Well Acts tells us

  795. again

  796. Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  797. and verse 8

  798. Jesus says

  799. you will be my witnesses.

  800. Jerusalem and Samaria

  801. and all around the world.

  802. Time with Jesus.

  803. He taught them truth.

  804. He taught them doctrine.

  805. He taught them who he was.

  806. He trained them.

  807. He said watch me.

  808. They saw how he interacted

  809. with people.

  810. They saw how he cared

  811. for the needs of people.

  812. They saw his mannerisms.

  813. They saw his love.

  814. They witnessed

  815. all of these things

  816. and then Jesus periodically

  817. would send them out

  818. like on these little

  819. mini missions.

  820. And they would go and preach

  821. and they would come back

  822. and report to Jesus.

  823. He trained them

  824. for their purpose.

  825. How did all that come to be?

  826. Well it's just because

  827. they were with him.

  828. They were with him.

  829. You say what does this

  830. have to do with me?

  831. We don't have the privilege

  832. of walking through Palestine

  833. with Jesus.

  834. that's the uniqueness

  835. of the call for these men.

  836. We don't have that opportunity.

  837. We have something different.

  838. We have the scripture.

  839. You say how can I be with Jesus?

  840. You were Jesus through his word.

  841. Jesus told the Pharisees one time

  842. he said you go to the law

  843. you go to the scriptures

  844. believing that in them

  845. you have eternal life

  846. but I'm telling you

  847. that what the scriptures

  848. are about

  849. they testify of me

  850. Jesus said.

  851. He said it doesn't matter

  852. where you turn.

  853. You go to the Old Testament

  854. guess what you're going to find?

  855. Jesus.

  856. That's its purpose.

  857. You go to the gospels

  858. you see Jesus.

  859. You go to the epistles

  860. you see Jesus.

  861. You want to be with Jesus?

  862. Get in the word.

  863. It's a living book.

  864. Hebrews tells us

  865. that it is

  866. it is

  867. a living book

  868. that it is sharper

  869. than any two-edged sword

  870. it pierces to the dividing

  871. asunder.

  872. It reads the thoughts

  873. and intentions

  874. of our hearts.

  875. That's what it does.

  876. Jesus does his work

  877. through his word.

  878. That's why when we come

  879. to church on Sunday

  880. we're committed to the word.

  881. That's why we spend

  882. so much time praying

  883. that the word would increase

  884. and prevail in our lives

  885. because that's how

  886. we spend time with Jesus

  887. through the word.

  888. You say I don't feel

  889. like I know him well.

  890. I don't feel like

  891. I have this understanding

  892. and I don't feel like

  893. I have this training

  894. to do what he's called me to do.

  895. Well just get with him.

  896. Just spend some time

  897. with him

  898. every day

  899. in the word.

  900. And guess what?

  901. He's going to transform you too.

  902. Because that's what he does.

  903. He doesn't call us

  904. because we're capable.

  905. He calls us

  906. and then he transforms us

  907. into what he wants us to be.

  908. So they were called

  909. to be with him.

  910. Secondly,

  911. they were called

  912. to preach the gospel.

  913. This just makes sense,

  914. doesn't it?

  915. They were called

  916. to preach the gospel.

  917. Look at verse 14.

  918. And he ordained the twelve

  919. that they should be with him

  920. and that he might send them

  921. forth to preach.

  922. Preaching

  923. was Jesus'

  924. primary purpose.

  925. So it doesn't come

  926. as a surprise for us

  927. that it was to be

  928. the priority

  929. of his followers as well.

  930. While he remained on earth,

  931. they preached the gospel

  932. of the kingdom

  933. that he was preaching

  934. in chapter one.

  935. But once he ascended

  936. back to heaven,

  937. their message

  938. was to be about

  939. the crucifixion

  940. and resurrection.

  941. Flip with me

  942. to Acts chapter 10.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  943. Would you just do that quick?

  944. I know I've had you

  945. turning a lot,

  946. but it's just good.

  947. So turn to Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  948. with me if you would.

  949. Acts chapter 10.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  950. Look down with me

  951. at verse 39.

  952. So Peter has gone

  953. to this

  954. Gentile man

  955. named Cornelius

  956. and he begins

  957. to preach the gospel.

  958. And listen to what Peter

  959. says in verse 39.

  960. He says,

  961. We are witnesses

  962. of all things

  963. which Jesus did

  964. both in the land

  965. of the Jews

  966. and in Jerusalem

  967. whom they slew

  968. and hung on a tree.

  969. Him

  970. God raised up

  971. the third day

  972. and showed him openly.

  973. Not to all the people,

  974. but unto witnesses

  975. chosen before of God.

  976. Even to us,

  977. Peter says,

  978. who did eat and drink

  979. with him

  980. after he rose from the dead.

  981. I saw him

  982. with my own eyes.

  983. I witnessed it.

  984. And he commanded us

  985. to preach unto the people

  986. and to testify

  987. that it is he

  988. which was ordained of God

  989. to be the judge

  990. of the living and the dead.

  991. To him

  992. give all the prophets witness

  993. that through his name

  994. whosoever believeth in him

  995. shall receive remission

  996. of sins.

  997. What was it they were

  998. supposed to preach?

  999. This is it.

  1000. This is it.

1001. That Jesus is the son of God.

  1002. That he died

  1003. for the sins

  1004. of man.

  1005. That he rose

  1006. on the third day.

  1007. And that all

  1008. who come to him

  1009. in faith

  1010. will receive

  1011. forgiveness

  1012. of their sins

  1013. and eternal life.

  1014. that's the message.

  1015. That's what Jesus

  1016. had taught them.

1017. That's what he had taught them

  1018. not merely

  1019. in his own teaching

  1020. but through the example

  1021. of the prophets.

  1022. Did you notice

  1023. what Peter said?

  1024. That even the prophets

  1025. witness of this

  1026. and he just goes

  1027. through what?

  1028. Not his own thoughts

  1029. or ideologies.

  1030. He goes through

  1031. the word.

  1032. And as he preaches

  1033. the word

  1034. he inevitably preaches

  1035. the gospel

  1036. and Cornelius

1037. and a bunch of other people

  1038. get saved

1039. and they receive the spirit

  1040. and they are baptized

  1041. in that moment

  1042. and it's amazing.

  1043. Guess what?

  1044. This wasn't a commission

1045. only for these 12 men.

  1046. It's a commission

  1047. for you.

  1048. It's a commission

  1049. for me.

  1050. That we take

  1051. this same gospel

  1052. and we share it.

  1053. Somebody told me

  1054. recently that

  1055. you'll never find

  1056. evidence

  1057. in the New Testament

  1058. of the church

  1059. exhorting people

  1060. to evangelize.

  1061. Well that's foolish.

  1062. Jesus himself said

  1063. in Matthew 28

  1064. all authority

  1065. in heaven

  1066. and on earth

  1067. is given to me.

  1068. Go therefore

  1069. and make disciples.

  1070. It wasn't just

  1071. the disciples

  1072. the 12

  1073. that were gathered

  1074. at that moment.

1075. There were lots of people

  1076. gathered around

1077. when Jesus made this statement.

  1078. Go therefore

  1079. and preach the gospel.

  1080. Baptize them

1081. in the name of the Father

  1082. and the Son

  1083. of the Holy Spirit.

  1084. Teach them to observe

  1085. all things

  1086. whatsoever I have commanded.

  1087. And then he gives

  1088. this great promise.

  1089. I'll go with you.

1090. Isn't that the worst thing

  1091. about evangelism?

  1092. Is you're worried

  1093. that you won't know

  1094. what to say

  1095. and you're worried

1096. that you're going to be

  1097. asked a question

1098. that you won't be able

  1099. to answer

1100. and then you're just scared

  1101. because people are just

  1102. sometimes malicious

  1103. and you're not sure

1104. if you want to stick yourself

  1105. out there like that.

  1106. But then you think

  1107. back to this promise.

  1108. Jesus says go

  1109. so it's a matter of command.

  1110. He commissions us

1111. to do it as believers

1112. but then he says look

1113. I'm going to go with you.

  1114. I will help you.

  1115. And what you'll find

  1116. is the more

1117. that you share the gospel

  1118. it's amazing Marty.

  1119. It's amazing how

1120. when you share the gospel

  1121. Jesus helps.

1122. He brings to your mind

  1123. exactly the verses

  1124. that otherwise beforehand

  1125. you wouldn't have been

  1126. prepared to share

  1127. but he brings them

  1128. to your mind.

  1129. Why?

1130. Because you've been with him.

  1131. You've been with him.

1132. And in the process of that

  1133. he's given you

  1134. a burden to share

  1135. and then he's also

1136. taught you what to share

  1137. and I should share

  1138. this truth.

  1139. He brings it on

  1140. and then sometimes

  1141. people are going

  1142. to be aggravated

  1143. and they're going

  1144. to ostracize you

  1145. for the message

  1146. and guess what?

  1147. He's still with you.

  1148. He's still with you.

1149. To the end of the age

  1150. he says.

  1151. We could go on

1152. and on in the New Testament

  1153. but look this wasn't

1154. just a call for these men.

  1155. This is a call

1156. for every one of us.

  1157. Anyone who names

  1158. the name of Christ

  1159. preach the gospel.

  1160. Thirdly

  1161. to do good

  1162. and oppose evil.

  1163. To do good

  1164. and oppose evil.

  1165. Look with me

  1166. back at Mark 3

    Mark 3:15

  1167. verse 15

  1168. and to have power

  1169. to heal sicknesses

  1170. and to cast out

  1171. devils.

  1172. Now

  1173. the Holy Spirit

  1174. did empower

  1175. these men

  1176. to do supernatural

  1177. things.

  1178. Healing sicknesses

1179. we see it in the scripture

  1180. casting out demons.

  1181. In the gospels

  1182. it was an extension

  1183. of Jesus' ministry.

1184. In the book of Acts

  1185. it was

  1186. a sign

  1187. of this

  1188. apostolic age

  1189. in which

  1190. the Holy Spirit

  1191. was empowering

  1192. these men

  1193. as a proof

  1194. of the gospel.

  1195. Now

  1196. God doesn't call us

  1197. to heal people

1198. and he doesn't call us

  1199. to exercise demons.

  1200. You'll never find that

  1201. in the New Testament

  1202. anywhere.

  1203. How does this apply

  1204. to us?

  1205. Do good

  1206. and oppose evil.

  1207. There's plenty

  1208. of instruction

  1209. in the New Testament

  1210. for that.

  1211. I can't heal anybody

1212. but I can help them.

  1213. I can see a need

  1214. and try to make

  1215. a difference

  1216. in their life

  1217. and the resources

1218. that God has given me.

  1219. I can't cast out

  1220. a demon

1221. but I can stand firm

1222. on the truth of God

  1223. and stand against

  1224. the cultural evils

  1225. of our day.

  1226. Both of these things

  1227. are accomplished

  1228. first when we

  1229. faithfully share

  1230. the gospel.

  1231. It's just by nature

  1232. how it is

  1233. but Jesus did

  1234. much more

  1235. than preaching.

  1236. Preaching was his purpose

1237. but he put a significant

  1238. amount of time

  1239. and effort

  1240. into helping people

  1241. loving people

  1242. opposing

  1243. the evil

  1244. of his day.

  1245. James Edwards

  1246. again

  1247. disciples are not

  1248. simply defined

1249. by what they stand for

  1250. but also

  1251. what they stand

  1252. against.

  1253. They're commissioned

  1254. to confront

  1255. demonic and evil powers

  1256. however they manifest

  1257. themselves

  1258. and to confront

  1259. them not only

  1260. in thought

  1261. but in word

  1262. and action.

  1263. Remember what

  1264. James said

  1265. in James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  1266. what good is it

  1267. my brothers

  1268. if someone says

  1269. he has faith

  1270. but does not

  1271. have works

  1272. can that faith

  1273. save him?

  1274. That is the important

  1275. thing there.

  1276. Can that kind

  1277. of faith save him?

  1278. If a brother

  1279. or sister

  1280. is poorly clothed

  1281. and lacking

  1282. in daily food

  1283. and one of you

  1284. says to them

  1285. go in peace

  1286. and be warmed

  1287. and filled

  1288. without giving

  1289. them the things

  1290. needed for the body

  1291. what good is that?

  1292. So also

  1293. faith by itself

  1294. if it does not

  1295. have works

  1296. is dead.

  1297. It's dead.

  1298. What's God

  1299. called us to?

  1300. We'll be with him

  1301. share the gospel

  1302. and then do good.

  1303. Do good

  1304. and oppose evil

  1305. in whatever way

  1306. it may manifest itself.

  1307. As we close

1308. I just want to say

  1309. discipleship

  1310. is not about

  1311. what disciples

  1312. can do for Jesus

  1313. but it's about

  1314. what Jesus

  1315. will make

  1316. of disciples.

  1317. You say

  1318. I've come to Jesus

  1319. because I have

1320. so much to offer him.

  1321. No you don't.

  1322. You may have

1323. a lot to offer me.

  1324. You may have

  1325. a lot to offer

  1326. our church

  1327. but there's nothing

  1328. you can offer him.

  1329. But the grace

  1330. of Jesus

  1331. is exemplified

  1332. in the fact

  1333. that he wants you

  1334. anyways.

  1335. No matter what

  1336. your qualifications

  1337. he'll transform you

  1338. into what

  1339. he desires

  1340. for you to be.

  1341. The commission

  1342. given to these men

  1343. is unique.

  1344. There's no doubt

  1345. about that.

  1346. We are not apostles

  1347. but they're

  1348. representatives

  1349. of every disciple.

  1350. Church

  1351. we have a call

  1352. to be with Jesus

  1353. to preach

  1354. his gospel

  1355. to do good

  1356. and to oppose

  1357. evil.

  1358. .
