  1. Well, we've noted a number of times through our study of the Gospel of Mark that Mark's

  2. Gospel presents the life of Jesus in a mosaic form.

  3. And so rather than narrating the events of Jesus' life in a strictly chronological way,

  4. Mark, under God's guiding hand, is choosing to write in a sort of topical way.

  5. As we go through his Gospel, we see that he's really given us these snapshots of various things about Jesus

  6. rather than giving us a clear timeline exactly of how Jesus went about his life.

  7. And his desire, of course, as we have said over and over, was to persuade the reader

  8. that Jesus of Nazareth is indeed the Messiah and the Son of God.

  9. And so he accomplishes that by giving us these snapshots, persuading us not just to be entertained by the stories,

  10. but to actually come to a point of faith in the person of Jesus and to believe in his work,

  11. ultimately in his death and resurrection.

  12. And though there are various moments of Jesus' teaching that are expressed and explained throughout the book,

  13. there's really only two places that Mark deals specifically with the content of Jesus' teaching.

  14. Mark is focused on the Lord's use of parables,

  15. and he collected just a handful of them,

  16. and he linked them together to help us understand the message of Christ,

  17. the Gospel of Christ,

  18. as well as the message of the kingdom and these comparisons to the kingdom.

  19. So, one thing that we don't have in this chapter is,

  20. it's not a random assortment of stories that Jesus told.

  21. It's not that Mark just grabbed a few of his favorites and threw them in here.

  22. We know that Mark is keeping a very succinct and systematic approach to his teaching about Jesus.

  23. And so, what he has collected here in chapter 4 are the parables that, in his estimation,

  24. are most important for his Roman audience, his early Roman audience, to understand.

  25. And so, when we come to these parables, we don't come just saying,

  26. okay, Jesus told this really nice story here about the four soils,

  27. and then he told this really nice story about a lamp,

  28. and then he told this really nice story about casting seed and things eventually growing,

  29. and then ultimately wraps it up with just another nice story about the mustard seed

  30. and how it grows into a big bush.

  31. It's not just that Mark thought, these are all my favorites.

  32. I want people to hear these favorite stories of mine.

  33. No, there's a very intentional purpose to what Mark is doing.

  34. These are all linked together.

  35. There's a purpose to what he is giving us here,

  36. and we need to come to it understanding that purpose.

  37. Now, remember at the beginning of the chapter,

  38. we saw that Jesus was teaching a massive crowd on the shore of the Lake of Galilee.

  39. And after that time of public teaching,

  40. when he gave this parable of the four soils,

  41. he has some time privately with a few of his disciples

  42. and some of his other followers as well.

  43. They were inquiring the meaning of the parables that he had been teaching,

  44. but they were also trying to figure out

  45. exactly why he was all of a sudden beginning to teach in stories.

  46. That's not what Jesus had done up to this point.

  47. Up to this point in the Gospel of Mark,

  48. he's actually had a very consistent message.

  49. The consistent message we see is summarized in chapter 1

  50. as the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  51. It is near.

  52. Repent and believe the Gospel.

  53. Repent and believe the good news.

  54. And so for two years now,

  55. Jesus has been teaching this message.

  56. He has been preaching the message of the Gospel.

  57. Preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom.

  58. Demonstrating that in his works.

  59. And now he's all of a sudden making this switch

  60. to where he's telling stories.

  61. And so they ask,

  62. why are you teaching in parables?

  63. They don't seem to be as clear as you were before.

  64. Why are you doing that?

  65. And so Jesus gives that answer in verses 10 through 12.

  66. Now, though the text doesn't explicitly state this,

  67. it is reasonable for us to conclude that verses 21 to 25,

  68. what we just read,

  69. are a part of Jesus' private teaching to his disciples.

  70. So that very first section,

  71. that was the public crowd on the Lake of Galilee.

  72. He tells the story.

  73. And then there's the private setting

  74. in which Jesus gives the explanation of the story,

  75. the explanation for why he was teaching in parables.

  76. Well, verses 21 to 25 are tied into this private teaching.

  77. We haven't left that scene yet.

  78. We're going to in verse 26,

  79. but we haven't quite left that scene yet.

  80. And there's a few reasons that I've come to this conclusion.

  81. Maybe I can persuade you that this is it

  82. through these four things.

  83. The first note that I notice here

  84. is that while verses 21 and 24

  85. indicate Jesus addressing a specific group,

  86. verses 26 and verse 30,

  87. the other two parables,

  88. they do not do that.

  89. So look at it with me.

  90. Verse 21, the very first phrase,

  91. and he said unto them.

  92. It's referencing a very specific group

  93. of people that he's teaching.

  94. And then if you look down in verse 24,

  95. same thing.

  96. And he said to them,

  97. to them,

  98. a specific group tying it back

  99. to this private time of teaching.

  100. But when we get to verses 26

  101. and verses 30,

  102. we don't have that same phrasing.

  103. It is just simply that Jesus said.

  104. And so it is reasonable for us to conclude,

  105. and I could be wrong,

  106. but it's reasonable for us to conclude

  107. that those last two parables are just,

  108. that it didn't happen at this particular time,

  109. didn't necessarily happen in this particular place,

  110. but it mattered to the point

  111. that Mark was making in this chapter.

  112. But verses 21 to 25

  113. is more of the explanation

  114. for why he's teaching in parables,

  115. and it's certainly tying into

  116. the parable of the soils as well.

  117. So that's the first thing that I noted

  118. that makes me think that way.

  119. The second thing that I noted

  120. is that the teaching of verses 21 to 25

  121. is better understood as a companion piece

  122. to the story of the soils

  123. and to the story or the explanation

  124. of verses 10 through 12.

  125. We're gonna come back to this

  126. throughout our study this morning.

  127. But if you think about it,

  128. if you just take verses 21 to 25,

  129. apart from 10 through 20,

  130. it is a very confusing passage.

  131. I mean, there's some weird language

  132. that he's using here.

  133. It's not very easy just to grab it and understand.

  134. But when we set it within the context

  135. of verses 10 through 20,

  136. we begin to understand,

  137. okay, he's just explaining further.

  138. He's unpacking further what he was trying

  139. to explain to them before.

  140. And then here's the other thing.

  141. Like the parable of the soils,

  142. the last two stories are agricultural in nature.

  143. They come back to this casting seed,

  144. this growth of plants.

  145. They're all kind of on the same theme.

  146. But this section 21 to 25 is not on that theme.

  147. So it seems reasonable that Mark,

  148. after explaining the parable of the soils,

  149. does this other thing

  150. in this private teaching with Jesus.

  151. Then he circles back around

  152. to deal with the explanation of the kingdom

  153. in these agricultural terms,

  154. which would have made sense

  155. to his Roman audience.

  156. They would have understood that clearly.

  157. And so it just makes sense

  158. that maybe there's a separation here.

  159. And then the last thing,

  160. if you notice the conclusion

  161. of the whole section in verse 33,

  162. Mark writes,

  163. this is Mark narrating now,

  164. is writing and he says,

  165. and with many such parables

  166. spake he the word unto them

  167. as they were able to hear it.

  168. But without a parable

  169. spake he not unto them.

  170. All right.

  171. Well, we know that he spoke

  172. to the disciples at times

  173. without parables.

  174. So that can't be necessarily applying

  175. to this private time of teaching.

  176. That's got to be applying

  177. more to the general audiences

  178. that he was teaching

  179. when he would include these parables

  180. and what they were doing.

  181. So the content of verses 21 to 25

  182. need to be linked really

  183. with the content of verses 10 through 20

  184. and especially verses 10 through 12.

  185. Now there, Jesus explained

  186. why he was teaching in parables.

  187. And the summary is this.

  188. For those who were believing on him,

  189. the parables brought gospel clarity

  190. to their mind.

  191. But for the unbelieving,

  192. the parables had a hardening effect.

  193. And we've used that common phrase,

  194. the same sun that melts the ice

  195. hardens the clay.

  196. And the parables had that effect.

  197. For those who had believing hearts,

  198. their hearts were melted further.

  199. They became more believing people.

  200. But for those who had hardened

  201. their hearts to the Lord,

  202. the parables further hardened

  203. their hearts to him.

  204. And it had this hardening effect.

  205. It's not that Jesus's stories

  206. were difficult to understand.

  207. That's not what this is about.

  208. It's just that their spiritual meaning

  209. was lost for those

  210. who did not believe Christ in faith.

  211. And so Jesus unpacks this thought further

  212. in 21 to 25.

  213. And he first brings some clarification.

  214. Some clarification,

  215. lest someone read verses 10 through 12

  216. and think that Jesus actually

  217. was trying to conceal the gospel,

  218. that he was trying to hide it

  219. because he didn't want certain people

  220. to be saved.

  221. That's not what he's saying in this.

  222. And so the first thing he does

  223. in verse 21

  224. is he brings some clarification to that.

  225. And then he emphasizes

  226. the necessity of being fruitful

  227. hearers of the word.

  228. And so that's really the object

  229. of our study today.

  230. We want to understand

  231. the clarification that Jesus brings.

  232. And then we certainly want to see

  233. the emphasis of being fruitful hearers.

  234. And just for my help,

  235. I've broken this down into three words.

  236. If you want to write these down

  237. in your margins,

  238. maybe it'll be helpful to you as well.

  239. First, I have clarification.

  240. Then I have exhortation.

  241. And then explanation.

  242. Clarification, exhortation, explanation.

  243. And we'll work our way through

  244. those three words this morning, okay?

  245. First, let's look at clarification.

  246. Look with me again at verse 21.

  247. And he said to them,

  248. Is a lamp brought in

  249. to be put under a basket

  250. or under a bed

  251. and not on a stand?

  252. That's an interesting way

  253. to kick things off here, isn't it?

  254. It's just another parable.

  255. It's another story.

  256. And it's almost humorous

  257. what Jesus is saying here.

  258. It's a ridiculous notion

  259. that he's pointing his finger to here.

  260. The lamp that Jesus is referring to

  261. is the lamps that would have been

  262. small clay vessels

  263. that they would have had

  264. scattered throughout their homes

  265. in ancient Palestine.

  266. It's difficult for us

  267. to now think about this.

  268. It's difficult for us

  269. to relate to a time

  270. when there's no electricity,

  271. when there's no electric power, right?

  272. But that's certainly the time

  273. that they lived in.

  274. Now imagine your house, Clementine,

  275. is this stone house

  276. in Israel 2,000 years ago.

  277. But there's no light switches.

  278. There's no lights in the house.

  279. There you have windows.

  280. They're just holes

  281. that are cut out in the wall,

  282. but there's no glass

  283. because they wouldn't have had glass

  284. for their windows.

  285. Even the glass that they had,

  286. that was really for more

  287. of the wealthy people at that point.

  288. And it wasn't very clear glass

  289. like we would have

  290. in these mirrors here

  291. in this room today.

  292. They didn't have what we have now.

  293. So in the evenings

  294. when it was time

  295. to shut the shutters

  296. to the windows

  297. for safety or for privacy

  298. or for whatever it was,

  299. the rooms in the house

  300. would be especially dark.

  301. There's no light coming in.

  302. And so they had

  303. these small clay vessels

  304. that had kind of a large opening

  305. right in the middle

  306. and then maybe it would have

  307. had a spout on one side

  308. or maybe it would have

  309. just been the hole.

  310. They fill it up with oil.

  311. They light one end of it

  312. and then they set it up

  313. on a shelf

  314. or on a table

  315. or on a particular stand

  316. and it gives light

  317. to the house.

  318. They can now see

  319. what otherwise

  320. would be hidden

  321. by the darkness.

  322. And so you can visit

  323. museums even today.

  324. Julie and I have had

  325. an opportunity

  326. to go to the Museum

  327. of the Bible

  328. in Washington, D.C.

  329. And this is just

  330. this is not a paid advertisement.

  331. This is just a by the way.

  332. If you ever get

  333. an opportunity to go,

  334. go.

  335. It is really, really fantastic.

  336. I think you'll enjoy it.

  337. But in there

  338. they have

  339. they have

  340. a collection

  341. of lamps

  342. that are about

  343. 2,000 years old

  344. from Israel,

  345. Iraq, Iran

  346. from that area.

  347. And they have

  348. this collection

  349. where you can go in

  350. and see.

  351. And they're very small.

  352. They're very small

  353. and it's just displayed

  354. and you can get a picture

  355. of what it was

  356. that Jesus is referring

  357. to here.

  358. Now,

  359. what does he mean

  360. by this?

  361. Well, his question

  362. was somewhat silly.

  363. It was somewhat

  364. humorous

  365. as the thought

  366. of hiding that light

  367. is really ridiculous

  368. because who does that?

  369. Right?

  370. Who goes into

  371. their dark house,

  372. lights a lamp

  373. so that they can have light

  374. and only to take it

  375. to the kitchen

  376. and cover it up

  377. with a basket

  378. or to take it

  379. to the bedroom

  380. and slide it

  381. underneath the bed

  382. that completely

  383. defeats the purpose

  384. of the lamp?

  385. Who would do that?

  386. It's a ridiculous notion

  387. and that's really

  388. what Jesus is saying here.

  389. Jesus,

  390. in the same way,

  391. wasn't trying

  392. to hide the gospel

  393. through his use

  394. of parables.

  395. That's not what

  396. the parables were doing.

  397. They weren't hiding

  398. anything.

  399. It wouldn't make sense

  400. for God

  401. to bring the kingdom

  402. near as was

  403. Jesus' message.

  404. It wouldn't make sense

  405. for God

  406. to bring the kingdom

  407. near to them

  408. only to conceal Jesus.

  409. That wouldn't make

  410. any sense at all.

  411. So the fact

  412. of Jesus'

  413. constant traveling

  414. and his accommodation

  415. of these massive crowds

  416. only contributes

  417. to the understanding

  418. that Jesus

  419. wanted to be known.

  420. He did not desire

  421. to live in an obscurity.

  422. Think about it.

  423. He could have.

  424. He could have found

  425. a place where nobody

  426. could find him.

  427. He could just grab

  428. the 12 disciples

  429. and maybe a few others,

  430. bring them in

  431. and he could spend

  432. his three years

  433. doing that

  434. and then make his way

  435. to Jerusalem

  436. to provide redemption.

  437. But that's not

  438. what Jesus did at all.

  439. He went from village

  440. to village

  441. and town to town.

  442. He accommodated

  443. the crowds,

  444. even the unbelieving crowds.

  445. He accommodated them.

  446. Why?

  447. Because Jesus

  448. didn't desire

  449. to live in obscurity.

  450. He didn't come

  451. just to be concealed.

  452. He came to be revealed.

  453. And so his parables,

  454. they weren't about

  455. hiding the gospel.

  456. They weren't about

  457. doing that at all.

  458. That wouldn't make

  459. any sense.

  460. He was actually here

  461. bringing clarity

  462. to what the gospel

  463. meant in the parables.

  464. And we just reminded

  465. about Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  466. The son of man

  467. came to do what?

  468. to seek and to save

  469. that which was lost.

  470. He didn't come

  471. to hide

  472. and just hope

  473. that you figure it out.

  474. That's not what Jesus

  475. was doing with the parables

  476. and he brought

  477. some clarification to that.

  478. Now look at verse 22.

  479. For nothing is hidden

  480. except to be made manifest,

  481. nor is anything secret

  482. except to come

  483. to light.

  484. Now the reference

  485. to secrets

  486. and things hidden here

  487. connects back to

  488. what Jesus said

  489. is the mystery

  490. of the kingdom of God

  491. in verse 11.

  492. Let's look back up

  493. to verse 11 with me.

  494. And he said unto them,

  495. unto you,

  496. this is to his disciples,

  497. unto you it is given

  498. to know what?

  499. The mystery

  500. of the kingdom of God.

  501. Well when he gets here

  502. and he's talking

  503. about things hidden

  504. and he's talking

  505. about secret things,

  506. it's a reflection

  507. on what is said

  508. to be the mysteries

  509. of the kingdom of God.

  510. So just as one

  511. uses a lamp

  512. to reveal what is hidden

  513. in his house,

  514. so does God intend

  515. to reveal the mysteries

  516. of the Old Testament

  517. through the person

  518. of Jesus.

  519. That's the point.

  520. That's the point

  521. of the parable here.

  522. Now mystery is used

  523. often in the New Testament.

  524. It's almost exclusively used

  525. to refer to things

  526. that were at one time

  527. hidden

  528. but have now been revealed

  529. in the gospel.

  530. They have now been revealed

  531. in Christ.

  532. And so Paul uses

  533. this word often.

  534. Paul even refers

  535. to these mysteries

  536. as shadows.

  537. But God's intention

  538. was always to bring

  539. to light

  540. the things that were hidden

  541. in the Old Testament,

  542. in the law

  543. and the prophets.

  544. And in his time,

  545. he brought a lamp

  546. to manifest those things.

  547. And that lamp

  548. is Jesus.

  549. He is the lamp.

  550. So when Jesus says,

  551. who lights a lamp

  552. and hides it under

  553. a basket or a bed,

  554. he's referring to himself.

  555. He's saying,

  556. I did not come

  557. to be hidden.

  558. In fact,

  559. think about it.

  560. John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  561. In him was life

  562. and the life

  563. was the light of men.

  564. The light shines

  565. in darkness

  566. and the darkness

  567. has not overcome it.

  568. What was John saying?

  569. Jesus himself

  570. is the light.

  571. He is the lamp.

  572. Jesus himself said this.

  573. John chapter 8

    John 8 chapter mention

  574. in verse 12.

  575. Again,

  576. Jesus spoke to them

  577. saying,

  578. I am the light

  579. of the world.

  580. Whoever follows me

  581. will not walk

  582. in darkness

  583. but will have

  584. the light of life.

  585. What's the light

  586. he's referring to?

  587. He's referring to a lamp.

  588. Same thing he's referring

  589. to in Mark chapter 4.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  590. So we come to this.

  591. We're not just talking

  592. about a theological belief

  593. or a set of doctrines.

  594. We're talking about

  595. a person.

  596. The lamp is Christ.

  597. And when we go back

  598. to the Old Testament

  599. we start trying

  600. to sift through

  601. all the things there.

  602. What is all of this about?

  603. What is this system

  604. of sacrifices about?

  605. What is this whole issue

  606. about the kingdom

  607. that the prophets

  608. are getting on about

  609. in the Old Testament?

  610. What is this all about

  611. about David

  612. and lineage

  613. and all these kinds

  614. of things?

  615. All of those things

  616. are revealed

  617. and answered

  618. in the person

  619. of Jesus.

  620. He is the lamp

  621. and he came

  622. to cast light

  623. on the darkness

  624. of this world

  625. and on the mysteries

  626. of the Old Testament.

  627. And so it wasn't

  628. his goal

  629. to conceal the gospel

  630. but his very presence

  631. demonstrated

  632. his intention

  633. actually

  634. to display

  635. the gospel.

  636. And think about

  637. that message

  638. that he had been preaching.

  639. He was the representative

  640. of the kingdom.

  641. When Jesus said

  642. the kingdom is near

  643. he meant himself

  644. as representative

  645. of the coming kingdom

  646. of God

  647. I am near

  648. spatially.

  649. Spatially.

  650. He's not talking

  651. about time

  652. but space.

  653. I am near you

  654. look to me

  655. and all who heard

  656. the good news

  657. were commanded

  658. to repent

  659. and believe.

  660. And so what's

  661. the point

  662. of this parable

  663. of the lamp?

  664. Jesus is the light.

  665. He is the representative

  666. of the kingdom.

  667. Now that you know

  668. repent

  669. and believe.

  670. And for all

  671. who will not repent

  672. and believe

  673. they will only be

  674. hardened further

  675. as they come

  676. to these stories

  677. and as they come

  678. to these parables

  679. and as they come

  680. to this truth

  681. time and time

  682. again.

  683. James Edwards

  684. said the lamp

  685. coupled with

  686. the theme

  687. of disclosure

  688. testify

  689. that God's purpose

  690. in Jesus

  691. is to

  692. enlighten

  693. and reveal.

  694. He is the lamp.

  695. So he brings

  696. clarification.

  697. Secondly

  698. we see

  699. exhortation.

  700. We've seen

  701. clarification

  702. now we see

  703. exhortation.

  704. Now look with me

  705. at verse 23

  706. and just the first

  707. part of verse 24.

  708. Jesus says

  709. again

  710. if any man

  711. have ears

  712. to hear

  713. let him hear.

  714. And he said

  715. to them

  716. pay attention

  717. to what

  718. you hear.

  719. Pay attention

  720. to what

  721. you hear.

  722. So after

  723. providing some

  724. clarification

  725. Jesus

  726. again

  727. emphasized

  728. the necessity

  729. of quote

  730. hearing

  731. the word.

  732. So the

  733. fruitfulness

  734. of the word

  735. of God

  736. in our lives

  737. is not

  738. then a matter

  739. of intellectual

  740. capacity

  741. but it is a

  742. matter of

  743. spiritual

  744. faith.

  745. faith.

  746. It is not

  747. that Jesus

  748. parables

  749. were challenging

  750. to understand

  751. but the

  752. clarity

  753. they bring

  754. is entirely

  755. useless

  756. unless you

  757. receive it

  758. by faith.

  759. So the

  760. issue for

  761. those that

  762. weren't grasping

  763. what Jesus

  764. was getting

  765. at with

  766. these stories

  767. it is not

  768. because they

  769. were dumb

  770. that is not

  771. what it was

  772. these were

  773. very simple

  774. stories.

  775. They would

  776. have understood

  777. the stories

  778. themselves

  779. but the

  780. extent of

  781. the fruitfulness

  782. of the word

  783. in their life

  784. was directly

  785. related to

  786. the way

  787. that they

  788. heard or

  789. received it

  790. and whether

  791. or not

  792. they received

  793. it by

  794. faith.

  795. And so

  796. throughout

  797. this entire

  798. section

  799. an emphasis

  800. is placed

  801. on how

  802. we receive

  803. the word

  804. and this is

  805. even true

  806. in the

  807. parable

  808. of the

  809. soils.

  810. Remember

  811. the sower

  812. teaches

  813. the word

  814. of God

  815. that is

  816. the casting

  817. of the seed

  818. and the

  819. fruitfulness

  820. of the

  821. seed

  822. is based

  823. on how

  824. the individual

  825. or the

  826. soil

  827. receives

  828. what is

  829. taught.

  830. And we

  831. can trace

  832. this emphasis

  833. throughout

  834. these verses

  835. as well.

  836. 21 all the way

  837. really to

  838. 34.

  839. Five times

  840. Jesus is

  841. specifically

  842. noted as

  843. speaking,

  844. teaching,

  845. saying,

  846. casting the

  847. word.

  848. Five times.

  849. Five times

  850. then also

  851. there is a

  852. specific

  853. emphasis

  854. on how

  855. that teaching

  856. and how

  857. that speech

  858. how that

  859. word

  860. is then

  861. received

  862. by the

  863. hearer.

  864. So immediately

  865. after the

  866. parable

  867. of the

  868. lamp,

  869. Jesus

  870. emphasized

  871. the

  872. necessity

  873. of

  874. receiving

  875. that

  876. teaching

  877. by faith.

  878. Well,

  879. what teaching?

  880. That he

  881. is the

  882. light.

  883. Come to

  884. him.

  885. Repent

  886. and believe.

  887. And he's

  888. not just

  889. simply saying

  890. to listen.

  891. He's saying

  892. to listen

  893. with ears

  894. intent

  895. on heeding

  896. what you

  897. hear.

  898. It's not

  899. just about

  900. hearing what

  901. he says,

  902. but believing

  903. and receiving

  904. what he

  905. says.

  906. There's

  907. many ways

  908. that people

  909. hear the

  910. word and

  911. yet they

  912. often fall

  913. short of

  914. exactly what

  915. Jesus was

  916. commanding here.

  917. Think about

  918. this.

  919. Some people

  920. come to the

  921. word of

  922. God for

  923. intellectual

  924. stimulation.

  925. Intellectual

  926. stimulation.

  927. That is,

  928. they're not

  929. concerned about

  930. believing it.

  931. They don't come

  932. with a posture

  933. of faith.

  934. Their aim

  935. is actually

  936. to argue

  937. against it.

  938. And so

  939. maybe they

  940. come to

  941. church or

  942. maybe they

  943. read their

  944. Bibles or

  945. maybe they

  946. go to a

  947. Bible study

  948. group or

  949. they have

  950. the conversation

  951. with their

  952. Christian

  953. friends,

  954. but their

  955. intention is

  956. never really

  957. to come to

  958. the word in

  959. order to have

  960. their mind

  961. enlightened to

  962. truth or to

  963. come to an

  964. understanding of

  965. who God is or

  966. to find out how

  967. their souls can

  968. be redeemed.

  969. That's not their

  970. intention.

  971. It is intellectually

  972. stimulating to

  973. them to argue

  974. back and forth

  975. with people that

  976. believe the word.

  977. And so those

  978. people hear the

  979. word, but they

  980. don't hear it.

  981. Does that make

  982. sense?

  983. Are you with me?

  984. They hear the

  985. word, but they

  986. don't hear the

  987. word.

  988. And so some

  989. people come with

  990. intellectual

  991. stimulation as

  992. their primary

  993. goal.

  994. Others come

  995. simply for

  996. moral motivation.

  997. It's not really

  998. that they're

  999. looking to

  1000. exercise any

  1001. kind of faith,

  1002. and they

  1003. certainly don't

  1004. have any

  1005. interest in a

  1006. spiritual birth.

  1007. They just want

  1008. somebody to tell

  1009. them what to

  1010. do.

  1011. They want

  1012. somebody or

  1013. something to

  1014. tell them what

  1015. to do to

  1016. improve their

  1017. life.

  1018. So they don't

  1019. go to church

  1020. looking for an

  1021. understanding of

  1022. the Bible.

  1023. They go to the

  1024. church and they

  1025. want 10 ways to

  1026. be a better

  1027. parent.

  1028. Or they want

  1029. to know or

  1030. have some

  1031. instruction on

  1032. how to win

  1033. friends and

  1034. influence people

  1035. and increase the

  1036. success maybe of

  1037. their life.

  1038. Or they want

  1039. some tips on

  1040. how to overcome

  1041. the various

  1042. struggles of

  1043. their life.

  1044. But they're

  1045. not compelled

  1046. at all to

  1047. consider the

  1048. claims of

  1049. Jesus or to

  1050. follow him in

  1051. faith.

  1052. It's moral

  1053. motivation.

  1054. They just want

  1055. somebody to tell

  1056. them what to

  1057. do so that

  1058. their life can

  1059. be better.

  1060. They're not

  1061. really interested

  1062. in the spiritual

  1063. diet.

  1064. They're not

  1065. really interested

  1066. in faith.

  1067. They just want

  1068. somebody to

  1069. improve their

  1070. life.

  1071. They want

  1072. their best life

  1073. now, so to

  1074. speak.

  1075. And discussions

  1076. of theology are

  1077. just distractions

  1078. from what they

  1079. actually hope to

  1080. gain from the

  1081. Bible.

  1082. So they hear

  1083. the word, but

  1084. they don't hear

  1085. the word.

  1086. You with me?

  1087. Some people

  1088. come for

  1089. emotional

  1090. exploration.

  1091. So some come

  1092. with intellectual

  1093. stimulation as

  1094. their goal.

  1095. Some come with

  1096. moral motivation

  1097. as their goal.

  1098. Still yet, others

  1099. come with

  1100. emotional

  1101. exploration.

  1102. Well, what are

  1103. these people doing

  1104. when they come to

  1105. the word, or

  1106. when they come to

  1107. church, or

  1108. whatever it is

  1109. when they're

  1110. exposed to the

  1111. Bible?

  1112. Well, they really

  1113. only care about

  1114. how it makes

  1115. them feel.

  1116. they're not

  1117. really looking

  1118. for any kind

  1119. of rational

  1120. understanding of

  1121. truth.

  1122. And really, when

  1123. it comes down to

  1124. it, they may not

  1125. state this, but

  1126. really when it

  1127. comes down to

  1128. it, whether or

  1129. not the Bible

  1130. is actually used

  1131. is irrelevant to

  1132. them, so long

  1133. as they leave

  1134. the time feeling

  1135. better, feeling

  1136. better about

  1137. themselves.

  1138. They want

  1139. heaven without

  1140. hell, or they

  1141. want blessing

  1142. without lament,

  1143. repent, or they

  1144. want other

  1145. things that just

  1146. make them feel

  1147. better about

  1148. themselves.

  1149. Works without

  1150. repentance, life

  1151. without death.

  1152. But then there's

  1153. another form of

  1154. emotional exploration

  1155. that's almost the

  1156. antithesis of that

  1157. particular person, but

  1158. it really fits the

  1159. same category.

  1160. They want hell

  1161. without heaven, or

  1162. they want to

  1163. emphasize repentance

  1164. without any kind

  1165. of good works, or

  1166. they want the

  1167. opposite of that.

  1168. You know what I

  1169. mean?

  1170. That person?

  1171. That person, it's

  1172. not that they're

  1173. wanting to feel

  1174. good, everybody to

  1175. feel good about

  1176. themselves.

  1177. They actually want

  1178. everybody to feel

  1179. bad about themselves,

  1180. but they don't want

  1181. to offer the good

  1182. part of the gospel.

  1183. You know what I

  1184. mean?

  1185. It's emotional

  1186. exploration.

  1187. There's one side

  1188. where this extreme,

  1189. they just want to

  1190. be made to feel

  1191. good, and this

  1192. extreme, they just

  1193. want everybody to

  1194. be made to feel

  1195. bad with no actual

  1196. resolution to their

  1197. badness.

  1198. All of these

  1199. people hear the

  1200. word without

  1201. actually hearing

  1202. it.

  1203. But in response

  1204. to this, Alistair

  1205. Begg is helpful, and

  1206. he says that we

  1207. should approach the

  1208. Bible in three

  1209. ways, three ways to

  1210. be fruitful hearers.

  1211. One, consider it

  1212. carefully.

  1213. Consider it

  1214. carefully.

  1215. Now, Jesus, when he

  1216. says, listen, when he

  1217. says, if you have

  1218. ears to hear, hear,

  1219. he wasn't talking

  1220. about an uninformed

  1221. faith.

  1222. He wasn't talking

  1223. about a blind faith

  1224. in the sense that

  1225. someone stands up on

  1226. a platform on a

  1227. Sunday and they say,

  1228. say, Jesus is the

1229. Son of God, believe it

1230. and go to heaven, and

  1231. just say, okay, I'm

  1232. not going to actually

  1233. put any kind of

  1234. rational consideration

  1235. to this.

  1236. I'm just going to

  1237. accept it and hope

  1238. everything is good.

  1239. That's not what

  1240. Jesus is saying.

1241. He never says that we

1242. are to take our brains

1243. and just set them to

  1244. the side and never

  1245. actually access them

  1246. for anything related

  1247. to theology or

  1248. anything related to

  1249. truth.

1250. We are to come to

  1251. the word and

  1252. consider it carefully.

  1253. We shouldn't be

  1254. satisfied with a

  1255. surface knowledge of

  1256. truth, but we need

  1257. to study the Bible

  1258. thoughtfully.

  1259. Secondly, we believe

  1260. it thoroughly.

  1261. Believe it thoroughly.

  1262. Consider it

  1263. carefully and then

  1264. believe it thoroughly.

  1265. Rather than coming to

  1266. your time with the

1267. word with a posture of

  1268. argumentative spirit,

  1269. rather than coming with

1270. a critical eye to see

  1271. everything that you can

  1272. find wrong with the

  1273. Bible, no, that's not

  1274. the right posture.

  1275. That's not the right

  1276. posture.

  1277. We are going to

  1278. consider it carefully,

1279. but we have to start

1280. with the fact that this

1281. is the very word of

  1282. God.

  1283. Therefore, whatever it

  1284. says, even if I

  1285. disagree, or I don't

1286. like it, or it doesn't

1287. make me feel the way

1288. that I want it to make

1289. me feel, I will believe

1290. it, I will believe it

  1291. thoroughly, not because

  1292. it's what I want

  1293. necessarily, but because

  1294. it's what God says.

  1295. It is His word.

  1296. It's important.

1297. We talked about this a

  1298. bit in our Thursday

  1299. night group this week.

  1300. Undergirding every

  1301. doctrine that we believe

1302. is the doctrine of the

  1303. inspiration of the

  1304. Bible.

1305. That what we have in the

  1306. pages of Scripture is

1307. the very word of God.

  1308. He literally spoke

  1309. these words and used

1310. men to write it, but it

1311. was breathed out by God,

  1312. Paul said.

1313. And then the writer of

  1314. Hebrews says that this

  1315. is a living book.

  1316. It's alive.

  1317. It discerns the thoughts

  1318. and intents of our

  1319. hearts.

  1320. And I mentioned on

  1321. Thursday night, when you

  1322. take your Bible, unless

1323. if you do devotions in the

  1324. morning or in the

  1325. afternoon, whatever you

1326. do it, if you spend an

  1327. hour reading your Bible,

1328. that is an hour of time

  1329. that God is literally

  1330. speaking to you.

  1331. That's how he speaks.

  1332. He doesn't speak through

  1333. epiphany.

1334. He's not going to give

  1335. you a dream.

1336. There's not going to be

  1337. any kind of subjective

1338. thing that God comes and

  1339. gives a pertinent

  1340. revelation that's going to

1341. affect you in a different

  1342. way than anybody else.

1343. No, he speaks through his

  1344. word.

  1345. It's his word.

1346. Come to his word and

1347. believe it because it is

  1348. his.

  1349. And God cannot lie.

1350. And so what he has given

  1351. us is truth.

1352. And we need to believe it

  1353. thoroughly.

  1354. And then thirdly, we

  1355. practice it diligently.

  1356. We practice it diligently.

1357. So in addition to careful

  1358. consideration and thorough

  1359. belief, we must approach

1360. the Bible prepared to obey

  1361. what it says.

1362. Take one of those three

1363. approaches out of the way

1364. and you will not be a

  1365. fruitful hearer.

  1366. You can understand it

  1367. rationally.

1368. You can even believe it to

1369. an extent as far as just

1370. giving mental assent to the

  1371. things that you read.

1372. But unless you're going to

1373. practice it, it will have no

  1374. impact on your life.

1375. There will be no fruitfulness

  1376. there.

1377. You have to have all three of

  1378. these.

1379. And so the question this

1380. morning is, what kind of

  1381. hearer are you?

1382. Are you just looking for the

1383. stimulation that it brings to

  1384. argue with somebody about

  1385. these things philosophically?

1386. Are you just, you just want

1387. somebody to make you feel

  1388. good?

1389. And you really just want to

1390. just point me to the

  1391. scriptures that are really

1392. just going to help me feel

  1393. better about myself.

  1394. Well, there's a lot of

  1395. scriptures that aren't going

1396. to make you feel better

  1397. about yourself.

  1398. That's not the point.

1399. The point is to point you to

  1400. Christ.

1401. Maybe, maybe your, your goal

1402. is really most of the time

1403. you just want something to

1404. help you live a better life.

1405. And, and the Bible does all

1406. of those things, but, but

1407. those are not its purpose.

1408. But we come in a way that

1409. is fruitful, ready to hear.

  1410. So we see clarification.

  1411. We see exhortation.

  1412. Finally, we see explanation,

  1413. explanation.

1414. Look with me now at verse 24

  1415. and 25.

1416. This is a weird saying, but

1417. hopefully I can bring some

  1418. clarity to it.

1419. With the measure you use, it

1420. will be measured to you and

1421. still more will be added to you.

1422. For to the one who has, more

  1423. will be given.

1424. And from the one who has not,

1425. even what he has will be

  1426. taken away.

  1427. All right.

  1428. That's kind of weird.

  1429. That's a little bit of weird

  1430. language there.

  1431. Okay.

  1432. Let's, let's unpack it a little

1433. bit and remember the context

  1434. of the passage.

1435. Now, Jesus closes this dialogue

1436. with an explanation for why

  1437. hearing is necessary.

1438. That's what these two verses

  1439. are doing.

1440. So he says, you need to hear,

1441. you need to pay attention.

1442. And here's why you need to

  1443. hear.

1444. This is why you need to be a

  1445. fruitful hearer.

1446. And again, the fruitfulness of

1447. the word is linked directly to

  1448. how we receive it.

1449. And so Jesus says to pay

  1450. attention because our attitude

  1451. toward the scripture will

  1452. determine our understanding of

  1453. the scripture.

1454. And the extent of our

1455. understanding is based on the

  1456. extent of our hearing.

  1457. Let's unpack that.

1458. It's helpful to consider these

1459. last two verses in light of the

  1460. parable of the soils.

  1461. This is why I think it's

  1462. significant to connect these.

1463. And Mark's not the only gospel

  1464. that puts these together.

1465. Matthew and Luke cover the,

1466. the other parables in at

  1467. different times.

1468. They don't put it in the same

  1469. timeframe as Mark does,

1470. but they all put this one

  1471. there.

1472. This statement is with the

  1473. parable, the soils.

1474. It's important for us to

  1475. understand.

1476. Now, Jesus said earlier in

  1477. Mark four, that the

  1478. understanding of the parable

1479. of the soils is the key to

  1480. unlocking the other parables.

1481. These two verses tell us how

1482. it unlocks the other parables.

1483. So the variance in the soil,

1484. if you remember the story,

1485. the variance in the soils is

  1486. based on the individual's

  1487. reception of the word.

1488. And so here in verses 24 and

1489. 25, Jesus first addresses the

1490. good soil, the good soil.

1491. And what we could really read

  1492. this like this.

1493. We might read this as to the

1494. one who hears or to the one

  1495. who has faith.

1496. And we would bracket faith as

1497. an insertion to help us

  1498. understand what Jesus is

1499. saying to the one who has

  1500. faith, more bracket

  1501. understanding will be given.

1502. In other words, those who

1503. receive the word through faith

1504. reap the benefits of abundant

  1505. fruit.

1506. So that the person who

1507. welcomes the truth of God

1508. will be given more and more

  1509. of God's intended fruitfulness.

1510. It doesn't come all at once.

  1511. We all know that.

1512. The moment that you came to

1513. faith in Christ, you didn't

1514. all of a sudden have all the

  1515. understanding that you would

1516. ever need about the Bible and

  1517. about theology.

1518. No, we grow in that throughout

1519. the process of our life.

1520. And there's even an insinuation

1521. in the scripture that even when

1522. we get to heaven, there is

  1523. still this progressive

  1524. understanding.

1525. We will never fully understand

1526. the depths of our infinite

  1527. God, right?

  1528. It's progressive.

1529. It doesn't happen all at one

  1530. time.

1531. But to those who welcome God's

1532. truth, God gives more and

1533. more fruitfulness in their life.

1534. That word impacts their life in

1535. more and more ways and to a

  1536. greater and greater extent.

  1537. So he addresses that.

1538. The measure that you use, it

1539. will be measured to you and

  1540. more will be given.

1541. In other words, if you receive

1542. it, God will give more and

  1543. more and more.

1544. You will be impacted in more

  1545. and more ways.

1546. But then in verse 25, he

  1547. addresses those represented by

1548. the other three types of soil.

1549. So think back to the parable.

1550. Remember, the word was sown in

1551. every type of soil, but the

  1552. first three were unfruitful.

1553. Only the good soil had fruit.

1554. Now these people, they hear the

  1555. word.

1556. They may even understand the

  1557. word intellectually, but the

1558. truth never has any lasting

  1559. impact on their life.

  1560. Why?

1561. Because they came just looking

  1562. for some intellectual

  1563. stimulation.

1564. Or they came just looking for

  1565. some moral motivation.

1566. Or they came just looking for

  1567. some emotional exploration.

  1568. But they weren't fruitful

  1569. hearers.

1570. And we know that because the

1571. word has no impact at all in

  1572. their life.

1573. So to these people, Jesus said,

  1574. even the understanding that

1575. they have will be taken away.

1576. Look again at verse 25.

  1577. That's what he's getting at.

1578. He that hath to him shall be

  1579. given.

1580. He that hath not from him shall

1581. be taken away even that which he

  1582. has.

  1583. What does that mean?

1584. That Jesus is going to take away

  1585. even what he has?

1586. We'll think back to the parable

  1587. again.

1588. You see how it's beginning to

  1589. unlock things for us.

1590. Did the soil on the pathway

  1591. receive seed?

1592. Did it hear the word?

  1593. Yes.

1594. The seed was cast on the path.

1595. It did not receive the seed.

  1596. What happened?

1597. Immediately, the birds came and

  1598. devoured it.

1599. What it had was taken away.

  1600. Okay?

  1601. Why?

1602. Because it didn't receive it.

  1603. Didn't hear it.

1604. What about the shallow soil,

  1605. the rocky ground?

1606. Did it receive the word?

1607. Did it hear the word?

  1608. Yeah, it did.

  1609. It heard the word.

  1610. The seed was cast.

  1611. But what happened?

  1612. The sun scorched it.

1613. So even what it had was taken away.

1614. What about the thorny soil?

1615. Did it receive the word?

  1616. Yeah, it did.

  1617. It received the word.

  1618. But what happened?

1619. The weeds choked it out so that it

1620. lost, had taken away, destroyed,

1621. even what at one time it had.

1622. In each circumstance, what truth was

1623. sown was ultimately destroyed or

1624. taken away due to how it was

  1625. received.

1626. So while those who believe the word

1627. grow in fruitfulness, those who do

1628. not eventually lose even what they

1629. had, even what understanding they

  1630. had.

1631. So Sinclair Ferguson states it this way

  1632. by means of application.

1633. This is why Jesus stresses the

1634. importance of how we hear now,

  1635. Sinclair says.

1636. If we fail to grasp the mystery of

1637. the kingdom of God now and do not

1638. respond to it now, we may be

1639. increasingly alienated from it in the

  1640. future.

1641. But if we do respond to it, we will

1642. grow in our understanding and

  1643. appreciation and increasingly

  1644. experience its benefits.

1645. And we continually come back to this

1646. verse in Hebrews chapter 4 and

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  1647. verse 7.

1648. Today, if you hear his voice, do not

  1649. harden your heart.

1650. Because you don't have forever to

  1651. receive the word.

1652. Which was the point Jesus was getting

1653. across about his use of the parables

  1654. in 10 through 12.

1655. That there comes a point where he

  1656. will harden your heart.

1657. So if you hear his voice today, don't

  1658. harden your heart.

  1659. Receive the word.

1660. And then God, through his spirit,

1661. produces this fruitfulness in your

  1662. life.

1663. Well, let's close it this way.

1664. We need to recognize that this principle

1665. of fruitful hearing is not applied only

1666. to the work of the gospel in salvation.

  1667. It doesn't stop there.

  1668. This continues on.

1669. This principle in your life as a

1670. believer is to be actually

1671. acknowledged at every point in your

  1672. walk with Christ.

1673. There are varying degrees of

1674. fruitfulness in the good soil.

  1675. Did you notice that?

1676. Look back with me again at verse 20.

  1677. Verse 20.

1678. These are they which are sown on good

  1679. ground.

1680. They hear the word and receive it

  1681. and bring forth fruit.

  1682. Some 30 fold.

  1683. Some 60 fold.

  1684. Some 100 fold.

  1685. Now that's a little strange.

1686. If this is about God providing

1687. fruitfulness to those who accept

1688. Christ by faith, why are there varying

  1689. degrees of fruitfulness?

1690. Why doesn't everybody get the same

1691. amount of fruit that everybody else

  1692. gets?

1693. Because there's varying degrees of

  1694. hearing.

1695. The writer of Hebrews acknowledged

  1696. this.

1697. He was addressing spiritual maturity

  1698. for believers.

1699. In Hebrews chapter 5 he said this.

    Hebrews 5 chapter mention

1700. For though by this time you ought to

  1701. be teachers.

1702. But you need someone to teach you

1703. again even the basics of the gospel.

1704. You need milk not solid food the

  1705. writer says.

1706. For everyone who lives on milk is

1707. unskilled in the word of

1708. righteousness since he is a child.

1709. But solid food is for the mature.

1710. For those who have their powers of

  1711. discernment trained by constant

1712. practice to distinguish good from

  1713. evil.

1714. What's he getting on about?

  1715. He's rebuking the church.

1716. And he's saying look I know you know

  1717. the gospel.

1718. I know you believe the gospel.

1719. But some of you ought to be teachers

1720. by now in your walk with Christ.

1721. But because you didn't stay fruitful

1722. hearers of the word after your

  1723. salvation.

1724. You're just as much a baby as you were

1725. the day you were saved.

1726. And somebody's got to keep giving you

1727. the milk of the word because you won't

  1728. ever listen.

  1729. You won't listen.

1730. And so this principle continues on.

1731. You want to grow in your walk with

  1732. Christ?

  1733. Hear the word.

  1734. Study the word.

  1735. Consider it carefully.

  1736. Believe it thoroughly.

  1737. Practice it diligently.

1738. And I promise if you do those things

  1739. with the word.

1740. If you come to church Sunday by Sunday

1741. Thursday by Thursday whenever it is

1742. that you come to the word.

1743. And you're coming to consider it

1744. carefully and believe it thoroughly

  1745. and practice it diligently.

1746. You won't be able to help but bear

  1747. fruit.

  1748. You can't help it.

1749. Because it's not you that bears the

  1750. fruit.

1751. It's God that bears the fruit in you.

1752. And he does it through the word.

1753. But you have to be a fruitful hearer.

1754. You have to be a fruitful hearer.

  1755. There's so many Christians that they're

1756. stunted in their growth because they

1757. don't really care about the Bible.

  1758. They don't really care.

1759. They never read their Bible.

1760. And when they do maybe they're

1761. bouncing around from place to place

1762. they're not setting themselves up in

1763. a way where they can really

  1764. understand what it means.

1765. They come to church they're not

  1766. prepared to listen.

1767. They're not prepared to hear.

1768. You want to grow in your walk with

1769. Christ you got to be a good hearer.

1770. You got to be a fruitful hearer.

1771. This doesn't stop at salvation.

  1772. It actually continues on.

1773. And let me say spiritual maturity

1774. it cannot be faked for long.

1775. It can't be faked for long.

  1776. You can't for a little while.

1777. You can't do that forever.

1778. Because eventually the fruit just

  1779. shows.

1780. Jesus said you'll know them by their

  1781. fruit.

1782. How does the word impact you?

1783. Are you just as knowledgeable today

1784. as you were the day you were saved?

1785. Or have you grown in that time?

1786. Are you allowing the word of God to

1787. do its work in your life?

1788. Our level of faithfulness to the

1789. word will always reveal itself in the

  1790. fruitfulness of our lives.

1791. And it's a shame for a Christian not to

  1792. advance in spiritual maturity.

1793. But hearing the word is what will make

  1794. all the difference.

1795. Can we not commit today that we're going

  1796. to be fruitful hearers?

1797. We're going to be fruitful hearers as a

  1798. church.

1799. We're going to care about the word.

1800. And as we care about the word we're

1801. going to share that word.

1802. We're going to live that word.

1803. And we're going to let God do his work.

1804. He only does it through his word.

  1805. We're going to takeNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNINGNING
