  1. Well, verses 35 to 43 that we just read is really the conclusion of the narrative that

  2. began back in verse 21.

  3. It's not so much a story on its own as it is just kind of the final chapter of this

  4. narrative that we began to study last week.

  5. And it was in verses 21 to 24 that we were introduced by Mark to this ruler of the synagogue.

  6. His name was Jairus, and he went to Jesus because his 12-year-old little daughter was

  7. deathly ill.

  8. And one of the interesting notes about Jairus is that as a ruler of the synagogue, he was

  9. connected to the religious establishment of the day that was not typically friendly to

  10. Jesus.

  11. And perhaps, we don't know for sure, but it's likely that even up to this point in

  12. Jesus's ministry, perhaps Jairus at some point in that time had even positioned himself as

  13. somewhat of an enemy of Jesus.

  14. Maybe he wasn't as vocal as the Pharisees that had come from Jerusalem and declared that Jesus

  15. was possessed by Satan.

  16. But perhaps he was uncertain about the claims that Jesus was making, and perhaps he was frustrated

  17. by how Jesus was literally turning the Jewish religion and culture upside down in Galilee.

  18. But then we see something significant here.

  19. As he comes to Jesus, he shows this incredible amount of faith as he sought the Lord's help.

  20. And we noted last week, he had come to the end of his rope.

  21. He was desperate.

  22. And in this moment, he knew that Jesus was the only hope that he had.

  23. And there are times in our lives where we get that way.

  24. Perhaps even in your life before becoming a Christian, there were things that maybe you

  25. were acquainted with about Jesus.

  26. You weren't willing to commit to him as Savior and Lord.

  27. You weren't quite sure if you were willing to commit to all of these things that the Bible

  28. says about him.

  29. But in a moment of despair, you realize through the work of the Holy Spirit in your life that

  30. you have actually no hope but him.

  31. And in that moment, you too run to Jesus as Jairus ran to Jesus.

  32. And you didn't know a lot about him.

  33. You didn't know everything there was to know.

  34. You didn't know everything there was to know about the Bible.

  35. You were uncertain of a lot of things.

  36. But the one thing that you knew is that you were in a desperate need and that the only hope

  37. that you had was Jesus Christ.

  38. And that's where Jairus is.

  39. He doesn't know everything.

  40. What he knows is that he has a need and he runs to Jesus and he bows before Jesus and

  41. he says, I know if you will come, she will live.

  42. If you will just come.

  43. And so he demonstrates this great faith and whatever reservations he might have had about

  44. Jesus were abandoned as he ran at that moment.

  45. We call that repentance.

  46. Because for us to really know the Lord and receive salvation, it is not merely about giving

  47. some type of intellectual assent to the things that we read in the Bible, but it's actually

  48. abandoning all the other things in order to pursue him alone.

  49. So whatever reservations Jairus might have had, he abandons and he runs to Jesus.

  50. It's proof that even the hardest of hearts can be transformed to follow Christ.

  51. And we noted that despair is often a prelude to grace.

  52. And in this case, in the case of Jairus at least, his desperation led him right to Jesus.

  53. But even more remarkable than Jairus, this person tied in likely with the religious establishment,

  54. even more remarkable than him running to Jesus is the fact that when he made it to Jesus,

  55. Jesus so willingly and compassionately agreed with him.

  56. That is, he agreed to his request.

  57. And this is significant to our understanding here.

  58. Verse 24 says that Jesus immediately stopped what he was doing to go with Jairus.

  59. And it's a simple statement, but it's an important one.

  60. Look again at verse 24.

  61. And Jesus went with him.

  62. This one who probably at that point had been an enemy of Jesus.

  63. It didn't matter.

  64. He had come to Jesus.

  65. And Jesus went with him.

  66. And he received him as he was in that moment of his faith.

  67. And Jesus' love and compassion are so great that he will turn no person away who comes to him in faith.

  68. And that's the interaction that he has with people often in the New Testament.

  69. We see his invitation for people to come.

  70. And then we see his promise that if you do come to him in faith, he will not turn you away.

  71. And we quote this verse all the time.

  72. John chapter 6 and verse 37.

    John 6 chapter mention

  73. Jesus himself said,

  74. All that the Father gives me will come to me.

  75. And whoever comes to me, I will never cast away.

  76. We don't know everything that there is to know.

  77. We don't know much at all actually about Jairus.

  78. But let's say that he was one of those Pharisees that was telling everybody in Galilee,

  79. This man is possessed by Satan.

  80. And yet in this moment, he runs to Jesus in faith.

  81. And what does Jesus do?

  82. He goes with him.

  83. He accepts them at the point of his faith.

  84. And it is only from there that Jesus begins to do this work in his life.

  85. He gives him more understanding.

  86. His faith is strengthened because of the wonderful grace of our Savior.

  87. And so Jesus's willingness to go with Jairus, it doesn't only reveal his compassion,

  88. but it is actually significant for us to understand the unfolding nature of the story that we just read.

  89. This conclusion in verses 35 to 43.

  90. Now listen, when Jesus agreed to go with Jairus, he was agreeing to heal his daughter.

  91. Are you with me?

  92. When we see in verse 24 that Jesus went with him, it wasn't just for fun.

  93. Jesus wasn't just going along with this and saying,

  94. Okay, well, we'll just, we'll see what we can do.

  95. No.

  96. Jairus comes to Jesus, pleading for Jesus to come and lay hands on his daughter so that she might live.

  97. And Jesus, in going with Jairus, agrees to do that thing.

  98. Not merely to go with him, but to go to his house, lay his hands on his daughter in order that she might live.

  99. That's significant for us to understand everything that's going to unfold now as we work through these verses together.

  100. The issue here was not about whether Jairus believed Jesus's power,

  101. but whether Jairus believed Jesus's promise.

  102. Because this faith that he exemplified in verses 22 and 23 was about to be severely tested.

  103. Every step of the way, think about this.

  104. Every step from where he met Jesus until he got to his house where his daughter was,

  105. he was hit time and time again with every reason why he shouldn't believe that Jesus was going to be able to do anything.

  106. Think about it.

  107. Perhaps he gets excited at first because Jesus is actually going with him.

  108. And on the way, what happens?

  109. Jesus stops.

  110. Jairus is over here urgent because his daughter's about to die.

  111. And if Jesus doesn't get there, she's not going to live.

  112. He needs Jesus to, come on, Jesus, let's pick up the pace.

  113. And what does Jesus do?

  114. Somebody touches him in the crowd and he stops and just decides to have a conversation.

  115. And right there, he's hit.

  116. Maybe this isn't going to work out.

  117. And then he gets this news.

  118. She's dead.

  119. And he's tested again.

  120. It's too late.

  121. And then he gets to the house.

  122. And they're already wailing.

  123. And he's tested again.

  124. The point was not, was Jairus going to believe Jesus's power?

  125. We already know that he believed Jesus's power.

  126. The point of this passage was, is Jairus going to believe the promise that Jesus made?

  127. When Jesus said, I'm going to go to your house and I'm going to lay my hands on your daughter

  128. so that she will live.

  129. Was Jairus going to believe that?

  130. Was he going to continue in that faith?

  131. And that becomes the unfolding issue as we come to this today.

  132. So we not only see his power over death, but we see the necessity of faith

  133. in experiencing the life-giving power of Jesus.

  134. While Jesus was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said,

  135. Your daughter is dead.

  136. Why trouble the teacher any further?

  137. So knowing the urgency of the situation, you can imagine, as we mentioned before,

  138. how flustered Jairus must have felt when Jesus stopped to interact with this woman.

  139. We don't know how long Jesus spent talking to her, but during their conversation,

  140. some messengers from Jairus' house came with the news that his daughter was actually now dead.

  141. And what a devastating moment this must have been for him.

  142. He knew this was a possibility, but he had had hope.

  143. Now that Jesus was coming with him, he had perked up.

  144. Jesus agreed to heal the girl, but now all of his hopes seem to be crushed underneath the news.

  145. However, it does seem like there is somewhat of an exchange, an unwritten exchange,

  146. but I think it's safe for us to say that they don't immediately say,

  147. Why trouble the master anymore?

  148. It seems as if maybe they come and they say,

  149. Jairus, we're sorry to tell you this, but your little girl, she's dead now.

  150. And maybe Jairus still, with a little bit of energy and hope,

  151. I mean, Jesus is right here and the house is just down the way,

  152. and he's thinking, Well, maybe we can still bring Jesus.

  153. Maybe he can still do something.

  154. And then eventually the messengers say, No, it's too late.

  155. Why bother Jesus anymore?

  156. The messengers assume that Jesus's power could do nothing once death had arrived.

  157. And if we're honest, most of us would have been just like the messengers.

  158. We're not told that they had any doubt that Jesus could have done something in the beginning,

  159. but now that she was dead, why was there any reason for them to think that Jesus would be of help to them?

  160. And so this question that the messengers ask really sets the stage for the drama that's about to unfold.

  161. So they didn't deny that Jesus has power,

  162. but to them, Jesus was just a uniquely gifted rabbi whose power was limited by death.

  163. They would have understood that only God has power over life and death.

  164. And like so many others in Mark's gospel,

  165. it hadn't occurred to them that Jesus was anything more than a man.

  166. So they responded to Jairus like any one of us would have responded.

  167. Why bother Jesus anymore?

  168. It's too late.

  169. She's dead.

  170. And they were urging Jairus then to let it go.

  171. Go home.

  172. Mourn and move on.

  173. That's essentially what they're saying in this statement.

  174. There's nothing you can do now.

  175. There's nothing Jesus can do now.

  176. Just go home.

  177. And the question then becomes,

  178. was Jairus' faith only about receiving a miracle?

  179. Or did he believe that there was something more to Jesus

  180. than simply being a powerful healer?

  181. And that's significant.

  182. And it reminds us here that appreciating Jesus doesn't make you a Christian.

  183. These messengers weren't bad people from all that we can tell.

  184. They probably were even somewhat hopeful that Jesus would actually come to the house

  185. and that he would heal the girl before she died.

  186. But their understanding and their faith in Jesus was limited.

  187. They thought that he was nothing more than just this significant teacher.

  188. Maybe he's got this power and maybe he can help.

  189. But at the time that their faith reached its limit,

  190. they thought that it was over.

  191. And so they had an appreciation for Jesus.

  192. But an appreciation for Jesus is not enough.

  193. We must believe in who he is and what he's done.

  194. Verse 36, overhearing what they said,

  195. Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue,

  196. do not fear, only believe.

  197. Literally here in the present tense,

  198. stop being afraid,

  199. keep on believing.

  200. Stop being afraid, Jairus.

  201. Keep on believing.

  202. And so Jesus overhears the conversation with the messengers,

  203. knowing the doubt that was developing in Jairus' heart.

  204. Jesus does what he always does.

  205. And he gently and lovingly interjects

  206. to encourage Jairus' faith.

  207. And I love this.

  208. Because do you ever have moments in your life

  209. where you believe Jesus,

  210. you're passionate about Jesus,

  211. but you just don't understand what's going on,

  212. and you're hurt, and you're discouraged,

  213. and you don't know how it's going to turn out,

  214. and your heart begins to doubt a little bit.

  215. It begins to doubt a little bit.

  216. And then the Holy Spirit comes right along

  217. and encourages that faith.

  218. And that's exactly what Jesus is doing for Jairus.

  219. He gets this message and he's hit once again.

  220. Is he going to continue in this faith?

  221. And Jesus interjects.

  222. He doesn't interact at all with the message.

  223. He just focuses on Jairus.

  224. And his statement to Jairus is literally,

  225. stop being afraid, keep on believing.

  226. But what is it that Jairus was supposed to keep on believing

  227. now that his daughter was dead?

  228. He was to keep on believing the thing that gave him hope in the beginning.

  229. And that is the promise of Jesus, the word of Christ.

  230. I remember what we noted about Jesus agreeing to go with Jairus.

  231. He wasn't going to evaluate the situation.

  232. His response to Jairus wasn't,

  233. no promises, Jairus, but I'll come along with you

  234. and we'll see what happens.

  235. Maybe I can help you out.

  236. That's not how Jesus operated.

  237. And that's not how Jesus was operating here.

  238. When he agreed to go with Jairus,

  239. he was promising to restore the girl's life.

  240. So when Jesus commanded for Jairus to keep on believing,

  241. he meant for Jairus to keep on believing Jesus's word.

  242. Keep believing me, Jesus says.

  243. The basis of Jairus's faith was to be the promise of Christ,

  244. the word of Christ.

  245. And we need to be careful that when we come to passages like this,

  246. we aren't seduced into a sort of name it and claim it type of theology.

  247. Jesus wasn't teaching here that we will receive everything that we want

  248. if we just believe hard enough.

  249. And the takeaway from this text is not that Jesus will raise

  250. your loved one from the dead if you just keep believing.

  251. That's not the takeaway here.

  252. That's not what Jesus is getting at.

  253. Faith is not a means by which we satisfy our lust for material gain

  254. and the wants that we want in life.

  255. And beware of the people that try to present Jesus

  256. not as the savior of your sin,

  257. not as the one who rules the world

  258. and as the Lord who governs your life,

  259. but beware of the people that come to you and say,

  260. Jesus is somewhat of a bellhop for you.

  261. That if you just believe hard enough

  262. and you just make your request,

  263. he's obligated to give you whatever you want.

  264. That is not what's happening here.

  265. That's not what's happening.

  266. Jesus wasn't saying that we can believe something into existence.

  267. He was telling Jairus, keep believing me.

  268. And what was it about Jesus?

  269. He was to keep believing the fact that Jesus agreed

  270. to do what Jairus had requested.

  271. Yes, the Bible promises that those who belong to Christ

  272. will receive blessing and peace and joy in all these things.

  273. But it also promises that we will endure hardship and persecution.

  274. And true faith is simply submitting to the word of Christ,

  275. not just this generic faith that if we just have the most positive thinking

  276. that we can have, that God is just going to give us what we want.

  277. No, believe his word.

  278. And what was his word to Jairus?

  279. I'll go with you.

  280. I'll lay my hands on your daughter and she'll have life.

  281. In fact, Luke tells us that that's exactly what Jesus said.

  282. She will live.

  283. And what he's being tempted by in this moment

  284. is not a doubt of Jesus's power,

  285. but a doubt of Jesus's promise.

  286. Now notice quickly that Jesus didn't engage at all

  287. with the message that the messengers brought.

  288. He didn't engage with them.

  289. In fact, some have even translated that word overhearing.

  290. They've translated it as ignoring.

  291. He almost pretends like they're not even there.

  292. He focuses in on Jairus.

  293. And he didn't stop to explain what was happening

  294. or how he was going to resolve this situation.

  295. And this frustrates us, doesn't it?

  296. It frustrates us.

  297. Maybe it frustrates me.

  298. Maybe you're better than me.

  299. It frustrates me sometimes.

  300. Well, like, why didn't Jesus just tell him?

  301. Why didn't he just tell him?

  302. Jairus here, look, listen, it's okay.

  303. I'm going to go.

  304. She's going to be dead.

  305. It's okay.

  306. I'm going to say this Aramaic thing,

  307. and she's going to get up.

  308. You're going to give her some food.

  309. He doesn't do any of that.

  310. Because when it comes to our faith

  311. and the perplexities of our life,

  312. God often deals in promises, not explanations.

  313. That doesn't mean that we can't logically reason

  314. through the scriptures.

  315. Of course we can do that.

  316. But it's true that there's just a lot of things

  317. about our lives we don't understand.

  318. We don't understand all the whys.

  319. We don't understand all the hows.

  320. But what we have in the word is a book of promises

  321. from the God who has never broken one.

  322. And in Jairus' case, it wasn't about understanding

  323. how Jesus was going to help his daughter.

  324. It was just trusting that Jesus would fulfill

  325. the promise that he made.

  326. And listen, that's the case for our lives too.

  327. It's not about knowing how things are going to work out.

  328. It's not about knowing how God is going to do this thing for you.

  329. It's not about knowing how Jesus is going to work out

  330. his purposes in your life.

  331. It's just trusting that he is.

  332. And casting your hope, casting your care,

  333. casting your faith wholly on the promise of God.

  334. Jairus didn't need to know how it was going to happen.

  335. He just needed to trust the Lord.

  336. And I don't know what's going on in your life right now

  337. where your faith is being tested.

  338. And the faith of whether or not you're really going to trust

  339. the promises of God's word.

  340. I don't know how that's being tested right now.

  341. But I can tell you this, that God's not going to explain it to you.

  342. He's just going to say, trust me.

  343. Just believe me.

  344. I haven't broken a promise.

  345. I'm not going to start with you.

  346. Just trust my word.

  347. Look with me at verse 38.

  348. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue.

  349. And Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.

  350. And so as Jesus approached Jairus' house,

  351. Mark wrote that there was a great commotion taking place

  352. regarding the death of this little girl.

  353. And the description is somewhat interesting.

  354. The description of what the commotion was

  355. tells us verbs of things that we hear.

  356. It says that they were weeping and wailing.

  357. Those are things that we hear.

  358. But when it uses the action of Jesus,

  359. what it says that he was doing is that he was seeing.

  360. In other words, the mourning, the commotion at the house

  361. was so intense that it could not only be heard,

  362. but it could be seen.

  363. It was a visible and an audible grief and mourning.

  364. And it was a commotion.

  365. A tumult was taking place.

  366. And as they are approaching the house,

  367. not even quite on the house yet,

  368. they can clearly see and hear that there is a problem

  369. and that people are hurt and that they're mourning.

  370. And so when you consider the circumstance,

  371. a 12-year-old girl dying, perhaps unexpectedly,

  372. it's not surprising at all that this would be the case.

  373. The description of this verse also conveys a Jewish custom

  374. that's foreign to our American culture.

  375. Whenever someone died in this particular day,

  376. there were professional mourners that came to their home

  377. and were hired to quite literally weep and well

  378. as if the loss was their own.

  379. In fact, it was not only a customary thing,

  380. but it was actually a requirement in Jewish law.

  381. Even poor families had to hire at least one mourner

  382. and two flute players whenever they had a funeral

  383. in their house.

  384. And there were a number of reasons for this.

  385. Partly it was to give the family an opportunity

  386. to express an intense grief

  387. without having more attention drawn to them.

  388. But you can imagine Jairus being probably somewhat wealthy

  389. and well-known in the community

  390. has had his family that has obviously hired

  391. many of these mourners.

  392. And so just a great way off from the house,

  393. they can already hear them.

  394. And perhaps it's overcomplicating the issue

  395. with what's going on.

  396. And so that's what they're walking into.

  397. And we don't know how long the girl had been dead,

  398. but it was at least long enough for these mourners

  399. to have been hired and in place before Jesus arrives.

  400. Now, if we think through this timeline,

  401. we're going all the way back to verse 21 now.

  402. If we think through this timeline,

  403. when Jairus leaves the house,

  404. his daughter is still alive,

  405. though she could die at any moment.

  406. And he finally gets to wherever Jesus is.

  407. He finally gets through the crowd.

  408. They have this conversation and Jesus goes

  409. and then they get held up

  410. and all the things begin to unfold.

  411. She had at least been dead long enough

  412. that the mourners had already been alerted.

  413. They had already gathered at the house

  414. and they were already doing the thing.

  415. Okay, so this has been quite some time.

  416. If we follow this timeline,

  417. it's likely that Jairus' daughter

  418. probably was already dead

  419. before he even made it to Jesus to begin with.

  420. Which tells us something significant.

  421. Jesus never intended to heal Jairus' daughter

  422. of her sickness.

  423. This was never about a sickness.

  424. This was always about a resurrection.

  425. Jairus didn't understand that.

  426. He didn't know.

  427. Jesus didn't tell him.

  428. But he never intended to heal the illness.

  429. He actually had something much more spectacular.

  430. Which just brings us to another point

  431. as we're just making kind of these random applications

  432. as we work through.

  433. Be careful that your despair

  434. doesn't lead you to become a critic

  435. of God's work in your life.

  436. Now think about Jairus here.

  437. You won't always understand

  438. why God allows the things in your life

  439. to unfold in the way that they do.

  440. But the one thing that you can trust

  441. is that he is always working out

  442. what's right and what's best in your life.

  443. Jairus didn't realize what was about to happen.

  444. But Jesus knew all along what this was going to be.

  445. It wasn't a problem for him to stop and help the woman.

  446. Jesus knew this was going to be a resurrection.

  447. Abraham said

  448. in relation to God's judgment

  449. on Sodom and Gomorrah.

  450. Abraham said

  451. shall not the judge of all the earth

  452. do what is right?

  453. And I found that to be a comforting verse

  454. at a number of moments in my life

  455. when I was doubting

  456. whether or not

  457. God's work was actually good

  458. and was actually right.

  459. And then we come to a moment

  460. and we begin to see that God is always right.

  461. He's always right.

  462. He does all things well.

  463. And he does all things

  464. for our good

  465. and for his purposes

  466. and for his glory in our life.

  467. And that doesn't mean

  468. that his way is always easy.

  469. It's often not very easy actually.

  470. But it is always right.

  471. And you may not understand

  472. why exactly you're going through

  473. the things that you are right now

  474. but you can trust that he's right.

  475. Keep on believing.

  476. Stop being afraid.

  477. Verse 39

  478. When he had entered

  479. he said to them

  480. why are you making a commotion

  481. and weeping?

  482. The child is not dead

  483. but sleeping.

  484. And they laughed at him.

  485. So once Jesus entered into the house

  486. he immediately confronted the commotion.

  487. And he did this

  488. in somewhat of an unusual way.

  489. He proclaimed all the people

  490. that were there weeping and wailing.

  491. That the girl is not dead.

  492. She is sleeping.

  493. Now Jesus wasn't lying.

  494. Okay.

  495. He wasn't being deceitful.

  496. He wasn't trying to be mysterious.

  497. He wasn't actually speaking

  498. of a literal sleep.

  499. He was referring to the fact

  500. that her death was only temporary.

  501. And we understand this is the case

  502. because the New Testament

  503. often deals with the death of believers

  504. with this type of metaphor.

  505. This metaphor of sleeping.

  506. Paul used it in 1 Corinthians 15.

  507. He said,

  508. Behold I tell you a mystery.

  509. We shall not all sleep

  510. but we all shall be raised.

  511. In other words,

  512. not every Christian is going to die

  513. because at some point

  514. the Lord is going to come back.

  515. And those who are living

  516. are going to be united with the Lord

  517. in those moments.

  518. Jesus said this to his disciples

  519. on another occasion.

  520. You'll remember when his friend Lazarus

  521. had died.

  522. In John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  523. it says,

  524. After saying these things

  525. he said to his disciples,

  526. Our friend Lazarus

  527. has fallen asleep

  528. but I go to awaken him.

  529. And the disciples didn't get it.

  530. Here's what they said.

  531. The disciples said to him,

  532. Lord if he has fallen asleep

  533. he'll recover.

  534. Now Jesus had spoken of his death.

  535. They thought he had meant

  536. taking rest and sleep.

  537. And then Jesus told them plainly,

  538. Lazarus has died.

  539. So Jesus clearly isn't speaking

  540. of a literal sleep here.

  541. He's talking about the temporary nature

  542. of this young girl's death.

  543. It was a real death.

  544. But the mourners

  545. that were in the house that day

  546. didn't understand the metaphor.

  547. They took Jesus' words

  548. literally in that moment.

  549. And the task that they performed

  550. in this mourning

  551. was something that they did

  552. professionally.

  553. They weren't in the habit

  554. of mistaking a comatose patient

  555. for someone who was dead.

  556. They weren't in the habit

  557. of coming home

  558. and seeing that someone's

  559. taking a nap in the bed

  560. and just assuming

  561. that they're dead

  562. and calling all the other mourners.

  563. Okay?

  564. They knew what death was.

  565. They knew what it means

  566. to be dead.

  567. And they didn't understand

  568. the metaphor

  569. that Jesus was saying.

  570. And their reaction

  571. was not to trust Jesus

  572. as Jairus had done

  573. and was continuing to do.

  574. Their reaction

  575. was far opposite of that.

  576. They mocked him instead.

  577. Laughed him to scorn.

  578. We're told they did.

  579. And it was an indication

  580. of the hardness

  581. of their heart.

  582. Which is probably

  583. why Jesus said it

  584. the way that he did.

  585. Because Jesus was exposing

  586. the hardness

  587. in their heart.

  588. It was also a validation

  589. that she was actually dead

  590. and everybody there

  591. knew it.

  592. And so Jesus says,

  593. she's just sleeping.

  594. They laughed

  595. and mocked him to scorn.

  596. And everybody in the house

  597. knew who was truly believing

  598. and who wasn't truly believing.

  599. Look at verse 40.

  600. Here's how Jesus responds.

  601. He put them all outside

  602. and he took the child's father

  603. and mother

  604. and those who were with him

  605. and went in

  606. where the child was.

  607. So Jesus responded

  608. to the mockery

  609. of the mourners

  610. by forcing them

  611. to leave the house.

  612. So the only people

  613. that remained then

  614. were Jairus, his wife,

  615. Peter, James, and John.

  616. But that just brings us

  617. to another question.

  618. Why would Jesus

  619. make them leave?

  620. I mean, wouldn't it make sense

  621. if Jesus would allow

  622. these mourners

  623. to stay in the house

  624. and actually witness

  625. this resurrection?

  626. They would verify

  627. this incredible power

  628. that he has

  629. in this moment.

  630. And so have you picked up

  631. on how my mind

  632. critically and cynically

  633. engages with the scripture

  634. from time to time.

  635. We've come through this

  636. and every time,

  637. what have my biggest questions been?

  638. Why did Jesus do it that way?

  639. Because I often think

  640. that I could do it better.

  641. We often do, don't we?

  642. But Jesus is always right.

  643. As the song goes,

  644. Jesus doeth all things well.

  645. And Jesus had a purpose in this.

  646. I think it's actually threefold.

  647. In fact,

  648. if you're going to write

  649. anything down,

  650. write these three things down.

  651. Here's why I think

  652. Jesus did this.

  653. Number one,

  654. though Jesus desires our faith,

  655. he is not desperate

  656. for our approval.

  657. Though he desires our faith,

  658. he's not desperate

  659. for our approval.

  660. Jesus wasn't like

  661. the modern social media addicts.

  662. He wasn't spending

  663. all of his time

  664. and doing all these miracles

  665. in order to stroke his own ego.

  666. That's not what this was about.

  667. Jesus isn't desperate

  668. for our approval.

  669. He desires our faith

  670. because he desires

  671. our salvation.

  672. But he's not desperate

  673. for us to come along

  674. and boost his ego

  675. as if he were some prideful man.

  676. Okay?

  677. So that's one reason.

  678. He doesn't have to keep them around.

  679. Number two,

  680. Jesus' miracles

  681. weren't for the purpose

  682. of entertainment.

  683. That's not why he did

  684. the things that he did.

  685. The crowds treated him

  686. as if he was just

  687. an entertainer or magician.

  688. In fact,

  689. many of the people

  690. that followed Jesus

  691. around in these crowds,

  692. they were either just looking

  693. to get something from him

  694. or they were just looking

  695. to see something magnificent

  696. from him.

  697. But Jesus didn't do

  698. the things he did

  699. to entertain us.

  700. There's a reason

  701. he didn't allow

  702. the massive crowd

  703. to follow him

  704. to Jairus' house.

  705. And it's the same reason

  706. he often asked

  707. those he healed

  708. not to say anything about it.

  709. The miracle here

  710. was about the restoration

  711. of the girl's health

  712. and the strengthening

  713. of Jairus' faith.

  714. That was the purpose

  715. of what he was doing.

  716. Not to let everybody know

  717. what was going on.

  718. Okay?

  719. Number three,

  720. I think this is

  721. a real life example

  722. of Jesus' parable

  723. in chapter four,

  724. verse 25.

  725. 425.

  726. Flip back there with me.

  727. Let's read it.

  728. Chapter four,

  729. verse 25.

  730. Remember,

  731. this is a further explanation

  732. about the parable

  733. of the soils.

  734. And Jesus says

  735. in verse 25,

  736. He that hath

  737. to him shall more be given.

  738. And he that hath not

  739. from him

  740. shall be taken away

  741. even that which he has.

  742. Now remember,

  743. when we were going

  744. through that passage,

  745. this is in relation

  746. to the parable

  747. of the soils.

  748. And think about the soils.

  749. There were three

  750. in which the seed

  751. was sown,

  752. but they produced

  753. no fruit.

  754. And in each one

  755. of those cases,

  756. the seed that they

  757. were given

  758. was destroyed.

  759. On the pathway,

  760. the seed was taken

  761. and devoured

  762. by the birds.

  763. In the thorny soil,

  764. it was choked out

  765. and destroyed

  766. by the weeds.

  767. In the shallow soil,

  768. it sprouted

  769. for just a moment

  770. and then it was

  771. baked in the sun.

  772. What they had been given

  773. was taken away.

  774. But the good soil

  775. that actually were

  776. good hearers of the word

  777. actually had the work

  778. of God producing fruit

  779. in their lives.

  780. Okay?

  781. And then we get

  782. to verse 25

  783. and Jesus explains

  784. that further.

  785. He says,

  786. he that hath

  787. more shall be given.

  788. He that hath faith,

  789. more understanding

  790. will be given.

  791. He that has not faith,

  792. even the opportunity

  793. that he has

  794. will be taken away.

  795. Now,

  796. fast forward back

  797. to this story

  798. with Jairus.

  799. What's happening here?

  800. Jairus shows up

  801. to Jesus in the crowd

  802. with what?

  803. Faith.

  804. It's an imperfect faith.

  805. He doesn't know

  806. everything that he needs

  807. to know

  808. or everything

  809. that there is

  810. possible to know,

  811. but he shows up

  812. with faith.

  813. And what does Jesus do?

  814. Every step of the way,

  815. he reassures him.

  816. He strengthens his faith.

  817. He gives him more.

  818. He gives him more

  819. and more understanding

  820. and then he is allowed

  821. to experience

  822. this magnificent

  823. miracle of resurrection.

  824. But what happens

  825. with those

  826. that don't have faith?

  827. Even the opportunity

  828. that they had

  829. was taken away.

  830. And then we understand

  831. that just because

  832. they saw the resurrection

  833. doesn't mean

  834. they would have

  835. believed anyways.

  836. In fact,

  837. Jesus said,

  838. if they won't believe

  839. my word,

  840. neither will they

  841. believe someone

  842. even if they come

  843. back from the dead.

  844. And so Jesus

  845. cast them out.

  846. Number three,

  847. if you're keeping up,

  848. the life-giving Savior.

  849. And we'll wrap it

  850. with this, okay?

  851. The life-giving Savior.

  852. This is verses

  853. 41 to 43.

  854. And so we once again

  855. see the tender

  856. compassion of the Lord.

  857. what was it

  858. that he told

  859. Jairus he would do?

  860. What did he agree to do?

  861. He agreed to lay hands

  862. on his daughter.

  863. He agreed

  864. that she would

  865. live.

  866. And what does Jesus

  867. do as he comes in?

  868. He lays his hands

  869. on the daughter.

  870. He fulfilled

  871. every part

  872. of the promise

  873. to the smallest

  874. detail.

  875. He always does.

  876. And he comes

  877. in the room

  878. and in his tender

  879. compassion,

  880. he takes her hand

  881. and he says this

  882. phrase in Aramaic

  883. is how Mark

  884. records it.

  885. Aramaic would have

  886. been the common

  887. language of the

  888. Hebrews in that day.

  889. And he says,

  890. Talitha kum,

  891. which means

  892. little girl,

  893. wakey,

  894. wakey,

  895. essentially.

  896. This was just

  897. a common phrase.

  898. What's the whole

  899. purpose of this?

  900. This was not

  901. some magical

  902. incantation.

  903. The power

  904. wasn't in the

  905. words because

  906. every parent

  907. woke their kids

  908. up this way.

  909. Little girl,

  910. time to get up.

  911. Jesus just

  912. uses an everyday

  913. phrase because

  914. the power is not

  915. in the words.

  916. The power was

  917. in the one

  918. who spoke

  919. the words.

  920. And Jesus

  921. comes in and

  922. he says,

  923. little girl,

  924. awake.

  925. And immediately,

  926. just as every

  927. one of Jesus'

  928. miracles,

  929. immediately she

  930. gets up off

  931. the bed and

  932. begins to walk

  933. around fully

  934. restored to

  935. life.

  936. What once was

  937. dead,

  938. immediately is

  939. brought back

  940. to life.

  941. Why?

  942. Not because

  943. Jesus said

  944. the magical

  945. words,

  946. but because

  947. Jesus himself

  948. is God

  949. incarnate,

  950. which is the

  951. purpose of

  952. all of these

  953. stories.

  954. He calmed

  955. the storm

  956. because he's

  957. God.

  958. He cast out

  959. the demons

  960. because he's

  961. God.

  962. He healed

  963. the disease

  964. of the woman

  965. because he's

  966. God.

  967. And he raised

  968. the girl

  969. from the dead

  970. because he's

  971. God.

  972. God.

  973. That's the

  974. point.

  975. The point

  976. is Jesus

  977. of Nazareth

  978. is the

  979. Messiah and

  980. the Son of

  981. God.

  982. Repent and

  983. believe the

  984. gospel.

  985. That's the

  986. whole thing.

  987. People in

  988. the room

  989. didn't have a

  990. perfect faith,

  991. but they

  992. didn't have to

  993. have a perfect

  994. faith.

  995. None of us

  996. have a perfect

  997. faith.

  998. faith.

  999. But even

  1000. with the

  1001. faith,

  1002. the size

  1003. of a tiny

  1004. mustard seed,

  1005. they experience

  1006. the life-giving

  1007. power of our

  1008. Lord and

  1009. Savior.

  1010. The same

  1011. life-giving

  1012. power that

  1013. he gave to

  1014. each of us

  1015. that came to

  1016. him with just

  1017. a mustard seed

  1018. of faith.

  1019. faith.

  1020. And the

  1021. narrative finishes

  1022. with two

  1023. simple

  1024. instructions.

  1025. Give the

  1026. girl some

  1027. food and

  1028. don't tell

  1029. anyone what

  1030. happened.

  1031. Giving the

  1032. girl some

  1033. food was to

  1034. verify that

  1035. this was a

  1036. bodily

  1037. resurrection,

  1038. that it

  1039. wasn't an

  1040. apparition.

  1041. Just in

  1042. case they were

  1043. worried that

  1044. they were

  1045. seeing a

  1046. ghost running

  1047. around the

  1048. room in

  1049. that moment,

  1050. Jesus says,

  1051. give her some

  1052. food.

  1053. food and

  1054. it was

  1055. verified in

  1056. that moment.

  1057. That's an

  1058. important note

  1059. here.

  1060. It doesn't

  1061. seem like it

  1062. but it is.

  1063. Jesus did the

  1064. same thing in

  1065. Luke 24.

  1066. After his own

  1067. resurrection,

  1068. he appears to

  1069. the disciples

  1070. out of nowhere

  1071. and yet it was

  1072. still a bodily

  1073. resurrection because

  1074. sitting in the

  1075. room with the

  1076. disciples, he

  1077. eats some fish

  1078. and he drinks

  1079. some water or

  1080. something else

  1081. that was with

  1082. him.

  1083. He ate some

  1084. food in that

  1085. moment.

  1086. It was a bodily

  1087. resurrection as

  1088. was this girl's.

  1089. But then we

  1090. perhaps get a

  1091. little bit confused

  1092. once again because

  1093. we get to the

  1094. end of this and

  1095. we think it's

  1096. so fantastic and

  1097. Jesus says,

  1098. don't tell

  1099. anybody.

  1100. Don't tell

  1101. anybody.

  1102. And every time I

  1103. read this, Jesus

1104. does it a lot and

  1105. every time I read

  1106. it, I always

  1107. wonder, why?

  1108. Why?

  1109. And we've really

  1110. dealt with it

  1111. already.

  1112. As Sinclair

  1113. Ferguson said,

  1114. those who will

  1115. not trust Jesus'

  1116. word will not

  1117. trust his deeds

  1118. either.

  1119. And it takes us

  1120. back to the

  1121. emphasis of what

  1122. Jesus was

  1123. commanding Jairus

  1124. to have faith

  1125. in.

  1126. And that was

  1127. his promised

  1128. word.

  1129. And I quoted

  1130. this a moment

  1131. ago in Luke

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  1132. chapter 16.

  1133. You'll remember

  1134. Jesus mentioned

  1135. this in his

  1136. story about the

  1137. rich man and

  1138. Lazarus.

  1139. Remember they

  1140. both died and

  1141. the rich man

  1142. went to hell.

  1143. And he's having

  1144. this conversation

  1145. in the story with

  1146. Abraham.

  1147. Luke 16 says,

  1148. And he said,

  1149. I beg you,

  1150. Father Abraham,

  1151. to send him to

  1152. my father's house

  1153. for I have five

  1154. brothers that he

  1155. may warn them,

  1156. lest they also

  1157. come into this

  1158. place of torment.

  1159. But here's what

  1160. Abraham says in

  1161. the story.

  1162. They have Moses

  1163. and the prophets.

  1164. Let them hear

  1165. them.

  1166. In other words,

  1167. they have the

  1168. word.

  1169. And the word has

  1170. everything that they

  1171. need.

1172. Let them go to the

  1173. word.

  1174. And here's how the

  1175. man responds in

  1176. Jesus' story.

  1177. No,

  1178. Father Abraham,

  1179. but if someone

  1180. goes to them

  1181. from the dead,

  1182. they will repent.

  1183. And he said to

  1184. him,

  1185. If they do not

  1186. hear Moses and

  1187. the prophets,

  1188. neither will they

  1189. be convinced if

  1190. someone should rise

  1191. from the dead.

  1192. Over and over

  1193. and over,

  1194. Jesus emphasized

  1195. the scripture

  1196. over experience.

  1197. We read it last

  1198. week in 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  1199. chapter 1.

  1200. Peter referred to

  1201. this amazing

  1202. experience that

  1203. he had on the

  1204. Mount of

  1205. Transfiguration.

  1206. He literally

  1207. saw Jesus

  1208. transfigured on

  1209. the mountain and

  1210. he saw Moses and

  1211. Elijah and the

  1212. voice of God and

  1213. he relates that

  1214. experience that he

  1215. has.

  1216. And then he says,

  1217. But we have a

  1218. more sure word.

  1219. The emphasis is

  1220. always on the

  1221. scripture.

  1222. And there are

  1223. many that say,

  1224. I'll believe if

  1225. God will just do

  1226. something to prove

  1227. it to me.

  1228. But no.

  1229. No, you won't.

  1230. Because Jesus

  1231. said you won't.

  1232. If you won't

  1233. accept his word,

  1234. you won't accept

  1235. his work.

  1236. And there were a

  1237. lot of people in

  1238. Jesus' day that

  1239. that applied to.

  1240. They wouldn't

  1241. listen to his

  1242. word and they

  1243. saw his work and

  1244. they still didn't

  1245. believe what makes

  1246. you think you'd be

  1247. any different.

  1248. If you were any

  1249. different, Jesus

  1250. would be a liar.

  1251. So what does

  1252. Jesus say?

  1253. Go to the word.

  1254. What's our faith to

  1255. be in?

  1256. Not our experience.

  1257. The word of God.

  1258. What about when you

  1259. doubt?

  1260. You don't trust your

  1261. feelings.

  1262. Trust the word.

  1263. Trust the word.

  1264. The fact that Jesus

  1265. had power over nature

  1266. and demons and

  1267. disease is amazing.

  1268. But it's his power

  1269. over death that

  1270. fills our hearts with

  1271. joy and hope,

  1272. isn't it?

  1273. Of course, we

  1274. understand that in

  1275. his resurrection.

  1276. We understand it

  1277. primarily in his

  1278. resurrection.

  1279. But even when we

  1280. come to a passage

  1281. like this, we're

  1282. reminded that Jesus

  1283. has power over our

  1284. death.

  1285. And so when we

  1286. reflect on the

  1287. inevitability of that

  1288. death, we can't help

  1289. but ask that question.

  1290. Has anyone defeated

  1291. death?

1292. And if so, can they

  1293. defeat it for us?

1294. And the Bible has a

  1295. resounding guess.

  1296. It's Jesus Christ.

  1297. It's Jesus Christ.

  1298. The resurrection of

  1299. this little girl pointed

  1300. to his resurrection and

  1301. it prefigures the

  1302. resurrection that all

  1303. believers will have an

  1304. eternal life.

1305. And I remind you of

  1306. Jesus' words in John

  1307. 11.

1308. I think it was to

  1309. Martha after Lazarus

1310. had died and Jesus was

  1311. about to perform another

  1312. resurrection.

1313. What was it that Jesus

  1314. said to Martha?

  1315. I am the resurrection

  1316. and the life.

  1317. Whoever believes in me

1318. though he die, yet he

  1319. shall live.

  1320. And everyone who lives

1321. and believes in me shall

  1322. never die, Jesus says.

1323. And then stay with me

  1324. right here.

  1325. Stay with me.

  1326. We're almost done.

  1327. I know there's people

  1328. out there.

  1329. Just stay with me.

  1330. Jesus asked her an

  1331. important question after

  1332. that.

  1333. He makes this statement.

  1334. I'm the resurrection of

  1335. the life.

  1336. Believe in me.

  1337. You'll have eternal life.

1338. And then he looks at

1339. Martha and he says, do you

  1340. believe this?

  1341. And that's the question

  1342. I'll leave you with

  1343. today.

  1344. I know you're used to

  1345. church.

  1346. I know that.

1347. I know that all of you

  1348. could probably tell me

  1349. all the stuff.

  1350. I know that.

  1351. But that's not my

  1352. question.

1353. My question is not, do

1354. you know all the stuff?

1355. My question is, do you

  1356. believe this?

1357. Do you believe that he

  1358. is the resurrection and

  1359. the life?

1360. Do you believe that he

1361. is the Messiah and son

  1362. of God?

  1363. You say, well, I don't

1364. feel like I believe it

  1365. very strongly.

  1366. You don't have to

  1367. believe it all that

  1368. strongly as we've seen.

1369. He will meet you where

  1370. you are.

1371. But if your heart is

  1372. hardened to that, you'll

  1373. be cast out.

1374. But if you will but

  1375. believe, you'll be

  1376. forgiven.

1377. And you will not have

  1378. this death.

  1379. Because true death is

  1380. not the soul's

  1381. separation from the

  1382. body.

1383. True death is the soul's

  1384. separation from God.

  1385. God.

1386. And that's why he died

1387. on the cross and rose

  1388. from the dead.

  1389. In order to reconcile

  1390. us to God.

1391. And he says, all who

1392. come to me with this

  1393. faith, I will never

  1394. cast out.

  1395. And that's you too.

  1396. Just believe.

  1397. Well, let's take aNINGNING
