  1. Now verse seven summarizes the commission that they received.

  2. Verses eight through 11 deals with these specific instructions.

  3. And the instructions really boil down to two categories.

  4. What they were to take, really what they were not to take, really more so.

  5. What they were to take and how they were to act.

  6. And we need to remember as we come to read these verses again,

  7. that we shouldn't apply these instructions so rigidly

  8. that we think that we must only take these items

  9. and must follow this same exact instruction.

  10. That's not exactly Jesus's intention.

  11. The specific instructions were for these men,

  12. but the principles behind them endure for us as well.

  13. So let's look at verse eight.

  14. And he charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff,

  15. no bread, no bag, no money in their belts,

  16. but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics.

  17. And so Jesus calls these men together.

  18. At this point, they have observed.

  19. And now he says, fellas, it's time to go.

  20. I want you to go two by two.

  21. And I'm going to send you to some specific villages.

  22. And here's what I want you to take.

  23. Nothing.

  24. Nothing is pretty much what he says.

  25. There's a tremendous restriction and limitation

  26. in what he allows these men to take on their journey.

  27. They weren't to take any food.

  28. They weren't to take any money.

  29. No extra clothing.

  30. Can you imagine?

  31. Jesus has said, I want you to travel.

  32. And you can have nothing.

  33. You're going to go to places you don't know anybody.

  34. And you're going to preach that they need to turn away from all the things that they're doing

  35. and believe in me whom they have not seen

  36. and maybe in some cases have not even at this point heard of.

  37. And in the process of that,

  38. somehow you're going to be given the provisions that you need.

  39. And this comes as kind of a shock to us.

  40. And we frame that in our own mindset of ministries, don't we?

  41. We get this sense that God calls us to certain things in our life,

  42. certain things that are on the basis of his kingdom work

  43. and what he desires for us to do and what he desires for us to be,

  44. not only as individuals and families, but as a church group.

  45. And sometimes in the process of that,

  46. we don't understand why he's asking us to do the things that he's asking us to do

  47. because we have no way to do it.

  48. But he just says, go.

  49. And here he sends these men once again.

  50. And he says, don't take anything with you.

  51. And what was the point of that?

  52. He didn't want them to take anything

  53. that wasn't absolutely essential to the task of preaching his words

  54. and performing his works.

  55. And in this case, that included only a single set of clothes and a walking stick.

  56. Now, at this point, it's important for us to recognize again

  57. that this was not a permanent nor a universal instruction for ministry.

  58. Jesus wasn't commanding an ascetic lifestyle

  59. that's not what he meant by this instruction.

  60. He wasn't commanded that ministry,

  61. should you be called to it vocationally perhaps,

  62. is meant to be accomplished in poverty.

  63. That's not what he meant.

  64. And we know this because Jesus addresses it specifically later on.

  65. In fact, turn with me please to Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  66. Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  67. And we'll look at verses 35 and 36.

  68. Now, what's happening here in Luke 22

  69. is this is the night of Jesus's arrest.

  70. As you recall the gospel story,

  71. the crucifixion story,

  72. he has instituted communion in the Lord's Supper

  73. and he's given this great final lesson,

  74. sermon, teaching to his disciples.

  75. And as a part of this,

  76. we find these two verses nestled into this discussion

  77. as one of the final things that Jesus is saying.

  78. And remember the context of this is,

  79. I'm leaving and I'm going to send a helper to you.

  80. The Holy Spirit is going to come and help you,

  81. but I'm leaving.

  82. I won't be with you.

  83. The men are filled with fear.

  84. They are nervous about this.

  85. They don't know what's happening.

  86. And here's what he says,

  87. Luke 22 verse 35.

    Luke 22:35

  88. And he said to them,

  89. when I sent you out with no money bag

  90. or knapsack or sandals,

  91. did you lack anything?

  92. And they said, what?

  93. Nothing, nothing.

  94. So he's telling them,

  95. I'm getting ready to leave.

  96. I know that makes you nervous.

  97. I'm going to send a helper to you.

  98. But remember,

  99. I've sent you out without me before.

  100. And when you went without me

  101. and you had no bag

  102. and you had no money

  103. and you had no food

  104. and you had no provisions whatsoever,

  105. what did you lack?

  106. And they said, nothing.

  107. And he said, good.

  108. I'm glad you learned that lesson.

  109. And then look what he says in verse 36.

  110. But now let the one who has a money bag take it

  111. and likewise a knapsack

  112. and let the one who has no sword

  113. sell his cloak and buy one.

  114. What's the point in pointing that out?

  115. Well, what Jesus told these disciples

  116. in chapter six

  117. was meant for these men at this time.

  118. So don't come to this passage

  119. and think, okay,

  120. God wants me to sell everything that I have.

  121. I can only have the clothes on my back.

  122. I can only have minimal provisions

  123. and that's the only way he's going to use me.

  124. No, that's not what he meant.

  125. The purpose was that he would teach them a lesson

  126. and the lesson was threefold.

  127. This was not meant to be permanent,

  128. but it was threefold.

  129. Dependence, simplicity,

  130. urgency, a lesson on dependence,

  131. a lesson on simplicity,

  132. and a lesson on urgency.

  133. And so first we see this instruction

  134. was a lesson on dependence.

  135. Dependence on who or what?

  136. On the provision of God

  137. to fulfill the needs of his people

  138. in the way that he is determined to do it.

  139. That was the purpose of Jesus' statement

  140. in Luke 22.

  141. When you went,

  142. did you lack anything?

  143. No.

  144. Why didn't you lack anything?

  145. Because I provided you everything

  146. that you needed along the way.

  147. And mind you that all of the provisions

  148. of these different men

  149. would have been different.

  150. Think about this.

  151. They're going two by two,

  152. not 12 by 12.

  153. These two are going to this place

  154. and these two are going to this place.

  155. This person may have been

  156. staying in a bit of a shack somewhere

  157. in this little town

  158. or this person may have been

  159. in grand luxurious accommodations

  160. in another place.

  161. The provisions were different

  162. for all of them.

  163. Each of them had different amounts.

  164. That didn't matter.

  165. What mattered is that God provided

  166. the things that they needed

  167. so long as they were surrendered

  168. to obedience

  169. and to do the work

  170. that God had called them to do.

  171. And so he provided.

  172. That was the point.

  173. Not to depend on yourself.

  174. Not depend on the world's goods.

  175. Not to be anxious

  176. over the things

  177. that you have or don't have.

  178. But to be dependent

  179. on the provision

  180. of your heavenly Father.

  181. And as you know,

  182. this provision sometimes comes

  183. in utterly unexpected ways.

  184. Think about what's going

  185. through these men's mind.

  186. They've just gone to Nazareth

  187. where you would think

  188. that the people

  189. that would make provision

  190. for Jesus

  191. actually rejected him.

  192. And now they're thinking

  193. we got to go out by ourselves.

  194. And we're taking nothing.

  195. How is this supposed to work?

  196. And in this command,

  197. there's a bit of a encouragement

  198. that yes, people will reject you.

  199. But how do you suppose it was

  200. that God would mostly

  201. fulfill the needs of these men

  202. through people

  203. that would not reject them?

  204. And he doesn't explain

  205. how he's going to do it.

  206. He never does.

  207. He doesn't provide

  208. all the things

  209. that we like to plan out

  210. and all the things

  211. that we like to prepare

  212. ahead of time

  213. before accomplishing a task.

  214. He just says go

  215. and he provides this promise

  216. that I will care for you.

  217. And we think back

  218. to this same promise

  219. in the Great Commission

  220. as we dealt with it

  221. a couple of weeks ago.

  222. All authority is given

  223. unto me, Jesus says.

  224. So go and make disciples

  225. of every nation,

  226. baptizing them

  227. in the name of the Father

  228. and the Son of the Holy Spirit,

  229. teaching them to observe

  230. all things that I have commanded you.

  231. And then it comes

  232. with this promise.

  233. And I will go with you

  234. even to the end of the age,

  235. he says.

  236. He sends them.

  237. They probably have

  238. lots of questions,

  239. but their questions

  240. aren't met with explanation.

  241. It's met with promise.

  242. And the point is

  243. that God knows our need

  244. and he will faithfully supply.

  245. And he will not only do it

  246. for these men,

  247. but he'll do it for you.

  248. He will supply.

  249. He knows your need.

  250. James Edwards said,

  251. true service of Jesus

  252. is characterized

  253. by a dependence on Jesus.

  254. And dependence on Jesus

  255. is signified

  256. by going where Jesus sins

  257. despite material shortfalls

  258. and unanswered questions.

  259. That's a great statement.

  260. Dependence on Jesus

  261. is signified

  262. by going where Jesus sins

  263. despite material shortfalls

  264. and unanswered questions.

  265. And so it was a lesson on dependence.

  266. And then it was a lesson on simplicity.

  267. Simplicity.

  268. Taking along a bunch of clutter

  269. on this journey

  270. would only prevent the disciples

  271. from faithfully fulfilling

  272. their given task.

  273. If they had all this stuff

  274. to carry around with them,

  275. it was just going to hinder the work.

  276. You say,

  277. how does that relate to me?

  278. Well, it's...

  279. Who of us doesn't have

  280. a life full of clutter?

  281. We get so busy.

  282. Our lives get so cluttered

  283. that any service for Jesus

  284. really in any substantial way

  285. really just seems like

  286. an impossible burden.

  287. How could I possibly do that?

  288. I've got all of these other things

  289. going on in my life.

  290. Yes.

  291. You've got all these other things

  292. going on in your life.

  293. How could you serve Jesus

  294. with all of these other things

  295. in your life?

  296. It's clutter.

  297. In the midst of our busyness,

  298. the work of the ministry,

  299. the work of discipleship,

  300. the work of God

  301. is all but forgotten.

  302. We don't have time

  303. to be discipled.

  304. We don't have time

  305. to disciple others.

  306. We get so distracted

  307. by all the other things.

  308. The thought of actually

  309. sharing the gospel

  310. with someone in our life

  311. doesn't really even

  312. cross our minds.

  313. When's the last time

  314. that that friend

  315. or that co-worker

  316. or that neighbor,

  317. you actually even thought about

  318. sharing the gospel

  319. or in any substantial way

  320. ministering to them

  321. in the way that God

  322. has called us to minister?

  323. It's not because

  324. we always have

  325. a lack of desire.

  326. Sometimes,

  327. we just haven't learned

  328. the lesson of simplicity.

  329. And this doesn't just

  330. apply to our personal lives.

  331. It applies to our church.

  332. Even in our ministry work,

  333. if we're not careful,

  334. we can allow things

  335. to get so cluttered,

  336. so busy with this thing

  337. and that thing

  338. and this program

  339. and this event

  340. and all of these things

  341. that we end up losing sight

  342. of the whole purpose.

  343. And what was the purpose?

  344. Preach His words

  345. and perform His works.

  346. Preach His words,

  347. perform His works.

  348. Simplicity.

  349. Sometimes the clutter

  350. is not bad

  351. in and of itself,

  352. but it just prevents us

  353. from doing what God

  354. has called us to do.

  355. And in that case,

  356. it becomes an idol.

  357. You say,

  358. well, I can't give up

  359. some of these other things.

  360. My family would just

  361. be so mad at me.

  362. Well, I guess that's

  363. the idol that's going

  364. to keep you from doing

  365. what God has called you to do.

  366. Then it's a lesson

  367. on urgency.

  368. It's a lesson on urgency.

  369. These men were to be free

  370. from encumbrances

  371. that would prevent them

  372. from quickly moving

  373. from place to place.

  374. That was the point.

  375. Sinclair Ferguson said this,

  376. the message was an urgent one.

  377. The kingdom of God

  378. was near in Jesus.

  379. Men should therefore

  380. turn away from sin,

  381. live in obedience to God.

  382. Everything about their bearing

  383. should indicate

  384. that their visit

  385. would be brief,

  386. which meant the villagers

  387. must respond now.

  388. And the essential provisions

  389. that God had sent them with

  390. or that Jesus had sent them with

  391. was a reminder

  392. of the urgency

  393. with which they were

  394. to hasten from place to place.

  395. Why?

  396. Because the message

  397. is an urgent one.

  398. The ministry

  399. is an urgent one.

  400. It's not one to take casually.

  401. Your work for the kingdom of God

  402. is not a casual work.

  403. It's an urgent work.

  404. And we must go

  405. with that urgency.

  406. And we must preach

  407. with that urgency.

  408. And serve and minister

  409. with that urgency in mind.

  410. And so he gives them

  411. those instructions.

  412. Well, let's look at verses 10 and 11.

  413. The instructions given

  414. in verses 8 and 9

  415. relate to what the disciples

  416. were to take on their journey

  417. or maybe more appropriately

  418. what they were not

  419. to take on their journey.

  420. The instructions in verses 10 and 11,

  421. however,

  422. relate to how they were to behave.

  423. So what they were to take

  424. and how they were to behave.

  425. Now remember,

  426. these men were going on behalf of

  427. and in the power of Jesus.

  428. They were representatives of Christ.

  429. And there was a particular way

  430. in which they were to interact

  431. with the people

  432. to whom they would serve and minister.

  433. Think about that.

  434. They weren't going on their own mission.

  435. This was Christ's mission.

  436. They weren't representing

  437. their own kingdom.

  438. They were representing

  439. the kingdom of God.

  440. They were ambassadors for Christ.

  441. Therefore, they were going

  442. in the way that he had determined

  443. for them to go.

  444. They were to behave

  445. in the way that Jesus

  446. had commanded them to behave.

  447. And they were to do the things

  448. that Jesus had commanded them to do.

  449. Why?

  450. Because this was his mission.

  451. It's his kingdom.

  452. It's his work.

  453. And it's his power.

  454. Now think about this.

  455. Just think for a moment.

  456. Who is it that you represent

  457. in this world?

  458. You represent Christ.

  459. And the way that you live

  460. and the way that you behave

  461. and the things that you do

  462. and the way that you interact

  463. with the people in your life

  464. should be representative

  465. of your love for

  466. and your faithfulness

  467. to the lordship

  468. of Jesus Christ

  469. in your life.

  470. He gave them instructions

  471. on how to show gratitude

  472. to those who received them.

  473. And then he gave them instructions

  474. on how to pronounce judgment

  475. on those who rejected them.

  476. And both of these instructions

  477. are vital

  478. to faithful proclamation

  479. of the gospel.

  480. Look at verse 10.

  481. And he said to them,

  482. whenever you enter into a house,

  483. stay there until you depart

  484. from that place.

  485. From what I understand,

  486. local inns

  487. were often dirty

  488. and dangerous places to stay.

  489. It wasn't unusual

  490. for travelers

  491. to seek lodging

  492. in people's homes

  493. in this day and age.

  494. There was a culture

  495. of hospitality

  496. that is very different

  497. from what we're accustomed to

  498. here in our modern American context.

  499. Like, can you imagine that?

  500. You've decided to go on vacation

  501. this week

  502. and you're going to head down

  503. maybe to Myrtle Beach

  504. and you don't make a reservation

  505. at a hotel.

  506. Instead, you're just going to wait

  507. until you get there,

  508. see who you meet in the market,

  509. and see if they'll let you

  510. stay at their place.

  511. That's basically

  512. what was happening here.

  513. The inns were dangerous places.

  514. They were immoral places

  515. in a lot of instances as well.

  516. And so as these disciples

  517. were going from town to town,

  518. they had no money

  519. to pay for a room anyways.

  520. What were they to do?

  521. They were to be amongst the people

  522. and see how God would provide.

  523. Who would receive them

  524. into their home?

  525. So that's what's happening here.

  526. When Jesus says,

  527. whenever you enter a house,

  528. stay there until you depart,

  529. that's what's happening.

  530. No doubt as they

  531. proclaimed the good news of Jesus

  532. and displayed His mighty works,

  533. some people would believe

  534. and extend this courtesy to them.

  535. There were probably many nights

  536. that they slept on the ground as well.

  537. But the instruction was,

  538. whenever you are invited to stay,

  539. stay.

  540. And so whenever someone

  541. welcomed them into their home,

  542. they were to be there

  543. for the duration of their time

  544. in that town.

  545. Now, there's probably many reasons

  546. that Jesus gave this,

  547. but really I think that

  548. the essence of the command

  549. has to do with showing gratitude

  550. to the people

  551. who willingly received them.

  552. For instance,

  553. if they went into town

  554. and they found that

  555. that the Blankenship house

  556. was sufficient enough

  557. and we were willing to keep them

  558. and they stayed there

  559. for a day or two

  560. and then realized that

  561. the Dupree house

  562. was a little bit nicer

  563. and they had a better community pool

  564. and maybe even a hot tub

  565. in the backyard,

  566. you know what?

  567. We think that we're going to stay over

  568. with the Duprees.

  569. They very kindly offered

  570. and we appreciate the time

  571. that you've given us,

  572. but we're going to go stay over there

  573. because it will just be

  574. a better place, right?

  575. This is why Jesus is saying,

  576. don't do that.

  577. Don't do that.

  578. Wherever you stay, stay.

  579. They weren't to use their ministry

  580. for personal gain,

  581. as many of the false teachers

  582. were guilty of doing.

  583. Neither were they

  584. to overstay their welcome.

  585. Neither were they

  586. to use people as a stepping stone

  587. to bigger and better things.

  588. This wasn't about them.

  589. The bottom line is

  590. that the way we treat people

  591. has a direct impact

  592. on our gospel witness.

  593. The way you treat

  594. the people in your life

  595. has a direct impact

  596. on your gospel witness.

  597. Think about it for a moment.

  598. To bounce from house to house

  599. would have made it appear

  600. like the disciples

  601. were only in it for themselves.

  602. The gospel message

  603. was only a means

  604. of benefiting them personally,

  605. which we see over and over

  606. in the New Testament letters.

  607. This condemnation

  608. of false teachers

  609. that were in it for themselves.

  610. They were in it for the money.

  611. They would deceive people

  612. in order to get something

  613. from the people

  614. and then they would move on

  615. to another place

  616. and they would repeat it

  617. all over again.

  618. They used the gospel

  619. for personal gain

  620. and Jesus was instructing

  621. these men,

  622. don't do that.

  623. It would have suggested

  624. that the gospel of Jesus

  625. was exclusive

  626. to those who could provide them

  627. with better things

  628. and more comfortable accommodations.

  629. What would that have said?

  630. To the first family

  631. with which they stayed,

  632. if they were a poor family,

  633. but they were willing

  634. to provide for them

  635. as they were in their town

  636. and then they decided

  637. that as we're preaching

  638. the gospel,

  639. we appreciate what you've provided

  640. but there's a better place

  641. over here

  642. and we're going to go stay there.

  643. Now, what would that have said

  644. about the gospel

  645. to these people?

  646. That just like everything else

  647. in this society

  648. is rejecting me,

  649. I guess the gospel

  650. rejects me as well

  651. because they're more willing

  652. to go there

  653. than they are willing

  654. to come here.

  655. Jesus says,

  656. don't do that.

  657. Wherever you go,

  658. stay there.

  659. Why?

  660. Because you're to live

  661. with gratitude.

  662. You're to be focused

  663. on the gospel,

  664. treat people with respect

  665. and be content

  666. with whatever provisions

  667. God makes.

  668. It's a lesson

  669. that we all must learn

  670. as we serve the Lord.

  671. And so let's look

  672. at verse 11.

  673. If any place

  674. will not receive you

  675. and they will not

  676. listen to you.

  677. When you leave,

  678. shake off the dust

  679. that is on your feet

  680. as a testimony

  681. against them.

  682. Jews,

  683. when they had traveled

  684. outside of Israel,

  685. when they came back in

  686. from Gentile places,

  687. they went through

  688. this custom upon

  689. crossing the border

  690. where they would shake out

  691. the dirt from their garments

  692. and off of their shoes

  693. and off their feet.

  694. It was a pronouncement

  695. of judgment

  696. against the Gentile nations

  697. and it was a statement

  698. that signified

  699. they were unwilling

  700. to bring any kind

  701. of pollutant

  702. from the Gentile nations

  703. into their holy nation

  704. and into their promised land.

  705. That's what the action signified.

  706. Now this is what Jesus

  707. is telling these men

  708. to do as they preach

  709. the gospel

  710. to Jewish people

  711. in Jewish towns.

  712. When you go there

  713. and they reject you,

  714. he says,

  715. do this thing

  716. that says that

  717. they are no different

  718. than the Gentile nations

  719. that they hate

  720. and that they think

  721. are without God.

  722. This was a powerful

  723. sign of judgment.

  724. Kent Hughes said

  725. it was prophetic actually.

  726. It was a merciful

  727. prophetic act

  728. designed to make

  729. the people think deeply

  730. about their spiritual condition.

  731. It signified

  732. that the unbelieving Jews

  733. were no different

  734. than the heathen Gentiles.

  735. And in fact,

  736. because they rejected

  737. Christ and his works,

  738. they would suffer

  739. a more significant judgment

  740. perhaps

  741. than even Sodom

  742. and Gomorrah.

  743. Now,

  744. Jesus doesn't demand

  745. that every time

  746. your co-worker

  747. or friend

  748. or neighbor

  749. rejects the gospel

  750. that you shake

  751. the dirt off your clothes

  752. and kick the dust

  753. off your feet

  754. towards them.

  755. that's not what he means.

  756. But he does desire

  757. that we faithfully

  758. pronounce the judgment

  759. that will come

  760. on all people

  761. who will not receive him

  762. in faith

  763. and repentance.

  764. Some of us

  765. don't struggle so much

  766. with pronouncing

  767. the judgment.

  768. Sometimes we get

  769. the spirit of it

  770. a bit wrong.

  771. In fact,

  772. very wrong.

  773. We get so offended

  774. sometimes

  775. if you spend

  776. much time

  777. on social media

  778. or around people

  779. that maybe

  780. are antagonistic,

  781. not just in rejecting

  782. the gospel

  783. but antagonistic

  784. against it.

  785. There's sometimes

  786. a difference

  787. in the way

  788. that those people

  789. behave.

  790. And we can get

  791. so offended sometimes

  792. not because

  793. Christ is offended

  794. but because we are.

  795. We feel like

  796. we have been offended.

  797. And we don't mind

  798. to express

  799. the proclamation

  800. of judgment

  801. on them

  802. but what's behind

  803. that in our minds

  804. and in our spirit

  805. is almost a delight

  806. in the fact

  807. that they will have

  808. you almost throw it

  809. in their face

  810. like this is

  811. you're going to be

  812. judged for this.

  813. So wicked.

  814. And what's behind it

  815. is anger

  816. or frustration

  817. or offense.

  818. And that's not

  819. the disposition

  820. that Jesus

  821. was encouraging here.

  822. When we explain

  823. the judgment

  824. of God

  825. on the unsaved

  826. it's not to be

  827. with a furrowed brow

  828. but with eyes

  829. that are full

  830. of tears.

  831. God doesn't

  832. delight

  833. in the destruction

  834. of the wicked

  835. and neither should we.

  836. Nothing about

  837. the way we preach

  838. the gospel

  839. should indicate

  840. otherwise.

  841. The proclamation

  842. of judgment

  843. is not one

  844. that's to be done

  845. out of hate

  846. or out of anger

  847. it's to be done

  848. out of love

  849. and out of warning

  850. because it's true.

  851. Like I said

  852. God doesn't

  853. delight in their

  854. destruction.

  855. Why should we?

  856. But the fact

  857. remains true

  858. that all who

  859. reject Jesus

  860. as Lord

  861. and Savior

  862. will face

  863. eternal judgment.

  864. Therefore

  865. we need to

  866. proclaim the message

  867. and we need to

  868. do it out of

  869. obedience

  870. and with a heart

  871. of compassion.

  872. in hopes

  873. that the Lord

  874. will use that

  875. message

  876. to draw people

  877. to himself.

  878. So that was a lot

  879. of time on the

  880. instructions.

  881. Let's quickly finish

  882. with the pattern

  883. that they were

  884. to follow.

  885. Okay?

  886. Pattern of ministry

  887. to follow.

  888. Look at verses

  889. 12 and 13.

  890. So they went out

  891. and proclaimed

  892. that people

  893. should repent.

  894. They cast out

  895. many demons

  896. and anointed

  897. with oil

  898. those who were

  899. sick

  900. and healed them.

  901. And so in

  902. verse 7

  903. Mark summarizes

  904. Jesus'

  905. commission

  906. to these 12

  907. and then

  908. here in

  909. verses 12

  910. and 13

  911. he closes

  912. with another

  913. summary

  914. of how

  915. they actually

  916. fulfilled that

  917. commission.

  918. And what's

  919. abundantly clear

  920. is that they

  921. followed the

  922. pattern

  923. that was

  924. modeled by

  925. Jesus.

  926. They didn't

  927. come up with

  928. a new and

  929. better way

  930. to do

  931. ministry.

  932. Of course

  933. God doesn't

  934. condemn

  935. innovation.

  936. That's not

  937. what I mean.

  938. It's just

  939. they stuck

  940. to the

  941. essentials

  942. of what

  943. Jesus

  944. commanded

  945. them to

  946. do

  947. and what

  948. he modeled.

  949. And that

  950. consisted

  951. of two

  952. things

  953. that we've

  954. said over

  955. and over.

  956. Preaching

  957. the gospel

  958. and performing

  959. his works.

  960. That's what

  961. they did.

  962. They followed

  963. his pattern

  964. and they

  965. trusted

  966. his power.

  967. And that's

  968. our mission

  969. as well.

  970. It's that

  971. simple.

  972. Preach

  973. his words

  974. and do

  975. his works.

  976. Preach

  977. his word

  978. and do

  979. his works.

  980. We know

  981. that Jesus'

  982. primary objective

  983. everywhere he

  984. traveled was

  985. to proclaim

  986. the gospel

  987. message.

  988. Sometimes we

  989. get that

  990. backwards and

  991. we think

  992. because his

  993. miracles are

  994. so fantastic

  995. we think

  996. that that

  997. was really

  998. his goal

  999. and that

  1000. wasn't

  1001. his primary

  1002. objective.

  1003. There were

  1004. places that

  1005. Jesus went

  1006. where he

  1007. did no

  1008. miraculous

  1009. works.

  1010. But there

  1011. was never

  1012. a place

  1013. Jesus went

  1014. that he

  1015. did not

  1016. preach the

  1017. truth of

  1018. the gospel.

  1019. That was

  1020. his purpose.

  1021. That's what

  1022. he did.

  1023. In fact,

  1024. if you'll

  1025. think back

  1026. to Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  1027. chapter 1

  1028. and verse

  1029. 38,

  1030. he said to

  1031. them after

  1032. the masses

  1033. had come

  1034. to be healed

  1035. and the

  1036. disciples were

  1037. excited,

  1038. what was it

  1039. Jesus said?

  1040. Let us go

  1041. to other

  1042. towns that

  1043. I may

  1044. preach there

  1045. also for

  1046. that is

  1047. why I

  1048. came.

  1049. That's

  1050. his objective.

  1051. What's

  1052. our first

  1053. objective?

  1054. Preach

  1055. the gospel.

  1056. And when I

  1057. say preach,

  1058. I don't mean

  1059. finding a

  1060. platform

  1061. somewhere.

  1062. I mean

  1063. share the

  1064. gospel.

  1065. Talk about

  1066. Jesus.

  1067. Share

  1068. with people

  1069. that Jesus

  1070. will save

  1071. them if they

  1072. will turn

  1073. and believe.

  1074. And notice

  1075. the emphasis

  1076. that Mark

  1077. places on

  1078. this message.

  1079. Look again

  1080. at verse

  1081. 12.

  1082. And they

  1083. went out

  1084. and preached

  1085. that men

  1086. should what?

  1087. Repent.

  1088. Repent.

  1089. Plenty of

  1090. people today

  1091. want to

  1092. preach the

  1093. message of

  1094. acceptance.

  1095. And yes,

  1096. God is

  1097. accepting of

  1098. all who

  1099. will come

  1100. to him.

  1101. Jesus said

  1102. it, we

  1103. quote it

  1104. all the

  1105. time.

  1106. Whoever

  1107. comes to

  1108. me, I

  1109. will never

  1110. cast away.

  1111. And it's

  1112. true.

  1113. There doesn't

  1114. seem to be

  1115. many that

  1116. want to

  1117. preach the

  1118. message of

  1119. repentance.

  1120. But if you

  1121. notice in

  1122. Mark's gospel,

  1123. that's the

  1124. message that

  1125. recurs over

  1126. and over

  1127. and over

  1128. and over

  1129. beginning with

  1130. John the

  1131. Baptist,

  1132. repent,

  1133. and then going

  1134. on to

  1135. Jesus himself,

  1136. repent and

  1137. believe the

  1138. good news.

  1139. And now on

  1140. to his

  1141. disciples,

  1142. they preach

  1143. that all

  1144. men should

  1145. repent.

  1146. And if

  1147. we're faithful

  1148. to the

  1149. gospel message,

  1150. we must

  1151. also call

  1152. people to

  1153. repent.

  1154. Because without

  1155. repentance,

  1156. there is no

  1157. salvation.

  1158. Repentance of

  1159. our sin,

  1160. a turning

  1161. away of

  1162. our sin,

  1163. a turning

  1164. away of

  1165. everything else

  1166. that we

  1167. have pursued

  1168. in life

  1169. in order

  1170. to live

  1171. and believe

  1172. wholly in

  1173. Christ as

  1174. Lord and

  1175. Savior.

  1176. And then they

  1177. performed his

  1178. works.

  1179. They went and

  1180. they anointed

  1181. some with oil

  1182. and they healed

  1183. them and they

  1184. cast out demons

  1185. and it's important

  1186. for us to realize

  1187. here that this was

  1188. not a universal

  1189. thing that was

  1190. given to these

  1191. men.

  1192. It's not like

  1193. they all of a

  1194. sudden had this

  1195. magical experience

  1196. where no matter

  1197. where they went,

  1198. they would be able

  1199. to do these

  1200. things.

  1201. No, this was a

  1202. particular empowerment

  1203. for these men

  1204. at this time.

  1205. There's even other

  1206. times in the

  1207. Gospels where they

  1208. could not do

  1209. these things.

  1210. So it's not that

  1211. this was a

  1212. universal thing

  1213. and we should

  1214. not come to

  1215. this expecting

  1216. that God has

  1217. given us power

  1218. over demons

  1219. and that he has

  1220. given us power

  1221. to anoint people

  1222. with oil and

  1223. heal the sick.

  1224. That's not the

  1225. point.

  1226. The point here

  1227. is that they

  1228. are to do

  1229. the works

  1230. of Christ

  1231. in opposing

  1232. evil

  1233. and doing

  1234. good.

  1235. Opposing

  1236. evil and

  1237. doing good

  1238. and that's

  1239. what they

  1240. did.

  1241. They went

  1242. from place

  1243. to place

  1244. and they

  1245. followed the

  1246. pattern that

  1247. Jesus had

  1248. given and

  1249. it's a pattern

  1250. we need to

  1251. follow.

  1252. James tells

  1253. us in James

    James 1 chapter mention

  1254. chapter 1

  1255. religion that

  1256. is pure and

  1257. undefiled before

  1258. God the

  1259. father is this

  1260. to visit the

  1261. orphans and

  1262. widows in their

  1263. affliction and

  1264. to keep oneself

  1265. unstained from

  1266. the world.

  1267. What is that

  1268. all about?

  1269. Opposing evil

  1270. and doing

  1271. good.

  1272. To earn our

  1273. salvation?

  1274. Of course

  1275. not.

  1276. You can't do

  1277. enough good and

  1278. oppose enough

  1279. evil to be

  1280. saved.

  1281. Doesn't work

  1282. like that.

  1283. But for those

  1284. who have

  1285. Christ he

  1286. gives the

  1287. power as he

  1288. sends us to

  1289. preach the

  1290. gospel and to

  1291. do his works

  1292. and through

  1293. those works

  1294. we show his

  1295. love and his

  1296. faithfulness.

  1297. Which is what

  1298. John was getting

  1299. on about in

  1300. chapter 3 of

  1301. his first

  1302. letter.

  1303. By this we

  1304. know love.

  1305. How?

  1306. That he laid

  1307. down his life

  1308. for us and

  1309. we ought to

  1310. lay down our

  1311. lives for the

  1312. brothers.

  1313. But if anyone

  1314. has the world's

  1315. good and sees

  1316. his brother in

  1317. need yet closes

  1318. his heart against

  1319. them how does

  1320. God's love abide

  1321. in him?

  1322. Little children

  1323. let us not love

  1324. in word or

  1325. talk but in

  1326. deed and in

  1327. truth.

  1328. What's that all

  1329. about?

  1330. Opposing evil

  1331. and doing good.

  1332. He said I

  1333. don't really

  1334. know what all

  1335. this has to

  1336. do with me.

  1337. It has

  1338. everything to

  1339. do with you

  1340. if you're a

  1341. believer.

  1342. Because you

  1343. have the same

  1344. commission to

  1345. fulfill.

  1346. To be with

  1347. Christ and to

  1348. go for Christ.

  1349. And you have

  1350. instructions to

  1351. obey.

  1352. To depend on

  1353. him wholly for

  1354. your provision.

  1355. to treat

  1356. people the way

  1357. that Christ

  1358. treated people

  1359. and to

  1360. proclaim the

  1361. message the

  1362. way he

  1363. proclaimed the

  1364. message.

  1365. And then he's

  1366. also given us a

  1367. great model and

  1368. pattern to

  1369. follow.

  1370. In fact it's

  1371. not really an

  1372. option.

  1373. If we're going

  1374. to be obedient

  1375. to Christ, if

  1376. we're going to be

  1377. obedient to this

  1378. commission, we're

  1379. going to have to

  1380. fulfill it in the

  1381. way that he

  1382. designed for us to

  1383. fulfill it.

  1384. Which is simple.

  1385. Preach his

  1386. words and do

  1387. his works.

  1388. And so the

  1389. questions are

  1390. these.

  1391. Are we

  1392. fulfilling our

  1393. mission?

  1394. Are we

  1395. following the

  1396. instructions?

  1397. And are we

  1398. committed to his

  1399. pattern?
