  1. Have you ever noticed how it's possible to be amazed by the miracles of Jesus and still be

  2. completely oblivious to their true significance? Not only is that a possibility, but I think that

  3. it's actually more common than what we would hope it to be. Just think of all of these people that

  4. Jesus has encountered in the gospels up to this point and beyond. Thousands of people flocked to

  5. Jesus and his disciples wherever he went, but very few of them actually believed and followed him.

  6. They were eyewitnesses to his power, but they were utterly ignorant of his person.

  7. They loved to see what he could do, but they completely missed who he was. And even the

  8. people that were closest to Jesus, his 12 disciples in particular, still struggled to understand the

  9. significance of Jesus's identity and purpose. And despite all that they had seen, despite all that

  10. they had even partaken in as a result of the power and authority of Jesus, the disciples generally

  11. misunderstood what all of that was about. And such is the case here at the conclusion of chapter six.

  12. And it's for this reason that this miracle of Jesus walking on water of which probably all of us are so

  13. familiar is actually one of the most significant moments in the life of the disciples as they walked

  14. with Jesus. Now that might be a bit of a hard statement, but I think it's true because we look at all,

  15. all that they experienced with Jesus clearly the most significant moment was when the resurrected Christ

  16. appeared to these men. But this was such a massive turning point for these men in their acknowledgement of who

  17. Jesus was and they're beginning to understand exactly what his purpose was in all of this. They were following him in

  18. faith, but they just weren't getting it. All the things that they saw and experienced, it wasn't clicking. They

  19. weren't bringing these connections together to really understand what Jesus was doing until this point.

  20. And even at this point, they didn't quite grasp it, but something significant changed as we'll get to in

  21. beginning to understand this. And so when we come to the miracle of the walking on the water,

  22. it's not just meant to amaze us that Jesus did this really incredible thing, but I really think that we

  23. should view this particular story and miracle as a turning point in the life of the 12 disciples.

  24. We need to understand this event in tandem with the feeding of the 5,000, which is what we studied

  25. last Sunday. You will have difficulty understanding the purpose of Jesus walking on water without

  26. understanding first the purpose of Jesus feeding the 5,000. It's really not two different stories. It's

  27. really one story. This walking on the water is really the conclusion to the story of Jesus feeding

  28. the 5,000. When you go to the Gospels, Luke is the only one that doesn't cover Jesus walking on water,

  29. but all four Gospels cover the feeding of the 5,000. Every time the walking on the water is mentioned,

  30. it is always, always directly linked to Jesus feeding all of those people in the desolate place near

  31. Bethsaida. And so you can't understand the two apart from one another.

  32. It's not just for continuity of narrative. It's not just about that. There's a reason that these two

  33. are linked together. And Mark, I think, lays out two particular reasons here that we want to cover

  34. today. The first one is this, that in verse 45, we see this urgency with which Jesus sent the disciples

  35. away. So he does this great miracle. He feeds all of these people. And then the very next verse,

  36. we don't see anything else happening except for Jesus hurriedly, urgently making sure that his

  37. disciples don't stay around. He's pushing them away. Go, get out of here, go get in the boat, go to the

  38. other side, and I'll catch up with you later. There's an urgency to what Jesus is doing here. So the question

  39. is, what's happening? What was happening in Bethsaida or near Bethsaida that Jesus had to so

  40. urgently get these disciples away? So it's not just about this continuity and narrative telling story in a

  41. particular order. There's a reason that these two are being connected. The second one is this. We read

  42. it a moment ago. Look again with me at, what is it, verse 52. They were amazed, but why were they amazed?

  43. Mark circles back around to the feeding of the 5,000. He says they were amazed because their hearts were

  44. hardened due to them not understanding what the feeding of the 5,000 was all about. They didn't

  45. understand the loaves. They hadn't considered that. Their hearts were hardened, which is a pretty

  46. important statement when we come to Mark's gospel. And that's why things weren't clicking for them before.

  47. That's why they were astounded. So after he gets all the way through this story of what Jesus has done,

  48. he circles back around. And so we have to ask that question, why was Jesus sending these disciples

  49. away with urgency? And what was it that they didn't get? What was it about this feeding of the 5,000 that

  50. wasn't clicking for these men that Jesus had to go walk on water in order to make it click? Because

  51. that's essentially what's happening. They've missed something massive. So Jesus, in order to demonstrate

  52. something very specific to these men, walks on water. And that's what becomes the turning point for the men.

  53. And it's these questions that I hope that we can answer this morning as we go through this chapter.

  54. Now, remember, we're coming to the close of this chapter that has focused specifically on the

  55. disciples. All of Mark's gospel is about Jesus. All of the Bible is about Jesus. But Mark is giving us

  56. this picture of Jesus and telling these stories of Jesus in Mark chapter 6 through the lens of his

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  57. disciples, their training, and what it was that was going on in their minds.

  58. Let me ask you, when you got saved, when you were converted to Christ, did everything that you read

  59. in the Bible and everything that you had ever heard about the Bible just all of a sudden just click,

  60. and you just had it, and you were just like, you're a doctor of theology now, it all just makes sense?

  61. Of course not, right? Of course not.

  62. The character of God is infinite.

  63. You will never, you will never understand it all. You will never grasp it all.

  64. I was talking to Caitlin and Michaela this morning about a song I was listening to this week.

  65. It's a City of Light song called I Want to Know You.

  66. And there's a bridge in the song, it says, it says like wave after wave on the ocean,

  67. like all of the sand on the shore, your beauty and glory are endless. Oh Jesus, I must know you more.

  68. And I think the more that we actually begin to understand the Bible, and the more we begin to

  69. actually see who Christ is, we realize how little of Christ we actually understand.

  70. And for a believer, it should put this desire, this fire in your heart.

  71. Lord, I just want to know you more. I want to know more of who you are.

  72. I want to understand this more.

  73. So now let's put ourselves in the disciples' shoes.

  74. Yes, they've seen some amazing things.

  75. They had done some amazing things through the power of Christ.

  76. But they're not any different than us.

  77. Didn't mean that everything just clicked with them all of a sudden.

  78. There was a progression to their understanding.

  79. They grew in grace the same way that we grow in grace.

  80. And it wasn't that they didn't have faith.

  81. It wasn't that they weren't regenerate.

  82. It wasn't any of that.

  83. It was that this was just another step in their walk of faith.

  84. And it ended up being a monumental moment for them in this time that they were following Christ.

  85. So if you care to keep an outline, maybe next to verses 45 and 46 in those scripture journals,

  86. you'll write this, messianic misunderstanding.

  87. Messianic misunderstanding or misunderstanding the Messiah or however you'd want to phrase that.

  88. It doesn't really matter to me.

  89. But it's in verses 45 and 46 where we're going to see this.

  90. And one of the recurring problems with the crowds that followed Jesus

  91. was that they continually misunderstood the purpose of the Messiah.

  92. It wasn't necessarily that they denied Jesus as being a messianic figure.

  93. I think that was the point in the crowds following him is that they suspected that he was indeed

  94. at least a Messiah from God.

  95. What they misunderstood is exactly what that meant and exactly what the purpose of the Messiah would be.

  96. They expected this political leader, this military hero that would deliver the nation from oppression

  97. and would restore it to a former glory, like the glory of David's kingdom.

  98. And even those who had followed Jesus expected a physical kingdom that would be established in their lifetime.

  99. Now, Isaiah had prophesied that the coming of the Messiah would cause a few things to happen.

  100. That deaf people would hear, that blind people would see, that lame people would walk,

  101. that good news would be brought, that blessing would come upon the nation.

  102. And what have we seen Jesus doing as he's going throughout Galilee in Mark's gospel?

  103. He's preaching good news.

  104. He's bringing blessing to the nation.

  105. The deaf can hear, the blind can see, the lame can walk.

  106. All of these things that the prophets had foretold would be true of the Messiah are true in Jesus.

  107. And the crowds are starting to see that.

  108. They're seeing, okay, this might be the one.

  109. What they misunderstood is what the one was intending to do.

  110. But then Jesus even admitted that he was the one.

  111. Remember this from Luke chapter four.

  112. You don't have to turn there.

  113. Maybe write it in the margins of your notes and you can reflect on it later.

  114. Luke chapter four, Jesus's first visit to Nazareth after his ministry had begun.

  115. And he goes and he's allowed to speak in the synagogue.

  116. And it says that in the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him.

  117. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written.

  118. The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

  119. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind,

  120. to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  121. And Jesus rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, sat down,

  122. and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

  123. And he began to say this,

  124. Today, this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.

  125. Okay, Jesus was clear.

  126. Sometimes we wonder that.

  127. Why wasn't Jesus more clear?

  128. That's pretty clear.

  129. And that's early on in his ministry.

  130. He's reading these prophets and he's saying,

  131. I am that one.

  132. And so it's not that the people didn't think he was the Messiah or a Messiah.

  133. It's that they misunderstood what his whole purpose was.

  134. Remember John the Baptist?

  135. Before he was executed, he's in the prison.

  136. And remember, he's confused.

  137. Because even John the Baptist thought that Jesus,

  138. though he knew Jesus to be the Lamb of God taking away the sin of the world,

  139. he thought Jesus was bringing a physical kingdom then in his lifetime.

  140. And he's confused because he is sitting in the prison.

  141. And he wasn't thinking that that was going to be a part of the plan of the Messiah

  142. and of his cousin, Jesus.

  143. He didn't think that's what was going to happen.

  144. And remember, he sends some of his own followers to Jesus.

  145. And they say,

  146. John wanted us to ask you,

  147. Are you the one or should we look for another?

  148. And what was it that Jesus said?

  149. You can read it in Matthew 11 or Matthew 14.

  150. One of those passages has this in context.

  151. And Jesus says,

  152. Jesus heals a few folks in front of John's disciples.

  153. And he does all these works.

  154. And then he turns to those disciples.

  155. And he says,

  156. Go and tell John that the deaf hear,

  157. and the blind see,

  158. and the lame walk,

  159. and good news is preached to the people.

  160. In other words,

  161. John, you know,

  162. you may not understand what I'm doing,

  163. but you know I'm the one to do it.

  164. So go tell John,

  165. Don't worry.

  166. Things are fine.

  167. So even the people that were closest to him

  168. didn't quite get it at this point.

  169. But he was doing all of these things.

  170. So with that in mind,

  171. look at verse 45.

  172. Immediately,

  173. I'm reading from the ESV now.

  174. Immediately,

  175. he made his disciples get into the boat

  176. and go before him to the other side,

  177. to Bethsaida,

  178. while he dismissed the crowd.

  179. So there's this misunderstanding.

  180. People aren't grasping exactly,

  181. even the disciples aren't grasping exactly

  182. what Jesus' purpose is.

  183. Something is now happening on the side of this hill,

  184. and Jesus forces these disciples to leave.

  185. You have to get out of here.

  186. Go get in the boat and go away.

  187. The feeding of the 5,000 had taken place,

  188. as we talked about last week,

  189. in a desolate place.

  190. It was in the region of Bethsaida,

  191. which is northeast Galilee.

  192. Probably,

  193. there's some confusion

  194. over what's happening in direction.

  195. There's no reason to be confused.

  196. Jesus is sending them away

  197. to go to the other side.

  198. Okay?

  199. He's sending them to go back to the other side,

  200. probably around the shoreline,

  201. the way that they had come.

  202. But why?

  203. Well,

  204. this particular area

  205. was known to be a stronghold

  206. for the zealot movement.

  207. You'll probably recognize that term

  208. because one of Jesus' disciples

  209. was a zealot.

  210. His name was Simon.

  211. In one passage,

  212. he's called Simon the Canaanite,

  213. which literally means zealot.

  214. That's what he was.

  215. He was a part of this zealot movement.

  216. Now,

  217. this tells you something

  218. about Jesus' mindset

  219. toward this group.

  220. Simon repented of

  221. and left that group

  222. in order to follow Jesus.

  223. Now,

  224. that was a messianic group.

  225. They cared about Israel.

  226. They cared about the Messiah.

  227. They cared about all those things.

  228. But that didn't mean

  229. that they had it all together.

  230. It didn't mean

  231. that they were thinking rightly

  232. about who Jesus is

  233. and what the Savior would do.

  234. In fact,

  235. they were a military group.

  236. They were hiding in the hills,

  237. training in order to kill,

  238. in order that they might free Israel

  239. from the bondage

  240. that they had experienced in Rome.

  241. So they were freedom fighters.

  242. They were revolutionaries.

  243. And what they expected

  244. the Messiah to do

  245. was to be a military leader

  246. that would lead them

  247. in their training

  248. in a fight,

  249. a physical fight,

  250. against Rome.

  251. Now,

  252. because this is the place

  253. where this feeding took place,

  254. some have suggested

  255. that this crowd

  256. was made up

  257. predominantly of zealots.

  258. He's in zealot territory.

  259. All four Gospels

  260. emphasized

  261. that it was 5,000 men.

  262. We know that there were women

  263. and children there too,

  264. but the emphasis is on the men.

  265. Could it be

  266. that this is basically

  267. a group of 5,000 zealots

  268. that have gathered

  269. on the hillside

  270. that now have witnessed

  271. with their own eyes

  272. Jesus do an incredible miracle?

  273. And now they think,

  274. okay,

  275. the Messiah is here.

  276. We've been training for this.

  277. It's time to go fight.

  278. And there's this messianic fervor

  279. that's misunderstood

  280. because they didn't really understand

  281. who Jesus was.

  282. And John tells us

  283. that they attempted

  284. to make Jesus a king

  285. by force.

  286. In fact,

  287. John chapter 6,

    John 6:14

  288. verse 14,

  289. when the people saw the sign

  290. that he had done,

  291. they said,

  292. this is indeed the prophet

  293. who is to come into the world.

  294. Perceiving then

  295. that they were about to come

  296. and take him by force

  297. to make him a king,

  298. Jesus withdrew again

  299. to the mountain by himself.

  300. So why is it

  301. that Jesus is sending

  302. the disciples away

  303. in such a hurried fashion?

  304. Because the disciples

  305. generally agreed

  306. with the messianic expectations

  307. of the people.

  308. And they were probably

  309. getting caught up

  310. in the zeal of the crowd.

  311. Zealots are ready

  312. to take Jesus by force,

  313. force him to be their leader.

  314. They're going to go

  315. fight against Rome.

  316. And here's the disciples

  317. on the other end

  318. who are gung-ho for that.

  319. That's what they thought

  320. this was all about.

  321. They thought,

  322. yes,

  323. this is it.

  324. We're going to be

  325. his right-hand men.

  326. And they're getting excited.

  327. And Jesus says,

  328. no,

  329. you need to get out of here.

  330. It's time for you

  331. to leave.

  332. The language in verse 45

  333. indicates that Jesus

  334. had to force them out,

  335. that they were reluctant

  336. to leave.

  337. And now we begin

  338. to understand exactly

  339. why this was such an issue

  340. with the disciples.

  341. After everything

  342. they had witnessed Jesus do,

  343. after Jesus calling

  344. them to be apostles

  345. that were going to

  346. continue his kingdom,

  347. they were going to

  348. take his kingdom

  349. across the world,

  350. they didn't even understand

  351. what that kingdom was.

  352. They didn't even understand

  353. what that purpose

  354. was going to be.

  355. They were susceptible

  356. to the political enthusiasm

  357. of the crowd.

  358. So Jesus commanded them

  359. to sail to the other side.

  360. And it's just a reminder.

  361. There's always a danger

  362. in getting swept away

  363. by error

  364. when we fail to realize

  365. exactly who Jesus is

  366. and what he's meant to do.

  367. The errors that we can

  368. so easily get caught up in

  369. as Christians

  370. always come back

  371. to a misunderstanding

  372. of who Jesus is

  373. and what his purpose is

  374. should be mindful.

  375. Look at verse 46.

  376. After he had taken leave

  377. of them,

  378. he went up on the mountain

  379. to pray.

  380. It's always fascinating

  381. to consider

  382. the prayer life of Jesus.

  383. It's mysterious.

  384. Why would Jesus need to pray?

  385. I understand why I need to pray.

  386. Because I'm weak.

  387. That's part of our prayer, right?

  388. It's a surrender.

  389. It's, Lord, I can't do this.

  390. I need you.

  391. I need you to work on my behalf.

  392. I need you in this moment.

  393. But why would Jesus do this?

  394. It's mysterious to think about it.

  395. It pictures the intimate communion

  396. in the Trinity,

  397. the unity that existed

  398. between the Father

  399. and the Son

  400. and the Spirit.

  401. But while we often see Jesus

  402. praying in the Gospels,

  403. these private times

  404. of prayer in solitude,

  405. particularly in these

  406. mountainous places,

  407. we see these names

  408. specifically through the Gospels.

  409. They're always connected

  410. in some way

  411. to difficulty

  412. and temptation.

  413. Now think about this

  414. for just a moment.

  415. When's the first time

  416. that we see Jesus

  417. in this type of prayer?

  418. Well, it was right

  419. after his baptism.

  420. He was led of the Spirit

  421. into the wilderness

  422. for 40 days and 40 nights.

  423. And as he's praying and fasting,

  424. what is happening?

  425. For 40 days and 40 nights,

  426. he's being tempted.

  427. And what were those temptations about?

  428. Satan's,

  429. the goal of Satan's temptations

  430. of Jesus

  431. was to get him to go

  432. against the will of the Father.

  433. That was the purpose.

  434. Whether it was turning

  435. the bread into food

  436. or the stones into bread,

  437. or whether it was jumping off

  438. the pinnacle of the temple

  439. and having angels bear him up

  440. before he falls on the rocks,

  441. or whether it was to bow to Satan

  442. in order to gain the kingdom,

  443. all of those things

  444. were really for one purpose.

  445. Go against the will of the Father.

  446. Those were the temptations.

  447. Okay?

  448. When's the next time

  449. we see him being tempted?

  450. Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  451. This explosive popularity

  452. all of a sudden in Capernaum.

  453. Remember,

  454. all these people are coming

  455. all night to Jesus.

  456. Jesus slips away

  457. in the middle of the night

  458. to go pray,

  459. and his disciples hunt him down.

  460. And what'd they say?

  461. We need to go back

  462. because it's happening.

  463. It's happening, Jesus.

  464. And what does Jesus say?

  465. No,

  466. we're going to go

  467. to other towns now

  468. so that I can teach them

  469. because that's why I've come.

  470. And so this moment of prayer

  471. in Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  472. what is it?

  473. It's a reaffirming

  474. of the will of the Father.

  475. And the next day,

  476. he doesn't go back

  477. to follow the expectations

  478. of the disciples.

  479. He follows the expectations

  480. of the Father,

  481. and he goes,

  482. and he stays on track

  483. with what his purpose was.

  484. We're going to see it again

  485. the night of his arrest.

  486. He's going to go

  487. to the Garden of Gethsemane,

  488. and he's going to go

  489. a little further

  490. than the rest of them

  491. in this solitude at night.

  492. And what is it

  493. that he's going to pray

  494. in a moment of temptation,

  495. probably?

  496. He's going to pray,

  497. Father,

  498. not my will,

  499. but your will be done.

  500. And then we see him again

  501. on the mountain praying

  502. right after a group of zealots

  503. had tried to get him

  504. to circumvent

  505. the will of the Father,

  506. which was the cross.

  507. He could have had

  508. the leadership.

  509. He could have had

  510. the kingdom.

  511. He could have had

  512. the things apart

  513. from the cross,

  514. but that wasn't

  515. the will of the Father.

  516. And so he goes

  517. and he prays.

  518. It's important here

  519. because it's perfect

  520. as the Son of God was

  521. and is.

  522. He felt temptation

  523. in a way

  524. that we can never understand.

  525. Yet he never sinned

  526. even one time.

  527. Not one time.

  528. In fact,

  529. Hebrews reminds us of this.

  530. We do not have a priest

  531. who is unable

  532. to sympathize

  533. with our weakness,

  534. but one who in every respect

  535. has been tempted

  536. as we are,

  537. yet without sin.

  538. Do you understand

  539. the importance of this?

  540. That Jesus couldn't be

  541. the Savior

  542. if he wasn't sinless.

  543. but he is sinless.

  544. He never went

  545. with the temptation.

  546. He never gave in

  547. to the messianic

  548. expectations

  549. of the people.

  550. Last night,

  551. Ashlyn and I

  552. were talking about this

  553. in a way.

  554. We were talking about this

  555. on the couch.

  556. I can't remember

  557. the context

  558. of what we were saying,

  559. but we were talking

  560. about how easy it is

  561. to worry

  562. about future sin.

  563. We want to please

  564. the Lord,

  565. don't we?

  566. We get worried sometimes

  567. that I don't want

  568. to mess up

  569. and I don't want

  570. to fall so badly

  571. that I'm alone

  572. and I feel distant

  573. from God

  574. and all of those

  575. kinds of things.

  576. That was kind of

  577. the context

  578. of the conversation

  579. that Ashlyn and I

  580. were having.

  581. We had to bring it

  582. back to the gospel

  583. because my acceptance

  584. with the Father

  585. is not on the basis

  586. of whether or not

  587. I can keep all the stuff.

  588. Whether or not

  589. he's close to me

  590. and I'm close to him

  591. is not about

  592. how good I can be.

  593. It's not about

  594. my righteousness.

  595. It's about the righteousness

  596. of Christ

  597. because if my acceptance

  598. is based on how well

  599. I can keep up

  600. this Christian thing,

  601. then I'm never

  602. going to be good enough.

  603. I'm never going

  604. to feel accepted.

  605. I'm never going

  606. to be loved

  607. to the Father,

  608. but that's not

  609. what it is.

  610. He doesn't look at me

  611. for how good I am

  612. or how well

  613. I can keep all the stuff.

  614. He looks at me

  615. for the righteousness

  616. that is his son.

  617. Perfection.

  618. Because the sinless

  619. Savior died,

  620. my sinful soul

  621. is counted free

  622. for God the just

  623. is satisfied

  624. to look on him

  625. and pardon me.

  626. And what is this

  627. all about in this prayer?

  628. Jesus is reaffirming

  629. his commitment

  630. to the will of the Father.

  631. He will not sin.

  632. He will not give

  633. into temptation

  634. and praise God

  635. that he didn't

  636. because it's only

  637. due to his sinlessness

  638. as our Savior

  639. that we can actually

  640. be saved.

  641. He's not about,

  642. look,

  643. you need to free yourself

  644. from this idea

  645. that I'm going

  646. to lose something,

  647. whether it be

  648. my salvation

  649. or whether it be

  650. my closeness to God

  651. if I don't keep

  652. all the rules

  653. and I don't do

  654. all the stuff

  655. and I'm just so worried

  656. that I'm going

  657. to mess up.

  658. And if it wasn't

  659. about how good you were

  660. to be saved,

  661. it's not going to be

  662. about how good you are

  663. to stay saved.

  664. And it's not going

  665. to be how good you are

  666. to feel saved.

  667. It's not any of that.

  668. It's the righteousness

  669. of Christ.

  670. What a freeing gospel

  671. he gives us.

  672. It's about him.

  673. Now we haven't even got

  674. to the walking

  675. on the water part.

  676. We need to probably

  677. get there, don't we?

  678. Write this down

  679. in the margins.

  680. Divine revelation.

  681. Divine revelation.

  682. This is verses 47 to 51.

  683. Let's look at verse 47.

  684. And when evening came,

  685. the boat was out

  686. on the sea

  687. and he was alone

  688. on the land

  689. and he saw that

  690. they were making

  691. headway painfully

  692. for the wind

  693. was against them.

  694. Now we've noted

  695. in the past

  696. about storms

  697. that tend to come

  698. over the Sea of Galilee

  699. in a sudden fashion.

  700. And the disciples

  701. had actually feared

  702. for their lives.

  703. I think it was

  704. at the end

  705. of chapter 4

  706. where they had

  707. feared for their lives

  708. during such a storm.

  709. Another storm

  710. has developed

  711. as Jesus

  712. has sent them

  713. away

  714. on the lake.

  715. Mark's language

  716. is actually

  717. a little different

  718. this time though.

  719. It's not that

  720. they were in danger

  721. as much

  722. as they were

  723. miserable

  724. here in this passage.

  725. There's no indication

  726. that the boat

  727. was falling apart

  728. like before.

  729. They weren't terrified

  730. in this moment

  731. for their lives.

  732. They were just going

  733. through a really

  734. difficult time.

  735. They just couldn't

  736. make any progress.

  737. It's not that

  738. they were going

  739. backwards.

  740. It's not that

  741. it's not that

  742. they were falling

  743. apart.

  744. They weren't

  745. drowning.

  746. It's just that

  747. everything was

  748. against them

  749. in this moment

  750. and they couldn't

  751. make any progress

  752. because of this storm

  753. so that they're

  754. really miserable.

  755. They're miserable.

  756. They're toiling painfully

  757. to row

  758. and they're not

  759. actually getting

  760. anywhere.

  761. And ironically

  762. they were in that

  763. troubling predicament

  764. because of obedience.

  765. Right?

  766. We often think

  767. of it that way.

  768. We think well

  769. if I'm obedient

  770. to the Lord

  771. then blessing will come.

  772. Yeah and often

  773. it does.

  774. Sometimes you're

  775. obedient to the Lord

  776. and you just get

  777. more miserable.

  778. That's what's

  779. happening with

  780. the disciples here.

  781. Jesus says

  782. listen you guys

  783. need to go to the boat

  784. and you need to go

  785. to the other side

  786. knowing full well

  787. that they were

  788. going to struggle

  789. all night long.

  790. I mean it's just

  791. going to be a pain

  792. all night long.

  793. Kent Hughes said

  794. imagine what

  795. disobedience

  796. could have gotten

  797. these men that night.

  798. And we think

  799. obedience brings

  800. blessing.

  801. Disobedience

  802. brings problems.

  803. But that might not

  804. have actually been

  805. the case at least

  806. not immediately here.

  807. If they had

  808. disobeyed

  809. they probably

  810. would have had

  811. a nice place

  812. to stay for the night.

  813. Could have

  814. sheltered from the storm.

  815. Perhaps they would

  816. have had a host

  817. that fed them

  818. a good meal.

  819. Perhaps they could

  820. have amazed

  821. some people

  822. with the stories

  823. of what Jesus

  824. had done

  825. in their sight

  826. and all these

  827. kinds of things.

  828. They might have

  829. had actually

  830. a pretty good night

  831. had they disobeyed

  832. the Lord.

  833. But they would

  834. have missed out.

  835. They would have

  836. missed out

  837. on this monumental

  838. moment

  839. in their walk

  840. with Christ.

  841. sometimes

  842. Jesus

  843. sends us

  844. through a storm

  845. so that he

  846. might reveal

  847. himself more

  848. fully

  849. in the storm.

  850. Sometimes

  851. he sends us

  852. through a storm

  853. in order to

  854. reveal himself

  855. more fully

  856. in that storm.

  857. He knew

  858. where he was

  859. sending them

  860. and he knew

  861. what he was

  862. going to do

  863. and their

  864. obedience

  865. brought them

  866. hardship

  867. but it

  868. actually

  869. ended up

  870. being the

  871. greatest

  872. blessing

  873. that they

  874. could have

  875. experienced

  876. on that

  877. night.

  878. Notice

  879. Jesus

  880. was fully

  881. aware

  882. of

  883. everything

  884. going on.

  885. They

  886. couldn't

  887. see him

  888. but he

  889. could see

  890. them.

  891. John 6

  892. tells us

  893. they were

  894. three or

  895. four miles

  896. out in

  897. the middle

  898. of the

  899. lake

  900. at this

  901. point.

  902. It's the

  903. middle of

  904. the night.

  905. There's a

  906. storm.

  907. Nobody's

  908. going to

  909. stand on

  910. the seashore

  911. and be able

  912. to see this

  913. boat out

  914. there.

  915. It just

  916. wouldn't

  917. have been

  918. possible.

  919. What's

  920. Mark telling

  921. us here?

  922. It's not

  923. that Jesus

  924. physically

  925. could see

  926. them.

  927. It's that

  928. he knew

  929. where they

  930. were.

  931. He knew

  932. what was

  933. happening.

  934. They

  935. couldn't

  936. see him

  937. at the

  938. moment.

  939. They

  940. couldn't

  941. tell what

  942. was going

  943. on at

  944. the moment

  945. but he

  946. saw them.

  947. He knew

  948. them.

  949. He knew

  950. what was

  951. going on

  952. and he

  953. sees us

  954. too.

  955. I don't

  956. know what

  957. kind of

  958. storm you

  959. may be

  960. going

  961. through

  962. today at

  963. this point

  964. in your

  965. life.

  966. Be careful

  967. before you

  968. wish it

  969. away.

  970. Because it

  971. may be

  972. that it's

  973. this particular

  974. storm that

  975. Jesus is

  976. planning to

  977. reveal himself

  978. to you in

  979. a completely

  980. unique way

  981. that you

  982. haven't

  983. experienced

  984. up to

  985. this point.

  986. And just

  987. know that

  988. no matter

  989. how dark

  990. it is

  991. and how

  992. difficult

  993. it is

  994. he sees

  995. you.

  996. He knows

  997. you.

  998. He knows

  999. what's going

  1000. on in

  1001. your life.

  1002. Verse 48

  1003. About the

  1004. fourth watch

  1005. of the night

  1006. he came to

  1007. them walking

  1008. on the sea.

  1009. He meant

  1010. to pass by

  1011. them but

  1012. they saw

  1013. him.

  1014. walking

  1015. on the

  1016. sea.

  1017. They thought

  1018. it was a

  1019. ghost.

  1020. Cried out

  1021. for they

  1022. all saw

  1023. him and

  1024. were terrified.

  1025. Now we

  1026. see they're

  1027. terrified.

  1028. But it

  1029. wasn't the

  1030. storm they

  1031. were terrified

  1032. of.

  1033. It was

  1034. Jesus they

  1035. were terrified

  1036. of.

  1037. Because they

  1038. didn't know

  1039. it was

  1040. Jesus.

  1041. First

  1042. century Jews

  1043. they organized

  1044. their days into

  1045. three hour

  1046. periods.

  1047. the early

  1048. evening was

  1049. the time

  1050. that Jesus

  1051. had fed

  1052. the 5,000

  1053. that was

  1054. between

  1055. three o'clock

  1056. and six

  1057. o'clock

  1058. in the

  1059. afternoon.

  1060. Then they

  1061. had this

  1062. thing called

  1063. second

  1064. evening.

  1065. That's six

  1066. o'clock in

  1067. the evening

  1068. to nine

  1069. o'clock at

  1070. night.

  1071. That's the

  1072. time frame

  1073. that Jesus

  1074. sends the

  1075. disciples out

  1076. on the

  1077. boat.

  1078. The fourth

  1079. watch of

  1080. the night

  1081. is three

  1082. to six

  1083. in the

  1084. morning.

  1085. Think

  1086. about that.

  1087. think about

  1088. how long

  1089. Jesus let

  1090. them struggle.

  1091. He's

  1092. controlling

  1093. the storm

  1094. here.

  1095. He sent

  1096. them into

  1097. it.

  1098. He's the

  1099. one that's

  1100. holding off

  1101. on calming

  1102. the storm

  1103. right now.

  1104. Six to

  1105. eight hours

  1106. maybe.

  1107. Six to

  1108. eight hours

  1109. in the

  1110. middle of

  1111. the night.

  1112. They were

  1113. already

  1114. exhausted.

  1115. That was

  1116. the point

  1117. in going

  1118. to Bethesda

  1119. to get

  1120. some rest

  1121. that they

  1122. never actually

  1123. got.

  1124. And they're

  1125. paddling

  1126. all night.

  1127. I mean

  1128. goodness

  1129. grief.

  1130. By the

  1131. time Jesus

  1132. got to

  1133. them,

  1134. it was

  1135. early in

  1136. the morning.

  1137. They

  1138. rode all

  1139. night.

  1140. But then

  1141. Jesus came

  1142. in a most

  1143. peculiar

  1144. way.

  1145. Walking

  1146. on the

  1147. surface of

  1148. the water.

  1149. Now,

  1150. familiarity

  1151. with this

  1152. story might

  1153. cause us to

  1154. take for

  1155. granted what

  1156. I just

  1157. said.

  1158. So let's

  1159. take a

  1160. moment to

  1161. consider it.

  1162. Jesus came

  1163. to them

  1164. by walking

  1165. on water.

  1166. I was

  1167. talking to

  1168. my dad

  1169. yesterday.

  1170. I was in

  1171. a pool

  1172. actually and

  1173. he was

  1174. sitting on

  1175. the edge and

  1176. I had this

  1177. thought of

  1178. water in

  1179. my head and

  1180. I was

  1181. thinking I

  1182. can't walk

  1183. on this

  1184. right now.

  1185. And I

  1186. told my

  1187. dad, I

  1188. said I

  1189. wish that,

  1190. I wish I

  1191. could grasp

  1192. maybe more

  1193. emotionally

  1194. what this

  1195. was like.

  1196. I can

  1197. understand it

  1198. factually, I

  1199. believe it with

  1200. my whole heart.

  1201. It's hard for

  1202. me to grasp it

  1203. in the way that

  1204. the disciples

  1205. clearly would

  1206. have grasped

  1207. it.

  1208. He walked

  1209. on the

  1210. surface of

  1211. the water

  1212. four miles

  1213. in, in

  1214. the middle

  1215. of a storm.

  1216. Now tell

  1217. me, who

  1218. can walk

  1219. on water?

  1220. I can't

  1221. do that.

  1222. You can't

  1223. do that.

  1224. Gus can

  1225. do that.

  1226. And he

  1227. said he

  1228. might

  1229. give it

  1230. a shot.

  1231. I'll give

  1232. it a shot.

  1233. The

  1234. disciples

  1235. couldn't

  1236. except

  1237. Peter and

  1238. it was

  1239. only because

  1240. Jesus allowed

  1241. him.

  1242. There's

  1243. only one

  1244. person that

  1245. can walk

  1246. on water

  1247. and it's

  1248. not the

  1249. Messiah.

  1250. It's the

  1251. Son of

  1252. God.

  1253. which tells

  1254. us something

  1255. significant

  1256. about what

  1257. this moment

  1258. was.

  1259. They were

  1260. misunderstanding

  1261. Jesus'

  1262. messianic

  1263. purpose.

  1264. And so

  1265. Jesus comes

  1266. to them in

  1267. a way that

  1268. they can't

  1269. mistake it.

  1270. This isn't a

  1271. messianic

  1272. expectation.

  1273. This is an

  1274. expectation that

  1275. we would only

  1276. see in God

  1277. himself.

  1278. It's easy to

  1279. get a little

  1280. confused in

  1281. this verse

  1282. when Mark

  1283. says that he

  1284. meant to

  1285. pass by

  1286. them.

  1287. But there

  1288. is a little

  1289. bit of

  1290. significance

  1291. here.

  1292. He doesn't

  1293. mean that

  1294. Jesus was

  1295. walking past

  1296. them as if

  1297. he didn't

  1298. want to be

  1299. seen and

  1300. they happened

  1301. to notice

  1302. him out

  1303. there.

  1304. It's the

  1305. sense that

  1306. he was

  1307. walking beside

  1308. them for

  1309. the specific

  1310. purpose that

  1311. he would be

  1312. seen.

  1313. That's what's

  1314. going on

  1315. here.

  1316. Now,

  1317. some of

  1318. us suggested

  1319. that there's

  1320. a correlation

  1321. here in the

  1322. language to

  1323. when God

  1324. passed by

  1325. Moses in

  1326. Exodus 34.

  1327. Do you

  1328. remember that

  1329. story?

  1330. Moses goes up

  1331. on the

  1332. mountain.

  1333. He's

  1334. getting the

  1335. second go

  1336. around for

  1337. the Ten

  1338. Commandment

  1339. tablets.

  1340. He says,

  1341. God, I

  1342. just want to

  1343. see you.

  1344. Will you

  1345. let me

  1346. see you?

  1347. God says,

  1348. I'll hide you

  1349. in the

  1350. cleft of

  1351. the rock

  1352. and I

  1353. will pass

  1354. by you.

  1355. He was

  1356. revealing

  1357. himself.

  1358. Understandably,

  1359. the men

  1360. were scared.

  1361. Wouldn't you

  1362. be?

  1363. Why were they

  1364. scared?

  1365. The thought

  1366. would have

  1367. never crossed

  1368. through their

  1369. minds.

  1370. I wonder

  1371. if Jesus

  1372. will come

  1373. walking by

  1374. on the water

  1375. tonight.

  1376. Who would

  1377. even think

  1378. about that?

  1379. None of

  1380. us would

  1381. ever even

  1382. imagine that.

  1383. And they

  1384. weren't

  1385. especially

  1386. superstitious

  1387. people,

  1388. the Jews,

  1389. but these

  1390. men, the

  1391. only explanation

  1392. they could

  1393. come up with

  1394. in that

  1395. moment is

  1396. this is a

  1397. ghost and

  1398. they were

  1399. terrified.

  1400. And then

  1401. verse 50,

  1402. they were

  1403. going to

  1404. go to

  1405. them.

  1406. And they

  1407. said,

  1408. take heart,

  1409. it is I,

  1410. don't be

  1411. afraid.

  1412. And he

  1413. got into

  1414. the boat

  1415. with them

  1416. and the

  1417. wind ceased.

  1418. They didn't

  1419. recognize him

  1420. at first,

  1421. but they

  1422. knew his

  1423. voice.

  1424. And the

  1425. miracle wasn't

  1426. over.

  1427. That's what the

  1428. amazing thing

  1429. is here.

  1430. It's

  1431. unbelievable

  1432. that Jesus

  1433. walked on

  1434. water.

  1435. water.

  1436. But did

  1437. you notice?

  1438. This time he

  1439. calmed the

  1440. storm without

  1441. even saying

  1442. anything.

  1443. The last

  1444. time he

  1445. said,

  1446. peace be

  1447. still,

  1448. and he

  1449. harnessed

  1450. creation,

  1451. this time

  1452. all it

  1453. took was

  1454. from climbing

  1455. the boat

  1456. and all

  1457. of a sudden

  1458. it's all

  1459. over.

  1460. It's

  1461. amazing.

  1462. And so we

  1463. have to ask

  1464. this question.

  1465. Who can

  1466. see the

  1467. storm tossed

  1468. in the

  1469. middle of

  1470. the night?

  1471. I can't

  1472. see that.

  1473. You can't

  1474. see that.

  1475. Who can

  1476. walk on

  1477. water?

  1478. I can't

  1479. do that.

  1480. You can't

  1481. do that.

  1482. Who can

  1483. calm the

  1484. wind and

  1485. the waves?

  1486. Not me.

  1487. Maybe Gus.

  1488. Only God

  1489. can do

  1490. this.

  1491. Only God

  1492. can do

  1493. this.

  1494. That's the

  1495. point.

  1496. That's the

  1497. point of the

  1498. walking on

  1499. the water.

  1500. Thirdly,

  1501. write down

  1502. authentic

  1503. worship.

  1504. verse 51,

  1505. and they

  1506. were utterly

  1507. astounded

  1508. for they

  1509. did not

  1510. understand

  1511. the loaves,

  1512. but their

  1513. hearts were

  1514. hardened.

  1515. They were

  1516. blown away

  1517. by what

  1518. they witnessed.

  1519. You know,

  1520. there's a

  1521. type of

  1522. amazement

  1523. that leads

  1524. us to

  1525. cheer or

  1526. show

  1527. appreciation

  1528. for a

  1529. person or

  1530. for an

  1531. action.

  1532. Think

  1533. going to

  1534. a ball

  1535. game.

  1536. Julie and I

  1537. were watching

  1538. the Yankees

  1539. and the

  1540. Royals

  1541. play the

  1542. other night.

  1543. The Yankees

  1544. were down

  1545. in the

  1546. bottom of

  1547. the ninth.

  1548. Luke Voigt

  1549. hit a

  1550. walk-off

  1551. single that

  1552. won the

  1553. game for

  1554. the Yankees.

  1555. And what

  1556. happened,

  1557. what ensued

  1558. after that

  1559. is what

  1560. you might

  1561. expect.

  1562. The whole

  1563. crowd goes

  1564. crazy.

  1565. All the

  1566. players rush

  1567. onto the

  1568. field.

  1569. They're

  1570. jumping

  1571. around.

  1572. They're

  1573. amazed

  1574. in that

  1575. moment.

  1576. They're

  1577. amazed

  1578. at what

  1579. Luke Voigt

  1580. has just

  1581. done.

  1582. They're

  1583. amazed

  1584. that they

  1585. got to

  1586. experience

  1587. this victory

  1588. in the way

  1589. that they

  1590. did.

  1591. It would

  1592. have been

  1593. a completely

  1594. different type

  1595. of amazement

  1596. if after

  1597. hitting that

  1598. and winning

  1599. the game,

  1600. Luke Voigt

  1601. started to

  1602. flap his

  1603. arms and

  1604. fly around

  1605. the stadium.

  1606. That's a

  1607. different kind

  1608. of amazement.

  1609. The men

  1610. weren't in

  1611. the boat

  1612. saying,

  1613. Jesus,

  1614. you rock.

  1615. That's

  1616. awesome.

  1617. Do it

  1618. again.

  1619. No,

  1620. that's not

  1621. the kind

  1622. of amazement

  1623. that's happening

  1624. here.

  1625. What's

  1626. happening

  1627. here is

  1628. utter

  1629. worship.

  1630. it sends

  1631. them to

  1632. their knees.

  1633. And how

  1634. do we

  1635. know that?

  1636. Because Mark

  1637. doesn't say

  1638. it.

  1639. We have

  1640. to borrow

  1641. from the

  1642. other gospels.

  1643. Matthew

  1644. says it.

  1645. Matthew

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  1646. chapter 14,

  1647. and those

  1648. in the

  1649. boat

  1650. worshipped

  1651. him,

  1652. saying,

  1653. truly,

  1654. you are

  1655. the son

  1656. of God.

  1657. This is

  1658. why this

  1659. event matters.

  1660. Remember

  1661. the last

  1662. time Jesus

  1663. calmed the

  1664. storm?

  1665. What was

  1666. it that

  1667. the men

  1668. said after?

  1669. What

  1670. kind of

  1671. man is

  1672. this that

  1673. even the

  1674. wind and

  1675. the seas

  1676. obey him?

  1677. They were

  1678. amazed,

  1679. but they

  1680. were asking

  1681. the wrong

  1682. question.

  1683. What kind

  1684. of man

  1685. is this?

  1686. What kind

  1687. of Messiah

  1688. is this?

  1689. What power

  1690. he has?

  1691. Now they're

  1692. saying the

  1693. right thing.

  1694. Truly,

  1695. you are

  1696. the son

  1697. of God.

  1698. That's why

  1699. this matters.

  1700. It's the

  1701. first time

  1702. they've made

  1703. this confession

  1704. in their

  1705. time in

  1706. following

  1707. Christ

  1708. in the

  1709. gospels.

  1710. This is

  1711. the first

  1712. time that

  1713. the disciples

  1714. acknowledge

  1715. this thing

  1716. about Jesus'

  1717. identity.

  1718. When Luke

  1719. covers the

  1720. feeding of

  1721. the 5,000,

  1722. he immediately

  1723. follows it up

  1724. with that

  1725. great confession

  1726. from Peter

  1727. where Peter

  1728. says,

  1729. you are the

  1730. Christ,

  1731. the son of

  1732. God.

  1733. Matthew says,

  1734. he gets in

  1735. the boat and

  1736. they said,

  1737. truly you are

  1738. the son of

  1739. God.

  1740. Mark's going

  1741. to get there

  1742. in chapter 8

  1743. with that same

  1744. confession.

  1745. Here's what

  1746. John says.

  1747. Remember the

  1748. next day,

  1749. the crowds

  1750. find Jesus

  1751. and he gives

  1752. this lesson

  1753. on how he

  1754. is the bread

  1755. of life

  1756. and everybody

  1757. left him.

  1758. Everybody,

  1759. even the

  1760. disciples outside

  1761. of the 12,

  1762. they left him.

  1763. They said,

  1764. this is too

  1765. fanatical for

  1766. us and they

  1767. left.

  1768. Here's what

  1769. happened.

  1770. John 6,

  1771. after this,

  1772. many of his

  1773. disciples turned

  1774. back and no

  1775. longer walked

  1776. with him.

  1777. So Jesus

  1778. said to the

  1779. 12,

  1780. do you go

  1781. away as

  1782. well?

  1783. Are you

  1784. going to

  1785. leave me

  1786. too?

  1787. And Peter

  1788. said,

  1789. Lord,

  1790. to whom

  1791. shall we

  1792. go?

  1793. you have

  1794. the words

  1795. of life

  1796. and we

  1797. have believed

  1798. and have

  1799. come to

  1800. know that

  1801. you are

  1802. the Holy

  1803. One of

  1804. God.

  1805. What's the

  1806. difference

  1807. between the

  1808. 12 in

  1809. John 6

  1810. and the

  1811. crowds in

  1812. John 6?

  1813. The crowds

  1814. were amazed

  1815. at what

  1816. Jesus could

  1817. do.

  1818. The

  1819. disciples,

  1820. even despite

  1821. their

  1822. misunderstanding,

  1823. despite the

  1824. fact that they

  1825. couldn't make

  1826. all the

  1827. connections the

  1828. right way

  1829. yet,

  1830. despite all

  1831. of that,

  1832. they believed

  1833. that this is

  1834. who he was.

  1835. That was the

  1836. difference.

  1837. You know

  1838. what will

  1839. keep you

  1840. faithful to

  1841. Christ,

  1842. faithful to

  1843. the church,

  1844. faithful to

  1845. pursue godliness

  1846. in your life?

  1847. It's not a

  1848. sheer amazement

  1849. with Jesus.

  1850. That won't

  1851. get you very

  1852. far.

  1853. That won't

  1854. get you

  1855. very far.

  1856. What will

  1857. keep you

  1858. going,

  1859. even when

  1860. you don't

  1861. understand,

  1862. is the

  1863. fact that

  1864. you believe

  1865. that this

  1866. is who

  1867. he is.

  1868. This is

  1869. truly the

  1870. son of

  1871. God.

  1872. This is

  1873. the savior

  1874. of the

  1875. world.

  1876. It is the

  1877. only thing

  1878. that will

  1879. push you

  1880. through.

  1881. When he

  1882. sends you

  1883. into a

  1884. storm,

  1885. it won't

  1886. be your

  1887. amazement

  1888. that will

  1889. get you

  1890. through the

  1891. storm.

  1892. It will

  1893. get you

  1894. through the

  1895. storm.

  1896. This is the

  1897. son of

  1898. God.

  1899. This is

  1900. the son

  1901. of God.

  1902. This is

  1903. the son

  1904. of God.

  1905. And it's

  1906. another

  1907. reminder that

  1908. proximity to

  1909. Jesus doesn't

  1910. always result

  1911. in faith.

  1912. Being amazed

  1913. by him

  1914. doesn't

  1915. automatically

  1916. mean that a

  1917. person has

  1918. come to

  1919. terms with

  1920. his true

  1921. identity and

  1922. purpose.

  1923. There are

  1924. plenty of

  1925. people in

  1926. churches this

  1927. morning around

  1928. Charlotte that

  1929. are totally

  1930. amazed by

  1931. Jesus,

  1932. but they

  1933. do not

  1934. have faith

  1935. in Jesus.

  1936. There's a

  1937. difference.

  1938. There's a

  1939. difference.

  1940. Let's wrap

  1941. it up this

  1942. way.

  1943. Verses 53

  1944. to 56.

  1945. When they

  1946. had crossed,

  1947. they came to

  1948. the land at

  1949. Gennesaret,

  1950. moored to

  1951. the shore,

  1952. and when they

  1953. got out of

  1954. the boat,

  1955. the people

  1956. immediately

  1957. recognized

  1958. him and

  1959. ran about

  1960. the whole

  1961. region and

  1962. began to

  1963. bring the

  1964. sick people

  1965. on their

  1966. beds to

  1967. wherever

  1968. they heard

  1969. he was,

  1970. and wherever

  1971. he came in

  1972. villages,

  1973. cities,

  1974. or countryside.

  1975. They laid

  1976. the sick,

  1977. in the

  1978. marketplaces,

  1979. and implored

  1980. him that

  1981. they might

  1982. touch even

  1983. the fringe

  1984. of his

  1985. garment,

  1986. and as

  1987. many as

  1988. touched it

  1989. were made

  1990. well.

  1991. So these

  1992. closing verses

  1993. of this

  1994. chapter,

  1995. they're really

  1996. just a

  1997. summary.

  1998. Mark does

  1999. these summaries

  2000. periodically.

  2001. It's when he's

  2002. making a

  2003. transition in

  2004. the narrative.

  2005. We're about

  2006. to go into

  2007. another transition

  2008. in Mark

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  2009. chapter 7.

  2010. We're going

  2011. to see him

  2012. confronting

  2013. Pharisees in

  2014. his teaching

  2015. particularly.

  2016. So he's

  2017. transitioning away

  2018. from this focus

  2019. on the

  2020. disciples

  2021. for a

  2022. moment.

  2023. And he

  2024. tells us

  2025. here's what

  2026. was happening.

  2027. They made

  2028. it to

  2029. Gennesaret.

  2030. They got

  2031. off the

  2032. boat.

  2033. People

  2034. recognized

  2035. him.

  2036. And they

  2037. were bringing

  2038. people from

  2039. everywhere.

  2040. Everywhere he

  2041. went,

  2042. towns,

  2043. cities,

  2044. villages,

  2045. countryside,

  2046. didn't matter.

  2047. People were

  2048. coming from

  2049. everywhere.

  2050. And he was

  2051. healing many,

  2052. many people,

  2053. sometimes even

  2054. by the simple

  2055. touch of his

  2056. clothes.

  2057. And here's

  2058. what I want

  2059. to note

  2060. as we

  2061. close.

  2062. I want you

  2063. to notice

  2064. how little

  2065. detail there

  2066. is in this

  2067. summary.

  2068. We know

  2069. of no

  2070. specific

  2071. people.

  2072. We really

  2073. know of no

  2074. specific place.

  2075. Gennesaret was

  2076. a region.

  2077. We just know

  2078. that that's the

  2079. site of Galilee

  2080. he was on.

  2081. And that

  2082. everywhere he

  2083. went, lots

  2084. and lots of

  2085. people came,

  2086. and he did

  2087. lots and lots

  2088. of things for

  2089. them.

  2090. There's a lack

  2091. of detail here.

  2092. here's what I

  2093. take from

  2094. them.

  2095. There are

  2096. thousands and

  2097. thousands of

  2098. miraculous moments

  2099. in Jesus's

  2100. ministry that we

  2101. know absolutely

  2102. nothing about.

  2103. We have no

  2104. idea.

  2105. At the end of

  2106. John's gospel,

  2107. he mentions this.

  2108. In John chapter

    John 20 chapter mention

  2109. 20, he says,

  2110. now Jesus did

  2111. many other signs

  2112. in the presence

  2113. of the disciples,

  2114. which are not

  2115. written in this

  2116. book.

  2117. But these

  2118. things are

  2119. written that

  2120. you may believe

  2121. that Jesus is

  2122. the Christ,

  2123. the Son of

  2124. God, and that

  2125. believing you

  2126. may have life

  2127. in his name.

  2128. There's lots of

  2129. things we don't

  2130. know.

  2131. The things that

  2132. we do know are

  2133. for the purpose

  2134. of not amazingness

  2135. at his power,

  2136. but drawing us

  2137. to a point of

  2138. decision where

  2139. we will believe

  2140. in his name,

  2141. and by believing

  2142. in his name,

  2143. we will have

  2144. eternal life and

  2145. escape eternal

  2146. hell.

  2147. That's the

  2148. purpose of what

  2149. these gospel

  2150. authors have

  2151. written.

  2152. And then John

  2153. says this.

  2154. There are also

  2155. many other

  2156. things that he

  2157. did.

  2158. Were every one

  2159. of them to be

  2160. written, I

  2161. suppose that the

  2162. world itself could

  2163. not contain the

  2164. books that would

  2165. be written.

  2166. Here's the point.

  2167. There is more

  2168. than enough

  2169. evidence for you

  2170. to choose to

  2171. follow Christ

  2172. in faith.

  2173. You just take

  2174. your pick.

  2175. Even one

  2176. example is

  2177. enough.

  2178. Perhaps you

  2179. just go with

  2180. the walking

  2181. on the water.

  2182. That's enough.

  2183. But then think

  2184. about the fact

  2185. that God has

  2186. revealed to us

  2187. all of these

  2188. amazing things

  2189. in the scriptures.

  2190. And then on

  2191. top of that,

  2192. he said,

  2193. and there's

  2194. thousands and

  2195. thousands more

  2196. things that he

  2197. did in three

  2198. years.

  2199. And if we

  2200. were to write

  2201. it all down,

  2202. the world

  2203. couldn't contain

  2204. all the books

  2205. that would be

  2206. written.

  2207. He's a

  2208. wonderfully

  2209. compassionate

  2210. savior.

  2211. There's enough

  2212. evidence for

  2213. here, for you.

  2214. There's nothing

  2215. else for you to

  2216. find.

  2217. The scripture is

  2218. enough.

  2219. Now you must

  2220. believe.

  2221. And if you

  2222. don't believe,

  2223. you will not

  2224. have life.

  2225. You will die

  2226. in your sin.

  2227. You'll spend

  2228. eternity in

  2229. hell.

  2230. But if you

  2231. will believe,

  2232. you will have

  2233. life in his

  2234. name.

  2235. Think of the

  2236. compassion of

  2237. this savior.

  2238. Most of those

  2239. people he healed

  2240. did not follow

  2241. him.

  2242. Now, if you

  2243. had some kind

  2244. of power to

  2245. help somebody,

  2246. and they

  2247. rejected you,

  2248. you probably

  2249. wouldn't be very

  2250. inclined to help

  2251. them.

  2252. Not Jesus.

  2253. They didn't

  2254. believe him.

  2255. He still

  2256. healed them.

  2257. He still

  2258. taught them.

  2259. He's a

  2260. compassionate

  2261. savior.

  2262. Now, think

  2263. of the amazing

  2264. compassion that

  2265. he shows to

  2266. those who do

  2267. believe.

  2268. Because those

  2269. who do believe,

  2270. he takes

  2271. your sin.

  2272. And he

  2273. takes it on

  2274. himself.

  2275. And he

  2276. gives you

  2277. his life.

  2278. What's the

  2279. walking on the

  2280. water about?

  2281. It's about

  2282. who Jesus

  2283. is.

  2284. And when we

  2285. really begin to

  2286. understand who

  2287. Jesus is,

  2288. then we can

  2289. actually truly

  2290. understand what

  2291. this is all

  2292. about.

  2293. What it's all

  2294. about is the

  2295. son of God

  2296. taking on the

  2297. sin of man.

  2298. So that

  2299. sinful man can

  2300. have the

  2301. righteousness of

  2302. God in Christ.
