  1. This order of revealed truth is important.

  2. And it starts there with Peter's confession in verse 29.

  3. You can look at it there.

  4. And he asked them, but who do you say that I am?

  5. And Peter answered, you are the Christ.

  6. There's this initial moment of revelation that was so necessary

  7. because it's necessary that God convince us of Jesus's identity

  8. because you cannot rightly understand what Jesus did apart from believing in who he is.

  9. It had to start there.

  10. And that's the structure of Mark's gospel.

  11. He spends the first eight chapters really focusing in on who Jesus is.

  12. And the disciples have now come to see that the Lord has opened their eyes to that.

  13. In fact, in Matthew's account, Jesus immediately follows Peter's confession by saying,

  14. blessed are you, Simon Barjona, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,

  15. but my father which is in heaven has revealed this to you.

  16. God was opening their eyes.

  17. This was a great moment, but it was a significant moment in the order.

  18. They're seeing who Jesus is.

  19. And then Jesus begins to plainly tell them about his coming suffering, death, and resurrection.

  20. But that can only be understood in light of the fact that they had just acknowledged

  21. who he is.

  22. And now he opens up about what he is there to do.

  23. You see that in verse 31.

  24. We read it.

  25. Let's read it again.

  26. And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things,

  27. be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes.

  28. That is a representation of the Sanhedrin.

  29. And he would be killed.

  30. And after three days, rise again.

  31. Now, this truth was not easy for these men to understand or accept.

  32. And of course, that's represented in the fact that Peter,

  33. who had just made this great confession of Christ,

  34. then pulls Jesus to the side and scolds him

  35. because Jesus' mission didn't meet Peter's expectations.

  36. And then what follows that is the most severe rebuke

  37. that we see Jesus giving anyone in the Gospels who desired to follow him.

  38. What was it that he said?

  39. Get behind me, Satan.

  40. And it wasn't that Jesus was insinuating that Peter had been possessed by the devil

  41. or that he was otherwise under the influence of Satan in a very specific sense.

  42. What he was saying is that the men in rejection of Christ's mission

  43. had inadvertently set themselves in opposition to the will of God.

  44. Because they did not accept the word of God,

  45. they set themselves as adversaries to the will of God.

  46. And then what was it that Jesus said immediately following?

  47. You do not have your mind set on the things of God.

  48. You know what your problem is, Peter?

  49. You only want what you want.

  50. You're not thinking about what God's desire,

  51. what God's will is for this.

  52. And isn't that the place that we often find ourselves in?

  53. In the struggle, we're constantly fighting our tendency to only look at the eyes of man,

  54. only to set our minds on the things of man,

  55. rather than setting our minds on the things of God.

  56. And look where it got Peter in this passage in the other men.

  57. And then it's going to continue to be a theme as we get into these next verses.

  58. Because they misunderstood the mission of Jesus,

  59. they also misunderstood what it means to follow Jesus.

  60. And now that he had plainly spoken about his purpose,

  61. it was necessary that Jesus explain the true meaning of discipleship.

  62. What does it really mean to follow Christ?

  63. That's what he's getting at now.

  64. And you see the progression now, right?

  65. You see the order of revelation.

  66. He focuses on his identity first.

  67. Who do you say that I am?

  68. And from there, he moves on to his purpose.

  69. Now that you know that, this is the gospel.

  70. Crucifixion and resurrection.

  71. And once Jesus has initiated that revelation,

  72. then he says, now here's what it means to follow me.

  73. Here's what it means to follow me.

  74. Because it is not enough, hear me,

  75. it is not enough to acknowledge the truth of who Jesus is.

  76. To acknowledge the truth of Jesus's purpose in an intellectual way.

  77. Simply acknowledging those things is not enough.

  78. You must follow Christ.

  79. And so he doesn't just stop with the explanations.

  80. He then calls them.

  81. Here's who I am.

  82. Here's what I'm doing.

  83. Here's what it means to actually follow me.

  84. And that's where we get here.

  85. What Jesus called them to is radically different than what they expected.

  86. And it may be that as we get into these verses,

  87. it's radically different than your expectations too.

  88. His teaching here is not hard to understand,

  89. but it is very hard to receive.

  90. After hearing his teaching,

  91. the question for the 12 disciples,

  92. and what will be the question for us,

  93. the conclusion of this passage is this.

  94. Is Jesus worth what it cost to follow him?

  95. Is Jesus worth what it cost to follow him?

  96. Look with me at verse 34.

  97. Calling the crowd to him with his disciples,

  98. he said to them,

  99. if anyone would come after me,

  100. let him deny himself,

  101. take up his cross,

  102. and follow me.

  103. That's an intense call to discipleship.

  104. If anyone will come after me,

  105. if anyone desires to follow after me,

  106. he must forget himself.

  107. He must take up the cross.

  108. Luke adds daily.

  109. He must take up the cross daily.

  110. And he must follow me.

  111. There's been a significant amount of disagreement over the years

  112. as to what Jesus means in this call to follow him.

  113. And some have suggested that Jesus is referring to

  114. sort of an elite category of Christian experience

  115. that requires a higher level of commitment.

  116. In their minds,

  117. discipleship is this high level.

  118. It's a believer that just decides,

  119. okay,

  120. I'm going to really give this all that I've got at this point,

  121. that that's what discipleship is.

  122. And so they reason that what Jesus is getting at here

  123. is that if you really want to be a good disciple,

  124. a good follower,

  125. this is what will be true of your life.

  126. And they say that a believer and a disciple

  127. are two different things.

  128. In their minds,

  129. Jesus is referring to a Christian

  130. that just wants to take their faith to the next level.

  131. But Jesus makes no such distinction anywhere,

  132. anywhere in the Gospels.

  133. Jesus never says that there's two categories of Christians.

  134. He never says that to be a disciple

  135. is a different thing than being a believer.

  136. And the summoning of the crowd here in verse 34

  137. signals that the call to discipleship

  138. is not exclusive to the individuals

  139. that desire to go deeper in their faith.

  140. Think about this.

  141. In the last two conversations,

  142. it's been private with his disciples.

  143. On the road to Caesarea Philippi,

  144. that's where the confession comes,

  145. the confession of Christ.

  146. It's once the,

  147. or excuse me,

  148. on the road to Caesarea Philippi.

  149. And when they get there,

  150. that's when this conversation takes place

  151. about his purpose.

  152. And now after those conversations has taken place,

  153. notice what Jesus does.

  154. Apparently there's nearby crowds,

  155. no doubt desiring to be close to Jesus.

  156. And what does he do

  157. before he gets to the call to discipleship?

  158. He calls the crowds.

  159. He calls the crowds.

  160. Meaning that this message is not merely

  161. for those who were already intrigued by him,

  162. that were already following him.

  163. This is the message for everyone.

  164. It's not an exclusive group of Christians.

  165. Jesus never called someone to believe in him

  166. that he didn't expect to repent and follow him

  167. as a faithful disciple.

  168. Discipleship is not an exclusive category of Christianity.

  169. It is Christianity.

  170. And to be a believer in Christ is to be a disciple.

  171. And what follows in Jesus's teaching here in these verses

  172. is not a description of an elite Christian.

  173. It is a description of a true Christian.

  174. And I want to draw your mind for just a moment

  175. back to Mark chapter four.

  176. In Mark chapter four,

  177. remember Jesus is telling these parables

  178. and he opens with this parable about the soils.

  179. Do you remember?

  180. Jesus says there's four types of soils

  181. and only one of those soils actually produces fruit.

  182. The other three,

  183. or in the other three types of soil,

  184. the seed is ultimately destroyed

  185. or it is removed in some way or another.

  186. And later on, on that day,

  187. Jesus is explaining what this parable was about.

  188. And he says that the soils represent the heart of man.

  189. Every man has a type of soil that is their heart.

  190. And it falls into one of these four categories.

  191. And then he says,

  192. the seed is the word of God,

  193. that as the seed,

  194. the word of God is sown on man's heart.

  195. There's only one type of heart

  196. that will actually produce spiritual fruit

  197. that will actually indicate genuine salvation.

  198. And that is the fertile soil,

  199. as you remember the parable.

  200. But I think as Jesus gets here to Mark chapter eight

  201. in this call to discipleship in verse 34,

  202. he's anticipating those people

  203. who are represented by the soil

  204. that is rocky and weedy.

  205. Remember?

  206. Let me read it to you.

  207. Mark chapter four, verse 16.

  208. These are the ones, Jesus said,

  209. that were sown on the rocky ground.

  210. The ones who, when they hear the word,

  211. immediately receive it with joy.

  212. But they have no root in themselves.

  213. They endure for a while.

  214. Then when tribulation or persecution arises

  215. on account of the word,

  216. immediately they fall away.

  217. And others are the ones sown among thorns.

  218. They are those who hear the word,

  219. but the cares of this world

  220. and the deceitfulness of riches

  221. and the desires for other things

  222. enter in and choke the word

  223. and it proves unfruitful.

  224. Notice the things that ruin the seed in these soils.

  225. First, persecution,

  226. suffering,

  227. tribulation,

  228. difficulty,

  229. not just difficulty in general,

  230. difficulty as Jesus says,

  231. on account of the word.

  232. And they fall away.

  233. What's the others?

  234. The cares of this world.

  235. The deceitfulness of riches,

  236. following after wealth,

  237. caught up in our own sin,

  238. caught up in our own lives,

  239. the desires for things other than the world,

  240. than the word.

  241. And what happens?

  242. The word is choked out.

  243. Now what's the common denominator

  244. in both of these soils?

  245. As Jesus told Peter in verse 33,

  246. they have their minds set on the things of man

  247. rather than the things of God.

  248. And so these people at some point come to the word

  249. and perhaps for a little while,

  250. they receive it with joy

  251. and they appear as far as we can tell

  252. to be true Christians.

  253. But whenever the hardship comes,

  254. whenever somebody doesn't appreciate their Christianity,

  255. they immediately fall away,

  256. it's not worth it to them.

  257. Or it gets choked out by the sin of their life

  258. or their other pursuits of their life.

  259. They never really follow Christ.

  260. They're intrigued by Christ.

  261. They're enamored by Christ,

  262. but they never actually follow him.

  263. And so ultimately,

  264. they prove to be unfruitful.

  265. And I think Jesus has these categories in mind

  266. as he's calling the crowds to him in Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  267. He's thinking,

  268. listen, you may acknowledge who I am.

  269. You may even see my purpose.

  270. But so did the people who received it with joy.

  271. So did the rocky soil people.

  272. So did the weedy soil people.

  273. But it didn't mean that they were true Christians.

  274. When Jesus calls the crowds,

  275. he anticipates that many would make a profession of faith

  276. only to later abandon that faith

  277. when following Christ just cost too much.

  278. He warned that those who thought they could gain salvation

  279. by merely acknowledging his identity and purpose

  280. but never truly following him,

  281. it was impossible.

  282. So he proclaimed that the way of discipleship

  283. includes total self-abandonment.

  284. And it inevitably leads

  285. to some form of suffering on account of Christ.

  286. Jesus here is teaching the crowd to count the cost,

  287. which is actually exactly what he said

  288. when saying this same thing in another moment.

  289. We find that in Luke 14.

  290. In fact, why don't you turn there?

  291. Luke chapter 14.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  292. And read this with me.

  293. Now great crowds accompanied him.

  294. And he turned and here's what he said.

  295. If anyone comes to me

  296. and does not hate his own father and mother

  297. and wife and children and brothers and sisters,

  298. yes, in his own life,

  299. he cannot be my disciple.

  300. Whoever does not bear his own cross

  301. and come after me

  302. cannot be my disciple.

  303. Now, of course, Jesus isn't advocating

  304. that we actually hate those that we love.

  305. That's not what he means here.

  306. What he means is that

  307. those who would love father and mother more than him,

  308. as he says in Matthew 10,

  309. are not worthy of him.

  310. Those who would love son or daughter more than him

  311. are not worthy of him.

  312. That our love for Christ

  313. will make our lesser loves

  314. seem actually more like hate.

  315. Okay?

  316. That's what he's getting at.

  317. Abandonment of self following him.

  318. Now continue on with me.

  319. For which of you desiring to build a tower

  320. does not first sit down and count the cost,

  321. whether he has enough to complete it?

  322. Otherwise, when he's laid the foundation

  323. and is not able to finish,

  324. all who see it begin to mock him,

  325. saying,

  326. this man began to build

  327. and was not able to finish.

  328. Or what king going out

  329. to encounter another king in war

  330. will not sit down first

  331. and deliberate

  332. whether he is able with 10,000

  333. to meet him who comes against him

  334. with 20,000?

  335. And if not,

  336. while the other is yet a great way off,

  337. he sends a delegation

  338. and asks for terms of peace.

  339. So therefore,

  340. any one of you who does not renounce

  341. all that he has

  342. cannot be my disciple.

  343. Those are hard words.

  344. Hard words.

  345. What is Jesus calling us to?

  346. He's calling us to repentance.

  347. To abandon everything else in this life

  348. to follow him.

  349. And an unwillingness to turn

  350. means that we are not actually

  351. his disciples.

  352. So in Mark 8,

  353. he's calling them to count the cost.

  354. We've said this the last couple of weeks

  355. and I think it's just helpful

  356. to be reminded

  357. that true conversion

  358. does not only produce

  359. a confession of Jesus,

  360. but a follower of Jesus.

  361. And a true follower of Jesus

  362. will inevitably display

  363. the marks that Jesus teaches

  364. in this passage.

  365. Isn't that what James

  366. was getting on about

  367. in his letter in James chapter 2?

    James 2 chapter mention

  368. Show me your faith

  369. without your works

  370. and I'll show you my faith

  371. by my works.

  372. In other words,

  373. it's not the works that save us,

  374. but true faith results

  375. in radical change.

  376. So true conversion

  377. is not merely saying intellectually

  378. giving assent to the things of Christ.

  379. It is actually abandoning all

  380. to follow after that Christ.

  381. And the true disciple

  382. ultimately will demonstrate

  383. these marks here.

  384. Jesus gives three imperatives

  385. in this verse.

  386. They all picture together

  387. repentance, don't they?

  388. You understand repentance.

  389. Repentance, it literally means

  390. to turn away.

  391. It's a 180.

  392. It's to be going in one direction

  393. and then make a complete turn

  394. and go in the other direction.

  395. And Jesus gives these three imperatives

  396. that together picture this perfectly.

  397. He says, first,

  398. you're heading down the way of self.

  399. And if you're heading down

  400. the way of self,

  401. the first step is that

  402. you have to turn away from self.

  403. And in the process

  404. of turning away from self,

  405. you're picking up your cross

  406. and then what are you doing?

  407. You're following him.

  408. You're going in the other direction.

  409. Okay?

  410. That's what Jesus is getting at

  411. with these three imperatives.

  412. Let's talk about them quickly.

  413. Number one, he says,

  414. deny yourself

  415. or deny himself.

  416. If anyone would come after me,

  417. let him deny himself.

  418. Many people don't make it past

  419. this first item

  420. because it goes against everything

  421. in our nature, doesn't it?

  422. Our culture idolizes self.

  423. Self-love, self-care,

  424. everything's me.

  425. Everything's there to serve me.

  426. It's my truth.

  427. We are our own gods

  428. and we worship daily

  429. at the altar of self-pleasure.

  430. That's the culture in which we live.

  431. That's the nature

  432. with which we are born.

  433. But Jesus says that to follow me,

  434. you're going to have to forget yourself.

  435. Forget yourself.

  436. This word for deny here

  437. literally means disregard.

  438. He's not talking about

  439. the mere denial of pleasures.

  440. He's not advocating an ascetic life.

  441. That's not what Jesus is saying.

  442. He's saying that when you come to me,

  443. you forget everything else.

  444. Forget yourself.

  445. Forget yourself.

  446. Stop following self.

  447. Stop following what you want

  448. and set your thoughts

  449. on the things of God.

  450. That's what a true disciple does.

  451. Denies himself.

  452. It's the total disregard

  453. and an abandonment

  454. of selfish desire

  455. and ambition.

  456. And then he says,

  457. take up his cross.

  458. If anyone wants to come after me,

  459. let him deny himself

  460. and take up his cross.

  461. What does this mean?

  462. We've all probably heard people make

  463. silly statements about this, right?

  464. Perhaps you've made them

  465. even as a joke.

  466. I got a headache today.

  467. It's just my cross to bear.

  468. No, that's not your cross to bear.

  469. That's not what Jesus means here.

  470. What was the cross?

  471. It's interesting in this passage

  472. because Jesus has not yet,

  473. as far as we can tell,

  474. actually plainly mentioned crucifixion

  475. as the means of his execution.

  476. He's just told them

  477. that he's going to be killed

  478. and that he's going to rise

  479. three days later,

  480. but there's no indication

  481. that he's actually said

  482. crucified yet.

  483. So Jesus isn't necessarily

  484. appealing to

  485. his specific form of death,

  486. even though that's an implication.

  487. That's not necessarily

  488. the primary appeal

  489. that he's making.

  490. He's appealing to what

  491. their understanding

  492. of crucifixion

  493. would have been to begin with.

  494. Well, what was crucifixion?

  495. It was the Romans' favorite way,

  496. at least in this time,

  497. it seems to be their favorite way

  498. of criminal execution.

  499. And every one of the people

  500. listening to this

  501. would have known

  502. exactly what Jesus meant.

  503. The cross represented shame.

  504. It wasn't a cultural icon

  505. in their days like it is today.

  506. Nobody wanted to be associated

  507. with a cross.

  508. That's the worst.

  509. It's like being associated

  510. with the electric chair

  511. in our culture.

  512. Nobody wants to be associated

  513. with that.

  514. That's shame.

  515. It's reproach.

  516. Criminal.

  517. There was a Roman general

  518. in around the time

  519. of Jesus' birth.

  520. His name was Verus.

  521. He was assigned

  522. to the Palestinian area

  523. at the time.

  524. There was a Jewish revolt

  525. after the death

  526. of Herod the Great.

  527. And in this Jewish revolt,

  528. Verus was called on

  529. to subdue it.

  530. And of course,

  531. he easily did that.

  532. But to make a point

  533. in Galilee,

  534. when Jesus was a child,

  535. he crucified 2,000 Galileans.

  536. And he did so

  537. by lining their crosses

  538. down the major road system

  539. that went through Galilee

  540. so that when you're taking

  541. your kids to the market

  542. in the morning,

  543. what you're walking by

  544. is cross after cross

  545. after cross

  546. after cross

  547. of brutally executed

  548. neighbors.

  549. That's what the cross

  550. meant to these people.

  551. So when Jesus says,

  552. if you're going to follow

  553. after me,

  554. you're going to have

  555. to identify with the cross.

  556. When the Romans

  557. crucified somebody,

  558. you know this

  559. from Jesus' crucifixion,

  560. but it was common.

  561. They would have to

  562. literally carry

  563. a portion of their cross

  564. to the place

  565. of their execution.

  566. The criminal would do that.

  567. Remember,

  568. in Jesus'

  569. own execution,

  570. he had to carry

  571. his own cross,

  572. but he was so weak

  573. under the weight of it,

  574. he couldn't go any further.

  575. And they had to call

  576. on somebody else

  577. from the crowd

  578. to actually finish

  579. carrying the cross

  580. to the place of execution.

  581. That was common.

  582. Jesus is literally saying,

  583. if you're going to

  584. come after me,

  585. you might as well

  586. go pick up a cross

  587. because that's the direction

  588. I'm headed.

  589. It's going to be the direction

  590. you're heading to.

  591. People are going to look at you

  592. when they find out

  593. that you're following me.

  594. They're going to look at you

  595. with disdain.

  596. Do you understand?

  597. And the world hates us.

  598. They hate us

  599. because they hated Christ.

  600. And isn't that what

  601. he told his disciples

  602. just before his crucifixion?

  603. They've hated me.

  604. They're going to hate you too.

  605. Hey,

  606. all of your friends

  607. at the synagogue,

  608. they're going to throw you

  609. out of the synagogue.

  610. And every one of you

  611. are going to suffer for me.

  612. And every one of them

  613. did suffer for him.

  614. All of them,

  615. but one,

  616. were executed

  617. for the gospel.

  618. And the one

  619. who wasn't executed

  620. was John.

  621. And he might as well

  622. have been executed.

  623. He was boiled in oil

  624. according to

  625. Christian tradition

  626. and somehow survived it

  627. and was exiled

  628. to an island

  629. where he lived out

  630. the rest of his life

  631. and ultimately succumbed

  632. his own injuries

  633. or health

  634. or whatever it was

  635. that killed him.

  636. That's what Jesus means.

  637. To follow me means

  638. no one's going to exalt you.

  639. They're actually going to do

  640. the opposite of that.

  641. In Matthew 10,

  642. Jesus said,

  643. I did not come to bring peace

  644. but a sword.

  645. And then he talks about

  646. family relationships.

  647. And he says,

  648. my gospel will divide families.

  649. In some cases,

  650. by God's grace,

  651. it actually unites families

  652. but in other cases,

  653. it's going to divide families.

  654. If your kids grow up

  655. to deny Christ

  656. and to deny you

  657. if you continue

  658. following Christ,

  659. will he be enough?

  660. If those who are closest to you

  661. decide that if you're going

  662. to continue on this path

  663. of Christianity,

  664. I don't think that we can

  665. be friends any longer,

  666. will you still follow Christ?

  667. Is he enough?

  668. Jesus isn't talking about

  669. having a headache.

  670. Jesus isn't talking about

  671. the general hardships

  672. that we all go through.

  673. He's talking about persecution

  674. for sake of the gospel

  675. and he says it's inevitable

  676. for all of us.

  677. And then he says,

  678. follow me.

  679. What is it to really

  680. follow Christ?

  681. Well,

  682. deny ourselves,

  683. take up the cross,

  684. and then we follow.

  685. Isn't that the conclusion

  686. of repentance?

  687. He's not just calling us

  688. away from something.

  689. Get this.

  690. This is the good part

  691. of this.

  692. He's not just calling us

  693. away from self.

  694. It's not what he's doing.

  695. He's calling us

  696. to himself.

  697. Do you see it?

  698. Deny yourself

  699. because you can't follow me

  700. and follow self

  701. at the same time.

  702. You see,

  703. you can't do it.

  704. He's saying,

  705. leave yourself behind

  706. and come to me

  707. because what I have

  708. to offer

  709. is so much greater

  710. than anything you think

  711. you can provide

  712. for yourself.

  713. Follow me.

  714. Come after me.

  715. Come to me.

  716. This is an invitation.

  717. It's an invitation.

  718. Do you have to count

  719. the cost?

  720. Of course.

  721. Did Jesus sugarcoat

  722. the process?

  723. By no means.

  724. But it was an invitation

  725. nonetheless.

  726. Follow me.

  727. And if you're going

  728. to follow me,

  729. it means you've got to

  730. stop following

  731. everything else.

  732. Follow me,

  733. he says.

  734. What does that mean?

  735. You go where he goes.

  736. You do as he does.

  737. You suffer even as he

  738. suffered, perhaps.

  739. Now,

  740. before I move on,

  741. it's essential to know,

  742. please hear me.

  743. See,

  744. I don't want to be

  745. confusing on this.

  746. These marks

  747. do not provide salvation.

  748. They are not what saves you.

  749. Jesus isn't going to look

  750. at your life

  751. 10 years from now

  752. to make sure

  753. that you make the cut

  754. before he actually

  755. provides his grace.

  756. That's not what Jesus

  757. is saying here.

  758. These aren't

  759. prerequisites for salvation.

  760. They are proofs

  761. of salvation.

  762. Salvation comes

  763. by God's grace

  764. alone.

  765. Ephesians 2,

  766. for by grace

  767. are you saved

  768. through faith

  769. and that not of yourselves.

  770. It's the gift of God,

  771. not of works,

  772. lest any man should boast.

  773. That's salvation.

  774. It's none of you

  775. and it's all of him.

  776. But those who have

  777. truly experienced

  778. the regenerative work

  779. of the Holy Spirit

  780. will display these marks.

  781. Not perfectly,

  782. but they will display them.

  783. They will turn from self.

  784. They will take up the cross

  785. and they will follow Christ.

  786. Bible knows no form

  787. of true Christianity

  788. that doesn't produce

  789. a fruitful faith.

  790. it's not there.

  791. It's not there.

  792. True faith

  793. always produces

  794. a faithful disciple.

  795. And so what is Jesus

  796. saying here?

  797. Follow me.

  798. Follow me.

  799. He wants you to follow him.

  800. But then notice,

  801. as we move on,

  802. he expands upon this cost.

  803. He explains it further.

  804. At this point,

  805. the people in the crowd,

  806. they had to have been thinking,

  807. maybe as you are perhaps thinking

  808. even now,

  809. why would anyone

  810. follow that call?

  811. It sounds like

  812. a lot of sacrifice.

  813. And I don't see

  814. a lot of gain,

  815. you may say.

  816. But as we study this further,

  817. we find that

  818. what he offers

  819. is far greater

  820. than what we give up.

  821. Isn't that true?

  822. Do you find that

  823. to be true?

  824. Jesus didn't come

  825. to take your life.

  826. He came to give you life.

  827. Isn't that what he said?

  828. John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  829. I came that they may have life

  830. and that they may have it

  831. abundantly.

  832. That was the purpose

  833. of his coming.

  834. What is it that John

    John 3 chapter mention

  835. chapter 3 says?

  836. Just after the famous verse

  837. in 16,

  838. we read in verse 17

  839. that God did not send

  840. his son to the world

  841. to condemn it,

  842. but that the world

  843. would be saved through him.

  844. He came to give life,

  845. which means that

  846. in this call to discipleship,

  847. he's not only calling you

  848. away from whatever

  849. your pursuit is now,

  850. he's calling you

  851. to do something

  852. far, far greater.

  853. And he explains that

  854. here.

  855. Verse 35,

  856. whoever would save

  857. his life will lose it.

  858. Whoever will lose

  859. his life for my sake

  860. and the gospels

  861. will save it.

  862. For what does it

  863. profit a man

  864. to gain the whole world

  865. and forfeit his soul?

  866. What can a man

  867. give in return

  868. for his soul?

  869. Literally there

  870. in that last question

  871. is what man

  872. can give the price

  873. for his soul?

  874. No man.

  875. There's a Greek word here

  876. that I don't want

  877. to bore you with,

  878. but I find it helpful

  879. in understanding

  880. the sequence

  881. in these three verses here.

  882. The word is psuche.

  883. It's where we get psyche from.

  884. It can be translated

  885. as either life or soul.

  886. And it's translated

  887. as both things

  888. here in these verses.

  889. It's mentioned four times.

  890. If you notice

  891. in verse 35,

  892. it's translated as life.

  893. But if you notice

  894. in verse 36

  895. and then again

  896. in verse 37,

  897. it's translated as soul.

  898. And Jesus is using it here

  899. to introduce this paradox.

  900. This paradox

  901. where somehow

  902. we lose our life

  903. if we actually

  904. attempt to save it.

  905. But we gain our life

  906. if we lose it.

  907. But how can we both

  908. gain and lose?

  909. Does it make sense?

  910. Here's what Jesus is doing.

  911. He's acknowledging

  912. the fact that

  913. our physical life

  914. is temporal.

  915. temporal.

  916. It will not last.

  917. But there is a part of us

  918. that will live on

  919. in eternity.

  920. That's our soul.

  921. So Jesus is presenting

  922. this paradox.

  923. What good is it?

  924. What good is it

  925. to live all of your life

  926. pursuing something

  927. that's going to be over

  928. before long?

  929. Why would you forfeit

  930. eternity

  931. for something

  932. that will be gone

  933. perhaps today?

  934. whoever loses his life

  935. for my sake

  936. in the gospel

  937. will save it.

  938. He doesn't have

  939. necessarily in mind

  940. this could be an implication

  941. but I don't think

  942. he has necessarily

  943. in mind this scenario

  944. where someone comes

  945. into our church service

  946. today and they hold

  947. a gun to your head

  948. and they say

  949. recant Christ

  950. or we will kill you.

  951. I don't think

  952. that's what Jesus

  953. has in mind here

  954. because our ability

  955. to be weak

  956. or strong

  957. in that moment

  958. is not the basis

  959. of our salvation.

  960. He will not reward us

  961. for staying strong

  962. and he will not

  963. take away our salvation

  964. if we have a moment

  965. of weakness

  966. or timidity

  967. though God will give us grace.

  968. That's not the point

  969. that Jesus is making.

  970. He's saying that

  971. if you're willing

  972. to let go of self

  973. if you're willing

  974. to abandon

  975. all of those things

  976. for my sake

  977. in the gospel

  978. guess what?

  979. You get this life

  980. that I offer.

  981. That's the point here.

  982. There's this gap

  983. that he's bridging

  984. between the temporal life

  985. and the eternal soul

  986. and what he's saying

  987. is that our temptation

  988. is to hold on

  989. to both things.

  990. Do you feel this struggle?

  991. It's a daily struggle

  992. isn't it?

  993. It's a daily struggle

  994. to hold on

  995. on one hand

  996. to eternity

  997. and to Christ

  998. but to have such a hard time

  999. letting go on this hand

1000. the things that you want

1001. and the things that you pursue

  1002. and the sins

1003. that really bring you pleasure

  1004. and Jesus is saying

  1005. you can't have this

  1006. and this

  1007. at the same time

  1008. it doesn't work.

  1009. Whoever gives

  1010. or saves his life

  1011. will ultimately lose it

  1012. and whoever loses

  1013. his life

  1014. for my sake

  1015. will save it

  1016. will gain it.

  1017. Jesus illustrated this

1018. in one of my favorite ways

  1019. in Matthew

  1020. I think it's chapter 13

1021. he said in verse 44

  1022. the kingdom of heaven

  1023. is like a treasure

  1024. in the field

  1025. a man found

  1026. and covered up

  1027. then in his joy

  1028. he goes and sells

  1029. all that he has

  1030. and buys that field

  1031. and again

  1032. the kingdom of heaven

  1033. is like a merchant

1034. in search of fine pearls

  1035. who on finding

  1036. one pearl

  1037. of great value

  1038. went and sold

  1039. all that he had

  1040. and bought it.

  1041. I love that illustration

  1042. so much.

  1043. That's what Jesus

  1044. is getting at

  1045. in Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  1046. Jesus is that treasure.

  1047. Jesus is that pearl

  1048. and what he's saying

  1049. is that when someone

  1050. finally sees me

  1051. as the treasure

  1052. when they see me

  1053. as the pearl

  1054. there's no cost

  1055. that they're willing

  1056. to give up

1057. in order to have me.

  1058. I'm that treasure.

  1059. I'm that pearl.

  1060. What a wonderful illustration

  1061. of discipleship.

1062. This life isn't worth it.

  1063. There is nothing here

  1064. that's worth it.

  1065. And Jesus follows it

  1066. with two rhetorical questions.

1067. What is it benefiting you

1068. to gain the whole world

  1069. if in the end

  1070. you forfeit your soul?

  1071. What good is it?

  1072. It's no good.

  1073. That's a bad bargain

  1074. Jesus is saying.

  1075. And then he says

  1076. even if you were

1077. to gain the whole world

  1078. what could you possibly

  1079. give to God

  1080. in redemption

  1081. of the soul

  1082. that you lost?

  1083. The answer?

  1084. Nothing.

  1085. Nothing.

  1086. Literally this phrase is

  1087. what man can give

1088. the price for his soul?

  1089. And the answer is

1090. no man can do that.

  1091. No man.

  1092. Which reminds me

  1093. of another parable

  1094. of Jesus

  1095. in Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

1096. The land of a rich man

  1097. Jesus said

  1098. produced plentifully.

1099. And he thought to himself

  1100. what shall I do?

  1101. For I have nowhere

  1102. to store my crops.

1103. He said I will do this.

1104. I will tear down my barns

  1105. and build larger ones.

1106. And there I will store

  1107. all my grain

  1108. and my goods.

  1109. And I will say

  1110. to my soul

  1111. soul

  1112. you have ample goods

1113. laid up for many years.

  1114. Relax

  1115. eat

  1116. drink

  1117. and be merry.

  1118. And then Jesus said

1119. but God said to him

  1120. fool

  1121. this night

  1122. your soul

  1123. is required of you.

  1124. And the things

  1125. you have prepared

  1126. whose will they be?

  1127. Jesus says

  1128. so is the one

  1129. who lays up treasure

  1130. for himself

  1131. and is not rich

  1132. toward God.

  1133. Jesus isn't saying

  1134. that wealth is sinful

  1135. in and of itself.

  1136. He's not saying

1137. that if we don't have room

  1138. that we shouldn't

  1139. make more room

  1140. for the blessings

1141. that God has given us

  1142. is not the point

  1143. that he's making there.

  1144. What's he saying?

  1145. What's the point

  1146. in living this life

  1147. for yourself

1148. if at the end of it

  1149. or what if tonight?

1150. In relation to this parable

  1151. up to this life

  1152. you're just doing

  1153. everything for yourself

  1154. trying to pursue

  1155. everything for yourself

  1156. little regard

1157. for anything that God wants.

  1158. Setting your mind

1159. on the things of man

1160. on the things of God.

1161. All of these great dreams

  1162. that you may have

  1163. but what happens

  1164. if God calls

  1165. for your soul

  1166. tonight?

1167. What good is all of that?

  1168. It's no good.

  1169. It's no good.

1170. Man spent his entire life

  1171. pursuing selfish ambition

  1172. and ignored the fact

  1173. that this life

  1174. is only temporary.

  1175. Every one of us

  1176. will stand before

  1177. God's judgment.

  1178. No amount of wealth

1179. will be able to purchase

  1180. forgiveness

  1181. and eternal life.

  1182. But Jesus

  1183. paid the full price

  1184. for sin

  1185. and he offers

  1186. forgiveness

  1187. and life

  1188. to all

  1189. who will follow

  1190. him.

  1191. That's the point.

  1192. he's calling you

  1193. to himself.

  1194. Jim Elliot

1195. was one of the five

  1196. missionaries

  1197. who lost their lives

  1198. in martyrdom

  1199. to the Alka Indians

  1200. in Ecuador.

1201. This was in the 50s,

  1202. right?

  1203. And after the fact

  1204. they began to go

  1205. through

  1206. Jim's stuff

  1207. and they found

  1208. in his journals

  1209. where he had written

  1210. a famous line

  1211. that you've heard

  1212. many times before.

  1213. He is no fool

  1214. who gives

  1215. what he cannot keep

  1216. to gain

  1217. what he cannot lose.

  1218. It's true.

  1219. But lest we think

  1220. that Jim Elliot

1221. is the word of God,

  1222. let's mention

  1223. what Paul said

  1224. about it.

  1225. Remember,

  1226. Paul's pursuit

  1227. in life

  1228. was not wealth.

  1229. Paul's pursuit

  1230. in life

  1231. was religious acumen.

  1232. And if you're

  1233. going to point

  1234. to anyone

  1235. who was

  1236. the greatest

  1237. religious mind

  1238. of their day,

  1239. you'd say,

  1240. surely it's Paul.

  1241. And yet,

  1242. what did he say

  1243. in Philippians 3?

  1244. Whatever gain

  1245. I had,

  1246. I counted

  1247. as loss

  1248. for the sake

  1249. of Christ.

  1250. Indeed,

  1251. I count everything

  1252. as a loss

  1253. because of the

  1254. surpassing

  1255. value

  1256. of knowing

  1257. Christ Jesus,

  1258. my Lord.

  1259. And then he says,

  1260. for his sake,

  1261. I have suffered

  1262. the loss

  1263. of all things

  1264. and count them

  1265. as trash

  1266. in order that

  1267. I may gain Christ

  1268. and be found

  1269. in him,

  1270. not having

  1271. my own righteousness

  1272. that comes

  1273. from the law,

  1274. but that which

  1275. comes through

  1276. faith in Christ.

  1277. The righteousness

  1278. of God

  1279. that depends

  1280. on faith.

  1281. He's using

  1282. accounting terms

  1283. for those of you

  1284. that are good

  1285. with money.

  1286. And he breaks

  1287. out his spiritual

  1288. ledger.

  1289. And he says,

  1290. on this side,

  1291. at one point

  1292. in my life,

  1293. I thought all

  1294. of these things

  1295. were in the

  1296. credit column.

  1297. I thought all

  1298. of these things

  1299. were in the

  1300. credit column,

  1301. but when I

  1302. found Christ,

  1303. I actually realized

  1304. all of those

  1305. things are actually

  1306. in the debit

  1307. column.

  1308. I was actually

  1309. bankrupt

  1310. until I found

  1311. Christ.

  1312. And all of that

  1313. stuff was so

  1314. easy to leave

  1315. behind.

  1316. Why?

  1317. Because of the

  1318. surpassing

  1319. value that I

  1320. found in Christ

  1321. Jesus,

  1322. the treasure in

  1323. the field,

  1324. and the pearl

  1325. of great price.

  1326. That's what Jesus

  1327. is saying in Mark

  1328. 8.

  1329. Follow me.

  1330. I have way more

  1331. for you than what

  1332. you think.

  1333. What I have

  1334. is worth

  1335. whatever it

  1336. takes.

  1337. Follow

  1338. me.

  1339. And then we

  1340. get to verse

  1341. 38,

  1342. and we see

  1343. what is the

  1344. consequence of

  1345. refusing this.

  1346. Look with me.

  1347. For whoever is

  1348. ashamed of me

  1349. and of my

  1350. words in this

  1351. adulterous and

  1352. sinful generation,

  1353. of him will the

  1354. Son of Man

  1355. also be ashamed

  1356. when he comes

  1357. in the glory of

  1358. his Father

  1359. with the holy

  1360. angels.

  1361. Notice Jesus

  1362. uses this title

  1363. again,

  1364. Son of Man.

  1365. He used that

  1366. before.

  1367. We talked about

  1368. it last week,

  1369. right?

  1370. It's from

  1371. Daniel 7.

  1372. It's a

  1373. messianic title.

  1374. Here's what

  1375. Daniel said about

  1376. it.

  1377. Daniel 7,

  1378. 14.

  1379. And to him

  1380. was given

  1381. dominion and

  1382. glory and a

  1383. kingdom that

  1384. all peoples,

  1385. nations,

  1386. and languages

  1387. should serve

  1388. him.

  1389. His dominion

  1390. is an

  1391. everlasting

  1392. dominion which

  1393. shall not

  1394. pass away,

  1395. and his

  1396. kingdom one

  1397. that shall

  1398. not be

  1399. destroyed.

  1400. That's what

  1401. the disciples

  1402. were expecting

  1403. in this coming,

  1404. and they were

  1405. surprised to hear

  1406. Jesus say,

  1407. no, that's not

  1408. actually what I'm

  1409. doing this time.

  1410. What I'm doing

  1411. this time is I'm

  1412. going to

  1413. suffer,

  1414. and I'm

  1415. going to

  1416. die,

  1417. and I'm

  1418. going to

  1419. raise for

  1420. your sins.

  1421. But they

  1422. were expecting

  1423. Daniel 7.

  1424. Now what is

  1425. Jesus doing?

  1426. This would have

  1427. been so great

  1428. for these men,

  1429. wouldn't it?

  1430. In the very

  1431. next conversation,

  1432. he gets to

  1433. Mark 8,

  1434. 38,

  1435. and here's what

  1436. Jesus says,

  1437. that the Son

  1438. of Man is

  1439. coming.

  1440. Fellas,

  1441. I know that's

  1442. not the purpose

  1443. of my coming

  1444. now,

  1445. but I can

  1446. assure you what

  1447. you're expecting

  1448. will come.

  1449. It's coming.

  1450. This time my

  1451. glory is veiled

  1452. as I have taken

  1453. on humanity.

  1454. It's veiled.

  1455. This time I

  1456. came alone,

  1457. but I'm going to

  1458. come later in the

  1459. fullness of the

  1460. glory of God,

  1461. and I'm going to

  1462. have the holy

  1463. angels with me who

  1464. are my messengers of

  1465. judgment, and I

  1466. will judge the

  1467. earth.

  1468. What's the point of

  1469. Jesus' statement

  1470. here?

  1471. That I may not

  1472. look like much to

  1473. you now, folks,

  1474. but I am

  1475. returning, and when

  1476. I return, it will

  1477. be for judgment.

  1478. Are you ready for

  1479. that judgment?

  1480. Are you ready for

  1481. him to return?

  1482. Because he says,

  1483. when I return,

  1484. whoever it is that's

  1485. been ashamed of

  1486. me, I'm going to

  1487. be ashamed of them

  1488. before the Father.

  1489. And he's not

  1490. talking about

  1491. embarrassment.

  1492. I've heard

  1493. preachers use this

  1494. verse to coerce

  1495. people in an altar

1496. call at the end of a

  1497. service.

  1498. They say, if you

  1499. really want to follow

  1500. Christ, you raise

  1501. your hand, you stand

  1502. up, you come down

  1503. and fill out the

  1504. card or whatever it

1505. is that you need to

  1506. do.

  1507. And they say,

  1508. now remember,

  1509. Jesus said, whoever

  1510. is ashamed of him,

  1511. that he will be

  1512. ashamed of them

  1513. before his Father.

  1514. That's not what

  1515. Jesus means here.

  1516. You're not talking

  1517. about embarrassment.

  1518. Listen to me, if

  1519. you're a believer

  1520. today, if you're a

  1521. believer today, there

  1522. is no shame in

  1523. Christ for you.

  1524. You are loved by

  1525. him.

  1526. Your position with

  1527. him is settled.

  1528. It's settled.

  1529. Whether you raise

  1530. your hand or stand

1531. up or fill out the

  1532. card or not, it's

  1533. settled.

  1534. That's not what

  1535. Jesus is saying.

  1536. He's talking about

  1537. rejection.

  1538. Those who have

  1539. refused,

  1540. to abandon

  1541. self, to follow

  1542. me, I will

  1543. reject them in

  1544. the judgment.

  1545. And it's not

  1546. something he

  1547. glories in.

  1548. It's something that

  1549. he warns of here.

  1550. He says, follow me

  1551. because if you

  1552. don't follow me, I'm

  1553. going to reject you

  1554. in the judgment.

  1555. And he's coming

  1556. back.

  1557. Are you ready?

  1558. Martin Ross lived

  1559. just outside of

  1560. Ithaca, New York

1561. at the turn of the

  1562. 20th century.

  1563. He was an

  1564. alcoholic man that

  1565. had no interest in

  1566. religion of any

  1567. sort.

  1568. But he had a

  1569. faithful wife.

  1570. Her name was

  1571. Bertha.

  1572. And she was a

  1573. believer that prayed

  1574. for him.

  1575. Their church

  1576. prayed for him

  1577. that he would be

  1578. saved.

  1579. And through God's

  1580. grace, eventually

  1581. Martin became a

  1582. Christian and he

  1583. actually spent much

  1584. of his life preaching

  1585. that gospel that had

  1586. so radically

  1587. transformed his

  1588. life.

  1589. they had a one

  1590. daughter named

  1591. Ray.

  1592. And as an adult,

  1593. her name was

  1594. Ray Miller.

  1595. She reflected on

  1596. her father's testimony

  1597. of following Christ.

  1598. And she remembered

  1599. that he had on

  1600. several occasions

  1601. made this

  1602. proclamation of

  1603. how valuable Jesus

  1604. was to him.

  1605. That he was more

  1606. valuable to him

  1607. than any of the

  1608. other things that

  1609. this life could

  1610. ever offer.

  1611. And in 1922,

  1612. Ray Miller sat

  1613. down as a 28-year-old

  1614. adult reflecting

  1615. on the testimony

  1616. of Christ as the

  1617. example of her

  1618. father's life.

  1619. And she wrote a

  1620. poem that 10

  1621. years later was

  1622. picked up by

  1623. George Beverly

  1624. Shea, set to

  1625. music, and sung

  1626. probably all over

  1627. the world at the

  1628. various Billy

  1629. Graham crusades.

  1630. He would go and

  1631. travel with Billy

  1632. Graham.

  1633. And so as Ray

  1634. Miller would reflect

  1635. on her father's

  1636. testimony, here's

  1637. what she sat down

  1638. to write.

  1639. I'd rather have

  1640. Jesus than silver

  1641. or gold.

  1642. I'd rather be his

  1643. than have riches

  1644. untold.

  1645. I'd rather have

  1646. Jesus than houses

  1647. or lands.

  1648. I'd rather be led

  1649. by his nail-pierced

  1650. hand.

  1651. You know this song,

  1652. don't you?

  1653. than to be the

  1654. king of a vast

  1655. domain and be

  1656. held in sin's

  1657. dread sway.

  1658. I'd rather have

  1659. Jesus than anything

  1660. this world affords

  1661. today.

  1662. She went on to

  1663. write, thinking of

  1664. her father, I'd

  1665. rather have Jesus

  1666. than men's applause.

  1667. I'd rather be

  1668. faithful to his

  1669. dear cause.

  1670. I'd rather have

  1671. Jesus than

  1672. worldwide fame.

  1673. I'd rather be

  1674. true to his

  1675. holy name.

  1676. Because he's

  1677. fairer than

  1678. lilies of rarest

  1679. bloom.

  1680. And he's sweeter

  1681. than honey from

  1682. out of the comb.

  1683. He's all that my

  1684. hungering spirit

  1685. needs.

  1686. I'd rather have

  1687. Jesus and let him

  1688. lead.

  1689. God's

  1690. saved.

  1691. I think Martin

  1692. Ross and Ray

  1693. Miller and Jim

  1694. Elliot and the

  1695. Apostle Paul and

  1696. George Beverly

  1697. Shea understood what

  1698. Jesus meant when he

  1699. said,

  1700. whosoever would save

  1701. his life will lose

  1702. it.

  1703. And whosoever will

1704. lose his life for my

  1705. sake and the gospel

  1706. will save it.

  1707. I think Martin

  1708. Ross would agree

  1709. with Paul in

  1710. Romans 8 when he

  1711. wrote,

  1712. for I consider that

  1713. the sufferings of

  1714. this present time are

  1715. not worth comparing

  1716. with the glory that

1717. is to be revealed in

  1718. us.

  1719. At the heart of

  1720. verses 31 to 38

  1721. is love.

  1722. Jesus says in

  1723. verse 31,

  1724. I love you so

  1725. much that I'm

  1726. coming to suffer

  1727. and to die and

  1728. to rise for your

  1729. justification and

  1730. forgiveness in life.

  1731. And then in verse

  1732. 34, he says that

  1733. the disciple will

  1734. love me enough to

  1735. deny themselves and

  1736. take up their cross

  1737. and follow me.

  1738. And so the question

1739. for each of us is,

  1740. do you find him

  1741. worth?

  1742. following.
