  1. Look with me again at verse 1.

  2. And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan,

  3. and crowds gathered to him again.

  4. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.

  5. So in the structure of Mark's gospel,

  6. Jesus has now officially left Galilee for the final time,

  7. and he is on his way to Jerusalem.

  8. We noted a few weeks ago, Luke, at this point in his narrative,

  9. is using phrases like, his face was set toward Jerusalem,

  10. meaning, not that that's directly where he was going from this point,

  11. but that his mind was on the cross.

  12. His mind was on the purpose for which he came.

  13. And everything that Jesus is doing is moving closer and closer to the cross.

  14. But before going to Jerusalem for his crucifixion,

  15. Jesus made one final tour through the region of Judea,

  16. and then across the Jordan in the area of Perea.

  17. Perea was still a part of Palestine in the day.

  18. You'll remember back when John the Baptist was murdered by King Herod.

  19. It was actually Herod's palace and prison inside the area of Perea,

  20. where John was kept and where he was murdered there.

  21. But though Jesus was getting closer and closer to the cross,

  22. notice that his pattern of ministry doesn't change at all.

  23. What is it that he does?

  24. Everywhere he went, people came to him.

  25. And what did he do?

  26. Well, he taught them.

  27. He preached the gospel to them.

  28. What gospel?

  29. The same gospel he always preached.

  30. The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  31. Repent and believe the good news.

  32. Matthew 19 tells us that at the same time as he was teaching the crowds,

  33. he was also healing the people.

  34. So even as he got closer and closer to his final days,

  35. just before the cross,

  36. Jesus is doing what he always did.

  37. He was steady.

  38. He was faithful.

  39. He was preaching the gospel.

  40. And during one of these occasions of preaching,

  41. he was confronted with a question about divorce.

  42. And Mark records for us some of the details of Jesus' teaching.

  43. But if you're like me,

  44. you come to this point in your reading of Mark's gospel,

  45. and this passage feels out of place,

  46. at least on the surface.

  47. It's like, where is this coming from?

  48. Because we know that Mark's goal,

  49. his purpose in this gospel,

  50. is to do what?

  51. Mark 1.1.

  52. To declare that Jesus is the Christ,

  53. the Son of God.

  54. That he is the Messiah.

  55. He's proclaiming the gospel through this book.

  56. And then we get to a passage like this,

  57. and it's like this whole discussion of divorce and remarriage

  58. really kind of comes out of nowhere.

  59. Like, why is it here?

  60. And why is Mark,

  61. and then also Matthew,

  62. and then in short order,

  63. Luke,

  64. all included this particular teaching of Jesus?

  65. We need to remember that in this section of Mark's gospel,

  66. it's really kind of a subsection.

  67. Jesus is, of course, moving towards the cross,

  68. but it's zeroing in on his training of the 12 disciples.

  69. He's teaching them not only the truth about his own messiahship,

  70. but he's teaching them the truth of what is real discipleship.

  71. What does it really mean to follow Christ?

  72. What is it that the life of a disciple looks like?

  73. And then we begin to understand,

  74. well, actually,

  75. this lesson fits kind of perfectly in this section,

  76. doesn't it?

  77. Biblical marriage is the foundation on which a healthy family,

  78. church,

  79. and society are built.

  80. Following the disintegration of a marriage

  81. comes the collapse of the home.

  82. Following the collapse of the home

  83. is the devastation of society as a whole.

  84. So God's design for marriage

  85. is not a random piece of teaching,

  86. but it's actually something that every disciple of Christ

  87. must take seriously.

  88. Now, what has Jesus been telling these men?

  89. He's been telling them that they're salt.

  90. And if we are the salt that God uses

  91. to preserve righteousness in the world around us,

  92. to purify the wickedness and depravity

  93. that is all around us in this world

  94. that rebels against God,

  95. if that's our responsibility,

  96. then we have to get this right.

  97. We have to get this idea of biblical marriage,

  98. of the biblical home.

  99. We have to get it right as faithful disciples.

  100. So what we're going to do this morning

  101. is take just a few minutes,

  102. and we won't be able to explore

  103. every possible discussion on this.

  104. It would take us weeks to do that.

  105. We're going to stick as close to these 12 verses as we can,

  106. and we're going to step into a short counseling session with Jesus.

  107. Let's say that we really wanted to find out

  108. what is really God's mind about marriage,

  109. what is really his thoughts on divorce and remarriage,

  110. and how can we be obedient to what he wants?

  111. Well, Jesus gives us a good look at that here, okay?

  112. The first thing I would write down,

  113. if you're keeping notes,

  114. is write down this from verses 2 through 5.

  115. Debating divorce.

  116. Debating divorce.

  117. Look at verse 2.

  118. The Pharisees came up,

  119. and in order to test him,

  120. asked,

  121. is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?

  122. And he answered them,

  123. what did Moses command you?

  124. And they said,

  125. Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce

  126. and to send her away.

  127. So as Jesus was teaching the crowds in Judea,

  128. these Pharisees approach him with this question about divorce.

  129. Matthew gives us an extra detail

  130. that brings a little more clarity to their question.

  131. Matthew chapter 19 and verse 3.

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  132. The Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking,

  133. is it lawful to divorce one's wife?

  134. And then he adds,

  135. for any cause.

  136. That brings some clarity to the question.

  137. They weren't necessarily asking about divorce as a practice in general.

  138. What they're asking the Lord is,

  139. can a man divorce his wife for any reason

  140. that he wants to divorce his wife?

  141. Are there stipulations?

  142. What can we do and what shouldn't we do?

  143. And the question was related to an ongoing dispute

  144. that was prevalent in this particular day among the Jews.

  145. The dispute had to do with what made divorce permissible.

  146. And it's interesting the way Jesus responds.

  147. He doesn't automatically go to answer their question.

  148. The first thing Jesus does,

  149. as he often did,

  150. was he asked them a question.

  151. But why?

  152. He says,

  153. well, what did Moses command you?

  154. Is that because he didn't know?

  155. Of course not.

  156. But Jesus asked these questions

  157. to draw things out of people, didn't he?

  158. What's he drawing out of these Pharisees?

  159. The true intent of their heart.

  160. Because then he got directly to what they were trying to get at.

  161. And that was this debate that was so common.

  162. It's centered on various interpretations of Deuteronomy chapter 24.

    Deuteronomy 24 chapter mention

  163. In fact, if you're keeping notes,

  164. I would write that in the margin.

  165. You can look at this later.

  166. Deuteronomy chapter 24, verses 1 through 4.

    Deuteronomy 24:1–4

  167. This is what the debate centered on.

  168. It's the only passage in the Old Testament law

  169. that deals with divorce directly.

  170. Let me read these four verses to you.

  171. Let me read these four verses.

  172. who took her to be his wife.

  173. Then her former husband, who sent her away,

  174. may not take her again to be his wife

  175. after she has been defiled,

  176. for that is an abomination to the Lord.

  177. And you shall not bring sin upon the land

  178. that the Lord your God has given you for an inheritance.

  179. This is the passage that the debate was over.

  180. But most of those four verses,

  181. they were in agreement on.

  182. It's not hard to figure out what Moses was getting at

  183. once the divorce was final,

  184. and he was giving instructions there.

  185. What the debate focused on in particular

  186. was the very first verse,

  187. that if a man found some indecency in her

  188. and gave her a certificate of divorcement,

  189. and then it carries on.

  190. What they debated is,

  191. well, what does that word indecency actually refer to?

  192. And there were two schools of thought in Jesus's day.

  193. First, there was a rabbi named Shammai.

  194. So there was the Shammai school.

  195. The Shammai school took a stricter approach to this passage,

  196. and it defined indecency as an offense

  197. that is in the realm of sexual misconduct,

  198. but comes just short of adultery.

  199. Now think about this.

  200. Adultery in the Mosaic law was punishable by death.

  201. Everyone agreed on that.

  202. Everyone knew that that would be the end of a marriage

  203. if that were to take place,

  204. because it would be the end of the life

  205. for one of the parties that were involved.

  206. So it's not referring specifically to adultery.

  207. It had to be something just short of that.

  208. So the Shammai group said,

  209. well, it must be something in the realm of sexual impropriety

  210. that doesn't quite reach full-on adultery,

  211. but it's at least headed in that direction.

  212. Perhaps exposure in some way

  213. or a flirtatious personality with other men

  214. or signaling that they are available in some way.

  215. The Shammai group said,

  216. well, that's really the only way

  217. that divorce would be appropriate

  218. and that this certificate should be provided.

  219. Well, there was a second school of thought.

  220. This was from Rabbi Hillel,

  221. and it was the liberal approach

  222. that actually took the exact opposite approach.

  223. They defined indecency in the widest possible manner.

  224. And even an excerpt from the Mishnah in this time says

  225. that Rabbi Hillel taught

  226. that even if the wife spoiled a dinner for her husband,

  227. that was reason enough for him to find indecency in her

  228. and to divorce her.

  229. Now, some of you are laughing

  230. because it's just kind of funny, isn't it?

  231. But that was in their Jewish guidelines.

  232. This guy was saying,

  233. even if you don't like the way she cooks,

  234. that's enough to find indecency,

  235. therefore you can divorce her.

  236. And then there was another extreme wing

  237. of the Hillel school.

  238. It's also recorded in the Mishnah.

  239. One man said,

  240. actually, indecency can be defined as

  241. seeing another woman that is fairer than your wife,

  242. and that's enough to find indecency in her,

  243. therefore you can divorce her

  244. and pursue the other woman.

  245. This was a common debate in Jesus' day.

  246. This is what the Pharisees were trying

  247. to drag Jesus into in this moment.

  248. And as usual, the crowds are coming to Jesus.

  249. The Pharisees are coming for Jesus

  250. because they're not asking this question

  251. to gain any kind of insight.

  252. What they're actually trying to do

  253. is turn people against the Lord.

  254. Think about it.

  255. If he were to automatically jump into the debate

  256. and take a side,

  257. he automatically excludes a portion of people

  258. that are probably in the crowd that day.

  259. He turns people against himself.

  260. That's what they were trying to get him to do.

  261. Because he's in the region of Judea and Perea,

  262. that's the place where John the Baptist was murdered.

  263. Perhaps Herod is still in the area.

  264. Maybe what they were trying to do

  265. is get him to take the stricter approach

  266. in what he was saying

  267. in order that they could pull the Herodians into it

  268. and could actually have him imprisoned

  269. just like John was imprisoned

  270. for speaking against Herod's marriage.

  271. So don't take this passage

  272. as if the Pharisees are actually trying

  273. to learn Jesus' opinion.

  274. They don't actually care about that.

  275. In fact, Mark tells us.

  276. They came in order that they might test him.

  277. They're trying to destroy him,

  278. not actually gain any kind of insight.

  279. And then look at verse five.

  280. This is how Jesus initially responds.

  281. Jesus said to them,

  282. because of the hardness of your heart,

  283. he wrote you this commandment.

  284. No, Jesus says.

  285. Moses didn't write that

  286. so that you could find

  287. whatever reason possible to divorce your wife.

  288. He wrote that as a protection for the wives

  289. because of the hardness

  290. and the rebellion of your own heart.

  291. Deuteronomy 24, 1 through 4

  292. isn't meant to condone the practice of divorce.

  293. That's not God saying that he gives approval

  294. to the ending of marriage.

  295. It was given as a means of protection

  296. because there were going to be a lot of wives

  297. who inevitably were going to be mistreated

  298. in this process.

  299. Think about it.

  300. Some were saying,

  301. just because someone else is prettier,

  302. just because someone else cooks better,

  303. that's enough for you to abandon this woman,

  304. for you to send her away,

  305. which would have radically altered her life.

  306. If her parents were dead at that point,

  307. she literally has nothing,

  308. no place to live,

  309. no source of income,

  310. all of her security is gone,

  311. and there's a huge group of people

  312. saying that that's okay.

  313. And God, knowing the hardness

  314. and the rebellion of the hearts of these men,

  315. adds a law in that would provide

  316. some type of protection for these women.

  317. So Jesus' first step here

  318. was to insist that the debate itself was wrong.

  319. They were debating the wrong thing

  320. about Deuteronomy 24.

  321. Instead of trying to determine

  322. how easy it is to divorce their wives,

  323. they should have been thinking about

  324. why the law was actually given

  325. in the first place.

  326. But they'd gotten distracted.

  327. So Jesus reminds them,

  328. that's there because of your hardness of heart,

  329. because of your sin, that's there.

  330. So we see the debate of divorce.

  331. Secondly, look with me at divine design.

  332. Divine design.

  333. Jesus goes on from there

  334. and he begins to explain

  335. a biblical approach,

  336. a godly approach to marriage.

  337. Verse six,

  338. but from the beginning of creation,

  339. God made them male and female.

  340. Therefore, a man shall leave his father

  341. and mother and hold fast to his wife

  342. and the two shall become one flesh.

  343. So they are no longer two,

  344. but one flesh.

  345. So instead of appealing

  346. to the popular positions

  347. of the other rabbis,

  348. Jesus neither fixated on the law,

  349. nor did he fixate

  350. on the opinions of others.

  351. He appealed to God's intended design

  352. for marriage

  353. as a creation ordinance.

  354. Did you notice that?

  355. Jesus doesn't go back to Deuteronomy

  356. as he deals with this.

  357. He goes back to Genesis

  358. as he deals with this.

  359. And immediately,

  360. he reminds the people gathered there that day

  361. that marriage is not man's idea.

  362. Neither is marriage simply a social construct.

  363. Marriage is God's idea

  364. and it is by God's design.

  365. It was instituted by him.

  366. It was designed by him.

  367. Therefore, our thoughts on marriage

  368. and divorce and remarriage

  369. must be governed by God's intention

  370. in establishing marriage

  371. in the first place.

  372. So Jesus doesn't go back

  373. to Deuteronomy 24.

  374. He goes back to Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  375. and Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  376. And he quotes two verses there.

  377. The first one is Genesis 127.

  378. So God created man in his own image.

  379. In the image of God,

  380. he created him.

  381. Male and female,

  382. he created them.

  383. And then he quotes Genesis 2.24.

  384. Therefore,

  385. a man shall leave his father

  386. and his mother

  387. and hold fast to his wife

  388. and they shall become one flesh.

  389. So much can be said about these verses,

  390. including the fact

  391. that God's design for marriage

  392. is both heterosexual

  393. and monogamous.

  394. God set the boundaries

  395. of this institution,

  396. not man.

  397. He determined that marriage

  398. must be between a man

  399. and a woman

  400. and it must be exclusive

  401. to that particular man

  402. and woman.

  403. So then beginning there

  404. and following all throughout

  405. the scripture,

  406. all notions of homosexuality

  407. and polygamy

  408. are perversions of God's design

  409. and they issue only

  410. as a result of our sin.

  411. But Jesus' main point

  412. in quoting these verses

  413. is not just to establish

  414. heterosexual monogamous marriage.

  415. His main point

  416. in quoting these verses

  417. is to show God's intention

  418. for permanence

  419. in the marital bond.

  420. And he says,

  421. because two people

  422. become one flesh.

  423. One flesh.

  424. It's not merely a reference

  425. to the sexual relationship

  426. within marriage.

  427. It relates to the whole human existence.

  428. Marriage,

  429. two people unite

  430. in every facet of life.

  431. It's not two individuals

  432. functioning within a social,

  433. construct,

  434. but marriage

  435. is the unique

  436. one flesh union

  437. that is superior to

  438. and unlike

  439. every other relationship

  440. in life.

  441. Those of you who have children

  442. remember the experience

  443. of holding your children

  444. in your arms

  445. for the first time

  446. after their birth.

  447. And in that moment

  448. you feel something

  449. unlike you've ever felt before.

  450. You sense a love

  451. for something

  452. that has never even known you,

  453. that has done nothing

  454. for you

  455. and there's a uniqueness

  456. to that relationship.

  457. But I am not one flesh

  458. with Ashlyn and Harper.

  459. As much as I love them,

  460. as much as I care about them,

  461. as unique as our relationship is

  462. as father and daughter,

  463. it will never be anything

  464. like my relationship

  465. to Julie.

  466. Why?

  467. Because in marriage

  468. God takes two people

  469. and makes them one.

  470. It's not merely an agreement.

  471. It's not a living situation.

  472. It is something supernatural

  473. that takes place

  474. in those moments

  475. as God

  476. brings this union together.

  477. And this union

  478. is never

  479. meant

  480. to be severed.

  481. that's Jesus' point.

  482. In fact,

  483. it was only

  484. after sin

  485. entered the world

  486. that divorce

  487. was even a possibility.

  488. It's never something

  489. that pleases the Lord.

  490. And he goes on

  491. to say it

  492. in verse 9.

  493. What therefore

  494. God has joined together.

  495. Now wait a minute,

  496. I thought that

  497. I thought that

  498. Julie and I were married

  499. because

  500. I

  501. pursued her

  502. and I wooed her

  503. and I did all the things

  504. that you're supposed to do

  505. and she

  506. was convinced

  507. in some way

  508. and we hurried up

  509. and got that taken care of.

  510. We got that contract signed

  511. so we could lock her in.

  512. Isn't that why we're married?

  513. Isn't that what makes us married?

  514. Well no,

  515. that's not what Jesus says actually.

  516. Jesus says

  517. it's not Jared and Julie

  518. that have brought

  519. this union together.

  520. He says

  521. what God has joined together.

  522. God has done this work

  523. in your marriage.

  524. God has done this

  525. one flesh action

  526. and he says

  527. therefore

  528. what God has joined together

  529. let no man separate.

  530. God designed marriage.

  531. God sovereignly unites

  532. two people together

  533. in that bond of marriage

  534. and it's not for man

  535. to destroy

  536. the work

  537. that God has done.

  538. That's Jesus' point here.

  539. Start arguing over

  540. what's

  541. permissible

  542. when it comes to divorce.

  543. Moses only wrote that

  544. because of your sin.

  545. Start worrying about

  546. God's design in marriage

  547. Jesus says

  548. and what God

  549. has brought together

  550. no man

  551. should separate.

  552. James Edwards

  553. insightfully writes

  554. on this verse

  555. Jesus endeavors

  556. to recover

  557. God's will

  558. for marriage

  559. not to argue

  560. about possible

  561. exceptions to it.

  562. His opponents

  563. ask what is permissible.

  564. he points

  565. to what is

  566. commanded.

  567. Before we move on

  568. I want you to notice

  569. something in this exchange

  570. between Jesus

  571. and the Pharisees.

  572. I want you to notice

  573. how they both

  574. use the phrase

  575. amen.

  576. Amen.

  577. Not amen

  578. but a man.

  579. Verses 2 and 4

  580. the Pharisees use it.

  581. Look at verse 2.

  582. And the Pharisees

  583. came up in order

  584. to test him

  585. and asked

  586. is it lawful

  587. for a man

  588. to divorce his wife.

  589. And then again

  590. in verse 4.

  591. They said

  592. Moses allowed

  593. a man

  594. to write

  595. a certificate

  596. of divorce

  597. and to send

  598. her away.

  599. There's a clear

  600. sense of superiority

  601. even in the way

  602. that they think

  603. about the issue

  604. isn't there?

  605. In their minds

  606. their wives

  607. were lesser people

  608. meant only

  609. to service

  610. their desires.

  611. And if they failed

  612. to do so

  613. these men

  614. considered them

  615. disposable.

  616. So when they

  617. come to the conversation

  618. with Jesus

  619. all they're concerned

  620. about is what

  621. they can do

  622. as husbands

  623. to find an out

  624. should they find

  625. the indecency

  626. that they want

  627. to get out of

  628. in marriage.

  629. But then notice

  630. how Jesus uses it

  631. in verses 7 and 9.

  632. Look first

  633. at verse 7.

  634. Therefore

  635. a man

  636. shall what?

  637. Leave his father

  638. and mother

  639. and hold fast

  640. to his wife.

  641. And again

  642. in verse 9.

  643. What therefore

  644. God has joined

  645. together

  646. let not

  647. a man

  648. separate.

  649. So then

  650. Jesus here

  651. puts the

  652. responsibility

  653. of preserving

  654. and protecting

  655. the marriage

  656. squarely

  657. on the shoulders

  658. of husbands.

  659. Do you see that?

  660. They thought

  661. I'm superior

  662. to my wife

  663. therefore

  664. whatever displeases

  665. me about her

  666. I have the power

  667. to get rid of her

  668. and to pursue

  669. something different.

  670. And Jesus says

  671. no you've actually

  672. got the responsibility

  673. to hold this together.

  674. This is on you

  675. husband.

  676. He insisted

  677. that it's first

  678. man's responsibility

  679. to forsake

  680. father and mother.

  681. To do what?

  682. Hold fast.

  683. Not look

  684. for the loopholes

  685. but to cling

  686. to her.

  687. The King James

  688. as I have it memorized

  689. in the book

  690. of Genesis

  691. says cleave.

  692. To cleave

  693. to her.

  694. To grab her.

  695. To hold tight

  696. to her.

  697. To never let her go.

  698. This is on us men.

  699. He insists

  700. that that responsibility

  701. falls to us

  702. and then he declares

  703. that no man

  704. should endeavor

  705. to separate

  706. what God

  707. has brought together.

  708. Men

  709. the responsibility

  710. of preserving

  711. and protecting

  712. our marriages

  713. falls on us

  714. and shame on us

  715. if it's our wives

  716. that are the ones

  717. fighting to keep

  718. things together.

  719. What did God say

  720. in Malachi chapter 2?

    Malachi 2 chapter mention

  721. For the man

  722. who does not

  723. love his wife

  724. but divorces her

  725. says the Lord

  726. the God of Israel

  727. covers his garment

  728. with violence

  729. says the Lord

  730. of hosts

  731. so guard yourselves

  732. in your spirit

  733. and do not

  734. be faithless.

  735. What do we discern

  736. from Malachi's writing?

  737. God hates divorce

  738. and he expects

  739. that men

  740. would be the ones

  741. working

  742. to preserve

  743. and protect

  744. their marriages

  745. and this doesn't

  746. absolve

  747. our wives

  748. from their part

  749. but I do believe

  750. that men

  751. will face

  752. the greater judgment

  753. in this.

  754. Bottom line

  755. is God

  756. hates divorce

  757. and as his disciples

  758. so should we.

  759. What God

  760. has joined together

  761. let no man

  762. separate.

  763. Thirdly

  764. discussing

  765. remarriage

  766. discussing

  767. remarriage

  768. we've seen

  769. debating divorce

  770. we've seen

  771. divine design

  772. and then finally

  773. with the disciples

  774. in verses 10

  775. through 12

  776. we see discussing

  777. remarriage

  778. and in the house

  779. the disciples

  780. asked him again

  781. about this matter

  782. and he said

  783. to them

  784. whoever divorces

  785. his wife

  786. and marries

  787. another

  788. commits adultery

  789. against her

  790. and if she

  791. divorces her husband

  792. and marries

  793. another

  794. she commits

  795. adultery

  796. those are

  797. shocking statements

  798. who of us

  799. would ever think

  800. that that would be

  801. the accusation

  802. brought against us

  803. for an unbiblical

  804. marriage

  805. divorce

  806. and remarriage

  807. but that's what

  808. Jesus tells his

  809. disciples

  810. we won't go into

  811. it now

  812. but it's clear

  813. that the 12

  814. had largely

  815. adopted

  816. the view

  817. of the culture

  818. around them

  819. in fact

  820. in Matthew's

  821. account

  822. they're so

  823. alarmed

  824. and shocked

  825. by Jesus'

  826. statement here

  827. that they say

  828. well

  829. it's probably

  830. better to

  831. never get married

  832. and Jesus

  833. corrects that

  834. view as well

  835. but in their

  836. minds it would

  837. be impossible

  838. to live that

  839. way

  840. how could you

  841. live in a

  842. lifelong

  843. monogamous

  844. relationship

  845. the disciples

  846. are thinking

  847. so influenced

  848. by the culture

  849. that they're

  850. surrounded by

  851. and yet I think

  852. this is the

  853. reason that the

  854. gospel authors

  855. include this

  856. teaching on

  857. divorce

  858. because Christians

  859. must be faithful

  860. to God's

  861. design

  862. if we aren't

  863. who will be

  864. how will God

  865. be glorified

  866. in his

  867. design for

  868. marriage

  869. and the

  870. family

  871. and the

  872. home

  873. and the

  874. church

  875. and society

  876. at large

  877. if disciples

  878. ignore

  879. his command

  880. in marriage

  881. so the

  882. conversation

  883. inevitably

  884. turns later

  885. in the house

  886. to the issue

  887. of remarriage

  888. after divorce

  889. has taken

  890. place

  891. not only

  892. did Jesus

  893. teach that

  894. divorce

  895. in general

  896. is a sin

  897. but that

  898. those who

  899. remarry

  900. are guilty

  901. of adultery

  902. against their

  903. former spouse

  904. there's three

  905. things I want

  906. to note here

  907. just to bring

  908. some clarification

  909. first thing

  910. is this

  911. Jesus'

  912. references

  913. to divorce

  914. in verses

  915. 10-12

  916. relate to

  917. divorce

  918. for unbiblical

  919. reasons

  920. such as the

  921. Pharisees had

  922. earlier

  923. argued

  924. he's not

  925. saying that

  926. every possible

  927. divorce

  928. is unbiblical

  929. despised by

  930. the Lord

  931. and therefore

  932. you are in

  933. adultery

  934. if you

  935. remarry

  936. that's not

  937. what Jesus

  938. is saying

  939. he's referring

  940. back to what

  941. the Pharisees

  942. said

  943. is it okay

  944. for us

  945. to divorce

  946. our wives

  947. for any

  948. reason

  949. and Jesus

  950. says

  951. no

  952. and if you

  953. do and

  954. you remarry

  955. it's like

  956. committing

  957. adultery

  958. against your

  959. wife

  960. okay

  961. that's the

  962. first

  963. clarification

  964. the second

  965. clarification

  966. I want to

  967. make

  968. is that

  969. it's worth

  970. noting that

  971. read marriage

  972. I don't

  973. believe

  974. puts a

  975. person

  976. in a

  977. perpetual

  978. state

  979. of adultery

  980. I don't

  981. think Jesus

  982. is saying

  983. now that

  984. you're

  985. married

  986. you're

  987. locked

  988. in as

  989. an adulterer

  990. for the

  991. duration

  992. of this

  993. marriage

  994. I think

  995. he's

  996. referencing

  997. a single

  998. action

  999. in the

  1000. beginning

  1001. of the

  1002. marriage

  1003. relationship

  1004. I think

  1005. that's

  1006. what Jesus

  1007. is dealing

  1008. with here

  1009. not this

  1010. perpetual

  1011. state

  1012. where if

  1013. you've

  1014. been

  1015. remarried

  1016. you're

  1017. just

  1018. an

  1019. adulterer

  1020. forever

  1021. I don't

  1022. think

  1023. that's

  1024. what

  1025. Jesus

  1026. is

  1027. saying

  1028. he's

  1029. talking

  1030. about

  1031. a single

  1032. action

  1033. therefore

  1034. it wouldn't

  1035. be God's

  1036. desire

  1037. then

  1038. for you

  1039. to absolve

  1040. yourself

  1041. of some

  1042. kind of

  1043. guilt

  1044. by divorcing

  1045. again

  1046. that wouldn't

  1047. be what

  1048. God wants

  1049. I don't

  1050. think he

  1051. abused

  1052. the adultery

  1053. in that

  1054. way

  1055. and the

  1056. third

  1057. thing

  1058. is this

  1059. suppose

  1060. one is

  1061. divorced

  1062. for

  1063. unbiblical

  1064. reasons

  1065. but remains

  1066. single

  1067. I think

  1068. according

  1069. to Jesus

  1070. and then

  1071. again

  1072. according

  1073. to

  1074. the

  1075. apostle

  1076. Paul

  1077. to

  1078. the

  1079. Corinthian

  1080. church

  1081. that

  1082. individual

  1083. should

  1084. not

  1085. pursue

  1086. marriage

  1087. again

  1088. unless

  1089. it's

  1090. with

  1091. their

  1092. first

  1093. spouse

  1094. who

  1095. also

  1096. remains

  1097. single

  1098. let me

  1099. read you

  1100. this

  1101. from

  1102. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 7:10

  1103. 7

  1104. verses

  1105. 10

  1106. and

  1107. 11

  1108. Paul

  1109. writes

  1110. to

  1111. the

  1112. married

  1113. I

  1114. give

  1115. this

  1116. charge

  1117. not

  1118. I

  1119. but

  1120. the

  1121. Lord

  1122. in

  1123. other

  1124. words

  1125. this

  1126. is

  1127. what

  1128. the

  1129. Lord

  1130. taught

  1131. Jesus

  1132. taught

  1133. while

  1134. he

  1135. was

  1136. on

  1137. earth

  1138. the

  1139. wife

  1140. should

  1141. not

  1142. separate

  1143. from

  1144. her

  1145. husband

  1146. but

  1147. if

  1148. she

  1149. does

  1150. she

  1151. should

  1152. remain

  1153. unmarried

  1154. or

  1155. else

  1156. be

  1157. reconciled

  1158. to

  1159. her

  1160. husband

  1161. and

  1162. the

  1163. husband

  1164. should

  1165. not

  1166. divorce

  1167. his

  1168. wife

  1169. what's

  1170. Paul

  1171. getting

  1172. at

  1173. well

  1174. if

  1175. you

  1176. do

  1177. divorce

  1178. you

  1179. need

  1180. to

  1181. stay

  1182. single

  1183. if

  1184. at

  1185. least

  1186. the

  1187. divorce

  1188. was

  1189. for

  1190. an

  1191. unbiblical

  1192. reason

  1193. you

  1194. don't

  1195. need

  1196. to

  1197. pursue

  1198. it

  1199. again

  1200. that's

  1201. what

  1202. the

  1203. Lord

  1204. was

  1205. teaching

  1206. his

  1207. disciples

  1208. as

  1209. well

  1210. where

  1211. we

  1212. get

  1213. to

  1214. at

  1215. the

  1216. end

  1217. of

  1218. this

  1219. divorce

  1220. and

  1221. remarriage

  1222. are

  1223. serious

  1224. issues

  1225. and

  1226. we

  1227. don't

  1228. need

  1229. to

  1230. take

  1231. a

  1232. casual

  1233. approach

  1234. to

  1235. them

  1236. we

  1237. need

  1238. to

  1239. treat

  1240. them

  1241. the

  1242. way

  1243. that

  1244. Jesus

  1245. treated

  1246. them

  1247. and

  1248. we

  1249. need

  1250. to

  1251. discern

  1252. what

  1253. the

  1254. Bible

  1255. has

  1256. told

  1257. us

  1258. now

  1259. to

  1260. conclude

  1261. I

  1262. want

  1263. to

  1264. recognize

  1265. just

  1266. three

  1267. important

  1268. notes

  1269. here

  1270. in

  1271. relation

  1272. to

  1273. the

  1274. whole

  1275. topic

  1276. as

  1277. we

  1278. talk

  1279. about

  1280. it

  1281. again

  1282. we

  1283. could

  1284. take

  1285. weeks

  1286. to

  1287. talk

  1288. about

  1289. this

  1290. and

  1291. there

  1292. are

  1293. lots

  1294. of

  1295. questions

  1296. that

  1297. come

  1298. up

  1299. and

  1300. !

  1301. hypothetical

  1302. situations

  1303. for us

  1304. to

  1305. reason

  1306. and

  1307. we

  1308. are

  1309. talking

  1310. in

  1311. more

  1312. blanket

  1313. statements

  1314. here

  1315. but

  1316. there

  1317. are

  1318. three

  1319. things

  1320. that

  1321. might

  1322. be

  1323. an

  1324. encouragement

  1325. to

  1326. you

  1327. in

  1328. this

  1329. the

  1330. first

  1331. thing

  1332. is

  1333. this

  1334. is

  1335. it

  1336. ever

  1337. okay

  1338. to

  1339. get

  1340. a

  1341. divorce

  1342. does

  1343. the

  1344. Bible

  1345. actually

  1346. provide

  1347. allowances

  1348. for

  1349. divorce

  1350. or

  1351. are

  1352. you

  1353. locked

  1354. in

  1355. no

  1356. matter

  1357. what

  1358. and

  1359. now

  1360. that

  1361. we

  1362. understand

  1363. and

  1364. have

  1365. looked

  1366. thoroughly

  1367. at

  1368. God's

  1369. design

  1370. for

  1371. marriage

  1372. and

  1373. Jesus

  1374. approach

  1375. to

  1376. now

  1377. I

  1378. think

  1379. and

  1380. only

  1381. now

  1382. can

  1383. we

  1384. look

  1385. at

  1386. the

  1387. exception

  1388. clauses

  1389. that

  1390. are

  1391. listed

  1392. in

  1393. the

  1394. scripture

  1395. there's

  1396. two

  1397. of

  1398. them

  1399. the

  1400. first

  1401. one

  1402. is

  1403. this

  1404. sexual

  1405. sin

  1406. in

  1407. the

  1408. marriage

  1409. sexual

  1410. sin

  1411. in

  1412. the

  1413. marriage

  1414. Jesus

  1415. taught

  1416. that

  1417. sexual

  1418. immorality

  1419. by one

  1420. spouse

  1421. makes

  1422. the

  1423. pursuit

  1424. of a

  1425. divorce

  1426. by the

  1427. other

  1428. spouse

  1429. justifiable

  1430. so if

  1431. you've

  1432. been

  1433. divorced

  1434. because

  1435. your

  1436. spouse

  1437. was

  1438. unfaithful

  1439. I don't

  1440. want you

  1441. to think

  1442. that you've

  1443. sinned

  1444. against

  1445. the

  1446. Lord

  1447. Jesus

  1448. made

  1449. this

  1450. clear

  1451. Matthew

    Matthew 5:31

  1452. chapter

  1453. 5

  1454. verse

  1455. 31

  1456. it was

  1457. also

  1458. said

  1459. this is

  1460. Jesus

  1461. speaking

  1462. whoever

  1463. divorces

  1464. his

  1465. wife

  1466. let him

  1467. give her

  1468. a

  1469. certificate

  1470. of

  1471. divorce

  1472. but

  1473. I

  1474. say

  1475. to

  1476. you

  1477. that

  1478. everyone

  1479. who

  1480. divorces

  1481. his

  1482. wife

  1483. except

  1484. on the

  1485. ground

  1486. of

  1487. sexual

  1488. immorality

  1489. Jesus

  1490. says

  1491. makes

  1492. her

  1493. commit

  1494. adultery

  1495. adultery

  1496. and

  1497. again

  1498. in

  1499. Matthew's

  1500. account

  1501. of

  1502. this

  1503. event

  1504. that

  1505. Mark

  1506. is

  1507. dealing

  1508. with

  1509. in

  1510. Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  1511. chapter

  1512. 10

  1513. Jesus

  1514. says

  1515. the

  1516. same

  1517. thing

  1518. Matthew

  1519. 19

  1520. 9

  1521. and

  1522. I

  1523. say

  1524. to

  1525. you

  1526. whoever

  1527. divorces

  1528. his

  1529. wife

  1530. except

  1531. for

  1532. sexual

  1533. immorality

  1534. and marries

  1535. another

  1536. commits

  1537. adultery

  1538. the

  1539. word

  1540. there

  1541. is

  1542. pornea

  1543. it's

  1544. the

  1545. same

  1546. word

  1547. we

  1548. get

  1549. pornography

  1550. from

  1551. and

  1552. it

  1553. has

  1554. a

  1555. wide

  1556. range

  1557. of

  1558. meaning

  1559. when

  1560. it

  1561. comes

  1562. to

  1563. sexual

  1564. immorality

  1565. and

  1566. it

  1567. will

  1568. go

  1569. as

  1570. far

  1571. as

  1572. adultery

  1573. and

  1574. on

  1575. the

  1576. other

  1577. end

  1578. to

  1579. just

  1580. an

  1581. addiction

  1582. to

  1583. pornography

  1584. I

  1585. think

  1586. all

  1587. of

  1588. those

  1589. things

  1590. would

  1591. be

  1592. included

  1593. in

  1594. what

  1595. Jesus

  1596. is

  1597. saying

  1598. here

  1599. and

  1600. he's

  1601. saying

  1602. look

  1603. except

  1604. on

  1605. the

  1606. grounds

  1607. of

  1608. sexual

  1609. immorality

  1610. and

  1611. adultery

  1612. you

  1613. shouldn't

  1614. divorce

  1615. your

  1616. spouse

  1617. so

  1618. sexual

  1619. sin

  1620. in

  1621. a

  1622. marriage

  1623. would

  1624. be

  1625. one

  1626. exception

  1627. to

  1628. this

  1629. but

  1630. there's

  1631. a

  1632. second

  1633. one

  1634. I

  1635. think

  1636. that

  1637. Paul

  1638. deals

  1639. with

  1640. in

  1641. 1

  1642. Corinthians

  1643. 7

  1644. and

  1645. this

  1646. is

  1647. desertion

  1648. by

  1649. an

  1650. unbelieving

  1651. spouse

  1652. so

  1653. 1

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  1654. Corinthians

  1655. chapter

  1656. 7

  1657. and

  1658. verse

  1659. 12

  1660. to

  1661. the

  1662. rest

  1663. I

  1664. say

  1665. that

  1666. if

  1667. any

  1668. brother

  1669. has

  1670. a

  1671. wife

  1672. who

  1673. is

  1674. an

  1675. unbeliever

  1676. and

  1677. she

  1678. consents

  1679. to

  1680. live

  1681. with

  1682. him

  1683. he

  1684. should

  1685. not

  1686. divorce

  1687. her

  1688. if

  1689. any

  1690. woman

  1691. has

  1692. a

  1693. husband

  1694. who

  1695. is

  1696. an

  1697. unbeliever

  1698. and

  1699. he

  1700. consents

  1701. to

  1702. live

  1703. with

  1704. her

  1705. she

  1706. should

  1707. not

  1708. divorce

  1709. him

  1710. for

  1711. the

  1712. unbelieving

  1713. husband

  1714. is

  1715. made

  1716. holy

  1717. because

  1718. of

  1719. his

  1720. wife

  1721. and

  1722. the

  1723. unbelieving

  1724. wife

  1725. is

  1726. made

  1727. holy

  1728. because

  1729. of

  1730. her

  1731. husband

  1732. but

  1733. if

  1734. the

  1735. unbelieving

  1736. partner

  1737. separates

  1738. let

  1739. it

  1740. be

  1741. so

  1742. in

  1743. such

  1744. cases

  1745. the

  1746. brother

  1747. or

  1748. sister

  1749. is

  1750. not

  1751. unbelieving

  1752. spouse

  1753. leaves

  1754. you

  1755. as a

  1756. result

  1757. of

  1758. your

  1759. faith

  1760. and

  1761. commitment

  1762. to

  1763. the

  1764. gospel

  1765. then

  1766. you

  1767. are

  1768. free

  1769. biblically

  1770. you

  1771. are

  1772. free

  1773. from

  1774. enslavement

  1775. to

  1776. those

  1777. marital

  1778. laws

  1779. let

  1780. it

  1781. be

  1782. so

  1783. Paul

  1784. says

  1785. those

  1786. are

  1787. the

  1788. two

  1789. exceptions

  1790. that

  1791. the

  1792. Bible

  1793. gives

  1794. we

  1795. need

  1796. to

  1797. remember

  1798. those

  1799. we

  1800. can't

  1801. neglect

  1802. them

  1803. we

  1804. need

  1805. to

  1806. think

  1807. about

  1808. them

  1809. the

  1810. second

  1811. note

  1812. is

  1813. this

  1814. just

  1815. because

  1816. you

  1817. can

  1818. doesn't

  1819. mean

  1820. you

  1821. should

  1822. sexual

  1823. sin

  1824. permits

  1825. divorce

  1826. it

  1827. does

  1828. not

  1829. demand

  1830. divorce

  1831. and

  1832. reconciliation

  1833. always

  1834. always

  1835. needs

  1836. to be

  1837. the

  1838. priority

  1839. in our

  1840. marriages

  1841. what

  1842. Jesus

  1843. had in

  1844. mind

  1845. here

  1846. when

  1847. he

  1848. gives

  1849. this

  1850. exception

  1851. on the

  1852. grounds

  1853. of

  1854. sexual

  1855. immorality

  1856. what

  1857. he

  1858. had

  1859. in

  1860. mind

  1861. was

  1862. a

  1863. spouse

  1864. who

  1865. was

  1866. a

  1867. serial

  1868. adulterer

  1869. unrepentant

  1870. careless

  1871. about

  1872. his

  1873. sin

  1874. desiring

  1875. to

  1876. pursue

  1877. his

  1878. own

  1879. sinful

  1880. appetite

  1881. no

  1882. matter

  1883. what

  1884. that's

  1885. what

  1886. Jesus

  1887. has

  1888. in

  1889. mind

  1890. to

  1891. the

  1892. point

  1893. that

  1894. a

  1895. biblically

  1896. healthy

  1897. marriage

  1898. is

  1899. not

  1900. even

  1901. a

  1902. possibility

  1903. I

  1904. don't

  1905. think

  1906. what

  1907. Jesus

  1908. had

  1909. in

  1910. mind

  1911. was

  1912. a

  1913. single

  1914. offense

  1915. or

  1916. that

  1917. he

  1918. was

  1919. demanding

  1920. that

  1921. a

  1922. single

  1923. offense

  1924. of

  1925. adultery

  1926. or

  1927. sexual

  1928. impropriety

  1929. is

  1930. enough

  1931. to

  1932. automatically

  1933. hit

  1934. the

  1935. divorce

  1936. button

  1937. and

  1938. I

  1939. think

  1940. there

  1941. are

  1942. Christians

  1943. who

  1944. are

  1945. unsatisfied

  1946. in their

  1947. marriages

  1948. in one

  1949. way or

  1950. another

  1951. and it's

  1952. almost

  1953. as if

  1954. they use

  1955. the

  1956. sexual

  1957. appetite

  1958. of their

  1959. spouse

  1960. as a

  1961. reason

  1962. to

  1963. get

  1964. what

  1965. they

  1966. want

  1967. not

  1968. because

  1969. they're

  1970. really

  1971. all that

  1972. bothered

  1973. about

  1974. the

  1975. impropriety

  1976. but

  1977. because

  1978. they

  1979. want

  1980. out

  1981. of

  1982. the

  1983. marriage

  1984. and

  1985. that's

  1986. their

  1987. reason

  1988. but

  1989. Jesus

  1990. I

  1991. don't

  1992. think

  1993. had

  1994. in

  1995. mind

  1996. here

  1997. a

  1998. spirit

  1999. that

  2000. as soon

  2001. as you

  2002. cross

  2003. the

  2004. line

  2005. you're

  2006. done

  2007. he's

  2008. not

  2009. demanding

  2010. divorce

  2011. he's

  2012. only

  2013. permitting

  2014. it

  2015. and

  2016. what

  2017. he

  2018. has

  2019. in

  2020. mind

  2021. is

  2022. an

  2023. unrepentant

  2024. person

  2025. and

  2026. we

  2027. can

  2028. begin

  2029. to

  2030. apply

  2031. other

  2032. biblical

  2033. principles

  2034. here

  2035. Christians

  2036. are to

  2037. be

  2038. forgiving

  2039. people

  2040. they're

  2041. not

  2042. to

  2043. be

  2044. vindictive

  2045. people

  2046. and

  2047. if a

  2048. spouse

  2049. sins

  2050. but

  2051. desires

  2052. to

  2053. restore

  2054. the

  2055. marriage

  2056. in

  2057. repentance

  2058. as

  2059. hard

  2060. as

  2061. it

  2062. is

  2063. I

  2064. think

  2065. the

  2066. hurt

  2067. spouse

  2068. needs

  2069. to

  2070. at

  2071. least

  2072. first

  2073. seek

  2074. to

  2075. forgive

  2076. and

  2077. reconcile

  2078. and

  2079. it's

  2080. at

  2081. this

  2082. point

  2083. that

  2084. we

  2085. really

  2086. begin

  2087. to

  2088. allow

  2089. the

  2090. gospel

  2091. to

  2092. shape

  2093. our

  2094. marriages

  2095. is

  2096. this

  2097. not

  2098. Christ

  2099. approach

  2100. to

  2101. his

  2102. church

  2103. when

  2104. his

  2105. bride

  2106. sins

  2107. against

  2108. him

  2109. does

  2110. he

  2111. cast

  2112. us

  2113. off

  2114. and

  2115. cut

  2116. us

  2117. off

  2118. no

  2119. he

  2120. forgives

  2121. so

  2122. just

  2123. because

  2124. you

  2125. can

  2126. doesn't

  2422. for

  2423. a lot

  2424. of

  2425. people

  2426. but

  2427. there's

  2428. no

  2429. reason

  2430. for

  2431. a

  2432. repentant

  2433. Christian

  2434. to

  2435. carry

  2436. that

  2437. guilt

  2438. that

  2439. God

  2440. has

  2445. you

  2446. I

  2447. want

  2458. in

  2459. faithfulness

  2460. to

  2461. him

  2462. and

  2463. in

  2464. faithfulness

  2465. to

  2466. the

  2467. spouse

  2468. that

  2469. he

  2470. has

  2471. now

  2472. blessed
