  1. Well, we often call this time of year the season of giving, right?

  2. In fact, between your family gatherings, corporate parties, school gift exchanges,

  3. charitable contributions, chances are you give more to other people this time of year

  4. in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas than probably the rest of the year combined.

  5. That's not because you don't care about people the rest of the year.

  6. It's just this is the season of giving, right?

  7. There's all kinds of things that we do, all kinds of gifts that we buy.

  8. But we all know that the quantity of gifts we give doesn't necessarily reflect a genuinely giving heart, right?

  9. Let's be honest for just a moment, okay?

  10. Some of us have some gifts under the tree that if it weren't for a particular obligation, wouldn't be there, right?

  11. There's a difference between going out and really thinking hard, as I know all of you men have done,

  12. and putting all of this time and effort into purchasing something for your wife that would express the tremendous love that you have for her.

  13. I know all of you have done that.

  14. You haven't waited until now.

  15. You've got it done.

  16. It's under the tree, right?

  17. There's a difference between doing that and going out and purchasing a gift for that distant relative,

  18. maybe a third cousin that just happens to be showing up to the family gathering this year.

  19. You know what I mean?

  20. If it wasn't for the fact that they're showing up this year, they show up once a decade,

  21. and if it wasn't for the fact that they're showing up, you wouldn't have bought them a gift.

  22. But because they're there, you can't not get them something.

  23. And so you've gone out, and your wife has sent you out, and you've picked up something for that distant relative.

  24. There's a difference in the giving between those two things, right?

  25. One is really a gift of obligation, and the other one is really a gift of love.

  26. It's one thing to go to the store and really, as Julie and I have done for our girls,

  27. to really think through gifts that would express our love for our daughters.

  28. It's a different thing, right, Joseph, to be sent out, to have to get a gift for that boy

  29. that she just insists on bringing to Christmas dinner this year, right?

  30. There's a difference in giving in those two scenarios, isn't there?

  31. And as we really think about the giving season, we think about gifts,

  32. of course, we do those things ultimately because we do care in some way.

  33. Otherwise, we wouldn't do it.

  34. Generally, we wouldn't do it.

  35. But there's a difference in the way that we give sometimes.

  36. We all do quite a bit of giving at this Christmas season.

  37. But the true spirit of giving is not founded on an obligation.

  38. It's founded on love, right?

  39. This little verse here in John chapter 3 concisely reveals to us God's perfect gift

    John 3 chapter mention

  40. given to humanity as a result of his supreme love.

  41. Remember, God's under no obligation to us.

  42. There is nothing about us that requires or pushes God to do anything for us.

  43. There's no obligation that would drive him to give us a gift.

  44. But because of his immeasurable love, he is actually giving us everything in his only son, Jesus Christ.

  45. And without a doubt, John 3.16 is the most famous verse in all of the Bible.

  46. But there is a danger that accompanies our familiarity with it.

  47. Though we all know it, and most of us could quote it even from heart, as many of you probably did just a moment ago,

  48. we may find that our hearts are somewhat dull to the magnitude of the truth conveyed in this little verse.

  49. So what my goal is this morning, and what I think should be our goal in this season of giving,

  50. is to think about what is the greatest gift that was actually ever given.

  51. A gift not given out of an obligation to man, but out of God's divine and supreme love for man.

  52. And so my purpose this morning is really not to do an exposition of John chapter 3 as much as I want to do that.

    John 3 chapter mention

  53. But we don't have time for that.

  54. But it will be helpful for us to understand just a little bit of background as to why this verse exists,

  55. why it is that Jesus has said this, or at least John has made the commentary on what was taking place with Jesus here in chapter 3.

  56. John wrote at the end of chapter 2 that at this point in Jesus' life and ministry, he had been in Jerusalem.

  57. And while he was there, we see first the righteous anger of the Lord as he turns over tables and he drives out the money changers out of the temple there.

  58. But then immediately following that, at the very end of the chapter,

  59. John says that Jesus had done a few signs and wonders and miracles, miraculous things in Jerusalem,

  60. so that many people had begun to believe in his name, is what John says.

  61. But the problem was, as John goes on to say, and what Jesus understood to be true,

  62. is that though they were excited about Jesus, they were intrigued by him, they were interested in him,

  63. none of them, or at least most of them, weren't actually committed to Jesus in faith.

  64. And so Jesus, John says, doesn't commit himself fully to those people because he knew what was true of their hearts.

  65. And what was in their hearts was really just some type of intrigue about the things that Jesus was doing.

  66. It wasn't that at this point, most of them were not committed to Jesus in faith and who he was and what he was doing.

  67. One such person was one of the leaders of the Jews, a prominent teacher of the Jews named Nicodemus.

  68. And as we get into chapter three, we find that Nicodemus, in the secrecy of the night,

  69. goes and finds Jesus in order to find out as much about him as he can.

  70. He wants to try to figure out exactly who Jesus is and what really is the purpose in him coming.

  71. In fact, at the end of the day, it's not very often that someone comes to town healing sick people with his touch,

  72. opening blinded eyes with his words.

  73. It's not very often that someone comes to town teaching with an unparalleled authority.

  74. In fact, it's only happened once in history.

  75. And Jesus was the one who did it.

  76. And he comes to town and Nicodemus can't get this guy off his mind.

  77. He's not exactly sure who he is.

  78. He says, Jesus, we know that you must be at least from God

  79. because only someone from God could do the things that you're doing and could teach in the way that you're teaching.

  80. And he's inquisitive.

  81. He's trying to figure out who is Jesus and why did he come?

  82. And in the course of that conversation, Jesus reveals to Nicodemus

  83. that all of his efforts in morality and religion were insufficient

  84. to actually grant him entry into the kingdom of God.

  85. He couldn't gain eternal life through all of the things he was doing.

  86. He had committed his entire life at this point to religious works, good works,

  87. all the things he could possibly amass in order to please God.

  88. And in the course of this conversation, Jesus basically blows all of those efforts up.

  89. And he says, none of that is actually good enough.

  90. For a person to find entry into the kingdom of God, Jesus said,

  91. he must experience a spiritual rebirth.

  92. Verse seven, Jesus plainly says, you must be born again.

  93. And of course, Nicodemus was hardened to this statement.

  94. He was confused by the statement.

  95. And so he asked for clarity.

  96. A few verses later, he says, how can these things be?

  97. And what results from that question eventually gets to verse 16,

  98. which is this wonderfully simple explanation of the gospel.

  99. And in summary, this was Jesus's response.

  100. Eternal salvation, eternal life, the kingdom of God, forgiveness of sins

  101. is only found through faith in Jesus.

  102. And it's a gift issued from the immeasurable, indescribable love of God.

  103. So then as we think about this verse in relation to Christmas,

  104. we find out that John 3.16 actually tells us why anyone should care about the birth of Jesus.

  105. Have you thought about that?

  106. There's not many births that we celebrate in this life, is there?

  107. We celebrate one another.

  108. We rejoice and we each have a designated day.

  109. How many people outside of your family, your friend, your circle of network,

  110. do you ever celebrate their birth?

  111. No one.

  112. Why is it that we should care about Jesus's birth?

  113. Well, John 3.16 tells us why.

  114. It contains the true meaning and purpose of Christmas

  115. and why Christians are so committed to celebrating it.

  116. So in our study this morning, we're going to look at this verse just quickly.

  117. And I wanted to show you three things.

  118. I want to show you what is God's perfect gift,

  119. what motivated him to give it,

  120. and how you can receive it.

  121. God's perfect gift,

  122. what motivated him to give it,

  123. and how you can receive it.

  124. If you like to keep notes, maybe you write this down.

  125. This is how I have my notes structured today.

  126. The first thing I wrote down was the gift of God.

  127. The gift of God.

  128. And I want you to go back to verse 16,

  129. except we're going to come back to the first phrase in just a minute.

  130. I want you to look at that middle phrase.

  131. John writes that he gave his only son.

  132. He gave his only son.

  133. So the perfect gift of God

  134. didn't come in a fancy box with a decorative bow.

  135. As we just read a moment ago,

  136. it was wrapped in swaddling clothes

  137. and lying in a manger in Bethlehem.

  138. Because the greatest gift that's ever been given to the world

  139. and in the world was not a thing,

  140. it was a person.

  141. God himself wrapped in human flesh.

  142. This is why Isaiah said in Isaiah 7, 14

  143. that Harper read a few moments ago

  144. or quoted a few moments ago,

  145. this is why the angel said he will be called Emmanuel,

  146. which means God is with us.

  147. God himself has become a man.

  148. God is with us.

  149. Therefore, he will have this title of Emmanuel.

  150. Christmas isn't about the birth of a man

  151. who came into existence 2,000 years ago in Palestine.

  152. That's not what Christmas is about.

  153. Christmas is about the incarnation of the one true God

  154. who has always existed and who has always been.

  155. The creator of the universe entered his creation

  156. and subjected himself to the weakness and frailty

  157. of fallen man.

  158. This is what the whole Bible's about.

  159. Philippians chapter 2 says it.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  160. Paul describes it this way

  161. and maybe one of the most comprehensive looks

  162. at the deity and incarnation of Jesus.

  163. This is what Paul wrote.

  164. Though he was in the form of God,

  165. form there meaning in his very essence,

  166. that's who he was,

  167. the unchangeable quality of who Jesus is.

  168. Though he was in the form of God,

  169. Jesus did not count equality with God

  170. a thing to be grasped.

  171. In other words,

  172. the glory that comes with being God,

  173. he was not willing to hold on to that

  174. in order that man and all men

  175. would be condemned to hell.

  176. He did not think equality with God,

  177. the glory of being God

  178. as something to be grasped,

  179. to hold on to.

  180. But Paul says,

  181. he emptied himself

  182. by taking on the form of a servant

  183. being born in the likeness of men.

  184. Form, same word.

  185. In the first half of the verse,

  186. Paul says Jesus in his very essence

  187. and who he is,

  188. the unchangeable quality of his character

  189. and of his personhood is God.

  190. And then him being God

  191. takes on the form of a man,

  192. the very essence of who he is,

  193. who that unchangeable quality now

  194. of who Jesus is,

  195. is both fully God

  196. and fully man.

  197. So what we celebrate

  198. in the birth of Christ

  199. is not the beginnings of a man,

  200. but is the incarnation of a being

  201. who created you

  202. and who created everything that you see

  203. and who has always existed.

  204. The king of all

  205. willingly became

  206. the lowliest of all.

  207. The one who is continually surrounded

  208. by the praises of angels

  209. leaves the glories of heaven

  210. to suffer at the hands of men.

  211. The creator

  212. subjects himself

  213. to his own creation

  214. in order that he might

  215. save it.

  216. And what is this

  217. according to John 3, 16?

  218. A gift.

  219. It's a gift.

  220. A perfect gift.

  221. Thou who was rich

  222. beyond all splendor,

  223. all for love's sake

  224. became as poor.

  225. Thrones for a manger

  226. did surrender.

  227. Sapphire paved courts

  228. for stable floor.

  229. Thou who was rich

  230. beyond all splendor,

  231. all for love's sake

  232. became as poor.

  233. You know,

  234. often when we think about

  235. the Christmas story,

  236. the scope of our thoughts

  237. is generally limited

  238. to this small portion

  239. of scripture

  240. in Matthew 1 and 2

  241. and Luke 1 and 2

  242. that tells specifically

  243. the nativity story.

  244. But I want to remind you

  245. again this morning

  246. that God's gift

  247. of eternal life

  248. through Jesus Christ

  249. is the main point

  250. not of Matthew 1 and 2

  251. and Luke 1 and 2

  252. but of the entire Bible.

  253. Everything in God's word

  254. speaks to this moment,

  255. to this person,

  256. to this gift.

  257. Think about it.

  258. As you understand the Bible

  259. and how it's put together,

  260. it begins with creation

  261. and the curse of suffering

  262. and death

  263. that resulted from man's sin.

  264. And then the Bible ends

  265. with God restoring all things

  266. to His intended purpose.

  267. And everything between

  268. that first creation

  269. and the final creation,

  270. everything in between

  271. in God's word

  272. is all about this Savior,

  273. this appointed deliverer from God

  274. that would come

  275. and save His people

  276. from their sins.

  277. The Savior

  278. is the gift

  279. referred to

  280. in John 3, 16.

  281. It would take me

  282. the rest of my life

  283. to explain all of that to you

  284. as we go through the scriptures.

  285. Let me just generally

  286. give you two things

  287. to think about

  288. as we think about

  289. the story of the whole Bible

  290. and how it relates

  291. to Jesus as a gift.

  292. The opening pages

  293. of the Bible

  294. tell us that God created

  295. man and woman

  296. in His image

  297. to glorify Him.

  298. Our kids have learned this.

  299. How and why

  300. did God create us, kids?

  301. God created us.

  302. Smell?

  303. They know it, right?

  304. When we learned that

  305. in our kids' class,

  306. the thing that they did

  307. to try to understand

  308. what this means

  309. is they went

  310. and they stood

  311. at the mirror

  312. where Miss Faye is sitting.

  313. And they looked

  314. at themselves in the mirror

  315. and I said,

  316. what do you see?

  317. And they said,

  318. me.

  319. You see a reflection

  320. of themselves.

  321. And the Bible says

  322. that God created

  323. Adam and Eve,

  324. man and woman,

  325. in His own image

  326. to glorify Him.

  327. It meant that He didn't

  328. create them as little gods.

  329. That's not what He meant.

  330. It means that He created them

  331. in perfect innocence

  332. to be a perfect reflection

  333. of Him,

  334. to reflect who He is

  335. and to reflect

  336. His perfect character.

  337. But Adam and Eve

  338. fell from that.

  339. God's adversary,

  340. Satan,

  341. deceived them.

  342. They disobeyed God,

  343. they sinned against God,

  344. and they fell short

  345. of the glory

  346. for which they were created.

  347. And since God

  348. is perfectly holy

  349. and just,

  350. their sin

  351. had to be punished.

  352. If He just let it go,

  353. He wouldn't be God.

  354. And He certainly

  355. wouldn't be just.

  356. But He had to punish

  357. their sin.

  358. But in the midst

  359. of this punishment,

  360. in the midst

  361. of the announcement

  362. of this curse

  363. of their sin,

  364. He gave them a promise.

  365. And the promise

  366. is that He would

  367. provide a Savior

  368. to rescue man

  369. from eternal death.

  370. In the midst

  371. of the consequences,

  372. God's grace

  373. was shining through

  374. in this promise.

  375. In Genesis 3.15,

  376. God tells man and woman

  377. after their sin,

  378. I will put enmity

  379. between you,

  380. speaking to Satan,

  381. the serpent,

  382. I will put enmity

  383. between you and the woman

  384. and between your offspring

  385. and her offspring.

  386. He shall bruise your head

  387. and you shall bruise His heel.

  388. From the very beginning

  389. of the Bible,

  390. we see the problem.

  391. This whole book,

  392. what it's about,

  393. is about God creating us

  394. for His glory.

  395. Us falling short

  396. of that glory

  397. and in desperate need

  398. of God's mercy and grace.

  399. And in the midst of that,

  400. right at the beginning,

  401. God says,

  402. I'm gonna give you a promise.

  403. I'm gonna send a deliverer,

  404. a Savior

  405. that will save you

  406. from your sins.

  407. And everything following

  408. that in the entire Scripture

  409. is about that.

  410. It all points to that.

  411. Then we get a little further

  412. in the Old Testament.

  413. And as you continue to read,

  414. you'll find that there are

  415. all of these illuminating pictures

  416. and illustrations

  417. that point to God's promise

  418. of redemption.

  419. All kinds of things.

  420. We see a picture of Israel

  421. being God redeeming His people.

  422. We see the sacrificial system

  423. in particular.

  424. Year by year,

  425. the Israelites,

  426. the people of God,

  427. were required to come

  428. in order to reflect

  429. their need for salvation.

  430. They would bring

  431. and supply for themselves

  432. a lamb.

  433. A lamb that was one year old.

  434. It had to be perfect,

  435. without blemish,

  436. spotless.

  437. And they would bring it

  438. to the temple of God

  439. or to the tabernacle of God

  440. and they would sacrifice

  441. that lamb

  442. as a reflection

  443. of their own sinfulness

  444. and of their own need

  445. for God's mercy.

  446. But the problem was

  447. that lamb was never enough.

  448. Every year,

  449. they had to do it again.

  450. No matter how hard

  451. they searched,

  452. no matter how perfect

  453. of a lamb they could find,

  454. there was never one

  455. that really atoned

  456. for their sin.

  457. It wasn't possible.

  458. Of course,

  459. God set this in place

  460. in order to show them something.

  461. That nothing in and of themselves

  462. was capable

  463. of forgiving their sin.

  464. They continually repeated

  465. the process year by year,

  466. which served as a reminder

  467. that their only real hope

  468. was God's mercy.

  469. And God's mercy

  470. would have to come

  471. through the fulfillment

  472. of His promise,

  473. not any work

  474. that they would do

  475. on their own.

  476. The gift of God's Son

  477. in John 3.16

  478. is the fulfillment

  479. of that promise.

  480. Because the people

  481. could not supply a lamb

  482. that was worthy

  483. to forgive their sins,

  484. God provided one

  485. for them.

  486. He sent His only Son,

  487. the only perfect sacrifice

  488. capable of paying

  489. the price for man's sin

  490. once and for all.

  491. Galatians chapter 4

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  492. tells us that

  493. when the fullness

  494. of time had come,

  495. God sent forth His Son,

  496. born of a woman,

  497. born under the law

  498. to redeem those

  499. who were under the law

  500. so that we might receive

  501. adoption as sons.

  502. If you study much

  503. about in the Gospels

  504. about John the Baptist,

  505. you'll remember

  506. in John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  507. as Jesus comes through

  508. that portion of Galilee,

  509. verse 29,

  510. it says,

  511. John saw Jesus

  512. coming toward him

  513. and what was it

  514. that John said?

  515. Behold what?

  516. The Lamb of God

  517. who takes away

  518. the sin of the world.

  519. You say,

  520. well,

  521. all that lamb talk

  522. is just coincidence.

  523. No.

  524. No.

  525. The promise

  526. of Genesis 3.15

  527. was always the plan

  528. of God to fulfill

  529. in a perfect lamb

  530. except that perfect lamb

  531. wasn't an animal,

  532. it was a person,

  533. His only Son.

  534. But even still,

  535. how could Jesus

  536. save us from our sins?

  537. His death on the cross

  538. was a substitution.

  539. He took our place.

  540. He bore the wrath of God

  541. against our sin.

  542. But His death

  543. was only sufficient

  544. because He had no sin

  545. of His own

  546. with which He had to pay.

  547. Consider that.

  548. This is why the Bible

  549. makes so clear

  550. that Jesus was not just

  551. a man from God,

  552. but Jesus is the man of God.

  553. He is God in the flesh.

  554. No other man

  555. could have possibly

  556. been sinless.

  557. Even by our very nature,

  558. when we're conceived

  559. from conception,

  560. we have this nature of sin,

  561. this depravity

  562. that is deep within us

  563. that must be redeemed.

  564. But Jesus didn't have that

  565. because Jesus wasn't born of man,

  566. He was born of God.

  567. He's the perfect Son of God

  568. without sin.

  569. Therefore,

  570. only His death

  571. was sufficient enough

  572. to atone for our sin.

  573. no other sacrifice

  574. would work.

  575. And that was the plan of God.

  576. 2 Corinthians 5.21,

  577. we quote this often.

  578. For our sake,

  579. He made Him to be sin

  580. who knew no sin

  581. so that in Him

  582. we might become

  583. the righteousness of God.

  584. In the sacrifice

  585. of the perfect Lamb,

  586. a transaction takes place,

  587. a switch.

  588. we,

  589. in our sin,

  590. deserve nothing

  591. but God's wrath.

  592. Jesus,

  593. the perfect one,

  594. takes our place,

  595. absorbs the wrath of God

  596. against our sin,

  597. takes it upon Himself

  598. in order that we,

  599. the sinful ones,

  600. may have His righteousness

  601. applied to us.

  602. Why do we celebrate Christmas?

  603. Because of that.

  604. Why do we care

  605. about the birth of Jesus?

  606. Because of His death.

  607. Why does John 3.16

  608. say that God's Son

  609. was a gift?

  610. Because how else

  611. could you describe Him?

  612. Thou who art God

  613. beyond all praising,

  614. all for love's sake

  615. became as man.

  616. Stooping so low,

  617. but sinners raising.

  618. heavenward by thine

  619. eternal plan.

  620. Thou who art God

  621. beyond all praising,

  622. all for love's sake

  623. became as man.

  624. So first we see

  625. the gift of God.

  626. Secondly,

  627. we see the call of God.

  628. The call of God.

  629. Look again at verse 16,

  630. except this time

  631. I want you to see

  632. the last phrase.

  633. Whoever believes in Him

  634. should not perish,

  635. but have eternal life.

  636. Whoever believes in Him

  637. should not perish,

  638. but have eternal life.

  639. So it's clear here.

  640. The purpose of God's gift,

  641. the Son of God,

  642. Jesus Christ,

  643. was that we might

  644. have eternal life.

  645. But the word order

  646. in this verse

  647. is important.

  648. He doesn't lead

  649. with eternal life.

  650. Because the eternal life

  651. that God offers

  652. is an alternative.

  653. It's an alternative

  654. to the spiritual death

  655. to which we are all

  656. condemned.

  657. Do you notice that?

  658. Whoever believes in Him,

  659. He doesn't just say

  660. whoever believes in Him

  661. will have eternal life.

  662. He actually says

  663. whoever believes in Him

  664. first will be rescued

  665. from eternal death,

  666. from perishing,

  667. meaning that we are all

  668. automatically by nature

  669. destined for death,

  670. eternal hell,

  671. eternal separation

  672. from God.

  673. But the gift of God

  674. was such

  675. that whoever believes

  676. in Jesus Christ

  677. will not have to perish,

  678. but will have eternal life.

  679. We're spiritually dead

  680. in our sins.

  681. Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  682. and verse 1

  683. tells us that.

  684. We desperately need

  685. divine rescue.

  686. And the birth of Jesus,

  687. this nativity story

  688. is part one

  689. of God's divine rescue mission.

  690. He gave His Son

  691. to rescue us

  692. from spiritual death

  693. and eternal hell.

  694. Look at verse 17,

  695. just after it.

  696. For God did not send

  697. His Son into the world

  698. to condemn the world,

  699. not yet at least.

  700. He will return.

  701. And when He returns,

  702. it will be to judge.

  703. So be ready for that judgment.

  704. But in this coming,

  705. that wasn't the reason.

  706. He did not send His Son

  707. to condemn the world,

  708. but that the world

  709. through Him

  710. might be saved.

  711. This is why in Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  712. we read a moment ago,

  713. the angel says to Joseph,

  714. she will bear a son.

  715. You shall call His name Jesus,

  716. which is the New Testament

  717. version of Joshua,

  718. which means God will save,

  719. for He will save His people

  720. from their sins.

  721. This brings a particular urgency

  722. to the issue of God's gift.

  723. Urgency.

  724. Urgency.

  725. Sometimes we get in our mind,

  726. if we're not super familiar

  727. with the Bible,

  728. and maybe we've only been told

  729. the good parts

  730. and the flowery parts,

  731. we get this idea in our mind

  732. that all of us are destined

  733. for eternal life,

  734. unless you're somebody like Hitler.

  735. We're all destined

  736. for eternal life,

  737. but if you follow Jesus,

  738. you'll just have a better quality

  739. of eternal life.

  740. That's not at all

  741. what the Bible teaches.

  742. That's not at all

  743. what John 3.16 teaches.

  744. No, what we're destined

  745. for is eternal hell.

  746. All of us.

  747. All of us.

  748. Unless we're rescued,

  749. none of us are destined

  750. for eternal life.

  751. So what God calls us to

  752. is faith.

  753. And He says,

  754. if you will believe in My Son,

  755. if you will believe

  756. and follow My Son,

  757. He will take your death,

  758. and you will receive His life.

  759. We come to Jesus

  760. because we'll spend eternity

  761. separated from God

  762. if we don't.

  763. And this incredible gift of God

  764. is not universally applied.

  765. Those who will not believe

  766. and follow Jesus

  767. are eternally condemned.

  768. Jesus said as much

  769. in verse 18.

  770. Look at it.

  771. Verse 18.

  772. Whoever believes in Him

  773. is not condemned,

  774. but whoever does not believe

  775. is condemned already

  776. because he has not believed

  777. in the name of the only Son of God.

  778. God's gift of eternal life

  779. through His Son

  780. can only be received

  781. by faith.

  782. Salvation is not something

  783. that you can earn

  784. by spending your money,

  785. giving away your goods,

  786. or committing yourself

  787. to morality or good works.

  788. God calls us to receive His gift

  789. only one way,

  790. by believing in His Son.

  791. And this divine rescue

  792. only comes,

  793. only comes

  794. to whosoever

  795. will follow Jesus in faith.

  796. Romans 10.

  797. If you confess with your mouth

  798. that Jesus is Lord

  799. and believe in your heart

  800. that God raised Him from the dead,

  801. you will be saved.

  802. For with the heart, Paul says,

  803. one believes and is justified,

  804. and with the mouth

  805. one confesses and is saved.

  806. For the scriptures say,

  807. everyone who believes in Him

  808. will not be put to shame.

  809. For there's no distinction

  810. between Jew and Greek.

  811. The same Lord is Lord of all,

  812. bestowing His riches

  813. on all who call on Him.

  814. For everyone who calls

  815. on the name of the Lord

  816. will be saved.

  817. Which tells us,

  818. Jesus stands ready

  819. and willing

  820. to rescue you from your sin.

  821. The question is,

  822. will you answer God's call?

  823. Because too many people

  824. are trying to circumvent

  825. the call of God.

  826. They're trying to do it

  827. their own way.

  828. Does it work?

  829. Won't work.

  830. There's an urgency to this.

  831. Believe or die.

  832. Believe or die.

  833. City of Light

  834. is a group

  835. that I like to listen to

  836. out of Australia.

  837. They just released

  838. a new song last week.

  839. Here's how the third verse goes.

  840. So I find my rest in Jesus.

  841. He who came

  842. to rescue me.

  843. Jesus saved me

  844. from the darkness.

  845. I will rise

  846. to life with Him.

  847. Have you found

  848. your rest in Jesus?

  849. Has He saved you?

  850. You personally?

  851. Has He saved you

  852. from the darkness?

  853. Do you know?

  854. When you die,

  855. will you rise

  856. to life with Him?

  857. Or will you perish?

  858. Thirdly, we see

  859. the love of God.

  860. The love of God.

  861. Now we get back

  862. to the first phrase.

  863. Verse 16.

  864. For God

  865. so loved

  866. the world.

  867. For God

  868. so loved the world.

  869. This was the motivation

  870. and the gift.

  871. And I said

  872. at the beginning

  873. that true giving

  874. is not founded

  875. on an obligation.

  876. It's founded on love.

  877. God is under

  878. no obligation to us.

  879. No one's twisting

  880. His arm

  881. to force Him

  882. to provide eternal life.

  883. the great plan

  884. of salvation

  885. is God's plan.

  886. He alone

  887. devised it.

  888. He alone

  889. executed it.

  890. He alone

  891. offers it.

  892. And the thing

  893. that motivated Him

  894. to give His Son

  895. for our sins

  896. is His divine love.

  897. And you may be

  898. saying,

  899. well, why does He love me?

  900. That's a great question.

  901. That's one I can't answer.

  902. Because He doesn't love us

  903. because we're lovable.

  904. He loves us

  905. because He loves us.

  906. Because in His very essence,

  907. what He is

  908. is love.

  909. God

  910. Now that doesn't diminish

  911. the reality

  912. of His holiness

  913. and His justice.

  914. God must judge sin.

  915. His perfect love

  916. doesn't overwhelm

  917. the other attributes

  918. that He has.

  919. He is perfectly loving

  920. and He's perfectly gracious.

  921. He's also perfectly just

  922. and He's perfectly

  923. righteous against sin.

  924. So how does this work?

  925. Remember 2 Corinthians 5.21

  926. He made Him

  927. to be sin

  928. who knew no sin

  929. so that in Him

  930. we might be made

  931. the righteousness of God.

  932. When we come to Christ,

  933. it's not that God's love

  934. turns a blind eye

  935. to what we've done.

  936. It's that no,

  937. we're recognizing

  938. that God is actually

  939. taking the sin

  940. that I have committed

  941. and He has punished

  942. His own son for it.

  943. And in return,

  944. He's taken

  945. the perfect righteousness

  946. of His only son

  947. and He's actually

  948. applied it to my life,

  949. the one who doesn't

  950. deserve it.

  951. Why?

  952. Love.

  953. Love.

  954. Love.

  955. For God

  956. so loved.

  957. Romans 5.

  958. While we were still weak,

  959. at the right time,

  960. Christ died

  961. for the ungodly.

  962. Listen,

  963. Christ died

  964. for the ungodly.

  965. Christ didn't die

  966. for the ones

  967. that are doing pretty good

  968. and trying pretty hard.

  969. He died

  970. for the ungodly.

  971. Paul goes on to say,

  972. one will scarcely die

  973. for a righteous person,

  974. though perhaps

  975. for a good person

  976. one would even

  977. dare to die.

  978. But God shows

  979. His love

  980. for us

  981. in that while

  982. we were still

  983. sinners,

  984. Christ died for us.

  985. Do you see this?

  986. Do you see this?

  987. Listen,

  988. in our sin,

  989. we don't want God.

  990. We may want

  991. the benefits of God,

  992. we don't want God.

  993. Our hearts are hard.

  994. They're depraved.

  995. Yet God,

  996. even despite the fact

  997. that we don't want Him

  998. since His own Son

  999. anyways,

1000. that while we are sinners,

  1001. Christ dies for us,

  1002. not because we're lovable

  1003. or because we're doing

  1004. a good job

1005. and He just couldn't take it,

  1006. He just wanted

  1007. to help us out

  1008. a little bit.

  1009. No,

  1010. that's not what happened.

  1011. It was out of

  1012. His divine love

  1013. that He bent down

1014. and He came to earth

1015. so that He could die

  1016. for filthy sinners

  1017. like you and me.

  1018. Why?

  1019. Because of His love.

  1020. John 3.16 plainly says

  1021. that the object

  1022. of this love

  1023. is the world.

  1024. It's the world.

  1025. Remember,

1026. this comes at the end

  1027. of a conversation

  1028. with a prominent Jew

1029. who would have only spoken

  1030. of God's love

1031. as it related to Israel.

  1032. There was no fault

  1033. in their mind

  1034. for God loving

  1035. anyone else.

  1036. But Jesus expands this.

  1037. He says,

  1038. God's love

1039. isn't just for the Jews.

  1040. God's love

  1041. is for the world.

  1042. That's what makes possible

  1043. God's call

  1044. for whosoever

1045. at the end of the verse

  1046. because His love,

1047. the object of His affection

  1048. is the whole world.

  1049. In other words,

  1050. you won't be excluded

  1051. from God's saving love

  1052. on the basis

  1053. of your nationality

  1054. or on the basis

  1055. of what you've done

  1056. up to this point

  1057. or how terrible

  1058. of a sin

  1059. you've committed.

  1060. God loves the world.

  1061. Jesus died

  1062. for the sins

  1063. of the world.

  1064. And since you're

1065. a part of the world,

  1066. that qualifies you

  1067. for His grace.

  1068. But it's only

  1069. for whosoever.

  1070. There is a limit

  1071. to that.

  1072. He doesn't just

  1073. throw it out

  1074. willy-nilly.

  1075. It's for whoever

  1076. will hear His call

  1077. and follow Him

  1078. in faith.

  1079. 1 John 4

1080. in this is the love

  1081. of God

  1082. and it was made

  1083. manifest among us

  1084. that God sent

  1085. His only Son

  1086. into the world

  1087. so that we might

  1088. live through Him.

  1089. In this is love,

  1090. not that we have

  1091. loved God,

1092. but that He loved us

  1093. and sent His Son

  1094. to be the propitiation

  1095. for our sins.

  1096. That word's important,

  1097. actually.

  1098. It means the appeasement

  1099. of God's wrath.

  1100. That when Jesus

  1101. took our place

  1102. on the cross,

  1103. it appeased

  1104. the Father's wrath

1105. for all who will believe.

  1106. Not just for everyone,

1107. for those who will believe

  1108. His own.

  1109. Jesus,

  1110. God's only Son,

  1111. in summary,

  1112. came to earth

  1113. to save sinners

  1114. from eternal death

  1115. and hell.

  1116. He who was rich

  1117. became poor.

  1118. He who is God

  1119. became a man.

  1120. And though He was

  1121. sinlessly perfect,

1122. He laid down His life

  1123. for the guilty

  1124. like you and me.

  1125. He took our place,

  1126. He bore our shame,

  1127. He paid our debt.

  1128. And then He rose

  1129. from the dead

  1130. to prove

  1131. that His sacrifice

  1132. was sufficient

1133. for all of our sins

  1134. to be forgiven.

1135. And He did all of that

  1136. according to the riches

  1137. of His everlasting love.

  1138. He willingly,

  1139. He joyfully

  1140. went through hell

1141. so that you and I

  1142. wouldn't have to.

  1143. but His gift

  1144. of eternal life

  1145. is not something

  1146. that can be earned

  1147. through what we do.

1148. It can only be received

  1149. through faith

  1150. and who He is

  1151. and what He's done.

  1152. In John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  1153. Jesus said

  1154. that when the gospel

  1155. is preached,

  1156. His sheep

  1157. would hear His voice,

  1158. He would know them,

1159. and they would follow Him.

  1160. So today,

1161. if you hear His voice,

1162. do not harden your heart.

  1163. This Christmas,

  1164. receive the gift

  1165. and follow Christ.

  1166. Thou who art love

  1167. beyond all telling,

  1168. Savior and King,
