  1. Well, as I noted last Sunday, the first half of this chapter is a summary. I don't think it's

  2. all the detail. It's a summary of a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, who was a prominent

  3. ruler and teacher among the Jews. After witnessing a few of Jesus's miracles in Jerusalem, we see that

  4. at the end of chapter two, after seeing them or witnessing them or at least hearing of them,

  5. Nicodemus arranged for this low-key, perhaps secret meeting to take place where he could learn

  6. about the source of Jesus's power. Because after all, it's not every day that someone comes to town

  7. who has the ability to heal the sick and teaches with the kind of authority with which Jesus taught,

  8. and Nicodemus, being one who was in pursuit of God in this moment, needed to have this conversation.

  9. I believe that he was searching. He's trying to figure out who exactly is Jesus, how is it that

  10. he can do these things, and why does that matter, or what implication or application does that have

  11. to me personally? I think that's why Nicodemus is coming to Jesus in these moments. And as we saw

  12. just a moment ago, as we read through it, Jesus wasted no time with Nicodemus, at least in the

  13. summary that's given to us. There's no pleasantries listed here for us. He doesn't even really address

  14. what Nicodemus says in the very beginning. Nicodemus says, we know that you must be from God, because who

  15. else could do the things that you're doing? And then immediately, what we find in the summary, at least,

  16. is Jesus cuts right to the point, and he says, unless you're born again, you can't see the kingdom of God.

  17. He doesn't even address at all Nicodemus' statement, or at least not plainly in the beginning.

  18. Nicodemus, being one of the Pharisees, as you know, did not consider himself to be a desperate sinner

  19. as other men. The Pharisees believed that God would grant eternal life on the basis of their lineage

  20. and their commitment to the law, and they were very much dedicated to those things.

  21. Nicodemus probably, as far as comparing men to men, Nicodemus probably was as good of a Jew as you

  22. could be. Probably very similar to the way Paul described himself before coming to Christ, a Jew of

  23. the Jews and an Israelite of all Israelites. Nicodemus perhaps would have certainly fit that

  24. description. Even Jesus later says, are you the teacher in Israel? He's not just any rabbi. He's well-respected.

  25. He belongs to the Sanhedrin. If anybody was going to earn eternal life, if that was possible, Nicodemus was one.

  26. It's not that they were uncommitted people. They were actually very dedicated people.

  27. Their problem was they didn't see themselves as sinners, as wicked in and of themselves.

  28. And so they believed that God would grant them eternal life on the basis of their Jewish lineage

  29. and their commitment to the law. But in the midst of that conversation, Jesus drops this bomb on Nicodemus.

  30. And he says, unless you experience a rebirth, a spiritual new birth, you will never see the kingdom of God.

  31. And he says it directly in verse 7. He repeats himself in verse 7. He says, do not marvel that I've said to you,

  32. you must be born again. And the you there in verse 7 is plural in Greek. He's not just talking about Nicodemus.

  33. He's talking about everybody. All of the Sanhedrin, all of the Pharisees, everybody must be born again

  34. in order to see the kingdom. And as we study through John chapter 3, you begin to piece it together

    John 3 chapter mention

  35. because it is a bit enigmatic, isn't it? It's a little strange to figure out what exactly was Jesus saying

  36. and what does this new birth mean and all of these kinds of things. And we begin to see in the chapter

  37. that being born again, this new birth is synonymous in John 3 with repentance of sin and faith in Christ

  38. Jesus. The repentance of sin is somewhat shadowy. We find it really in verse 5. Jesus says,

  39. truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom

  40. of God. And I don't think that when Jesus says born of water, I don't think he's talking about our

  41. natural birth. And I don't think that he's talking about baptism either. I think he's using this as an

  42. allusion to the washing away, the cleansing of sin that comes through repentance, perhaps even an

  43. allusion to what John was preaching. Nicodemus would have been familiar with that at this particular time

  44. in biblical history. He would have understood that in this cleansing away. And I think there's an

  45. allusion there to repentance. But then as we get to verses 15 and 16 and 17 and 18, we see overwhelmingly

  46. this new birth being synonymous with faith, faith specifically in Jesus Christ. But then we see

  47. that these things, repentance and faith, are actually an individual's response

  48. to the gracious work of God's spirit in their life. So then as we dig into this chapter,

  49. it's not that faith and repentance produce the new birth. They don't cause the new birth.

  50. They're actually responses to the new birth. And we see that in verse 8. Jesus gives this really

  51. helpful illustration. The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it

  52. comes from or where it goes. And then he says, so it is with every person who is born of the spirit,

  53. the spirit of God. So like the wind, you can see the effects of God's spirit at work in a person's life.

  54. Though you cannot see the spirit himself. He's like the wind. You can step outside and you can

  55. feel it on you. You can see it as it rustles the leaves that have fallen from the trees over the last

  56. several months. You can see what the wind does. You can see the effects of its work, though you cannot

  57. see it, though you cannot understand its movements fully. You don't know where it's coming from and where

  58. it's going. And Jesus says, that's how my spirit is at work in our lives. You can't really fully

  59. understand its movements. You don't know where it's coming from and where it's going. You can't

  60. see the spirit itself. But what you see is the effects of the spirit's work in a person's life

  61. when he comes in and he produces this regenerative work, this new birth, and a person is born again.

  62. And what immediately is seen as the result of that is repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ.

  63. That's the lesson that Jesus is teaching Nicodemus. That salvation is not something you do.

  64. Salvation is something God does in us. It's his grace. And this is really where Nicodemus had

  65. a struggle. Look at verse 9. Nicodemus said to him, how can these things be?

  66. How, Jesus, is that possible?

  67. Now, Nicodemus was a smart man. He doesn't get where he is politically and religiously and all of

  68. those things. He's the teacher of Israel, Jesus says. He doesn't get there without

  69. being very intelligent. I don't think that he's misunderstanding Jesus's analogy about being

  70. born again. In fact, I even think when Nicodemus responds to Jesus and says, can a man enter into,

  71. can an old man enter into his mother's womb again? I think he's just responding to Jesus in the same

  72. words that Jesus is using. I think he's using his words to match Jesus's analogy. And he's essentially

  73. saying what you're saying isn't possible. Like, it can't just be that. That can't be all there is

  74. to this eternal life and kingdom of God. And I think that his response here in verse 9 actually

  75. indicates that he does indeed understand the lesson, but he was unwilling to accept it,

  76. at least at this moment. And he says, not explain that to me further. He says, I don't think that's

  77. possible. I don't think you're right about that. How can that be? So believing that his obedience to

  78. the law would gain him eternal life, Nicodemus couldn't see how it was possible for salvation

  79. to be entirely by God's grace apart from his own human effort. I think that's what's at play here

  80. in this passage. And then in verses 10 through 12, Jesus rebukes the hardness of Nicodemus's heart.

  81. We'll look at that a little more in a moment. But then he goes on to wonderfully explain

  82. how salvation by grace through faith is possible. And that's what verses 9 through 21 are.

  83. Jesus gives this lesson to Nicodemus about being born again. Nicodemus says, how's that even possible?

  84. And Jesus says, let me tell you how it's possible. And that's what unfolds. And here's the summary of it.

  85. The answer to Nicodemus's question, how is this possible? How can these things be?

  86. Is found only in the person and work of Jesus. It's only found in Jesus. He can't understand it apart from him.

  87. And Jesus essentially is standing before him saying, Nicodemus, I came, I am here so that this can be possible.

  88. Just look to me, listen to me. And then he begins to explain it. And so what I want to do is I want

  89. to take the same basic structure that we used last week in verse 16. And I want to explore

  90. a little bit more in this broader perspective of how Jesus answered Nicodemus. And I'm going to try

  91. to tie that back into Christmas and the Christmas story once again as well. Okay, so we're going to

  92. look a little further at the identity of Jesus as the gift of God. We are going to see an illustration

  93. that Jesus gives about the call of God to faith. And then we'll, we'll finish it with asking the

  94. question of God's love. If his love is so great, why do so many people reject it? Because we find that

  95. answer in this passage as well. Okay. So, so let's look through it just quickly together. The first thing

  96. is identifying the gift of God, identifying the gift of God. And we're going to find this in verse 13

  97. in just, just a moment. So last week, looking at verse 16, we found that the greatest gift ever given

  98. was a person, God's only begotten son, John writes. And in fact, the gift of Jesus we discovered is

  99. actually the theme of the entire Bible. So after sin brings in suffering and death, God promises that he

  100. will send a deliverer to rescue his people. And then we find that the old Testament is full of all of

  101. these pictures, like the sacrificial system of reminding of God's promise that he will send a

  102. perfect lamb that will atone for the sins of man. And then when we get into the new Testament, we learn

  103. that this deliverer who is the gift of John 3 16 is none other than Jesus of Nazareth. So let's look at

  104. verse 13 now. And I want to see in this text, how Jesus is actually making that claim that he is that

  105. gift. Okay. Verse 13, Jesus says this weird thing. No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended

  106. from heaven. And then he adds in the title, the son of man. So no one has ascended into heaven except he

  107. who descended from heaven. So Jesus had simplified this gospel mission for Nicodemus by explaining it

  108. in the earthly terms of the new birth. But Nicodemus didn't want to accept what Jesus was saying. So in

  109. verses 10 to 12, Jesus mildly rebukes him. Look, look with me at verse 10. Jesus answered, are you the

  110. teacher of Israel? And yet you do not understand these things? You don't see how this can be?

  111. Nicodemus verse 11. Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and bear witness to what

  112. we've seen, but you do not receive our testimony. Well, who's the we there? I don't think that he's

  113. referring to his disciples yet. We don't really know much about them at this point in John's gospel,

  114. at least. I think Jesus is referring perhaps to the Old Testament prophets, the ones that Nicodemus

  115. was very familiar with, the ones that Nicodemus would have known, all of these prophecies as he

  116. would have studied them himself. But all of those prophecies, Nicodemus had not interpreted right.

  117. And Jesus is saying, we speak of the things that we know. We speak of the things that we've seen and

  118. that God has made us aware of. And yet you do not, you do not accept those things in verse 12.

  119. He says, if I've told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you of

  120. heavenly things? So Nicodemus wouldn't accept the most fundamental truths explained in the simplest of

  121. terms. He would never come to grips with the deeper heavenly realities for which he was seeking.

  122. And Jesus's point in verse 13 was that a man's understanding is only as good as his source of

  123. information. A man's understanding is only as good as his source of information. Nicodemus was trying to

  124. find all these answers, but he was trying to find them in all the wrong places. And Jesus says,

  125. Nicodemus, no man has ascended into heaven so as to learn all of these things and bring them back

  126. to communicate to you. But Jesus stood before Nicodemus as the one from heaven who knew these

  127. realities, who knew all of these things, had the full knowledge of salvation and had the authority

  128. to share it. And Nicodemus is saying, just listen to me, listen to me. None of these men know. I know.

  129. I know. And there's three things about Jesus's identity. I think that's revealed in this one

  130. verse. And the first one we see is son of God, son of God. The clear implication of Jesus's statement

  131. is that he is the one who came from heaven. He's not talking in an abstraction here. He's not talking

  132. about some person that is out there that you might be able to gain this knowledge from. He's saying

  133. clearly to Nicodemus, no, I have come from heaven. I have come. But Jesus wasn't just any being from

  134. heaven. In verse 16, as we studied last week, he referred to himself as God's only son. He wasn't

  135. an angel that was delivering a message as others had done in the scriptures. Jesus was claiming to be

  136. God, claiming to be one with the father. Last week, we looked at this from Philippians 2.

  137. I want you to actually look at this again, except from Matthew chapter one. In fact,

  138. turn with me there. It's just a few pages over from where you are. In Matthew chapter one,

  139. and I want you to see in the Christmas narrative, the reality of Jesus as the son of God, the son of

  140. God. Matthew chapter one, let's start reading at verse 12 and just be patient with me for a second.

  141. There's a reason why I want to read all of these names. Okay. Verse 12.

  142. After the deportation to Babylon, Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel.

  143. Shealtiel, the father of Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel, the father of Abiad. Abiad, the father of Eliakim.

  144. And Eliakim, the father of Azor. Azor, the father of Zadok. Zadok, the father of Achim. Achim, the father of Eliad.

  145. And Eliad, the father of Eleazar. And Eleazar, the father of Mathen. And Mathen, the father of Jacob.

  146. And this is the one I want you to see. And Jacob, the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called the Christ.

  147. Now, do you notice the difference between the way that Matthew describes the direct lineage of Jesus versus everybody else in this paragraph?

  148. Really, everybody else in the chapter. Over and over, Matthew says, this man begat this man.

  149. And this man begat this man. And so on and so forth. Until he gets all the way down to Joseph.

  150. And he says, Jacob begat Joseph, who did not begat Jesus, Matthew says.

  151. Joseph was just the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born.

  152. Do you see what Matthew is doing? He's going out of his way here to emphasize the fact that Jesus is not the son of Joseph.

  153. And then he goes on. We see it again in verse 18. Skip down to that now.

  154. Now, the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  155. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, it's an important emphasis,

  156. she was found to be with child from the Holy Ghost.

  157. And her husband, Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

  158. But as he considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,

  159. Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

  160. She will bear a son. You shall call his name Jesus.

  161. He will save his people from their sins.

  162. And all of this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet.

  163. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son.

  164. And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means God is with us.

  165. And when Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.

  166. He took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son and he called his name Jesus.

  167. Now, I want you to see all of this here.

  168. Six different times, beginning of verse 16, in the lineage verse, and then when we get to verse 18 through 25.

  169. Six different times, Matthew emphasizes the fact that Jesus was not the son of Joseph,

  170. and that Mary was a virgin when he was born.

  171. He's the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

  172. Before they came together, verse 18.

  173. With child from the Holy Ghost, verse 18.

  174. That which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit, verse 20.

  175. Verse 23, behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son.

  176. And then you could add in an extra one.

  177. They call his name Emmanuel, which is God is with us.

  178. Verse 25, knew her not until she had given birth to a son.

  179. That is an intimacy, sexually speaking.

  180. Matthew goes out of his way in this birth narrative to say,

  181. Jesus is from God.

  182. Jesus is the son of God.

  183. He wasn't a regular man who was endowed with divine qualities.

  184. It wasn't that Jesus was born like everyone else is born,

  185. and then all of a sudden God said, okay, I'm going to make this man my divine figure.

  186. That's not how this happened.

  187. Jesus has always been.

  188. And the testimony of the scripture is that the Messiah that would come

  189. would not just be ordinary like us, even though he is an ordinary man,

  190. but that he is God in the flesh.

  191. Jesus' explicit claim in the scriptures is that he himself is God.

  192. He's one with the Father, a part of the Trinity.

  193. But then if Jesus had been born of Joseph, and this is so important,

  194. if he had been born of Joseph, he couldn't be our Savior.

  195. Because if he was born of Joseph, that means Jesus was in Adam.

  196. And every person that's in Adam has a nature of sin and rebellion that must be redeemed.

  197. And the Bible is abundantly clear that Jesus was not in Adam.

  198. He had no sin.

  199. He's the son of God.

  200. And we have the hint of that in verse 13 in John chapter 3 when he looks at Nicodemus and he says,

    John 3 chapter mention

  201. listen, no one has ascended into heaven to gain this knowledge except he who has come from heaven.

  202. And Nicodemus, that's me.

  203. That's me.

  204. I'm the son of God.

  205. But it's not just son of God.

  206. We see another identifying marker in verse 13.

  207. We see son of man.

  208. Of course, we've talked about this a lot in Mark's gospel,

  209. so I'm not going to spend a lot of time here.

  210. But we know this was Jesus' favorite designation for himself.

  211. In the four gospels, he uses it 81 times at least for himself.

  212. Son of man, it's important.

  213. And we think this is Jesus connecting himself to the Daniel 7 figure,

  214. the Messiah who would rule over all things that God Almighty would give over to him.

  215. Not only did Jesus plainly tell Nicodemus that he was the son of God from heaven,

  216. but he plainly tells him, I am the Messiah, Nicodemus.

  217. I'm the one, the one you've been hoping for, that you've been looking for.

  218. That's me.

  219. It's a bold claim.

  220. It's a bold claim that he's made.

  221. But he's not just the son of God.

  222. He's not just the son of man.

  223. In verse 13, he's the source of truth.

  224. He's the source of truth.

  225. His whole purpose in revealing his identity to Nicodemus

  226. was so that Nicodemus would trust his word.

  227. Because Jesus is the son of God,

  228. and because he is the son of man,

  229. he is the ultimate and final source of truth.

  230. And his point was not only that his word can be believed,

  231. but that it must be believed.

  232. And so he tells Nicodemus,

  233. no man can give you this

  234. except the one who has come from heaven,

  235. the son of God and the son of man,

  236. the source of all truth.

  237. If you really want to know about eternal life, Nicodemus,

  238. look at me.

  239. Listen to me.

  240. I have that knowledge,

  241. and I want to share it with you

  242. if you will just listen

  243. and if you will open your heart.

  244. And of course, Hebrews tells us this.

  245. Long ago at many times and in many ways,

  246. God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,

  247. but in these last days,

  248. he has spoken to us by his son,

  249. whom he appointed the heir of all things,

  250. through whom also he created the world.

  251. And of course, we know Jesus' own claim.

  252. In John 14, Jesus said,

  253. I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  254. No man comes to the Father except through me.

  255. I'm the way, the truth.

  256. If you want truth, you have to look at Jesus.

  257. There's no other way to know it.

  258. And I just want to remind you,

  259. and I know it's a few of us,

  260. and I know all of your testimonies,

  261. and I know you love the Lord,

  262. and I hope I'm not boring you.

  263. Maybe I'm arming you with something you can take

  264. to the family dinners this week

  265. if you have some more of those to go to.

  266. It's not possible to be indifferent to Jesus.

  267. It's not possible.

  268. He can't have been merely a good teacher

  269. or a prophet or a moral example.

  270. If he was only a teacher,

  271. then what he taught was lies.

  272. And if he was only a prophet,

  273. then you must insist that he was a false prophet.

  274. And if you think of him only as a moral example

  275. for us to follow,

  276. then your idea of morality is hugely perverted.

  277. He's either God or he isn't.

  278. He's either the Savior or he isn't.

  279. He's either the truth or he isn't.

  280. And when it comes to our response to him,

  281. we either believe and follow him wholly

  282. or we deny and reject him completely.

  283. And there's too many people that we know

  284. in the context in which we live

  285. in a Christianity-saturated culture like ours.

  286. There are too many people

  287. that are indifferent to Jesus.

  288. They're trying to be indifferent to him.

  289. And you can't be.

  290. You can't be.

  291. You either follow him wholly

  292. or you deny him completely.

  293. There's no middle ground there.

  294. And I think John 3

  295. is just another example of that.

  296. So we see identifying the gift of God.

  297. Secondly, let's look at illustrating the call of God.

  298. Illustrating the call of God.

  299. So in verse 16,

  300. the call of God was that

  301. sinners are to believe in Jesus Christ

  302. for eternal life.

  303. And there's urgency to that call in verse 16.

  304. Because as we continue to follow through,

  305. it says,

  306. whoever does not believe is condemned already.

  307. We stand condemned.

  308. So there's urgency to this call.

  309. This salvation is made available.

  310. Jesus is on this rescue mission.

  311. And we learned last week

  312. that every person is dead

  313. in their trespasses and sin.

  314. We desperately need rescue.

  315. And Jesus is the promised Savior

  316. sent to save us.

  317. But his gift must be received by faith.

  318. But then Jesus illustrates this call

  319. so helpfully in verses 14 and 15.

  320. And this is what we cut out last week

  321. that we want to spend our time on today.

  322. Verse 14,

  323. as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

  324. so must the Son of Man be lifted up

  325. that whoever believes in him

  326. may have eternal life.

  327. Remember,

  328. these verses are Jesus' response

  329. to Nicodemus' question in verse 9.

  330. How are these things possible?

  331. And Jesus begins by essentially saying,

  332. one must believe in who I am.

  333. The Son of God,

  334. Son of Man,

  335. source of truth.

  336. You have to believe in who I am.

  337. And then he follows that up with,

  338. and you need to understand and believe

  339. what I've come to do.

  340. Except he uses this illustration.

  341. It comes from Numbers 21.

  342. In fact,

  343. why don't you turn there with me

  344. in the Old Testament.

  345. Numbers chapter 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  346. Perhaps you remember the story

  347. maybe from Sunday school,

  348. growing up,

  349. or just from your own reading.

  350. Numbers chapter 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  351. And look with me at verse 4.

  352. Of course,

  353. this is just another example

  354. of the many times

  355. that the nation of Israel

  356. had complained and whined

  357. and turned in rebellion

  358. from the Lord.

  359. And we find this story in verse 4.

  360. Numbers 21, verse 4.

    Numbers 21:4

  361. From Mount Hor,

  362. they set out by the way

  363. to the Red Sea

  364. to go around the land of Edom.

  365. And the people

  366. became impatient

  367. on the way.

  368. And the people spoke against God

  369. and against Moses.

  370. Why have you brought us up

  371. out of Egypt

  372. to die in the wilderness?

  373. For there is no food

  374. and no water,

  375. and we loathe

  376. this worthless food.

  377. The worthless food,

  378. I'm assuming here,

  379. is a reference

  380. to the manna

  381. that God had sent.

  382. The heavenly food

  383. that was at one time

  384. to the Israelites

  385. so wonderful,

  386. and now they think

  387. it's wonderfully terrible,

  388. and they don't want it anymore,

  389. and they're complaining.

  390. It reminds me that,

  391. you know,

  392. all the kids sang

  393. that song last week,

  394. Sing We the Song of Emmanuel,

  395. and it's got that phrase in it,

  396. lift your voices

  397. and now proclaim.

  398. And Andy and Amy

  399. told me last week

  400. that when he gets confused,

  401. what she sings there,

  402. every time she sings that song

  403. is lift your voices

  404. and now complain.

  405. And that's really

  406. what it was like

  407. for the Israelites.

  408. Every time they lifted

  409. their voices

  410. underneath Moses' leadership,

  411. it was to complain

  412. about something.

  413. And here they're complaining

  414. again about the provision

  415. of God.

  416. They would rather

  417. go back to Egypt

  418. than follow God

  419. in the wilderness.

  420. Verse 6,

  421. Then the Lord sent

  422. fiery serpents

  423. among the people,

  424. and they bit the people

  425. so that many people

  426. of Israel died.

  427. And the people came

  428. to Moses and said,

  429. We have sinned.

  430. We've spoken against

  431. the Lord and against you.

  432. Pray to the Lord

  433. that he may take away

  434. the serpents from us.

  435. So Moses prayed

  436. for the people.

  437. And the Lord said to Moses,

  438. Make a fiery serpent

  439. and set it on a pole,

  440. and everyone who is bitten,

  441. when he sees it,

  442. shall live.

  443. So Moses made a bronze serpent,

  444. set it on a pole,

  445. and if a serpent bit anyone,

  446. he would look at the bronze serpent

  447. and live.

  448. Do you remember this story?

  449. The story is symbolic

  450. of man's rebellion

  451. against God.

  452. Just as Israel spoke

  453. against God

  454. in this passage,

  455. so have each of us

  456. turned against him

  457. in our sin and pride.

  458. But sin always

  459. carries unavoidable consequences

  460. because God in his justice

  461. must judge it.

  462. He must judge sin.

  463. And with the nation of Israel,

  464. he sent these fiery serpents

  465. really to devour them.

  466. Many scholars believe

  467. they're called fiery serpents

  468. because perhaps their venom

  469. produced a fever,

  470. a burning fever

  471. that ultimately led to death.

  472. death.

  473. And these serpents

  474. are emblems

  475. of death

  476. and sin.

  477. Whoever was bitten

  478. by one

  479. was without

  480. any hope at all.

  481. There's nothing

  482. they could do

  483. to escape

  484. the grim reality

  485. of death

  486. once one of these snakes

  487. had gotten a hold of them.

  488. But though the people

  489. faced the divine wrath

  490. of God,

  491. he provided a way

  492. of escape.

  493. He provided a way

  494. for them to be healed.

  495. And he tells Moses,

  496. make a snake,

  497. put it on a pole,

  498. and set it in the middle

  499. of the camp.

  500. And anyone who's bitten,

  501. if they will just look

  502. at what I have provided,

  503. if they will just cast themselves

  504. on my provision,

  505. they will be fully healed.

  506. But it took the gaze

  507. of faith

  508. for each of those people.

  509. Jesus left no doubt

  510. in John 3

  511. what the application

  512. of this event is.

  513. It was a type

  514. of what he had come

  515. to do for us.

  516. And the details

  517. are remarkably precise.

  518. Just as the bronze serpent

  519. was suspended

  520. between heaven and earth,

  521. so would Jesus

  522. eventually,

  523. when he made it

  524. to Jerusalem

  525. for his crucifixion,

  526. be suspended

  527. on a pole,

  528. on a cross

  529. between heaven and earth.

  530. Even the fact

  531. that Moses

  532. made this

  533. out of bronze

  534. is significant

  535. instead of using

  536. an actual snake.

  537. It's significant

  538. because Jesus

  539. wasn't a real sinner

  540. that was put

  541. on a cross,

  542. but he was made

  543. to be sin for us.

  544. And as he is

  545. hanging on the cross,

  546. he bears our sin.

  547. He bears our wrath.

  548. And we can't miss

  549. the role of faith

  550. in the healing.

  551. The bitten people

  552. were as good as dead

  553. unless they looked

  554. to God's grace

  555. in this,

  556. his provision.

  557. There was no other way

  558. for them to receive healing.

  559. They had to look

  560. at God's provision

  561. for life.

  562. But to look

  563. to God's provision

  564. meant they had

  565. to abandon

  566. all their other hopes

  567. of remedies.

  568. Perhaps they had

  569. gathered whatever

  570. hope they could

  571. and medicinal things

  572. or whatever process

  573. they could go through

  574. to get rid of this fever,

  575. but none of those things

  576. were going to work.

  577. The only way

  578. they were going

  579. to get healing

  580. was to look

  581. at what God

  582. had provided

  583. in the serpent

  584. that was hanging

  585. on the pole.

  586. But in order

  587. to do that,

  588. they had to abandon

  589. all their other hopes.

  590. And is that not exactly

  591. what salvation

  592. is for us?

  593. There's no other way

  594. by which we can be saved

  595. than through faith

  596. in God's gracious provision.

  597. And to receive

  598. eternal life,

  599. you need only

  600. look to Jesus.

  601. But to look

  602. to Jesus

  603. means that we must

  604. abandon

  605. all other

  606. potential remedies.

  607. Because none

  608. of the other ones work.

  609. We come to him

  610. and him alone.

  611. And we gaze

  612. at the gracious

  613. provision of our God,

  614. our Savior,

  615. hanging,

  616. bearing our sins

  617. on the cross.

  618. And Kent Hughes

  619. is so encouraging here.

  620. He says,

  621. no matter how horribly

  622. they were bitten,

  623. no matter how many times

  624. they had been bitten,

  625. or how sick they were,

  626. the opportunity

  627. for salvation

  628. was there.

  629. Even the most degraded

  630. and miserable sinner

  631. who looks to Christ

  632. will be saved.

  633. And that's why

  634. our Lord used

  635. this wonderful

  636. illustration.

  637. So we've seen

  638. the gift of God,

  639. that's Christ.

  640. We see the call

  641. of God,

  642. look to Christ

  643. in faith,

  644. Jesus illustrates

  645. that for us.

  646. And remember,

  647. he's answering

  648. Nicodemus' question.

  649. Finally,

  650. we see ignoring

  651. the love of God.

  652. Ignoring the love

  653. of God.

  654. So as we emphasized

  655. last week,

  656. it wasn't a sense

  657. of obligation

  658. that motivated God

  659. to give his son

  660. for our sins,

  661. but he gave his son

  662. according to the riches

  663. of his everlasting love.

  664. God loves the world.

  665. Jesus died

  666. for the sins

  667. of the world.

  668. And all who come

  669. to Christ in faith

  670. will receive

  671. this precious gift

  672. of eternal life.

  673. God loves the love.

  674. But that begs

  675. the question,

  676. if that's true,

  677. why then

  678. do so many people

  679. reject it?

  680. Why do so many people

  681. deny

  682. this incredible love?

  683. And the answer

  684. is in verse 19.

  685. this is the judgment.

  686. The light

  687. has come

  688. into the world

  689. and people

  690. love the darkness

  691. rather than

  692. the light

  693. because their

  694. works

  695. were evil.

  696. For everyone

  697. who does

  698. wicked things

  699. hates the light

  700. and does not

  701. come to the light

  702. lest his works

  703. should be exposed.

  704. Why do people

  705. deny the love

  706. of God?

  707. Because they

  708. love their sin

  709. more.

  710. Because they

  711. love the darkness.

  712. Notice the

  713. contrast between

  714. loves.

  715. Verse 16

  716. has the love

  717. of God.

  718. He loves

  719. the world

  720. so much.

  721. This world

  722. that he has

  723. created

  724. that he gives

  725. his only son

  726. in order

  727. that we might

  728. have eternal life.

  729. But on the

  730. other hand

  731. the object

  732. of our love

  733. is the very

  734. sin that

  735. makes our

  736. salvation

  737. necessary.

  738. In our

  739. hearts

  740. we want

  741. our sin

  742. more than

  743. we want

  744. life.

  745. Which is

  746. exactly why

  747. a new

  748. birth

  749. is necessary.

  750. John

  751. often refers

  752. to Jesus

  753. as the light

  754. in his

  755. gospel.

  756. In this

  757. context

  758. Jesus

  759. is the

  760. light

  761. that

  762. exposes

  763. how

  764. sinful

  765. we

  766. truly

  767. are.

  768. And we

  769. don't like

  770. that.

  771. When we

  772. come to

  773. Christ

  774. we cannot

  775. come without

  776. acknowledging

  777. our

  778. wretchedness

  779. our

  780. inability

  781. to do

  782. this on

  783. our own.

  784. And instead

  785. of coming

  786. to him

  787. to be

  788. exposed

  789. we'd

  790. prefer to

  791. remain in

  792. the darkness.

  793. we see

  794. this all

  795. around

  796. us.

  797. We sing

  798. about

  799. this.

  800. At

  801. Christmas

  802. hark the

  803. herald angels

  804. sing.

  805. Hail the

  806. heaven born

  807. prince of

  808. peace.

  809. Hail the

  810. son of

  811. righteousness

  812. light and

  813. life to

  814. all he

  815. brings.

  816. Mild he

  817. lays his

  818. glory by.

  819. Born that

  820. man no

  821. more may

  822. die.

  823. Born to

  824. raise the

  825. sons of

  826. earth.

  827. Born to

  828. give them

  829. second

  830. birth.

  831. It's

  832. this

  833. wretchedness

  834. and love

  835. of the

  836. darkness

  837. that has

  838. so

  839. infiltrated

  840. our

  841. hearts

  842. that we

  843. would never

  844. cry out

  845. to God

  846. on our

  847. own.

  848. That's

  849. why

  850. Jesus

  851. tells

  852. Nicodemus

  853. you need

  854. the wind

  855. to blow.

  856. You need

  857. a new

  858. birth.

  859. You need

  860. the grace

  861. of God

  862. to change

  863. your heart.

  864. We see

  865. this in the

  866. Christmas story

  867. evidently

  868. in the

  869. person of

  870. King

  871. Herod

  872. right.

  873. He knows

  874. based on

  875. the testimony

  876. of the

  877. Magi

  878. and on

  879. the testimony

  880. of the

  881. chief

  882. priest

  883. and the

  884. scribes

  885. that revealed

  886. to him

  887. the prophecies

  888. of the

  889. Old Testament

  890. that if

  891. this really

  892. was the

  893. King of

  894. the Jews

  895. this is

  896. the one

  897. this is

  898. the Messiah

  899. he's the

  900. one yet

  901. what did

  902. Herod do

  903. with that

  904. information

  905. he sought

  906. to kill

  907. him

  908. he sought

  909. to kill

  910. him

  911. why

  912. because he

  913. loved the

  914. darkness

  915. more than

  916. the light

  917. and we

  918. see this

  919. in people

  920. around us

  921. a couple

  922. of nights

  923. ago

  924. a Christmas

  925. Eve night

  926. we were

  927. at my

  928. parents

  929. house

  930. and

  931. somebody

  932. had turned

  933. on a

  934. new show

  935. that has

  936. Will Smith

  937. going around

  938. the world

  939. and looking

  940. at all these

  941. natural things

  942. like volcanoes

  943. and stuff

  944. like that

  945. and of course

  946. that

  947. I don't know

  948. if you do

  949. this but

  950. anytime

  951. somebody

  952. pops up

  953. on TV

  954. that's

  955. famous

  956. we usually

  957. try to

  958. figure out

  959. what do

  960. they really

  961. believe

  962. you know

  963. and somebody

  964. says

  965. I wonder

  966. if he's

  967. a Christian

  968. and so

  969. my brother

  970. in law

  971. RJ

  972. started

  973. looking online

  974. to see if he

  975. could find

  976. what kind

  977. of information

  978. about Will

  979. Smith

  980. and what

  981. Will

  982. Smith

  983. believes

  984. and apparently

  985. based on what

  986. he had found

  987. he grew up

  988. as a Christian

  989. and even

  990. in a Baptist

  991. church

  992. of sorts

  993. and

  994. but as he

  995. got older

  996. he decided

  997. that he

  998. believes

  999. that there's

  1000. a God

  1001. but that

  1002. he hates

  1003. organized

  1004. religion

  1005. which is

  1006. really just

  1007. another way

  1008. of saying

  1009. I don't

  1010. want anyone

  1011. to tell me

  1012. what to do

  1013. I want

  1014. to do it

  1015. myself

  1016. and make

  1017. up my own

  1018. mind about

  1019. how I'm

  1020. going to

  1021. live my

  1022. life

  1023. and he

  1024. said

  1025. what I

  1026. want to

  1027. do

  1028. is I

  1029. want to

  1030. find all

  1031. of these

  1032. religions

  1033. and I

  1034. want to

  1035. find the

  1036. things that

  1037. I like

  1038. the most

  1039. about these

  1040. different

  1041. religions

  1042. and I

  1043. want to

  1044. bring them

  1045. together

  1046. and that's

  1047. really what

  1048. my faith

  1049. is

  1050. so God

  1051. is there

  1052. God

  1053. is there

  1054. I don't

  1055. want to

  1056. deny

  1057. that

  1058. but I'm

  1059. going to

  1060. get the

  1061. best things

  1062. out of all

  1063. of these

  1064. other things

  1065. that's just

  1066. another way

  1067. of saying

  1068. I don't

  1069. really know

  1070. if God

  1071. is there

  1072. but if he

  1073. is and if

  1074. he's good

  1075. I'm sure

  1076. that he

  1077. will reward

  1078. nice people

  1079. who really

  1080. do their

  1081. best and

  1082. try their

  1083. hardest

  1084. but it's

  1085. not really

  1086. about

  1087. subscribing

  1088. to a

  1089. person

  1090. or a

  1091. thing

  1092. so I'm

  1093. just

  1094. going to

  1095. grab

  1096. all of

  1097. these

  1098. little

  1099. things

  1100. what is

  1101. that all

  1102. about

  1103. that's

  1104. about

  1105. loving

  1106. the

  1107. darkness

  1108. in

  1109. Jesus

  1110. has come

  1111. the light

  1112. but men

  1113. love the

  1114. darkness

  1115. rather than

  1116. the light

  1117. because their

  1118. hearts are

  1119. evil

  1120. because in

  1121. them there

  1122. is depravity

  1123. and sinfulness

  1124. and a nature

  1125. that must be

  1126. redeemed

  1127. and they

  1128. grasp at

  1129. everything

  1130. possible

  1131. except for

  1132. the one

  1133. thing

  1134. that can

  1135. actually

  1136. help them

  1137. they refuse

  1138. the provision

  1139. that God

  1140. has given

  1141. in order

  1142. to pursue

  1143. their own

  1144. things

  1145. and God

  1146. says listen

  1147. Jesus

  1148. says listen

  1149. you've got

  1150. to be born

  1151. again

  1152. and look

  1153. verse 21

  1154. we'll finish

  1155. with this

  1156. but whoever

  1157. does what

  1158. is true

  1159. comes to

  1160. the light

  1161. so that it

  1162. may be

  1163. clearly seen

  1164. that his

  1165. works

  1166. have been

  1167. carried out

  1168. in God

  1169. so lest we

  1170. arrogantly

  1171. think too much

  1172. of ourselves

  1173. as if

  1174. we did what

  1175. was necessary

  1176. and the others

  1177. didn't

  1178. we were

  1179. smarter than

  1180. them

  1181. or we were

  1182. more capable

  1183. than them

  1184. we're reminded

  1185. here in

  1186. verse 21

  1187. that coming

  1188. to the

  1189. light

  1190. actually

  1191. reveals

  1192. God's

  1193. work in

  1194. us

  1195. the wind

  1196. has blown

  1197. and its

  1198. effects are

  1199. visible in

  1200. us

  1201. and this

  1202. is a result

  1203. of God's

  1204. grace

  1205. isn't it

  1206. isn't that

  1207. why we

  1208. worship him

  1209. and we

  1210. thank him

  1211. because of

  1212. his grace

  1213. so maybe

  1214. this week

  1215. if you

  1216. gather with

  1217. family once

  1218. again

  1219. perhaps for

  1220. extended

  1221. Christmas

  1222. gatherings

  1223. or maybe

  1224. maybe for

  1225. your New

  1226. Year's

  1227. gathering

  1228. if you do

  1229. something

  1230. like that

  1231. maybe

  1232. maybe a

  1233. good question

  1234. to ask

  1235. is in

  1236. is the

  1237. wind blowing

  1238. in your

  1239. life today

  1240. do you

  1241. hear his

  1242. voice

  1243. is he

  1244. calling

  1245. believe

  1246. him

  1247. follow

  1248. him
