  1. We're going to seek to understand how we can move from being near the kingdom to actually being in the kingdom.

  2. We're going to talk about all those things.

  3. But we'll waste our time if we view this text as mostly a distant event that has no real bearing on our lives today.

  4. And it will do us no good to treat this passage as just another intellectual exercise.

  5. Because the truth is that you too might be near the kingdom without actually being in it.

  6. And my prayer is that by the end of this study together, you'll either be encouraged by the grace of Jesus that you have already received,

  7. or else you will be prepared to receive him by faith just now.

  8. And so I'm going to lay all my cards out for you right there from the beginning.

  9. If you're here today and you're somewhat of a skeptic, not necessarily against Jesus,

  10. just not really sure exactly what to do with him,

  11. my goal is to persuade you today to follow Christ.

  12. And I hope that you will do that today.

  13. First thing I want you to see is the scribe's inquiry.

  14. The scribe's inquiry in verse 28 or the scribe's question.

  15. Look with me at verse 28.

  16. One of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another and seeing that he answered them well,

  17. asked him,

  18. which commandment is the most important of all?

  19. Now this interaction between Jesus and the scribe comes at the end,

  20. as you well know, of a series of confrontations

  21. through which the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem

  22. were attempting to destroy the Lord and his influence.

  23. The Pharisees,

  24. the Herodians,

  25. the Sadducees had all taken their turns to trap Jesus,

  26. but each of them have,

  27. in Mark's gospel,

  28. failed to do so.

  29. And what turns out to be their final attempt

  30. at getting to Jesus,

  31. the ruling body of the Jews,

  32. we know them as the Sanhedrin,

  33. sent this scribe to Jesus.

  34. Matthew 22 tells us that he was a Pharisee

  35. and that they sent him to trap Jesus

  36. in some kind of issue relating to the law.

  37. Well,

  38. scribes were lawyers,

  39. so it's not very surprising

  40. that that would be the thing that they sent him to Jesus to discuss.

  41. However,

  42. what's interesting about this particular interaction

  43. is that as the man got close enough

  44. to hear the way that Jesus was responding

  45. to these other groups that were challenging him,

  46. he discovered very quickly

  47. that he actually appreciated,

  48. even agreed with the Lord.

  49. And that surely must have come as such a surprise to him.

  50. He has been sent by his buddies to go and trap the Lord,

  51. but as he gets close enough to actually hear

  52. the things that he was saying

  53. and the way that he was saying them,

  54. he actually found himself inwardly applauding Jesus,

  55. not actually wanting to destroy him.

  56. So though he belonged to a group

  57. that outright rejected Jesus,

  58. he seems to be somewhat personally conflicted about him.

  59. And I think this man is similar to the people

  60. that we often refer to as searching.

  61. Maybe you've used that term before

  62. and referring to people who aren't yet Christians,

  63. but aren't necessarily closed off to it,

  64. at least in their minds.

  65. They don't yet believe and follow Jesus,

  66. but they aren't exactly sure what to do with him either.

  67. Do you find that to be a fair description

  68. of where you are in relation to Christ?

  69. You wouldn't say that you're against Christ.

  70. You think it's pretty amazing,

  71. the things that he did,

  72. and especially the example that he laid forth.

  73. And you're not prepared at least to outright deny

  74. who he is and what he might can do,

  75. but you're just not really sure

  76. exactly what you're supposed to do with him either.

  77. How you're supposed to take him.

  78. And I want to tell you, if that's you today,

  79. you're close.

  80. You're close.

  81. You're close.

  82. You're not in, though.

  83. Salvation doesn't come to those

  84. who are friendly toward Jesus,

  85. but those who wholeheartedly follow him.

  86. There's a difference.

  87. It's no real surprise that a scribe would ask Jesus

  88. a question concerning the law, really.

  89. Pharisees in particular remained in constant debate

  90. over the various nuances of God's law,

  91. but then also this enormous list of regulations

  92. and traditions that they had added to it.

  93. And just as when we're kids,

  94. we divide our thoughts of wrongdoing

  95. into categories of big sins and little sins.

  96. Did you do that when you were a kid?

  97. We used to do that.

  98. We'd say, well, the big sins are things like murder,

  99. and the little sin is just the thing that I do.

  100. Right?

  101. That's how we weigh them out.

  102. Well, the Pharisees weren't really actually very different than that.

  103. They had divided the law and their traditions

  104. into two different categories.

  105. They had the things that they felt were weightier laws,

  106. and they had things that they felt were less laws,

  107. lesser laws,

  108. things that they felt were strictly binding

  109. that they would not waver on,

  110. and then they had things that they felt like were less binding.

  111. Maybe there's a little gray area.

  112. Maybe we can find some ways to get around it.

  113. And Jesus did that too.

  114. Jesus had times where he weighed out the weightiness.

  115. He told the Pharisees,

  116. at one point you tithe with dill and cumin,

  117. but you ignore the weightier things of the law.

  118. Now, Jesus wasn't saying that some sins

  119. are less important than other sins.

  120. He's just categorizing the backwardness

  121. in the Pharisees' thinking in that moment.

  122. But the Pharisees took that a little different.

  123. They were trying to find these lesser things,

  124. and the problem is that the debate was so subjective

  125. because they would often point to the weightier things

  126. as the things that they felt easier to follow,

  127. and then the lesser things, of course,

  128. would be the things that maybe they struggled with personally.

  129. So this is a common question.

  130. The one that the man asked Jesus

  131. is a common question among the scribes,

  132. but what's really behind the question

  133. is what lies at the heart of every system

  134. of works-based salvation and religion.

  135. In asking Jesus to summarize the entire law

  136. in one single command,

  137. here's what the scribe was asking the Lord.

  138. Sincerely granted, I really truly believe

  139. that he was asking this sincerely at this point.

  140. He's asking Jesus,

  141. Lord, what is one great command that I can follow

  142. and that in obedience to that command,

  143. I can satisfy God?

  144. That's really what he's asking here.

  145. Jesus, rabbi, teacher,

  146. if you could just summarize it

  147. into one thing that I can do,

  148. just one thing that I can do,

  149. and if in doing that thing,

  150. I will be able to satisfy the wrath of God

  151. against my sin.

  152. So knowing that he couldn't possibly achieve perfection,

  153. the perfection that's required by God's standards,

  154. he was determined to get as close as he possibly could,

  155. hoping that God would then reward his effort.

  156. Now let's go back and revisit our opening illustration.

  157. Here's what this scribe was trying to do.

  158. He was aiming for the one yard line.

  159. He's not aiming for the end zone here.

  160. He's aiming for the one yard line,

  161. hoping that if he can at least make it that far,

  162. that God will just help him out

  163. and just kind of carry him the rest of the way.

  164. He's close.

  165. He's close.

  166. But he's not there.

  167. And of course, we all know people

  168. who live with that same mindset.

  169. I'm not perfect, they may say,

  170. but I'm sure God will give me some credit

  171. for trying my best.

  172. I mean, what else can I do

  173. but my best?

  174. And for these people,

  175. Jesus is a moral example to be followed,

  176. but he's not a savior

  177. to which they must cast all their faith and hope.

  178. They become their own savior.

  179. Jesus is the example,

  180. but if I can just do my best to be like him,

  181. then God will accept me.

  182. And they've missed the whole point.

  183. They're close.

  184. They're not in.

  185. But Jesus can be your savior today

  186. because he did indeed perfectly fulfill the law of God

  187. that each and every one of us continually violate.

  188. So salvation does not come to those who do their best,

  189. but to those who trust only

  190. in the righteousness of Christ on their behalf.

  191. That's what Paul was on about in Romans chapter three.

  192. Many of you have read this

  193. in preparation for our Lakeside Connect.

  194. Here's what he says,

  195. And he continues,

  196. for there's no distinction.

  197. All have sinned.

  198. All fall short of the glory of God.

  199. But anyone who is justified

  200. is justified by his grace as a gift

  201. through the redemption that's in Christ Jesus,

  202. whom God put forth as a propitiation

  203. by his blood to be received by faith.

  204. Substitute.

  205. A satisfaction for God's wrath

  206. does not come by any righteousness that we have

  207. because as Isaiah said,

  208. our righteousness compared to God's

  209. is like a filthy rag,

  210. but not Jesus

  211. because Jesus perfectly fulfilled that law.

  212. He perfectly fulfilled the law.

  213. So he is truly righteous.

  214. And by faith in him,

  215. God then grants us the righteousness of Christ.

  216. Number two,

  217. the Lord's insight.

  218. The Lord's insight.

  219. So the scribe asked the Lord for one great law.

  220. Jesus gave him two.

  221. Now Jesus didn't provide this answer

  222. just to teach that,

  223. or to agree in any way

  224. that it's possible to earn salvation.

  225. He gives this answer here

  226. to actually expose the impossibility

  227. of earning salvation.

  228. We read it a moment ago.

  229. Who could ever keep these demands?

  230. No one.

  231. There are two parts to it.

  232. The first one is this.

  233. Jesus says you got to love God.

  234. You got to love God.

  235. Verse 29.

  236. Jesus answered,

  237. the most important is,

  238. hear, O Israel,

  239. the Lord our God,

  240. the Lord is one,

  241. and you shall love the Lord your God

  242. with all your heart,

  243. with all your soul,

  244. with all your mind,

  245. and with all your strength.

  246. This first part of Jesus's answer

  247. is a direct quote

  248. from Deuteronomy chapter six,

  249. verses four and five.

  250. It is known as the Shema.

  251. The Hebrew word to hear

  252. is what that means,

  253. which begins the statement,

  254. hear, O Israel.

  255. Devout Jews,

  256. recite the Shema

  257. in the morning

  258. and in the evening

  259. of every day.

  260. Hear, O Israel,

  261. the Lord our God,

  262. the Lord is one.

  263. You shall love him

  264. with all your heart,

  265. soul, mind,

  266. and strength.

  267. And of course,

  268. in Deuteronomy six,

  269. this is what they were commanded

  270. by Moses to teach

  271. to their children

  272. and to talk about all day.

  273. This was an important command.

  274. Everybody knew it.

  275. And the command begins

  276. with the affirmation

  277. that there is only one God

  278. to love and worship

  279. and it rejects

  280. any form of idolatry

  281. that might be present

  282. in our lives.

  283. So think about this.

  284. To fulfill this command

  285. is to live a life

  286. that never

  287. seeks personal will

  288. over the will of God.

  289. Now let me ask you something.

  290. Have you ever pursued

  291. your will

  292. with a complete disregard

  293. to whatever God

  294. might desire instead?

  295. Because if you've ever

  296. done that,

  297. you've broken this command.

  298. You've already fallen short.

  299. It is to wholly pursue

  300. the Creator

  301. and His purpose

  302. in creating you

  303. rather than pursuing

  304. self-identity

  305. or self-glory

  306. or self-pleasure.

  307. this is the demand

  308. of God's law.

  309. We love

  310. and glorify Him

  311. as our only

  312. one

  313. and Savior

  314. God.

  315. Even

  316. when it comes

  317. to denying ourselves

  318. to do so.

  319. Now we don't really

  320. have to go any further.

  321. We already know

  322. we broke that.

  323. Who could keep

  324. that law?

  325. Who could keep

  326. that command?

  327. But Jesus continues

  328. and He gives

  329. four categories

  330. of our being

  331. in which God

  332. is to be the object

  333. of our total love

  334. and devotion.

  335. He says we're to love

  336. the Lord

  337. with all our heart

  338. which is setting

  339. all of our affection

  340. on Him

  341. and tuning

  342. our emotions

  343. to His person

  344. and His will.

  345. He says we're to love

  346. the Lord

  347. with all of our soul.

  348. That is to

  349. place God

  350. and His glory

  351. at the center

  352. of your whole being.

  353. That when you think

  354. who am I

  355. you have no other thought

  356. than a creature

  357. of the living God

  358. for whom I live

  359. in everything that I do.

  360. That is to love

  361. the Lord

  362. with all your soul.

  363. It is to put Him

  364. first in all your ambition.

  365. It is to live your life

  366. in total service to Him.

  367. And then He says

  368. even beyond that

  369. that's hard enough, right?

  370. All your heart

  371. and all your soul.

  372. Then He says

  373. you gotta do it

  374. with all your mind as well.

  375. You have to think

  376. with pure thoughts.

  377. Discipline

  378. and surrender

  379. your thoughts

  380. to align with

  381. the truths of God

  382. as He has given them

  383. in the Scriptures.

  384. Not as you wish

  385. He had given them

  386. in the Scriptures

  387. but as He has given them.

  388. It is to trust

  389. His ways

  390. are best

  391. even when you don't

  392. understand them.

  393. And then He says

  394. you love the Lord

  395. with all your strength.

  396. That's to put

  397. all of your work

  398. and energy

  399. toward obeying

  400. and following Him.

  401. When it comes

  402. to loving the Lord

  403. in this way

  404. there's no such thing

  405. as retirement.

  406. There's never a time

  407. in your life

  408. where you set aside

  409. all of your energy

  410. and all of your ambition

  411. and all of your things

  412. and you direct them

  413. away from what

  414. God's desire is

  415. for your life

  416. in order to pursue

  417. self-identity

  418. and self-glory

  419. and self-pleasure.

  420. It just isn't.

  421. You can't love God

  422. and self.

  423. It doesn't work.

  424. It doesn't work.

  425. Kent Hughes said

  426. heart, soul, mind

  427. and strength

  428. were not intended

  429. as a breakdown

  430. or a psychological analysis

  431. of human personality.

  432. They simply meant

  433. that everything

  434. was to be devoted

  435. to loving God.

  436. Everything.

  437. I'm all yours, Lord.

  438. Lord.

  439. Have you ever

  440. done that perfectly?

  441. I haven't.

  442. I don't know

  443. that I've done

  444. that perfectly

  445. even today.

  446. So we've already

  447. fallen short.

  448. So this man's

  449. looking for one

  450. great command

  451. he can follow

  452. that would satisfy God

  453. and the first thing

  454. that Jesus leads off

  455. with is an impossibility.

  456. But he doesn't

  457. stop there.

  458. He also says

  459. we're to love others.

  460. Verse 31.

  461. The second is this,

  462. Jesus said,

  463. you shall love

  464. your neighbor

  465. as yourself.

  466. This is a quote

  467. from Leviticus 19

    Leviticus 19:18

  468. verse 18.

  469. And it makes

  470. perfect sense,

  471. right?

  472. That Jesus

  473. would attach

  474. this command

  475. directly to the

  476. command to love

  477. God

  478. because love

  479. for others

  480. flows directly

  481. out of our love

  482. for God.

  483. Right?

  484. Listen,

  485. to love God

  486. is to love

  487. what he loves.

  488. What does he love?

  489. Us.

  490. To truly love God

  491. means that the

  492. natural reflex

  493. of our hearts

  494. is going to be

  495. to extend

  496. our love

  497. and affection

  498. and kindness

  499. to the others

  500. in which God

  501. has created

  502. not because

  503. we line up

  504. with him

  505. and everything

  506. and that our

  507. personalities

  508. perfectly mesh

  509. and that we

  510. necessarily

  511. want to be

  512. kind

  513. but because

  514. we love

  515. him

  516. we will

  517. by nature

  518. love

  519. them.

  520. Think about

  521. this.

  522. His grace

  523. in some measure

  524. is extended

  525. to every human

  526. being

  527. every single

  528. day.

  529. Even the ones

  530. who utterly

  531. reject him

  532. and hate him.

  533. They still

  534. enjoy the

  535. rising of the

  536. sun.

  537. They enjoy

  538. the blessings

  539. of the food

  540. that he provides

  541. in the earth

  542. that he's given.

  543. He provides

  544. them with air

  545. to breathe

  546. and life

  547. to live

  548. and beauty

  549. to behold.

  550. All of that

  551. to the very

  552. people who

  553. reject and

  554. hate him.

  555. Is that

  556. not the way

  557. that the

  558. scripture

  559. continually

  560. teaches us

  561. that we're

  562. to love

  563. our enemies?

  564. Not because

  565. we're just

  566. good at it

  567. but because

  568. that's exactly

  569. what God

  570. does and

  571. as we love

  572. God it makes

  573. sense that

  574. Jesus would say

  575. then the next

  576. thing right behind

  577. that is that

  578. you're going to

  579. love others

  580. the same way.

  581. first because

  582. of God's

  583. love.

  584. The inerrant

  585. dignity of

  586. human life

  587. is wrapped

  588. up in this

  589. command.

  590. Because God

  591. has imprinted

  592. his very image

  593. on every

  594. human we

  595. are to

  596. treat one

  597. another with

  598. love and

  599. respect.

  600. But notice

  601. how Jesus

  602. commanded for

  603. us to love.

  604. Love others

  605. the way you

  606. love yourself.

  607. love others

  608. the way you

  609. love yourself.

  610. I don't know

  611. about you but I'm

  612. pretty good at

  613. loving myself.

  614. It's pretty easy

  615. for me to tell

  616. Jared yes even

  617. when Jared hasn't

  618. been real good to

  619. Jared because I

  620. love Jared.

  621. He's my favorite.

  622. Jesus says love

  623. others the way

  624. you love yourself.

  625. Love others the

  626. way you love

  627. yourself.

  628. It's interesting he

  629. doesn't say love

  630. others the way you

  631. love God because he

  632. knows we love

  633. ourselves more than

  634. we love God.

  635. He says you need

  636. to love others

  637. that way.

  638. In every

  639. situation we're

  640. to treat other

  641. people the way we

  642. would hope to be

  643. treated given that

  644. the circumstances

  645. were in reverse.

  646. James Edwards

  647. said love for God

  648. releases the love

  649. of God.

  650. Love for God

  651. releases the love

  652. of God.

  653. You love him

  654. you won't be able

  655. to help it

  656. but show his love

  657. for others.

  658. This is what John

  659. was on about in

  660. 1 John chapter 4.

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  661. Beloved let us not

  662. love one another

  663. or let us love one

  664. another for love is

  665. from God and whoever

  666. loves has been born

  667. of God and knows

  668. God.

  669. Anyone who does not

  670. love does not know

  671. God because God is

  672. love.

  673. but notice how Jesus

  674. ends the statement

  675. verse 31.

  676. He says love God

  677. love others.

  678. There is no other

  679. commandment greater

  680. than these.

  681. No other commandment

  682. greater than these

  683. Jesus says.

  684. And this is so

  685. important.

  686. This statement might

  687. be the most important

  688. of all of them

  689. because it it

  690. corrects the errant

  691. perspective of the

  692. scribe's question.

  693. In Matthew 22

  694. Matthew writes that

  695. Jesus added this

  696. statement.

  697. He says that all of

  698. the law and the

  699. prophets that's a

  700. single title for the

  701. Old Testament.

  702. All of the law and

  703. the prophets depend

  704. on these two

  705. commandments.

  706. What does that

  707. mean?

  708. He meant that all

  709. the lesser quote

  710. lesser commands are

  711. subsumed or absorbed

  712. into these two

  713. summary statements.

  714. Now an example of

  715. that is the Ten

  716. Commandments.

  717. The first four

  718. commandments are all

  719. under and underneath

  720. and subsumed in this

  721. command to love God.

  722. Love God.

  723. No graven image.

  724. Don't take his name

  725. in vain.

  726. Remember the Sabbath.

  727. Keep it holy.

  728. All of that is about

  729. our love for God.

  730. Subsumed in the one

  731. command.

  732. The final six subsumed

  733. in that second command.

  734. Love others as

  735. yourself.

  736. Don't kill them.

  737. Love them.

  738. Don't steal from them.

  739. Love them.

  740. Don't commit adultery

  741. with them or against

  742. them.

  743. Love them.

  744. Don't covet against

  745. them.

  746. Love them.

  747. Don't lie about them.

  748. Love them.

  749. In other words,

  750. to violate a lesser

  751. command is the same

  752. as violating the

  753. greatest commands.

  754. Do you see that?

  755. Jesus says all of the

  756. law, all the law and

  757. the prophets.

  758. They depend on these

  759. two summary statements.

  760. Love God.

  761. Love others.

  762. And if you kill

  763. somebody, you have also

  764. broken the law of love.

  765. If you worship someone

  766. else, you have also

  767. broken the command of

  768. loving God.

  769. In other words, to

  770. break a lesser command

  771. is to break all of the

  772. law, which is exactly

  773. what James told us.

  774. James chapter 2 and

    James 2 chapter mention

  775. verse 10.

  776. So the scribe comes to

  777. Jesus and he says,

  778. just give me one thing,

  779. one thing I can do.

  780. And Jesus says, that's

  781. not possible.

  782. It's not possible.

  783. You can't separate the

  784. law of God.

  785. It is one.

  786. To violate in one point

  787. is to violate in all

  788. points.

  789. So Jesus wasn't giving

  790. this man a path to

  791. follow to earn God's

  792. favor.

  793. What was he doing?

  794. He was leading this

  795. man to the truth and

  796. the understanding that

  797. our best obedience can

  798. never gain eternal life.

  799. Who has ever loved God

  800. and others this way?

  801. No one but Christ.

  802. We've all violated God's

  803. demands.

  804. And it's not possible for

  805. us to make it up through

  806. our efforts and morality

  807. and religion.

  808. The law is not there to

  809. save us.

  810. God gave it to show us

  811. that we need saving.

  812. That we need a Savior.

  813. And all we can do in

  814. responding to this answer

  815. that Jesus gave so

  816. profoundly is to say,

  817. have mercy on me.

  818. I can't do that.

  819. I've never done that.

  820. I'll never be able to do

  821. that perfectly.

  822. Lord, have mercy on me.

  823. And fortunately for us,

  824. God is full of grace.

  825. And mercy.

  826. Micah chapter 7 and verse

    Micah 7 chapter mention

  827. 18, the prophet writes,

  828. Who is a God like you?

  829. Pardoning iniquity and

  830. passing over transgression

  831. for the remnant of his

  832. inheritance.

  833. He does not retain his

  834. anger forever because he

  835. delights in steadfast love.

  836. He delights in mercy and

  837. grace.

  838. Finally, we see the final

  839. assessments.

  840. The final assessments.

  841. This exchange concludes

  842. with two of them.

  843. The first is from the

  844. scribe.

  845. The second is from the

  846. Lord.

  847. So the scribe assessed

  848. the answer.

  849. That's what he did.

  850. The scribe assessed the

  851. answer.

  852. Look with me at verse 32.

  853. And the scribe said to

  854. him, You are right,

  855. teacher.

  856. You have truly said that

  857. he is one and there is no

  858. other besides him.

  859. And to love him with all

  860. the heart and with all the

  861. understanding and with all

  862. the strength and to love

  863. one's neighbor as oneself is

  864. much more than all whole

  865. burnt offerings and

  866. sacrifices.

  867. That's a pretty incredible

  868. answer.

  869. It's nearly a perfect answer,

  870. actually.

  871. This is the only place in

  872. Mark's gospel that we ever

  873. find a friendly exchange

  874. between Jesus and a

  875. scribe.

  876. And this man was not only

  877. kind to Jesus in this

  878. answer, but he gave a

  879. glowing review of the

  880. Lord's answer.

  881. He's clearly impressed by

  882. Jesus's intellect and

  883. wisdom.

  884. And I want you to notice how

  885. truly close he is.

  886. He affirmed the

  887. truthfulness of Jesus's

  888. teaching.

  889. He literally said, You're

  890. right.

  891. You're right, teacher.

  892. That's the right answer.

  893. He's affirming that Jesus

  894. is true and that his

  895. teaching is as well.

  896. Secondly, he agreed with

  897. Jesus's theology.

  898. You have truly said he is

  899. one.

  900. Now, there were probably

  901. certainly things that they

  902. didn't line up with.

  903. But as far as this text is

  904. concerned in this

  905. conversation, this man's

  906. theology and Jesus's

  907. theology are one in the

  908. same.

  909. They both believe that the

  910. Lord is one.

  911. He even viewed the law as

  912. primarily spiritual, not

  913. external.

  914. Notice what he says at the

  915. end.

  916. That all of these things,

  917. loving God, loving others,

  918. is much more than all whole

  919. burnt offerings and

  920. sacrifices.

  921. There's a lot of Christians

  922. that don't understand that.

  923. And here is this scribe

  924. saying what God said

  925. through Isaiah.

  926. That I don't care about

  927. your following the law.

  928. I don't care about all the

  929. sacrifices and all the

  930. rituals if I don't have

  931. your heart.

  932. And this man recognizes all

  933. of those things.

  934. Do you see how close he is?

  935. So what's the problem?

  936. The problem is not what he

  937. said.

  938. The problem is that he

  939. didn't take it far enough.

  940. He assessed only Jesus's

  941. answer when he should have

  942. assessed the Lord himself.

  943. He was only intellectually

  944. concerned about this

  945. conversation.

  946. What he should have done is

  947. considered the identity of

  948. Jesus and its implications

  949. on his faith.

  950. He saw Jesus's answer.

  951. He saw Jesus's actions.

  952. And he thought,

  953. wonderful, fantastic.

  954. But he never saw Jesus.

  955. He saw all the things Jesus

  956. taught, all the things Jesus

  957. did, but he looked right

  958. past the Lord himself.

  959. So he assesses the answers,

  960. but he doesn't assess the

  961. Lord.

  962. So he never understood.

  963. James tells us again in

  964. chapter 2 and verse 19, he

  965. says, you believe that God

  966. is one.

  967. You do well.

  968. This man, that's the whole

  969. conversation.

  970. We agree, Jesus.

  971. God is one.

  972. James says, you believe God

  973. is one.

  974. Great.

  975. You do well.

  976. But think about this.

  977. James says, even the demons

  978. believe.

  979. And they shudder.

  980. They tremble.

  981. So what's the difference

  982. between the theology of the

  983. demons and a theology of

  984. someone in the kingdom, a

  985. true believer?

  986. Demons intellectually assent

  987. to the truths of God.

  988. They recognize that they are

  989. true.

  990. They do not deny the factual

  991. existence of Jesus's identity

  992. and his purpose and all that

  993. he was going to do.

  994. The difference is theirs is

  995. purely intellectual.

  996. Disciples surrender

  997. themselves in faith and

  998. obedience to Jesus Christ.

  999. Jesus.

1000. And just like this scribe, there

1001. are many people who will be

  1002. friendly to Jesus.

  1003. They'll even intellectually agree

  1004. with his general theology.

1005. Yet they will fail to receive

1006. him as Lord and Savior.

1007. And that's where the scribe is.

  1008. He's close.

  1009. Real close.

1010. Close enough to think that he's

  1011. in.

  1012. But he's not.

1013. Well, that gets to Jesus's

  1014. assessment.

  1015. Jesus assessed the scribe.

  1016. He assesses the scribe.

  1017. Look at verse 34.

1018. And when Jesus saw that he

1019. answered wisely, he said to

1020. him, you are not far from the

  1021. kingdom of God.

1022. This must have come as a

  1023. stunning statement to this

  1024. man.

  1025. Because they haven't been

1026. talking about the kingdom of

  1027. God.

1028. Surely he thinks this is coming

1029. out of left field a little

  1030. bit, right?

1031. They were in this debate about

  1032. the law.

1033. Why all of a sudden this

  1034. statement about the kingdom

1035. of God and eternal life?

1036. Where is that coming from?

1037. And why in the world is he

1038. saying that I'm close to it?

1039. Because by saying that he's

1040. close to it, he's basically

1041. saying you're not in it.

  1042. You're on the outside.

1043. Again, we see Jesus making

  1044. this distinction in Mark's

  1045. gospel between insiders and

  1046. outsiders.

  1047. His assessment, you're close

1048. to the kingdom, but you're not

  1049. in the kingdom.

1050. And by the way, this statement,

1051. I believe, comes from the

  1052. depths of Jesus's compassion

  1053. for that man.

1054. His heart was not as hard as

  1055. the Pharisees.

  1056. And Herodians and Sadducees

  1057. before him.

1058. Jesus left them in their

  1059. darkness.

1060. He doesn't do that with this

  1061. scribe.

  1062. He compassionately leads this

  1063. man to truth.

1064. And some would look at this

1065. passage and say, Jesus was

  1066. being really rude.

1067. They would think Jesus was

1068. kind of mean to this man.

  1069. Here's this man doing

  1070. everything that he can.

1071. And it seems like he's really,

  1072. he seems like he's on Jesus's

  1073. side here.

1074. And yet Jesus doesn't actually

1075. give him the peace of knowing

1076. that he has eternal life.

1077. He actually tells him that he's

  1078. not quite there yet.

1079. That's actually kind of rude and

  1080. judgmental.

1081. But that's not what Jesus is

  1082. doing.

1083. We actually find that Jesus's

1084. true love is seen here for this

  1085. man.

1086. And it's seen in the fact that he

1087. told the man the truth.

1088. How much must you hate someone

1089. to let them continue thinking that

1090. they know Christ when they don't?

1091. How much must you hate them to let

1092. them claim to be a Christian when

  1093. you know that they're not a

  1094. Christian?

1095. How much must you hate them to let

1096. them continue in error and even

1097. capitulate to that error knowing

1098. full well that they do not know the

  1099. Lord Jesus?

1100. This wasn't Jesus being rude.

1101. This is Jesus showing his love.

  1102. He's loving this man.

1103. And this passage reveals so many

1104. things that can get you close to

1105. salvation without ever receiving it.

1106. This man was fervently religious.

1107. His whole life, his whole career

1108. was wrapped up in studying and

  1109. interpreting the Old Testament.

1110. That's what he did for his life.

1111. He's fervently religious, but his

1112. religion could only get him close.

1113. He's zealous of good works.

1114. That was the point of his question.

  1115. What's one thing I can do?

1116. How can I be better so that I can be

  1117. accepted?

  1118. That's his question.

1119. He's zealous for good works, but his

1120. good works can only get him close.

1121. The man agreed with sound doctrine.

1122. He might have had more biblical wisdom

1123. in this statement about burnt offerings

1124. and sacrifices than any other of the

1125. scribes that we've read about in the

  1126. gospels.

  1127. But his theological positions

1128. could only get him close.

1129. And maybe you're very much like the

  1130. scribe.

1131. Maybe your fervency in religious things

  1132. has gotten you close.

1133. Or maybe you're just a good guy.

1134. And that's gotten you close.

1135. And you can tell me who Jesus is.

1136. And you can tell me all about asking

1137. Jesus in your heart and all those kinds

  1138. of things.

1139. You can tell me all the stuff that you

  1140. want to tell me.

1141. And all those things are only getting you

  1142. close.

1143. And perhaps you're so close that you think

  1144. you're in and you're not.

1145. So we have to ask the question.

1146. How do we move from being close to being

  1147. in?

1148. And to get this answer, I think we'll be

1149. helped to go back to chapter one.

1150. You can turn there if you'd like.

1151. Remember at the very beginning of our

1152. study about eight or nine years ago, we

1153. began studying the gospel of Mark.

1154. Feels that way, doesn't it?

1155. Remember when Jesus came on the scene?

  1156. John was arrested.

1157. What was it that characterized Jesus'

  1158. ministry?

  1159. Was this preaching?

1160. What was the message that he preached?

  1161. Verse 14.

1162. After John was arrested, Jesus came into

1163. Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God,

  1164. saying,

  1165. The time is fulfilled.

1166. The kingdom of God is at hand.

1167. Repent and believe in the gospel.

1168. This question of how can I move from

1169. being close to being in?

1170. That's the question Jesus had been

  1171. answering for three years.

1172. His preaching about the kingdom.

  1173. This was the answer.

1174. Jesus himself is the answer.

1175. He is the representative of the kingdom

1176. of God that he says is near.

1177. He's not talking about the kingdom is

1178. near as far as timing.

  1179. He's speaking spatially.

1180. He himself is the representative of the

  1181. kingdom.

  1182. He is there.

  1183. He is at hand.

1184. His purposes are about to be fulfilled.

  1185. Jesus is the answer.

1186. Because of his identity as the son of God

1187. and Messiah, he fulfilled God's demands

  1188. perfectly.

1189. That's why his death on the cross

1190. is a sufficient substitute for sinners.

1191. If he had sinned, he couldn't die for our sins.

1192. He'd have to die for his own.

1193. But because he is the son of God and the Messiah,

1194. he fulfilled God's law perfectly.

1195. Therefore, his death was not to pay for his own sins,

1196. but to pay for the sins of those

1197. who would follow and believe him.

1198. And in the sacrifice of Christ,

1199. as we mentioned last week,

1200. God takes, God the Father puts our sin on Jesus

1201. in order that he might put Jesus's righteousness on us.

1202. And then his resurrection guarantees

1203. that his sacrifice on the cross is sufficient.

1204. It proves that he has power and authority

  1205. over life and death.

1206. Therefore, he is the one that can either grant us eternal life

1207. or judge us to eternal death.

1208. And how was it that Jesus said in Mark 1

1209. as he preached this gospel of the kingdom?

1210. How is it that he said we are to respond to these things?

1211. This is the answer to how you get in.

1212. Jesus said, repent and believe the good news.

  1213. What good news?

  1214. Repent and believe Jesus.

  1215. Trust him.

1216. Turn away from your sin.

1217. Turn away from your morality.

1218. Turn away from your religious fervency.

1219. Turn away from your orthodoxy.

1220. Turn away from all these other things you're trusting

1221. to gain you some kind of favor with God.

1222. And Jesus says, turn away from those things

1223. and believe the good news.

1224. The good news that you can't get salvation,

1225. only I can give it to you.

1226. And if you will just come to me and believe and follow me,

1227. I will give it to you freely.

1228. We forsake all else and we follow him.

1229. You cannot earn eternal life.

1230. You can only trust that Jesus Christ has secured it on your behalf.

1231. And if you can come to a point where you wholeheartedly agree

1232. and cast yourself on the mercy and love of Jesus Christ,

1233. that is the moment that you move from being near the kingdom

1234. to being in the kingdom.

1235. And I want to close with the end of verse 34.

1236. Look how Jesus finishes the conversation back in chapter 12.

1237. Or excuse me, that's how Mark closes the conversation.

  1238. Mark says, after that,

1239. no one dared to ask him any more questions.

1240. Now, why do you think they stopped asking him questions?

1241. Why do you think they stopped asking him questions?

1242. Certainly part of this is

1243. that they came to the realization

1244. that they weren't going to be able to trap him

1245. the way that they thought they could.

1246. So they stopped trying perhaps.

1247. I think there's another part to it.

1248. I actually think this is the dominant reason.

1249. I think there was nothing left to ask.

1250. There's nothing left to ask.

1251. For three years, these men have watched him.

1252. They have scrutinized everything that he did.

1253. They have witnessed his miracles.

1254. They have seen his power.

1255. They have heard his teaching.

1256. They have asked every question they can ask.

1257. They have exhausted every intellectual means

1258. of refuting and disproving his identity and message.

1259. But they failed every time.

1260. There's only one action left for them to take.

  1261. And it's not a question.

  1262. It's a decision.

1263. The only thing left for them

1264. is whether or not they're going to receive him,

1265. believe him, and follow him.

1266. Or are they going to reject him

  1267. and deny him outright?

1268. And can I ask you, are you in that place today?

1269. Have you exhausted every question in your attempt

1270. to discern the person and work of Jesus?

1271. You've been asking maybe good questions

  1272. and right questions,

1273. and you've asked everything you can ask,

1274. and it seems like every time you get in a conversation

1275. with somebody about the Bible or Christianity

1276. or life or whatever it is,

1277. yet now you're at the point

1278. where you're just circling around

1279. to the same things over and over again.

1280. There's really nothing left to ask.

1281. Are you friendly toward him,

  1282. but still unsure?

1283. Perhaps what you need to do

1284. is stop fiddling around with the questions

  1285. and just decide

1286. whether or not you're going to believe him

1287. or you're going to walk away from him.

1288. Please don't wait another moment.

1289. You can come to him today.

  1290. There's no perfect time.

  1291. Now is the time.

1292. You're not going to come up with a question

  1293. to stump him.

1294. You're not going to find a way,

1295. no matter how hard you try,

  1296. to disprove him.

1297. It's time to just decide,

1298. am I going to follow him

1299. or am I going to walk away?

1300. And I want to leave you with Jesus' words

  1301. and then we'll close.

  1302. Matthew 11.

  1303. Jesus himself said,

1304. and I believe he says this to you today,

  1305. come to me.

  1306. Come to me,

  1307. all who labor

  1308. and are heavy laden

1309. and I will give you rest.

1310. Take my yoke upon you.

  1311. Learn from me.

1312. For I am gentle and lowly in heart

1313. and you will find rest for your soul.

1314. For my yoke is easy

  1315. and my burden

  1316. is light.

  1317. for you,

  1318. for you,

  1319. for you,

  1320. for you,

  1321. for you,

  1322. for you,

  1323. for you,

  1324. for you,

  1325. for you,

  1326. for you,

  1327. for you,
