  1. There is some debate about the exact timing of the events recorded here in Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  2. But one of the things that we are certain of is that these discussions that Jesus is having here

  3. between these different groups of religious leaders took place somewhere between 24 and 48 hours

  4. prior to the Passover celebration in Jerusalem.

  5. And we've talked about this a little bit in the build-up through these last couple of chapters

  6. at the busyness that would have been the city of Jerusalem at that time.

  7. You remember maybe some weeks ago we talked about an early historian, Jewish historian,

  8. had talked about just a few years after this about two and a half million people had gathered in Jerusalem

  9. for the Passover celebration.

  10. So you can just imagine in old city Jerusalem, not the metropolis that it is now,

  11. but old city Jerusalem, you can imagine just hordes of people,

  12. the busyness that comes along really even around the temple

  13. with the events leading up to the Passover celebration

  14. and the Feast of Unleavened Bread that would follow thereafter.

  15. And in the midst of all of that, there's no question that the gospel authors intended for us to understand

  16. this section of Jesus' life and teaching in light of the Passover itself,

  17. in light of the theological significance of what the Passover was in the Old Testament

  18. and for the Jews and what that was going to mean in regards to Jesus' life and his death and his resurrection.

  19. But I'm certain that during this Passover week,

  20. thoughts of the Messiah would have been ever present in the minds

  21. and in the conversations of the people in Jerusalem.

  22. It just makes sense, right?

  23. The point of the Passover is to reflect on the Exodus coming out of Egypt, right?

  24. They're reflecting on the goodness of God in that Exodus

  25. and then in the midst of that, they are anticipating another Exodus.

  26. They're anticipating a Messiah who will come and rescue them in their minds

  27. from Roman oppression in the same way that God had delivered the nation out of Egyptian oppression so many years before.

  28. For this particular Passover week, the presence of Jesus in Jerusalem

  29. certainly would have tremendously heightened this awareness of Messianic prophecy and expectation.

  30. So it makes perfect sense then that Jesus would teach a lesson on the identity and purpose of the Christ,

  31. which is exactly what verses 35 to 37 are.

  32. He's asking questions in order that he might get the people to consider

  33. or perhaps reconsider their thoughts about the Messiah and his purpose.

  34. So the religious leaders have taken their turns at trying to trap Jesus in his words,

  35. but his responses to their, quote, unanswerable questions are not only adequate, they're profound.

  36. So that we read in our last passage that no one dared ask him another question.

  37. And so Jesus turns the tables now.

  38. He asks a question of his own, a question as far as the New Testament records are concerned,

  39. were unanswered by the people in the crowd.

  40. Using the Bible, Jesus challenged the errant assumptions about the Messiah that were so common in Israel,

  41. and he was leading them to examine his true identity.

  42. Now, do you remember Mark's purpose in writing this gospel?

  43. All the way back in the very first verse of chapter one,

  44. what does Mark say his intent is?

  45. His aim is to proclaim the good news that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah and the Son of God.

  46. And everything that follows in Mark's gospel is serving that purpose.

  47. Now we get to these three verses here.

  48. And in a public forum in the midst of the temple area in Jerusalem,

  49. Jesus takes on that same aim.

  50. That's what these verses are doing.

  51. Jesus is proclaiming the good news that he is the Messiah and the Son of God.

  52. He's the Son of David.

  53. He's the Son of God.

  54. And I want to show you as we work through these verses that the Lord's questions here, rhetorical as they were,

  55. were a matter of interpretation.

  56. They're a matter of inspiration.

  57. And then they're a matter of identification.

  58. And my prayer is that we'll all come to hear him as gladly as the crowd heard him there in verse 37.

  59. First, let's see a matter of interpretation.

  60. A matter of interpretation.

  61. Look with me at verse 35 again.

  62. Jesus taught in the temple.

  63. He said,

  64. How can the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?

  65. That's the initial question.

  66. Now, there's a lot of scribes around.

  67. And Jesus is going to keep dealing with scribes as he goes on even beyond this conversation.

  68. But as the midst of this great crowd that is gathered with him in the temple,

  69. his first question is,

  70. How can these fellows over here, your experts,

  71. how can they say that Jesus, or not Jesus, but the Christ is the Son of David?

  72. And just in case there may be anyone who is a little confused by that language,

  73. let me just take a quick minute to refresh us on what we mean when we use this term Messiah.

  74. Okay?

  75. It starts all the way back in Genesis.

  76. Right?

  77. Genesis 3 records the very first sin committed by the very first people God created.

  78. We know their names, Adam and Eve.

  79. Because God is holy,

  80. He has to judge sin.

  81. And Adam's disobedience to the Lord in the garden

  82. plunges the created world,

  83. God's created world,

  84. into and underneath

  85. the wrath of God's judgment,

  86. the curse of God's judgment.

  87. That's what's happening in Genesis 3.

  88. And the pinnacle of that judgment

  89. is what?

  90. Death.

  91. That's the pinnacle of it.

  92. There's lots of things related to the curse,

  93. but it all eventually leads to the reality of and the certainty of death.

  94. But while God is proclaiming those consequences in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  95. He tucks in this promise.

  96. This promise that He would, at some point,

  97. send a Savior,

  98. who would, as the Bible goes on to explain,

  99. would defeat death

  100. and would restore creation

  101. to God's intended purpose.

  102. God is saying,

  103. and in His patience,

  104. and in His long-suffering,

  105. God allows man

  106. to continue to exist.

  107. Have you ever considered that?

  108. God told Adam and Eve

  109. one thing not to do.

  110. And He said,

  111. In the day that you eat of the tree,

  112. you shall surely die.

  113. And the day that they ate of it,

  114. it would have been perfectly just

  115. and within

  116. the rightness

  117. and righteousness of God

  118. to do away with Adam and Eve

  119. and to take away their lives

  120. immediately in that moment.

  121. But in His patience and long-suffering,

  122. He continues to allow them to live

  123. in a cursed world,

  124. but they live.

  125. That's a part of God's grace

  126. coming through even from the very beginning.

  127. And God has allowed

  128. mankind to continue to exist

  129. ever since.

  130. But then He made

  131. all of these different promises

  132. at different points in history.

  133. Covenants

  134. He makes with His people.

  135. each one

  136. building on the other,

  137. explaining how He is going

  138. to send this Savior,

  139. how He is going to provide

  140. this redemption,

  141. how He is going to make things right,

  142. and He's going to set the course

  143. of the world

  144. back to its intended purpose.

  145. And this coming Savior

  146. that the Bible continues to speak of,

  147. that's what we mean,

  148. that's who we're referring to

  149. when we use words like

  150. Messiah and Lord

  151. and Christ.

  152. And those covenants

  153. were provided through God's people,

  154. His chosen nation, Israel,

  155. which is why the Jews

  156. are so significantly concerned

  157. about this particular topic.

  158. And so Jesus' question

  159. in verse 35

  160. is a direct challenge

  161. to their interpretation

  162. of the identity

  163. and purpose

  164. of this Savior.

  165. That's what's happening.

  166. That's the backdrop

  167. to all of this.

  168. They have this mindset

  169. of who this Savior will be,

  170. what He will be like,

  171. and what He will do.

  172. And what Jesus is doing

  173. with this question

  174. is He's challenging

  175. that interpretation

  176. that they have,

  177. specifically as it relates

  178. to a title,

  179. Son of David.

  180. The Son of David

  181. is a common title

  182. used by the Jews

  183. to refer to this

  184. Messianic figure.

  185. And it's actually rooted

  186. in one of those covenants.

  187. 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  188. I think I may actually have this

  189. on the screen for you to see.

  190. 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  191. God says this to David.

  192. When your days are fulfilled

  193. and you lie down

  194. with your fathers,

  195. I will raise up

  196. your offspring after you.

  197. Offspring there is singular.

  198. I will raise up

  199. your offspring after you

  200. who shall come from your body

  201. and I will establish

  202. His kingdom.

  203. He shall build a house

  204. for my name

  205. and I will establish

  206. the throne of His kingdom

  207. forever.

  208. A covenant made with David.

  209. I am bringing one

  210. from your lineage.

  211. This Messiah,

  212. this Savior,

  213. He's going to build

  214. a house for me forever.

  215. When we get to the New Testament

  216. we find out

  217. that's a house

  218. not made with hands.

  219. That's a people

  220. that God is redeeming

  221. for His glory

  222. and for His purpose

  223. as the church of Christ.

  224. Now that may not seem

  225. like very significant to us,

  226. a promise made to David

  227. so many thousands

  228. of years ago.

  229. But this fact

  230. of a Davidic Messiah

  231. is echoed

  232. over and over

  233. and over

  234. in the Old Testament.

  235. Especially in the Psalms

  236. and in the prophets.

  237. And I want to show you

  238. a few passages about this.

  239. Psalm 89 verses 3 and 4.

    Psalms 89:3

  240. You have said,

  241. I have made a covenant

  242. with my chosen one.

  243. I have sworn to David

  244. my servant.

  245. I will establish

  246. your offspring forever

  247. and build your throne

  248. for all generations.

  249. David echoes the covenant.

  250. Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  251. We usually quote this

  252. at Christmas

  253. but think about these words.

  254. For unto us

  255. a child is born.

  256. To us a son is given.

  257. The government shall be

  258. upon His shoulder.

  259. His name shall be called

  260. Wonderful Counselor,

  261. Mighty God,

  262. Everlasting Father,

  263. Prince of Peace.

  264. Of the increase

  265. of His government

  266. and of peace

  267. there will be no end.

  268. On the throne of David

  269. and over His kingdom

  270. to establish it

  271. and to uphold it

  272. with justice

  273. and with righteousness

  274. from this time forth

  275. and forevermore.

  276. The zeal of the Lord of hosts.

  277. will do this thing.

  278. Jeremiah chapter 23.

    Jeremiah 23 chapter mention

  279. Behold,

  280. the days are coming

  281. declares the Lord

  282. when I will raise up

  283. for David

  284. a righteous branch.

  285. Notice branch

  286. is capitalized

  287. in our Bibles

  288. because that's a reference

  289. to this messianic figure.

  290. I will raise up

  291. for David

  292. a righteous branch.

  293. He shall reign

  294. as king

  295. and deal wisely

  296. and shall execute

  297. justice

  298. and righteousness

  299. in the land.

  300. in His days

  301. Judah

  302. will be saved.

  303. Israel

  304. will dwell

  305. securely

  306. and this is the name

  307. by which He will be called.

  308. The Lord

  309. is our

  310. righteousness.

  311. Have you ever wondered

  312. why the Old Testament

  313. is so concerned

  314. with all of those

  315. genealogies?

  316. You ever get on your

  317. one year Bible reading

  318. program

  319. and you get

  320. just a little ways

  321. into it

  322. probably around

  323. this time of year

  324. and you start

  325. hitting those genealogies

  326. and you're like

  327. why in the world

  328. does God want me

  329. to read this?

  330. Why in the world?

  331. That's not about

  332. simple historical records.

  333. That's not why

  334. that's there.

  335. Do you know

  336. what they're for?

  337. They're tracking

  338. the promise of God.

  339. They're tracking

  340. the covenants

  341. of God.

  342. As they recorded

  343. the lineage of David

  344. they're showing

  345. that God's promise

  346. is reliable

  347. and they're showing

  348. that God's promise

  349. is active

  350. and it all comes back

  351. to this covenant

  352. this Davidic Messiah

  353. that God is going

  354. to send

  355. to redeem

  356. His people.

  357. We could go to

  358. many more passages

  359. but my point

  360. is to show you

  361. that there's a really

  362. good reason

  363. why

  364. Son of David

  365. became a prevalent

  366. messianic title

  367. in the time

  368. of Jesus.

  369. Remember in chapter 10

  370. blind Bartimaeus

  371. what is it

  372. that he yells for

  373. as Jesus walks by?

  374. Jesus

  375. Son of

  376. David

  377. Messiah

  378. Lord

  379. So what's Jesus

  380. getting at

  381. with this question then?

  382. Notice back

  383. in verse 35

  384. what is it

  385. that he asks?

  386. How is it

  387. that the scribes

  388. can say

  389. that the Christ

  390. is the

  391. Son of David?

  392. Well we just went

  393. to a bunch

  394. of passages

  395. that show

  396. exactly

  397. why they

  398. could say

  399. that the Messiah

  400. is the

  401. Son of David

  402. so what's Jesus

  403. getting at here?

  404. Is he denying

  405. that the Messiah

  406. is David's son

  407. that he will come

  408. from David's line?

  409. No.

  410. Matthew's account

  411. I think helps us

  412. understand what's

  413. happening here

  414. just a little bit better.

  415. Matthew chapter 22

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  416. he writes

  417. now while the Pharisees

  418. were gathered together

  419. Jesus asked them

  420. a question

  421. saying

  422. what do you think

  423. about the Christ?

  424. Whose son is he?

  425. And here's how

  426. they answer

  427. they said to him

  428. the Son of David

  429. now remember

  430. the common belief

  431. among the Jews

  432. was that the Christ

  433. the Messiah

  434. would be a political

  435. and military figure

  436. whose purpose

  437. was to deliver

  438. Israel from Rome

  439. that was their mind

  440. that's what they thought

  441. he was going to do

  442. they thought of him

  443. only as a human

  444. authority

  445. with an earthly

  446. purpose

  447. when they said

  448. the Christ

  449. is David's

  450. son

  451. they meant

  452. he was nothing

  453. more

  454. than David's

  455. son

  456. and this is the idea

  457. that Jesus is challenging

  458. in verse 35

  459. he's not challenging

  460. the title

  461. he's not challenging

  462. the fact

  463. that he was indeed

  464. from the line of David

  465. he's challenging

  466. the mindset

  467. of the people

  468. that says

  469. that the Christ

  470. is nothing more

  471. than the son of David

  472. he's nothing more

  473. than an earthly king

  474. that will come

  475. and will rule

  476. on this

  477. earth

  478. he didn't deny

  479. that

  480. he was the son of David

  481. he insisted

  482. that he was more

  483. than that

  484. he insisted

  485. that he was more

  486. than just a political

  487. savior

  488. and James Edwards

  489. frames it this way

  490. and I think

  491. this is helpful

  492. Jesus invites

  493. the temple audience

  494. to reconsider

  495. whether son of David

  496. is conceptually

  497. adequate

  498. to explain

  499. the Messiah

  500. is the son of David

  501. conceptually adequate

  502. let me explain

  503. the modern equivalent

  504. to this

  505. modern equivalent

  506. is when people

  507. say

  508. Jesus

  509. is

  510. nothing more

  511. than a great

  512. teacher

  513. he is a moral

  514. example

  515. to us

  516. he is an amazing

  517. miracle

  518. worker

  519. and when we

  520. challenge

  521. that thought

  522. in our culture

  523. we're not denying

  524. that Jesus

  525. is indeed

  526. those things

  527. what we're saying

  528. is Jesus

  529. is more

  530. than just

  531. those things

  532. he is more

  533. than just

  534. a good teacher

  535. he is more

  536. than just

  537. a moral

  538. example

  539. he is more

  540. than just

  541. a miracle

  542. worker

  543. he's more

  544. than just

  545. a religious

  546. leader

  547. he's the

  548. son of God

  549. he's the

  550. savior of the

  551. world

  552. he's the

  553. lord

  554. of all that

  555. is

  556. and to

  557. estimate him

  558. as anything

  559. less than

  560. that

  561. is wrong

  562. and it

  563. misses the

  564. point

  565. altogether

  566. and that's

  567. essentially

  568. what is

  569. happening

  570. with the

  571. Jews

  572. in general

  573. and especially

  574. the scribes

  575. what Jesus

  576. is challenging

  577. is the fact

  578. that the scribes

  579. refer to the

  580. Messiah

  581. as the

  582. son of

  583. David

  584. and it's

  585. not that

  586. it isn't

  587. true

  588. it's just

  589. that it's

  590. not

  591. conceptually

  592. adequate

  593. to communicate

  594. all that

  595. the Messiah

  596. is

  597. and does

  598. so Jesus

  599. challenges

  600. their

  601. interpretation

  602. and keep

  603. in mind

  604. he's stirring

  605. up these

  606. conversations

  607. about the

  608. Christ

  609. within two

  610. days

  611. of his

  612. own

  613. crucifixion

  614. and what

  615. would be

  616. the purpose

  617. in that

  618. he's not

  619. only

  620. identifying

  621. reframing

  622. their minds

  623. about what

  624. the Christ

  625. is

  626. he's going

  627. to demonstrate

  628. what the

  629. Christ was

  630. meant to

  631. do

  632. within 48

  633. hours of

  634. this moment

  635. he's going

  636. to show

  637. them

  638. matter of

  639. interpretation

  640. number two

  641. it's a matter

  642. of inspiration

  643. a matter

  644. of

  645. inspiration

  646. look with me

  647. at verse 36

  648. now

  649. David himself

  650. in the Holy

  651. Spirit

  652. declared

  653. the Lord

  654. said to my

  655. Lord

  656. sit at my

  657. right hand

  658. until I put

  659. your enemies

  660. under your

  661. feet

  662. so to make

  663. his point

  664. Jesus

  665. quoted the

  666. first verse

  667. of Psalm

  668. 110

  669. which is

  670. quoted more

  671. than any

  672. other

  673. Psalm

  674. any

  675. other

  676. Old

  677. Testament

  678. passage

  679. for that

  680. matter

  681. in all

  682. of the

  683. New

  684. Testament

  685. now why

  686. would you

  687. think that

  688. so

  689. Jesus'

  690. argument

  691. with the

  692. scribes

  693. here

  694. is so

  695. strong

  696. that the

  697. apostles

  698. followed

  699. the Lord

  700. and they

  701. quote

  702. this Psalm

  703. or allude

  704. to this

  705. Psalm

  706. 33

  707. times

  708. in the

  709. New

  710. Testament

  711. more than

  712. any

  713. other

  714. Old

  715. Testament

  716. passage

  717. you'll

  718. find it

  719. not only

  720. in the

  721. Gospels

  722. you'll

  723. find it

  724. in Acts

  725. you'll

  726. find it

  727. in Paul's

  728. letters

  729. you'll

  730. find it

  731. in Peter's

  732. letters

  733. you'll

  734. find it

  735. in the

  736. book of

  737. Hebrews

  738. as well

  739. so let's

  740. look at it

  741. and see

  742. why it's

  743. so significant

  744. there's two

  745. things about

  746. this Psalm

  747. that Jesus

  748. and the

  749. scribes

  750. agreed

  751. about

  752. first thing

  753. is this

  754. they agreed

  755. that the

  756. Psalm

  757. was referring

  758. to the

  759. coming

  760. Messiah

  761. they agreed

  762. about that

  763. in fact

  764. why don't

  765. you just

  766. turn back

  767. there with

  768. me

  769. let's

  770. go to

  771. Psalm

  772. 110

  773. in your

  774. Bible

  775. and I'm

  776. not going

  777. to read

  778. the whole

  779. thing

  780. I'm going

  781. to leave

  782. that to

  783. you

  784. in your

  785. own time

  786. but I want

  787. you to see

  788. exactly what

  789. they're referring

  790. to here

  791. Psalm

  792. 110

  793. this

  794. this

  795. Psalm

  796. and maybe

  797. you'll

  798. maybe you'll

  799. you'll skim

  800. it as I'm

  801. even talking

  802. here for

  803. just a

  804. moment

  805. this Psalm

  806. is it

  807. it's an

  808. amazing

  809. description

  810. of

  811. Christ

  812. eternal

  813. rule

  814. as

  815. prophet

  816. priest

  817. and king

  818. and it's

  819. this very

  820. first verse

  821. that Jesus

  822. quotes

  823. look at it

  824. with me

  825. a Psalm

  826. of David

  827. the Lord

  828. says to

  829. my Lord

  830. sit at

  831. my right

  832. hand

  833. until I

  834. make your

  835. enemies

  836. your footstool

  837. now stay

  838. there in

  839. Psalm

  840. 110

  841. we're going

  842. to reference

  843. back to

  844. that particular

  845. verse and

  846. the way it

  847. looks in

  848. your Bible

  849. here in

  850. just a

  851. moment

  852. it's an

  853. amazing

  854. description

  855. of Christ

  856. eternal

  857. rule

  858. and that's

  859. something

  860. that the

  861. scribes

  862. agreed

  863. with

  864. historically

  865. this

  866. Psalm

  867. was

  868. sung

  869. as a

  870. coronation

  871. hymn

  872. when Israel

  873. would have

  874. a new

  875. king

  876. and they

  877. didn't sing

  878. that at the

  879. coronation

  880. of Israel's

  881. kings

  882. because they

  883. thought that

  884. king was

  885. the fulfillment

  886. of this

  887. Psalm

  888. that's not

  889. why they

  890. sang it

  891. they sang

  892. it because

  893. they believed

  894. that the

  895. role of

  896. king in

  897. Israel

  898. was a

  899. type of

  900. the king

  901. the great

  902. king

  903. who was

  904. to come

  905. from the

  906. line

  907. of David

  908. whose

  909. throne

  910. would be

  911. established

  912. forever

  913. based on

  914. the covenant

  915. of God

  916. all rabbinical

  917. teaching that

  918. we can find

  919. historically

  920. about Psalm

  921. 110

  922. up to the

  923. time of

  924. Jesus

  925. affirms

  926. that this

  927. is a

  928. messianic

  929. psalm

  930. it was only

  931. after the

  932. time of

  933. the apostles

  934. that the

  935. leaders in

  936. Judaism

  937. conveniently

  938. denounced

  939. it as such

  940. and decided

  941. this is no

  942. longer

  943. about this

  944. coming

  945. Messiah

  946. this has

  947. something

  948. specifically

  949. to do

  950. with David

  951. but everything

  952. going up

  953. to the

  954. time of

  955. Jesus

  956. and during

  957. the time

  958. of the

  959. apostles

  960. the Jews

  961. recognized

  962. this psalm

  963. as messianic

  964. so they're

  965. agreeing about

  966. those things

  967. okay

  968. that's important

  969. for us to

  970. understand

  971. I'll explain

  972. why in a

  973. moment

  974. number two

  975. they agreed

  976. on the

  977. doctrine of

  978. inspiration

  979. they agreed

  980. on the

  981. doctrine of

  982. inspiration

  983. back in

  984. Mark chapter

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  985. 2

  986. in verse

  987. 35

  988. Jesus

  989. says

  990. David

  991. himself

  992. says

  993. in

  994. the

  995. Holy

  996. Spirit

  997. and then

  998. he quotes

  999. the verse

  1000. or if you

  1001. like

  1002. by

  1003. the

  1004. Holy

  1005. Spirit

  1006. affirming

  1007. the fact

  1008. that

  1009. Psalm

  1010. 110

  1011. was a

  1012. work

  1013. of

  1014. inspiration

  1015. from

  1016. the

  1017. mouth

  1018. of

  1019. God

  1020. now

  1021. remember

  1022. when we

  1023. say

  1024. that

  1025. the

  1026. Holy

  1027. Spirit

  1028. inspired

  1029. David

  1030. we

  1031. don't

  1032. mean

  1033. that

  1034. he

  1035. inspired

  1036. him

  1037. in

  1038. the

  1039. same

  1040. way

  1041. that

  1042. an

  1043. artist

  1044. is

  1045. inspired

  1046. by

  1047. a

  1048. beautiful

  1049. mountainous

  1050. scene

  1051. okay

  1052. we don't

  1053. mean

  1054. that

  1055. we don't

  1056. mean

  1057. in the

  1058. same

  1059. way

  1060. that

  1061. a

  1062. child

  1063. is

  1064. inspired

  1065. by

  1066. their

  1067. teacher

  1068. to

  1069. do

  1070. something

  1071. with

  1072. their

  1073. lives

  1074. that

  1075. is

  1076. helpful

  1077. to

  1078. the

  1079. community

  1080. that's

  1081. that's

  1082. not

  1083. what

  1084. we

  1085. mean

  1086. by

  1087. inspiration

  1088. the

  1089. word

  1090. we

  1091. use

  1092. inspiration

  1093. comes

  1094. from

  1095. a

  1096. word

  1097. that

  1098. means

  1099. breathed

  1100. out

  1101. most

  1102. notably

  1103. you'll

  1104. find

  1105. this

  1106. in

  1107. one

  1108. of

  1109. Timothy's

  1110. letters

  1111. 1st

  1112. Timothy

  1113. 316

  1114. or

  1115. 2nd

  1116. Timothy

  1117. 316

  1118. Paul

  1119. says

  1120. all

  1121. scripture

  1122. is

  1123. breathed

  1124. out

  1125. all

  1126. scripture

  1127. is

  1128. by

  1129. inspiration

  1130. of

  1131. God

  1132. and

  1133. it's

  1134. profitable

  1135. and

  1136. he

  1137. goes

  1138. on

  1139. to

  1140. list

  1141. how

  1142. it's

  1143. profitable

  1144. this

  1145. is

  1146. what

  1147. we

  1148. mean

  1149. by

  1150. inspiration

  1151. it

  1152. means

  1153. that

  1154. the

  1155. words

  1156. of

  1157. the

  1158. Bible

  1159. are

  1160. literally

  1161. the

  1162. words

  1163. of

  1164. God

  1165. who

  1166. cannot

  1167. lie

  1168. Jesus

  1169. didn't

  1170. mean

  1171. that

  1172. upon

  1173. thinking

  1174. about

  1175. the

  1176. things

  1177. of

  1178. God

  1179. David

  1180. was

  1181. inspired

  1182. in

  1183. his

  1184. imagination

  1185. to

  1186. write

  1187. this

  1188. psalm

  1189. in

  1190. the

  1191. way

  1192. that

  1193. he

  1194. thought

  1195. things

  1196. might

  1197. unfold

  1198. that's

  1199. not

  1200. what

  1201. Jesus

  1202. means

  1203. he

  1204. means

  1205. that

  1206. the

  1207. Holy

  1208. Spirit

  1209. of

  1210. God

  1211. spoke

  1212. these

  1213. words

  1214. through

  1215. the

  1216. pen

  1217. of

  1218. David

  1219. so

  1220. that

  1221. David's

  1222. words

  1223. were

  1224. God's

  1225. words

  1226. that's

  1227. a

  1228. Christian

  1229. understanding

  1230. of

  1231. inspiration

  1232. okay

  1233. an

  1234. understanding

  1235. of

  1236. inspiration

  1237. that

  1238. the

  1239. scribes

  1240. that

  1241. Jesus

  1242. was

  1243. speaking

  1244. to

  1245. in

  1246. the

  1247. temple

  1248. agreed

  1249. with

  1250. they

  1251. were

  1252. in

  1253. agreement

  1254. about

  1255. that

  1256. Psalm

  1257. 110

  1258. is

  1259. messianic

  1260. it

  1261. is

  1262. also

  1263. inspired

  1264. by

  1265. God

  1266. it

  1267. is

  1268. God's

  1269. words

  1270. which

  1271. means

  1272. that

  1273. it

  1274. is

  1275. truth

  1276. so

  1277. what's

  1278. the

  1279. point

  1280. look

  1281. at the

  1282. verse

  1283. you're

  1284. there

  1285. in

  1286. Psalm

  1287. 110

  1288. look at

  1289. the

  1290. verse

  1291. we have

  1292. in

  1293. English

  1294. the word

  1295. Lord

  1296. twice

  1297. do you

  1298. notice

  1299. anything

  1300. different

  1301. about that

  1302. in your

  1303. Bible

  1304. in the

  1305. first one

  1306. most likely

  1307. in your

  1308. Bible

  1309. all four

  1310. letters

  1311. are

  1312. capitalized

  1313. in the

  1314. second one

  1315. it's not

  1316. just the

  1317. first letters

  1318. capitalized

  1319. anytime you

  1320. see all

  1321. four letters

  1322. capitalized

  1323. with Lord

  1324. it means

  1325. that the

  1326. name that

  1327. was used

  1328. in Hebrew

  1329. was Yahweh

  1330. the covenant

  1331. name of

  1332. God

  1333. that's the

  1334. high and

  1335. holy name

  1336. that's the

  1337. name that

  1338. that God

  1339. gave Moses

  1340. at the

  1341. burning bush

  1342. when when

  1343. Moses says

  1344. who should I

  1345. tell them sent

  1346. me what is

  1347. your name

  1348. and God

  1349. says I

  1350. am that

  1351. I am

  1352. I am the

  1353. self-existent

  1354. one

  1355. I am the

  1356. only God

  1357. I am

  1358. Yahweh

  1359. Jehovah

  1360. we say

  1361. sometimes

  1362. okay that's

  1363. the first

  1364. Lord

  1365. second Lord

  1366. is not

  1367. Yahweh

  1368. second Lord

  1369. is Adonai

  1370. Adonai

  1371. this word

  1372. is used

  1373. 450 times

  1374. in the

  1375. Old Testament

  1376. almost

  1377. exclusively

  1378. in relation

  1379. to God

  1380. but they

  1381. used it

  1382. to relate

  1383. to this

  1384. messianic

  1385. figure

  1386. this Lord

  1387. this

  1388. master

  1389. Adonai

  1390. with the

  1391. implication

  1392. of deity

  1393. now that's

  1394. important

  1395. in other words

  1396. under the

  1397. inspiration

  1398. of the

  1399. Holy Spirit

  1400. David wrote

  1401. that the

  1402. Messiah

  1403. was not

  1404. merely someone

  1405. who would

  1406. come after

  1407. him

  1408. but is

  1409. someone who

  1410. has

  1411. preceded

  1412. him

  1413. under the

  1414. inspiration

  1415. of the

  1416. Holy Spirit

  1417. David himself

  1418. did not

  1419. recognize the

  1420. Christ as

  1421. simply his

  1422. future

  1423. offspring

  1424. but he

  1425. acknowledged

  1426. him as

  1427. his present

  1428. Lord

  1429. and Master

  1430. and God

  1431. and to

  1432. David

  1433. this Messiah

  1434. was before

  1435. him

  1436. and was

  1437. greater

  1438. than him

  1439. and his

  1440. perspective

  1441. was not

  1442. one of

  1443. future

  1444. hope

  1445. but of

  1446. present

  1447. worship

  1448. and praise

  1449. the Lord

  1450. Yahweh

  1451. has said

  1452. to my

  1453. Lord

  1454. this messianic

  1455. figure that's

  1456. supposed to

  1457. come from

  1458. my line

  1459. David is

  1460. calling him

  1461. Lord

  1462. and Savior

  1463. and God

  1464. he does not

  1465. only come

  1466. after him

  1467. he comes

  1468. before him

  1469. in David's

  1470. words

  1471. I'm reminded

  1472. of a song

  1473. it's a newer

  1474. song by

  1475. Matt

  1476. Papa

  1477. and Matt

  1478. Boswell

  1479. called

  1480. Christ the

  1481. True and

  1482. Better

  1483. and the

  1484. last verse

  1485. refers to

  1486. this thing

  1487. Christ the

  1488. true and

  1489. better

  1490. David

  1491. lowly

  1492. shepherd

  1493. mighty

  1494. king

  1495. he the

  1496. champion

  1497. in the

  1498. battle

  1499. where

  1500. oh death

  1501. is now

  1502. thy sting

  1503. in our

  1504. place

  1505. he bled

  1506. and conquered

  1507. crown him

  1508. Lord of

  1509. majesty

  1510. he shall

  1511. be the

  1512. throne

  1513. forever

  1514. we shall

  1515. heir his

  1516. people

  1517. be

  1518. and this

  1519. is a

  1520. matter of

  1521. inspiration

  1522. because what

  1523. God says

  1524. about the

  1525. Christ

  1526. is far

  1527. more important

  1528. than what

  1529. our opinions

  1530. about the

  1531. Christ are

  1532. and that's

  1533. the purpose

  1534. of Jesus

  1535. his challenge

  1536. it doesn't

  1537. matter what

  1538. the reigning

  1539. experts think

  1540. about the

  1541. things of

  1542. God

  1543. what matters

  1544. is what

  1545. God has

  1546. revealed about

  1547. himself

  1548. in the

  1549. inerrant

  1550. infallible

  1551. inspired

  1552. word of

  1553. God

  1554. that's what

  1555. matters

  1556. and Jesus

  1557. is insisting

  1558. on that

  1559. once again

  1560. how can

  1561. the scribe

  1562. say he's

  1563. David's

  1564. son

  1565. David

  1566. himself

  1567. calls him

  1568. Lord

  1569. it's a matter

  1570. of interpretation

  1571. it's a matter

  1572. of inspiration

  1573. finally

  1574. it's a matter

  1575. of identification

  1576. identification

  1577. identification

  1578. verse 37

  1579. if you're back

  1580. and go back

  1581. to Mark

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  1582. chapter 12

  1583. now

  1584. verse 37

  1585. David himself

  1586. calls him

  1587. Lord

  1588. how is he

  1589. his son

  1590. David himself

  1591. calls him

  1592. Lord

  1593. how is he

  1594. his son

  1595. so Jesus

  1596. forces the

  1597. people

  1598. to reevaluate

  1599. their position

  1600. and he's

  1601. essentially

  1602. asking this

  1603. question

  1604. how can

  1605. the Christ

  1606. be David's

  1607. son

  1608. and

  1609. David's

  1610. Lord

  1611. how is that

  1612. even possible

  1613. again

  1614. Jesus isn't

  1615. denying the

  1616. fact

  1617. that the

  1618. Messiah

  1619. would come

  1620. from David's

  1621. lineage

  1622. remember

  1623. all of this

  1624. began with

  1625. the scribe's

  1626. answer

  1627. insisting

  1628. that the

  1629. Christ

  1630. was only

  1631. the son

  1632. of David

  1633. and Jesus

  1634. is now

  1635. using the

  1636. scripture

  1637. inspired by

  1638. God

  1639. to prove

  1640. that the

  1641. Messiah

  1642. was

  1643. indeed

  1644. both

  1645. son

  1646. of David

  1647. and his

  1648. Lord

  1649. but how

  1650. is it

  1651. possible

  1652. there's only

  1653. one way

  1654. that's

  1655. possible

  1656. this

  1657. Messiah

  1658. must be

  1659. a divine

  1660. human

  1661. being

  1662. the only

  1663. way for

  1664. the Christ

  1665. to fulfill

  1666. the scriptures

  1667. requirements

  1668. for the

  1669. Messiah

  1670. he had

  1671. to be

  1672. both

  1673. divine

  1674. and

  1675. human

  1676. he was

  1677. not only

  1678. David's

  1679. son

  1680. he was

  1681. God's

  1682. son

  1683. co-equal

  1684. co-eternal

  1685. with God

  1686. the Father

  1687. think about

  1688. the Messiah's

  1689. role for

  1690. just a

  1691. moment

  1692. the Jews

  1693. thought of

  1694. him as a

  1695. human

  1696. ruler

  1697. he was

  1698. going to

  1699. deliver the

  1700. nation

  1701. from the

  1702. oppression

  1703. of Rome

  1704. but God

  1705. doesn't need

  1706. a Messiah

  1707. to deliver

  1708. a nation

  1709. he doesn't

  1710. need a

  1711. Messiah

  1712. to do

  1713. that

  1714. think about

  1715. the Old

  1716. Testament

  1717. examples

  1718. where God

  1719. delivered the

  1720. nation of

  1721. Israel

  1722. without a

  1723. prominent

  1724. figure

  1725. think about

  1726. even coming

  1727. out of

  1728. Egypt

  1729. all Moses

  1730. was was a

  1731. spokesman

  1732. God

  1733. delivers those

  1734. people

  1735. remember in

  1736. Isaiah the

  1737. story of

  1738. Sennacherib

  1739. hundreds of

  1740. thousands of

  1741. soldiers are

  1742. camped out

  1743. near Jerusalem

  1744. and the

  1745. king of

  1746. Jerusalem

  1747. of Judah

  1748. goes and

  1749. he prays to

  1750. God and

  1751. he lays out

  1752. the letter

  1753. the criticisms

  1754. from Sennacherib

  1755. and he prays

  1756. and says Lord

  1757. the only way

  1758. that anything

  1759. happens with

  1760. this is if you

  1761. do it and

  1762. they go out

  1763. the next

  1764. morning they

  1765. find that all

  1766. the soldiers

  1767. are dead

  1768. in the middle

  1769. of the night

  1770. God kills

  1771. them

  1772. God doesn't

  1773. need a

  1774. Messiah to

  1775. deliver an

  1776. earthly nation

  1777. from another

  1778. earthly nation

  1779. but to deliver

  1780. his people from

  1781. sin and death

  1782. however

  1783. God

  1784. required a

  1785. Savior

  1786. and it

  1787. required one

  1788. who was not

  1789. only human

  1790. but divine

  1791. so the Jews

  1792. misunderstood the

  1793. Messiah's purpose

  1794. so that they

  1795. failed to

  1796. understand his

  1797. identity as

  1798. well

  1799. so Jesus

  1800. was working

  1801. it backwards

  1802. he's teaching

  1803. them about his

  1804. true identity

  1805. so that after his

  1806. death and

  1807. resurrection

  1808. they could

  1809. understand his

  1810. true purpose

  1811. because he

  1812. Jesus of

  1813. Nazareth

  1814. is this

  1815. divine human

  1816. Messiah about

  1817. which David

  1818. wrote

  1819. he perfectly

  1820. fulfilled all

  1821. of those covenant

  1822. promises and

  1823. prophecies written

  1824. in the Old

  1825. Testament and

  1826. this is the

  1827. message of the

  1828. Bible that

  1829. Jesus is the

  1830. son of David

  1831. and the son

  1832. of God

  1833. this is Mark's

  1834. purpose in

  1835. writing this

  1836. Jesus of

  1837. Nazareth the

  1838. good news is

  1839. that he is the

  1840. Messiah and

  1841. the son of

  1842. God

  1843. Jesus' purpose

  1844. in verses

  1845. 35-37 is to

  1846. say he is not

  1847. only David's

  1848. son he is

  1849. God's son which

  1850. makes only him

  1851. capable of

  1852. delivering and

  1853. bringing salvation

1854. let me give you a

  1855. few more verses

  1856. about this

  1857. remember those

  1858. genealogies we

  1859. talked about

  1860. earlier

  1861. Matthew starts

  1862. with one at the

  1863. very beginning of

  1864. the New

  1865. Testament

  1866. why

  1867. he's showing

  1868. that in this

  1869. genealogy of

  1870. David's line

  1871. it leads all

  1872. the way up to

  1873. this backwater area

  1874. in Nazareth

  1875. with Joseph and

  1876. Mary and where

  1877. Jesus is born

  1878. Jesus is in this

  1879. line that's its

  1880. purpose

  1881. then we see in

  1882. Romans chapter

  1883. one

  1884. Paul says

  1885. concerning his

  1886. son who was

  1887. descended from

  1888. David according to

  1889. the flesh and was

  1890. declared to be the

  1891. son of God in

  1892. power according to

  1893. the spirit of

  1894. holiness by his

  1895. resurrection from

  1896. the dead Jesus

  1897. Christ our Lord

  1898. you know why you

  1899. need to work hard

  1900. at bringing someone

  1901. to Easter service

  1902. Sunday resurrection

  1903. Sunday because they

  1904. need to hear that

  1905. without the

  1906. resurrection none of

  1907. this means anything

  1908. the thing that makes

  1909. us know that Jesus

  1910. is the Messiah is

  1911. the fact of his

  1912. resurrection the

  1913. thing that first

  1914. tells us and proves

  1915. to us that this

  1916. Bible is inerrant

1917. that it is true is

  1918. the fact of Jesus's

  1919. resurrection and

  1920. that's what Paul's

  1921. saying concerning his

1922. son he came from the

1923. line of David but he

  1924. was also declared to

1925. be God's son in power

  1926. through the resurrection

  1927. from the dead

  1928. Galatians chapter

  1929. four when the

  1930. fullness of time had

  1931. come God sent forth

  1932. his son born of

  1933. woman born under the

  1934. law to redeem those

  1935. who were under the

  1936. law so that we

  1937. might receive adoption

  1938. as sons Philippians

  1939. 2 is my favorite

  1940. one verse 6 though

1941. he was in the form

  1942. of God in other

1943. words he was God he

  1944. did not count equality

1945. with God a thing to

  1946. be grasped but he

  1947. emptied himself by

1948. taking on the form of

  1949. a servant being born

  1950. in the likeness of

1951. men and being found in

  1952. human form he humbled

  1953. himself became obedient

1954. to the point of death

1955. even death on a cross

  1956. therefore God has highly

  1957. exalted him and bestowed

1958. on him the name that is

1959. above every name so that

1960. the name of Jesus every

1961. knee should bow in heaven

1962. and earth and under the

  1963. earth and every tongue

  1964. confess that Jesus Christ

1965. is Lord to the glory of

1966. God the Father you know

1967. what that sounds like to

1968. me that sounds like an

  1969. eternal throne that will

1970. never be diminished in any

  1971. way that's the covenant

  1972. made to David that's

  1973. applied to Jesus of

1974. Nazareth the Son of God

1975. Hebrews 1 long ago at

1976. many times and in many

1977. ways God spoke to our

  1978. fathers by the prophets

1979. but in these last days he

1980. has spoken to us by his

  1981. son he's appointed him

1982. heir of all things through

1983. whom also he created the

1984. world he's the radiance of

1985. the glory of God the exact

1986. imprint of his nature he

1987. upholds the universe by the

1988. word of his power and after

  1989. making purification for sins

1990. that's the purpose he sat

1991. down at the right hand of the

  1992. majesty on high

  1993. second Timothy 2 remember

1994. Jesus Christ risen from the

1995. dead the offspring of David

1996. as preached in my gospel

  1997. when Jesus challenged the

1998. scribe that day in the

1999. temple he wasn't only forcing

  2000. them to reevaluate their

2001. thoughts of the Messiah he was

2002. leading them to understand that

2003. he is that promised Savior

2004. here Kent Hughes wrote this

  2005. Jesus's exchange with the

2006. scribes was a veiled self

  2007. enunciation that he himself

2008. was Messiah the divine human

  2009. fulfillment of this prophecy

2010. before the week was over he the

2011. son of David would die in

2012. fulfillment of prophecy then his

  2013. mighty resurrection would make

  2014. everything clear concerning his

2015. humanity and divinity that's the

  2016. point

2017. to view the Christ as only a

  2018. political Savior was ultimately

2019. no lasting help for the people of

  2020. Israel

  2021. there's no help if all they're

2022. doing is getting a restoration of

  2023. an earthly kingdom

  2024. their shooting and their

2025. expectations are far too small

2026. but God's intention was far

  2027. greater than that

2028. in the same way to view Jesus as

2029. anything less than Savior and Lord

2030. is no less lasting help to me and

  2031. to you

2032. this is true of Jesus this is who he is

2033. this is why he came and he demands our

2034. repentance and faith in light of that

  2035. fact

2036. look at the end of verse 37 this is

  2037. where we'll close

  2038. I know it's 1115 and you're just blew

2039. your mind that I said this is we're

2040. going to close then it

  2041. verse 37

2042. the great throng heard him gladly

2043. the great throng heard him gladly

2044. and Mark doesn't clarify what he means

  2045. by that

  2046. it could be

2047. that they received Jesus's words by

2048. faith and began to follow him as Lord

  2049. could be

2050. it could be that they were only intrigued

2051. by a fresh and exciting perspective of

2052. Psalm 110 or that they were just really

2053. happy anytime the arrogant scribes were

2054. stumped by another teacher there's

2055. probably a lot of truth in that as

  2056. well

2057. what we know from other passages is

  2058. that immediately following Jesus's

2059. resurrection the amount of people

2060. following him was relatively small

2061. but Mark calls this a great throng

2062. which indicates to me that many were

  2063. happy to hear Jesus

2064. few were willing to believe Jesus

2065. and my point with that is that it is

2066. entirely possible to sit in services like

2067. this week after week and be very happy to

2068. hear from and about Jesus without ever

  2069. actually believing in him

2070. without ever actually following him alone

  2071. for salvation

2072. it's entirely possible to be a follower of

2073. Christianity and not be a disciple of Christ

2074. so my question for you this morning as it is most Sunday

  2075. morning

2076. is not to cause you to doubt your salvation

  2077. that's not the question

2078. my question is just simply to say

2079. do you gladly hear Jesus

2080. or do you gladly receive by faith

2081. what you hear from Jesus

2082. there's a difference in those two things

2083. lots of people go to church because they're happy to hear about Jesus and

2084. they're happy to hear from him

2085. lots of crowds gathered around Jesus in the gospels

2086. for that reason they were glad to hear him

2087. they were glad to see what he could do

2088. they were glad to be witnesses of those things

2089. it was entertaining if not anything else

2090. but very few at least at this point

2091. seem to be glad to receive what he was actually saying

  2092. to receive him

  2093. to follow him

  2094. to turn from sin

  2095. to turn from Judaism

  2096. to turn from secularism

  2097. to turn from whatever

  2098. ism

  2099. you may claim

  2100. and follow Christ alone

2101. and the point of verses 35 and 30 through 37

  2102. is to say

2103. this is who Jesus is

2104. and he leaves no room for indifference to us

2105. cannot be indifferent to the person of Christ

  2106. you either follow him

  2107. or you reject him

2108. and I'm going to leave you

2109. and we'll close with this from John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  2110. these are Jesus's words

  2111. he says

2112. for God did not send his son

2113. into the world to condemn the world

2114. but in order that the world might be saved through him

  2115. whoever believes in him

  2116. is not condemned

2117. you know what I love about that

2118. that on your worst day

  2119. if you're in Christ

  2120. you're still in Christ

  2121. on your worst day

2122. on the days when you're really struggling

2123. with that besetting sin perhaps

2124. that the book of Hebrews talks about

2125. or the thing and you're just

2126. you're feeling all the shame

2127. that comes from falling again

  2128. and again and again

2129. if you are in Christ

2130. you are still in Christ

  2131. you are not condemned

  2132. and he says

2133. go and sin no more

2134. but you are safe in him

  2135. I love that

2136. but the verse isn't in there

  2137. whoever believes in him

  2138. is not condemned

  2139. but

  2140. whoever does not believe

  2141. is condemned already

2142. because he has not believed

  2143. in the name

  2144. of the only

  2145. son of God

  2146. and that's the tragedy

  2147. of those

  2148. who sit

  2149. Sunday after Sunday

  2150. in church services

  2151. like ours

  2152. and are glad

  2153. to hear

  2154. Jesus

  2155. glad to hear

  2156. about Jesus

  2157. but never truly

  2158. follow him

  2159. they're not

  2160. disciples

  2161. of him

  2162. they're not glad

  2163. to receive

  2164. what he has said

  2165. by faith

  2166. and those people

  2167. are condemned

  2168. already

  2169. in this moment

  2170. they stand condemned

  2171. and the only hope

2172. that any of us have

  2173. is the wonderful grace

  2174. of Jesus

  2175. asNINGNING

  2176. as
