  1. Well, as I'm sure you can tell, the passage that I just read is set within the context

  2. of Israel's annual feast of Passover and Unleavened Bread.

  3. The Passover, which kicked off the week of Unleavened Bread, was and still is the highlight

  4. of the Jewish liturgical calendar.

  5. And if you're unfamiliar with it, you may be helped to know that the Passover meal is

  6. a really beautiful, rich commemoration of the Exodus when God delivered and redeemed

  7. his people from bondage as slaves in Egypt.

  8. In that Exodus, God established the feast of Passover as a means for them to remember his

  9. grace and his mercy towards them, and he commanded that they continually observe that throughout

  10. their generations.

  11. In fact, Exodus chapter 12 and verse 14 says this,

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  12. This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout

  13. your generations as a statute forever.

  14. You shall keep it as a feast.

  15. And God went through and explained to them exactly how they were to keep this feast and what they

  16. were to do, even what they were to wear, and the times that they were to observe the meal

  17. itself.

  18. And the Passover meal had especially in view the final plague from God against Egypt.

  19. If you'll remember, in this tenth and final plague, God, through Moses, told Pharaoh and then also

  20. the children of Israel that the angel of death was going to pass through in the night, and he

  21. would kill every firstborn of every household.

  22. But in that judgment, God provided a way of escape.

  23. For any house that had, as God had instructed, sacrificed a lamb, spotless, one year of age, and taken the

  24. blood of that lamb and spread it on the doorpost and on the lintel of the house, any sign of that

  25. blood on the house, God would pass over that house.

  26. And we see in that a picture of our own judgment and redemption.

  27. All of us are destined for judgment because of our sin and our bondage to sin, yet God gives us a

  28. way of escape from his very own judgment against said sin.

  29. And that's really the point of the passage that we study today.

  30. Here's what Exodus 12 and verse 13 says.

  31. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses wherever you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

  32. Hence the name Passover.

  33. So families rehearsed this story yearly as they gathered together, typically as family units.

  34. They would gather and they would observe this feast.

  35. They would remember God's redemption that he had provided for them.

  36. And this celebration is actually the reason that Jesus and his 12 disciples are in Jerusalem at this particular moment in Mark's gospel.

  37. They have gone there to observe the feast of Passover, and of course, Jesus understanding that this will be the moment of his crucifixion.

  38. The Passover is not merely the context referring to the background of these verses.

  39. The Passover is actually the very focus of these verses.

  40. In fact, Mark goes out of his way here in this passage to ensure we understand that this final section of his gospel is inextricably linked to the Passover and its significance and its meaning.

  41. Just in the first three or four verses, just in the first three or four verses, he says Passover by name four different times.

  42. He goes out of his way to do that.

  43. He wants us to see this is not only in the time frame of Jesus' life, the Passover feast, but what Jesus is about to accomplish is in relation to the significance and meaning of the Passover feast.

  44. You see, there's an anticipatory element in this meal, in this celebration.

  45. As the people remembered the first exodus from Exodus 12, they also looked ahead with anticipation, with longing for a new exodus.

  46. In their minds, this exodus would be from bondage to Rome.

  47. And as they reflected on the prophets in the Old Testament, they set that within their immediate context.

  48. And they longed for this exodus from Rome, from this freedom from bondage, and that God would then reestablish the kingdom of Israel for them.

  49. So every year as they gather for this Passover meal, they're not only looking back, they're looking forward.

  50. And their anticipation is right, but their understanding of it was wrong.

  51. The Passover from Exodus 12 does point forward to a greater Passover, but it's a spiritual Passover.

  52. When God would deliver his people in Christ from sin, not from Rome.

  53. That's the entire purpose of God sending his son Jesus to us.

  54. The entire reason that he's here.

  55. The entire reason that he came.

  56. The entire reason he was sent by God was so that he would be our perfect, once for all, Passover lamb.

  57. John the Baptist picked up on this early.

  58. You'll remember in John chapter 1, as Jesus walks through Galilee, John sees them and he lifts up his voice.

    John 1 chapter mention

  59. And it says, the next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and he said, behold, the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  60. So from the very early days of Jesus' ministry, the forerunner of Jesus, John the Baptist, has already lifted up his voice and assigned to him this title, this description, lamb.

  61. Not just any lamb.

  62. The lamb.

  63. The lamb that has come from God, therefore, is the perfect, spotless lamb.

  64. And by being that lamb, he has come to take away the sins of the world.

  65. And of course, Mark understood that Jesus' crucifixion was how he fulfilled the Passover and John the Baptist's proclamation.

  66. And as we walk through these verses together this morning, I want you to see that Jesus is indeed the lamb of God, slain for the redemption of sinners like you and me.

  67. And not only is that the reality of who Jesus is and what he has done, but in this Passover meal, in this specific Passover meal,

  68. we see Jesus extending the invitation for you to come and receive this freedom and forgiveness that is found in him.

  69. And I think three headings will help guide our thoughts.

  70. One, preparing the Passover.

  71. Two, fulfilling the Passover.

  72. And then finally, transforming the Passover.

  73. Okay, let's first look at preparing for Passover.

  74. Verse 12,

  75. Remember, Jesus and the disciples are staying about two miles outside of the city in a town called Bethany.

  76. But the Passover meal was to be observed within the city walls of Jerusalem.

  77. This meant that there was a measure of planning and preparation that was required ahead of the meal.

  78. And keen to start such preparations, the disciples asked the Lord what he would have them to do.

  79. The first day of unleavened bread here in this verse refers to the time designated for the Passover celebration specifically.

  80. And the phrase, when they sacrifice the Passover lamb, is speaking of Thursday afternoon.

  81. Remember, Jews reckoned their days from sundown to sundown.

  82. So typically what would happen is the lambs for the Passover meal would be sacrificed in the temple on Thursday afternoon,

  83. or at least the way it would have unfolded in this particular week with the days.

  84. Thursday afternoon, Thursday afternoon, at sundown on Thursday afternoon, the Jews would have viewed that as the beginning of Friday.

  85. And so they would observe the meal itself between sundown on Thursday evening until midnight.

  86. God had said, don't let it extend beyond midnight.

  87. Those were the regulations that they had to follow.

  88. And so you'll see some of the timing is being expressed by Mark here in this verse.

  89. Now the fact that the disciples asked for Jesus' wishes regarding where they would have the meal

  90. suggests that Jesus would be the one presiding over the celebration itself.

  91. The way this would typically work with families is as these family units would gather together,

  92. typically as this is fitting for today being Father's Day,

  93. it was the father of the family, the patriarch of the family,

  94. would be responsible for presiding over it,

  95. which meant he was responsible for making sure the meal is prepared appropriately,

  96. that all the elements are there, that a place to have the meal is provided.

  97. As the meal and the celebration is carried on,

  98. it would be his responsibility to explain the significance of it,

  99. to tell the story of the Exodus.

  100. He would oversee all of these things and all of the blessings and all the prayers.

  101. It was reserved for the head of household.

  102. Well, the fact that the disciples have come to Jesus,

  103. asking for the details of what they need to do,

  104. suggests that he is the one presiding over it.

  105. He would have held that honored position.

  106. He would be the one teaching the significance of the Passover

  107. on that particular evening with his disciples.

  108. Now this isn't surprising to us.

  109. We would expect it to be this way.

  110. But it is an important note as we move forward in the text.

  111. While the disciples that Jesus sends is preparing for the traditional Passover,

  112. what Jesus has done and is doing is preparing them for this final Passover.

  113. And as we continue in these verses,

  114. I want you to notice the control that Jesus has over every element of the evening.

  115. He has arranged it.

  116. He has provided it.

  117. He has set it up in order to teach this vital lesson to these men.

  118. Verse 13,

  119. He sent two of his disciples and said to them,

  120. Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.

  121. Follow him, and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house,

  122. The teacher says, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?

  123. He will show you a large upper room furnished and ready.

  124. There prepare for us.

  125. And the disciples set out, went to the city, and found it just as he had told them,

  126. And they prepared the Passover.

  127. So at some point in the week, Jesus had prearranged all of the details regarding where they would observe the meal.

  128. But he moved to it with tremendous secrecy.

  129. He only sends two of his disciples.

  130. Luke says it was Peter and John who were designated to do it,

  131. And they went into the city to prepare, but he didn't tell them where to go.

  132. Instead, he told them to watch for a specific signal.

  133. The signal would be a man carrying a jar of water on his head,

  134. which in that culture was unusual.

  135. It would be like a man in our culture carrying a purse.

  136. It was the women and the slaves that would carry the jars of water.

  137. The men would be responsible for carrying the wine skins, but not the water jars.

  138. So as they go into the city, the crowded city,

  139. Remember, all of these people have gathered in that specific place to observe the Passover.

  140. This man with the water jar would have stuck out to the men.

  141. They would have known, go to him, inquire of him where we are to go.

  142. And that's exactly what happened.

  143. He stands out among the vast crowds.

  144. He led them to the place where Jesus had made arrangements.

  145. And once they were there, Peter and John found a large upper room

  146. with everything that they needed to prepare the meal,

  147. just as Jesus had said.

  148. He had arranged it.

  149. He was in control.

  150. But the question here is,

  151. Why were Jesus and his disciples acting with such secrecy?

  152. Why such stealth movements in this moment?

  153. Why is he not wanting to be recognized as they move into the city?

  154. Well, look back to verse number one.

  155. We read last week.

  156. It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread,

  157. and the chief priest and the scribes were what?

  158. Seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him.

  159. So things have intensified.

  160. It's no secret to Jesus that they've been trying to kill him.

  161. They've been trying to do that for years now.

  162. But now things have really intensified in Jerusalem.

  163. In fact, it is John 11, 57 that says,

  164. Now the chief priest and the Pharisees had given orders

  165. that if anyone knew where he was,

  166. he should let them know so that they might arrest him.

  167. Why is he moving in secrecy?

  168. Because they're trying to kill him.

  169. And they've told everybody in the city,

  170. If you see where Jesus is,

  171. it's your responsibility to tell us

  172. so that we can do what we want to do with him.

  173. He was moving in the same kind of secrecy.

  174. You and I would move in in this moment.

  175. But some skeptics have looked at this,

  176. and they have argued that Jesus was acting in fear,

  177. aware of the plot against him,

  178. and afraid to face death.

  179. The same skeptics have argued that

  180. Jesus was not the Son of God.

  181. He was not the Messiah.

  182. He was a towering religious figure to be sure,

  183. but he was the unfortunate victim

  184. of his own fanaticism, they would say.

  185. And they would point to this passage

  186. and say that Jesus was just caught up in all of this,

  187. and this is proof why he's moving in secrecy.

  188. Therefore, he's afraid of what might happen to him.

  189. But Jesus wasn't acting in fear at all.

  190. His testimony in the Gospels, again and again,

  191. proved that he was intentionally moving towards the cross,

  192. not away from it.

  193. He knew what lie ahead.

  194. He knew what awaited him in Jerusalem,

  195. and he was intentionally moving towards it.

  196. And with wisdom, Jesus moved in secrecy,

  197. not to avoid the cross,

  198. but to face it at precisely the right time.

  199. This was the most important Passover in all of history.

  200. And according to Luke's account,

  201. Jesus was even longingly awaiting it

  202. so that he could teach his disciples

  203. the significance of Passover

  204. in regards to what would happen to him on the cross.

  205. Luke says this.

  206. He said to them,

  207. I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you

  208. before I suffer.

  209. Jesus isn't afraid to die.

  210. He's not trying to avoid the cross.

  211. He's actually working within the will of the Father.

  212. And this meal was the final step

  213. on the road to the cross.

  214. Now before we move on,

  215. let's take a step back for just a second

  216. and look at the big picture

  217. of what's happening in Jerusalem.

  218. All the preparations across the city are unfolding.

  219. Thousands of people have gone to the temple that afternoon

  220. to sacrifice their lambs.

  221. They've made their way.

  222. They've made their preparations.

  223. As Kent Hughes said,

  224. the whole city was redolent

  225. with the inviting aroma of roasted lamb.

  226. Yet they had no idea

  227. that a greater spiritual exodus

  228. was about to take place

  229. as the perfect sinless lamb of God was slain.

  230. Think about that.

  231. Jesus is in the midst of the city.

  232. Everyone around him

  233. is observing and reflecting on the redemption of God.

  234. And here is Jesus among them.

  235. And they have no idea

  236. that he is the redemption of God.

  237. But he's preparing his disciples for it.

  238. Number two, fulfilling the Passover.

  239. Fulfilling the Passover.

  240. In the first section,

  241. we find Jesus preparing his disciples for Passover.

  242. In this section,

  243. he explains that his current circumstance

  244. is what is fulfilling

  245. what the Passover typified.

  246. Look at verse 17.

  247. When it was evening,

  248. he came with the 12,

  249. and as they were reclining at table and eating,

  250. Jesus said,

  251. truly I say to you,

  252. one of you will betray me,

  253. one who is eating with me.

  254. And they began to be sorrowful.

  255. And to say to him one after another,

  256. is it I?

  257. Is it I?

  258. We have a small glimpse

  259. into the insecurities

  260. of the disciples here, don't we?

  261. We typically look at them

  262. because of the mistakes

  263. that they made regarding their pride.

  264. But here,

  265. Jesus says,

  266. one of you will betray me.

  267. And each one does not say,

  268. is it him?

  269. No, they ask,

  270. is it I?

  271. They understood,

  272. I think at this point,

  273. the nature of their own hearts,

  274. their own ability to sin,

  275. their own ability to fail miserably.

  276. At the appropriate time that evening,

  277. we're told in verse 17,

  278. when most people probably had resorted

  279. to their respective feast,

  280. Jesus and the other disciples

  281. arrive in the upper room.

  282. And the Passover celebration began

  283. in each home sometime after sunset,

  284. as I said,

  285. it would conclude by midnight.

  286. And there was an extensive liturgy

  287. that Jesus would have followed

  288. in presiding over this meal.

  289. Mark skips all of that

  290. and he compresses it down

  291. so that what we see Jesus saying

  292. in these verses

  293. is probably a few hours

  294. into the meal itself.

  295. And at that point in the celebration,

  296. Jesus drops a bomb on the room

  297. by revealing one of them

  298. will betray him.

  299. And in exposing this betrayal,

  300. Jesus quotes Psalm 41,

  301. declaring that the betrayal itself

  302. was actually the fulfillment of Scripture.

  303. John is the one that tells us this.

  304. John chapter 13 and verse 18,

    John 13 chapter mention

  305. Jesus says,

  306. but the Scripture will be fulfilled.

  307. And then he quotes Psalm 41, 9.

  308. He who ate my bread

  309. has lifted his heel against me.

  310. So we see here,

  311. God has not only predetermined

  312. the crucifixion of Jesus,

  313. but he has ordained the very means

  314. by which he would go to the cross.

  315. And it's another reminder

  316. that though Jesus was betrayed

  317. and murdered by the hands of men,

  318. it was God the Father

  319. who delivered him up

  320. to be the substitute for sinners.

  321. Do you remember Peter's sermon

  322. in Acts 2 over Easter?

  323. This Jesus delivered up

  324. according to the definite plan

  325. and foreknowledge of God,

  326. you crucified and killed

  327. by the hands of lawless men.

  328. Do you see what Mark is expressing here?

  329. What Jesus is even teaching his disciples

  330. that what is about to happen

  331. is not unknown to me,

  332. neither is it unknown to the Father,

  333. neither is it beyond our control.

  334. This is actually the plan.

  335. And everything that's unfolding,

  336. though it's sorrowful in my betrayal,

  337. I am going as it has been written

  338. of me to go.

  339. And as you might expect,

  340. a heavy, sorrowful spirit

  341. immediately descends on the room

  342. and the disciples begin to inquire

  343. about the betrayer.

  344. Verse 20,

  345. Jesus narrows it just a bit.

  346. He said to them,

  347. it is one of the twelve,

  348. one who is dipping bread

  349. into the dish with me.

  350. So it seems here that there was

  351. more than just the disciples

  352. in the room.

  353. Perhaps the friends from Bethany

  354. had come along with them.

  355. And perhaps it was necessary

  356. that in the room,

  357. in the midst of the inquiry,

  358. Jesus narrows down

  359. from the larger group of disciples

  360. to the immediate apostles

  361. that he had chosen,

  362. the twelve.

  363. He says it will be one of the twelve.

  364. Meaning that it would not be someone

  365. who was on the fringes of his group,

  366. but he would actually be betrayed

  367. by someone closest to him.

  368. Not as someone whom he barely knew,

  369. at least in his relationship,

  370. earthly relationship with him,

  371. but someone who was a close friend

  372. and companion to him.

  373. And of course,

  374. Jesus knew all along

  375. that Judas would betray him.

  376. And yet it never stopped him

  377. from expressing his love

  378. and his kindness

  379. and his friendship

  380. to Judas.

  381. What a compassionate Lord.

  382. What a gracious God.

  383. To know what awaits him

  384. and to even know

  385. who would be responsible

  386. for it taking place.

  387. And yet all along the way,

  388. Jesus stillers the same kindness

  389. to Judas.

  390. He shows the same love to Judas.

  391. He shows the same miracles to Judas.

  392. He teaches the same truths to Judas.

  393. What is this a sign of,

  394. if not anything,

  395. but the compassionate grace of God?

  396. But then again,

  397. the question is,

  398. why didn't he expose Judas

  399. in this moment?

  400. Why not just say,

  401. and it's Judas?

  402. I mean,

  403. surely he could have at least

  404. prevented Judas

  405. from coming along

  406. or knowing where it was

  407. that he was gonna be

  408. on that night.

  409. As Kent Hughes said,

  410. it would only take a nod

  411. toward Judas's direction

  412. and Peter would have had him

  413. in a headlock in a moment.

  414. Jesus doesn't do that.

  415. Why?

  416. The answer's in the next verse.

  417. Verse 21.

  418. For the Son of Man goes

  419. as it is written of him.

  420. This was a part of God's plan.

  421. Jesus wasn't gonna get in the way

  422. of the Father's plan.

  423. You know,

  424. if God allowed us

  425. to see our future,

  426. you know what we would do?

  427. We would fight relentlessly

  428. against everything

  429. that we didn't like

  430. about what he shows us.

  431. And we would work hard

  432. to make better

  433. all the things

  434. that we did like

  435. in what he shows us.

  436. That's what we would do.

  437. Not so with Jesus.

  438. He was always aware

  439. of what would unfold

  440. with Judas.

  441. Still,

  442. he was utterly committed

  443. to obeying the will

  444. of the Father,

  445. which he knew

  446. to be found

  447. in the pages

  448. of Scripture.

  449. Isn't that what he says?

  450. The Son of Man goes,

  451. I am going

  452. as the Father

  453. has said for me

  454. to go

  455. in his word

  456. as it is written.

  457. But again,

  458. that doesn't mean

  459. Jesus is an unwilling

  460. participant

  461. in procuring

  462. our redemption.

  463. He pursues

  464. the Father's plan

  465. willfully

  466. and joyfully.

  467. Remember John 17.

  468. For this reason,

  469. the Father loves me

  470. because I lay down

  471. my life

  472. that I may

  473. take it up again.

  474. No one takes it

  475. from me,

  476. Jesus says,

  477. but I lay it down

  478. of my own accord.

  479. He's willing

  480. to do this.

  481. I have authority

  482. to lay it down.

  483. I have authority

  484. to take it up again.

  485. This charge

  486. I have received

  487. from my Father.

  488. And then the writer

  489. of Hebrews

  490. tells us

  491. in chapter 12

  492. and verse 2

  493. that it was

  494. for the joy

  495. that was before him

  496. that he endured

  497. the cross.

  498. Do you see?

  499. He's not an unwilling

  500. participant.

  501. He is obedient.

  502. He is willing.

  503. He is joyful.

  504. It is his desire

  505. to provide

  506. this redemption.

  507. So we see

  508. Jesus

  509. does not only

  510. act in obedience

  511. to the Father's will,

  512. but he acts

  513. in unity

  514. with the Father's will.

  515. Do you see

  516. the difference here?

  517. We can act

  518. in obedience

  519. without acting

  520. in unity.

  521. My kids do it

  522. all the time.

  523. Right?

  524. Right, Ashlyn?

  525. Say, Ashlyn,

  526. it's time

  527. to go to bed.

  528. Oh,

  529. just a little

  530. while longer.

  531. Eventually,

  532. she makes

  533. her way there.

  534. she acts

  535. in obedience

  536. to my will.

  537. Not necessarily

  538. in unity with it.

  539. Not Jesus.

  540. He acts

  541. in obedience.

  542. He acts

  543. in unity

  544. with the Father.

  545. Perfect unity

  546. among the Trinity.

  547. With joy,

  548. he procures

  549. our redemption.

  550. Sinclair Ferguson

  551. says,

  552. Jesus is completely

  553. submitted

  554. to his Father's will.

  555. That will

  556. has been revealed

  557. in the Scripture,

  558. and he bows

  559. to it.

  560. Because his life

  561. is governed

  562. by the teaching

  563. of Scripture,

  564. his death

  565. will be neither

  566. an accident

  567. nor a tragedy.

  568. But notice,

  569. Jesus did not

  570. believe the Scripture

  571. in merely hypothetical

  572. or theoretical ways.

  573. He believed it

  574. and obeyed it

  575. without compromise.

  576. Now,

  577. set this thought

  578. within the context

  579. of Mark's teaching

  580. on true discipleship.

  581. what does it mean

  582. to be a faithful

  583. follower of Jesus?

  584. It means to act

  585. as he acts,

  586. to go where he goes,

  587. to think as he thinks,

  588. to be faithful

  589. in following him.

  590. And how did Jesus

  591. lay out the plan

  592. for following him?

  593. By being obedient

  594. to the Father

  595. through the Word of God.

  596. Faithful discipleship

  597. begins with a commitment

  598. to the very Word of God,

  599. to the Scriptures.

  600. verse 21 again,

  601. Jesus closes,

  602. but woe to that man

  603. by whom the Son of Man

  604. is betrayed.

  605. It would have been better

  606. for that man

  607. if he had never been born.

  608. There's a lot

  609. we could say here.

  610. It's probably best

  611. that I mention

  612. just a couple of things

  613. and move on

  614. and leave it to you

  615. to dig in a little further.

  616. But here's the main point.

  617. just because this path

  618. was the will of God

  619. didn't mean Judas

  620. wasn't responsible

  621. for his own sin.

  622. Now there's mystery

  623. in this, isn't there?

  624. But this verse

  625. makes it clear

  626. that God's sovereignty

  627. over us

  628. neither violates

  629. our human freedom

  630. nor does it absolve us

  631. of guilt.

  632. Judas' sin

  633. was as much his own

  634. as Jesus' righteousness

  635. was his own.

  636. It's a reminder

  637. that

  638. no person

  639. will ever stand

  640. before God

  641. and rightfully claim

  642. that they are innocent

  643. or undeserving

  644. of his judgment.

  645. we cannot look

  646. to the sovereignty

  647. of God

  648. and say

  649. I am what I am

  650. because of you.

  651. This is your fault

  652. and judgment

  653. against me

  654. is unfair

  655. or undeserving.

  656. Paul confronts

  657. that particularly

  658. that particular

  659. objection

  660. in Romans chapter 9.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  661. It's not always

  662. easy to understand

  663. how is it possible

  664. that God

  665. could be

  666. so sovereign

  667. over the events

  668. of Judas' life

  669. and yet still

  670. hold Judas

  671. accountable

  672. and I can't connect

  673. all of those dots

  674. in a way

  675. that would be

  676. satisfactory to you today

  677. but what I know

  678. is it's what the Bible

  679. teaches

  680. that God is both

  681. sovereign over us

  682. and yet we are

  683. still responsible

  684. and culpable

  685. for our

  686. sin.

  687. So don't think

  688. that you'll ever

  689. be able to stand

  690. before God

  691. and claim any kind

  692. of innocence.

  693. You will stand

  694. in judgment

  695. and our only hope

  696. in that way

  697. is God's grace

  698. through his son

  699. Jesus Christ.

  700. Okay so we see

  701. the preparations

  702. for the Passover

  703. we see the fulfillment

  704. of the Passover

  705. finally

  706. we see the transforming

  707. of the Passover

  708. transforming it.

  709. Some of you

  710. have experienced

  711. a very high church

  712. form of worship

  713. and your experience

  714. in church

  715. you know what I mean

  716. by that.

  717. I don't mean by high church

  718. I don't mean that

  719. in a pejorative way

  720. I mean it as just

  721. in the structure

  722. it's very formal

  723. it's very structured

  724. perhaps the mood

  725. is a bit more solemn.

  726. You've experienced

  727. that before.

  728. Others of you

  729. have experienced

  730. a very low church

  731. form of worship

  732. where basically

  733. anything goes

  734. at any time.

  735. I can remember

  736. Andy and I

  737. have talked about

  738. this before

  739. I can remember

  740. going to visit

  741. my grandparents church

  742. in West Virginia

  743. as a kid

  744. and it was

  745. they had a very low

  746. church form of worship

  747. where they would

  748. start the service

  749. by saying

  750. anybody have a song

  751. to sing

  752. or who wants to come

  753. and do the thing today

  754. there's not really

  755. any structure to it

  756. you just kind of

  757. went about it

  758. and did it as

  759. you wanted to do it.

  760. If we're not careful

  761. we'll think of the

  762. Passover meal that way

  763. that they just kind of

  764. got together

  765. and whenever the food

  766. was ready

  767. they indulged

  768. and somebody said

  769. a blessing

  770. and they just went

  771. through it

  772. and they did the thing.

  773. But that's not

  774. actually how it was

  775. there was actually

  776. a very specific liturgy

  777. that they followed

  778. and the Passover celebration

  779. had very specific

  780. things to go through

  781. very specific moments

  782. and actions

  783. and foods

  784. and descriptions

  785. and prayers

  786. and blessings

  787. and Jesus would have

  788. followed this structure

  789. as he was presiding

  790. over the meal.

  791. and what we see

  792. Jesus doing

  793. in these verses

  794. is transforming

  795. the meaning

  796. of the Passover

  797. and instituting

  798. what we know

  799. and call

  800. the Lord's Supper

  801. and understandably

  802. the four gospel authors

  803. compress this event

  804. into the moments

  805. when Jesus

  806. instituted

  807. this ordinance

  808. but what I'd like

  809. to do

  810. as we finish today

  811. is work through

  812. these verses

  813. in the context

  814. of the Passover

  815. liturgy.

  816. I think it would

  817. actually be really

  818. helpful for us

  819. to understand

  820. at what points

  821. Jesus interjects

  822. these thoughts

  823. and at what

  824. significance

  825. they hold

  826. regarding

  827. the Passover.

  828. Now

  829. before you think

  830. that I'm just

  831. super smart

  832. and figured all

  833. this stuff out

  834. what I'm about

  835. to give you

  836. is the reconstruction

  837. of this liturgy

  838. done by William Lane

  839. who is a commentator

  840. and he has written

  841. a fantastic

  842. exegetical commentary

  843. on Mark's gospel

  844. but he's looked

  845. at the ancient documents

  846. to reconstruct

  847. how this would

  848. have been.

  849. So this is coming

  850. for him.

  851. I think it will

  852. be helpful to you.

  853. Here's how it starts.

  854. The blessing of the meal

  855. and the blessing

  856. of the first cup.

  857. So just like we would do

  858. they open up

  859. with a word of prayer

  860. and a blessing

  861. and they move forward

  862. and then comes

  863. the first cup of wine.

  864. There's actually

  865. four different cups

  866. of wine served

  867. in the Passover meal.

  868. Each has a link

  869. to a promise

  870. from God

  871. in Exodus 6.

  872. The first cup

  873. I will bring you out.

  874. The second cup

  875. I will deliver you.

  876. The third cup

  877. of redemption

  878. I will redeem you

  879. and the fourth cup

  880. of consummation

  881. is I will take you.

  882. I will take you

  883. to be with me.

  884. And so as they would

  885. observe this meal

  886. and they would drink

  887. each cup of wine

  888. this would have

  889. a description

  890. and it would have

  891. a significant meaning

  892. attached to it

  893. as they would go through.

  894. So they would have

  895. the first cup of wine.

  896. After they have

  897. the first cup

  898. the food is brought out

  899. and it's displayed

  900. on the table

  901. before them.

  902. It's arranged

  903. a very specific way

  904. and then the youngest

  905. son in the room

  906. or perhaps the youngest

  907. person in the room

  908. would ask a question.

  909. It's the same question

  910. every year.

  911. Why is this night

  912. different from other nights?

  913. Why is this dinner

  914. different from other dinners?

  915. Jesus and then the father

  916. or the leader

  917. this case being Jesus

  918. would recall and tell

  919. the story of the exodus

  920. and he would explain

  921. God's redemption

  922. of his people.

  923. Now I want you to pause

  924. and consider the significance

  925. of this for a moment.

  926. Can you imagine

  927. you're in the room

  928. Jesus the son of God

  929. is presiding over the meal

  930. and he is the one

  931. explaining God's redemption.

  932. No one in the history

  933. of Passover liturgy

  934. would have ever said it

  935. with the same passion

  936. and ability

  937. and truth

  938. with which Jesus

  939. communicated these thoughts

  940. on that night.

  941. and you can just imagine

  942. knowing what his intention

  943. is in teaching

  944. that as Jesus explains this

  945. he does not quickly

  946. and lightly skip over

  947. the important details

  948. of the exodus.

  949. No.

  950. He explains them

  951. with significance

  952. and with truth

  953. and perhaps the way

  954. that those people

  955. in Galilee

  956. lifted up their voices

  957. and said

  958. who has ever taught us

  959. like this?

  960. Who has ever taught

  961. with such authority?

  962. Perhaps the disciples

  963. on this night

  964. are experiencing

  965. that emotion

  966. once again

  967. as they listen

  968. to Jesus

  969. talk about redemption

  970. what authority

  971. what truth

  972. they are receiving

  973. in this moment.

  974. And then they would

  975. sing together

  976. Psalms 113

  977. through Psalm 115

  978. and that part

  979. of the service

  980. would include

  981. with the second cup

  982. of wine.

  983. Now after they finished

  984. the second cup

  985. there was an interpretation

  986. of the detailed elements

  987. of the meal.

  988. So at this point

  989. all the food is displayed

  990. Jesus would have gone

  991. one by one

  992. to each element

  993. of the foods

  994. and you can find

  995. all the descriptions

  996. about what those foods were

  997. and he would have

  998. explained the significance

  999. of that food

1000. why they were eating it

1001. as a part of the Passover

  1002. and why it mattered

  1003. to the Passover story.

1004. Now I want you to notice

1005. what Jesus would have done

  1006. with the bread.

  1007. There's a platter of bread

  1008. on the table.

  1009. He hasn't broken it

  1010. and distributed it yet.

  1011. Okay.

1012. We haven't got there yet.

  1013. Jesus picks up

  1014. the platter

  1015. and this was

  1016. the customary blessing.

  1017. Here's what he says.

  1018. This is the bread

  1019. of affliction

  1020. which our fathers ate

1021. in the land of Egypt.

  1022. Let everyone

  1023. who hungers

  1024. come and eat.

  1025. Let everyone

  1026. who is needy

  1027. come and eat

  1028. the Passover meal.

1029. Now I need to keep

  1030. that in mind.

  1031. Jesus lifts the bread.

  1032. Let everyone

  1033. who is hungry

1034. come and eat this bread.

  1035. Let everyone

  1036. who is needy

  1037. come and eat

  1038. this meal

  1039. and enjoy

  1040. and partake

  1041. in this Passover moment.

  1042. And then comes

  1043. another blessing.

  1044. Praised be thou

  1045. O Lord

  1046. sovereign of the world

  1047. who causes bread

  1048. to come forth

  1049. from the earth.

  1050. In other words

  1051. God the Father

  1052. is the provider

  1053. of the bread

  1054. that Jesus

  1055. is then inviting

  1056. people to come

  1057. and to eat

  1058. if they're hungry

  1059. and to eat

  1060. if they are needy.

  1061. And then as

  1062. the liturgy continues

  1063. the leader

  1064. or the Father

  1065. would have taken

  1066. a single piece

  1067. of that bread

  1068. unleavened

  1069. and he would have

  1070. begun to break

  1071. off pieces of it

  1072. and they would

  1073. pass it along

  1074. to whoever

  1075. is in the room

  1076. and this would be

  1077. done in silence.

  1078. This is a reflective

  1079. moment.

  1080. This is where

  1081. Jesus interjects

  1082. and he breaks

  1083. the silence.

  1084. Verse 22

  1085. As they were eating

  1086. he took the bread

  1087. and after blessing it

  1088. he's just done

  1089. these blessings

  1090. I said

  1091. he breaks it

  1092. and he gives it

  1093. to them

  1094. and then he speaks

  1095. in the silence

  1096. and he says

  1097. take

  1098. this is my body

  1099. this is my body

  1100. literally

  1101. this is me

  1102. this is me

  1103. I am giving

  1104. to you

  1105. in this moment.

  1106. Thereby

  1107. Jesus takes

  1108. the significant

  1109. meaning of this bread

  1110. to the Passover

  1111. with its invitations

  1112. and its blessings

  1113. and he transforms

  1114. its meaning

  1115. in order to say

  1116. I am this bread

  1117. it's me

  1118. take

  1119. me

  1120. can't remind you

  1121. of what Jesus

1122. said in John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  1123. truly truly

  1124. I say to you

  1125. it was not

  1126. Moses who gave you

  1127. bread from heaven

  1128. but my father

  1129. gives you

  1130. the true bread

  1131. from heaven

  1132. for the bread

  1133. of God

  1134. is he

  1135. who comes

  1136. down from heaven

  1137. and gives life

  1138. to the world

  1139. and they said

  1140. to him

  1141. sir

  1142. give us

  1143. this bread

  1144. always

  1145. and Jesus

  1146. said to them

  1147. I am

  1148. the bread

  1149. of life

  1150. whoever

  1151. comes to me

  1152. shall not

  1153. hunger

  1154. whoever

  1155. believes in me

  1156. shall not

  1157. thirst

  1158. and he goes

  1159. on to say

  1160. truly I say

  1161. to you

  1162. whoever believes

  1163. has eternal

  1164. life

  1165. I

  1166. am the bread

  1167. of life

  1168. your fathers

  1169. ate manna

  1170. in the wilderness

  1171. and they died

  1172. but this is

  1173. the bread

  1174. that comes

  1175. from heaven

  1176. so that one

  1177. may eat of it

  1178. and not die

  1179. I am that

  1180. living bread

  1181. that came down

  1182. from heaven

  1183. if anyone

  1184. eats of this bread

  1185. he will live

  1186. forever

  1187. and the bread

  1188. that I will give

  1189. for the life

  1190. of the world

  1191. is my flesh

  1192. my body

  1193. Jesus is

  1194. the bread

  1195. of life

  1196. and in this

  1197. final Passover

  1198. he offers

  1199. himself

  1200. to us

  1201. in the bread

  1202. now put

  1203. yourself

  1204. in the room

  1205. Jesus has

  1206. just lifted

  1207. the platter

  1208. and said

  1209. let anyone

  1210. who is hungry

  1211. come and eat

  1212. let anyone

  1213. who is needy

  1214. come and take

  1215. in the meal

  1216. and then he

  1217. immediately says

  1218. God is the one

  1219. who provides

  1220. the bread

  1221. from the earth

  1222. and then he says

  1223. I am that bread

  1224. so come to me

  1225. if you are hungry

  1226. come to me

  1227. if you are needy

  1228. come to me

  1229. and he transforms

  1230. the entire meaning

  1231. of this glorious

  1232. beautifully

  1233. rich

  1234. redemptive

  1235. meal

  1236. and he invites

  1237. all who are hungry

  1238. to come

  1239. and feast on him

  1240. by faith

  1241. and by feasting

  1242. on him

  1243. in faith

  1244. they in turn

  1245. receive the life

  1246. that cannot be taken

  1247. eternal

  1248. life

  1249. and forgiveness

  1250. and he invites

  1251. us to it

  1252. and just as he

  1253. broke the bread

  1254. in that moment

  1255. so would his body

  1256. be broken

  1257. for our sins

  1258. his death

  1259. brings us

  1260. life

  1261. he

  1262. does this

  1263. so come

  1264. and eat

  1265. he's inviting

  1266. you

  1267. to receive

  1268. this life

  1269. in his name

  1270. believe

  1271. on him

  1272. the bread

  1273. well after this

  1274. they would have

  1275. eaten the meal

  1276. they would have

  1277. enjoyed the fellowship

  1278. together

  1279. communion

  1280. with one another

  1281. in those moments

  1282. another significant

  1283. part of our

  1284. understanding

  1285. of the Lord's

  1286. supper

  1287. as we commune

  1288. with one another

  1289. and it's during

  1290. this moment

  1291. of fellowship

  1292. as they

  1293. eat

  1294. that Jesus

  1295. tells of his

  1296. betrayal

  1297. so we kind

  1298. of take a step

  1299. backwards in the

  1300. text here

  1301. this is the point

  1302. he would have

  1303. said that

  1304. and he goes

  1305. through it

  1306. and this portion

  1307. is closed

  1308. with the third

  1309. cup of wine

  1310. the cup of

  1311. redemption

  1312. I will redeem

  1313. you

  1314. God promised

  1315. and then Jesus

  1316. interjects something

  1317. new into the

  1318. liturgy again

  1319. verse 23

  1320. this time

  1321. and he took

  1322. a cup

  1323. and when he

  1324. had given

  1325. thanks

  1326. he gave it

  1327. to them

  1328. and they all

  1329. drank of it

  1330. and he said

  1331. this is my

  1332. blood

  1333. of the

  1334. covenant

  1335. which is

  1336. poured out

  1337. for many

  1338. this is the

  1339. third cup

  1340. and he

  1341. transforms

  1342. its meaning

  1343. this cup

  1344. of redemption

  1345. is no longer

  1346. about the

  1347. Passover

  1348. and Exodus

  1349. this cup

  1350. of redemption

  1351. is about the

  1352. blood that he

  1353. would spill

  1354. the very next

  1355. afternoon

  1356. on Calvary's

  1357. cross

  1358. as our

  1359. perfect

  1360. lamb

  1361. is sacrificed

  1362. in our

  1363. place

  1364. and he

  1365. says

  1366. this blood

  1367. is the

  1368. sign of

  1369. the new

  1370. covenant

  1371. that God

  1372. had foretold

  1373. in all of

  1374. those prophets

  1375. you can go

  1376. back to

  1377. Jeremiah 31

  1378. you can see

  1379. the promise

  1380. of this

  1381. covenant

  1382. there is

  1383. anticipation

  1384. all through

  1385. the Old

  1386. Testament

  1387. a greater

  1388. king is

  1389. coming

  1390. a greater

  1391. one is

  1392. coming

  1393. he will

  1394. provide

  1395. salvation

  1396. he will

  1397. provide

  1398. redemption

  1399. he will

  1400. provide

  1401. a new

  1402. covenant

  1403. and Jesus

  1404. says

  1405. here it

  1406. is

  1407. and it's

  1408. in my

  1409. blood

  1410. it's

  1411. found

  1412. in my

  1413. sacrifice

  1414. on

  1415. the cross

  1416. see every

  1417. year

  1418. they would

  1419. gather

  1420. and they

  1421. would

  1422. slaughter

  1423. a lamb

  1424. and they

  1425. would

  1426. spread

  1427. the blood

  1428. on the

  1429. doorpost

  1430. at least

  1431. in Exodus

  1432. that's what

  1433. they did

  1434. they spread

  1435. the blood

  1436. on the

  1437. doorpost

  1438. but this

  1439. sacrifice

  1440. was insufficient

  1441. to provide

  1442. true atonement

  1443. so they did

  1444. it every

  1445. year

  1446. over

  1447. and over

  1448. and over

  1449. it's the

  1450. precursor

  1451. to this

  1452. system

  1453. that God

  1454. gave them

  1455. of daily

  1456. sacrifices

  1457. for their

  1458. sin

  1459. and burnt

  1460. offerings

  1461. of praise

  1462. and all

  1463. these things

  1464. they had

  1465. to do

  1466. to try

  1467. to rid

  1468. themselves

  1469. of uncleanness

  1470. but they

  1471. could never

  1472. rid themselves

  1473. of the

  1474. uncleanness

  1475. they just

  1476. had to keep

  1477. coming

  1478. over

  1479. and over

  1480. and over

  1481. again

  1482. all of that

  1483. anticipating

  1484. one day

  1485. God will

  1486. give us

  1487. a true

  1488. atonement

  1489. a final

  1490. atonement

  1491. and here

  1492. it is

  1493. said

  1494. atonement

  1495. once and

  1496. for all

  1497. no more

  1498. sacrifice

  1499. necessary

  1500. he is

  1501. the Passover

  1502. lamb

  1503. his blood

  1504. was sufficient

  1505. to pay for

  1506. our sin

  1507. once and

  1508. for all

  1509. forever

  1510. this was

  1511. the message

  1512. of the

  1513. apostles

  1514. Ephesians

  1515. 1

  1516. Paul says

  1517. in him

  1518. we have

  1519. redemption

  1520. through his

  1521. blood

  1522. the forgiveness

  1523. of our

  1524. trespasses

  1525. according to

  1526. the riches

  1527. of his

  1528. grace

  1529. first Peter

  1530. Peter says

  1531. it

  1532. you were

  1533. ransomed

  1534. from the

  1535. feudal ways

  1536. inherited

  1537. from your

  1538. fathers

  1539. not with

  1540. perishable

  1541. things like

  1542. silver and

  1543. gold

  1544. you can't

  1545. buy your

  1546. salvation

  1547. Peter says

  1548. but instead

  1549. it was with

  1550. the precious

  1551. blood of

  1552. Christ

  1553. that of

  1554. a lamb

  1555. without

  1556. blemish

  1557. or spot

  1558. John the

  1559. apostle says

  1560. the same

  1561. thing

  1562. if we walk

  1563. in the

  1564. light

  1565. as he is

  1566. in the

  1567. light

  1568. we have

  1569. fellowship

  1570. with one

  1571. another

  1572. and the

  1573. blood of

  1574. Jesus

  1575. his son

  1576. cleanses

  1577. us

  1578. from all

  1579. sin

  1580. so come

  1581. and drink

  1582. receive

  1583. the sacrifice

  1584. of his

  1585. blood

  1586. by faith

  1587. for the

  1588. forgiveness

  1589. of your

  1590. sins

  1591. they would

  1592. have

  1593. finished

  1594. with

  1595. psalms

  1596. 116

  1597. to 118

  1598. they would

  1599. have sung

  1600. them as

  1601. hymns

  1602. and then

  1603. comes the

  1604. fourth and

  1605. final cup

  1606. of the

  1607. meal

  1608. and Jesus

  1609. does one

  1610. more

  1611. alteration

  1612. he refuses

  1613. this cup

  1614. verse 25

  1615. truly I say

  1616. to you

  1617. I will not

  1618. drink again

  1619. of the fruit

  1620. of the vine

  1621. until that

  1622. day

  1623. when I

  1624. drink it

  1625. new

  1626. in the

  1627. kingdom

  1628. of God

  1629. William Lane

  1630. says

  1631. Jesus had

  1632. used the

  1633. third cup

  1634. associated

  1635. with the

  1636. promise of

  1637. redemption

  1638. to refer

  1639. to his

  1640. atoning

  1641. death

  1642. on behalf

  1643. of the

  1644. elect

  1645. community

  1646. the cup

  1647. which he

  1648. refused

  1649. was the

  1650. cup of

  1651. consummation

  1652. associated

  1653. with the

  1654. promise

  1655. that God

  1656. will take

  1657. his people

  1658. to be

  1659. with him

  1660. this is

  1661. the cup

  1662. which Jesus

  1663. will drink

  1664. with his

  1665. own

  1666. in the

  1667. messianic

  1668. banquet

  1669. which inaugurates

  1670. the saving

  1671. age

  1672. to come

  1673. this was

  1674. Jesus's

  1675. promise

  1676. that

  1677. fellowship

  1678. with him

  1679. through his

  1680. cross

  1681. will continue

  1682. until the

  1683. day he

  1684. returns

  1685. to take

  1686. us home

  1687. it implies

  1688. both his

  1689. own

  1690. resurrection

  1691. and our

  1692. resurrection

  1693. something

  1694. these disciples

  1695. would have

  1696. looked back

  1697. on with

  1698. tremendous

  1699. confidence

  1700. comfort

  1701. it's also

  1702. why in

  1703. observing

  1704. the Lord's

  1705. supper

  1706. we proclaim

  1707. not only

  1708. that Christ

  1709. has died

  1710. and Christ

  1711. has risen

  1712. but Christ

  1713. will come

  1714. again

  1715. as Paul

  1716. says in

  1717. first

  1718. Corinthians

  1719. 11

  1720. as often

  1721. as you

  1722. eat this

  1723. bread

  1724. and drink

  1725. the cup

  1726. you proclaim

  1727. the Lord's

  1728. death

  1729. until he

  1730. comes

  1731. now we're

  1732. finished

  1733. but track

  1734. with me

  1735. in this

  1736. meal

  1737. what does

  1738. Jesus

  1739. do

  1740. he says

  1741. I'm the

  1742. bread

  1743. come and

  1744. eat

  1745. I'm about

  1746. to spill

  1747. my blood

  1748. for your

  1749. sin

  1750. come and

  1751. drink

  1752. and I'm

  1753. promising you

  1754. that so long

  1755. as you come

  1756. to me in

  1757. faith

  1758. you will

  1759. have

  1760. fellowship

  1761. with me

  1762. until the

  1763. day that I

  1764. finally bring

  1765. you home

  1766. a promise

  1767. of assurance

  1768. I will

  1769. return

  1770. the kingdom

  1771. will be

  1772. ours

  1773. we will

  1774. reign

  1775. forever

  1776. together

  1777. in perfect

  1778. unity

  1779. it's a

  1780. wonderful

  1781. promise

  1782. so what

  1783. do we

  1784. do with

  1785. that

  1786. we

  1787. believe

  1788. we

  1789. believe

  1790. and we

  1791. follow

  1792. Jesus

  1793. used the

  1794. bread and

  1795. wine as

  1796. symbols of

  1797. his gospel

  1798. and receiving

  1799. them as

  1800. symbolic

  1801. of believing

  1802. him as

  1803. savior

  1804. and lord

  1805. and so I

  1806. want to

  1807. extend

  1808. Jesus'

  1809. invitation

  1810. to you

  1811. this morning

  1812. will you

  1813. come and

  1814. eat

  1815. I don't

  1816. mean eat

  1817. the bread

  1818. I specifically

  1819. didn't do the

  1820. Lord's Supper

  1821. today for this

  1822. reason

  1823. to make this

  1824. point

  1825. that unlike

  1826. some people

  1827. have taught

  1828. through the

  1829. years

  1830. it is not

  1831. the eating

  1832. of the bread

  1833. itself

  1834. and the

  1835. drinking

  1836. of the

  1837. wine

  1838. itself

  1839. that brings

  1840. us

  1841. salvation

  1842. it is

  1843. what is

  1844. represented

  1845. in those

  1846. things

  1847. the fact

  1848. that you

  1849. recognize

  1850. Jesus by

  1851. faith

  1852. as the

  1853. son of

  1854. God

  1855. and the

  1856. savior of

  1857. your sin

  1858. and that

  1859. you follow

  1860. him

  1861. as lord

  1862. so come

  1863. and feast

  1864. by faith

  1865. on him

  1866. he'll turn

  1867. no person

  1868. away

  1869. who does

  1870. take
