  1. Have you ever been guilty of the kind of overconfidence that actually blinds you to your own weakness?

  2. I know I have.

  3. You know, it's the kind of self-assurance that will lead you to reject sincere counsel

  4. from someone who can spot your deficiencies, but you're unwilling to acknowledge.

  5. You ever been there?

  6. I have more often probably than I would be willing to admit.

  7. Julie and I have been watching this show.

  8. It's produced by the History Channel.

  9. It's called Alone.

  10. Anybody seen that?

  11. Seen Alone?

  12. Here's basically the premise of the show.

  13. They take 10 survival experts.

  14. They go to a remote area.

  15. I think most recently where we've been watching, they've been in British Columbia up in Canada.

  16. Canada, and they drop these 10 contestants off by themselves in the remotest possible places

  17. with very few supplies.

  18. In fact, they're only allowed to take 10 things with them.

  19. Some of them are guaranteed, and they have to video themselves in the process of doing this thing.

  20. And here's the point.

  21. Go as long as you can.

  22. And the one who stays out there the longest without giving in wins half a million dollars, I think, is the prize.

  23. Now, the most anyone has ever done is 100 days.

  24. The shortest anyone has ever done is just a few hours.

  25. Like within the first day, they've already tapped out.

  26. It's really interesting to watch them do this.

  27. Because inevitably, in every season, there is a handful of contestants, and they all have a tremendous amount of skill.

  28. There is no doubting that.

  29. But there's always a handful of contestants that in the beginning are so confident in themselves

  30. that it's almost as if they don't expect this to really be as hard as it's been for others.

  31. They blind themselves to their own weaknesses.

  32. They convince themselves that the dynamic of being absolutely alone is not going to faze them.

  33. Or that they can handle the big grizzly bears in the wild better than most people.

  34. They're not afraid.

  35. Or whatever it is.

  36. And they have just this air about them, this overconfidence, this pride, that blinds them to their weaknesses.

  37. And inevitably, the people who go into the show like that, they don't make it very long.

  38. They may make it two or three weeks into it.

  39. But ultimately, they fall off.

  40. And they do it embarrassingly, making lots of excuses along the way.

  41. Because the things that they said they would be confident in doing at the very beginning

  42. are actually the things that they were the weakest in, that they failed in, in the process.

  43. So the ones who do the best on the show are not the ones who deny their weaknesses.

  44. They're actually the ones who acknowledge what weaknesses they have.

  45. They see these are the things that I anticipate are going to be a problem for me.

  46. And they acknowledge them.

  47. And then they do their best to persevere despite those weaknesses.

  48. Okay?

  49. There's a little bit of that happening here in this section of verses that we just read.

  50. It exposes a self-assurance in the disciples that quite dramatically sets up their inevitable failure.

  51. And the focus here is on Jesus' announcement that all of them will soon forsake him.

  52. And rather than receive the Lord's words and accept them and pray for strength and for grace in temptation,

  53. instead of doing that, they automatically, overconfidently dismiss the entire idea.

  54. Now, can you imagine?

  55. Jesus, the one whom you have professed at this point, is the Messiah.

  56. He's the one that's going to rule the world.

  57. You've seen what he can do.

  58. You've heard his teaching.

  59. You've seen him foretell things and immediately fulfill them.

  60. You've seen everything that he can do.

  61. Now he comes to you and he says, you're going to fail me.

  62. You're going to fail me.

  63. Can you imagine your first response being, you're wrong?

  64. That's exactly what their response is.

  65. They look at the Lord Jesus and essentially say, no, you're wrong.

  66. How could I ever fail you?

  67. How could I ever forsake you or fall away?

  68. There's a spiritual pride.

  69. Ultimately, it led them to deny the truth of the Bible.

  70. They reject Jesus's words, their Lord.

  71. And then in the process of all of that, they miss a really amazing promise.

  72. And in this way, they are the prototypical followers of Jesus.

  73. There's a lot about them that we can both relate to and that we can learn from.

  74. And what we find happening in the end is that the Son of Man goes as it has been written of him.

  75. And so do his disciples.

  76. And so there's three headings that I think will help guide us along.

  77. These headings are not original to me.

  78. I think they're original to Alistair Begg.

  79. They may not even be original to him, to be honest.

  80. But why improve on something that's adequate, okay?

  81. There's the three headings I'll give you.

  82. A prediction, a promise, and a protest.

  83. A prediction, a promise, and a protest.

  84. Let's look at the prediction in verse 26.

  85. When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

  86. And Jesus said to them, you will all fall away.

  87. So the narrative picks up here after this monumental Passover meal.

  88. Jesus has instituted the Lord's Supper.

  89. It's late at night now.

  90. Remember, the supper would have gone up until midnight, perhaps.

  91. So this is the middle of the night.

  92. Eleven disciples are with Jesus at this moment.

  93. John tells us that Jesus had already dismissed Judas in the middle of the meal.

  94. Well, he has gone to do what it is that he had planned to do.

  95. So it's just Jesus and the eleven remaining disciples now.

  96. In the middle of the night, they're headed to the Mount of Olives.

  97. And it's hard to know exactly when this conversation takes place.

  98. When you lay all four Gospels beside each other and try to examine this particular event,

  99. it's kind of hard to determine whether Jesus has this conversation at the conclusion of the meal in the upper room,

  100. or is he saying these things as they are walking to the Mount of Olives on their way to the Garden of Gethsemane.

  101. But either way, we find Jesus making really another astonishing revelation.

  102. During the meal, he says, one of you will betray me.

  103. Now he's going to say, all of you will forsake me.

  104. But what is it that Jesus actually means?

  105. When he says, all of you are going to fall away, you will all fall away.

  106. What does he mean by that?

  107. And I think there's an important distinction that we need to make here

  108. between Judas' betrayal and the falling away of the other disciples.

  109. And here's really the significance of what Judas did.

  110. Judas' betrayal was a willful act of rebellion against the person and work of Jesus.

  111. Do you understand that?

  112. Judas' betrayal is a willful act of rebellion against who Jesus said he was

  113. and what he claimed to be and what he came to do.

  114. So at some point along the way, Judas has come to the conclusion that Jesus is not the Messiah.

  115. He is not who he says he is.

  116. Therefore, he cannot do what he claims to be able to do.

  117. And he consciously rejects Jesus in unbelief and instead pursues otherworldly things.

  118. And in his particular circumstance, it seems to have been wealth was really his distraction.

  119. And he betrays the Lord for 30 pieces of silver.

  120. That's not the same as what Jesus is now saying these other disciples will do.

  121. In fact, the language that Jesus used in the Greek tense here is actually in a future passive tense.

  122. Suggesting that the falling away would be a fearful lapse in faith rather than an egregious act of rebellion.

  123. So theirs would be a failure in commitment to Christ rather than a willful rejection of Christ.

  124. Do you see the distinction there?

  125. Maybe sometimes we would wonder, well, what really makes Judas any different than the rest of the disciples?

  126. And that's really the distinction.

  127. Judas is saying Jesus is not who he says he is.

  128. He cannot do what he claims to be able to do or what we need for him to do.

  129. Therefore, he betrays Jesus.

  130. That's not what the others are doing.

  131. They're having a fearful lapse of faith in a moment when they are severely tested in faith.

  132. Severely tested in their commitment to the Lord.

  133. James Edwards says this.

  134. I found this so helpful this week.

  135. Jesus warns the disciples to guard against the kind of sinfulness of which most of us are most guilty.

  136. Sins of weakness and irresoluteness rather than sins of intention.

  137. We do not plan on sinning, but neither do we hold the fort when we ought to.

  138. This is an area that we can certainly relate to these disciples, isn't it?

  139. A true disciple of Christ will never reject Jesus and his gospel in the way that Judas did.

  140. A true disciple would never do that.

  141. Neither is it likely that many of our sins will be conscious acts of rebellion against God's moral law.

  142. 1 John chapter 3 makes that clear.

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  143. That those who know Christ do not make a practice of sinning.

  144. That's not to say we never make a conscious act.

  145. It's to say that that's not the characteristic of our life.

  146. Especially as it relates to the person and work of Christ.

  147. Our failures generally are related to a lack of resolute faith in God's plan and commitment to God's purposes.

  148. Jesus.

  149. So think about it in the context of what's going on with these disciples.

  150. Eventually, when Jesus is arrested, the disciples flee.

  151. Not because they doubt who Jesus is.

  152. But because they fear what will happen to them if they remain firmly and unashamedly committed to him.

  153. So when the soldiers, along with Judas and the servants of the high priest,

  154. when they come to get Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  155. and ultimately all of the disciples run away,

  156. they're not doing that because they've suddenly decided Jesus isn't the Messiah,

  157. and Jesus can't forgive my sin, and Jesus isn't going to rule the world.

  158. That's not why they're running.

  159. They're running because in that moment, not a conscious act of rebellion,

  160. but an irresolute lapse in faith.

  161. They're saying, I'm worried for my life.

  162. I'm fearful for my life.

  163. I'm in this moment choosing to save my life rather than to stand by the side of my Savior.

  164. Do you see the difference?

  165. How often are the sins that we commit not necessarily sins of commission,

  166. where we have a moral evil that we willingly choose in rejection of God's law.

  167. That's not typically the sins that we falter in.

  168. Our sins are typically sins of omission,

  169. where God has said, believe me, trust me, follow me, obey me,

  170. and instead of moving forward in faith despite the circumstances around us,

  171. we falter in our faith,

  172. and we choose rather our own path than the path that the Lord has decided,

  173. or instead of trusting the Lord, we rely on other means,

  174. and we neglect prayer, and we neglect other things in our lives.

  175. In the same way as these disciples,

  176. we often fear what will happen to us

  177. if we unashamedly remain committed to Christ.

  178. What will happen to me if I remain unashamedly committed to Christ in my home?

  179. What will I do when my kids really don't like the decisions that I'm making

  180. because they're based on what God wants for us

  181. and not exactly what they want to do or what they want for their life?

  182. Will I remain resolutely steadfast, committed as a disciple of Christ in leading my home?

  183. What will I do in those moments when, in the context of my work,

  184. I am presented with an ethical decision on whether or not I'm going to stand up for what's right

  185. because God said it's right,

  186. or will I falter into the background,

  187. hopefully no one paying much attention to the decision that I make?

  188. What about in relation to our communities?

  189. What about this issue that ultimately will fall to perhaps the hands of the voters

  190. in regards to the right to life for the unborn?

  191. Will we remain resolutely committed to the truth of God?

  192. Will we remain faithful in commitment to Him

  193. even when the cost is steep?

  194. Do you remember what Jesus said was a part of His call to discipleship in chapter 8?

  195. Whoever will save his life will lose it.

  196. But whoever will lose his life for my sake and the gospel will find it.

  197. For what good is it if you gain the whole world, but you lose your soul?

  198. Well, this is consistent teaching.

  199. Now the disciples are actually being faced with a decision.

  200. Really, they're going to have to determine.

  201. They're going to have to show,

  202. am I serious about following Christ?

  203. And they all failed.

  204. Just like there are many times where we all fail as well.

  205. Verse 27,

  206. Jesus says,

  207. Notice that Jesus' statement is not based on His frustration with them.

  208. This is not an assumption on His part that because they had failed before,

  209. they're undoubtedly going to fail again.

  210. He speaks of their failure rather as a fulfilling of Scripture.

  211. As a reality that's based on the truth of God's Word,

  212. not on His expectation that they're just terrible men,

  213. therefore they probably are going to forsake me in this moment.

  214. He names and quotes Zechariah 13, 7.

  215. So He points them directly to the prophecy of the Old Testament that says,

  216. I will strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered.

  217. So Jesus' purpose here is not to reveal their future to them,

  218. but to assert that even their abandonment was a part of God's plan

  219. to provide salvation for sinners.

  220. Do you see that?

  221. You say, why is He even mentioning this to them?

  222. Like how many other times have they failed along the way

  223. and He didn't bother to tell them beforehand?

  224. Why now is Jesus bothering to tell them beforehand

  225. why that they're going to fail?

  226. And the answer to that is to point them back to Him.

  227. He quotes Zechariah and He says,

  228. this is what the Scripture says.

  229. The shepherd's going to be stricken

  230. and then the sheep are going to scatter.

  231. That's you.

  232. He wasn't saying that so that they would just know

  233. what their future is

  234. or so that they could really feel really, really guilty,

  235. even more guilty perhaps because they say that they're not.

  236. That's not why Jesus is saying this.

  237. He's saying this so they will look back to Him and say,

  238. no, He really is Messiah.

  239. He really is the Savior.

  240. He even said what I would do

  241. was the fulfillment of the Scripture.

  242. This wasn't about them.

  243. This was about Him.

  244. Was God pleased by their falling away?

  245. Of course not.

  246. Was God pleased to use it

  247. to display His love and grace through Jesus?

  248. Yes, absolutely He was.

  249. And He was so pleased to use it

  250. that He proclaimed through Zechariah

  251. hundreds of years before

  252. that it's exactly what would happen.

  253. But they push against the Scripture here.

  254. I don't think they do it,

  255. but they're not recognizing that's what they're doing,

  256. but that's what they do.

  257. And they say, no, we would never do that.

  258. You know, there's another dynamic of this

  259. in the Scripture that speaks to us.

  260. Zechariah wasn't writing about you and me.

  261. He was writing about those 11 disciples.

  262. That's what Jesus said.

  263. But do you know that the Bible also says

  264. that each of us have sin,

  265. and each of us will continue in sin,

  266. not in the bondage of it in regards to judgment,

  267. but we will struggle with the presence of sin in our lives

  268. until the day that we reach heaven,

  269. and all sin is then banished,

  270. and we are made new in the resurrection.

  271. The Scripture says that.

  272. Why does it tell us that?

  273. Is it just to remind us over and over how bad we are?

  274. No.

  275. It's to remind us over and over how good He is,

  276. that He is the only one

  277. that could perfectly fulfill this law.

  278. He is the only one that we could possibly look to for salvation.

  279. He is the only one that we could possibly go to for forgiveness,

  280. and He provides it to us in abundance.

  281. This wasn't about them.

  282. This was about Jesus.

  283. It's another reminder.

  284. All of the Bible,

  285. all of history,

  286. tells the story of God's redemption of His people,

  287. namely through the crucifixion

  288. and resurrection of His perfect Son,

  289. Jesus.

  290. Notice who's striking the shepherd.

  291. God is.

  292. I will strike the shepherd,

  293. God says.

  294. It was always His plan to do this.

  295. Is that not Jesus' purpose

  296. in drawing their minds to it again?

  297. It wasn't about them.

  298. It's about Him.

  299. Isaiah 53

  300. was the will of the Lord to crush Him.

  301. He has put Him to grief.

  302. If you're doing your Romans readings

  303. ahead of Lakeside Connect next week,

  304. you will have read Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  305. when Paul says,

  306. what shall we say to these things?

  307. If God is for us,

  308. who can be against us?

  309. He who did not spare His own Son,

  310. but gave Him up for us all.

  311. It was His plan.

  312. That's the point.

  313. It was the plan of God for Jesus to die for our sins.

  314. It always was.

  315. And as a part of that process,

  316. His disciples would fearfully,

  317. but temporarily,

  318. scatter.

  319. His revelation to them

  320. was meant to show them once again

  321. the reality of who He was

  322. and what He had come to do.

  323. Well, that's the prediction.

  324. Let's look next at the promise.

  325. Would you look with me at verse 28?

  326. After I am raised up,

  327. I will go before you to Galilee.

  328. Of all of these verses,

  329. this is the most significant one.

  330. After I am raised up,

  331. I will go before you to Galilee.

  332. This is the most significant statement

  333. that Jesus makes here,

  334. and it's the statement

  335. that they all missed.

  336. Every one of them missed it.

  337. So intent on defending themselves.

  338. They've made a statement about them

  339. rather than about Him.

  340. And so intent on defending themselves,

  341. they didn't comprehend the magnitude of this.

  342. And it's this dynamic of the disciples

  343. that makes this verse almost invisible

  344. even to us as the readers.

  345. Here's what I mean.

  346. When I read through this section of verses

  347. a while ago,

  348. how many of you were impacted

  349. by the significance of verse 28?

  350. I will rise again,

  351. and I will go before you to Galilee.

  352. If you're like me,

  353. you didn't even notice it.

  354. Because on one hand,

  355. you've got this unbelievable revelation

  356. that all of His closest disciples

  357. are gonna forsake Him.

  358. And we sit back and we think,

  359. how could they even do that?

  360. After everything that they've said and seen,

  361. after everything they've heard,

  362. how could they possibly leave Him?

  363. And we forget that we do the same thing.

  364. We do the same thing.

  365. But we look at this,

  366. and we see the drama of it,

  367. and we think, wow.

  368. And then we see how Peter

  369. is so emphatically going against Jesus again

  370. in this moment.

  371. And we get so distracted by these other things

  372. that even we miss

  373. this short little statement in verse 28

  374. that brings us all the hope in the world.

  375. And they completely missed it.

  376. It's another way that we can relate to these men.

  377. Have you ever been so overwhelmed

  378. by the reality of your circumstance

  379. that you failed to recognize

  380. the promises of God

  381. meant to get you through that circumstance?

  382. Isn't that one of our massive failures?

  383. It's not always that we doubt God.

  384. It's that we don't listen to Him

  385. when He gives us reasons not to doubt.

  386. When He gives us hope

  387. and promises and assurance,

  388. and we just let it go by unnoticed.

  389. It's no wonder that so many of us

  390. can tend to wallow in defeat and discouragement.

  391. If we would but take our eyes off of our circumstance

  392. and fix them on Jesus and His promises,

  393. we would undoubtedly live with joy

  394. amid the heartaches and the failures.

  395. And look at the promise itself.

  396. It's twofold.

  397. First, He promises He would rise from the dead.

  398. Now, this has been their problem up to this point, hasn't it?

  399. Every time Jesus mentions His suffering

  400. and His death to the disciples in Mark's gospel,

  401. every time,

  402. He also mentions His resurrection,

  403. and every time,

  404. they completely miss it.

  405. Do you know why?

  406. Because they're so focused on what they didn't like

  407. about Jesus' death

  408. that they totally missed the promise of His life,

  409. of His resurrection.

  410. Is that not exactly how we live?

  411. So caught up in the circumstances

  412. that God brings us in,

  413. so frustrated that He would allow us to deal with this,

  414. or so frustrated that things aren't going the way

  415. that we want them to go.

  416. That's where the disciples were with Jesus on that.

  417. They didn't want Jesus to have to do that.

  418. They wanted to skip that part.

  419. They just wanted to get to the new heavens

  420. and the new earth.

  421. And how often do we go through life?

  422. This is not how I planned.

  423. This is not what I wanted.

  424. I don't know why God is doing this.

  425. And in the process of that,

  426. we completely miss the promises that He gives

  427. to carry us through those moments

  428. in His goodness and in His grace.

  429. And here He's telling them,

  430. yes, I'm going to die,

  431. but I'm going to raise.

  432. I'm going to raise.

  433. I'm going to come back to life.

  434. I'm not going to stay dead.

  435. And they totally miss it.

  436. The second part,

  437. first part's resurrection.

  438. Second part is restoration.

  439. Restoration.

  440. That's just so helpful.

  441. Not only would Jesus rise from the dead,

  442. but He would fellowship with them

  443. in spite of their failure.

  444. Do you see the significance in this promise?

  445. He never tells Judas,

  446. go do what you're going to do quickly.

  447. And when it's finished,

  448. I'm going to meet you in Jerusalem

  449. and we're going to work it out.

  450. He never says that to Judas

  451. because Judas' failure was different than these men.

  452. But what is it that He tells them?

  453. You're all going to fall away.

  454. Every one of you are going to fail me.

  455. But I'm going to rise up

  456. and I'm going to meet you.

  457. Go to Galilee.

  458. I'm going to be there.

  459. We're going to fellowship again.

  460. We're going to be together again.

  461. This is a promise of restoration.

  462. Now can you imagine

  463. had these men just listened to the promise?

  464. They could have in that moment recognized,

  465. yes, I do have weakness.

  466. Yes, I probably will fail Him.

  467. He said it is so.

  468. But He's going to meet me after.

  469. And He's going to be with me after.

  470. And He's going to forgive me after.

  471. Now listen,

  472. how many times will you go through your Christian life

  473. and fail the Lord in the same way that these men did?

  474. Sometimes in ways that no one will see.

  475. Maybe internal ways in your own mind

  476. and in your own heart.

  477. Maybe sometimes in dramatic ways that everybody sees

  478. and it's just utterly embarrassing

  479. or whatever it may be.

  480. If you belong to Christ,

  481. He will always meet you.

  482. He will always meet you.

  483. He will always forgive you.

  484. He will always restore you.

  485. Do you realize

  486. that's the gospel as it moves on from our conversion?

  487. That the same Jesus that enters into our brokenness to save us

  488. remains with us in that brokenness

  489. to sanctify us

  490. and to continue in that forgiveness

  491. and to continue in that grace

  492. and in that love.

  493. If they would have only listened.

  494. Are you hearing Jesus here?

  495. He will meet you.

  496. He will restore you.

  497. The disciples never did grasp this.

  498. Not until after Jesus rose from the dead.

  499. But would you flip over just a,

  500. maybe it's just a page in your Bible to chapter 16.

  501. Just a spoiler alert here.

  502. Jesus does rise from the dead.

  503. And I want you to see what happens at the tomb.

  504. Verse number six.

  505. This is the angel that has appeared to

  506. Mary and the other women at the tomb.

  507. And he said to them,

  508. Do not be alarmed.

  509. You seek Jesus of Nazareth,

  510. who was crucified.

  511. He has risen.

  512. He's not here.

  513. See the place where they laid him.

  514. And then look what the angel says.

  515. But go tell his disciples and Peter.

  516. I think that's significant.

  517. Peter speaks up in a dramatic way here.

  518. The angel speaks up to Peter

  519. in a dramatic way at the tomb.

  520. Go and tell the disciples and Peter

  521. that he is going before you to Galilee.

  522. And look at the last phrase.

  523. You'll see him just as he told you.

  524. This was Jesus' promise.

  525. And on the moment,

  526. the morning of his resurrection,

  527. he fulfills the promise.

  528. He did rise from the dead.

  529. And then he sends words to the disciples.

  530. Go to Galilee.

  531. I'm going to see you there.

  532. And we're going to talk about this there.

  533. And we're going to get through it together there.

  534. Do you see what Jesus is doing now?

  535. Back in chapter 14.

  536. He wasn't mad at them.

  537. He's not picking up a fight with them.

  538. His words here,

  539. even his words of revelation of their failure,

  540. are there to assure them.

  541. It's to show them that his abandonment

  542. was necessary to fulfill the scripture.

  543. And knowing their inevitable distress

  544. because of that,

  545. here's these amazing promises

  546. of resurrection and restoration.

  547. Let me say one more thing

  548. and we're going to move on.

  549. Jesus is not a brow-beating,

  550. iron-fisted Lord.

  551. He is a compassionate,

  552. caring,

  553. sympathetic,

  554. assuring Lord.

  555. Matthew 11.

  556. Come to me, he says.

  557. All who labor and are heavy laden,

  558. I will give you rest.

  559. Take my yoke.

  560. Learn from me.

  561. I'm gentle and lowly in heart.

  562. And you will find rest for your souls.

  563. For my yoke is easy

  564. and my burden is light.

  565. Jesus isn't giving them a hard time.

  566. He's giving them hope.

  567. He's assuring them.

  568. But they missed it.

  569. Don't miss it.

  570. Don't miss it.

  571. Don't miss it.

  572. Thirdly and finally,

  573. we see a protest.

  574. Verse 29,

  575. Peter said to him,

  576. even though they all fall away,

  577. I will not.

  578. It's not a surprise to us

  579. that Peter is the one to speak up, is it?

  580. He's always the one to speak up.

  581. But in case we're tempted

  582. to come down so hard on him,

  583. let's acknowledge why he's saying this.

  584. He's saying this first

  585. because he loves Jesus.

  586. And he's committed to Jesus.

  587. He's not trying to mask something here.

  588. This is coming from a place

  589. where he doesn't want to think about

  590. betraying the Lord

  591. or falling away from the Lord.

  592. He wants to remain committed to the Lord.

  593. That's where this is sourced first.

  594. And remember,

  595. Jesus had just told them

  596. that someone among them

  597. was going to betray him.

  598. And Peter,

  599. the loyalist,

  600. is surely disgusted by that notion.

  601. He's probably

  602. hypersensitive

  603. to any kind of thought of betrayal

  604. or forsaking

  605. that any of them would have.

  606. His earnest desire,

  607. truly believe,

  608. his earnest desire

  609. is to love

  610. and to be faithful to

  611. and to please Jesus.

  612. But Peter was also foolishly arrogant here

  613. because he rebukes Jesus

  614. again.

  615. He did it in chapter 8 too.

  616. He rebukes Jesus.

  617. And then he takes it

  618. even further than that.

  619. And he diminishes

  620. the love that others had

  621. for Jesus.

  622. Do you see that?

  623. In his words,

  624. there is a hint of expectation

  625. that the other 10

  626. might indeed forsake the Lord.

  627. But an act for him

  628. would just be impossible

  629. to think of.

  630. He's too committed

  631. to the Lord.

  632. Jesus,

  633. though they all do that,

  634. I would never

  635. do that.

  636. boy,

  637. it sounds a lot like us,

  638. doesn't it?

  639. You know,

  640. for a group of people

  641. that follow a Lord

  642. who is so forgiving

  643. and gracious

  644. and merciful

  645. and kind,

  646. we can be a group,

  647. speaking as Christians

  648. as a whole,

  649. we can be a group

  650. that is just

  651. unbelievably judgmental.

  652. And we look to others

  653. and assume their sin.

  654. Or we would highlight

  655. their sin.

  656. I would never

  657. go that far.

  658. I would never

  659. do that thing.

  660. I would never

  661. fall in that way.

  662. And we would

  663. castigate others

  664. while trying to

  665. pump ourselves up

  666. before others.

  667. Don't we do that?

  668. Is that what Peter

  669. is doing here?

  670. Lord,

  671. they'll all do it.

  672. I won't do it.

  673. Which,

  674. by the way,

  675. this is an attitude

  676. that Peter,

  677. that Jesus corrected

  678. in Peter later.

  679. Do you remember

  680. the story in John 21?

  681. This is while

  682. they finally get

  683. to Galilee.

  684. Jesus has risen.

  685. They are fishing

  686. and they fish all night

  687. and they catch nothing

  688. and Jesus is on the shore.

  689. They don't realize

  690. that it's him,

  691. but he's on the shore

  692. and he says,

  693. have you tried

  694. the other side

  695. of the boat?

  696. I was fishing

  697. a couple weeks ago

  698. when we were on vacation

  699. on Emerald Isle.

  700. We were doing

  701. red drum fishing

  702. and that morning

  703. was just super slow

  704. and Andy and I

  705. were texting

  706. and he had asked me

  707. if we caught anything.

  708. We hadn't caught anything.

  709. He said,

  710. you tried the other

  711. side of the boat.

  712. You know,

  713. we could have done that

  714. and it wouldn't have

  715. made a difference.

  716. So can you imagine

  717. they're on the boat.

  718. They've been out there

  719. all night.

  720. They're tired

  721. and Jesus says,

  722. they don't know

  723. it's Jesus,

  724. but he says,

  725. throw it on the other

  726. side of the boat

  727. and they throw it

  728. on the other side

  729. of the boat

  730. and they bring in

  731. the catch of their lives

  732. and they bring it in

  733. and there's Jesus

  734. and he's already got

  735. breakfast ready for them

  736. and you remember

  737. how it goes.

  738. There's the pile of fish

  739. on the beach

  740. or perhaps in the boat

  741. wherever it was

  742. and then the disciples

  743. are there quietly.

  744. They're all ashamed

  745. over what they've done.

  746. Every one of them are.

  747. They don't know

  748. how to react.

  749. They don't know

  750. how to respond to Jesus

  751. and here's Jesus.

  752. He's cooking for them

  753. and he's showing

  754. such love to them

  755. and remember what he asked Peter.

  756. Peter or Simon,

  757. son of Jonah,

  758. do you love me

  759. more than these?

  760. Now I've heard people say

  761. that this had to have

  762. been a notion

  763. towards the fish

  764. that he had just caught

  765. as if Peter had quit

  766. on Jesus altogether

  767. and had gone back

  768. to a former life

  769. and maybe there's

  770. some truth in that

  771. but I don't think

  772. Jesus is looking over

  773. at the fish

  774. and saying,

  775. Peter,

  776. do you love me

  777. more than you love fishing?

  778. He already knows

  779. that Peter has demonstrated

  780. that plenty of times before.

  781. No,

  782. here's what,

  783. he's referring back

  784. to Peter's statement here.

  785. He's looking at the rest

  786. of the disciples

  787. and he's saying,

  788. Peter,

  789. do you really love me

  790. more than them?

  791. Because that's what you said.

  792. Do you love me

  793. more than them?

  794. Do you see the arrogance

  795. that Jesus corrects

  796. firmly,

  797. lovingly?

  798. He corrects it

  799. in Peter there.

  800. We're guilty

  801. of that same arrogance.

  802. Look at verse 30.

  803. How is it that Jesus responds?

  804. Jesus said,

  805. truly I tell you,

  806. Peter,

  807. this very night

  808. before the rooster crows twice,

  809. you will deny me

  810. three times.

  811. In other words,

  812. Peter,

  813. it's not that you're

  814. going to fall away,

  815. you're going to outright

  816. deny me

  817. on three different occasions.

  818. Tonight,

  819. everybody else

  820. is just going to run away.

  821. You're actually going

  822. to tell people

  823. you don't know me.

  824. You're going to invoke

  825. a curse on yourself

  826. in the process

  827. of doing that to others.

  828. That's how far

  829. you're going to go,

  830. Peter.

  831. Peter,

  832. look at verse 31.

  833. But he said emphatically,

  834. if I must die

  835. with you,

  836. I will not deny you.

  837. And they all said

  838. the same.

  839. Declares his loyalty

  840. to Jesus

  841. even to death.

  842. And it's not that

  843. Peter didn't mean it.

  844. I think he did.

  845. He truly believed

  846. he was willing

  847. to follow Christ

  848. to the point of death.

  849. The problem

  850. wasn't in his passion.

  851. The problem

  852. was in his pride.

  853. He knew better

  854. than to doubt

  855. Jesus' words.

  856. But in his pride,

  857. he sinned greatly

  858. against the Lord.

  859. And don't miss the fact

  860. that the rest of them

  861. affirmed it.

  862. Yeah, Jesus,

  863. we agree with Peter.

  864. We would never do that.

  865. We will follow you

  866. to the death.

  867. And within a couple of hours,

  868. every single one of them

  869. have fallen away.

  870. The truth is

  871. that each one of us

  872. is capable

  873. of committing

  874. the most egregious sins.

  875. we have to avoid

  876. the pride

  877. that fools us

  878. into thinking

  879. we are safer

  880. than others.

  881. Because we're really not.

  882. Remember what Solomon

  883. said in Proverbs 16?

  884. Pride goes before

  885. destruction

  886. and a haughty spirit

  887. before a fall.

  888. Remember Paul's words

  889. in 1 Corinthians 10,

  890. 12.

  891. This was in the context

  892. of discipline

  893. and restoring

  894. other believers

  895. in the process

  896. of their sin.

  897. He says,

  898. therefore let anyone

  899. who thinks that he stands

  900. take heed

  901. lest he fall.

  902. In other words,

  903. you're just as capable

  904. of the same sins

  905. as Israel was

  906. in the Old Testament,

  907. Paul says.

  908. And you're just as capable

  909. of committing the sins

  910. that others in the church

  911. have committed as well.

  912. Don't think too much

  913. of yourself.

  914. you'll surely fall.

  915. But it brings up

  916. an important question.

  917. What should Peter

  918. have done?

  919. Should he have just

  920. listened to the Lord

  921. and then just

  922. allowed himself

  923. carelessly to sin?

  924. Well, that doesn't seem

  925. like it would be right.

  926. Of course not.

  927. It's neither right

  928. to deny our capacity

  929. to sin

  930. nor is it right

  931. to give ourselves

  932. over to it.

  933. I don't want to get

  934. too far ahead.

  935. We're going to get there

  936. next week.

  937. But Jesus actually

  938. answers this

  939. in the very next section.

  940. Look at verse 38.

  941. Watch and pray

  942. that you may not

  943. enter into temptation.

  944. The spirit indeed

  945. is willing

  946. but the flesh

  947. is weak.

  948. Do you know

  949. what's going on

  950. with Peter?

  951. He has a willing spirit

  952. but he's not

  953. recognizing the weakness

  954. of his flesh.

  955. You know what our only

  956. course of action is?

  957. Our only course of action

  958. is to acknowledge

  959. the reality

  960. of our sinfulness

  961. and continue in prayer

  962. for God's grace

  963. and God's strength

  964. to avoid sin

  965. and his mercy

  966. when we don't

  967. avoid sin.

  968. That's our only

  969. course of action.

  970. The word tells us

  971. we will sin.

  972. So stay faithful

  973. to prayer.

  974. Engage in prayer

  975. for God's help

  976. for God's grace

  977. and then for God's

  978. mercy.

  979. Because we all know

  980. that we will sin

  981. though we don't know

  982. the when and how

  983. but we can't give

  984. into it.

  985. Now I'll close this way.

  986. Sinclair Ferguson said

  987. the marvel of all of this

  988. is that Jesus

  989. did not love Peter

  990. any less.

  991. He didn't love Peter

  992. any less.

  993. Isn't that amazing?

  994. Because if somebody

  995. does me the way

  996. that Peter does Jesus

  997. I'm not going to

  998. love them at all.

  999. And here's Jesus

  1000. the perfect one

  1001. who is forsaken

  1002. by the one

  1003. who claims that he

1004. would go all the way

1005. to the cross with him

  1006. and then not only

  1007. does he not

  1008. does he continue

  1009. to love him

  1010. but he loves him

  1011. just the same.

  1012. He loves him

  1013. just the same.

1014. He's so full of love.

  1015. He's so abundant

  1016. in patience.

  1017. He won't tolerate

  1018. our sin

  1019. but neither will he

  1020. refuse to forgive us

1021. when we seek his mercy.

  1022. Remember 1 John 2.

  1023. My little children

  1024. John writes

  1025. I am writing

  1026. these things to you

1027. so that you will not sin

  1028. but if anyone

  1029. does sin

  1030. we have an advocate

  1031. with the Father

  1032. Jesus Christ

  1033. the righteous.

  1034. He's the propitiation

  1035. for our sins

1036. and not for ours only

  1037. but the sins

  1038. of the whole world

  1039. and by this

  1040. we know that

  1041. we have come

  1042. to know him

  1043. if we keep

  1044. his commandments.

  1045. In other words

  1046. strive to do right

  1047. realize you're

  1048. going to mess up

1049. but strive to do right

1050. and when you do sin

  1051. remember Jesus

  1052. is a loving

  1053. forgiving Savior.

  1054. You do not fall

1055. out of love with him.

  1056. He continues

  1057. to love you

1058. and he will meet you.

  1059. He will meet you

  1060. in Galilee.

  1061. It reminds me

  1062. of that song

  1063. we sing so often

  1064. he'll not let

  1065. my soul be lost

  1066. his promises

  1067. shall last

  1068. bought by him

  1069. at such a cost

  1070. he will hold

  1071. me fast.

1072. So what do we do

  1073. with this?

  1074. Well perhaps

  1075. perhaps what you need

  1076. to do this morning

  1077. is just solidify

  1078. your resolve.

  1079. Remain

  1080. steadfastly faithful

  1081. and committed

  1082. to the Lord

  1083. and his ways.

  1084. Maybe you need

  1085. to get your eyes

  1086. adjusted.

  1087. Adjusted in the sense

  1088. where I'm not going

  1089. to make every circumstance

  1090. in life about me.

  1091. I'm not just going

  1092. to focus on

  1093. what's happening

  1094. to me.

  1095. I'm going to fix

  1096. my eyes on Jesus

  1097. and his promises.

1098. I'm not going to deny

  1099. the reality of hardship

1100. but I'm going to let

  1101. Jesus carry me

  1102. through the hardship.

  1103. Look to his promises.

  1104. Maybe you have

  1105. some pride

  1106. like me

  1107. that you need

  1108. to abandon.

  1109. Not think so much

  1110. of yourself

  1111. and be vigilant.

  1112. Sober

  1113. for your adversary

  1114. the devil

  1115. walks about

  1116. like a roaring lion

  1117. seeking whom

  1118. he may devour.

  1119. Do you know

  1120. who wrote that?

  1121. Peter.

  1122. You know why

  1123. Peter wrote that?

  1124. Because Jesus

  1125. told him

  1126. in the context

  1127. of this conversation

  1128. Luke tells us this

  1129. Satan has demanded

  1130. to sift you

  1131. as wheat Peter

1132. but I prayed for you

  1133. and after you

  1134. are returned

  1135. I want you to

  1136. strengthen all

  1137. the other men.

  1138. Peter missed it.

  1139. He didn't listen

  1140. to Jesus' words

  1141. and he failed.

  1142. But what Jesus

  1143. said was true.

1144. He did pray for him

1145. as he prays for us.

  1146. He forgave him.

  1147. Peter was used

  1148. tremendously

  1149. in the lives

  1150. of those other men.

  1151. And later on

  1152. in his life

  1153. he pens a letter

  1154. to other Christians

  1155. who are struggling

  1156. and he says

  1157. be sober.

  1158. Be vigilant.

  1159. The devil

  1160. is after you.

  1161. So stay faithful.

  1162. Don't think too much

  1163. of yourself.

  1164. That's what I did.

  1165. Can you imagine

  1166. Mark

  1167. taking this gospel

  1168. to the people

  1169. in Rome

  1170. who had requested

  1171. for it apparently.

  1172. He was a companion

  1173. of Peter

  1174. and he's writing

  1175. for the most part

  1176. Peter's account

1177. of all of these things

  1178. and then

  1179. maybe as he hands

  1180. this over

  1181. maybe perhaps

  1182. as he reads it

  1183. to the church

  1184. in Rome

  1185. or wherever he may

  1186. have been

  1187. at that particular

  1188. moment

  1189. when he gets

  1190. to a passage

  1191. like this

  1192. he remembers

  1193. the fact

  1194. that it was

  1195. also John Mark

  1196. who in the midst

  1197. of ministry

  1198. got scared.

  1199. He didn't have

  1200. the resolute

  1201. faithfulness

  1202. that he should have

  1203. had

  1204. and he leaves

  1205. Paul and Barnabas

  1206. and he goes

  1207. back home

  1208. to mom

  1209. but then Peter

  1210. comes to Mark

  1211. and he takes him

  1212. as a mentor

  1213. and then it's Mark

  1214. who God uses

  1215. to produce this gospel

  1216. for us today.

1217. Do you see the reminders

  1218. of all of this?

  1219. We all fail.

  1220. We're going to fail

  1221. but Jesus is loving

  1222. and he's faithful

  1223. and he's forgiving

  1224. and he's kind.

  1225. He's kind.
